Off the buses: Locals stranded us route diversions are leaving Claremont Meadows residents stranded for some seven months.

While upgrades to O’Connell Street are well overdue, the construction comes with Penrith’s infamous summer heat just around the corner.

Route 770 bus services on Sunflower Drive and O’Connell Street are now being diverted to the Great Western Highway, with customers encouraged to catch a route 774 service from stops on Myrtle Street.

“Before all of this came into place I used to walk up O’Connell Street to get to university which took about 20 minutes, but since that’s been closed, I must walk up to the Great Western Highway and around, which takes over 45 minutes,” 42-year-old PHD student, Sally Longmore said.

When it’s very hot or raining, Ms Longmore would catch the bus from Sunflower Drive, which would travel five minutes up O’Connell Street and drop her at the university.

Now, the only way for her to get there is to catch the 774 bus to St Marys Station,

then catch the 770 to the university or to get a train to Kingswood for the university shuttle bus.

“It’s a major imposition, especially in adverse weather, I can certainly walk the distance, but older residents don’t have that sort of luxury,” Ms Longmore said.

Ms Longmore claims residents were not properly notified, with signs on bus stops only appearing a week before the changes were put in place.

“Just because we live in western Sydney doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have the best public transport to get around our community,” Londonderry MP Prue Car said after receiving multiple complaints.

“This is a second rate solution and all we’re asking for is a temporary route change that allows people to get out of their suburb.”

A spokesperson from Transport for NSW said community transport services are available for eligible customers, such as those with mobility issues, who are unable to access alternative stops.

Council said they consulted with Transport for New South Wales and Busways with a number of potential solutions to accommodate the services during the closure, however those options were not taken up.

Annual cycle of Christmas crap I love some good faux outrage around Christmas toys, and last week a story about a ‘sexist’ Barbie took the early lead in the 2018 Outrage Stakes.

Critics have slammed the “retro” Barbie Ultimate Kitchen set, saying it pushes a gender stereotype.

“It’s a shame that the whole idea of the kitchen needs to be gendered … people of all genders enjoy the kitchen,” UNSW feminist academic Dr Emma Jane said.

“Why is Ken not coming out with an Ultimate Kitchen set to whip up some MasterChef for his boy pals?”

Probably because it wouldn’t sell.

You see Barbie well outsells Ken, regardless of what career she may be undertaking or what she may be wearing.

So while Ken may not be flipping an egg in his own kitchen set, he’s also not being a beekeeper – one of the countless Barbie careers depicted through the dolls.

In fact, I’m outraged myself – why is beekeeping suddenly only for women, where is the Ken beekeeper doll to ensure a young chap with a passion for bees doesn’t lose his career trajectory?

Kids can also get themselves a farmer Barbie, a doctor Barbie, a robotics engineer Barbie plus many others including a scientist, builder, tennis coach and musician.

A quick scan of the Barbie website reveals Ken has far less career options.

Outrageous! Where is the equality?

Perhaps outside of the outrage we should consider it a good thing that kids are being encouraged to spend some time in the kitchen. Survey after survey shows that today’s teens don’t even know how to boil an egg. The UberEats Barbie is surely only weeks away.

These faux outrage stories, usually promoted by feminist groups or academics who do the wider feminism cause very little good when they get so worked up over this stuff, pop up every year.

In a few weeks we’ll have stories about nativity scenes being hidden in the corner of shopping centres, schools refusing to say Merry Christmas and plenty of yarns about people wanting to destroy the spirit of the season.

Most of it will be utter crap.

It was great to play a small part in McHappy Day celebrations in Penrith last Saturday.

Myself and colleague Nathan Taylor went behind the scenes at the Panthers Leagues Club store, and even tried our hands at making a few burgers.

While serious questions were raised about my over-use of onions, we’ve yet to hear any formal complaints.

Well done to all who took time out of their day to either participate in McHappy Day, or visit McDonald’s to do their bit to raise funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Lindsay lottery still on It’s one of the country’s closest seats, but neither major party has a candidate

t could be an election-deciding seat but neither major party has announced their candidate for Lindsay for next year’s Federal Election.

The delay could cost one of them the seat, given it is robbing the candidates of the opportunity to establish a presence in the area before Christmas.

The Liberal Party is tipped to settle on their candidate within the next fortnight while Labor, which currently holds Lindsay by the slimmest of margins through the outgoing MP Emma Husar, is yet to confirm a preselection process.

The hold-up is frustrating potential candidates like local business owner Brenden Brown, who has heard very little from Labor since filing his expression of interest months ago.

“After initial contact sadly I’ve heard nothing,” Mr Brown told the Weekender.

“My focus has been on further throwing myself even more into our local community. At the moment I am days away from heading to Kokoda with Royce Simmons and a group of seven local young high school students chosen by Brad Waugh and the team at Panthers on the Prowl, this has kept me busy.

“I wait anxiously for a positive outcome as I am raring to go.”

There has been speculation that Labor may bypass the preselection process in Lindsay and parachute a candidate into the position. Mr Brown believes this would be wrong and would not be supported by the electorate.

“We have really strong local candidates who are committed to delivering results for our community,” he said.

“I believe we will be best served by a local candidate who not only understands those needs but will stand up and deliver for Lindsay.”

Mr Brown now appears more determined than ever to secure Labor’s support in Lindsay, and says he is the man to ensure the party holds the seat.

“I understand what it’s like to be a western suburbs family,” he said.

“I moved to this area with my wife Shendi when starting a family and worked tirelessly to build a business while balancing the needs of our growing family.

“I understand that balancing hard work, the needs of family and the pressure on a family’s budget is at times difficult. I want to make this easier.”

Meanwhile, there is speculation that sitting MP Emma Husar may still contest the election as an independent.

Meetings go live Local council meetings will be webcast under new State Government legislation.

It means local residents will be able to watch regular Monday night Council meetings in Penrith live online.

“If it’s good enough for federal and state MPs to go live to the nation, then there is no reason why local councillors should be exempt,” Local Government Minister Gabrielle Upton said.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said he has no objection to the policy, which is set to come into force within 12 months.

“As a Council we have no concern with the directive from the State Government and see the webcasting of meetings as an enhancement to our already accountable and transparent approach with the public,” he said.

Donations needed Leading up to Christmas, White Lady Funerals in Penrith is collecting donations of handbags filled with feminine hygiene products and other essentials to help women of all ages experiencing poverty, homelessness and domestic violence.

The drive is part of the nationwide ‘It’s in The Bag’ campaign, which is held annually by women’s charity Share the Dignity.

“As a member of the Penrith community and a committed and professional team of women, we want to help and would appreciate any donations people can spare,” said Jan Conti, Location Manager, White Lady Funerals.

Donations can be dropped off to White Lady Funerals until December 2.

ocal police officers are urging parents to have a life saving conversation and educate their children about cyber safety.

It comes following two incident reports of local Internet grooming within the past week.

Detective Inspector and Crime Manager at Nepean Police Area Command, Grant Healey, said parents must keep an eye on who their children befriend online.

“This is a warning to parents especially coming up to this time of year, to make sure you know who your kids’ friends are on Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and especially gaming platforms, to be aware of what they’re up to,” he said.

“Have a hard conversation about keeping your friends to people you actually know and have met in person, to make sure they’re real.”

Detective Inspector Healey said parents should refer to the website thinkuknow. org.au, to learn about the potential dangers children are exposed to online.

“It’s run by all of the cops and Australian Federal Police, it’s about Internet safety for kids, resources for parents and how to report abuse,” he said.

New tower at Nepean will become Penrith’s tallest building when complete The expansion of the cancer centre and construction of the multi-storey car park, which will add 500 extra car spaces, is already underway. Once completed, construction of the tower will begin on the current Emergency car park site on Derby Street.

Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Chief Executive, Kay Hyman, said the redevelopment will double the size of Nepean Hospital and provide desperately needed services for the community.

“We hope to make inroads into the waiting times before we deliver this building, but it will certainly allow us to operate different models of care that are not possible now,” she said.

“At the moment we’ve got a hospital that was not built for this population, there’s still significant growth to come in the future, so we need a building that has the capacity to allow us to manage the community in a way that they deserve.”

Currently in the schematic design process, the next step now is detail design, which is where details are decided for things such as power point placement.

The State Government awaits the completion of the new car park for construction to go ahead on schedule.

“We have known for a while that Nepean Hospital has exceptional people working in it, but the building just simply does not allow them to do those things they are so very good at,” Mr Ayres said.

“We have run out of space and that’s a reflection of this growing community so rather than another band-aid solution, we are looking well into the future and mapping what is required in this community.

“This will be the tallest building in Penrith when it’s built and it will completely transform the way we look at health care in the greater Nepean region.”

After more than 11 months of construction, Toyota Australia has officially opened its largest and newest parts warehouse in western Sydney.

The Toyota Parts Centre NSW (TPC) is located on a 6.4 hectare site close to a network of motorways and major arterial roads at Kemps Creek.

The TPC will house more than 128,000 parts and will ship approximately 27,000 parts daily.

It features more than 50,000m2 of total work area and class-leading safety and technology, including low rack storage systems, which will provide a safer and more efficient workplace as employees will no longer need to work at heights to reach parts.

It will also include full separation of man and machine to build in safety, as well as the first use of a fleet of autonomous intelligent vehicles (AIV) to reduce manual carrying of parts.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler helped officially open the facility on Monday.

Toyota Australia President and CEO, Matthew Callachor, said the project had a goal to be the best global Toyota warehouse in safety, efficiency and sustainability. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our commitment, as a mobility company, is to address the environmental challenges that we face, and to contribute to an ever-better society,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Embracing green building solutions, cutting CO2 emissions and utilising alternative fuel sources go hand-inhand with our production plans for new vehicles. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are already the leader in fuelsaving hybrid technology and we plan to introduce at least five new hybrid vehicles to our range by mid-2020, including the next generation RAV4 next year.â&#x20AC;?

As part of Toyota Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s plans to reduce the TPC site to zero emissions by 2020, 2,200 solar panels were installed on the warehouse roof earlier this year.

So far, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve generated 556,000 kWh or enough energy to power 125 four-person households. The power generated so far has prevented more than 477 tonnes of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere.

The building is cleverly positioned at a specific angle to ensure maximum natural cooling.

For the first time outside of Japan, Toyota Australia will be trialling the use of hydrogen powered Toyota Material Handling fuel cell electric forklifts, with a long-term goal of being able to generate hydrogen on site in the future.

Call for botanical garden in Penrith NICOLA BARTON

s construction in the community grows, Penrith City Councillor Kevin Crameri has called for a botanical garden to ensure the preservation of native plant species.

He brought the idea to light at last month’s Ordinary Council Meeting following a plea from locals to save the hundredyear-old grey gum trees from the Mulgoa Road extensions.

Although the idea was first introduced in the early 2000s by ex-Councillor Garry Rumble, nothing was ever delivered.

Cr Crameri said it’s beyond overdue for Penrith.

“I think that there is so much loss at the moment, we need a seedbank for the future and it would be an asset to have it as a part of Penrith,” he said.

“We have a lot of vulnerable gums, especially with all the construction about, this now could all be there for generations to come.”

As part of the garden, species from both past and present would be on display.

Cr Crameri proposes native species such as grey gums, blackthorns and egg and bacon plants to be part of the garden.

Cr Crameri said it would be about education for future generations too.

“It is something to preserve the species of different trees and major vegetations in the area, so that people can see what was here in the past as well as what’s here now and showcase that for those in years to come,” he said.

“This should have been implemented a long time ago and that’s why I’ve asked for this to be put into Council’s four-year plan.”

As part of the Penrith Lakes Scheme, the contract requires a large sum of rehabilitated land to be handed back to Council as Parkland.

Cr Crameri believes this is a golden opportunity to deliver the garden in a cost effective way.

“The cost would be minimal, it’s a great idea for Penrith, it’s just about getting some willpower from Council officers to do something about it,” he said.

“We should have been asking the State Government to make this a commitment from the people who were doing the mining to establish it as a botanical garden, but the State Government has allowed them to get away with murder.”

Council is currently reviewing his proposal.

Alleged drug dealers remain behind bars – for now

The two alleged drug dealers arrested at St Clair earlier this month may apply for release next week.

Sam Talary, 26, and Scott Patrick Valletta, 28, faced Penrith Local Court via video link last Thursday charged over the large commercial supply of illicit drugs.

The pair were arrested during a police raid on two homes in St Clair about 7pm on November 14.

During the searches, police seized cannabis and three small cannabis plants, LSD, various powders believed to be prohibited drugs, steroids and more than $2,000 in cash.

Police allege the men supplied illicit drugs on numerous occasions between August and October 2018.

Neither man applied for bail during their brief mentions, though their lawyers did place the court on notice about a possible release application on November 29.

Their matters were adjourned to January 11.

Magistrate bans man from driving for six months

A night looking at holiday photos has ended badly for Trent Wesley Jones, who was stripped of his licence for six months after being convicted of drink driving.

Jones fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday and pleaded guilty to midrange drink driving after he failed a roadside breath test at Emu Plains.

The court heard Jones had gone to dinner at a friend’s house, who had just returned from overseas, and had no intention of drinking, but consumed alcohol once there.

Magistrate Geoff Hiatt acknowledged Jones would be inconvenienced by the revocation of his licence, but said he only had himself to blame.

“You’re the person who made the conscious decision to drink alcohol, you’re the one who made the conscious decision to drive,” he scolded.

He was convicted and fined $500.

A man has avoided losing his licence, despite pleading guilty to low-range drink driving.

Penrith Local Court heard the defendant had consumed six full strength beers in six hours, but had taken steps to count his drinks and waited extra time before getting behind the wheel.

Despite this, he blew 0.063 after being pulled over for a random breath test on his way home to Glenmore Park.

Magistrate Geoff Hiatt placed him on a 12-month non-conviction bond given the low reading and his prior clean record.

Hills has been ordered off the road for three months after pleading guilty to lowrange drink driving.

The man’s lawyer told Penrith Local Court the 26-year-old thought having a “Plan B” was just a “campaign slogan” but now took a different view.

The court heard the man, who has no prior criminal record, had driven from Sydney and was pulled over for a random breath test where he returned a reading of 0.064.

Magistrate Geoff Hiatt said it was not a matter where he would exercise his discretion, given the long distance the man had drove while over the limit and his poor traffic record.

He was convicted and fined $500.

A self-employed truck driver who claimed “catastrophic” ramifications would flow if he was to lose his licence, has been handed a lifeline.

Penrith Local Court heard the 33-yearold was on a low-carb diet and hadn’t consumed any food when he decided to drink and drive.

His lawyer told the court the father-oftwo had developed anxiety following his arrest, and losing his licence would be “catastrophic” for his family.

Magistrate Geoff Hiatt noted there were no aggravating features of his driving and that he was stopped for a random breath test, blowing 0.061.

He accepted the man had a “fairly significant need” for a licence given his employment, but told the offender: “of course, these are all matters you should have thought about at the time”.

He said he was satisfied the community wouldn’t be “overly offended if the court used its discretion”, before handing him a 12-month non-conviction bond.

Her lawyer told Penrith Local Court it was a misjudgement on his client’s part, who believed she was OK to drive.

He pointed out the 47-year-old only had two traffic infringements to her name and had also completed the traffic offender’s program.

Magistrate Geoff Hiatt noted the woman was detected by a random breath test and blew 0.075, just below the commencement of the mid-range.

He warned her against assessing the state of her own sobriety in the future, saying that is where people “get stuck”.

She was handed a 12-month non-conviction bond.

Man faces nervous wait ahead of sentencing for drink driving

Alexander Thomas Michael McCann has a nervous wait ahead after pleading guilty to high-range drink driving.

McCann, who appeared before Penrith Local Court last Thursday, won’t learn his fate until early next year after Magistrate Geoff Hiatt ordered a sentencing options

report. Shuffling nervously from foot to foot, a clearly remorseful McCann told the court he was “deeply sorry for what has happened”, adding putting other’s lives in jeopardy was a “irresponsible and disgusting thing to do”.

“I would like to do whatever I can do to make it right,” he told Magistrate Hiatt, swearing it “will never happen again”.

The court heard McCann decided to drive after he and his mates became “stranded” by their designated driver.

He was caught at Orchard Hills on October 19, blowing 0.163.

He is due to face Penrith Local Court for sentence on January 24.

Man’s poor respect for road rules strikes again

A disqualified driver who got behind the wheel to beat the heat has wound up extending his suspension by a further 12 months.

Guy Michelle Lokolomba told Penrith Local Court he had not been feeling well on the day of the offence, and after a 30-minute walk to collect his house keys from his partner, he decided to drive home.

Magistrate Geoff Hiatt noted Lokolomba had 13 prior traffic-related offences, yet had only obtained his provisional licence in January 2016.

“It’s quite indicative of your attitude to road rules in this state,” he chastised.

He was convicted and fined $600, plus $350 for driving an unregistered car.

Woman “old enough to know better” stripped of licence

Tracy Suzanne Peninton has been stripped of her licence for six months after pleading guilty to mid-range drink driving.

When asked what she wanted to say about the matter she was forthright.

“Well I don’t want to make excuses,” she said.

“I’m old enough to know better.”

She was convicted and fined $800.

Teens charged over string of armed robberies

Two teenagers re-appeared at court on Wednesday, November 14 after being charged for a series of alleged armed robberies.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crime Squad established Strike Force Rosberry, to investigate a series of alleged armed robberies at fast-food restaurants in St Marys, Plumpton, Cambridge Park, and Campbelltown.

Strike Force detectives were also investigating the theft of a Jeep Cherokee from Schofields, and an alleged fraud (fail to pay for fuel) at Blacktown.

On Friday, November 9 at 12.30am, officers from Nepean Police Area Command attempted to stop the Jeep Cherokee, on the Great Western Highway, St Marys.

The driver failed to stop, and a pursuit was initiated, but terminated a short time later for safety reasons.

Just before 2.30am, the Jeep was observed by police on North Parade, Mt Druitt, and a pursuit was initiated before being monitored by PolAir. The Jeep was tracked by PolAir to Harrington Street, Cabramatta, where it came to a stop. The two boys, both aged 17, were arrested.

From 10.30am, Strike Force detectives executed two search warrants at homes at Dharruk and Hebersham, where they seized further items relevant to the investigation.

The 17-year-old Dharruk boy was charged with three counts of ‘robbery armed with an offensive weapon’, ‘dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception’, and ‘be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner’.

Orchard Hills: Crash survivor says laws need to be changed

Orchard Hills crash survivor Bronco Hoang says it is an insult that the driver who allegedly caused the accident will not face charges over the deaths of his twin boys.

Mr Hoang survived the horror crash on The Northern Road in late September, which killed his heavily pregnant wife Katherine. Their unborn twin boys did not survive. Another family member was also killed in the accident.

“It is an insult to me and my family that my twin boys are not recognised,” Mr Hoang told Ray Hadley on Radio 2GB. “I did not bury my wife and two injuries… I buried my wife and my unborn twin sons.”

The driver who allegedly caused the crash, Richard Moananu, is facing a slew of charges over the incident, including manslaughter. But the law does not allow for him to be charged over the deaths of the unborn twins.

St Clair: Woman taken to hospital after crash

A female driver was rescued by emergency crews following an accident in St Clair last Wednesday, November 14.

The incident occurred on Banks Drive.

The female was extricated from the vehicle, treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and transported to hospital.

Changes to parking fines in NSW Motorists will be given a 10-minute “saving grace” period from January 31 next year, as part of a package of changes which are designed to introduce a fairer and more common sense approach to parking fines in NSW. Councils across the State will also for the first time be provided flexibility to lower their most common parking fines from March 1.

This will reduce a typical level 2 parking fine from $112 to $80.

Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said he will write to every council in NSW to advise them of their ability to reduce their parking fines following recent changes to regulations which were first flagged in the June 2018-19 NSW Budget.

The “60 minutes + paper ticket = 10 minute grace period” confirmed this week will only apply if a motorist has paid for at least one hour of parking, and only where a physical ticket or coupon has been issued.

Digital Realty opens impressive new facility in Erskine Park and commits to more igital Realty, a leading global provider of data centre, colocation and interconnection solutions, has announced its continued growth and investment in Australia with the grand opening of Digital Erskine Park II. Digital Realty also announced the acquisition of an additional 1.4-hectare land parcel in Erskine Park. High-tech Penrith building will cut electricity costs thanks to new initiatives NICOLA BARTON

high-tech Penrith apartment block is going solar following a blackout which saw residents locked out of their building for hours.

Located on John Tipping Grove, the site is completely electronic, with one resident in possession of the emergency key.

When on the hunt for alternative solutions, Chairperson Pam Steer noticed their electricity prices were very high.

“People were stranded until someone came down to let them in and they had to leave the door open, so anyone could come in and our security cameras didn’t work,” Ms Steer said.

“We looked at having a compressor but it was tremendously expensive, but in the meantime we discovered that the electricity for the building was costing 32 per cent of our strata rates.”

On the quest to consider new options, Ms Steer reached out to local solar installers but received numerous rejections due to the size of the building.

“We were too big for the smaller companies and too small for the bigger companies, but thankfully Solahart stepped up to the job,” Ms Steer said.

“We use so much power in this building

The residents pay a strata fee which covers the building’s necessities such as electricity, maintenance and insurance.

“It saves everyone money, whilst also benefiting the environment. They’re paying $6600 a quarter, so we will be reducing their bill by 50 per cent,” he said.

Plenty of McDollars raised in Penrith The stars came out to play – and flip burgers – at McDonald’s restaurants across the local area last Saturday for McHappy Day. And it was a huge day for Garton Groupowned restaurants, with a record-breaking $102,531 raised across its network of stores.

The Panthers Leagues store raised more than $30,000 through the sale of Big Macs, Helping Hands, Silly Socks and general donations.

“We’d like to thank the community for their amazing support of McHappy Day and thank everybody who participated in what was our most successful fundraising event ever,” said franchisee Ian Garton.

Thanks to hospital A word of thanks to some special people. First the local ambulance people who picked me up at my home after my call. They were very caring to me while taking my information, then to Nepean Hospital where the Emergency team took over and luckily found a bed for my stay of one week. The nurses, both male and female, the intern on a 14-hour shift, the pregnant nurse, the doctors on their rounds, thanks to them all.

Better conditions required I completely agree here. I had my girl at Nepean in February and there was signs on the wall for breastfeeding class, bathing and one other. When I asked about these I was told they don’t run them anymore due to shortages but they could try to answer questions. I then asked about bathing my girl and the poor nurse was trying to set it up all day and when she finally did my girl was almost asleep but we had to go because it was our only shot. Needless to say she screamed the whole time. Other than this I didn’t feel I was lacking in care at all although there were times you had to wait a bit longer for someone to come and see you.

he community is being invited to have its say on the proposed accessibility upgrade at Kingswood Station.

As part of the planning approval process, the plans for the upgrade will be on public display until November 30.

“The NSW Government is upgrading Kingswood Station as part of the Transport Access Program, an initiative to deliver safe, modern and accessible public transport infrastructure across the state,” Penrith MP, Stuart Ayres said.

“The proposed changes will deliver a station precinct that is accessible for our less mobile customers.”

The proposal includes two new lifts,

new pathways and a family accessible restroom.

New station entrances on the Great Western Highway and the corner of Park Avenue and Richmond Road are also proposed.

The plans for Kingswood Station can be viewed online or at Penrith City Library.

The project team will be hosting a pop-up stall at Kingswood Station between 4pm and 6pm on Monday, November 26 and Wednesday, November 28 to answer any questions the community may have about the project.

Doni spins her way to a record NICOLA BARTON

lenmore Park resident Doni Gales is spinning her way to success as the 23-year-old secures a gravitydefying Guinness World Record.

Completing the most front split spins in one minute, the indoor skydiver almost doubled the required amount with a record 55 rotations.

Thursday, November 8 marked the 14th annual Guinness World Record Day, in which she was chosen to represent Australia.

“Our Chief Instructor at the Penrith tunnel has one of the records for the most head down spins, he taught me so I thought that the fact that he had a record was awesome and it made me want to go for it,” Ms Gales said.

“It was really exciting, it was pretty nerve-racking going into it because it’s all eyes on you and I really wanted to give it my best shot and do well for the country.”

Working as an iFly instructor for only nine months, Ms Gales was first introduced to indoor skydiving when working as a dancer and aerial performer on Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines.

old, she said her background helped her to excel in the sport.

“I really like flying because there are so many different possibilities, having that dancing and gymnastic background, you can be really creative and experimental with how you use the wind and how that pushes your body around,” she said.

“I really fell in love with it and just kept working on it, when I came home on vacation I would train in the Penrith tunnel and do as much time as possible, now as an instructor I just want to spread that love of flight.”

Ms Gales has been working hard to master her craft and experimenting with different styles of flying. With the hope to expand on her skills and training, she is now looking to take things to the sky.

“I definitely want to go to that next level with outdoor skydiving, they have competitions out there. I’m mainly interested in freestyle, so I can still incorporate the dancing side of things,” she said.

With her name now secured in the history books, Ms Gale said she is honoured to be a record holder and thanked her team at iFly Penrith for their support.

White Ribbon walk On Sunday, November 25 Penrith City will once again reaffirm our support of the White Ribbon campaign to help bring an end to violence against women.

The Western Sydney Rollers will mark their 10-year anniversary this weekend NATHAN TAYLOR

he Western Sydney Rollers will celebrate their 10-year anniversary by paying homage to the film that started the roller derby craze.

This Sunday, November 25 at the Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre, the Western Sydney Rollers will hold a special 10-year anniversary event which will include junior and senior matches inspired by the hit 2009 Drew Barrymore flick ‘Whip It’ as well halftime entertainment, raffle and bake sale.

Western Sydney Rollers member, Tracey Weir, said it’s incredible that a niche sport like roller derby has reached 10 years in Penrith.

“The sport has seen a lot of changes over the years especially quite recently. The hype of the movie ‘Whip It’ saw many people in the community excited about derby but once the hype dies down, you tend to lose that,” she said.

“While the hype isn’t there anymore, the heart still is. We still play every Thursday and Sunday to keep the sport alive. It’s exciting for us to reach a milestone like 10 years given that it’s not a commercialised sport in Australia.”

To mark the significant milestone, the Western Sydney Rollers will pay tribute to the sports comedy film this Sunday in Cambridge Park from 11am.

“It’s our last game of the year and given it’s our 10-year anniversary, we thought let’s make it a really big bash,” Weir said.

“We wanted to pay homage to the personas in ‘Whip It’ because the movie inspired a lot of our league to come and play, and it inspired us forming the Western Sydney Rollers.

Seven young leaders are to embark on the journey of a lifetime and trek the Kokoda Trail alongside some of Penrith’s most well-known names.

The boys, each from a different high school, were selected from 80 hopeful applicants and will travel to Papua New Guinea to commence the challenge next week.

The Kokoda Trail Leadership Project is a Panthers on the Prowl initiative aimed at providing Year 11 students with an enriching opportunity to gain an understanding about Australia’s military history.

Among those selected were Justin Brooks, Brock Hand, Deklin Knopf, Ryan Edwards, Harry Lancaster, Reece Nuttall and Kalen Homfray.

They will undertake the challenge alongside the likes of Penrith Panthers legend Royce Simmons.

17-year-old Brock from Jamison High School said he is looking forward to the physical and emotional challenge.

“I looked into doing the trip last year, it’s something I really wanted to do and thought it would be a life-changing opportunity to discover what the soldiers went through and really understand the history of it all,” he said.

“I think it will really alter my attitude and perspective on things.”

The eight-day trek covers over 135km, with participants walking up to 12 hours a day. During this they will be carrying heaving backpacks up to 20kg and camping out at night.

“I think this opportunity is really going to show me another side of life, something we don’t have in Australia, being rural and living life, not as luxurious as what we have at home and to see what people went through,” 17-year-old Nepean High School student, Justin Brooks said.

Over the past week the group has been training together at the Penrith Panthers Rugby League Academy and at the Knapsack stairs in Glenbrook.

The boys said they were honoured to have been selected and thanked Panthers on the Prowl and the sponsors.

Christmas helping hand The Werrington local hoping to donate 300 gifts to struggling families this year NICOLA BARTON

y day she is a support worker for children with additional needs, but by night Alicia Judge is one hard working elf, ensuring all families get a gift this Christmas.

The 23-year-old Werrington resident has been donating to Mission Australia for the past four years and hopes, with the help of the community, to deliver 300 gifts to struggling families ahead of Christmas Day this year.

Donating her entire pay packet to the charity at the young age of 16, Ms Judge has had a long history of doing her bit and hopes to inspire others to do the same at a special but sometimes difficult time of the year.

“I think there’s so much happening in the community, it’s good to be aware of that and making a difference to those around you,” Ms Judge said.

“Whether it’s giving a dollar, donating a gift or volunteering, everything makes a difference to those who need it – sometimes maybe more than you’d think.”

Since August, Ms Judge has been working every day receiving, buying and collecting gifts that she will wrap up and send to Mission Australia.

Hoyts Cinemas and Wiggles and Giggles Childcare Centre in Lidcombe are her biggest supporters, donating hundreds of gifts each year.

“The childcare centre, which I work at, has the most generous families, every day it’s a new gift and parents are always asking me how they can make a difference,” Ms Judge said.

From toys and art supplies to everyday items, Ms Judge said it’s important to have gifts for all ages that can be used throughout the year.

“When you’re a child and you go to school and you’re around other children, although Christmas isn’t all about the gifts it allows them to feel included in a celebration which is so big in Australia,” she said.

“But it’s not just the children in need it’s the whole family as well, so I want to collect a range of things.”

Ms Judge urges the Penrith community to dig deep this Christmas and help to create an inclusive celebration.

“I am so thankful for the continued support and generosity,” she said.

How your kids can write to the man himself in the lead-up to Christmas he magic of Christmas is just around the corner and Australia Post is encouraging young Australians to write and post their letters and wish-lists nice and early to ensure they receive a reply from Santa before the big day.

Expecting to deliver over 150,000 letters to the North Pole this year, Australia Post is also for the first time offering a large print service for families with children who have low vision.

Preparing for the busy festive season ahead, Australia Post spokesperson Michelle Skehan said they are thrilled to be able to offer this new large print service for children and their families.

“Christmas is a very special time of year for children of all ages, so we are pleased to be able to invite more families to get involved and celebrate the festivities,” she said.

“Santa Mail is not only a cherished Christmas tradition in many households, but also a wonderful way for children to practice their letter writing skills at school or home. Sending a letter to Santa is a fun and easy way to show kids how to address, stamp and post a letter.”

Ms Skehan said improvements in technology meant kids could now track their letter to their Christmas hero, making it a fun holiday activity.

“The fun doesn’t stop at the post box, children can follow the progress of their letter through our new interactive online tracker and there’s plenty of other Christmas activities children can find on our Santa Mail website,” she said.

Kids can tell Santa what they want for Christmas, or plead their case if they’re worried they might be on his naughty list at the wrong time of the year.

To take part, send your festive letters to Santa, North Pole, 9999 with a 65c Christmas stamp on the front of the envelope and your name and return address on the back so Santa knows where to send his reply.

Parents and children who have low vision can opt-in to receive a large text reply from Santa by sending their letters to: Santa Mail (large text), North Pole, 9999.

Santa Mail letters can be placed in any dedicated Santa Mail box or red street post box, with families encouraged to lodge their letters before Friday, December 14, so Santa can reply before loading up his sleigh. Families are also encouraged to pick up and fill out the free Santa Mail postcards at participating Post Offices.

Funds for cancer fight Money raised at 2018 ball pushes Music For Life tally over $453,000 The night saw a variety of raffles, auctions, music and performances and had an enormous turnout of 420 guests.

“All of the money goes straight to research, not staffing or to run the foundation, it goes straight to where they need it,” Mr Willmington said.

Currently about 1600 Australians are diagnosed with brain cancer every year, another 1200 are sadly lost to it.

“It makes me so proud, not a lot of people talk about brain cancer, so it’s all about spreading that awareness and making a real difference in people’s lives, awareness is our main focus and that’s my way of coping with it,” Mrs Wilmington said.

“From the bottom of our hearts we thank all sponsors, ambassadors, volunteers and all of those who showed up on the night, it means the world to me and we couldn’t have done it without you.”

his year’s Music For Life ball raised almost $42,000, taking the total raised over the past eight years to more than $453,000.

Event organiser and brain cancer survivor Ann Willmington announced this year’s result at a morning tea held with sponsors and supporters last week.

All proceeds from the event have been donated to the Charlie Teo Foundation in the hope to find a cure for the lifethreatening disease.

Mrs Willmington’s husband, Wayne Willmington, said the event lived up to its slogan and was truly ‘a night to remember’.

“When we first set it up Charlie said to us ‘don’t run an event to make money, run it to have a good time and raise awareness’, so that’s what we aim for with Music For Life but to make almost $42,000 is a great achievement,” he said.

“When you’re a part of the foundation, Charlie makes you feel like family, he’s really excited that someone like Ann, who wouldn’t even still be here if it wasn’t for his work to keep her alive, has been able to give back over $400,000 – he is incredibly grateful.”

Free event for International Day of People with Disability

Plenty of activities will be available at the event on December 3

enrith is set to celebrate individuals with additional needs as Monday, December 3 marks International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD).

The free event will be held at the Mondo Greenspace and is an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of people with disabilities, and how this enriches our community.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said the day allows us to think, talk about, and acknowledge people with disability in a positive way.

“One in five Australians have a disability, so this is an issue and a conversation

that is tremendously important for our community,” he said.

“This event is the perfect opportunity to have a conversation about what we can do – as individuals, and as a community, to create a more inclusive Australia.”

The day will be part of a global event established by the United Nations that raises awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability around the world.

“Gerrard Gosens, who is the event patron this year, said he lives by the philosophy that success is a journey, not a destination,” Cr Fowler said.

The event will run from 9.30am until 12.30pm. Activities include entertainment and hands-on workshops including dance, music and cake decorating.

NOTIFICATION AND REGISTRATION OF ABORIGINAL INTERESTS Biosis is currently undertaking an Aboriginal cultural heritage assessment (ACHA) for CPG NSW1 Pty Ltd to support a Development Application (DA) to construct a warehouse and associated infrastructure at 128 Andrews Road Penrith New South Wales (NSW) (Lot 20 DP 1216618 & Lot 13 DP 217705).

Biosis Pty Ltd is assisting CPG NSW1 Pty Ltd with consultation with the Aboriginal community to inform the ACHA. Consultation with the Aboriginal community for this assessment will be undertaken in accordance with the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Consultation Requirements for Proponents 2010 (DECCW 2010).

The purpose of the Aboriginal community consultation is to provide sufficient information for the assessment of Aboriginal cultural heritage values so to inform the ACHA. This process also assists CPG NSW1 Pty Ltd in the preparation of an Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit (AHIP) application (if required) and the Director General of the Office of Environment and Heritage in their consideration and determination of the AHIP application.

Biosis wishes to identify Aboriginal people who may have an interest in the proposed study area and hold cultural knowledge relevant to determining the cultural significance of Aboriginal objects and/or Places in the Penrith area.

s a small business owner there are many ways to give back to your local community, whether you do this in an altruistic manner, or with the intention of gaining eventual business. Regardless, your local community benefits.

Sponsorship You can sponsor events like school fairs, providing food at a fundraising event, or by supplying a venue if you have one suitable. Sponsorship can be cash or ‘in kind’ – providing your services or products.

Promo items for goodie bags Many events give away goodie bags and allow businesses to provide items, particularly where there are items other than flyers. Provide something useful for the target audience, or something edible (pre-packaged with your logo).

Donating a raffle prize or gift voucher If you sell a voucher you must have three years validity. If you give away a voucher, you can choose your expiry.

Quite often unless the vouchers are for an auction (where users choose to bid), vouchers go unused. Don’t be alarmed,

it means the person that won probably wasn’t your target customer. However, other people should hear about your business through event mentions and through social media. I heard about Major Oak Restaurant through a lucky door prize at an event. I looked them up, and enjoyed a great night out.

establishing Penrith’s first nano-brewery, Rusty Penny Brewing.

Set to open its doors in the first week of December, Rusty Penny Brewing is the brainchild of Matt and Mark, two locals who had a dream of opening their own brewery way back in 2007 when they started brewing all-grain beer in their Penrith garage.

Located in Dean Place, Penrith, Rusty Penny brew on a 200L system, which is very small compared to other breweries. This allows the pair to push the boundaries with their beers and to stay relevant in the everevolving craft beer market.

When opened, Rusty Penny will have 10 different beers on tap as well as nitro and cold drip coffee on tap too.

“Five of these will be staple beers that will always be available and the other five will be experimental or seasonal beers, that will only be on tap as long as the kegs last,” the duo said.

“We will be brewing during busy days, so people can get the full experience of the brewery. People should come in and try our new brews, and we are always keen for a chat about our beers and how we make them.”

Rusty Penny Brewing is completely independently owned and has the potential of being a real hot spot for locals and visitors to Penrith.

“We are down to earth blokes that love a beer, brewing and educating people on the process, to try and build a stronger craft beer market,” the boys said.

“We are the brewery around the corner and we want to get people interested in brewing as well as enjoying the range that we produce.”

T

here are moments that you will look back on and remember exactly where you were, who you were with and what you were doing.

For devoted fans of Australian indie rock band, British India, such a moment came on Tuesday, September 18.

Breaking hearts and shattering hopes, guitarist and founding member of the band, Nic Wilson, announced his retirement from music at the end of this year.

Speaking to the Weekender in 2014, Wilson joked that if the popular band

was to ever fall apart he’d take up filming weddings.

“Maybe he’s secretly doing that, and he’s wanted to do it this whole time and maybe he’s lying to us now and he’s going to pop up at a wedding we’re at, who knows,” laughed drummer, Matt O’Gorman.

While he’s not becoming a wedding videographer, O’Gorman revealed Wilson was looking to focus on the business he has with his wife and plans of starting a family.

And as with any chapter that comes to an end, the reminiscing about the past 14 years has already begun for O’Gorman.

“I remember the first time that we went

to Perth and we were at this party and for whatever reason, these people brought all this food,” O’Gorman said.

“Anyway, the next day was a 40-degree day and Nic and I kind of woke up and we’re just nibbling on these biscuits and we’re like ‘these taste bloody weird’ and they were hash cookies and we had like three each.

“It was our first day off in Perth and the two of us, these pale guys, are walking around Scarborough Beach in board shorts, looking at the sun, completely off our heads. More or less you get those moments between playing shows, the shows are always great, but it’s always little things in between.”

Finishing up with one final tour, the Nic The Poet farewell tour, O’Gorman said the news hadn’t quite sunk in yet, but he was looking forward to getting out on the road and giving Wilson the send off he deserved.

“It’ll be guitar solos going way over the top, you won’t be able to shut Nic up,” he said.

“We all still love each other, we all still love him, and we get to do one more tour, so it kind of ended the best way that it could.”

fter opening to a maximum capacity audience last week, Glenbrook Players are bringing their latest show ‘Four Weddings and an Elvis’ to Glenbrook Theatre for two final performances.

The comedy is set in a Las Vegas wedding chapel and follows the strange romantic (and not-so-romantic) entanglements of four couples as they come to walk down the aisle, do the deed, tie the knot, and otherwise get hitched at Sandy’s Chapel of Love.

There’s the payback wedding of Bev

and Stan from Roanoke, Virginia; the comeback wedding of celebrities Vanessa and Bryce; the marriage of Fiona and Marvin, the couple who are the real thing; and a surprise engagement and wedding to put the cherry on top. All of this is presided over by chapel proprietor Sandy who, after 17 years in the business, thought she had seen it all. As the name suggests, the hilarious show also features music from The King – Elvis Presley.

‘The Old Man and the Gun’ is a leisurely venture through the life and crimes of real-life prison escapee Forrest Tucker, and written around David Grann’s 2003 New Yorker article of the same name.

Starring Robert Redford as the film’s smooth, sweet talking central character, and directed by David Lowery, the peculiar story sees the veteran Hollywood actor command the screen, and sign off his acting career with sophistication and charisma.

While the film’s storyline ambles along, it doesn’t bore, instead it capti-

vates and intrigues from beginning to end. The flick is brimming with charm, and is brought to fruition by an inimitable cast including Donald Glover and Tom Waits as Tucker’s partners-in-crime Teddy and Waller, Casey Affleck as determined detective John Hunt, and Sissy Spacek as Tucker’s kind-hearted lover Jewel.

Apart from an awkwardly put together compilation of Tucker’s previous escapes, ‘The Old Man and the Gun’ shoots all the right shots, and finds an idyllic balance between old fashioned and timeless, and playful and serious. Redford’s last hoorah is as strong, smug, and seductive as one could hope for it to be.

Ê Serial talent show star Guy Sebastian has been announced as the fourth and final coach for next year’s series of ‘The Voice Australia’. The former ‘X Factor’ judge and ‘Australian Idol’ winner joins Delta Goodrem, Kelly Rowland and Boy George for the show’s eighth season.

Big promises that seem too good to be true usually are Be wary of who is giving you financial advice, and what’s in it for them...

I received an enquiry from a concerned client this morning who had someone visit her home (under the guise of providing market research) making some big financial promises that sounded great, a little too great.

I was familiar with the company in question and very aware of what they offered for their clients; a one-size-fitsall strategy that is a sales technique masquerading as financial advice.

These companies are becoming more prevalent, and are having success. I have an issue with the outbound call centres being deceptive in order to get in front of potential clients. But my bigger issue is that we have property and lending sales guys flogging their product under the guise of advice, using unrealistically optimistic assumptions and not disclosing that they actually work for a lender or property developer.

This sort of behaviour gives the industry a bad name. Back in the ‘80s and ‘90s we saw door-to-door agents from AMP and National Mutual selling investment products based on returns in the mid to high teens and telling people, if they put $50 per week into these investments, they will have a million dollars at retire-

ment. These guys weren’t pretending to be experts, they were unashamedly sales guys and they were upfront about who they worked for. Those practices are now heavily criticised. What we are seeing from new companies is worse, they are covert in who they represent, and they are making huge dollars and using dishonest tactics to meet with people in the first place.

Most of the sales pitches revolve around paying off your mortgage faster (usually quoting numbers like 10 to 15 years earlier), saving interest and reducing your tax. Sounds great, who wouldn’t to pay off their mortgage early and reduce interest and tax?

The strategy they recommend isn’t wrong; it is effectively buying an investment property and utilising a debt recycling strategy. The idea being that you use income and tax benefits from the investment property to reduce your own debt, whilst keeping your deductible debt at the same level (sometimes they are more aggressive and recommend capitalising interest on the deductible debt).

This strategy is fine and, in many cases, a very effective option that good financial planners utilise all the time. However, it is definitely not suitable for everyone. They also do calculations based on current, all-time-low interest rates, capital growth being constant and consistent full occupancy. This is the same as those agents

in the ‘80s quoting on once-in-a-lifetime high interest rates.

What also irks me is the amount of money these guys are making and not disclosing. They are making money on the investment property and commission on the mortgage broking on top of fees related to the advice.

If they were genuinely providing advice, not flogging property and loans, they would tell you to buy any investment property, go get any loan and simply make a fee on the advice they provide.

Be wary of anyone promising something that seems too good to be true – it probably is.

Do you see pop-up messages? Are you redirected to different websites? Does your computer run slowly or freeze?

Are you getting pop-ups? Are your files locked or deleted? Does your computer not start? You may have a virus or malware issue.

10 steps to fixing malware and viruses These are general steps for an experienced user; there are millions of variations of infection types, often experience is the difference between a successful removal and a loss of data.

1. Disconnect your computer from the Internet.

2. Restart your computer in Safe Mode (Windows) – this will start the computer with minimal options and will not begin most malware or viruses.

3. Delete all temporary files – in Windows 10 use Disk Cleanup tool 4. Download and install an anti-virus scanner. I recommend the Microsoft Safety Scanner. Downloading / running multiple scanners from different vendors is encouraged.

5. Download and run Malwarebytes 6. If you can identify the virus or malware, there may be manual

steps required to remove it. Carry these out.

7. Malware often hijacks your web browser homepage or adds in a toolbar. Manually change and remove these.

8. If Windows is working, but some applications are not, then you will need to re-install these programs.

9. If Windows is still problematic, you will need to back-up all your files and re-install your system from scratch.

10. Prevention. Keep all the software on your computer up to date. Use a full security suite, not just an AntiVirus. Be diligent when browsing or clicking on links.

If Windows doesn’t start, then you will need to use a boot CD or USB, we use Hirens BootCD. This is an all in one Boot CD that has a combination of both back-ups, diagnostic and cleaning tools.

Technology means that orthoses covers a much broader range of issues than many think...

Foot orthoses come in many different forms. The basic principles of orthotic therapy, is the application of an aid under the feet to support the arch and correct an abnormal gait.

However, the use of orthoses covers a much broader range.

Orthoses can indeed be applied to a ‘flat foot’ and assist with supporting the arch. But as technology continues to advance in this area of health, we are able to be much more specific and accurate in utilising these devices to target joints and soft tissues in the entire lower limb.

Orthoses are often used in short-term scenarios to help offload injured muscles and tendons in athletes, in assisting in return to play.

We also see athletes of all levels who train or participate in sports that are struggling with an ongoing injury. In these scenarios we are equipped to identify and assess the problem structure and determine how the patient’s gait and foot posture may be contributing.

The application of orthoses in these patients to fine tune their mechanics and maintain a pain free training regime will often lead to complete long term improvement of their pathology.

There is a common misconception that flat feet are the only feet that need orthotic therapy.

High arched feet may not absorb shock evenly and are often linked to stress related injuries. High arched feet are often candidates for orthotic therapy as are other symptomatic feet or knees that may be linked to a functional anomaly.

It is also important to note that podiatrists do not apply orthoses to every painful foot that we see. In some cases, pain is resolved with muscle strengthening, stretching, strapping, dry needle techniques and many other treatment options.

A dangerous sweetener is fine for humans, but can cause major problems for our furry friends...

There are many types of artificial sweeteners becoming more commonly used in human foods. The most concerning is Xylitol. It is found in chewing gum, sweets, toothpaste and sugar substitutes for baking. In humans, it is very slowly absorbed but in dogs it is absorbed rapidly and induces insulin production.

This then causes dangerously low blood sugar levels. This can cause seizures, coma and death. It also causes liver damage which can lead to clotting issues and death. Vomiting is often the first sign of ingestion, other signs include lethargy, diarrhoea and collapse. The effects of Xylitol on cats is not well understood.

How much causes toxicity? The amount that can cause toxicity is very low. It is hard to determine the amount of Xylitol in some foods as its concentration may not be provided. It has been estimated that as little as one piece of gum in a small dog can cause toxicity.

What should I do if my dog has ingested Xylitol? Seek veterinary attention as

soon as possible. Treatment is more successful the earlier it is started. To determine if a toxic amount has been ingested it is important to know the concentration in the product and the weight of the dog. Decontamination may be indicated if ingestion is recent. There is no antidote to Xylitol so supportive therapy is required. Dogs can still die despite treatment, the prognosis is poor if seizures, coma or liver failure is seen.

How do I know if my dog has ingested Xylitol? There is no test for Xylitol but low blood glucose is the main finding on blood tests. There are other causes of low blood glucose.

How can we prevent toxicity? The best means is for Xylitol containing products to not be present in pet owning households. As with most things prevention is far better than cure. If you have any questions regarding Xylitol or other potential toxins, please call the clinic on 4731 3055.

There are breweries in all the main cities. Lots of them. Big and small. From farmhouse breweries to legendary Trappist beer.

And Flanders boasts more than 100 Michelin-starred restaurants and is recognised as having one of the world’s highest densities of top-class venues.

You can even enjoy a six or seven-course meal aboard a tram fully decked out as a modern gourmet restaurant.

But eating and drinking aside, Flanders and its thriving cities is rich in culture, some seriously quirky, such as Manneken Pis (little pee man, in Flemish). It’s a

small bronze fountain statue from the 17th century.

Located two blocks behind the Brussels town hall, the statue is 61cm tall or 24 inches.

There are occasions when the cheeky Manneken Pis is hooked up in different flavours of Belgian beer, which is poured from the fountain tip and given out to the public. Little wonder the most famous inhabitant of Brussels is a popular figure – yet, despite many legendary stories, no one has yet identified his true origin.

On most days, Brussels’ magnificent Grand Place and town hall square – a mixture of styles and periods – is a heaving mass of both locals and tourists. Begun in the 15th century, it was destroyed in the 17th century and renovated in the 19th and 20th centuries, it became a UNESCO World Heritage site 20 years ago.

A tour of the Royal Palace, along with visits to the Cathedral of Saints Michael and Gudula, countless art galleries and museums will keep you busy for at least three days – and that should be the minimum stay in the ‘Capital of Europe’.

Just 26 kilometres by train from Brussels, Leuven is a bustling university city, where there’s a heavy focus on beer consumption – after all, it is the home to the world’s largest brewing company – AB inbev Brewery – producers of Stella Artois, Leffe and Hoegaarden. It produces more than 40 million litres worldwide and has a bigger turnover than Coca Cola – 56.4 billion US dollars in 2017.

Another top drop is Old Leuven blond, inspired by a classic beer whose 18th century popularity led to it being hailed as ‘the king of all drinks’.

Not to be missed in Leuven are the 15th century town hall, interior of St Pieter’s Catholic Church – one of the best examples of late Gothic style – and the Old Market Square, known as the ‘longest bar’ in Europe.

Flanders is renowned for its rich tradition of tapestry.

Although the making of tapestries in Flanders stopped in the 18th century, its art still lives on in places like the De Wit Royal Tapestry Manufacturers in Mechelen. It’s open every Saturday and gives an insight into what makes Flemish tapestries unique.

Mechelen has been called one of Flanders’ most under-rated cities – and also lays claim to having some of Belgium’s famous beers, such as Het Anker’s Maneblusser, a pale ale that dates back to 1687 when the moon projected its reddish glow on the city’s St. Rumbold tower, which was covered in a dense fog.

A drunken man was heard shouting “Fire, fire, the tower is on fire” – but before firefighters could reach the so-called blaze, the moon slowly moved through the fog.

Since then, Mechelenanians have been called the Maneblussers or ‘Moonextinguishers’.

I am a firm believer in education being one of the key factors in keeping children safer around the water, which is why we get out into schools, pre-schools, fetes and community events to talk about Swim Safety, all year round.

It is also why we are supporting the two Swim Safety initiatives running nationwide in Swim Schools this fortnight: Swim Australia’s Annual National Swim Safer Week from November 19-25, and the Australian Swim Schools Association’s Safer Swimming Week from November 26 to December 2.

The themes of both safety campaigns are simple – to prevent drownings and save lives. The campaigns aim to educate children, parents and caregivers about the layers of protection needed to protect our children from harm around water.

These messages, despite being presented slightly differently from one organisation to the other, remain consistent across the major swim safety bodies in Australia. Legendary swim coach Laurie Lawrence’s ‘Kids Alive, Do The Five’ campaign presents the five key safety precautions in a child friendly and easy to remember format (and in song form when presented to children in schools and preschools – just Google

‘Kids Alive Song’ for the tune!). “Fence the pool, shut the gate, teach your kids to swim, (it’s great!), supervise, watch your mate, and learn how to resuscitate”. My four-year-old loves singing this song to anyone who will listen, so it’s a great way to communicate these concepts to small children.

It is no coincidence that you are being bombarded with swim safety information as we head towards the warmer weather and school holidays. Drowning deaths do occur throughout the year, but most undeniably happen in summer (42 per cent). In 2017/18 fatal drowning peaked in December with 40 deaths, followed by January with 38 deaths. Sunday was the most common day for fatal drowning, accounting for 23 per cent of all deaths,

Once you’ve retired, moving into a smaller house or apartment makes a lot of sense. For starters, it can free up both time and cash – a smaller home means there’s less to look after and, in most cases, it will cost less to purchase than the home you’re selling.

Having spent time with people who’ve moved into smaller homes in a retirement community, I’ve found the KonMari Method of de-cluttering a great place to start. Developed by Marie Kondo, author of the best-selling book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, this method encourages people to keep only those things that speak to the heart.

While this may sound a little ‘new age’, it’s really just about discarding items that have outlived their usefulness.

The golden rules of tidying according to the KonMari Method are: Commit yourself to tidying up Make a day and time to start and stick to it.

Imagine your ideal lifestyle Have a clear picture in your mind of how you want your new home to look and feel.

Tidy by category, not by location For example, it’s easier to sort through all of your books at one time than to sort through a living room.

Ask yourself if it sparks joy Apart from essential items, keep only those things that you really love.

Finish discarding first Before re-organising or packing things you want to keep, get rid of everything you don’t want to keep.

Following this method really does make it easier to tackle the practical side of downsizing.

Recent research released by Royal Life Saving Australia reported that 965 children aged 0-4 years drowned in Australia over the last 25 years. Accidental falls into water were recorded as the leading activity resulting in drowning, and swimming pools were the leading location for drowning deaths among young children in Australia, accounting for 52 per cent (2002/03 – 2017/18). We have to do better!

So get involved with the water safety initiatives offered, and start to educate your children as soon as possible!

Luai secures his future enrith has given a strong indication towards their future halves combination, with excitement machine Jarome Luai signing a new twoyear contract extension.

The new deal means the 21-year-old playmaker will remain at the foot of the Mountains until at least the end of the 2021 season.

It is likely that Luai will partner longtime friend and teammate Nathan Cleary in the halves once James Maloney’s time at the club comes to an end. Maloney is off contract at the end of 2020.

“I feel blessed to re-sign with Panthers because Penrith is my home,” Luai said this week.

and later made his international debut for Samoa at the Rugby League World Cup. Luai’s NRL debut came against Newcastle in Round 10 last season before he lit up Panthers Stadium with two tries in a man of the match performance against the New Zealand Warriors.

The 22-year-old is off-contract at the end of 2019 and will no doubt have plenty of potential suitors if he chose to test the market.

eparting Penrith forward Trent Merrin says he’s happy to have his future sorted after signing a four-year deal with English Super League side Leeds.

The 29-year-old, who won a premiership with the Dragons in 2010, has been released from the final two years of his contract with Penrith and will join the Rhinos with immediate effect.

“I have done everything I possibly could in the NRL and this is a great opportunity for me to come to a great club with a fantastic culture and hopefully achieve some goals together,” Merrin said.

“It is good to have clarity about my future, I am looking forward to coming to a new country, stepping outside of my

comfort zone and being part of something special with Leeds.”

Merrin played 72 games for the Panthers and won the Merv Cartwright Medal as the club’s player of the year in 2016.

“Trent Merrin has given our club three years of outstanding service, both on and off the field,” said Panthers Executive General Manager, Phil Gould.

“Panthers played finals football in each of the three seasons he spent at the club.

Apart from the tremendous football he has played, Trent has been instrumental in mentoring the careers of a number of our young players.

Perfect fit as top player joins St Marys for 2019 NATHAN TAYLOR

t Marys will be a force to be reckoned with in 2019 after securing the signature of St George-Illawarra Dragons NRLW player Oneata Schwalger for next season.

The 33-year-old from Melbourne will run out for the St Marys Saints in the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership next year.

A dual international, Schwalger has represented Australia at the 2014 Rugby World Cup and is also a member of the Samoan rugby league team.

While competing at the National Championships earlier this year, Schwalger was identified and contracted by the Dragons for one season.

Known for her aggressive style of play, the mother of two is the sister of former All Blacks prop John Schwalger and began playing league more than a decade ago in New Zealand before moving to Australia.

After a successful stint with the Dragons in the inaugural NRLW competition a few months’ back, Schwalger was keen to link up with a strong club to further enhance her skills in the hopes of securing a new NRLW contract.

“The standard of the NRLW next year will be 100 per cent better, no one’s position is guaranteed and there will be more competition for spots,” Schwalger told the Weekender.

“As long as I get fitter and improve, I can’t see why I won’t be back with the Dragons next year.”

Schwalger, who plays at prop, had a number of clubs to consider for next season but chose the Saints due to their professionalism in the negotiating process.

“I’m 33-years-old and my window to really make the most of it is a short one,” Schwalger said.

“The professionalism St Marys showed when I met them was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. The fact they made the effort to meet me in person was really important.”

St Marys Rugby League Manager, Adam Przybyla, was thrilled to secure Schwalger’s signature.

“Oneata has played at the highest level in rugby union and has just completed her first NRLW season with the St GeorgeIllawarra Dragons,” he said.

“Oneata’s experience, combined with her energy and enthusiasm, will be a huge asset to the group.”

“I’ve raced at the Regatta Centre more times than I’ve had hot dinners. I know the course well as growing up in the Blue Mountains, I used to train on these roads on a daily basis.”

One of the most consistent performers on the global Ironman 70.3 circuit, Appleton kicked off the year with a win at Ironman 70.3 Geelong and he can think of nothing better than book ending 2018 by picking up the 70.3 title this Sunday, where his triathlon career started.

“The start list looks great, with a lot of Aussie talent assembled and with Terenzo Bozzone returning to racing,” Appleton said.

“I’ve raced everyone on the start list quite a few times, and particularly raced the likes of Tim Reed, Tim van Berkel and Craig Alexander a lot.

“It is kind of fun because we are all good friends off the course, but love nothing more than to beat each other out there. It is good for bragging rights.”

Sprinting to the top Jordan Springs youngster hopes to impress at Challenge NATHAN TAYLOR

10-year-old sprinter from Jordan Springs is hoping to get on the podium when he competes for his state at next year’s Trans Tasman Challenge.

The young Penrith Valley Athletics star will represent NSW when they take on New Zealand on January 13 at Campbelltown Athletics Stadium.

The Trans Tasman Challenge pits U11 and U12 athletes from NSW and New Zealand against each other in a variety of track and field events.

Tyler Peken will contest the 100m, 200m and 400m sprint when competition gets underway during the upcoming summer school holidays.

The Year 5 Jamisontown Public School student said he was excited to make the team on his first attempt.

“It was my dream to make the team because I want to do better than my dad, he did little athletics and made the Trans Tasman team when he was younger,” Tyler told the Weekender.

Tyler is one of 25 Australian boys to make the team in his age group. He qualified after strong performances at

the recent Trans Tasman Trials, where he finished first in the 200m sprint.

Also accomplished in OzTag, touch football, rugby league, soccer and cricket, Tyler said little athletics stands out as one of his favourite sports.

Around the grounds CRICKET: Penrith are in a good position to return to the winner’s circle after a strong first day in their Round 6 clash against Eastern Suburbs in the NSW Premier Cricket competition.

Playing in a Two-Day match at Waverley Oval, Penrith won the toss and elected to bat first. Penrith put on a strong batting display before being dismissed for 295. Penrith’s Brent Williams was best with the bat scoring 74. When Eastern Suburbs hit the crease later that day, they fell in a hole straight away and were 3/14 at stumps. Michael Collins is currently best of the bowlers for Penrith taking 1/4. Penrith will look to ice the game when play continues this Saturday morning at Waverley Oval.

GOLF: Richmond Golf Club has won the Club of the Year title in the Western Sydney Region Veteran Golfers Association (WSRVGA) Inter-Club competition, following completion of the final round at Glenmore Heritage Valley Golf Club.

With Richmond already holding a commanding lead in the Club of the Year rankings, members Ken Powell, Judy Benson, John Manczak and Paul Evans took out the day’s team prize to emphatically secure this year’s title for the Hawkesbury-based club. ne of the biggest events on the local sporting calendar, Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney, is back in Penrith this Sunday.

Featuring the best triathletes from Australia and around the world, Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney will take place at various locations across Penrith.

Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney’s fast and scenic course uses the iconic Penrith Lakes at the International Regatta Centre for the swim and offers athletes a bike course that provides amazing views of the Blue Mountains.

The super quick, flat, picturesque run course, which debuted in 2016, takes in the Nepean River along the Great River Walk, before runners return to the Regatta Centre to celebrate with family and friends.

One competitor no stranger to the course is local racer Sam Appleton.

This is Appleton’s hometown event and he is keen to put his local advantage to good use when he takes on Ironman New Zealand champion Terenzo Bozzone, former Ironman 70.3 world champion Tim Reed and Ironman champion Tim van Berkel.
