MOO-VING DISPLAY: River Chatfield, 4, showcases this year’s edition of the Chatfield family’s annual Christmas hay bale display at Pomonal. River’s uncle Tim Chatfield said he was pleased to play a role in continuing a family tradition started by his daughters, Heidi and Chelsea Chatfield, a decade ago. “It’s something we’ve been doing for the past 10 years, to bring a bit of festive spirit coming into Christmas time,” he said. “Each year we come up with a different theme and this is one of the many displays that we’ve done.” Mr Chatfield said the display, which this year features a cow pulling a broken-down John Deere tractor, was a drawcard for tourists in the area. “When people drive out here to Lake Fyans or the Grampians they stop and make comments, and a lot of photos get taken. It’s good,” he said. “As you can see, there’s a fair bit of work involved. But we feel very lucky, because we got the hay from the farm from this year’s harvest and it’s put a smile on the children’s faces.” Picture: PAUL CARRACHER
‘You’ll fall in love’ BY SARAH MATTHEWS
A
cclaimed Australian actor Eric Bana believes people need to spend some time in the Wimmera-southern Mallee – rather than just passing through – to fully appreciate the beauty of its landscape and its people.
Bana was familiar with the region’s layout thanks to motorcycle trips throughout the years, but it was not until he temporarily relocated to Warracknabeal to film The Dry in early 2019 that it truly got under his skin. “There were some towns that I
hadn’t been to, which I really enjoyed seeing for the first time,” he told The Weekly Advertiser. “I love the landscape and the silo artwork was beautiful. “One of the things we enjoyed most about staying out there – instead of just driving through – was experiencing all the beautiful sunrises and sunsets in that landscape. “I think if you were driving through there on a 43-degree day and everything’s brown… it’s maybe not as appealing. “But when you stay there and see all
that it has to offer, that’s when you fall in love with the place. “It really got under our skin and we’ve been talking about it ever since.” Bana and director Robert Connolly will return to the region tomorrow for special screenings of the film at Horsham Centre Cinema, weeks before it opens nationally on January 1. The pair also helped produce the movie and played a key role in determining filming locations. At the heart of The Dry – an adaptation of Jane Harper’s award-winning
crime novel of the same name – was finding the perfect location for Kiewarra, the fictional drought-stricken hometown of Federal Agent Aaron Falk, played by Bana. Falk returns home after an absence of more than 20 years to attend the funeral of his childhood friend, who allegedly murdered his wife and child before taking his own life. Falk opens up an old wound – the decades-old, unsolved death of a teenage girl. Connolly, whose previous credits include award-winning films Balibo
and Paper Planes, said the Wimmerasouthern Mallee provided the perfect setting for Kiewarra, and was ‘exactly how Jane Harper describes it in the book’. “We did a roadtrip out there very early on, when we became involved, right through the area we filmed in,” he said. “It’s quite an extraordinary landscape.” Bana added the area’s remoteness was what made it so special, and was an important aspect of the film.
