Dramatic cliff rescue It’s an incredible enough story as it is: A 16-year-old boy sensationally winched to safety after falling 40 metres down a cliff at Mulgoa and suffering serious injuries. But when you hear about how the teenager was found by chance, crying for help and unable to move, you’ll realise just how incredible the events of Tuesday afternoon were. See page 7. 100 years young: Local resident celebrates an historic birthday JADE ALIPRANDI

@jade_aliprandi

ocal resident Edna Hunter reached a milestone most of us can only dream about on Monday when she celebrated her 100th birthday. Ms Hunter was presented with a certificate and flowers from Nepean Legacy on the day as well as a birthday card, with her association with the organisation dating back to 1974 after her husband passed away. The second youngest of seven children, Ms Hunter isn’t the only one in her family to have reached the big 100 after her older sister passed away at 103. “I don’t really know what my secret is but I can tell you I’ve never smoked,” Ms Hunter said. Growing up with her family, Ms Hunter spent some time with her other sisters working at their father’s hotel, while their brothers worked on the family farm. “You have to work hard when you’ve got your own business and we worked hard in the hotel,” she said. Ms Hunter married at the age of 27 to Reg who was a sergeant in World War II. They had two children together, Jill Murphy and Robert Hunter, and owned a poultry farm where the children sometimes worked.

Edna Hunter celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday. Photo: Megan Dunn Reg passed away at just 63-years-old after he suffered a brain hemorrhage. “We always got along really well and he was a good man,” Ms Hunter said. Her daughter Jill Murphy said being a mum is what she is good at. “She’s a wonderful mother and beautiful person and I want to thank her for her love, patience and understanding all these years,” Ms Murphy said.

Ms Hunter has recently welcomed her first great-grandchild and has another one on the way, due to be born in November. “I think she’s really looking forward to Christmas and can’t wait for the little one to arrive,” Ms Murphy said. “We all love her very much and hope we have more time to spend with her in the future.”

The Western Weekender will remain the home of Penrith City Council’s weekly news page and community newsletter. Council provides information to the community in a variety of ways including through a weekly page in a local newspaper and a quarterly community newsletter, delivered with a local newspaper. Some notices that seek community comment such as Development Applications and road closures are required by legislation to be advertised in a local newspaper. Council determined on Monday night that the Weekender would be the exclusive home of the weekly news page and community newsletter for the next two years, with a one-year extension option. “The Weekender has been the home of the Council news page for some years now and Monday’s decision reaffirms the paper’s status as Penrith’s market leader,” said Weekender Managing Editor, Troy Dodds. Five tenders were submitted for the advertising contract, including by Newscorp (Penrith Press) and Fairfax Media (Penrith City Gazette). “Following an initial assessment, the tender from The Western Weekender was considered by the Tender Evaluation Committee to be providing the highest value for money compared to the next on the ranking list in terms of effectiveness and prices,” a report to Council said. Council’s news page appears on page nine each week.

Media must play a responsible role when reporting on mental health I wrote last week about mental health and depression and how it was important that we all play a part in understanding it better and talking about what was once a forbidden subject. The media plays a significant role in doing this as well, but it must be careful and measured in its approach. There was a time when stories relating to suicide would simply be ignored or not reported on, and in fact some newsrooms still have that policy in their rules and guides. The stigma surrounding suicide, depression and mental health is slowly being removed throughout society, and in the process the media is generally becoming better at educating and informing the general public about how important it is to support and assist those who are going through troubled times. Unfortunately, clearly not everyone is getting the message about the huge responsibility the media holds in the way it covers mental health issues. Last Saturday, Annette Sharp wrote a piece for The Daily Telegraph that was, in my opinion, about as close to gutter trash journalism that you can get. Titled ‘13 reasons Jesinta and Buddy should postpone their summer wedding’, Ms Sharp wrote that celebrity couple Jesinta Campbell and Buddy Franklin should indefinitely delay their forthcoming wedding, largely because of Mr Franklin’s mental health issues. The Swans star missed the AFL finals and is continuing to receive treatment for those issues. Ms Sharp – who makes a living writing gossip columns for News Limited – thinks it’s her place to suggest the wedding should be postponed. Reminder – she’s a ‘journalist’, not a doctor. Now I’ll cop the old excuse that celebrities open themselves up to media attention, but given the very significant mental health issues surrounding Mr Franklin, it is highly irresponsible to write such a story. Irresponsible, offensive and dangerous.

How this passed through the editors at The Daily Telegraph is astounding. Ms Sharp’s reasons include that “this is Jesinta’s first long-term romantic relationship” and that “Jesinta may still be absorbing the news that mental illness can be hereditary”. “They’re young” is another reason, as is the fact that “Franklin’s career and earning power is less certain than it was a month ago”. And then there’s gems like this: “Because Jesinta’s appeal and allure will halve when she marries as half the consumer market – men – rapidly lose interest in their dream girl when she is no longer single”. Newsflash – Jesinta’s not single now, and what does what some bloke in the street or at home on his computer have to do with a young woman’s decision to marry a man she loves? Is Ms Sharp suggesting Ms Campbell’s primary focus in life should be pleasing other men? I don’t have the word count to go through the entire list and if I did, I’d probably need a new keyboard – the whole thing just makes me angry. And it makes me even angrier that Ms Sharp continued to defend herself and the article despite a barrage of complaints on social media. In fact, she even started playing the victim. The Daily Telegraph should be condemned for publishing the article last Saturday and Ms Sharp needs some very serious training on writing about mental health issues. Celebrity trash articles and mental health do not belong in the same category. The Telegraph should apologise and immediately remove the article from its digital archive, especially considering it doesn’t even carry any Lifeline or help numbers. As the major newspaper in Sydney, the Telegraph has a huge responsibility when it comes to reporting on critical issues such as mental health. Last weekend, the paper and Annette Sharp failed miserably. It is a disgrace.

enrith Councillor Marcus Cornish wants to see the end of secret deals and alliances between major parties that often dictate decisions and appointments at Penrith City Council. But others say it’s evidence that Council is making the best decisions for Penrith regardless of political affiliations. It follows last month’s Mayoral election at which Labor’s Karen McKeown became Mayor with the support of Councillors from all sides of politics. While Liberal and Labor Councillors have stood firm on their decision to work together and put party politics aside, some Councillors aren’t happy. Conservative Councillor Marcus Cornish said the “oligopoly” he believes is in place at Council is not good for Penrith. “It’s bad for democracy because when you have Labor and Liberal working together, it’s betraying the people who have voted for them,” he said. “When you vote Labor, you expect Labor values, when you vote Liberal, you expect Liberal values.” Former Australia First Party member turned Independent, Cr Maurice Girotto, said he did not support the deal brokered that saw Cr McKeown voted in as Mayor.

Ross Fowler, Cr McKeown said she is glad politics has taken a back seat in Council. She indicated she is looking forward to working with Cr Fowler, who is now Deputy Mayor, and drawing on his experience and expertise. It is known that several Labor Councillors have been impressed with Cr Fowler’s work in the last two years. Liberal Councillor Mark Davies supported Cr McKeown becoming Mayor, and said it is a demonstration of the coalition working together and putting Penrith first. Labor Councillor Prue Car said she makes no apologies for working with Liberal Councillors. “I know when I am out in the community, people say they want Councillors to work together for the good of the community,” she said. “After all, this is not State or Federal Government, where we have one party in Government and the other in opposition.” Labor Councillor John Thain agrees the electorate wants the parties to work together. “That offers us stability and a firm direction. The community is sick of this partisan politics, they just want people to work together, to get things moving, to get things done,” he said.

St Marys: Robbers leave pizza restaurant empty handed

Kingswood: Three men rob convenience store

Police are appealing for witnesses following an alleged attempted armed robbery of a pizza restaurant in St Marys late last week. At about 10.30pm on Thursday, September 24, a 27-year-old male working in the store was allegedly confronted by one of two males armed with metal bars after they entered the restaurant on Gallipoli Street. A female worker ran to the back of the store as the male intruder allegedly began demanding money and threatening the 27-year-old male worker. The armed pair fled the scene just a short time later, empty handed. Police say both employees were uninjured. Officers from St Marys Local Area Command were contacted.

Inquiries are continuing after three men allegedly robbed a convenience store in Kingswood late last week. Just before 4pm on Thursday, September 24, three men entered the store on the Great Western Highway and allegedly threatened the attendant with a knife. The trio managed to take a quantity of cash and cigarettes and fled from the area on foot. The attendant, aged in his 20s was not injured during the robbery. Police from St Marys Local Area Command attended the scene a short time later but could not locate the offenders after a search of the area. The three men are described as being of Pacific Islander appearance and were last seen running across the highway.

Kingswood Park: Woman takes anger out on ATM

Teenager arrested and charged over robberies

Police are still investigating after a woman allegedly conducted malicious damage at a Kingswood Park shopping centre. The 43-year-old woman allegedly was having problems with an ATM and her ATM card at the shopping centre at about midday on Friday, September 25. She allegedly threw a number of full drink bottles at the machine and also kicked and punched the machine. The woman left the location. The police were called and attended the scene. They later located the woman and she is expected to be charged after investigations are carried out.

A teenager faced court on Wednesday over multiple alleged armed robberies in the local area that occurred this year. Police allege the 17-year-old male was one of up to four offenders involved in three robberies at a service station in Kingswood in March 2015, and pizza stores in St Marys and Kingswood in September 2015. At about 8.30am on Wednesday, detectives from the Metropolitan Robbery Unit, with the assistance of officers from North West Metropolitan Region Enforcement Squad, executed a search warrant at a house in Tregear. The 17-year-old male occupant was charged after the search.

Hero pair save teen after dramatic cliff fall DALE DRINKWATER

@daledrinkwater

ittle did Blaise Steele and his friend, J.C Lardizabal know, that moments after saying they wanted to tick ‘saving someone’s life’ off their bucket list, they would do just that. The two men were walking along Nepean Gorge on Tuesday afternoon, chatting away and talking about the future. By nightfall, they had saved the life of a 16-year-old boy who had fallen some 40 metres down a cliff at Mulgoa. 22-year-old Mr Steele from Emu Plains said the universe aligned that day when they made a wrong turn and headed toward The Rock Lookout. “I then decided to show J.C this one particular spot, and as we arrived, we had the conversation about bucket lists,” he told the Weekender on Wednesday. “It’s real crazy, within a moment of saying ‘imagine saving someone’s life’, we heard this little cry for help. “I thought it was the universe playing a sick joke with the wind and that it couldn’t be real.” Mr Steele yelled off the top of the cliff, and soon after, heard the desperate cry for help again. “It was just instinctual. After we heard

L

the second cry for help, we didn’t even talk. We both knew we had to do something, and we just jumped in,” he said. Mr Steele, who works locally as a security officer and has been trained in basic first aid, called emergency services. “I needed to be down there with the boy, so I gave the phone to J.C. J.C gave GPS locations of latitude and longitude of where we were located,” he said. “He was handling it, he was thinking in such a clear-headed way.” Mr Steele wasn’t prepared for what he saw when he arrived at the bottom. “I remember everything... let’s just say he had extensive head injuries,” he said. “He was completely conscious and responsive the whole time. He just kept asking for help. “I was down there alone with him for an hour but he thought he was down there for a few hours before I got there.” Ambulances were called around 3pm, and medical crews treated the boy on the scene for head, chest and pelvic injuries. The NSW Ambulance rescue helicopter airlifted him to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition, after a delicate rescue operation. Mr Steele dismissed the suggestion that he and his friend are heroes, but said he is proud of their teamwork.

he final name for the Central Precinct between Jordan Springs and Ropes Crossing is still up for discussion, after Penrith City Council deferred the matter at its Ordinary Meeting on Monday night. A report was presented to Council that sought to amend the suburb names and boundaries within the former St Marys Australian Defence Industries (ADI) site. It recommended to extend the suburb of Jordan Springs to incorporate part of the regional park, and change the name of the Central Precinct between that and Ropes Crossing to Jordan Springs East. Deputy Mayor, Councillor Ross Fowler, expressed his disappointment towards Lend Lease for the new name, suggesting it wasn’t creative enough. “A significant portion of the Wianamatta Regional Park separates Jordan Springs from the new Central Precinct,” he said. “To call it Jordan Springs East is unimaginative and uninspiring.”

T

Cr Fowler made his own suggestion in Council, that he thinks is more creative and that people can be proud of. “I am going to suggest the name ‘Wensley’, just off the cuff, to be a little more imaginative in the name choice rather than consider it from a marketing view,” he said. “Neil Wensley happens to be a long serving General Manager of the ADI site, who managed the munitions factory up until when it closed in the early 1990s. I actually attended his funeral. “His daughter happens to be Penny Wensley who attended Penrith High School, and was a former Governor of Queensland.” Councillor Greg Davies jokingly suggested to name the area ‘Jordans Crossing’, but said a final decision should be deferred. Names for the suburb need to be in accordance with the Geographical Names Board guidelines, such as being short and easy to pronounce, which Jordan Springs East complies with. What name would you suggest, and why? Tweet us @wwpenrith.

The proposal recommends changing the classification of the land from Community to Operational to prepare the land to allow Council to consider opportunities that will grow the Town Centre and implement the adopted St Marys Town Centre Strategy 2006. These opportunities include the sale, lease and/or development of the land, none of which can be considered if the land remains Community Land.

School wins battle over development Happy outcome for all after Xavier College raised concerns over location of new housing DALE DRINKWATER

@daledrinkwater

avier College in Llandilo asked for a “fairly large buffer zone” to separate them from housing development in the north of Jordan Springs, and it seems they’ve had a victory. In May this year, private company Lend Lease provided Council with a plan to subdivide ‘Village 6’ off Ninth Avenue, Jordan Springs. The plan was shut down by Xavier College Principal Michael Pate, who expressed concerns with houses bordering on the school’s back fence. A large section of development to the south and west of the school boundary was then deferred for further discussion. Since then, Lend Lease has modified the plans and placed roads along the school’s fence. This plan was accepted by Council on Monday evening. In addressing the meeting, General Manager for Lend Lease’s Communities in NSW/ACT, Arthur Ilias, suggested to defer a small amount of lots to the west of the school. “I think there’s an opportunity here,” he said. “Lend Lease has worked closely with

X

Lots to the west of Road Reserve have been deferred, but the new road design along Xavier College has been carried Council and key stakeholders to provide the best outcomes. If they are addressed holistically it could result in a win-win for Council, Lend Lease and the broader community.” The new amendments also included reducing the number of residential lots from 215 to 203, changes to the staging of the development, and an amended biodiversity link.

“In the past three months we have responded to community concerns by increasing a biodiversity link from 60 metres to 100 metres wide,” Mr Ilias said. “Lend Lease is getting on the front foot... we need to ensure the community facilities are adequate and we respond to conservation outcomes.” On Mr Ilias’ suggestions, Councillor Greg Davies moved the amendment to the

overall report, to defer the development of lots 6011 to 6019 in the plans for further discussion. “We deferred them because Lend Lease came out and said they had a better solution,” he said. “Whilst I was happy with the original report, the offer put on the table is something worth pursuing and we could get a really good outcome for the community.”

Injured workers out in the cold after surprise compensation court ruling Local lawyer says situation surrounding injured workers is “unfair and needs to be addressed JADE ALIPRANDI

@jade_aliprandi

ccredited Specialist in Personal Injury Law at Lamrocks Solicitors in Penrith, Steve Groves, says several of his clients are among thousands in NSW that have been left in the lurch after a recent ruling in a matter of lump sum Workers Compensation payments that was put before the Court of Appeal. A decision was reached on August 27 this year after the Cram Fluid Power P/L v Green case raised the question of whether a worker who specifically sought lump sum compensation for permanent impairment before June 19, 2012, which is when a new amendment was made to the Workers Compensation Act by the Baird Government, is entitled to make a second claim after that date. The outcome was that the second claim that was submitted by Mr Green (the worker) was considered a new claim and subsequently, the client could not claim any further compensation, however, was told in a complying agreement that he was able to at the time of his first claim in 2010. In a letter to Mike Baird’s office, Mr Groves explains that up until the recent decision in the case, the provision of the amendment was interpreted to mean that workers injured prior to June 19, 2012, had ‘one more go’ to claim lump sum compensation for permanent impairments. He continues that after the ruling made in the case, the Court of Appeal has made the decision, through the case, that injured workers only have one claim for lump sum compensation ever, with workers who claimed before the change date to have already claimed their one time. “The problem here is the unfairness of the situation for the people who were injured before June 19, 2012; who had been paid out for a claim they made and were told that they could make further claims if any further treatment was needed, Mr Groves said. “The new system allows those who are

One of Mr Groves’ clients, David Dwyer, has expressed his frustrations. “People who claimed before the amendment date, like me, have appeared to have fallen through the cracks – it’s like they don’t want to know about us, Mr Dwyer said. NSW Minister for Finance, Services and Property Dominic Perrottet, said there has

been an improvement overall after the amendment was made. “In 2012, the scheme was in crisis with a $4.1 billion deficit and Premiums among the highest in the nation, he said. “The 2012 reforms have significantly improved the financial performance of the Scheme, which is now back in the black, allowing it to remain sustainable in the long term. “The most seriously injured workers are receiving substantially more benefits than before with the return to work rate in NSW now equal to the national average. Mr Groves said the problem is that his clients’ conditions have deteriorated but they are unable to receive support that they might have received from claiming a lump sum compensation.

Trial aims to answer key questions Nepean Hospital Specialist awarded grant to continue important research JADE ALIPRANDI

Roads warning NSW Police are urging motorists to remain vigilant on the roads this weekend and remember two numbers other than the grand final results. So far this year, 259 people have lost their lives on NSW roads, which means there have been 26 more deaths than the same time last year. With major sporting events taking place, the school holidays coming to an end and more people out and about as the weather warms up, the potential for a ‘perfect storm’ is forming on NSW roads. Operation Slow Down started at 12.01am today (October 2), and will continue until 11.59pm on Monday. Double demerits will be in place over the entire long weekend for all speeding, seatbelt and motorcycle-helmet offences. In particular, police will be targeting the major contributors to road trauma including speed, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, not wearing a seatbelt, driver distraction and fatigue. Both the NRL and AFL Grand Finals are due to take place this weekend and police are prepared for more drivers to make the long-haul journeys to Sydney and Melbourne.

@jade_aliprandi

Senior Specialist at Nepean Hospital has been awarded a grant to the tune of $3.96 million, allowing his team to delve deep into the next phase of an important clinical trial. Held in Canberra late last week, the annual National Health and Medical Research Council’s Research Excellence Awards recognises Australians who are carrying out new research to combat diseases and conditions such as cancer, depression and birth defects, with 16 researchers taking home grants for their categories. Senior Specialist in Intensive Care Medicine at Nepean Hospital, Associate Professor Ian Seppelt said what an honour it was to receive the grant. “I’m really pleased to have been recognised like this for the work that has gone into the trial but it has very much been a team effort,” he said. “I’m just one member of an international team and the award is recognising the fabulous team I’m in.” Mr Seppelt and the team are working on a treatment that will help prevent infection in critically ill patients on breathing machines, something that has been discussed for many years.

A

Associate Professor Ian Seppelt “It makes people nervous when they see people taking antibiotics or when they have to take it themselves as there is a risk of developing resistant bacteria,” Mr Seppelt said. “So far there has been no evidence of people developing resistant bacteria in this trial. “Receiving the grant just shows to me that people want an answer to this question and to see if it can be done.”

The project has been running for almost four years with a small number of studies carried out over the course of that time. The $3.96 million grant will now help see out the next phase of the research which will be a full country randomised trial in Australia, set to happen at some point next year if everything goes to plan. An estimated 23,000 patients will take part in this trial that will involve Intensive Care Units around the world.

Investment opportunities It is an honour to lead Penrith City – capital of the New West. The city is innovative, collaborative and committed. We are well placed to meet our challenges and I am dedicated to making Penrith City a great place to live, work and invest. We are opening the door to new projects, capital investment and partnerships to revitalise our City Centre. I also whole-heartedly support civic improvements to other parts of the city, including potential investment opportunities in St Marys. Investment in the New West will: • deliver jobs closer to home for Penrith’s 54,000+ commuting working population. • provide opportunities for quality inner city living. • create a strong day and night time economy and bustling City Centre. • attract people, jobs and retail spending to its heart. Last week I met with a delegation from Mentougou District of Beijing and the new owners of Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club to discuss development and tourism opportunities in Penrith. The meeting was very positive in

addressing the growing demand for quality conferencing and accommodation venues. Currently Penrith lacks large scale accommodation properties which in turn can affect the city’s ability to attract large scale conferences and events. Discussion with the new owners of Twin Creeks show they are interested in developing their property further which may contribute to the availability of quality accommodation and conference facilities in Penrith. Council is continuing to open the door to new projects, capital investment and partnerships to grow our City. I would also like to acknowledge the newly elected executive of the Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce. The executive of the Chamber is a committed group of local business people who work tirelessly in their own businesses and for all businesses in Penrith. I wish them well for year ahead and look forward to Council supporting the initiatives of local businesses in our vibrant regional city.

dear weekender... Dance festival death The needless death of a young man is a prime example of why Defqon.1 needs to be abolished permanently (Dance festival ends in tragedy, Western Weekender October 2). This event is nothing but a drug filled ‘party’ and you will never see a time when there will be no deaths and/or serious injuries to our youths after an event like this. Due to the incessant availability of dangerous drugs around the country now, the council, police and politicians need to stop this rubbish immediately and never let another one happen again. DIANA MCCARTY, EMU PLAINS

Drugs not wanted I think we just have to bring in more and more police, until the people get it through their thick skulls that drugs are not wanted at this concert. I’m sure most of the people just want the music. NERRELL LOADER, VIA FACEBOOK

Council should not have approved event The Penrith Council has blood on its hands after the death at

the Defqon.1 dance party. Despite a death two years ago at the same dance party, the Council extended its official approval for this toxic festival. In its tourism drive, Penrith Council seem happy to make Penrith a mecca for drug pushers. ANDREW MCCANN, PENRITH

Should we ban cars? As much as the death of a young man at the Defqon.1 festival is sad, there really is no blame to lay on the festival, those who approve it or others who attend. Accidents happen. Tragedies happen. Should we ban cars because of the road toll? ANDREW, VIA EMAIL

Same sex marriage The government are now reluctant to hold a plebiscite on same sex marriage, fearing that the current marriage debate causes pain to some young GBLT people. But perhaps they just wish to shut down public debate on same sex marriage because they realise that very few people want it. At the marriage celebration rally, held in Martin Place on

Sunday 20th September, we heard from not only a broad spectrum of religious leaders but also from the national president of the SDA, the largest trade union in Australia. Our Indigenous community were represented as well, outraged at the government’s attempt to redefine the age old definition of marriage. Even though, according to Beyondblue, the suicide rate of GBLT people is much higher than average, these rates have not declined in countries that have already legislated same sex marriage such as the Netherlands. The argument therefore is an erroneous one and should not be used to promote a political agenda. KIM FURST, PENRITH

provided the raw materials needed to build the M4 and M7 that we all travel on, product for the Olympics in 2000 to taking the product from the West Connex that will also be amazing to now being transformed into a beautiful place to visit and live. The work that has gone into this development over the past 30 or so years is amazing. It is sad to see the people move on who were part of that vision. A vision that included taking away but giving back in the regeneration of the original trees and plants, the work that the Aboriginal community has put in to ensure our history has been maintained and much more. Yes I am very proud! PETA DE BRUYN, VIA FACEBOOK

Lots of memories at Penrith Lakes

What’s next for Lakes?

Our family has four generations who have worked at this site (End of an era as Lakes enters new life, Western Weekender October 2). Our grandfather, my father in law, my husband and now our son. We are proud to have made our contribution to this remarkable place. A place that has supplied work for locals for a long time,

The next phases of this area have an opportunity to leave a legacy the region can be proud of or an eyesore development. If the parklands, cycleways and pathways, lakes and recreation areas are done well and the housing is not a postage stamp sized block dumping area we could end up with a truly lovely area.

Mine and the concern of many is the area will be turned into yet another poorly laid out mass of tiny narrow streets and a general bun fight to get around. The opportunity to develop this area utilising the natural beauty of the Blue Mountains background and the lake is enormous, please don’t stuff it. There have been some wonderful visions laid out in the past, hopefully some have stuck, hopefully the Nepean region can hold its head up and be proud of what we get and not just another developer’s s***fight. JEFF BROWN, VIA FACEBOOK

Suicide must be talked about Excellent article (Editor’s Desk, Western Weekender October 2). Unfortunately for generations there has been a shame associated with suicide which has seen the issue brushed under the carpet and not addressed, hopefully we start to first understand then deal with it far better moving forward. The mindset surrounding suicide is already changing which is a great first step. ALEX MCKENZIE, VIA FACEBOOK

ravelling 3000 kilometres from Darwin to Adelaide on $2 of fuel seems impossible, but not for Western Sydney University’s (WSU) Solar Car Team. From October 18 to 25, WSU students will compete against 30 other teams from around the world in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge. Computing, Engineering and Mathematics students spent countless hours designing, manufacturing and optimising their entry for the competition’s

Challenger class. The end result, a 150kg, carbon fibre car covered in 390 solar cells, is capable of reaching speeds of up to 130 kilometres per hour. The car is named ‘UNLIMITED’. For engineering student and team project manager, Anuj Verma, this is not just a race to the finish line in Adelaide, but a pathway to unlimited, renewable sources of energy. “Projects such as solar vehicle racing highlight advancements in solar energy capture and storage,” he said. “It also shows a future where living off the grid for consumers will be part of everyday life in the next 10 years.”

Community

It’s time to give Colyton a fair go New community group aims to remove misconceptions and promote what’s good about Colyton DALE DRINKWATER

@daledrinkwater

group of Colyton locals is ready to celebrate the suburb and remove damaging misconceptions. Team Colyton is a group of residents and local organisations who are proud to call Colyton home, and they’re working together to make sure the rest of western Sydney knows it. It’s still early days, so the group is calling out for more members to bring the community together and generate ideas for activities, projects and events. Team member, Siobhan Brien, has lived in Colyton just 10 years, but is very passionate about an area she believes is misrepresented. “Colyton is a great area and people just don’t see it. The group is looking at ideas on how we can strengthen our community bond,” she said. “We’ve come up with a stack of great ideas but we still need more.” Ms Brien said membership is open to anyone who lives in or has an investment in Colyton, even organisations and businesses. “You don’t have to come to every meeting, you can put notes down for meetings

Colyton resident Gaye Nyhuis has lived in the area for 50 years and said while they are still finding their feet and discussing what can be done, improving the safety of the neighbourhood is a top priority. While there are no definite events set by Team Colyton, they will be organising a walking group, and the Neighbourhood Centre will be having an open day on Saturday, October 3. The next Team Colyton meeting at the Neighbourhood Centre in Colyton is on Tuesday, October 13, from 6-8pm, and the following fortnight from 4-6pm. he Nepean Cancer Care Centre will soon be able to practice what they preach. The day unit at Nepean Hospital has just been granted $8,000 from the State Government to build shade sails in the outside eating area for their staff. Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Acting CEO, Clair Ramsden, said the grant is wonderful on many levels. “Our staff will be able to sit outside and not worry about skin cancer, get some fresh air and just enjoy being outside.

Plus, if staff are giving the information to their patients, then it’s really good for them to be able to role model those behaviours,” she said. Sean White, Radiation Safety Officer, said since the centre opened, their staff numbers have doubled to over 100 who need somewhere safe to eat their lunch. “The staff tea room has exploded in numbers, so we thought it was nice to provide extra areas for staff to sit,” Mr White said. “Our staff do so much in terms of getting money for patient related care, so I think it’s a nice way to give something little back to the staff who work so hard.”

artender at the Milestone Hotel in Kingswood, Shondelle O’Connor, is currently leading the pack in NSW in this year’s U.G.L.Y Bartender of the Year campaign, run by the Leukaemia Foundation. The campaign is aimed at getting the hospitality industry involved in fundraising for the Leukaemia Foundation in any way possible. Ms O’Connor, who has been in the business for almost 10 years, is fronting the hotel’s campaign. The hotel will run a series of car washes and some trivia nights as well as their Tuesday meat raffles with all the proceeds from each event going towards their end tally. Ms O’Connor said she is happy to be involved as it’s something close to her heart.

“My cousin was diagnosed with Leukaemia when we were younger and at one stage they thought I had it, Ms O’Connor said. “My uncle also had it so it is something quite close to me – the team and I all jumped at the opportunity to help out. The campaign is run for just over a month with Ms O’Connor’s goal set at $10,000. “If I become the top fundraiser in the state, I said I would cut my hair off, she said. Currently sitting at $4,650, Ms O’Connor is hoping she will maintain the lead throughout the campaign. A big trivia day along with other forms of entertainment will be held on November 14 at the Milestone Hotel with the team putting the call out to local businesses to dig deep and donate any goods, services or cash for prizes. Recognition for volunteer work Sallie Hammond takes home top award

Volunteers from the west were recognised for their efforts at the ‘NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards – Sydney Outer West and Blue Mountains’ ceremony with Fusion Western Sydney coming out on top. Volunteer at Fusion Western Sydney, Sallie Hammond, who has been at the centre for over 35 years, was awarded as the winner of the night and said she was humbled to be acknowledged. “It’s been lovely to be recognised like this but I know there are many other volunteers out there who work just as hard as I do,” she said. “Helping families in the western suburbs is a great thing and it’s great to know we are making a difference in their lives.” State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres was proud to announce the nominees at the awards night and said it is important to acknowledge their work. “It is important to acknowledge those who sacrifice their time for the benefit of the broader community and these awards are an excellent way to recognise these unsung heroes,” he said. Ms Hammond was recognised for the work she carries out at the centre including a program that’s been 15 years in the making that’s aimed at aiding the parents of western Sydney in being better parents, with a teenage version of the program well on the way. If you would like more information on Fusion Western Sydney, located in St Marys, and their upcoming programs, visit www.fusionwesternsydney.org.au.

HISTORY

Turning back Time

School site has incredible history Where Penrith High School now stands in the Penrith CBD once stood a remarkable castle referred to by locals as The Towers. Jade Aliprandi explores the history of this iconic local site...

P

enrith High School currently sits on top of what is a rich history. The story of ‘The Towers’ isn’t a complex one but one that holds the stories of many of the early pioneers of the Penrith district. Of the several old homes found around the Penrith area during the 1800s, few were better known than ‘The Towers’. It began in the early days of the colony when John Best, a convict and later a Superintendant of Convicts, received a grant of 440 acres, a property bound by the Western Road on the north, Jamison Road on the south, Bringelly Road on the east and Woodriff Street on the west. By 1824 the land was passed to an eminent citizen, John Tindale, who granted portions of the land to all recognised denominations and auctioned the rest. He retained the portion boarded by the Great Western Highway, King Street, Lethbridge Street and Doonmore Street. People will now know this land as the property of the Department of Education

The Towers. Photo: Penrith City Library as it is where Penrith High School is situated. Mr Tindale originally called the property ‘Hornseywood Park’. He then built a house on top of the hill that was known as ‘Hornseywood’. It had private quarters in the front and a kitchen and servants’ quarters at the back and was in the form of a ‘U’ shape. The school oval is on the site where assigned convicts ploughed the land to grow wheat, but the wheat farms eventually failed. The homestead and surrounding land was sold to Dr Alexander Barber and his wife Sarah in 1892. Dr Barber got straight to work to renovate the house.

Legend has it that the Barber’s travelled a lot abroad and after spending some time in Ireland they returned home with blueprints of an Irish castle to help him replicate the castle at his property. The castle was named ‘Tullaghmurry’. With locals unable to pronounce the old Irish name, it was referred to as ‘The Towers’. In 1902, Dr Barber began alterations to the homestead into the castle replica. The ceiling was raised, he exposed the property’s iron-bark rafters and built a facade onto the front to give the illusion of a double story. It had 13 rooms including spacious dining and lounge rooms. Dr Barber passed away in 1906 after a

reported failed operation, leaving the homestead in a semi-completed state. The homestead and land went to auction in 1924 by Rev. Hatfield Hall, the Anglican Rector of Penrith, who was given the property by Mrs Barber. The building was demolished with regret of the people who watched on as the homestead stood for many years as a symbol of the pioneers of the early district. If you’re ever passing by Penrith High School you can see the slope between the two giant trees which marked the entrance to ‘The Towers’. Is there a part of Penrith’s past you would love us to explore? Email your history ideas to news@westernweekender.com.au or call 4722 2998.

The purpose built building on the current site, 44 Station Street, Penrith, was built in 1952 and has been recently fully renovated. It has its own chapel with seating for 200 people complete with large TV screens for Photo Story presentations and is air conditioned. It has a mortuary so that all mortuary care is done on site. Supremacy Funerals has its own fleet of vehicles so no hire fees are at the cost of the families. Catering for wakes is also an option at very reasonable rates. For any enquiries, please contact us on 4721 2020 or call in to discuss matters relating to your funeral needs.

Following the steps of trailblazers

How to perfect your “elevator pitch”

Michelle Grice // Founder of Shel Design

lthough many would argue that there is still a long way to go before we see true equality for women, it does pay to look back at what some trailblazing women have done. It makes us realise how far we have come and what amazing strength they had and sacrifice these women made. For women in business, this ‘trailblazing’ has given modern women much more scope and freedom to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. Edith Cowan is one such woman, a face you would be familiar with on our $50 note. She was a politician and the first woman elected to an Australian parliament. But more importantly for the general female population, she was instrumental in gaining voting rights for women. She was a staunch advocate for children’s rights, campaigning for the establishment of children’s courts, as well as many other achievements. I am certain that she would have had many detractors and that every career move she made was met with opposition, but she pressed forward.

Maude Bonney is someone you may not have heard of. She was an aviator in the 1930s, who learned to fly secretly (but had a husband who championed her by buying her a plane when he found out!). What is awesome about Maude is that she didn’t try to change other people’s perceptions first before she sought to pursue her dream. She just found ways to do it without everyone knowing and then went on to set many aviation records, including the first person to fly from Australia to South Africa in 1937. A more recent trailblazer is Quentin Bryce, who became Australia’s first female Governor-General. She originally studied Arts & Law and became the first female member of the law faculty at the University of Queensland. She has been involved in, and founded, a number of women’s advocacy groups and seems to have done all this with grace and quiet determination. We have a rich legacy of trailblazing women in Australia who can encourage us to keep going.

With time becoming more and more scarce these days, we don’t have the exclusivity or chances to present ourselves to potential clients that we once did. Whether it be at networking events, coffee meetings or impromptu catch ups, the 30-second commercial or the ‘elevator’ pitch is more important than ever. The elevator pitch is a brief, persuasive speech that you spark interest in what your business does. It is more important than some people think. Some business people have so many products or services that they find hard to explain quickly. However, there is no need to be flustered or unprepared when someone asks the inevitable question of “what do you do?” You never know when the next opportunity might come your way so by planning and being calm, you can really help your image and business. Now no one business is the same as the other but there is a general plan in coming up with your own elevator pitch. You need to decipher: • Who you are? (the business details) • What you do? (the types of products and/or services you offer)

• How you do it? (how you deliver, create or develop your services or products) Be clear, concise and specific. Explain how the services or products can add value. Today, competition is pretty big in most industries so make sure you outline why they need you and not another business with similar offerings. As an example, here is some words I say when asked what I do: “I am from the local Business Enterprise Centre which specialises in giving business advice and training. We assist over 1,200 businesses every year using our experience, exclusive resources and different way of thinking which generate results for clients that aren’t matched.” That pitch often leads to more questions. I don’t give out all the details, not to leave them wanting more but to add an element of suspense and curiousness that it creates. Add confidence and enthusiasm in what you do and represent and you have a big chance of potential clients remembering you. Leave an impact and image on them that you would expect from someone delivering their pitch to you.

ound & Captured Photography happened purely by chance, good timing and a love of seeing little moments through their lenses. As photography students, freelancers and now a photographic duo, locals Barb Howard and Naomi Moore discovered they can be in two places at once – capturing moments from two different perspectives that a solo photographer simply couldn’t achieve. Barb and Naomi love to approach every new project with a good dose of curiosity and an eagerness to find storylines in everything they shoot. Their photographic style is a hybrid of contemporary documentary, lifestyle and photo-journalistic. What does this mean? Well, they believe it’s fresh, modern and very real. “It’s not always about the big shots, it’s about those moments just before and after that big shot. That’s where magic happens,” Barb said. Found & Captured Photography

will take care of your photographic needs with class and professionalism. Some of their services include: Mini Shoots, Corporate and Event Photography, Community Events and Festivals, Real Estate and Styling Photography, On Location Shoots, Market and Stall Holder Promo Shoots as well as Product Photography and Branding Shoots. At Found & Captured Photography, you will notice they do things a little differently to other photographers, especially when it comes to pricing. So, when you hire the experienced duo to take your photographs, you’re paying them to take your pictures. “You shouldn’t have to pay per print to buy them back from us,” Barb said. “Nor should you have to take out a second mortgage to pay for your images.” All of Found & Captured’s photographic packages include a USB flash drive containing all the images documenting your shoot. FIRE SAFETY

ith summer fast approaching and bushfire season already underway, it’s time to fire proof your house! In September, the NSW Rural Fire Service hosted a ‘Get Ready Weekend’ and if you didn’t participate, now is the time to do so with these simple but effective five steps: 1. Trimming over hanging trees and shrubs. 2. Mowing your lawns. 3. Removing all materials that have the potential to become a fire hazard especially any wood piles you might have stocked up over winter. 4. Remove dry leaves and mulch as well as any paint or wooden furniture you might have laying around. 5. Have an escape plan in mind and make sure the whole family is educated on how it works. Even undertake a fire drill! While we all assume our place is safe, in the past the Penrith region has seen how unpredictable fires can be. Furthermore, Fire and Rescue NSW recommend cleaning up around the yard, especially gutters. When it comes to those lazy BBQs around the pool, check hose lines and gas cylinders for any damage or leaks, and be sure to check if there is a total fire ban in place prior to cooking. For more information and to stay updated on the latest fire dangers, visit www.rfs.nsw.gov.au.

he Saturday morning Chocolate Wheel run by local Lions Clubs is a Penrith institution, and it’s reached an incredible milestone – 30 years. Men and women from the local Lions Clubs of Cambridge Park, Emu Plains, Penrith and Winmalee run the Chocolate Wheel in Westfield Penrith every weekend. Over time the Chocolate Wheel has become a fixture of the shopping centre with shoppers knowing the iconic cry of ‘watch your numbers’ as the men and women in the gold and yellow shirts sell their tickets. The Lions Club prides itself on its locally sourced prizes that include meat, chicken, fruit and vegetables, chemist products, donuts and Lowes vouchers. Barry Leavett-Brown, who is part of the Penrith Lions Club and has been with the Lions Club organisation for over 35 years, said the prizes for the Chocolate Wheel have primarily become vouchers over time. “We have more or less started to give out the vouchers now for winners on the Wheel which is a really good thing because they are able to use it

work carried out for the Mamre House project at St Marys, the Glenmore Park Early Childhood Centre, the Penrith Community Kitchen, and the Nepean Prostate Cancer Support Group. Numerous valuable student awards for various local primary and high schools are also handed out from the clubs as well as funding for various wheelchairs and specialist Hart Walker equipment. “Being able to help children is a big thing,” Mr Leavett-Brown said. “When it comes to who you donate to, children do have a premier position in the allocation of the funds as they have a lot longer to live than some of us older people but that doesn’t mean it’s just children who receive our help. “Anybody with a medical or physical problem can come to us.” So, next time you see the Lions crew at Westfield on a Saturday morning, stop by and purchase a ticket. The Lions Clubs are also looking for new members who would like to contribute something back to the community. They encourage any interested residents to contact their local club.

when they want – they have two weeks to claim their prize,” Mr Leavett-Brown said. The management of the Chocolate Wheel is also recognising the constant support of Westfield Penrith as well as the retailers who have provided high quality merchandise over the years and now, vouchers as prizes. Not left out of the recognitions are the public who the Lions Club say have consistently supported the club by buying thousands of tickets over the years. The sales from the Chocolate Wheel have helped the Lions Club reach a major milestone of over $950,000 raised for the local community. “It’s been very handy and we are really thankful,” Mr Leavett-Brown said. “The good thing about it is all that money goes back into different charities. The money raised is split between each club based on how much man-power you’ve put in.” The clubs then in turn provide this money as well as their help to other local projects and causes including Nepean Hospital’s Neonatal Unit, Children’s Ward and the Mental Health Unit, the life experience project Sailability at Penrith Lakes, the

heck out any gig guide and you’re likely to see a list of ‘vintage’ bands from the 50s, 60s and 70s who have either reformed or are several line-up changes into their careers. It’s a fact that hasn’t been lost on Dennis Locorriere, former lead vocalist and guitarist for 70s rock group Dr. Hook, who happily jokes about the phenomenon.

“It’s spawned this whole market now where all these old bands are getting back together because somehow they’ve convinced themselves that people want to see them because they’re old,” he laughed. “People don’t want to see you just because you’re old. “‘He was standing up for the whole hour’, that should not be a good review.” This down to earth and jovial nature becomes evident as soon as Dennis picks up the phone. “It says here on my sheet that you’re an entertainment writer so I’ll try to be entertaining,” he laughed. Growing up in Union City, New Jersey, Dennis never imagined that his music

“People don’t want to see you just because you’re old”

would still be resonating with audiences in 2015. “When we were doing all that stuff we weren’t even making a bid to be timeless, we were just trying to get through the day, and do a good record and do a good show and have a little bit of fun. “That was certainly true when we were playing in bars. I mean, when you’re playing in bars you play whatever songs it takes to keep the crowd from beating you up,” he laughed. While he counts himself lucky to have had the chance to travel around the world doing what he loves, Dennis admits there were sacrifices along the way. “A lot of us had families and we travelled a lot, 300 days a year, because it was the only way to do it back then, there were no videos or anything to send around,” he said. “If people wanted to see you, you had to turn up there. “It wasn’t always conducive to a home life and a personal life so there was a bit of a trade off.” Dr. Hook, originally known as Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show, were in the charts for eight years, with hit singles including ‘The Cover of Rolling Stone’, ‘Sylvia’s Mother’, ‘A Little Bit More’, ‘Sharing the Night Together’ and ‘When You’re in Love with a Beautiful Woman’. Since the band broke up in the mid 80s Dennis has worked as a songwriter, with his songs recorded by big names like Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson, toured his own solo work and recently released Whatever’s Burning Now, a book of poems and cartoons. This year he also released an album called ‘Timeless’, a two CD collection of Dr. Hook tracks that features both the hits and a few lesser known songs. “I wanted to put some things on there that might make people go, ‘wow, where’s this from’ and have them go back to the original album,” Dennis said. For the Australian version of the release Dennis requested an extra track, ‘Wild Colonial Boy’. The song was originally recorded by Dr. Hook to help raise money for an Australian children’s charity. “You don’t want to talk about it because it sounds like you’re patting yourself on the back but it was the reason we recorded ‘Wild Colonial Boy’ and the reason came good,” Dennis said. “I can sing it anywhere else and it sounds like a rousing folk song, but if I sing it in Australia it seems to go right to the heart.” After all these years, and countless other creative endeavours, the positive feedback Dennis receives from fans of Dr. Hook still surprises him. “I always wonder why people come and talk to me about Dr. Hook like it’s an ongoing concern, when in fact it ended in 1985, but it’s because the music is an ongoing concern to a lot of people,” he said. “It’s like a sense memory... you hear certain things and it takes you right to a place.” ‘Dennis Locorriere Presents Dr. Hook’ will be on at the Evan Theatre at Penrith Panthers on Friday, October 10 at 8pm. Tickets are $69.90. For more information or to purchase tickets to the show visit www.penrith.panthers.com.au or call 4720 5555.

TV NEWS

Ê It didn’t take long for former ‘Home and Away’ star Steve Peacocke to return to Aussie screens with the news he’s joined new Rebecca Gibney drama ‘Wanted’. Peacocke left the popular soap earlier this year to pursue a career in Hollywood but it seems home is where the heart is (or where the money is).

Ê Australian surfing legend Layne Beachley will narrate Channel Seven’s upcoming observational series ‘Beach Cops’. The series, which follows the police who operate along Sydney’s Northern Beaches, premieres later this month.

Ê After earlier reports it would air Sunday nights, it has been confirmed that new Karl Stefanovic panel show ‘The Verdict’ will air on Thursday nights from next week. Nine was originally planning to air ‘The Verdict’ at 9.30pm on Sundays but decided to rethink the idea after fears not many people would stay up that late to watch. Good call.

Ê Rumours are again rife that Channel Nine may bring back ‘Big Brother’ late next year. It’s understood Nine are unhappy with recent figures for the ‘Celebrity Apprentice Australia’ and are looking for something to fill its fourth quarter in 2016. Ê FOX8 has confirmed it will screen the 15th and final season of ‘American Idol’. Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr will all return along with original host Ryan Seacrest. ELEVEN has aired ‘Idol’ the last few years. The curtain is finally coming down on the show.

Ê Channel Nine has confirmed this Sunday’s NRL Grand Final between the Broncos and Cowboys will also be simulcast in high definition on GEM. The exciting announcement comes after Channel Seven said it too would air this Saturday’s AFL Grand Final between West Coast and Hawthorn in HD via 7Mate.

Ê Channel Ten will once again screen the ARIA Awards, to be held on Thursday, November 26 at The Star. No word as yet on this year’s nominees or who will be performing but you can usually expect one or two big names. Ê Foxtel has announced that it will close the Bio channel at 4am on November 1. Programs from the channel will continue to screen on other channels.

DVD Shaun the Sheep Movie Rated G // KATE REID

Based on the ‘Shaun the Sheep’ television series, ‘Shaun the Sheep Movie’ is a stop-motion animated comedy film that stars the lovable sheep Shaun from the Wallace and Gromit short ‘A Close Shave’. After years of routine and schedules Shaun decides that it’s time to take a day off. All he wants is a day to just have fun, but things go a little awry when his adventure ends up with The Farmer getting caught up in the Big City. Shaun is helped along by Bitzer and The Flock as they attempt to rescue The Farmer and return things to the way they were. It’s hard not to fall in love with this movie.

Though it’s targeted at kids there’s something so charming and delightful about Shaun and his sheep buddies. Even parents will find it an enjoyable ride. The stop-motion animation is beautifully done and it’s nice to see the technique still being used in a generation where CGI has taken centre stage. It’s also amazing to see that a film that has no dialogue can maintain an interesting narrative and keep kids happy throughout. ‘Shaun the Sheep Movie’ is a fun, well made flick that the whole family will enjoy.

1989 // KATE REID “What a coincidence, that’s the same name as Taylor Swift’s new alb... oh, wait.” That was my reaction when I first heard about the new release by Ryan Adams. Call me stupid but I didn’t immediately think that the American alternative artist would cover Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’ in its entirety, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. But what surprised me most about ‘1989’ is that it’s actually a pretty good album. Adams strips back some of Tay Tay’s classics, putting a folky twist on mega pop hits and in the process reveals just how great her songwriting skills are. My only criticism would be that I’m not sure how many people this album will appeal to. Taylor fans are much more likely to prefer the originals and if you’re an elitist Ryan Adams fan then you’re probably not going to like this album.

For someone who isn’t necessarily a fan of the detective and secret agent type movies, I liked what ‘Spy’ had to offer. Desk-bound CIA analyst, Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) volunteers herself to go undercover to gain information about a deal going on involving the sale of a bomb. The movie follows Susan on her mission as she travels from Paris to

Rome to Budapest, all with lame identities, giving the flick its comedy aspect. Australian Rose Byrne is somewhat of a stand out in the film as the nasty villain Raina Boyanov, who manages to obtain a portable nuke she wants to sell. She also makes holding a gun look like it’s an accessory. Jason Statham is a surprising comedic prodigy throughout the film with his tell-tale stories that places him in weird and quirky situations, such as posing as Barack Obama, to try and one-up McCarthy’s character as they compete to be the best agents. Miranda Hart adds that needed quirkiness to the film with her character Nancy who is the woman behind the ear piece when Susan goes undercover. Unfortunately not all of the jokes hit the mark, but it’ll still bring a smile. Be prepared to get a good look at someone when they get shot, stabbed or vomit as the production team have hit slow motion in these moments. While it adds something to the film, it certainly won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. A comedy with its own twist, like any good film, it will make you chuckle and laugh and also cringe at those unsightly

moments. However, it is weighed down with some long dialogue where the story and plot sometimes gets lost. You may realise there are some overused jokes and gags but overall, the film reaches expectations with a comedy meets action ride. It’s something different to the ordinary James Bond actiontype spy movies as the film is complemented with those comedic one-liners.

MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

Don’t get so caught up with the busyness of daily life that you lose sight of the big picture. By all means tackle the to-do list, but Jupiter urges you to expand your perspective; while Venus encourages you to smell the roses along the way. Communication starts to improve from Saturday onwards.

TAURUS

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Joanne Madeline

Moore

Spending time with children, work colleagues or friends is highlighted, but expect some confusing misunderstandings along the way. There’s also a hint of magic and mystery in the air, so make sure you stretch yourself in creative new directions. Next week you’ll feel emotionally disconnected from a loved one.

GEMINI

HOROSCOPES

MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

If you expect professional projects and domestic matters to proceed at a cracking pace then you’ll be disappointed. Everything will take much longer than expected … with plenty of frustrations and distracting detours along the way. On Saturday, Mercury [your ruling planet] finally moves forwards again.

CANCER

JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

Weekly posts at www.BohoAstro.com www.twitter.com/JoMadelineMoore Copyright Joanne Madeline Moore 2015

This week favours communicating, connecting and conversing with others in creative ways… as long as you communicate clearly and concisely. If you don’t, then expect cross words, crossed wires and confusing mix-ups. And don’t be too black and white about relationship issues Crabs!

LEO

JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

There’s the potential for power struggles, especially with authority figures. You’ll find the more demanding and Diva-like your behaviour, the more difficult Tuesday and Wednesday will be. On the financial front be careful with money, as you’re inclined to make extravagant purchases for purely emotional reasons.

VIRGO

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

By the end of the week the Moon, Venus, Mars and Jupiter will be visiting your sign. Which is great for all the Virgo-esque things you love to do – like planning, organising, analysing, sorting, studying, categorising and criticising. But don’t get so caught up in the detailed minutiae of daily life.

LIBRA

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

With Mercury reversing through your sign it’s been difficult to communicate, especially with loved ones. Your ability to express what’s on your mind gradually returns, as Mercury moves forwards in your sign. Saturn then squares Venus on Sunday, when a romance or friendship may appear to be unusually cool.

SCORPIO

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

The Sun links up with Pluto on Tuesday/ Wednesday, which encourages your Scorpio temperamental streak and control-freak tendencies. You’ll find the more stubborn you are, the more challenging the week will be. Compulsive thinking is also a danger, as you obsess over a close relationship or work situation.

SAGITTARIUS

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

Early in the week there’s a very fine line between illusion and delusion, so be careful. Use your active imagination in positive, productive ways – and don’t believe everything you hear. We all know Sagittarians are independent souls but don’t feel you have to accomplish everything on your own.

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

Being a bossy, controlling Capricorn will get you nowhere fast this week. In order for your close relationships to blossom, you need to give loved ones plenty of personal space and room to shine. You’ll find praising others is also much more productive than criticism. You may feel temporarily discouraged.

AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

Avoid making important money moves on Wednesday, when Mars scrambles your financial antennae. Joint finances will be especially confusing so leave delicate discussions about fiscal matters for a more suitable time. On the weekend, romance is highlighted as love planet Venus moves forwards in your love zone.

PISCES

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

Sensitive Pisceans often suffer from a lack of self-confidence. With Saturn visiting your public/reputation zone, it’s time to worry less about the way other people perceive you. Don’t allow others to define the way you feel about yourself! Learn to appreciate [and develop] your innate strengths.

Stamp Duty is a tax payable to the State Government in relation to certain transactions such as the purchase of real estate or the purchase of a business. Other transactions that might attract Stamp Duty are motor vehicle registration/transfers, leases and mortgages. It is important to remember, in the context of real estate, that Stamp Duty is payable in addition to the purchase price and you should budget for this if you are saving to purchase a home.

You see it after every game, the sports drinks are rushed onto the field and handed around ready for the post match interview, so all the kids and people at home know that’s what the elite sports people use. Funny thing is most of the smarter athletes throw them away off camera and plenty of studies have proven that sports drinks make absolutely no difference to performance. The commercials say their drinks have that extra ingredient which gives them that ‘scientifically proven’ edge. They’ll say anything from

Dump the sports drinks and stick with water

owner and manager of Fitec david@fitec.com.au

giving you an increase in energy, alertness, or enhancing athletic performance, to making you the most popular player and better looking. The hype of these drinks has reached astronomical proportions, and their advertising tentacles have reached down even to minor sports, schools and children.

There is a battle raging for consumers’ money with billions of dollars at stake. Public health advocates are pushing for a ban on sports drinks and flavoured waters in schools, warning that these drinks contain as much as two-thirds the sugar of soft drink, and more than three times the sodium, and don’t get me started on energy drinks! But the trade groups representing bottlers like CocaCola and Pepsi are ferociously countering the bill, and they have very deep pockets. They argue sports drinks are healthier, lower in calories, “appropriate” for high school students, and “essential” to young athletes. Just what “appropriate” means is in question, but seeing annual sales of sports drinks reach 7.5 billion in 2008 gives you a good reason as to why these manufacturers are lobbying so hard to keep them in schools. With soft drinks being phased out by most health conscious people, they are counting on these ‘sports’ drinks to keep people drinking rubbish and the money flowing in. When it comes to hydrating yourself after sport, there is no better option than water. And guess what? It’s cheaper, too!

Cats love to roam and explore their environment, however, cats that have access to outdoors will occasionally get into a fight with another cat. Cats are territorial animals and will fight with each other to defend their territory. If your cat gets bitten during a fight, bacteria from the other cats’ teeth will enter the wound and this may result in the formation of an abscess. An abscess is an accumulation of pus that usually forms as a result of a puncture wound. Cat fight

Nicole

Cat fights can cause major problems

Practice owner of Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic and the Western Sydney Cat Hospital

abscesses are most common around the face, shoulders or around the rump/tail. If you know that your cat has been in a fight, it is always a good idea to see a veterinarian immediately – early use of antibiotics can prevent abscess formation and also avoid surgery. What are the signs that my cat has an abscess? Abscesses usually appear 2-7 days after your cat gets

bitten. Affected cats will often be lethargic, have a poor appetite, have a fever and sometimes have painful areas on their body – this is usually where the bite wound is. Often you will also find a soft warm lump and sometimes, if the abscess is burst, you will find a small weeping wound. How are abscesses treated? Treatment generally involves surgery to flush out the pus and remove any dead/traumatised tissue. Sometimes drains are placed when there are large pockets and this allows the skin to heal. Antibiotics and of course pain relief are also used to keep your cat nice and comfortable. Surgery can often be avoided if your cat is brought in as soon as a bite happens. How can I prevent this in my cat? Most abscesses are caused by cat fights, so the best way to prevent them is by keeping your cat indoors as much as possible. It is also essential to get your cats desexed; entire male cats are very territorial and are much more likely to fight than desexed cats! It is also important to see your vet as soon as you think your cat has been in a fight. You can prevent an abscess from forming with early treatment.

Retirement mistakes to avoid

owner and manager Bank of Queensland anthony.walker@ boq.com.au

living. According to the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA), a pair of 65-year-olds who wish to live a comfortable lifestyle will require about $58,784 per year. To meet this budget, the ASFA recommended that couples should have around $640,000 in savings at the time of retirement. It’s a pretty daunting number, but for most Australians it’s very achievable. Let’s take

a look at three mistakes you should avoid if you want to save for a comfortable retirement: 1. Starting too late You can always apply the phrase ‘better late than never’ to developing positive money habits, but when it comes to saving for retirement the old adage of ‘the early bird gets the worm’ is much more apt. Why? The earlier you start saving, the more money you’ll make. 2. Keeping all your eggs in one basket Investing your money is an excellent way to prepare for retirement, but putting all your eggs into one basket is a recipe for disaster. For example, if you’ve invested heavily in units in one apartment block in a particular suburb, your asset would lose value incredibly quickly if the building was found to have some structural weakness. You may be forced to sell at a loss and continue working past 65 or enter retirement with little savings. 3. Maintaining the same lifestyle you had while working Regardless of how much you’ve managed to put away before retirement, keep in mind that you’ll effectively be living on a finite amount of money. You will need to change the way you spend. Plan carefully!

Grand Final week is always huge for rugby league fans! The whole season, the hard grind of tough, challenging games, week after week playing through pain and injury, all comes together in one, big, last game. 80 minutes and if you come out on top, you are the winners; the premiership team for 2015! (Who will it will be? Sadly, not the Panthers – at least for this year!) For this year’s winners, the victory lap is yours. You have the glory. You experience the cheer-

a vast crowd, too great to number, rejoices at the victory Jesus has won over death, the last enemy. This joyful crowd celebrates that in Jesus there is life, and not just life as we often think of it, but real life, eternal life, life that goes on forever with God. As the writer of Revelation tells us, Jesus’ victory means for those whose trust and hope is in him, “never again will they hunger... or thirst. The sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb (that is, Jesus) at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd; he will guide them to springs of living water. And God will wipe every tear from their eyes.” What a wonderful day! How good it will be if you and your family and friends are part of it!

ing crowd. You sing the victory song. You are presented with the trophy, a reminder of a great victory. In Revelation, the last book of the Bible, we see a similar scene. There is a huge crowd. They are also cheering, but they are celebrating a much greater victory. This scene takes place at the end of all things when

Your golden years will probably be spent pursuing hobbies, travelling, connecting with friends and family, and enjoying some well-deserved rest and relaxation. Of course, this is possible only if you have the income or savings in your bank account to support such a lifestyle. So, what do you need to do to prepare for retirement? While Australia has a fairly strong financial support system for the elderly, it’s unlikely that this alone will be enough to see you through retirement, particularly if you’re used to a higher standard of

Snacking can sometimes get a bad rap, but there’s definitely a place for it in a healthy balanced diet as long as you know what to look for. Grabbing a nutritious morning and afternoon snack means you’re less likely to overindulge at main meals, and, with the right choices, you’re more likely to get all the nutrients your body needs for the day. When choosing snack options keep in mind that while the odd chocolate bar is fine, it’s best to aim for more nutritious options for

Though I don’t believe it’s necessary to calorie count everything you eat throughout the day, it’s helpful to keep in mind that snacks should generally be under around 200 calories. Season to begin under crowd cloud TROY DODDS

@troydodds

he Western Sydney Wanderers will begin their A-League campaign next Thursday night with the club, its supporters and police on a major collision course. The dramatic situation threatens to overshadow the opening round match against Brisbane Roar at Pirtek Stadium in Parramatta. Since the end of last season, the Wanderers have attempted to mediate the relationship between NSW Police and the club’s active supporter group, the Red and Black Bloc (RBB). It follows crowd behaviour issues in recent years that have often overshadowed the RBB’s passion for the Wanderers. But it appears those talks have broken down, with the RBB saying it has been given a list of restrictions by police that it will not accept. According to the RBB, some of those restrictions include banning pre-match marches, the removal of banners and flags, zero tolerance for swearing including in any chants, no standing on seats or in aisles and OSG police to continue to be used in the northern stand. Police will also ask anyone using the megaphone in the RBB to meet with them prior to each match and that there be no “jumping or side by side movement” by the RBB.

T

The RBB has always been passionate about the Western Sydney Wanderers

On face value the restrictions seem over the top but police are clearly concerned that there could be incidents throughout the upcoming A-League season. Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas is not happy with the level of restrictions. “While the club will never tolerate flares or any form of anti-social behaviour, the club has opposed the severity of the proposals and what we believe is excessive and we feel compromises the enjoyable football experience,” he said. “Notwithstanding this we at all times maintain that Pirtek Stadium is to be a safe and family friendly environment. “The integral elements of active support will not be compromised and we will do everything within our means to ensure that the atmosphere of the Wanderers that we have come to know and love remains central to our purpose.” Part of the problem for the RBB is that while they provide an enormous atmosphere at A-League matches, mixed messages are often sent via their official social media pages and website. A number of images used to promote merchandise and the RBB itself depict anything but a friendly atmosphere. It appears that the RBB has the support of Football Federation Australia. “FFA supports Western Sydney Wanderers’ strenuous efforts to make sure the integral elements of active support will not be compromised,” the code’s governing body said in a statement.

RUGBY LEAGUE

Four players to depart Panthers FOUR players have officially been cut from Penrith’s NRL roster, ending months of speculation. The club confirmed earlier this week that Isaac John, Adam Docker, Ben Murdoch-Masila and Sam Anderson would depart the club to pursue new opportunities next season. All four have tasted first grade with the Panthers but none have been able to cement a permanent spot in the NRL side. Murdoch-Masila has already signed with Salford in the UK.

FFA Cup heartbreak for Wanderers THE Western Sydney Wanderers have been eliminated from the FFA Cup in heartbreaking fashion. The Wanderers held a 1-0 advantage over Perth Glory for much of the game before a controversial goal levelled the scores in the second half. The 1-all scoreline at full-time couldn’t be broken by extra time, sending the quarter final into a penalty shoot-out. The Wanderers lost 4-2 on penalties, with former Wanderer Ante Covic in goals for Perth.

Panthers stars Bryce Cartwright, Reagan Campbell-Gillard and Dallin WateneZelezniak took time out of their day to assist in a skills and drills clinic run by Panthers, FC11 and NRL Development. Junior clinics are a popular way for young kids to get up and close and personal with their NRL heroes, and there’s no doubt the concept will be back in a big way in 2016.

Two sides celebrate Grand Final wins All smiles at Western Districts after Division Three and Division Five teams score premiership success enrith’s hockey community is grinning from ear to ear after two Western Districts sides celebrated premiership wins last month. The Salie Christian coached team playing in Third Division recovered from an early 1-0 setback to crush Gordon North Shore 4-2, whilst the Fifth Division team scored a thrilling 1-0 victory over the powerful Ryde Hunters Hill club. Both teams have been acclaimed for their outstanding efforts this season as the Sydney-wide competitions are regarded as the premier women’s hockey club competitions in NSW – with 10 teams competing in each of six Divisions. Western Districts’ Fifth Division team finished third in the competition proper and was the perfect mix of veteran players and talented youngsters. Their combination improved every game and all players acquitted themselves in outstanding fashion during the Grand Final. Belinda Rushbrook scored the only goal of the match midway through the first half and play pulsated from end to end for the remainder of the fixture. Month with lots of fun for everyone on-site PGA professional providing swing tips. “You don’t have to be a golf tragic. There is mini golf which is always a bit of fun for everyone and we will have a free BBQ. Everything is free so there’s no excuse not to be there,” Mr Shineberg said. “There’s even a junior section for five to 12-years-olds, that has a soft rubber ball so you can have a proper swing off a mat towards a target.” The event is just one of five across the

state, and is part of an industry-wide national initiative to drive participation growth and promote the game of golf. “There are activities like this happening all around Australia on golf courses and cities throughout the month,” Mr Shineberg said. “There are many Golf Clubs within the Penrith LGA so this will be a good opportunity to promote them.” For more information about Golf Month during October, visit www. golfmonth.com.au.

CRICKET: The Sydney Thunder Women’s Big Bash League team have received a huge boost with the club securing the signature of impressive all-rounder Nicola Carey. Carey, a regular member of the Lend Lease Breakers squad during their WT20 and WNCL triumphs in 2014/15, is a valuable addition to the Thunder Nation for WBBL01. The 22-year-old was her team’s most economical bowler during the 10th straight WNCL title and is also a handy middle order batter, averaging 24.25 last WNCL season. She has also represented Australia, touring Sri Lanka twice in 2015.

BASEBALL: The Penrith Panthers first grade side have continued their strong start to the season, defeating Blacktown Workers 10-2 in the latest round of the NSW State Baseball League. Penrith will now take on the Cronulla Sharks in Round 4 this weekend.

Playing in a One Day game at Hurstville Oval, St George batted first scoring a decent 5/261 after 50 overs. When Penrith went in to bat later that day, they weren’t able to get close to St George’s target and were bowled out for a measly 165 runs. Best with the bat for the Cats was Luke Morrissey who brought up his half century with an even 50. Penrith will now look to regroup when they take on fellow last start losers North Sydney this Saturday morning at Tunks Park.

he Penrith Panthers will be hoping to secure their second premiership in three years when they tackle the Manly Sea Eagles this Sunday afternoon in the Holden Cup Grand Final. The minor premiership-winning Panthers qualified for their second NYC decider following a 50-16 thrashing of the New Zealand Warriors last Friday night at Suncorp Stadium. The Panthers will now take on Manly, who caused a huge upset last Saturday night when they pipped year-long competition favourites North Queensland 25-24. Speaking with the Weekender, Panthers coach Cameron Ciraldo said preparations for this weekend’s decider at ANZ Stadium were running according to plan. “Preparations are going good, we’ve named the same team that took on the Warriors and we’ll be doing everything the same as how we’ve done all year,” he said. “What’s worked for us so far with our preparation will hopefully work for us again this week. It will be business as usual.” This Sunday’s Grand Final will mark the fourth time the Panthers and the Sea Eagles will do battle this season, with Penrith run-
