Brett’s unexpected Father’s Day Born four months early, this little fighter was an early present for dad JADE ALIPRANDI

hile Father’s Day is important for most families, it will be particularly special for new dad Brett Hill who will spending it with his son at Nepean Hospital.

Mr Hill’s two-and-a-half-month-old son, Rohan, has spent the first months of his life in Nepean Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) after he and his twin sister were born prematurely at just 23 weeks and six days.

Sadly, the baby girl passed away after a brave 28 day fight.

“This is definitely an important Father’s Day for me,” Mr Hill told the Weekender.

“Being a father is the best thing in the world and I can’t wait to spend the day with Rohan.”

While Mr Hill has had to return to work after he ran out of holidays and sick leave, Rohan never leaves his mind.

“To be celebrating Father’s Day this year is just amazing and while it’s the first of many, it’s really nice to know that fatherhood is something that can never be taken away from me,” Mr Hill said.

Rohan is now in a stable condition and is being monitored closely by nurses and doctors to ensure he can hopefully leave the hospital by early October.

The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has found that former State Londonderry MP Bart Bassett “knowingly solicited a political donation from a property developer”.

However, it will not seek the advice of the DPP with respect to the possible prosecution of Mr Bassett for a criminal offence.

ICAC this week released its findings in relation to its investigation into political fundraising.

The Commission’s report has found that in 2010, for the purposes of his 2011 NSW State Election campaign, Mr Bassett solicited an $18,000 political donation from Buildev, a property developer.

Mr Bassett stood aside from the Liberal Party in 2014 and did not re-contest Londonderry last year.

Tuesday was the first day of Australian Parliament after the 2016 election, and the official start of a very different life for new Member for Lindsay, Emma Husar.

While it’s a new experience for Ms Husar and 39 other new MPs, her time working in Member for Chifley Ed Husic’s office as an adviser until the NSW Election last year has helped her ease into the role.

“I know some of the processes already and a lot of the people because I’ve worked with them,” she said.

“You can’t do a course in university about how to be an MP, so having that as a background was very handy.”

Ms Husar said she’s already been receiving a lot of correspondence from locals.

Council election is important Most people I speak to seem incredibly surprised that they need to vote in the local Council election next Saturday, September 10.

People are well and truly over politics and elections after a State Election last year, a longer than usual Federal Election campaign just a few months ago and of course the odd leadership challenge thrown in along the way.

But yes, next Saturday you do need to go to the polls again and yes, it’s important that you use your vote wisely.

(And yes, sausage sizzles will again be at the ready).

Council is probably the most complained about level of government out of the three, and yet it’s the one we all seem to pay the least attention to when elections come around.

In 2016 Councils are about much more than roads, rates and rubbish and in fact play a vital role in the way we get around the city in which we work, live and play.

Councils also have a seat at the table when it comes to vital infrastructure projects such as the new airport in western Sydney.

While local government still has its fair share of political agendas and egos, it is also the level of government where you’ll most find people dedicated to improving the local community.

Without singling out anybody for fear of being labelled unfair, the ballot paper next Saturday is full of names who have the Penrith community and its future well and truly at heart.

Politicians are often labelled as “out of touch”, greedy or in it for themselves, but truth be told, you’re not going to get rich

Failure looms for NRL’s 6pm game Long a gripe of many fans, Monday Night Football joined corner posts, punching and the North Sydney Bears in the giant rugby league graveyard this week.

A sensible decision, most would say, but the NRL’s move to open up a Friday 6pm timeslot for games next year just screams of stupidity.

The concept of a ‘pub game’ simply won’t work and while a big chunk of matches are likely to be in New Zealand, there is still sure to be some scheduling nightmares.

In the first part of the season, the game will actually air at 5pm in Queensland, rugby league’s second biggest state. That is just ridiculous.

I’ll give it a year before the NRL wakes up, listens to the fans and finds a new timeslot for the match.

Work begins on $49 million bridge

fter some menial preparation tasks, the ‘heavy lifting’ for the Nepean River Green Bridge has finally begun.

Seymour Whyte Constructions began to build the piling foundations on Monday for the bridge’s two permanent abutments that will be responsible for holding a whopping 600 tonnes of steel.

Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres turned the first sod for the project he committed to in 2010, that is expected to be open and ready for use by the middle of 2018.

“People will be able to walk over the bridge between Penrith and Emu Plains and actually be able to see the river for the first time in 150 years,” he said.

Mr Ayres said the abutments will be some of the largest on any pedestrian bridge in the country, and are designed to be able to be integrated into future development on the Penrith side of the river.

The $49 million project is costing double what was originally allocated by the NSW Government for the bridge, and Mr Ayres said the extra $25 million will be spread out over two Budgets.

“This bridge is being built for the price it costs to build it,” he said.

home in South Penrith was completely destroyed last week after a devastating fire.

The Bickley Road property, believed to be home to a family of four, went up in flames just after 1pm last Thursday.

While a man in his 30s, believed to be the son in the household, and a woman believed to be his girlfriend, were evacuated safely, the household dog sadly didn’t make it out alive, according to witnesses.

emergency services after he saw plumes of smoke coming from the garage.

“I saw a man and a woman inside the house and I went to smash one of the windows to get them out,” he told the Weekender.

“I couldn’t lift the pot plant by myself to smash it but a guy came up and helped me lift it and we smashed it together.”

At least eight fire crews attended the scene, as well as three ambulances and several police officers.

The man and woman were treated for smoke inhalation and shock. The cause of the fire is yet to be established but police aren’t treating it as suspicious.

hole industries are going to be wiped out in the wake of the State Government’s decision to ban greyhound racing, according to pet food suppliers Brett and Yvonne Chambers – starting with theirs.

Mr and Mrs Chambers own and run Farra Pet Foods in Peachtree Road, Penrith, a 40-year-old business that sells 80 per cent of its processed meat to the greyhound industry.

Mr Chambers said Farra bought over 300 tonnes of non-human consumption beef and 20 tonnes of non-human consumption kangaroo meat from suppliers last year alone.

“80 per cent of it goes to greyhounds... we can’t pay our bills off 20 per cent, and will have to close,” he said.

They believe Farra will be one of many pet food processing businesses that will be forced to shut their doors, leaving little to no use for a large portion of meat already unfit for human consumption.

This meat comes from the dairy and beef industries, from cows that have died of natural causes or sickness, and through the legal culling of kangaroos.

If the abattoirs close, Mrs Chambers questioned how animals who have died of sickness will be tested after death, and how disease outbreak within the dairy and beef industries will be managed.

“Abattoirs test for a cause of death and play a huge role in containing disease outbreak among cattle in the farming industry,” she said.

“Where will the wastage from the dairy and beef industries go? It’s against the law to burn dead animals or bury them in areas where they can enter the water system, so what’s it going to cost a farmer to remove a dead cow?”

Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon was in Penrith last week when the Greens launched their national campaign to end greyhound racing across Australia.

“We are in talks with the government about how those issues are managed, but we also need to recognise that the industry has been dying,” she said.

“Prior to there being any inquiry, any exposure on the ABC, more than 20 race tracks were already earmarked for closure, the industry has lost its support base.”

Legislation passed the NSW Parliament last week that will see the green light go on at race tracks for the final time on June 30 next year.

otary Clubs from across Australia were in for a treat this week when the new President Elect of Rotary International, Ian Riseley, paid them a visit in Penrith.

Rotary members from across the country flocked to Penrith Panthers to hear Mr Riseley speak at a number of seminars.

When Mr Riseley takes over the presidency next July, he will become the fifth Australian in 110 years to do so, something he says is a huge privilege.

“You could say it’s a big deal – it’s certainly a massive honour,” he told the Weekender.

“I’m optimistic that I’ll come up with interesting ideas to make Rotary an even better organisation than it is now.”

Mr Riseley was last in Penrith in 2000 for the Olympics, and said he is looking forward to meeting with everyone over the few days he is here.

“It’s a real pleasure to be here and I can’t wait to get talking to people and meet everyone who puts in such a great effort for Rotary,” he said.

When asked what the best part of being involved in Rotary is, Mr Riseley said it’s all to do with his 1.2 million international colleagues.

woman was discharged from hospital earlier this week after a horror car accident involving a semi trailer in Cranebrook.

The woman, aged in her 40s, was a rear passenger in a car travelling along The Northern Road, Cranebrook, when a semi trailer rear-ended the vehicle just after 8.15am last Thursday, August 25, near Fifth Avenue.

CareFlight’s rapid response rescue helicopter was called and landed in the area at about 8.30am.

The woman suffered head injuries and was treated at the scene by CareFlight’s specialist doctor and intensive care paramedics. She was placed into an induced coma with sedation, and was placed on a ventilator to help stabilise her injuries.

The crews transferred the injured woman to the helicopter and she was flown to Westmead Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

She didn’t require surgery and was discharged from Westmead Hospital on Monday, August 29.

The road was closed for much of the day last Thursday and investigations into the crash are ongoing.

n a major reform for the health system, General Practitioners (GPs) in the Nepean Blue Mountains Primary Health Network (NBMPHN) region have been selected to participate in a national government trial that aims to improve the treatment of people with chronic diseases.

NBMPHN is one of 10 Primary Health Networks across Australia, and one of three in NSW, chosen to establish Health Care Homes in General Practice.

A Health Care Home is a General Practice chosen by a patient to be their medical ‘home-base’, with the practice responsible for their ongoing, comprehensive, and holistic medical care.

The General Practice will work in partnership with the patient and other health professionals to tailor their care to address the individual’s specific conditions and coordinate the range of services that they require.

Not happy with changes

I would like to know who the brains-trust at NSW Transport was who decided – without any consultation with Penrith Council – that a passenger set-down area on the south side of Penrith Station was no longer required. The Mayor Karen McKeown is quite right in slamming NSW Transport for this decision (Weekender, August 26). I understand that a permanent set-down area has been or will be set aside on the northern side of the station which means that anyone from the south side of Penrith who wants to legally setdown passengers at the station must now go all the way around through Thornton to do so. My bet is that most people will not do this and will opt to run the gauntlet of the parking rangers and set-down in the taxi area. Not happy, Jan. KEITH EVERETT, WERRINGTON COUNTY

The social engineers will think of another name two years from now to pursue their agenda which in my opinion is regressive for our Australian society. Are these same-sex couples so unsure about the stability of their relationship that they need a formal document to put their minds at rest?

Troy goes on to say “legalising same-sex marriage will simply be rubber stamping what we all know makes sense”. The “we all” amounts to the two per cent of the population who know what’s best for us all.

Important job doesn’t help man escape heavy penalty

A highly-regarded Nepean Hospital anaesthetist has failed to retain his licence despite his important line of work.

Ian Mark Seppelt fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with driving while disqualified and speeding.

The court heard the intensive care specialist chose to “run the gauntlet” and drive his daughter to school to avoid her missing a leadership camp, but was busted speeding in the process.

Magistrate Carl Milovanovich told the Wallacia resident he had placed an “enormous burden” on his lawyer to try and “justify the unjustifiable”.

He acknowledged his life-saving research, but said he was not being judged on his profession, but rather his “appalling” traffic history and the fact that he “wilfully disobeyed” his suspension.

“The road rules apply equally,” Magistrate Milovanovich said.

“We have to be consistent.”

He was convicted, fined $1,300 and disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Father thought daughter was in trouble when he assaulted man

A protective father who assaulted his daughter’s partner thinking she was in danger has been slapped with two good behaviour bonds.

Craig Paul Lodding fronted Penrith Local Court last Friday charged with ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’ and ‘enter a building with intent to commit an indictable offence’.

The court heard after trying and failing to contact his daughter, he became worried and “barged into the house”, grabbing his son-in-law.

Magistrate Carl Milovanovich said he could understand his concern but that he took the wrong approach.

“Unfortunately you allowed your judgement to falter on this occasion,” he said, acknowledging the accused was an otherwise hardworking and decent member of

the community. He was ordered to enter into multiple two-year good behaviour bonds.

Magistrate sees funny side of prisoner’s naughty words

A prisoner’s parting words have caused giggles in court after he let the F-bomb slip.

Joshua Azzopardi appeared before Penrith Local Court via audio visual link from custody last Friday, charged with ‘escape police custody’, ‘assault and resist police’ and ‘damage property’.

After conferring with the bar table, Magistrate Roger Clisdell advised Mr Azzopardi he would re-appear on October 6 to confirm his not guilty pleas.

“No f***king worries, mate,” he replied before exiting the booth.

“I got two thumbs up,” Magistrate Clisdell chuckled.

“What did Basil from ‘Fawlty Towers’ say? A satisfied customer, we should have him stuffed.”

Former homeless man had knife for protection

Sleeping rough is no excuse to carry a knife, a former homeless man has found out the hard way.

Ricky Allan McMahon fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with having custody of a knife in a public place.

When asked why he had the instrument in his possession, the defendant told the court it was “beneficial to have protection” when you’re sleeping on the streets.

But Magistrate Carl Milovanovich shot down that defence, saying a knife for personal protection was specifically outlawed as people were more likely to get injured if an altercation occurred.

“You hear on the news every night about a stabbing,” he said.

“The silver lining is that I never once used it,” Mr McMahon responded.

He was convicted, and ordered to enter a 12-month good behaviour bond.

Crime spree leads to year-long prison sentence

Mathew Jones will spend the next 12 months behind bars and miss the birth of his child after being sentenced for a spate of offences.

Wearing prison greens and blowing kisses to his heavily pregnant partner, Mr Jones appeared before Penrith Local Court via video audio link from Parklea last Thursday to face the music for his 10day August crime spree.

The 27-year-old faced court charged with having custody of a 9cm-blade butterfly knife, two counts of ‘driving while disqualified’, ‘police pursuit’ and ‘failing to wear a seat belt’.

A suitably unimpressed Magistrate Carl Milovanovich described the repeat offender’s driving while disqualified record as “appalling” and said only full time custody would suffice.

“You’ve got to realise this hasn’t happened overnight,” he said, noting the former bricklayer’s labourer was first prosecuted back in 2009.

“You have total disregard for your obligations to the court and yourself and the community.”

Magistrate Milovanovich refused a request to implement a parole period, saying the accused had been given that luxury in the past and had re-offended.

He is eligible for release on August 13, 2017.

Man grateful for being caught

A former drug taker who relapsed has expressed his gratitude at being caught.

Riazal Ali appeared before Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with ‘possess prohibited drug’.

His lawyer claimed Mr Ali had been “abstinence” up until the latest offence but had turned to drugs again after losing his job and encountering child custody issues.

“He is glad police were able to stop him before he went down the path he’s previously walked,” his solicitor said.

Magistrate Carl Milovanovich accepted it was only a small quantity of meth amphetamine for personal use, but warned him to keep his nose clean.

“Look, I’ve had a look at your criminal record,” he said.

“You need to be careful...that you don’t allow drugs to moderate your behaviour.”

He was convicted, fined $300 and the drugs were ordered to be destroyed.

Man failed to complete any of his community service hours

The race is on for Daniel Hopperton to complete his community service work after failing to meet his obligations.

Mr Hopperton fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday having failed to perform any of his 50-hours of courtimposed community service.

Magistrate Carl Milovanovich gave him two months to complete the unpaid task or face revocation and a stiffer penalty. “[Community service is] a direct alternative to full-time custody,” Magistrate Carl Milovanovich reminded him before warning him against another false start.

He is due back in court on October 27.

Marriage breakdown leads man to drunken night

A heavily intoxicated driver caught “swerving all over the road” has been stripped of his licence for nine months.

Stephen Bruce Cole fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with high-range drink driving.

The court heard the former maintenance worker broke his longstanding sobriety following the collapse of his second marriage and blew more than five times the legal limit when intercepted.

Magistrate Carl Milovanovich said it was “good fortune rather than good management” that no one was killed.

“It’s a shame to see a man of your age with no criminal record before the court,” he said.

He was also ordered to fit an interlock device to his car.

St Marys: Man robbed in broad daylight in local car park

Police are interested in speaking with two men who may be able to assist with their inquiries after a man was robbed on the weekend.

At about 9.30am on Saturday, August 27, a 25-year-old man was returning to his vehicle parked on East Lane, St Marys, when he was approached by two men.

The alleged offenders threatened the man and demanded money from him.

The victim complied.

The offenders fled the scene towards Broke Lane.

Officers from St Marys Local Area Command were notified of the incident and commenced investigations.

The two men are described as being of Pacific Islander in appearance and were wearing dark clothing during the time of the attack.

St Clair: Woman’s car stolen at knifepoint from her driveway

An anonymous tip-off to Crime Stoppers has led to the recovery of a car stolen at knifepoint from St Clair last week.

A 40-year-old woman had her maroon Camry stolen by a man armed with a knife as she returned to her home in Morningbird Close, St Clair, at about 8.40pm on Thursday, August 25.

Following an appeal to the public for assistance, an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers was received about 6.30pm on Friday, August 26.

Police from Penrith Local Area Command and St Marys detectives attended Pyramid Street, Emu Plains, where the stolen car was found on the street.

It was seized for forensic examination.

Police have thanked the public and the media for their assistance.

Jamisontown: Pair to appear in court on multiple charges

A man and woman were each charged with a range of offences after they were randomly stopped by police this week.

At about 2.25am on Tuesday, August 30, police had cause to stop the pair as they were driving down Batt Street, Jamisontown.

Police spoke to both people.

It was established that the female, who was driving at the time, held a suspended driver’s licence.

After a search of the pair and their vehicle, they were both subsequently arrested and charged.

The 29-year-old Springwood woman was granted conditional bail and was charged with ‘possess prohibited drug’, ‘possess goods in custody suspected of being stolen’, and ‘drive motor vehicle while suspended’.

The 31-year-old Penrith man was refused bail and was charged with ‘supply prohibited drug’, ‘possess prohibited drug’, and ‘resist officer in execution of duty’.

The woman is due in Penrith Local Court on September 20, and the man was due to appear on Tuesday, August 30.

Jamisontown: Two men robbed by gang of seven

Two men were allegedly robbed on Saturday night in a scary incident in Jamisontown.

At about 3.20am on Saturday, August 27, the two men, aged 22 and 19, were walking along Mulgoa Road near Preston Street.

The duo entered Preston Street when they were approached by a group of seven men.

The group allegedly grabbed the 22-year-old and repeatedly assaulted him before he fell to the ground.

They demanded he hand over his phone to which he complied.

They then turned to the 19-year-old and demanded his phone, which they were given, before they fled the scene, running out onto Mulgoa Road.

Police were called when the victims made their way to a nearby residence for help.

The tricky world of superannuation We often say to our clients that when getting advice about things like estate planning the advice should be threefold – that is they should see their lawyer, accountant and financial planner.

One of the most commonly misunderstood assets a person has is superannuation.

Superannuation is essentially money held by someone else on trust for you.

This means that you do not have direct control over your superannuation and cannot access it at a whim.

It is designed to provide you with money to live off in your retirement.

There are three main trigger points that will enable access to superannuation: 1. Retirement (note there are specific age requirements in this regard); 2. Total or permanent disability including terminal diseases in some cases; 3. Death.

In relation to the third point it is important to remember that your Will does not dictate what happens to any superannuation you have when you die.

This must be controlled outside your Will by making a “nomination” directly with your superannuation fund.

Your lawyer or financial planner should be able to assist you with this.

Your superannuation is typically made up of two components, being the money you and your employer have contributed and accrued over your working life, and any insurance component that might be included in your fund.

Council Election

Changing face of North Ward offers • All five current North Ward Councillors will contest election • Changing dynamics creates uncertainty However, Deputy Mayor Ross Fowler got both his second and third candidate up in the 2012 election, and is fairly confident he will get his number two, Glen Gardiner, up this time.

“I am hopeful I will get my number two elected,” he said.

Cr Fowler has been a long-term Councillor, and recognised the importance of North Ward as a residential area as Penrith continues to grow.

“Not withstanding this, there is still important agricultural industries in North Ward. There’s horse studs along Castlereagh Road, market gardens in Berkshire Park and what will be in the future a very important location with the Penrith Lakes.”

It’s been a battle for Councillors affiliated with major parties to come to agreements with controversial Cr Cornish, who turned his back on the Liberal Party to run as a conservative independent.

Cr Cornish suggested there could have been a Labor-Liberal cross preference deal, which both parties flatly denied.

“Labor is preferencing the Greens (and vice versa across all wards), Crameri is preferencing Cornish (and vice versa) and the Liberals are standing on their own. I’m not getting preferences nor am I giving them,” Cr Fowler said.

hree of Council’s most experienced campaigners in the shape of John Thain, Kevin Crameri and Ross Fowler are again contesting North Ward at next week’s Council Election.

North Ward has seen a huge increase in its population with the recent development of the new Jordan Springs housing estate in its south-east, and before that, canal-living in Waterside.

In the north, residents and business in the semi-rural Londonderry will be affected by the NSW Government’s ban on greyhound racing, and in the south there’s new a new type of residents in the contemporary Thornton estate.

Council has recently had a strong focus on activating the CBD’s night time economy, and has approved a record amount of development applications.

For the last four years, North Ward has been represented by one Labor Councillor, John Thain; one Liberal, Ross Fowler; one Greens, Michelle Tormey; and two independents, Kevin Crameri and Marcus Cornish.

Each current Councillor is recontesting to secure one of the five spots, and if they all receive enough votes to get back in, no one will get their second candidate on Council.

Library system Penrith City Library has officially launched its new web-based catalogue, creating an easier and more accessible experience for library users.

Library patrons now have a wider search function to find eBooks and eMagazines, local digital collections and local historic photographs.

Since 1993, Penrith Library has operated its own designed system, which was the first fully integrated, library self-checkout facility in Australia.

With rapid advancements in library collections and access technologies, it was time to move to a system that searches over a greater range of its contemporary services.

The new system can be accessed at library.penrith.city.

It officially launched on Monday.

St Marys Village has helped to collect over 12,000 shoe donations, alongside 13 Mirvac Retail Centres across Australia, with new community charity initiative Share My Shoes.

The funds raised from sale of these shoes through The Smith Family stores nationwide will go towards The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program – providing educational support to disadvantaged young Australians.

North Ward has key arterial roads such as The Northern Road that has recently been widened and Castlereagh Road that are both in gridlock during peak hours.

Widening Dunheved Road has been flagged as absolutely critical for a new Council, in addition to Werrington Road to the Great Western Highway.

Long-term Penrith Councillor, Cr Crameri, who has been a loud voice for the semi-rural areas for 28 years, said roads are a critical issue.

“We have to keep on top of our roads, they are deteriorating badly, like Dunheved and Andrews Roads,” he said.

“Plus, car parking and traffic flow are huge issues, it can take you 15 minutes to go down High Street.”

Cr Thain, Cr Fowler and Cr Crameri would be confident of retaining their spots

on Council, but the other two positions will be hotly contested.

North Ward residents can vote before the September 10 election at the St Marys Memorial Hall, on the corner of Great Western Highway and Mamre Road, St Marys, or 205 to 209 High Street, Penrith in the old Blockbuster Video site.

Council Election

35 candidates face • Airport remains a key issue for South Ward locals DALE DRINKWATER

he new airport at Badgerys Creek remains a hot topic in South Ward heading into the Council Election next weekend.

Council has kept the airport at the front of mind when dealing with both State and Federal Governments, and has been heavily advocating for a rail link from the airport through Luddenham, Orchard Hills to St Marys and further north.

With that, Councillors have a huge challenge ahead to ensure the best outcomes for the people of South Ward, many who bought into the area for a quiet, rural and semi-rural lifestyle.

South Ward Councillors are required to balance this focus with the needs of the Penrith CBD, industrial area of Jamisontown, and the needs of families in the residential areas of South Penrith and the enormous Glenmore Park.

Since 2012, South Ward has been in the hands of one Labor Councillor and current Mayor, Karen McKeown; three Liberals in the shape of Mark Davies, Bernard Bratusa and Ben Goldfinch; and Independent, Jim Aitken.

to spend more time with his family, leaving Cr Davies to be the key Liberal Party candidate for South Ward.

Cr Davies and his young number two, Joshua Hoole, are standing on their own, with no preferences to or from any other candidates in South Ward.

“It’s a pretty big field of candidates, so who knows. But at the end of the day obviously it would be great to get Josh over the line to bring in some young blood to Council,” he said.

Cr Bratusa has left to run in East Ward, leaving room for East Ward Councillor Maurice Girotto to run in South Ward for the Christian Democratic Party.

Although South Ward now has 35 candidates across seven tickets all chasing one of the five spots on Council, Cr Girotto is not regretting his decision.

“When we looked at it, running in East Ward was going to be a difficult task,” he said.

“But half an hour before closing time Jackie Greenow pulled out [of East ward].

If I knew that I would have stayed in East Ward, because on your own it’s a hard task.”

However, he said the Christian Democratic Party has a better chance in South Ward because there is a “generic core vote

Cr Aitken, who has been on Council for two decades, said Council is going to need to focus on producing a premier airport for South Ward.

“One that’s not 24 hours, one that’s not going to cause health problems. It’s a matter of us doing it right,” he said.

“We must take advantage of the opportunities – the best job opportunities, the best places where people want to raise families, the best hospitals and the best education.”

Cr McKeown said while South Ward has so many different areas, she has great confidence that people will see good, experienced Councillors running again.

“South Ward includes the city centre, it has the hospital, the residential areas and the rural areas, it’s a very diverse ward. It’s hard to predict but the voters very rarely get it wrong,” she said.

Confidence runs high among veteran • Jackie Greenow calls it quits after more than two decades on Council • Bratusa switches to East Ward DALE DRINKWATER

here’s still some familiar faces contesting East Ward at next week’s Council Election despite the departure of a veteran independent Councillor.

East Ward covers key western Sydney suburbs such as St Marys, that has seen a huge increase in home values since the announcement of the Western Sydney Airport.

In June, the Weekender reported that Raine and Horne St Marys recorded immediate increases between five and 10 per cent on housing, apartments and vacant land in the wake of the airport announcement.

St Marys has the Spring Festival that was cancelled this year due to setbacks in the streetscape works, but the CBD is expected to be revitalised with people, after its first high rise apartment building began construction in May this year.

East Ward also covers one of the most important features of the Penrith LGA, the Health and Education Precinct across the Western Sydney University site in Kingswood and Nepean TAFE. For the last four years, East Ward has been represented by two Labor Council-

lors, Prue Car and Greg Davies, Liberal Tricia Hitchen and independents Maurice Girotto and Jackie Greenow.

In the 2016 Penrith Council Election, it has the smallest number of candidates running for one of the five spots, with just 15 candidates on three tickets – five Greens, five Labor and five Liberal.

Councillor Maurice Girotto has moved to instead run in South Ward for the Christian Democratic Party, and East Ward is also losing two of its female Councillors, including 21-year veteran Jackie Greenow.

“A question was asked of me, ‘do I still want to be doing it in four years time’, and it’s a commitment I’m not willing to make,” Cr Greenow told the Weekender.

“Now I will be able to spend more time with my three grandchildren who have never known me as anything other than a Councillor.”

Cr Greenow said she wanted to clarify that she isn’t leaving East Ward, she’s just not running in the next election.

The second is Cr Car, who won the seat of Londonderry for the Labor Party at the 2015 State Election.

Greg Davies is still running for the Labor Party though, with another former State Election candidate, Todd Carney, running second on his ticket.

candidates in battle for East Ward Cr Davies said he believes they are both a really good chance at securing a seat on Council, and could possibly even get their third candidate, Ben Price, across the line to represent the area that has a very broad demographic.

“We do have a large proportion of older established areas, that have been around for as long as most people can remember,” Cr Davies said.

“They were around long before we had Section 94 developer contributions, so there’s still work to do to bring the amenities up to scratch.”

Caddens is fairly new, but he said in older areas like St Marys and North St Marys, there needs to be usable green space for families to enjoy the outdoors together.

With the loss of two Councillors, the Liberal Party can be excused for running both current Councillors Tricia Hitchen and Bernard Bratusa on the same ticket.

Cr Bratusa is leaving his spot in South Ward to take a shot at East Ward, where he ran unsuccessfully against Prue Car for the seat of Londonderry at the 2015 State Election.

“I met a lot of good people door knocking in Londonderry so I think there’s a lot of opportunities in that ward,” Cr Bratusa said.

“And they’ve lost a lot of experience losing [the three Councillors] so there’s a need for experienced Councillors in East Ward.”

In terms of where your vote will go, Labor is preferencing the Greens in East Ward and vice versa, leaving no preference deal to be made for the Liberal Party.

East Ward residents can vote before September 10 at St Marys Memorial Hall, on the corner of Great Western Highway and Mamre Road, St Marys, or 205 to 209 High Street, Penrith.

Panthers throws its support behind community heroes

Greens hope to double numbers on Council at election next week DALE DRINKWATER

he Red Cow was turned green last week for the launch of the Greens’ campaign ahead of Penrith Council elections next weekend.

Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon introduced candidates Michelle Tormey for North Ward, Gavin Smith for East Ward and Patrick Darley-Jones for South Ward as the party’s lead candidates.

“We will run a very strong campaign, I understand we are in with a very good chance in two wards but we don’t take anything for granted,” she said.

“We are a small party, we’re not cashed-up like Labor and Liberal, but our strength is people.”

Cr Tormey has been the only Greens Councillor since 2012. She is concerned the ward will be represented by only males if she is not re-elected.

“I will bring female representation, we are losing two female Councillors, and in North Ward I am the only female that is in an electable position,” she said.

“Women make up half of the population of Penrith and we can sometimes bring a different perspective.”

She said she has learnt a lot in the last four years, and has toughened-up to the challenging world of politics.

Last Thursday morning representatives from 12 charities were in attendance at the club to receive a portion of the important funding.

The charities included Autism Spectrum, Cerebral Palsy Alliance, Christ Mission Possible, Community Junction, Delta Therapy Dogs, Gifts of Grace, NADO, Panthers on the Prowl, Penrith City Coun-

“We’re incredibly proud and privileged that Panthers can help, change and influence the lives of a number of people in our community by this very important ClubGrants process,” Penrith Panthers General Manager, Jason Stone said.

Delta Therapy Dogs, who bring the joy of animal companionship to a range of facilities, received $5000 in funding.

“The funding will help with the insurance, logistics as well as training the dogs,” Animal Handler, Heather Hanly said.

Council News Mondo opening Thousands of people walk through The Mondo each week due to its prominent location between Westfield Penrith, Penrith Library and the Council Chambers, and the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre. It’s a part of our city that is well used and I know it has been missed during its redevelopment.

People would often walk past and through the area.

What we wanted to do was create a space they can go to meet friends, enjoy the sun, to rest and relax.

It’s part of Council’s vision to make our City Centres more vibrant, lively and attractive for investment while offering spaces for people to stop and enjoy being outside.

The new Mondo is more inviting, contemporary and cosmopolitan. It’s already been embraced by workers, shoppers and visitors to our City Centre. The installation of a range of custom designed seating will allow for people who want to sit alone or meet in small groups and umbrellas as well as more trees provide shade

Lead candidate for South Ward Patrick Darley-Jones lives in Luddenham, and as an industrial engineer is keen to bring sustainable jobs to the Penrith area.

“Real, local full-time jobs means job security for families, ensuring their mortgages are covered along with their home budget and their children’s school uniforms,” he said.

“Jobs add value to the region and contribute to the nation.”

Locals go to the polls next Saturday, September 10.

y plucking the colours of Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School’s surrounds, Balibased contemporary muralist Brad Eastman, aka Beastman, has created a building-sized masterpiece.

Using a palette of blues, greens, browns and vibrant yellows, students now and into the future can marvel at the internationally renowned artist’s work on the grounds of their own school.

It took ‘Beastman’ over 60 hours to complete the mural, while hundreds of pairs of beady eyes watched him.

“The scale of it instantly draws people in, especially the kids,” he said.

“They just want to know how the hell I’m doing it, so they just stare at me for ages while they’re trying to work it out.”

He said having students watch him was a great way for them to realise the hard work and patience that goes into creating the scale and quality of his artworks.

“Not many people can witness for a long period of time a large mural being painted, usually they see a finished product, but don’t see the whole process,” he said.

‘Beastman’ used aerosol paint for the work to show students the benefits of working with the medium, and create a positive image for it within the school.

“I like doing the aerosol murals at schools because there’s a lot of stigma associated with spray paint,” he said.

ometimes business owners aren’t as happy running their business as they thought they would be.

Most seem to understand that building a business will take hard work, a large volume of work and a certain amount of stress. But if you are rarely happy in relation to working in your business, perhaps it is time to ask some questions.

Some people start businesses that they think will make them a lot of money but they have no passion for the concept or work involved. If this is you, you are unlikely to succeed and you are even more unlikely to ever be happy. Even if you do succeed, you will have tied yourself to a business that you hate.

Be sure to go in to business with both a great idea AND a passion for what you do.

As stated above, most of us know that successful businesses are hard work, and are not built overnight. You need patience and perseverance. But how much harder is it to exercise those traits if you are unhappy with your day-to-day work?

This is not to say that at times there will be tasks you need to learn that you don’t enjoy, or that you don’t pitch in when there are ‘boring’ jobs to complete. But if those times turn into weeks, months and years, no amount of patience and perseverance is going to result in happiness.

It is also important to think about your motivations. If you are working solely to attain material things, you will soon learn that money doesn’t buy happiness. If your goals are entirely about earning a certain figure, you will find yourself unhappy in the leaner times.

Whereas if your purpose for running your business are for other benefits, your happiness is not necessarily tied to your financial success. In any case, wealth should be an outcome of your business, not a strategy. Having “get rich quick” as your goal is not only unrealistic, it is also a sure fire way to be UNhappy in business. Align your goals to non-financial values and you are far more likely to have a successful business and the happiness you also no doubt want along the way.

ith the dust still settling over the Census, we still need to wait until next year for the demographic data to be updated on the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ website. So where can we find up-to-date data to help us plan for the next two-three years of business activity?

There are several sources of recent information that we can use in order to plan our estimates. The first source is your local council. Most councils will have an economic development officer – someone who is responsible for fostering business activity in the council’s area. They can provide you with local demographic data to estimate the size of your market. This will enable you to estimate sales. They also have business development programs so it doesn’t hurt to touch base with your local council to see if you can benefit from them.

The next source of data is an industry association. Industry associations gather information from their members and are a great source of benchmarking for budgets. They can tell you information about typical profit statement items and

business ratios to help you develop your financial projections. They too may have industry-based development programs to enhance your turnover, or network events to connect with similar businesses in different regions.

While we’re talking about benchmarks, the Australian Tax Office’s website has a benchmark section which has figures for typical business types, such as florists, plumbers and accountants.

These business types also have different figures based on the amount of annual turnover to help you plan with a greater degree of accuracy.

When working these figures into your budget, ensure that you adjust them for inflation projections to give you a realistic estimate.

I

t’s not often Penrith fans can feel this comfortable.

Going into Sunday night’s game against Manly at Pepper Stadium, the result matters little when it comes to the competition ladder – whatever happens, the Panthers will be facing an elimination final next weekend.

But momentum is critical at this time of year and having won their past four matches, the Panthers would want nothing more than to go into the Finals with another victory under their belt.

The side provided fans with another heart-stopper last weekend, getting home 15-14 over the Gold Coast on the back of a Matt Moylan field goal late in the game.

Penrith dominated the Titans in the first half and set up a commanding 14-0 lead but as has happened so much this season,

handling and completion rates let the side down for a big chunk of the contest and allowed the Titans back into the game.

Like most of the year, however, the Panthers refused to panic and despite being away from home with a big crowd against them, managed to keep their composure and grab the two points.

Nobody could blame Manly for having one eye on Mad Monday heading into this Sunday night’s game.

It’s been a rough introduction to the club for new coach Trent Barrett, who went from the relaxation of ‘gardening leave’ at Penrith to the fire of Manly, a club going through a significant generational shift with household names like Jamie Lyon and Brett Stewart at the tail end of their careers and the next generation – highlighted by Tom and Jake Trbojevic – starting to find their feet.

The game plan for Penrith this weekend is relatively simple – hold the ball and you win the game. There’s enough points in Penrith, especially against a team like

Manly, to put the flair and offloads in the back pocket and just get back to good old fashioned hard work through the middle of the park.

I’d expect a slightly different interchange rotation from coach Griffin this week, especially if the Panthers get out to a handy lead. Don’t be surprised if Matt Moylan earns a break on the sideline with Zak Hardaker to get a decent stint at fullback.

Griffin is also dealing with the loss of Reagan Campbell-Gillard for the remainder of the season, with Jeremy Latimore named to replace him this weekend.

Griffin has done a remarkable job to get Penrith this far, especially considering the mid-season overhaul he undertook, and to be able to go into the final game of the season with the Finals already secured is quite simply footy heaven. He’ll be able to test a few things before next weekend’s do-or-die game, and get a feel for what he needs to work on during the week.

to let this game slip, and there’s no solid reason to suggest the winning streak will come to an end this weekend. I’m expecting the Panthers to come out of the blocks hard, put Manly away and then ease off in the second half as the reality of Finals football starts to set in.

This game deserves a big home crowd, even if it’s to acknowledge the mighty effort of making the Finals this season.

The 23-year-old suffered a serious back injury after a tough hit from James, who escaped any charge from the NRL’s Match Review Committee. Griffin told Sky Sports Radio on Tuesday morning that he was now “over” the incident after initially blowing up post-game on Saturday, but said he would address the issue of the ‘prowler tackle’ with the NRL in the off-season. CampbellGillard was forced to stay in hospital on the Gold Coast following Saturday night’s game, and faces a three month recovery.

Penrith may yet have to travel to Queensland with a match against Brisbane or North Queensland both also possible. There’s also an outside chance Penrith could finish fifth, and take on the eighth placed Titans or Tigers.

olden V8 Supercar driver and self-confessed diehard Penrith Panthers fan James Courtney said he was “blown away” by the club’s $22 million Rugby League Academy.

In town for last weekend’s Sydney Super Sprint event at Eastern Creek, Courtney received a personal guided tour of the Academy from none other than 1991 Panthers Grand Final hero Royce Simmons.

Speaking with Extra Time, who joined Courtney on the exclusive tour, the 36-year-old Holden Racing Team driver said he was amazed at everything the Academy had to offer.

“I suppose it’s like mad race fans coming down to see the pits – I was blown away,” Courtney said.

“I particularly liked the gym, including the motivational posters on each wall plus the theatre where the players and coaches watch post and pre-game stuff, that was excellent.

“The best part, however, was the locker room which had each player’s name on their own locker door. You can really picture them in there getting ready for a game.”

Born at Nepean Hospital in 1980, Courtney has been a fanatical Panthers fan since birth, so much so that he often gets in trouble from team bosses for watching Penrith games during important race meetings.

“I’m always watching it,” he admitted to Extra Time.

TIGHTEST COMP IN YEARS It is hard to believe that this weekend sees the end of the regular NRL season, meaning an early Mad Monday for some teams and for others, the start of what will surely be one of the best Finals series we have seen for quite some time.

Most experts of the game are of the belief that at this incredibly late part of the season, it is wide open and the Grand Final make-up is pretty hard to predict.

For all the Panthers supporters out there, what is cause for a tiny celebration is that on the back of the gutsy win against the Titans last weekend, their place in the final eight is assured, irrespective of the result this Sunday night against the Manly Sea Eagles at Pepper Stadium.

This will certainly not be the week for the Panthers to take the foot off the pedal however, as a good win on Sunday will set them up for a far more confident appearance for the first semi the following week.

Trent Barrett returns to Penrith for

the first time as an opposing coach and, despite the fact that a final eight spot is now out of reach, Barrett will be hoping for a win on his old coaching turf and to give a winning send off to a great former teammate of mine, Jamie Lyon.

Penrith will be hoping to spoil Lyon’s party however, and once again I am expecting another strong performance from Matt Moylan and his troops.

Nathan Cleary continues to go from strength to strength each week and I am sure he will be wanting to take his good form into his very first Finals series.

Pretty good for a young man who this time last year was finishing his HSC and opting to play for his country rather than in Penrith U20’s Grand Final squad.

I’m hoping for a great crowd early Sunday evening at Pepper Stadium to cheer on the Panthers for the final home game of the 2016 season. What a way to spend Father’s Day. Good luck to the boys!

» Intrust Super Premiership NSW: The

Penrith Panthers will head back across the ditch this weekend after they qualified for the 2016 Intrust Super Premiership Finals in eighth position.

The Panthers will take on the New Zealand Warriors for the second straight week after defeating them 36-24 last Sunday to scrape into the top eight by the skin of their teeth.

Penrith raced out of the blocks and enjoyed an early 12-0 lead with tries to Ray Lesoa and George Jennings.

However the Warriors, who were playing for a spot in the all-important top four, hit back with four consecutive tries before half-time to take a 24-12 lead into the break.

Just when it appeared the Warriors would be too strong, Penrith were able to return fire in the second half through prop Viliame Kikau, who barged his way over the line, while Zac Mackay claimed a double to seal victory.

Panthers coach Steve Georgallis has named a strong side to battle the Warriors at Mt Smart Stadium this Sunday with Malakai Watene-Zelezniak at fullback, and Te Maire Martin and captain Zach Dockar-Clay in the halves.

If Penrith defeat New Zealand they’ll advance to the second week. If they lose, they’ll be eliminated.

» Holden Cup: After a lean month of

results, the Penrith Panthers are back in business after securing a nail-biting 28-26 win over the Gold Coast Titans last Saturday afternoon in Robina.

The lead changed multiple times during the match but a penalty goal by Dylan Edwards with five to go proved the winning play.

Penrith led 10-0 early before the Titans clawed their way back with 14 unanswered points to lead by four at the break.

The Panthers hit back in the second half to edge in front 20-14 before the Titans levelled proceedings in the 55th minute.

Gold Coast took the lead back in the 64th minute to go back up 26-20, but Penrith managed to score their own try five minutes later to level the score again.

With five to go, Penrith broke the line through Caleb Aekins and earned themselves a penalty in front of the sticks.

Edwards calmly slotted it over to give the Panthers victory.

This Sunday the Panthers take on the Manly Sea Eagles at Pepper Stadium.

» Ron Massey Cup: St Marys have

recorded seven straight wins after they defeated the Western Suburbs Magpies 38-24 in the final round of the Ron Massey Cup competition.

Try scorers for St Marys included: Jamie Hill (2), Tom Eisenhuth, Geoff Daniela, Peter Scanlan, Sam Jones and Alan Eisenhuth. Adrian Davies kicked five goals.

St Marys finished the regular season in fourth position and will take on Mounties in this Sunday afternoon’s quarter final at Campbelltown Stadium.

If St Marys win, they’ll advance to the preliminary final. If they lose, they’ll live to fight another day next weekend.

t was a cold Friday night at Belmore Sports Ground in mid-May when Anthony Griffin became convinced that Nathan Cleary was the man to lead the Panthers around the park for the rest of the season.

It was the teenager’s first game in the Intrust Super Premiership after being promoted from the Holden Cup. “He looked classes above on that night,” Griffin told Sky Sports Radio.

“That was probably the night that convinced me that he was worth giving a go.”

A few weeks later Cleary made his NRL debut against the Melbourne Storm and hasn’t been out of the top team since.

Griffin said despite Cleary’s standout performance on that wet night at Belmore, he was still taking a gamble by promoting the 18-year-old into top flight football at such a young age.

“That’s the beautiful thing about sport,” he said.

“When you see someone that young and be able to go to that level, you never know whether that’s going to happen or not.”

Griffin also praised Panthers captain Matt Moylan.

“Matt’s been great the last month – he’s really lead from the front in everything he has done,” he said.

“His defence has been tremendous... and he’s got that class in attack which he’s used with a lot of control.”

P

enrith Panthers centre Waqa Blake has praised senior teammates Peter Wallace and Trent Merrin for helping him become a better, more professional player.

After debuting in first grade to mediocre reviews last season, the 21-year-old is certainly having a season to remember, and is set to play a major role in Penrith’s Finals campaign beginning next week.

Early season injuries to regular centres Dean Whare and Peta Hiku paved the way for the rangy Fijian to return to the NRL this year and, so far, he’s proving the nasty Twitter trolls wrong.

Speaking with Extra Time on Tuesday, Blake said he’s a much more confident player this year compared to in his rookie season.

“I’ve blown away all those first year cobwebs and this year I’ve been lucky enough to be back in first grade,” he said.

“With the senior group we have now in Peter Wallace and Trent Merrin, they’ve been helping

me better my game. I know there’s still a lot to work on but I’m loving the improvement so far.”

After coming through the grades being compared to none other than Greg Inglis, Blake is finally starting to reach his potential – crossing the line six times this year including a try in each of his last four games.

Blake said the biggest

improvement he’s made this year is to his professionalism.

“Last year I wasn’t being professional in what I did, not only on the field but off it,” he admitted.

“Off the field now I’m trying my best to give back to the club because I know they

give a lot to me. I’m making better decisions.”

Since making his NRL debut in 2015, Blake has been largely criticised by Panthers fans for making mistakes at crucial times in games.

While B l a k e ’ s unfortunate errors are still part of his game, he is certainly making up for his mistakes by scoring some scintillating tries.

“Last year I made heaps of errors and wasn’t able to bounce back, but after speaking to a lot of the boys and coaching staff this year, I’ve learned that I can’t let an error get to me anymore,” Blake said.

“I think that advice has really helped me

a lot this season – I just have to move past it and owe it back to the team.”

Blake has been named in Penrith’s team to take on the Manly Sea Eagles this Sunday night at Pepper Stadium.

Assuming he gets through the final round unscathed, Blake will line-up the following week in his first NRL Finals match.

And he may even put pressure on Whare and Hiku to regain their spots in Penrith’s starting side for the 2017 season.

Blake said he’s confident the Panthers can shock some teams in the Finals despite their low position.

“The plan is to go all the way,” he said.

“We just need to keep our heads down and worry about what’s in front of us.

“I think we’ll be a tough team to play.”

The NRL Competition Committee met this week to be given an update on the impact of changes to the 2016 competition, including the addition of the NRL Bunker, ahead of the Finals Series.

The group was shown data which showed more than 10 hours of play will be saved as a result of the scrum clock and drop-out clock in 2016.

An analysis of the first 25 rounds has also shown that 41 per cent of try attempts have been referred to the review officials – compared to 44 per cent in 2015. That equates to 29 fewer video referrals in 2016 compared to this time last year.

Video referral decision times are also down an average of 12 seconds compared to 2015 (an average of 65 seconds in 2016, compared to 77 seconds in 2015).

18 per cent of live decisions have also been overturned by the review official in 2016, compared to 13 per cent in 2015.

“This is an incredibly important group and today’s meeting was a great opportunity to put some early results from some of the major changes in the game to them,” NRL Head of Football Brian Canavan said.

Other key figures revealed this week included: • 34 per cent of games so far this year

have resulted in a margin of between zero and six points, while the average game margin in 2016 is 13.9 points; • 15 matches this season have resulted in Golden Point, while 40 per cent of those matches have been decided by a try; • There have been 1256 tries scored so far in 2015 (21 more than the same time in 2015, and an average of 7.1 tries per game); • Television audiences are up 16 per cent compared to 2015 (84.5 million compared to 72.7 million), while average attendances are up one per cent.

iesel’s latest release ‘Americana’ may be a covers album but it has his fingerprints all over it.

From his parents’ wedding photo that adorns the cover, to the original opening track that sets up the album as a tribute to the Lizotte family’s journey from America to Australia, ‘Americana’ features other musicians’ tracks but it’s as personal as they come.

“The whole thing is kind of a piece of folk history for me, about my family and the songs that were being played in my house growing up,” Mark Lizotte (aka Diesel) said.

“A lot of the album tracks I remember from spending time in America so they have that soundtrack quality for big chunks of my life.

“It ended up as being almost a musical biography.”

Moving to Australia in 1971 was a big risk for Mark’s parents to take, especially during a time when little was known about Australian culture.

“In their minds they didn’t have many references, apart from knowing there’s kangaroos,” Mark laughed.

“So it was very odd for my parents to just pick up and move all of us out here.

There wasn’t an awful lot of that going on where we lived, I can tell you that.”

Laced with memories of his home country, the album features some of music’s biggest names with Mark putting his own unique spin on tracks including ‘Ring of Fire’ by Johnny Cash and ‘Rave On’ by Buddy Holly.

“My intention with a lot of the songs on the album was just to kind of give them a different treatment, take them almost to another part of the country,” he said.

“Like for instance with James Taylor’s ‘Fire and Rain’ I imagined giving it a Memphis sort of feel.”

But it was the iconic American anthem ‘Born to Run’ by Bruce Springsteen that was one of the toughest, and most rewarding, tracks for Mark to reinterpret.

“I’m glad I decided to step up and have a go,” he said.

“It could have been easy to walk away from it and there’s a plethora of songs that would have filled that hole.

“I just thought I’m really fond of it and why not have a go at it, just because it’s such a taboo thing I didn’t see why I shouldn’t at least try.”

There’s trouble in the Avengers camp in ‘Captain America: Civil War’.

After the actions of the team cause collateral damage, the government decides it’s time to intervene.

The new system of accountability doesn’t go down so well with Captain America (Chris Evans), who believes superheroes should never be under the constrains of the government.

Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) is in support of the intervention and the pair’s differences lead to a feud which forces Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremey Renner) to choose a side.

The all-star cast also includes Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen.

The film has received overwhelm-

Ê It appears viewers won’t be seeing ‘House Husbands’ this year, with Channel Nine delaying airing the new series until 2017. The network was initially scheduled to air the latest season this year but it appears that will not happen. Expect to see it in February now.

I give it two weeks before it’s buried in a slot to die a slow death. Ê Fortunately, it’s not all bad at Seven because I’m absolutely loving the new series ‘Australia’s Cheapest Weddings’. Ê ABC3 will rebrand to ABC ME from September 19. The channel is repositioning itself as a broadcast/digital service with a new ABC ME app for school-aged kids. New programs will include a weekly pop culture review show ‘News to Me’, sci-fi animation ‘Prisoner Zero’ and shortform documentary series ‘This Is Me’. Ê In case you didn’t notice this week, ‘Australian Survivor’ is now screening three nights a week to compete with ‘The Block’ on Nine and ‘Zumbo’s Just Desserts’ on Seven. Being a dad can be a bit tricky, there’s no instruction manual and kids are so different and no doubt we’ve all made mistakes, but we still want the best for our kids.

So how can we know which way to go?

In the Bible’s book of Ephesians, the Apostle Paul has a helpful instruction, “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”

When Paul says “Don’t exasperate your children”, he means things like; dads, don’t make it hard for your children. Aim to be consistent; not saying one thing and doing another. Set realistic

Most abscesses are caused by cat fights, so the best way to prevent them is by keeping your cat indoors as much as possible. It is also essential to get your cats desexed; entire male cats are very territorial and are much more likely to fight than desexed cats. It is also important to see your veterinarian as soon as you think your cat has been in a fight. You can usually prevent an abscess from forming with early treatment for any injuries.

There are an estimated 25 million pets in Australia.

That’s 63 per cent of households with a furry, feathery, scaly or otherwise animalistic friend – one of the highest in the world, according to the Animal Health Alliance.

However, it appears that we have a particular love for man’s best friend, with 4.2 million dogs calling Australia home. Using data from the Animal Health Alliance, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission shows that a dog costs, on average, just over $1,000 a year, and that doesn’t include the

boundaries.

But Paul also says, “bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”

Like a good sports coach, a good father leads by example. He’ll work hard at trying to introduce his children to Jesus so they can grow up as mature young men and women of God. He’ll pray for them and let them know Jesus loves them and laid down his life for them to forgive them and give them the promise of heaven. He’ll even take them to church.

That’s a lot to think about isn’t it?

Dads, the best thing you can do for your kids is help and encourage them to know Jesus. So why not get to know Jesus yourself and here’s hoping you have a very happy Father’s Day!

Last week I went to one of my favourite new veggie cafes and ordered a meal which consisted of cheesy, sauce covered hot chips.

It was not a ‘cheat’ meal and I didn’t feel ‘guilty’ after eating it. Was it highly nutritious? Of course not. Did it bring me pleasure? It sure did!

But unfortunately we are often made to feel bad about our food choices.

You see there is nothing wrong with enjoying the occasional nutrient lacking meal purely because you like the taste.

things that one meal is not going to have much of an impact on my health because the majority of my diet is made up of nutrient dense, plant based foods.

Now I’m not saying we should all just go nuts and eat whatever the hell we want, because there are health consequences to the way we eat and certain health conditions do require more restrictive

diets. But I do think we need to calm down and look at the big picture.

As a generally healthy person is that one meal going to give me Type 2 diabetes?

Probably not. But if I was eating like that frequently then of course I’d be putting myself at risk of numerous health problems.

You see our current view of food is one of extremes.

We label individual items as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ depending on which nutrient we are demonising this week.

We get told carbohydrates are ‘bad’ so we remove pasta from our diet; sugar is ‘evil’ so we have to give up cake for good.

I see this mentality all the time, in society and in the media.

One of the articles I always find ridiculous is the ‘foods nutrition experts won’t eat’ lists.

Inevitably it’s full of foods that every nutritionist and dietitian I know has at some point eaten and will most likely continue to eat.

There is no perfect diet.

There is no ‘good’ food or ‘bad’ food, there is just food.

As long as we eat in moderation and consume mostly nutritious foods there is nothing wrong with the occasional plate of sauce covered hot chips.

Turning back Time

Changing face of an evolving Council in Penrith

One year ago...

ho would have thought after the State and Federal Elections in the last 17 months, that Penrith residents would be

going to the polls again.

Penrith locals have long been voting for their local government representatives, but they haven’t always been Councillors for Penrith City Council.

Penrith City Council was a far cry from the Council it is today, and began with the formation of Penrith as a District Council 173 years ago in 1843.

NSW Government documents show that from 1843, Penrith District Council had one Warden, and just six Councillors, a

lot less than the 15 Councillors on Penrith Council today.

In 1860, locals gathered signatures for a petition to change the Penrith District Council into a municipality.

Despite gathering hundreds of signatures, it took 11 years to incorporate the Penrith District Council into the Municipality of Penrith.

After it did so in 1871, surrounding councils followed, such as St Marys in 1890, Castlereagh in 1895, Mulgoa in 1893 and Nepean Shire (when it absorbed Mulgoa Municipality) in 1913.

From 1871 onwards there were at least nine Alderman in the Municipality of Penrith.

In 1949, the local municipal councils – Penrith, St Marys, Castlereagh and Nepean Shire – amalgamated into a new

and larger Municipality of Penrith, a little closer to what we have today.

10 years later, in 1959, the Municipality of Penrith was proclaimed a city, and Penrith City Council had 12 Alderman across four wards, plus one popularly elected Mayor.

In 1963, Council adopted to have three wards – East, North and South – with four Alderman in each, and by 1969 the community no longer voted for their Mayor and Council dropped back to 12 Alderman.

In 1987, the number of Alderman increased to 15, and it wasn’t until 1994 that Alderman were referred to as Councillors.

Now, on September 10, we will be voting in 15 Councillors to represent the three wards on Penrith City Council for four years.

The NSW Governor General David Hurley toured The Joan and the Penrith Regional Art Gallery to see the best of Penrith’s performing and visual arts.

A local woman sent the Weekender a heartbreaking personal story of the loss of a loved one as a result of mental health issues.

We spoke with the owner of Vicary’s Winery who was sadly closing the 90-year-old Luddenham business to make way for the western Sydney airport.

Notice of Planning Assessment Commission Meeting Erskine Park Resource Management Facility, 85-87 Quarry Road, Erskine Park – D430/16 The Department of Planning and Environment (DP&E) has completed its assessment of the above proposal.

The application has been referred to the Planning Assessment Commission (the Commission) for determination, under the terms of the Minister’s delegation.

The Commission to determine the application comprises Mr Gordon Kirkby (chair), Dr Maurice Evans and Mr Ross Carter.

Due to the level of public interest in the proposal, the Commission will be meeting to hear public views on the Assessment Report and recommendation, prior to determining the proposal. oyota Australia and its dealers have earned a gold national award from the world’s widest circulating magazine.

The Reader’s Digest Quality Service Award 2016 was based on a national reader survey of customer service across businesses and companies in different industries.

Toyota achieved a 76 per cent rating to claim the gold award ahead of the NRMA and Kmart in the highly competitive car service category.

The extensive survey covered 30 different service categories, with the strict proviso that respondents must have used a service within that particular category.

Companies were rated on five criteria: personalisation, understanding, simplicity, reliability and satisfaction, with simplicity defined as making the process quick and easy for customers, and satisfaction as delivering on customer expectations.

Respondents were asked to rank service providers based on their personal experience, including the quality, speed and ease of service.

Toyota Australia’s Executive Director Sales and Marketing, Tony Cramb, said the award demonstrated the success of initiatives designed to provide customers with a personalised experience that is exceptional.

he Panthers made netball history last week when they became the first team to win the inaugural Netball NSW Premier League Under 20’s competition.

The Panthers team – which was made up of players and staff from the Penrith, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury District Netball Associations – took out the allimportant decider with a convincing 63-50 victory over minor premiers UTS St George Sparks.

However, despite the dominant final scoreline, the Panthers didn’t exactly have

it all go their own way, with the Sparks enjoying an early 15-8 lead.

Fortunately, the Panthers were able to rally and even took a slight 29-25 lead at the half-time break.

The Sparks got off to a great start in the second half, returning fire early to draw level. However, just when it looked like the girls from UTS may go on with it, the Panthers came storming back to lead by nine heading into the final quarter.

The Panthers were in total control during the fourth, with the Sparks unable to claw their way back despite giving it their all.

Speaking with the Weekender, Panthers coach Jaqua Heddle said it was an amazing effort to defeat the competition leaders.

“UTS were minor premiers and we actually never beat them during the season.

They were the only team in the competition that we couldn’t beat until the Grand Final,” she said.

“Our team is a really young side, so to achieve what they have is remarkable.”

What was even more remarkable was the Panthers’ road to Finals.

Three weeks from the post-season the Panthers were out of contention and staring down the barrel of elimination.

“We had our backs against the wall and were in a must-win situation during the final three rounds to stay in the top four.

We enjoyed a six game winning streak in the end,” Heddle said.

Heddle believes the strength and character her side built on their way to the Finals put them in good stead on Grand Final day.

“We were down by seven after 10 minutes but the girls were committed to the team goal and stayed composed,” she said.

“I think having five must-win games leading into the Grand Final builds character, you become resilient and there’s a desire to must-win.

“We certainly had momentum on our side.”

In the Opens competition, the Sutherland Stingrays were crowned champions this year.

Becoming a Wanderer for a day Weekender journalist straps on the boots for special game celebrating football’s history NATHAN TAYLOR

ast week I received an email from the Western Sydney Wanderers inviting me to be a member of the Wanderers XI for their annual Heritage Match against The King’s School Old Boys, to be held on the grounds of The King’s School at North Parramatta.

First, a little bit of history on why the match is played.

While the occasional football game was played in Hyde Park during the mid-1860s, the general belief was that the sport was not yet popular enough to be formalised in NSW. According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald in 1880, football had not “prospered sufficiently in the colony to justify the introduction of the Association game”.

The excerpt came from a report on a meeting held to establish the game officially in NSW. The meeting of around 40 men, held on August 3, 1880 took place in Sydney where it decided the game of association football would be played under English rules.

On the same day, English emigrate John Walter Fletcher founded an XI that would

The first ever recorded football match in NSW would be played on Saturday, August 14, 1880 between The King’s School and the Wanderers XI. The match, played at Parramatta Common, was watched by roughly 1000 people and is regarded as the official birth

of the game of football in NSW. To celebrate the historic occasion, each year the Western Sydney Wanderers “re-play” the match involving ex-Socceroos stars, former Wanderers players and Sydney media identities. This year, I was one of them.

Having never played a proper game of football before, apart from the odd muck around game with friends, I was nervously excited heading into the match.

The day before the game I purchased my first pair of shin pads and gave my footy boots a bit of a polish.

When I arrived at the pitch I received the famous ‘Red and Black’ Wanderers kit and met my famous teammates, which included ex-Socceroo Craig Foster, Matilda Catherin Cannuli, former Wanderers players Adam D’Apuzzo and Jason Trifiro, and new W-League coach Rich Byrne.

My first assignment was to play rightback. Once I figured out exactly what right-back did and where they stood, the nerves started to really settle in.

Due to the fast-paced nature of the game along with my naivety, much of the game is a blur but I distinctly remember Foster and ‘Glovesy’ the goalkeeper giving me some ‘lip’ or pointers throughout the match – I couldn’t really tell!

I must admit the support from my teammates, when I told them I was a newbie, was outstanding and I truly have a newfound respect for footballers – on all levels of the game – from now on.

In the end we lost to the more polished The King’s School outfit 7-3, which I’m told was a lot better than last year’s dismal 8-0 effort.

As for taking up football on a full-time basis? I think I’ll stick to writing about it!

veryone’s favourite summer pastime, cricket, is still the most popular sport in the country with a staggering 1.3 million partici-

pants.

In NSW/ACT, the sport is continuing to get bigger and bigger with latest data showing that during the 2015/16 season there were 393,082 participants of all ages, which was a steep rise of almost 11 per cent on the previous season.

The number of people playing cricket in NSW has more than doubled in six years, largely thanks to the introduction of entry level programs like Club and School Milo In2Cricket and Milo T20 Blast.

Locally, cricket is as popular as ever according to Penrith Cricket Club President, Paul Goldsmith.

“There’s been a lot of investment in growing the game and, in particular, at the grassroots level,” he said.

“We have a close relationship with the local junior cricket association and we’re trying to strengthen our relationship with them so they see the Penrith Grade Cricket Club as the natural progression.”

2015/16 Australian Cricket Census figures also reveal the continuous strong growth

in the female form of the game. Women and girls now make up almost a quarter of all participants playing cricket.

“I think cricket is one of the few summer sports that’s strongly encouraging girls to play,” Goldsmith said.

“I’m seeing more and more girls play cricket after watching their brothers and fathers play.

“The participation among females is growing and there is a big focus on that which we, at Penrith, wholeheartedly support.”

NSW Minister for Sport and Penrith MP, Stuart Ayres, said the massive popularity of cricket is continuing to unite communities across the state, bringing huge social, health, educational and cultural benefits to society.

“Doubling participation in six years is also testament to the work of umpires, coaches and administrators and it’s especially encouraging to see the massive growth in female participation,” he said.

“When NSW is strong our national teams are strong and it’s teams like the Sydney Thunder and Sydney Sixers that inspire young people to reach the highest levels of their sport.”

Around the grounds GRIDIRON: The Nepean Ducks will kick-off their 2016 Gridiron NSW season this Saturday afternoon when they take on reigning champions Sydney University in the Division 1 competition.

AUSSIE RULES: The Penrith Rams have lost their semi-final, going down to the Camden Cats 103-71 in the AFL Sydney Division 2 competition.

Phillip Aumann and Brayden Wilson topscored for the Rams with three

goals each. Despite the loss, the Rams remain in the hunt for a spot in the Grand Final and will play the North Shore Bombers this Sunday night at Blacktown International Sportspark.

FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers have geared up for the NPL2 semi-finals with one of the most entertaining matches of the season.

Needing an unlikely six goal win to claim the premiership against Sydney FC, the title was not to be but the Wanderers finished the regular season as runners-up and remained undefeated against their crosstown rivals following a 3-3 draw.

Having finished in second position, the Wanderers have earned a week off to recharge the batteries before their big semi-final match next weekend.

FOOTBALL: Congratulations to Western Sydney’s U18’s team who won the NPL2 premiership last Sunday in the club’s first season in the competition.

That dominance was rewarded further as Brendon Santalab came off the bench to score a late double – the first a brilliant header before following it up with a composed finish off a Steve Lustica cross.

The four-goal win means the Wanderers will next take on their toughest assignment of the competition so far when they match up against Socceroos star Tim Cahill and Melbourne City.

Date and location details are yet to be confirmed for the blockbuster clash, that’s expected to be a near sell-out when it’s held in late September.

“We want to go all the way now,” Wanderers coach, Tony Popovic said.

“We have put ourselves in a position where we can go further and hopefully we do that.”

Meanwhile, Western Sydney have announced the re-signing of Ellie Carpenter, Australia’s youngest athlete at the recent Rio Olympics.
