he Penrith Panthers saved one of the biggest rugby league stories of the year until the off-season, sacking coach Ivan Cleary and signing former Brisbane mentor Anthony Griffin to a three-year deal. 49-year-old Griffin, nicknamed ‘Hook’, was unveiled as Penrith’s new coach after the final year of Ivan Cleary’s contract was dramatically terminated on Monday afternoon by Panthers Executive General Manger, Phil Gould. Speaking at a packed press conference at Pepper Stadium on Wednesday, Gould said he felt it was the right time for the club to have a change of coach. “We did not advertise this position, we did not accept applications and we interviewed no other candidate. Our decision was that Anthony Griffin, and the knowledge that I had on him as a person and a coach, was the man that we wanted to run this organisation,” he said. “Anthony’s experience, in particular his background in developing elite junior talent through to NRL level, made him the perfect fit for this club. “We are certain he is the man to take advantage of the tremendous foundations established by our previous head coach Ivan Cleary.” It’s understood Gould had been secretly negotiating with Griffin, who was set to coach Redcliffe in the Queensland Cup next year, for some time. Gould revealed he spoke with a “number of people” at the Brisbane Broncos about Griffin’s strengths and characteristics. Story continues on » p. 3

Gus chops Cleary after season review Cleary “shocked and disappointed” after having final year of his contract at Penrith terminated Story continued from » p. 1 “Anthony’s previous club the Brisbane Broncos have long been considered the benchmark of professional rugby league worldwide,” Gould said. “The references we received from the Broncos organisation regarding Anthony’s character, work ethic, knowledge and love for the game were nothing short of impeccable. This merely confirmed in our own minds that Anthony is a valuable acquisition for Panthers.” Griffin, who worked as an assistant coach at Melbourne in the early 2000s before becoming head coach at Brisbane from 2011 to 2014, said he was thrilled to get a second chance at coaching in the NRL. “I’m very honoured to be in this position and very humbled to be coach of such a great club, the Penrith Panthers,” he said. “I’m very grateful for the faith the Panthers have shown in me. I promise the players, the staff and the members of this club that I won’t leave a stone unturned to make sure I do everything I possibly can to carry on the work that people have done here before, in particular Ivan Cleary, to make sure this is a proud and successful club in the future.”

Griffin’s arrival in Penrith on Wednesday came quite unexpectedly after Cleary was shown the door on Monday following a season review by Gould. Cleary still had one year remaining on his current contract but Gould felt the 44-year-old, who left a role at the New Zealand Warriors to come to Penrith in 2012, was struggling with the perils of coaching and needed a break. Cleary was named Dally M Coach of the Year in 2014 after guiding the Panthers to an unlikely preliminary finals appearance, however following a second straight year of crippling injuries, the Panthers suffered in 2015 and only narrowly missed the dreaded wooden spoon. “Ivan is a very proud and competitive person and whilst he won’t admit that he needs a break at this time, I just felt it was the right time for him to take a step back, grab a breath of fresh air and get ready for the next part of his career,” Gould said. Cleary left for an overseas holiday on Wednesday afternoon. “I am still a bit shocked and disappointed,” he told Sportal. “I’m going on a holiday and will definitely enjoy that.” Garth Brennan will be Griffin’s main assistant coach at the Panthers next year.

he idea that a new airport could be built at Badgerys Creek without a rail line to support it is simply ludicrous and lacks the appropriate vision and forethought you would expect to be attached to such a major project. It would appear that common sense has potentially prevailed, with reports emerging on Tuesday that the Federal Government was leaving the door open for a rail link to be built, linking Badgerys Creek with the Sydney CBD and key transport hubs in western Sydney. However, the Government seems hellbent on trying to convince us that upgrades to the road network mean that a rail link might not be needed until a decade after the airport first opens. That is simply ridiculous and evidence that modern governments often lack the visionary mentality required when it comes to infrastructure needs. Why wouldn’t you build the rail link well before you need it, to prepare for the years and decades ahead? Why would you risk potential chaos and disaster on Sydney’s already clogged road network? And why would you force airport workers and eventually travellers to get into their cars or onto buses when it is obvious that high speed rail is the best possible solution to get people in and out of the airport precinct? Indications this week are that some 10 million passengers per year could use the airport when it first opens in 2025. All 10 million will be expected to get to and from the airport by road, it seems. Does anyone seriously believe that is a workable solution?

T

Index

“Why would you risk potential chaos and disaster on Sydney’s already clogged road network?”

Can you imagine, in the years and decades to come, a couple of planes landing at Badgerys Creek at 7am and then thousands of passengers being thrown onto Sydney’s road network to get into the city or to other locations? After years of conjecture, confusion and mixed messages, we all now know that the airport at Badgerys Creek will go ahead. It is important for the future of Sydney and in particular this region that the airport happens – I think most of us now accept that. But it is so critical that we get it right, and it’s important that we build the required infrastructure to support it. Blind Freddy could see that a rail link is vital to the ultimate success of the new airport. If the airport opens without a rail link, mark my words, we will face mayhem almost immediately and the airport will risk becoming an infrastructure disaster.

Why we should still trust Gus When Phil Gould first arrived at Penrith and appointed Ivan Cleary as head coach for the 2012 season, not everybody was happy with the decision. In fact, many fans were upset that Steve Georgallis, who had stepped in to replace Matt Elliott on an interim basis after Gould showed him the door, was the man for the job. At the time, Phil Rothfield wrote in The Daily Telegraph that Penrith was facing a “full scale player revolt” over the Georgallis snubbing. How quickly time allows us to forget. Gould knew that Georgallis, as much as he had the support of the playing group at the time, wasn’t the man for the job at that particular time. He recruited Cleary, told him the raw truth about what he was about to confront and allowed him to re-build the Panthers one brick at a time. Gould got it right with Cleary’s appointment and there’s a very good chance that he got it right with his sacking on Monday as well. I feel deeply sorry for Cleary, and I certainly believe he leaves the club in a better place than when he first arrived, but Gould is employed on significant money to make decisions in the best interests of the footy team. The decision on Monday wasn’t made on a whim and wasn’t made without good reason. But it is true that Gould has taken a gamble. He has put his reputation and maybe even his pay packet on the line by avoiding the safe option and sticking with Cleary. Time will decide whether or not the gamble pays off.

Doctors wary of cannabis plan Clinical trials to determine success of medicinal cannabis DALE DRINKWATER

Dr Adrian Sheen holds concerns over the misuse of medicinal cannabis. Photo: Megan Dunn “If cannabis is seen as helping people in that stage of their life it should be made available.” NSW Minister for Medical Research, Pru Goward, said the NSW Government has committed $9 million to three clinical trials to support medicinal cannabis in the health system.

local doctor has warned of medicinal cannabis misuse after State and Federal Governments announced they will look to legally grow the drug. The NSW Government will now scout for potential sites after the Federal Minister for Health, Sussan Ley, granted the controlled cultivation of cannabis for medicinal or scientific purposes. Regentville general practitioner, Dr Adrian Sheen, said while the legalisation will benefit a small amount of seriously ill people, it’s inevitable the drug will be used for the wrong reasons. “Unfortunately it’s bound to be misused. It will open an enormous area where cannabis is misused, as it’s been found with many other potent medications,” he said. “There are many legal drugs on the market now that are regulated, and still getting misused.” Dr Sheen said despite the concerns, if the drug proves to provide relief from a range of debilitating or terminal illnesses in its clinical trials, it should be pursued. “I think that as a society we need to ensure that palliative care is the best we can provide,” he said.

“Those clinical trials include adults with a terminal illness who have symptoms such as pain, nausea and vomiting; children with severe, drug-resistant epilepsy and adults with chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, where standard treatment is ineffective,” she said. Ms Goward welcomed the Federal Government’s advocacy for the clinical trials, and said their allowance of controlled cultivation will cement Australia’s place as a world leader in the field. “We believe the approach the Federal Government is taking is sensible, measured and demonstrates forward thinking,” she said. “We do not want patients or carers having to play pharmacist, this collaborative approach ensures we have a way forward. It is important to get the scheme right.” The NSW Government has also invested up to $12 million over four years to establish the NSW Centre for Medicinal Cannabis Research and Innovation. Depending on the outcomes of the clinical trials, there will be a search for potential sites across the state to cultivate a pharmaceutical supply of cannabis. “This could open up a whole new industry for our regions,” NSW Minister for Primary Industries Niall Blair said.

Turnbull trains it to Penrith for roundtable DALE DRINKWATER

rime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has made his first visit to the Lindsay electorate since taking on the nation’s top job last month. Mr Turnbull travelled by train with senior minister Christopher Pyne to tour Western Sydney University’s (WSU) Corporate Centre at Werrington, and attend an innovation roundtable. Mr Turnbull commended the Corporate Centre’s LAUNCH PAD initiative, that provides support to western Sydney’s budding innovative new ‘smart’ businesses. “The work that is going on here, is absolutely critical to not only the future of western Sydney, but to the future of the whole nation,” Mr Turnbull said. “If we are going to remain, as we must, a high wage generous social welfare net economy, a prosperous economy, then we have to be more competitive, more productive, more innovative. You have to be more creative and that’s a wonderful thing to be.” At the centre, government, corporate and university experts provide mentorship to early stage businesses, to drive success in the innovation sector.

P

“There are enormous opportunities and here in Werrington we are seeing them coming to life with new technologies, new ideas and lots of jobs in western Sydney,” Mr Turnbull said. Representatives from the research sector, business and government convened at the roundtable, that will help form Mr Pyne’s new policy agenda around innovation and science. “I’m here to hear what they have to say... the Government wants to listen, and not just assume it knows every answer,” said Mr Pyne, the Minister for Innovation, Industry and Science. “Innovation, creative industries, startups, new technologies – these are the new economy, and Australia has the intellectual capacity to make the most of that.” Government attendees included Cabinet Secretary Arthur Sinodinos, Assistant Minister for Science Karen Andrews, Assistant Minister for Innovation Wyatt Roy and Lindsay MP Fiona Scott. They were joined by WSU representatives including Vice-Chancellor, Professor Barney Glover. “Our LAUNCH PAD initiative is a great example of how corporate and government support can help local start-ups make the leap from great idea to commercial success,” Mr Glover said.

Local issues at the forefront The Australian House of Representatives will trial a new Constituency Question Time that will give local Members an opportunity to ask specific questions relating to their electorates and the matters raised with them by their constituents. From the next sitting week until the end of the year the Government will trial ‘Constituency Question Time’ to run every sitting day as part of Questions Without Notice. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said the change to the running of Question Time will present greater opportunities for Government MPs, and if they choose Opposition MPs, to bring local issues in their electorate to the attention of relevant Ministers. “Representing their community is the first priority of every MP, regardless of which side of the House they sit on,” Mr Turnbull said. This change to Question Time was originally proposed by the Leader of the House, Christopher Pyne, in a speech to the Institute of Public Affairs at the beginning of 2013. “Local issues are the bread and butter of every Member’s job and the genuine concerns of constituents deserve to feature prominently in the Parliament,” Mr Pyne said. This will typically involve approximately five questions from Government Members to relevant Ministers each day.

Funds for schools Three local high schools will start sustainability projects with funding they received after attending this year’s Schools for Sustainability event. Schools for Sustainability is a joint project held in conjunction with Western Sydney University, Penrith Lakes Environmental Education Centre and Kingswood High School. The two day forum saw a number of local high schools come together where students were challenged to explore global and local sustainability issues through a series of engaging and interesting activities. Local schools that have received funding to start sustainability projects are Kingswood High School, St Marys Senior High School and Emmaus Catholic College.

NRL boss quits

National Rugby League (NRL) CEO Dave Smith announced on Tuesday that he was stepping down from the game’s top job. Mr Smith will end his controversial three years as NRL boss on November 30, with a major search now underway for his replacement. Penrith Panthers Group CEO Warren Wilson is expected to be a candidate for the position. “Rugby League is a fantastic game with wonderful people involved at every level and it has been a privilege to lead the game,” Mr Smith said. ARL Commission Chairman John Grant will take over on an interim basis until Mr Smith’s replacement is found.

Secure rail link for Badgerys Creek airport This week we received the Environmental Impact Statement and Council is ramping up its campaign to secure a rail link to the Western Line, connecting Badgerys Creek airport and improving access to thousands of future jobs. Each day more than 65,000 people leave Penrith to go to work, sitting on congested roads and crowded trains. Imagine the increased productivity if even before the airport opens in 2025 there was a direct rail link connecting the North and South West Growth Centres. This week we’ve written to the State and Federal Government asking for an opportunity to tell Penrith’s story and are asking for your help. Help us make the case for a more productive Penrith. Penrith CBD Overland Flow Flood Study 2015 The safety and resilience of our Community in times of natural disasters is important to Council. The need for contemporary flood modelling and floodplain management plans for our various floodplains and overland flooding areas is therefore essential. The purpose is to better understand the extent of flooding and hence be able to better manage the impact of flooding on people and properties. In accordance with the NSW Government’s Floodplain Development Manual, Council has identified priority drainage catchments across the LGA. Penrith CBD Catchment was identified as one of the highest priority catchments requiring a flood study and a floodplain risk management plan to effectively manage overland flows.

Airport

Noise levels not a major concern Residents encouraged to have their say after new airport’s environmental impacts revealed DALE DRINKWATER

4000 page document assessing the environmental impact of a 24 hour airport at Badgerys Creek was released to the public on Monday. The detailed draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) that has given the airport plan enough wind for take-off, will close for public comment after just 60 days. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said 60 days is not enough for the community to read over the lengthy document and submit their concerns. “I consider the 60 day exhibition period inadequate to address the level of detail involved and the impacts an airport may have,” she said. “The draft EIS is approximately 4000 pages. Penrith Council has been calling for a minimum of 90 days to respond to the draft EIS.” Penrith Council has vigorously advocated for the airport plan to benefit Penrith, and will make a submission around fully integrated road and rail, job stimulation and protecting the natural environment. On October 12, Federal Member for Lind-

A

The decibel levels of each noise level contour for a Boeing 747 say Fiona Scott sent a letter to Minister for the Environment, Greg Hunt, requesting consultation be stretched from 30 days to 60 days.

“By allowing this extra time, people can properly digest the EIS and respond accordingly,” she wrote. Now closing for comment on December

18, Ms Scott said she is pleased that Mr Hunt responded to her request, doubling the time that was initially expected. “The draft EIS is the culmination of over 700 field investigations and 19 technical studies,” she said. “It is important that residents here in Lindsay have a thorough look through.” The EIS analysed the development of a single runway airport that will be ready for 10 million yearly passengers by opening in 2025. It assessed the impact of an expected 200 aircraft movements per day, and suggested the maximum noise levels from a Boeing 747 will have little impact on Penrith. But former local Member, Jackie Kelly, isn’t buying it and believes noise will be a significant issue. “They said there will be no noise. Are you kidding me? If that’s true, without spending a cent of taxpayers money, just lift the curfew at Mascot,” she said. “There are five airport groups around Mascot and all they do is complain about aircraft noise. It will be just as noisy as Mascot.” Local residents can view the draft EIS by visiting www.westernsydneyairport.gov. au online.

Council is fit for the future

“I begged her to wake up” Mother’s heartbreaking story and her mission to raise still birth awareness

Penrith Deputy Mayor Ross Fowler and Mayor Karen McKeown DALE DRINKWATER

Penrith is the only western Sydney regional city declared ‘Fit for the Future’. The State Government assigned the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) to review the scale, capacity and financial stability of Councils across the state. Just one third of the 152 councils in NSW have been declared ‘fit’, and the two thirds that have not been face forced amalgamations if they don’t volunteer to merge with others. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown is delighted IPART confirmed Penrith’s strong position into the future, that has been backed by the community’s support and faith in Council. “One of the things IPART was looking at was debt and liabilities around assets and maintenance,” she said. “This Council saw the warning signs 10 years ago and was supported by the community to apply for a Special Rate Variation (SRV). “This SRV enabled us to do more than just the ‘bare minimum’ to many of our roads and buildings and has paid off in the long run by avoiding major repairs and upgrades.” As Penrith Council is considered ‘fit’, it now has access to a streamlined rate variation process, State Government borrowing, priority for government grants, and eligibility for additional devolved planning powers. The amalgamation of Councils is expected to save ratepayers $2 billion over the next 20 years.

Amanda Kirk with her baby Allyra. Photo: Heartfelt Photography JADE ALIPRANDI

t’s the pain that no one wants to talk about let alone go through, but Cranebrook resident Amanda Kirk bravely told her story at the Pregnancy and Infant Loss Ceremony at Nepean Hospital. Over 50 people were at the ceremony, held last Thursday, October 15, the third such event Nepean Hospital has held for Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. Ms Kirk had the room in tears, visibly emotional herself, as she told her story in the hope of inspiring others. It was July 1, 2013 and Ms Kirk was just over 38 weeks pregnant when she realised something was not right – she hadn’t felt her baby girl move for some time. After a trip to the doctors to check everything was okay, Ms Kirk was told her baby was gone.

21

I

“At my 20 week scan, the technician said I was completely safe and that I would soon be holding my baby in my arms, but little did I know how wrong those words would become,” Ms Kirk said. “I don’t remember if I cried when I was told the news, all I know is I kept repeating ‘I don’t understand’. “When I went home and walked into the nursery, that’s when it hit me – there would never be a baby in a pram or cot, she was never coming home.” Walking back into the hospital the next day, Ms Kirk realised her pregnant stomach hid the awful truth while others were welcoming their babies into the world. She was induced that day. “Deep down I still held hope that the doctors were wrong and they had made a terrible mistake, I think that’s what kept me going,” she said. At 12.43am on July 3, 2013, Ms Kirk welcomed Allyra Jane into the world.

“The silence was absolutely deafening,” she said. “There was no other cry except my own. As she was placed on my chest, I begged her to wake up.” Ms Kirk said it was in that moment, when she held her baby girl, that she truly knew what a mother’s love was and that it would never fade. “I spent hours watching her, trying to never forget what she looked like and how she smelt as I wanted to burn those images into my memory for all eternity,” Ms Kirk said. On July 30, 2013, Ms Kirk and her family said goodbye to Allyra. To this day Ms Kirk has raised over $20,000 for Still Birth Australia. “Still birth is something that needs major attention – the statistics speak for themselves,” Ms Kirk said. The Infant Loss Ceremony is expected to be held again next year.

Tackling violence Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown says domestic violence must be stamped out in the local community. “A change in people’s attitudes towards violence is needed,” Cr McKeown said. Cr McKeown said Penrith City Council has a long standing commitment to combating domestic violence and will continue to do so into the future. “Council provides ongoing support and assistance to the Nepean Domestic Violence Network to deliver projects and events that raise awareness of domestic and family violence as well as reducing the levels of that violence across the Penrith LGA,” she said. Council will hold a White Ribbon Day Walk on Wednesday, November 25 along the Nepean River. The walk starts at 5.30pm.

Fire preparation NSW Rural Fire Service crews will be conducting hazard reduction burns at Londonderry today (Friday, October 23). The burns will take place at the Richmond Greyhound Club at 312 Londonderry Road, Londonderry. The hazard reduction burn involves around 12ha of land. Crews were also scheduled to undertake hazard reduction burns on Carrington Road in Londonderry late yesterday afternoon (Thursday, October 22). Preparations are well underway for what is likely to be a busy summer for fire crews, who are anticipating hot conditions. Mild weather conditions are expected this weekend in Penrith.

Car booted out after TAFE stoush Londonderry MP given her marching orders from Parliament DALE DRINKWATER

ember for Londonderry Prue Car was last week ejected from NSW Parliament after a verbal stoush with Premier Mike Baird. During Question Time last week, the Labor MP quizzed the Liberal Government about suspected plans to sack 70 teachers from across western Sydney TAFE institutions. Ms Car said Mr Baird did not answer when asked to explain the decision, and when she was persistent she was ejected. “It says a lot about this Government’s priorities when MPs are kicked out for sticking up for TAFE services,” she said. “They can kick me out again and again but I won’t stop fighting for TAFE in western Sydney.” MPs are put on three calls (warnings) before being removed from the Chamber by the Speaker of the House. Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres has received just one call in the past, and condemned the example Ms Car set for her community. “She has demonstrated less respect and maturity than most school students in her electorate,” he said. “The look at me, I got thrown out of class attitude, is hardly the mark of a leader.”

M

Londonderry MP Prue Car was ejected from Parliament last week Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies, who has also never been removed from Parliament offered some advice to Ms Car. “My advice to the new Member for

Londonderry, who has been kicked out of the House twice, is that she can better represent her community inside the chamber rather than outside of it.”

This week, Council will celebrate Children’s Week with a series of free and fun events through the city. Children’s Week is a time for children to demonstrate their talents, skills and abilities. Thousands of children and their families around the country are involved in activities and events during “The Week” through schools, playgroups, childcare centres, kindergartens, cultural groups, libraries and community groups. Council’s Children’s Services plays an integral part in providing quality care that helps our youngest residents prepare for school and gives their parents and caregivers the opportunity for work and study. Council’s Children’s Services cover a wide range of childcare needs with more than 350 staff and 18 long day care centres, nine before and after school care centres, seven vacation care programs, five preschools, an occasional care service and Mobile Playvan. The free Mobile Playvan holds seven sessions a week at key locations throughout the City to address social isolation issues.

More than 200 families access the service each week. Children with additional needs are actively supported by our Children’s Services through inclusion initiatives at our preschools, long day care centres, outside of school hours services and in occasional care. Children’s Library Services at Penrith City Library provides access to a range of quality children’s resources. These resources include picture books, educational toys, junior fiction and non-fiction, an online homework help service ‘yourtutor’, DVDs, parenting magazines and books as well as a small but growing digital collection of eBooks. Our Library service has a dedicated Children’s Librarian to develop and implement a range of programs and activities for kids of all ages, with a combination of free and pay for use programs and a toy library. For a list of activities during Children’s Week go to penrithcity.nsw.gov. au. Have a great weekend. See you next week!

Crime

Video camera footage reveals terrifying rape of teenage girl incidents of sexual assault, for a variety of reasons. “Less than 20 per cent of these incidents are actually reported,” Ms Willis said. “There are a number of reasons but it’s mostly fear of the criminal justice system, the relationship with the offender/s, the community’s attitude towards the issue, and the questions that we at the centre have to ask before proceeding with any formal counselling. “It’s definitely beneficial for victims to come forward as soon as possible so they can receive proper counselling to help them on their road to recovery.” Tristan Carlyle-Watson, 25, was allegedly present during the attack and encouraged the others and also allegedly claimed to know nothing about it when contacted by the victim the next day. Among the five arrested are Kurt Stevenson, 24, Andrew Waters, 23, and Ayden Devereux, 24, who are all due to reappear in court in December, as well as Mr Carlyle-Watson. A 17-year-old was charged with a total of five counts of aggravated sexual assault and aggravated indecent assault. Mr Carlyle-Watson was charged with concealing a serious indictable offence. The girl is now undergoing counselling and is “not in a good way”, according to police.

JADE ALIPRANDI

ive people have been charged over the alleged gang rape of a teenage girl at St Clair earlier this year. The incident was only uncovered by police after they seized a GoPro camera in an unrelated graffiti operation, revealing disturbing footage involving the 16-year-old girl. The matter was referred to the NSW Police Force’s Child Abuse Squad. Commander of the Child Abuse Squad, Detective Inspector Peter Yeomans, told radio 2GB that it’s clear the girl was unconscious during the ordeal, and police believe her drink was spiked. “It was quite obvious to investigators that the child was either unconscious or semi-conscious during these assaults,” he said. “Some of these adult males are married with children.” Four men and a teenage boy were arrested last Wednesday, October 14 in relation to the incident and all appeared in court last Thursday. It’s understood the girl didn’t come forward about the incident because she had little to no knowledge of it actually happening. Karen Willis from the NSW Rape Crisis Centre said women often don’t report

Meet Chaser!

Hi, my friends call me Chaser but I am also known as PCC449 at the shelter. I’m a 4 year old Staffy x Kelpie, and I’ve been waiting at the shelter since June for my forever home. My favourite game is tug with my big rope toy; none of the volunteers have won against me yet! They say I am so strong! When I’m not playing, I am a smiley and cuddly guy. I love pats, you can tell because my tail doesn’t stop wagging! The volunteers say I am well behaved because I do not bark or jump on them. I don’t pull much on the lead either when they’re walking me about the shelter. I’ve been here so long now that I am starting to get a little anxious around the other dogs, but if they’re friendly to me I tend to ignore them once I have met them. If you have other dogs in your family, I’d really like to met them before going home with you, to be sure that we get along. I’d love for you to visit me . . . maybe we’ll fall in love!

FoHCAS is offering Chaser for the reduced adopt fee of $150. This includes desexing, a C5 vaccination, microchipping and lifetime registration. Chaser needs your help to find his forever home as he is not coping well in the shelter environment. If you could give him the home he is dreaming of please contact our shelter.

I am writing to you in disgust with the shock sacking of Ivan Cleary. Ivan has done a great job with the team over the last three years and has only had a bad year this year due to the huge injury toll. I am sure all of Penrith and most Panthers supporters know that the events of this year were largely out of Ivan’s control. I believe he did remarkably well considering most of his A team were out injured. Gus Gould is a megalomaniac out of control. He has lost a great asset to the club and next year would have been much better with several key players back on the paddock. I would like to add that this announcement comes on the back of Panthers signing Ivan’s son Nathan. I’m sure Nathan may have explored other options if he knew his dad was not going to be at Panthers next year. The boy is 17-18 and now committed to Panthers and doesn’t even know where his family will be living next year depending where Ivan gets a job. I hope Panthers members voice there disgust loudly. They could have at least given Ivan and Nathan more notice to give them a chance to find another club. Very poor form all round, Gus! I will of course still support the Panthers team as I have for many years but I will not be supporting/patronising the club while ever it is being run by Gus Gould. I hope they at least have the integrity to honour

Ivan’s contract in full. I personally hope Ivan goes on to bigger and better things. Best of luck, Ivan. We will miss you and so will Gus. GREG CRUMPTON, VIA EMAIL

Fantastic local couple I have just been lucky enough to meet this lovely couple (Recognising local grandparents, Weekender October 16). They are so interesting and truly have a fantastic knowledge of the local history etc. Their grandchildren are very lucky to have them in their lives. Hopefully all their efforts will be rewarded. ESTELLE COLEMAN, VIA WEBSITE

Worthy honour I couldn’t think of two more worthy recipients of this proud award. They have played a vital role in the community and also are caring and passionate about everything and everyone. JENNIFER SHEPHERD, VIA WEBSITE

Basketball blow This decision must be hard for those who had aspirations to play in the 2016 WCL competition (Basketball blow, Weekender October 16). What a shame some of the larger businesses in the Penrith district could not provide greater sponsorship support to keep this going. NERREL LOADER, VIA FACEBOOK

Now girls can join Movember fun too

It’s that time of year again

Campaign to promote men’s health expands with all new initiatives for 2015 DALE DRINKWATER

he ‘Movember’ phenomenon has been strongly focused on men, but now there’s a chance for women to get involved too. ‘MOVE’ is a new way for women to participate in Movember, through a simple 30 day fitness challenge to support men’s physical and mental health. Fit ‘n’ Fast Penrith General Manager, Rhiannon O’Loughlin, will partake in the new win-win challenge, and encourages local women to do the same. “I think it’s a great way for women to showcase their strengths. Women will be surprised at how much their bodies can actually achieve,” she said. “Two of my female employees will take part in this too, and we hope to raise money as a group.” Whether you walk to work or go for a run, no MOVE is too big or too small and how you get active is up to you. “It all starts with walking, if you have dogs take them, or just take your children to play at the park,” Ms O’Loughlin said. “I will squat every day for the whole month, Cassie will do 20 burpees and Jackie will do 20 push-ups every day.” The Movember Foundation said physical inactivity is the second great-

Are you ready to grow your mo?

Staff from Fit ‘n’ Fast Penrith are getting involved in a new Movember initiative est contributor to the cancer burden in Australia, behind tobacco smoking. Movember Foundation’s Executive Director, Paul Villanti, said while MOVE will benefit women’s health, it will positively encourage the men in their lives to do the same.

“Moving on a regular basis can lower your risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer by up to 50 per cent,” he said. To raise awareness of the 12 million Australians who have a sedentary lifestyle, join the MOVEment at www. movember.com.

Mo Bros, it’s that time of year again to grow your mo. Over the month of November, men of all ages, shapes and sizes across the country are encouraged to grow their moustache, and raise money and awareness for Movember. While a fun way to compete with your mates on who has the hairiest upper lip, Paul Villanti, Movember Foundation’s Executive Director, said the campaign has a very important goal. “The Movember moustache helps generate conversations and gets blokes talking about the bigger things in life, and taking action when they have a health problem,” he said. Millions have joined the men’s health movement, raising funds for projects that focus on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity. “Since 2003, five million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas around the world have helped raise an amazing $680 million to fund more than 1,000 men’s health projects in 21 countries,” Mr Villanti said.

White Ribbon Day

Locals riding to make a difference As White Ribbon Day approaches, a major bike ride will do its bit to raise vital awareness JADE ALIPRANDI

enrith residents will be taking a stand against domestic violence when they participate in a White Ribbon anti-domestic violence charity ride in a few weeks time. Running since 2012, Penrith resident Genelle Warne is the organiser of the ride after her work as a Domestic Violence Liaison Officer inspired her to help victims in another way. “A victim came in that year and wasn’t like other victims – my eyes were opened and I wanted to give back to the community in any way I could, outside of my job,” Ms Warne said. “The aim of the bike ride is to draw people’s attention to domestic violence and White Ribbon.” An event at The Coffee Club on the Nepean River was held earlier this month in an effort to boost awareness of the ride and domestic violence in general. A total of 40 cyclists will be riding from Newcastle to Blacktown over the course of two days and one morning, and will finish at the Blacktown Workers Club for a special White Ribbon breakfast. The team will ride in at about 6.30am.

P

Participants in an upcoming bike ride that will raise awareness of domestic violence

“I’m very passionate about what I do in work and outside of work and since the inception of this bike ride, I have noticed a real difference when it comes to people’s awareness about domestic violence,” Ms Warne said. “I love that I’m able to make a difference within local communities when it comes to domestic violence.” A car yard in Gosford and one in Blacktown have both donated a car each to help raise awareness for the bike ride with 3000 tickets being sold for people to go into the draw. At $20 a ticket, $60,000 will be raised for a women’s refuge in those local areas. “We would love to get a Penrith car yard on board with this so that we can provide funding to a Penrith refuge,” Ms Warne said. The bike ride will take place from November 21 to November 23 with the group travelling over 155 kilometres. The White Ribbon breakfast will be held on November 23 at Blacktown Workers Club from 7am with tickets $40 per person or you can get a table of six. You can contact the club on 9830 0600 for more information. White Ribbon Day is on Wednesday, November 25.

Locals out in force to remove graffiti from key CBD sites

ocals joined forces last weekend to remove graffiti across our city as part of NSW’s annual Graffiti Removal Day. Volunteers from Rotary, Penrith Council, NSW Police and RAAF Glenbrook Airforce Cadets got together to clean up the Penrith and St Marys CBDs and Werrington Railway Station on Sunday, October 18. Graffiti Removal Day spokesperson, Jeff Egan, said our local heroes contributed to removing an estimated 24,000 square metres of graffiti from over 400 sites across NSW. “Graffiti vandalism is a crime which costs businesses, households, State Government and local councils in NSW over $100 million each year,” he said. “By removing it, graffiti vandals don’t get the satisfaction of seeing their work.” This year’s event hit a record, with an army of 2500 volunteers cleaning more locations than ever before. “Every year this great community event continues to grow, with the number of volunteers up by 25 per cent, and a 35 per cent increase in clean-up sites,” he said. “Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of the day was the hundreds of metres of

The community got together on Sunday to remove graffiti and clean up their town for Graffiti Removal Day fencing and property which had not been re-tagged after last year’s Graffiti Removal Day.” While the day was a huge success, Mr Egan said it’s important not to forget about reporting graffiti all year long. “To stop graffiti vandalism we need members of the community to report it as soon as it appears,” he said. To report graffiti to Penrith Council, call the Graffiti Removal hotline on 1800 022 182.

Students and teachers met Richard Reid at a fundraising breakfast in Sydney last week Marking World Food Day and AntiPoverty Week, Foodbank NSW and ACT held the Big Breakfast to highlight a hidden issue across the state – hunger. The charity encourages a $2 donation to stop by for breakfast, which in turn provides five nutritious breakfasts to those in need. “We implemented a breakfast club earlier this year and Foodbank is one of the organisations that supplies our food. Students got to meet the people that support them, and see the bigger picture behind the club,” Ms Sirmais said.

A further $16,800 of equipment for the Emergency Department included two portable stands to transfer patients easier with mobile ventilators, and one ‘Icare PROtonometer’ that can measure pressure in the eye. Two automatic observation machines were also provided, that will allow nurses to attend to patients’ vital signs in a timely manner and monitor it correctly.

lenmore Park resident Blair Sayer is celebrating after he won a national competition when he designed his own logo that will eventually be printed on t-shirts and worn by thousands of people. The t-shirt competition was run by ‘Newtown Locals’ and was created for a good cause. The t-shirts with Mr Sayer’s logo on them will be available for purchase at the Newtown Festival in November, with all proceeds going to charity. Mr Sayer, a freelance illustrator for over 20 years, said he was happy to have won the competition. “I was really stoked to have won,” Mr Sayer said. “Illustrating is all I’ve really known and I’m very lucky to be making a living from it.” Mr Sayer said the image he designed just came to him and is of a luchador (Mexican wrestler) playing a dagwood dog. “I’m just weird I guess, and the image just came to me of the two things,” he joked. “People should get to the festival and buy my t-shirt to support a charity.” The Newtown Festival is the Newtown

Fitting tribute to Ron

Rodney Cavalier with Penrith Mayor, Karen McKeown at the book launch DALE DRINKWATER

n incredible book detailing the life of former Mayor and State Member for Penrith, the late Ron Mulock, has shed light on a man who worked tirelessly for western Sydney. Esteemed guests attended the launch of Mr Mulock’s official biography by David Clune and John Upton, Inside the Wran Era: The Ron Mulock Memoirs at a packed-out Civic Centre last week. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said the calibre of guests, that included former NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell and Rodney Cavalier, is a testament to the respect Mr Mulock received. “Ron was never about doing things for Ron. Ron had genuine concern for ordinary people, championed social justice and was a passionate advocate for western Sydney,” she said.

A

“Ron was known for not only the big things he achieved but also the many little things. It was this quality that drew so many people to him, that made him such a great family man and that underpinned his outstanding political achievements and reforms.” Mr Mulock served as a Councillor on Penrith Council for six years, and was the Mayor of Penrith from 1968 to 1971. He joined the Australian Labor Party in 1968, and from 1971 to 1988, Mr Mulock represented the Nepean, Penrith and St Marys regions at a state level. In 1984, Mr Mulock’s strong performance and personal popularity led to him becoming NSW Deputy Premier. He held numerous key portfolios during his time in Parliament. Mr Mulock passed away on September 4, 2014 aged 84. His legacy remains etched in the history of Penrith.

Morning tea a big hit Paceway raises $2,728

Watching woodwork come to life

Penrith Paceway recently held its 5th Pink Ribbon morning tea. It was a great day with the annual event raising $2,728 this year for the Nepean Hospital Breast Cancer Clinic. Over the last five years, the event has raised more than $13,000 for local community organisations. This year’s event was a huge success.

Bunnings Warehouse in Penrith took part in a woodworking D.I.Y activity last week in conjunction with RichmondPRA WestClub. The team created and built an outdoor setting for PRA WestClub Penrith using treated pine, and then stained it with Merbau coloured oil. The workshop was held at the Bunnings Warehouse on Wolseley Street in Penrith with the public on hand to watch the creation take place. It’s the second outdoor setting the team from RichmondPRA WestClub have made.

SPECIAL FEATURE HEALTH & WELLBEING olycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) involves the formation of many cysts on a woman’s ovaries. These cysts are filled with fluid and are found on or beside the ovaries and can vary in size. There is no definite cause for these cysts. Some theories include hormone imbalance, diet, poor circulation, liver problems, sugar imbalance and lack of exercise. These cysts can be painful, they can also cause acne, light or infrequent periods, obesity and body hair growth. However a third of women with cysts don’t experience symptoms. These women rely on diagnosis from a pelvic exam done during a pap smear. Ultrasound scans are used to confirm the cysts. As well as the above symptoms, PCOS is now recognised as a condition that increases the chances of miscarriage. What to do: If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms or you notice any changes in your menstrual cycle please consult your doctor. The doctor will diagnose and manage the condition if needed. • Pap smear: Have this done at least every two years. • Diet: Speak to your doctor about getting a care plan with Medicare funded dietician appointments. The dietician can design a healthy eating plan. Avoid saturated fats, they interfere with hormone and liver function. Essential fatty acids found in fish, nuts and seeds are beneficial. Avoid alcohol, coffee and tea as they can interfere with hormone function.

• Vitamins: Speak to a naturopath to see what you may need. Vitamins that help regulate hormones, decrease inflammation, support the liver and help the immune system are all useful. Examples of these include omega-3, lecithin and magnesium.

If you have any questions on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome please speak to your pharmacist or doctor. As always it is important to get professional medical advice so you know exactly how to tackle problems in the best possible manner.

earching for the most efficient way to get lean, conditioned, and tough? Look no further than HIIT. We can’t promise it’s easy… but it sure gets results. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) describes any workout that alternates between intense bursts of activity and fixed periods of less-intense activity or even complete rest. Here are some of the proven benefits of HIIT:

S George

Ftynogiannis

1. Burn More Fat: Not only do you burn more calories during a HIIT workout, but the effect of all that intense exertion kicks your body’s repair cycle into overdrive. That means you burn more fat and calories in the 24 hours after a HIIT workout than you do after a jog or long walk.

It’s tough, but it will get you results

2. Lose Weight, Not Muscle: Anyone who has been on a diet knows that it’s hard to not lose muscle mass along with fat. While steady state cardio seems to encourage muscle loss, studies show that both weight training and HIIT workouts allow dieters to preserve their hard-earned muscles while ensuring most of the weight lost comes from fat stores.

Revolutions Health & Fitness Centre 4735 5554 www.revolutionsgym.com.au

3. Efficient: HIIT is the ideal workout for anyone, especially those on a busy schedule. Research shows you can achieve more progress in a mere 15 minutes of interval training (done three times a week) than jogging on the treadmill for an hour.

According to a 2011 study presented at the American College of Sports Medicine Annual Meeting, just two weeks of highintensity intervals improves your aerobic capacity as much as six to eight weeks of endurance training. 4. Healthier Heart: Most people aren’t used to pushing into the anaerobic zone (that lovely place where you can’t breathe and you feel like your heart is trying to jump out of your chest). But in this case, extreme training produces extreme results. One 2006 study found that after eight weeks of doing HIIT workouts, subjects could

bicycle twice as long as they could before the study, while maintaining the same pace. 5. Increase Metabolism: In addition to increased fat burning and more muscle preserved, HIIT stimulates production of your human growth hormone (HGH) by up to 450 per cent during the 24 hours after you finish your workout. This is great news since HGH is not only responsible for increased calorie burn but also slows down the aging process, making you younger both inside and out! Make HIIT part of your workout!

hat should you do if you suffer from some or all of these – lethargy, abdominal pain, bloating, excessive wind, skin rash, general aches and pains and poor concentration? Given the profusion of information on gluten in the media, the first thing some people do is give up gluten to see how they go – but that is not recommended, even if you are experiencing symptoms related to eating gluten. This is because there could be other problems which have similar symptoms – like non-coeliac gluten sensitivity and irritable bowel syndrome, and your GP will need to rule those out with a few tests. It’s therefore essential to keep eating gluten in order for the tests to be accurate. People attribute these symptoms to gluten but in reality it could be malabsorption of certain carbohydrates together called FODMAPS. These foods can draw water into the intestine and potentially ferment, causing digestive problems for some people.

Dhillon Should I start a gluten free diet? Medical & Fitness Centre 4736 6567 www.medicalfitness.com.au

What is the difference between coeliac, wheat allergy and non -coeliac gluten sensitivity? Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks itself when gluten is eaten. This causes damage to the lining of the gut and means that the body cannot properly absorb nutrients from food. Coeliac disease is not a food allergy or intolerance. Coeliac disease may occur at any age,

even in the elderly. While people must have a genetic predisposition to it, researchers don’t know why some people develop an immune reaction after years of tolerance to gluten. Wheat allergy is a reaction to proteins found in wheat, triggered by the immune system and usually occurs within seconds or minutes of eating. Non coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) is

when symptoms similar to coeliac disease are experienced, but there are no associated antibodies and no damage to the lining of the gut. It is still not completely understood yet. Take home message: In order to be tested for coeliac disease You Must Keep Eating Gluten! Please do not start a gluten free diet until you have been tested.

SPECIAL FEATURE HEALTH & WELLBEING ou have probably heard of stand-up desks and wondered if they’re really all they’re cracked up to be. Well, here’s 10 reasons why you should consider standing at work.

Y Mark

Hawkins Top 10 reasons you should stand at work Nepean Office Furniture & Supplies 4721 4857 www.nepeanofficefurniture.com.au

1. Add Two Years To Your Life Research indicates that sitting more than three hours a day cuts your life expectancy by two years. Sedentary behaviour (referred to as Sitting Disease) is in the same category as smoking and obesity. Peter Katzmarzyk – Louisiana State University’s Pennington Biomedical Research Centre 2. Burn 42 More Calories Per Hour A UK study found the average calories burned while sitting was 2.6 calories per minute compared to 3.3 calories per minute while standing. Dr. John Buckley – University of Chester 3. Reduce Your Risk Of Dying Of A Heart Attack By 46 Per Cent Multiple studies have shown that people who sit for most of the day are 54 per cent more likely to die of a heart attack, no matter how much you exercise or how well you eat. Peter Katzmarzyk – Louisiana State University’s Pennington Biomedical Research Centre 4. Lower Your Risk Of Cancer Studies have linked sitting to a greater risk for colon, breast and endometrial cancers due to increased insulin production from idle muscles.

Charles E. Matthews – National Cancer Institute Investigator 5. Reduce Your Back and Neck Pain People who sit more are at greater risk for herniated lumbar disks, as well as strained cervical vertebrae in the neck leading to permanent imbalances. Jay Dicharry – Director of the REP Biomechanics Lab in Bend Oregon 6. Get 18 Per Cent More Work Done A study found that an employer who provided employees with good ergonomic furniture and training in how to use it realised about $367 per day more income per employee (a 17.8 per cent productivity gain) than did a control group. Tom Albin – Office Ergonomics Research Committee, Inc 7. Be A Better Co-Worker The average American spends 55 per cent of waking time in sedentary behaviours. People who stand have a smaller barrier to engage with others in the workplace, thus improving their social and professional relationships. 2008 Vanderbilt University study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology 8. Sleep Better Sitting for long periods of time slows blood circulation, which causes fluid to pool in the legs. This can ultimately cause restlessness and lead to loss of sleep.

James Levine – Director of Obesity Solutions at Mayo Clinic 9. Lower Healthcare Costs A HealthPartners study saw overall health increase with its participants who stood at work, leading to lower projected health care costs in the long run of a business. JourneyWell – a HealthPartners wellness solution 10. Feel Healthier According to a 2011 study, 75 per cent of people felt healthier overall after standing at work.

BUSINESS T trust or not to trust: To A difficult call to make

recently discovered that someone I thought I could trust was not trustworthy. This person divulged information that I had assumed would not be repeated to others. This assumption was based on the fact that we were good friends, but also because they had shared similar confidential information with me. It was not that I stored that person’s information thinking that it was a form of ‘insurance’, but rather, an assumption that we had a high level of trust because we were both willing to share this type of information with each other. Unfortunately for all of us, this scenario is the risk that we take when we choose to trust people. In business, many of us spend a great deal of time cultivating relationships to get ourselves known in the local community. Sometimes these ‘work’ relationships become friendships which is a lovely outcome! But it can also lead to situations where we open ourselves up to confidences

being broken or information we have shared being used against us. Hopefully this has never happened to you! But if it has, it is important not to let it affect your interactions with others. Instead, let it be a learning experience for you, so that in future, you might notice, or listen to, the warning signs. So often in hindsight, the signs were there but because we trust, we overlook them. Sometimes trust can be eroded over time, rather than one specific incident, because we tolerate behaviours or actions that should be called to account. So when trust is broken, it is also important to evaluate what part you played in it. Did you allow someone to take advantage of your generosity? Did you allow negativity or cynicism to become a feature of your interactions? Being aware of your role can give you more insight into future relationships and allow you to be more rigorous in your due diligence and evaluation of a given situation.

C

ybercrime is an issue which impacts the lives of many Australians. Directed at computers or other devices (like hacking), common types of cybercrime include hacking, online scams and fraud, identity theft, attacks on computer systems and illegal or prohibited online content. The cybercriminals of the world must never stop trying to come up with new ways of cracking our passwords and stealing out data. It’s a constant game, and it’s vital that you stay informed about the latest trends and scams. Here are three to look out for: The fake attachment These are usually files that appear to be documents but contain hidden malware. My office even encountered one really good one. We were advertising for new staff and had some resumes sent via attachment in a zip folder. Most were fine but one opened up vicious malware that essentially captured every file on our office’s shared drive. Thanks to our IT consultants we got it all back but if not, we would have had to pay the requested ransom.

The request for confirmation With LinkedIn and Facebook’s combined ‘population’ being so big, criminals can generally assume that the CEO and senior managers of a target company have online profiles floating around somewhere. Using the information in those profiles they can then set up a convincing fake email or social media accounts and send emails from the manager they’re impersonating to lower-level staff requesting that they confirm sensitive information, like passwords or security procedures. The social media scam Some cybercriminals are creating tailored social media advertisements that take users who click through to online scams, or trick them into downloading viruses and malware. When it comes to your business, ensure any social media log-ins are carefully protected, and be sure to report any content that uses your brand to dupe customers. If in doubt, it’s probably best not to click, or to check with an expert.

HISTORY

Turning back Time

Hospital grew to become a leader It’s now a huge health facility servicing our growing region, but Nepean Hospital grew from very simple beginnings. Jade Aliprandi tracks its history in the local region...

November 1993 – Looking east towards the main building fronting Parker Street. Photo: Penrith City Library

N

epean Hospital in Kingswood is currently one of the largest serving hospitals in NSW, but this wasn’t always the case. The first hospital opened in 1860 in the street now known as Cox Avenue, with just six beds for in-patients and accommodation for the live-in wardsperson and his wife. The pair nursed the patients, cooked the meals, and cleaned the hospital among other required duties. Patients eventually had to be taken by train or cart over a rough dirt road to the hospital at Parramatta after an economic depression that made it financially impossible to keep the hospital in Penrith open, with it eventually closing in 1870. The Nepean Cottage Hospital was opened in 1895 at Lemongrove and was divided into three sections: the male ward, female ward and the infectious ward. In 1926, the name was changed to Nepean District Hospital with planning for an upgrade to the hospital commenc-

ing in 1938, due to the hospital becoming too small. The arrival of the war suspended these plans but with the influx of more workers and residents in the area, planning quickly commenced again, with a new site and building envisaged. In 1946, around 25 acres of land was purchased, with another eight acres given as a gift, for the new Nepean Hospital to be built on. The land was and still is bounded by Parker Street, Derby Street, Somerset Street, the Great Western Highway and Barber Avenue. Nepean Hospital was officially opened in 1956 before a crowd of 4,000 people. It has since grown in size and capacity and houses some of the most up-to-date technology, leading it to become one of the biggest hospitals in NSW. Patients were transferred from the old hospital to the new site at Kingswood by six ambulances on Saturday, June 30 1956, with it taking just over an hour to get all the patients across. Only mothers with new babies were left in the old building.

The first patient of the new hospital was former editor of the Nepean Times, Archie Rodgers. It became clear to the government that the 100 bed hospital wasn’t going to be big enough for the ever growing Nepean district. Between 1957 and 1958 there were 831 births, increasing to 1,446 from 1962 to 1963. In 1965 a new maternity ward was added with the average stay of a newborn baby 7.3 days at the time. There were several changes made throughout the years to accommodate for the growing population in the Nepean area, including a $20.8 million Women and Children’s Health building and an $8.6 million revamp of the west wing, including the emergency department. In 1997, the NSW Health Department submitted a development application (DA) to erect Stage 2 of the redevelopment of Nepean Hospital. The proposal included demolition of the existing building housing the Maternity Department, erection of a new four storey building to accommodate the Women and Children’s Unit, an erection of three

additional floors to the southern end of the West Block and a revised road strategy including parking facilities. The major component of this redevelopment was the Women and Children’s Unit that was to replace the existing Maternity Department building. It was to be completed in February 1999. In October of 1999, a separate DA was received by Penrith Council naming the masterplan for the hospital that was originally listed on the 1997 DA. The plan included further alterations and additions to the hospital comprising a Nuclear Medicine, Pathology and Intensive Care Unit with this DA seeking approval for these. Nepean Hospital now aids patients with several types of medical care including maternity, gynaecology, neonatal intensive care, emergency, diagnostics, paediatric, surgical, intensive care, coronary care, rehabilitation and mental health. The hospital is also home to a Tresillian Family Care Centre, a Menopause Service, the Nepean Cancer Care Centre, a Diabetes Service and the Wentworth Centre for Drug and Alcohol Medicine.

PENRITH’S BIGGEST AND BEST LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE

Effie is Working class, but all class

A KATE REID

s a single woman I figured it couldn’t hurt to get some tips from someone who has spent plenty of years on the dating scene, and what better woman to ask than the beautiful Greek goddess/hairdresser Effie, who’s heading to Penrith with her show ‘A Date With Effie’. “You gotta use your noggin’ and not choose anyone that’s a bit slim shady,” she tells me down the phone in her straight to the point style. “But you’ve also gotta look hot, you’ve gotta have the drool factor.” With her sky high hair and spot on fashion sense Effie knows what she’s worth and after being single for much of her life she’s clearly not ready to settle for any old guy. “I want someone rich, loaded. Spondoolies are very important to me, I love a bit of cash,” she said. “I know what guys are going to get from getting me, that’s worth paying for through the nose. “I’m popular and I’m very attractive, I’m an asset for any guy. I could get them into the Logies, I could do hair for them and their family members. I’m the absolute trophy wife.” Effie’s also vocal about the fact she doesn’t want to be a play thing for a man. “Guys, no offence, they’ve got an aroused compass in their pants that’s pointing them in all sorts of bad directions and I’m not going to be just another person they can brag about,” she said.

As part of her search for love Effie will be coming to Penrith to seek help from local audiences in an attempt to find her perfect cashed up Romeo. “I find three guys in the audience as potential date possibilities and I get to know them and then I get the audience to choose who I should go on a date with, because obviously my judgement hasn’t been great,” she said. Since we first met Effie, and her cousin Jim, on ‘Acropolis Now’ in the late 80s the type of men she has dated has changed quite a bit. “I used to be a lot more traditional, I used to go for the obvious Greek guys. I did a decade of Greeks, very disappointing because you don’t go out with them, you go out with their mothers,” she said. “So I decided to get a bit more United Nations, and I’m very open now. “I don’t want them to be unhygienic or on the nose or anything like that, no, but if they’ve got good intentions, a big heart, and an even bigger bank account, well they might have a chance.” Along with her talent as a hairdresser and stage queen, Effie has penned her own novel, Effie’s Guide to Being Up Yourself. “If you don’t have self respect you’ve got nothing,” Effie said about the message she wanted to portray in what she describes as a confidence ‘bible’. “I say you take your individuality, your character, and you maximise it, you add a lot of self respect and you have faith that in the end it’s all going to pay off.” It’s this self confessed ‘up yourself’ personality that Effie believes is the reason why audiences adore her. “I’m not spinning nonsense about who I’m trying to be in the world,” she said. “I’m saying this is what I am and it doesn’t get better than this, guys.

“I am from the western suburbs myself, I am proud of the fact that I’m from there. I’m working class but I’m all class. “So step up guys, here’s your chance at winning the love lotto.” Penrith men, you’ve been warned.

‘A Date with Effie’ will be on at the Evan Theatre at Penrith Panthers on Friday, November 6 at 8pm. Tickets are $31.55. For more information or to purchase tickets visit www.penrith.panthers.com. au or call 4720 5555.

ocals are being urged to check out the Museum of Fire this weekend with a special Doll, Bear and Craft Show to be held. Something different to other events normally held at the Museum of Fire, the Doll, Bear and Craft Show brings in around 5000 people over the course of the weekend each year. Now in its 27th year, CEO and Chairman of the Museum of Fire, Mark White, says it’s as good a time as any to check out the show as well as the museum itself. “The show is always successful, just like our truck shows,” he said. “Coming to the craft show is always

a good reason for a repeat visit to the Museum of Fire with the message at the end of the day always about fire safety and the role of a fireman – something well-respected in this community.” Locals will enjoy over 100 stalls dedicated to dolls and accessories, wooden toys, doll houses, teddy bear and making supplies and aromatherapy, among other things. “It’s a well-recognised show nationally and it also helps us raise much-needed funds for the museum,” Mr White said. “It also presents a good opportunity for people to buy unique gifts, especially so close to Christmas.” The Doll, Bear and Craft Show is on this weekend, October 24 and 25, from 9.30am to 4pm at the Museum of Fire at 1 Museum Drive, Penrith.

ustralian rock legends The Screaming Jets will be heading back to western Sydney as part of their ‘Rock n Roll Rampage’ tour. The band will be bringing their music to the Rooty Hill RSL stage next weekend and will no doubt have crowds rocking out to their biggest hits including ‘Sad Song’, ‘Better’, ‘Helping Hand’ and ‘October Grey’. With a tour name like ‘Rock n Roll Rampage’, it’s clear the band, led by Dave Gleeson, are preparing for some killer live shows. “The name refers to those great old days when rock bands would come

storming through cities and suburbs, rockin’ out and contributing to the delinquency of minors,” Gleeson said of the show. “This is what we still strive to do today. We are now contributing to the delinquency of minors and their parents… proudly.” The Screaming Jets are also currently in the process of releasing a new album, so keep an eye out for more music from one of Australia’s biggest and best rock acts. The Screaming Jets will be performing at Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, October 31 at 7.30pm. Tickets are $45. Ê Channel Seven is currently casting families for a new television series called ‘Family Challenge’. The casting ad asks “Would you like to change your family’s lifestyle for a short time?”. The series is looking for families with school age children who are happy to share their lifestyle and family values with others. It would be great to have a Penrith family on here, you can apply by visiting go.mycastingnet. com/Apply/Show/familychallenge. Ê Jamie Oliver will be back on Channel Ten next week with his latest UK series ‘Jamie’s Super Food’. The six part series will replace ‘The Bachelorette’ on Thursdays from 7.30pm on October 29. Ê The controversial SBS series ‘Struggle Street’ could be back for another series after it was revealed producers were currently talking with groups, leaders and community members across several Australian suburbs. It’s understood at least two people in the western Melbourne suburb of Sunshine have been test-filmed by producers. The first series of ‘Struggle Street’, set in Mt Druitt, was a huge ratings success despite causing a wave of backlash.

Ê After 12 years and 22 seasons ‘America’s Next Top Model’ is finally over. Long-time host and model Tyra Banks announced the news on Twitter last week. The final season, Cycle 22, is currently airing on FOX8. Ê Former ‘Better Homes and Gardens’ host turned pretend serial killer, John Jarratt, will reprise his role as the terrifying Mick Taylor in Stan’s spin-off series ‘Wolf Creek’. The six part psychological thriller, which went into production this week, will air in mid-2016. Ê Foxtel’s LifeStyle Home channel is set to air Jamie Durie’s latest US series, ‘Outback Nation’, which sees him landscaping backyards in America. The series will premiere on Monday, November 22 at 9.30pm. Ê Lastly, how crazy is this? ‘The Big Bang Theory’ aired on four free to air channels this week… yes, four! On Sunday it aired on GO! and 7Mate; on Monday it aired on GO!, 7Mate and Seven; and on Tuesday it aired on GO!, 7Mate and Nine. Not to mention ‘Big Bang’ also aired on Foxtel’s Comedy Channel all week! If you’re a fan of the show, you’ve been in TV heaven this week!

Each day more than 65,000* people leave Penrith City to go to work, sitting on congested roads and crowded trains, taking them away from their homes and families. So many extra jobs could be available in Western Sydney and within an easy commute if the North and South West Growth Centres were connected. Imagine the increased productivity if even before the airport opens in 2025, the Western Sydney Orbital was complete and the South West rail line was extended to meet the Western Line at Penrith and beyond to the North West, creating better access to thousands of new jobs.

Help us make the case for a more productive Penrith. Find out what we’re doing and take our survey at penrithcity.nsw.gov.au *Source ABS

REVIEW W EI V E R

DVD Jurassic World

Rated M // KATE REID ‘Jurassic World’ takes audiences back to one of the biggest, and most action packed, film franchises of all time. The fourth instalment in the series is set two decades after John Hammond’s original idea for a dinosaur themed wildlife park. The current park, ‘Jurassic World’ has become a huge success but the safety of visitors and staff is compromised when a genetically modified dinosaur escapes from its compound. Raptor trainer Owen (Chris Pratt) and park operations manager Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) must find a way to stop this ferocious killing machine before it destroys ‘Jurassic World’ and everything in it.

Sequels often struggle to stay as fresh and as relevant as the original film, and while ‘Jurassic World’ doesn’t quite live up to the excitement of ‘Jurassic Park’ it’s still a good movie in its own right. The range of dinosaurs featured in the park is just as spectacular as ever, and Chris and Bryce are perfect in the roles of Owen and Claire. The inclusion of a genetically modified dinosaur keeps the subject matter topical and the effects are once again spot on. ‘Jurassic World’ is a suspenseful action film that fans of the series will surely love. If you loved the originals, you need to see this one.

DVD Magic Mike XXL

Rated MA // KATE REID

Boy & Bear

Limit of Love // KATE REID In every genre there’s a handful of bands that manage to find the musical sweet spot, that place where tradition and innovation mix to create a unique and compelling sound. Within the folk/rock genre, Boy & Bear is one of those bands. The Aussie quintet has just released their third album ‘Limit of Love’ and it’s a stunning tribute to the talent of this group of musicians. There’s plenty of variety on this release, from the moody and expansive ‘Showdown’, to perfect summer tracks like ‘Hollow Ground’. Aside from the songwriting, one of the main strengths of the band’s sound has always been the haunting vocals of Dave Hosking and this album once again sees him in fine form. ‘Limit of Love’ is a beautiful album that proves that Boy & Bear have much more to offer fans, new and old.

4.5 STARS

‘Magic Mike XXL’ takes place three years after the first film and sees Mike working on his furniture business after leaving the Kings of Tampa. But after a phone call from the guys inviting him to a stripper convention, he decides to join them for one last performance. The good thing about this film is

there’s no false pretences, you know exactly what you’re going to see. But what I really enjoyed about ‘Magic Mike XXL’ was how the film focused not just on the guys and their routine, but on the women’s enjoyment and entertainment as well. The Kings of Tampa go out of their way to make their female audience members feel special. Beyond the physical aspects of the film it’s really hard not to warm to these lovable characters. There’s a great sense of camaraderie amongst the group, who support each other and have a fun time in the process. ‘Magic Mike XXL’ should also be

commended for the way it highlights female sexuality. It’s nice to see a story that embraces the fact that women like pleasure just as much as men do. It’s also great to see more bad ass female characters like strip club owner Rome (Jada Pinkett Smith), plus a cast of female audience members that cover a diverse range of ages, races and body types. ‘Magic Mike XXL’ is pretty much the film equivalent of junk food. It’s not going to provide you with a huge amount of nourishment but it’s just so damn delicious!

Local McDonald’s stores Saturday, October 17

Penrith locals get McHappy On Saturday, October 17 Penrith residents turned out to McDonald’s stores across the local area to take part in this year’s McHappy Day. Celebrating its 25th year, McHappy Day has raised more than $28 million for Ronald McDonald House Charities, who offer much needed support to seriously ill children and their families. Diners helped raise money for the charity through the purchase of a Big Mac, Helping Hand or the red and white striped Ronald socks. There was also plenty of time for fun with face painting and activities for the kids. Local politicians including Stuart Ayres, Fiona Scott and Prue Car also got to work behind the counter to help the cause. Photos: Megan Dunn

WINE LIST

Far from flat

P

eter Logan has added a Cabernet Merlot to his portfolio of Apple Tree Flat wines from the Mudgee area in the high elevation Central Ranges of NSW, the latest maker to turn to this increasingly popular blend that many consider to be one of the great varietal combinations. Although he’s been making a very more-ish Merlot for some time, it’s Peter’s first use of Cabernet Sauvignon and he certainly hit pay-dirt with this first harvest as it came from the 2013 vintage – and that was one of the most sensational in Mudgee for many years. Those who enjoy Cabernet Merlot will find this a really rich, mouth-filling blend while still being medium bodied, the palate reflecting the roughly equal parts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the blend, and all about flavours of rich dark blueberries and raspberries, dark chocolate, thyme and a fresh earthiness. At just $13 it’s an excellent and well-priced drop to put on the table with a lamb roast. One to note: Small family-owned Pipers Brook Vineyard in north-eastern Tasmania has released a lovely sparkling from the 2009 vintage that was a cool to mild one in this southern-most of our winemaking regions, and considered by many as a year better for sparkling wine production than for table wine. A blend of Champagne’s “Holy Trinity” of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier, this rewardingly fresh bubbly has a fine, persistent bead and creamy texture, and is a drop that Chief Winemaker, René Bezemer said back in 2009 was made with ageing potential in mind of something like 10 years. It retails at $37.

LIFE & STYLE PENRITH’S MOST RESPECTED LINE-UP OF EXPERTS ARIES

MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

Joint ventures and relationship improvements are on the table BUT don’t spoil a potentially positive and productive week by being an impulsive Ram and putting your foot firmly in your mouth! Slow down and strive to think before you speak. Tuesday’s Full Moon fires up your spending gene BUT – before you start splashing cash around – make sure you consult with your romantic or business partner, so you know you’re both on the same financial page.

Joanne Madeline

Moore

HOROSCOPES

TAURUS

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

The week starts wonderfully well, as you enjoy the last lucky moments of the Venus/Jupiter conjunction. Good fortune or happy news comes courtesy of a child, teenager, friend, lover or via a creative project, favourite hobby or sporting endeavour. Then Tuesday’s Full Moon in Taurus emphasises your practical side, as an idea or project comes to fruition (or a problem comes to a head). Make sure you handle things in a suitably sensible and stylish fashion.

GEMINI

MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

Gung-ho Geminis are raring to go! But don’t let your enthusiasm for an exciting new project overtake your ability to knuckle down and get the job done. If you promise more than you can deliver, then others will just end up feeling disappointed. Whereas, if you pace yourself and listen to your inner voice then you’ll have a stimulating and satisfying week. Be inspired by birthday great Bill Gates (born on October 28, 1955): “Often you have to rely on your intuition.”

CANCER

JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

Weekly posts at www.BohoAstro.com www.twitter.com/JoMadelineMoore Copyright Joanne Madeline Moore 2015

If you’re having relationship problems, they won’t be resolved by curling up in your shell. Be courageous! You’re often teary on a Full Moon but this one’s in earthy Taurus, so you’ll feel more emotionally grounded. It’s also a wonderful week to network with colleagues, as you fraternise with a fabulous new crowd. On the weekend your creativity and compassion are sparked, when you connect with your inner muse.

LEO

JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

It’s the perfect week to throw embryonic dreams or fledgling projects into the spotlight, as the Full Moon fires up your reputation zone. Don’t worry if they’re not quite ready. Public scrutiny (as well as feedback from family and friends) will let you know if you’re on the right track. Then you can go back to the drawing board, where you can rework and re-imagine. Your motto for the moment is from birthday great John Keats: “Nothing ever becomes real until it is experienced.”

VIRGO

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

Self-improvement is on the agenda! You’re keen to shop up a storm, as you find ways to improve your physical appearance. So it’s a terrific time to buy a new outfit, have a haircut or purchase beauty products. You’re also keen to travel or learn something new, as the Full Moon stimulates your adventure and study zone. But – if you rush communication or neglect important details – it could lead to mix-ups about money or problems with a relative or neighbour.

LIBRA

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

You’re in an uncharacteristic rush but do you know where you’re going? It’s not a good week to make important decisions, as your mind is racing. Wait until you’re feeling more settled and focused. Close relationships could also be confusing, as misread motives lead to irrational thinking. So it would be wise to spend less time talking and more time listening. Some Librans will experience the phenomenon of deja-vu, as you meet someone special or go somewhere ‘new’.

SCORPIO

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Stubborn Scorpios can too easily get stuck in a relationship time warp. If things aren’t going well in your love life, perhaps it’s time to keep what’s working and change what isn’t? The trick is knowing which is which! So this week’s challenge is to ride the winds of change, and keep things in perspective. Your mantra for the moment is from fellow Scorpio, Neil Young: “As you go through life, you’ve got to see the valleys as well as the peaks.”

SAGITTARIUS

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

Your sunny Sagittarian side shines for all to see – especially when dealing with the public. Influential people are waiting to assist you so don’t be too proud to ask for help if you need it. And make sure you pace yourself. Rushing around won’t necessarily get you to the finishing line any faster! The Full Moon lights up your work zone, so you’re keen to be in charge. But are you being the boss – or just plain bossy? Strive to utilise your leadership skills in strategic ways.

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

Have you been feeling frustrated about the future? Does it seem as if your goals and dreams are permanently on hold? Things take a leap forward courtesy of Venus/Jupiter and the Full Moon so make a wish and then make it happen. But strive to adjust the way you communicate this week Goats. One size definitely won’t fit everyone. Some sensitive people need to be handled with kid gloves, so do your best to avoid controversial topics and obvious no-go zones.

AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

This week’s stars stimulate your eccentric Aquarian side, your quicksilver mind, and your tendency to do things in unconventional ways. There’s no denying you have fabulously innovative ideas about your future direction, but thinking about something isn’t the same as actually doing it. You’ll find the more mentally erratic you are, the more unpredictable the week will be. So strive to get the balance right between being intellectually agile and just plain hyperactive!

PISCES

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

What are your aspirations for the future? Are they ambitious enough? With some productive brainstorming and a practical plan you can get your goals and dreams up and running again. You’ll feel surprisingly positive on the weekend when the Sun stimulates your confidence; Neptune boosts your creativity; and delicious daydreams whisk you away into fantasy land. It’s also time to take the initiative when communicating with others.

lion Australians over the age of 14 plan to purchase a new car at some stage in the next four years. The study showed that the average expected cost of the vehicle was $36,840. Purchasing a new vehicle can put significant stress on your savings account. Could buying second-hand help alleviate costs? Let’s look at the advantages of buying a new car compared to buying a used one: Benefits of buying new • More reliable • Greater fuel efficiency • Higher sense of satisfaction and pleasure • More effective safety features than older models • The ‘new car smell’ Benefits of buying used • Greater variety in terms of both style and performance • Substantially cheaper purchase price • Depreciates at a lower rate than a new car • Freedom to buy from private sellers As you can see, there are many advantages to buying both new and used cars. Which one is right for you? Well, as you might have guessed, this will largely depend on your specific financial circumstances. Make sure you weigh up all the pros and cons.

However, it goes without saying that owning a vehicle can have an impact on your personal finances. From petrol maintenance costs,

We have previously discussed the two most common toxicities in pets – rat bait and snail bait. Today we will discuss some other things that may be lurking around the home that also pose a potential risk to our pets. Many human medications are highly toxic to animals and it is important that you never self medicate your pet. Even something as simple as paracetamol can be fatal to cats even in tiny amounts. Nurofen also poses a risk at high doses as it can damage both the kidneys, bowels

and liver. There are also many foods that are toxic to pets even in small amounts. These include chocolate, onions, garlic, avocado, macadamia nuts, raisins and grapes. Feeding fat trimmings (such as from chicken or steak) can also be dangerous and lead to a condition called pancreatitis. It is best to stick to pet foods and a mixture of

cooked lean meats and vegetables. Xylitol is a sugar substitute used as a sweetener in products such as chewing gum, some toothpastes and food products. While it is safe for humans, it is metabolised differently in dogs and can lead to low blood sugar resulting in tremors, seizures and even death. It is estimated that xylitol is 100 times more toxic to dogs than chocolate! We also often see sick dogs after eating various types of fertilisers and blood and bone products. In general, fertilisers tend to cause mild to moderate gastrointestinal irritation and can result in excessive drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and lethargy. Some fertiliser types such as blood and bone meal have large amounts of bacterial and fungal ingredients and can cause severe gastrointestinal upsets – these animals often need treatment in hospital. If your pet eats a fertiliser, it is important to seek veterinary attention immediately as there is a vast variety of different products with different toxicity levels. Got a question for our vet? LEGAL MATTERS

It seems like every day we are seeing new land releases and apartments being built. What you might not know is that these properties are being sold before they are even built, and this is known as “off the plan” purchasing. Off the plan purchasing refers to purchasing unregistered land or units that have not yet been approved by Council or registered at Land & Property Information. It is perfectly legal to sell properties in this manner and the most common motivation for buyers is that you lock in a price today and hope that the

value of the property increases throughout the duration of the project so that once settlement occurs you own a property at this worth more than what you paid for it. Here are some things to remember about buying off the plan: • There will be a delay between the time that you sign your purchase contract and settlement. This can vary from a few

months to a number of years, depending on the timeframe of the project. • These types of contracts usually have a “sunset clause” putting a limit on the time the developer can take to complete the project. Note that the sunset date can often be extended. • These types of contracts usually contain conditions saying that the developer can vary your particular Lot if necessary. • Unlike with a normal residential purchase, you will most likely not be able to obtain unconditional loan approval for this type of purchase. This means that if, when the time for settlement comes, you cannot raise the funds to purchase the property you will lose your deposit which adds some risk to the transaction. • In the context of unregistered land, it will usually be your responsibility to contact a builder and arrange for a dwelling to be built on the land. • In addition to the purchase price, you will usually have to pay a portion of the council and water rates charged on the property for the year in which you purchase it. Happy house hunting!

development of chronic diseases. She told an occupational therapy conference in Adelaide that children should be allowed to fall and pick themselves up and fail at tasks so they learn resilience. She bases her view on a multi-university study at 12 primary schools involving children aged five to seven and their parents. “If you ask parents what they want for their child, they will virtually always tell you they want them to be happy and resilient,” says Prof Bundy, who co-ordinated the research. “When they were children they often played with trees and water without adult supervision. But they will say they would never let their own children do what they did. “Usually when they stop and think about it, they realise it helped them learn to take responsibility. “Parents also need to think about what motivates them. Are they really worried about their child being hurt or are they more worried about what people will think if their child is hurt?” So stopping your child from jumping off that log may be teaching them a whole lot more than not falling over. Protect them, but don’t stunt their growth.

We usually say (as general guide) that your child has become a capable swimmer when they are able to swim 400 metres with good technique, without stopping, and without becoming exhausted. This level of skill may take children individual amounts of time to reach, but it establishes a strong swimming foundation. These swimming skills should then be retained in children over seven years of age, whereas younger children need consistent reinforcement to maintain their competency. It is important to remember that swimming is not just another option on the list of sports and activities available to children – it is an invaluable lifelong skill that may just save their lives.

As with any skill, it is normal for the child to go through periods of plateau, regression and developmental leaps throughout the process of learning to swim, but over time constant progress is being made.

Last week we raised the question ‘How long will it take for my child to Learn To Swim?’. Unfortunately, it is not a question I can answer simply, as every child is different, and learning to swim is a long term, ongoing process. Consistency is the key to the development and maintenance of swimming skills, so attending lessons should become an established part of your child’s weekly routine throughout their infant, preschool and early school years. Regular lessons all year round allow your child to

No parent ever wants to see their child hurt, but completely removing any chance of a child playing and getting a few bumps and scrapes can have serious longer term effects, this can lead to a lot more pain down the track than the tears shed over a grazed knee. Of course a parent is responsible for making sure any play is safe and suitable for their child. But can you be too careful? Children who are allowed to take physical risks learn resilience and become more active, says a report that

through his blood, shed on the cross.” Jesus is more than ordinary! Jesus is God come among us. To know Jesus is to know God. Jesus is the one who created all things. He has authority over all things and he sustains all things. The supremacy and magnificence of Jesus is breathtaking. However, it is even more magnificent, when you consider that this very same Jesus came to earth, lived among us and then through giving his life on the cross, and then three days later rising from the dead, he opened the door for any person to have the opportunity to be reconciled with God! What a gift – peace with God! No wonder Christian people throughout the centuries have celebrated and rejoiced in him. Today, may you know this peace and joy for yourself.

Spring and summer are my favourite times of the year when it comes to food. The days are warmer, barbecues are sizzling away and it’s a lot easier to make healthy food choices. So this week I thought I’d run through some of my favourite nutritious foods to enjoy during summer. Seafood Seafood is a fantastic addition to any summertime meal. seafood dishes are endless and tasty. As well as being delicious, there’s plenty of health benefits to including seafood, especially fish, into your diet several times a week. It’s high in protein, low in fat and a great source of omega-3 fatty acids. For healthy ways to prepare seafood try baking, grilling, steaming or poaching.

Salad Winter tends to be the season for baked vegetables while the warmer weather is a great time to get creative with delicious fresh salads. Though salads can often get a bad rap, there are plenty of ways to take the traditional mix of lettuce, tomato and cucumber and make it more appealing. Asian salads like Thai beef salad, or Vietnamese chicken salad with crunchy noodles are great options if you’re not a huge fan of the typical garden salad. With the addition of lime juice, fish sauce, garlic and chilli these dishes are far from boring. Another way to spice up your salad is by getting creative with your ingredients. Some of my favourites include pumpkin, haloumi, walnuts and avocado. Fruit Summer is by far my favourite time of the year for fruit. The shops are filled with boxes of juicy mangoes, cartons of fresh berries and delicious melons. There’s plenty of ways to add more fruit into your diet. Try freezing banana pieces for a cool snack, making fruit kebabs for the kids or turn those extra mangoes into fruity ice cubes to add to summer beverages.

Supremacy Funerals is family owned and operated by sisters, Donna Hildon and Belinda Erich. Donna and Belinda have been working in the funeral industry locally for many years. Their mother, Yvonne Meehan, owned and operated Lady of Grace Funerals at Emu Plains for twelve years until her retirement in 2013. They are well respected for their caring and compassionate natures as well as their knowledge in the industry. Donna and Belinda, as well as their staff, have good working relationships with local Churches, Clergy and clubs in the community. “We have been serving people of the Lower Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury, Western Suburbs, Penrith and surrounds including Warragamba, Silverdale, Mulgoa, Glenmore Park and Luddenham for many years”. Donna and Belinda are very proud of their funeral home. John Price & Son is the oldest business in Penrith having started in 1855 in High Street. The purpose built building on the current site, 44 Station Street, Penrith, was built in 1952 and has been recently fully renovated. It has its own chapel with seating for 200 people complete with large TV screens for Photo Story presentations and is air conditioned. It has a mortuary so that all mortuary care is done on site. Supremacy Funerals has its own fleet of vehicles so no hire fees are at the cost of the families. Catering for wakes is also an option at very reasonable rates. For any enquiries, please contact us on 4721 2020 or call in to discuss matters relating to your funeral needs.

NATHAN TAYLOR @natetaylor87

T

oyota’s Yaris has underlined its appeal among local motorists by becoming the first vehicle in its class to find 200,000 homes in Australia. The popular car has achieved the feat inside 10 years, outselling its nearest competitor during that time by more than 60,000 cars. Official figures confirm Toyota dealers have sold a total of 200,670 Yaris hatches and sedans. The selling rate means that, on average, local buyers have snapped up more than 54 of the compact Toyota cars every day during the entire time Yaris has been available in this country. The 200,000-sales milestone – which represents an average of more than 20,000 deliveries a year – coincides with the introduction across the Yaris hatch range of a new colour, Inferno (burnt orange), and the extension of Cosmopolitan (hot pink) to the top-of-the-line ZR. “Yaris is a compelling choice for Australians looking for a stylish, compact car that is fun to drive and offers a flexible, spacious interior and low running costs,” Toyota’s Tony Cramb said. The Yaris nameplate arrived in Australia in October 2005, replacing Toyota’s Echo which had been the best-seller in the lightcar segment for the previous two years. Echo was the nameplate used locally for the first-generation Yaris.

Sydney rivalry’s latest chapter The Wanderers face Sydney FC in the Sydney Derby this Saturday night NATHAN TAYLOR

he Western Sydney Wanderers will be hoping to win their first Sydney Derby blockbuster since the 2013/14 A-League season when they take on arch rivals Sydney FC this Saturday night at Allianz Stadium. The Wanderers haven’t defeated the Sky Blues since January 11 last year, when they narrowly won 1-0 at Pirtek Stadium. Since then, Sydney FC have had the Wanderers’ measure resulting in two wins and one draw from three meetings last season.

T

Speaking with the media on Tuesday morning, new Wanderers goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne said he couldn’t wait to play in his first Sydney Derby. “It’s a massive game, I’m really looking forward to it,” he said. “I’ve heard some great things about the Sydney Derby, so I’m expecting big things and an amazing atmosphere.” The 26-year-old isn’t a stranger to local derbies, having played in a number of them during his three-year tenure at Melbourne City. However, Redmayne is expecting Saturday night’s clash to top anything he’s been a part of before.

“I think with the passion and energy that the Wanderers fans have, I think it’s going to be better than the Melbourne Derby, that’s what I’m expecting,” he said. “I can’t wait to get out there and play in front of half a stadium full of Wanderers fans.” Western Sydney were finally able to kick start their season last Friday night when they held on for a 1-1 draw against Adelaide United. New Wanderers recruit Andreu scored his first goal in Wanderers colours but that wasn’t before he was part of an unfortunate own goal, which saw Adelaide take a 1-0 lead into the break.

Luckily for the Spaniard he was able to redeem himself in the 83rd minute, when he rifled home a great goal from close range. “I hope I don’t score an own goal again,” Andreu admitted. “I don’t score goals very often, so it was good to be able to change the own goal and get my first goal in the league. “I think we played a good game last week, we keep improving and it was good to get the one point.” The Western Sydney Wanderers and Sydney FC will do battle at 7.30pm this Saturday at Allianz Stadium. The match is live on Fox Sports.

tudents from Penrith Anglican College will have the chance to quiz local cricketing sensation and Sydney Thunder paceman Pat Cummins after ‘adopting’ him as part of the Thunder Local Hero program. The Big Bash League (BBL) club’s school initiative will see Cummins as well as teammates Mike Hussey, Usman Khawaja and Shane Watson swap cricket bats for text books as they go back to school this term and into the summer holidays. Now in its third year, the Thunder Local Hero program is open to primary schools across NSW and ACT, which last year saw nearly 200 schools take part in the free program. “I was born and raised here in western Sydney, so I feel very passionately about the area,” Cummins said. “To be in a position where I can give back to my community is something I look forward to doing and I was pleased to hear that the Local Hero program was returning.” Pupils will work through a curriculum based activity book, receive regular email and video updates directly from their adopted player and could even win the chance to have them visit the school

Meanwhile, the Thunder have announced they have bolstered their bowling stocks for the upcoming BBL season with the signing of international fast bowler Clint McKay. The Thunder will host the opening game of this year’s T20 BBL when they face cross city rivals the Sydney Sixers.

Cricket Another English import drawn to Penrith for summer stint NATHAN TAYLOR

he Penrith Cricket Club have continued their tradition of signing English imports with the recent acquisition of County cricketer Tom Kohler-Cadmore. The 21-year-old top order batsman and off-spinner arrived in the country earlier this month for a six month stint with the Howell Oval club. Kohler-Cadmore, who hails from County Championship club Worcestershire, is the third English player to join Penrith’s ranks in recent seasons following the previous signings of Sam Billings and Kish Velani. Speaking with the Weekender, KohlerCadmore said he was excited by the opportunity to advance his flourishing career in Australia. “When you play cricket in England you get the opportunity to either stay there and practice or come abroad, he explained. “Worcestershire looked for options for me in New Zealand and South Africa before choosing Australia. I was lucky enough to get a scholarship from the ECB (English Cricket Board), who sorted everything out for me. Kohler-Cadmore revealed he spoke with

T

ex-Penrith cricketer and fellow Englishman Sam Billings about the club before he arrived. “I know Sam well, so I spoke to him briefly before coming out, he said. “Sydney and Perth are among the toughest cricket competitions to play in, if you can get into a club in one of those cities, your home club is really happy because they know you’ll work hard and come back as an improved player. Kohler-Cadmore’s debut at Penrith was certainly one to remember with the Cats chasing down a huge target of 378 to defeat Eastern Suburbs last weekend. The Kent-born youngster managed to contribute an even 50 in his opening stand as well as take one wicket. Kohler-Cadmore said he hopes to bring plenty of runs as well as a unique insight to the team. “I think for a youngster I have quite a good knowledge of the game, I’ve lived and breathed cricket my whole life, he said. “I have out of the box ideas and don’t always go by the manual. I’d also like to bring a lot of runs to the club, that’s the main reason I’m out here. The odd wicket would be nice too. Kohler-Cadmore’s is expected to finish up at Penrith in March.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore has recently joined Penrith Cricket Club

he Penrith Panthers saved one of the biggest rugby league stories of the year until the off-season, sacking coach Ivan Cleary and signing former Brisbane mentor Anthony Griffin to a three-year deal. Our decision was that Anthony Griffin, and the knowledge that I had on him as a person and a coach, was the man that we wanted to run this organisation,â€? he said. “Anthony’s experience, in particular his background in developing elite junior talent through to NRL level, made him the perfect fit for this club. “We are certain he is the man to take advantage of the tremendous foundations established by our previous head coach Ivan Cleary.â€? It’s understood Gould had been secretly negotiating with Griffin, who was set to coach Redcliffe in the Queensland Cup next year, for some time. Gould revealed he spoke with a “number of peopleâ€? at the Brisbane Broncos about Griffin’s strengths and characteristics. Story continues on Âť p. 3

Hockey

Rising stars shine at Indoor titles Limited preparation no barrier as local sides perform strongly at popular tournament NATHAN TAYLOR

op five finishes in the Third Division competition provided ample proof of the quality of performance by the Nepean Indoor Hockey Association’s boys and girls teams at the recent NSW Indoor Hockey titles. Held in Gosford earlier this month, both teams went into the competition with limited preparation due to the timing of the tournament, and both teams fielded several players with limited indoor hockey experience. The boys team started confidently with wins over Southern Highlands (3-2) and Central Coast (2-0) on the opening day. However, the team stumbled against Southern Highlands in the return match losing 3-2 before regaining their mojo to thrash Central Coast once again 6-0. The strong round results qualified Nepean first in their pool, which saw them go on to defeat Dubbo 4-3 in a thrilling semi-final. However, Nepean’s boys failed to finish on top, losing to Newcastle 4-1 in the final. Unlike the boys side, Nepean’s girls had a slow start to the tournament and their lack of experience showed as they went

T

The silver medal winning Nepean Boys U15 Indoor Hockey Team down to Goulburn 6-4. Fortunately the girls were able to recover to beat Coffs Coast 2-1 in their second game. The team was then unlucky to lose 3-2 to Southern Highlands before finding form once again to beat Central Coast 4-0. As the tournament went on Nepean really clicked into gear and thrashed

Sydney 9-0 but, due to the tight competition and earlier losses, they narrowly missed out on a semi-final spot. Nepean managed to defeat New England 3-1 to finish the tournament in a respectable fifth place. Meanwhile, the Nepean Indoor Hockey Association received another major boost

at the tournament when tireless Penrith hockey stalwart Ryan Knowles was named as coach of the NSW U15 Indoor Hockey team to compete at the upcoming Australian Championships. The honour was a deserved one for Knowles who often spends hours each week nurturing youngsters.

Around the grounds CRICKET: The Penrith Cricket Club have pulled off a thrilling win over Eastern Suburbs in Round 3 of the Sydney Grade Cricket competition. After Eastern Suburbs posted a huge target of 378 on Day 1, Penrith’s first grade side resumed at 0/53 on Day 2 of action at Howell Oval. On the back of some excellent batting performances by John DiBartolo (100) and Matt Hopkins (93), Penrith managed to get the victory in dramatic fashion with a score of 8/380. Penrith, who now sit in 11th position, will battle the 19th placed Mosman in a two-day match beginning this Saturday at Allan Border Oval. BASEBALL: The Penrith Panthers first grade side are still leading the way this season after they defeated Baulkham Hills 5-2 on Sunday in Round 5 action of the NSW State Baseball League. The Panthers will now enjoy a well-earned bye this upcoming round before taking on Macarthur in Round 7 next weekend. GRIDIRON: The Nepean Ducks are still searching for their first win of the season after they went down to UNSW Raiders 17-3 last week. The Ducks will now enjoy a bye this weekend before regrouping to take on Newcastle in Round 8 next weekend.

For the Ramettes, Justine Vella won her first Women’s Medal while Renee Tomkins took home the Player’s Player Award and the club’s Best First Year Player Award. t may be the NRL off-season but that hasn’t stopped two Penrith players from taking the time out to put a smile on a special teenager’s face. Panthers stars Jamie Soward and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak made a surprise visit to Nepean Hospital’s Children’s Ward on Wednesday afternoon to meet local rugby league fan Jacob King. At age five, Jacob was diagnosed with a rare immune deficiency and has required monthly infusion treatment at Nepean’s Children’s Ward to maintain his health. Jacob turns 16 this month and will soon make the transition from the Children’s Ward to adult care for his ongoing treatment. To farewell Jacob, the Children’s Ward nursing staff enlisted the assistance of the Penrith Panthers to surprise the youngster at his 16th birthday treatment. “We’ve watched Jacob grow up on the ward and it really has been a privilege for us to care for him each month,” Nepean Hospital Children’s Ward Nurse Unit Manager, Shannan Waddups said. “We’re grateful to have the support of the Penrith Panthers in arranging this surprise. The Panthers have often come to see Jacob while he’s been undergoing treatment on the ward and were also here to mark his 100th treatment a few years ago.”
