First drinks as lockdown ends EMILY FESZCZUK

F

ully vaccinated locals haven’t wasted any time in enjoying some of their favourite things this week as COVID-19 restrictions eased after over 100 days of lockdown.

Shopping, beauty services and first drinks seemed to be on the agenda as businesses reopened for the majority of locals from Monday.

As the clock struck midnight, keen customers made their way to Kmart and even Spotlight to get their in-person shopping fix.

Westfield Penrith has seen shops reopening their doors, people enjoying dine-in meals together and long awaited haircuts seemed to be a top priority with hairdressers and barbers booked out with appointments.

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet reminded people to be respectful as the state begins to get back to business.

“As we reopen after more than 100 days we ask everyone to treat staff with kindness and respect when they ask you to check-in or see your vaccination certificate,” he said.

But that could be easier said than done.

Lowes has confirmed it had to call the police to its Penrith store earlier this week after an incident involving a customer who was not vaccinated.

Gyms have also seen an outpouring of fitness lovers coming back and the rain didn’t stop the drinks flowing as pubs and clubs welcomed patrons back.

The Red Cow, which opened at 7am on Monday, was once again a popular watering hole for catch-ups between friends and nightshift workers to savour their first drinks after a long few months.

Deputy Premier and Penrith MP Stuart Ayres praised NSW residents for playing their part during the pandemic.

“NSW has pulled together to get our vaccination rate to more than 70 per cent, which means we can begin the reopening process,” he said.

“We need the same spirit of cooperation to keep people safe and ensure that venues remain open.”

Excited to have a drink himself, Mr Ayres said following the rules is vital.

“Like many people, I can’t wait to have a beer and a schnitty at my local, but we all have a responsibility to stick by the rules,” he said.

Seven lets rant go to the keeper The hypocrisy of Channel Seven By now you’ve probably seen or heard about ‘that video’ posted by reality star turned actress Sam Frost.

It was a bizarre vaccination rant ahead of NSW opening up again on Monday, where she revealed she hadn’t had the jab for “good reasons”, but not good enough to share (she doesn’t have to, of course, but then why post the video in the first place?).

The video, in which she dared to use the term ‘segregation’ in relation to the rules that currently apply to unvaccinated people, was swiftly deleted once the predictable backlash began.

“This isn’t 1950s Alabama. You ain’t Rosa Parks,” said author and journalist Antoinette Lattouf in response to the video.

The reality is this: Anyone with legitimate medical reasons for not having the vaccine can get an exemption, and enjoy the same freedoms as vaccinated people can at present.

If you can’t get an exemption, your reason isn’t legitimate, or you’re simply choosing not to get the vaccine. Your choice, indeed, but all choices come with consequences. At present those consequences, short term as they are, are designed to protect you and the wider community as a whole, and to reward those who put society above self.

But what interested me most about the response to Frost’s video was the reaction of her employer, Channel Seven.

“Sam Frost continues to work on ‘Home and Away’ and follows the safety protocols in place,” the network said.

Fair enough, I guess, but I find Seven’s approach intriguing.

Sydney emerged from lockdown on Monday, but I have to admit, I’m going to miss it... well, some of it, at least.

My tongue is planted firmly in my cheek with the sub-headline and that last paragraph.

Of course we want our freedoms back.

Of course we want people back in work, at events and seeing family again.

But there were some elements of lockdown that offered certainty... a weird word to use in uncertain times.

I’ll miss the takeaway from my favourite restaurant, the quieter roads and the newfound ‘home’ routine.

I’m glad we’re open again, but I have to say, it wasn’t all bad. Perhaps we can aim to enjoy the best of both worlds?

Lesson learned, but give them a break Much has been said about the way the Panthers partied last week following their Grand Final success over Souths.

To be honest the negative stories were going to flow even if the team put on their best tuxedos and had a formal dinner to celebrate the win. That’s just the narrative at the moment, bizarre as it is.

But that narrative was helped along with the Tyrone May Instagram post, the broken trophy, Nathan Cleary’s mates breaking border rules and Viliame Kikau’s rather cringey social media videos and mocking of the Rabbitohs.

Let’s deal with the Tyrone May post first: someone at Panthers needs to grab this bloke by the scruff of the neck and shake some sense in to him.

May is not, never has been and never will be the victim in the whole sex tape scandal. If he doesn’t understand that, the Panthers should have the guts to show him the door. His is not the kind of attitude that should be associated with the jersey or the club’s proud history.

For some reason, best known to others, the club has a high opinion of May. I accept rugby league is a game of second and third chances but the person getting those chances must understand the impact of their past actions.

As for the rest of the week’s festivities, party on. These are young blokes celebrating the greatest achievement of their lives.

The broken trophy is disappointing but it’s drawing a long bow to suggest deliberate disrespect was shown.

Let them have their moment.

As fans, they gave us ours.

A few weeks ago, it removed news presenter Georgia Love from the air after she posted an inappropriate joke on social media, and swiftly apologised.

The joke was in bad taste and that was essentially Love’s crime.

Using the word ‘segregation’ is also in bad taste, but the network should in addition be concerned about Frost’s views and the way she’s using her profile it helps create and maintain.

It appears Seven has taken two very different paths in how it deals with awkward and inappropriate behaviour.

I’d be feeling pretty dirty if I was Georgia Love right now.

“The decision to bring forward the reopening of indoor pools to the 70 per cent vaccinated threshold is an important breakthrough, after swim schools were originally held back,” she said.

“It was wonderful to visit local swim schools back open today and see kids back in the water, learning the skills that could save their life, staying active and having fun!”

Those who have not yet got a COVID-19 vaccine can still get one at the Panthers hub, or via a range of local pharmacists and GPs.

2.5 per cent of Penrith residents aged 15 and over have now had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, latest Federal Government figures reveal.

76.8 per cent of Penrith locals are double dosed.

The figures for the region are among the best in the country.

When broken down further, the figures show Penrith has a first dose rate of 94 per cent and St Marys 92 per cent.

The figures come as new cases in the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District continue to decline.

Calling Penrith home: West is best for manufacturing group EMILY FESZCZUK

n Australian family owned and operated medical products manufacturer has made the move and is now calling Penrith home.

All Cast PPE has officially opened its new manufacturing facility on Coreen Avenue, Penrith.

Scott Huntsman, the founder and CEO of the company that makes masks and personal protection equipment (PPE) items, told the Weekender he is excited for the next chapter of the business.

“Penrith is an area that is all about growth, it has a strong business presence and the Nepean Business Park is a big thing happening in the region that we eventually want to be a part of,” he said.

“It is a great move for us as we started in a 100 square metre

unit in North Rocks and we are now at 1000 square metres and want to grow and hire more local staff as we expand.”

Producing level three high quality surgical masks for a variety of industries and the public, Mr Huntsman said the business was impacted by the pandemic.

“Once the pandemic hit we were overwhelmed with demand. We ran 24 hours, with 67 people per shift with three shifts a day, so it was quite significant for us,” he said.

“We did start prior to COVID but we are now one of the largest manufacturers in Australia based on volume as we produce 2.5 billion units a year.”

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown opened the facility by cutting a unique ribbon, made of masks, at the new base last week.

“It is wonderful to have new

start up in Penrith especially for manufacturing which is greatly needed in the area,” Ms McKeown said.

“We have highly skilled and motivated people who want to work locally, so this business can exemplify what can be achieved by setting up in Penrith.”

Currently employing around 20 people full-time, Mr Hunstman said providing jobs will be a priority as they expand their products.

“We will be bringing more machines in and adding new products like our medical gowns, bouffant caps, and P2 and N95 valve and valveless respirator masks,” he said.

“Being a part of the community is of significant interest for us, as well as hiring local staff and judging by the NRL Grand Final, it seems we are already on a winning side.”

s many businesses grapple with how or if they’ll police unvaccinated residents, the region’s biggest organisation appears to be in the same boat.

During a recent Council meeting, Councillor Greg Davies questioned how Penrith Council planned to navigate opening its premises to unvaccinated people.

“I’m sure most people would have heard the [former] Premier this morning discussing the opening on October 11 with a further opening in December, or six-week wait for opening to unvaccinated people,” he said on September 27.

“She also mentioned at that conference that it will be up to the individual organisations if they don’t want to open to non-vaxxed people.

“It’s not what they wanted, they wanted some government mandate.”

Cr Davies requested an urgent response, saying it was a very important issue.

“I would like a memo to Councillors about what we are doing about it as far as our own Council premises, and I speak of swimming pools, rec centres etc,” he said.

“Will we be taking the position of ‘well, you’re not vaxxed, you don’t come in’?

Or, will we just be opening up to anyone who wants to enter the place?”

When the Weekender reached out to Council to seek clarity on its position, a spokesman said it would “provide further details as they become available”.

“As the NSW Public Health Order is amended, Council continues to review the changes to understand and interpret the implications and opportunities each change provides in relation to returning to our ‘normal’ service delivery model,” he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Tricia Hitchen also raised the issue of outdoor dining.

“Given the reopening that we are having and the possibility that those people who are considered to be unvaccinated might be requested to eat outside, I’m wondering what Council officers are doing in relation to assisting all of the small shopping centres in our CBDs in helping outdoor seating for their existing cafes,” she said.

Council will be guided by the State Government’s roadmap, the spokesman said.

“The NSW Government’s roadmap will outline the requirements in terms of dining and vaccinations, from which Council will assist businesses to facilitate,” he said.

“Council will continue to work with the local business sector on emerging challenges and opportunities by way of our weekly collaborative sessions.”

Council this week confirmed it would not reopen its libraries until November 1.

Snakes out and about Warmer weather means snakes will be spotted more in the community EMILY FESZCZUK

nake season has slithered around for another year and locals seem to be sighting more scaly friends around town than usual.

Owner of Australian Snake Catchers Sean Cade, who has been in the reptile industry for 20 years, said COVID-19 could be the cause behind the perceived increase of sightings.

“With lockdown more people have been spending time at home and also walking more to get a change of scenery so they are seeing snakes more,” Mr Cade said.

“It is not that a snake hasn’t travelled through your backyard previously, but you probably haven’t noticed it because you were at work.”

As spring signals reptiles to leave their brumation period in search of sunshine, food and a mate, there will be high snake activity.

“Red Belly and Eastern Brown snakes are the most common in western Sydney, as well as the Yellow Faced Whip Snake around Glenmore Park but just because it is brown doesn’t mean it is an Eastern

Brown snake. If you see two snakes wrapped up like a plait and being quite violent that is two males fighting, the mating ritual is much more subtle and gentle,” Mr Cade said.

Mr Cade encouraged residents to remain on alert around walking tracks, especially around Nepean River.

“90 per cent of people bitten by snakes are trying to catch them or kill them and they only attack if they feel threatened so do not approach it, give it as much room as possible and keep pets and kids away from it,” he said.

“If it is in your home or yard do the same but also try to keep an eye on it and call a professional to help, plus if you can take a photo that helps us to ID it.”

With more urban development around the area, locals need to learn how to safely live with snakes.

“People buy repellers that are supposed to vibrate and scare snakes but they actually attract them as they think the buzzing could be a food source,” he said.

“We also recommend people get a compression bandage so if you are ever bitten or scratched you put that on, immobilise it and ring Triple Zero.”

Beer lovers take note We’ll drink to that: Craft beer tap room proposed for Emu Plains site ALENA HIGGINS

mu Plains could soon be home to a craft beer tap room after a local brewer submitted plans to include two bars on site.

In August, Mountain Culture Beer Co, which operates a successful brewpub in Katoomba, began brewing operations at 35 David Road, Emu Plains after it outgrew its brewing capacity at Katoomba following the rapid growth of the business.

After purchasing the site earlier this year, Mountain Culture is now seeking permission from Penrith Council to establish a retail area for the sale of products produced on site, as well as the ability for on-site consumption.

“Opportunities for holding tastings, tours or workshops is also proposed for the premises,” the Statement of Environmental Effects (SEE) shows.

“Accordingly, consent is now sought as part of this Development Application (DA) for an ‘artisan food and drink industry’ at the site.

operate from 10am to 10pm Sunday to Wednesday and 10am to midnight Thursday to Saturday.

“New aspects of the Mountain Culture proposal include the introduction of two new bars from which products produced on site could be sold to the public, being the mezzanine bar and the ground floor bar,” the SEE states.

A second bar is proposed at the ground floor adjacent to the eastern entry.

“This smaller bar will enable more convenient take-away sales and tastings in an accessible ground floor location,” the SEE shows.

The DA is the latest in a string of similar requests by local microbrewers, with Squinters Brewing Co submitting a yet-tobe-determined DA in August to transform an industrial warehouse on Peachtree Road, Penrith into a brewery and associated restaurant and bar.

Forever heartbroken For those who have lost a baby, the pain is raw and never leaves you

T

oday (October 15) is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day and a local not-for-profit organisation is providing support for bereaved families.

A Butterfly’s Embrace aims to share resources, help impacted members of the community connect and make changes in areas relating to pregnancy and infant loss.

The charity was founded in 2020 by Emu Heights resident Naomi Smith after she experienced the grief of losing a baby with her husband.

“On the 22nd of March, 2014, my life changed forever when I went to hospital at 37 weeks and three days to give birth to twins but after our daughter was born, with no success birthing our son, I needed to be rushed for an emergency caesarean,” Ms Smith said.

“My son Lucas’ cord had prolapsed during the delivery and as he was left unmonitored from the moment our daughter was born it meant he was cut off from oxygen until being delivered, which

inevitably affected his brain and other organs.”

After spending 18 days in the Neonatal Intense Care Unit, Lucas passed away.

“Losing a baby is the rawest experience one can go through,” she said.

“It is being broken into a million pieces that will never be able to be put back together.”

Ms Smith was inspired to start the charity to help those with similar stories.

“I can’t help families save their baby, but if I can make the path even the slightest bit easier to walk, then I have succeeded,” she said.

Ms Smith is currently looking for donations, including monetary or materials to construct the Butterfly Kisses Remembrance Garden.

“The Secret Garden and Nursery in Richmond has generously gifted us a large 182 square metre space for which we have designed a beautiful garden that is a heart within a heart,” she said.

“I wanted to create a space for families to be able to visit to get away from all the noise of the world.”

Foodie delight as Italian Street Kitchen prepares for opening ALENA HIGGINS

A

new player is set to enter Penrith’s evolving food scene, with Italian Street Kitchen (ISK) opening at Panthers.

Occupying the former Panarottis tenancy, the authentic Italian restaurant will open to dine-in guests from Midday this Sunday.

Gareth Howard, Brand Operations Manager for ISK, said Penrith had been on their radar for some time, they just needed to find the right site.

“We are aware that Penrith is expanding and growing, and we wanted to expand our brands with the City,” he said.

“With Panarottis folding, there is an obvious gap in the area for an Italian restaurant, and we want to give the locals the best version they could ever have.

“Additionally, the locals love to dine and are always looking for new places to eat that offer quality food, combined with relaxed yet personable service.

“ISK, we believe, addresses all of that.”

Diners can expect to see classics, but also contemporary versions of old favourites.

“Our menu is created to take you on a culinary journey through Italy,” he said.

“We have handpicked the best dishes from each region and given them our own

unique twist. We like to have fun with food and drink, and let the amazing ingredients that we source direct from small producers in Italy and Australia do the talking.”

The Penrith store brings the total number of Italian Street Kitchens to six, with existing locations in Neutral Bay, Meadowbank, Bella Vista and two in Brisbane.

Opening Wednesday for dinner and Thursday to Sunday for lunch and dinner, the casual dining venue will also offer click and collect and delivery options going forward.

Mr Howard said every square inch of the premises is brand new, and foreshadowed an exciting outdoor addition that would provide more seating.

The finishing touches have been put on the inside of the restaurant over the last few days.

“By November, we will open a brand new outdoor dining space which will be suspended above the existing water feature adjacent to our premises,” he said.

“This will house an additional 40 seats for outdoor dining during spring and summer.”

Panarottis, which had occupied the site for more than a decade, entered voluntary administration late last year and was unsuccessful in renewing its lease.

It closed its doors for good on January 26.

St Marys: Man to face court after being found with drugs, licences A man has been charged after possessing prohibited drugs and goods that are suspected of being stolen in St Marys.

About 12.50am on Saturday, October 9, police saw a man walking on West Lane, St Marys and stopped him.

After speaking to the 34-year-old St Marys man, officers searched a backpack he was carrying and located four driver’s licences.

The licences belonged to four different people and none of them were in the name of the man.

Police also allegedly located a syringe in the man’s pocket when they searched him, which contained a crystal substance, believed to be methylamphetamines.

The man was arrested and is set to appear in Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, November 9.

Jamisontown: Officers assaulted during violent arrest at apartment

A fight between friends has led to two men being charged with assaulting police, affray and possessing prohibited drugs in Jamisontown.

About 9pm on Saturday, October 9, police were called to a unit in Preston Street, Jamisontown in response to a complaint from neighbours.

It is alleged a 23-year-old Jamisontown man and a 21-year-old Uranquinty man were with two other friends when they began arguing over several issues.

When they were asked to leave by the occupant, it is alleged that they began throwing punches at each other.

The 21-year-old allegedly obtained a knife and managed to slice his own hand with it.

When police attended, they located the man in possession of the knife in the stairwell and told him to drop the knife.

He instead placed it down the back of his pants and was resisting and kicking officers who took him to the ground to remove it.

Once he was handcuffed, he was searched and police allegedly located a

with Daniel McKinnon bag of cannabis in his bag. As the man was being removed from the unit, he allegedly kicked an officer in the stomach and shin before starting to a make a gurgling sound.

The officer at the time believed he was going to spit on him so placed an open hand near the man’s mouth and was bitten.

The 23-year-old man then approached police asking what was happening to his friend and allegedly pushed an officer in the chest.

He was also arrested and both men were taken to Penrith Police Station.

It is alleged when the 21-year-old man was taken into the custody area he began swinging his arms around and hit a female police officer.

As she was attempting to restrain him, he then ripped her watch from her wrist.

Both men were charged and will appear in Penrith Local Court on Monday, October 18.

Penrith: Man who shoved spray cans down his pants arrested A man has been charged after stealing, assaulting people and carrying a knife in a public place in Penrith.

About 9.15am on Sunday, October 10, it is alleged a 27-year-old Harris Park man entered a hardware store in Penrith and collected multiple cans of spray paint.

The man allegedly walked into the timber area of the store, where he placed the cans down the front of his pants and left one in his hand.

He then attended the checkout to pay for the one can and was stopped by security officers when he walked outside the store.

It is alleged the man started to abuse the officers and attempted to run off but was grabbed on the arm and stopped.

He allegedly kicked the two security officers before being taken back to the security office where he was spoken to.

When asked if he had anything on him, the man allegedly removed a large knife from his pocket.

Police attended and arrested the man who was charged. He will appear in Penrith Local Court at a later date.

NAVIGATING THE HEALTH ORDERS We know there is lots of information in the media about the current Public Health Orders that are in place, probably too much, but we thought we would try to condense some of this information into our column for you this week as we are getting a lot of phone calls from clients who are confused (especially business owners).

October 11 saw a range of restrictions eased as the State Government begins to slowly lift the lockdown New South Wales has been subjected to for the past three months. The challenging thing for business owners is that businesses are only open to people who are fully vaccinated so businesses are scratching their heads as to what their obligations are to ensure that the new rules are enforced.

The obligation on business owners is as follows: • You must take reasonable steps to ensure that unvaccinated or single vaccinated persons do not enter your premises. The most recent Public Health Order does not specify what constitutes reasonable steps, which is the source of much frustration on the part of business owners.

• Here are some suggestions as to what might constitute reasonable steps to ensure that your premises is only accessed by people who are fully vaccinated: o Erect clear, visible signage that sets out the restrictions on entry e.g. “To enter this premises you are required to show evidence that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in accordance with current Public Health Orders.” o Think of this sign as similar to those you see in many shops that say things like “We reserve the right to inspect your bags on exit”.

By doing this you are putting

people on notice before they enter your premises of what restrictions are in place at the first available opportunity. o Assign a designated staff member at the entry point of your premises to confirm the vaccination status of entrance before they enter (and also to ensure that entrants comply with QR Code check in protocols). Think of this person as a maître d, and if possible choose someone who is friendly and approachable but also confident in communicating the restrictions on entry in a polite way. o Train all of your staff to respond to questions about why entrants need to be fully vaccinated including that this is a requirement of the current Public Health Order and that the business has an obligation to check vaccination status to ensure the health and safety of staff and customers. o Try to limit the number of entry points to your premises. o Train all of your staff to understand medical exemptions to vaccinations and how to politely request a medical certificate or doctor’s letter from a person who says they are not required to be double vaccinated on medical grounds. o Make sure your staff know who are exempted from the double vaccination requirement.

The key to successfully managing this transition period is respectful communication. Many people are not fully vaccinated for a range of legitimate reasons. It is important that you do your best to communicate the restrictions on entering your premises in a calm, respectful way so as not to make people feel ostracised.

Home sweet home Lollipops Playland to open new centre at Panthers ALENA HIGGINS

A

fter 15 years at its Mulgoa Road location, Lollipops Playland will reopen at a new premises inside Penrith Panthers Leagues Club.

Occupying the mezzanine level in what was once a bistro, the newlook play centre will be a slightly scaled down version of its popular predecessor, co-owner of the worldwide franchise Bret Stremski said.

“It will still have the teacup ride, it will have a new play frame structure in there, it’ll have all the ball cannons and blasters that we’ve had,” he said.

“It’ll have two party rooms and still have the security gates and security wrist bands, and it will be fully air conditioned and have the cafe kitchen.”

Mr Stremski said they were forced to look elsewhere after their former landlord made other plans for the site it has occupied for more than a decade.

However, he suggested it had been a blessing in disguise, with Panthers going “above and beyond” to accommodate them.

“They’ve lifted the roof for us, they’ve pushed out the balcony and they’ve built the party rooms out on the balcony space there,” he said.

“I have to say, Panthers have been amazing.

“Anything we’ve asked for they’ve gone above and beyond, I kind of wish we could of relocated years ago.”

Mr Stremski said they hoped to be open before the end of the year, construction and COVID restrictions permitting, adding visitors should expect to see little difference in entry prices.

He said exiting Penrith completely was never an option.

“Still being in Penrith is really important to us because it’s a very strong market for us,” he said.

Panthers said it was excited to welcome the children’s entertainment centre when it opened “very, very soon”.

Cat missing for five years found EMILY FESZCZUK

J

ez Hanneman has been rescuing stray and lost cats for 20 years but none with a more purr-fect story than this.

The local cat lover recently reunited a cat found in Kingswood with its owners that had been missing for almost five years.

Ms Hanneman, who regularly rescues and rehomes cats, said she had never had such a paw-some outcome in all her years of working with animals.

“I found the cat which wasn’t strange for me and took it to Penrith Veterinary Hospital on Soper Place to check the microchip details and they told me his name was Bugs and he had been missing since 2017,” Ms Hanneman said.

“Most of the cats I find are abandoned which is sad but to get in touch with the owners who had lost him was mind blowing.”

After moving multiple times after losing Bugs, his owner Saima Siddiqui said it was a miracle they were able to be contacted.

“We got Bugs from the Brighter Future Cat Rescue and he was a strict indoor cat but one day he accidentally got out and we

did everything we could to look for him for months,” Ms Siddiqui said.

“Over a year later we moved to Springwood and then to Kazakhstan for an overseas job but when we came back to visit we got locked down due to COVID so decided to resettle in the Gordon area.”

Ms Siddiqui said the family, who never wanted to admit that Bugs was really gone, was shocked to hear from the vet.

“We had been back for more than a year and my partner gets a call asking if we had lost a pet cat,” she said.

“It was in absolute shock and we were in disbelief because we had always worried he had been hit by a car or best case that someone found him and had liked him so much that they had kept him.”

With Bugs now settling in and getting to know the new family dog, Ms Siddiqui said they are so thankful for Ms Hanneman and her efforts.

“The fortunate thing was that we still had the number connected to his microchip which is so important for all pet owners,” she said.

“Bugs has his strength and health back and the same beautiful gentle personality so we cannot be more grateful for his rescuer.”

Breast health is crucial ‘Look, Feel, Learn’: The important steps all women should be following EMILY FESZCZUK

ctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and with temporary closures of breast screen services due to COVID-19 the community is encouraged to take control of their breast heath.

The McGrath Foundation believe both women and men can master the simple three step approach to breast checking, ‘Look, Feel, Learn’.

McGrath Breast Care Nurse at Nepean Cancer Care Centre, Sarah Maguire said it is the perfect opportunity to get into healthy habits.

“It is a great month to remind people to be a bit more knowledgeable and aware but it is something you should check every month,” Ms Maguire said.

“If you check once a month you quickly learn what is normal for you so if something is not normal then you can get it checked and have a higher chance of finding breast cancer early.”

While the Weekender understands that the BreastScreen NSW service in Penrith will not be resuming until next month, Ms

Concern about city’s assets The amount of money Penrith Council is planning to spend on the new “City Park” is enormous and may in time be used but in the process other assets have been badly neglected. I recently went to Whitewater intending to walk – what a surprise that was. Not only is it locked up but is looking derelict with overgrown weeds and grasses with the entry gate sign falling down into grass. The topiary figures at the roundabout are so wild they can’t even be recognised and the surrounding roundabout garden is weeds and dying grass. Bring on the Council elections with hopefully candidates who care about ALL of the city.

Frustrating library delay It is extremely disappointing to see the low priority given by Penrith Council to library services. While other councils across Sydney opened their libraries on October 11, Penrith is sitting back on its heels and leaving library users to wait until November 1. The belated introduction of click-and-collect is hardly a compensation. Clearly library users are of little importance to Penrith Council.

L

ocal settler Thomas Smith will be recognised with a Thornton reserve named in his honour.

Mr Smith owned 324 acres of land in Thornton, constructed Thornton Hall, built and was proprietor of the Red Cow Inn for about 30 years, and was also an alderman of the first Penrith Council.

Born in England in 1819, Mr Smith emigrated to Australia around 1840, initially working in Mt Druitt on a property owned by Major George Druitt.

In 1862, he constructed the Red Cow Inn located on the corner of Station and Jane streets, Penrith.

In 1870, he built the now heritage-listed Thornton Hall on his property, which he

ran with his eldest son, Thomas Richard Smith, as an orchard, rifle range, golf course and for breeding and raising many horses and cattle.

Mr Smith was elected as an alderman on the first Penrith Council in 1871 and remained in office until 1890.

He died in 1896.

Councillor Bernard Bratusa described Mr Smith as a worthy recipient.

“If we look at the history of what this particular man brought to our City... I think he was on our very first Council and there would be a few Councillors here who would have had a drink at the Red Cow, so I’m sure that they would also join me in thanking him for that initiative,” he said.

An official naming ceremony will be held in the near future.

Broadway debut worth the wait EMILY FESZCZUK

T

wo local performers will be royally representing the area in November when they hit the big stage in New York City.

Born and bred Emu Plains resident, Gareth Keegan and his wife Shaye Hopkins will be making their Broadway debuts in ‘Diana: The Musical’.

With Ms Hopkins’ family living in Leonay, the pair discovered their passion for musical theatre and featured in shows around Australia including ‘Jersey Boys’, ‘The Boy from Oz’ and ‘Legally Blonde: The Musical’.

Mr Keegan said they jumped at the opportunity to be a part of the show, which tells the story of Princess Diana and her life in the Royal Family.

“Shaye was touring the country in ‘Georgy Girl: The Seekers Musical’, and I was in ‘We Will Rock You’ at the time when we were lucky enough to be selected to receive green cards for the U.S.,” Mr Keegan said.

“After we finished our shows, we sold most of our stuff, packed up two suitcases each and made the big leap to NYC.”

Two weeks into previews for the musical before its official opening, COVID-19 created an unpredictable impact on the couple’s plan and the city in general.

“We were called into the theatre and told that due to COVID, the show was closing for two weeks, which turned into around a 19 month hiatus,” Mr Keegan said.

“We were lucky enough to film the show for Netflix, and we travelled back home for a portion of that to be with family and friends but it was quite a harrowing experience, as we were seeing the death toll rise in front of our eyes.”

With the opening night now set for November 17, Mr Keegan said he is so excited to play Diana’s lover, James Hewitt and Ms Hopkins to be a part of the ensemble.

“We will get to be in an original show from its early inception, we get to be on a Broadway cast album, and we get to make our Broadway debuts in the same show,” he said.

“We both feel very fortunate to have the opportunity, but it is an ecstatic feeling when your hard work and persistence pays off.”

Power bill through the roof?

T

here’s no doubt we’ve been learning, working and living more at home over the past three months, but what impact has this had on your electricity bill?

For many, this quarter will be an expensive one as families and households relied on their energy at home more than ever before.

For those experiencing an increased financial strain on their household budgets, there is still some help available to ease some of the cost of living pressures brought about by COVID-19.

Eligible households across NSW who need help paying their energy bills can access up to $1,600 per year in financial support with increased caps under the Energy Accounts Payments Assistance (EAPA) scheme.

Energy Minister Matt Kean said with more at home particularly over the winter months, households are experiencing an increased strain on their budgets.

“Don’t hesitate if you need bill support, log onto the Service NSW website and

register for an energy voucher assessment,” he said.

The EAPA assessment threshold is temporarily increased from $300 to $400 per assessment, meaning the annual maximum limit of vouchers per house-

hold has increased from $1,200 to $1,600.

The increased limits under the scheme will stay in place until at least December 1 when it is set to be reviewed.

EAPA representatives can also help customers to contact their energy retailers

to get them onto hardship plans, further protecting customers during this difficult time.

Residential energy customers can apply for EAPA vouchers directly through Service NSW to schedule an assessment, without having to leave their house.

For those who are ineligible, there are still many energy saving tips and tricks you can try at home to make your next bill more affordable.

According to Energy Australia the best way to save energy at home is switching appliances off at the wall, using powerboards and energy saving globes as well as only turning lights on when necessary.

It is also recommended you only run the dishwasher and washing machine when full and reduce your need for heating and cooling devices.

The State Government also offers six other rebates to help with energy bills.

hloe Posadas is shining the spotlight on Canteen to highlight the incredible work the charity does supporting young people with cancer.

The 19-year-old from Glenmore Park is collecting funds before cutting her hair on Bandanna Day on Friday, October 29 in honour of her friend, Tara Neilsen, who passed away earlier this year.

Meeting Tara at St Marys Senior High School in 2019, Ms Posadas said their friendship quickly blossomed.

“Tara was just a warm hearted and kind person. We shared three classes and many free periods together, where she would teach me about all things drama,” she said.

“She was so passionate about musical theatre, and she saw the beauty and importance in everyone and everything.”

Experiencing pain in her arm, a lump in Tara’s elbow was diagnosed as a rare type of soft tissue cancer, called Epithelioid Sarcoma.

“Throughout Year 11 and 12 she had to spend so much time getting chemotherapy and radiation but she persevered with drama performances, school work and spending time at the theatre whenever possible,” Ms Posadas said.

“In 2020 when we were doing trials her lung collapsed and scans revealed the cancer had spread to her lungs but she was determined as always, and sat some of her HSC exams before it collapsed a second time.”

After the cancer sadly spread to her brain in January this year, Ms Posadas said Tara was given a year to live but passed away four weeks later, a month before her 18th birthday.

“Tara was so inspiring, and I have never met anyone as brave as her,” she said.

Future in the spotlight New cafe, more diverse programming all part of The Joan’s future plans

he Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre is one of western Sydney’s most praised and popular creative hubs – and plans are afoot to expand its offering.

Penrith City Council has partnered with The Joan to engage the local community and arts and culture enthusiasts to identify new ways the venue can attract patrons and broaden its program.

Initial market research was conducted through an online survey in late 2020. Council received an overwhelming response, with many pockets of the community providing feedback which enabled a broader review of The Joan’s greatest attributes and opportunities.

This was followed up with four community focus group sessions held in February this year.

Penrith City Council’s General Manager, Warwick Winn, said the collaborative market research results highlight opportunities for improvement and lay the

foundation for exciting things to come at The Joan, including a new café.

“Hearing from our community and gathering feedback from residents and those in surrounding LGAs has been a fantastic exercise, giving Council valuable insight to how the amenity at The Joan can be enhanced in the coming years,” he said.

“Positive feedback revealed the majority of visitors have enjoyed their experience at The Joan and are interested in more diverse entertainment options.

“Another message received loud and clear was the need for a place where patrons can meet on site prior to shows and then relax and unpack their experience afterwards – that’s why Council is proud to announce we will be bringing a café to The Joan.”

Other common themes emerged from the market research, such as the need for internal upgrades and activating the outdoor area near The Joan.

“We learned that people really value staying and supporting local, and appreciate having a place to gather and share. That is important to us too, and a big part of what we do, so we are looking to add in new ways of promoting and extending that work.”

The Joan opened in Penrith in 1990 and was celebrated with a performance from Dame Joan Sutherland, who was accompanied by Maestro Richard Bonynge.

CRAFTY CREATIONS MAKE FOR GREAT TV he pandemic has inspired people to complete exciting projects and a new creative television show takes it to the next level.

‘Making It Australia’ is an epic DIY competition like Masterchef but for crafters. It airs on Channel 10.

Comedian, writer and panellist on ‘The Project’, Susie Youssef is joined by fellow cheeky comedian, Harley Breen to host the show as 13 amateur and professional craftspeople compete to win $100,000.

“I think it is quite a gentle, funny and collaborative show and also a tribute to all those people who are makers… they see stuff on the side of the road, they want to recycle and make things,” Susie said.

“90 per cent of the show was me looking at how their brains work to come up with things and it was exciting to watch people from different walks of life with different skills.”

With challenges ranging from sewing to woodworking, paper crafts to pottery, and carving to crocheting, Susie admitted she preferred to watch.

“I love craft but am more of a spectator.

I dabble, I do some origami and love knitting… I tried crocheting this year but that didn’t work out,” she said.

“I do love woodwork and was inspired by some of the makers and what they did but I would not describe myself as crafty.”

Susie was more than willing to jump into mischief with her co-host Harley Breen though.

“We got to run amok and watch these amazing people work and distract them with jokes which was an absolute ball,” she said.

“Harley is like the tallest big brother I could ever ask for and I couldn’t imagine doing it with anyone else.

“He was a total dreamboat to work with

but don’t tell him I said that.”

With lockdowns reigniting some people’s hobbies, the show aims to encourage others to rediscover the joy of making things by hand.

“I think having more downtime than expected has influenced a lot of people in general and there is a movement towards reusing materials and thinking about the environment,” she said.

“It makes you more mindful and allows you to be present plus it is fun and you don’t have to be any good which is the best part of craft.”

Escaping from the pain of debt O

ver the years I have come across many clients who are drowning in debt and seem to be caught in a hole from which they can’t escape. A significant portion of their income is funding debt repayments, cash flow becomes tight and any unexpected expenses present the potential for further shortfalls resulting in even more debt. It is a horrible position to be in and, for many, they see no way out.

In order to end this cycle, the first step we take is to identify how we got here in the first place. Was it the result of continual over-spending? Was it a one-off event or just not allowing for the unexpected costs that are inevitable in life?

One-off events, such as a period of unemployment or medical situation, unfortunately can lead to debt.

For clients in this situation, at least there are no systemic issues that need to be amended.

In cases like this it we normally focus on a strategy to clear the debt.

This revolves around establishing a timeframe, minimising interest payments and identifying funds that can be directed to the clearing of the debt.

Once complete, we establish a safety net to prevent this happening again in the future.

Continually overspending is unfortunately all too common.

Before we address the issue of the debt, we need to correct the underlying problem.

First, we need to identify expenses; most people are not able to accurately account for where the money goes. Once we know what the expenses are we need to separate into discretionary and non-discretionary. The aim is to reduce the discretionary expenses to a point where we are living within our means and then, ideally, in a position to reduce debt and get ahead.

This will involve prioritising

what is most important to you and directing funds only at these things. In the event that the non-discretionary spending exceeds income, some structural changes will be required.

People who have overspent over a sustained period of time will need to change their habits significantly. This need not be painful, in many cases there is significant wasted spending that offers little or no improvement to lifestyle.

In the case that the clients are not regular over spenders, but live basically pay to pay, and have not prepared for the inevitable unexpected costs, the actions to get out are similar to above. We need to reduce spending enough to allow for a bit of fat in the budget for when the fridge needs replacing or the car needs to be fixed.

Addressing how a client acquired the debt should allow us to shape habits to prevent it from happening again in the future.

Why is your dog scratching so much?

T

here are many reasons why pets become itchy. We usually think that fleas are the cause, however there are other reasons too. Some pets experience allergies, just like people.

Others may have a skin infection that will go away with simple treatments.

Thus, ignoring your pet’s skin condition will complicate treatment options and prolong your pet’s discomfort.

Unfortunately, we often see dogs and cats who have scratched themselves to the point that the skin has been broken. This can lead to bleeding and infection – which in turn leads to further self-trauma. This level of skin damage requires a visit to your veterinarian to ensure a diagnosis and correct treatment are commenced.

Fungal, bacterial, and yeast infections are some common causes of itchy skin that can be simple to treat. So, don’t delay in bringing your pet to the vet to find out what’s causing them to scratch. Your pet’s quality of life can be affected by uncomfortable itching and scratching, we are here to help!

Skin disorders can be difficult to diagnose. The expertise of a professional veterinarian is needed to ensure safe and effective treatment is started to get your

dog back to full health. Over the next few weeks, we will cover a few of the most common causes of skin problems in pets.

Causes may include flea allergy dermatitis, atopy and food allergies. We will also try and assist you with solutions to make your pet more comfortable.

Flea allergy dermatitis Both dogs and cats can be allergic to flea bites, and it might only take one bite from a single flea to cause this allergic reaction.

Some dogs are particularly sensitive to flea bites.

You may not find a flea or flea dirt in your dog’s coat, but one bite could be the cause of their itch.

Often the itch is very intense, especially at the base of their tail.

We recommend using effective flea control all year round, especially if your dog has sensitive skin. Also don’t forget to treat all pets in your household for fleas, including cats but remember to use a product that is safe for them.

There are a variety of options available including topical spot on treatments and flavoured chewable treatments.

WS has re-signed not one, not two, not three but five players ahead of the 2022 AFL season.

Big men Matt Flynn and Jake Riccardi and rookies Daniel Lloyd, Callum Brown and Will Shaw will all return to Greater Western Sydney for next season.

Putting pen to paper for two years, Flynn made his long-awaited debut in Round 1 last season after joining the club as an Academy graduate from Narrandera in the 2015 AFL Draft.

He played 12 games last season before a shoulder injury cut his year short.

Also re-singing for next year and beyond, Riccardi has played 14 games over the past two seasons after being plucked out of the VFL in the 2019 National Draft.

The versatile forward played nine games in 2021 as he continues to develop his craft.

Forward Daniel Lloyd, Irishman Callum Brown and local product Will Shaw have all re-signed as rookies for the 2022 season.

Hailing from the Central Coast, Lloyd has kicked 58 goals in his 67 games for the Giants over the past five seasons.

He played 16 games in 2021 and kicked 20 goals.

Brown made his AFL debut in 2021, impressing with two goals in an upset win

over Geelong in Round 21. Tall, powerful and athletic, the versatile 21-year-old has the ability to play at either end of the ground.

Shaw joined the Giants as a NSW Zone selection in last year’s Draft with the 20-year-old hailing from Deniliquin in southern NSW. The Category B rookie impressed in the VFL before a serious shoulder injury ended his season.

Giants General Manager of Football, Jason McCartney, said he was pleased to lock away the five players.

“We’re pleased to extend Matt and Jake for a further two years. They’ve both played key roles in our side at different

times and we’re looking forward to them cementing their positions as they develop over the coming seasons,” he said.

“Daniel continues to be a model of consistency in our forward line while Callum has come on in leaps and bounds every year he’s been with us and impressed in his AFL debut this season. Will is a great young local kid and is learning his craft up forward.

“It’s exciting to see what they can all add to our group for 2022 and beyond.”

Meanwhile, in a blow for the club, the AFL Appeals Board imposed a six-match suspension on Toby Greene after the AFL Tribunal initially imposed a three-match sanction for Intentional Umpire Contact.

Ushering in a new era at Penrith Cricket Club NATHAN TAYLOR

H

e’ll certainly have big shoes to fill, but Bathurst product Andrew Lamb will take over from former Penrith Cricket Club head coach Michael Wholohan this season.

Lamb, who currently resides in New Zealand, will soon arrive in Penrith ahead of the 2021/22 NSW Premier Cricket season.

The 43-year-old had a solid playing career in both Australia and New Zealand, and is expected to fit right in when he arrives in the coming weeks.

“Being a Bathurst boy, Andrew has an affiliation with the region and knows some of our players. He’s also played cricket in Sydney before and has a really good understanding of the club,” Penrith Cricket Club Manager, Josh Lalor said.

“Andrew understands – even from playing against us 15-20 years ago – the way that we play cricket, what the club is about, and he is very much about the local juniors.”

Lamb has most recently been a part

of the high performance set-up in Wellington, which will certainly help bolster the professionalism Lalor is attempting to instil at the Howell Oval-based club this season.

Lalor said Lamb was fixated with Greg Alexander’s recent, emotional comments on FOX League after the Penrith Panthers won the 2021 NRL Grand Final earlier this month.

“Andrew was texting a couple of us the other day, listening to “Brandy” about his pride for Penrith and he said if the cricket club is anything like that he’s absolutely stinging to get over,” Lalor revealed.

“We said ‘yeah mate, that’s pretty much it. Everyone here is born and bred in Penrith – they love the club, love the footy club and look after each other’. He’s excited to get here.”

While the transition to a new coaching structure has been difficult due to the COVID lockdown, the club has been doing their best to make it work through Zoom meetings and even virtual club launches.

To make things that more of a challenge, the club has also lost several players for the upcoming season

including Ryan Hackney and Luke Hodges to Parramatta and Ryan Smith to retirement.

“We’ve lost four or five big personalities over an 18-month period but I see it as an opportunity as we have an ultra talented young group of kids,” Lalor said.

“I see this year as a ‘free hit’ as there’s going to be modified competitions and clubs ‘all over the place’ depending how they’ve approached the last few weeks and months.

“Hopefully if we’re really organised, we’ll have a clear vision of what we want to achieve as a playing group and as a club. There’s some opportunities for us to take some big leaps this year.”

In some good news, Penrith were able to keep promising wicket keeper Tyran Liddiard despite several clubs chasing his services for this season.

“Ty is sticking around… he had some interested parties elsewhere but he is Penrith through and through and loves the club,” Lalor said.

“Ty wants to see us up our game as a club in terms of supporting players and helping them develop.”

Bates, who enjoyed an outstanding season last year, said she’s hungrier than ever to keep the good times rolling despite a few familiar faces departing.

“Everyone who wins a title wants to keep winning right? So I suppose it puts a bit of a target on our back because teams will be hunting us and wanting to beat us,” she said.

“The challenge for us is we have three new internationals coming in and we unfortunately lost Heather Knight and Tammy Beaumont, who played big roles last year securing the win for us.

“Fortunately we’ve managed to sign a few new local players and others from different states, so I think the challenge for us is gelling like a team again and getting to know each other.”

Studying to be a paramedic away from cricket, Bates has been with the Thunder since 2015. The 29-year-old left-arm orthodox spinner said she’s proud to be part of Thunder Nation and could never see herself leaving.

ne of Penrith’s most actionpacked and skillful sports, ice hockey, is returning this summer to the Penrith Ice Palace.

The Penrith Phantoms Ice Hockey Club is now on the hunt for local players to be involved in the 2021/22 Seniors Ice Hockey Summer Competition, which kicks off in late November and will run for 14 weeks.

The summer competition, which is being held for the second straight year, is open to men and women aged 18 and above with previous ice hockey experienced desired.

Speaking with the Weekender, Penrith Phantoms Vice President Paul Sobansky said after the winter hockey season was abruptly abandoned due to lockdown, he’s looking forward to welcoming everyone back to the ice soon.

“Now that sport is opening up again, everyone is keen to come back,” he said.

“That’s why we put up the Expression of Interest online recently to see if we can recruit new players for the summer competition, and hopefully they’ll all continue on and play in the main Ice Hockey NSW league next winter.”

The upcoming competition will be staged in-house, with all games set down for Saturdays at Penrith Ice Palace in Jamisontown. So far four teams have been allocated a place in the competition, but the Phantoms are open to expanding if more players sign up.

“It’s not a sport for beginners as such, you have to have a bit of experience because we have a cross-section of players with varying skill levels,” Sobansky said.

“It’s a friendly comp but ice hockey being ice hockey, it can get a bit aggressive at

times but everyone generally behaves themselves.”

FOOTBALL: Western Sydney have confirmed the signing of midfielder Ashlie Crofts for the upcoming A-League Women’s campaign. Crofts made her debut in the domestic competition in 2019 where she scored on her debut with Canberra United. The agile midfielder has spent the last two seasons in the nation’s capital and is this season set to play for her hometown club for the first time in her career after plying her trade at Blacktown Spartans for close to 10 years. Coach Catherine Cannuli welcomed the western Sydney local to the club. “Having watched Ashlie during her time at both Canberra and Spartans, we know what she can bring to the team this season and she understands how important it is to represent our region and community,” she said. Crofts said she was delighted to play for the club she has passionately supported over the years. “Western Sydney is my home,” she said. “I’ve grown up here, played my junior football in the BDSFA competition and have played for Blacktown Spartans for almost 10 years. I had a Wanderers membership and went to watch the team every week at the old Pirtek Stadium.”

GOLF: Golf competitions are returning to Penrith Golf Club for the fully vaccinated. Competitive golf will be allowed in groups of four provided all four players have been double jabbed. ydney Thunder’s WBBL team will begin their Championship defence tomorrow night in Hobart when they face the Adelaide Strikers.

The Thunder will go from the hunters to the hunted this season after winning WBBL|06 in unique circumstances last year.

While teams will no longer have to play out of a single hub this season, WBBL|07 matches will only be played at venues in Tasmania, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia due to COVID impacting NSW, ACT and Victoria.

Speaking with the Weekender, Foundation Thunder player Samantha Bates said not being able to play in Sydney this year is a bitter pill to swallow.

“I think we were blessed last year being able to play all of our games in Sydney in the hub, which helped us immensely in the Final especially having our fans there trying to get us over the finish line,” she said.

“It is gut-wrenching that we can’t play in front of our fans this season, but I know they’ll be watching from home and cheering us on in any way they can.”

The Thunder will be looking to do what the Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers have done before them and that’s win back-to-back WBBL titles.
