MATCH PREVIEW

BRONCOS

TROY DODDS @troydodds

T

he Panthers looked like world beaters for the first 20 minutes of the second half against Parramatta last Sunday. After an atrocious first half, Penrith turned a 12 point deficit into a four point lead through tries to Tyrone Peachey (43rd minute), Bryce Cartwright (48th minute) and Josh Mansour (54th minute), proving that when things click, it’s almost impossible to stop the Panthers’ momentum. It’s been a regular pattern in Penrith games all season – superb 20 or 30 minute periods, but an inability to play for the full 80 minutes. One game where that was glaringly evident was against this week’s opponent, Brisbane, back in round three. The Broncos were cruising at half-time, but

the Panthers forced their way back into the contest with a sensational second half and like last Sunday’s game, kept their opponents scoreless in the second period to secure a memorable victory. Both the Broncos and Panthers would have learned a lot from that early season encounter. Brisbane know they can’t take Penrith lightly while the Panthers know that despite the enormity of the task at hand, this is a team they can and have beaten. Anthony Griffin returns to Suncorp Stadium for the first time since his departure from the Broncos and while he’ll want little attention surrounding that heading into Friday night’s game, there’s no doubt that it adds just a little bit of spice. Griffin also knows better than anyone the fortress that Suncorp presents and the huge task facing his young Panthers. In a perfect world, Griffin would simply tell his team to hold the ball more, complete their sets and grind out a win. But crushing the enthusiasm and youthful

exuberance of his side would most likely do more harm than good against a team like Brisbane, especially considering some of the side’s best moments come from second phase, broken football. The key is not to ask the team to be more calm with the football, but to be smarter with it. The little things – like conceding a scrum penalty or not expecting to receive a pass that was always coming – need to be improved to give the side any chance against a Brisbane outfit that roared back into form against South Sydney last week. Beating Brisbane will require the offloads, the second phase play and the free flowing football that has been both kind and cruel to the Panthers in equal portions this season. Against a team like the Broncos, all Penrith can do is throw caution to the wind, play some open footy and be a little more controlled in their mindset. The Panthers too often look like they don’t know how to control games when they get in front. If by some chance the

side does lead Brisbane at any stage on Friday night, cool heads must prevail and experienced campaigners like Moylan, Peter Wallace and Trent Merrin will need to step up and control the contest. I’m tipping with the head, not the heart, this week. I think the Broncos offer too much experience and control not to win at home, but I think the Panthers will give this one a hell of a shake. Tip: Broncos by 4.

PANTHER RUMBLINGS with the Masked Panther

CREDIT TO COREY » Nobody can deny that Corey Norman

(pictured) has a lot of soul searching to do to get his life back on track, but despite a controversial week he was happy to stop and chat with fans and pose for photographs at Pepper Stadium last Sunday. Rather than hide away from the scandals surrounding him, the Eels star fronted up to the game against the Panthers as a spectator and was more than happy to mix with fans afterwards.

» Panthers forward Jeremy Latimore

CEO Corey Payne is a man of the people. I spotted him talking to a disgruntled fan inside Pepper Stadium last Sunday, who was extremely concerned about the poor quality and condition of food sold from a particular vendor at a previous home game. Payne was quite obviously taking the issue seriously and promised the fan he’d follow up on the issue.

» If Ivan Cleary thought coaching the

Panthers gave him a headache, imagine trying to work out the intricacies of The Bunker. Cleary has been consulting with the NRL on a range of issues lately, including some of the problems the new technology has faced during its first season.

has recently completed his Bachelor of Business and took part in a graduation ceremony at the University of Wollongong (UOW) on Wednesday. Latimore commenced his studies in 2012 as part of the UOW Graduates of League program. At the time he was playing for the St George-Illawarra Dragons. Despite moving to the Panthers the following season, the 29-year-old remained committed to his studies and regularly commuted to Wollongong to attend classes until he completed his final exams last month.

» Popular forward Leilani Latu has

extended his deal with the club until the end of 2020. Meanwhile, the 23-year-old was charged with tripping by the NRL Match Review Committee following Sunday’s game against the Eels. The offence was so minor that Latu won’t miss any games. He took an early guilty plea.

» While Penrith coach Anthony Griffin

remained relatively calm in the sheds at half-time after an awful first half performance against the Eels, I’m told he wasn’t so kind after the game. Griffin delivered a first class spray to the squad about the performance, clearly aiming to get their heads in the right gear for Friday night’s game against Brisbane.

» Meanwhile, the brains trust of the

» There’s no doubt that new Panthers

Panthers met with the first grade squad at training on Tuesday. Anthony Griffin along with Phil Gould and Greg Alexander met with the squad behind closed doors, with a planned media session delayed as the gathering continued.

» Channel Seven has secured the rights

to broadcast next year’s Rugby League World Cup. Without the rights for any other rugby league matches, it’ll be interesting to see what sort of commentary team Seven assembles for the tournament, which will be played across Australia and New Zealand.

» Penrith’s game against Parramatta was

the most watched program on Fox Sports on Sunday, attracting 215,000 viewers despite Channel Nine also showing the game. Nine’s free-to-air broadcast attracted an average of 319,000 viewers.

» A number of Penrith business people,

including Western Weekender Editor Troy Dodds, will be pushing themselves around the Sydney International Regatta Centre in a wheelchair next Friday, July 29 in an effort to raise funds and awareness of wheelchair rugby league and the Men of League. Wheelchair athlete Nathan Pentecost will be doing the bulk of the work, attempting to push himself around the Olympic venue for 100 kilometres. You can donate to the cause here: https://give.everydayhero.com/au/ pentecost-s-men-of-league-pushathon.

» First it was a mysterious black cat, now a couple of llamas have randomly shown up at Panthers training. Two llamas

watched on intently as the Panthers trained at the Rugby League Academy on Tuesday morning. We hear there’s no truth to the rumour that the Board is considering opening a zoo on the club’s land.

» Prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard is

expected to miss the next few weeks of footy after injuring his elbow against the Eels last weekend.

» Also on the injury list is utility Will

Smith, who was hurt in the opening minutes of Penrith’s reserve grade clash with the Cutters last weekend. The extent of Smith’s injury is still to be determined but I spotted him in a knee brace at training on Tuesday.

P

anthers utility Tyrone Peachey says he was happy to return to first grade last Sunday after being dropped the week prior for disciplinary reasons. The 24-year-old was left out of Anthony Griffin’s side for Penrith’s match against his former club, Cronulla, after failing to show up to a training session on time. Peachey was forced to play in reserve grade that weekend before being recalled last Sunday against Parramatta. Peachey, who played his 50th NRL game for Penrith last weekend, was on fire in the four-point win – scoring a try and assisting in numerous others. “It was good to be back in the team… it

was tough watching last week against the Sharks, which would’ve been my 50th game for the club,” he told Extra Time. “It was good to come back against Parra though and beat them. It really meant a lot being my 50th.” However, last Sunday’s Battle of the West victory almost turned pear-shaped for Peachey and his teammates after the embattled Eels got off to red-hot start to lead 18-6 at half-time. Fortunately for the monster home crowd at Pepper Stadium, the Panthers were able to string together a few tries in the second half to edge in front and ultimately win. Peachey admitted he’s starting to get frustrated with Penrith’s lack of discipline and inability to play for the full 80 minutes. “We try and play 80 every week but we have too many little errors and we let teams get ahead in the first half,” he said. “I think it’s a concentration thing… we

don’t concentrate enough. Hopefully we do learn soon because I’m sick of fricken’ going in at half-time losing.” Following Penrith’s narrow win, coach Griffin delivered a classic full-time spray which Peachey said was needed. “I think we all needed it,” he said. “We were happy to win but we weren’t happy with how we all played.”

ust a few short years ago, up and coming Kiwi forward Sitaleki Akauola almost gave up on his dream of playing first grade rugby league. But after receiving a lifeline from the Wests Tigers in 2011, the now-Panther hasn’t looked back. Akauola began his footy career as a promising junior with the New Zealand Warriors before deciding to leave the game – and his family back home – to work a ‘normal’ job with his older brother in Australia. Akauola loaded and unloaded pallets for international shipping company TNT – an honest living for a kid trying to earn money for his family of 14 siblings. But after three weeks of heavy lifting, Akauola received a call that would reignite his passion for the game he loved and missed dearly.

Photo: Megan Dunn

Akauola was asked to trial for the Wests Tigers and after impressing club bosses, he earned himself a contract with their powerhouse Holden Cup team. Akauola spent four seasons at the joint venture – wining an NYC premiership in 2012 before making his first grade debut a season later. After struggling to make first grade in 2015, Akauola decided to leave the club that saved his career and join the Penrith Panthers on a one-year deal. The 24-year-old said he owes Panthers coach Anthony Griffin for showing him the faith he didn’t think he had in himself. “I actually believe in myself again and I no longer drop my head after I do something wrong,” Akauola said. “Hook’s been a big part of my development and the boys have been very supportive too.” Akauola has played five games for Penrith and played a starring role against the Eels last Sunday. “I’m just trying to build my confidence and I really thank Hook for giving me the opportunity,” he said. “He gave me a few runs earlier this month and I let him down, I was glad to do the job on Sunday night.”

Mr Chops came into the shelter as a stray and was never collected by his owners. Who knows why, he’s such a sweet and friendly boy. Mr Chops is 8 years old but you wouldn’t know it from his behaviour, he loves a belly rub and a chat all with a smile on his face. If Mr Chops is the dog for you please come by and meet him.

Even though he isn’t showing it here this hunk has a great smile, he loves treats, will sit when asked and waits to be handed his treat. A happy boy that was very sweet when meeting him, he is available for adoption now so please come and meet him.

Bell has been surrendered by her owners and sadly she has not settled in well. When meeting Bell she was scared and while was very eager to get treats she did not like it when I lifted my arm to throw her one. At 8 months of age this girl should be bouncing, happy and loving life. Is there a family out there that can make that happen?

THE DREW REVIEW

PAYNE’S POINT with Panthers CEO Corey Payne

with Brad Drew

THE WEST MISSES OUT

EELS KEEP TURNING UP

On behalf of the Panthers, I sincerely apologise to all rugby league fans living in western Sydney. I was born and bred in western Sydney and have been involved with rugby league my entire life. My decision to join the Panthers in May of this year was largely driven by my understanding of western Sydney and rugby league. So why am I apologising? Western Sydney has been overlooked to host any 2017 Rugby League World Cup matches! I am extremely disappointed that we have been snubbed by the NRL for ‘commercial reasons’. It doesn’t make any sense to me that the only two RLWC games scheduled for Sydney (Australia v Lebanon and England v Lebanon) will not be played in our backyard. It is a mind-boggling decision which makes me question the NRL’s strategic

agenda for Australia’s fastest growing economy and population. Our backyard is the growth engine of Australia, a burgeoning infrastructure capital and home to the third largest economy in the country. The region is a showpiece for multiculturalism in Australia. Just so you know, we offered to host a RLWC ball, after-match functions, and organise junior league gala days and school visits at our expense. We also offered Pepper Stadium at cost. It is a real shame that the NRL cannot see the opportunity out here in the west. If they cannot make RLWC games commercially viable in western Sydney then I must be living on the moon. All we wanted to do is bring rugby league, business and the community together in western Sydney to celebrate the World Cup. Western Sydney deserves better. Corey Payne – Panther #33102

As the weeks have rolled on since the Parramatta Eels were told they would be stripped of competition points for 2016, the situation seems to be just that little bit more dire each time you pick up a newspaper or hear a news report. Apart from having to offload players, including the very influential Nathan Peats and Junior Paulo, Kieran Foran has requested a release from his contract to deal with personal issues, Corey Norman faces an uncertain future after his court appearance last week and other issues being raised in the media, while just this week the government has stepped in to sack the Board. One highlight for the poor fans is the possible return of Jarryd Hayne to the club, but is he the person to get the club out of their current plight? Coach Brad Arthur deserves a gold medal or two for the manner in which he has dealt with every adverse situation the club has faced this season.

He has done an exceptional job in fielding a team every week, that is ready to play for not only their own pride, but most importantly for the fans, who at times this season must have wondered if things could get any worse. This pride in the Parra jersey was evident for all to see at Pepper Stadium last Sunday afternoon, and Parra certainly came out of the blocks firing and quickly had 14 points on the board, with Michael Jennings looking as though he was going to be a real headache for Penrith. A hamstring injury to Michael Jennings in the first half proved to be a blessing for Penrith, but a real blow for the Parra fans eager to have some good news at the end of another tough week for the club. The young Penrith team were able to capitalise on Jennings’ injury and Michael Gordon’s three missed conversions, to come away with the win. Anthony Griffin will be hoping for a more consistent performance this week.

Penrith Panthers still remain in the top eight despite another tight loss, this time at the hands of the Illawarra Cutters 22-18 last weekend at Pepper Stadium. The game didn’t get off to the best of starts for Penrith, who lost captain Will Smith in the opening minute with a knee injury. The visitors opened the scoring in the sixth minute before backing it up with a second try 20 minutes later. The Panthers were finally able to get on the board moments later through Zach Dockar-Clay before Malakai WateneZelezniak scored not long after to put Penrith in front. Josh Hall kicked a penalty goal before half-time to put Penrith in front 14-10 at the break. When play resumed in the second half, it was the Cutters who edged back into the lead with two quick tries. The Panthers tried to make a game of it after a George Jennings try with 10 to go, but it wasn’t to be. This weekend Penrith will enjoy a wellearned bye before returning in Round 21 against the Newtown Jets.

have extended their unbeaten run to 15 games after a 24-16 win over the Parramatta Eels last Sunday afternoon. The Eels opened the scoring after 11 minutes but it was the Panthers who led at half-time 14-6. Parramatta got off to a sensational start

in the second half, with two quick tries to take the lead. However, Penrith were determined to keep their unbeaten streak alive and took control of the final 20 minutes to come back and seal victory. Try scorers for the Panthers included: Jack Hetherington (2), Ratu Tuisese (2) and Reed Izzard. Penrith battle Brisbane this Friday night.

Because no animal should know violence. From live export to factory farming; in puppy factories and in slaughterhouses... Through the eyes of our investigators we have seen the very worst of what humans are capable of. But we have also seen the very best. Every day the generosity of our supporters humbles and inspires us. Every dollar gifted to Animals Australia helps us investigate, expose and fight cruelty to animals… in Australia and beyond. Your support will help us create a kinder world.
