Fire crews won another battle last weekend, but the war has only just begun. With summer still two weeks away, last Sunday’s fire at Londonderry and Llandilo was simply a warning shot ahead of a dangerous fire season. No homes were lost, but firefighters know property and lives will come under threat in the months that lay ahead. See Page 3 inside

Houses saved as ferocious fire strikes JADE ALIPRANDI
ire crews are warning of a dangerous summer ahead after a bushfire in Londonderry and Llandilo threatened homes last weekend, the second major bushfire in just two weeks. It was too late for residents to evacuate when fire crews arrived at the scene of Castlereagh Nature Reserve in Londonderry just after midday on Sunday, November 12. The combination of the hot weather and winds of up to 70 km/h fanned the fire out of control before crews got to the scene. It took almost 12 hours for firefighters to contain the raging 400 hectare blaze. There were no reports of damage to homes, except for one shed with over 250 firefighters at the scene working to protect over 50 homes that were in close proximity. 24-year-old RFS volunteer Nadia Knox was taken to Nepean Hospital after a tree branch broke off and fell on her shoulder while she was door knocking in the area. She broke her scapular, a part of the shoulder, but is out of hospital and said to be in good spirits. Inspector at Rural Fire Service NSW, Ben Shepherd, said crews did extraordinary work last weekend. “The safest message for residents was
F
to seek shelter and stay indoors while fire crews did amazing work to contain the fire, particularly along Government Road,” he told Weekender. “It’s a warning to people of the potential risk of grass fires this year and people in bushfire prone areas need to be prepared.” Londonderry resident, Melanie Rea, was forced to leave her home unattended as she was out at the time the blaze started. “The fire didn’t leave our mind all day; we were constantly checking and keeping up to date with what was happening,” she said. “It was really hard but you have to know that they are doing everything to take control of the situation and the best thing you can do is to remain calm. “Seeing so many people on the side of the road and not being able to get to their homes was heartbreaking – they didn’t know whether their houses and animals were safe, they were just playing it by ear and hoping for the best.” The fire is believed to have started on The Northern Road in the Castlereagh Nature Reserve. The firefront was stopped along Government Road and Spence Road with the help of several aircraft, including the whopping water bomber ‘Thor’. Police and fire investigators are still working to determine what started the fire.

New prison has positives too I’d probably be safer in prison after saying this, but I honestly don’t have a problem with plans to build a new maximum security prison at Emu Plains. After all, we have to house prisoners somewhere, right? We want more jobs in Penrith, we demand tougher sentences for criminals and we lament when governments invest in other areas and leave Penrith and its surrounds wanting. And yet, it appears we want both our cake and the cutlery with which to eat it. Of course community consultation on any facility that will house maximum security inmates should be thorough and well-planned, and that process will unfold in the months ahead. But at the end of the day, the argument that rapists and murderers are going to be scaling fences and terrorising the good people of Emu Plains is simply ludicrous. And I also highly doubt the property market in Emu Plains is about to receive a significant boost via desperate families of hardened criminals looking to fork out some cash for a new property conveniently located close to their nearest and dearest. The concerns are understandable and will almost certainly be addressed before ground is broken on the new facility, but we need to look at this with some reality and perspective here. A prison facility like this has to go somewhere. To all those asking ‘why Emu Plains’, I ask why not? As long as all the right security measures are in place, I don’t see this as a looming blight on our doorstep.

Will Trump prove doubters wrong? A week on from Donald Trump being elected President, the world has not ended and the sun has come up every single day. I can almost guarantee you it’ll come up every day after Trump officially enters the White House in January, too. It has been incredible over the last week watching Australians become seasoned experts on American politics – and sprouting that expertise on social media. I’m no expert either but here is my take on it. Yes, the election of Trump is weird. No, it’s not all that surprising. The mainstream media, primarily based out of New York and Los Angeles, completely misjudged and misunderstood Middle America when it came to this election. It shows just how out of touch the media has become – right until the last

minute, they were treating Trump and his campaign as one giant joke. Now the joke’s on them. The message delivered to the establishment was clear – America is sick of party politics, entitlement and a lack of real action and vision. Sure, the man they chose to make their point with may not go down as one of the great political leaders of our time, but boy did they make their point. It had nothing to do with Hilary Clinton being a woman. It had nothing to do with email scandals or Bill’s past. It had everything to do with what Clinton’s rise to president would have represented. I’m not a great fan of Trump. Too brash, too many skeletons in the closet, too much dirt. But what Trump represented to America was an opportunity for something different. His rise to President, with no real political ties or background, is quite simply incredible. It’s been extraordinary to watch the vitriolic way in which Clinton supporters have refused to accept the result last week. The truth in all of this is that Trump’s presidency is highly unlikely to be as bad as his critics think it will be. Those predicting the end of the world as we know it are going to be sorely disappointed. The sun will continue to rise. Trump’s election should be a huge warning to Australian politicians. People are sick of stage managed, cardboard cut-out politicians that lack vision and see themselves as entitled to lead. It’s a real wake-up call.

Changes to DA process thrown out
Tanya Davies Member for Mulgoa

evelopment applications (DA) for places of public worship and community centres will no longer have to wait until monthly Council meetings to be dealt with. A decision made in June this year to bring all DAs to Council meetings was overturned on Monday night, after being labelled discriminatory by Councillors. Now, the DAs can again be determined by Council officers, or what is called ‘delegated authority’, with the option for Councillors to bring the items to a meeting if they request. Councillor Greg Davies recommended to give delegates back that authority, which was supported by all Labor councillors and Liberal Ross Fowler. “We are creating work, I don’t think it’s necessary. If anyone wants to bring something before Council by all means, but I think this creates more problems,” he said. “I think it’s a bit discriminatory too, we should just treat every DA the same.” Cr Davies said his request, that secured just enough support for a majority vote, is not about trying to slip through applications without noticing, and that DAs will be assessed on their merit.

SMITH STREET AUTO CENTRE Labor Councillor Karen McKeown added that bringing all said DAs to Council lengthens an already long process for both Council and applicants. “It also puts a fair bit of fear amongst the community about how Council treats people who bring forward DAs or modifications,” she said. “I think [this is] the best use of the office’s time, when there are so many
other significant DAs in the city.” However, Councillor Marcus Cornish, who made the original request to bring all of the DAs to meetings, said Cr Davies’ recommendation is a step backwards. “I think it has been a reasonable answer to a very difficult and contentious issue in Penrith... certain Councillors are fearful for whatever reasons, but I want transparency,” he said.

atients and staff were forced to evacuate Nepean Hospital last Sunday after an electrical fire broke out in the engine room. The hospital and emergency department remained open during the incident while over 50 patients and staff were moved outside. Nepean Hospital Acting General Manager, Brett Williams, told the Weekender the evacuation was for precautionary reasons. “Patients were evacuated from four
wards at Nepean Hospital’s North Block on Sunday afternoon due to an electrical fire,” he said. “The evacuation was undertaken as a precaution and the fire was quickly extinguished.” The patients and staff were given the all clear to go back into the hospital within the hour, with no one injured as a result of the incident. “There was no damage or smoke in the wards and patients were returned to the ward when it was safe to do so,” Mr Williams said. An investigation into how the fire started is continuing.

Short term pain as more parking lost DALE DRINKWATER
o somewhere else – that’s the message from the NSW Government to commuters trying to park at Penrith Station. From Tuesday, November 22, 250 car spaces will be closed in the ground-level car park north of Penrith Station, while additional levels are constructed. The Government has asked commuters to consider alternative public transport options or park at nearby stations over the 10 months of construction. But this isn’t an option for locals like 23-year-old Peta Maguire, who already struggles to find car parking in four different car parks surrounding Westfield for work. “I only live at St Marys, but I have to leave one hour earlier than my shift so I can try to find parking – that’s time I could be doing other things with my life instead of driving around in circles,” she told the Weekender. Although parking is offered for Westfield staff for just $5 for eight hours, Ms Maguire said it’s basically a free-for-all. “It’s just a boom gate, you stick your ticket in and you can pay it at any time during the day, so anyone could be parking up there, commuters, customers, it’s a bit of a nightmare,” she said.
G

“People don’t even park in proper spaces around here, they are up on kerbs, in the grass – anywhere they can find a park.” With no alternative car spaces identified during construction, news that another 250 spaces will be lost ahead of the busiest shopping period of the year has astonished Ms Maguire. “It’s crazy, it’s absolutely insane that they would be doing this over the Christmas period,” she said. “They’ve got to come up with a different solution which they don’t have just yet... of course they don’t, they’re government.” The end result will be a second 350 space multi-storey car park, that Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said will result in a total of 1000 spaces available at the end of construction. “All available land owned by Transport for NSW (TFNSW) is already being used for car parking,” he said. “TFNSW continues to talk to adjoining land owners about alternative parking arrangements during construction. “The long term benefits of increased car parking at Penrith Train Station far outweigh any short term inconveniences, the alternative is to do nothing and let the problem get worse.” Parking at Penrith Station has reached crisis point, with car parks on the south side of the station generally full as early as 7.00am.

COUNCIL BRIEFS ● From January 2017, the State Government will increase subsidies for community preschools. This change allows children in their final year before school to access up to 600 hours of preschool at just $22 per day. Research shows that children who participate in 600 hours of quality early childhood education in the year before school are more likely to be socially, cognitively and emotionally ready for school. The subsidy is available through all Council-owned community preschools, enrolments for 2017 are open now. Visit penrithcity.nsw.gov.au/services/children or call 4732 7844 to secure your spot. ● The White Ribbon Twilight River Walk will take place on Friday, 25 November between 5.30pm–7.30pm. There will be a 3.5km walk from Weir Reserve to Tench Reserve. Speeches and White Ribbon Oath reading will commence at 6.30pm and there will be a free shuttle bus back to Weir Reserve as well. Penrith Council is proud to support White Ribbon Day to help bring an end to violence against women in our community. More time given to man accused of stalking student
Prosecutors have requested further time to compile a brief of evidence against a man accused of stalking a Jamison High School student. It is understood police will rely on as many as 80 statements and 45 witnesses to prosecute their case against Paul Scott Howes. The 32-year-old is charged with 24 counts of ‘stalk with intend to fear’ and 17 counts of ‘stalk student while attending school’, which are alleged to have occurred between June 2010 and May 2016. Howes was arrested and denied bail in June this year following ongoing investigations into reports a child had been allegedly approached and photographed in the Penrith area. However, he was at conditional liberty last Friday, appearing before Penrith Local Court from the gallery while his matter was briefly mentioned. The prosecution requested extended brief orders, citing outstanding phone records and civilian witness statements as the reason for the delay. Howes is due back in court on February 3 when he is required to confirm his position. He has previously pleaded not guilty to the crimes.
“You could have killed your children,” Magistrate warns
A Penrith woman who drove under the influence of drugs with her kids in the car has been placed on a 12 month good behaviour bond. Rebecca Bourke, 35, fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with DUI and negligent driving. The court heard the mother-of-four had woken up on the morning of the offence to a needle being put in her arm by her now ex-partner. Believing she had removed the syringe before any drugs were injected, she later drank a glass of water she contends was
spiked with meth amphetamines. After dropping two of her children at school, she began to feel light headed on the way home, resulting in a collision. “You could have killed your children, you could have killed yourself,” Magistrate Margaret McGlynn said. Magistrate McGlynn said while “frightening if true”, she did not fully believe the defendant’s explanation as to how the drugs got in her system, but was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt due to her previous good record. She was fined $220 and ordered to enter into a 12 month good behaviour bond without conviction.
Man who drove to avoid argument banned until 2021
A Penrith man who drove while disqualified in order to “keep the peace” with his ex has paid dearly for the crime. Penrith Local Court heard Paul Phillip Osborne received a call from his ex-partner requesting he drop off some items to her at her work. But when he told her he couldn’t drive, she threw a “tantrum” and he simply drove to avoid an argument. “If you keep driving while disqualified you’re going to end up in jail,” Magistrate Margaret McGlynn said. He was convicted, directed to undertake 100 hours of community service and added a further two years to his current disqualification, extending his ban to 2021.
Third time not so lucky for driver who likes burnouts
A man who notched up his third burnout conviction has been hit with a $600 fine and told to take a good look at himself. Ryan Westcott, 31, faced Penrith Local Court after he was nabbed driving dangerously. Magistrate Margaret McGlynn told the father-of-two his behaviour was disrespectful to other road users and showed a lack of regard for his licence privileges.
“Well, Mr Westcott, you’ve got a long driving record,” Magistrate Margaret McGlynn said. “So back in 2002 you were charged with a burnout, then in 2009 another one and here we are in 2016.” He was convicted and fined $600.
Man convicted after fourth drink driving offence
Stephen Ashley Forbes has been handed a seven-month suspended sentence after pleading guilty to his fourth drink driving offence. Mr Forbes appeared before Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with mid-range drink driving. Magistrate Margaret McGlynn disagreed with Mr Forbes’ lawyer that the threshold for jail sentences had not been crossed. “You had eight schooners over a period of hours and you had nothing to eat,” she said. “You knew you shouldn’t have been driving.” He was convicted to a seven-month term of imprisonment, suspended on him entering into a Section 12 good behaviour bond. “If you breach the bond you’ll serve the term in full-time custody,” she warned. He was disqualified from driving for 12 months.
Community service for man who caused bad accident
A man has been punished with 150 hours of unpaid work after pleading guilty to dangerous driving. Gary William Spicer, 28, fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with ‘negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm’. The court heard the father-of-two was on his way to work when he collided with another vehicle, impacting three victims, seriously injuring one. The court was told the defendant had been observed by witnesses on a number of occasions, swerving out into oncoming
traffic then correcting back onto the other side before the accident. Magistrate Margaret McGlynn refused to consider a Section 10 good behaviour bond, telling the defence it would be “inappropriate”, despite the crime appearing to be out of character. “There is a need in sentencing to deter you from every behaving this way again... and to reflect the injury to the victim,” she said. He was convicted, ordered to undertake 150 hours of community service and disqualified from driving for two years.
Jail sentence for man who stole and damaged vehicle
A man has been sentenced to six months jail after pleading guilty to stealing a car. Appearing by video link from jail where he is currently serving a term, Rhys Brian Surtees faced Penrith Local Court for sentencing, charged with ‘take and drive conveyance’. The court heard the offence came off the back of two prior similar matters. The 24-year-old was directed to pay $1,253 to the owner for damages to the car and a fence after he collided with the barrier on Andrews Road. He was also charged, but not convicted, with ‘driving with an expired licence’, ‘negligent driving’, and ‘failing to give particulars’.
Good record ensures man keeps licence
Matthew William Wright has managed to keep his licence despite pleading guilty to mid-range drink driving. Mr Wright faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday where he was handed a twoyear good behaviour bond. Magistrate Margaret McGlynn noted the defendant had been driving since 1989 and had no “sinister offence” on his record. She found the matter proved without proceeding to conviction due to his “unblemished character”.

Police Snapshot COMPILED BY JADE ALIPRANDI
St Clair: Police catch man in covert operation
A man will face court next month, charged by detectives from State Crime Command’s Sex Crimes Squad after a covert online investigation into child exploitation. In June this year, Strike Force officers began engaging online with a man from St Clair. Police will allege in court the man believed he was speaking to the mother of an 11-year-old girl and that he made numerous sexually explicit comments regarding the child. About 4pm on Wednesday, November 9, the man was arrested at a St Clair home and taken to Penrith Police Station. A search warrant was also executed at the home, during which police seized several electronic devices. The man was later charged with ‘using a carriage service for the purpose of child pornography’. He was granted strict conditional bail and is due to appear before Penrith Local Court on Monday, December 12.
St Marys: Teenager’s phone stolen in late night robbery
A teenage girl was robbed late last week in St Marys. At about 11.30pm on Friday, November 11, a 16-year-old female was walking on Inglis Avenue, St Marys. She was walking with her head down looking at her phone. As she crossed the road two males rode past her, one riding a bike and one riding a scooter. It’s alleged the male on the bike snatched the victim’s phone out of her hands. The two males rode away, last seen heading west on Mitchell Street. One male is described as Caucasian in appearance, approximately 17-years-old, with a solid build, six foot tall, longish curly hair and tanned skin, and was riding a black bike. The second male is described as 16 to
17-years-old, Caucasian in appearance, slightly tanned skin, approximately five foot six inches tall, wearing shorts and a t-shirt, and was riding a scooter. Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Glenmore Park: Teen injured after police shut down party
Police were called in to close down an out of control party last week, by the party host. At about 10pm on Friday, November 11, police were called to a residence on William Howell Drive, Glenmore Park, in relation to a noise complaint. The host of the party told police that the gathering of 20 people had grown into a party of 100 people, most of whom the host didn’t know. “At the request of the host, police shut down the party,” a police spokesperson said. “Additional police were called in to assist as it was evident most people were highly intoxicated.” While police were ushering people out of the residence, a number of fights occurred. During this time a number of bottles were thrown in the vicinity. A 16-year-old boy was struck by one to the face and had to seek further treatment at Nepean Hospital for a 2cm wound after both police and paramedics rendered aid to him.
South Penrith: Houses damaged in bizarre crash
Police are still investigating after a driver of a vehicle ran into two houses on Monday morning. At about 4.40am on Monday, November 14, police were called to a residence on Racecourse Road, South Penrith, after reports of a car accident. “The car went across the front gardens of two properties and essentially became wedged between the two houses,” a police spokesperson said

What if I get arrested? Police have a lot of powers not afforded to ordinary citizens in carrying out their work. The most well-known power is the power to arrest. A Police Officer can arrest you if: • They catch you committing an offence. • They have reasonable grounds to suspect you have committed an offence. • You have breached bail conditions. • There is a warrant out of your arrest. • You are breaching the peace. • They need to serve an AVO on you. Interestingly private citizens are also afforded some of these powers, known as a “citizen’s arrest”. An ordinary citizen can arrest you if you are committing an offence or you have committed an offence. There are certain obligations that police have when they are arresting you. For example, they should tell you that you are under arrest, tell you why you have been arrested and the Police Officer should also indicate to you his or her name and the Local Area Command in which they work.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY
Police Officers are allowed by law to use as much force as is necessary to arrest you. Unreasonable force by a Police Officer can constitute assault however the best way to ensure that you are not victim to any type of unnecessary force is to cooperate with Police if they are arresting you. It is important that you remember that if you are resisting arrest, even if you think you are not guilty of the offence of which you are accused, you are committing an offence. Further, if you are violent while resisting arrest you could also be charged with assaulting Police. After being placed under arrest, you will be taken to a police station. It is at this point that you have the right to contact a lawyer if you wish to do so. Police are only required to wait for a period of two hours for your lawyer to arrive. Being arrested is an incredibly stressful process even if you are guilty of the offence of which you are accused. The best course of action is to cooperate with police and contact a lawyer as soon as possible who can advise you of your rights.
Woman assaulted with tyre iron A woman was hit by another woman and robbed after a driver of a vehicle stopped and asked her for directions. At about 10.50pm on Sunday, a 21-year-old North St Marys woman was walking on Phillip Street, St Marys. It’s alleged a vehicle, only described as an early model white vehicle with a female driver, stopped next to her.
There were three females in the vehicle and the front passenger asked the woman for directions. After that, one of the occupants asked for a cigarette. The 21-year-old started to walk away when the front passenger allegedly got out of the vehicle and struck her with a tyre iron, before robbing her. The woman has minor injuries.

Professional lessons important to prepare youth for the road JADE ALIPRANDI
arents are being encouraged to seek professional driving lessons for their children at the start of their learning experience rather than towards the end. Last month a learner driver hit a mother and her eight-year-old daughter in Jordan Springs, but a local driving instructor said despite this, learner drivers are actually some of the safest drivers on our roads. Managing Director and Accredited Driving Instructor at Australian Road Safety Academy, Kyle Austin, said the majority of accidents happen in the first six months of solo driving. “It’s rare for learner drivers to have an accident – they’re actually the least at risk drivers on our roads,” he said. “Close to 10 times the amount of red P-plate drivers are having accidents versus learner drivers immediately after getting their P’s.” Mr Austin said supervising drivers need to do all they can to ensure learner drivers are fully prepared. “When drivers first get behind the wheel, it’s important to start in a low risk environment where there is limited hazards, pedestrians and traffic,” Mr Austin said.

Airport
Airport another step closer to reality • Over 40 environmental controls announced • Airport Plan could be signed off before Christmas DALE DRINKWATER
and at Badgerys Creek identified for the proposed airport could become a fully-fledged airport site by the end of this year. Minister for the Environment Josh Frydenberg has created over 40 environmental controls for Western Sydney Airport’s construction and operation, which means the Department of Infrastructure has the ability to authorise the start of the first stage of its development. President of the Luddenham Progress Association, Wayne Willmington, said after conversations with Minister for Urban Infrastructure Paul Fletcher, he expects the Airport Plan will be signed-off by the end of December. “The determination will be this year, which will make it an airport, not a proposed airport,” Mr Willmington told the Weekender. While this is not great news for landowners on the proposed airport site, Mr Willmington said many other residents in the Luddenham area are happy with some of the environmental controls. “A lot of the environmental issues affect people in the Mountains, but there are
L
some things Luddenham locals are happy with,” he said. “The government has revised the noise assessment for the airport construction and of ground-based operations, and that’s been a big bone of contention for locals in the immediate area.” He added that getting fuel to and from the airport has been a major concern for Luddenham locals, which is also being reviewed. “Now that the government has actually realised that there’s a social, economic and environmental cost of road transport, they are talking about a review of a fuel pipe,” he said. “One of the important things is that it seems to me the government has listened to people’s concerns.” Penrith Council raised their own concerns and said they will investigate how they have been considered in the environmental controls. “We are looking at the conditions now and how they fit with Council’s position on maximising benefits and minimising the impacts of the airport on our community,” Penrith Mayor, John Thain said. He said it’s very important for the community that everyone understands the environmental conditions.
The indicative airport layout in the September 2016 Revised Airport Plan In a statement, Mr Fletcher said now the environmental conditions are in place “a single runway airport can go ahead without unacceptable impacts to the environment”.

Ayres to raise concerns with Minister Public meeting held in Emu Plains as fears grow over plan to build new maximum security prison DALE DRINKWATER
ver 100 furious residents attended a public meeting last Thursday night, protesting against a NSW Government proposal to increase the number of inmates at Emu Plains Prison. “They’re not happy at all,” Councillor Karen McKeown told the Weekender. “People were really angry they haven’t been consulted about such a momentous project coming to Emu Plains, to a very quiet community.” The NSW Government plans to increase the current 200 low security prison inmates to include an additional 240 high security female and 400 high security male inmates. Before the NSW Department of Corrective Services has even handed a proposal to Penrith Council, Council has made a submission against it. Corrective Services NSW said they are finalising a proposal for the expansion and won’t be consulting with the community until early next year, when a Review of Environmental Factors (REF) is released. “The proposed expansion of this centre will not only help ease the prisoner population challenge, but will also make a
O
Around 100 people attended the public meeting in Emu Plains significant contribution to the local area,” Commissioner Peter Severin said. “Emu Plains Correctional Centre already employs more than 70 staff and this new
proposal could see hundreds more jobs created, both during construction and when operational.” However, Member for Penrith Stuart
Ayres has raised some questions himself in regards to the proposal. “Whilst I appreciate the time it will take for Corrective Services to develop the REF, I do have concerns relating to the proposal including impacts on flooding and flood evacuation routes, lighting, noise, possible traffic changes, impacts on adjoining commercial properties and the amenity of Emu Plains,” he said. “I am listening to my community and will raise their concerns with the Minister for Corrections.” Mr Ayres assured that the community will have the chance to consider all the factors of a proposal for a prison at Emu Plains, and have their say before a decision is made. “It is important for the community to know that no decision has been made by Corrective Services to construct a new prison at the existing Emu Plains site,” he said. Online responses from the community were mixed, with some suggesting jobs will be worth it, while others fear the loss of value of homes in the area, which has a strong community feel. simple day out to get an image framed has ended in a lifechanging win for Reena Adhikari Bhattarai. Ms Adhikari Bhattarai, from Ropes Crossing, went to Penrith Homemaker Centre earlier this month, and her simple purchase won her a brand new Kia Rio. “It’s my first ever brand new car in my life,” the 38-year-old told the Weekender. “My partner and I only have one car and we were looking for another one because one of us has to catch public transport.
Now I can have my own car, and it’s going to make life so easy, it really means a lot.” Ms Adhikari Bhattarai is the second lucky winner of Penrith Homemaker Centre’s ‘Win Three Cars in 50 Days’ competition, that has already received a massive 30,000 entries. There is still one last chance for locals to win the third and final car, by simply purchasing any item from one of the 41 stores in the Homemaker Centre and following the relevant instructions. General Manager for Property at Harvey Norman, James Scott, said he was delighted there’s a third chance for someone to win a brand new car.

Located in William Hart Crescent, Thornton, the homes were officially opened by Minister for Disability Services, John Ajaka, and Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, last Friday, November 11. “These purpose-built, accessible living spaces will make such a difference to the lives of the residents,” Mr Ajaka said. “I am delighted by AFFORD’s commitment to providing services that are focused on the holistic needs of people with disability through thoughtfully creating accessible and inclusive homes.” The project is a culmination of three years of planning, design and consultation with builders and clients to create homes that are tailored for the needs of residents. Newest resident Jean Welch said she was excited to start her new way of living.

ver 300,000 Australians stand to lose some pension entitlements come January 1 next year. Centrelink asset testing will be changing, directly impacting on the pensions of Australians. The upcoming changes means that locals planning for retirement or who have already retired may need to adjust their financial plans to account for a decrease in or complete loss of their pensions. The team at financial planning organi-

sation, Invest Blue, are holding a seminar on Wednesday, November 23, featuring guest speakers explaining the new Centrelink changes, as well as what you can do to minimise any negative impact on your retirement income. Invest Blue Financial Planner, Michael Craig, said it would be great if locals attended the seminar. “We understand the gravity of the situation many people may now find themselves in, which is why we have prepared a seminar to assist people in understanding where to go next,” he said. ing their credit score, which could have a major impact down the track. “You could also be penalised for not sticking to the repayment requirements by paying late payment fees and also getting a black mark against your credit file,” she said. “A damaged credit history could mean you have trouble qualifying for a loan in the future as this is how creditors assess your ability to manage and repay debt.” Not ignoring the issue is important. “If you’re struggling to meet repayments talk with your provider to negotiate the outstanding debt before it impacts your credit score,” Ms Hassan said.

Brave firefighters do a wonderful job
Keep the new prison out of my backyard
Absolute thanks to all the ground crew, air crew and frontline people. I watched the fire move then flare up again, I was anxious, but very concerned for the people in the thick of it. Was a lot to comprehend considering it was only nine days from the last one. If this is arson, laws need changing pronto. I live in Llandilo and want to thank all the people trying to help us, from the bottom of my heart. TRISH ARCHER, VIA FACEBOOK
I live nearby and am not happy at all. Keep the minimum security dairy operational. Not scared of escaped prisoners, I don’t really want to see their scumbag family and friends moving into the area, which will see houses dropping in value. I also wonder how many of those saying stop being a NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) actually live in the area. STACEY MANDEE, VIA FACEBOOK
Emergency services could do with donations Volunteer BFF, surf lifesavers, SES – they all do an amazing job. Sad fact is a lot of people think they get paid for what they do. If you can, help out by taking some water, food etc to them or give a good size donation; this will allow better equipment which will make their job easier and safer. Thank you to all who battled the flames. CHERYL MYERS, VIA FACEBOOK
Night work on the Great Western Highway from Sunday 20 November As part of the $70m upgrade of Gipps Street and Kent Road (the Werrington Arterial Road), Roads and Maritime Services is upgrading the Gipps Street intersection at the Great Western Highway. The upgrade will include work on the existing traffic signals.
Rest in peace, Justin
To reduce the impact on motorists, the work to upgrade the traffic signals will take place at night. Work will begin on Sunday 20 November and take four shifts to complete.
Thank you for your patience during this important work.

“It’s really good here,” she told Weekender. “I get to help with the cooking and cleaning, do my jobs, it’s only walking distance to get to Penrith and the staff are really helpful.” To encourage an easy transition into the group homes, AFFORD has provided residents with skills-based training courses to develop their abilities in cooking, cleaning, sharing space, budgeting, travel and safety in the community. The last homes of the project are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2017.

Aussies struggling with credit cards Nearly one in three Australians have defaulted on their credit card repayments, with men most likely to miss repayments compared to women, according to finder. com.au, Australia’s most visited comparison website. Almost one in seven (14.4 per cent) Australians have defaulted on a personal loan, while over 10.3 per cent of borrowers have been behind on their mortgage. The finder.com.au survey of 2,005 Australians found 17.5 per cent had missed one credit card repayment, while a further 14.9 per cent had missed more than one. Prison shouldn’t have any negative impact We all get outraged when judges don’t give custodial sentences for crimes the community think deserve them (or long enough sentences), well we have to be able to have enough prison room to put them. Do the current prisoners in the current prison cause any problem? Other than more buildings on vacant land and more jobs in the area, I doubt there will be any impact on the local area. More than fashionably late after car accident DALE DRINKWATER
nita Cole’s wedding day checklist included many things, but she could never have prepared for what was about to happen. Everything was running smoothly last Friday afternoon, when the Jordan Springs bride climbed into the back of a car to complete her final task of the day – make it to her wedding safely, and on time. However, a fast moving truck made sure that wouldn’t happen, when it collided with the car carrying her three bridesmaids at the intersections of The Northern Road and Kings Hill Road, Mulgoa. “I was in the car in front of them with my Dad,” she told the Weekender. “I turned around and I just saw the car spin and the whole back of it was gone, I thought they were dead, I was inconsolable.” It was around 4.30pm, and Mrs Cole was just six kilometres from her final destination at Mulgoa Valley Receptions where her partner Tim was waiting patiently for her to arrive. “We ended up being about an hour-anda-half late,” she said. Mrs Cole said members of both the Wallacia and Regentville Rural Fire
A
Brigades attended the accident promptly, and went above and beyond in helping as best as they could. “We were there for a while. The firies wanted to call an ambulance for the girls to check them over, but instead of standing there they escorted us to the reception and the ambulance met us there,” she said. Jody Preston, Captain of Wallacia Rural Fire Brigade, said they did what they had to do. “It was a special day so we thought about how we could help, and it was only to Mulgoa,” he said. Mr Preston said the intersection is highly dangerous and is renowned for car accidents. “Cars that want to turn right off The Northern Road onto Kings Hill Road stop on the road. There’s a guard rail on the left of The Northern Road, and cars coming behind the stopped vehicle think they can fit between the car and the guard rail,” he said. “In this instance, the driver’s side front corner of the small truck’s tray has hit the back of the white car. It happens a lot up there because people aren’t paying attention and run up the back of others.” If nothing else, the newly married couple have a great story to tell.

State Politics
Injection of funds desperately needed ensure high priority maintenance items are undertaken first.” She said the Government’s highest priority is school safety and compliance, which is dealt with in addition to maintenance funding. St Clair High School, which had a fire rip through the school in 2014, needs $1.36 million in maintenance funding – the highest in the Mulgoa electorate. In Penrith, no schools reached over the $1 million mark, with Jamisontown Public School having the electorate’s highest backlog at $920,000. The Department spokesperson said over the next two years, $3.8 million will be spent in Londonderry on planned and priority maintenance, just half of its total backlog of $7.8 million. Member for Londonderry, Prue Car, said the money needs to be injected into schools in the area urgently so children don’t fall behind. “Western Sydney kids are being forced to learn in second class environments because the Baird Government has failed to address the growing maintenance backlog,” she told the Weekender. “Principals and teachers are doing the best they can with the resources that they have.” In 12 months, the state’s entire school maintenance backlog increased by $43 million, to now $775 million.

ver $20 million is needed from the NSW Government to deflate the ballooning school maintenance backlog affecting schools in the local area. Of the 67 schools across the Penrith, Londonderry and Mulgoa electorates, three need at least a whopping $1.3 million, and two are in St Marys. Chifley College Dunheved Campus and St Marys Senior High School need $1.62 million and $1.74 million respectively, to fix issues such as leaky roofs, carpets, painting, problematic toilets and broken windows. St Marys Senior High School’s principal refused to comment on exactly what maintenance issues are affecting the 900 students at the school, instead redirecting questions to the NSW Department of Education. A Department spokesperson said the largest increase in maintenance funding in the last 20 years of $330 million was allocated in the 2016-17 NSW State Budget. “This increase in funding will target roofs, floor coverings and painting, as well as other backlog maintenance works selected by school principals,” she said. “The department is currently consulting with principals to plan these works to

Police to blitz roads across the state Traffic and Highway Patrol officers have initiated a statewide operation to target road users putting themselves and others at risk at a time when the road toll has reached 342 so far this year. Operation Saturation – part of Operation Toward Zero – is a high-visibility operation concluding on November 27, 2016. The operation will be focusing on speeding, illegal mobile phone use, seatbelt and helmet compliance, driver fatigue and drink and drug driving. Traffic and Highway Patrol Acting Commander, Assistant Commissioner
Mayor’s News
Michael Corboy, said the responsibility of reducing road trauma lies with every person using the road. “Drivers, riders, cyclists, passengers and pedestrians all have to play a part in assisting us to bring this tragic and avoidable loss of life to an end,” Assistant Commissioner Corboy said. “We will have more officers, more often, at more locations to detect, stop and take those road users not obeying the rules off the roads.” So far this year, 342 people have died on NSW roads.

White Ribbon Day Walk At Penrith Council, we are proud to support White Ribbon Day to help bring an end to violence against women in our community. I will be leading the White Ribbon Day Twilight River Walk from Weir Reserve to Tench Reserve on November 25 and I ask that as many people from the Penrith community come and join me. The walk will start at Weir Reserve at 5.30pm and finish at Tench Reserve with the White Ribbon Oath reading at 6.30pm. Don’t forget to bring comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and a hat! There will be food stalls and live music at Tench Reserve until 7.30pm and a free shuttle bus back to Weir Reserve from 6.30pm. You can also purchase White Ribbon merchandise on the night with all proceeds going to the White Ribbon Foundation. Domestic violence is a serious problem which impacts not only individu-
als, but families and members of our community. Recent statistics show that nearly three women are killed every week by a former or current partner. Domestic violence should not be just thought of as physical abuse, it can take many different forms including intimidation, coercion or isolation, emotional, sexual and financial abuse. Violence against women is underreported and statistics show that a victim of violence is more likely to discuss and disclose their experience to a friend or family member than to the police or another public authority. A change in people’s attitudes towards violence is needed. Building greater equality and respect between men and women can reduce attitudes that support or ignore domestic violence. Let’s walk together and pledge to stop domestic violence.

Young locals at the pop-up apprenticeship recruitment service in Penrith
0 local youngsters landed jobs immediately, and another 30 are one step closer to finding work, after attending a pop-up apprenticeship recruitment interview at Westfield Penrith last week. The mobile recruitment service devised by Apprenticeship Careers Australia (ACA) comes at the busiest time of the year, as students finish school and look to start work before going on holidays. ACA NSW Manager, Luke Radford, said the pop-up was about promoting career opportunities for youth.
1
“This is the peak season for hiring apprentices and trainees, so we’ve got dozens of local employers looking to hire in fields such as cookery, automotive, carpentry and sales,” he said. And they are hiring, with the Employment Department 2016 report showing that 74.2 per cent of vocational education and training graduates found employment within six months. That is compared to just 67.4 per cent of bachelor degree graduates finding employment within four months of graduating. “Employers want people with work experience,” Mr Radford said.

Bandy boys set themselves a hairy challenge 14 staff members from St Marys Band Club take up the call to raise money for men’s health JADE ALIPRANDI
team of 14 men from St Marys Band Club are currently seeing who can grow the best moustache, all for a good cause. Movember, held annually in November, is a global initiative, raising funds to go towards research for men’s health to help men live happier, healthier, longer lives. Organiser of the Band Club fundraiser, Matt Green, said it’s a cause close to his heart. “I’ve participated the last three or four years so I thought why not get more people involved this year,” he said. “It’s a great cause and a fun way for guys to get involved in fundraising for issues that really matter and affect them.” The Movember Foundation invests in the three key areas of prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention, helping research cures for these diseases. Club Communications staff member, Amanda Shepherd, said it’s great to see the guys from the club getting so involved. “It’s really heartwarming to see – it shows there are people still out there that want to get behind us,” she said. enrith is about to get a new pop-up restaurant but only for four weeks, so locals better get in quick. Chip Cartel will be taking over the Peachtree Hotel’s Beer Garden from Saturday, November 26 to Saturday, December 17. Only available on Saturday nights, brothers Josh and Zac Makari will be rolling their truck into the popular nightspot and firing up the fryers. The pair say they will be letting their loaded gourmet fries and burgers do the talking. Their home-style fries are topped with gourmet ingredients to create their “mouth-watering” menu. Together with ‘Speedy Gonzales’
turnaround times and hunger busting portions, their legion of satisfied chip connoisseurs is growing by the fry. “The Cartel Fries is our signature dish,” Zac Makari said. “The fries are topped with melt-inyour-mouth slow-cooked pulled lamb, American cheese, Mexican cheese, our secret Cartel sauce, tomato, lettuce, dill pickles, and Spanish onions. They’re chips you would kill for.” Toppings include, but aren’t limited to, pepperoni, lamb, bacon, Mexican beans, cheese, feta, tomato, pickles and a wide selection of sauces. “The Cartel Burger is our other signature dish, which is basically The Cartel Fries, with a soft milk bun,” Mr Makari said. The Peachtree Hotel is located at 54 Peachtree Road, Penrith.

Adventure of a lifetime for students DALE DRINKWATER
he 2017 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge is going to be more challenging than ever before, with entrants now required to travel the same distance, but use less solar panels. Our very own solar team from Western Sydney University (WSU) are currently designing their next engineering feat, that will travel 3,000 kilometres from Darwin to Adelaide, powered only by the sun. Design Lead, Saamiul Bashar, said this year’s change in regulations means the team will have to think smarter on an already tough task. “The most significant regulation change for this challenge is the reduction in the number of solar cells we have, going from six metres squared to four metres squared,” he said. “Overall, this means the cars will be much smaller, and we’ll be getting less energy. “However, due to general improvement in efficiency such as aerodynamics and suspension, we expect to achieve the same speed as the last challenge on just two thirds of the energy.” The team are currently in design mode, and manufacturing on the solar car – that can be no longer than five metres and no

The 2017 Western Sydney University Solar Team wider than 2.2 metres – will begin in the next three months. WSU will be entering in the Challenger Class, the hardest of three classes in the competition, that requires cars to be smaller and sleeker but with good driver vision. Over seven days from October 8 to 15
2017, one driver at a time will take the solar car from Darwin, through Katherine, Dunmurra, Tennant Creek, Barrow Creek, and onto Alice Springs. From there, they will head to Kulgera, Coober Pedy, Glendambo and Port Augusta before crossing the finish line in Adelaide.
Once the teams have left their starting point, they must travel as far as they can until 5pm where they will set up camp wherever they stop in the desert. The Bridgestone World Solar Challenge requires all teams to be fully self sufficient, but Bridgestone reassures it’s all worth it, for the adventure of a lifetime.

Santa to meet thousands of kids after arriving at Westfield
Think twice before buying a pet as a gift this Christmas

ocals are being urged to think twice before purchasing a furry friend for their kids this festive season. While a pet can make a perfect present, there are responsibilities that come with it, most of which can fall back on the parent and not the child. Glenmore Park local Anthea McGintyRice has been there, done that, after seeing first hand how this can happen with her three children and four pets. “My 18-year-old got our first dog for her sixth birthday and I did try to get her to do the chores that comes with having an animal but it slowly fell back on me – the novelty eventually wears off,” she said. “My 11-year-old and 13-year-old have to feed both dogs and both cats at night now or I told them the pets will have to go.” Ms McGinty-Rice said there are so many things to consider before buying or adopting a pet. “It’s not a impulse buy,” she said. “You need to think about the cost, the time it takes to look after the pet, the fact the animals aren’t small forever, the temperament of the animal you’re getting, any family allergies, and the maintenance the pet may require. “One of the big things for us is when we go away we have to foot the vet bill,

anta has made it to Penrith for the festive season and is currently calling Westfield home. Arriving in style in his sleigh with his famous reindeer last Saturday, November 12, the big man is available for family photos up until Christmas Eve. Westfield Penrith Centre Manager, Paul Stonebridge, told the Weekender it’s an exciting time of year for everyone. “Santa’s arrival means Christmas is in full swing here at Westfield Penrith,” he said.
S
“It’s one of our favourite events of the year because it brings families together and gets great reactions from the kids. “Every time the big man arrives we look forward to creating a colourful new event full of Christmas characters – from Mrs Claus to helper elves and even Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.” Mr Stonebridge said the festive season is something special. “When kids sit down and talk about their Christmas wishes, wide eyed and excited, that’s the magic of the festive season,” he added. Locals can head down from 9am to 5pm each day to get a photo with Santa.
Anthea, Arabella and Monique Rice which can be extremely expensive, and the fact that we aren’t home a lot on weekends and during the week meaning the animals are left on their own – there’s a lot to consider.” When pets are bought around Christmas or on impulse, the result can be disastrous with many animals left without homes and are either brought back to the shop or dumped on animal shelters. The RSPCA recommends asking yourself if you and your family are prepared to care for a pet its whole life; if you can afford the ongoing costs; if you understand how to care for a pet; if you have the time; and if you have suitable accommodation with adequate space.

BUSINESS H How does your internal marketing rate? m
What the three key types of insurances mean to you

arketing is one of the first things any new business has to tackle – and it is an ongoing strategy for all businesses. Most of the time, when we think of ‘marketing’ strategies, it is things like advertising, social media, billboards, direct mail/email, brochures and so on. All of those are what I term ‘external marketing’: they are all ways to promote your business to potential customers in an attempt to convert them to paying customers. Careful and measured attention should be spent on these strategies as most of us don’t have an unlimited marketing budget, and we want to get the most value for our dollars. But have you considered how important your ‘internal marketing’ is? By this, I am referring to the way you continue to ‘market’ yourself to current customers, clients and stakeholders. Your business could have award-winning advertisements, and promotions across every form of media showcasing your amazing product or service. However, all of this is pointless if the experience your customer has
does not meet their expectations or live up to the things you promise. Your employees significantly determine this perception and experience. If you have an employee who acts contrary to the mission, values, practices and policies of your business, it will be this interaction that shapes your customer’s opinions. Not only will they be unlikely to continue to do business with you, they are also likely to speak negatively of you to others. ‘Word of mouth’ marketing is the most powerful form of advertising: if my friend tells me a company is great, I am far more inclined to try it than if an advertisement tells me the same. Conversely, if my friend tells me about their bad experience, I am highly unlikely to become a customer, and my friend is also highly likely to tell many others about her bad experiences. Isolated negative issues do not have to define a customer’s experience of your business. However, it takes a great deal of time, energy and resources, to regain trust. It’s far better to invest in quality staff/training.
Asset Insurance These insurances exist to cover you in case any of your assets or property sustain damage during the course of business. This includes theft of property or cash, physical damage to stock or plant and equipment due to malfunction, even interruption of business events such as fire or flood that will cover fixed expenses if you cannot trade. Personal Insurance Unlike companies, if you fall ill or suffer an injury, then your small business also suffers. Personal insurance ensures that you can wind up the business without too great a loss and receive an income flow should the need arise. Income protection insurance is highly recommended. This ensures you still receive regular income if you become unable to earn an income from that specific occupation. Furthermore, income protection insurance is tax deductible. Liability Insurance Of the three categories of insurance, this category warrants serious consideration. Liability insurance protects you against potential damages sustained by other

people who interact with your business. The three forms are Public Liability, Professional Indemnity and Product Liability. Public Liability was discussed in an earlier article but in short, it covers damage sustained by a third party during the operation of your business. Product Liability covers customers and maybe other individuals who sustained damage during the use of a product provided by your business. The final form is Professional Indemnity. This form of insurance is for those businesses in which part of the service delivery requires the exercise of your professional judgement. So if an accountant gives accounting advice and the customer suffers damage because of that advice and the accountant was found to be negligent in giving that advice, then the insurance kicks in to cover the cost of the damage. It is strongly advised that all businesses review liability insurance, income protection insurance and a general form of asset insurance in order to ensure the smooth operation of your business.

Lose weight without the never-ending diet
H
ave you tried and tried to lose excess weight but can’t keep it off? There is a new way of losing weight that involves no surgery, and it’s available right now in Kingswood. Leonie O’Connell, one of Sydney’s leading Clinical Hypnotherapists, specialises in helping clients with weight issues, addictive behaviours, anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder. She said most people who diet end up gaining all the weight back. Diets fail because they fail to address the most important aspect – the mind. “Excess weight is a symptom of underlying issues such as bad eating habits, emotional eating patterns and other problematic issues based in the subconscious mind,” she said. “If you want lasting, long term change, you need to work with the power of the mind to create success.” Mrs O’Connell recommends the Virtual Gastric Band, a remarkable weight loss program developed in the UK that has helped thousands

of people around the world to gain control over their weight. The Virtual Gastric Band uses the power of hypnotherapy to retrain your body to be satisfied with much smaller amounts of food. Suddenly, the way you think and feel about food changes, you eradicate food cravings and bad eating habits. This process gives very safe, predictable results. “This is not a diet. It’s an effective long term solution. It allows you to eat what you want, but will enable you to feel full and satisfied with much smaller portions,” Mrs O’Connell said. “And because it’s not a diet, you won’t feel deprived, miserable or hungry – the issues which cause diets to fail.” Hypnotherapy is a natural and extremely effective process, that harnesses the power that every individual holds within them to make changes to their lives. The Virtual Gastric Band can be undertaken quickly, simply and privately, and has been clinically proven to provide powerful medical and therapeutic benefits.

ENTERTAINMENT PENRITH’S BIGGEST AND BEST LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
Damien’s decade of hits
T KATE REID
ime flies when you’re having fun and that’s certainly been true for Damien Leith. A decade on from his ‘Australian Idol’ win and the singer/songwriter has managed to produce a consistent string of successful creative projects. It’s a feat that few of his fellow talent show alumni have managed to replicate. Though he may not have done it with the same pop fanfare as artists like Guy Sebastian, the humble family man has been working hard over the last 10 years on albums, tours, novels and a stage play. But it’s his understanding of the ‘business’ part of show business which he credits for his success. “A lot of musicians and artists in general are so caught up in the art of it that you sometimes forget about the business side,” Damien said. “It’s really the business side where the longevity is.” Since August Damien has been touring in celebration of the milestone. Though the tour includes a mix of music from across his back catalogue, it’s also given him the chance to revisit some of those early hits. “I get to really go right back to the start,
even to songs that I did on ‘Australian Idol’,” Damien said. “That’s great for me because I haven’t played some of those songs for a long time and they really are great songs.” Of course when you see the name ‘Damien Leith’ it’s normally followed closely by ‘Australian Idol winner’. But for Damien, even 10 years after the win, he doesn’t mind the association one bit. “At the end of the day for me it is where I got my break and it’s been great, 10 years later I wouldn’t necessarily be doing what I’m doing if it wasn’t for Idol,” he said. “I would never turn up my nose about it or anything like that, it really helped me out an awful lot.” Continuing on from a busy year the singer/songwriter already has big plans for 2017, including more touring, another book and a new album, which he worked on with one of Roy Orbison’s co-writers Joe Melson. “He’s an amazing guy and what I’ve learned from working with him has just been phenomenal,” Damien said. “He hasn’t really written with anyone or worked with anyone since Roy passed away, so it’s a real honour from that point of view as well.” With confirmation that Australia’s been invited back for Eurovision in 2017, could we also be seeing the star representing our fair country on the world stage? “I was actually asked to represent Ireland for Eurovision a few years back,”
Celebrating the Festive Season
Damien laughed. “I was touring so I couldn’t do it at the time. “But look if it came up I wouldn’t necessarily say no, I think it’s a great event and a great show.”
Damien Leith will be performing at the Evan Theatre at Panthers on Friday, December 16 at 8pm. Tickets are $42.50. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.penrith.panthers.com.au or call 4720 5555.

British comedy live on stage KATE REID
T
here’s nothing quite like classic British comedy and it seems The Acting Factory agrees. The local theatre company – which last year produced a successful run of ‘Fawlty Towers’ at Mamre House – will be returning this December with their version of the BBC comedy sitcom ‘Steptoe and Son’. Airing in the 60s and 70s, the show centred around a father and son who peddled their junk trade around Shepherd’s Bush in West London. Father Albert has experienced a lot
of what life has to offer someone of his social standing and isn’t impressed, while his son Harold has his sights set on big things, with plans to escape the family home and his father. But things don’t quite turn out the way he had hoped mostly due to his father’s constant sabotage and put-downs. Along with plenty of laughs guests will also enjoy a delicious three course meal on the night. The Steptoe and Son Dinner will be on at the Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, December 2 at 7.30pm. Tickets are $80. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au or call 9677 4916.

DVD Finding Dory
Rated G // KATE REID 13 years ago audiences fell in love with a clown fish named Nemo. Now it’s time for Nemo’s lovable sidekick to take centre stage with the DVD and Blu-ray release of ‘Finding Dory’. The film centres around the adorable and very forgetful blue tang fish Dory, voiced by comedian and popular daytime talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. Dory starts recalling parts of her life and decides to set out on a journey to find her long lost family and answer that age old question: ‘How did I learn to speak whale?’ Joining Dory is all the ‘Finding Nemo’ favourites including
Nemo, Marlin, Mr Ray, Squirt and Crush. A long list of big names have lent their voice to the film including Diane Keaton, Eugene Levy, Ed O’Neill, Ty Burrell, Idris Elba and Bill Hader. Sequels are always a risk but ‘Finding Dory’ managed to produce a worthy follow-up to one of animation’s most loved films. The film has earned an overwhelming positive critical reception on movie review site Rotten Tomatoes, where the movie is described as “funny, poignant and thought-provoking”. Grab your copy on DVD or Bluray now!
CINEMA Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them Rated M // KATE REID
Dishonored 2
Rated MA • PS4, Xbox One & PC // KATE REID Take on the role of supernatural assassin in this much anticipated actionadventure release. Gamers can play as Emily Kaldwin or Corvo Attano – powerful assassins who each possess a set of unique weapons, supernatural abilities and unusual gadgets. ‘Dishonored 2’ takes place 15 years after the Lord Regent was vanquished and the Rat Plague has come to an end. When an otherworldly usurper manages to steal the throne from Empress Emily Kaldwin it’s up to either Emily or her bodyguard and father Corvo to save the day. They must travel to the coastal city of Karnaca to find the key to restoring her to power. The outcome of each mission is in your hands. Create your own playstyle from a combination of immersive first-person action, stealth, assassination, mobility and a brutal combat system.
If you’re a ‘Harry Potter’ fan then it’s likely this film has been on your must watch list since it was announced a few years ago. Set in the same universe ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them’ is a spin off/prequel to the mega popular
‘Harry Potter’ film franchise. It’s 1926 and Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) has just returned from an excursion documenting magical creatures from all over the world. Newt arrives in New York for a quick stopover but things quickly take an unexpected turn. When the magical beasts escape Newt has to call on the secret community of witches and wizards to stop them before they wreak havoc on the wizarding and No-Maj (American for Muggle) worlds.
The film is based on the 2001 book which was written by J.K. Rowling under the pseudonym Newt Scamander. The book was designed to mimick the text book of the same name that Harry Potter owned in the book series. With a star studded cast and a strong fan following this is sure to be another box office winner. ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them’ is currently showing at Hoyts Penrith. For more information on session times, visit www.hoyts.com.au.

Taylor TV NEWS
SHARK WEEK SUNDAY, DECEMBER 4 DISCOVERY CHANNEL Ê Channel Nine has finally unveiled its line-up for 2017 with Hamish and Andy, Seal and ‘Underbelly’ all returning to our screens next year. Returning after a two year hiatus, Hamish and Andy are coming back to television with a brand new series while Seal and Delta Goodrem are the first two coaches confirmed for ‘The Voice Australia’. ‘The AFL Footy Show’ presenter Rebecca Maddern will host new series ‘Australian Ninja Warrior’, while ‘The NRL Footy Show’ presenter Erin Molan will co-host ‘20-1’ alongside comedian Dave Thornton. Chopper Reid’s fascinating life will feature on the new ‘Underbelly’ series while other new titles include ‘This Time Next Year’ hosted by Karl Stefanovic, ‘The Last Resort’, ‘Travel Guides’, ‘Murder Calls’, ‘Accidental Heroes’ and ‘Family Food Fight’. Ê While Nine’s new shows have sure garnered a lot of interest this past week, attention now turns to what shows
haven’t been confirmed to return. While most of the following shows are likely to be done and dusted, some are still to be determined: ‘You’re Back in the Room’, ‘Australia’s Got Talent’, ‘The Farmer Wants a Wife’, ‘Hyde and Seek’, ‘The Verdict’, ‘Reno Rumble’, ‘The Embassy’, ‘Kings Cross ER’, ‘Inside Story’, ‘The NRL Rookie’ and ‘Unreal Estate’.
Ê ‘The Simpsons’ has been renewed for its 29th and 30th seasons, meaning it will pass ‘Gunsmoke’ as the longest running scripted US series of all time. Ê This news will come as no surprise to anyone but it appears Georgia Love from this year’s ‘The Bachelorette’ will be returning to our screens in December as a co-host on ‘Studio 10’. No word yet on how long the journalist will be on the hit morning show but she didn’t waste any time getting back in the game, that’s for sure.
Ê A prequel for ‘The Big Bang Theory’ is in the pipeline featuring a young Sheldon Cooper, the character portrayed by Jim Parsons. None of the ‘Big Bang’ cast are said to be involved in the potential prequel series outside of Parsons, who will executive produce.

Ê Season three of the gripping series ‘The Affair’ returns to Foxtel next week. Express from the US, the first episode of the new season airs on Tuesday, November 22 at 8.30pm on Showcase. The 2017 Penrith History Calendar is now on sale. Penrith Mayor, John Thain, said the calendar gives residents and visitors a piece of history that can be used at home. “The annual calendar showcases the incredible developments that Penrith and its people have gone through over time,” Cr Thain said. “It’s important to acknowledge and learn about the history that our great city has to offer.” The cover shows what is now known as the Victoria Bridge being built before Penrith experienced the greatest flood in recorded history 150 years ago in June 1867. The new road and rail bridge was opened the day of the flood after the first two bridges had been washed away in 1857 and 1860. And now, in 2017, a new bridge is emerging from the Nepean River. The 2017 calendar acknowledges the many local school anniversaries including Penrith Public School in High Street that opened 100 years ago on its new site. It also commemorates the sacrifice of our local men and women from the First World War, remembering the battles of 1917 and our fallen. All photos in the calendar are sourced from Penrith City Library’s photographic collection. For more information, visit Penrith City Library, Nepean Family History Society or www.penrithhistory.com.

your horoscopes
This week’s powerful Jupiter/Pluto square boosts your desire for attention and success in the outside world. Which suits your innate Aries drive and ambition. But, if you overdo it, then you’ll just end up alienating authority figures or loved ones (like your partner) in the process. On the weekend, your wonderfully witty side is set to blossom, as you brainstorm ideas and amaze others with your quick-witted quips and controversial comments.
TAURUS
Are you a stubborn Bull who is holding onto outdated ideas? Or are you obstinately sticking to old ways of working, as if you’re on auto-pilot? It’s time to put aside pre-conceived notions and examine your beliefs in a mature and philosophical new light. On the surface it may appear that you lack self-belief, but you have a quiet inner confidence that will eventually shine through.
GEMINI
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
Under the influence of the Jupiter/ Pluto square you could get carried away; promise the Moon; and then fail to follow through. Or blow your budget with a spontaneous spending spree. Or commit yourself to an ambitious project that you really don’t have the time for. Big talk is no good if it doesn’t translate into dynamic action. So this week’s special message is “People will prefer it if you under-promise and then over-deliver.”
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
Jupiter and Pluto place money matters or self-esteem issues under the microscope this week. But don’t waste too much time weighing up the pros and cons of a given situation. The planets Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus all encourage you to stop ruminating, pondering and postulating. Instead, start turning your thoughts and ideas into active, dynamic and productive projects.
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Ambitious Goats aspire to climbing the work or corporate ladder with nimble ease. But are you blaming circumstances [and other people] for the relatively slow progress you are making? Be careful that this week’s Jupiter/Pluto square doesn’t fan your control-freak tendencies. Examine your motives carefully Capricorn. And remember – the only person you can control is yourself!

The current buzz word is humility! Hubris, pride and over-confidence often come before a fall. Especially this week, when Jupiter squares Pluto. So you need to practice being super humble at the moment Cats, otherwise you’ll come a cropper. Mercury, Saturn and the Sun are all moving through your self-expression zone. So it’s also time to tap into the playful child within, as you translate inner inspiration into creative projects.

When it comes to a tricky relationship, are you desperately trying to fix a frustrating situation? Expect some resistance from others this week – especially a child, partner or friend. A quick-fix just won’t work. Instead, you need to slow down and take the time to really think things through. Expect a welcome boost on the weekend, when the Mercury/Uranus trine precipitates a light-bulb moment, when you solve a sticky problem.

Has your perfectionist streak got out of control? The more you try to make things ‘perfect’ the more you will attract opposition from others. You need to focus on the process rather than the outcome. It’s also a week when you may suffer from a crisis of confidence. Be inspired by Bruce Lee: “Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself. Do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it”.

This week avoid taking short cuts and take the time to do everything by the book. The current Jupiter/Pluto square could exacerbate a current legal situation – or lead to one in the future. So make sure you stay on the right side of the law. The weekend is wonderful for creative communication and flashes of inspiration, as you socialise in style or post up a storm on social media. A controversial comment you make could go viral!

JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
Here’s the uncomfortable truth … you can be a bossy Mother Hen! And the more you try to control those around you, the more they will push back. So it’s time to take a good long look at your motives. Perhaps you are on the wrong track? Perhaps you need to be less possessive? Perhaps you should give a loved one more freedom, so they can fight their own fights and make their own mistakes?
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
Be careful with all forms of communication this week, especially social media. Otherwise you could provoke a negative response from hidden enemies or known frenemies! The Jupiter/Pluto square can also make you more self-critical. By all means examine your inner motivations but don’t spend too much time navelgazing. “To know oneself is to study oneself in action with another person.”

Compassionate Pisces – if you jump in and try to help others this week (whether in person or online) then make sure they require your assistance before you begin. Otherwise you could end up playing the martyr in a rather messy situation. With Neptune (your power planet) now going direct, it’s time to stop being distracted by dead-end detours and instead, get yourself some firm direction.

Chemotherapy and exercise – how does it work? Cancer treatment can be difficult and draining, but exercise can make a big difference...
Alicia Whiticker Exercise Physiologist OnePoint Health 4732 5188 onepointhealth.com.au
For people undergoing treatment for cancer the idea of exercising directly after having chemotherapy is the last thing on their mind. Finding the motivation to exercise whilst battling all of the side effects of the chemotherapy including fatigue is difficult. The latest research has found that exercising directly before or after chemotherapy can help reduce the side effects associated with treatment as well as increase the effect the chemotherapy has on the tumour. Chemotherapy is used to weaken and destroy cancer cells in the body. However, tumours have poor blood supply and therefore a lot of the chemotherapy chemicals are not reaching the targeted area. During the process of treatment, chemotherapy also weakens our immune system which is our body’s natural ability to fight off diseases. So how does exercising directly before or after chemotherapy help? Exercise increases blood flow and therefore exercising directly before or after treatment can increase the potential
for more chemicals to reach the targeted tumour site. Our body is constantly producing potential cancer cells all of the time, however our immune system finds them and destroys them with our natural killer cells. Exercise releases adrenalin into the bloodstream, a chemical in our body that inhibits a natural killer cell used to fight any unwanted cells. The idea of exercise is to encourage our natural killer cells to target the tumour site and help with the breakdown of the tumour.
Exercise also helps release chemicals which seek out inflammation such as tumours and guide our natural killer cells to target the area. During chemotherapy our body has a 10-15 per cent decline in muscle mass and there is no medication to prevent this. The strongest benefit of exercise during chemotherapy is to improve fatigue levels and prevent further deconditioning such as muscle loss. Exercise also helps with confidence and releasing stress.

Getting your puppy ready for the new world around them
pets
The first few months of a dog’s life are crucial when it comes to how they behave around people and other animals in the future...
Nicole McMillan Practice owner of Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic and the Western Sydney Cat Hospital
We have been seeing lots of new puppies lately and we thought it would be appropriate to discuss socialisation for your new puppy. Socialisation is the process where puppies develop positive relationships with other living things. The most important time for socialisation is during the first three to four months of life. The experiences your puppy has during this time have a major effect on developing personality and how well they get along with people and other animals. It is important that we provide frequent, positive social experiences during these months to prevent antisocial behaviour, fear and aggression. Even after four months, continued exposure to a variety of people and other animals is important in maintaining good social skills. Puppies need to meet as many new people as possible in a wide variety of situations. This being said, it is important not to overwhelm them or have a negative experience. Start with calm introductions to one or two people at a
time. If your puppy handles this well then increase the number of people, noise level and activity level. It is a good idea to have new people to give your puppy a small treat as this will teach the puppy that new and strange people, with an outstretched hand are a positive thing. Once a puppy has learnt the sit command, have each new friend ask your puppy to sit before giving a treat. This also teaches a proper greeting and makes the puppy less likely to jump on people. It is important that a young pup has opportunities to learn about children; they often act and behave differently

to adults and dogs often see them as a different species. People running, riding bikes, roller skating and riding scooters seem very different to young puppies. So learning that these things are not scary is important. Take your puppy to visit friends’ homes to interact with their pets and family. Ideal friends to visit are those with calm pets and calm children. Sometimes people are told to keep their puppy home until all of the immunisations are complete. This is important to discuss with your veterinarian as risks do exist.

your swim safety
Campaign aims to prevent drowning and save lives Four layers of protection are the key messages of this year’s SwimSAFER week, which is being held from November 21 to 27...
Julie Fletcher Nepean Swim and Fitness julie@nepeanswim.com.au nepeanaquaticcentre.com.au and on Facebook
It’s not been a good start to the warmer weather. After this year’s Royal Lifesaving drowning report very encouragingly reported a decrease in the number of children aged 0-4 drowning between July 2015 and June 2016, we have in recent weeks seen the tragic loss of sisters in Queensland, and of another little boy in Victoria, to drowning in backyard pools. Each and every case is so upsetting, these are not statistics, they are children, and there is still much to be achieved in the area of swim safety in Australia. There are two things we can do. We can wring our hands and feel discouraged, or even worse, berate the poor grieving parents online to make a horrific time in their lives even worse. I cannot believe some of the comments and judgements I read from ‘keyboard warriors’, no doubt driven by fear and by the misguided belief that it could never happen to them. Alternatively, we can be compassionate and positive and hopeful, and realise that a lapse in judgement can happen to anyone, and that the best way we can
combat more drowning deaths is through consistent and effective public education. From now until Christmas there are a series of National Swim Safety initiatives, starting with Swim Australia’s Annual National SwimSAFER week from November 21 to 27. The theme of the campaign is PREVENT DROWNING and SAVE LIVES. The campaign aims to educate children, parents and caregivers about the four layers of protection – ALWAYS SUPERVISE, use EFFECTIVE BARRIERS (pool fencing, locked doors, etc), have children
in SWIMMING LESSONS, and the importance of having effective EMERGENCY PLANNING – all carers should know the importance of CPR in a worst case scenario. Nepean Aquatic Centre and Eva Bory’s Swim School will again be participating in this year’s annual SwimSAFER Week, with educational messages and materials about drowning prevention available at both centres. Be sure to get involved, and help us to work as a community towards a zero drowning rate.

Kendall Jenner, one of the most famous supermodels from one of the most famous families, had her 21st birthday recently. For a fancy celebration in LA what would the fashion icon choose to wear? Apparently an exact replica of a crystal encrusted mini number that socialite Paris Hilton debuted at her own 21st birthday in 2002, of course! Her flashback dress was recreated through her stylist Monica Rose contacting designer LaBourjoisie who made the insanely sparkly dress which now retails for $11700. Made completely from mesh and Swarovski crystals, the ultra glam ensemble took seven days to create. The designer speaking of his creation saying “the perfect party dress because it’s very lightweight and easy to move in”. The model accessorised her modern take on the 20s flapper-style mini dress with a diamond-encrusted choker and a box clutch bag, even carrying a fur stole into the venue over one arm. Your guide to being a master of the barbecue this summer We all love a steak during summer, but what cut is best and how do you cook it?
Kate Reid Nutritionist kate.reid@ westernweekender.com.au @kate_reid6
As we come into summer you can almost hear the sound of barbecues lighting up across the country. So this week I spoke to Hux Grill’s Jay Huxley to get the lowdown on how to choose and cook that perfect steak. Rump According to Jay, rump has a fantastic true beef flavour and the way to ensure it is as tender as possible is to break down the rump into the five muscles, then cut those at 90 degrees to the grain. Best eaten medium. T-bone While this is a popular cut, Jay advises that it can be hard to cook because it contains two different cuts (porterhouse and a small side eye fillet), which require different cooking times. Look for cuts that are 400 grams and over, start it on the grill and finish in a 110 degree Celsius oven. Best eaten medium rare. Porterhouse This is the cut that is on the big side of the T-bone. According to Jay, this is a nice cut that has a fatty edge but relatively lean meat. Ideal around 300 grams. Best eaten medium rare. Scotch Fillet
Scotch fillet offers a combination of flavour and tenderness made up of the centre eye and the delicious cap that runs over the top. It is best cut around 300-350 grams and with the bone still attached it is known as ribeye. Best eaten medium. Eye Fillet This is the most expensive and tender cut but Jay advises that it has little to no fat and can be lacking in flavour. For that reason he suggests using it in a raw beef dish like steak tartare, or pairing with a strong flavoured sauce. Best eaten rare. Cooking instructions for the perfect steak: 1. Bring the meat to room temperature
2. Season the meat with salt and pepper prior to cooking 3. Put a small amount of oil on the steak, not on the grill or pan 4. Pre-heat the grill or pan 5. Buy yourself a meat thermometer! Use this to check the ‘doneness’ of your steak by sticking it into the thickest part of the meat. Rare: 45 degrees Celsius Medium rare: 55 degrees Celsius Medium: 58 degrees Celsius Medium well: 62 degrees Celsius Well done: 70 degrees Celsius 6. Lastly rest your steak for half the time you have cooked it.

here was a time when true gentlemen of this world always had a good tawny port on hand to offer guests at the completion of a fine dinner, or to bid them good night or farewell as they made their way to bed or to home. And now Lindeman have released a wonderful new tawny to recall that era, offering with it a light-hearted set of rules reflecting yesteryear chivalry, and complete with guidelines to savouring this almost by-gone wine style. For, as Chief Winemaker Wayne Falkenberg says, “along with slippers and dressing gowns, fortified wines have become somewhat of a quaint tradition of yesteryear, a terrible shame for the generations who have missed out on this rich, luscious wine style”. Part of Lindeman’s Gentleman’s Collection, this is an almost-must for those of us who can remember those days of yore, and a great idea as a Christmas gift for dads, grandads, older-era uncles (and aunts!) who can fondly remember “another time”. A blend of four grape varieties from half a dozen vintages, and fortified with a secret select spirit, this Lindeman’s Gentleman’s Collection Tawny has lovely concentrated sweet fruit flavours, hints of spicy raisins, sweet maple syrup and a nutty finish. At just $22, it’s ideal for under the Christmas tree this year for special someones from another era.

A relationship with God means we’ll never be truly lonely Nobody likes to feel lonely and isolated, and Reverend John Lavender believes the key is developing important relationships to cherish...
Rev John Lavender www.glenmorepark anglican.com.au and on Facebook
Isn’t it ironic that as our cities grow larger, as more people live around us and as many people are “connected” though social media, that people are feeling increasingly lonely, isolated and cut off? A recent national survey by Lifeline revealed 60 per cent of Australians often feel lonely, and more than 82 per cent believe loneliness is increasing. Loneliness is one of the most universal sources of human suffering... an almost permanent condition for millions of people regardless of class, race, age or sex. Loneliness can mean feelings of emptiness, rejection, frustration, even depression. The reality is that loneliness is painful. The Bible says that, “It is not good for man to be alone”. We were not created to live in isolation. As the great English poet, John Dunne wrote, way back in the 1600’s, “No man is an island... every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea... it diminishes
me, because I am involved in mankind”. We were created for relationship, especially, we were created for relationship with our Lord God, and for relationships with one another. It is vital to make these relationships a priority in our life. When we don’t, no wonder we feel lonely. Jesus, God’s own Son, promises, “And surely I am with you always, to the very

end of the age”. Millions of Christians throughout the centuries have found Jesus’ promise to be of great encouragement. And what a promise it is! When we put our trust in Jesus we can be sure that Jesus is always with us no matter what the circumstances, even if everyone else deserts us. This is a promise for any age, young or old!

Wanderers belted by Victory p.67 NATHAN TAYLOR
fter a roller coaster couple of years up north, new Penrith Panthers recruit James Tamou says his young family is happy and settled in their brand new surrounds. Following eight seasons with North Queensland, the 27-year-old Origin forward signed a four year deal with Penrith in June, which Tamou admits was the toughest decision of his career. Speaking on his second day of pre-season training, the Cowboys premiershipwinner opened up about the challenges of living away from family and why he decided Penrith was the next destination for his decorated career. “I have three kids and up there I was a bit far away from family, and that was the main reason I came down,” Tamou said. “But I wasn’t going to sign with any team. What Penrith did this year was nothing short of impressive and I was watching them closely in the 12 weeks after I signed. “In saying that, it was really tough to leave the Cowboys… I never wanted to leave Townsville – it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do.” Tamou made the call to leave his Cowboys teammates after he noticed his wife, Brittney, was particularly struggling with being away from her family in Braidwood, near Canberra. The couple has three kids together, including a newborn, and things began to reach breaking point. “Brittney would have her good days where everything would be alright but then she would have her bad days where she wanted to go home,” Tamou said. “It got to the point where we were getting unhappy and it was getting unhealthy.” Fortunately for Tamou and his family, Panthers boss Phil Gould and coach Anthony Griffin came to the rescue – offering the former Test star a lucrative deal reportedly worth $3 million. “I met with Gus and Hook and I was impressed with everything,” Tamou said. “Brittney and I are a lot happier now and we have a lot more hands to help out. “Everything is close, including family.”

Victory hand Wanderers a spanking Western Sydney look to bounce back as superstar Tim Cahill visits Wanderland for the first time NATHAN TAYLOR
he Western Sydney Wanderers will look to regroup from a 3-0 thrashing when they return to Spotless Stadium tonight to battle Tim Cahill’s Melbourne City. It will be the second straight week the Wanderers will take on a side from Melbourne after they were demoralised by Victory last Saturday. The Wanderers were made to pay for missed chances and controversial decisions, as they lost their first match since the A-League’s opening round. Western Sydney started the match at Etihad Stadium on the front foot with Jumpei, Dimas and Aritz Borda having the first three chances. Victory’s first opportunity saw them take the lead as Andrew Redmayne made a wonderful save from Fahid Ben Khalfallah’s shot but, when Besart Berisha collected the rebound, he was able to tee-up Oliver Bozanic for a tap-in. It was a cruel and undeserved goal to concede after such a bright start but the Wanderers continued to attack with Jumpei setting-up Mitch Nichols, but the midfielder’s shot was deflected wide.
T

The second half was a more even affair with Victory beginning to create chances too, but the match soon turned controversial as the referee waved away what commentators described as a certain penalty. Jumpei had the ball in the box and looked to be cut down by Victory’s Jason Geria only for the referee to award a goal kick. “We had a clear penalty… there will not be a clearer one this year in the A-League,” Wanderers coach, Tony Popovic expressed. “If that’s not a penalty, then the referee should’ve booked him for diving.” The game was then made even more difficult for the visitors after Jai Ingham made it 2-0 for Melbourne, with more controversy surrounding whether the ball came off Ingham’s head or his hand. Kerem Bulut, Jumpei and Bruno Piñatares all had chances but were unable to capitalise before Victory scored again to take an incredible 3-0 lead. A huge crowd is expected at Sydney Olympic Park tonight, with Socceroo superstar Tim Cahill making his first appearance at ‘Wanderland’ this season. The Wanderers could be without striker Brendon Santalab due to a calf injury.

Aussie Rules Best of the best honoured at Rams’ presentation evening NATHAN TAYLOR
he Penrith Rams celebrated the 2016 season in style last weekend with their annual Presentation Night. Held at Penrith RSL, players, coaches and officials were all in attendance at Saturday night’s gala event including Penrith MP and Rams Life Member Stuart Ayres. Adam Fisher and Tony Pianta were acknowledged for their tireless work by being named joint winners of the Club Person of the Year award. Whilst both coached the Penrith Giants U17’s this past season, the pair were often on hand assisting the senior club with various duties including umpiring, general maintenance and even running the barbecue. Brayden Wilson took out the big player award of the night, winning the Walker Medal in a tight contest. Wilson, who had a sensational season with the Rams first grade squad, overcame teammate Phil Aumann by just one point to claim the coveted medal. Other winners on the night included rookie Ryan Arber, who won the Third Grade Medal while the Geoff Eldering Medal for best reserve grade player of the
T
year went to Liam Murphy. The Corless Medal for best female player of the year went, once again, to Natalie Camilleri, who outlasted her Ramettes counterpart Nikki Perrett by one point. Fellow Ramette and recent Giants draftee Renee Tomkins was presented the Outstanding Achievement award for her recent selection in the 2017 National Women’s League competition. Tomkins is the first member of the club to be drafted into a professional AFL competition. One of the major highlights of the evening was the Life Membership presentation to club all-rounder Christian Triffitt. Triffitt, who is also the club’s official photographer among other roles, received a standing ovation and lengthy applause for his tireless efforts over the years. Penrith Rams Chairman, Greg Corless, said the 12-year veteran has almost accomplished it all at the club. “Christian, a former St Clair Crows junior, has been through the lows and the highs at the Rams but he regards his 2012 premiership flag as one of his highlights,” Corless said. “The club is extremely proud to have Christian as the 24th Life Member of the club.” The Rams returned to training this week.

Heddle’s shock at prestigious honour Under 20’s coach Jaqua Heddle takes home top award – but didn’t even know she was nominated! NATHAN TAYLOR
anthers Premier League Netball Under 20’s coach Jaqua Heddle didn’t even know she was nominated until her name was called out as Netball NSW Coach of the Year. “I was like ‘is that my name’?” she admitted to the Weekender. Heddle won the prestigious Margaret Corbett OAM Coaches Award at the annual Netball NSW State Dinner earlier this month. The Penrith District Netball Association member said she was shocked at the recognition because she wasn’t aware of her nomination. “I was the Netball NSW U19’s assistant coach this year, so I thought I was at the State Dinner for that,” Heddle said. “It was a great surprise to be acknowledged by Netball NSW, and it’s really rewarding considering the year we had at Panthers and what we achieved. “It certainly topped off the year nicely for me.” Heddle’s Panthers Under 20’s team made history in August when they were crowned premiers of the inaugural Netball NSW Premier League competition.

Heddle said 2016 has definitely been her most successful season to date. “It’s been a really rewarding year but I don’t think a coach can succeed without a good support network,” she said. “I’m really fortunate we have a great brand in Panthers behind us – they’ve supported me tremendously this year as have my family. “It’s also evident I had a great bunch of players who were committed to the task because at the end they came out with a premiership, and those things don’t come without sacrifice.” Not only did Heddle coach the Panthers Under 20’s team this year but she also was assistant coach with the Netball NSW U19’s side, and was a mentor on the South West Sydney Academy of Sport’s Netball Program. After many years in the coach’s corner, Heddle said it was a thrill to finally be rewarded for her coaching efforts. “That was my first coaching award ever… and it was a big one too,” she said. “As a coach we don’t seek individual accolades but it’s certainly nice when they come.” Meanwhile, Penrith Netball’s Tricia Mann also won the Lynn Quinn OAM Bench Officials Award.

CRICKET: Penrith have lost their second straight game, defeated by Randwick Petersham in Round 5 of the NSW Premier Cricket competition. Playing in a two day match at Petersham Oval, Penrith racked up 251 runs on Day 1. Max McNamara top scored for Penrith with 65 runs. When Randwick Petersham hit the crease, they were able to reach Penrith’s target with relative ease – only losing seven wickets in the process. Ryan Smith was best with the ball for Penrith, taking 3/88. Penrith will hope to return to some form when they take on Northern District at Howell Oval this Saturday. BASEBALL: The Penrith Panthers first grade side lost their only game to the Central Coast Marlins during Round 9 of the NSW State Baseball League. In the mid-week game last Wednesday night, Penrith’s clash with Central Coast was washed out, while last Sunday afternoon the Marlins hammered Penrith 18-8. Penrith will take on Blacktown in Round 10.

who appeared to be a sure thing for post-season action before a disappointing final two weeks. Meanwhile, Nepean’s Colts team are off to the playoffs for the first time, following a 14-13 win over Sydney University. The Ducks will take on the Sydney Uni Cubs this Saturday at Lidcombe Oval. FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers have lost their second straight W-League clash, going down to Sydney FC 2-0 last Sunday afternoon at Allianz Stadium. The new-look Wanderers had a few opportunities to capitalise but weren’t able to get through Sydney FC’s defence. The Wanderers will look for their first win of the year when they battle Adelaide United this Sunday at Marconi Stadium. FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers almost pulled of one of the best comebacks in the history of the National Youth League competition last Sunday against the Newcastle Jets. Down 3-0 at half-time, the Wanderers brought it back to 3-3 but fell behind after having a man sent off to lose 4-3. Mario Shabow scored twice for the Wanderers while Abraham Majok scored the temporary equaliser on his Wanderers debut. The Wanderers will take on the Central Coast Mariners this Sunday.

Can he be king of the kids? NATHAN TAYLOR
he kids-only version of Ironman – Ironkids – is headed back to Penrith next weekend with hundreds of children taking part. One dedicated Ironkid, who is making his return to the Sydney International Regatta Centre course, is nine-year-old Brody Hull. The Cranebrook resident will compete in his second Ironkids event when competition gets underway in Penrith next Saturday. Brody will compete in the 7-10 years age category where he’ll battle it out against other kids in a 100m swim before cycling for 1km and finishing off with a 500m run. Speaking with the Weekender, the Year 4 Samuel Terry Primary School student said he couldn’t wait to hit the local track again. “It’s just a fun event to be a part of. I enjoy riding and running the best while I’m not a fan of swimming as much,” Brody said. “I’m looking forward to doing it again and improving on last year.” A sporting all-rounder, young Brody first competed in triathlons a number of years ago. Since then, he’s joined the Panthers Tri Club and even has his own personal trainer.
