Law-abiding gun owners “wife-bashed”, says Councillor DALE DRINKWATER

ohn Wayne, the most famous gun-wielding cowboy of them all, said that “tomorrow hopes we have learned something from yesterday”. However, is an attempt to erode Australia’s tough gun laws that were implemented some 20 years ago learning the lessons of the past? Conservative Penrith City Councillor Marcus Cornish believes the current restrictions on licensed gun owners are too severe and need reviewing. “Law-abiding gun owners are being ‘wife-bashed’ as the authorities can’t get to the real criminals and illegal suppliers, so they take it out on the innocent,” he said. “People aren’t going to get a license for a gun to rob a bank, licensed gun holders are not the problem – it’s the illegal ones.” The often controversial Cr Cornish blamed a current shift “toward the left” and political correctness for what he calls “poor policy”. “Poor policies cause perpetrators to be viewed as victims and victims as perpetrators,” Cr Cornish said “Legal gun owners are treated as if they are doing something illegal.” Story continues on » p. 7

Heartless thieves steal precious items 76-year-old widow’s desperate plea for the return of stolen jewellery and personal mementos DALE DRINKWATER

ust after lunch last Friday, 76-year-old Betty Coleman left her Leonay home for lawn bowls practice. When she returned later that afternoon, it was obvious that something wasn’t quite right. “When I turned into my house, the first thing I noticed was a sock in my driveway,” she said. “I got out of the car because I don’t have a remote control for the garage, and I looked to see if there were any parcels near the front door. “My blinds looked funny, a bit skewwhiff, so I walked up and the window was open, the screen was on the patio, and I realised someone had broken in.” She would soon discover that precious and irreplaceable personal items had been stolen from her home. “When I got in I could see in the hallway that the lights were left on,” she said. “I don’t know if I even thought that someone could still be in there.” Mrs Coleman said she walked into her bedroom and it was a mess – the drawers were on the floor and her belongings were everywhere.

J

It was clear that the house had been ransacked. “Someone had even gone into the spare rooms and pulled everything out before realising nothing was in there,” Mrs Coleman said. The same thing happened to Mrs Coleman over 10 years ago, and as she has been widowed for almost 34 years, she is very cautious about keeping her windows and doors locked. “The thing that really upsets me are the items my husband gave me because he doesn’t exist anymore,” Mrs Coleman said. “I’m a bit dubious about going out now.” Mrs Coleman’s daughter, Lee Gray said the family has been devastated. “They have stolen possibly nothing of monetary value but huge sentimental value,” she said. “They took her mum’s wedding and engagement rings, my dad’s signet and wedding ring, jewellery that he gave my mum and jewellery from other relatives which is quite old. “They also stole mum’s gold medals for golf and dad’s ancient Pentax camera.” Mrs Gray said it would mean a lot to get the items back, but her mother said she won’t hold her breath.

abor simply cannot win next year’s Federal Election with Bill Shorten as leader. Phar Lap is more likely to rise from the dead and win next Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup than Shorten is to ever be sitting in the Prime Minister’s chair. Even the strongest Labor supporters I speak to admit that Shorten is a dead man walking, with the party facing certain annihilation at the polls if a change is not made soon. Shorten’s political grave was dug once the Liberals moved on Tony Abbott, installing the likable Malcolm Turnbull as Prime Minister. The polls so far have proven the Coalition powerbrokers right, with Tuesday’s Newspoll showing Shorten’s worst ever preferred Prime Minister rating of 17 per cent. Turnbull enjoys a 63 per cent rating, while the Coalition’s primary vote is now 10 points clear of Labor. While I still strongly disagree with the Coalition’s dumping of a sitting Prime Minister, and I still believe it well could haunt Turnbull down the track, it is clear that the Liberal Party will win next year’s election – a fact that wasn’t so certain under Tony Abbott’s leadership. Labor must act on Shorten now. He is simply not likable in the electorate, dogged by the reality that he was the architect of the Rudd/Gillard/Rudd mess. He is a constant reminder of perhaps the worst six years in Australia’s modern political history. He is also a reminder of what swinging voters dislike most about Labor – its strong union influence and the questions that can often arise as a result. Ever since Turnbull took the top job,

Shorten has been like a deer in the headlights, unsure of how to compete and offering very little of substance. New Labor Party rules make it more difficult to remove a leader than in the past, but of course where there’s a will, there’s a way. But to be honest, Shorten should realise that he is no chance of leading Labor to election victory and simply stand aside to give the party the best possible chance at victory. This is the moment when Shorten can decide whether he’s really in it for Labor and the good of the country, or if he’s just in it for Bill. Labor really needs to be in election mode now, especially in tight seats such as Lindsay. I strongly believe that we will go to an election in March or April next year. Based on current figures, the Government would be foolish not to.

News...............................................1-31 Business.................................32-33 History ............................................34

As it stands Labor would not be ready for an election in crucial seats such as Lindsay. Right now Labor’s key representatives in this region are the very capable Prue Car, who has her work cut out for her as State Londonderry MP, and veteran Councillor John Thain who is one of the party’s stable and most reliable faces in Penrith. Both are prominent Labor voices but the party needs a strong federal representative who can start to do the groundwork required to convince the electorate that they’re worth voting for. But Labor’s top priority at the moment is figuring out who should replace Shorten. The obvious choice is Anthony Albanese. He’s already stated he won’t challenge Shorten before the next election but we know that means about as much as me saying I’ll give up beer this weekend. For me, the obvious answer lies in the very talented Tanya Plibersek. As much as I think Albanese is a better option than Shorten as far as closing the gap in the polls, Plibersek stands out as a fresh face, perhaps offering a new era for Labor and giving them a second shot at installing a female Prime Minister. She was around during the Rudd/ Gillard/Rudd mess, but managed to escape relatively unscathed. Plibersek is extremely articulate and offers intelligence, experience and the right level of charisma that Labor needs right now. Malcolm Turnbull’s honeymoon in the polls will only continue unless Labor finally acts and cuts Shorten loose.

Carmageddon thanks to new airport Council to continue rail link battle, but State Government still doesn’t get it DALE DRINKWATER

P

Mayor Karen McKeown has just launched a campaign to gain community support for an airport rail link. Photo: Megan Dunn State Minister for Transport, Andrew Constance, was at Penrith Station last week, and said there was a lot of work still to be done. “We’ve got to get the investment right,

enrith Mayor Karen McKeown said she has not received one solid reason why a rail link to Badgerys Creek airport can’t be ready when the major project opens. At Penrith City Council last Thursday, the Weekender asked Cr McKeown whether she had received a legitimate answer from State or Federal Governments on the matter. “Unfortunately, no. I’m sorry,” she replied. “At a briefing with the Federal Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development, we were told rail is a state responsibility.” Now that the Environmental Impact Statement for a western Sydney airport is ready for feedback, Council has launched a campaign to round up community support for a rail link to Penrith. Cr McKeown said not only would rail bring more benefits to Penrith, it would be more difficult to go back and ‘retrofit’ a rail link after the airport begins operation. “All commentators say it’s desperately needed,” she said. “But, the question still remains, what is the reason why this can’t be done?”

but we’ve also got to get the timing right and make sure our homework is done and at this stage we are nowhere near it,” he said. “It’s a combination of potentially looking at heavy rail, potentially metro, potentially high speed, but at the moment it’s early days.” Mr Constance had the support of Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres, who said it’s absolutely important to get the alignments correct. “We have to do that first, long before anyone makes a decision about when the rail line comes and what it looks like,” he said. Mr Ayres said the airport is still 10 years away, and rushing into a commitment for a type of rail line and when, will get NSW into trouble. “If you want to walk down that path you can put an ALP logo on your chest and waste a whole heap of money,” he said. “A little bit of discipline needs to be injected into this debate, and I’ve got no doubt we will get the right solution in the right amount of time and we will do it without wasting literally billions of dollars of taxpayers funds.” Opening the airport without a rail link would force millions of extra cars onto Sydney’s already congested road network every year.

Penrith: Suspension and big fine for Detective Sergeant

Penrith: Costly wee for man after multiple charges laid

Detective Sergeant Andrew John Clarke, who is attached to Penrith Local Area Command, has been fined $2000 and disqualified from driving for nine months after he was caught drink driving in July. Mr Clarke has not held a valid driver’s license for 25 years and somehow managed to avoid his current license status being reviewed, until the July incident. The Detective Sergeant was pulled over on Hawkesbury Valley Way in Windsor at about 9.55am on July 10 and was given a Road Side Breath Test (RBT), allegedly returning a reading of .17. It’s understood the officer never renewed his license. He was found guilty of ‘drive with high range PCA’ and ‘never licensed person drive vehicle on road’.

A man was arrested and charged with a variety of offences, including drug offences, after police found him urinating on a wall last weekend. At about 12.45pm on Sunday, October 25, police were patrolling along Henry Street in Penrith when they saw a man urinating on a wall in Gaymark Lane. After a discussion with the man, police had cause to search his vehicle. The 19-year-old, from Whalan, was charged with ‘possess prohibited drug’, ‘possess equipment to make drug’, ‘custody of laser pointer’, and two counts of ‘custody of knife in public place’. His bail was refused and he was due to appear at Penrith Local Court on Monday, October 26.

Penrith: Clothing stolen from sporting goods store

Jordan Springs: Drug arrests likely to continue

Police are investigating after a break and enter at a sporting goods store on High Street in Penrith. It’s alleged at about 1.45am on Monday, October 26, a male turned up to the store in a silver ute. Security footage then shows him leaving the premises and returning at 2.25am. It’s alleged he used cutters to cut through a brick wall to gain entry into the store. He allegedly left with a significant amount of clothing. He is described as being in his mid-20s to early 30s, of Caucasian appearance, of solid build and around 175 to 183 centimetres tall.

Police officers attached to Penrith LAC formed Strike Force Pykett earlier this year, a strike force aimed at targeting drug use and supplying of drugs in the Penrith area. The strike force was formed around April, and police say the force will be continuing for a long time. One recent arrest made by the strike force occurred last Friday, October 23 at 9am. Officers attended an address on Watkin Street in Jordan Springs. A 30-year-old male was charged with ‘supply prohibited drug greater than the indictable quantity’. He’ll appear in court on November 12.

Funding will help close the gap

Story continued from » p. 1

Federal grant to give Indigenous kids in Penrith more support JADE ALIPRANDI

ocal Indigenous children will be given the best possible start in life thanks to the dedicated team at Nepean Community and Neighbourhood Services (NCNS). NCNS received a huge boost this week with the announcement of $470,000 in Federal Government funding over the next three years. The funding is part of the Federal Government’s Indigenous Advancement Strategy grant. “The NCNS have a strong commitment to the Aboriginal community, providing Aboriginal programs in the Penrith area for over 15 years,” CEO of NCNS, Joy Impiombato said. “We know that the best way we can close the gap on Indigenous disadvantage is by getting kids off to the best possible start in life.” Federal Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott said the funding will enable NCNS to deliver projects which will improve outcomes for Indigenous Australians living in the local area. “I’ve seen first-hand the importance of NCNS programs in our community including their work with families to improve students’ school attendance, as

L

Fiona Scott with CEO of NCNS Joy Impiombato and a member of the organisation well as increase early education participation,” Ms Scott said. “This funding not only provides certainty for the organisation, but will provide Indigenous children with more opportunities to succeed in cultural, sporting and academic endeavours, allow more children to have access to life-saving immunisations, offer more

opportunities for Aboriginal families to participate in parenting workshops and much more.” The funding will go towards expanding the already successful NCNS programs. A new Indigenous support play group will open in St Marys and referrals to early intervention services will be increased among other things.

“The way current policy is heading, that being the disarming of Australia, the only non-government people with firearms will be terrorists and criminals,” Cr Cornish said. Cr Cornish commended licensed gun owners, and said a low incident rate is something they should be proud of. Incidents have not always been this low, however, and in the 10 years before the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, there were 12 massacres involving firearms, that claimed the lives of 72 people. Shaken up by Port Arthur and the deaths of 35 people, the Howard Government bought back over 600,000 guns from the community and implemented tougher laws through the National Firearms Agreement. Since 1996 when private sales were prohibited and guns then required registration, the number of homicides, suicides and robberies by firearms dropped. Michelle Ellery, a strong advocate for the safety of women and children in Penrith, holds a gun license and has her own firearm but doesn’t think laws should be loosened. “The sport is so strictly regimented it keeps the honest ones honest,” she said. “The ones that are committed for the sport will stay, and the others that are influenced by other things would be weaned out by the process.” Tweet your view: @wwpenrith.

ill you pay just over $1 per week to increase Council’s services in your area? Residents could see their rates increase an extra $55 in the next financial year, if Council adopts a Special Rate Variation (SRV) of 2.4 per cent. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown has launched a campaign to extend the current Asset Renewal and Established Areas Strategy (AREAS) and add the extra SRV. “AREAS enabled us to do more than just the bare minimum with many of our roads and buildings, and has paid off in the long run by avoiding major repairs and upgrades,” she said. “It also enabled us to respond to calls from our community for more money to be spent in our older suburbs through more investment in public spaces, neighbourhood and social programs to support residents and increased focus on litter and graffiti removal.” The 10 year AREAS rate variation was introduced in 2006 with community support, and will finish in 2016. Cr McKeown said continuing AREAS is essential both economically and socially, and an additional SRV will ensure selfsufficiency into the future.

W

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown. Photo: Megan Dunn With both the continuation of AREAS and the extra 2.4 per cent SRV, residents could pay an extra $250 in rates over the next four years. Of that, $117.40 will fund initiatives under the SRV and $132.60 will go toward the AREAS rate peg. Other options include continuing AREAS without the SRV at an extra $127.60 over four years, or not adopting either of the two proposals. Council is requesting feedback from the community on the proposed changes, and more information can be found at www.yoursaypenrith.com.au.

Transport

Station overhaul is long overdue State Government confirms huge upgrade as population and passenger numbers boom DALE DRINKWATER

he preliminary plans for the biggest upgrade to Penrith Station in 50 years are now available for community feedback. Minister for Transport Andrew Constance met with Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres last Friday to announce the progress in planning the upgrade, which is seen as a huge win for Penrith. Mr Constance said it will be a big development that will improve accessibility, safety and cater for a growing population. “Given the growth we are experiencing to the north of the station, it is key to improve the overall amenity and access,” he said. “Accessibility is key. The plan is designed to improve access, particularly for people with disabilities, seniors and mums with prams.” Currently, stairs are the main way to access the overpass, making it difficult for certain demographics to move between the north and south of the station. Mr Ayres said Penrith Station is one of the biggest beneficiaries in the state’s Transport Access Program and this access issue will be improved.

T

“It’s a significant improvement to concourses, and a new free pedestrian bridge that allows for greater movement between Thornton and the CBD,” Mr Ayres said. “We are making improvements to the bus terminal structure so more buses can move freely in and out of the station, and better access points for ‘kiss and ride’.” The preliminary design includes new lifts and stairs to the platforms, a new station concourse, improved interchange areas and upgrades to lighting and CCTV. The upgrades don’t stop there, with the planned construction of a bicycle storage facility, and another 300 space multistorey car park. Conservative Penrith City Councillor Marcus Cornish highlighted the lack of an escalator in the design. “They’re putting in three new elevators, but if elevators were so efficient supermarkets would just have them and not escalators,” he said. “Elevators are very inefficient because they move people in one hit and not at a constant rate.” The community can access the Review of Environmental Factors document at Penrith City Council or at www.transport. nsw.gov.au/projects.

Marjorie and Graham Elphick JADE ALIPRANDI

A St Marys couple was named NSW Grandparents of the Year last Sunday. Marjorie and Graham Elphick were awarded the NSW Grandparents of the Year Award for their work at St Marys North Public School over the past 20 years. “It’s great to be recognised for all the work we do in the area,” Mrs Elphick told the Weekender. “It’s also great to be recognised for being grandparents – we really do love it.” The pair have been married for 53 years, have 11 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren and help out at the school with their breakfast club. Minister for Ageing, John Ajaka said Grandparents Day is an initiative of the NSW Government to pay tribute to those older Australians who go beyond the traditional grandparent role. “Today is the day to take a moment to recognise and celebrate the enormous contribution made by the older people in our lives, be it the love and support of your grandparents or the dedication of older community leaders,” Mr Ajaka said last Sunday. “I congratulate the many grandparents and older Australians in our community who are deserving of recognition for their important contribution.” Mr and Mrs Elphick said they love what they do. “Being a grandparent and volunteering at the school as well as continuing with our other projects is what helps keep us young,” Mrs Elphick said. The NSW Grandparents of the Year Awards is an annual event.

rs C’s Cupcakes played its part and gave back to the women of Penrith when the local business took part in Kyle and Jackie O’s equal pay day campaign this week. The campaign started as part of the lobby for equal pay rights between men and women and involved businesses providing women with a 20 per cent discount on their purchase, with Mrs C’s Cupcakes offering a 20 per cent discount on every cupcake purchased. KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O realised that

M

from Tuesday, October 27, women were technically working for free until the end of the year, prompting the team to create this campaign. Owner of Mrs C’s Cupcakes, Sharon Carter, said her and her husband Jon were more than willing to be involved in the campaign. “I believe women do work just as hard as men, especially if they are in the same role and in the same job – everyone is entitled to be paid the same as each other,” she said. “To top it off, in most cases, the woman then has to come home to that extra little bit of responsibility if they have a family.”

Some 70 businesses took part in the campaign with many continuing to offer the discounts. Mrs C’s Cupcakes is currently in the process of hiring a male pastry chef and currently has one female employee who gets paid based on the award. “Our staff get paid what they are each entitled to based on the award and are entitled to equal pay packets if they do the same job as each other,” Mrs Carter said. Coffee shops, hair salons, restaurants, party services and different website services were among some of the industries and stores who joined the campaign.

Quiet achievers are market leaders From a facility in Emu Plains, Australia’s largest manufacturer of motor homes continues to thrive DALE DRINKWATER

ight under our noses in Emu Plains, Australia’s largest manufacturer of motor homes has broken into the caravan market. Avida is proving that success in the manufacturing industry in Australia and western Sydney comes with innovation and forward thinking. With 40 per cent of the motorhome market, Director Ben Binns said Avida has now branched into the larger and cheaper market of caravans. “The motorhome market is about 1500 units per year and the caravan market is 20,000, so there’s a lot of room for growth in there,” he said. “Instead of products starting at $100,000 we’ve brought it down to $50,000. Like anything, when we get volume through, that’s what helps us in the long run.” From the floor to the upholstery, Avida not only assembles, but manufactures every element of its vehicles under the one roof. With eight engineers on site, Avida also keeps all of its research and design in house, to ensure it is at the forefront of innovation.

R

Avida’s Billy Falconer and Ben Binns with State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres

“As you can see it’s cutting edge technology for a caravan that’s leading the market and that’s where we want to be,” Mr Binns said. “That’s why we have such a large research and design area and why we focus on innovation so much.” Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres said Avida’s strength in the market is a huge success story that locals need to know. “I would guess and say that very few people who live in Penrith know that the largest motor home manufacturer in the country is right in the middle of their community, and they probably don’t know it employs 200 people, most of which are locals,” he said. “It’s a fantastic Australian business and a success story, and it’s right in the heart of our community.” Mr Ayres said western Sydney businesses can learn from the actions of Avida. “It is a really strong signal to other businesses that you should invest in your own research and development and your own products, back Australian ingenuity, back the quality and talent of local engineers,” he said. “If you do that, you can make a competitive product that is sold across the country, all from our hometown in Penrith.”

We need more than planes Earlier this month the Federal Government released important information about the proposed Badgerys Creek airport, including the likely flight paths, in an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and Airport Plan. While the airport planning allows for future rail on the site, Council believes this should be operating even before the airport opens. People on both sides of politics agree the airport needs a rail link to be viable – we see it as so much more than that. A rail link connecting to the Western Line at Penrith would also stimulate the large areas of employment land around the airport site and beyond, creating new jobs. Every day 65,000 people leave Penrith to go to work, sitting on congested roads and crowded trains. So many extra jobs could be available in western Sydney and within an easy commute if the North and South West Growth Centres were connected. The Sydney Science Park, located within the Broader Western Sydney Employment Area, can only reach its full potential if serviced by rail. This new rail link could cut commuting time for our residents dramatically!

We don’t want just an airport. An airport without direct rail connections does not give us what we need. We are calling on residents to take a short survey and help make the case at: www.surveymonkey.com/r/extendrail. Council and the community has 60 days (until December 18) to digest and make submissions on the thousands of pages of information in the EIS. We’ve been lobbying, and will continue to do so for a minimum 90 days to provide a response on the EIS. The airport has been on the drawing board for 70 years – surely we deserve more than 60 days to understand what the impacts will be. I also encourage you to find out as much as you can at the Government’s dedicated airport page www.westernsydneyairport.gov.au or by attending one of the information sessions being held in the coming month and making a submission about any concerns. This is our opportunity to have our say. Have a great weekend and I’ll see you in next week’s edition.

Education

Local students to benefit after funding windfall for schools DALE DRINKWATER

amison High School’s 1050 students are just a fraction of local kids who will benefit from increased funding from the State Government. In 2016, schools in the Penrith electorate will share $9.1 million of the Gonski agreement’s funding, up $1.4 million from 2015. The funds are distributed more flexibly through a Resource Allocation Model (RAM), allowing Principals like Jamison High’s Gregory Lill to allocate funds where his school needs it most. Mr Lill said the total $783,062 in 2016, up an extra $137,000, will support the school’s literacy and special needs programs, and make sure all students can access the curriculum. “Next year we will be looking at an occupational therapist to work with the junior years, and to work on basics with kids as we have an autism unit here too, he said. “I’m trying to increase the capacity of our staff to deal with issues that they face, with a focus on learning design in the classroom. State Penrith MP, Stuart Ayres said the yearly RAM funding is flexible and allows Principals to focus on their school’s needs.

TELL THEM IT JUST WON’T FLY An airport without a rail link doesn’t work for Penrith

Penrith MP Stuart Ayres with Jamison High School students last week “This needs-based funding can be used in a variety of ways, including employing speech pathologists or specialist teachers to target learning areas, he said. In 2016, Braddock Public School will receive an extra $86,737, to $646,289, and Kingswood High School will receive a total of $1.16 million, an increase of $119,483. Glenmore Park Public School was also a huge winner in the funding increase, with an extra $118,867 to total $403,370.

Each day more than 65,000* people leave Penrith City to go to work, sitting on congested roads and crowded trains, taking them away from their homes and families. So many extra jobs could be available in Western Sydney and within an easy commute if the North and South West Growth Centres were connected. Imagine the increased productivity if even before the airport opens in 2025, the Western Sydney Orbital was complete and the South West rail line was extended to meet the Western Line at Penrith and beyond to the North West, creating better access to thousands of new jobs.

Help us make the case for a more productive Penrith. Find out what we’re doing at penrithcity.nsw.gov.au and take our survey at www.surveymonkey.com/r/extendrail *Source ABS

Prepare for a spooky knock at the door Local kids set to dress up and have plenty of fun as part of Halloween celebrations on Saturday Mr Dunn said parents always make sure the children are supervised and safe. “One of the parents from the street will walk around with all the kids. The hardest part is when you don’t know which houses are willing to do it and which aren’t,” he said. In Mr Dunn’s street, there are at least 10 children who trick-or-treat every year with an extra 30 wandering in from surrounding streets. “Halloween allowed for our kids to meet all the other kids in our community they could play with who were their age,” he said. “And as parents, we met other parents and it really just brings the community together.” Across the city, Southlands Shopping Centre will host some Halloween fun on Saturday morning from 9am to 12pm. Jordan Springs will be running a preregistered walking trick-or-treat event, from 5pm to 6.30pm. To join contact lendleasersvp@vanessacampbell.com.au. And Penrith CBD’s Pop Up Park will come alive between 5pm and 10pm for the Halloween Markets, with pumpkin carving, spooky characters, a fog machine and a trick-or-treat with market stall holders.

DALE DRINKWATER

lenmore Park’s streets will be riddled with blood-stained children, ghosts, witches, pumpkins and spider webs this weekend. The suburb is one of many places across town where children and families will come together to celebrate Halloween. Shane Dunn from Pardalote Place, said Halloween is a chance for his two children, Cooper, 10, and Jaxon, 8, to have some fun. “It’s an experience, it’s a chance for them to dress up and get lollies,” he said. “Even though it’s an American tradition, it’s about families hanging out and giving the kids in the street some fun.” Now connected to popular American traditions, the term Halloween stems from ‘All Hallows Eve’, from Celtic nations in Europe as far back as the 1500s. In Poland on All Hallows Eve, believers walk through forests and pray out loud to comfort the souls of the dead, and in Mexico, children make an altar to invite the spirits of children to come back and visit. In Australia, the tradition is less religious and children prefer to knock on neighbours’ doors for lollies.

Opinions are just that Why is it that almost every time anyone expresses an opinion that is opposite to someone within a minority group’s position, the dissenter is attacked and sometimes in a quite nasty manner? Arguments are supposed to be resolved using fact and logic – not intimidation. KEITH EVERETT, VIA EMAIL

Cannabis plan I think it is absolutely wonderful that this decision has finally been made (Doctors wary of cannabis plan, Western Weekender October 23). It will obviously be a lifesaver and a blessing but it must be very strictly regulated and monitored. JANICE MCNEIL, VIA WEBSITE

Worried about noise Absolutely and completely unacceptable (Noise levels not a major concern, Western Weekender October 23). The plan WW19740

has all landing flight paths over the city of Penrith and the lower Blue Mountains. This is absolutely horrific and worse than I could have imagined. There is no way people will be able to sleep in Penrith with a 70+db jet noise every two minutes. MIKE, VIA WEBSITE

Panthers sack Cleary I don’t understand why Gus kept Cleary for so long after the competition if he wasn’t going to retain his services or why he let Ivan Cleary decide who would stay or leave after the competition (Panthers hook new coach, Western Weekender October 23). If I was the Director of Football at Penrith I would want my new coach playing a big part in player retention and recruitment. MATTHEW AUSTIN, VIA FACEBOOK

Sacking didn’t quite add up What irked me was the suddenness of the decision, until Griffin was appointed, then I realised that Gould has been planning this for some time. No one can convince me Gould hadn’t teed everything up beforehand. Not saying he’s not acting in the best interests of the club – but the whole thing smells a bit off, in my opinion. This shouldn’t be how we reward a coach’s commitment. PAT TREWIN, VIA FACEBOOK

Penrith creatives behind new TV show that debuts this weekend

lex Mason, the clean shaven digital marketing guru from Kingswood, will start growing his moustache on Sunday to raise money for Movember. Our local 27-year-old ‘Mo Bro’ travels to the city at 6.30am every day to his job at Web Profits, where he and his team will battle it out to see who can grow the best ‘mo’. Compared to his ‘Mo Money Mo Profits’ Movember team at work, Mr Mason hopes his moustache can man-up and do him proud. “When it comes to growth, I think I’m in the middle,” he said. “There are people who compliment me on the shapeliness of my beard when I have it, and then there are others who I’m outright jealous of their ability to come in to work on a Monday clean shaven and leave Friday covered in a majestic mane.” It’s Mr Mason’s second year participating in Movember, and this year he really hopes to step up in the style stakes. “Last time I grew a handlebar moustache and this time I’m going to try something different. If I really could, I’d want the Victorian style that could twirl at the end,” he said. However, Mr Mason knows that Movember is not all about the shape of the

hotographers everywhere are sure to rejoice at the news that a new TV show will be on screens this weekend, with a Penrith pair behind its creation. ‘Snap Happy: The Photography Show’ will make its debut on ONE HD this Sunday, and features Penrith local Maddison-Clare Sloane as presenter and Emu Heights resident Tim Robinson as the series producer.

“I’m interested in photography myself and then I saw something that no one has really done before – a commercial TV program made about photography, for photographers,” Mr Robinson said. “Smart phones are so prevalent these days and I thought people would want to know how to take better photos using their phones, which was my first thought and then it continued from there.” The team travel to Kakadu in the first episode and look at wildlife and also visit the night markets. The show airs on Sunday at 12pm.

M4 work underway Changed traffic conditions will be in place from this Sunday while night work is carried out on the new M4 Motorway on and off ramps at Claremont Meadows. To ensure the safety of workers the safety barriers on the M4 will be extended to complete landscaping and drainage on the new M4 on and off ramps. While the barriers are being installed one westbound lane on the M4 will be closed. To reduce the impact on road users, work will be carried out at night between 6pm and 7am from this Sunday to November 8. Traffic on Kent Road and Gipps Street may be stopped at times to allow vehicles to safely enter the site compound. Access to properties and the State Emergency Services facility will be maintained at all times while work is underway. More info: 132 701.

We’re on TV! Penrith will feature in a new episode of ‘Sydney Weekender’, thanks to a partnership with the NSW Government to promote the exciting experiences on offer across Sydney. “I am delighted that this upcoming ‘Sydney Weekender’ episode will uncover one of Sydney’s most popular areas for adventure activities, showcasing the exciting Cables Wake Park in Penrith,” said Penrith State MP, Stuart Ayres. Mr Ayres said featuring on shows like ‘Sydney Weekender’ is a fantastic platform to promote tourism. The episode featuring Penrith will air this Sunday, November 1 at 5.30pm on Channel Seven.

hen living nine hours away, it’s not very often you get to travel to the city, let alone work in it. Well that’s exactly what 15 students from West Wyalong High School, myself included, got to experience last week as part of the Nepean Rotary Club Work Experience program. Adapting to the new lifestyle and the busy traffic was the hardest challenge the group of country kids had to face. When you come from walking five minutes to school to travelling 30 minutes in traffic, it’s a big change. Being able to get insights of what the workplace is all about was an eye opening experience. The valuable mentoring by the businesses is something that we will keep close to us forever. It is not every day when doing work experience at the Western Weekender that you get to go to the live press conference of the announcement of the new Penrith Panthers head coach or go to Nepean Hospital to meet Panthers players Jamie Soward and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak. Leaving home and living with a local family was always going to be a challenge but, in the end, we have really appreci-

Bailey Lloyd during his work experience at the Weekender ated the opportunity to meet new people and hear some of their inspiring stories. The opportunity was given to the group of Year 10 students thanks to the close relationship between the Nepean Rotary Club and the West Wyalong Rotary Club. Work experience organiser, Ken Buttrum, said the program, which has been operating for 15 years, was vital for

the development of the “country kids” who come each year. “Well I think a lot of young people will have to leave West Wyalong eventually to go to university or find another job,” he said “I think it’s important that they come up here to Sydney and live here for a while and see what they’re in for.”

Car show aims to raise money

School debating goes high tech

The Henry Sports Club in Werrington County will rev-up for the Hearts Car Show this Saturday, October 31. The free event will have market stalls, food stalls as well as games for kids plus a car competition that will cost just $20 to enter in as many categories as you like. The day is to help raise funds for the Queen of Hearts Community Foundation to provide a social worker to support victims of child sexual abuse, domestic violence and violent crime. Don’t miss this fun day out from 10am to 3pm at the Henry Sports Club located at 144 Henry Lawson Ave, Werrington County.

Students from across the country connect without leaving the classroom DALE DRINKWATER

ollemi College students are debating against schools from Victoria and Queensland, with adjudicators from Western Australia and South Australia – but they’re not even leaving their Werrington classroom. School debating has entered the digital age with technology allowing students from across the country to debate each other. Teams in Year 6 and Year 8 debated twice this year in a pilot program, that aims to test out a range of virtual collaboration opportunities. 11-year-old Year 6 student Ronan Hersey said he normally gets a bit nervous debating, but for him online debating has made it more fun. “It’s pretty fun because we’re not really tense when there’s not people right in front of us, and it makes it a bit easier to speak,” he said. “The best part is when they announce the results and I see where I can improve.” The National Virtual Debating program hasn’t come without its challenges, as 14-year-old Jed Aguilar described. “I feel it’s harder on camera. It’s more daunting, there’s something about how it’s just on a camera and stuff,” he said.

Award for Centre The Western Sydney Business Centre has won the Outstanding Data Client Integrity Award 2014-15 at the Small Biz Connect Conference held in Sydney. The Small Biz Connect conference and Awards Ceremony brings together 70 business advisers from across the state to collaborate and provide support to the 680,000 businesses in NSW. “This is a great achievement for John Todd and his team at the Western Sydney Business Centre and a great representation of the opportunities and support available for business in Penrith,” State Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said. For more information about Western Sydney Business Centre, call 4721 5011.

There’s all these things running through your mind when you still have to think about what you’re saying.” However, 13-year-old Simon Hoffmann, said the challenges make it more exciting, and using the camera feels important. “In our classroom debates there’s usually only five or 10 people watching.

With multiple screens it feel like there’s more people watching and more pressure,” he said. Wollemi College was invited to be a part of the Government’s National Presentation Network after installing their own fibre-optic cables for Internet. Director of Students, Brett Wright said students have learnt a lot through the debating program.

mu Plains volunteer Steven Green said it was an amazing feeling to be recognised for his effort and time after he clocked up 12 years of service with St John Ambulance NSW. Mr Green along with Rhonda Alexander of Ropes Crossing and Vincent Oritz of Cranebrook were all recognised for their service with St John (NSW) when they were each awarded an esteemed Service Medal of the Order. The annual awards ceremony was held at Sydney University and recognised the efforts of 62 volunteers. The Service Medals are awarded to volunteers after 12 years of service and for every five years after that. “It’s been a great experience volunteering for St John Ambulance and it’s something that’s given me a lot,” Mr Green said. “I feel I’m giving back to the organisation that gave so much to me when I was young – I’m paying it forward so to speak.” St John (NSW) promotes the saving of lives through first aid with the aim of having at least one person educated, equipped and prepared to provide first aid in every home, workplace and public gathering.

Mr Shreeve said the training can put people at the top of the list when applying for casual or part time jobs, such as a barista, bartender or as event crew. “These courses are ideal for school leavers, university students and others looking to pick up work over summer,” he said. The opportunity was made available through the NSW Government’s Smart and Skilled Targeted Priorities Prevocational and Part Qualifications Program. They care because they’ve been there The founders of Debt Cutter started out in a similar way to every client they’ve ever supported over the last 10 years. Their background in Debt Management emerged from beginnings that look more like humiliation, but on reflection, humbling, as they turned pain into the ability to help thousands. Geoff Chester (pictured) and wife Mal, at 50, not only lost their family business, they lost everything they worked their whole lives for to make sure their staff did not lose out. The stress of everything crumbling contributed to Geoff almost losing his life, but thanks to modern medicine he survived a serious heart attack. Getting back on the horse wasn’t easy, the emotional pain of leaving the past behind was enormous. During the humbling experience of being on Centrelink after a lifetime of professional employment, Geoff happened upon a job advert seeking a Debt Agreement consultant and found himself saying: “I know a bit about debt”. Just like every story of trial and

tribulations their journey was filled with long nights of hard work making ends meet, while helping thousands overcome their debt struggles. But Geoff and Mal’s unending positive attitude means they never gave up. Now Debt Cutter is supporting many employees, some who have also experienced the trauma of crippling debt. That’s where the motto comes from: “We care, because we’ve been there”. Not another company looking for an avenue to make a buck, but one that truly believes everyone deserves a light at the end of the tunnel. Geoff and Mal have brought their own experiences to the table and developed a business that takes great care with their clients. Why? Because they know how it feels. And the rest is not just history. It’s the present and it will be long into the future that Debt Cutter will continue to pour their caring attitude, support and success mindsets into their clients.

If you’re drowning in debt there is a way out. Meet Johnny Debt. Like a lot of Australians, Johnny’s debts were getting out of control. Overdue notices kept piling up and the harassing phone calls never stopped. It can happen so easily. You lose your job ... there’s a baby on the way ... an illness in the family ... suddenly your credit cards are maxed and loan payments start mounting up. Johnny decided to do something about it, and so can you.

One or two special guests will appear on the show each week to talk about their specific interest, from nutrition to relationships and anything in between. You can find the link at www.womenwithaltitude.com.au.

BUSINESS H How to get the right response on social media re

Mental health should be treated seriously at work

I

f you are on social media you will probably agree that there is a lot of ‘noise’ on there. There are so many companies, organisations, media outlets and other parties vying for your attention. For business owners, the million dollar question is ‘how do I break through all the noise to reach my customers?’. There are two examples I have come across recently that may provide some answers. In between reporting incidences and providing relevant community service announcements, the Queensland Police Force interject with timely humorous posts. They joined in the social media excitement of Back to the Future Day. Their post, “Officers from the Mount Isa Hoverboard Unit are investigating a crash involving a silver vehicle travelling at 88mph was accompanied by a photo of police officers apparently riding hoverboards. Within two hours, the post had nearly 25,000 likes and 1600 comments! What they have very successfully done

over time is improve the perception of the Queensland Police Force with the general public by showing a sense of humour and a ‘human face’. The other surprising social media success story is Premier Mike Baird. Mike posts on a variety of topics, sometimes purely political (as would be expected), and interjects these with stories about (and sometimes photos of) his family, jokes about current events (he also posted about Back to the Future Day!) and videos documenting his days. He also has a knack for eloquently writing about tragic events, sharing his thoughts and feelings in the process. Mr Baird’s friendly, personable and down to earth posts have raised his profile enormously and promoted quite a different image of a politician than what we are generally accustomed to in Australia. Unlike the pages of most politicians, the comments from likers are overwhelmingly positive. The lesson for the rest of us? Be culturally relevant, be down to earth, share something of yourself and don’t take yourself too seriously all the time!

R

unning your own business can be hugely rewarding, but for many small business owners having sole responsibility for the company’s success or failure, cash flow and people management can take its toll. I know full well that business owners do put their business first, health second. Some are in tears on their way to work only to walk in, smile, and pretend everything is OK. Many business owners also lose their social life because of the workload. Mental health costs Australian businesses an estimated $10.9 billion annually. According to research by Beyond Blue, one in five Australian workers has taken time off work in the past year due to feeling mentally unwell. But the cost isn’t just an economic one. Managing people or dealing with the overarching stress of cash flow problems can be the catalyst for mental health issues and exacerbate any underlying conditions. This is the unpleasant side to owning a business, the side that needs to be talked about. So what can you do? • Increase awareness of mental health

•

•

•

conditions. Make information about mental health conditions available in the workplace. Increase awareness of people’s responsibilities relating to mental health. Provide staff with information about looking after their own mental health and their legal responsibilities relating to mental health. Reduce Stigma. Speak openly about mental health conditions in the workplace and encourage others to do the same. Monitor and manage workloads. Encourage your people to speak up at an early stage and seek guidance. Build the skills and confidence to approach someone who may be experiencing difficulties. Check how to have a conversation with a staff member who you may be concerned about and encourage staff to look out for each other. Encourage staff with mental health conditions to seek treatment and support early. Also support staff with mental health conditions to stay at or return to work.

HISTORY

Turning back Time

Bowling was big news

One year ago...

T

2 1

The October 31, 2014 edition of The Western Weekender spoke of one of the biggest sporting stories of the year – the Western Sydney Wanderers on the verge of becoming the champions of Asia. The Weekender declared the Wanderers “the miracle men” as they prepared to take on Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia. All the Wanderers needed to do was win or draw the game that weekend to become winners of the Asian Champions League, and a 0-all draw ensured that the dream came true – setting off wild celebrations in the early hours of Sunday morning in Parramatta. The Weekender also featured the fantastic news that the Build for a Cure house had sold for $783,000. The brainchild of PRDnationwide Penrith, the house gained national media attention. In other news, Penrith City Council approved a development application to build a prayer hall in Kemps Creek, creating controversy. And we also reported on a major truck crash on The Northern Road at Penrith. Thankfully nobody was injured when the truck rolled and came to rest in a front yard, just metres from where a female resident was inside.

Shoe store was a St Marys favourite Long-time St Marys residents may remember Fays Shoes, a famous shoe store located on the eastern side of Queen Street between Chapel and Phillip Street. This photograph was taken in the early 1970s. Fays Shoes was the ultimate destination for St Marys residents after a new pair of shoes for everyday wear, or a special occasion. The shop is no longer open.

en pin bowling has a huge history in Penrith, but those who enjoy the ultra modern facilities on Batt Street in Jamisontown these days probably wouldn’t understand the excitement that surrounded the opening of the city’s first bowling centre back in 1963. “City gets a touch of glamour” screamed the headline in the local paper, as the 18-lane bowling centre on the corner of High and Station Streets prepared for its opening. Mayor of Penrith, William Chapman, had the honour of taking the very first bowl in Penrith – and he did it using a special golden bowl reserved for such occasions. The Penrith Bowl opened on Saturday, May 18, 1963 with a special VIP opening night the previous evening. The centre was in good hands, with the experienced Bill Hewitt given the role of manager. “In only four weeks in Penrith, I have found the people most sociable,” Mr Hewitt said in the lead-up to the grand opening. The new centre promised the very best in bowling equipment, plus a fine restaurant as well as free parking and free training in ten pin bowling for those who needed a bit of a helping hand.

The race that stops the nation is on again!

Local residents get into the Melbourne Cup day spirit at Panthers last year

hey say it’s the race that stops the nation and there’s no doubt that everyone from passionate racegoers to once-a-year punters will be getting into the Melbourne Cup day spirit this Tuesday. Venues across Penrith are set to be filled to capacity with a range of functions being held to celebrate the big day. Betting agencies are also preparing for the year’s busiest day, with TAB agencies across the region set to open early to ensure those wishing to have a flutter can do so with plenty of time to spare. Outside of the traditional TAB outlets, online bookmakers are set to have their biggest year yet when it comes to the Melbourne Cup. The VRC officially launched the 2015 Melbourne Cup Carnival on Monday with a star-studded event at Flemington. Myer Fashions on the Field Ambassador Georgia Connolly made a dramatic horseback entrance to the Flemington Pre-Parade Ring alongside her predecessors Rebeccah Panozza, Rebecca Stoneman and Alison Saville. The Melbourne Cup has come a long way since Archer won the first two races in 1861 and 1862, but no matter what has changed in terms of generations, eras or advancements, the race has still managed to attract the eyes of most of the nation on the first Tuesday in November. Won by Protectionist last year, ridden by Ryan Moore, the Melbourne Cup is traditionally a wide open betting affair with plenty of horses given a chance. The big race jumps at 3pm on Tuesday. See the next page for our Cup sweep.

PENRITH’S BIGGEST AND BEST LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE

Meet a man of many talents

W KATE REID

hile most people know Arj Barker as the Americ a n / honorary Australian comedian, there’s another passion in his life besides stand up. “The thing I probably derive the most pleasure from is making music, I mean aside from stand up,” he said. “I love being a stand up but I’m living that dream already. I’d like to get more involved with music.” Arj has already dipped his toe in the music pool with his 2009 track ‘Sickest Buddhist’ which he describes as “spiritual materialism satire”. The stand-up comedian and actor is also well known for his role as Dave in the hit TV comedy series ‘Flight of the Conchords’, where he appeared on tracks including ‘Sugar Lumps’ and ‘Too Many Dicks on the Dancefloor’. “Anything dick and balls I was the go-to guy,” Arj said. It’s this ‘Flight of the Conchords’ song style, which blends quality and humour, that Arj most admires. “To me, their music is so listenable, you could listen to it just musically speaking,” he said. “In fact some of those songs are down right beautiful but also quite funny. They don’t sacrifice listen-ability for comedy.” Along with working on his music, and developing a new TV show, Arj is currently on a national tour that will see him perform at the Evan Theatre in

Penrith on Saturday, November 14. This new show, ‘Get In My Head’, has had audiences around the country in stitches. “The only complaints I get from this show is that their cheeks hurt from the workout they’re getting, and I mean the cheeks on their face,” Arj said. While his style of comedy involves a little of everything, Arj admits that toilet humour does seem to creep its way in there, even if it is not always intentional. “I have that really immature sort of streak in me, but I don’t say ‘oh today I’m going to write a joke about diarrhoea’,” he said. No matter how old we get this juvenile style of humour never seems to go out of style, and Arj believes it’s all down to universality. “They’re funny because they’re slightly unpleasant but they apply to everyone on Earth,” he said. “A lot of comedy comes from tragedy. Every time you fart that’s a tiny little tragedy isn’t it?” This theme has extended to the animated series about Arj and his cat Poopy, aptly titled ‘Arj and Poopy’, which the comedian developed with animator Bernard Derriman. “The very first episode he just took the audio off of a clip that was online and animated it,” Arj said. “So before we’d even met he’d made an episode.” While there’s not much Arj isn’t willing to joke about, surprisingly he does tend to stay away from the obvious comedic

targets within the political arena. “Sadly with the quality of politicians being produced these days you almost don’t need to make fun of them because they make fun of themselves for you,” he said. “It would almost be redundant to make Abbott jokes or George W. Bush

jokes because the situations that they produced themselves almost don’t need any additional comedy.” ‘Arj Barker – Get In My Head’ will be on at the Evan Theatre on Saturday, November 14 at 8pm. Tickets are $46.60. For more information or to purchase tickets call 4720 5555.

Great cause and superb music at November concert KATE REID

L

ooking for something to do this Halloween weekend? Then why not head down to the Police Citizens Boys Club to check out The Acting Factory’s production of the Robert Louis Stevenson classic ‘Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’. The story follows Dr Jekyll who is dealing with what is commonly known as a split personality, which manifests itself in the form of the evil Mr Hyde. The Acting Factory’s Director Mitch Rist chose to make this adaptation as close as possible to the original. “We decided not to re-contextualise the story as the atmosphere of the cold London streets adds a lot to it,” he said.

40

“I’ve attempted to stay faithful to the novel while adding our own flavour to the story, including the part of Mr Hyde being played by Georgina Neville as a male role.” Guests who dress in either Halloween or period costume will be offered a $2 discount, and $2 from every ticket sold will be donated to mental health research at Western Sydney University’s School of Medicine. Go along and have a frightfully good time! ‘Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ will be on until Sunday, November 1 at the Police Citizens Boys Club in Penrith. Performance times are Friday and Saturday evenings at 8pm and Sundays at 3pm. Tickets are $15-$25 and are available at the door or at trybooking.com/129333.

I

f you love the idea of enjoying original live music while raising money for a great cause, then head along to the Concert for Cambodia this November. David and Joelle Wrotniak will be performing an evening of original acoustic songs and testimonies in a relaxed cafe setting. Money raised from the concert will go towards a missions project run by ImagineNations Church to help build much needed wells for villages in Cambodia. Joelle explained that the couple wanted to find a way to help out a worthy cause. “We are parents of three young boys and we wanted an opportunity to be able to get behind this project in a way that we couldn’t do on our own in our normal daily life and budget,” she said.

The Concert for Cambodia will be held on Saturday, November 14 at 6pm at ImagineNations Church in Orchard Hills. Tickets are $15 per person and kids can enter for free. For ticket purchases or information on sponsoring this special event, contact David and Joelle on 0404 981 772 or email jwrotniak@ gmail.com.

R

oll up, roll up! Prepare to be amazed by death defying stunts when the Great Euro Circus comes to Penrith this November. Europe’s most extreme touring circus is heading to the Penrith Paceway from Wednesday, November 4 to Sunday, November 15. But this isn’t any old circus. Audiences will be mesmerised as Australia’s only touring human cannonball flies high over their heads. There’s also Felix the Strongman, who will drag a 2.5 tonne ute by his teeth before being run over by the same vehicle, and the Globe of Death where motorbike riders will spin at high speeds around Latin dancer, Renata. Along with these amazing acts of courage and skill, the show will also feature traditional acrobatics, hilarious vaudevillian comedy and a line-up of stunning horses. Featuring the talents of fifth, sixth and even 10th generation circus performers, this show is definitely one not to be missed! For more information visit their website at www. greateurocircus.com or check them out when they arrive at the Paceway next month. The Weekender has five family passes (two adults and two children) to the Great Euro Circus to give away. Ê ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’ winner and former English cricketer Andrew Flintoff will join Channel Ten’s commentary team for the upcoming Big Bash League. From December 18, Flintoff will commentate alongside other cricket legends including Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Damien Fleming and Mark Waugh. Ê Channel Seven’s new drama ‘800 Words’ starring

Erik Thompson has been renewed for a second season. Can’t say I’ve watched this one myself but it does enjoy good ratings of a million viewers each week.

Ê Long-running science stunt series ‘Mythbusters’ will end next year with its 14th series. The show first aired in 2003 and will finish up after 248 episodes and 2950 experiments. Ê Poor form by gossip website The Daily Mail for revealing the winner of ‘The Bachelorette’ just hours before it went to air last Thursday. I didn’t watch the show but I feel very sorry for the roughly one million people that did. This disappointing act doesn’t really surprise me considering the trashy website in question is owned by Channel Nine. Ê Still on ‘The Bachelor’ and its spin-off ‘The Bachelorette’, Channel Ten is set to add ‘After the Rose’ specials next year. Due to the huge interest in both shows, Ten is also rumoured to be considering spin-offs ‘Bachelor Pad’ and ‘Bachelor in Paradise’. Ê SBS will air new observational series ‘Kebab Kings’ in late November. This series is set to be a great laugh!

REVIEW W EI V E R MUSIC

BOOK World War One: A History in 100 Stories

Bruce Scates, Rebecca Wheatley & Laura James // JADE ALIPRANDI World War One: A History in 100 Stories draws on not only the men and women who lost their lives in battle, but also those who returned home after the war. The book offers a personal tone, unseen in other books, with stories of a suffering and broken generation. Being an avid reader of war books, I haven’t read one quite like this where you are so drawn into each story. Even though each story is only a few pages long, there is a depth that hasn’t really been explored before, especially for the lesser known soldiers of the World War. Each story has its own title to match the tale of what happened to that individual during a trying time. Just about every type of person

irreparably damaged by war has had their story told in this book. Throughout the book, you explore all kinds of stories from hope to sadness as well as stories of courage. For the families of the soldiers in this book, the war didn’t end in 1918 as well as for those who returned home. Some stories in this book do not have the end date that the others do as their stories are explained far beyond 1918. Letters, repatriation files and newspaper reports among other items have been used by the authors to tell the stories of the courageous men and women who fought in one way or another in World War I.

Carrie Underwood Storyteller // KATE REID

‘American Idol’ season four winner and country music superstar Carrie Underwood is back with her fifth album ‘Storyteller’. The album contains a nice mix of tracks, from heartwarming ballads like ‘The Girl You Think I Am’ to pure country tracks like ‘Church Bells’, but it’s the big ballsy anthems where Carrie really comes into her element. There’s no question that her strong vocal skills are the perfect fit for empowered tracks like ‘Renegade Runaway’ where Carrie sings her heart out about a devil in a satin dress. While there are a couple of mediocre songs, like the lyrically questionable ‘Smoke Break’, overall this is another lovely album from the talented singer/ songwriter. With Taylor Swift now moving into the pure pop arena, there’s no question that Carrie has every opportunity to dominate the country pop genre.

‘Hot Pursuit’ follows Rose Cooper (Reese Witherspoon), a by-the-book police officer who has grown up around her high achieving police officer father. After a previous incident in the field, Cooper is stationed at the evidence desk and is made fun of by other officers. Only brought back into the field to be

a female escort for a woman testifying in another matter, Cooper’s first day outside the station walls turns to disaster when she ends up on the run with Daniella Riva (Sofia Vergara), a widow of a drug lord. With a fast moving storyline, ‘Hot Pursuit’ dives head first into on-the-run action with comedic one liners thrown in. Sofia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon work well together and for this movie, were the right fit. Witherspoon did well in her role, using

Ph:

a fake accent that had her portraying a whole new character compared to what she has done previously. Vergara gave the film its comedy aspect with some jokes that made you laugh out loud, and others that made you smile or smirk. A lighthearted comedy at best, ‘Hot Pursuit’ has its moments where it is quite funny but overall it didn’t make me laugh as much as I was expecting it to.

WINE LIST

DAVID ELLIS

Soba Noodle Salad with Salmon and Asparagus

Popularity plus Jay

R

egular readers will know we’ve an aversion to reviewing wines in this column on the basis of some gong they’ve won at some show. Our belief being that if we give one maker a plug for their success, we need to give every medal-winner a plug… and with that many medals flying around the place we’d need the whole of a publication like this just to list them. But that doesn’t stop us giving mention to recognition achieved by a wine from small family concern, Logan Wines in the Central Ranges of NSW. Because their Weemala Pinot Gris off the family’s cold climate Orange vineyards is interesting in that it is now the consistently most-popular wine at their Mudgee cellar door. And the just-released 2015 is probably good proof why, with delicate yet discernible bright pear, orange rind and nutty flavours, a crunchy finish and lovely bouquet. And at $19.95 it’s a wine you’ll find equally enjoyable with anything from sashimi to antipasto. One to note: Tasmania’s Heemskerk has vineyards in some of the most southerly and therefore coolest grape-growing regions in Australia, places that allow for slow and gentle ripening of fruit and the subsequent preservation of important natural acid. Named after the flagship of Dutch explorer and merchant Abel Tasman, Heemskerk was founded in 1975, had a colourful history with a half-dozen owners and mixed fortunes over the years, and is now part of Treasury Wine Estates. And a Heemskerk Coal River Valley Chardonnay Pinot Noir 2010 that’s just been released is a little ripper of a bubbly we think you’ll find a cracker for party-room celebrating.

Mamre House Sunday, October 25

Fun in the name of a good cause Last Sunday the beautiful grounds of Mamre House once again played host to the annual Mamre House Festival. This year’s festival included a free art exhibition titled ‘Sharing the Seeds’, which celebrated the community gardening programs run at the homestead. There was plenty of entertainment for young and old, including face painting, teacup rides and a jumping castle, plus music and delicious food including sausage sandwiches and bacon and egg rolls. As well as being a fun day out for the whole family, the annual Mamre House Festival helped raise funds for Mamre House, which provides community support through disability and refugee programs. LEGAL MATTERS

governed by legislation. In the context of privately owned car parks however, these penalties are usually an issue of Contract Law whereby the entity that owns the car park takes action against you for breaching the contract you entered into when you entered the car park. If you want to fight a parking fine issued to you by a local Council or Govern-

ment you should consider the following: • Whether you have a legitimate reason for having breached the rules (for example, you were suffering ill health). • Whether or not a mistake has been made (for example if you have evidence you did not breach the rules). • Whether or not the signs indicating the parking rules are easily seen and accessible. Fighting a penalty imposed by the owner of a privately owned car park can be a little more tricky. When you enter a private car park the signs that you read usually indicate to you that you are entering into a contract with the owner to use the car park in accordance with the terms set out in those signs. If you cannot negotiate your way out of such a fine/penalty you will most likely need to commence court proceedings for breach of contract as opposed to a simple application to the Council for review. If you find yourself in a parking dispute, consider contacting your local council to see what can be done or seeking advice from a suitably qualified contract lawyer.

One of the most topical issues within the Penrith CBD and in fact across all major cities in NSW is that of parking fines and/or penalties for not complying with the rules of privately owned car parks. Typically there are two types of car parks. The first are car parks owned by local council which are open to the public. The second type of car park are those which are privately owned. A fine issued by a local Council is a penalty for not complying with a Council regulation and is usually

PET HEALTH

Rabbit calicivirus is a haemorrhagic disease which is highly infectious and can be fatal to both wild and domestic bunnies. Australian authorities have approved the virus for the use to control the ‘wild’ rabbit population and it is very common all over NSW. Unfortunately, pet rabbits can also be infected and suffer from this horrible disease.

this disease? Since the virus can invade many different organs, the symptoms can vary between different rabbits. Signs include loss of appetite, lethargy, fever, shaking or spontaneous bleeding from the nose, mouth or bum. Sadly, there is no cure for calicivirus and prevention is the best way to protect your bunny.

How is calicivirus spread? The virus is present in saliva, nasal secretions, urine and faeces of infected rabbits. It can spread either

How can I protect my pet bunny? The best way to protect your rabbit is through regular vaccinations. All rabbits should be vaccinated yearly to protect against calicivirus. It is also important to try and avoid any contact with wild rabbits. Rabbits are also best housed in insect proof facilities as insects can carry several diseases to rabbits.

It is also a very resistant virus and can live for extended periods of time in the environment. What are the symptoms of

Buying your own home is one of the great Australian dreams – all that serenity! Researching the right home loan, however, is not. It’s no surprise then that you may be tempted to simply look for the loan with the best rate and sign on the dotted line when making the exciting leap into the property market. However, deciding on the most suitable home loan is just as important as choosing the right house. The home you purchase needs to tick all the boxes such as having enough bedrooms and being in a

good location. Likewise, the mortgage you take out should be similarly tailored to your situation. Below are a few questions to consider before choosing your new home loan. What type of buyer are you? Whether you’re a property market first-timer or a seasoned house-hunting veteran, understanding your position as a buyer is key to choosing

the best home loan for you. The type of buyer you are and your position in the property market can influence your home loan needs, particularly when considering the various grants and support that may be available to FHBs. Is the loan fixed or variable? Home loan lenders generally offer several different options in regards to your interest – fixed, variable or split. A variable rate will fluctuate, usually in conjunction with the official cash rate, while a fixed loan ensures your interest remains unchanged for some time. If you’re still sitting on a white-picket fence, a split rate home loan gives you the best of both worlds, with part of your loan fixed, and part variable. What are your repayment options? If you prefer to budget in accordance to your fortnightly pay cheque, yet your bank insists you make monthly loan repayments, you could find yourself faced with a headache-inducing financial mess. When choosing the right home loan, check your lender’s repayment options. A home loan with a range of possible repayment timelines means you can easily stay on top of your payments, even if your financial circumstances change.

should be tolerated in our society. Former Australian swimming coach Laurie Lawrence shares this vision, and is now a well respected water safety ambassador since launching his ‘Kids Alive – Do the Five’ community service program in 1988. The program aims to educate the public on five important steps to reduce

the risk of childhood drowning – but can you name the five, and are you practicing them? They are: 1. Fence the pool 2. Shut the gate 3. Teach your kids to swim – it’s great 4. Supervise – watch your mate, and 5. Learn how to resuscitate In 2009, Kids Alive launched the ‘Living with Water’ DVD for new parents. Six years on, this initiative has been updated to a two pack DVD which includes important water safety information for parents and water safety education songs and animations specifically designed for kids. RELIGION

October 21, 2015 has come and gone. Movie fans will know this date as ‘Back to the Future Day’. This was the day when Doc Brown and Marty McFly travelled to the future from 1985 in the marvellous series of movies that have been shown time and time again on our TV screens. The big talking point from the movie was what did the movie makers get right with their predictions about the future? In the movie we saw flying cars powered by garbage, shoes tie themselves, rehydrating pizza, video phone calls, and of course the

the book of Ephesians we read how “God has made known to us the mystery of his plan... which God will complete when the time is right... to bring all creation together, everything in heaven and on Earth, with Christ as head.” The mystery about the future has been made known! God’s plan is to bring everything together under the one head, the rule of Jesus Christ! In fact, God has started this amazing event now! Right now God is calling on all people to the make the decision to belong to Jesus! What does the future hold for you? It does not have to be a mystery. You can decide now to have your future secure by living under the rule of Jesus!

We live in a lucky country, where summer is long and provides many opportunities to have fun in and around the water. However, despite the water safety campaigns and initiatives in existence, drowning remains the single greatest cause of accidental death of children under five in Australia, with one child drowning each week on average. I believe that we can and must work together as a community to implement strategies to see the drowning statistics reduced to zero, and that nothing above this

Will it be worse? For many people, the future is a mystery, full of uncertainty. Yet, the Bible tells us that the mystery about the future has been revealed. In

Kate

Reid NUTRITION

To calorie count or not to calorie count? That is often the question when it comes to making changes to your diet. While short term calorie counting, say a three day sample, can be a good way to get an idea of how much energy you’re consuming on average, long term calorie counting has its pitfalls. Forcing yourself to count every calorie that passes through your lips requires a lot of effort and can lead to obsessive or restrictive eating habits and feelings of guilt.

Is calorie counting the answer? Kate Reid is a journalist and university qualified Nutritionist with a Bachelor of Science (Nutrition) degree from the University of Wollongong. kate.reid@ westernweekender. com.au @kate_reid6

The other issue with calorie counting is that it doesn’t take into account the nutrient content of what you’re consuming. Eating 1500 calories worth of pizza is not going to be as good for your health as 1500 calories worth of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean meat and dairy. So if you’re not calorie counting what should you do instead? Well my advice

would be to keep track of your food intake by being organised where possible and being mindful about what you’re eating. Instead of counting calories, try planning out your meals each day, or every few days, so you have a general idea of what you’re consuming. When you do eat, do it mindfully. Often we’re distracted when we’re eating which makes it easier to over consume. I’m sure all of us have had that experience where you sit down in front of the TV with a bag of chips and before you know it the whole bag is gone! Focus on enjoying every mouthful and remember it takes time for the body to recognise it’s full, so have a small serve, then give yourself a break and if you’re still hungry you can go back for more. Using your body as a gauge for how much food you need will help to prevent over consumption. But most of all it’s important to remember that each day will be different, so don’t beat yourself up if you have a bit of a splurge. The best way to good health is to focus on getting as many nutritious foods into your diet as possible, and enjoy the less nutritious foods in moderation.

I read a study recently that showed fitness is a far better indicator of overall health and longevity than even body mass index (BMI). What this means is that even if you’re overweight or obese, exercise will still provide you with measurable benefits. It will also most likely help you with weight loss as well. Among the many benefits, exercise improves the circulation of immune cells in your blood. The job of these cells is to neutralise pathogens throughout your body. The better these cells circulate, the more efficient your

David

Stein HEALTH

Why you need to start your exercise plan

immune system is at locating and defending against viruses and diseases trying to attack your body. Your immune system is your first line of defence against everything from minor illnesses like a cold or the flu right up through devastating, life-threatening diseases like cancer. Further, when researchers measured the biochemical

changes that occur during exercise, they found alterations in more than 20 different metabolites. Some of these compounds help you burn calories and fat while others help stabilise your blood sugar. So lace up a pair of running shoes or hit the gym. Even a brisk walk a few times a week is better than nothing, particularly if you are new to exercise or very out of shape. However, it is not enough to do all the time as it alone really offers only a few of the benefits described above. To achieve the full range of benefits of exercise you need to exercise more intensely so you will want to tailor your fitness plan to include a variety of more challenging techniques. You should be getting in not only strength training and functional real life movements, but also core-building activities, stretching and more. For instance balance work can make you a lot more agile and help reaction time if you had a fall. But don’t make the mistake of wasting your time logging in steady, hour-long cardio sessions on the treadmill as your primary form of exercise. The best benefits come from mixing things up with your exercise.

exus will launch its new GS F high performance V8 sedan in Australia in February 2016. GS F, based on the acclaimed GS sports sedan, is powered by a 351kW 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated V8 and features dynamic handling developed on the most demanding race circuits, including the legendary Nürburgring in Germany. Its elegant yet aggressive styling direction characterises the essence of Lexus’ performance-oriented F brand, highlighted by an aggressive-looking front fascia with race-inspired functional air inlets and outlets, low-slung wide stance, large brake callipers, carbon fibre rear spoiler and quad exhaust rear diffuser. GS F offers enthusiasts the best of both worlds, delivering spirited performance on challenging switchbacks while being able to reach destinations in unprecedented style and comfort. It seats five comfortably in a luxuriouslyappointed cabin filled with high-tech amenities and advanced safety technologies, including the Lexus Safety System+. Lexus Australia Chief Sean Hanley said GS F represented an ideal addition to the brand’s expanding line-up of F models. “GS F will be the second F model to launch in 12 months, which firmly indicates Lexus’ intention to broaden its high performance vehicle portfolio,” he said.

Youngster hopes to make it big p.67 NATHAN TAYLOR

io-bound triathlete Aaron Royle could very well have the famous Nepean Triathlon named after him in future years after he won his third straight title last Sunday. Held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, the 25-year-old dominated the famous local event from start to finish with a winning time of 1:28:55. Speaking with the Weekender after the race, the Newcastle-born triathlete said this year’s victory was by far his finest. “The race was good, it was probably one of my better ones out of the three,” he said. “Just to go from start to finish by yourself makes it that bit more rewarding, and to do it in such a dominant fashion was nice as well.” Royle believes the reason he is so good at Australia’s oldest triathlon is because the race suits him so well. “It certainly plays to my strengths and I just seem to have a good run every time I’m there,” he said. “The Nepean Triathlon is normally late in our season and I’ve been able to hold good form at the right time.” Meanwhile, the female winner of this year’s Nepean Triathlon was experienced triathlete and 2008 Olympic bronze medallist Emma Moffatt. The 31-year-old took out her second Nepean Triathlon in three years with a winning time of 1:35:30. Moffatt said it was great to return to the race after having to withdraw last year with a torn calf. “It had been a couple of years since I last raced there but I felt pretty good this year and I’m very happy to come away with the win,” she said. “It was a little bit on the crisp side to start the day but warmed up nicely by the run leg… it was almost perfect conditions.” 1400 competitors entered this year’s 34th Nepean Triathlon, which held a total prize pool of $76,500 – the richest in Australia. The prize money attracts some of the sport’s top competitors. Both Royle and Moffatt hope to return next year to defend their titles.

The radio legend, who coached the Wallabies in the mid-80s, will also be bringing with him some very wellknown and respected rugby union friends for a night not to be missed. ‘A Night with Alan Jones and Friends’ will be held on Saturday, November 7 from 6.30pm to 11pm at the Penrith Paceway. Penrith Emus President, Jim Hook, said the club was looking forward to next season and is currently in the middle of re-building so that everyone in western Sydney could be proud of it. “What we need is community support,” he said. “We need local businesses and residents to get behind us and show the other rugby dominated areas of Sydney that we are here – and we are here to stay. “What better way to start our 2016 campaign than with a high-calibre night like this.” Securing Jones for the event is a major coup. His rugby knowledge and background is superb, but these days he is

Ironman returns to Penrith in November

Champion in the making

Story continued from » p. 72 Athlete and mother Megan Nikakis is amongst the competitors fundraising for Redkite. She was inspired to raise funds while competing due to her personal experiences with cancer. “Over my time, just like all my family, friends and training colleagues, I have been affected by the dreaded ‘C’ word, cancer. I have lost family members and friends but have also had family members win the hard fought battle,” she said. “Having two beautiful girls gets me thinking about the children and young people out there who have to deal with caner. That absolutely breaks my heart, so in a hope to help in some way, I have decided to raise money for Redkite.” Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney takes place on Sunday, November 29 from 6am. eth Burchell is only nine-years-old but he’s already proving a career in motocross could be well within his sights. The Year 4 student at Werrington County Public School recently returned from Bunbury in Western Australia where he competed in two events at the 2015 Australian Junior Motocross Championships. It was the second straight year the Cranebrook youngster competed at the prestigious national competition, which took place over five days from late September to early October. After training hard for the event all year, Seth finished an outstanding second in the 65cc class and third in the 50cc class. However, his result in the 50cc class could have been a whole lot different had the unthinkable not have happened in the final race. “Seth dominated the competition all week then on the very last corner of the very last race his bike stopped due to an electrical fault which caused it to overheat,” Seth’s dad Jamie recalled. “Seth then had to push his bike over the

he was five-years-old and can sometimes reach speeds of 70km/h on the long, dirt covered straights. “It doesn’t feel like I’m going that fast, I want to go faster,” Seth bravely said. “I sometimes get scared going over the jumps… I’ve had a few big crashes, but thankfully no broken bones.”

The Penrith Panthers announced this week that VIA Network has signed on as the club’s official training partner until the end of the 2018 NRL season. The logo of VIA Careers, the employment and recruitment arm of VIA Network, will appear on the lower back of all Panthers jerseys for the next three seasons.

Powerlifting

Power on show in Penrith As tough as it gets: Powerlifting event to attract plenty of competitors BAILEY LLOYD

5 of the best powerlifters in the nation will travel to Penrith next week to compete in one of Australia’s most well known powerlifting events, the 2015 Matti Tikka Opal Challenge. It’s the first time Penrith will host the event, with the invitation-only tournament expected to see competitors travelling from all over the country, including Queensland, Victoria and Canberra, to compete. Penrith local Daniel Curry will be competing in this year’s Matti Tikka, and the recent Australian deadlift record holder will be looking to regain his title. “Daniel Curry, who had the Australian deadlift record before it was recently broken, will be attempting to go for the total record which is 861kg,” coach and Matti Tikka organiser, Ray Owen said. “It’s a combination of a squat, benchpress and deadlift.” The women’s category will be very competitive with Kellie Clarke and Elizabeth Craven, both ranked one and two in Australia, amongst the competitors at the event.

The event is set to remain in Penrith for many years to come, which will allow locals to witness several of Australia’s best lifters in action. Mr Owen hopes many locals attend.

“It’s a great showcase for Penrith to be able to host some of the best lifters in Australia,” Mr Owen said. The Challenge will be held at 9am on Saturday, November 7 at Lower Blue Mountains Crossfit, located at 8/10 Production Place, Jamisontown. Entry is free.

Young fast bowler Belinda Vakarewa is the newest member of the Thunder Nation after signing on with the Sydney Thunder for WBBL01. A member of the NSW Breakers Academy, Vakarewa is one of the most promising young bowlers in the state, and adds more depth to the Thunder’s bowling stocks. The young quick has spent time plying her trade through NSW’s pathway, representing her state in the U/15’s and U/18’s and was part of the NSW Metropolitan team that won the 2014/15 U/18 National Championships. Vakarewa also gained international experience earlier in 2015, travelling to Sri Lanka as part of the NSW Development Squad. The Thunder’s newest signing is excited about the opportunity. “The WBBL is a really big step for women’s cricket,” said Vakarewa. “I’m just going to be taking in as much as possible from all of the experienced players around me like Alex Blackwell, Rene Farrell and Erin Osborne.” The WBBL is the next step in a promising career that only started during Vakarewa’s high school years. “I got a letter from school saying come down and play some local cricket,” Vakarewa said. “I started there, and now I’m just working my way up, and now I’m a part of the first ever Thunder WBBL team.”

Around the grounds turnout for their first trial last week and will now hold a second trial on Sunday, November 15 from 12.30pm to 2.15pm. Penrith will also hold a trial for a Youth Women’s team on Sunday, November 29 from 3pm to 4.30pm. Cost for both trials is $5 per person.

CRICKET: The Penrith Cricket Club first grade side will be hoping to secure their third straight win as they take on Mosman in Round 4 of the Sydney Grade Cricket competition. Playing in a two day match at Allan Border Oval, Mosman won the toss and elected to bat first scoring 9/325 after 96 overs. Best with the ball for Penrith was young gun Jake Wholohan with 4/110 and captain Matt Halse with 3/70. Penrith and Mosman will return to action this Saturday morning from 10.30am.

FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers W-League side have lost their second game of the season, going down to the Brisbane Roar 3-0 last Sunday. The Wanderers were the dominant side in the opening 65 minutes at Marconi Stadium before the girls from Brisbane ran in three unanswered goals for an emphatic win. It was a cruel, frustrating and perplexing loss for the Wander Woman who played their best football since formation in 2012 and could have, very easily, scored four goals of their own. While it was a cruel defeat, the Wanderers will still have to do some soul searching to ensure that they take their chances in future games and rub out any possibility of an opposition fight back. The seventh-placed Wanderers will now take on the last-placed Sydney FC this Sunday afternoon at Pirtek Stadium.

BASEBALL: The Penrith Panthers first grade side will return to the pitch this Sunday when they take on Macarthur in Round 7 of the NSW State Baseball League. The top of the table Panthers enjoyed a well-earned break last round and will be hoping to continue their excellent form this weekend. GRIDIRON: The Nepean Ducks will return to action this Saturday when they take on Newcastle in Round 8 of the Gridiron NSW competition. The Ducks enjoyed a bye last round and will be hoping to secure their first win of the season this weekend. BASKETBALL: The Penrith Basketball Association have announced that they’ll likely field two Youth League Men’s teams in 2016. The local association received a great

estern Sydney’s most decorated player will return to his old stomping ground this weekend when his new side takes on the Wanderers. 2013 A-League Goalkeeper of the Year and 2014 AFC Champions League MVP, Ante Covic, will return to Pirtek Stadium for the first time this Sunday afternoon as a member of Perth Glory. The former Socceroo was one of several Wanderers players forced to find a new home this season after they were dramatically dumped by the club during the off-season. Fortunately for the veteran goalkeeper the West Australian franchise threw the 40-year-old a lifeline on a one year deal. Covic’s meeting against the Wanderers this Sunday will be the second time this year he’s faced his old club (FFA Cup in September) but will be the first clash at his former home in Parramatta. Speaking on Tuesday, experienced Wanderers striker Mark Bridge said he was feeling confident heading into the game. “We played them in the FFA Cup recently and they are a good side,” he said. “Perth’s first win against Adelaide last week was a good result and they are going to be tough.

Photo: Melinda Jane “We’re playing some good football and hopefully the boys are fit and healthy this week and we put on a good performance.” The Wanderers currently sit in last position on the A-League ladder having lost their second game of the season last Saturday evening against Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium. The Wanderers were the most dominant of the two sides in the heated battle but their crosstown rivals managed to get the strike they needed in the 88th minute to seal the late win. Western Sydney will battle Perth at 5pm this Sunday, November 1.

total of 10 Ironman competitors are supporting children and young people with cancer and their families at the Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney this November in Penrith. For the second year, national cancer charity Redkite is the chosen charity partner for the event at the Regatta Centre. “We are honoured to be the official charity of Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney,” Redkite General Manager, Monique Keighery said. “At Redkite our promise is to be there for children, teenagers and young adults with cancer and their families from the devastating moment of diagnosis, throughout treatment and for as long as they need us. “We provide essential support, from financial help to keep food on the table and petrol in the car, to information and counselling and help keeping up with school and training. It’s thanks to our dedicated community of supporters, including the inspiring athletes racing from Redkite at Ironman, who enable us to offer this support.”
