2013 Stawell Gift winner Andrew Robinson raises the winner’s trophy with coach Ray Quarrell by his side at Central Park on Monday. The 20-year-old Launceston student dedicated the win to Quarrell, who lost his home to the January bushfires in Tasmania. Robinson became the first athlete from the Apple Isle to win at Stawell in more than 70 years. He took advantage of a one-metre starter’s penalty to 2011 winner and pre-race favourite Mitch Williams-Swain to take the $40,000 final by just two one-hundredths of a second. The thrilling finale overshadowed the disappointment of event drawcard Asafa Powell withdrawing with a hamstring injury on Monday morning. The Jamaican sprint sensation told race broadcaster Channel Ten he will ‘definitely’ be back for another attempt at winning the Stawell Gift. Picture: WILLAMY IMAGES

ural Northwest Health has begun preparations to celebrate 70 years of public hospital services to the Hopetoun community this year.

A weekend of celebrations to mark the milestone have been set for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June. The celebrations will commence with a dinner at Hopetoun Hall on June 8 and conclude the following day with a barbeque at the Hopetoun campus.

• Over 25 years experience in computers • Locally owned and operated franchise

The Town Hall will be adorned with hospital memorabilia and there will be several guest speakers. Popular GP Dr Peter Carter will return as a guest of RNH to officially open the festivities. RNH CEO Catherine Morley is chairing an organising committee formed after a community meeting to discuss ideas for the anniversary celebrations. Ms Morley said she expected up to 300 people to attend the reunion. We have a very enthusiastic committee putting celebrations together and there’s going to be plenty happening to make it a memorable weekend, Ms Morley said. “There’s also a sub-committee formed to organise memorabilia, she said. “And the fact that Dr Carter is travelling back makes the occasion that little more special.

• Backed by the largest retailer of computer and electrical goods in Australia • Huge range of products IN STOCK for immediate purchase • Flexible payment options *2 cash, credit, finance and rental*2 • We use only certified repairers for warranty work

The Hopetoun and District Bush Nursing Hospital was opened in 1943 by Sir George Goudie, after the Hopetoun and District Bush Nursing Centre purchased the Newhaven Private Hospital from Sister Cumming, who started Hopetoun’s first infirmary in 1921. The hospital merged with Warracknabeal and Beulah hospitals in 1998 to form

Rural Northwest Health. Ms Morley said the 70th birthday was an important milestone for the Hopetoun community. “70 years of hospital service for any community is a great achievement and should be recognised with a commemorative event that is worthy of the occasion, she said.

Stawell hospital welcomes first baby Stawell Regional Health is celebrating the birth of the first baby under its new maternity model of care at Stawell Hospital. William James was born on March 25 at 4.08pm with the guidance of midwives Tom Bown and Colleen Chu. The first child for Jacqui and Charles Calvert of Landsborough, William weighed 3.41kilograms.

Midwife Tom Bown said for the main part of her pregnancy, Mrs Calvert had been under the care of the midwifery team at SRH, which subsequently delivered the baby. “It was an exciting day for the family and the hospital, Mr Bown said. “I feel Jackie and Charles got everything they wanted from the birth and that we fulfilled their needs. As part of the new maternity model of care, known as the

‘Grampians Maternity Group Practice’, low-risk expectant mothers are cared for, and the baby delivered by SRH midwives. Obstetric check-ups are also provided via telemedicine link-up with obstetricians from Western Health. SRH Acting Chief Executive Officer Tony Roberts said the organisation was thrilled that the first baby in some time had been delivered in Stawell.

very fortunate to have such an experienced partnership in Tom and Colleen, who have collectively delivered around 9000 babies in their careers so far, Mr Roberts said. “We have more expectant mothers seeing our midwives to receive antenatal care, and we look forward to growing this innovative model of care in partnership with Western Health.

Daylight saving ends this weekend The summer daylight saving period ends this weekend. Move clocks backward one hour at 3am on Sunday, or before you go to bed on Saturday night. The Country Fire Authority is urging householders to also change their smoke alarm batteries.

Mr Forrest announced his retirement plans at the Wimmera Machinery Field Days last month.

The seat, made vacant by the impending retirement of long-standing member John Forrest, is one of the safest in Federal politics, with The Nationals winning more than 74 percent of two-party votes at the 2010 election.

He cited health and family as major reasons for his change of heart, saying the role had been ‘one of the greatest honours’ of his life.

The Nationals state director Stuart Copeland said the five nominees had been assessed by the party’s Candidate Approval Committee.

“My ongoing commitment to the interests of rural Australia will continue but perhaps in a different supportive role,” he said.

He said the move was to ensure the nominess complied with all of the rules and qualifications of the party’s constitution and were eligible to proceed to the preselection.

YOUR SAY Relay thanks SIR,- On behalf of Cancer Council Victoria, I congratulate and thank those who helped make the Horsham Relay For Life a successful event. In March, more than 1000 local residents came together to participate in the overnight relay-style event celebrating cancer survivors, remembering loved ones lost, and encouraging the community to fight back against cancer. Relay For Life is a global event strongly embraced by

communities all over Victoria. The event challenges teams to take turns to keep a baton moving all night in a relay-style walk or run. I am constantly inspired by Relay For Life participants and volunteers, and their dedication to the cause.

Bookings and further information is available from the Horsham library on 5382 5707. A free detailed booklet, outlining the many state-wide activities celebrating the 2013 Heritage Festival, is available at outlets including the Horsham Information Centre and the Horsham library.

Although the statistics are confronting – one in two people will be diagnosed by age 85, there is reason to celebrate.

This year, Horsham participants are expecting to raise $150,000 which will support Cancer Council Victoria’s research and prevention programs, as well as support services for local residents specifically, the Cancer Council Helpline.

Finally, I would like to personally thank each of the volunteer committee members, led by chairmanager Kingsley Dalgleish, for volunteering their time and energy to ensure the event’s success. “Recently Rob and Debbie Norton also joined as private gold members,” Mr Johns said. “The Foundation now has a total of 15 platinum members and 53 gold members which is a huge feat for the organisation and also a sign of how generous the Wimmera community is.” The Foundation500 Initiative was established to raise funds for the Wimmera Health Care Group Foundation with its goal to have $1-million in capital by the end of 2014. “The capital is held in perpetuity with only the interest being used to fund projects,” Mr Johns said. “The trustees are confident of reaching the goal well before the target date and the foundation will then be able to commit up to $60,000 for projects within the Horsham and Dimboola campuses of the Wimmera Health Care Group,” he said. “Projects funded and supported by the foundation to date include Kurrajong

Nationals member for Lowan Hugh Delahunty has urged regional library lovers to have their say on the future of public libraries before a May 16 cut-off. Mr Delahunty said the State Government was committed to supporting local government to ensure public libraries remained a ‘vibrant, modern and effective resource for all Victorians’.

The largest merino breeding trial field day in Australia at Balmoral on April 19 will feature progeny from 37 rams across four states and help launch a new technological management system.

The Western Victorian Elders Balmoral Sire Evaluation Trial field day will provide a rare opportunity for graziers to view and compare the best merino genetics in Australia. The trial group’s entrepreneurial committee will use the occasion to launch the new management system which captures the animals’ body weight with the use of RFID electronic tags and an in-paddock weighing system.

“Publishing its landmark research in December last year, the Ministerial Advisory Council on Public Libraries proposed the concept of the ‘Victorian Library’ as a way to meet future needs.

Health service chief executive Nick Bush expressed his relief in filling the position.

“This concept has the potential to break down borders and open up new opportunities for library providers and users alike, so we’d like to know what people think about it.”

He said Mr Tellambura was practicing at Swan Hill and would work two weeks a month in Ararat and progressively increase his time in Ararat.

Mr Delahunty said the second stage of consultation would assess the ‘Victorian Library’ concept and review funding.

He said Mr Maqbool was working at Griffith in NSW and would work one week each month in Ararat.

Library lovers Field day at Balmoral to have a say

“We know Victorians love local libraries, so it’s important for people to have a say on what they would like to see in the library of tomorrow,” Mr Delahunty said.

Mr Shantha Tellambura and Mr Abrar Maqbool will jointly fill the fulltime surgeon position in Ararat.

Both surgeons will consult from East Grampians Health Service Community Health Centre in Girdlestone Street. General Practitioners can send referrals to Mr Maqbool directly to the health centre and to Mr Tellambura to his rooms in Swan Hill.

manager Jane Smith: “I am very pleased that the resident general surgeon position has been filled by two highly skilled general surgeons with previous rural practice experience.”

First time offered for lease, this property has been owner occupied for the past 35 years.

“I encourage people to provide their feedback online, and answer a few simple questions about e-books and online resources, a single library card for all Victorian libraries, and access to resources anywhere in the state from here in western Victoria,” Mr Delahunty said.

“Max Wright Cars” has happily provided a specialization in used cars to Horsham and surrounds for 13 years. Max started out in farm machinery sales where he worked for 20 years when he made the move into car sales for another company before finally starting his own dream “Max Wright Cars”. Max, Harry and Ashley have all been in business together since the beginning in March 2000, with Harry having a rich background in car sales “I’ve been selling cars for 33 years and still learning” he said. The boys don’t just stop there, they’re also agents for Avis Rent A Car, having become affiliated with Avis 2 years ago. Max Wright Cars has a large rental fleet. He said “we have anything from a Toyota Corolla up to a 6 ton truck or 21 seater bus”. ill retirement become a thing of the past? Research over recent years suggests that the secret to a long and healthy life is to continue working and to stay in control of your finances and life.

Light Weight!

The nature of work may change – fewer hours, less stress, new career – and with good planning it is possible to have all the good things associated with retirement such as more leisure, time with family, travel and new activities. Can the government afford to support the Baby Boomers through retirement? Is early retirement and paying pensions for longer life spans sustainable?

Our leaders are also concerned about the shrinking pool of workers in a growing economy. In 2007, there were five workers for every person over age 65 but by 2050 it is projected that the ratio will have fallen to just 2.7 workers. Many people who retire to the beach

Research shows being active and engaged in life leads to a healthier and longer life. This doesn’t have to be paid employment but for many of us it is what provides the challenge and excitement. Many people who could retire choose to keep working for the love of it, or if money is no longer an issue, offering their experience and knowledge in volunteer positions – here or across the world. Maybe there will soon come a time when the word ‘retirement’ will disappear from our vocabularies because more people will want to keep on keeping on? • Robert Goudie is an authorised representative of Meritum Financial Group Pty Ltd AFSL 245569.

Gebert fires first shot midway through the day that the duo got to taste hometown success.

The O’Sullivans saddled up NZ-imported galloper Koe for the $25,000 sprint over 1350 metres. With gun provincial rider Linda Meech in the saddle, punters warmed to the chestnut mare, trimming her starting price to $4.60.

H

orsham trainer Simon Gebert’s good fortunes continued on the weekend, getting the chocolates in the opening race at Sunday’s Stawell Gold Cup meeting.

Gebert put the polish on maiden galloper Centa Shot for an 1100-metre event. Ridden by up-and-coming apprentice Luke Londregan, the brown gelding was a despised outsider in the race – $17 was the best price available. Once the barrier stalls opened Centa Shot flew out of the machines and hit the ground running. His young hoop was left to his own devices out in front and was able to ride his own race. After enjoying a challenge-free run throughout, the son of bread-and-butter stallion Regal Shot gave a strong kick in the home straight to hold off second-placegetter Chicote Bar to score a one-length victory. The win was Centa Shot’s first and a special one for Gebert, racing the galloper with his family and also having trained the mother of his latest winner, My Centana.

O’Sullivan and Koe Rarely does a Stawell Cup meeting go by without the father-daughter training combination of Terry and Karina O’Sullivan playing some part in the action. This year was no exception, albeit after a slow start. It wasn’t until

Once the nine-horse field was on its way, Meech elected to take Koe to the rear, with only one horse behind her. The daughter of Golden Slipper place-getting stallion Align was able to enjoy a patient run on the rails creeping up on the leading bunch just before turning for home. Koe angled into clear galloping room after balancing up, coming with a barnstorming run down the outside nosing out Shysta in a tight finish. The win was career victory number five for Koe and the third for the O’Sullivan camp since crossing the Tasman almost a year ago.

In brief • Kings A Star wins Centrebet Stawell Gold Cup for Cranbourne trainer Mark Loft and jockey Ruth Bradley. • Stawell trainer David Noonan enjoyed a double at Warracknnabeal on Easter Saturday with gallopers Ringa Tin Tin and Space Diva. • The Yendall household had a successful Easter with Christine Puls riding a double at Warracknabeal and husband Dean Yendall winning aboard Inala Wonder at Stawell. • The O’Sullivan stable had more success with Pilot’s Choice winning the opening event at Warracknabeal for Horsham jockey Holly McKecknie. • Josh Mackay is treasurer and executive of Horsham and District Racing Club.

RISING STAR: Horsham teenager Anna Bush competes on the big stage, running in the McDonald’s Little Athletics 400-metre mixed handicap at Stawell’s Central Park on Monday, as part of the Stawell Gift carnival. Bush, 13, finished third in the race won by Frankston’s Matthew Rizzo. She was unable to defend her 100-metre title, failing to make the final after receiving a handicap of 0.5 metres, giving a 17.75 metre headstart to heat winner Rachel Jackson of Bacchus Marsh. Below, Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell talks to Channel Ten’s Rob Waters about his disappointment at having to withdraw from the Stawell Gift due to a hamstring injury. Powell told Waters he will ‘definitely’ be back for a second attempt at the race.

And here’s to you, Mr Robinson C

By GREG O’CONNOR

entral Park has claimed another high-profile victim, with former world record holder Asafa Powell walking away empty-handed in his quest to win Australia’s richest footrace, the Stawell Gift.

The former 100-metre world record holder, the fastest man to ever run at Stawell, was forced to withdraw from the chase for the $40,000 race after hamstring tightness hampered his campaign. Powell, 30, finished third in his heat on Saturday, and qualified for semi finals, but withdrew on Monday when his leg injury failed to improve. He’s not the first big-name athlete to fail at Stawell. And I’m sure he won’t be the last. Central Park’s grass surface and seemingly tight lane ropes, combined with an extra 20 metres, a tough handicap system, cut-throat semi finals and the event’s laidback carnival atmosphere have resulted in the downfall of many elite athletes over the years, with the Jamaican sprint sensation just the latest on the list.

Experience Just like Ballarat’s Matthew Wiltshire in 2012, it took a runner with regional racetrack experience to take out the iconic event. Devonport Gift winner and Launceston student Andrew Robinson became the first Tasmanian in 72 years to win the race in a nail-biting conclusion on Monday afternoon. Running off 7.25m, the 20-year-old ran 12.01 seconds to take victory by just two hundredths of a second and was ecstatic with the win. “Oh my god. I’m lost for words. I knew I was in good shape coming here but to win the thing. To win this, my life has changed,” Robinson said. “I went out there to run as fast as I can and when those back markers get to me kick like a mule and get to that finish line first.” It was a dramatic start to proceedings when race backmarker and $1.30 favourite Mitchell Williams-Swain, initially running off 4.5m, broke and was pulled back a further metre. Robinson said he was quietly confident after the restart. “I thought my luck might be in. When that happened I was quietly happy about

it myself,” he said. “But I still knew I had to execute. I put that behind me pretty quickly.” Halfway down the Central Park straight Robinson hit the lead but with the finish frame looming, sensed the threat of the nuggety Queenslander. “I could feel him. I could see him. Out of the corner of my eye the red coming on. I thought ‘get there, get there’ and the line couldn’t come quick enough and I got there so I am rapt.” Williams-Swain, who ran 11.95 seconds in a semi-final, narrowly failed in his bid to become just the fourth two-time winner of the race recording 12.03 seconds.

Dedication Robinson could not progress out of the heats of last year’s Gift, finishing third to eventual winner Matt Wiltshire, and dedicated his win to coach Ray Quarrell who lost his home in January’s Dunalley bushfires in Tasmania. “I wanted to go out there this weekend and make him proud. I love him like a second dad,” said Robinson. Quarrell coaches his charge remotely and despite seeing him only once every fortnight knew he was ready for the big race. “We rested Andrew last week from the state titles. Then I trialled him and I knew he would have a great shot at Stawell. We came over and we did it,” Quarrell said.

There was more cash flowing for the Robinson family. On Friday the betting opened at $81. “My old man got on, so he’s going to be a very happy man right now,” Robinson said. Robinson said the $40,000 winner’s cheque would be a life-changer. “I am a uni student. I’d like to buy a new car and put the rest to a house or the HECS debt,” he said. Robinson joins Harry Rigby, 1909, and William ‘Ken’ Hutton, 1941, as the only Tasmanians to win the big race.

Drama There was plenty of drama in the Women’s Gift where Sydney’s Davina Strauss – off 10 metres – was a comfortable winner in 13.98 seconds. In Saturday’s heats the former world master beach sprint champion ran a sensational 13.69 seconds before organisers pulled her 4m for the final, citing a lack of relevant information at the time of original handicapping. And while Asafa Powell was scratched from the semi-finals there was still a Jamaican victory at Central Park with Khan Marr, a former bobsleigh competitor now living in Australia, winning the Chris Perry Memorial Invitation Backmarkers race in 12.23 seconds.

IT’S ALL MINE: Launceston sprinter Andrew Robinson celebrates winning the $40,000 Stawell Gift at Central Park on Monday.

Kees look set to turn it on again The list of losses headed by Gavin and Heath Kelm, Pat Purcell, Chris Farrell, Steve Thomas, Andrew Seers, Adam Hall and Ash Hastie will leave the club staring at a long, tough season based around last year’s secondtier players taking the next step.

HORSHAM DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE

M

By GRANT KUCHEL

ore than 200 days on from the triumph, heartache and tears of their grand final clash, reigning premiers Kalkee and Edenhope-Apsley will meet again to kick off season 2013.

The recruitment of Sam Clyne and Nathan Koenig is a positive step for the club but Laharum will want to send a message to other sides that they are serious contenders this season.

Kalkee have reloaded their playing arsenal with the return of premiership quartet Andrew Brown, Tim Pickert and Grant and Steve Schultz, along with Ballarat’s Ben Hobbs and key onballer Aaron Barnett and Damien Thomson from Horsham. It’s little wonder early-season pundits have Kalkee a short-priced favourite to defend their title. Edenhope-Apsley will be hell-bent on reversing the final result from last year. Unfortunately the only thing hinging on this game is the opening four points of the season not the ultimate reward of a premiership glory as was on the line last time they met. The Saints are now under the tutelage of James Dixon and last season’s assistant coach Mal Coutts. The welltravelled Coutts comes to the senior position with a reputation of being able to develop a player list based around the younger players and the Saints will be hoping he can lift the talented youngsters to the next level. New recruits Hayden Cartledge and Brent Christie will be expected to play major roles and the rumour mill abounds that the Saints are still awaiting of a couple of high profile Western Border League players to commit pen to paper, but the loss of key players Mike Ryan and Addison Milner will be hard to cover.

HDFL round one This Saturday Kalkee v Edenhope-Apsley at Kalkee Swifts v Noradjuha-Quantong at North Park, Stawell Rupanyup v Harrow-Balmoral at Rupanyup Laharum v Taylors Lake at Laharum Natimuk v Pimpinio at Natimuk

The Demons have had a big preseason after a disappointing finals campaign and will be expecting huge things from a number of last year’s premiership under-17s headed by Joe Harrison.

HIGH FIVE: Kalkee players celebrate the club’s fifth straight premiership at Horsham City Oval last September. More than sixth months later and the Kees are ready to face grand-final combatants Edenhope-Apsley in the season opener. Pictures: WILLAMY IMAGES

Matt Beddison is again at the helm of Kalkee and he will be wanting his side to start the season the way it finished last year and with the list of recruits back in the red and blue jumper they should leave the Kalkee oval with a win and four premiership points on the board as their premiership defence begins.

Top-three hopes Part two of an entertaining opening round takes place at North Park in Stawell where the Swifts host Noradjuha Quantong. Both sides will have serious top-three aspirations and will be wanting to get their season off on a winning note. The Baggies prior to Easter hadn’t had a lot of movement into the camp but coach Paul Hanns must be excited with the recruitment of Jack Kelly, Ash Cowan and joint coach Ben Martin who will provide plenty of grunt to a Baggies side wanting to take the next step late in September. They will be extremely mindful that over the last two years they have been slow starters and spend of lot of the season playing catch-up football. Noradjuha Quantong has been one side pretty active in the recruiting stakes with the addition of new coach Adam Hall from Taylors Lake, Matt Ward from Harrow Balmoral, Ben

Anson and Brady King from Natimuk and Jarred Combe returns to the club from Beulah. With numerous youngsters blossoming they loom as a serious threat to the Baggies and may well be fighting it out with Swifts for a double chance at season’s end. It will be interesting to see the game plan the Bombers play under first-year coach Hall. Expect it to be a fast, hard running game and the Baggies will need reigning Dellar Medallist Ricky Whitehead, Zac Salmi and Hanns at their best to grab the points at sirens end.

Roos on rebound Rupanyup welcome Harrow Balmoral to their home turf and the Roos will be hell-bent on returning to finals action after being in the unfamiliar territory of also-rans last season. The Panthers on the other hand will be wanting to build on last season’s finals appearance and will again base their season around a fitter Matt Tyler, brother Andrew Tyler and veteran Tim Webb if he pulls the boots on again. Prior to Easter there had been no clearances into the Panther camp but tall Zac May should be a valuable acquisition once paperwork is lodged.

The Panthers would be hopeful of signing a few players from their fruitful area in the North Central region. Harrow-Balmoral have headed south to recruit Brent Forsyth as coach and I’m sure there will be a few new recruits signed before season’s start and along with the returning Chris Heath the Roos will be looking to charge back into finals calculations this season. The Roos would be targeting the Hamilton area for key players after the merging of the two sides down there so it will be interesting to see who pulls on a blue-and-white jumper come round one. The loss of key forward Zane Bigmore will hurt Rupanyup. They will have to find another avenue to goal and it may be that Matt Tyler plays more as a deep key forward this season while May handles the ruck duties. Even the great Roos sides of past years have struggled to win at Rupanyup and expect it to continue as the Panthers snare the points.

Decimated Lakers Laharum will probably be sitting atop of the ladder after round one as they account for a Taylors Lake side that has been absolutely decimated by the loss of key players from the club.

Saturday Night, April 6

Junior Fashions

Laharum still boasts a potent onball line-up with Shannon Argall and Robbie Miller who will have a huge impact on the contest and assure the likes of veteran Jason Przibilla get plenty of the ball to make sure Laharum kicks a big score.

Messiah steps down The final game of the round was to see the messiah, dual premiership coach Gary Davidson return to fold at Pimpinio to take charge of a club that will possibly have the youngest list in the competition. But Davidson has resigned from the position and Daryl Eastwell will take the reins against a Natimuk side led by new coach Dylan Wright. Eastwell is an experienced campaigner and a previous coach of the club but surely he will find it hard for the first couple of weeks to implement his game day philosophies. The Rams are hopeful that Wright will be able to bring a number of new players to the club and with the addition of Tim Friend, the Natimuk side will certainly be a more competitive unit in 2013. There is little doubt that Pimpinio will base their game around young, fast legs and with youngsters we see inconsistent performances not only from game to game but from quarter to quarter. If the Rams’ bigger, stronger bodies can influence the contest and limit the Tigers’ running game then an absorbing contest should result.

Wounded Eagles look to rebuild I

By GREG O’CONNOR

At a glance

f William Shakespeare were around today, and a Wimmera Football League fan – and why wouldn’t he be? – he’d probably tweet something like, “Alas, poor Warrack. We knew them well.”

of everyone and we really struggled for a lot of the off-season.”

The high-flying Warrack Eagles were the only team to beat league powerhouse Horsham during the past four seasons. And they did it three times. Convincingly.

Lindsay said the loss of senior experience would be tough to cover but had created plenty of opportunities for younger members of the group under new leader, former Warrack Eagle and SANFL premiership player Tim Inkster.

But the club’s inability to pull off the feat on the biggest day of the year has left them broken, looking to pick up the pieces of two failed grand final campaigns against the dominant Demons. The team has lost nine of its starting 18 from last year’s grand final, including match-winning co-coaches Steve and Grant Schultz and a lot of the forward line that got it to consecutive premiership deciders. Even club president David Stewart has stepped aside, making way for some new leadership at the Warrack Eagles. His replacement, Bernie Lindsay, admits the going has been tough as

the club looks to regroup for another assault at the league’s ultimate prize. “Last year was devastating, there’s no doubt about that,” Lindsay told The Weekly Advertiser.

“To beat Horsham in a final and in the home-and-away series, only to lose to them in another grand final – it wrecked everyone,” he said. “We battled to get commitment out

wish all football and netball teams the best of luck for the 2013 season!

“There’s no doubt the Schultz boys were fantastic for the club, and we wish them all the best back at Kalkee, but I can’t describe how great it’s been to get a coach with Tim’s experience,” he said. “There’s been fabulous comments from senior and junior players at the club and you can see the difference another step in experience makes. “Hopefully this is the beginning of a getting former players back to the club.” The club has re-signed key de-

fender Ben Harrison and centre-halfforward Peter Weir, along with captain Ben Spicer, but will need to find ready-made replacements for younggun full forward Jesse Murphy and goal-kicking on-ballers Kyle George and Cade Wellington – both off to Hopetoun in the Mallee league. Cade Williams is returning to his home club Dromana, Anthony McKenzie is Beulah-bound, defender Adam Schulz is off to try his luck at Jeparit-Rainbow while fellow defender Dan Krahe had an injury-enforced early retirement from football.

New style Lindsay said the club would look to develop its young players as it works on a new playing style under Inkster. “We’ll be looking to young players like Dale Hinkley, Luke and Kyle Kemp and Jack Wilson to make the step up this year,” he said. And the club will be hoping the North Ballarat Roosters can’t find a spot for young ruckman James Kirby, who dominated in a recent practice match, and will play for the Eagles when not required in the VFL. Lindsay remains optimistic about the year ahead as the club rebuilds. “Realistically we’ll be middle of the road, but we’re hoping to make finals and from there who knows what could happen?”

Wishing all teams a successful 2013 season.

Top recruits set for big season opener MALLEE FOOTBALL LEAGUE By MICK SHANNON

The 2013 Speed Field Days Mallee Football League is set to kick off with a bang this Saturday, with most teams recruiting well in what will be another strong season. Last year’s premiers Walpeup-Underbool will be looking to make it two in a row, while Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers will be hungry after succumbing to defeat in the past two grand finals. Hopetoun will be out to make amends after missing a big opportunity to play in the grand final in 2012, while Beulah, Woomelang-Lascelles, Ouyen United and Jeparit-Rainbow will be looking to show a lot of improvement.

Promise EIRE TO THE TITLE: Horsham croquet player Ken Bald with the Eire Cup trophy he won with the Victorian team in Adelaide. Picture: GREG O’CONNOR

Ken does it again By GREG O’CONNOR

H

orsham croquet player Ken Bald is in line for Australian selection after winning the national Eire Cup for Victoria last month.

Bald dominated the week-long national event in Adelaide, going undefeated in the singles and losing just one doubles match with his Lismore-based teenage partner Malcolm Fletcher. Victoria won the Eire Cup over runner-up Western Australia, with New South Wales in third, followed by Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania. Bald, the 2011 Wimmera Sports Star of the Year, said it was a great feeling to be able to bring the trophy to Horsham to show fellow players at Kalimna Park Croquet Club.

“I’m absolutely stoked to win this,” he said. “It’s a great thing to be a part of.”

The national success continues a great run for Bald, who won two silver medals at the Australian Association Croquet Championships in Brisbane late last year, his best return at that event since 2004-05. Bald won silver in the singles, going down to world number four and former pupil Robert Fletcher of Lismore, then teamed with Fletcher’s younger brother Malcolm to claim silver in the doubles. He backed up in the Australian Bronze medal tournament in Melbourne, and invitation only event, where he won a bronze medal. From there he went on to Wimmera Pairs success and an unbeaten run at the Country Week

tournament at Swan Hill

Bald’s national ranking has risen to number three as a result of his success, and number 19 in the world. He believes he has done enough to be selected for Australia in the MacRobertson International Croquet Shield in New Zealand this December. “I’ve ticked off all the right events,” he said. “It’s up to the selectors now.” Bald believed this to be his most successful and consistent time in the sport. And at 68, he is still a big advocate for hard work away from competition as the key to success. “If you’re prepared to do the hard work in practice, you’ll get the rewards,” he said. “You get out what you put in.”

The first match of the year will kick off at Hopetoun with the Devils doing battle with Woomelang-Lascelles. Hopetoun will start the game as favourites but no one is quite sure what to expect from either side after both teams had interesting off-seasons. Woomelang-Lascelles has managed to hang on to the majority of its list from last year while adding gun player Corey Kelly along with Joseph Kelly and Dwayne Hamlyn. The Cats showed plenty of promise last year and should show lots of improvement in 2013. Although Hopetoun has lost star player and coach Kain Robins, as well as Anthony Baker, they have still managed to recruit good players in Pat Purcell, Kyle George, Owen Hone and Cade Wellington that should see them take the four points. Blackburn Park in Ouyen should see some quality football when the Demons welcome Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers to their home ground. Ouyen Untied has had a mass exodus of players including 2012 coach Ryan O’Callaghan along with his brother Adam. The list goes on with the Demons but they may still have hope for a bright 2013 if former AFL player Damien Cupido is in the fold.

It is the Tigers who have been the talk of the off-season though with their ability to recruit local players back to the club a massive coup for the senior side. Tom Summerhayes, Jason Hannig, Wes Harrison and Wes Sewell are all returning and should put the Tigers right up at the top of the ladder this year. This game will be an interesting battle, but Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers will prove to be too strong for the Demons.

Premiers The last game of the round sees reigning premiers Walpeup-Underbool do battle with Jeparit-Rainbow at Rainbow. The Roos have lost some quality players from last year’s premiership team starting with coach Jeremy Rowe along with star on ballers Josh Stone, Ryan Anderson and Sam McDonald. They have managed to pull in Ben Fisher, brother of St Kilda’s Sam, who should be a powerful player for the Roos. The Lakers have lost a lot of good players with Ash Clugston, Sean Bayzand, Justin Chilver and Andrew Watson all leaving for greener pastures. Jeparit-Rainbow could be a surprise packet though with Adam Shulz coming across from Warracknabeal, Northern Territory footballers Ryan Bulluss and Josh McCleary, plus AFL Queensland player Greg Mcleish. There are several more on the list for the Lakers as well that should see them be very competitive in 2013. Still expect the Roos to get up in what should be a very interesting match. Beulah has the bye.

Radical motor for electric Holden A

Melbourne-based start-up will soon start trials of a radical new motor in Australia’s only electric Commodore.

would just shove in another microprocessor with the idea that I would come back to that problem later,” Jahshan said. “When I completed the motor, it became apparent the multiple processors were the key to the design,” he said.

Smaller, lighter and less expensive than conventional units, the motor will power one of EV Engineering’s fleet of electrified Holden Commodores that feature a battery pack under the bonnet in place of a petrol engine. Developing 150kW of power and a truck-like 2800Nm of torque – compared with 145kW/400Nm for the current EVE Commodore – the new motor is also claimed to be up to 30 percent more efficient and 36kg lighter, contributing to increased battery range. Rather than requiring a heavily modified rear sub-frame as with the current EVE Commodore, the more compact motor is hoped to fit inside a standard Holden rear differential, enabling the standard sub-frame to be retained. The motor’s more compact size is largely due to the fact its design allows it to dispense of a separate transmission and inverter electronics. Developed by Victorian electronic engineer David Jahshan and his company Axiflux, the adaptive magnetic flux array motor uses switching components that were prohibitively ex-

EVE chief engineer Tim Olding said the motor was different in another aspect, as all the poles and magnets were on the same axis as the rotor. “It’s not three phase like other electric motors, it’s 23 phase, which means the system can selectively turn off, or shut down, parts of the motor.”

BRIGHT SPARK: The adaptive magnetic flux array motor dispenses of a separate inverter and transmission to reduce size and cost.

pensive until the popularity of plasma televisions brought the price down. EV Engineering – formed by a group of local car parts makers and service providers – last year converted seven Holden Commodores to electric power to demonstrate the feasibility of electric-powered large cars. Following the successful completion of the construction phase, the seven Commodores are now out on the road in the hands of interested parties, but EV Engineering has had to be scaled back in size.

The AMFA project has arrived in time to dispel some of the uncertainty over EVE’s future following the announcement last month that major partner, EV charging infrastructure provider and battery swap technology pioneer Better Place, was having its Australian funding cut. EVE will help with the development of the AMFA motor by using one of its Commodores as a mobile test bed. In a system similar in concept to cylinder deactivation technology on internal combustion engines, the

new motor has 23 embedded microcontrollers that automatically adjust power consumption to the immediate needs of the driver and the vehicle. Mr Jahshan said his new motor comprises 23 little segments, each controlled by its own micro-processor.

This means the power efficiency of the motor at part load can be as high as 95 per cent, whereas other electric motors sink as low as 70 percent efficiency under part load. Mr Olding said there were other advantages. Having the microprocessors embedded in the motor eliminated the need for a separate inverter, greatly easing the packaging problem.

This would have been prohibitively expensive a few years ago, but the cost of the processors has fallen from $50 each to around $2 now.

In addition, the characteristics of the motor are such that the car designer can do away with a gearbox and incorporate the differential into the motor unit.

“As I was designing the motor, whenever I ran into a problem, I

oyota has introduced trailer sway control as standard equipment across its LandCruiser 200 Series range, the first time the technology has been used on a Toyota vehicle in Australia.

TIME TO CRUISE: Toyota has added a sway control system across the LandCruiser 200 range and increased the number of airbags in some models.

the GXL, $95,990 for VX and $114,990 for Sahara. The trailer sway system has been designed to stop the trailer from uncontrollable swaying in situations such as strong winds, unexpected bumps on the road or even a sharp steering wheel turn.

Higher spec VX and Sahara models are already fitted with 10 airbags each. Recommended retail prices have risen by $1500, with the LandCruiser 200 now kicking off from $78,990 plus on-road costs for the base five-seat GX in 4.5-litre V8 turbodiesel guise, $89,990 for the eight-seat GXL, $100,990 for seven-seat VX and $119,990 for the flagship seven-seat turbo-diesel Sahara.

Fuel boost for FJ T

oyota has doubled the fuel range of its retro-inspired FJ Cruiser all-wheel-drive wagon as a part of a minor upgrade that also brings a $1500 price rise.

The price increase to $47,990 for the single-variant off-roader comes days after Toyota’s local arm added extra gear to its flagship LandCruiser 200 for an extra $1500. The FJ Cruiser has added a second fuel tank with an 87-litre capacity, increasing the overall fuel reserve from 72 to 159 litres. This compares with 150 litres for the Prado mid-size soft-roader on which the FJ Cruiser is based. Toyota said the second fuel sub-tank boosted the theoretical driving range of the FJ Cruiser to 1060km in the city and more than 1700km for highway driving. Power for the FJ Cruiser continues to come from a 200kW 4.0-litre V6 petrol engine mated to a five-speed automatic transmission with fuel economy figures of 11.4 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined cycle. The FJ Cruiser’s off-road

CONQUEST: Mercedes-Benz dealers are getting younger buyers hooked on the brand earlier with the desirable but relatively affordable new A-Class.

Mercedes first-timers flock to A-Class CRUISE CONTROL: The CRAWL system in Toyota’s FJ Cruiser assists the driver by maintaining a low speed in difficult terrain.

ability has been given a shot in the arm with the addition of Toyota’s ‘CRAWL’ off-road cruise control system. Toyota describes the system as “a ‘feet-off’ control system that helps take the vehicle over severe or slippery terrain”. The system controls engine output and brake pressure to maintain a low vehicle speed both up and down hill, allowing the driver to focus on steering. CRAWL engages when the vehicle is in low-range but disengages when travelling at speeds above 25km/h or above 10km/h when the rear

differential is locked. By minimising situations such as wheel-spin and tyre lock-up, the system increases the stability of the vehicle in uncertain off-road conditions. Toyota said that the CRAWL system should reduce the likelihood of damage to the vehicle by controlling speed over difficult terrain. The driver can choose one of five speeds via a speedselector dial in the overhead console and the system can only be engaged under certain conditions. Tim Nicholson © GoAutoMedia, 2013

the customer for life and it is no different with us, we just want to get them a bit earlier now,” said Mr von Sanden.

“They came in, probably for the first time to MercedesBenz triggered by the new A-Class, and saw that ‘Yes it is a great car, but this one suits us a bit better’ and took another one.”

Mr McCarthy pointed out that because top-end A-Class and B-Class variants occupy the $50,000 price range, customers jumping directly to a C-Class – from $58,600 plus on-road costs – does happen.

MBA managing director Horst von Sanden added that A-Class enquiry had in some cases led to customers driving away in larger models.

Drawing new customers to the brand is great news for Benz, especially as the relatively affordable, sporty AClass appeals to a younger demographic. In markets that received the A-Class before Australia, the average buyer is in their late 30s.

“People who come in to Mercedes dealerships have actually got the luxury of choice so it’s an A-Class they might want, or a B-Class or CClass so in that price bracket they are pretty much spoilt for choice.”

“We have evidence already in the early days that custom-

Mercedes-Benz has already experienced the effects of its new A-Class attracting new customers to the brand in Australia. Speaking at the official AClass launch in Melbourne recently, Mercedes-Benz Australia senior corporate communications manager David McCarthy said around 50 percent of the 1000 people who pre-ordered an A-Class had never owned a Mercedes before.

Beetle juiced up L

ike Monika Lewinsky, the Macarena and referring to rain on your wedding day as ironic, the last New Beetle belonged firmly in the 1990s, despite stumbling on to 2011. Yes, it was cool for five seconds around the New Millennium, but unlike the Dot Com crash, this automotive fad didn’t die quick enough. Heck, even Friends was over by 2004.

But Germans being the niche-exploiting experts they are, VW couldn’t just leave well enough alone when it was clear the New Beetle had turned into a social embarrassment. So here’s the ‘The Beetle’ – perhaps the most infuriating name in motoring since the Kia C’eed. With a ’60s original and a VW Baja Bug plonked beside them for inspiration, the Wolfsburg stylists threw away the protractors and compasses from the last time, creating a lower, wider, longer and flatter-roofed retromobile. It looks less caricature-like and a whole lot less twee than previously, with slightly more convincing visual connections to the original, but this is still a modern pastiche of dubious shelf-life longevity. Inside, progress has been much better, mainly because of the dramatically improved packaging brought about by the extra dimensions and proportional rethink. Now, the windscreen base isn’t far away like a distant horizon; people with heads and feet can now comfortably use the twin rear seats and luggage capacity has improved significantly. Fans of the ‘Typ-1’ Beetle will recognise the flat horizontal fascia with its hooded instrument binnacle and bodycoloured orange-peel paint treatment that stretches to the door cards, and perhaps even appreciate the – near useless – lidded rectangular compartment that resides above a more conventional hinged glovebox.

Skittish rear end over bumpy corners, heavyhanded styling, no diesel option, $2.5K price hike

Along with the still-domed roof and corresponding window line, the ambience is distinctively modern Bug. Great front seats, a decent driving position, plenty of ventilation, easy rear-bench entry, sufficiently comfy cushions in the back, heaps of storage places and cupholders, and all the VW parts-bin switches and controls means there is a well-oiled richness to the way today’s Beetle is presented, matched by a lift in quality due to the binning of most cheapo plastics. Vision is unexpectedly good due to more upright pillars, deep side windows, and a large rear glass area. But in the $32,290 Sport Pack DSG we drove first up, with additional auxiliary dials plonked where a shallow dash-top recess would otherwise reside, any premium pretences were obliterated by squeaky ill-fitment. This included rattley door trim as the 18-inch low-profile tyres transmitted bumps as well as noise into the cabin the moment the road surface showed the first sign of creasing or cracking. We’ve driven a good many different modern VWs, Audis and Skodas sharing variations of the Beetle’s PQ35 platform, and all but this car boast a sophisticated multi-link rear suspension that does much to keep the car feeling planted yet controlled. But Wolfsburg’s beancounters clearly think Beetle owners aren’t worthy of such refinement, because VW has fitted a simpler, if lighter and space-saving, torsion beam axle instead.

We wonder whether most buyers will notice or even care if they’re not familiar with how a similarly tyred Golf glides over the sort of bumps that ever-so-slightly knock the Beetle’s tail off line, but the Sport Pack’s larger wheel package amplifies the effect. Find a smooth road, though, and you’ll wonder why we’re fussing. The steering feel is commendably linear, the handling nicely responsive yet controlled, and the roadholding tenacious. This isn’t a bad car at all from behind the flatbottomed steering wheel. If you own a petrol-powered version of the old New Beetle – besides the rorty 1.8-litre turbo of a decade ago, the 118TSI Twincharger engine will be a revelation. This unit is a shining example of why VW is sitting pretty at the moment, being quiet, sweet, smooth and yet plenty strong in its torque delivery from near standstill to the 6500rpm rev limiter thanks to the seamless integration of both a turbo and supercharger. You would never call the Beetle sporty – let alone a sportscar – but this engine adds a level of classy accomplishment to a series that has never known such a thing. And we suspect there would be nothing especially cool about being seen in this Flower Power throwback, even if the Germans have mercifully banished the dreaded daisy vase. A Golf is cheaper and frankly miles ahead in virtually every department. Byron Mathioudakis © GoAutoMedia, 2013

Ferrari adds to Australian stable F

errari has retaken the reins of the brand in Australia, winding back a seven-year association with new-car entrepreneur Neville Crichton.

PRANCING ON: The LaFerrari is the latest supercar from the iconic Italian brand that has taken Australian distribution in-house.

From April 1, the car-maker says it will take over the importation of the Prancing Horse badge in Australia, with Mr Crichton’s Sydney-based European Automotive Importers business stepping back but retaining its NSW retail space and distribution services. Mr Crichton told GoAuto that the factory takeover of the import and distribution side of the business was ‘inevitable’. “They’ll do their own importing, and they’ll have their own sales team to run the network,” Mr Crichton said. “I’ll be supporting that. It was always going to happen – we were one of the last private importers in the world virtually,” he said. Mr Crichton said over the sevenyear association, his business had sold around 1100 cars wearing the Prancing Horse badge – a number to be proud of. Herbert Appleroth, who will oversee Ferrari’s new Australian market as its chief executive, told GoAuto that the shift in focus for the brand was similar to a factory takeover of

the Japanese market last year. He said Ferrari’s move would take better control of what he said were “mature markets”. Mr Appleroth said the change in command would benefit customers through a closer tie with the Maranello-based company. “It’s part of a restructure right throughout the world,” Mr Appleroth said. “Ferrari SpA is taking back control of its mature markets worldwide.” Ferrari sells about 120 cars a year in Australia, keeping in mind Enzo Ferrari’s philosophy that the car-maker

would always try and sell one less car than what demand calls for to build exclusivity. The brand has been a part of the Australian landscape for 61 years. “(Australia) is different to other parts of the world where there is still very strong growth potential,” Mr Appleroth said.

Marinello and Italy, and to have our own representatives here … allows us to get a one-to-one relationship with clients.” Part of that process is ensuring that owners take the keys to their new Ferraris as soon as possible.

“We believe that there is growth potential in Australia and New Zealand, but it is not the reason why we are taking over.

Mr Appleroth said the supercar maker would work to curb waiting lists that can blow out as far as three years for some new models, with the aim of uniting cars and new owners within 12 months.

“We’re taking over because we’re getting closer to our end customer -- Australia is a long, long way from

Australian Ferrari owners do high kilometres compared with other world markets, averaging about

9000km a year. This compares with places such as Japan, where the annual average is just 1500km. Mr Appleroth said even Italian drivers – the home ground for Ferrari – were driving less, but mainly as an austerity measure in the face of Europe’s currency crisis. In the 61 years the Ferrari brand has sold here, more than 2500 cars have rolled into Australian driveways. Ferrari’s annual production is currently about 7500 cars. Barry Park © GoAutoMedia, 2013
