The committee and staff are excited to host this year’s event, which has a proud tradition of showcasing the best the world has to offer in agriculture and technologies to the communities of our region and further afield.

Our patrons enjoy a relaxed day to look around and conduct business with our many exhibitors. It is also a fantastic opportunity to gather socially and catch up with acquaintances.

Agriculture is ever changing. Technology and engineering are moving forward at incredible speeds.

Farming practices that our grandparents would only have dreamt of are now common and the Wimmera Machinery Field Days provides an excellent platform for all visitors to see, learn and explore new ideas and innovations to help their chosen field.

The Wimmera Machinery Field Days committee is a volunteer organisation and the members bring together a wide range of ideas, experience, abilities and passion for our event.

his year the Wimmera Machinery Field Days welcomes Australia’s major agricultural machinery dealers and leading agribusiness companies to the region.

We proudly claim to host Victoria’s premier broadacre event and one of the biggest displays of farming machinery in Australia, with practically every brand of large farming and broadacre agricultural machine or product currently on the market.

There is no doubting the significance of the Wimmera Machinery Field Days and the role this internationally recognised major event plays in the strength of agriculture in this region.

Some of our local machinery dealers have doubled the size of their sites this year, creating some huge spaces, so expect to see some very impressive displays of the biggest machines on the market.

More importantly the event attracts major agricultural companies and dealers, all coming here knowing that the field days acts as the first positive step to the next year of rural business for our region’s primary producers The middle day of the field days is our traditional family day, and following the success of this revamped feature day last year, we are pleased to offer family-friendly attractions and popular concerts and shows in our auditorium.

On show will be impressive entries as part of the annual Victorian Farm Sculpture Competition.

We were pleased to see some of our 2016 entries taking home prizes at the National Farm Sculpture awards last year in New South Wales.

A key attraction this year will be the return of the stunt riders from Factory FMX Motocross who will be leaping over some huge O’Connors tractors and machinery and putting on a great show three times a day.

It is important to recognise the field days sponsors and supporters, regional contractors and suppliers, and most importantly the local community groups, schools, service and sporting clubs who all help bring this major event to life. We thank them for their support and participation.

Field days – a part of Wimmera life F

or anyone growing up in the Wimmera the region’s annual field days have simply been part of life.

As youngsters in Horsham there was always some element of excitement and intrigue surrounding the Wimmera Machinery Field Days, especially for mates who were from farming families.

Happy debates about ‘green’ or ‘red’, depending on your choice of heavy machinery brands, flowed freely, almost as much as questions about what all the fuss was about and where all these people were coming from.

Dust, straw, flies, heat, wind, sun or rain – it didn’t really matter what we were confronted with after entering the gates. From what we could soak up, this event was somehow special and it was ours.

As youngsters we weren’t engaged in the politics or fortunes of the regional farming industry.

What we were more fascinated by were the big, gleaming pieces of brand-new machinery that spread across the site like giants, some complete with fierce metal teeth and others with dramatic limbs, complicated mechanisms and monstrous rubber wheels. Wow! It didn’t matter that we didn’t know what half of them were for – they were simply impressive because of how they looked, and it was with curious and developing minds that we drew our own, at times fantastic, conclusions.

And yes, there was always some son of a farmer or tradesman in the group who had grown up with toy trucks and Meccano sets who was always quick to shoot down our obscure fantasies.

“Are you blokes nuts?” he would ask

of us urban types. “You use that for strippin’, not catchin’ foxes.”

It was a droll response from a future engineering guru that was forever filed away in the memory bank To this day, the ‘giant monsters’ of agriculture remain the most dominant feature of the field days. The difference is that they are even bigger and much more amazing than in the past, posing just as many if not more questions about how they work.

A day off school

For us, getting to the field days was all about a day off school and getting a ride out to the ‘college’ with someone’s dad who was doing something for work or meeting someone important, and then exploring as a group.

Thinking back and when comparing with what’s on offer at the event now, there was relatively little designed to entertain children.

How times are changing

W

immera Machinery Field Days at Longerenong have long been a rural institution, providing the region’s farming community with a critical annual update on the latest machinery and technology.

Some of the mighty machinery used to sow and harvest the crops of today, and on display at Longerenong, are the result of evolutionary engineering that in many cases have humble origins. What patrons at the field days will see during the three-day event have come a long way in a relatively short time.

The Katyil district near Dimboola produced a rare sight late last month when members of the Schilling family took a 1938 T. Robinson and Co harvester out of the shed to strip a 30-bag wheat crop to compare the experience with what the job involved today.

But the experience was all about wandering through the exhibits, soaking up the atmosphere, enjoying childhood company banter, and if possible, getting a hot dog or pie and washing it down with a Murtoa soft drink – Portello was a particular favourite.

But we had to be on our guard.

Heaven forbid if any of us somehow got stuck being minded by an adult farming relative intent on pursuing the long-held field days tradition – catching up with farming mates from the other side of region who they knew through footy, cricket, tennis, farmer meetings, dances, in-laws and so on.

The conversations for ‘trapped’ primary school-aged kids were a nightmare and seemed to go around in circles for an eternity.

Invariably they always came back to something regarding the weather. But for the adults, these get-together chats seemed like revitalising tonics.

In some cases, farming friends of our grandmas and grandads, who us children had dismissed as quiet and boring parts of the family furniture, seemed to suddenly come to life.

Personalities veiled by hours of lonely toil on the land had a chance to surface.

The end of a long day keeping ourselves occupied at the field days would manifest into a background headache, sore legs, and, if we had forgotten a hat, a generous degree of sunburn.

But it was somehow worth it, and while our response to what we had done at Longerenong for all those hours was often a casual ‘nothin’ much’, we had been engaged in healthy rural culture.

The field days remains, as much as anything else, a celebration of culture – at least for some of us who have grown up in the Wimmera.

The exercise, that also involved a 1950 John Deere Model D tractor, also provided the farmers, some of whom had been busy with a heavy crop this season and others who had retired, a chance to reminisce.

The Schillings had a lot of fun using the equipment for the first time since a previous Schilling family farming day in 1997, but were amazed how long it took to complete the job.

Using the technology of yesterday, it took the team about two hours to strip the third of an acre plot, which produced 10 bags of wheat in a crop that was running at 30 bags an acre.

The same stripping project with today’s harvesting technology would have taken two minutes.

While countless examples of farm machinery, products, produce and all things agribusiness shout out from the various outdoor and indoor sites, people can’t help but be drawn to a special part of the event – the Wimmera Machinery Field Days Victorian Farm Sculpture Competition exhibition.

The competition, starting from humble origins, has developed into a full-blown and rich artistic extravaganza, prompting the rural community to delve into the curious and subjective world of art.

Old parts, long-forgotten steel, fencing wire and every other conceivable piece of farmland flotsam and jetsam get twisted, welded, painted, manipulated and moulded into pieces of art that can’t help but attract the attention of field days patrons.

The competition has grown from being an idea and a curiosity to serious business.

The sculpture competition at the field days has become a state title with a first prize of $2500 in an overall prize pool of $6000 up for grabs, thanks to ACE Radio being on board as major sponsor.

Not only that, but annual winners of the Victorian Farm Sculpture Competition have the opportunity to enter their sculpture in National

While the products of practical farm-product engineering glisten under the flutter of promotion business flags nearby, the creations of people exploiting inner artistic whims command just as much attention – such is the cultural mix of the field days.

The Weekly Advertiser and radio stations 3WM and MIXX FM general manager Scott Grambau said ACE Radio was proud to continue its long association in supporting the Victorian Farm Sculpture Competition at the field days.

“The field days is about more than just doing business deals – it’s about people and culture and that is what drives us,” he said.

Field days manager Murray Wil-

son said ACE Radio had been a key supporter since 2006 and it was pleasing to see its long-term association continue and strengthen.

The Victorian Farm Sculpture Competition traditionally draws about 50 entries from across the region and interstate.

This year features expanded categories, providing budding farm-sculpture creators more chances to win prizes.

Fresh food ready to share A

psley’s Cindy Cross’s passion for and talent with fresh produce will be on display at this year’s field days.

Mrs Cross, who owns and operates Amber Ridge Farm Shop Nursery and Café, will host a cooking demonstration in the auditorium on Tuesday.

“I did a talk at the Wimmera field days through a ‘women in agriculture’ lunch hosted by the Commonwealth Bank a few years ago, but this is my first time cooking there,” Mrs Cross said.

“I’ve done lots of cooking demonstrations, mostly Mount Gambier way and at the Lucindale field days.

I’m looking forward to it.”

Mrs Cross’s demonstration will have a ‘grow it, eat it’ theme.

She said she would aim to showcase how to use the best regional produce and how the best produce can come from our ‘own back yards’.

“I always take a big box of fruit and vegetables I’ve picked that day that I have with me on stage,” she said.

“That way it’s easy to tell people about them.

“Because I like to grow heirloom vegetables I have a lot of different varieties. Take tomatoes for example, they’re not just red. I have green ones, yellow ones, stripy ones and little jellybean ones.

“When I’m cooking I like to talk about how it all works. It’s not just about eating food, but how you grow the products to make it and how easy it is.”

Mrs Cross said her demonstrations were usually impromptu.

“Sometimes I’ll walk around the market first and grab some of the ingredients available and make some-

thing from them,” she said. “That’s always exciting because you never know what you’re going to get – it keeps you on your toes.

“I also like to grab someone from the crowd to be my sous chef. I like to interact with the crowd.

“If there’s a character or two in the audience I like to have a bit of fun with them.

“I enjoy a bit of banter.”

Mrs Cross’s demonstration will be the first of two at the field days.

Warracknabeal Creekside Hotel owners Kevin and Sally Gebert will treat patrons to a ‘Creekside Signature Sausages’ session on Thursday.

Mrs Gebert said it would be the couple’s first cooking demonstration.

“We’re really excited,” she said.

“We’re going to be showcasing our hand-made gourmet sausages.

“We do a lot of low and slow barbecue cooking and the sausages are something we’ve developed throughout the past three to four months.

They’re going really well.”

The Creekside Hotel started an American low and slow barbecue battle a couple of years ago, attracting teams from across Australia.

The battles draw a large crowd of Wimmera residents keen to see the teams in action and taste the results.

“Low and slow barbecue cooking is really taking off,” Mrs Gebert said.

“We’re lucky we got in on it early.

It’s been very popular.

“It’s because of the work we’ve done with the competition we’ve been given the opportunity to develop our own sausages and rubs and things to enhance the barbecue and take it to the next level.”

Health groups join forces to spread message

immera health and community organisations are joining forces at the 2017 Wimmera Machinery Field Days to spread the message of better health.

A communal space site will feature an interactive computer hub with demonstrations of My Aged Care and the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Wimmera Primary Care Partnership health promotion worker Ruth Williams encouraged visitors to stop and learn about these services and many others in the region.

“These include volunteering and

community programs. They may even pick up some basic computer skills as well,” she said.

Other highlights will include cooking demonstrations, games, health checks and children’s storytime.

Bright green and yellow shop signs will be on display at each agency site so people can easily find their way through the area.

t is just so tantalising! During exploration of the many displays and offers at the Wimmera Machinery Field Days there comes a time when the lure of self-indulgence becomes too great to ignore.

Yes, you might be there to look at what’s new in hydraulics, consider irrigation systems or perhaps find someone to help grind your way through financial options. Whatever!

But there is always that moment when the great urge arrives to take time to ‘sample’.

Okay, pens down and decision made; where’s the Country Gourmet Pavilion?

Right in the hub of the field days, that’s where, so let’s make a bead to the pavilion and see what we can find that can stimulate the taste buds, warm the soul or allow us to enjoy fruits of good health.

There is always something special about discovering a new type of food or drink product that not only sits well with the palate, but also satisfies a thirst or inner rumble.

immera and Mallee residents keenly awaiting a Nitro Circus Live show in Horsham on Easter Sunday can enjoy an early taste of motocross action at the field days.

Factory FMX will again bring its popular and successful stunt riders to the Longerenong event in 2017.

Field days manager Murray Wilson said patrons would be treated to a

bonus this year, with two professional riders showcasing tandem jumps.

They will also feature the latest midair tricks, leaping distances of more than 20 metres long and almost 10 metres high.

“The motocross stunt riders will be a huge drawcard for our event,” Mr Wilson said. “With the region’s strong connection to motocross and a firstclass track nearby, it is a great fit for the field days.”

Mr Wilson said he was pleased to see O’Connors Farm Machinery on board as a sponsor of the show.

“They will offer Factory FMX stunt riders the chance to leap over some huge tractors and other O’Connors machines, which will be lined up under the jumps area,” he said.

The Factory FMX team will perform daily at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm.

Bird’s-eye view on offer T

he dramatic landscapes of the Wimmera and Mallee have long held an attraction for people in pursuit of wide-open spaces, and that is certainly the case for flying enthusiasts.

The vast horizon extending from the Grampians can be awe-inspiring when given the opportunity of a bird’s eye view, and one of the primary reasons why the region has had the opportunity to host state, national and international gliding championships. People from around the world want to come to the region to see it from the air.

One of the best times to enjoy the experience is during the generally mild changeover from summer to autumn, especially when combined with one of the biggest events on the Wimmera calendar.

Wimmera Machinery Field Days has developed a partnership with Grampians Helicopters to allow patrons to extend their experience to the air.

A view from the air, while amazing in its own right, also provides a rare opportunity for people to gain insight in the scope of the field days and how it has expanded at its Wimmera Events Centre site at Longerenong.

Grampians Helicopters is a growing Stawell-based business

helping spread the word about unique ways of experiencing the Wimmera.

While the business has been swooping into some of the region’s rare and iconic locations for excited passengers, the Wimmera Machinery Field Days did some swooping of its own in encouraging the business to be part of the March event.

Field days manager Murray Wilson said part of the backbone of the field days was the opportunity they provided for new businesses.

“It allows them to exploit major exposure and high-volume business trade over three busy days,” he said.

Grampians Helicopters has cap-

tured the imagination of regional visitors and locals alike, especially with its wine-tour drop-in, fly-out tours of the Grampians.

Grampians Helicopters’ Justine Neofitou said the field days provided the fledgling business with ‘fantastic’ exposure.

“Justin our pilot was born and raised at Warracknabeal and knows the region very well,” she said.

“Our business is not only for the benefit of tourists but also for locals who are looking to do something special and don’t want to travel to Melbourne to get that experience.

“With our joy flights on offer, we can expand on the field days feature activities and add to the

atmosphere by providing something special for people to do.”

Grampians Helicopters will provide five, 10 and 15-minute joy flights during the three days, starting from $60 a person.

Mr Wilson said the offer was an amazing opportunity for patrons to see just how big and impressive the field days site was from the air.

“It will certainly give people the chance for a unique view of the field days site in its entirety.

We expect it to be an exciting and popular feature for the field days this year,” he said.

Grampians Helicopters will operate each day of the event from the east side of the site with a variety of flight offers.

immera Machinery Field Days exhibitors will be in the running to win two major product awards along with site awards at this year’s event.

Manager Murray Wilson said the organising committee prided itself on providing a showcase with a modern, professional image and the latest agriculture machinery and technology.

“To encourage exhibitors to strive for similar ideals, there are several awards on offer during the field days,” he said. “The two main product awards will be judged by a panel of regional primary producers and agribusiness professionals who are committee members of the Wimmera Machinery Field Days.”

Mr Wilson said in many cases, award-winning machines have gone on to become standard pieces of equipment on farms throughout Australia.

Judging criteria for the product awards include the machine’s purpose and suitability; scope of application; construction, durability, appearance and design; ease of maintenance and service; ease of operation, including operator comfort and safety; ease of adjustment; availability of parts; and overall value-for-money.

To be eligible, machinery and agribusiness products are required to be new to the market in the 12 months following last year’s field days.

The exhibitor site awards are judged according to overall showcase and ease of recognition; effort put into the display; quality of the site; and overall participation in the theme and spirit of the field days.

Mr Wilson said it was also important that exhibitor site holders complied with Wimmera Machinery Field Days policy and procedure prior to and during the event.

“Presentations to all winners will be made in the Field Days Square on Wednesday afternoon,” he said.

Student showcase H

orsham College students will showcase a variety of talents at Wimmera Events Centre next week.

Textiles students in years nine, 11 and 12 will display their creative and innovative work during a fashion parade.

Textiles teacher Tina Fitzgerald said students had participated in the field days showcase since 2013.

“It has evolved over time,” she said.

“Initially it involved just the textiles students doing a fashion parade to showcase their work. Last year we started to involve our Vocational and Educational Training – VET – dance students, who complete a course at the college on Wednesdays. We will also have live singing.”

The Horsham College Has Got Talent showcase will be in the field days auditorium at 2pm on all three days of the event.

“It’s a big commitment from the kids,” Ms Fitzgerald said.

She said performing in front of a live audience allowed the students to work on their presentation skills.

“It takes them out of their comfort zones,” she said.

“It’s usually something they’ve never done before, so it’s good experience for them.”

Ms Fitzgerald said she looked forward to seeing the students show off their finished pieces.

“The year nine students have only had five weeks at school so the pres-

“The year 12s will show items made towards the end of last year, by the previous year 12s. This year’s year 12s are busy working on their folios and this is a way to keep the cycle going.”

As part of the parade, students will model costumes from former college productions, including Alice in Won-

derland and Robin Hood. “The Alice in Wonderland costumes are particularly interesting because there are a lot of different characters, such as Tweedledum and Tweedledee and the caterpillar,” Ms Fitzgerald said.

“We might even have some deb dresses on show.”

The college’s VET hospitality students will make afternoon tea to be served during the parades.

“We’ll be showcasing a whole range of what we do at the college, from textiles to dancing to singing, production and hospitality,” Ms Fitzgerald said.

She said she expected this year’s showcase to be well attended.

“We get heaps of people watching, it’s usually very popular,” she said.

“By installing these on the rear of existing tipping body trucks, the user can carry greater loads of seed and fertiliser while using existing equipment,” he said.

Farmers throughout Australia have proved these systems invaluable over the years as a safe and efficient way to fill seeders.

“Lights on the face of the control box indicate which door is operating when it’s in use,” a NSW farmer explained. “By installing V-form divisions in your tipper and running transfer tubes down to your Rota door, you can set up your tipping truck to carry two or three different products.”

Mr Timms said using the remote controlled door system could save time, increase productivity and minimise the risk of accidents.

Mr Webb has used organic soil activation product TM Agricultural, produced by Best Environmental Technologies, across his cropping country for the past four years.

He has noted reduced soil compaction, improved root development and increased soil biology.

Soil moisture retention and better soil structure are high on his priority list.

Year-round groundcover is used to prevent soil erosion and maximise water infiltration.

A decade ago Mr Webb was applying lime and gypsum to the red soils at higher than the recommended rate to lift soil pH to grow dryland lucerne, with a limited response.

“Everyone has told us for years the soil pH is the issue, but we really need to balance the soil microbes to achieve soil health,’’ he said.

Today, he is able to establish lucerne without inoculating the seed.

Through an increased understanding of plant health, Mr Webb has been able to achieve improved grain weight and reduced screenings in cereal crops.

Last harvest, he achieved a yield of 3.2 tonnes/ha in the F1 barley undersown with lucerne.

The barley was sown at 40kg/ha and the lucerne at 2kg/ha on a 30cm row spacing on knife points.

Mr Webb said yield variations in paddocks had reduced from 40 to 10 percent.

“Thirty years ago nobody really cropped this country because it was so hard to work,’’ he said.

“You needed big machinery and might have done 500 to 600 out of 7000 acres (2834ha).

“However, on a 240ha paddock of dryland lucerne we were able to run 1000 older ewes and lambs, with a 104 percent weaning last year.

“We spelled it for three-and-a-half months then weaned 2500 lambs onto it.’’

Mr Webb said the biological applications on black self-mulching soils had triggered better soil structure and plant germination.

The classed up ewes are joined to Merino rams with wether lambs sold to processors at 21-26kg carcass weight, while the balance is joined to Hampshire Down rams to be turned off as suckers at four to five months of age. Set in an average rainfall zone of 450mm, the country ranges from sand hill to red loam, black selfmulching and flood plain soils.

The sheep graze pastures of lucerne, clover, annual ryegrass, wild oats and native grasses. Soils were naturally high in sodium and low in phosphorus.

“Subsurface salt has always been one of our limiting factors – even with a full soil moisture profile, crop growth will be uneven as plant roots hit the salt layer,’’ Mr Webb said.

“Since using the TM, the crop growth has been more even across the paddock.”

The crop rotation comprises two wheat crops followed by barley undersown with lucerne, not inoculated.

During the 1990s, Mr Webb was pushing the system with high inputs on the winter crops.

“I used to go to annual reseller field days, try the recommended fertilizer and chemical rates on the cereals and found we weren’t getting a return on it,’’ he said.

“We switched to direct drilling 26 years ago to reduce fuel and labour costs, and improve the soil health.’’

Mr Webb treated his entire cropping area with TM in 2010.

In one barley paddock, where only half was treated with TM, there was a lift in yield of one tonne per hectare. Satellite NDVI images revealed a clear increase in biomass on that half of the paddock through the growing season.

“Even two years later, we could see a difference in the following lucerne yield on the treated half,’’ Mr Webb said.

Soil tests in a 40ha paddock in 2011 revealed a low pH of 4.3 (calcium chloride), organic carbon of 1.24 percent, moderately low phosphorous of 34mg/kg, low zinc of 0.6mg/kg, and a phosphorus buffering index of 62.5.

After three years of TM application only, the 2014 soil tests revealed pH had increased to 4.5, organic carbon to 1.4 percent, phosphorus to 57mg/kg and an improved phosphorus buffering index of 55.

There was a reduction in exchangeable sodium from 4.8 to 1.3 over the three years. In other cropping paddocks, MAP application rates were reduced from 100kg/ha to 40kg/ha with a TM application.

“We do a summer spray to control woody weeds but no insecticides are sprayed on the lucerne, there is no fungicide on the wheat seed or fertiliser, and no need to spray fungicides for rust,’’ Mr Webb said.

“TM is not the panacea to everything and sprays must be timed correctly – you cannot let other management skills drop off.

“Mulching is important when growing garden vegetables so I apply the same philosophy to the paddocks to retain moisture and improve soil structure.

“Fallowing doesn’t conserve moisture.’’

Mr Webb describes his own philosophy as ‘realistic farming’.

“I’m trying to work with nature and not against it,’’ he said.

“I like to read a lot – not necessarily about farming – but about how things work and why.

“I take a bit out of everything, line them up in my own way and there is always something else out there to find out about – never disregard anything until you have thought it through.’’

Mr Webb is happy with the health of his livestock, marking 109 percent lambs in the merino flock.

“The ewes are flushing up better on the improved lucerne stands,’’ he said.

“The sheep are maintaining a higher body weight.’’

Mr Webb said the ability to tank mix with herbicides made TM applications simple.

He applies it at the recommended rate of 250mls/ha pre-seeding and in-crop.

Mr Webb estimates he is now saving $6000 in fertilizer freight costs alone.

“We have reduced input costs with no loss of yield – we are getting higher protein levels, and maintaining yields at or above district average,” he said.

“We rarely get F2 barley and are achieving APH 1 with our wheat on reduced fertiliser rates, equating to an extra $75/ha in profit.’’

or some of us who have made the annual pilgrimage to the Wimmera Machinery Field Days for most of their working lives, the stories and experiences from the event are many and varied.

What has always been a constant for the three-day event is the opportunity it presents to help someone find that crucial something, whether it be for work or play.

One experience that quickly springs to mind comes from several years ago when a couple of mates caught up, one who had completed his journalistic duties in covering the event, the other

a farmer’s son. While both were simply enjoying a break to have a wander through the Longerenong site, they were also on a mission – one armed with a map and under instruction to find some sort of unique part for a header, the other searching for, of all things, a decent hat.

After initial discussions at the gate, the general consensus was the two assignments wouldn’t take any more than half an hour.

The trouble was, hunting for that machinery part and that elusive hat expanded into a long afternoon across several hours.

Was it because it was hard to find both items? Not at all. In fact, while

the hat, which had to be highly functional but stylish enough to wear to significant events, took a little while to source, the machinery part was secured from a helpful dealer in only a few minutes.

The problem was, there were countless other things that constantly caught the duo’s eye and combined with bumping into people they knew, which always led to great conversations about ‘the world’, time quickly disappeared.

At the end of the day, as site-holders were packing up for the evening and patrons were gradually making their way towards the gate, the pair joked about how many product and

promotional bags they were carrying in each hand.

In one bag there was a bottle of wine tingling against a whiz-bang universal tool and an ingenious water-irrigation timing system.

In another was a codlin-moth trap for a fruit tree, a pack of new-look ‘no-fail’ mouse traps and a selection of fishing lures. And of course there were bags full of countless brochures and information sheets.

But hang on a minute! As the pair wearily reached the car, unlocked the doors and started unloading their collections, there was a dreadful moment of revelation.

he Wimmera Machinery Field Days is renowned for its variety of exhibitors and products and to make the most of a visit to the threeday Longerenong event patrons should spend time in the Moore Exhibition Centre.

The centre has a claim of being the largest exhibition pavilion between Melbourne and Adelaide and exhibitors have taken up all available sites in the building this year.

Schools, banks, health services, volunteer organisations, government support agencies, major-event promotors, insurers, tour operators, employment and training groups, health groups and an eclectic mix of wholesalers and retailers all have a presence in the pavilion.

That’s right, the pair had stopped for a chat with a mate and the one with the hat had removed it to brag about it’s quality – only to then leave it behind.

For the record, the hat was last seen heading south towards Lady Julia Percy Island after being blown off a head into the sea at the Crags near Port Fairy.

immera Machinery Field Days welcomed back its popular fashion parade last year following several years in hiatus.

Clothing and trends will again take centre stage in 2017, with a Formal Fashion Parade on two days.

Field days manager Murray Wilson said he was pleased to see the feature event return, supported by Horsham business Noni B. “The field days catwalk in the auditorium will come alive with the newest trends for the Wimmera,” he said.

“The fashion parade will feature the latest designs available for rural women and the young at heart.”

The parade will be on Tuesday and Thursday at 11.30am.

he partnership between farmers, land managers and government agencies is crucial for a productive and sustainable agricultural industry.

Information on how this partnership works and how farmers can make the most of their circumstances will be available at the Wimmera Machinery Field Days.

Agriculture Victoria has promised a feast of farming, flora and fisheries to be on the menu at the Agriculture Victoria tent at this year’s event from March 7 to 9.

The marquee will also feature Wimmera Catchment Management Authority and Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.

Agriculture Victoria displays will provide information about how agricultural businesses can make the most of their cropping and livestock enterprises.

There will be department staff available to help with any livestock health and welfare issues and also talk about a range of land-health workshops and activities coming up in 2017.

Grain farmers can reap plenty of information from the site, with the climate, soils and nutrients and agronomy among topics on offer.

Members of the department’s Horsham Cereal Pathology team will be available throughout the field days.

Last year’s wet spring has provided its fair share of disease challenges and staff will be on hand to talk about these issues and also hand out the 2017 Cereal and Pulse Disease Guides and updated fact sheets.

Science is also on the agenda, with Australian Grains Genebank showcasing a Get into Grains program, aimed at grade five and six students, along with a display of seeds from around the globe. There will be plenty of interactive games designed to be both fun and informative, helping children learn about seeds, why they are different to each other, and how they can be kept in the freezer forever.

The angling fraternity, which slips in to a niche

position in the agriculture portfolio, will have a chance to get a copy of the new Victorian Recreational Fishing Guide 2017, which outlines recreational fishing gear entitlements and daily catch and size limits for the Wimmera and beyond.

Staff from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning will also be on hand to discuss a range of issues including native vegetation and threatened species. There will also be forest fire management representatives on hand.

Staff from Vicmap Topographic Maps will again display their maps, which can clearly show natural and constructed features on stretches of land. These include contours, rivers, streams, waterfalls, lakes, vegetation, roads, cliffs, localities, park boundaries and shipwrecks.

And if these people are unable to answer questions, DEDJTR’s customer service centre officers will be on site to help. These staff, who work from a call centre in Ballarat, will man a special information desk and will be keen to chat about a range of topics.

Pencils, prizes and photos for kids

The Agriculture Victoria marquee will host a range of activities and features for children young and old during the three days.

Partnering with Wimmera Catchment Management Authority, the site will include a specific children’s area. There will be a ‘selfie’ stand where people of all ages can get their photo taken looking over a farm gate and then have a print made on the spot.

Staff will again provide plenty of material to do colouring in, with budding artists able to submit their work for a competition to win a book voucher prize.

The Get into Grains site will provide a chance to match grains with foods and also learn about some of the 150-million seeds kept at Australian Grains Genebank in Horsham.

Secondary students will be able to find answers to a series of questions relating to the site and be in the running for another $50 book voucher prize. People, of all ages are encouraged to join in the fun at Agriculture Victoria, Site D1-4.

Field days a time for reflection T

he Wimmera Machinery Field Days provides the farming community with an occasion to reflect on the season that has been, and critically, the season that lays ahead.

This year when the rural community walks through the gates at Wimmera Events Centre at Longerenong it will also be considering how much of an impact a release of a new strain of calicivirus will have on rabbits in the region.

The national release of RHDV1 K5, a variant of a virus already established and widespread across Australia, is happening today, and represents yet another milestone in the country’s never-ending war against the virulent pest.

As part of the nationally co-ordinated release, landowners working with Agriculture Victoria will release RHDV1 K5 at 150 sites across Victoria.

Pest rabbits are Australia’s most destructive agricultural pest animal, costing $200-million in lost agricultural production every year, with a further $6-million spent on rabbit-control measures.

Pest rabbits also impact the environment.

A Threat Abatement Plan released by the Federal Government’s Department of Environment and Energy in January found pest rabbits were a significant threat to biodiversity, affecting 304 nationally threatened plant and animal species.

Pest rabbits are not only a regional issue, with the pests showing up in many urban environments such as sports grounds, gardens, along easements, urbanised riparian areas and urban remnant bushland areas. While farmers and environmentalists applaud the release of the deadly new virus strain, Victoria’s acting chief veterinary officer Dr Cameron Bell has reminded commercial rabbit farmers and pet rabbit owners to make sure their animals are vaccinated against the disease.

Dr Bell said the current calicivirus vaccine administered by vets was expected to provide protection of commercial and pet rabbits against all strains of calicivirus.

The original release of calicivirus in 1995 had a significant impact on Australia’s wild rabbit population.

Scientists expect results from today’s release to be less dramatic and be simply part of an overall management strategy for the pest.

Poly tanks can be repaired

W

hat happens when your poly water tank or plastic tractor fuel tank develops a leak? You get it poly welded. Yes, poly can be successfully welded.

With eight years’ experience repairing a wide range of plastic and particularly poly products, Plastic Fusion Service owners Rob Binns and Judy Gardner said they could usually help.

Mr Binns said in the ‘good old days’ the farm workshop could tackle most repair tasks, welding broken steel or even aluminium items.

“At worst it had to be taken to the local engineer,” he said.

“While poly can be very successfully welded, the welding equipment is expensive and specialised.

“It is therefore not practical to own the equipment and you’re unlikely to find a ‘local’ engineer with the skills or equipment. That’s where we can help.”

The specialist poly repairers are based in Horsham and travel across Victoria and South Australia with their work.

“Look around any farm these days and you will see plastic everywhere. There are the obvious items like poly water tanks, tractor fuel and diesel transport tanks and boomspray tanks. Look further and there is hardly a new piece of equipment built in the past few years that doesn’t have at least some plastic components,” Mr Binns said.

“So it is likely at some time you are going to be needing a plastic repair done.”

“Incorrect poly repair techniques can damage the plastic beyond repair,” Mr Binns said.

With its extensive experience in repairing poly tanks, the business sees the same problems occurring over and over.

“Poor foundations and the way the tank is plumbed is the most common cause of failures,” Mr Binns said.

“We will identify any problems and suggest ways of avoiding further issues.

“There is a common misconception that because the tanks are plastic they will bend and conform to irregular surfaces.

“This is incorrect. Poly tanks need a smooth well-compacted level foundation that extends past the edge of the tank.

No-till farmer to visit

T

he country’s future agricultural innovators will be among people to hear from a world renowned soil farmer when Rick Bieber from South Dakota includes Longerenong College in his Australian tour.

Victorian No-Till Farmers Association, Wimmera Catchment Management Authority and Longerenong College have joined forces to bring Mr Bieber to the Wimmera on March 15 as part of his tour of South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales.

The free event, Soil Sessions with Rick Bieber, is open to college students, farmers, scientists and the broader community.

It starts in the college auditorium at 9.30am.

Vic No-Till executive officer Kerry Grigg said the event would provide an opportunity for people to hear from one of the world’s leading no-till farmers who has spoken around the world about soils and enterprise profitability.

“Rick is no stranger to Australia, Australian soils and our growing conditions,” she said.

“He has been visiting farms in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia since 2008 and speaks regularly with growers who want to reduce input costs, improve profitability and improve the health of their farm business. He has forged a reputation for inspiring growers to trust their own judgement, trust their soils and have faith that their soils will look after them, in terms of production and profitability.”

“Whether you produce beef, milk, wool, vegetables or grains, it all stems from good soil health.

“You’ll go home not only inspired to implement change but you’ll also have the ABCs of where to start.”

Customer portal promo G WMWater has invited Wimmera Machinery Field Days patrons to call in and see its team in the Alan Heard Pavilion.

The business will have staff available to answer questions and provide information on several issues, including a new customer portal.

GWMWater communications officer Colleen Eagle said the new online service had already received great feedback.

“The customer portal can help land owners detect on-farm leaks and they will receive alerts for low water consumption in stock areas,” she said.

Ms Eagle said rural customers connected to the Wimmera or northern Mallee pipelines should bring their latest GWMWater bill to the site, where staff will help customers register for the customer portal on the spot.

The Essential Services Commission Water Price Review is another point of interest and GWMWater is asking for feedback on a range of issues over the coming months. Opinions will help GWMWater develop its 2018-23 Water Price Review submission.

The organisation has started feasibility studies into possible projects to drought proof the region, particularly in the west Wimmera and east Grampians areas.

“If you want to know more about these projects or what is happening in your area, come in and chat to one of our knowledgeable team,” Ms Eagle said.

“The field days provides a great opportunity for us to hear about the issues that are important to you. And of course, there is always the opportunity to participate in one of our water games to win a water-wise prize.”

Lifestyle opportunities

ne of the objectives for the committee running the Wimmera Machinery Field Days is to continue to develop the three-day event as familyfriendly.

Part of this direction has been the establishment of a Country Lifestyle Square in the heart of Wimmera Events Centre.

The lifestyle centre features an eclectic mix of site-holders providing everything from a unique shopping experience to interac-

tive product demonstrations and bargains. Of course, the Country Lifestyle Marquee is nearby, where site-holders offer a vast array of products and wares.

Don’t forget fun for the kids at the lifestyle square and Family and Kids Marquee. Youngsters can experience animals up close, ride a field days train and participate in arts, crafts and games.

The field days auditorium will also feature Dreamworks Trolls and a musical concert from the Mik Maks on the Wednesday.

immera-Mallee business O’Connors Farm Machinery has won a Dealer of the Year title at a Case IH ceremony at Uluru in central Australia.

Established at Birchip in 1964, the family-owned business now includes branches at Warracknabeal, Horsham and Shepparton in Victoria, plus Corowa, New South Wales and Bordertown in South Australia.

Employing a staff of more than 140, O’Connors won a category for dealers with three or more branches.

O’Connors’ dealer principal Mark O’Connor said the busi-

ness won a category where all of the finalists would be worthy winners.

“We’re very pleased with the result. O’Connors strives to develop best practice by putting people and teams in place to promote the Case IH brand because we believe in it,” he said.

O’Connors also won an award for Case IH Parts and Service Dealer of the Year for its demonstration of excellent parts sales results, which can be attributed to good communication between their parts, service and machinery sales departments.
