Local residents head to the polls
Class of 2012 bids farewell – for now
Local community halls, schools and churches will be buzzing with activity on Saturday, as Penrith locals head to the polls again. The Council Election on Saturday, September 10 should be the last time Penrith residents need to vote for any more politicians until 2019. Locals will vote for Councillors to represent them in the ward they live in. In the Penrith Local Government Area (LGA) there’s three wards – East, South and North. There are between 16 and 20 polling locations in each ward, similar to the locations of July’s Federal Election. Polling places will be open from 8am to 6pm on Saturday and the majority are assisted wheelchair accessible. If you won’t be around on Saturday, there is still a chance to vote today (Friday) at either one of the two pre-poll locations in the Penrith LGA. In the east of the LGA there is St Marys Memorial Hall, on the corner of Great Western Highway and Mamre Road, St Marys, or in the west you can vote at 205 to 209 High Street, Penrith in the old Blockbuster Video site. The pre-poll locations are open from 8.30am to 6pm, and postal voting options are also available for anyone out of their ward on polling day. A list of polling places can be found online at www.westernweekender.com. au, along with a link to Penrith Council’s interactive map.
Council holds last meeting ahead of Saturday’s Local Government Election DALE DRINKWATER
G
oodbyes are notorious for being difficult, but when you’re saying farewell to 21 years of service like Councillor Jackie Greenow did on Monday night, it’s completely acceptable to get choked up. Monday night saw the very last meeting of Penrith Council’s class of 2012, where Councillors who laughed with each other – and quite often argued – said their goodbyes. Councillors Greenow, Prue Car and Ben Goldfinch are hanging up their boots, with other Councillors facing the real possibility they won’t be back for another four years after Saturday’s Local Government Election. Probably for the first time this Council term, not a single Councillor had a bad word to say about another in the public meeting. Cr Greenow wiped away tears before thanking fellow Councillors, promising she will continue to be there for them. “To the people in East Ward who voted for me and helped me, I say thank you very much,” she said. Cr Goldfinch delivered a shaky goodbye, but lightened the mood when he handed Councillor Michelle Tormey a present for
Saying goodbye to Council: Jackie Greenow, Ben Goldfinch and Prue Car all of her advocacy to ensure clean and working toilets. “There’s been a time when toilet seats were missing, so I brought her a present – a toilet seat,” he said. Councillor John Thain described Cr Car as “his mate and his confidante”, and said he has never seen anyone work so hard in Council and as a State Member. Cr Car returned the gesture, and said she wouldn’t be where she is without Cr Thain. “He is the calm voice on the end of the phone, and the wise steer,” she said.
“Words can’t express how grateful I am.” However, Cr Car won’t be resting on her laurels after a comment from her fellow Councillor and former State Election competitor, Bernard Bratusa. “Prue, congratulations on Londonderry – see you in 2019,” he said. It wasn’t all an emotional rollercoaster, as Mayor Karen McKeown looked back on Council’s achievements. Council also thanked its three recent Mayors – Mark Davies (2012), Ross Fowler (2013-15) and Cr McKeown (2015-16).

Why we’re transport’s biggest losers

New changes mean you’re paying $336 more to get to work on a train DALE DRINKWATER

IT now costs $6.46 for a peak-hour train from either Emu Plains or Penrith to Town Hall, which is $51.68 after eight trips over four days, generally used between Monday to Thursday. On Friday, a daily commuter will now have to pay half of their normal fares, instead of travelling for free as previously allowed. Now a western Sydney commuter’s five-day fare totals $58.14 per week, $6.46 more than when Friday trips were free, and $336 more over 52 weeks. The Opal fare freeze is cold comfort to such commuters.
How you may not benefit from multi-mode transfer discounts: UNDER new changes, an adult who catches a bus to the train station will benefit from a $2 ‘transfer discount’, or a $1 discount for concession card holders. Previously, a six kilometre bus trip from Glenmore Parkway to Penrith station would cost $3.50, on top of the $6.46 fare from Penrith Station to Town Hall – totalling $9.96 one way. While the new fare is $2 cheaper per fare at $7.96, both fares would have been limited to a $60 weekly fare cap anyway, producing no added benefit to Penrith’s daily multi-mode long-haul commuters.

t’s happened – western Sydney commuters have been slugged higher prices for their public transport, to save money for multi-mode commuters. Transport for NSW has now scrapped free travel after eight trips, and has created discounts for commuters who switch between trains, buses, ferries and light rail. Changes were recommended by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal, and while discounts produce real benefits for those travelling on several smaller trips, they do little for Penrith commuters on the long haul. Transport Minister Andrew Constance said scrapping free travel after eight trips will ‘re-balance’ to half price fares, resulting in daily Penrith to Sydney commuters paying more. “This still provides an incentive to catch public transport while ensuring we recoup some of the costs of providing extra services,” he said. However, the transfer discount on multi-mode travel could possibly alleviate some of Penrith’s station parking woes, as Mr Constance said people will be encouraged to catch public transport all the way and leave the car at home.

He added that Opal fares will remain frozen until July 2017, which means fares wouldn’t have increased on buses and light rail since January 2014 and on trains and ferries since January 2015. But locals aren’t so sure, according to one who approached the Weekender on Monday about an increase in bus fares. “The fare increased and it was not

mphetamine use and retail store thefts are increasing in the Penrith area but robbery and malicious damage offences are significantly down, according to the latest statistics. The Bureau of Crime and Statistics Research (BOCSAR) has released its latest figures, which show positive signs in a number of categories within the Penrith Local Government Area (LGA). From July 2015 to June 2016, ‘steal from motor vehicle’ was down 22.1 per cent compared to the same period from the previous financial year. Not every result was great with the ‘use or possession of amphetamines’ increasing by 26.3 per cent and ‘stealing from a retail store’ also up 19.2 per cent. Acting Crime Manager at St Marys Police Station, Detective Acting Inspector Grant Gilbert, told the Weekender police are doing what they do best. “In my opinion police are doing their best to drive down crime and it is clearly having a positive effect in some areas,” he said. “I believe the decrease in robbery with a weapon can be attributed to the increased security measures by companies, the prevalence of CCTV cameras and the incarceration of offenders who would, if
still out, be committing further offences – the days of bank robberies are pretty much phased out due to security.” BOCSAR recorded most offences as stable for the Penrith LGA. However, five offences recorded an upward trend, while four offences recorded a downward trend over the 24 month period leading to June 2016. Acting Crime Manager at Penrith Police Station, Detective Acting Inspector Doug Allen, told the Weekender he thought some of the results were great. “When it comes to robbery with a weapon decreasing, it’s obviously a number of contributing factors but I think it could also relate to the level of high visibility policing we have going on – it’s a great result,” he said. “The increase in stealing from a retail store is largely determined by a number of factors including increased reporting of the incidents. “However, increased reporting of the incidents leads to a greater chance of apprehension of the offender and when we end up with offenders before court, it’s always a good result.” State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, praised the work of local police. “These results are a testament to our local police who work tirelessly across our community to ensure they detect and prevent crime,” he said.

he Olympics may be over but the backflipping is still happening at Transport for NSW. As reported by the Weekender last month, the parking area and pick-up/ drop-off point on Jane Street near Penrith Station was replaced with a taxi zone with no replacement parking provided for local commuters. It created outrage on social media and prompted a front page story in the Weekender, which received a huge response. Now, Transport for NSW has caved in to public pressure and announced that the area outside Penrith Station will have

eight spaces converted into an interim 15 minute parking area for commuters, with the remaining spaces left for taxis. Penrith Mayor, Karen McKeown, told the Weekender the situation could have been avoided. “It’s a huge win for the community and more or less a common sense outcome for it to be converted to a shared space,” she said. A Transport for NSW spokesperson said the backlash from community members led to the change. “Transport for NSW has thoroughly considered this feedback and the impact on all of the stakeholders using the interchange,” the spokesperson said. The changes are now in operation.

“I saw how religion was damaging people’s lives” DALE DRINKWATER
t wasn’t a snap decision that led Iranian-born and raised Amin* to desert his faith in religion, and pursue antitheism. During his life growing up in southern Iran then studying in the north in the city of Tehran, Amin said he experienced things he could not evade. “I saw how religion was damaging people’s lives. There was torturing I saw with my own eyes, those things affected me a lot. You see people getting tortured for no reason, but religion believes it’s a reason,” he told the Weekender. The Weekender spoke with Amin after a member of the public identified disappointment over omitting Islam in a previous story (‘People selecting ‘no religion’ is growing’), published in August. Amin told of how his life now as an atheist mortgage broker in western Sydney is vastly different to growing up studying Islam and the Quran as a teen in the Middle East. “I was born in a practicing Muslim Shiite family, and some of my relatives are mullahs, who study and preach Islamic religion,” he said. “I accepted what they were saying but
I
thought, ‘I have to prove it for myself in my life that this is true’.” Amin moved to the city of Tehran to study art at university, where he said he realised the difference a big city makes in shaping people’s views. He then attended a compulsory twoyears of military service, before serving in the police force overseeing cases in IT. Amin said it was his work with the force while he was still living in Iran that sealed the deal for his move to antitheism. “People were being fined for wearing nail polish, $5 per nail,” he said. “I realised religion is not something that you keep for yourself, it was something that the government was using as a tool, and I’m against this tool.” He said he believes religion and the desire to be human are in conflict with each other. “Humans are the ones who are asking why [about religion], even a small kid. It’s just human nature,” he said. “Religion doesn’t like that because they want to brainwash you so you act in a certain way. Basically, I look at religion in a way that they are just creating slaves for themselves.” Amin’s views are his only and do not represent any religion as a whole. * Surname withheld.

NEED A SCISSOR LIFT?
Skin cancer survivor Tom Bourne is pushing the sun safety message JADE ALIPRANDI
ocal residents are being urged to ‘Think UV’ after the Cancer Council’s National Sun Survey revealed more than a third of NSW adults are still confused about what causes sunburn. Cancer Council NSW is asking Penrith residents to be sun smart as the weather heats up with the arrival of spring last week. UV radiation is an invisible form of energy produced by the sun, which also emits visible light and infrared radiation, or heat. It can reach our skin directly, or be reflected off of other surfaces, such as water, sand, snow and concrete. NSW’s Greater Western Sydney Community Engagement Manager, Aruni Ratnayake, highlighted the importance of thinking about UV radiation. “UV radiation is an invisible danger because it’s not like the sun’s warmth, which we feel, or the sun’s light, which we can see,” Ms Ratnayake said. The Sun Survey found 35 per cent of
L
adults didn’t realise that UV radiation is the only cause of sunburn, mistakenly claiming temperature (21 per cent), and cloud cover, wind or humidity (14 per cent) as useful measures of sunburn risk. Four per cent couldn’t say. Skin cancer survivor and former volunteer at Nepean Hospital Cancer Council Information Centre, Tom Bourne, told the Weekender it’s important to be sun safe at all times. “I can’t believe that in this day and age that people are still roaming out in the sun totally unprotected with no hat, no shirt and no sunscreen, particularly on the beach,” he said. “After my diagnosis 20-odd years ago, I never go out in the sun without sunscreen and a hat and I have to get quarterly checkups at the dermatologist’s office – it seems for some the message hasn’t quite stuck.” Ms Ratnayake’s key message is to slip, slop, slap. “Most skin cancers can be prevented and we know how to do it – slip on clothing, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shade and slide on sunglasses,” she said.

Woman to learn fate over child exploitation charges
A former Nepean Hospital health worker will learn her fate later this month after pleading guilty to child exploitation. Anne Eileen Zarb, 45, appeared before Penrith District Court last Friday charged with conspiracy to commit sexual intercourse with a fictitious female who was represented to be under the age of 10. The mother-of-four and her lover, William Gerard Buenen, were collared on November 5, 2015 following a sting outside McDonald’s Penrith, unaware they were going there to meet sex crimes detectives who had been monitoring them since June. They were among five to be arrested for a spate of disturbing offences, with Zarb and Buenen, a reported Emu Plains’ tattooist, also accused of bestiality. Wearing civilian clothes with her long hair styled half-up, half-down, Zarb, who has been in custody since her arrest, took the stand to give oral evidence. The court heard Zarb had previously told police she thought Buenen was living in a “fantasy world”. She said a “small part” of her didn’t think he would go through with the act. However, under cross examination, the defendant admitted she knew Buenen was a person who had a sexual interest in children and was “most certainly prepared” to act on sexual fantasies if given the opportunity. The defence tried and failed to initiate a non-publication order, citing embarrassment and distress to relatives of the parties, prompting the Crown prosecutor to ask what consideration she had given to the child. “I didn’t give any consideration,” Zarb responded quietly. Judge Mark Buscombe branded it a “very troubling case”. “To lose her moral compass to such an extent is very hard to understand,” he said. “If this wasn’t an undercover operation,
a nine-year-old would have been abused.” Zarb’s lawyer submitted his client was “vulnerable” at the time of her offending and was seeking Buenen’s “approval and acceptance”. He said this, coupled with a medical diagnosis of post traumatic stress disorder stemming from the 2013 Blue Mountains bush fires where Zarb lost her home and everything except the clothes on her back, led her to be influenced by Buenan, which ultimately resulted in her “inability to draw the line between right and wrong”. Zarb, who has offered to give evidence against Buenen and a second co-offender, Darren John McCarthy, told the court she felt full of “self hate” and helplessness at the time of her offending and her coaccused raised her spirits. “He always made me feel good,” she said. “Always told me how good I was.” Her judgement will be handed down on September 30.
14 months jail for man caught up in cannabis plantations
A “crop sitter” implicated in the cultivation of two elaborate cannabis plantations in Colyton and St Marys will spend the next 14 months behind bars. Supported by about a dozen family members, Henh Coong Giong, 47, faced Penrith District Court last Friday after pleading guilty to the 2008 offences. The court heard Giong avoided detection following the June 2008 raids on 6 Schleicher Street, St Marys and 7 Valma Place, Colyton, where officers attached to Operation Yalumba uncovered 211 and 279 plants respectively. It wasn’t until Giong was busted in December 2012 and jailed for a similar offence, that his finger prints and DNA were taken and later matched to those found on lamp shades seized from the sites of the earlier offences. The court heard Giong was offered $300 per day for a total of seven days work, but was never paid due to the raids.
The defence argued the accused was prejudiced by the delay and denied the chance to serve an aggregate sentence, with police only arresting Giong for the “stale offences” on February 14, 2015. But the Crown contended the defendant was given the benefit of a first offence when he had clearly offended before. Judge Warwick Hunt sympathised with the submissions of both parties, before finding only full-time custody would be appropriate. Giong is eligible for release on parole on November 1, 2017.
Drunk man wrote off sister-inlaw’s car in crash
A man who drove drunk, writing off his sister-in-law’s car, has been barred from driving for nine months. Shane Lee Coleman fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with high-range drink driving and negligent driving. The court heard the defendant exited the car through the front window and was in shock following the accident, which occurred after a drinking session at a Penrith club. Magistrate Stephen Corry told the accused he was fortunate “no one happened upon his path” or the court would be sentencing him to a lengthy term of imprisonment. “Even if you’ve never been in trouble and you’ve got a pile of references saying what a good guy you are [the court would still be forced to act],” he said. “You’re lucky to be here today given what I read of the facts.” He was fined $1,400, ordered to fit an interlock device to his car for 24 months and slapped with a 12-month good behaviour bond.
Man assaulted mate while watching sport
A man who assaulted his mate while watching footy has been hit with a 10-month intensive corrections order (ICO).
Darren William Nash appeared via audio video link at Penrith Local Court last Thursday, charged with ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’ and breaching a Section 12 bond. The court heard Mr Nash’s victim wound up in hospital following the attack, with Mr Nash’s lawyer conceding the defendant has “significant issues with alcohol”. Magistrate Stephen Corry questioned whether the accused would be able to adhere to the conditions of the ICO, a custodial sentence served in the community. “Does he understand he’s not allowed to drink?” he asked. “They’ll test you,” Magistrate Corry warned, addressing Mr Nash.
Prison time for man with worrying criminal record
Driving while suspended has proven costly for Reece McNamara, who was sentenced to at least eight months’ jail after pleading guilty to two counts of the offence. Mr McNamara faced Penrith Local Court from Silverwater Jail last Thursday where he was also sentenced for two counts of ‘possess prohibited drug’, one count of ‘goods in custody’, one count each of ‘use unregistered and uninsured car’ and one count of ‘state false name’. “You continue to drive a motor vehicle even at times when you’re already before a court,” Magistrate Stephen Corry said. He was convicted, disqualified for four years, fined $500 and handed an 18-month good behaviour bond.
Matter relisted so facts can be negotiated
Celia Dawn Blomfield Acree’s matter has been adjourned in order to negotiate facts. Ms Acree fronted Penrith District Court last Friday charged with ‘drive manner dangerous occasioning death’. The matter was relisted for September 30 when a sentence date will be set.

Police Snapshot COMPILED BY JADE ALIPRANDI
St Marys: Woman had “medical episode” before serious crash
A woman is believed to have had a medical episode after she lost control of her vehicle and mounted the gutter. At about 2pm on Wednesday, August 31, police were called to a single vehicle accident in Queen Street, St Marys. It’s alleged the 52-year-old St Marys woman was driving along Queen Street when she had a medical episode causing her to lose control of the vehicle. The vehicle mounted the gutter and collided with a billboard on the foot path. She was conveyed to Nepean Hospital. Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
Cranebrook: Teenager to face court after incident with officer
A Penrith Highway Patrol Officer was allegedly abused by a man when he was dealing with a separate incident. At about 12.10pm on Wednesday, August 31, the police officer was speaking with a motorist on Collen Place, Cranebrook, when a young man approached the officer. The alleged offender began swearing at and abusing the officer. The officer allegedly warned the man to stop however he continued to swear and abuse the officer. Police attempted to arrest the young man but he ran away and entered a premises via the rear door. Officers gained access to the property and while they were attempting to arrest the man, he allegedly began to throw his arms around and kick his legs. Police were forced to deploy OC spray to his face, with police then able to arrest him. The 17-year-old Cranebrook man was issued a court attendance notice for ‘resist officer in execution of duty’, and ‘offensive language in a public place’. He is due to appear in the Parramatta Children’s Court on Friday, September 23 to face the charges.

North St Marys: Man busted during service station robbery
Police were called to a local service station in North St Marys last week after the owner was alerted to someone being in the store via an alarm. At about 3am on Monday, August 29, police were called to the service station on Glossop Street. On arrival police met with the owner who had remotely checked his CCTV cameras after an alarm activation and had located a person inside the store. Police entered the store and located a 44-year-old North St Marys man. The man had caused extensive damage to the premises by allegedly using a sledge hammer to break through the cement block wall to gain access to the mechanics room. He allegedly also used the sledge hammer to break through the wall and entered the service station itself. He was arrested and charged with ‘break and enter’ and ‘steal value less than $60,000’. His bail was refused and he is due to appear at Penrith Local Court on October 10.
St Marys: Wallacia woman busted drink-driving
A woman was charged with several offences after she was allegedly caught by police drink-driving. At about 7.20pm on Sunday, September 4, police were conducting random breath tests in St Marys. Police stopped a 22-year-old Wallacia woman and she was subjected to a roadside breath test. It’s alleged she returned a positive sample. She was taken to Penrith Police Station where she underwent a breath analysis that returned a positive reading of 0.111. Further checks were made on her driver’s licence which revealed she is a suspended driver. The driver was charged with ‘drive with middle range PCA’ and ‘drive motor vehicle while licence suspended’.

Spring has sprung! Did you know that you only have eight weeks left to get your property on the market if you want to settle and have the money in your bank account before Christmas? Most property sales have a settlement period of six weeks. This means you need to have your property looking a million dollars and on the market well before the start of November if you want to take advantage of a busy spring property market and be out of your old property and into your new one before the New Year. Here are some tips for you to consider as the property market heats up: Choose the right agent You need an agent that is going to be able to secure you an excellent price for your property and work well with other service providers such as your lawyer. If you are looking for an agent and don’t know where to start, contact us and we can put you in contact with someone in our network. Complete your own informal Pest and Building Report Any buyer is going to want a Building and Pest Inspector to look through your property to check for any defects. Do a walk through yourself and make a list of things you need to fix. Trust us, fixing the little things now can add thousands to your property’s price tag! Talk to a mortgage broker and make sure you don’t have any break fees on your mortgage This usually only applies if you have a fixed interest rate, but you should also be talking to your mortgage broker about how much you have left to pay

off your loan and what you will be left with after you sell your property. If you’re a first time buyer, you need to find out how much money you can borrow. We can put you in touch with a broker if you need a hand with this. If you are selling an investment property, talk to your accountant It is important you know about any Capital Gains Tax liability you might have if you sell your investment. The most important thing about buying or selling a home is getting the right advice. You need advice from a range of sources including your lawyer, real estate experts (agents), mortgage brokers and accountants. You may even want to speak to your financial planner if you are considering purchasing an investment property through your self-managed superannuation fund. Remember, these experts do this every day and know what they are talking about. You can’t be expected to go it alone, especially if you are inexperienced, or like most people only buy or sell property once or twice a decade. Snooker club thrilled with new home Game on! Panthers comes to the rescue and revives snooker club left homeless earlier this year DALE DRINKWATER
fter weeks in limbo not knowing if their snooker club had a future, the boys are back doing what they love – sinking balls and drinking beers. The Penrith Panthers Leagues Club have come to the rescue after the snooker club’s previous home at the Penrith RSL could no longer accommodate them. “We are now officially the Panthers Snooker Club,” Club President Martin Boston said, before adding that Panthers hadn’t had their own snooker club since 1995. Now, almost 50 men in the club can get back to their Tuesday 6pm to 10pm and Wednesday 10am to 2pm competitions in their brand new, modified location downstairs close to TC’s Sports Bar. “Panthers have been really generous. Everything we asked for they did,” Mr Boston said. “They took a wall out to give us more room, we asked for a cupboard to put gear in and they gave us a whole store room.” Panthers even opened the bar next to the snooker tables earlier for them, that started pouring beer from 5.45pm on Tuesday night.

The way things are going it can only get better,” he said. Panthers General Manager, Jason Stone, said they are delighted to welcome the
Penrith Snooker Club to Panthers. “With a couple of changes such as knocking out walls, moving cupboards and the snooker tables, we were able to make them feel right at home,” he said. “Whilst a decision is not taken lightly to welcome a Sub Club to Panthers, we do not like to see community groups not have the opportunities to be able to represent the local area through lack of facilities, and if
there is a way that Panthers can assist, we will most definitely do our best.” The Panthers Snooker Club now hopes younger generations will join for just $20 per year, on top of Panthers Leagues’ $5 membership. For membership enquiries contact Martin Boston on 0413 885 437 or visit the snooker club near TC’s Sports Bar from 6pm Tuesdays.

Music for Life
Community
There’s still a handful of tickets left to the annual Music for Life Ball, which is being held on Saturday, September 17 at the Penrith Paceway. Now in its sixth year, Music for Life has raised almost $300,000 for brain cancer research. Music for Life this year is asking guests to “dress to impress” in spring fashion. Music for Life consists of an amazing three course dinner, entertainment, auctions, raffles and lots of fun, information and of course lots of music as well. This year Music for Life will be in a purpose built marquee complete with wooden floor, carpet, lined with silk and with room for 500 guests as well as a dance floor. The marquee will be situated at the Penrith Paceway. Tickets are $140 per person or $1200 for a table of 10. To book tickets or a table go to www. musicforlife.net.au.

he first residents of the newly built Australian Foundation for Disability (AFFORD) Penrith group houses moved into their new home last week, ready to begin the journey of independent living. In partnership with the NSW State Government’s Family and Community Services – Aging Disability and Home Care (ADHC), AFFORD has funded and constructed six purpose-built group homes that will house up to 40 residents. The $16 million project is a culmination of three years of planning, design and consultation with builders and clients to create homes that are tailored for the needs of residents with intellectual disabilities. AFFORD resident, Andrew, was one of three men that moved into their new home, known as ‘Dolphin Cove’. “I love my new home because it is beautiful and clean,” he said. “I go to work by walking to the bus stop and then catch the bus with my housemates. “In my new home I take part in the cooking program, house chores and enjoy the rest of the evening by watching TV.” The three housemates have worked at

Clarification In the September 2, 2016 edition of The Western Weekender it was reported that independent candidate for South Ward, Susan Day was left with “no preference deal to make”. The Weekender acknowledges that Ms Day chose not to enter in to any preference deals with other candidates. Ms Day confirmed it was her own choice not to preference any other candidate. No other candidate is preferencing Ms Day at tomorrow’s election.

AFFORD lifestyle assistants will also provide residents with support to enhance their skills in daily activities such as shopping and taking part in social activities, in an effort to build confidence for a long term goal of independent living.
AFFORD CEO, Steven Herald, said the new group homes signify a journey of personal development. “For some, these group homes will be their first experience of living independently with peers,” he said. “They will have the chance to enjoy similar interests, socialising and will also understand the responsibilities of living on their own.”

Western Sydney Airport at Badgerys Creek should be cancelled forthwith. Financial arrangements for Badgerys Creek Airport should be transferred immediately to facilitate installation of Very Fast Rail (VFR) first stage SydneyCanberra-Melbourne, second stage Sydney-Brisbane. Also to continue urgent road works already commenced. Air travel for intercity passenger transport is recognised as an anachronism worldwide, and is only sustainable for inter continental passenger travel. There is no real evidence to show that a Badgerys Creek Airport would increase employment, in fact I believe VFR would increase employment. Sydney Airport is operating well under capacity now and will be much less noise and pollution nuisance to city residents with the inevitable installation of intercity VFR. WALLY COX, MULGOA

The Prime Minister said “heads would roll”, maybe he better have a look at his own head first, because there is not much that he touches that works out at all. Then we have the Treasurer who got up in Parliament and said that he had a $6 billion budget repair bill, but someone did not add it up right and it was $100 million short. It just does not stop there, one week in Parliament and some of the Liberals just walk out and go home, when they only have a one seat majority or are they just too cocky and don’t care? The parliament has only sat for one week and it has three years to go and it keeps on going from one disaster to another. Mr Turnbull can’t control his own members of his party, I wonder how long it will last? MILES ANDERSON, EMU PLAINS

Have the people made the right decision returning the Liberal Party back into government? Over the last few weeks since the election, including the first sitting week of Parliament, we have seen one problem after another; a Royal Commission into youth detention, which was shown on the ABC. t just four-and-a-half-monthsold, Glenmore Park resident Kyla Devine received a life-saving liver transplant after she was on the waiting list for just nine hours. Doctors told the Devine family that it was the second fastest time for someone to receive an organ transplant and that if Kyla didn’t have it when she did, she wouldn’t have survived the week. “She was put on the list as number one basically – it was really dire circumstances,” Kyla’s mother, Katelan Devine, told the Weekender. “We are so lucky she received it when she did and she now gets to be active like any other child.” Now, at nine-years-old, Kyla will have the opportunity to compete in several activities at the 15th Australian Transplant Games this month. The Games promote the benefits of donation and transplantation, and help transplant recipients strive towards improved health and fitness. Capturing life’s precious moments DALE DRINKWATER
e all think newborn babies are cute but Wallacia’s Natalie Howe takes them to another level. The popular snapper has been recognised as Australia’s top professional newborn photographer. After a 14 year career in portrait, wedding and newborn photography, and winning Family Photographer of the Year in 2015, Ms Howe never expected further recognition at the Australian Professional Photography Awards. “I feel a bit humbled, I did not expect it at all but when it’s recognition from the industry it’s a great feeling,” she said of her win at the Melbourne-based awards ceremony last week. “To have the recognition of your peers is a wonderful thing because you feel like you’re on the right track.” Her business grew from both its Glenmore Park and Penrith premises, and now she works from her rustic property and home studio in Wallacia. “The business has grown so much,” she said. “I started doing children’s portraits first when my 14-year-old was little, then was thrown into a friend’s wedding. “As I started doing more weddings, clients started coming back because they

had babies, so I started photographing newborns.” Ms Howe was one of 580 entrants who submitted a collective 2,200 images at the 40th anniversary of the largest awards for professional print photography in Australia. National president of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP), Vittorio Natoli, said the entrants are becoming of a higher standard every year. “The awards represent the best of the best of professional photography in Australia,” he said. “To be able to enter, photographers must meet the AIPP’s required standard, which has been further lifted this year.” Photographers like Ms Howe who win a category are then eligible to become Australia’s Professional Photographer of the Year, whose images are then judged further based on innovation, content, creativity, technical excellence and impact. The 2016 awards were peer-judged anonymously over three days by some of Australia’s most recognised photographers including Jerry Ghionis, Peter Eastway, Peter Rossi and Charmaine Heyer. Last year, the AIPP’s accreditation standards were awarded landmark certification from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Council News Council elections On Saturday, September 10, Penrith residents on the electoral roll are required to vote in the Council election. Polling places are located at local schools and community halls and will be open from 8am to 6pm. Penrith is made up of three wards – North, South and East. To vote, you need to attend a polling place located in your ward. For details on locations and accessibility of each of the polling places, go to penrithcity.nsw.gov.au. Councillors work together to make decisions about what the council will do to meet community needs and how money should be spent in the best interests of the community as whole. Approaching the end of the existing Council’s four-year term, we reviewed Council’s priorities to ensure we are on track to deliver the community needs for the next four years and beyond. NADO counts on its friends to help deliver important new car
Keeping the Peace: Recognition for 50 years of JP service DALE DRINKWATER
wo local residents have been recognised for their 50 years of service, volunteering as Justice of the Peaces (JP) in NSW. They are two of the state’s longest serving JPs, but Leo Bahlmann and Gregory Pigott, don’t think their legal roles witnessing the signing of documents is anything to create a fuss over. Mr Bahlmann has been acting as a JP in the Penrith area for over 40 years, but was modest in his receipt of his 50 years of service certificate from Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres last Friday. “It’s just part of the bit... it’s not a big thing. I’m humbled by this because I don’t think we deserve any recognition,” he told the Weekender. Mr Bahlmann has had a long career in the insurance industry, and said working as a JP simply complemented it. “In the insurance industry we had to investigate a lot of incidents and claims and had to take statements, and they had to be witnessed by a JP, so it was very convenient,” he said. Mr Pigott, meanwhile, found himself as a JP after his boss in the bank he was working at instructed him to do so. “There were always customers coming into the bank looking for a JP, so I was

Denise Heath, CEO of NADO, said the program has been so successful they realised they needed to think bigger. “We thought about how we could help our clients realise their goals of community life when accessible transport is so limited,” she said. “It is so difficult to get to appointments or places that are not close to an accessible station or convenient to home.” This single wheelchair converted vehicle is ideal for people who need transport for their individual needs, without having to be in a small bus.

Leo Bahlmann, Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres and Gregory Pigott told to become one and just kept going,” he said. Mr Ayres thinks their role in the practical application of the law, such as signing statutory declarations, affidavits or certifying copies of original documents is something to celebrate. “It’s a rare achievement to provide an important voluntary service to the community for such a long period of time, and Mr Bahlmann and Mr Pigott thoroughly deserve to be honoured,” he said. he results are in for the biggest schools literacy competition in the country, with Penrith Christian School’s Year 7 team taking out second place nationally. ‘Word Mania’ sees students from 67 schools compete across three days to become the national finalists for their year group. The free competition for students in Years 1 to 9 is based on an online word building game developed by literacy education program, LiteracyPlanet. It involves building phonics, spelling, word recognition and vocabulary skills. Teacher at Penrith Christian School, Danneelle Heyne, said she was proud of the students’ achievement at the very popular competition. “All the students have worked so hard
and they’ve had a lot of fun doing it, so I’m really happy with it,” she said. The students had four weeks of practice rounds, two weeks of competition rounds and had to make it in the top 10 schools to get to the finals. Year 8 headed into the finals after coming in at number four, while Year 7, which had 61 students participating, headed into the final round in the number one spot. “We practiced a lot with little competitions in class and the students used the program at home for homework and they just worked through it really well,” Ms Heyne said. The three-day final round ran between Monday, August 22 and Wednesday, August 24. Winning schools received a trophy and cash prize with first place receiving $1000, second place earning $500, and third place awarded $250.

Helping young people enter the workforce after high school eaving school is a significant transition point in the life of a young person with a disability, which is why Ability Options is helping bridge the gap. Ability Options’ School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) helps young people with disability develop the skills they need to increase their independence and participate in employment as valued and active members of the community. Ability Options’ SLES supports school leavers with disability to access suitable employment, education and vocational training. It does so by offering real experiences that support and prepare participants in the development of new skills, work preparation, and training. Ability Options’ Helena Xabregas said they offer valuable support through tertiary education including accredited courses, qualifications-in-house and TAFE qualifications.

customer named James requested an itinerary via online travel website ‘Skyscanner’ and was surprised to find a 47 year (yes year!) stopover in Bangkok. In good humour, he posted this question on their Facebook page: “Hi Skyscanner. Just wondering what you’d recommend I do during the 47 years layover your website has suggested?”. Hopefully, most companies would have replied quickly to this query with a response such as, “We are terribly sorry for the error. We will send you a correct itinerary ASAP” – which would have been perfectly acceptable. However, this company took their response to a whole other level, responding to James with great wit and humour. An employee named ‘Jen’ provided James with a suggested, humorous itinerary for his 47 years in Bangkok. A subsequent Facebook comment pointed out that in addition to the 47 year stopover, James would be travelling back in time. To which ‘Jen’ replied, “This was all an elaborate hoax to divert everyone’s attention from our real plan
of time travel”. The exchange ended with the comment, “Skyscanner, you win at customer replies on the Internet for at least the next 47 years” and ‘Jen’ sending James a package “with bits and bobs that might be useful for the next 47 years in Bangkok”. ‘Jen’ exhibited the perfect blend of politeness, humour and responsiveness. Her responses reflected the brand and image that I imagine an online based company would want to project. This exchange could have been quite different if Skyscanner had not responded (that is, James may have posted a subsequent negative comment). And they have certainly gained many potential customers in the process, who thoroughly enjoyed the exchange and will remember this company’s name next time they want to book travel. It shows us all just how important employees are to the success of a business. They are a constant window into the core values of your business, as they will reflect the culture in which they work.

few weeks ago I was having a coffee in a local café. I had ordered my usual latte and sat down to read the latest business news on my phone. When I went to pay for the coffee, the owner said there was no charge. He said he had been paid by a new business to surprise regular customers with a free coffee and to promote that business to the lucky person. I was thrilled to not have to pay for the coffee and gladly took the sponsoring business’ card. What a great way to introduce a new business to the world! In the last month one of my clients had organised a product launch. But instead of a free cup of coffee, my client hosted an African-themed evening with the local Chamber of Commerce. This gave my client the opportunity to introduce some new products she imports from that region. By all accounts the evening was a success. Sponsoring a group of like-minded people is a great way to launch a new product or service and plants the seeds for future sales.
o om t d e fre
Alternatively, you might consider the electronic approach. Social media helps generate great word of mouth. Involve your followers by making offers on the occasion of the launch. Use social media from an early stage to build up interest in the product. For example, post hints and teasers before the launch, release a short video talking about the product in general terms. All this will make people want to know more. It will increase the likelihood of a successful introduction. One thing you should not do is a “Like and Share” campaign. This may increase your followers, but they are not necessarily interested in your products, just the chance of getting something for free. If you want more information or ideas for launching your new product or service, then speak with our business advisors at the Western Sydney Business Centre. See you next week.

MATCH PREVIEW
BULLDOGS
TROY DODDS @troydodds
O
n paper, the last five weeks tells a tale that heavily favours the Panthers’ chances against Canterbury and its brutal forward pack on Sunday afternoon. There is no denying that Penrith is in terrific form, collecting five wins in a row including four games in which they’ve scored 36 points or more, most recently highlighted by a 36-6 thrashing of Manly last Sunday night. The Bulldogs meanwhile have lost their last three games and only narrowly escaped with wins over the lowly Sea Eagles and Knights prior to that. This Sunday afternoon’s match sees a team that has very much found its mojo against a side that is struggling to hold on to theirs.
But as those superannuation funds say, past performance is no guarantee of future performance. And the Bulldogs, as so many have pointed out, have some history with this kind of situation. They were in awful form heading into the 2014 Finals but managed to flick the switch when the smell of September came around, and steamrolled their way to the 2014 Grand Final, where they eventually ran out of puff against a South Sydney side that nobody was ever going to beat. In many ways this is a David and Goliath battle. The Bulldogs have managed to keep their spine on the field for most of the season – Will Hopoate and Michael Lichaa have played 21 out of 24 matches while Josh Reynolds and Moses Mbye haven’t missed a game this year. Props Aiden Tolman and James Graham also haven’t missed a game this season (though some would suggest the latter should be sitting out this weekend).
Bulldogs coach Des Hasler simply needs to work out why it’s not clicking given the overall consistency and quality of his team line-ups – a task easier said than done. On the other side of the fence, Anthony Griffin reassembled Penrith’s spine midseason and has had to deal with losing both his starting centres (Dean Whare and Peta Hiku) for most of the season, as well as his starting props in Sam McKendry and Reagan Campbell-Gillard, both of whom won’t be back for the Finals. The Panthers have got to the Finals on the back of a captain in his first year, a fiveeighth who should be a second rower, a halfback who is 18-years-old and a hooker who wasn’t a hooker this time last year. The Penrith story in 2016 is nothing short of a rugby league fairytale. Griffin simply needs to make sure it doesn’t stop clicking – again, easier said than done. The two sides only met once during the season with the Bulldogs getting home 18-16 thanks to a last minute try.

This will obviously be no walk in the park for Penrith and just the atmosphere of Finals football could be enough to lift the Bulldogs and spook the young Panthers, but I’m struggling to find an argument to really prove that James Graham’s men can turn it around. Completion rates win games and Penrith is simply doing it so much better than the Bulldogs at the moment. Tip: Panthers by 8.

PANTHER RUMBLINGS with The Masked Panther
KINGS OF THE KIDS » Pictures like this (right) are what
Panthers officials have been dying to see for years. Finally, kids in the local area who were worryingly jumping on the bandwagon of clubs like the Wests Tigers, Bulldogs and Souths are starting to come back to Penrith on the back of a local breed of heroes like Nathan Cleary, Bryce Cartwright and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak. It was incredible to see such a huge crowd greet Penrith players at a special event at McDonald’s in Penrith last week, and scenes like this are becoming more and more common.
» Penrith fans, along with supporters of
other clubs, were left banging their heads on their desks this week after yet another Ticketek blunder. Finals tickets went on sale to Members at 10am on Monday, but as has become all too common, the Ticketek website crashed and it proved impossible to purchase tickets for more than an hour. Seriously, how has a company like Ticketek not worked out by now that putting four Finals matches on sale at the same time was a bad idea? An 18-year-
old intern could have come up with an idea to put games on sale at different times and yet the boffins at Ticketek couldn’t work it out. It’s ridiculous that a company whose entire purpose is to sell tickets can’t invest in the infrastructure to ensure its website can remain up during times of high demand.
» Panthers supporters hoping to feel at
home at Allianz Stadium on Sunday may find it a little bit difficult, with very few of our creature comforts making the trip. That includes veteran ground announcer Scott McRae, who isn’t allowed to host the game. There will be plenty of fans there though, with tickets selling well and an unprecedented number of supporter buses set to make the trip.
» The Jennings era at Penrith is officially over with George Jennings signing with Parramatta, and Robert Jennings on his way to Souths. It’s incredible how things work out considering all the talk about the Jennings brothers over the years, but once the club cut ties with older
brother Michael, the brothers’ bond with Penrith was broken. Nobody at Penrith is too worried about how it’s all worked out – there’s still a general feeling that Michael’s attitude was a problem, while club officials remain unconvinced that Robert and George will ever be regular first graders.
» Veteran trainer Ron Palmer will also be
heading up the M4 next season after inking a deal with the Eels. He’ll be aiming to whip the Parramatta boys into shape.
» Congratulations to Tyrone May, Robert
Jennings, Oliver Clark and Dylan Edwards who have all been named in the 2016 Holden Cup Team of the Year. Premiership-winning Panthers coach Cameron Ciraldo was named Coach of the Year. It’s been a terrific year for Penrith’s Holden Cup side, which finished as Minor Premiers after the regular season and remain favourites to take out the trophy. The five Panther representatives were at Allianz Stadium on Monday morning (pictured) for the presentation of the Team of the Year.
» I reported last week that there would
be no Finals t-shirt this year. Some good last minute scrambling and a deal with Classic Sportswear has resulted in a shirt being produced, and it’ll be available from today. It’s $34.95 and looks fantastic. Well worth purchasing!
» I’m not sure what Penrith’s aversion is
to actually naming the grandstands and/ or hills at Pepper Stadium. It was a little weird last Sunday night when the names of Greg Alexander, Royce Simmons, Craig Gower and Grahame Moran were emblazoned on top of the Eastern Grandstand. While it was a wonderful gesture, the club was quick to point out it isn’t actually ‘naming’ those stands after the legendary players in question. Why not? I don’t think anyone would have an issue with the Alexander-Simmons stand and the Gower-Moran stand. In fact, fans would embrace it. By the way, some very longstanding fans tell me the grandstands were actually named at one stage in the early 1990s, but signs were never erected and the idea slowly disappeared as different administrations came and went.

NATHAN TAYLOR @natetaylor87
O
n the eve of his first ever Finals campaign with the Panthers, veteran dummy half Peter Wallace has opened up about his shift to hooker and future at the club. After beginning his NRL career with Penrith in 2005 and then returning to the club following a long stint with Brisbane in 2014, this Sunday’s Elimination Final between the Panthers and Bulldogs will surprisingly be Wallace’s first Finals game for Penrith. Wallace was unavailable for selection during Penrith’s impressive Finals campaign in 2014 due to a serious knee injury, but is relishing the chance of finally playing big time footy again.
“I debuted for Penrith in 2005 and this is my first Finals series for the club – I’m excited about that,” he told Extra Time. “Although I went away for a few years, I’m excited to be playing Finals again.” While he hasn’t played in the post-season with Penrith before, Wallace has played plenty of Finals footy including under current Panthers coach Anthony Griffin, who coached the Broncos during part of Wallace’s run there from 2008 to 2013. The soon to be 31-year-old said coach Griffin doesn’t usually change his demeanour in the lead-up to the most important time of year. “He doesn’t change too much as the year goes on… obviously when different games pop up during the year and when the stakes are higher things get more intense, but all his messages pretty much stay the same,” he said. As a player with Finals experience,

Journalist Nathan Taylor chats with Panthers hooker Peter Wallace. Photo: Melinda Jane Wallace will play a key role for the inexperienced Panthers this Sunday in the now familiar position of hooker. Wallace made the transition to hooker earlier this year after regular dummy half James Segeyaro broke his arm. Wallace admits he probably wouldn’t have re-signed with Penrith if he didn’t switch to the number nine jumper.
“Probably not, no. I sort of thought it would be my last year here especially with Te Maire Martin coming to the club and Nathan Cleary coming through,” he said. “I started contemplating my future… my manager had been enquiring over in England. “Looking back it’s funny how it’s all turned out.”

THE DREW REVIEW with Brad Drew
PERFECT PANTHERS The Panthers finished the regular season in sensational style on Sunday night in front of a great home crowd and absolutely dominated the Sea Eagles during most parts of the match. Triple M’s Grill Team even commented on Monday morning that the first half was a perfect half of football! A pretty good thing to hear as the team now head into the Finals. One thing that the Panthers will be only too aware of though is that accolades like that don’t count for much if you are unable to replicate a performance like the one seen on Sunday in game one of the Finals. Coach Anthony Griffin will be making it clear to his young chargers this week that the season is now really just starting and there is plenty of hard work ahead for both the players and the coaching staff.
Take nothing away from what the Panthers have already achieved this season though, and I am confident that the best is yet to come. Bryce Cartwright, Matt Moylan and Nathan Cleary continue to play with maturity and confidence, and I am excited to watch them step it up a notch this week against the Bulldogs. The Panthers will realise that the Bulldogs coming into the match after three straight losses will mean absolutely nothing once the whistle goes this Sunday afternoon at Allianz Stadium. If James Graham’s match-up last week with his fellow countryman Sam Burgess is anything to go by, he will have his team absolutely fired up this week to resurrect their form and try to rain on Penrith’s parade. Another big game early Sunday morning
sees two lovely young girls Kate and Ella play in their soccer Grand Final.
Good luck girls, I hope you bring home the goods!

NATHAN TAYLOR @natetaylor87
P
enrith fullback Matt Moylan said he’s excited to lead the club in his first ever Finals game as skipper this Sunday afternoon at Allianz Stadium. The Panthers will take on the Canterbury Bulldogs in an Elimination Final after qualifying in sixth position on the back of five straight wins. Speaking at the 2016 NRL Finals Launch, the 25-year-old said he’s buzzing ahead of Sunday’s all-Sydney blockbuster. “I’m excited at the opportunity… it’s something I’ve wanted to achieve – playing in the Finals – and the challenge ahead is pretty exciting,” he said. After surprising the competition to reach
the Preliminary Final in 2014, Penrith missed the 2015 Finals after being decimated with injury during the season. With a new coach on board and some fresh faces, Moylan said it was a preseason goal to return to the Finals. “It was a team goal at the start of the year to be back playing Finals footy and, now that it’s upon us, a new season starts,” he said. “It’s do or die for us from now on, so we’re going to have to work hard every week and prepare well this week against the Dogs.” Canterbury have the wood over Penrith this season after winning a last minute thriller way back in Round 2. The two western Sydney clubs also have plenty of recent Finals history including the 2014 Preliminary Final, which saw the Bulldogs eliminate Penrith to advance to the Grand Final. The Bulldogs also eliminated the

Penrith captain Matt Moylan at the Finals Launch on Monday. Photo: Melinda Jane Panthers in the 2004 Preliminary Final, so Penrith will be hoping history doesn’t repeat itself on Sunday. Moylan said he’s not taking too much out of the Bulldogs’ recent form. “I don’t think you can read too much into the way they’ve played the last couple of weeks, they’re definitely a quality side,” he said.
“We have to be wary of their big boys, they set the platform for their halves to play off.” Bulldogs captain James Graham praised Penrith’s recent form and said Sunday’s game will be a tough ask for his side. “Penrith are a very young and exciting football team at the minute, they are playing really well,” he said.

party is over for the Penrith Panthers reserve grade team after they were eliminated from the ISP Finals at the hands of the New Zealand Warriors last Sunday afternoon. The Panthers scraped into the top eight after defeating the Warriors in the final game of the season, but the boys from Penrith weren’t quite able to replicate their performance from the previous week and were subsequently beaten 21-14 at Mt Smart Stadium. The Panthers fell behind 14-0 early with Warriors fullback Henare Wells scoring a quick double. Penrith managed to even up proceedings after half-time thanks to tries to Chris Anuse-Scanlon and Antonio Pelesasa. Skipper Zach Dockar-Clay slotted over a penalty goal to level the scores at 14-all. However, the Kiwis struck back through Matt Allwood and capped off the memorable victory with a field goal to Mason Lino in the closing stages. Penrith’s defeat ends what has been an odd season for the side under new coach Steve Georgallis. Penrith didn’t get off to the best of starts in 2016 but found some form during the middle part of the year, largely thanks to the demotions of Jamie Soward and James Segeyaro from first grade. Once Soward and Segeyaro moved on to England, Penrith once again fell in a heap and even endured a disastrous late season losing streak. The team is expected to be stronger in 2017.
» Holden Cup: The Penrith Panthers
will tackle the Cronulla Sharks in this Sunday afternoon’s Qualifying Final at Allianz Stadium. If the minor premiership-wining Panthers manage to overcome the fourthplaced Sharks, they’ll earn themselves a week’s rest heading into the Preliminary Final. Last Sunday afternoon Penrith demolished last-placed Manly 47-14 in the final game of the regular season. The Panthers led 24-6 at the break and were never troubled from then on. Try scorers for the Panthers included: Christian Chrichton (2), Reed Izzard (2), Daniel Brown, Corey Waddell, Ratu Tuisese, Wayde Egan and Liam Martin. The huge win capped off an excellent regular season for the young Panthers winning 18 games, drawing two and losing just four.
» Ron Massey Cup: St Marys are one
win away from the Ron Massey Cup Grand Final after they overcame Mounties 26-22 in their Qualifying Final last weekend. St Marys have now earned themselves a well-earned week off and will take on the winner out of this Sunday’s Western Suburbs versus Guildford clash for a place in the 2016 decider. It was inspiring effort from Brad Drew’s men, who trailed 18-6 at half-time before clawing their way back in the second half to secure victory. Try scorers for St Marys included: Veta Lilomaiava, Adrian Davis, Jamie Hill, Robbie Graham and Tom Eisenhuth.

Getting hotter as years go by KATE REID
W
hen my call gets connected to Hot Chocolate’s Patrick Olive it’s late in the evening in the UK and the musician is sitting back enjoying a glass of Australian Shiraz. Unsurprisingly Patrick doesn’t mind staying up for late night interviews, having spent many evenings of his life performing on stage for audiences around the globe. As a founding member of a soul/disco/ pop band that created popular tracks like
‘You Sexy Thing’ he’s witnessed his fair share of audience members letting loose after dark. One of the more unexpected events happened recently during a performance of the hit song, which movie buffs will know from the film ‘The Full Monty’. “We did a show about three weeks ago and the stage was completely taken over by the audience,” Patrick explained. “After all these years with Hot Chocolate I’ve never seen anything like it. “They didn’t grab the instruments but everybody wanted to shed their clothing, take the microphone and sing. “Whenever we play the song people go absolutely ballistic.”
While Aussie audiences may not get quite that revealing, Patrick admits it’s the enthusiasm they get from fans Down Under that keeps Hot Chocolate heading back to our shores so frequently. “Australians, they go out to enjoy themselves and they certainly do that,” he said. “If Australians like you they really do like you. They love the band, they dance to our songs, they sing to our songs, it makes us want to keep coming back over and over and over again.” And come back they will next month for their 70s Disco Mania show at the Evan Theatre. Joining them will be fellow UK soul band The Real Thing.
“We’re like brothers, we’ve known each other since the days of the ‘Top of the Pops’,” Patrick said of the band. It’s this type of camaraderie, and the fun of the disco era, that are the fondest memories for Patrick when looking back on those early years. “Musicians love being with each other, because it’s always a great hoot of an evening,” he said. Hot Chocolate & The Real Thing will be performing at the Evan Theatre at Panthers Leagues Club on Sunday, October 16 at 8pm. Tickets are $73.65-$85.95. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.penrith.panthers.com.au or call 4720 5555.

hen it comes to entertainment I think it’s safe to say there’s nothing quite like Cirque du
Soleil. Premiering on Thursday, August 25 ‘Kooza’ is the latest show to hit our shores and by the looks of the excited crowds at the packed out opening night – it’s likely to be another hit. After taking our seats under the big top, the show opened with the introduction of The Innocent, a character who is taken on a journey through this ‘circus in a box’. ‘Kooza’ focuses heavily on acrobatic performance and clowning, but for myself it was the former that was the most engaging. The show features a beautiful aerial hoop routine, contortionists that appear to be missing a few bones and the teeterboard artists who fly, spin and twirl through the air. But the most jaw dropping acts were the wheel of death and the high wire. Both routines were mesmerising, and clearly pretty high up on the dangerous scale. There was no greater demonstration of this than the point in the show where two high wire artists, balancing
on bikes on the wire, put a pole on their shoulders and had another artist balance on a chair on the pole. This was one of many moments that left myself, my friend, and no doubt most of the audience wondering ‘how are they doing that?!’ In this question lies the key to the circus’ success. Along with the laughs

n interesting wine and food match to get a rollicking conversation going at that next dinner party is the lesser-known Italianheritage drop Aglianico that’s now being made in increasing quantities in Australia, coupled with a flavoursome pasta dish that in its home-town Naples is called Spaghetti alla Puttanesca. Around 20 wineries in NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania are now producing Aglianico here, with the biggest maker Calabria Family Wines at Griffith in the NSW Riverina. And their latest release, the 2014 Calabria Private Bin is a wonderfully rich and savoury drop whose delightful fruit profile now rewards even further by coming more forward with a little time in the cellar. Plus with softer tannins than those in its homeland, at $15 it’s a great buy with that spag suggestion, or more-Aussie-thinking minted barbecued lamb chops. One to note: Domaine Chandon (pictured) blended fruit from its coolest Upper Yarra Valley and more moderate Woori Yallock and Yarra Junction vineyards for its now-available 2015 Chardonnay, a lovely wine reflecting the rewarding intensity and flavour concentrations of low-yielding vines. With naturally vibrant and zesty Chardonnay flavours and fermentation in French oak barrels, this is a drop that is all about fresh lime, ripe melon and nectarine flavours and a zesty acidity, and when poured stone fruit aromas and cinnamon characters. At $32, this is one that’s ideal with a pear, walnut and goat’s cheese salad.

OUT NOW WON T UO BOOK
DVD Money Monster
Rated M // KATE REID Two of Hollywood’s biggest names come together for the dramatic thriller ‘Money Monster’. The film centres around financial advisor Lee Gates (George Clooney), who hosts his own show on cable TV. During a live broadcast a deliveryman wanders onto the set and holds Gates at gunpoint. The intruder is angry investor Kyle Budwell (Jack O’Connell), who lost everything after the crash of high tech stock that Gates promoted on his show. Broadcast on live TV, the deadly stand off sees Lee and his producer Patty (Julia Roberts) work against the clock to uncover the truth behind the crash. While not necessarily a critical flop,
the reviews for the film have been fairly mediocre. The less than perfect execution is pretty disappointing considering Clooney and Roberts are at the helm and the film deals with some very timely issues. Movie review site Rotten Tomatoes praised the casting choices and the story, but found the approach a little muddled at times. Along with the big names on the screen there’s another big name behind the scenes with Jodie Foster taking on directing duties for the film. ‘Money Monster’ is Foster’s first directing role since 2011’s ‘The Beaver’, where she directed and starred alongside Mel Gibson. ‘Money Monster’ is available in store and online now.
CINEMA The Secret Life of Pets Rated G // KATE REID
The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo By Amy Schumer // KATE REID
Amy Schumer has flexed her comedy muscles on stage, on her TV show ‘Inside Amy Schumer’, and in the film ‘Trainwreck’. Now the comedy star is tackling a whole new medium with the release of The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo. Amy’s debut book is a collection of personal essays that address a wide range of themes, including her father’s battle with multiple sclerosis, being an introvert and what it’s like being ‘new money’. When writing about your life there’s always a risk of coming across a little self obsessed. But Amy manages to put the ego aside and tell her story in a real, and often self-deprecating way.

Ever wondered what your beloved pet gets up to when you leave the house? This is the premise for the new film ‘The Secret Life of Pets’, which hits cinemas this weekend. Created by the people who made ‘Despicable Me’, the film centres on Max
(Louis C.K.), a terrior who is living the good life in New York. But things change when his owner adopts a giant canine named Duke (Eric Stonestreet), who Max doesn’t get along with. While on a walk the pair get picked up by animal control, but before they end up at the pound Max and Duke are saved by a rebellious bunny called Snowball (Kevin Hart). In exchange for their freedom Max and Duke are asked to join Snowball’s gang of abandoned pets who are out to hunt
down the humans who have wronged them. The cast includes Ellie Kemper, Albert Brooks and Dana Carvey, and has so far attracted mostly positive critical reviews. If you love animals, and cute-as-pie animation, then you won’t want to miss this flick. ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ is currently showing at Hoyts Penrith. Shoe donations make a huge impact St Marys Village thanks those who took part
St Marys Village has helped to collect over 12,000 shoe donations, alongside 13 Mirvac Retail Centres across Australia, with new community charity initiative Share My Shoes. The funds raised from the sale of these shoes through The Smith Family stores nationwide will go towards The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program. The program provides educational support to disadvantaged young Australians. St Marys Village Marketing Manager, Rebecca Carrig, said they were proud to be a part of the initiative. “We are thrilled to have been a part of Share My Shoes,” she said. “Being able to work with our local community and see the amount of support through donations – which topped 350 was a momentous achievement for all of us here at St Marys Village.” The Smith Family’s Head of Fundraising, Rosie Simpson, said Share My Shoes was a great initiative to raise awareness of how The Smith Family’s retail operations support the education of disadvantaged young people in Australia. Media personality and host of Channel Ten’s ‘Studio 10’, Sarah Harris (pictured), is an ambassador for The Smith Family.

LIFE & STYLE PENRITH’S MOST RESPECTED LINE-UP OF EXPERTS ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
Hasty remarks or sudden actions could land you in a heap of hot water, especially at work, school or while travelling. Words have the ability to hurt or heal, so choose your comments and conversations wisely. And avoid making a rash decision, as you don’t have all the relevant information yet. The weekend stars boost your independent streak, and fire up your desire for freedom and adventure. But they also stir up your blunt and bossy side. Strive to be a diplomatic daredevil!
Joanne Madeline
Moore
HOROSCOPES
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
Bulls are usually slow, steady and considered. Not this week, when Uranus revs up your latent impulsive streak (especially when it comes to love). The Lunar Eclipse and retro Mercury also shine a bright spotlight on how well you communicate with others – specifically a child, teenager, parent, lover or friend. Inspiration for the week comes from actress Jada Pinkett Smith, “My belief is that communication is the best way to create strong relationships.”
GEMINI
MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
When it comes to controversial conversations, keep your cool and avoid the temptation to over-talk and over-react. You can’t control what others say but you can control your response. So state your point of view calmly and clearly, and then move on. There could also be some tension between shining brightly at work and fulfilling all of your responsibilities at home. Remember, if anyone can juggle and multi-task, it’s a versatile and nimble Gemini!
CANCER
JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
Weekly posts at www.BohoAstro.com www.twitter.com/JoMadelineMoore Copyright Joanne Madeline Moore 2016
This week you may experience mood swings and emotional dramas, as a relationship with a relative or friend flares up. If you keep the lines of communication open, then the storm in a tea cup will soon blow over. When it comes to work and business matters, don’t play it too safe. Taking a calculated risk could turn out surprisingly well. However, if you hesitate for too long, you’ll miss lucky opportunities when they come along.
LEO
JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
Lively Lions are in the mood to be rash! Making a snappy decision may seem like a good idea but it could also backfire badly. And impulsive actions could even lead to an accident so pace yourself. It will also be very easy to say the wrong thing to the wrong person (especially involving money matters). So think twice before you blurt out something that you later regret. You need to be a clever and cautious Cat, as you consider situations carefully before you pounce.
VIRGO
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
Virgos are such perfectionists but with retrograde Mercury squaring Mars, and a loopy Lunar Eclipse things won’t run smoothly this week, especially involving relationships. If you adapt to changing circumstances, and accept mistakes and misunderstandings with good grace, then you’ll manage just fine. And you might even learn something of great value! As Beyonce (a fellow Virgo) says, “If everything was perfect, you would never learn and you would never grow.”
LIBRA
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
The Lunar Eclipse lights up your daily routine zone, and Uranus revs up your experimental side. So look for the joy in the everyday; and the magical in the mundane. And the celestial message is to favour imagination over pure logic; and a sense of wonder over comfortable complacency. Your motto for the moment is from birthday great, writer Roald Dahl, “The greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
Early in the week you’re in the mood for a spontaneous spending spree – as long as you can afford it. Getting yourself further into debt is a just recipe for disaster. By all means have fun shopping but don’t break the bank! You can also expect a chaotic time as you attempt to make plans with a parent, child, teenager or friend. You’re keen to draw up a to-do list of essential tasks that need to be done. But you need to be flexible enough to change the list.
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
If you expect work matters to proceed at a cracking pace then you’ll be disappointed. Everything will take longer than expected, as retrograde Mercury muddles proceedings and the Lunar Eclipse provides distracting detours along the way. A pressing domestic problem could also demand your time and attention. With your ruler Jupiter in your hopes and wishes zone, have you drawn up a list of your goals for the future? You can’t hit a target if you haven’t got one!
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Have you been burning the midnight oil and now you’re suffering from burnout? Or have you been running around on auto-pilot, making regrettable remarks and careless slip-ups? With Mars and Saturn hibernating in your solitude zone (and an unsettling Lunar Eclipse) it’s the perfect week to go AWOL as you slip into hermit mode, down-size your social life, or organise a digital detox. Spending quality time on your own (for some overdue R & R) is absolutely essential at the moment.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
This week Neptune, retrograde Mercury and the Lunar Eclipse scramble your financial antennae. So it’s not a good time to go on a shopping spree or lend money to others as you’re liable to make financial decisions based on your emotions, which are fluctuating under the full moonbeams. Study, education or social networking will expand your world on the weekend. All types of travel are also favoured, as you extend your usual horizons and venture into new territory.
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
Don’t expect everyone to sing your praises at work, Pisces. Some colleagues just want to know you can get the job done competently and on time. Friday night’s Lunar Eclipse increases your creative, spiritual and compassionate side. But it can also contribute to feelings of confusion and self-doubt. Be inspired by Jada Pinkett-Smith, “I do a lot of reading, meditating and praying to stay as grounded as I can be in this crazy world.”

our meat. Banana and pineapple in particular take on a delicious caramelised coating when cooked on a grill. Homemade shish kebabs are another delicious option, as is seafood which is the perfect summer protein and is packed full of heart friendly omega-3 fatty acids. Rice paper rolls These are hands down one of my favourite meals
to make during the warmer months. They’re easy to put together, versatile, nutritious and they taste amazing. Rice paper rolls and vermicelli noodles can be found in the Asian foods aisle, and then it’s as simple as choosing your favourite fillings. Prawns, chicken and tofu all work well as a protein source and for the salad component try avocado, cucumber, carrot and leafy greens. Add mint, coriander and sweet chilli sauce and you have the perfect Asian inspired meal. Salads After a winter full of cooked vegetables the warmer weather tends to have us craving salads. Forget the typical lettuce, tomato and cucumber combination, and instead consider using nuts, cheeses, herbs, noodles, couscous, dried fruits, or make a warm salad with beef, chicken or prawn. Salads are perfect for experimenting with new vegetables, and one of my current favourites is red cabbage, which offers a pop of colour and is packed full of vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium and fibre – just to name a few. Remember different coloured vegetables offer different nutrient profiles, so the more colourful your salad the better.

RELIGION
Friends are catching up; the conversation goes like this, “How you’re going?” “Flat out!” “Yeah,” comes the reply, “So full on! Don’t know where the days are going!” How many times have you heard this? How many times have you said this! Yet, this feeling is common. The pace of life is busier, days filled with all manner of things. And even if you’re able to have time off, no sooner are you back into it, saying, “I don’t know where the days are going!” The Bible’s book of Psalms

strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow for they quickly pass and we fly away.” While grim, it is true to our experience, life over before we know it. Is there hope? Our hope is to deliberately slow down. Moses prays, asking God; “Teach us to number our days aright that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” He calls out to God; “Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.” Moses prays asking God to not let our days fly by without taking time to walk each day with God in mind; knowing God’s eternal love shown in Jesus, experiencing joy and contentment because of God’s kindness to us. Why don’t you pray this way now?

Well that’s it; another winter done. The arrival of spring means warmer weather and a change from hearty stews and soups to fresh, vibrant meals and cooking outdoors. To celebrate the start of spring here’s a few of my favourite meals for the warmer months. Shoulder pain presentations are a common complaint in a clinical setting and some research suggests of the individuals that have new episodes of shoulder pain and that do not seek treatment: • 70 per cent will still have pain after six weeks. • 50 per cent will still have pain after six months. • 40 per cent will still have pain after one year. At OnePointHealth we pride ourselves on an accurate diagnosis and correlating these with specific impairments to ensure you get a targeted treatment approach.
Management of shoulder pain
Toby Hudson is head of sports medicine at OnePointHealth 4732 5188 onepointhealth.com.au
1. Exclude involvement of the cervical spine (neck). 2. Is the shoulder stiff and painful? Test external rotation, must have 50 per cent range of motion. 3. Is the shoulder weak and painful? Look at pain with resisted tests. 4. Is the shoulder unstable and painful? There may be increased range of
motion and apprehension to perform certain movements. 5. Can we get the patient to reproduce the pain with a movement? We then use this as our baseline test. A stiff and painful shoulder This leads a clinician to the two most common complaints that lead to shoulder stiffness and these are osteoarthritis and frozen shoulder. Weak and painful shoulder Rotator cuff injury is the leading cause of a weak and painful shoulder. These injuries encompass rotator cuff tendinopathy, degeneration, partial thickness tears and full thickness tears. An unstable and painful shoulder Shoulder pain with feelings of an unstable joint will usually mean you have a condition called glenohumeral instability. Take home message Therapeutic exercise is often the most supported approach for painful shoulder conditions, particularly rotator cuff injuries and shoulder instability. A good clinician should find the impairments of your shoulder pain, and then direct specific interventions towards them. Impairments might include weakness, loss of range of motion, pain, muscle endurance and coordination of movement.
This year’s MTV Video Music Awards was an inspiring event for fashion with striking killer red carpet looks and daring on stage performance outfits. The annual ceremony never ceases to amaze being a star studded celebration of pop culture icons. Beyoncé and her beautiful little daughter Blue Ivy wore matching glam gowns with Beyoncé featuring ice blue couture feathers. In true Beyoncé form the celebrity showed off by having several outfit changes during the night tying in with her

feminine take on pantsuits. Amber Rose chose to make a statement by flashing skin in a Lacey black bra under a low cut classic black blazer and matching wide leg pants. Accessorising with red lips and stiletto nails adding glamour with her reflective mirror sunglasses of course. Cassie had standout hair in a fluoro yellow blonde bob and went for a golden look featuring trophy-worthy gold metallic pants and a grey blazer with gold buttons, opting for no top underneath she wore instead several delicate bodychains. This year was all about Rihanna seeing as she won the Vanguard award, lucky for us that meant she graced the stage with several performances. An all pink theme for one had Rihanna and her backup dancers all wearing the baby pink colour, complete with her signature thigh high boots she loves to wear on tour!

Giants forward Jeremy Cameron can’t wait to play his first Finals game NATHAN TAYLOR
t’s the dream final all of Sydney had been craving and this weekend local AFL fans will finally get to see the GWS Giants and Sydney Swans go up against each other in their biggest battle yet. Sydney will be divided when AFL’s hottest two sides go head to head at ANZ Stadium at 3.20pm this Saturday, in front of more than 60,000 people. The occasion will be a special one for Giants supporters in particular as it will
I
mark the first time the club has played in the post-season since their inception in 2012. Giants forward Jeremy Cameron, who joined the club in their debut season, said this Saturday’s blockbuster will do wonders for the sport in NSW. “It’s fantastic for football in NSW to have both sides on one of the biggest stages go head to head,” he said. “The guys are looking forward to training well and then getting down to ANZ Stadium to have a run around. “It’s building into an awesome game and I hope the crowd really gets out and about.
They are expecting 60,000, which is huge for football in NSW.” The Giants, along with the rest of the AFL’s top eight teams, enjoyed last weekend off due to the AFL’s controversial football-free weekend, which was implemented to rest players before the Finals. 23-year-old Cameron said it was rather “strange” having the weekend off. “It was a bit strange for us but this time of year we (Giants) are usually done and dusted anyway,” he said. “It was good to have a break but the boys are ready to go now.” If the Giants are to advance to the
Preliminary Final, they are going to have to put in a mighty performance against the Swans – who finished the regular season as minor premiers. Cameron said the side will take a lot of confidence out of hammering their crosscity rivals 105-63 earlier this year. “I think we can take a lot of confidence out of not only that game but other games throughout the season,” he said. “We know when we play our best footy we can really take it up to anyone. It’s all about bringing all that together as well as the things we’ve learnt throughout the season.”

Fox returns to the water in style Just weeks after taking home Olympic bronze, Jess is back at work and blitzing her competitors NATHAN TAYLOR
fter picking up Olympic bronze in Rio, Jessica Fox has returned to the whitewater in stunning fashion – blitzing a world-class field to win canoe slalom gold in Prague. Competing at the fourth ICF World Cup, 22-year-old Fox finished almost seven seconds ahead of the Czech Republic’s Katerina Hoskova, with Great Britain’s Mallory Franklin coming in third. Speaking after the race, the two-time Olympic medallist said she was glad she made the decision to keep paddling straight after the Rio Games. “It’s partly the frustration of unfinished business,” Fox said. “I hadn’t planned on doing the last two races, but after Rio I decided I still wanted to paddle and race, plus I love Prague and haven’t raced in Tacen in a couple of years and that is one of the most challenging races. “I also wanted to get back in the C1 and catch up with all my paddling friends before we all part for the year.” The Leonay resident has shown a liking for the Prague course, winning the C1 world title back in 2013.

Fox’s run last weekend was error free, and moves her into third placing on the overall C1 World Cup table ahead of this weekend’s 2016 final in Tacen, Slovenia. While C1 was not on the Olympic program for women in Rio, it will be introduced at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. It’s understood Fox is very keen on contesting both events, to give her the best chance at finally winning Olympic gold. Fox said she has not spent long thinking about her recent K1 bronze in Rio, which followed her silver as an 18-year-old in London in 2012. “I move on fairly quickly,” she admitted. “I have had time now to reflect on my race and I’m really proud to have achieved a second Olympic medal. Our sport is tough, and the weather conditions were pretty hard to deal with on race day. “I feel that I was really well prepared, fit and paddling really well in the lead up to the race. I had no regrets. I guess my only frustration is that I wasn’t able to unleash it all during the final and felt I had to hold back a little because of the wind.” Fox also contested the K1 semi-finals in Prague but surprisingly failed to reach the final.

Around the grounds SWIMMING: Local swim schools Nepean Aquatic Centre and Eva Bory’s Swim School were the proud recipients of the Australian Swim Schools Associations National Excellence Award in the category of SAFER Swimming at a dinner on the Gold Coast last month. The awards, which were attended by swim school operators from all around Australia and overseas, plus swimming personalities including Dr Laurie Lawrence, also paid tribute to swimming legend Forbes Carlile who passed away recently. Presented by four-time Olympic gold medallist Libby Trickett, the SAFER Swimming award recognised both schools’ mission to spread the SAFER swimming message throughout the local community, through a combination of swimming lessons, community engagement, and education.

AUSSIE RULES: After enjoying one of their best seasons on record, which included a 15 game winning streak, the Penrith Rams have been officially eliminated from the AFL Sydney Division 2 competition. Penrith lost to the North Shore Bombers 53-41 during last Sunday night’s preliminary final at Blacktown.

CRICKET: Reigning Women’s Big Bash League champions, the Sydney Thunder, have extended the contract of head coach Jo Broadbent. The former Australian vice-captain further enhanced her reputation as one of Australia’s most successful coaches after the Thunder finished top of the WBBL01 table, before beating city rivals, the Sydney Sixers, at the MCG earlier this year. “It was a straight-forward decision and we are very pleased that Jo has chosen to continue as head coach and take on the challenge of defending our title,” Thunder General Manager, Nick Cummins said.

t was double premiership success for the Penrith Rovers Football Club after their Premier League and Premier League Reserves team went through the recent Nepean Football Association season undefeated. Established in 1999, the Penrith Rovers FC is one of the youngest and smallest clubs in
I
the local competition but that hasn’t stopped them from being one of the most successful. Penrith’s Premier League team won 18 games this season along with three draws, while their Reserves team also went undefeated with 19 wins and two draws. Penrith Rovers Treasurer, Ray McKeown, said it was an amazing effort for both teams to come out on top. “We’re only a relatively young club but
we’ve got a lot of players who have been around for a while – some of them even play in State League,” he said. “When we started in 1999, we only had one team – an over 35’s team – now we have 27 teams including 21 junior teams and six senior teams.” But success for the Penrith Rovers is nothing new, with the Premier League team winning seven out of the past nine seasons.

Previous segments filmed were with brands such as NASA, Volkswagen, Dr. Martens and Bentley. during February 2016 and sporadically later throughout the rest of the world. Elite Caravans were the only caravan manufacturer to be approached to feature in this global segment. The episode detailed the manufacturing process from start to finish, highlighting the unique manufacturing line of Elite’s luxury caravans. Owners Adrian Cappola and Peter Smith were delighted.
“Appearing in the Discovery Channel’s series ‘How They Do It’ is a real honour, especially considering we’re the only caravan manufacturer in the world to appear on it,” Peter Smith said. Adrian Cappola added: “It feels like real recognition of the job we do here.” “It’s the perfect insight into just how much work we put in to every Elite Caravan to ensure it’s of the highest possible quality,” he added.

New powerful generators are a must-see at this year’s Expo in Penrith usband and wife duo Trevor and Kerry Vaughan from Ravco Australia are heading to Penrith for this weekend’s Caravan, Camping and Holiday Expo. A family owned and operated company, the Vaughans travel across Australia from Perth, down to Adelaide, through Melbourne and up the east coast selling their bigger Ravco generators for all camping enthusiasts with a bigger rig. Kerry Vaughan said the pair love their lifestyle. “Travelling across Australia allows us to stay in some remote locations and meet so many new like-minded people,” she said. “We literally live the lifestyle we promote through our generators all year round.” While they’re still building their business, Ravco Australia has been selling
H
caravan and camping accessories since 2009 before they came up with the idea to create a larger style generator. “We discovered people were having issues with their smaller generators so we went looking for someone to manufacture a larger unit for us,” Mrs Vaughan said. “They’re still portable enough for people to take with them if they need to lift in and out but we recommend they go on a slide if possible.” If you want to find out more about Ravco Australia, visit their website at www.ravcoaustralia.com.au. You can also check out the generators for yourself this weekend, Friday, September 9 to Sunday, September 11, at Penrith Panthers Exhibition Centre.
