THE HEARTBEAT OF PENRITH
Early risers They’re the new faces of breakfast television – at least they hope to be. Channel 10 will have another attempt at the breakfast TV market later this year when it launches ‘Wake Up’, and this week its hosts Natasha Exelby, James Mathison and Natarsha Belling hit the ground in Penrith as part of the show’s publicity blitz. The trio spoke to locals at the Penrith Markets, even getting into the spirit by buying a couple of punnets of locally produced strawberries.
Drug haul in car boot Cannabis, amphetamines and $11k in cash discovered by police
A
lmost seven kilograms of cannabis and $11,000 in cash was discovered in a car pulled over by police at Orchard Hills on Tuesday night. Police made the stunning discovery at around 6.40pm on Tuesday night after the Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad Highway Patrol stopped a four-wheel-drive on Mamre Road. “A search of the vehicle led to the seizure of 6.9kg of cannabis in the boot of the vehicle,” Police said in a statement.
“Police also located more than $11,000 cash and about 30g of amphetamine in the car.” The driver and sole occupant of the car, a 40-year-old Rebels nominee, was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station where he was charged by Strike Force Raptor offic ers with two counts of ‘supply prohibited drug greater than an indictable quantity’, and one count of dealing with the proceeds of crime. He was given conditional bail, and will appear at Penrith Local Court in late October to answer the charges.

Fowler ready to lead Penrith Mayoral election goes as planned with Fowler and Aitken elected to top jobs As we revealed last week, Ross Fowler is the new Mayor of Penrith, and he says his term in the top job will not be about political interests...

n agenda to encourage economic development, jobs growth and fi nancial viability of the Council has been set by Penrith’s new Mayor, Ross Fowler. Taking the chair on Monday evening after being elected by his Councillor colleagues, Cr Fowler was happy to accept the Mayoral Chains from outgoing Mayor Mark Davies. Cr Fowler defeated Cr Jackie Greenow for the top position eight votes to six with the support of Councillors Jim Aitken, Kevin Crameri, Bernard Bratusa, Ben Goldfi nch, Tricia Hitchen, Mark Davies and Maurice Girotto. “My focus will not only be on what happens in the next 12 months but on the years to come. We must remain fina ncially stable and increase employment opportunities,” he said. “I am looking forward to the development of a strategy for the growth of the Penrith CBD. My aim is to continue to the great work we have already started.” Cr Fowler will also instigate an investigation into alternative revenue streams to guarantee Council’s fina ncial sustainability. He thanked his wife for her support over the years and said that politics would not rule in his term.
Ross Fowler with his newly obtained Mayoral chains on Wednesday. Inset: How we broke the news that Cr Fowler would be Mayor last week.
“I am a proud member of the Liberal Party, but fi rst and foremost I am now Mayor of Penrith and will be acting in that manner as a matter of expedience,” he declared. Politics did play a part in the evening though, with Cr Marcus Cornish abstaining from the Mayoral vote –
however the two Liberal Councillors shared a handshake after the election was declared. Cr Jim Aitken was elected as Deputy Mayor, defeating Cr Greenow despite her backing from her Labor, Greens and Australia First colleagues. Cr Aitken won with the support of
Councillors Marcus Cornish, Bernard Bratusa, Tricia Hitchen, Ben Goldfinch, Mark Davies, Kevin Crameri and Ross Fowler. “Thank you to my colleagues who have shown their support for me by giving me this great honour,” Cr Aitken said on Monday night.
Davies set the bar high: Praise for outgoing Mayor from across the political spectrum
C
and their hard work in the last 12 months has certainly had a positive impact,” he said. Cr Davies almost did not contest the Council election in 2012, after serving as a Councillor since 2004, but showed that his eight years of experience had given him a strong vision for Penrith, which included activating the Nepean River Precinct. “I had a passion and a desire to see a masterplan and a vision implemented for the river precinct and I am glad that during my term as Mayor there has been progress,” he said. “It is one of the assets of Penrith that has
been under-utilised and once complete this masterplan is going to guide Penrith’s future development.” He thanked his wife Tanya and daughter Laura and extended family for their support throughout the year. Cr Davies’ colleagues then congratulated him on a successful term. “You put your heart and soul into it and have set the bar quite high – the person who follows you will have to jump,” Cr John Thain said. Other councillors commended the former Mayor on his fairness, control of meetings and strong agenda for Penrith.

Stepping down from the prestigious role on Monday evening after serving his one year term, Cr Davies reflected on his achievements. f good leadership creates a successful organisation or a positive outcome to a challenging situation, then it’s fair to say that bad leadership becomes endemic and can often emerge as the root cause of failure. Two iconic brands in Australia are at the moment in trouble because of leadership issues. They are the Australian Labor Party and the National Rugby League. Both are brands with signific ant history in Australia and both are symbolic of the roller coaster ride of success and failure. Let’s start with the ALP. As Anthony Albanese and Bill Shorten continue to work their way around the country in some sort of internal election campaign, both would know that no matter who wins, there’s a strong likelihood that neither will lead Labor to the 2016 Federal Election. A lot of water will cross under the bridge between now and then, and unless Tony Abbott proves to be a shambolic mess as Prime Minister, it is hard to see either Albanese or Shorten being the shining light that Labor desperately needs to win an election in three years. Here’s the problem – Labor stuffed up the course of time and right now is missing out on what should actually be a very prosperous time in opposition. Julia Gillard should now be leading the Labor Party for the fi rst time, and leading them to the 2016 election. No matter how successful Tony Abbott is or isn’t, I doubt he could have stopped the juggernaut of publicity and positivity that would have surrounded the possibility of Australia’s fi rst female Prime Minister being elected. Labor should have left Kevin Rudd in charge for the entirety of the last six years – he probably still would have won in 2010, and while 2013 would have been a loss, history would at least have shown stability for the party and supporters could have talked about Rudd without bursting out into laughter given the shambolic way his leadership stopstarted over the past six years. Gillard would never have had the stigma of stabbing someone in the back to get the job surrounding her, and her tenure as Opposition Leader would have been long enough for her to connect to the electorate in a way she never did.

And another thing... Can you imagine the steam that would have been coming from Scott Morrison’s ears if the previous Government had announced it would only hold weekly media briefi ngs on asylum seeker boat arrivals, and not publicly reveal when boats are turned around? His changes to the way we’re informed about the critical issue of border protection and boat arrivals are a bit rich coming from a guy who spent the best part of his time in Opposition talking to the media at every opportunity.

From The Editor’s Desk
As much as Labor will forever have the right to claim it installed Australia’s fir st female Prime Minister, it will also have to live with the fact that it stuffed it up. One gets the feeling that the next Labor Prime Minister is not yet in Parliament. As for the NRL, it faces huge challenges ahead in terms of crowd numbers and overall respect from the fans, and I struggle to see how they will do that under the leadership of Dave Smith. The Commission, which so many declared would be the greatest thing since sliced bread, has proven no better than dry toast. For so long rugby league has survived with the “she’ll be right” mentality; citing successfully overcoming the Super League war as proof that the game can come back from anything. But with TV ratings down and crowds at the point of embarrassment during the fi nals, combined with refereeing blunders and fans not feeling engaged on game days, rugby league faces an almighty challenge for relevance. Many of the issues can be overcome with a full review and overhaul of the match-day experience for fans. Food and drink prices, parking rates and the plain stupid 45 minute gap between the Holden Cup and NRL at the ground should be on top of the list of things to address. Perhaps the wider problems of the NRL are evident by the fact that they issued a media release regarding the results of an investigation into the way the Bulldogs handled the Ben Barba situation earlier this year at 2.35pm last Saturday. A cynic would think that it was a deliberate move to ensure underresourced weekend newsrooms simply let it slip through the cracks.

enrith residents will see the benefits of the WestConnex as early as 2019, according to Penrith MP Stuart Ayres. The State Government has released details of the $11.5 billion project, with the fi rst stage of construction set to be the widening of the M4 between Parramatta and Haberfield. “Th is is the largest roads transport project in Australia and overall it will take about 10 years to complete, Mr Ayres said. “However, the fi rst stage, which will commence in 2015 and be completed in 2019, is the widening of the M4 to four lanes in each direction between Church Street at Parramatta to Homebush Bay Drive. “The State Government has also announced supporting construction works which will benefit people from our end of the M4. There will be new eastbound access to Westmead and Parramatta from the M4 near Coleman Street, giving western Sydney residents better access to the Westmead Hospital precinct. For the many Penrith commuters who work in Parramatta, travelling home via the M4 will be easier with new westbound access at Church Street. The next two stages will consist of a tunnel from Haberfield to St Peters and the M5 Airport Link to St Peters, to create a total 33 kilometre stretch of highway

connecting western Sydney to the east. Mulgoa MP Tanya Davies said the West Connex will be a “game changer. “It will save motorists time by making travel easier between Sydney’s west and the east, she said. The journey from James Rouse Drive to the airport will be cut by 40 minutes,
bypassing 52 traffic lights. The savings are not without a price though. Motorists who use any part of the upgraded M4 will be charged distance based tolling of approximately $3. The entire trip to the airport would cost approximately $7. – with Ben Harmer

uch to the dismay of local businesses and online shoppers, Australia Post is increasing postal prices from
October 7. Businesses mailing documents are set to be hit, with a number of envelope charges being changed. For example, a 10 pack of registered post prepaid DL envelopes will increase from $37.05 to $39.90. Express Post envelopes are also affected, with a 10 pack of DL envelopes increasing from $54.10 to $56.10 and a 10 pack of B4 envelopes from $67.75 to $70.20. Online shopping businesses are also going to be hit, with international registered post small padded bags to increase between 95 cents and $1.25 depending on the destination. Medium padded bags will increase between $1.25 and $1.90 per package depending on the destination. Nathan Turner, Director of The Bean Doctor, a local business that sells coffee, coffee machines and accessories online, says the price hike is not welcome. “It is something that we don’t want to pay. However, Australia Post said in a statement that the price rises were necessary. “We understand that price increases are never easy for our customers, and the decision to implement these cost recovery measures is taken very seriously, the statement said. “Like many businesses, we’re operating in a challenging economic environment with increasing costs, particularly around raw materials, delivery, transport and energy. “To ensure our business is selfsustaining, we are reducing operating costs, improving network effic iencies, adjusting prices to recover our true costs, and enhancing our products. Tweet your view: @wwpenrith.

enrith Valley Chamber of Commerce has elected a new Executive Committee that will lead the organisation in a volunteer capacity over the next 12 months. President, Peter McGhee, retained his position along with Vice President, Joe Grassi. Steve Willingale will serve as Treasurer, and Gina Field as Secretary. The Committee will be Rob Glascott, Linda Kemp, Wayne Young, Wayne Moloney and Rob Drage. “On behalf of all the members we offer our congratulations to these members who have put themselves forward to offer their guidance and services to the Chamber,” said CEO, Jill Woods. Those who chose not to stand again this year due to their additional workloads were Maralyn Kastel, Gai Hawthorn and John Capes.

The Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce’s new Executive Committee.
“The Chamber thanks each of these members for the generosity of time and commitment to the organisation,” Ms Woods said. Ms Woods has encouraged local business people to get to know the new
Executive: “Remember these members are your collective representative voice. Understanding your issues and needs is very important to this organisation so we remain on track heading in the right direction.”

spate of recent break and enter offences across western Sydney has prompted police to take action. Police are calling on public assistance to help locate a vehicle, allegedly involved in break and enters at a string of hair dressing salons, tobacconists and newsagents in Penrith, St Marys and
other neighbouring suburbs. Strike Force Kemerton is investigating at least 10 connected incidents that have occurred since July this year where cigarettes, hair products and cash have been stolen. Police are yet to make any arrests but have confi rmed they are searching for the pictured vehicle. - Katherine Tweed
It is a privilege to represent Penrith for a second time as Mayor. I’m committed to best positioning this City to further realise its potential and deliver greater opportunity for our residents. I will support and advocate for transport and other vital infrastructure but, as those of you facing long commutes know, there is no substitute for bringing jobs closer to home to reduce strain on families and to support a better lifestyle. As a leader, I seek to work alongside government and key regional bodies, including the University of Western Sydney and the Nepean Hospital, to leverage the intellectual, physical and political capital that will drive the growth and investment needed to support local job creation. We need to maintain, or even further improve our current good level of fi nancial sustainability, so when opportunities arise we have the resources ready to take advantage of these.

E
mergency workers were greeted with horrific scenes when they responded to reports of a serious crash at Erskine Park just before dawn on Wednesday. The two car accident forced the closure
of Roper Road in both directions for much of the morning peak period. The serious nature of the accident meant the NSW Police Crash Investigation Unit had to be called in. The accident happened with such force that wreckage from the crash was strewn across both the northbound and southbound lanes of Roper Road.
One person was taken to hospital as a result of the crash, but when the Weekender went to print late on Wednesday, his condition was unknown, though understood not to be life threatening. “It didn’t look good,” one driver who saw the accident said on the Weekender’s Facebook page on Wednesday.
It wasn’t the only serious accident in the local area on Wednesday. Just after 2pm, emergency services were called to a crash on Mamre Road at St Marys, near the M4 Motorway. Two southbound lanes were closed for some time as a result of the accident. Keep up to date with local traffic : www. facebook.com/westernweekender.

The design concepts are now being tested and will be installed over just one week, later this year. The trial park aims to better define the retail core of High Street, activating our CBD and creating economic opportunity. It will be a more inviting, people-friendly space enticing visitors to discover what is new and what is on offer from a unique mix of eateries, shops and businesses.

Penrith at “design forefront” But will new ‘triangle park’ cause traffic chaos in the CBD?
T
CASSANDRA O CONNOR
he western end of High Street is set to be transformed into a park in October, following an intensive consultation meeting last week with community members. As part of the Penrith CBD Masterplan, a ‘triangle park’ at the end of High Street, which would require the closure of the High Street and Henry Street intersection, has been planned for. Council recently decided to undertake a 12 month trial of the park to test whether it would adversely impact traffic flows through the CBD, how effective it is in activating urban space and if it stimulates retail activity. Last Thursday, September 19, Cr Mark Davies met with leading US urban designer, Mike Lydon, as well as Council’s Director Place Partners Kylie Legge and Penrith CBD Corporation CEO Gai Hawthorn to discuss park designs with the community. “Tactical Urbanism is a cutting edge place-making tool that allows ideas to be tested and benefits to accrue in the short-term while more formal resources are gathered and organised for long-term investment,” Mr Lydon said. “Th is new process is being used to develop the new park and it puts Penrith at the forefront of Australian community design.” Cr Davies said it was powerful for business and community to design the transformation, which would create

economic opportunity and draw more people into the heart of the CBD. “Penrith City Council’s ‘Make My Park Pop’ initiative will activate a fun and
interactive gateway park for residents, visitors and workers in Penrith’s CBD. It will shape a culturally-stimulating urban environment supporting a night time
economy, business opportunities and new investment,” he said. You can follow the transformation at penrithcity.nsw.gov.au/MakeMyParkPop.
Penrith City Council and Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) are introducing a 40km/h speed limit on Queen Street due to a high number of pedestrians on this road. The 40km/h speed limit will be clearly signposted. Penrith City Council and RMS and are jointly funding this road safety initiative.

Why a lower speed limit?
10
Lower vehicle speeds result in fewer pedestrian injuries and deaths. If a vehicle travelling at 50km/h hits a pedestrian, it is twice as likely to kill the pedestrian than if it was travelling at 40km/h. Driving at lower speeds improves a driver’s ability to stop and avoid hitting a pedestrian, and if pedestrian crashes do occur they are less severe, especially for children and elderly pedestrians. Where does the new speed limit apply? The 40 km/h speed limit will be signposted on sections of the following roads in St Marys Town Centre where there is high pedestrian activity and significant traffic volumes: Queen Street, Station Street, Philip Street, East Lane and short lengths of Gidley Street, Chapel Street, King Street, Crana Street, Charles Hackett Drive, Belar Street and Nariel Street, St Marys. The 40km/h speed limit is enforceable and normal enforcement procedures will apply. So when you drive on these roads with high levels of pedestrian activity look out for the new 40 km/h speed signs. Please drive at 40 km/h and help improve local road safety.

Police blitz roads during school holidays
W
ith the fi rst week of the school holidays well underway, police are urging the public to take care as they embark on longer car trips. Wearing seatbelts, keeping mobile phones out of reach and keeping to the speed limit are just a few of the rules police are encouraging drivers to adhere to but these holidays, police are focusing on making motorists aware of the consequences of driver fatigue as well. Police consider driving whilst fatigued as risk taking behaviour; behaviour that could mean the difference between life and death for local families on the roads. “Those families travelling long distances need to ensure their driver has had at least eight hours of sleep before driving, and stop every two hours on their journeys to rest, have something to eat and drink, and then continue on,” said Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner John Hartley. “It is better to take your time and arrive safely than risking your life or the life of an innocent bystander... If you are feeling tired it is imperative to pull over.” Although this year there have been 28 fewer deaths on NSW roads than this time last year, police launched ‘Operation Phoenix’ on Friday last week, hoping to ensure families arrive at their destinations safely. Operation Phoenix, assisted by Transport for NSW funding, is a high visibility Highway Patrol operation, “which will result in school holiday drivers seeing Highway Patrol officers on our roads for extended periods”. “Speeding, drink or drug driving, tiredness, driver distraction and mobile phone use are all major contributing factors to road crashes and fatalities in NSW,” Assistant Commissioner Hartley said.

Campaign aims to ensure sports fans have a ‘Plan B’ for getting home
W
ith tens of thousands of sporting fans expected to flock to the NRL fi nals this weekend and with the cricket and soccer season ahead, the NSW Government is making its point clear when it comes to drink-driving: Have a ‘Plan B’. Sports Minister Gabrielle Upton and Parliamentary Secretary for Roads, Penrith MP Stuart Ayres, this week unveiled a new partnership to promote the NSW Government’s ‘Plan B’ anti drinkdriving campaign throughout the remainder of the NRL finals. Minister Upton announced ‘Plan B’ signage had been installed in key locations at ANZ Stadium, to provide fans with a reminder of choosing options other than driving home when they’ve been drinking. “The signage will be in place for the NRL fi nals starting with this Friday’s South Sydney vs Manly elimination fi nal at ANZ Stadium, and remain on display for the Monster Jam event, Bon Jovi concert, Twenty20 Big Bash cricket tournament and February’s Twenty20 international cricket match,” Ms Upton said. “If you have a drink while you are out, you need a safe ‘Plan B’. Catch public transport, call a taxi or ring a friend to come and get you. There’s no excuse for getting behind the wheel.” ‘Plan B’ campaign material is already prominent at Penrith, including in bathrooms at Penrith Stadium. Mr Ayres said it was particularly important to get the message through to young males.

Plan to stop senseless deaths
Parliamentary Secretary for Roads Stuart Ayres, Sports Minister Gabrielle Upton and ANZ Stadium’s Daryl Kerry this week.
“Young men – like many who attend ANZ Stadium for the biggest sporting matches – are tragically over-represented in drink-driving deaths, so we hope they listen to the message, because it could save their life or someone else’s,” he said. “In NSW, drink-driving kills more than 50 people and injures more than 1,000
every year. 80 per cent of the drink-drivers involved in fatal crashes are men.” Daryl Kerry, ANZ Stadium Managing Director, said public transport was the best ‘Plan B’ possible when getting around this summer. “We always encourage fans to get to the Stadium using public transport, which is
especially easy for big games when every fan’s match ticket doubles as a train, ferry and bus ticket,” he said. “ANZ Stadium is well-serviced by trains from Olympic Park Station and buses to all corners of Sydney. If you catch public transport, you immediately have your ‘Plan B’ if you wish to have a few drinks.”

Women in Cabinet
Merit or just his turn?
There is a lot that I do not understand about the debate surrounding only one woman being in Tony Abbott’s cabinet. The fi rst is that nobody ever seems to name who they believe should be out, and who should be there instead. The second is why women feel that having a token number of women in Cabinet is better than being selected on merit? Surely nobody is actually suggesting Tony Abbott deliberately created a boys’ club? The last Government had a record number of women in Cabinet – and we all know how well that went down! Rob Clarke, via email . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Shouldn’t the Mayor be selected on merit? It would appear that Mr Fowler is getting the job because it is his turn. The arrogance of the Liberals is astounding. Craig Cochrane, via Facebook . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
A plea to all
I write on behalf of Royal Life Saving Society to ask your readers to help us reduce the terrible toll of drownings occurring across NSW. Figures show in the last decade, 67 children aged under five have drowned in NSW swimming pools. We can all do more to stop these tragedies. Royal Life Saving is working with the NSW Government on the Be Pool Safe campaign. Anyone with a backyard pool is being urged to take action and to spend just three minutes of their time registering their pool – for free – on the website: www.swimmingpoolregister. nsw.gov.au. What we do know is that there are 340,000 pools across the state. In some areas as many as one in two pools do not meet adequate safety standards. The statistics are horrific. Too many innocent young lives are being lost. Too many families are impacted in a terrible way as a direct result. For safety’s sake, please fi ll out the new register if you have a pool. David Macallister CEO, Royal Life Saving NSW
Mayoral selection
Last Friday’s front page of the Weekender may have been a good coup for the paper, but not so for democracy (Your new Mayor, Western Weekender September 20). Why is it that the Councillors pick the Mayor, and not us? Why is it that it changes every year? I presume it is to keep particular interests happy. I see this as a really badly designed way to reward people for no other reason than that they’ve built up enough power and profile within their particular sector of the party they represent. Let Penrith’s people pick the Mayor! Steve Kidman, via email . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

On the ground: Liberals meet with Centrelink and Medicare
M
inister for Human Services, Senator Marise Payne, this week made her fi rst offic ial visit to Penrith Centrelink and Medicare branches, meeting staff and outlining the Department’s plans to improve efficiency and customer service. Minister Payne was accompanied on the visit by Secretary of the Department of Human Services, Kathryn Campbell and Member-elect for Lindsay, Fiona Scott. It was the fi rst sign in the local area that the newly elected Federal Government is on the ground, listening to concerns.
“Today was a great opportunity to see fi rst-hand the important work undertaken by Centrelink and Medicare staff on the front line,” Minister Payne said. “The Department of Human Services has a number of important commitments, including delivery of the Paid Parental Leave Scheme and delivery of the Job Commitment Bonus to help those unemployed more than 12 months to find a permanent job. “We will also be continuing the transition to digital service delivery through a single, secure, online platform, in order to process payments faster.”

he construction of a new hazardous and restricted waste management facility in St Marys has been given the go-ahead. Worth Recycling, a privately owned company that has been operating in the waste management sector for over 30 years, is expanding its operations in Charles Street, in the Dunheved Industrial Precinct. The Sydney West Joint Regional Planning Panel has approved the facility. “There are three types of waste, hazardous, restricted and general. The St Marys facility will cater for hazardous and restricted wastes... this includes oily sludges from refi neries, which there is more demand from,” Company Director, George Cooper said. The board of the Planning Panel, comprised of Paul Mitchell and Bruce McDonald as well as Penrith City Council representatives Barry Husking and Mark Davies, unanimously supported the development. However, Councillor Prue Car has expressed her discontent with the development’s approval. “While the details about what sort of hazardous waste this facility will be licenced to take are not yet clear, I’ll be fighting to ensure any plans will be the subject of extensive community consultation,” she said. “It’s disappointing that once again, the Penrith area will be the site of another one of Sydney’s waste facilities. It seems that every time a new dump needs to be built, it’s lumped on our community.” Mr Cooper said that the facility should be operational before the end of the year, with an Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) licence to be issued shortly. “EPA has reviewed the information provided and has determined that it is able to issue a licence for the proposal,” said Greg Thomas, EPA Manager of Hazardous Materials Advice, Hazardous Materials, Chemicals and Radiation. One of the core objectives of the development is to provide a facility that is able to process and immobilise large volumes of contaminated material in response to emergency environmental incidents involving contaminated soils or water. Once operational, the new facility will have an annual intake of 77,400 tonnes of waste per annum, including 47,000 tonnes of drill muds for chemical treatment and 12,000 tonnes of hazardous soils.

Enough is enough Time has come to get tough on graffiti vandals
COUNCIL SNAPSHOT Krispy Kreme at Penrith Panthers could be set for a new look. The business has put in a development application for a decor upgrade to the dining room and terrace area. New furniture and fi nishes are planned, with a new main counter and blade structure to the terrace. The proposal is to improve the amenity of the site. The cost will be in excess of $250,000. Penrith City Council has approved the construction of 16 double storey brick veneer dwellings in Jordan Springs. The homes, located along Lakeside Parade, are being built by Edgewater Homes and are expected to cost over $3.5 million. Residents can now have their say on a proposal for a waste management station owned by Anyfi l Skip Bins and associated light industry in Lee Holm Drive, St Marys. Skip bins would be brought to the facility, typically containing construction waste, to be sorted. The waste would then be transferred to a recycling depot or landfil l. Tough Mudder looks likely to be held at Fernhill Estate in Mulgoa on the weekend of November 30 and December 1, 2013. The event is an obstacle course, with 20 obstacles located over an 18 kilometre layout. Over 12,000 participants are expected to attend with some 3,000 spectators over the two days. The application to hold the event is awaiting Council approval. Director of PricewaterhouseCoopers, Dennis Banicevic, gave a presentation to Council on Monday evening where he outlined the company’s independent report into Council’s fi nances. He said that Council is “actually in a sound and stable position”. He said that it is important that Council strikes a balance between a good fi nancial position and having quality infrastructure, which they have done.

he State Government is cracking down on graffit i offences, as vandals turn to more destructive graffiti tools, according to State Londonderry MP, Bart Bassett. The Graffiti Control Amendment Bill, which is currently being considered by the parliament creates a two-tier offence of marking property without consent of the owner. Whilst spray can paint and permanent markers are common graffiti implements, other methods such as acid etching are becoming more common and causing greater damage. “It is an ongoing battle that is being fought day in day out and it is costing businesses, councils, communities and the State Government a lot of money,” Mr Bassett said. “We must ensure that we have a legislative framework that gives councils, police and courts the tools to be able to combat the perpetrators of graffit i vandalism in all its forms.” He said the proposed amendments provide for a basic offence where a person intentionally marks premises or property without the owner or occupier’s consent; and an aggravated offence where a person does so using a graffiti implement or in a way that means the mark is not readily removed. The basic offence provides a maximum penalty of a fi ne of $440, while an aggravated offence allows for a maximum of a $2,200 fi ne or 12 months imprisonment. “NSW Police Force statistics and reports indicate that from 2005-10 there were 66,000 reported graffit i incidents. Of them only 7,596 or just over 11 per cent, were brought to the courts for prosecution,” Mr Bassett said. “It is time that we clamp down on these vandals in

esidents are being reminded to register their swimming pools by October 29 as Penrith Council and the State Government step up regulations. Recent amendments to the Swimming Pools Act 1992 specify that all pools must be registered and that local Councils must run a compliance and inspection program on pool fencing. It is estimated that the Penrith LGA has approximately 20,000 properties with privately owned swimming pools and spa pools. Penrith Council has developed a swimming pool barrier inspection program and is asking for feedback from the community. According to a Council report, “An initial inspection fee of $150 will be
payable by the swimming pool owner at the time of making an application or request to Council for a certific ate. Where a re-inspection is necessary, a once only re-inspection fee of $100 will be payable by the swimming pool owner. Michael Morris, head of the Samuel Morris Foundation that advocates for pool safety for children, welcomes the progress being made by Council and the State Government. “It is so important that residents register their pools and have them inspected because even if you don’t have kids, you never know when your family and friends might bring their children over, he said. He said that the Foundation is advocating for private swimming pools to be inspected at regular intervals. Under the current proposed system, once a pool is certified, it will only be reinspected if the property is sold.

Dong’s Sweet Thai Chicken creation takes out top honour at national pie comp

o you want to know the secret to Dong Vuong’s hugely successful pie business? He doesn’t sell a pie until it’s won an award. The “Pie Professor” at the multi-award winning La Bakehouse Café in High Street, Penrith, is so stringent with what pies are served that it can sometimes take months or years to get the recipe just right. Last week Mr Vuong was again recognised for his creativity and dedication to the pie industry. He picked up 17 out of a possible 18 medals in the 2013 Fine Food Australia Great Aussie Pie Competition, including six gold medals. “Th is time we won the most medals in the nation,” Mr Vuong said proudly. “We work very hard for our awards and I’m very glad every time I receive something.” One of the big awards of the competition was the crowning of the Gourmet Poultry Pie winner, which of course went to the decorated Mr Vuong for his Sweet Tha i Chicken Pie. The pie contains real chicken, sweet chilli and onion mixed within a chicken gravy-style sauce and is encased in the most delectable pastry you’ll ever bite into. “Th is pie has been around for a few years now and has won many awards,” Mr Vuong said. “However this pie isn’t one of our more popular pies we sell. For some reason people stick to what they know and aren’t

game enough to try something different. Hopefully people will come in and understand what I’m talking about.” Whilst in the company of Pie Professor Vuong at his High Street premises on Monday, the Weekender decided to ask the tough questions all Australians want to know about pies.
Chicken or steak? Sauce or no sauce? “That’s a difficult question to answer but I would have to go with steak instead of chicken because steak brings out the better flavours,” Mr Vuong confessed. “I would not recommended sauce, although some people will say you can’t have a pie without it, but I ask them to try a
pie without sauce and see if they agree with me. Tomato sauce is too strong for pies, all you can taste is sauce.” Mr Vuong revealed that regular beef and chunky steak pies were La Bakehouse Café’s top selling pies. Where is Penrith’s best pie? Tell us: news@westernweekender.com.au.

The man turned a corner, mounted the curb and crashed into a fence on Monfarville Street. He was breath tested at the scene, returning a positive result and taken for breath analysis. He was found to have a Blood Alcohol Concentration of 0.086, in the lower end of the mid-range. The court heard that the man had completed the traffic o ffenders program. How a Glenmore Park man is helping bring a smile to the faces of sick children
L
KATHERINE TWEED
ittle Wings began when a Glenmore Park man wanted to do his bit for the community on the odd weekend off. It has now morphed into a “full-on, full-time charity” changing the lives of families across the state. For some families living in regional NSW, it would take a 16-hour round trip to get their sick children to hospital, but that was before Kevin Robinson had his wings. Since September 2012, the local businessman and his pilots have flown the Little Wings aeroplane to the furthest reaches of the state, picking up kids and their families and delivering them straight to hospital; allowing them to spend more time at home and receive treatment faster. Mr Robinson, who has been flying since the age of 16, met with the Children’s Hospital and Westmead’s Oncology Ward and seeing the gap between what regional families go through compared to local families, was convinced he had found his calling. “I wasn’t looking to work with children or for anything in particular but when I met with them, it felt like a good fit for me,” he said. “When we began, we found that we were making a really significant difference for regional families from the word go, and that was exciting. When you do a fli ght, you instantly help.” Designed to keep families together during what would be the toughest of
times, the transport option Little Wings delivers has improved the wellbeing of these children and in turn, has improved their reaction to treatment. “Take a kid on a joy ride in an aeroplane for an hour and take another on a seven-hour car trip and see which one is happier,” he said. “Emotionally it’s better for them whilst the energy and strength is very important for the treatment process.” The Children’s Hospital at Westmead is excited by the impact the service has had on the children in their care. “Cancer treatment disrupts the lives of everyone in the family and Little Wings enables young patients to spend time at home that wouldn’t otherwise be possible,” said Dr Luciano Dalla-Pozza, Senior Staff Specialist and Department Head of Oncology. Th is year, Little Wings have so far completed 64 fl ights, aiming to make 180 by the end of the year. With a second aeroplane to join the team next month, Little Wings are hoping to almost double the amount of fli ghts however without funding, that dream may not be realised. “The original plan was to start up something small that we could self-fund but it has grown to a point where we just can’t do that anymore,” Mr Robinson said. A donation of any size will help Little Wings reach new heights. For more information on this remarkable, little-known charity or to donate to help it grow, visit www. littlewings.org.au.

Orchard Hills farm recognised for improving the lives of disadvantaged locals
C
KATHERINE TWEED
ana Farm in Orchard Hills has been recognised with a prestigious award for its efforts to improve the lives of disadvantaged locals. Just last week the project, a joint initiative of Cana Communities and TAFE NSW Western Sydney Institute (WSI), was recognised with a national award by the Association for Tertiary Education Management and Campus Review for its efforts in community engagement. Susan Hartigan, WSI Director, believes that Cana Farm “truly changes the lives of participants. “Cana Farm helps disadvantaged local people by building on their strengths and skills and creating a sense of belonging, Ms Hartigan said. “The program aims to transform lives by improving the wellbeing of people in some of the most marginalised sectors of society. Nationally accredited TAFE training is delivered on the farm, helping students to socialise in the community and to increase their employability skills. More than 700 participants with special needs have benefited from 56 different courses offered at Cana Farm, teaching employment skills whilst covering diverse subject areas from agriculture and horticulture to cafe skills and hospitality. Products from the Farm, including recycled furniture, produce and coffee are sold by the Cana Social Enterprise, with profits used to support the community.

Kitchen banks vital donation Penrith Community Kitchen grateful for $5,000 pledge from St George bank CASSANDRA O CONNOR
P
enrith Community Kitchen has received a generous donation of $5,000 from the St George Bank Penrith branch. The Community Kitchen, which provides wholesome and healthy meals to those less fortunate in the community, relies on donations to keep its doors open. St George Penrith held a competition on Facebook recently to ask local residents which local organisation should be supported with a donation of $5,000 from the bank. Penrith Branch manager, Michelle Cooper, said there was outstanding support for the Community Kitchen, which received the most number of votes in the online competition. “The great thing was how much awareness the competition raised about groups in the local community that need our support,” she said. “My team earlier in the year ran a food drive for the Kitchen and that also showed them how important giving back to the community is.” Happy Dragon, the bank’s mascot, was on hand to deliver the cheque last Tuesday to Penrith Community Kitchen President, Bob Baines. “Th is donation will go towards buying food for the Kitchen and maintenance repairs. We are very grateful to both the community and St George for their generosity. Th is will help the many people we feed each week,” he said.
Happy Dragon joins with staff from St George Bank and volunteers from Penrith Community Kitchen for a cheque handover.

Staying cool: Hot weather ahead this summer in Penrith

fight with water bombs and water pistols will cool you down and take you back to those summer birthday parties you went to as a kid. • Placing an ice pack on your wrists to cool the blood in your veins will instantly make you feel cooler. If you don’t have an ice pack close by, frozen bags of peas and corn will do the trick. • Sleeping when it’s still 30 degrees outside is never fun, so feel more comfortable and cool by sleeping with just a sheet and a fan directed at you.

f spring’s weather is anything to go by we are in for one hot summer in Penrith. There are many obvious ways to keep you and your family cool like turning on the air conditioner or jumping in the pool but there are also plenty of other tricks to beat the heat. • There’s nothing better than eating an ice block, ice cream or even a Zooper Dooper on a hot summer’s day. They are all inexpensive options and the perfect snack to stay refreshed. • Having a good old fashioned water

trip to the beach is more risky for people living in western Sydney – a statistic Surf Life Saving NSW are working hard to reverse. Shockingly, more than twice as many western Sydney residents have been victims of a coastal drowning than people from anywhere else in NSW. In an effort to reduce this incidence, Surf Life Saving NSW Surf School is gearing up to educate local school
students next term. The Surf School will be travelling to schools across the area to educate Year Nine students on a number of important surf safety messages. “It is essential that before students living in western Sydney reach the high risk age of 18, they receive education in the dangers of coastal environments,” said Surf Life Saving NSW Academy Education Manager, Pamela Simon. The Surf School will be delivered free of charge to schools and provide educational packages. For further information call 0407 100 382.

ur advocacy program for greater Government involvement is consistent with the approach taken by the Urban Coalition and the National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA) that also seek direct Commonwealth intervention in creating new pathways for planning the growth of cities such as Penrith. The Urban Coalition is represented by some leading and powerful organisations such as the Property Council, Urban Development Institute of Australia, Australian Institute of Architects and Australian Conservation Foundation. In April 2013 the Urban Coalition released its plan for a ‘New Deal for Urban Australia’. It calls for direct intervention by the Commonwealth to ensure quality strategic planning for the future of our cities. It further calls for leadership and investment and recommends the establishment of an Urban Infrastructure Fund to meet the backlog of $500 billion in infrastructure needs. Finally the Urban Coalition has also called for the establishment of the Department of Cities and Urban Development to drive such change. The NGAA is a prominent member of the Urban Coalition. Its role is strongly supported by Penrith City Council and its advocacy for better resourcing of peripheral cities such as Penrith is now well recognised by the Commonwealth. Window dressing
Attracting clients
A
s someone with a home office, I enjoy immensely the clothing benefits that accompany it. I can wear jeans most days and when it’s cold I can wear my ugg boots and no-one knows! But is the way we dress REALLY that important? As much as we might want our expertise, skills and confidence to be the fi rst thing that people notice, it is the way we dress when we are around clients, potential clients and other stakeholders that creates 90 per cent of the fi rst impression. And this varies for each business. It would not be appropriate for a tradesperson to arrive for a job wearing a suit. But arriving at my house with a branded polo shirt or t-shirt and clean attire will go a long way to projecting a professional image and promoting trust. Conversely, a solicitor wearing jeans and a midriff top is not likely to inspire me with confidence. And although slick talking and a winning smile may help to change my initial impression, why create a barrier? It is important to dress appropriately both for your industry and clients. Some may argue that dressing in the way that people expect can also mean that you are not creating a particularly memorable impression – you look the same as everyone else in your industry. There is defi nitely room for self-expression: for example, you might be known as the person who always wears red shoes. But if you approach your dress sense in a “what you see is what you get” style, it may come across as idiosyncratic, rather than unique. O
ne of the common questions I get as a business advisor is “how can I make customers come to me?” Clients usually want to know how they can promote their product or services for little or no money or why their advertising isn’t working as well as it should. When I ask them if they have bothered to get off their backside or picked up a phone they look at me with bewilderment. No longer can you sign a lease, put an advertisement in the yellow pages or local print media, open the doors and expect people to fl y in. Sure those methods mentioned can help, but growing a business is so much more these days, even compared to two years ago. You need to ‘sell’ and it’s the most effective and cost effective form of promotion. If you have never cold called it can seem daunting. Th is is usually caused by our fear of rejection however, with a little more understanding of the selling process and some basic training, anyone can learn to be successful in selling their products or services. Your job of selling is to assist potential clients in their buying decision by demonstrating the benefits of use. Take a look at television advertisements for beer. The y sell the benefits of using the product, not the features of the product itself. People don’t buy an electric razor, they buy a closer shave and a better appearance. Selling shouldn’t be difficult. Practice and develop your techniques and listen to what your potential clients say and look for trends that will help your business. he caring hearts of a group of Emu Plains men and women have brightened the life of stroke victim David Reid, who is now a “changed man” by all accounts. Six years ago, Mr Reid woke up in the middle of the night with severe chest pain and was admitted to hospital. The 70-year-old was having an angiogram when a clot dislodged, causing a stroke; he has been bound to a wheelchair, unable to communicate with speech properly and has not been home ever since. The Emu Plains Lions Club learnt of Mr Reid’s story and knew they could do something to help; they have been visiting him weekly, taking him out for a coffee and a laugh.
“Prior to us visiting him, he was just fairly lonely, very introverted and just wasn’t himself. As soon as we started to get involved, making him feel like part of the community, it made a world of difference,” said Emu Plains Lions member, John Choma. Working in pairs, the Lions Club members take Mr Reid from Edenglassie Nursing Home to the local shopping centre for “a coffee and some doughnuts” where they share many laughs and playful banter about Mr Reid’s passion for the Parramatta Eels. Family who visit Mr Reid when they can have noticed a big change in the man, reporting that he is much more like himself than he has been. Staff at Edenglassie also say that Mr Reid is a changed man and looks forward to his visits
from the Lions Club members. Mr Reid still has trouble communicating verbally, however with each meeting Lions Club members are sure that he is improving and “in his own way, has learned to get some of his messages across”. The time that the Lions Club give to help out Mr Reid is not characteristic of the usual service they give to the community but to them, it is just as important. “The Lions Club normally try to help people by raising funds but this is something that doesn’t cost anything. Just a little time and attention makes a huge difference to a person. It gives us a heck of a lot of satisfaction,” Mr Choma said. - Katherine Tweed

Mushrooms could be a good way for seniors to get their Vitamin D requirements.
Mushrooms are the answer: Study’s Vitamin D solution All her life Deby Brien has been the sporting type, having played basketball, netball, ten pin bowling and pool, the latter two in competition levels. “The competitive streak is defin itely there and that doesn’t fade,” Deby said. After a knee reconstruction, which resulted in her having to quit ten pin bowling, the 56-year-old spent three years without sports in her life until she
found bowls in 1997. “I just saw lawn bowls on the TV one morning and said ‘that’s it’. I took up lawn bowls and I never looked back.” Three weeks after she started playing she was made a skip and has been there ever since. She has achieved a lot in lawn bowls, which includes completing a City vs Country tournament recently and is ranked in the top 32 bowlers in Australia.
A
KATHERINE TWEED
new study has revealed that a solution to Australia’s Vitamin D deficiency epidemic could be as simple as eating a few mushrooms every day. UV radiation from the sun is the most commonly known source of Vitamin D but with over a third of Australians affected by a deficiency, experts are keen to highlight other ways people can get their recommended daily intake. The University of Sydney undertook a
study into the Vitamin D levels of button mushrooms and found that, if grown in direct sunlight, the mushrooms develop the vitamin in almost the same way as humans and that if a person eats only three mushrooms, they ingest 100 per cent of an adult’s daily Vitamin D intake. “After one hour in direct sunlight, your mushrooms won’t diminish in flavour or appearance but will have adequate Vitamin D levels. It’s a real breakthrough in nutritional science and this small change may help millions of Australians overcome their Vitamin D defic iency,” said practicing dietitian, Glenn Cardwell.

ust one week into the school holidays, local kids are already getting bored and are searching for activities to fi ll up their days. Grandparents are often a go-to for bored kids but keeping grandchildren interested can be challenging. The beauty about being a grandparent is that you have much more life experience than your grandchildren and while structured activities are run by organisations from all over the area,
spontaneous fun with you can be just as entertaining. In the Penrith area, a trip to the local pool will cost grandparents no more than $5 per person, with some offering special family deals or free entry for children. For those adventurous kinds, a short drive will reveal thousands of trails laying in the shade of huge gum trees through the Blue Mountains national park. For something a little closer to home, try the great river walk, alongside Nepean River, which is a huge hit with kids who like to ride bikes and scooters while you mind the picnic!

o you’ve retired. You’re no doubt enjoying your newfound freedom, the opportunities to spend time with family and friends, to travel and importantly, to just relax. Retirement is a wonderful reward after years in the workforce. But while you’re relaxing, it’s important to keep active – both physically and mentally. Your body might be ageing, but keeping your brain active will keep you healthy. Studies have shown that some basic good health habits such as staying physically active, getting enough sleep and eating a balanced diet can help prevent cognitive decline. Research has also shown that people who take part in mentally stimulating activities both early and later on in life have a slower rate of memory decline compared to those who do not. By protecting and even sharpening our minds we can delay the onset of illnesses such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. There are plenty of easy ways to keep your mind active. It sounds simple but you should keep learning. Challenge your brain with mental exercises. These are believed to activate processes that help maintain individual brain cells and stimulate communication among them. You could also pursue a hobby or
volunteer for a project that involves a skill you wouldn’t usually use. Don’t be afraid to play games. Crosswords, puzzles, Sudoku, card games and chess are great ways to keep your mind active. Games are also a wonderful way to bond with your grandchildren. Studies have shown video games can help seniors’ hand-eye co-ordination as well as improve mental sharpness. Make sure you continue to read. Reading can improve your vocabulary and writing skills, as well as introduce you to new skills and knowledge. Other challenges you could take on include learning a musical instrument, participating in a discussion group such as a book club or learning a new language. You could also try variations on what you know – if you like cooking, tackle a particularly difficult recipe. Or perhaps take on an advanced crossword series if puzzles are more your thing. It’s also important to keep moving. Physical activity can help your long-term brain health by reducing your risk of stroke. Lastly, you’re not superhuman. Tha t’s why we have a range of devices at our fi ngertips to make our lives easier. Take advantage of calendars and planners, shopping lists, address books, diaries and birthday books.

The case for appointing a named midwife
S
cience gives us so many great inventions and advanced technology that we sometimes forget good old human interaction and how important it is. There seems to be a baby boom on at the moment and this is an area where interaction and human support is very valuable. An Australian study highlights the benefits of one-to-one care before, during and after childbirth. Scientists from the University of Sydney compared the old system of appointing a named midwife to oversee childbirth and standard maternity care that tends to be shared between different health professionals. They found that the simple act of using an individual caseload midwife led to a significant reduction in rates of nonemergency caesarean-section births. Women under the care of a named midwife were also less likely to experience a spontaneous labour, required lower doses of pain-killing drugs and suffered less blood loss after birth. They stayed in hospital for less time than women given standard care, and were more likely to breastfeed their babies. Under caseload midwifery, women were looked after by a named midwife or backup throughout pregnancy and childbirth. The midwife continued to make home
visits for up to six weeks after the baby was born. However the midwives delivering standard care were only available on a rostered basis and supported by other hospital staff. They did not have the opportunity to form one-to-one relationships with women throughout the duration of their care. “Caseload midwifery even costs roughly $566 less per women than current maternity care,” the report says. “Our results show that in women of any risk, caseload midwifery is safe and cost effective. “A health system that makes caseload midwifery services available to all women would provide the right services to the right women at the right time.” The report says there are many other benefits of this system. “Such an approach can reduce unnecessary interventions, iatrogenic (surgical instrument) harm, deaths, and costs. It can also strengthen the health and well-being of women, the start of the early years of a child’s life, and the capabilities of women to take care of their families and themselves.” Just as a mum’s bond to her newborn provides immeasurable health benefits to her baby, so too does her own support network provide huge benefits to the new mother.

Four tips to live by
P
eople love information in small chunks so I love these four tips from Irena Macri who writes:
Firstly, diet is of course a huge part of how you look and feel. I focus on free-range and grass fed meats, fi sh and seafood, lots of vegetables, some fruit, berries, nuts and seeds, and natural sweeteners like honey or dried fruit. I include a little healthy, unsweetened, full fat dairy as I have no sensitivities and I especially like yogurt and products from goat’s and sheep’s milk. I avoid grains, gluten, legumes, soy, processed sugar and hydrogenated/ industrial seed and soy-based oils such as canola, soybean, vegetable and sunflower. I “try” to keep alcohol to a minimum and stick to red and white wine or clear white spirits. Secondly, laugh! They say laughter is the best medicine and they’re right. Research and studies reveal that laughter helps to improve one’s immunity against diseases. It’s probably because laughter is a powerful stress reliever providing us with positive energy. I like surrounding myself with people that make me laugh and I like to laugh at myself, which is also a good habit to get into. I often look up jokes or watch

something ridiculous on YouTube to get a good dose of laughter. I highly recommend going to stand-up comedy or you can even try self-induced laughter by practicing laughter yoga. Th irdly, break a sweat. Spend some time each day moving your body until you break a sweat. Jog, run, dance, swim, do yoga or pilates, surf, hike, rock climb or whatever you like to do for 20-30 minutes each day or more. Exercise keeps you young, fit and happy – that’s a fact! And fourth, I try to get eight hours of sleep each night. Most of us don’t get enough sleep either by not sleeping well or not sleeping long enough. Lack of sleep messes with our cortisol levels and can cause sugar cravings, poor concentration, decreased energy and weight gain. I know we all live in different circumstances and go through different stages in our lives where even an hour of sleep is precious but if possible, make your shut-eye time a priority as it affects more than you know.

THE PHARMACIST SAYS YS

by Martin Cominotto
It all starts in the GUT!
Losing weight for summer
any years ago naturopaths were styled “Gut Doctors”. Th is was because our primary focus has been on the Gastro Intestinal Tract (GIT) or the gut. There are a number of very good reasons for this but one of the main ones is that if the gut is not working properly you cannot absorb things like nutrition, herbs and drugs. If you don’t absorb well then you do not get the benefit from your foods or your medicines – natural or drugs. Therefore in any disease state the fi rst consideration should be the gut. These days there is a huge upsurge in irritable bowel and inflammatory bowel problems. There is a very good reason for this and it is tied in with why obesity and auto-immune diseases are such a problem. The reason is inflammation. We think of infla mmation as the cause of arthritis and rheumatism but inflammation underpins all auto-immune disease and it is the root cause of diabetes, obesity, infertility and a host of other human problems. You see, whenever something goes wrong in the body, our fi rst response is to send inflammation there. That way if there are any infectious agents such as bacteria or viruses, they will be killed off and we will be protected. Unfortunately very often the thing that triggers the inflammation continues at a low level causing the body to continue to create excessive infla mmation. How do you counter this? My fi rst suggestion is that you start with a pre-biotic and a pro-biotic. Get the digestive system topped up fi rst so that your friends in the gut are in tip top condition. If you have a inflammatory bowel problem then Lactobacillus Plantarum has been shown to reduce inflammation in the gut. Next eat foods such as turmeric and slippery elm and aloe vera inner leaf gel. Don’t have the outer leaf if you have a gut problem.
s we enter spring and the weather warms up, many of us want to lose the extra weight gained during winter. However weight loss is made confusing with the thousands of products, programs and ideas that all promise the ‘magic bullet’. Some of the simplest tips are the most effective and so I have put together some guidelines that I have seen get great results for my customers. Start off your day with a healthy breakfast. Research shows that skipping breakfast tends to lead to overeating throughout the rest of the day and poorer food choices overall. Have a healthy snack, like a piece of fruit, in the morning and afternoon. Th is helps stop you becoming so hungry you binge on junk food or overeat at dinner. Try to limit your snack foods to fruit only. Strawberries are a great snack food that tastes really good and they are very cheap right now as they are in season. A punnet of strawberries will fi ll you up and contain less calories than your average muesli or snack bar. Eat a small dinner and avoid eating a lot of foods high in carbohydrates such as pasta, bread, rice and potatoes. Carbohydrates are high in energy and if your body doesn’t use them they turn to fat. As most of us just relax after dinner and then go to bed, you need to be careful with the size of your dinner. Eliminate soft drinks, alcohol and juices. These drinks are high in energy and sugar and cutting them out is an easy way to reduce your energy intake. Instead, aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Finally, a little exercise will really boost your weight loss effor ts!

Lilly’s lessons
L
illy is the most beautiful cattle dog, but she was not easy to live with. Her mum was at her wits end. Lilly was noisy, destructive and very boisterous. Living with an out of control dog was very diffic ult. But her mum was not going to give up on her. Lilly needed help for her bad habits and at Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic we offer behavioural counselling. Often animals that are troublesome have medical reasons for this behaviour. Lilly was not a naughty, untrainable dog, rather she was a dog suffering from an anxiety disorder. Th is is a common disorder (similar to people), occurring in around 20 per cent of pets. New scientific studies show dogs (especially ones with anxiety) do not respond well to owners who are trying to be the “pack leader” and a different approach needs to be taken. Lilly needed medications to help her focus and feel less anxious. These medications are initially used for six to 12 months. Modern medications for anxiety have few side effects and they create permanent positive changes within the brain. An additional benefit is pets can learn better and faster. As with people, medications alone will not solve most behavioural problems. There needs to be a re-training period to help the patient and owner learn a different way of communicating, and for the patient to learn how to self-settle. One session will not usually provide a cure. Lilly has now had around six sessions and her mum is doing all of the training we have recommended. The results have been remarkable. She no longer paces, pants and looks worried; she can lie calmly and listens to instructions. Everyone is happy with Lilly’s lessons learnt. Lilly’s mum told Dr Lynn “it’s worth putting in the miles. Lilly is defi nitely improving... she’s moving forward in leaps and bounds”.

FASHION FIXATION by Katherine Tweed
Don’t up-stage the bride!
O
ne of your childhood friends is getting married – a spring wedding, how perfect – and you have just created the best outfit to wear to help celebrate their big day. You put it on, totally satisfied with how it looks and you think “yeah, I look good”, but you stop right there as a million questions flood into your mind. Am I going to up-stage the bride? Should my dress be this short? Is my suit going to look like the groom’s? Should I try not to stand out? A wedding is an event that you can’t compare to anything else; you can’t get away with dressing like it is a birthday party or a work function. You have been invited to share in someone’s special day as a guest, which means that showing the couple respect should be your highest focus. I think the notion of dressing with respect at a wedding is where the traditional ‘don’t wear white’ and ‘don’t upstage the bride’ customs come from. When a woman wears something low cut or super short to a wedding, it can come across as disrespectful. At the last wedding I went to, I was shocked to see one of the guests wearing a playsuit. Now don’t get me wrong, wearing a playsuit is fi ne but this young woman was wearing one that had no back and an enormous split down the front, there was more skin than clothing. She looked amazing, but still, to a wedding? More people talked about her outfit than they talked about the bride – that’s disrespect. Th is is the same as wearing something too casual. Unless casual is specifically stated in the dress-code you should be prepared to wear something formal – men, this means a tie. Never, ever be tricked into thinking that a t-shirt can pass as formal or that you can wear sneakers with pants; you’ll just look like you didn’t try.

School holidays again??
Dealing with fear
chool holidays seem to come around all too quickly. I will be taking some time out this break to spend with my children. While it is not always possible to take the kids away every school holidays it is nice to plan special holidays for your kids that will create lasting memories. It takes a lot of planning to be able to manage the expense of an overseas or interstate trip when you have a mortgage, bills and a couple of kids to care for. But like any fi nancial goal you can get there with some sensible and consistent budgeting. For some great tips on budgeting, visit www.moneysmart.gov. au and start planning your next family vacation that will create memories forever. And for those of you that want to keep it local, there’s always plenty going on in Penrith. Why not check out websites such as www.penrithaustralia. com.au/what’s-on or www.weekendnotes.com or www.eventfinde r.com.au. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter where you are but who you’re with. So enjoy yourself whatever you end up doing these school holidays.
ear is a horrible thing. It can paralyse us, fi lling us with anxiety and concern. Fear can even make us sick. Yet, there seems so much to be afraid of. Serious illness. Accidents. Having to do things you have never done before. Fear of being left alone. Fear of failure. Running out of money. Losing your job. Then, there is fear of death; our death or the death of family and friends. The Bible tells us how Jesus came into our world of fear and uncertainty. Frequently he met people who were afraid, just as people are today. When their circumstances seemed out of control, what did Jesus say to them? “Don’t be afraid; just believe.” But believe what? What were people supposed to believe that could help calm their fears? They needed to believe in Jesus. They needed to put their confidence in him. Jesus came into our “out of control world” and brought control. As you put your trust and confidence in Jesus, more and more you can know that God is always working for your good and never for your harm. Get to know the great promises in the Bible and the great God who makes them! You will fi nd that as you take Jesus’ words, “Don’t be afraid; just believe,” seriously, all fear will flow away. You could even pray a prayer like this, asking our good God, to deal with your fear: “Gracious Lord, you know how often fear confronts me in my life. Please speak into my heart the encouragement that enables me to take my fears in hand. Help me to learn and trust your promises. Amen”.

Drivers behaving badly: Calls and texts put lives at risk
N
NATHAN TAYLOR
RMA Insurance is calling for NSW drivers to focus on the road while driving, with one in four (27 per cent) still using their mobile phone while at the wheel. A survey of 500 NSW drivers also revealed that 91 per cent are texting and reading emails; 50 per cent are updating their Facebook status or Tweeting; 22 per cent are posting photos on Instagram; 50 per cent are playing games; and 76 per cent are taking photos.
NRMA Insurance spokesperson Tracy Woodley said the results are concerning as drivers are ignoring safety warnings. “All too often we see drivers running the risk and talking on their mobile phone or glancing down to write or a read a text message, putting their lives, other drivers and pedestrians at risk,” she said. “We understand everyone leads busy lives and social media is handy to stay connected with friends and family, however drivers shouldn’t risk the worst happening for the sake of a status update, Tweet or photo post.”

Konami Australia and their guests certainly enjoyed their evening in the Sky Lounge at the Penrith Paceway last Thursday night. Race one went to Swift Exit ($1.60) who made up for his narrow defeat at our last meeting and led all the way under the guidance of Blake Fitzpatrick to beat consistent Sunnivue Caesar. Outsider, Waste of Time ($17.10) rated perfectly in front by Glen McElhinney gave some joy to the bookmakers when he took out the second event from the very fast fi nishing and consistent Bye Bye Sir. 10-year-old Broken Spoke ($9.40) defied his age in race three and after sitting behind the leader, driver Josh Osbourne fi nished well to defeat the favourite Leighs Delight.
Good Life Girl ($4.00) led most of the way for driver Blake Fitzpatrick and held off Four Star Admiral who came from last at the 600m mark in the fourth race. Little Gozo ($2.20) with Lauren Panella aboard worked hard in the death seat in the fi fth race and although looking under pressure was able to win from Glacial Motion in the fi fth race. Virtual Hanover ($4.30) gave Dennis Wilson a much deserved win when she was able to defeat favourite Lovethelifeyoulive who put up a good effort in race six. The seventh proved an easy one for Happyeverlaughter ($1.80). Driver David Linden had an early lead and was never caught. The eighth and last was a virtual repeat of the seventh when Our Nanaimo ($1.30) worked hard to lead early.

Meanwhile, Panthers second-rower Sika Manu and Holden Cup halfback Daniel Foster have been named in Tonga’s 33-man train-on squad. Penrith-bound prop Brent Kite was announced as captain of the side. Club season launch: Penrith cricket “in for a big change”
Amanda Spratt will captain the Australian elite women’s team in Florence.

ASHLEIGH BERRY
he cycling UCI Road World Championships have taken over Florence, Italy this week and local girl Amanda Spratt has had a front row seat to all the action. As part of the Australian Elite Women’s team, Orica-AIS, Spratt will be taking part in Team and Individual Time Trials, and the Road Race until September 29. “The road race course in Florence has been described as the hardest course in many years. It begins with 60km on flat
and then fi nishes with five laps of a very technical circuit in central Florence that also features two significant climbs,” Spratt said. “The World Championships are always like no other event on the calendar. In addition to this, being held in a cyclingmad country like Italy will be really special.” Spratt, who represented Australia in the 2012 London Olympics, is looking for a strong end to this season of cycling. “I expect to play an important role as captain of the team and to support our designated leader Tiff Cromwell.”

irst grade bowler Jarrod Lee has received Penrith Cricket Club’s highest honour after he was named the 2013/14 club captain. Penrith’s inaugural club captain for the 2012/13 season, Ryan Smith, made the announcement at the club’s season launch at Howell Oval last Saturday night. “I think I’ve made a good choice in the person I’m handing the reigns over to and I’m sure they’ll do a great job,” Smith said. Lee, who’s only in his second year
at the local club since switching from Hawkesbury, said it was a “great honour” to be named club captain. “I’m really looking forward to this year, it’s been a really good feel so far and I think we’re in for a big change,” he said. The evening also featured the announcement of the teams across all grades for the upcoming season with Matthew Halse again named captain of the fi rst grade side. Former Penrith grade and Australian test cricketer Ian Davis, as well as exPenrith player Ken Hall, entertained the crowd with stories of their careers.

Wanderers draw in attention Impressive crowd on hand to watch A-League trial at Penrith Stadium t was a scrappy 1-all draw with very few highlights, but for fans of the Western Sydney Wanderers, that mattered little. After all, last Sunday’s trial match at Penrith Stadium took them one step closer to the return of the football season. And the fact that 7,000 fans turned up for a pre-season match in hot conditions – in the same week that ticketed memberships for the upcoming season sold out – showed that their loyal fan base is only getting more supportive. An own goal from Nigel Boogaard and an equaliser from Sergio Cirio ensured a share of the spoils in a match where the Wanderers’ high pressing line and swift counter-attacks troubled any plans Adelaide might have held. It was positive signs early on for the Wanderers as a Tahj Minniecon attacking raid bore fruit when his cross into the Adelaide box forced Reds’ defender Nigel Boogaard to put the ball into his own net. Adelaide replied strongly with Ante Covic forced into a fantastic diving save as he tipped a curling Sergio Cirio shot off target. Wanderers created the best chances of the match on the break and should have been ahead when some Aaron Mooy magic set-up Tomi Juric with the help of Minniecon. Receiving the ball in tight space, Mooy attracted the attention of a number of defenders before releasing Minniecon who
fl icked the ball on to fi nd Juric in a one-onone with Euegene Galekovic. The Wanderers’ new signing did well and looked certain to score before a great reaction save from Galekovic saw the ball parried for a corner. Minniecon was a constant force until being substituted at half time with his continued runs and clever balls, showing time and again why he is one of the most exciting players in the Hyundai A-League when fit. Adelaide was back on level terms two minutes into the second half when Sergio Cirio somehow got the ball past an outstretched Covic. The injection of Shinji Ono, Mark Bridge and Youssouf Hersi soon afterwards almost paid immediate dividends with the trio creating a number of chances between them. Hersi in particular was a danger to Adelaide’s defence and was unfortunate not to have put the Wanderers ahead when his low shot to the corner was saved by a diving Paul Izzo. As the pre-season continues, the Wanderers next play Melbourne Victory in Tasmania on Sunday at Kingston Twin Ovals in Hobart. The season proper for the Wanderers begins on October 12, when they take on the Central Coast Mariners at Bluetongue Stadium. The Weekender is producing a special 16-page Wanderers coverage every single week during the A-League season. Get ready football fans, the fi rst week of coverage is October 11.
The crowd watches on as Adelaide do battle with Western Sydney last Sunday.

Everything goes on the line Panthers, Wolves fight for a place in lower grade league grand finals NATHAN TAYLOR
P
enrith fans should take a good look a their Holden Cup team for this Saturday’s preliminary fin al against the Canberra Raiders because in three years it may resemble a similar side winning an elusive NRL premiership – that’s how special and talented this Panthers team is. As the team of “future superstars” prepare for the biggest game of their careers to date, their coach, Garth Brennan, has just one simple mission he wants them to accomplish. “The big key for me is for them to show me how much they want it, don’t worry about talking about it, they need to go out there and show me,” he told the Weekender. Brennan has laid down the challenge to his players to make this weekend’s clash against minor premiers Canberra the game of their lives, and desperately wants his more experienced heads in Bryce Cartwright, Daniel Foster, George Jennings and James Roberts to lead the way. “They are probably the better players of the NYC competition, so at this time of year they need to show they are at the top end of players in the NYC,” he said. “I’ve seen enough of Canberra over the years to know how potent they are in attack. I think they are peaking at the right time. Any side with a quality half like Mitch Cornish, you’ve really got to be on your toes.”
The Holden Cup and NSW Cup sides representing Penrith took part in a training session together last Friday. Photo: Nathan Taylor.
If Penrith fail to deliver this weekend, Brennan admitted the result won’t determine whether this season was a success or not, saying the future will dictate that. “When you coach junior representative sides it’s nice to win comps but you’re probably judged down the track on how
many NRL players develop out of these teams,” he said. Meanwhile, Penrith’s NSW Cup feeder team the Windsor Wolves also have a huge challenge ahead of them this Sunday afternoon when they face the Newcastle Knights at Leichhardt Oval for a spot in the grand fina l.
Windsor coach Guy Missio said his side are prepared and are in good spirits for the clash but know it won’t be just another ordinary game. “People say it’s just another game of footy but in the back of your mind it’s a game to get you into the grand fi nal,” he said.

AROUND THE GROUNDS Baseball: The Penrith Panthers fir st grade side are still winless this season after they lost both round two games against the Cronulla Sharks in the State Baseball League. Last Wednesday the Sharks narrowly defeated the Panthers 3-2, and things were similar on Sunday when the Panthers went down in a close battle 3-1. The Panthers play the Canterbury Vikings in round three. Ice Hockey: Flyers Ice Hockey Club junior Nathan Walker has missed out on a spot on the Washington Capitals NHL team. Had Walker made it he would have become the fi rst Australian to play in the NHL but instead will try and do it all over again next year. However, Walker still impressed Washington in his pre-season trials and as a result has signed a oneyear deal with their minor league team, Hershey Bears, who play in the American Hockey League (AHL). The 19-year-old will now become the fi rst Australian to play in the AHL. Basketball: Penrith Basketball Association are holding a series of spring basketball camps for kids aged five to 15-years-old. The camps are designed to help kids out with their basketball skills as well as encourage them to play basketball competitively in the future. The various camps will take place on September 26 and 27 as well as October 3 and 4. They will run from 9am to 3pm and

Soccer: Western Sydney Wanderers Youth League goalkeeper Thomas Manos has been selected in a 23-player Young Socceroos squad who will compete at the upcoming AFC U19 Championship Qualifiers, which will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from October 3-7. Netball: Congratulations to all the big winners at last Friday’s Penrith District Netball Association Presentation Night held at Panthers. We would like to make a special mention of St Clair local Freda Crane who took home coach of the year for the entire Association. Well done Freda!

week. The proud local club, which produced NRL stars Tim Grant and Michael Jennings, picked up seven awards during the evening including the A Grade Player of the Year Award and the Overall Club Championship Award. “The Junior League board and the St
Marys club all work together, that’s how these things come about,” said St Marys Rugby League Club board member, Barry Hupton. “I want to congratulate everyone who has won an award; you’ve done great.” St Marys also picked up the First Division Club Championship Award, and Saturday Club Championship Award. The club impressed individually as well, with Sam Jones named A Grade Player of the Year, Thompson Tuigamala named U17 Player of the Year and David Cartwright named International Coach of the Year.

career as a rugby league player when she was six before switching to rugby union only a year and a half ago because there were more opportunities for women. “I couldn’t play league anymore because the age stops at 12 for girls,” Robbins said. “I am enjoying union more though because with Sevens it’s a lot faster, there’s more positions, more to learn and more competition. There’s also more opportunities in union with both the Sevens and 15-person game, so you can get further.” Robbins revealed she chose the more male-dominated codes over female sports like netball because of her older brothers. “My brothers used to play it and I used to muck around with them in the backyard,” she said. “I just grew up in a football loving family, my dad was teaching me as well and I just grew to love it. “I believe more girls should play rugby to show boys girls can do it too.” The 2013 National Girls U18s Sevens Championships begins on October 12. t’s a quote not often heard from a 17-year-old girl just about to fi nish high school: “I love the hits… when you see a big girl running at you and you smash her, it’s the best feeling”. While most girls Elise Robbins’ age are worrying about pretty dresses and boys, the Year 12 Jamison High School student is more concerned about tackling techniques and sprint training. Robbins was recently rewarded for all her hard work and dedication off the field by being named in the NSW U18s Rugby Sevens team, which will compete at the 2013 National Girls U18s Sevens Championships on the Gold Coast next month. “Last year when I made the side it was a good feeling but there wasn’t much competition to get in because it was just starting up,” Robbins told the Weekender. “But this year there was a lot of competition with over 300 girls trying out, so it was pretty amazing to be one of 24 girls who got in.” The Jamisontown local began her sporting
