Mayor to be decided Monday night • Two-year terms to be introduced • Crameri may hold key • Labor Councillor likely to be Mayor DALE DRINKWATER
he decision on who will be Penrith’s next two Mayors could be in the hands of independent Councillor Kevin Crameri, who is yet to decide whether his support will lie with Labor or Liberal. It is all but confirmed that there will now be two-year terms for the Mayoral role, a break in tradition for Penrith. With seven out of the 15 Councillors, Labor needs just one more Councillor to support their Mayoral nominations to have a majority vote of eight Councillors. As the Liberal Party has just five Councillors, their Mayoral nominations would need the support of all three independents – Cr Crameri and Councillors Marcus Cornish and Jim Aitken – to get more than Labor’s guaranteed vote of seven. A third and less likely situation could play out, if both the Labor Party and Liberal Party join forces, and decide to have one Labor Mayor and one Liberal Mayor for two-year terms and divide the four Deputy Mayor terms evenly. However, if Labor can secure Cr Crameri, who remains tight-lipped, they won’t need to do any other deal.
T
Labor Councillors Ben Price, John Thain, Aaron Duke, Karen McKeown, Todd Carney, Kath Presdee and Greg Davies. Photo: Melinda Jane “I have received phone calls from both parties. There are a lot of negotiations,” Cr Crameri told the Weekender. The result could depend on which party can give Cr Crameri the best deal in return, by offering him a position as Deputy Mayor for one of the next four years.
“There are numerous offers and they are quite reasonable, but I’m not going to be disappointed if I get nothing. I am just happy to be back in again to inflict a little bit of honesty into some of the people on Council,” he said. Veteran Labor Councillor, John Thain,
has ruled out any dealings between Cr Cornish and the Labor Party. “My caucus is not inclined to deal with Marcus... Marcus probably realises because I haven’t called him and spoken to him,” he said. Cr Cornish feels the same way about the Labor Party, but said he is happy to deal with the Liberal Party and said conservatives – independents and Liberals – should stick together. “I’m happy to deal with anyone and be reasonable, at this stage the Labor Party won’t speak to me,” he said. “I don’t think they deal with me, even though I’m the reason they got Lindsay, through preferences and my comments on ABC’s ‘7.30’ about the Liberal candidate and the demise of the Liberal campaign.” Neither Labor or Liberal could confirm which Councillors they will put forward for Mayoralty, which leaves Cr Aitken still not ready to divulge his vote. “I have had phone calls made to me, but I don’t make deals. I personally haven’t got time to be Mayor,” he said. Cr Aitken said he will vote for the best Councillor who can handle the new two-year Mayoral terms, however, he is a self-confessed conservative which could indicate a right-wing vote.

enrith’s NRL season didn’t quite have a dream finish, but it’s far from a nightmare. The club’s 2016 campaign, which ended at the hands of Canberra at GIO Stadium last Saturday night, is littered with highlights and more importantly, glimpses into a very bright future. Despite last weekend’s loss, the mood amongst Penrith fans over the past week has been largely optimistic, mainly because there’s a feeling that 2016 was purely an entree – the main course is yet to come. With one of the youngest and most inexperienced sides in the competition, it was inevitable that the hype and occasion would catch up with the Panthers eventually. For me, it was a question of whether it’d happen against the Raiders last weekend or the competition’s best side, Melbourne, at AAMI Park this Saturday. As it turns out Canberra gets to make that dreaded trip into Storm territory in an attempt to achieve the impossible. I know we’ve heard it all before but there is something very special building at the foot of the Mountains. From the top down, the Panthers are in very good shape. Phil Gould’s influence continues to be a positive one, while CEO Brian Fletcher and Chairman Dave O’Neill are wonderful administrators taking the club in the right direction. The appointment of coach Anthony Griffin, while questionable back in October, has proven to be a masterstroke. Griffin has instilled the discipline required at Penrith and made the tough decisions to set the squad up for the future.

“The 2017 squad being assembled at Penrith is one of the best teams the club has ever put on the field”
On the field, the emergence of Matt Moylan, Bryce Cartwright and Nathan Cleary has been superb, and the good news is that all three are well positioned to play out their careers at Penrith. Across the park, the Panthers have gone about building a squad that plays for each other and cares about the Penrith ‘brand’. The inclusion of James Tamou next year will only further boost that culture given he comes from the highly successful North Queensland system under the guidance of Paul Green. But it’s more than that. You see, what gets missed when the big media players and experts talk about the quality play of Moylan, the unpredictability of Cartwright or the calmness of Cleary is the extraordinary work that goes on behind the scenes to foster the talent within those three players. It’s the same work that has turned
Reagan Campbell-Gillard and Leilani Latu into feared forwards who could well dominate the competition next year. It’s the same work that converted Waqa Blake from a capable fill-in player to a centre who could force either Dean Whare or Peta Hiku out of Penrith’s first grade team next season. The work to build a culture of success at Penrith hasn’t happened overnight, but it is now reaping rewards. It is a culture that focuses not only on what’s happening on the field or at training, but what’s happening in almost every minute of a player’s life. It’s not about over-protection, it’s about caring and managing expectations. There is very little doubt that the ‘premiership window’ has now been opened at Penrith. Circumstances could change things. A bounce of the ball, an unexpected error or a lapse in concentration can very quickly take a rugby league game in another direction. And off the field, well, we all know that the soap opera of rugby league never stops delivering. But if this squad isn’t playing in Grand Finals or winning premierships at some stage in the next couple of years, something has gone very wrong somewhere. I dare say that the 2017 squad being assembled at Penrith is one of the best teams the club has ever put on the field and without doubt the best since the 2003 premiership side. The experience gained from 2016, combined with the added influence of Tamou, puts the Panthers in a very special place. It is a sensational time to be a Penrith supporter.

Councillors prepare for new term
Tanya Davies Member for Mulgoa
Experienced campaigners take the lead as election result is made official DALE DRINKWATER
fter a week of crunching the numbers and speculating who was in or out, 15 new Penrith Councillors have officially been declared. The final position in North Ward was taken by independent Councillor Kevin Crameri, making the new Penrith Council full of three independents, five Liberals and seven Labor Councillors. All but three Councillors – Cr Crameri, and Councillors Jim Aitken and Bernard Bratusa – attended the Declaration of the Polls at Penrith Council Chambers on Monday, the first time they converged as a group for the next four years. New Councillors refrained from making speeches, with seasoned Councillors like Liberal Ross Fowler showing them the ropes. “To those who have been successful, I look forward to working with you over the next four years,” he said. Mayor Karen McKeown said the re-election of the majority of former Penrith Councillors shows Penrith Council has done a good job. “Most of those who were previous Councillors and put themselves forward were re-elected, so that’s really heartening to see,” she said.

he Penrith Paceway is mourning the loss of veteran Director Don Clough OAM. Mr Clough, who dedicated much of his life to the harness racing industry, passed away last Friday at the age of 89. Penrith Paceway CEO, Lorraine Pozza, said his passing will be felt across the entire harness racing community. “Don’s knowledge was invaluable especially with horses and harness racing,” she said. “I know Don meant so many different things to so many people as he was always there to help with everything. “Don was unstoppable, everything Don did he did with passion, whether it be harness racing or the day to day running of our club. He was always there to give a hand.” Mr Clough was honoured with Life Membership of Penrith Harness Racing Club in 2001, and in 2002 was named a ‘living legend of harness racing’ by the Board of Harness Racing NSW. A special tribute was being planned for the Paceway’s meeting last night (Thursday) with a race named in Mr Clough’s honour. “I feel that I personally and everyone here has been blessed to have had this

Libs commit to keep election promises Government will deliver on election commitments despite losing Lindsay to Labor at Federal Election DALE DRINKWATER
romises to Lindsay made before this year’s Federal Election will still be kept despite the seat falling to Labor’s Emma Husar. Liberal Senator for Western Sydney, Marise Payne, this week moved to reassure the community that funding commitments will go ahead. Before the July Federal Election, former Lindsay MP Fiona Scott made several promises on behalf of the Liberal National Party, some even alongside Senator Payne. Although the Liberal Party doesn’t have a representative for Lindsay in the Lower House after it lost the seat to Ms Husar, Senator Payne has emerged as the Liberal Party’s voice for Lindsay through her role as a Senator in the Upper House. “Western Sydney is in my DNA and I look forward to working with local councils, groups and other organisations to firmly ensure pre-committed funding is delivered,” she said. Those funding commitments include a $5 million upgrade to the Nepean River precinct in front of The Coffee Club, including a new boat ramp, upgraded parking and amenities.
P
The Liberal Party also committed $80 million in joint funding to upgrade Mulgoa Road from the M4 to Blaikie Road, and over $1.6 million towards upgrading the dangerous intersection at Andromeda Drive and The Northern Road. Nearly $4 million was promised to the Nepean Blue Mountains Primary Health Network for drug and rehabilitation services, and an additional $11 million was committed for a conservation corridor in the endangered Cumberland Plain Woodlands. These commitments were made on the premise that the Liberal Party was re-elected to form Government, and as it was, Senator Payne wants to make sure they keep their promises. “We have the strongest commitment to making a genuine and lasting difference to western Sydney – this includes the delivery of our election commitments and the Smart Cities Plan,” she said. “In Lindsay, $7.45 million in funding will be delivered by the Coalition through the Community Development Grants Programme to fund local infrastructure projects.” Work is also already underway on the Government’s $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan.

Drunk driver caught up in “work hard, play hard” culture A man who drove drunk, almost hitting a police car, has been stripped of his licence for seven months. Paul Aaron Morawsky, 21, faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with ‘high-range drink driving’. The court heard the concreter had consumed “copious amounts” of alcohol following an after work drinking session, and narrowly missed colliding with a
police car when he pulled out after dropping off a friend. Mr Morawsky’s lawyer said the defendant had fallen foul of a “work hard, play hard” drinking culture that was common in that industry. A magistrate has refused to pardon a man nabbed drink driving for a second time. Magistrate Roger Clisdell concluded it was “inappropriate” to give Michael Paul leniency given his record. Mr Paul fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with ‘mid-range drink driving’. The court heard the accused was intercepted without his headlights on as he drove the short distance home after picking up visiting friends from Penrith train station. Magistrate Clisdell said the appropriate thing to do would have been to order a taxi. He was convicted, fined $400 and barred from driving for six months. Meanwhile, Rodney Wilson Tindale is staring down the barrel of a custodial sentence after he was busted drinkdriving for the sixth time. “I understand I have a problem,” Mr Tindale told Penrith Local Court last Thursday when he appeared charged with ‘high-range drink driving’. Magistrate Roger Clisdell suggested the accused take the adjournment he was entitled to get some legal advice. “You could be going to jail,” he warned. The accused said it “might be a good idea” to get legal advice. The matter was relisted to Thursday, October 20. – Alena Higgins

L AW a n d O R D E R From The Courts: Your Complete Legal Wrap COMPILED BY ALENA HIGGINS. OUR COURT REPORTING IS SPONSORED BY LOCAL LAW FIRM COMPLETE LEGAL & CONVEYANCING.
Mail thief denied bail, will front court again on October 28
A man caught stealing “red handed” from St Marys letter boxes has been denied bail. Geoff Dean Freeman, 39, appeared before Penrith Local Court by video link last Thursday accused of pilfering mail from residences along Hall Street. He was arrested on September 12 after police were called to the street about 10.30pm following reports of a man stealing mail from numerous letter boxes. Police conducted a search of the accused’s car allegedly uncovering 23.7 grams of Methylamphetamine, four fraudulent $50 notes, three mobile phones and stolen mail. Mr Freeman, who was on bail at the time of the fresh offences, was charged with ‘possess counterfeit money’, ‘goods in personal custody suspected of being stolen’, ‘possess prohibited drug’, ‘supply prohibited drug greater than indictable quantity’ and ‘larceny’. He was bail refused, despite the defence arguing his detention was not justified due to his “vulnerable’ mental health, length of time on remand before trial and the fact there was no other indication of drug supply. Magistrate Roger Clisdell determined the show cause requirement had not been overcome, saying the evidence, which included wallets full of cards from other people and counterfeit notes all with the same serial number was “almost overwhelming”. When he realised he was not coming home, Mr Freeman sobbed and repeatedly said “I’m sorry mum”, to his mother who was in court for support. He is due in court again on October 28.
Mother escapes conviction over motorcycle crash
A 35-year-old mother who collided with a motorcyclist caught in her blind spot, has cried tears of relief after her charge was thrown out in court.
Jennifer Kate Barat fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday after previously pleading guilty to ‘driving occasioning grievous bodily harm’. The court heard the “dedicated teacher” – who had an unblemished driving record – was attempting to turn right onto Mamre Road at the intersection of Solander Drive, St Clair on November 26 last year when she collided with the speeding motorcyclist, who was travelling close behind a utility and obstructed from view. Believing she had about a four-length gap after the utility passed, Ms Barat proceeded. Magistrate Roger Clisdell concluded most motorists in their “hurried state in suburban traffic” would have done the same thing. “99 per cent of drivers probably would have done the exact same thing if that was their observation,” he said. He said the fact the defendant’s Toyota Kluger SUV was written off meant it was “absolutely uncontroversial” that the motorcycle was “flying”. This was “probably why” Ms Barat failed to see him in the first place, he said, but noted the victim still had right of way despite the fact he was speeding. Magistrate Clisdell said the offence had an “extremely low level of criminality” and used to be called an accident that didn’t attract a criminal charge. “Does this person deserve a criminal record? In my view the answer is ‘no’,” he said. He said he didn’t think the public would be “outraged” if Ms Barat was able to keep her licence, before rejecting the prosecution’s submission that a Section 10 bond was inappropriate due to the victim’s injuries. He said his decision in no way set out to minimise the motorcyclist’s injuries, saying there were other avenues in which he could seek compensation. Ms Barat’s charge was then dismissed by the court without proceeding to a conviction.
Driver was speeding when he swerved to avoid kangaroo
A provisional motorist who swerved to avoid a kangaroo, crashing into a tree, has been schooled in the art of defensive driving. Troy Ryan, 20, faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with negligent driving. The court heard the concreter was driving his intoxicated mates home in a borrowed car when he left the road at high speed to dodge the roo. His lawyer conceded his client was speeding, telling the court Mr Ryan was travelling close to 100km/h, thinking that was the speed limit. But Magistrate Roger Clisdell pointed out he was going too fast regardless, as a P1 driver wasn’t allowed to exceed 90km/h. “Mr Ryan, what did you learn about animals at the traffic offender program?” Magistrate Clisdell asked. “That they can pop out at any time,” Mr Ryan replied. “Didn’t they tell you, hit the animal... don’t leave the road?” Magistrate Clisdell said. He said it was better to get a new front end than broken bones. “Just mow down the kangaroo,” he said. He was handed a 12-month good behaviour bond.
Magistrate questions man’s excuse for driving
A magistrate has attracted snickers from the gallery after questioning a defendant’s explanation as to why he was illegally behind the wheel. Adam Orobello fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with ‘driving while disqualified’. The 30-year-old’s lawyer submitted his client had not driven since June 2015, when he was barred from driving for two years. But he said on the day of the offence the accused noticed his driver was “not 100
per cent” so he got behind the wheel to reduce the risk to himself, his friend and the public. Magistrate Roger Clisdell said as a legal practitioner for 29 years and as a magistrate for more than eight, he had heard it all. “Excuse me for being cynical,” he said. “The odds of being caught the first time you drive are astronomical. You must be the unluckiest person in the room.” He was convicted, fined $2,000, ordered to enter into a two-year good behaviour bond and disqualified for a further two years from the conclusion of his earlier ban.
Celebration turns sour for intoxicated L-plater
A speeding L-plater who blew more than four times over the legal limit has been ordered off the road for nine months. George Tarmai fronted Penrith Local Court charged with ‘high-range drink driving’, ‘unaccompanied learner’, ‘exceed speed’ and ‘fail to display L-plates’. The court heard Mr Tarmai had been celebrating a promotion and came under notice when he was caught speeding through a road works zone. He was convicted, fined $2,600, ordered to fit an interlock device to his car for 24 months and hit with a two-year good behaviour bond.
Drink driving charge puts blemish on man’s good record
Mark Edward Flynn has been banned from driving for six months after pleading guilty to drink driving. Mr Flynn fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with ‘mid-range drink driving’ and speeding. “It’s been 20 years since you’ve been in trouble and your record’s not too bad, but you didn’t do very well on this night,” Magistrate Roger Clisdell said to Mr Flynn. He was convicted and fined $600.

Running a business with other people Do you own shares in a private company through which you run a business with other people? More and more people, when people are coming in partnership to run a business together, are doing so via a company as opposed to more traditional means like a partnership. There are a number of reasons for this, including the fact that a company allows you to limit your liability and to an extent protect your personal assets. Traditionally this was known as a ‘partnership’ and the terms of the partnership were documented in a Partnership Agreement. This is still a perfectly valid way to run your business, and a Partnership Agreement is certainly essential if you are running a business together with other people not in a company. As the business world adopts however, Shareholder Agreements, also known as Shareholder Deeds or Buy/ Sell Agreements are an essential part to any business that is run via a company with multiple people involved. A Shareholder Agreement allows you to document the following: • The manner and value at which any shares will be transferred if one of the shareholders departs. • Funding arrangements such as insurance to ensure that if a shareholder does depart the remaining or new shareholders can afford to buy them out in the event of death or total or permanent disability. • The method for determining the

value of the shares and the business as a whole if an agreement cannot be reached. • Restraint clauses to ensure that a departing shareholder is restricted in their ability to take clients with them or set up competing businesses. • Provide options for remaining shareholders to have first priority when purchasing a departing shareholder’s shares to ensure that they remain in business with the people of their choosing. Shareholder Agreements take many different forms and are quite complex documents. They are however essential if you wish to run a business through a company. One of the most significant informal advantages of such a document is that it also allows all of the partners in the business to sit down and get their ideas out so that everybody is on the same page. If you have an existing business that is run through a company with multiple people as shareholders, or if you are thinking of starting a new business, contact us today to discuss a Shareholder Agreement. It is also important that you speak to your Accountant and your Financial Planner in relation to this process to ensure that things like insurance and capital gains tax are adequately considered throughout the process. In short, having the right documentation in place is critical to running a partnership or company.

Vital men like to sing and it’s especially rewarding to sing with other vigorous men who enjoy a good tune and good company and in pleasant rehearsal surroundings, with the occasional public performance. Don’t fall for the old malarkey of “I can’t sing”. Believe us - it’s not true! Like most other things, it’s just a matter of a little help and you’ll be treading the boards with the others and enjoying yourselves with appreciative audiences. Trust us - we know how to sing and you’ll wonder why you’ve never done it before! The Great Western Male Choir has been singing in the Penrith/St Marys area for years. We’ve sung in clubs, entertained in hospitals, assisted charities and enjoyed every minute! The Great Westerners meet locally on a Friday evening for rehearsals. In performance all members are provided with smart uniforms, and you’ll enjoy the camaraderie – DON’T PUT IT OFF!

ne thing Lindsay MP Emma Husar doesn’t have to change in her new office is the bright red Labor-coloured walls, that were left from former MP David Bradbury. Joined by Lindsay’s first MP, Ross Free, Ms Husar marked the official opening of her new headquarters at 331 High Street, Penrith on Tuesday. “This office is going to become a hub for all the issues that matter to us here in Lindsay,” she said. “Obviously the issues that we look after
here are at a Federal level, but we are certainly happy to tackle any of the State issues.” Mr Free said times have changed since he was Lindsay’s MP from 1984 to 1996, and agreed Ms Husar has a range of challenges ahead of her. “You could buy a house for $60,000 and parking wasn’t a problem,” he told the Weekender. “Now it’s a place where working at providing local jobs is more important than ever.” Ms Husar will split her time between the High Street office and her duties in Parliament in Canberra.

Positive signs for new cancer drug Doctors hopeful that new drugs will improve outcome for pancreatic cancer sufferers JADE ALIPRANDI
ancer researchers at the University of New South Wales have developed a promising technology to deliver gene-silencing drugs to treat pancreatic cancer. The most chemo-resistant and deadly cancer in Australia, lead researcher Dr Phoebe Phillips has been working in the field of pancreatic cancer for the past 16 years. While there hasn’t been much of a breakthrough in treatment options, Dr Phillips said this discovery has given her and pancreatic cancer patients new hope. “We’ve tested about 30 different systems, and have tested this new nanomedicine in mice only, and the results are showing the tumours are reducing in size,” she told the Weekender. Penrith Nurse, Karen Liccioni, has been battling pancreatic cancer since the beginning of this year and is currently on two types of chemotherapy treatment. She said while she may never get the chance to try this new treatment, she hopes it will help others. “The research is so interesting and I think it could be such a good thing for
C

people with pancreatic cancer,” she told the Weekender. “It’s frustrating as a patient that we can’t have this treatment now but obviously that’s how it is.” The best treatment available for pancreatic cancer patients can only prolong life by about 16 weeks, with most patients succumbing to the disease withing three to six months of diagnosis. Dr Phillips said that since the discovery of the treatment, she has been contacted by over 200 patients who want to take part in a trial. However, the research into the treatment will take around seven to 10 years to fully complete, especially where funding is concerned. “Phase one of a physical trial costs around $20 million to do and then if you discover your treatment isn’t toxic and you get to move into phase two, you’re looking at about $100 million,” Dr Phillips said. The next step for researchers is to try and tailor the treatment to a particular patient, given pancreatic cancer symptoms, tumours and treatment options vary in everyone who has it. If you want to find out more contact Dr Phillips at p.phillips@unsw.edu.au.

Airport
Flight paths aim to reduce disruption • Latest airport EIS released • Blaxland merge points axed • Rail links still a major discussion point DALE DRINKWATER
he Federal Government claims to have listened to the community in regards to the new airport at Badgerys Creek by removing single merge points over residential areas, including the controversial points in Blaxland. The new flight paths were outlined in the Final Badgerys Creek Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) released last Thursday. A discussion paper was also released last week that recommended rail links between the future Western Sydney Airport (WSA) and other areas across Sydney. Minister for Urban Infrastructure, Paul Fletcher, said in addition to setting out that there will be no single merge points over residential communities and none over Blaxland, the EIS sets out new noise guidelines. “The final EIS sets out an important preferred option for ‘head to head operations’ during evening hours (11pm to 6am) as a means of minimising the number of homes affected by aircraft noise at night,” he said. “Head to head operations will involve
T
Progress on plans for the new airport at Badgerys Creek continues to be made flights both taking off to, and landing from, the southwest of the runway in circumstances where it is safe to do so.” He said there is more detailed work to
do to analyse weather and safety, but this operating mode could be available over 80 per cent of the time. In the discussion paper for a rail link from
the airport, Mr Fletcher said the options were designed to connect key areas of a growing western Sydney. “Among other proposals, there have been calls for an express train running east-west between WSA and the Sydney CBD, as well as for a suburban train running north-south from Campbelltown to Rouse Hill via WSA,” he said. Penrith Mayor, Karen McKeown, said a north-south rail link is transformative, and other options such as a fast link to Parramatta and onto the Sydney CBD is a slap in the face for hundreds of thousands of people who travel away from Penrith for work each day. “Western Sydney is already chronically under serviced by public transport – unless you travel east to the Sydney CBD. It’s almost impossible to travel south west or north west via public transport,” she said. “I know most people in our community would be gravely offended if the State and Federal Government decided it’s OK for us to wear all the impacts of an airport but see none of the benefits.” The consultation period for the Western Sydney Rail Needs Study Discussion Paper is open now via www.westernsydneyrail. transport.nsw.gov.au.

Police happy with festival behaviour 25,000 people dance the weekend away at Defqon.1 event at Regatta Centre in Penrith JADE ALIPRANDI
olice have praised the behaviour of party goers at this year’s Defqon.1 dance music festival despite 82 people being arrested at the event. Almost 25,000 people converged on the Sydney International Regatta Centre for the popular annual festival. 82 people were arrested throughout the day, with 77 arrested for drug related offences, including six people charged with supplying a prohibited drug, while five people were arrested for anti-social offences and stealing. More than 200 people received medical treatment for drug and heat-related illnesses with six of those people taken to Nepean Hospital for further treatment. Crime Manager at Penrith Police Station, Detective Chief Inspector Grant Healey, told the Weekender it’s always unfortunate when people continue to take drugs at these festivals. “It’s disappointing when people continue to play with the lottery of life over drugs,” he said. “With so many people at this year’s event, the crowd’s behaviour was generally good.”

True to form, this year’s theme is ‘The Horse and Human Partnership’, and will have riding demonstrations from pony club gymkhana to medieval knights on horseback. There’s fun and frivolity for everyone, including demonstrations from internationally recognised trainer Scott Brady, and pony rides for kids under 12. Starting at 1pm at RDA Nepean’s riding facility on Samuel Marsden Road in Orchard Hills, the event doesn’t finish until 9pm that night, with festivities such as live music and dancing to keep the fun going. Cruel rules leave Sarah fighting a losing battle JADE ALIPRANDI
magine being sick with no energy, living in fear of dying, and being chained to a machine for more than 15 hours a week, all while knowing there is a way of fixing it that you can’t access. This is the issue facing 29-year-old former Penrith resident, Sarah Grant, who suffers from the ultra-rare genetic disease Atypical hemolytic-uremic syndrome (aHUS). The disease acutely damages major organs like the kidneys, liver, heart and brain due to blood clots in small blood vessels, and can cause death through strokes, kidney failure and heart attacks. Ms Grant receives dialysis for 15 hours a week, which she says sucks all her energy out and leaves her weak, but there is a way we can all help her. Known as eculizumab, and sold under the name Soliris, this drug is the only one that will stop aHUS from attacking someone’s organs, but isn’t accessible for Ms Grant. “It’s incredibly frustrating knowing I can’t get it but it’s out there,” Ms Grant told the Weekender.
I
“It could dramatically change my life but I can’t receive it because I’m still on dialysis. “The only way I can get off dialysis is to have a transplant, and the only way to have a transplant is to have this drug which I can’t have – I don’t want to live on a machine for the rest of my life.” One of the lucky recipients of the drug was ironically Ms Grant’s older sister, Rebecca, who was diagnosed with the disease two years ago. Because she was in the early stages, she didn’t require a transplant and was given access to Soliris. In January 2014 the NSW Government made the decision to fund Soliris for a small number of aHUS patients who met “defined clinical criteria”, like Rebecca. Those who had already lost their kidneys due to their aHUS, and were on dialysis in need of a kidney transplant, have been denied funding, like Sarah. With almost 50,000 signatures, Ms Grant is trying to attract the attention of the NSW Government to have them fund the drug for others in the same situation as her. She is determined to win the battle and go on to live a normal, long life. “I don’t want to die young,” she said.
“I want to be a functioning member of society, leading a relatively normal life – it’s no way for a young person to live.” If you want to help Ms Grant and others in the same position, visit www.change. org and search Soliris to sign her petition. Congratulations to all those people who have been elected to serve the upcoming term as a Penrith City Councillor. I see from the election results that a number of the same old faces have gained office again but there are quite a few newbies. The re-elected Councillors have business experience and a good knowledge of how local government works but what about the others? What qualifications do they have that will ensure their meaningful contributions to the efficient running of our great City? Being a Penrith City Councillor is a great honour and one which should not be used as a tool of influence. The Councillors are ‘public servants’ when all is said and done and they must act accordingly. KEITH EVERETT, WERRINGTON COUNTY

During Dementia Awareness Month, which runs throughout September, Alzheimer’s Australia is calling for greater awareness and understanding of Dementia so people living with the condition feel less isolated and alone. There are more than 353,000 Australians with Dementia and an estimated 1.2 million people involved in the care of someone with Dementia. In the Penrith electorate there are an estimated 850 people living with Dementia. That figure is projected to
increase to about 3,150 by 2050. A survey just released by Alzheimer’s Australia has found that people with Dementia are almost twice as likely to have high rates of loneliness, and people with Dementia and carers are significantly more lonely than the general population. We hear repeatedly that when someone is diagnosed with Dementia, friendships and some family relationships suddenly disappear because people simply don’t know how to interact with their friend or loved one with Dementia. Treating people with the same respect, kindness, inclusiveness and thoughtfulness you always have is what makes a difference to them. They are still the same person they were before the diagnosis. They just may need a little bit more time, understanding and support. JOHN WATKINS, ALZHEIMER’S AUSTRALIA

record number of students have finished up school this week ahead of their HSC exams, including international twins Arpannoor Kaur and Armannoor Kaur from St Marys Senior High School. After moving to Australia in 2008 from India, both Arpannoor and Armannoor, 17, agree that school life in Australia is much easier than it was in India. The duo both hope to move into the medical industry and say they have been working hard together to achieve it. “We have been really supporting each other and helping each other and it’s good because we can share notes,” Armannoor said. “What we learnt in Year 6 here, we learnt in Year 3 over there so it has been a bit easier on us and it’s good that we have been able to go through it together,” Arpannoor said. While the two help each other, they also admit that their schooling can become competitive. “It’s great working together but it’s also a competition at the same time – we will be working hard to beat each other,” Arpannoor said. Doing five subjects, the pair are in the same classes except for maths.

room full of almost 60 excited 11 to 12-year-olds dressed as pirates isn’t everyone’s ideal mid-week experience, but there was something special about St Joseph’s Primary School students this week. They were getting ready for this year’s first musical performance, ‘Pirates of the Curry Bean’, on Tuesday night when the Weekender visited the school. The Year 5 and 6 students had been practicing almost every school day for over two terms for their two performances this

week, which began with twins Jack and Liza Periwinkle finding a treasure map. Brock Rodziewicz was the bad guy, a pirate and captain of the Curry Bean, who stole the treasure map off the twins and kidnapped their mother, Pearl, aka Cleo Brennan. “I’m Captain Redbeard, but my beard is pink,” he said before adding, “I’m being a disgusting pirate, as I should be.” This year’s pirate themed performance was the school’s annual play, that students said gave them an opportunity to show off their skills and build on more to continue their dreams of becoming actors and actresses.
The Kaur twins are about to tackle the HSC. Photo: Melinda Jane The pair say they are thankful for each other and their school friends. “Our friends are like our family – when Arpannoor needs help I’m there and when I need help Arpannoor is there and it’s the same with our friends,” Armannoor said. There are 3395 students in Penrith, St Marys, the Blue Mountains and Richmond who will be sitting the HSC exams in October.

Are you driving blind on our roads? JADE ALIPRANDI
ore than two million motorists in Australia don’t wear their glasses while driving, despite having a prescription to do so. St Marys Specsavers Optometrist, Adrian Yap, is joining the campaign and calling on all motorists to make sure they have clear vision before getting behind the wheel. The campaign comes in response to new research from Specsavers, which reveals that over a quarter of those who wear prescription glasses admit to driving a vehicle even though they don’t have their glasses with them. Mr Yap said the number of people who don’t use their prescribed glasses for driving is a concern not only to themselves, but to those around them. “As an optometrist, I find the number of Australian motorists driving without their prescription glasses worrying,” he said. “I recommend that all motorists have an eye test every two years and carry the right prescription eye wear with them at all times when on the road.” The research also found more than six million motorists say they have trouble seeing while driving. Difficulties reading road signs from a distance and straining their eyes while trying to read road maps were cited as key problems by motorists.

To say that it’s been a real privilege to be Mayor of Penrith City for the past 12 months seems inadequate. I’ve enjoyed working alongside the community, my fellow Councillors and fabulous staff to realise our vision for a sustainable, financially stable and culturally vibrant Penrith. As a Council, we can look back with great pride. We’ve upgraded and enhanced local infrastructure. We’ve streamlined our organisation and worked more collaboratively with our community than ever before. We’ve made great strides in advocating for improved services and infrastructure in the past 12 months. In particular: • the State Government starting work on the pedestrian bridge across the Nepean River • State and Federal Government’s commitment of $100 million to widen Mulgoa Road to six lanes between Glenmore Parkway and Blaikie Road • the State Government’s $407 million commitment to improve rail services, including more frequent trains on the Western Line • a critical North-South rail line con-
necting outer western Sydney and the airport with the Western Line. The Neighbourhood Renewal Program has, once again, allowed us to bring new life to well-established parts of our city. This includes the ongoing North St Marys Matters project and the Magnetic Places project, ‘Our Place, Our Space’ in Cranebrook, which has made creative use of Cranebrook’s public spaces. There has been a continuing trend of community collaboration in the past 12 months – including the Penrith Mayoral Challenge. I was thrilled to launch the upgraded playground at Barr and Bass Street Reserve in April. We worked with an inspirational group of primary and secondary school students from Colyton to transform this public space. We’re now working with students from Kingswood Primary to redesign the playground at Chapman Gardens. The Team Colyton initiative has similarly led to great results and is already bringing about positive change for this community.
CR KAREN MCKEOWN Mayor of Penrith
The huge elephant in the room is knowing that one day we will cease to exist. Our inherent squeamishness around talking about the practicalities of death is on the decline, where the Baby Boomers particularly are freely talking about how they plan to go. The families who come to us in their time of need are from all walks of life. They are people who are in an incredibly vulnerable position and want to arrange a farewell with simplicity and with someone they can trust. The cost of life’s final unavoidable journey continues to rise, however you can do something about that now. When you prearrange and prepay a funeral, you can leave your loved ones with fond memories, not the cost of a funeral. Prepaying your funeral with Simplicity Funerals is not only one way to protect your family from having to find funds at a difficult time; in many cases it will also be the best way to achieve this. When you prepay a funeral you are locking in today’s price, which means you are protected from inflation. Along with this protection, you will also have the added benefit of knowing the price up front and, when paid in full, there is no more to pay. Compare this with, say, a funeral insurance policy where you may face ongoing premiums that will add up over time – this means you can end up paying more for the funeral insurance policy than the value of the actual funeral.
Simplicity Funerals is also able to offer you the financial benefit that only comes from dealing with the champion of the affordable funeral. Simplicity Funerals specialises in providing respectful funeral services that won’t break the bank. This becomes of greater importance when your funds are limited due to other financial commitments, or when you are on a fixed income. Did you know that if you don’t have a pre-paid funeral and don’t have the financial capacity to pay for a loved one’s funeral, we may be able to assist you access your own or a family members Super, to fund a funeral through the Government Early Release Superannuation Program? This is one of the many reasons you should speak to Simplicity Funerals and learn more about arranging a funeral you can afford. Additionally, when the time comes, your family and loved ones will have a caring and experienced funeral director from Simplicity Funerals by their side, to help them in their time of need, and to respectfully conduct the funeral according to your wishes.

ADVERTORIAL
For all of the families we have the honour of serving, we also offer a free online memorial service through Heaven Address, a website where family and friends can write tributes, messages, light a candle or send virtual flowers regardless of where you are in the world. Simplicity Funerals has more than 35 years’ experience in arranging prepaid funerals and for delivering those services with dignity, exceptional care and respect. Footy legend inspires job seekers Steve Mortimer calls by Penrith to address local Indigenous residents desperate to find work NATHAN TAYLOR
anterbury Bulldogs legend Steve Mortimer visited Penrith last week to speak to local Indigenous people about finding employment. Working as an Ambassador for Max Employment, the former international playmaker addressed a group of 30 at the job agency’s High Street-based office last Wednesday morning. The 60-year-old, who played 272 games for Canterbury, did his best to encourage and motivate the group about ways to find work as well as how to utilise the various services available to them. “We invited our Indigenous clients, that are on our case load here at Max Employment, to meet with local providers that look after them in regards to Indigenous employment opportunities and other services,” Max Employment Business Manager, Kristy Day said. “Penrith Council was also here today as well as a number of training providers who came in to discuss what current opportunities are available to these clients.” Ms Day said meetings like last week’s are held on a regular basis at Max Employment to connect their Indigenous clients with

One of Max Employment’s recent success stories was that of Kingswood’s Jennifer Roberts. Unable to find a job since April 2013, Ms Roberts finally managed to secure fulltime work thanks to her Max Employment case worker Melissa Mann.
“I’d been out of work for a few years and Melissa, my case worker, helped me apply for a couple of jobs,” she said. “We sent an application to Broadspectrum. They asked me to attend an interview and then hired me on the spot. “Soon I’ll be a Team Leader at a call centre in Parramatta dealing with complaints.”
Ms Roberts said she’d been looking for office administration positions for a number of years but was never successful. “I did gain some interviews but it was just so competitive,” she said. “This job I have now is not a stepping stone – it’s something I can make a career out of, make a life out of.”

Ms Elliott was nominated by a midwifery student for the NSW Health Excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Awards in the Registered Midwife category. One of 11 winners, Ms Elliott was selected from 32 finalists that were chosen from 244 nominees from across the state. “It was a huge honour to be nominated by a student – to be paid that compliment was amazing,” Ms Elliott told the Weekender. Working in Nepean Hospital’s Birth Unit, midwifery is a career Ms Elliott always saw herself doing. “I love every part of my work, I wanted to be a midwife since school, it was always my goal,” she said. “I just wanted to work with mothers and babies, and I love working with the students helping them learn. “I’m passionate about midwifery and providing quality care to our women.” Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health

A bicycle challenge as big as Mount Everest
Jonathon Mascorella during the challenge JADE ALIPRANDI
iding 120 kilometres and climbing 4,500 metres over nine hours is no easy feat, but for Glenmore Park local Jonathon Mascorella, it became a reality. The challenging bicycle ride was taken on by over 65 people to help raise funds for the Cancer Council NSW, with Mr Mascorella coming away from the experience with almost $1000 raised. The 8848 Royal National Park event is held at Garie Beach Road in the Royal National Park, Sydney, and takes on the idea of riding up Mount Everest. While some riders finished, Mr Mascorella told the Weekender many didn’t make it all the way as it was a lot more challenging than they first thought. “It was an amazing experience but I think a lot of people, myself included, underestimated just how challenging it would be,” he said. “The hardest part was getting over 15 laps, especially when one lap is around
R
3km long on an average of nine per cent gradient.” Mr Mascorella said he took on the challenge because cancer has touched his life in a number of ways as both his dad and grandfather have suffered from it and he also lost a colleague to the deadly disease. “It’s a really significant condition that is treatable but they need a lot more research into it and the only way to get research is to raise funds,” Mr Mascorella said. “I’m definitely keen to give the challenge a go again next year after I put some more training in.” Mr Mascorella drank some 15 litres of water in the process of completing the challenge. While it was tough, he said it was a great accomplishment. “I feel really good and accomplished that I attempted a half Everest and I’m glad I got to raise the funds in the process,” Mr Mascorella said. To find out more about the challenge or to register your interest, visit www. mm.events/ride-8848.

ow in its eighth year, the Sydney Blues and Roots Festival, held in historic Windsor, has announced its exciting line-up for the October 27-30 event. This year the Sydney Blues and Roots Festival is FREE to all who want to attend, with the exception of the dinner/shows at the Windsor Function Centre, Windsor Public School or prestigious Blues Cruises on the Hawkesbury Paddlewheeler. Venues include the Hawkesbury Hotel, the Bowling Club, Windsor Public School and the Function Centre all located around the McQuade precinct. A stellar line-up sets the scene for a momentous Sydney Blues and Roots Festival. Promoters have been working tirelessly to arrange over 60 bands for the best line-up ever, including headliner, American blues guitarist Chris Cain. Cain’s jazz-tinged, blues-soaked guitar and deep, warm vocals have been described as having the maturity and authenticity of blues legend B.B. King.
Another artist rocking Windsor next month is none other than Aussie rocker Diesel. Along with this great line-up there are also some brilliant offers, one of which being the new VIP Card, which can be purchased from www.SydneyBluesandRootsFestival.oztix.com.au for just $99. The VIP Card will give you tickets to shows, including the ‘Blues Awards’ night on October 27 at the Sebel Resort and Spa in Windsor, huge discounts on ticketed shows, free admission to the Roc Boots Stage on Friday night, a year’s subscription to Rhythms Magazine, discounted drinks and meals at participating restaurants and cafes, merchandise, camping and so much more! ost often, business advice is full of things that you should do. But sometimes it is good to know what not to do, and what mistakes to avoid. Keep decision making simple. When I send a client the first concepts for a logo, I advise them not to show those concepts to others. My advice is always to wait until the concept has been honed to a more final stage, and then gather feedback. And I strongly advise them to seek feedback from the ‘right’ people (for example, people within their target market). Otherwise, you waste time considering opinions from irrelevant sources. The same is true of any business decision. I am not advocating ignoring other people’s advice entirely, but by soliciting feedback from the most relevant people, you will have higher quality feedback on which to base your decision. Avoid constant idea generation. I am not suggesting that you should stop dreaming big and coming up with new ideas for your business.
S
But some business owners are too busy thinking of the next idea, and don’t spend time to make any of them a reality. It can be counterproductive to throw ideas into the mix faster than you can put them into action. The ‘lightbulb’ moment for your business won’t be the initial idea, it will be the realisation of how to turn that idea into a successful outcome. Know when to quit. This can be difficult to discern. Most business owners are wired to want to succeed and are determined to make their business ‘work’. We all know it takes tremendous amounts of blood, sweat and tears to succeed. But we all need to know the limits, which are going to be different for each of us. If you have become someone that you no longer recognise or someone you don’t want to be; if you have lost your passion for your work; if you have no time for anything other than your business; these may be signs that it is time to quit. Or at the very least, to take some time out from your business to regain what you have lost.
napchat is a free mobile app which was designed to create compilations of photos and 10 second videos, known as ‘Snaps’ that can be posted onto your ‘Story’ for all of your friends to see. After 24 hours, your snap will automatically disappear from your story, never to be seen again. Instead of posting to your story, you can also send your snap to selected friends, which will be deleted as soon as it is viewed. The app allows you to get creative with your snaps by adding text, filters, free hand drawing, editing your videos to play in slow and fast motion, and gives you an option to apply a cartoon or interactive animation to your face. Snapchat is the most casual and relaxed social media app, and because snaps delete quickly and automatically, it creates a sense of urgency within its users. This being said, it is no surprise that within Snapchat’s 150 million users, 41 per cent are 18-34-year-olds. If your target market is in this age demographic, you should definitely consider adding Snapchat to your social

media strategy for your business. Snapchat has recently introduced a paid ad function which appears between stories when you are transitioning from one person’s story to another. Viewers can then swipe to access an extended video, a website or download an app. Studies show that Snapchat Ads have twice the visual effect over Facebook and 1.5 more times than Instagram, along with 1.3 more than YouTube (which is the world’s most popular video platform). Geofilters are custom graphics which are displayed over the top of a snap and are available for your business from $5. If you customise a geofilter, all active users in your selected location can choose this graphic to display over their image or video, which will essentially promote your business to everyone who views their snaps. To interact effectively with your viewers, try sharing exclusive Snap coupon codes, behind the scenes footage of an event or a regular day in your business as well as sneak peeks and Q&A’s. SEASON REVIEW Nathan Cleary had a strong debut season. Photo: Jeff Lambert / Penrith Panthers
TROY DODDS @troydodds
I A year to
remember
t may have ended with disappointment, but Penrith’s 2016 season could well be remembered as the beginning of an exciting era at the foot of the Mountains. A year that both started and finished in the nation’s capital was highlighted by the emergence of a young superstar halfback, the maturing of a rookie captain and the building of a squad that has premiership potential written all over it. But when season 2016 got underway at GIO Stadium back on the first Saturday in March, nobody could have imagined the evolution the team would go through over the following six months. With Will Smith lining up for an injured Matt Moylan at fullback, the Panthers started the season minus their new captain but with veterans Jamie Soward and Peter Wallace in the halves, and James Segeyaro at hooker. It was a combination most expected to last for the bulk of the season, but disruption hit early when Segeyaro suffered a broken arm in the 30-22 loss to the Raiders, forcing a re-shuffle the next week. With Tyrone Peachey shifting to hooker, the Panthers returned home for Thursday Night Football keen to avenge the opening round loss, but instead were on the end of a heartbreaking finish when the Bulldogs
scored a try in the dying moments to level the game. Rookie Kerrod Holland slotted the conversion and the Panthers were none from two to start the year. For Penrith, close games would dominate the opening nine rounds of the competition with not one match having more than five points in it at full-time between rounds two to nine. The result of that was some thrilling wins – such as the impressive 23-22 come from behind victory against Brisbane in round three and the last minute win over Parramatta in round five – as well as some devastating losses, such as a 20-18 defeat at the hands of Cronulla in round eight. While some would say Penrith’s incredible finish to the year ensured them a Finals spot, truth is that a run in the middle part of the season where the side played four straight games away from Pepper Stadium would ultimately play a key role in the side finishing inside the top eight. The Panthers won three of those games (against the Roosters at Allianz Stadium, Canberra in Bathurst and the Warriors in Christchurch), surviving a horror stint on the road and instilling some belief both within the squad and the fan base itself, which had been unnecessarily brutal in those opening rounds out of the competition. Penrith went into round 11 sitting in seventh position, but the next two games would prove season-defining. After a shock 28-24 loss to the Titans at home (which would also see Peta Hiku suffer a season-ending knee injury), coach

Anthony Griffin started tinkering with the squad. With one eye on saving the 2016 season and another on the future, he gave 18-year-old Nathan Cleary his debut in the most toughest of circumstances – a trip to AAMI Park in Melbourne. With Hiku now gone, it also saw a new centre partnership form in the shape of Waqa Blake and Tyrone Peachey, who both played scintillating football in the back end of the season. The Melbourne game would prove to be the last for veteran half Jamie Soward, who was sensationally dropped to reserve grade, with Cleary keeping his spot in the halves and Bryce Cartwright moving from the back row to five-eighth. It created a new ‘spine’ for the round 14 game against Manly at Brookvale Oval – Matt Moylan at fullback, Cartwright at five-eighth, Cleary in the number 7 jumper and Wallace finding a new lease on life at dummy half. After a rocky first half against the battling Sea Eagles, the new-look Panthers sprung to life in the second half, ultimately winning 31-24 and justifying some of the big calls made by coach Griffin in the leadup to the match. While there would be some hiccups between that stirring win over Manly and the end of the regular season, the Panthers seemed to find their mojo with their newlook team. Its youth and inexperience would show at times (such as in round 17, when the side went down 34-26 to the Wests Tigers at ANZ Stadium), but impressive wins over Souths and Parramatta
Best of the best Player of the Year: Matt Moylan Rookie of the Year: Nathan Cleary Try of the Year: Peter Wallace (v Bulldogs in Elimination Final) Moment of the Year: Te Maire Martin’s field goal against Brisbane in round three
Bryce Cartwright. Photo: Megan Dunn helped keep the side in touch with the Finals. Perhaps Penrith’s best win of the season came in round 20, when they completely dismantled Brisbane 31-12 at Suncorp Stadium with a brutal defensive effort and some impressive tries, including a memorable runaway effort from Waqa Blake. A Golden Point loss to the Warriors followed that win, but the Panthers would then go on an impressive winning streak to end the regular season – thrashing the Roosters, Knights and Tigers to secure their Finals spot before getting home 15-14 over the Titans and then hammering Manly 36-6. Finishing the year in sixth spot, the Panthers travelled to Allianz Stadium for
a ‘home’ Final against Canterbury, and proved they were the real deal in 2016, winning 28-12 and producing a master game plan that saw the big Bulldogs pack out on their feet by the end of the game. The hype that followed that big win ultimately proved part of Penrith’s downfall, with the side going down to Canberra 22-12 in their final game of the year last weekend. The 2016 result was tremendous given the youth of Penrith’s team and the often overlooked injury issues the side faced. Penrith finished the season without their two starting centres in Dean Whare and Peta Hiku, and minus big-name props Sam McKendry and Reagan CampbellGillard. They were significant losses.

While the year didn’t finish with a premiership trophy, there is no question that 2016 was a defining year for Penrith and one that could well have been a preview of what’s to come over the next few seasons. PANTHER RUMBLINGS with The Masked Panther
END OF CAT SUIT? » You can expect the look of a number
of things at Panthers to change next year, including the cheerleader uniforms. I’m told that the Pantherettes won’t be in their ‘cat suit’ next year and will have an all new look. The ‘cat suit’ was the brainchild of former Panthers marketing guru Anthony Frantzis and has been used for the past three seasons.
» As I revealed earlier this year, you can
» Well done to the vast majority of the
playing group last Saturday night who came over to the fans who had travelled for so long to support them. A number of players took off their boots and handed them to kids in the Penrith crowd, while a few tears were shed by a couple of players including Josh Mansour and Leilani Latu.
» Rumour has it that a number of injured
expect a brand new Panthers jersey in 2017 too. I’m told it is likely to be a throwback to the 1991 premiership jersey and a sneak peek at the new Panthers membership site suggests this will definitely be the case, with the classic red, yellow and green making an appearance.
Penrith players were watching last Saturday night’s Semi Final against Canberra from a local pub, and didn’t appear all that interested in the game. Fans who spotted them suggested on social media that half-way through the first half, the players headed off to play the poker machines and put a few bets on at the TAB.
» Members will have until November 10
» As much as I think the current Finals
to renew their existing seats for the 2017 season, which will again feature 10 games at Pepper Stadium. The membership team is also re-introducing a Membership Pack instead of a merchandise voucher as part of next year’s packages, with both an adult and junior Membership Pack available. At first glance it appears the pack includes a cap, stubby holder, coffee thermos, key ring, sticker and lanyard.
» I’m told the Panthers are just weeks
away from confirming new deals for Bryce Cartwright and Matt Moylan. As I reported recently, both have been linked to multi-million dollar extended deals at the club, and I’m told the ink is almost dry on contracts for the duo.
» Matt Moylan has joined the Australian
Prime Minister’s XIII as the team prepares for the match against the PNG Prime Minister’s XIII on Saturday afternoon in Port Moresby.
system is better than the old McIntyre system, it does have some flaws. Maybe I’m just being a one-eyed Penrith supporter, but I can’t see how it’s fair that a team losing in week one of the Finals is rewarded with another home game in the second week (as was the case for Canberra). Penrith meanwhile win their match, but their reward is a trip to Canberra. Perhaps something needs to be done to make week two a little fairer.
» An average audience of 488,000
watched Penrith’s clash with Canberra on Channel Nine on Saturday night. Not surprisingly it was well out-rated by the Broncos/Cowboys clash on Friday night which had a free-to-air average audience of 733,000 including a whopping 446,000 in Brisbane. Figures on Fox Sports were also impressive – 331,000 for Friday night and 319,000 for Saturday.
» Spotted: Sam McKendry and his family
taking a stroll through Westfield Penrith on Monday.
» Spotted: NRL CEO Todd Greenberg at
QT in Canberra after the game on Saturday night. The head honcho had a quiet drink before retiring to his room, while a number of dedicated Penrith fans (including a few members of the Captain’s Club) partied into the night.

Five storylines that
defined season the
TROY DODDS @troydodds
TEEN STAR’S IRONIC RISE TO FIRST GRADE Nathan Cleary wasn’t even featured in the 2016 Season Guide for Penrith, but he ended up playing a key role in guiding them to Finals football in 2016.
Last October the Cleary household was rocked when Dad Ivan was sacked by the Panthers and replaced with Anthony Griffin as head coach. But six months later a new story was emerging from within the Cleary fold when 18-year-old Nathan was handed his first grade debut. Too young? Too inexperienced? The obvious potential issues with blooding a halfback so young were there for all to see, but Cleary showed no signs of pressure and didn’t look back once given his debut against Melbourne half-way through the season. The teenager knows he wouldn’t have been handed his first grade debut so early if his Dad was still coaching, so the irony of his rise to Penrith’s famous number seven jumper is incredible. A Dally M Rookie of the Year contender, Cleary gave Penrith fans a glimpse into the
future (and rugby league fans a throwback to the past given the similarities he shares with his father) with his cool, calm and collected approach to leading the Panthers around the park. The experience he gained in 2016 will put him in huge stead for the future
GRIFFIN’S GAMBLES PAY OFF FOR PENRITH
Just call him Kenny Rogers. Anthony Griffin rolled the dice so many times in season 2016 and most of the time, he came up trumps. Gamble number one was appointing Matt Moylan as captain ahead of experienced campaigners such as Peter Wallace and Trent Merrin. It paid significant dividends with Moylan emerging as a true leader by the time the end of the season rolled around. Then there was the huge decisions to drop big-name players James Segeyaro and Jamie Soward to reserve grade within weeks of each other, ultimately forcing their departures from the club. With the season still alive at the mid-way point of the year, many saw it as a bizarre call for a coach in his first season at the club, but it proved to be a masterstroke. Griffin clearly saw that a change was needed and while he knew criticism from

fans and the media would come, he was willing to back himself. Griffin gambled with 18-year-old Nathan Cleary and won, and perhaps his biggest success story was repairing his fractured relationship with Peter Wallace. Not only did Griffin give Wallace a new lease on life at hooker, but by the end of the year the veteran Penrith junior had signed a new deal with the club. Just like his one-time mentor Wayne Bennett, Griffin is cool and calm under pressure but clearly knows what he wants and has no issue making it happen.
he broke his arm against Canberra in the opening round of the competition. While he did return to first grade, his 2016 season in the NRL was short lived after coach Anthony Griffin dumped him to reserve grade in late May. Apart from his poor form, the Panthers also started to become concerned about Segearyo’s behaviour off the field, particularly after he was featured in an infamous photograph taken at a dinner at The Star casino in Sydney. On June 23, the Panthers officially released Segeyaro so he could take up an opportunity in England. “I want to thank James for his service to the Panthers,” coach Anthony Griffin said. “For the last three and a half seasons he has been a valued member of the club and we wish him all the best for the next chapter in his career.”
Wales in State of Origin this year, it not only gave them an excellent opportunity to play on rugby league’s biggest stage, but it matured them at club level. Both came back from their Origin experience better players, and emerged as two of the most dangerous players in the game. Mansour in particular grew another leg, with his powerful runs at the start of sets becoming a real highlight of his game. Moylan had a delayed start to the season due to injury and had the added pressure of being named captain, but once Origin came around, he took the leadership role to another level and became one of the game’s most feared attacking players. He was named at five-eighth for Origin III in Sydney after initially losing his fullback spot to James Tedesco, and passed the test with flying colours. Both Moylan and Mansour have most likely secured their Origin spots for years to come, and given the way they came back from representative duties this year, there is no doubting Penrith will benefit from any such selections.
THE DRAMATIC FALL OF JAMES SEGEYARO Named Hooker of the Year at the 2014 Dally M Awards, the fall from grace of James Segeyaro at Penrith was startling. After a disappointing 2015 season, Segeyaro was keen to prove his worth at Penrith this season, particularly given his contract was up for renewal. But his year started in disappointing fashion after
PENRITH’S PROUD BLUES When Josh Mansour and Matt Moylan were selected to represent New South
SOWARD’S UNEXPECTED NRL DEPARTURE Panthers coach Anthony Griffin stunned the NRL community back in June when he dumped veteran half Jamie Soward to reserve grade. It was a huge gamble by the man they call ‘Hook’, who favoured a makeshift halves combination of Bryce Cartwright and rookie Nathan Cleary ahead of Soward, who had steered Penrith into the Finals in 2014 but saw his form drop off in 2015. While Soward would turn out to play in reserve grade for the Panthers for a few weeks, the writing was on the wall and he never returned to first grade – his last game being the 24-6 loss to Melbourne in round 13. On June 30, the Panthers and Soward parted ways. “How playing careers begin and end is not an exact science but he has recognised there are a number of emerging talents at the club who deserve the chance to progress,” Panthers boss Phil Gould said at the time. “Jamie has been wonderful for the Panthers and has done everything we have ever asked of him. He has been a leader, on and off the field, and played a key role in the development of our younger players.” Soward signed a deal with the London Broncos, where he played the remainder of the 2016 season. There has been suggestions that Soward is interested in a coaching career and would like to return to the Panthers.

We are very proud of the Penrith Panthers making it so far in the 2016 season. Good luck next year!
with Brad Drew
DOWN TO THE FINAL FOUR A huge congratulations firstly this week must go to the Penrith Panthers for a fabulous season and a gutsy performance against a very determined Raiders team last Saturday evening. The boys put up a brave fight to stage a late comeback, but unfortunately Canberra hung on to get the win. The loss should take nothing away from what Anthony Griffin’s squad have achieved this season and the unearthing of some young blood and the stellar performances from key members of the team should give both the coaching staff and Panthers fans a huge amount of hope and excitement about next season. I wish all the boys a well deserved rest with their families and that they arrive back at pre-season rearing to go. This week’s finals brings two potentially fantastic matches in both Sydney and Melbourne. I am tipping the magic of Johnathan Thurston to be just too much for
Cronulla, but it is sure to be a tight game that should go right down to the wire. The Canberra vs Melbourne match is harder to pick at this stage and I might sit on the fence! What I am expecting though is Ricky Stuart’s boys to be ready for everything the Storm throw at them, but they will know they will have to play out of their skin to outsmart Smith and Cronk. Whatever the results from both matches, all rugby league fans are in for a super weekend of footy. Enjoy the games! To finish again this week, the best of luck to my own St Marys Ron Massey Cup team in their Grand Final at Pirtek Stadium on Sunday afternoon. I am sure they will put in a massive effort to honour the memory of Ron Massey, who passed away earlier this week. If you need another footy fix on Sunday, the boys kick off at 2.15pm. This is the last Drew Review for 2016. Have a great summer!

King of the blues
I
KATE REID
f you’ve never really been a fan of blues music, spend some time talking to Chris Cain and you may just change your mind. With an infectious love of all things blues, the American guitarist has been compared to iconic musicians including the great B.B. King. It’s a fitting compliment considering it was the man himself who was Chris’ main musical inspiration growing up. “I wouldn’t be talking to you on the phone right now, I wouldn’t be doing any of this if it wasn’t for B.B. King,” Chris said on the phone from his home in the United States. “He was the person who made me want to lock myself in my room and just ruin all my records trying to figure out how to make that sound come out of my guitar. I just loved him.” It was Chris’ father who first exposed him to the music of B.B. King and taught him to play the guitar at the tender age of eight. “When my father first showed me how to play he would always say ‘now baby if you don’t feel it don’t do it, but if you feel it then do it’,” Chris said. “From the time when I was nine or 10 I would always play with my feelings so it
just became second nature to me... to try to tap into my heart with whatever I’m trying to play.” That motto has stuck with Chris and launched him into a decades-long career in the music industry that has seen him play to audiences around the world. Next month it will be western Sydney’s turn to experience Chris Cain live when he headlines the Sydney Blues and Roots Festival in Windsor. The majority of the performances – including Chris’ – will be free, making this the perfect opportunity for newcomers to experience the world of blues and roots. Chris says sometimes it’s just a matter of giving his genre of music an opportunity. “I think if you give it a chance and you take the time to listen to it there’s a possibility you might like what you hear and maybe you’ll want to hear more of it,” Chris said. “Especially because it’s being played by people who play with a lot of love.” Huge crowds are expected to attend the Festival next month. The Sydney Blues and Roots Festival will be held in Windsor from Thursday, October 27 to Sunday, October 30. Entry is free, with the exception of the dinner/ shows at the Windsor Function Centre or prestigious Blues Cruises on the Hawkesbury Paddlewheeler. think. Exploring the intersection between these two disciplines is the Penrith Regional Gallery’s new exhibit ‘Gravity (and Wonder)’. The three month program is a collaboration between Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest and the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences. The exhibit will bring together rare scientific instruments, specialist objects and archival material with the works of contemporary artists exploring our relationship with gravity, motion, mass and attraction. Visitors will have the chance to learn more about science and art through a series of events and workshops including Star Gazing in the Gallery Garden on Saturday, October 22 and the Grav-

WINE LIST
DAVID ELLIS
On the rise
A
WW24521
ussie wine buffs it seems, are suddenly discovering Tempranillo, a Spanish red that although being grown in this country on cuttings brought from its motherland around the 1830s, for some reason never really took off. But come the end of the last century things suddenly changed, and to meet newly burgeoning demand the area of vineyards turned over to the variety blossomed in just 10 years from a mere 41ha Australia-wide, to over 475ha by 2010. And sales of resultant wines are today growing at a rate said to be faster than any other variety. One maker with an exceptional Tempranillo is the Clare Valley’s Mr Mick Wines, their currently available 2014 a nicely full-bodied drop with pronounced varietal cherry and strawberry fruit flavours, a hint of spice and a long and lingering finish. And all of which makes for it being a great drop with a homeland favourite, patatas con chorizo – potatoes with chorizo sausage and chilli, that you could possibly say equates to something a bit like Spanish bangers and mash, and a bit spicy. At $17 enjoy it with that homeland dish, or equally with tacos, nachos or burritos. One to note: Tasmanian makers have thrown up some ripper Rieslings over the years. One such maker is Riversdale Estate in the southern Coal River Valley region just 20km out of Hobart, and which has recently released a beautifully rewarding 2013 Riesling under its ultra-premium Cygnus label. Here’s a wine made from fruit harvested in small bunches in peak-condition, and loaded with concentrated varietal characteristics and excellent natural acidity. RRP $34.

OUT NOW WON T UO
DVD The Angry Birds Movie Rated PG // KATE REID
They took over our phone screens and now they’re taking over our TV screens with the release of ‘The Angry Birds Movie’ on DVD and BluRay. The film is set on an island inhabited by flightless birds. Though most of the birds are happy there are a few outsiders who have a much more surly demeanour. Red (Jason Sudeikis), Chuck (Josh Gad) and volatile Bomb (Danny McBride) may be the black sheep of the group but when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, they’re the unlikely heroes called upon to figure out what the pigs are up to. ‘The Angry Birds Movie’ features a whole heap of stars including Maya
Rudolph, Bill Hader, Peter Dinklage, Sean Penn, Kate McKinnon and Tituss Burgess. The soundtrack is a pretty star studded affair as well with tracks from Blake Shelton, Demi Lovato, Charli XCX and Steve Aoki. An app to film adaptation is a clear sign of the times and, while ‘The Angry Birds Movie’ may have received mixed reviews from critics, it’s likely to only be the start of more of these types of app to film crossovers. With the school holidays beginning this weekend, this is the perfect film to distract the kids or even the parents. Grab your copy of ‘The Angry Birds Movie’ in store or online now.
CINEMA Bridget Jones’s Baby Rated M // KATE REID
Woman of God
By James Patterson and Maxine Paetro // KATE REID In the world of literature they don’t get much bigger than James Patterson. The bestselling author has just released his latest thriller Woman of God, a collaboration with writer Maxine Paetro. The story takes place in Rome where crowds are waiting to see the white smoke which signals that a new Pope has been chosen. But it may not be who they expect with one of the candidates – Brigid Fitzgerald – being the potential first female Pope. Unfortunately Brigid has made some powerful enemies and becomes a target for those who fear that she could disrupt longstanding church traditions. In a high-stakes battle against the people who seek to bring her down, Brigid is at risk of losing everything.
One of film’s most iconic and lovable characters is back on the big screen with the release of ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’. In this follow up to 2004’s ‘Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason’, Renee Zellweger reprises her role as Bridget, but
this time the world’s favourite singleton has a new addition to her life. After Bridget breaks up with Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) she finds herself single once again. To take her mind of things she decides to shift her focus to friendships and her job as a news producer. But of course things never run smoothly for Bridget and life takes an unexpected twist when she meets Jack (Patrick Dempsey). After dalliances with her new flame and her ex Mark, Bridget becomes preg-
nant and doesn’t know who the father is. The cast features plenty of familiar faces including Jim Broadbent as Bridget’s dad and Sally Phillips as Bridget’s long-time friend Sharon. It’s been 15 years since Bridget first won the hearts of audiences and there’s likely to be plenty of fans who are eager to see whether ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’ can do the franchise justice. ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’ is currently showing at Hoyts Penrith. BROCK SUNDAY, OCT 9 CHANNEL TEN
Ê Despite some ordinary ratings for ‘Australian Survivor’ and ‘Offspring’ of late, Channel Ten are reportedly set to stick with the two shows for future seasons. It’s understood Ten are happy with the way both shows have performed in their respective demographics despite overall numbers being rather low. Ê Returning to LifeStyle Food on Tuesday, October 7 is the brand new series of ‘The Great Australian Bake Off’. Over 10 episodes, a dozen bakers will create a series of decadent treats that will leave viewers in food heaven. Maggie Beer and Matt Moran return as judges while Claire Hooper and Mel Buttle are back as hosts. The baker that wins the judges’ tastebuds after all 30 challenges will be crowned Australia’s Best Amateur Baker. Ê Channel Ten are finally set to air hugely anticipated mini series ‘Brock’ on Sunday, October 9. The two-part drama stars Matthew Le Nevez (pictured) as Holden Racing legend Peter Brock. The trailer for ‘Brock’ was released online last week to positive reviews. Ê ‘Look Who’s Talking’ star Kirstie Alley is returning to television as a cast member of ‘Scream Queens’. The second
season, which began on ELEVEN this week, relocates from a college campus to a hospital that specialises in fascinating and bizarre medical cases. Other newcomers this season include John Stamos and Taylor Lautner.
with new husband ‘Toadie’. However, her body was never recovered. It’s not known if West will return in a dream sequence or miraculously come back to life but you can find out in December when the episodes air.
Ê Actress Madeline West is returning to ‘Neighbours’. Despite being ‘killed off’ 13 years ago, West will reprise her role as Dee Bliss. West’s character famously vanished in a dramatic scene driving off a cliff as she set off for her honeymoon
Ê Brand new seasons of ‘Arrow’ and ‘Supergirl’ will begin on FOX8 next month. Season five of ‘Arrow’ premieres on Thursday, October 6 at 7.30pm, while ‘Supergirl’ will fly back to screens on Tuesday, October 11 at 8.50pm.

PENRITH’S MOST RESPECTED LINE-UP OF EXPERTS ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
Monday’s Sun/Jupiter link-up ignites your adventurous dare-devil side but slow down and calm down otherwise you’ll come a cropper! Your ruler Mars races into your reputation and career zone from Tuesday until November 9 so expect to be in the public eye in some way. When it comes to work, a strategic approach (with a view to the long-term) is the smart way to go. Friday night’s Libran New Moon encourages you to be a gentle Lamb – rather than a rowdy Ram!

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
Mars charges into your adventure zone on Tuesday so get your passport out of storage, and start planning your next overseas holiday, interstate getaway or weekend escapade. Friday night’s New Moon also provides a shot of adrenalin to tired old routines. Attached Bulls – magical moments are likely on Saturday night, when Venus and Neptune ratchet up the romantic vibes. Singles – be on the lookout for a suave suitor with a head full of schemes and a bag full of dreams.
GEMINI
MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
Monday’s Sun/Jupiter connection increases your Gemini optimism, and decreases your already short attention span. So aim to be generous rather than garrulous; and spontaneous rather than slap-dash. Then the New Moon lights up your creativity zone which highlights self-expression, music, art, drama and entertainment. Friendships are also favoured, as you share fun activities together. But tread carefully with an unpredictable parent or a tearaway teen.

It’s a wonderful week to play Domestic Diva as you clean, de-clutter, and tweak the feng-shui in your home. Motivation is especially high on Monday, when you’re ready to tackle a pile of paperwork or a project that’s been on the backburner. But don’t get so carried away with good intentions that you neglect important details along the way. On the weekend it is time to get talking and make good with a disgruntled family member.

It’s time for listless Lions to get your mojo back as Jupiter gives you an energy boost; you tap into your personal power; and motivation is high. Making lucky connections via social media is particularly favoured. And vigorous physical exercise will also put you in a positive (and frisky) frame of mind. But is a relationship with a relative on rocky ground? If you tune into the harmonious vibes of Friday night’s New Moon, you’ll find calm cooperation will get you a lot further than fireworks!
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
With taskmaster Saturn moving slowly through your sign, it may seem as if problems are meeting you around every corner. But – with the Sun, Jupiter and the New Moon on your side this week – it’s time to make your goals and dreams for the future as big and beautiful as possible. If you do, then mistakes will just motivate you and challenges will spur you on. Be inspired by birthday great, writer Truman Capote, “Failure is the condiment that gives success its flavour.”

Mars moves into Capricorn, which suits work that requires a disciplined mind, good concentration and close attention to detail. Virgo heaven! So don’t waste the chance to get things done. The late week New Moon motivates you to build up your money muscles, and become more financially savvy. When it comes to joint finances, expect the unexpected – and prepare accordingly.
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Mars marches into Capricorn on Tuesday. So it’s time to be even more motivated and career-minded as you initiate ideas, launch projects and zoom ahead with extra energy and plenty of Capricorn chutzpah! But are you pursuing your professional dreams and getting the results you want at work? If not, then some subtle adjustments are needed, as the New Moon urges you to take action. The weekend favours communicating in creative ways.
LIBRA
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
Stylish Librans have a passion for fashion. And this week’s New Moon in your sign is the perfect time for a hot new hairstyle, a marvellous makeup makeover or a creative wardrobe revamp. The weekend is wonderful for candlelit dinners, magical moonlight swims and romantic reveries. Your imagination also takes flight, as you dream big dreams for the future. Just remember to put plans into action. There’s a fine line between creative inspiration and wishful thinking!
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
When it comes to your Aquarian aspirations, you’ll feel restless this week. The Sun and Jupiter boost your bravado, and encourage you to set ambitious goals for the future. Then your education/adventure zone is stimulated by the New Moon so expect a fresh cycle of study, travel or outdoor adventures over the next few months. Come the weekend, the focus is on money matters. You’ll find the more creatively and proactively you nurture your nest egg, the more it will grow.
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
Scorpio is an intense sign of extremes, and life can be exhausting as you hurtle from high drama to drama. With Venus visiting your sign it’s the perfect week to bring more peace, harmony and happiness into your world. Moderation and balance are the keys. So your motto is from birthday great, Indian independence leader Mohandas Gandhi, “Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.”

LIFE & STYLE
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
This week’s stars are incredibly creative but don’t get carried away and blur the boundaries between fact and fantasy. The New Moon lights up your lust zone so, if you’re attached, you can look forward to a racy rendezvous with your beloved. Venus and Neptune activate your travel zone, so a flirtation with a sexy foreigner is likely for some singles. But can you distinguish between a soul mate connection and a dating disaster?

When it comes to eating healthy at work it can sometimes seem like too much hassle. You’re busy, deadlines are looming and taking time out to make a salad is the last thing on your mind. But there’s a few simple tricks to keep work from getting in the way of a healthy lifestyle. Keep nutritious options on hand Open up my desk drawer and you’ll mostly likely find some combination of the following: nuts, roasted chickpeas, cranberries and muesli bars. Keeping a collection of nutri-

Eating healthy while you’re at work tious snacks at your desk, or perishables in a communal fridge, is a good way to manage those 4pm cravings. Eat a well balanced lunch When I worked as a health coach and a client said they often felt hungry again not long after lunch it was almost always because they weren’t having a good protein source with their main meal. Protein helps with satiety so

ensure your lunch includes a high protein ingredient – like lean meat, eggs, tofu, nuts or legumes. Double up your dinners Preparing lunch for work can be as simple as making extra dinner the night before. Up the nutrient quote by adding fresh salad or extra veggies to your meal. Know where to find nutritious takeaway When you do decide to buy lunch it’s good to know where you can get something quick and healthy, especially if you’re busy and plan to eat at your desk. Some of my favourite options are sushi, Subway/sandwich, or a burrito bowl full of high protein beans and salad. Don’t be too strict If there’s birthday cake in the office and you want a piece then have some. Every balanced diet has room for the occasional piece of cake. Healthy eating at work can play a big role in an overall healthy lifestyle.

Move over glitter eyes it’s all about the glitter lip! Since the trend has been popping up all over the place lately celebrities the likes of Bella Hadid, Chrissy Teigan and Naomi Campbell have all been spotted out with these extra shimmery pouts. This eye catching bold lip has a lot to do with international celebrity and runway makeup artist Pat McGrath. She has been in the industry now for years creating stunning makeup looks for Dior and John Galliano couture shows to name a few! Now with her own makeup
line Pat McGrath Labs, she creates online hysteria with her limited edition releases, complete with a countdown so you can get your credit card and speed typing fingers ready. Pat McGrath’s latest product, the Lust004 lip kit comes complete with a vinyl gloss, range of lipstick choices and a microfine multidimensional glitter! If you weren’t lucky
A number of years ago a book was written with the title Christ the Controversialist. This might seem an unusual title as you might be thinking, “What was controversial about Jesus?” Most people today continue to think highly of Jesus; what he said; what he did; what he was on about. Yet, you might be surprised to know that many of Jesus’ contemporaries were alarmed by much of what he said. They found his teaching radical and were keen to keep him quiet.
Jesus raised the bar on relationships

enough to snap up a set you can easily recreate the shimmery must have pout at home perfect for an extra glam Saturday night out. Starting with a lipstick, if you have darker tones for hair like rich brunette and warm skin try a wine coloured lipstick or a peachy nude if you’re blonde and fair, apply to the whole mouth. Next step grab a tacky clear lip gloss and use just a tiny bit to create the perfect hold for glitter to last all night, using a brush and concentrate the product on the inside of the lip blending out to get the perfect lip line. Then taking your ultra fine glitter use your ring finger to roll the product over the lips and tap the colour on, you can then use a smaller brush to help press glitter onto the corners. Perfect jewelled lips!
One of largest “blocks” of Jesus’ teachings is found in the Bible’s “The Sermon on the Mount”. One thing in particular that people found unsettling about Jesus was how he spoke with all the authority of God himself. This meant you could never easily sweep under the carpet anything Jesus said. Here is an example; “You have heard it said, ‘Do not murder’... But I tell you that anyone who is
angry with his brother will be subject to judgment.” Not only did Jesus challenge people about things like anger and hatred, he also spoke on adultery and cheap lust. He challenged the view of some who promoted an easy attitude to divorce, which cheapened the value of marriage. He spoke on the importance of being true to your word and keeping your promises; of not seeking revenge but to love and pray for your enemies. This was and continues to be radical stuff! Jesus raised the bar on relationships. In Jesus’ view, people matter. Relationships matter. Care for people should be given the highest priority. Forgiveness. Patience. Kindness. Gentleness. Self-control. Faithfulness. Perseverance. Humility. Service. Compassion. These are the qualities that make life work. If you seek after Jesus you will find these things.

SPECIAL FEATURE HEALTH & WELLBEING pring has sprung, and with it has come the much dreaded hayfever season. Approximately 15 per cent of all Australians are plagued by a multitude of symptoms including sneezing, nasal congestion, headaches, itchy eyes, ears, nose and throat. Experts have predicted that people will experience worse-than-average symptoms during the hayfever season this year. There has been above-average rainfall this winter, which means increased grass growth leading to more pollen in the air, especially in the months to come. Here are some tips for managing hayfever so you can enjoy the season. Minimise your exposure to allergens – check the pollen count forecast and try to stay indoors on high count days; stay indoors on windy or stormy days; wear sunglasses and wash eyes to flush out pollen; and shower after being outdoors to rinse off any pollen you’ve been exposed to. Know your treatment options – overthe-counter oral antihistamines, of which there are many, are usually the first choice. However, it’s important to remember that some medications work better for some people than others. If one antihistamine doesn’t work for you then try a different one. Decongestant nasal sprays are useful for quick relief. They must not, however, be used for more than three consecutive days as they can damage the lining in nasal passages and can cause congestion instead of relieving it (‘rebound’ congestion). Corticosteroid nasal sprays, on the other hand, should be used regularly. They help prevent and

relieve symptoms by reducing inflammation and mucus in the nose. Finally, if eye irritation is what troubles you most then medicated eye drops may be all you need. Once again, there are many products on the market, but they
will mainly be either an antihistamine alone or an antihistamine-decongestant combination. Remember to always consult your medical practitioner or pharmacist for new medications. Happy spring!

ne Point Sports Medicine prides itself on an expert assessment, an accurate diagnosis and the latest preventative and rehabilitative interventions, which include physiotherapy, chiropractic, exercise physiology, sports podiatry, massage therapy, dietetics and a variety of specialist medical physicians. Our multi-disciplinary team collaborates through the provision of evidence based and expert information to all musculoskeletal injuries for both elite and recreational athletes as well as for injuries that occur at work or during everyday life. We strive to provide the very latest in clinical reasoning through the integration of clinical expertise, evidence based and patient centred care. This means whilst we are fundamentally concerned with a diagnosis and what the tissue in lesion is, we focus more on what impairment you may have. Impairments can include pain, loss of range of motion, weakness, poor endurance and lack of coordination. So when you present with an injury or complaint, we focus more on the impairments that are limiting your activity and restricting your participation in daily life. Let me use an example: A patient presents with back pain, while we do want to know a diagnosis, we want to know what impairments they have. This is because 10 people with back pain will present with many different impairments. Some may have pain, but no loss of range of motion, while others will have stiffness and weakness, others will have too much range of motion and feel weak. Our team then works within their scope

of practice to reduce the impairments and improve participation in daily life. This further emphasises the need for a patient centred approach, because one person’s daily life will differ to another’s. Managing a patient’s impairments to allow them to walk to the shops, will be completely different to managing impairments to allow another to compete in a marathon. One Point Health offers a more diverse range of products and services within a more multi-disciplinary approach to care, with our focus increasingly on prevention, promotion and protection of health, injury and wellness. Our team of practitioners includes the following: Physiotherapy Our team of physiotherapists have over 25 years of experience with a keen focus in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries. Sports Podiatry A branch of podiatry that sees our podiatrists utilise video gait analysis, laser orthotic prescription and advanced biomechanical assessments. Musculoskeletal Chiropractic Our chiropractors apply an integrative evidence based musculoskeletal approach, which sees joint, muscle and exercise techniques utilised to reduce pain and promote movement. Exercise Physiology Our exercise physiologists employ targeted exercise interventions for conditions such as diabetes, arthritis and heart disease. Specialist Medical Practitioners We have onsite specialist practitioners including Sports Physician, Orthopaedic
Surgeons and Cosmetic Surgeon. Massage Therapy Our massage therapists use a variety of techniques such as trigger point, active release, sports, deep tissue and lymphatic drainage. Dietetics Our dietitians are here to guide and inspire you to build healthy lifestyles. At One Point Sports Medicine our difference lies not only in our approach and ability to collaborate, but also in our facilities and use of the very latest in research supported equipment: NordBord – Hamstring Testing System The fastest, easiest and most powerful way to accurately test, monitor, train and rehab hamstring strength. NordBord is currently being used by 13 EPL teams, 12 NFL teams and six NRL teams. Game Ready Ice Compression Game Ready uses cutting edge technology to actively compress and maintain a deeper effective icing strategy to accelerate recovery and reduce pain and swelling. Most often used pre and postsurgery, injury rehabilitation for sprained joints and muscle strains, osteoarthritic knees and to enhance recovery. Fully Equipped Gym The One Point Sports Medicine gym has been fitted out with all the latest cardio and resistance training equipment to ensure you get the very best in exercise prescription for your injury. Video Gait Analysis The coupling of in-depth knowledge and video analysis of the gait cycle during walking or running allows us to be more thorough in assessing your complaint.

ADVERTORIAL
FLOWER TIPS What are the perfect blooms for spring? Prunus Blireana, Wisteria, Daffodils, Aquilegia, Apple blossom; these are some of the spring flowers. Look for bright colours. Purple, white and light pink shades are also perfect for spring. How do you care for cut flowers (does water temperature matter)? The water must be changed on a regular basis with the water temperature being cool. Tips to keep flowers alive for longer: When you receive a bouquet you must water it regularly, keep it in cool water and cut 1cm off the stem on an angle. What should one look for when picking flowers? Depending on the flower it is always good to get a mixture of flowers that are on their way to blooming or are yet to open up. Usually we would recommend asking the staff members as they are professionals and have the best advice to give when purchasing flowers.
KIM NGUYEN FROM THE PLAZA FLOWER SHOP Age: 41 Suburb: Penrith Occupation: Florist at The Plaza Flower Shop Westfield Penrith What do you like about your occupation? Designing flowers and arranging beautiful bouquets for customers How did you get into this line of work? My brother and sister were both florists at the time so I decided to take on the same occupation Qualities someone would need for your job: People usually require creativity and patience to put the perfect bouquet together How long have you been in this job? 10 years Hobbies: Cooking
How do you select the perfect bouquet for each occasion (e.g. Mother’s Day, birthdays etc.)? Depending on the occasion, like if it is for a partner, a large number of customers like to go for roses or peonies. For Mother’s Day customers like to go for the brighter colours. Usually I try to get an understanding of the customer’s personal style and colours or styles of bouquets they like.

oyota Australia’s stunning C-HR will be offered in two premium grades when it arrives in local showrooms during the first quarter of next year. Extroverted exterior styling, an upscale cabin ambiance with superior features, advanced safety and fun-to-drive dynamics will be standard in Toyota’s twopronged approach. The C-HR’s aggressive exterior is the first Toyota to exhibit a diamond architectural theme with faceted gemstone-like shapes, fluid surfaces and elegantly integrated detailing. A sophisticated European-designed interior offers enhanced emotional appeal with fashionable styling, high sensory quality, a driver-focused cockpit and engaging functionality. The promise of advanced driving pleasure implicit in the eye-catching exterior design will be delivered by a new, highly rigid platform, a powerful yet efficient turbocharged engine and front or allwheel drive powertrains. Toyota Australia’s Executive Director Sales and Marketing Tony Cramb said the C-HR represents the next step in the evolution of “SUV”. “C-HR is a car for people who want something special – those who desire the innovative dynamism and emotional appeal that a traditional SUV cannot offer,” he said.

Powering to victory Alex Scollard (#6) with his Western Sydney Wanderers Powerchair teammates last Saturday. Photo: Eric Berry NATHAN TAYLOR
he Western Sydney Wanderers captured their first Powerchair Premiership when they defeated five-time champions, Newcastle, last weekend in Mount Druitt. All level on 24 points apiece, Western Sydney and Newcastle clashed in the final round of the competition to determine the Football NSW Powerchair Premier League champion for 2016. With no Finals series, a draw was all the Wanderers needed to claim their maiden trophy as they were slightly ahead on goal differential.
T
In what can be described as an exhausting encounter, the Wanderers led 1-0 at half-time before holding out a determined Jets outfit in the second half to win 2-0. Speaking with the Weekender, Erskine Park resident and Wanderers utility player Alex Scollard said winning the Powerchair Premiership was a long time coming. “It was amazing to be crowned premiers, it’s taken us a long time,” he said. “I haven’t played a game of football with so much passion from myself and my teammates. “I’m proud to be a part of the club. I love the red and black.” The Wanderers Powerchair team comprises of six players which includes
two wingers, a mid-fielder, goalkeeper and two reserves. Scollard, who came off the interchange bench in the all-important decider, said he was desperate to make an impact on the game. “I just badly wanted to get my hands on that trophy,” the 20-year-old said. “I wanted to make myself proud, my club proud and my family proud.” Just like at every Wanderers home game, the club’s famous Red and Black Bloc (RBB) supporter base were out in force last Saturday at Kevin Betts Stadium. Scollard, who has been a member of the Wanderers for four seasons, said the support his side received from the
passionate crowd helped them get over the line. “Being a Wanderer is amazing – the RBB always come up and talk to us because they love that we play for the club that they support. They don’t care if we win, lose or draw,” he said. “The RBB really made a difference last weekend.” The Wanderers Powerchair team will now put their ‘premiers’ tag to the test when they battle against other clubs around the country for the A-League Club Championship in January. The club is also expected to honour their Powerchair heroes at an upcoming home game this A-League season.

GWS Giants knock on destiny’s door Packed Spotless Stadium to play host to AFL Preliminary Final this Saturday evening NATHAN TAYLOR
reater Western Sydney Giants coach Leon Cameron believes this Saturday night’s Preliminary Final against the Western Bulldogs could go right down to the wire. Spotless Stadium will be the stage for two of the AFL’s hottest young teams to battle for a place in the 2016 Grand Final, in front of an expected sell-out crowd. If the Giants advance to the decider, it will be a remarkable achievement for a club that just three years ago was sitting dead last in a world of trouble. If the Bulldogs manage to prevail, it too will be an incredible sporting story having not appeared in a Grand Final since way back in 1961. One thing is certain, history will be made come 8pm tomorrow night. “Everyone knows there’s no tomorrow on Saturday for one team,” Cameron said. “It’s a great story for the AFL that there’s going to be a new kid on the block come Saturday night, which is great for the competition. “It’s two exciting young sides that play a very aggressive, fast brand of footy. I think
G
GWS Giants co-captain Callan Ward training earlier this week the spectacle is going to be fantastic for football followers.” The Bulldogs advanced to the Preliminary Final following a 107-84 win over
Hawthorn. It was the second straight week the Footscray-based club had defeated a team which featured in last year’s Grand Final.
Cameron, who was at the MCG for last Friday’s Semi Final, was glowing in his praise for the Bulldogs. “They were outstanding… their form all year has been really good,” he said. “To knock off Hawthorn the way they did was simply awesome. “They’ve beaten the past two Grand Final sides from last year in the space of two weeks. “I think you’ll find the game will come down to the last five minutes. It’s going to be a huge challenge on Saturday for us.” The Bulldogs finished the regular season in seventh position and have been one of the surprise packets of the Finals so far. Former Western Bulldog turned Giant, Callan Ward, said he’s been impressed with what his old club have managed to do in 2016. “I personally love the way they play footy,” the 26-year-old said. “Their pressure is extremely high, they tackle hard and hit the ball hard too. “I think that suits us really well because we play a physical brand of football as well.” The GWS Giants take on the Western Bulldogs at 5.15pm this Saturday at Spotless Stadium, Sydney Olympic Park. The game is broadcast live on Fox Sports.

Paralympics Milne right on target as he secures Bronze medal in Rio NATHAN TAYLOR
ulgoa archer Jonathon Milne has become the second local athlete to medal at the Rio Paralympic Games. The 30-year-old paraplegic athlete picked up a well-deserved Bronze in the Men’s Individual Compound – Open event last Thursday morning in Rio. Milne’s Bronze coincides with Penrith rower Erik Horrie’s Silver medal that he won earlier in the competition. What made Milne’s medal even more incredible however, was the fact he was the first Australian archer to qualify for the Paralympics since Athens in 2004. It was also the first time an Australian had won a medal in archery since 1984. Speaking after his historic medal win against China’s Al Xinliang, Milne said all the hard work in the lead up to Rio well and truly paid off. “It’s been a lot of hard work but when it’s a passion and something you enjoy, you don’t mind shooting off a couple of hundred arrows a day, and giving up the hours to train,” he said. Conditions for the competition were quite a challenge according to Milne, with
M
the wind picking up significantly in the mid-afternoon when he defeated Turkey’s Bulent Korkmaz in the Quarter Finals. “It was an interesting experience,” he said. “I was hoping the wind would stick around because I seemed to be shooting better in the wind. But I held my nerve and executed a few good shots and that opened the door.” For the five ends (three arrows each), Milne shot three perfect 10s twice. His fourth match, the Semi Final, was his only loss on the day – going down to American and eventual Gold medallist Andre Shelby. Milne, who finished fourth in the compound bow open classification at the 2015 World Archer Para Championships, has experienced a whirlwind of a sporting career since taking up archery in 2014, after acquiring a spinal cord injury just two and half years earlier. Having dabbled in the target sport as a teenager, Milne rediscovered his love for archery while enjoying the challenge of mastering the art of his sport as a wheelchair user. In all Australia finished fifth on the Paralympics Medal Tally with 22 Gold, 30 Silver and 29 Bronze medals. China finished on top with 107 Gold medals.

Ropes Crossing boxer Valentine Borg (right) will fight in St Clair next month NATHAN TAYLOR
hampion Ropes Crossing boxer Valentine Borg will put it all on the line next month when he goes toe to toe with Indonesian Rusmin Kie Raha. The 23-year-old, who trains under legendary coach Mark Grech at Jabout in Penrith, will be the big drawcard at St Clair Leisure Centre on Saturday, October 8. Borg’s been training daily over the past 12 weeks to get in prime condition for the welterweight bout, but admitted to the Weekender that he’s finding it difficult to manage both work and training. “I’m an apprentice plumber, so I’m doing 10-12 hours a day at work before I head to the gym and pump out a two and half hour session,” he said. “My coach has me doing the hard yards and after every session I’m always wrecked. “Every day, as soon as I get home, I’m fast asleep.” Borg will fight Kie Raha over eight rounds, with the experienced Indonesian set to arrive in the country one week prior to the fight. Borg said while he’s never fought the 28-year-old before, he is aware of the raw

talent most Indonesian boxers possess. “I’ve fought an Indonesian champion before and that was a tough fight. He nearly knocked me out in the first round,” Borg recalled. “All Indonesians come to fight; they are all hard-headed and probably just fight to live back home. “Kie Raha has had double the fights I’ve had but I’m pretty confident in myself and my ability.” Borg debuted on the national boxing circuit in 2012 and only took up the sport after his father suggested it would be good for his fitness as an accomplished runner. After going through a tough time at school and growing up in an underprivileged area, Borg said boxing well and truly put him on the straight and narrow. “In high school I grew up in a rough area of Mount Druitt and I was always getting into fights,” he said. “Boxing ended up calming me down and putting me on the right path. “I fought for the wrong reasons but it all worked out for the best.” Catch Valentine Borg and a host of other local boxers when ‘Fight Night’ comes to St Clair Leisure Centre on Saturday, October 8 at 6pm. For tickets, call promoter Paul Nasari on 0413 812 274.

Small, who is highly respected at the club, was set to depart Howell Oval in the off-season but has been retained for one more year. “Steve’s plan was to do the three years on the basis that if you hear the same voice over and over it gets a bit tiring,” Goldsmith said. “We had hoped to get another person to step into his shoes but that wasn’t to be this year, so we spoke to Steve over the last few months and he’s agreed to join us again this year. “We’re really excited to have him back particularly with a couple of new faces that have joined us.” Giving Penrith’s first grade team a huge boost in the opening rounds of the
season is former Test cricketer and local junior Pat Cummins. The 23-year-old fast bowler was named in Penrith’s side for their Round 1 clash against Parramatta this weekend at Howell Oval. “We’re rapt because we rarely get to see Pat given his international and state commitments,” Goldsmith said. “Cricket NSW made the commitment to all grades that, for the first couple of rounds, they’ll make all their state players available ahead of the start of the Matador Cup. “I saw Pat a few weeks ago and he’s fit and firing, so hopefully we see a couple of quick spells from him.” Penrith will take on Parramatta in a One Day Match this Saturday morning at Howell Oval.

Around the grounds LEAGUE: St Marys are through to the Ron Massey Cup Grand Final after defeating the Western Suburbs Magpies 20-14 in last weekend’s Preliminary Final. St Marys will now battle Mounties for the premiership this Sunday, September 25 at Pirtek Stadium. LEAGUE: The Penrith Panthers will take on North Queensland this afternoon (Friday, September 23) at Allianz Stadium for a place in the Holden Cup Grand Final. Penrith, who enjoyed last weekend off, will go into today’s match as slight favourites over the Cowboys who will be determined to stop the Panthers from reaching their second straight premiership decider. If Penrith win, they’ll take on the winner out of Saturday’s match between the Sydney Roosters and St George Illawarra. GRIDIRON: The Nepean Ducks have won their first game of the season, defeating the UTS Gators 27-14 in Round 3 of the Gridiron NSW Division 1 competition. However, it wasn’t all good news for the Ducks with their Colts team losing their third round clash to the Gators 36-12. This Saturday afternoon both sides will take on Sutherland.
BASKETBALL: Former NBL star Bruce Bolden will hold his Elite Holiday Camp for representative level players this school holidays. Fully endorsed by the Penrith Basketball Association, the camp will be held this Wednesday, September 28 at the Penrith Basketball Stadium in Cambridge Park. To book or for more information, call 0435 820 000. FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers senior teams have finished the first ever season of the Wanderers Academy with three grand finals, one premiership and one championship. With all three senior teams making the Grand Final, they were played back-to-back at Leichhardt Oval with the U18s completing a premiership/ championship double as they defeated Sydney FC 2-1 in the decider. The Wanderers weren’t as lucky in their U20’s Grand Final, going down to Sydney FC 2-1. While in their NPL2 decider, Sydney FC were far too good for their Western Sydney rivals, prevailing 4-1. Up next for the Wanderers Academy will be the selection of the club’s National Youth League team.

head of this weekend’s opening round of the 2016/17 Sydney Grade Cricket competition, the Penrith Cricket Club have announced their captains for the upcoming season. Last Saturday night the club held their annual Season Launch where they revealed Ryan Smith as club captain and Matthew Halse as first grade captain for the 2016/17 season. Penrith Cricket Club President Paul Goldsmith said the pair were excellent leaders both on and off the field. “Ryan Smith is a long time first grader and he’s probably our hardest trainer. He’s extremely fit and a great role model for our young players,” he told the Weekender. “Matthew Halse will continue to be first grade captain this season, however he’s unavailable for the first three rounds because he is travelling. “In his absence, Tim Cummins will be the first grade captain in the interim.” Also returning to the club this season is head coach Steve Small, who will once again look after Penrith’s first grade side.
