Captain signs off
End of an era as Wakeling family sells Nepean Belle

he charming, old-world Nepean Belle Paddlewheeler that trundles its way up and down the banks of the Nepean River is an icon of the region. But after 31 years at the helm, owners John and Helen Wakeling have sold the highly successful tourist business to local couple Carol and Chris Bennett. “The business was sold largely because of mum and dad’s wishes to retire. The boys (brothers Simon, David and Luke) are all doing their own things these days so it made sense,” explained son, David Wakeling. Built by captain John and his wife on the banks of the river, the Belle was launched on October 22, 1982. The idea for the boat was inspired by John’s discovery of the spectacular and relatively unknown Nepean Gorge in the 1970’s after the family moved to Emu Plains. “The fi rst time I ever went up the Nepean Gorge on one of our little motor boats, I just couldn’t wait to get Helen up there and show her,” he said. “The Nepean Belle took about five years to develop from concept to reality with lots of difficulties to overcome such as the creation of a slipway to protect the vessel from floods. We were effectively more than broke by the time we started cruises on the Nepean Belle – so we had no choice but to make it a goer!” The family grew the business, launching their second vessel, the Penrith Platypus Cruiser in 2000. More recently the company built a smaller, faster water-taxi style vessel called the Nepean River Explorer. But John Wakeling very much welcomes the opportunity to take a well-earned rest. “I know I won’t be able to go on forever, and there are still a couple of things that I would like to do while Helen and I are still in reasonable health. Some more time with the grandkids and a bit of an extended holiday for instance,” he said. And boating won’t be out of the picture. “I’d love to take a ride on a Mississippi River Paddlewheeler and maybe a River Cruise through Europe.” David Wakeling said the family would help the new owners through a transition period in the lead-up to the busy Christmas period. “The Bennetts are already involved but we will

After a pursuit along the M4 and a short foot chase, offic ers arrested the 30-year-old man on the motorway at St Clair. A 44-year-old woman, who was driving the car, was also arrested and charged with a range of offences.

Grandmother says Cash Converters needs to be held accountable for loan rates Julie Gray needed cash to get by, but she says Cash Converters took advantage of h er wh en s he bor rowed m oney b y hitting her with huge interest charges...

grandmother from Cambridge Park is taking payday lender and pawn broker Cash Converters to the courts over claims she was illegally exploited by exorbitant interest charges. Pensioner, Julie Gray, is heading a class action with the help of Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, after she was made to pay a number of fees on personal loans and cash advances that allegedly should have been calculated as part of interest rate charges – which are capped at 48 per cent in NSW on consumer credit. “I could not believe how much Cash Converters managed to make me pay for their short term loans, Ms Gray said. “I was desperate and needed cash to get by, but Cash Converters took advantage of me like they take advantage of lots of people. Someone has to stand up and make this company accountable. “It was a really difficult time and it felt like I was in a debt trap. I only realised what was happening after I visited a fi nancial counsellor. Ms Gray said she wants to stop other people ending up in the same position. Ben Slade, NSW Managing Principal of Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, says that despite laws in NSW capping interest rates at 48 per cent on consumer credit, Cash Converters borrowers have paid interest up to as high as 633 per cent. “Those doing it toughest, living hand to mouth, have been hung out to dry by Cash Converters, so we will commence two class actions against the company, claiming around $40 million in compensation for about 50,000 NSW

citizens, Mr Slade said. Miranda Nagy, Maurice Blackburn Special Counsel who is also working on the case, says Cash Converters contrived to avoid the interest rate cap in NSW by having borrowers sign a separate document that committed them to repaying their loans early and incurring huge additional fees.
“Th is practice was deliberate, systemic and unconscionable – a callous exploitation of some of the most vulnerable in our community, Ms Nagy said. But Cash Converters, which has a Penrith CBD shop, says the claims are completely false. “The Company is confident that the fees
have been properly levied and are completely lawful, said company secretary, Ralph Groom. “The claimed amount of these total fees... seems vastly inflated given that NSW is the smallest state by number of Cash Converters stores (18 stores). “The action is based on a flawed proposition and will be defended.

Opinion
www.westernweekender.com.au
I
’ve got to admit, I didn’t do all that well in my Higher School Certific ate. Partly because my head was stuck in Big League rather than a text book, but also because at 18-years-old I hadn’t completely figured out what I wanted to do with my life. I was a chubby, pimple-faced kid who talked to myself a fair bit – I had plenty more to be concerned about than what UAI I was going to end up with. (Not much has changed by the way – just the pimple-faced bit.) Right now, students across the local area are sitting their HSC. For some, the belief is that the result means the world; that a single number defi nes who they are. That’s just plain wrong but I’ll get back to that in a moment. For others, it is simply the last bit of schooling they have to do before they can disappear into the real world and fin ally be out of the playground. The HSC needs to cater for the most dedicated student in the school and for the least dedicated. In short, it has to be everything to everyone. And while for some it will indeed determine their future path, it can never defi ne your overall journey or destroy your hopes and dreams. I really, really hope the kids who are sitting exams this week realise that. Because over the past few days we’ve seen all the usual stories. Students stressed, last minute cram sessions, the most important week of their lives, post-exam opinions... the list goes on. Of course, the annual dramas of some students missing exams because a bus has gotten lost or a train has broken down have been in full swing as well. I admit I’ve been lucky in my career thus far. I’m a bit of a logical thinker and my nature is one that takes things on face value, which all helps in my chosen path. There’s no way I could have survived years of university and no way any amount of study would have seen a HSC result resembling anything that would be considered worthy of a celebration. I’m just not that kind of guy. I’ll read every story in the Herald, Telegraph and The Australian every morning but ask me to write a 5,000 word essay on Shakespeare and you may see a blank response on my face.

We’re all different. All of the students taking the HSC this week are all different, too. For the most part, they have hardly began to live let alone determine where exactly their future lies. There will be exceptions of course. We all wanted to be doctors at six-years-old but some legitimately still hold that dream and hence, the results of the HSC are in the fi rst instance exceptionally important. But in trying to cater for everyone, is the HSC really only catering for a minority and not doing anyone any real good, apart from creating a culture of stress and panic among impressionable teenagers? Given the enormous changes in the way we educate ourselves these days, particularly when it comes to technology, I often wonder if the HSC isn’t a little out-dated. And given the changing nature of the job market and the types of jobs out there, has the HSC really ever undergone a serious review, or major reforms, to ensure it is relevant and up to date? Don’t get me started on how the fin al results are worked out, either, as it’s a rather complicated set up that again doesn’t really give a true indication of a student’s abilities and where their futures may be. I’ll be honest with you: for me, the HSC was nothing more than a glorified full stop on my high school life. And that’s nothing against the school, my teachers or my peers because I had a wonderful time at school and it’s my own fault I didn’t pay more attention. I did most of my growing up in the fir st couple of years out of school. My fi rst boss (who hired and fi red me in the space of eight months) taught me more about the real world than any text book ever could have. For others, growing up is done much earlier. For some, it’s older. Generally, circumstances will dictate this and later in life, you’ll be able to pinpoint moments of growth. To the students out there who will fi nish exams this month and then panic about the results, I can only say this: calm down. Do not for a second let a number define you. Just 13 years later, I wouldn’t even be able to fi nd my HSC results, let alone allow them to direct my future.

SITA, the contractor who was responsible for upgrading 20 ovals with new top dressing by mid-2014, is investigating how fragments of glass, crockery and stone managed to contaminate the soil. Cook Park in St Marys, Cook and Banks Reserve in St Clair, Allsopp Oval in Cambridge Park and Ched Towns Reserve in Glenmore Park have all been closed and top dressing of other fields has been suspended. “The closure is a major inconvenience for sporting teams and locals, but nothing’s more important here than public safety, said Penrith Mayor, Ross Fowler. “We inspected, closed and signposted the grounds as a matter of priority as soon as we discovered the problem. Council has been in discussion with SITA in an attempt to establish both what caused the issue and to put in place appropriate procedures to restore the playing fields to a safe and fit-for-play state. SITA has agreed to reconstruct each of the playing fields at their cost, with work scheduled to commence this week. Political pay day Though the Federal Election is done and dusted, the major political parties were last week still celebrating as the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) announced that $56 million would be paid in public funding for the election. Since 1984, a system has been in place where donations of private funding must be disclosed, but all candidates who contest the Federal Election are also entitled to public funding if they secure enough votes. Under election laws, candidates that receive more than four per cent of fir st preference votes are entitled to an amount per vote, paid to the political party they represent or themselves if they are independent. Th is year, indexed to reflect the Consumer Price Index, each fir st preference vote was worth $2.488. MP for Lindsay, Fiona Scott, had 40,882 fi rst preference votes and so earned the Liberal Party a public funding payment of $101,714.42. Former Lindsay MP, Labor’s David Bradbury, received 34,212 votes, earning Labor $85,119.46. Palmer United’s Andrew Wilcox contributed $11,238.30 to the Party.

he Penrith Valley Business Enterprise Centre’s (Penrith BEC) Marketing and Business Manager and SmallBiz Connect Advisor, Michael Todd, has won the award for the Best Business Enterprise Centre Mentor in Australia at the 2013 Small Business Development Conference in Sydney. The award, which is chosen as a result of clients nominating their BEC mentor followed by an application process, was presented to Mr Todd (also a Weekender business columnist) as a result of his outstanding service. Th is award has come after the Penrith BEC last year won the award for the Best Metropolitan Business Enterprise Centre in Australia. Mr Todd said it is great to have won the award as the standard of BECs around Australia is very high. “The BEC network around Australia is so strong, with over 100 Centres around Australia delivering a variety of services to both small and big businesses. To be recognised as the best is truly humbling and I am so proud to have won this award as a result of helping clients achieve their business goals, Mr Todd said. “Our three BECs, in Penrith, Hawkesbury and Blue Mountains, are all performing well and it’s all because of our strong staff and our constant work to continually raise the bar... We all work so hard to maintain our high level of service and each and every one of them are a part of this acknowledgement. I also want to thank our Board members, sponsors and

HAVE YOU REGISTERED YOUR POOL? Swimming pool safety is a vital issue that affects the whole community. Every year 60 children in NSW are admitted to hospital following a near-drowning experience. For this reason the State Government has introduced legislation where homeowners who have a pool or spa must register it by 29 October 2013 or face paying a fine. To quickly and easily register your pool for free go to www.swimmingpoolregister.nsw.gov.au if you need help with this, you can complete your registration at Council for a fee of $10 per application. As a further measure to help pool and spa owners meet the 29 October 2013 deadline, Council will open its doors to those without internet access and waive the $10 processing fee on 23 and 24 October between 8.30am and 4pm. Should you require a compliant CPR chart, these are available for purchase at Council’s front counter. A Swimming Pool Barrier Inspection Program is also currently on exhibition at the Penrith Civic Centre and can also be accessed via Council’s website. Just click on the heading which reads ‘Swimming pool barrier inspection program’. For further information go to www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au or call the Swimming Pool Compliance Team on 4732 7897.

MAYOR’S NEWS ROSS FOWLER
Rose Spring Show I encourage anyone who has an interest in roses to visit the Paceway this weekend. We are delighted to host the Australian and NSW Rose Spring Show here in Penrith. Th is annual free show, which goes to a different state each year, has been organised by local resident and National Rose Society president Glynis Hayne. You’ll see the best roses in Australia, cared for by everyday home gardeners who enjoy exhibiting and competing. The show coincides with the Rose Society of NSW’s centenary year, and will be selling the signature rose for the celebrations called “100 Not Out”. If you have any burning questions about roses, this is where you’ll get your answers. Th is is an exciting opportunity for local gardeners, and it will be a long time before we get the opportunity to see this standard of roses so close to home. Get out there and experience it at the Paceway. You certainly won’t regret going along.

he State Government has released details of its planned upgrade of the intersection at Roper Road and the M4 Motorway. The Colyton intersection is a renowned bottleneck for traffic accessing the M4 Motorway however, the local community is being invited to have its say on planned road improvements to the southbound right turn lane on Roper Road. “Roads and Maritime Services is proposing to extend the southbound right turn lane at the intersection of Roper Road and M4 Motorway at Colyton to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow,” said Mulgoa MP, Tanya Davies. The roadworks would total $1.5 million funded through the NSW Government’s Sydney Congestion Treatments Program and would include a right turn lane extension onto the M4 Motorway all the way to Carlisle Avenue to reduce the crash risk by ensuring vehicles do not block the through lane. A no stopping zone southbound from Carlisle Avenue to the M4 Motorway on-ramp would be installed and a bus zone near the pedestrian refuge would be implemented. A new pedestrian footpath and kerb on the eastern side of Roper Road would also be installed as part of the upgrade. Ms Davies said the upgrade would additionally include a new road surface,

Investigation into fires two years apart
Compiled by Katherine Tweed
Three out of four: Woman recaptured A woman has been recaptured exactly a month after she went missing from the Bolwarra Transitional Centre at Emu Plains. The 30-year-old was one of four women who went missing from the Centre on Saturday, September 14 and she is the third to have been found. At about 5pm on Monday, October 14, police stopped a car being driven south along the Pacific Highway at Wardell. The woman was in the passenger seat. One woman, Deanne Daley, 20, is still missing. Contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Social media catches woman: Offensive video

St Marys property has been the scene of two similar, allegedly deliberately lit fire s, prompting local police to form Strike Force Ragle in the hopes of fi nding those responsible. The fi res, which were lit almost two years apart, both started with an explosion and were followed by a blaze that completely destroyed each home on the property at the time. It was in the early hours of Thursday, October 6, 2011 when residents in Thomas Street, St Marys were woken by a loud explosion. A blaze broke out in the unoccupied home and was extinguished by Fire and Rescue NSW before St Marys Police established a crime scene. Evidence was collected, leading police to believe the fi re had been deliberately lit. Just under two years later, after the property had been sold and new owners had demolished the fir e
damaged house, a new home was completed on the property. In the early hours of Monday, July 1, residents were for the second time awoken by an explosion and subsequent blaze at the property. Again, there was no-one home at the time of the fi re however, the property was badly damaged. “The damage caused runs into many hundreds of thousands of dollars,” said St Marys LAC Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Barry Vincent. “The owners of the property are distraught over the damage to their house. The fi nancial costs are compounded by the stress of seeing a newly built home destroyed in these circumstances.” A new investigation commenced and following forensic examination, detectives are hopeful of a breakthrough when DNA and fi ngerprint results are returned. Due to a number of eye-witness accounts, offic ers say a number of people and vehicles were seen leaving the vicinity after both fires. Do you know more? Call 1800 333 000.
A woman was arrested at a Colyton address after she was fil med by an unknown person allegedly behaving in an offensive manner on a train near Blacktown. Between 8pm and 9pm on Friday, May 31, the accused was fi lmed swearing at an unseen male commuter and threatening to organise for someone to assault him. The four-minute long video was uploaded to a number of social media sites on June 3, and the following day the incident was reported to police via private message on the NSW Police Force Facebook page. An investigation was launched by the North West Police Transport Command and following extensive enquiries, police attended a Colyton residence on Wednesday, September 25 and interviewed a 19-year-old woman. She has been served with a future court attendance notice for behaving in an offensive manner in a public passenger vehicle. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

English out of the way but exams roll on for Higher School Certificate students
T
CASSANDRA O CONNOR
his week the annual Higher School Certificate examinations began, with over 61,500 students across the state sitting the compulsory English paper. Local libraries and schools have been full of students preparing last minute for the exams, which determine what university courses each student is eligible to enrol in. The fi rst English paper was conducted on Monday and the second on Tuesday afternoon, with mathematics to be tested next week. Penrith High School Principal, John Elton, said so far the exam papers had been very fair and that students were feeling prepared for the four-week examination period. “Over the holidays we had teachers and study groups in here almost every day, which was great to see, and the students have been feeling good about their exam preparation,” he said. Of the English paper, the only compulsory subject for Year 12 students, Mr Elton said students were happy with the questions. “The paper seemed very fair with no real surprises. The kids all came out relatively happy with the paper, which is great because it means everyone is off to a good start and we hope that positive attitude continues,” he said. With English and many language exams already completed, week two of the HSC

Why on Earth does it need a $4 million upgrade (Court adjourned for six months, Western Weekender October 18). Seriously most people who use it are scumbags anyway. My affi nity is with Penrith because I live here, and I am less likely to be as passionate about the team if the name of the city the side represents is taken further and further away from us. Overnight overhaul complete Finishing touches being put on “pop up park” with Monday opening planned
O
CASSANDRA O'CONNOR
ver the last five days, High Street has undergone an amazing transformation. In just under a week, substantial progress has been made on the pop up park located at the former High Street and Henry Street intersection. From Monday, October 21, the pop up park, designed by the local community and business, will be open to the public for a trial period of one year. At an intensive one-day workshop last month local business representatives, community members, students, designers and architects designed their ideal park from a kit of donated materials and items such as paints and plants. Just some of the features of the new park include turf laid over the top of the existing road, new picnic seating and entertainment space, a chalkboard feature on the pavement for young children, a log play area, games painted on the pavement and new plants and trees. “Constructing a permanent park, typically taking at least six months, would disrupt businesses surrounding the project site. Th is trial park approach overlaying the existing surface without ‘holes in the ground’ means that community and business are energised with minimal inconvenience during the installation,” Mayor Ross Fowler said. “I congratulate the Penrith community and businesses who produced this vibrant design. Th is dynamic approach called

Tactical Urbanism is being used by cities around the world to repurpose public space, very often increasing its commercial value, by making it friendly
and inviting through low-cost, short term action for long-term gain.” The park is in need of a name and residents can make suggestions.
“We would also love the community to help name the park, so please send us your suggestions via penrithcity.nsw.gov.au/ MakeMyParkPop,” Cr Fowler said.

Community focus
COUNCIL SNAPSHOT Penrith Council is pleased with the latest results of their Community Survey 2013. Overall, residents rated their satisfaction with Council’s overall performance as ‘moderately high’, with 69 per cent of respondents rating their satisfaction between seven and 10 out of 10. Th is result is similar to that of 2012 (with an overall score of 6.95), but significantly higher than the NSW average score of 5.78. The results show that Council continues to deliver good value for rates, with residents acknowledging an increase in the value they receive for their rate dollar since 2012. The survey showed residents rating the value for money of the rate dollar as ‘moderately high’, with 64 per cent giving a rating of seven to 10. Th is is a significant increase from the ‘moderate’ rating received in 2012. Council is currently updating a number of its engineering guidelines, policies and specifications, with two draft policies soon to go on public exhibition. Council has endorsed the Construction Specification for Civil Works (Working Draft) Policy and the Stormwater Drainage for Building Developments (Working Draft) Policy for exhibition. Guidelines for standard engineering drawings, flood liable land and road naming are also being reviewed. Iplex Pipelines Australia has put in a development application to build and operate a plastics plant in Hickeys Road. The area, which supports light industrial development, is already home to several small manufacturing and industrial premises. The plant would cost $15 million to build.

enrith High School student Rachel Gibbons has been named as one of 20 students to receive the prestigious John Lincoln Youth Community Service Award from the Order of Australia Association. Rachel, who is currently completing her Year 12 HSC exams, amazingly fi nds time outside her studies to volunteer both within her school and the broader community. “I’ve done youth parliament, volunteered at the Women’s Day Classic run in Parramatta, and volunteer with Amnesty International, 40-hour famine and Shave for a Cure,” Rachel said humbly. Rachel has also participated in the Australian Women’s Coalition project, Shout, which aims to give disadvantaged women a voice. “The project was designed to help empower women, so in the Bankstown area, we got about 100 bunting flags together which had the words “I am” written on them, so that women could fi ll in the last word, like ‘strong’, ‘successful’... and then they would write on the other side of the flag why that word was important to them,” Rachel said. “I am passionate about all rights, it doesn’t matter what age, gender, sexuality you are, people deserve to have equal rights.” Penrith High School Principal, John Elton, described Rachel as a wonderful student. “Rachel is a quiet achiever, when we were sent the nomination form for the community service award, I thought of Rachel because of her involvement with school activities such as Shave for a Cure, but then when I asked about her out-of-school activities, I learnt just how much she was doing in the community,” Mr Elton said. “She should be very proud of her achievements,

and yet she is very humble.” The John Lincoln Community Service Award will be presented to Rachel on November 13 at Government House by the NSW Governor, Marie Bashir. “I was really shocked when I found out I had won... My grandmother in 2000 on Australia Day received an Order of Australia award so I guess I am glad to be keeping up the tradition,” she said.

enewal of Parklawn Place, Werrington shops and investment in local public spaces like Werrington Lakes are just some of the small scale projects Penrith Council in partnership with local residents will be undertaking over the next year. Two new Neighbourhood Action Plans have been developed for the communities of Werrington and North St Marys as part of Council’s important Neighbourhood Renewal Program. Heather Chaffey, Acting Coordinator of the Neighbourhood Renewal Program, said that during consultation with the communities it was obvious that residents were very proud of their suburbs. “Family fun days and barbecues were
often the fi rst time many residents had contact with Council staff. It was really obvious that although they wanted us to hear their concerns, they are fiercely proud of where they live,” she said. “Residents in Werrington said that Werrington Lakes has a lot of potential and they would like to see more amenities – the great thing is that we have $300,000 from Section 94 developer contributions available for the Lakes so we can already tick off that concern.” Other projects to occur in the Werrington area include investigating the option of creating a space for teenagers and the provision of a footpath on John Oxley Avenue. North St Marys had similar project ideas. “We had a lot of people tell us that they would like to see Parklawn Place be upgraded and the shopfronts improved – we were also told how important the kebab shop is,” Ms Chaffey said.

Carers Week aims to celebrate work that goes unnoticed
T
KATHERINE TWEED
he local community has this week been celebrating the wonderful yet sometimes tough work that carers do every day. National Carers Week, running from Sunday, October 13 through until Saturday, October 19, is traditionally a week for the community to pamper, support, recognise and reward carers for the dedication they give to those they care for by giving them a “break” from their day to day work. Th is “break” can be anything from a luncheon to a massage, showing carers that their hard work is appreciated by their local community. Tracey Dickson is often seen taking her son Liam to groups, activities and events across the local area as part of her dedication to keeping him involved in the community. Liam has a disability and Ms Dickson is one of 2.5 million Australians who care for a loved one like him. “First and foremost, I am a mum. I am Liam’s mum but I also care for him,” Ms Dickson said. “Caring for him is really rewarding. He is more settled with me as his carer – it is something we both enjoy doing together.” Many carers, Ms Dickson included, feel that they are not in need of recognition because “you do it because you love it”. “There are so many other carers and parents out there who have it much harder than I do,” she said.
Ms Dickson, her son Liam and a team member at Nepean Food Services.
“I think it is important that people recognise that there are people out there who dedicate their lives to caring for others. “Carers Week is a good time to put a shine on people who have a very challenging job.” A number of events were held across the
local area this week to give carers a well-deserved break, including at Nepean Food Services, a local organisation who have supported Ms Dickson and Liam, as part of Liam’s community involvement. Nepean Food Services hosted a ‘Care to Dine’ lunch on Friday, exclusively for carers in the local area.
Carers take some time out Carers were treated to a day of pampering at Nepean TAFE Western Sydney Institute (WSI) on Tuesday, as part of Carers Week this week. Carers from Blacktown and Mt Druitt Hospital were transported to Nepean TAFE where they received beauty treatments from TAFE WSI students studying nail technology and hair dressing. The carers were treated to manicures and blow drys before being taken back to the hospital for relaxing massages, provided by Blue Mountains TAFE WSI students. “There are almost a million carers across New South Wales. More than 100,000 are aged under 25 and 66 per cent of primary carers are female. Some carers use all their time and energy towards supporting others, and can sometimes forget about their own health and wellbeing,” said Western Sydney Local Health District Nurse Manager, Cheryle Morley. “A pamper session is a great reminder that even an appointment for a haircut can be difficult to attend if respite is not available for the one they care for.” Director of Education and head of Nepean College, Foonghar Chong said that the Carers Week pampering initiative was a great opportunity for both carers and students. “These students have chosen to work in an industry where they can pamper other people and it is great that they can use their skills for people who care for others.”

Woman naive, says magistrate: A woman appeared before Penrith Local Court this week after she made the decision to drive home from a night out whilst under the influence of alcohol. The 35-year-old single mother had organised a night out with friends, planning on getting a lift to and from a local licensed venue. Early in the night, those plans changed and she drove herself to an Emu Plains venue. At around 10.30pm, after consuming two drinks, she left the venue in Emu Plains and drove to another licensed venue in Penrith. She consumed another alcoholic beverage before driving home. She was pulled over for a random breath test and returned a positive result of 0.073, which is in the low-range. The magistrate referred to her decision as “naive. A conviction was not recorded and she was placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond under Section 10. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Good behaviour bond for assault: A man appeared before the court this week on an assault charge for the second time, after he failed to appear at Penrith Local Court on the last occasion. The man plead guilty to charges of assault and damage property after an incident involving his former partner. The pair had been in a relationship for four years when one night, after they had been consuming alcohol together, an argument broke out. The argument led to a physical altercation where the offender punched the victim five times, including a number of blows to the face. He then kicked in a door, causing significant damage. The police were called by a neighbour and when they arrived, they located the heavily intoxicated man asleep in the back of his utility. For the assault charge, the man was placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond under section 9, with a specific condition to not assault the victim. For the damage to the door, the man was fi ned $400. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Big bill for man with bad record: A man has been fi ned $2,700 after appearing at Penrith Local Court this week, charged with four separate offences. On July 20, 2013, the man was charged by police for proceeding through a red traffic light and for drink driving. Just over two weeks later, the man was again charged by police for another drink driving matter, this time in the mid-range and for possessing 25g of cannabis. The court heard that the man has an unsatisfactory criminal record.

Charity event next weekend helps give troops serving overseas a morale boost
M
KATHERINE TWEED
otorcycle riders and classic car drivers will be revving up their engines in Penrith next weekend as they set off on a ride destined to improve the morale of troops serving overseas. The second annual Boots and Bullets Ride will kick off on Saturday, October 26, raising money for ‘Operation: Dear Troops’, which packs and sends care packages to servicemen and women carrying out their duties overseas. Supporting the organisation comes naturally to the Western Brotherhood Social Motorcycle Club (SMC), which coordinates the event, as members have close ties with the organisation as well as with the Australian Armed Forces. “I am ex military so I know what it is like myself,” said SMC president, Carl Richards. “When you are away from your family, you can feel a bit depressed and sometimes lonely. Getting a care package just lifts morale, it makes you feel like someone cares.” Each care package sent overseas contains creature comforts, like socks, undies and magazines, which Mr Richards says makes a big difference to troops living away from home. The SMC is encouraging all motorcycle riders and classic car drivers to take part in the 100km ride from Penrith to Putty for a simple $20 donation, with all proceeds going directly to ‘Operation: Dear Troops’.

Ride shows how much we care

“Every cent that we raise goes to troops overseas. The more people that turn up and support it, the more care packages we can create,” Mr Richards said.
Riders and drivers will be meeting at 8.30am at the Krispy Kreme car park, Mulgoa Road, Penrith, and from there will ride together to Grey Gums Cafe on Putty
Road, Putty, where they can enjoy live entertainment, activities for the whole family and a sausage sizzle. Call 0400 087 741 for more details.

n Emu Plains liquor store saw its busiest day of the year last Friday when Hollywood royalty in the form of Dan Aykroyd was in the house. The 61-year-old Canadian actor, who starred in classics like ‘Blues Brothers’ and ‘Ghostbusters’, was spruiking his vodka line, Crystal Head Vodka. Despite being 80 minutes late to his scheduled appearance at Chamber Cellars in Emu Plains, fans didn’t mind
waiting to catch a glimpse of the actor. In order to meet Aykroyd, fans had to purchase an item from his Crystal Head Vodka range for him to sign, with the cheapest bottle starting at $80 through to the most expensive at $230. But the hefty asking price to meet one of the world’s most successful and recognised actors didn’t seem to bother fans who purchased the uber-cool heads by the truckload. To Aykroyd’s credit, he even took time out to sign DVDs and movie memorabilia as well as pose for photos with adoring fans.

Jordan Springs community continues to grow with new facility to open Sunday
J
ordan Springs residents and the local Penrith community will soon enjoy a brand new feature lake. Jordan Springs Village Centre will spring to life with the opening of the Jordan Springs Lake this Sunday. Featuring an Australian fi rst, residents and the Penrith community will enjoy plenty of land loving fun aboard the largest playground pirate ship in the Southern Hemisphere. Lend Lease Communities Regional Project Director, Arthur Ilias, explained that the completion of the lake demonstrated some of the great lifestyle benefits that local residents and the broader community were beginning to see being delivered at Jordan Springs. “At Jordan Springs we pride ourselves on creating vibrant community living,” he said. “The lake is designed to be a central feature of Jordan Springs and part of the broader vision for our Village Centre precinct. “With the lake complete and the fir st stage of the shopping centre due to open by December, local residents and the broader community are starting to benefit from all of the amenities being delivered as part of our Village Centre.” A series of wide footpaths, bike trails and pedestrian friendly streets throughout Jordan Springs will link the community quickly and easily to the lake and all of the surrounding amenities, making it the vibrant heart of the Jordan Springs suburb. The three hectare lake has also been designed with sustainability features in
mind. Operating as a stormwater quality basin to manage the water quality from the catchment area the lake has been created to support the existing natural environment. “Preserving the 900 hectare Regional Park and adding to its integrity by creating the Village Centre Lake allows us to establish a destination that the entire Penrith community can enjoy for years to come,” Mr Ilias said. The Lake will offer a place for friends and family to come and enjoy recreational activities including sailing model boats, kayaking, and a weekend barbecue or somewhere for the kids to play. “Featuring a world fi rst for Australia with our new pirate ship playground, residents and the local community will discover that the new Jordan Springs Lake is an ideal location to meet family and friends and enjoy the natural open space and recreational activities,” Mr Ilias said. The Jordan Springs pirate ship is a custom designed rope structure and is the fi rst of its kind in Australia. Built for the young and young at heart , the design includes the components of a real ship, with play elements including a stern, bow, masts, under decks, internal access, a crow’s nest and a ‘walk the plank’. As part of the celebration this Sunday, children will be entertained with lively games and activities including a meet and greet with Wiggles characters Dorothy the Dinosaur and Captain Feathersword. Former ‘Masterchef’ contestant, Jay Huxley, will also demonstrate how to cook up a lovely seafood barbecue by the lake.

Get Ready for Summer

ou’ve been staring at your pool all winter anticipating this time of year, but now that summer is fi nally here, is your pool in its best shape? Here are some simple tips to get your pool ready for the summer season. 1. Remove the pool cover – Clear the cover of leaves and debris that might have collected over winter. If the cover has water on the top, drain this off and don’t feed it back into the pool. 2. Fill the pool – The water level should be up to the middle of the skimmer opening.
3. Physical cleaning – Remove leaves, sticks and debris with the pool net. Check that your fi ltration system is working and vacuum the pool. 4. Test your water – Take a sample of your water to a pool shop for a complete analysis. 5. Test reagents – Make sure that your test reagents are new to get an accurate reading from your home test kit as some of these chemicals can go stale. 6. Balance your water – Purchase a sophisticated test kit or test strip which can test for alkalinity, stabiliser, hardness as well as pH and chlorine.

Prepare, Act, Survive: Being ready for fire threats is vital
S
ummer may still be more than a month away but we’ve already seen the dangers of the summer bushfi re season. However, despite the warnings, many people still fail to prepare for them. When threatened by bushfi res, people will often leave it too late to make critical decisions and often have few safe options left when the fi re strikes. The NSW Rural Fire Service is encouraging people to ‘Prepare, Act and Survive’ this summer. There are many important decisions you must make before the fi re season starts.
A Bushfi re Survival Plan is one of the best ways to help improve the safety of you and your family before the impact of, or during a bushfi re. Your plan can help stop you from making rushed and dangerous decisions at the last moment. The NSW Rural Fire Service encourages you to complete your plan with your family, so everyone knows what they will do if a fi re starts. As bushfi res can cause all sorts of immediate health effects, it’s important to have an Emergency Survival Kit which includes items such as a battery-powered radio, torch, fi rst-aid kit and blanket.

Time to focus on your lawn The tips you need to prepare your grass for the hot weather ahead
P
enrith is one of the hottest spots in Sydney come summer time, which often means our lawns can suffer the most. Turf Australia’s Anthony Muscat says now is the time to think about what you can do to ensure your lawn is in peak condition for the hottest season of the year. “A lack of water is one obvious cause of lawn trouble during summer, but with the right approach and careful maintenance now, your lawn will flourish during summer,” he said. “Avoid mowing your lawn too low from now until autumn. Water grass early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid evaporation by the hot sun in the middle of the day.” Anthony’s top five tips for lawn maintenance during warmer months include: 1. Weed it – Weeding your lawn now will mean fewer bindies come summer. 2. Feed it – Turf is incredibly durable, so a light fertiliser is all you need to make your lawn luscious and green. 3. Let it breathe – Lawns can be hightraffic areas during summer, so you need to aerate your lawn by piercing the soil with a pitch fork. 4. Give it a haircut – Mowing your lawn regularly will help to ensure it remains healthy. 5. Water it – Your grass should be watered early in the morning or evening when there is less sun to ensure it absorbs as much water as possible and helps minimise evaporation.
Getting your grass in tip top shape for summer can be a challenge.

eaders will note the new heading for my column. The “Penrith Progression” (TPP) used previously is the tag for a new PBA program developed jointly with Council to revitalise the Penrith CBD. It will soon have its own communication plan and website etc. As my columns reference key issues on job creation and economic development this change is necessary to give TPP is own discrete presence. One of the key aspirations of the Penrith Health and Education Precinct, our flagship program, has been partially realised with the launch of the Charles Perkins Centre Nepean in partnership with The University of Sydney Medical School Nepean. The launch, which took place last week, marks a new beginning for researchers to come together across various disciplines and interlinked nodes to share their research in innovative ways and develop “real world solutions” as part of the research program of the half a billion dollar Charles Perkins Centre (CPC) located University of Sydney. The Penrith Business Alliance and its partners have been strongly advocating for a Nepean Medical Research Institute (NMRI) to strengthen the presence of research at Nepean and to attract international researchers to our City. A consortium is working in partnership with the State Government to plan for a NMRI and looks forward to Commonwealth funding support to bring the project to fruition.

Walking away
K
nowing how to get the best performance from your employees can be diffic ult. The fact that you are running a business means that you have a fairly good dose of entrepreneurial spirit! So why not give your staff an opportunity to start thinking like entrepreneurs to encourage growth? One way to do this is to let them make decisions that have an impact on their work and then hold them accountable for the results. Th is might be small areas of authority to start with as you ‘test the waters’, but it begins to increase your employees’ commitment to your business and ultimately its success. You can also assist your employees to set goals, but let them figure out how to achieve them. Not only does this give them some freedom and motivation, you may also fi nd some surprising and unexpected ideas surfacing. Create a culture where employees are encouraged to experiment. Everything has the potential for improvement: the old adage ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fi x it’ is a poor mandate for your business. Ask employees to seek out changes that will have a positive impact on your business. In some instances, you might fi nd that your current procedure or product or system is working in the best manner it can. But you will not know that until you consider and experiment with other options. Always devote time for feedback from any of these changes in order to evaluate what went right or wrong. You (and your employees) can learn just as much from what worked as what did not work and strategies can be developed based on those lessons.
Y
ou have to know when to walk away. It is a hard thing to do, you will wonder for a while after if it was the right decision and if you should have found another option to deal with the client. But there are those scenarios where it’s better if you walk away from the work. Here are some of those times: • You’re not getting paid. Th is is obvious but not taken seriously. It’s not turnover until it’s in your bank account so if a client is running up a big bill, have a good think about your position. • When potential or current clients introduce strange and unreasonable terms. I’ve had some of my clients get offered to be paid six months after completing the job and others getting asked to have refund clauses if the client does a back fli p even after the job is complete. • Your client wants you to do something illegal or unethical. Walk away fast. Run even. • It’s not ‘clicking’. If nothing you do is quite right no matter how much you try, it may be worth letting the client go. It’s like personal relationships, some people just don’t click. • When your boundaries keep getting pushed. Thi s is for those clients that always want that little bit more. If you’re cringing every time they email or call you then you’re probably better off find ing another client that fits right. • When you’re already swamped. Speaks for itself. • When you’ve raised your rates and can’t afford to keep the client or they demand a too-low fee.

THE WESTERN WEEKENDER PENRITH’S #1 GUIDE FOR OLDER RESIDENTS
lthough grandparents are loved and admired on every day of the year, next weekend grandparents in the local area have an excuse to be given some extra special attention. Grandparents Day is coming up on Sunday, October 27, giving local grandchildren and great-grandchildren the opportunity to thank their grandparents for being the wonderful people that they are. Grandparents play an important role in families across the local area as mentors, baby sitters, a listening ear or a comforting hug to their loved ones. They also give a lot back to the local community as volunteers. 67-year-old Margaret Noonan from
Cambridge Park (pictured with granddaughter Rebecca) is a grandmother to 13 children, with a number of them now adults and is the great-grandmother to six children. Only a few live nearby but that doesn’t stop her from keeping in touch. “I love them all very much, unconditionally. Each one is special in their own way. I really am pretty lucky – we all make up a big happy family,” she said. To Ms Noonan, being a grandparent is about appreciating your grandchildren; making yourself available for them whenever they are in need. “I will always be there for them when they need my help and if they get into strife, as some boys often do, you are there for them too.”
Like all grandparents, Ms Noonan has developed a special bond with all her grandchildren and still remembers the birth of her fi rst; a boy. Grandparents Day is a NSW Government initiative, introduced in 2011 and celebrated each year on the last Sunday in October. “Th is is an opportunity to recognise all the hard work grandparents do for their families. Grandparents are often the unsung heroes in our community, and it’s only appropriate that they are recognised with a day in their honour,” said State Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies. “I hope families can take the time to organise something special for their grandparents on the 27th of October.” - Katherine Tweed

Rotary International convention to be held in Sydney
The proportion of Australian seniors (those over the age of 65) who drive has grown by 10 per cent in the last 10 years, but 25-34-year-olds are today less inclined to get behind the wheel, the latest research from Roy Morgan shows. Australians aged 65 and over are now more likely to drive than 25-34-year-olds. Back in 2003, 87.5 per cent of the younger group drove compared with 75.9 per cent of seniors; today, 83.3 per cent of seniors are still behind the wheel but just 82.0 per cent of Australians in their late 20s and early 30s drive. The proportional rise among seniors equates to over one million more motorists aged over 65, and now makes these drivers the third largest bloc of road users behind 35-49 and 50-64-year-olds, with the 25-34-year-olds bumped down to fourth. In other age groups, the proportion of drivers is relatively unchanged since 2003. Over 92 per cent of 35-64-year-olds drive, and 71 per cent of 18-24-year-olds have taken to the road. There are now 15.6 million drivers on our roads, an increase of more than 2.6 million over the last decade. The overall proportion of Australians driving (81.9 per cent) is up less than 0.1 per cent since 2003.
S
ydney is to host Rotary International’s annual convention for 2014, expected to bring more than 18,000 Rotary members from over 150 countries together in the one place. The 105th annual convention is set to transform Sydney Olympic Park from June 1 until June 4 next year for a multitude of informative sessions and workshops as well as keynote speakers. “Sydney is a vibrant international hub as well as a gateway between East and West,” said 2013-14 Rotary International President Ron Burton. “It is the perfect venue for our convention as we celebrate and share the many ways our members have found to use the resources of Rotary to improve the lives of families worldwide.” NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell commended the work of Rotary, saying Sydney was proud to host the international event, which will attract plenty of attention next year. “Th is event will inject an estimated $60.5 million into the NSW economy, which is great news for local businesses and workers in the tourism and hospitality sectors,” Mr O’Farrell said. “I encourage all of the Rotary delegates attending next year’s conference to take the opportunity to explore Sydney and regional NSW during their visit.” Rotary was founded on February 23, 1905 by Chicago attorney Paul P Harris and has since grown to encompass over 1.2 million members, including clubs locally here in Penrith. ust because you’re over 55 doesn’t mean that you can’t own a hand-held device such as the latest Apple iPhone 5C or iPad. Research indicates many seniors want (and already have) gadgets that seem to empower the younger generation, and why not? As prices of existing technologies drop, and services become easier to access, technology has become easier for seniors to use, particularly compared to when it was fi rst introduced. Although modern technology, such as the iPhone and iPad, can sometimes seem unnecessary to elderly people, in many instances such devices can be useful, beneficial additions to your life. Safety: Hand-held technology enables you to create effective safety devices such as personal alarms which ensure a family member or friend is alerted in times of emergency. Fitness: There are many mobile applications (apps) designed to run on smartphones, tablet computers and other mobile devices that can add value to your life. There are many that provide great opportunities for you to improve your fitness, mental agility and co-ordination. There are even specific games and programs which target specific skills and enable users to monitor their progress.

Social: Another key advantage of this leading technology is it provides seniors with the opportunity to stay in contact with friends and family cheaply, regardless of location. Webcams on a mobile device enable you to stay in touch (through apps such as Skype). By doing so, you reduce the risk of feeling isolated and remain social, even in instances where it’s not possible to physically see people. Also, many smartphones including the iPhone use caller ID that carries a photo, relationship of the caller, and notes about the last phone conversation – simplifying contact and conversations. Adaptability: For those that are concerned about the size of text or the hand-held functionality, there are applications, such as ‘Silverline’, that alter the devices’ functions. Th is includes replacing normal buttons and controls to make the font larger. Other examples include the ‘connect app’ which replaces the iPhone’s contacts list with large photos of each contact and bigger sized buttons for easier navigation. The ‘well-being’ app can set a reminder when it is time to take your medication and the ‘emergency’ button is your one press connection to an emergency department or medical help for those times when you have fallen and cannot get up. Seniors can certainly be tech savvy!

he next time you use the excuse that there is no point going to the gym because you are too tired from last night’s shenanigans with your partner – think again. A new study has shown that sex has no negative impact on physical performance on the sporting field if the deed is done 10 to 12 hours prior. It has long been a myth that having sex before a sporting event or other physical exertion reduces performance. Mohamed Ali avoided sexual activities six weeks prior to boxing matches, and one English soccer coach even banned his players from having sex in the lead-up to the 1998 World Cup. But it seems that sex may not in fact have any detrimental impacts on sport or physical
performance. The research, being presented at Sports Medicine Australia’s 2013 Asics Conference of Science and Medicine in Sport, suggests that having sex 10 to 12 hours before athletic events does not have a negative effect on physiological testing and possibly athletic performance. The research examined a number of previous scientific studies and found that sex the night before competition does not alter short term physiological testing results. Those tests included maximum grip strength, strength test, balance, lateral movement, reaction time, aerobic power, and VO2max. That’s bad luck to all those guys who hit the weights and blame their girlfriends on their lack of strength – unless of course you are exercising
straight after sex. “One of the studies showed significantly higher heart rate readings during a stress test at the five and 10 minute mark for subjects who had engaged in sexual activity two hours before, those higher readings disappeared when the same test was performed 10 hours after sex,” study author Assistant Professor Of Sports Medicine at Shahid Beheshti, University Of Medical Sciences Tehran Iran, Shahram Mohaghegh said. “In one other study 40 per cent of athletes said while exercising immediately after sexual intercourse they felt worse, while more than 90 per cent said having sex 12 hours before an endurance event did not influence their performance.”

those smoking an average of 10 cigarettes a day, says study co-author Associate Professor Freddy Sitas from Cancer Council NSW. Smoking is the largest single preventable cause of death in Australia and kills 15,000 people a year, says the Heart Foundation’s Dr Rob Grenfell, who worked on the study. “There’s no safe level of smoking and there’s no such thing as social smoking. The link between smoking and lung cancer is clear.” 90 per cent of lung cancer cases are due to smoking. If no-one smoked, lung cancer would be a rare diagnosis – only 0.5 per cent of people who’ve never touched a cigarette develop lung cancer. One in 10 moderate smokers and almost one in five heavy smokers (more than 15 cigarettes a day) will die of lung cancer. The good news, says Prof Banks, is that stopping smoking at any age reduces the risk. So, are you a follower?

his week I want to plug a great service offered through the government getting you trained as a coach! It’s free and you can get kids up and involved in activity. We all know being healthy involves movement and many people enjoy moving so much they could even motivate others to get moving too. If you have ever thought of doing your bit to get kids up and moving check out the website. It’s on www. ausport.gov.au and it’s to do with the AASC (Active After-school Communities). From the site; “Be part of a national project that gets kids moving! Around Australia, 150,000 kids have been jumping, throwing, catching, running, dancing, swimming, cycling, climbing, kicking, rowing, skiing, somersaulting... thanks to the Active After-school Communities program. You can be part of this program by becoming a community coach at your local school or out of school hours care service. The Australian Sports Commission’s Active After-school Communities (AASC) program aims to engage traditionally non-active primary school-aged children by providing free sport and other structured physical activity programs in the after-school timeslot at over 3,200 schools and out of school hours care services across

Australia. The AASC program has already trained over 30,000 community coaches who run a huge variety of activity programs across the country. These coaches are students, club coaches, teachers, parents, brothers, sisters, retirees, community members, professional athletes and volunteers. If that’s got you thinking you might be interested, here are some common questions potential coaches ask: What will I be doing? As a community coach you will be delivering sport or other structured physical activity sessions to primary school-aged children in the afterschool timeslot during the school term. What sort of activities could I deliver? We are seeking enthusiastic and motivated community coaches who can conduct game-based activity sessions in not only traditional sports such as netball, hockey and rugby league, but also non-traditional activities such as dancing, frisbee and martial arts. The possibilities for getting kids active are endless!” If that sounds like something you would enjoy, check it out, you’ll be setting an example for kids right now and in the future. You’ll even get your own exercise and it’s a whole lot more enjoyable than an hour on a treadmill!

t’s funny how smokers say it’s their choice to smoke and no one should be able to tell them what to do. Have they ever stopped and thought about why they actually started smoking? There is an old quote that goes something like: “Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done, because they think they want to do it”. Sounds to me like the cigarette companies have some pretty good leaders. And they are very good at find ing followers. It turns out smoking is even more deadly than previously thought. A study of 200,000 Australians shows the habit cuts 10 years off the average smoker’s life and is directly linked to two thirds of deaths in current smokers. The four-year analysis of health records in the Sax Institute’s “45 and Up Study” shows even moderate smoking is a major killer. “We all know that smoking is bad for your health. But until now we haven’t had direct large-scale evidence from Australia about just how bad it is,” says study leader Professor Emily Banks, the scientific director of the “45 and Up Study”. The study, supported by the National Heart Foundation in collaboration with Cancer Council NSW, shows risk increases with the number of cigarettes smoked per day. The risk of death is doubled even among

Tips for good looking skin

S
H
pring is all about baring your skin, showing off your fresh face and shining in the sun; this season’s beauty trends are about highlighting just that. It is time to say goodbye to heavy mascara, matte skin, bright lips and liquid eyeliner because dewy skin and minimal eye makeup are gracing the faces of models and fashionistas alike. Getting ‘the look’ this season is easy, especially considering you will already own most of the products that will make it happen, however, there are a couple of essentials that will make a worthwhile addition to your makeup bag. Your skin: Th row away your foundation powder as well as your powdered blushes and bronzers because, to achieve perfect, dewy skin that is just oozing with moisture, powder just won’t work. Invest in a BB or CC cream, or a good-quality tinted moisturiser for your basic, every day coverage and get straight down to the shops to pick up a highlighter. A highlighter is applied over your foundation or moisturiser on places like your cheek or brow bones to reflect the light and brighten up your face. Your eyes: Here, you should be aiming to achieve a wide and bright-eyed look, which means it is time to ditch the dark eyeliners and eye shadows to make way for lighter brighter colours like white and pale pink. To widen your eyes, try a white eyeliner on the inside of your lash-line and even a touch of white shadow on the inside corners will do the trick. Your lips: Bright reds, oranges and pinks are in no way part of this season’s beauty trends so put away those lipsticks for another time. Th is season we should be wearing a nude or pale lip – something that a simple lip-gloss can provide.
elp bring the magic of Christmas to disadvantaged Australian kids! Last week I mentioned how close Christmas is and that stores already have Christmas decorations on display. Th is week I would like to reflect on what you could do to support families in need who may struggle during the Christmas period. It is easy to sometimes get caught up in the hustle and bustle of our own lives and to forget how truly lucky we are. Many families aren’t as fortunate as others and the reality is that a number of children will wake up on Christmas Day with no present under the tree to unwrap. Th roughout November BOQ will be supporting The Smith Family’s Toy and Book Appeal by collecting gifts on their behalf. The gifts will be packaged into parcels and delivered by volunteers the week before Christmas. So next time you are out in the shops thinking about presents you will purchase for your loved ones, spare a thought for those in need and pick up something that you can drop off at BOQ for the Toy and Book Appeal.

THINKING OF SELLING
The silly season
C
hristmas decorations are in the shops and all of the preparations for Christmas and parties have started. I thought it might be a good time to talk about foods that we should avoid for our pets. Animals have differences in their ability to metabolise ingredients, and just because we can eat it doesn’t mean that it is safe for your pet. We commonly see sick animals during the party season due to them eating the wrong type of foods. The fi rst thing to avoid is food with a high fat content. Dogs and cats have evolved over centuries on a rather lean diet. Fatty foods like sausages, ham bones and bacon can cause a serious disease called pancreatitis. Th is is when the pancreas becomes inflamed and produces too many enzymes that start to attack the abdominal fat rather than pass through the intestines. Signs include vomiting, lethargy and abdominal pain. Onions are another danger and dogs especially love to eat barbecued onions. Onions release a toxin that can damage the lining of red blood cells and can cause haemolytic anaemia. Any form of onion whether it is raw, cooked or powdered can lead to severe anaemia. Signs develop a few days after eating onions and include shortness of breath, red tinged urine and lethargy. Chocolate is a food that dogs love to eat and is highly toxic. Chocolate contains theobromine which is a cardiac and nervous system stimulant. Dark chocolate has much higher quantities of theobromine and is particularly toxic. An average block of dark chocolate can be fatal to a 10kg dog. Sultanas, grapes, raisins and any type of fruit cake or muffi n containing these ingredients are also toxic. The y may lead to kidney failure in dogs. Other foods that are less commonly known to be toxic include avocados and macadamia nuts.

NATURAL THERAPIES by John Miller-Crispe
What is your focus?
S
adly health professionals only see people after they have become ill and usually tried a few things to get themselves better. For natural therapists it is even worse in that we usually only see people after they have done all that and after they have been through the normal medical channels and still not received relief. It is a lot easier to keep people well than to get them well after they have become sick. In this modern age of supposedly “free” medical care people flock to the doctor for every ailment placing a huge fina ncial burden on a system that cannot hope to cope with it and for things better dealt with naturally. The medical system is not equipped to deal with most health problems. The system works well for very serious life threatening conditions, but is ill equipped to deal with most things that ail human kind. If people were to get a regular, natural check up to stay well and catch little things before they became big things, then there would be a lot less pressure on the “health” system, leaving doctors and surgeons free to deal with the very serious problems and free up resources for what they should be used, emergencies and life threatening problems. Why have we gone down this path? Well fi rstly because no one likes paying money if we feel we don’t have to and we have

been told that doctors are free (thereby debasing their work). Secondly and more importantly, we focus on disease and illness and not on health. How often do you hear people talking about their illness as if it is themselves – their diabetes, their heart condition, their cancer? They are not their disease but you could be forgiven for thinking that they were. You rarely hear people saying that they are very healthy, that they are focusing on things that build health or well-being. Mother Theresa once said, “If you invite me to an anti-war rally I will not come, but if you invite me to a rally for Peace, I will come”. Th is is the focus we should all have for health. After decades of a war on cancer and billions spent on research, all we have achieved is being able to name more cancers (as if naming them helps). Our constant focus on disease has attracted more into our lives because that is what we expect to see and once we have a disease we do not expect to be cured we expect to be continuously treated. We expect to wear out as we age, so we do, but we do not need to, believe me, I am over 70 and I know it for a fact. If you continuously focus on your “disease” you will never get rid of it. Focus on healing and you will. See your naturopath; it is the best start to a new way of thinking.
J
esus once told a parable about “good soil”. “A farmer went to sow his seed. As he was scattering his seed, some fell among the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it. Some fell on rock, and when it grew, the plants withered because they had no moisture. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on the good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.” When he said this, he called out, ‘He who has ears to hear, let him hear.’ What did Jesus mean? Here is Jesus’ explanation. “The seed is the word of God. Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes the word from their hearts, so they do not believe and be saved. Those on the rock receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. The seed that fell among the thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. But the seed on the good soil stands for those with a good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.” You will see how Jesus says that it is best to be the good soil who hears the
word of God, retains it and perseveres in believing it. Do you have “ears to hear” what Jesus is saying to you?

ost young couples would baulk at the idea of living three doors down from their parents or in-laws, but not one young family who recently moved into the Skybrook Estate at Middleton Grange in July of this year. Duc and Alyce Pham, with their 14 month-old daughter Savannah, realised their growing family’s need for more space. Attracted by the spacious layout, modern design, neutral interiors and modest price range of the homes at Skybrook, Duc and Alyce, made the 20km leap from Fairfield and purchased their two storey, fourbedroom, two bathroom home. “Originally we didn’t want to leave the area of Fairfield, however the layout of our new home is really suited to our needs as a growing family,” said Alyce. “A driving factor in our decision making process was also the location and community. Skybrook is clean, quiet and really family and community oriented.” Understandably not wanting the be farther away from their only grandchild, Alyce’s parents Peter and June Sinkovic moved into their new single storey, four-bedroom, two bathroom home, exactly one week earlier. Skybrook is Allam’s newest community development in the increasingly popular southwest region, featuring a range of designer homes, including garden residences. FOR THE NAME YOU CAN TRUST TO Match solutions to your challenges
www.mbrrealty.com.au There are two options to consider when selling, you can hire an Agent or you can sell your our home privately. Agents are trained to sell; they understand stand the property market and know the steps it takess to get the best price for your home. A good Agent will organise all your advertising, find buyers and take control of all negotiations between you and the purchaser. Working for commission guarantees ess they they will will do do everything they can to get you a good price as quickly as possible. Selling your home yourself is a big commitment to undertake; firstly you would need to research the current rrent market in your area. An independent dent valuation would be a good idea to help you set a price and you would uld need a Solicitor to advise you on the he legal issues of selling privately. The he hard work starts when you need to o advertise your property, be available e for inspections at odd hours, keep p track of interested buyers and handle all the negotiations yourself. Selling privately is something that should be thoroughly investigated and fully understood before going ahead with it as an option. Tougher Outback for 2014 Subaru sharpens its game with upgrades to its popular SUV option
W
idely regarded as a favourite in the Subaru recreational range, the 2014 Outback SUV is set to combine rugged styling cues with its impressive All-Wheel Drive ability. “We’ve had a lot of customer feedback suggesting owners would like a slightly tougher-looking Outback with greater body protection,” said Nick Senior, Subaru Australia’s Managing Director. It offers genuine dirt road credentials and superior handling, combined with refi ned passenger car comfort with the added assurance of an independent five-star occupant safety rating. The muscular upgrades include roof rails with integrated cross bars, wheel arch guards, front and rear under body guard protectors, front mud flaps, dark grey front grille and alloy wheels, and sport headlights with black background. “These MY14 upgrades deliver on both fronts and will help maintain Outback’s profi le as one of the most versatile and capable wagons on Australian roads,” Mr Senior said. “The introduction of the diesel auto variant earlier this year combined with these latest changes highlights our long-term commitment to refi ning and enhancing our cars with the passing of each model year, in line with our ‘All 4 the Driver’ customer promise.” Customers who don’t want the full upgraded kit, which will be standard on all Outback models, will be given the option of specifying just roof rails, dark grey front grille, alloy wheels and the headlights.

Areyoutalkingtome ($16.20) was unwanted in the betting in race five but went to the line fi rst, defeating Leisa Beryl who came home with a wet sail. Bending Spoons ($2.80) put in a sterling performance in race six and under skilful driving from Josh Willick had enough in reserve to just get up. Former good two-year-old Miss Zo Zo was still too good for the rest of the field and at $1.50 driver Gavin Fitzpatrick had no trouble in running out an easy winner in race seven. The same could be said of the winner of the last race. Heavenly Cullen (NZ), a well bred three-year-old daughter of Christian Cullen, went straight to the lead and scored at $2.40.

CSR Building Materials were our sponsors last Thursday night and really enjoyed the evening. Race one went to Zenyatta ($7.70) driven by David Morris. She was at the rear early then was just too strong over the last bit for runner up Don Boston. Cindy Marie ($4.50) made amends for her previous second at this track with driver Josh Osbourne getting an inside split right on the line in race two. Vintage Cullen ($9.60) never looked in danger in race three with driver Glen McEllhinney setting the pace in front and easily holding off the favourite Precious M in the run to the post. Winner, Martha Jane ($4.30) driven by David White was able to lead and keep favourite Leighs Delight on its outside for most of the journey in race four. Miss

Imber’s mum, Janelle, said her talented daughter defeated 15 other skaters to claim the title. “Emily was hoping for a top three fi nish but never expected the win,” she said. Also doing well for the Penrith club was 21-year-old PVFSC skater Lowanna Gibson who placed second in the Senior Ladies Division. 15-year-old local Chelsea Osagahe also performed strongly fi nishing fourth in the Intermediate Ladies Division.

Pinkletics night The Nepean District Athletics Club will be holding their annual Pinkletics night this Wednesday, October 23 at Blair Oval in St Marys. Now in its second year, Pinkletics raises money for the McGrath Foundation with all proceeds raised going towards the charity. The event, which begins at 6.30pm, will coincide with normal Wednesday night competition, but instead of regular track and field wear, competitors are encouraged to be dressed in pink and the entire oval will also receive a ‘pinktastic’ makeover. There will be a number of mystery prizes up for grabs on the night with plenty of fun to be had also. A gold coin donation is required upon entry.

Hooker re-signs Livewire hooker James Segeyaro has re-signed with the Penrith Panthers until the end of the 2016 National Rugby League season. Segeyaro, who has been regarded as the buy of the year in many league circles, was already contracted until the end of 2015 but has now extended his deal with the club. The former North Queensland dummy half started off the bench for the Panthers last season and will do so again in 2014, with Kevin Kingston holding the number nine jumper. Segeyaro is currently recovering from a pectoral muscle injury that will see him miss much of the pre-season campaign with the Panthers.

The incredible form of the side had many Panthers officials excited due to the fact that most of the young faces in the team were already tied up in the club’s junior representative sides. “We started the Academy three years ago and we run it twice a week for eight weeks after their junior football seasons are over,” said the Academy’s mentor, Glen Liddiard. “The program teaches the boys skills and allows them to get to know each other
and be friends with the community.” Liddiard, who is also Penrith’s Indigenous Welfare Officer, said most of the players live in western Sydney and absolutely love their football. The win will give them the confidence to continue chasing their NRL dreams. “The boys loved the experience at the Knockout because the program is also teaching them about culture and respect, so to come away winning is no mean feat because there are so many good Indigenous players around,” he said.

20-year-old from Penrith stuns the dirt bike world on tough Sardinia course
A
NATHAN TAYLOR
20-year-old Penrith local has stunned the dirt bike racing world by becoming the fir st Australian woman in history to win one of the world’s most prestigious international enduro events. Jessica Gardiner has become the 2013 International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) champion after competing against the fastest riders in the world at the incredibly tough Sardinia course off the coast of Italy. Gardiner became the fi rst ever female Australian athlete to win her class in the event’s 100-year history, dominating the field by winning three days outright and placing second during the other three days. The ISDE is regarded as the biggest and most respected international enduro event of the year and is considered the Olympics of off-road racing. Held on the Italian island of Sardinia, the course was deliberately created to make it as difficult as possible for the competitors. In a unique twist, riders also had to carry out their own bike maintenance during strictly timed work periods, including tyre changes. It’s been an amazing year on the dirt track for Gardiner who, just last month, fi nished third in the 2013 World Enduro Championships in France after a gruelling whirlwind European tour. Gardiner also fi nished second overall in the women’s Australian Off-Road Series

and second in the women’s Australian Four Day Enduro. “The fitness levels required to compete at this level are tremendous, requiring a
huge amount of dedication and training, something many non-riders just don’t understand,” said Gardiner’s sponsor, Trent McVey from Total Tools Penrith.
Gardiner will now enjoy a well-earned break before getting back into the action for the start of gruelling competition next year.

AROUND THE GROUNDS Baseball: The Penrith Panthers have now won four straight games, defeating the Central Coast Marlins on both occasions to close out round four of the State Baseball League. Last Wednesday the Panthers scraped home 3-1, but it was a much different story on Sunday with Penrith thrashing the Marlins 17-1. Aaron Sookee was the standout pitcher once again throwing six scoreless innings on Sunday. Collin Hentzler was the pick of the batters after hitting a 3-run homerun, also on Sunday. The Panthers now sit in fi fth position and will play the bottom-placed Manly Eagles in round five. Marathon: Congratulations to local resident and NSW police offic er Rohan Best who completed the famous Chicago Marathon last weekend. In the lead-up to the marathon, Rohan was raising money for charity Bravehearts in which he raised an incredible $7,735.95 for Aussie kids. “Thank you for allowing me the privilege of running for your amazing foundation, it is something I will never forget,” Rohan said. Rohan fi nished the 42km marathon in four hours and 20 minutes.

Roller Skating: Congratulations to two local girls who each won gold medals at the recent Australian Artistic Roller Skating Championships in Perth.
11-year-old juvenile skater Charli Goldmann and master skater Tanya Heaney, both from Penrith, became Australian champions in their age division for free-skating artistic roller skating. Well done girls! Cricket: Penrith are in a commanding position against St George in round two of the Sydney Grade Competition. Penrith managed to bowl St George out early for 175. Josh Lalor 3/40 and Ryan Smith 3/62 were the pick of the bowlers. When Penrith hit the crease they managed a respectable 4/121 before stumps. Aaron Beach 35 (not out) and Peter Betros 26 (not out) were Penrith’s best with the bat. Play continues this Saturday at 10.30am at Howell Oval. If you would like your sporting results, club event or anything sports related mentioned in ‘Around the Grounds’ next week please email nathan.taylor@ westernweekender.com.au or call 4722 2998.

NATHAN TAYLOR and continued to race.”
H
e goes by the name Jason ‘Determination’ Hooper but after recent results at the Australian Masters Games in Melbourne, perhaps his middle name should be changed to ‘Superfis h’. Earlier this month the 47-year-old local swimmer, who was born with malformations to his hands and feet, returned home with a swag of gold, winning every event he entered. “It was a fantastic experience and I met a whole heap of people,” Hooper told the Weekender this week. “I swam the 50m, 100m, 200m and 800m freestyle and won every event. I even broke my personal best time for the 800m freestyle in which I slashed two minutes off my fastest time.” What makes Hooper’s golden haul even more remarkable is that he did it suffering a severe stomach bug, which almost derailed his entire campaign before it even began. “The fi rst race was the 100m freestyle but unfortunately I had a stomach bug the night before and I hardly got any sleep,” he said.

Hooper’s track record at the Australian Masters Games is nothing short of inspirational. In four appearances he has won 25 medals from 25 events including 20 individual gold and five relay gold. “I was confident going into this year’s Masters but I knew I was going to be in for a hard time,” Hooper said. “You have to be mentally prepared otherwise you’re going to get beaten. One bloke had 50 people cheering him on but I knew I had him covered because you can have a whole grandstand cheering for you but deep down the only person that can win the race is the person who is swimming.” Prior to the Masters Games Hooper was contemplating whether this meet would be his last but after his recent victories in the pool, he is now more confused than ever as to whether he should give it up or not. “I think I was so motivated and pumped for the Masters this year because I was still unsure whether I’d be back next year or not,” he said. “I’m competing at the NSW Multi Class Championships at Sydney Aquatic Centre

next Saturday where I’ll go head-to-head with a rival who I haven’t beaten in four years. Th is guy is nine years younger and I’m just getting sick of losing to him. “Perhaps my future will be known next week depending on the outcome of next week’s race.”
