olice are warning patrons could face hefty fines if they don’t leave a club or pub when asked to do so this festive season.

Police are prepared to come down hard on unruly partygoers to ensure the safety of others and avoid a Christmas tragedy.

At a Liquor Accord meeting held earlier this week, Executive Manager of Club Operations at Penrith RSL, Brian Bellomo, spoke about the problems when asking people to leave a premises.

“If patrons become quarrelsome, if they’re intoxicated, violent or disorderly, if they’re smoking in a smoke free area or even using or possessing drugs, they will be asked to leave the premises and they must do so at that time,” said Mr Bellomo, who is also the Chair of Penrith/St Marys Liquor Accord.

“Not leaving the premises will have police issuing $550 fines on the spot. People can enjoy themselves and of course they will and generally speaking people do drink responsibly, but nine times out of 10, people are asked to leave due to intoxication.”

Detective Inspector at Penrith Police Station, Grant Healey, said police won’t hesitate to hand out fines over the busy holiday season.

“It can be a big problem when people don’t know when it’s time to leave,” he said.

At the meeting, Penrith Council presented the option to licensed premises in the area to install a breathalyser machine for people who would be driving home, enabling them to get an assessment of how much alcohol they have consumed.

housands of people across our local community gathered on Wednesday to remember our fallen heroes for the 97th time.

Every year since 1919, Australia has come together to sound the Last Post at

11am, on the 11th day of the 11th month, for Remembrance Day. It was this moment in 1918, when the Germans asked to settle for peace and the guns on the Western Front fell silent after four years of warfare.

Remembrance Day ceremonies were held in several locations across the region, including Memory Park in Penrith.

A minute of silence honoured the 102,804 Australians who lost their lives in the last 100 years of warfare, and the countless families affected by their deaths. Not only did the community remember our fallen, but the 70 million people across the world who were displaced by warfare and the 11 million that lost their lives.

After three months and 28,000 competition entries, one lucky woman is now the proud owner of a brand new 2015 Toyota Kluger.

On Tuesday, Veronica Brown received possibly the best phone call of her life, informing her that the $46,000 4WD from Penrith Toyota was all hers.

57-year-old Ms Brown was in shock when she found out she’d won the competition, run by the Penrith Homemaker Centre.

“I hardly slept the first night, I’m so happy,” she said.

“I can’t believe it, I put one entry in.”

The win couldn’t come at a better time for Ms Brown, who has had a rough few weeks recovering mentally and financially from a devastating break-in.

Kevin James, Penrith Homemaker Centre’s Property Manager, is delighted the new car is going to someone who really needs it.

“We like it when deserving people win things,” he said.

“I’m so happy, she is obviously one of our loyal customers and she can bring her new car here and park it wherever she wants.”

’ve been called a lot of things (‘triple chinned turnip’ is my most recent favourite), but until around 4pm this afternoon, I’ve never been called a husband.

Yes, that’s right, I’m sorry to disappoint the ladies of Penrith, but I’m officially off the market later today.

Spare me the Friday the 13th jokes – I’ve heard them all, I assure you.

‘About time’ has been a common response to the news that my partner Stacey and I are tying the knot. We’ve been together for more than seven years, so I guess they have a point.

Thinking about it this week, it’s quite incredible the links that the Western Weekender has to our big day today.

You obviously know my connection, but it’s thanks to the newspaper that Stacey and I met in the first place.

I was working at the Weekender as a journalist when Stacey landed her first writing role here, working part-time while completing her university degree.

In 2008, I left the paper for a brief stint to host the drive program on Kick 87.6FM (live and local – who remembers?) and I saw this as the perfect opportunity to bypass the workplace romance taboo and make my move (well, I wouldn’t quite call it a move – but you get the picture).

So yes, you could say that the Weekender is very much responsible for the events that take place later today.

But the Weekender connections don’t quite end there.

My best man today, Michael Todd, is a business columnist here at the paper and again, we met through the Weekender and Kick 87.6 – bonding over a mutual love for the Penrith Panthers.

Last week Stacey asked me if she should buy five or six bags of confetti – I didn’t even know confetti was involved.

My suggestion of buying our flowers from Coles or Woolworths to save a bit of cash and score some extra FlyBuys points was simply met with a blank stare.

My one big job – the seating plan – is looming to be a triumphant success. That mate we have who is always drunk will simply love sitting next to Grandma.

I’ve also planned a couple of surprises, and I’m sure everyone will appreciate the Panthers highlights package I’ve assembled for people to enjoy.

Advice? There’s been a bit.

‘Happy wife, happy life’ seems to be most common.

Only one or two people have suggested I run for the hills.

By accident I also got some advice from Dr Phil, via an episode titled ‘Have you planned a marriage – or just a wedding?’

“Develop an emotional prenuptial agreement with your partner, outlining how you’ll handle children, discipline, sex, money, division of labour, religion, careers, retirement, in-laws, geography, etc,” Dr Phil says.

Romantic man that Dr Phil.

Advice and planning aside, today I get to marry my best friend, my partner in crime and the person I laugh most with in the world.

What happens next is anybody’s guess, but that’s what’s so fun about it. Now, I guess I should figure out what to wear...

One of my groomsmen, Matthew, was once the sales manager here at the Weekender before taking opportunities elsewhere, adding another link to the chain.

I’m beginning to think I spend way too much time at work.

Of course, mission number one is getting to the wedding in one piece today.

It seems simple enough but my family doesn’t quite have the best record at this task – my mum was hit by a car and broke her leg the night before her planned wedding to my dad in the early 1980s.

Mission number two is to enjoy the night – I’ve been told by countless people it’ll be all be a blur and that it’s important to stop and take a few deep breaths.

And mission number three is to brush up on my swimming skills given we’re expecting quite the downpour.

1. Promote waste avoidance, source separation and recycling.

2. Incorporate waste storage and collection areas that are accessible, safe and convenient for both occupants and service providers.

3. Promote measures which ensure all waste streams are stored and handled appropriately to minimise adverse environmental, health and amenity impacts.

4. Provide well designed and appropriate bulky waste storage areas within the development to reduce illegal dumping.

Bigger developments are coming Councillor Mark Davies supported the changes, but said it needs to be clear for developers.

“It’s important we are on the front foot here with these development applications coming in,” he said.

“What different requirements are needed for different densities? What developers want is certainty on what they have to do.”

5. Ensure new developments can be serviced efficiently and effectively by Council’s standard waste service.

Councillor Greg Davies said it’s not about telling developers what to do, but to give them guidelines.

These changes to the DCP will be placed on public exhibition for comment and feedback.

aste management can no longer be an afterthought, and will now have to be considered in the very first steps of design for multiunit developments.

Changes were made to waste management in Penrith City Council’s Development Control Plan 2014 (DCP) for multi-unit developments at a meeting on Monday night.

The new guidelines that put waste management at the forefront of design are long overdue, according to Council’s Waste and Community Protection Manager, Tracy Chalk.

“In 55 years we haven’t changed the way we look at garbage collection and waste planning,” she said.

Ms Chalk reported that waste is managed well during construction and demolition of medium and high density developments but not during the operational stages.

“We don’t have these [developments] in Penrith yet, but now we are getting applications for 290 unit, 12 storey buildings,” she said.

“We can go to 1100 litre bins from 240 litres... but unless it’s in the DCP, developers don’t have to provide that.”

Penrith: Woman loses 12 points after vehicle stop

St Marys: Armed robbery at service station

A woman was charged with several offences after she was stopped by police on High Street in Penrith last week.

At about 10.15am on Wednesday, November 4, a 25-year-old female was stopped in her Toyota Corolla on High Street after police checks revealed her vehicle’s registration had expired on October 13.

The woman claimed she was driving to a job interview.

Police also noted the female had four children under the age of five in the vehicle, all not restrained as prescribed, in the rear passenger seat.

A baby was restrained in a baby restraint which was not secured to the vehicle.

She was charged with a range of offences and lost a total of 12 demerit points.

Police are appealing for information after an armed robbery in St Marys.

At about 5am on Saturday, November 7, a 23-year-old man was working at a service station on Forrester Road in St Marys.

A man, allegedly armed with a knife, entered the station and allegedly threatened the employee, demanding money.

The man managed to leave the store, taking cash, and was last seen running towards Christie Street.

Described as being of Caucasian appearance, the man is said to be 30 to 40-yearsold, and approximately 175 centimetres tall.

He was seen wearing a black beanie, and a dark grey Wallabies jacket.

Anyone with information in relation to the incident should call 9677 7499.

Penrith: Woman to front court on drink driving charges

Kingswood: Man charged after police find drugs

A woman has had her license suspended after she was allegedly drink driving.

At about 5.45pm on Saturday, November 7, police were called to Nioka Road in Penrith for a separate job. After leaving, police came across a white Holden Commodore.

Police pulled over the vehicle and after speaking with the 29-year-old female driver, had cause to give her a Roadside Breath Test. The woman allegedly gave a positive reading. She was taken back to Penrith Police Station where she was given a breath analysis, that came back positive.

She had her license suspended and is due to appear in court on November 23.

A man was charged after police seized 86 grams of the drug ‘ice’ following a search in Kingswood late last week.

At about 7.10pm on Thursday, November 5, officers were patrolling Bringelly Road in Kingswood and stopped a man who was walking along the road.

Police searched the man and allegedly located over 86 grams of the drug, which has an estimated street value of $42,000.

1.6 grams of heroin and a sum of cash was also allegedly found on the man.

The 37-year-old was arrested and taken to St Marys Police Station and was charged with a range of offences.

ancer Council NSW will hit the bullseye later this month with its annual Darts Challenge fundraiser.

The fundraiser was created to help continue the conversation about men’s health, with Penrith residents invited to join in.

Community Programs Coordinator for Penrith Cancer Council, Rodney Titovs, said the Darts Challenge helps to encourage men to have ‘the talk’.

“We know men are 84 per cent more likely than women to die of preventable cancers,” he said.

“The Darts Challenge is a great platform to encourage Australian men to have a casual chat about their health while enjoying a game of competitive darts and raising funds for a good cause.”

So far, the Darts Challenge has raised over $17,000 for Cancer Council NSW research, support and prevention programs for men’s cancer since it began in 2013, with the hope of getting to a total of $20,000 this year.

Mr Titovs said there’s some great incentives to get involved.

“We’ve got great support from local

businesses this year with several opting in for the Corporate Challenge or donating major prizes for the raffle,” Mr Titovs said.

“It’s shaping up to be the best event yet.”

Business participants are encouraged to challenge one of their local competitors to a corporate game of darts, with the winner taking bragging rights and the loser to generously donate $500 to Cancer Council NSW. The Western Weekender is taking part in the challenge, going up against the Nepean News.

Mr Titovs said it’s important the focus of the event isn’t lost.

“It is our hope that each year we can encourage even more Aussie blokes to speak up about their health,” he said.

The darts event will be held on Friday, November 20 at the Gaels Club in Kingswood.

It will run from 2pm to 6.30pm.

ystery still surrounds who the Lindsay Labor candidate will be for next year’s Federal Election, but the picture will be made clearer within days with nominations closing today (Friday, November 13).

The Weekender can reveal that at least three people have nominated.

Nominations for Lindsay opened at 2am last Friday, November 6 and close at 2pm this afternoon.

Veteran Labor Councillor John Thain said interest was high but he wouldn’t reveal who had nominated.

“There have been a number of people who have expressed interest so far, but I find it unfair to say who because in the end they might not do it,” he said.

“I expect there will be a ballot, but you never know, people may pull out for different reasons.

Cr Thain said Labor Party members were waiting until the boundaries for the electorate were set in stone, before putting themselves forward.

“It just took a little bit of time until the boundaries were finalised and the party called nominations at the first opportunity,” he said.

“Now the seat of Lindsay is basically exactly as it was at the last election, people have clarity in what they are running for.”

The election is most likely to be held in September or October next year.

The Liberal Party’s Fiona Scott holds Lindsay by a narrow margin but Malcolm Turnbull’s recent polling results suggest Labor will be in for a tough task to block Ms Scott achieving a second term.

Cr Thain believes only a ‘double dissolution’ would see an election take place earlier than planned.

“If you have that, then you have the opportunity for the minor parties to have a better chance at getting elected because quotas are lower,” he said.

Cr Thain confirmed that he has not nominated for preselection.

Roger recognised for work in siege aftermath DALE DRINKWATER

he dramatic siege in Sydney’s Martin Place in December last year had a traumatic impact on the hostages, families, police and paramedics involved.

The 16 hour standoff also had a ripple effect on surrounding businesses that lost customers, income and livelihood for the duration of the siege and the days that followed.

In late October, Roger Blane, a Business Advisor at Penrith’s Western Sydney Business Centre (WSBC) was recognised for his work supporting these businesses.

Mr Blane said assisting these businesses to get back on their feet was his most rewarding experience since joining the WSBC in 2012.

“A number of the business owners we met had suffered significant losses, including a very busy restaurant about 50 metres away that was closed down midmorning on the day,” he said.

“The restaurant staff were ordered to leave the premises immediately, leaving all their prepared food for a fully booked restaurant.

“The owners of that restaurant advised they lost over $70,000 in food spoilage and

lost earnings over the next two-and-a-half days of being closed for trade.”

Mr Blane was awarded the NSW Small Business Commissioner’s Special Category Award 2014-15 for his volunteer role advising businesses within five blocks of the Lindt Café.

“I was on a team of well over 50 Small Biz Connect Business Advisors who called on hundreds of business owners located in the buildings surrounding Martin Place,” he said.

“We gave them reassurance that the NSW Government would be doing everything possible to assist them through this difficult time, registered names for possible financial support and compensation and offered financial guidance.”

Mr Blaine said struggling businesses were grateful for assistance that they didn’t expect.

“Businesses appreciated us taking the time to listen to their story and were surprised the NSW Government cared enough to send out Business Advisors to help small business owners,” he said.

“As a Business Advisor under the SmallBiz Connect business programme we help with business plans, marketing, profit and cash flow improvement, business health checks, all forms of social media and a host of other assistance.”

Community ignorant on public buses Disabled locals concerned about attitude shown by fellow commuters on public transport DALE DRINKWATER

or the disabled and vision impaired, catching public transport is challenging enough.

What makes it harder is a lack of accessibility buses, a three hour wait between them and an ignorant community attitude that is causing growing frustrations.

A discussion was held by the Penrith Disabilities Resource Centre (PDRC) with Busways and the State Government last week to seek answers to these ongoing issues.

Craig Millard, Transport for NSW’s Bus Contract Manager, said the main frustration raised at the meeting was the community’s attitude and how to change it.

“We are dealing with matters outside our control, whether they are ignorant people or people not appreciative of the attention that we need to give those with a disability,” he said.

“We can put everything in, spend a lot of money and keep buying new buses, but if people keep sitting in disabled areas and parking at bus stops then it becomes difficult.”

adding more accessible buses to the 4900 buses that service Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong.

“In Sydney, about 87 per cent of buses are wheelchair accessible, so it’s on the right track,” he said.

“By 2022, every bus in Sydney needs to be wheelchair accessible, and by 2017, 80 per cent of bus timetables will be a disability bus.

“They’re progressing to that, but you need a lot of funding to make it happen tomorrow.”

There are a lot of opportunities for the future, including installing visual information and sound announcements on buses.

“It’s technically a little bit harder to do that. With a train it’s simple, but with a bus moving around you’re relying on a GPS knowing where the bus is,” he said.

Denise Roberts, coordinator at the PDRC said the meeting was not to cause conflict, but to address issues and give information on people’s queries.

“People were here to seek solutions not crucify,” she said.

Ms Roberts said these concerns were not being swept under the carpet, and were quite confidently addressed at the meeting.

Rough waves ahead for stadium Soaring electricity costs partly to blame for Whitewater Stadium’s poor financial results DALE DRINKWATER

t a time when tourism is more crucial to Penrith than ever, one of our biggest attractions is showing signs of struggle.

Penrith Whitewater Stadium’s annual report ending June 2015 was presented to Penrith Council on Monday night, with some alarming figures.

Revenue for the stadium has dropped 18 per cent since 2014 from $1.6 million to $1.3 million, impacted by reduced patronage, electricity usage, and a big spend on marketing.

Jack Hodge, Penrith Whitewater Stadium Manager, said overall participation in activities at the stadium decreased, but it was the 11 per cent drop in rafting that hit the hardest.

“Rafting is what earns us most of our money, so it makes a big difference to our profitability,” he said.

The stadium also saw a huge drop in canoe/kayak activities of 58 per cent, but an increase in the number of rescue courses by five per cent.

Mr Hodge said over the cooler months, the stadium shuts off power to save money, but that too comes at a cost.

“We lose business because of that, but we save $30,000 a month,” he said.

“The cost of electricity is an issue, and this year being an Olympic year we expect electricity will cost us more as more people come out to train.”

The stadium invested 165 per cent more in marketing than the year before, with little effect.

“We spent a lot more money last year on marketing, but unfortunately it didn’t do as much as we would have liked,” Mr Hodge said.

Deputy Mayor and Penrith Whitewater Stadium Chairman, Ross Fowler, said despite the poor economic conditions, the patronage remains healthy.

“Unfortunately the financial results aren’t as good as what we expected them to be, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t getting results for Penrith,” he said.

“The stadium has put Penrith on the map internationally, bringing money into our community when people train.”

Councillor Kevin Crameri called on the State Government to help.

“It’s more than a regional asset, it’s a State asset, and we should be pushing it with our state members,” he said.

Currently, Penrith Whitewater Stadium receives no direct subsidy from Council.

The release of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and Airport Plan last month by the Federal Government has raised almost as many questions as it’s answered and we maintain our position that 60 days is not enough time to assess the impact the airport will have and respond.

A second Sydney airport has been on the drawing board for over 60 years – 60 days to decide what it means for our community is an insult.

The reality of the proposed flight paths is that Penrith and the lower Mountains will be subjected to 100 per cent of the aircraft movements into and out of the new airport.

The EIS has also confirmed the airport will operate 24 hours a day and it seems the flight paths have been concentrated over one area to protect airspace around Kingsford Smith. The future viability of Kingsford Smith and the amenity of the residents surrounding it, seems to be largely dictating the level of impact on the Penrith community.

It’s also difficult in the time that has been made available to comprehend what the proposed noise levels will actually mean. Using the Government’s

modelling tool, around 120 planes will fly in over Jamisontown in a 24 hour period at between 4500 and 5000 feet and we’re told this means more than 20 events exceeding 70 decibels per day – 70dba equates to the noise you experience on the kerb of a busy city street. In Erskine Park there will be 50 flights daily at under 2500 feet.

But even more concerning, by 2050 the number of planes along just one of the proposed corridors over Penrith will increase to 300 flights per day.

With 100 per cent of flights coming in over our city, it means Penrith and the lower Mountains will bear the burden of this airport for western Sydney. Is this fair?

Council is funding an in-depth, independent review of the EIS with other affected Councils which will give us a much greater understanding of the impacts and inform Council’s submission. Submissions must be lodged by December 18 and we’re pushing for more time to make sure Council, and the community, has plenty of time to wade through the four enormous volumes of information.

our winners have been crowned from 22 schools across the region, in the Penrith Valley Public Speaking Competition.

On Monday, 24 students battled it out at Glenmore Park Public School across four public speaking categories from Year 3 to Year 6.

Competition Coordinator and relieving Assistant Principal from Werrington County Public School, Kris Beeby, said students covered a range of interesting topics from keeping secrets to the youngest child syndrome.

“The day went really well, full of very clever and confident children,” she said.

“One had interesting facts about Japan, like their toilet seat warmers, and another spoke about how she had a rotten day at school and her parents wanted to have a chat with her. It gives an insight into their world, it makes you as an adult step back and see things from their perspective.”

Boys and girls had to take what they learnt in the classroom competitions earlier in the year, and speak for two to three minutes with a focus on their ‘manner, matter and method’.

“They have a criteria based on a few different categories such as their manner, audience engagement, content, voice and volume.”

Mia Connell from Regentville Public School won the Year 3 category, Matthew Smith from Glenmore Park Public School took out the top spot in Year 4, and the Year 6 winner was Alice Chitos from Orchard Hills Public School.

Winner in the Year 5 category was 10-year-old Antra Mathur from Samuel Terry Public School.

After coming so close in previous Year 3 and 4 competitions but stumbling at the final hurdle, Antra said she was surprised to take out the top spot this year.

“I’m gobsmacked, I’m really happy,” she said.

“My topic was ‘secrets’ ... I was talking about how good I was at keeping them but really I was blurting it out to everyone, it was very funny.

“I was confident and I tried to explain what secrets are, and I did have some serious bits as well so it was balanced.”

This is the peak of the inter-school competition that was organised by teachers and sponsored by local politicians Fiona Scott, Stuart Ayres and Tanya Davies.

I do not blame Jamal, like some. Jamal has obviously been very misguided over the years by people who say they want the best for him but in truth are only in it for themselves. When you are a teenage prodigy, so to speak, you struggle to deal with the fame and fortune that comes, particularly if you are not equipped to deal with such things. I feel very sorry for Jamal because I believe he will one day live to regret how he has handled his time in rugby league, but also live to resent those who guided him over the years.

Little collectables but a big passion One Emu Plains family is taking their love of Sylvanian Families to a whole new level DALE DRINKWATER

enny Wainwright and her two kids, Thomas, 4, and Thalia, 2, could almost be Australia’s biggest fan of Sylvanian Families.

The Emu Plains family have spent almost $2000 in the last three years building their collectable toy range of animals, doll houses and furniture, even down to the tiny knives and forks.

Mrs Wainwright, 34, started the collection for her daughter about three years ago when pregnant with her, but fell in love with them herself.

“When I started buying them I got a little bit obsessed. They are so cute so I bought more than I intended to, but now we have quite a collection we can slow down,” she said.

With her collection sitting at around 1000 pieces and counting, Mrs Wainwright has entered to be ‘Australia’s Biggest Fan of Sylvanian Families’.

The detailed collection started in Japan in 1985 and is designed around 1950s rural Britain, with various series including grandparents, seaside, grand hotel and schools.

Nepean Food Services and the NSW Rural Fire Service are now expected to co-locate in the Regentville Hall.

Both organisations made submissions to Council to gain full use of the large hall for their separate services.

Nepean Food Services wished to use the space for additional office space, freezer room space and meeting space for their expanding social

programs. The Rural Fire Service, that is currently adjacent to the hall, requested to use the space to increase the training demand for the 900 volunteer fire fighters in the Cumberland Zone. The Blue Mountains Christadelphians, Panther Squares dancing classes and personal trainers currently use the space, and have been moved previously when emergencies occur. The new co-location agreements will be subject to any declared state of emergency, and the current management committee for the hall will be dissolved.

Council has approved the modification of a development application for a child care centre in St Marys. The modification sought to increase the number of places for children in the centre from 68 to 74. The application includes a single storey building operational as a child care centre from Monday to Friday, with 20 off-street car spaces accessible via a two way driveway loop.

The next Ordinary Council Meeting will be held on Monday, November 23 at 7.30pm in the Council Chambers.

This meeting will present the Operational Plan quarterly reviews, and will present the Annual Report.

The Penrith City Children Services Cooperative (PCCSC), that is sponsored by Penrith Council, has ended the 2014/15 financial year in surplus of $25,000. The not-for-profit organisation is responsible for managing 26 child care facilities across the Penrith Local Government Area. Those facilities provide 17 long day care services, five pre-schools, nine before and after school care services, seven vacation care services and one occasional care service. Max Friend, PCCSC Chairman said he is pleased to report the favourable outcome to Council, that was achieved despite financial challenges and increased market competition. “A small surplus is an excellent result.

Our services are not for profit, but they are also not for loss,” he said. The outcome will provide equity to better position the services of the PCCSC for the coming years.

“I want my children to enjoy them as much as I did when I played with them at my friends’ places.”

And enjoy them, they do.

“I’m glad they love them,” she said.

“They love being able to act out everyday situations like having dinner, watching TV, driving to the supermarket and seeing the doctor.

“Thomas especially loves taking his animal friends on holidays in the caravan and Thalia loves sitting the families down for dinner.”

Sylvanian Families is currently celebrating its 30th birthday, and is looking for the country’s biggest fan. There is a $2000 cash prize for winning – the cost of the Wainwrights’ total collection so far.

Penrith resident, Lea Hicks, said it was a good feeling when she won the Woman of the West award in 2012.

“It was a great thing to be acknowledged for all the things I do,” she said.

The winner of each category receives a grant worth $5000 to further develop their leadership and advocacy work in their local community.

“I donated the $5000 to the charity Australian Women and Children’s Research Foundation (OZWAC) that I was the Chair of at the time,” Mrs Hicks said.

Brooke’s Car Rally a huge success More than $8,000 raised

200th anniversary

Castlereagh Wesleyan Chapel The old Castlereagh Wesleyan Chapel (now part of Penrith Uniting Parish) was built by local landowner John Lees on his property in 1815.

This Sunday, November 15, the congregation is celebrating the 200th anniversary of its formation at 2.30pm.

Around 200 people including Lindsay MP Fiona Scott will attend.

Around $8,500 was raised at Brooke’s Car Rally this year, with the money going to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead and their Epilepsy Research Unit.

Held earlier this month, the event was again a huge success with plenty of support from the local community including some high profile guests such as Penrith Panthers legend and radio commentator Mark Geyer (pictured above with Brooke and her family).

10-year-old Brooke holds the car rally annually to raise money for those in need. Local businesses and residents continue to respond to the event, which will be back again next year.

ost of us don’t really like change, do we? We tend to err on the side of comfort and safety, and will often choose the ‘known’ over the ‘unknown’ just because it’s familiar, even if the ‘unknown’ holds some great possibilities.

You may have seen the diagram of two circles: one small one with ‘your comfort zone’ written inside it, and another larger one, set apart from the small one, with the words ‘where the magic happens’ (or ‘learning zone’).

It is expressing in visual form the fact that you have to move outside of your comfort zone in order for better things, or more valuable experiences, to happen.

There is nothing wrong with staying in your comfort zone. But often the people who do are the same ones who lament that ‘nothing good ever comes my way’ or ‘why are other people so lucky?’. So although there is always a choice to stay comfortable, it comes at a cost.

Sometimes change is forced upon us, and although it can be unpleasant, it should always be viewed as an

opportunity to grow and learn. The learning might simply be ‘I don’t want to go through that again!’ and putting safeguards in place to ensure that it doesn’t. But hopefully, it also gives you some impetus to make some intentional change. Not just change for the sake of it, but using what might appear to be a negative turn of events as a catalyst for some positive change.

So often, it is not the changes themselves that stops us (that is, we can often think of positive reasons why the change is good), but it’s the fear of doing something we haven’t done before.

How do you know if it’s the right direction to take?

You won’t always know.

How do you know it’s going to OK? You don’t.

But don’t let that stop you taking action and learning valuable lessons in the process.

In the words of George Bernard Shaw: “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything”.

am a big believer that hiring the right staff is a very important part of the overall formula for business success.

They are what keeps cash flow levels solid and are the ones that are on the ground daily, echoing your plans and thoughts constantly.

It is vital to get good staff. The best business people will tell you this. It is also very hard to do and only a carefully thought out plan will aid you in finding the right people.

It is also very true that a small team of A+ employees can run rings around a larger team of B and C players. They are smarter, making them more efficient thus meaning they will achieve more. But the plan depends on the workplace and the line of work that is being recruited for.

I have seen firsthand the benefits of how getting better at hiring gives a business greater performance and productivity, increased employee retention and much greater results.

So what do you currently have in your business?

Do you have A+ staff that are motivated, switched on and creative with high

expectations for themselves and others?

Or do you have B and C players that just do enough to get by and be paid for it?

At this point the battle to find and employ the ‘A-listers’ starts.

People are a business’ most valuable asset making hiring a very important management skill. It should be taken seriously.

Some words from Steve Jobs always stick out in my head when talking about the importance of recruiting. It went something like – If you are by yourself in business and want to find a partner you wouldn’t make that decision lightly. He/ she would be half of your company. Why should you take any less time finding a third of your company or a fourth of your company or a fifth of your company?

When you’re growing a business, the first 10 people will determine whether the company succeeds or not. If three were not so great, why would you want a company where 30 per cent of your people are not so great?

A small company depends on great people much more than a big company does.

Turning back Time One year ago...

Oil spill: How popular band’s visit to Penrith was ruined

Y One of the most controversial local stories of 2014 erupted when Penrith Councillors remained unwavering in their support for a prayer hall in Kemps Creek, defeating a rescission motion to send the development application back to public exhibition.

Hundreds of Penrith residents packed into Council’s Chambers carrying anti-mosque placards to express their discontent that at the previous Council meeting, approval had been given to the prayer hall, which will be located on Mamre Road in Kemps Creek.

The Weekender’s front page screamed ‘Penrith divided’ as the city very much split into two camps – those against the prayer hall and those who believed there was no problem with it being built.

The November 14, 2014 edition of the Weekender also featured a piece on former Lindsay MP Jackie Kelly, who declared her political comeback by confirming she would run as an Independent at the March State election.

Kelly was very critical of the Liberal Party.

Meanwhile, a man had to be rescued from his car in South Penrith after a horror crash on Evan Street.

ou would think popular band Midnight Oil coming to Penrith would be a huge coup for the city, but it turned into a controversial event back in 1983.

Midnight Oil appeared in concert at Penrith Park on May 7, 1983, with more than 18,000 people attending.

The night was promoted as a charity concert, called ‘Jobs: Every home should have one’.

Other acts on the bill included Swanee and Matt Finish, but in truth it was all about Midnight Oil. Fans loved the show – but those in charge of Penrith Park were not so happy when they saw the aftermath.

Broken bottles and cans caused significant damage to the ground’s playing surface, as did the feet of the 18,000 people in attendance.

Given the concert was held in the middle of the football season, it was of significant concern to Panthers.

“We gave use of the ground because it was for charity and look what happens,” said football club CEO, Charlie Gibson at the time.

“We will be taking action to make sure no further concerts are held on the ground during the football season.”

The ground was a mess, with broken glass embedded in the ground and ring pulls from cans scattered all over the field.

Penrith was forced to move training while the ground was thoroughly checked by officials, who later gave it the all clear.

Organisers of the concert agreed to reimburse the football club for the cost of the repairs and clean-up.

“Unfortunately, it only takes a few people in the crowd to cause damage and make it difficult for everyone else,” Mr Gibson said.

Midnight Oil coming to Penrith may have been a huge event, but it left a scar on the city – with bad front page press in the following days and weeks.

These days, concerts are not held at Penrith Park (now known as Pepper Stadium). The venue is used almost exclusively for sport, with the playing surface treated extremely carefully.

G

reat writing, like great art, seems effortless.

But like great art, it very rarely is.

This is especially true of the historical fiction genre, which is something acclaimed Australian novelist Judy Nunn knows all about.

Her latest novel Spirits of the Ghan is set in the heart of Australia, and follows two

fictional characters who are involved in the completion of The Ghan railway, one of the biggest civil engineering projects in Australia’s history.

As with all her novels, Judy spent plenty of time researching the subject, including field trips to the Red Centre, before she ever put fingers to the keyboard.

“What would I know about building a mighty railway right from the heart of a desert through to the Top End?” Judy said about the mammoth task of researching her most recent novel.

“You’ve just got to do your homework, and when you do, it becomes exciting, because you bump into all these wonderful strange things that really did happen.”

Judy estimates that as much as 80 per cent of the research material she gathers never makes it into her books, instead she tries to only include the ‘stranger than fiction’ aspects of history that she stumbles upon along the way.

“The facts that I discover that really interest me, they go in there and I think ‘well if I’m that interested in them, the readers will be’,” she said.

“You end up being able to weave this into your plot, without making it sound like a history lesson.”

Along with the historical elements, Judy’s work has a strong focus on setting.

Her passion for remote locations in particular has seen her base books in areas of Australia such as The Pilbara region in Western Australia.

Spirits of the Ghan is the realisation of Judy’s passion for desert landscapes, and the Red Centre in particular.

“You really feel a sense of spirituality there; it’s as if the land is sort of breathing,” she said.

“I’m not a deeply spiritual person myself but I can’t help but feel as if I’m in the presence of something when I’m out in these places.”

While overseas travel is high on the agenda of many young Australians, Judy believes they should make an effort to see more of their own country.

“I think more Australians should travel to these areas and realise this amazing connection our first Australians have with the land,” she said.

“You can really feel that bond yourself, it’s wonderful.”

Judy has written 13 full length novels, sold over one million books worldwide, received praise from both critics and readers, and this year was made a Member of the Order of Australia.

To those who haven’t read her books she may still be Ailsa Stewart from ‘Home and Away’, but though Judy recognises that’s all part of playing a well known character on a long running TV series, she does feel a great sense of satisfaction that most fans that come up to her these days are doing so because of her writing.

“It is very rewarding when people come up to you and say ‘oh you’re Judy Nunn, I love your books’,” she said.

While Judy is currently on a five week Australia-wide book tour – which includes a stop off at Penrith Library – the locations she is yet to write about are sitting patiently in the back of her mind, just waiting for their time to shine.

She’s focused on promoting her current book at the moment, but 2016 is a different story.

“After Christmas I’ll be starting to get a bit nervy and thinking ‘OK, where to next’,” she laughed.

The book is already receiving extraordinary reviews and is expected to sell plenty of copies leading into Christmas.

Spirits of the Ghan was released on November 2 and is now available in book stores and online.

80s rock band Moving Pictures will team up with the prolific singer/songwriter for the ‘A Day in the Sun’ national tour.

The tour will see these two iconic acts performing all their hits at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, December 11.

Moving Pictures has reformed for the tour and in October released a new album ‘Picture This’, which features acoustic renditions of all their classic tracks.

Ê Legendary Aussie actress Sigrid Thornton will return to the small screen soon as a star on the new series of prison drama ‘Wentworth’.

Thornton will play Sonia Stevens, a character described as a wealthy but self-made dynamo behind a cosmetics empire. She comes into the prison on remand, suspected of the murder of a missing woman. Interestingly, Thornton once appeared in ‘Prisoner’, the show that inspired ‘Wentworth’.

Ê Christmas may still be a little while away but Channel Seven has already announced the first singers for this year’s ‘Carols in the Domain’. Samantha Jade is Carols ambassador this year while Dami Im, Adam Brand, Justine Clarke, Johnny Ruffo and Mark Vincent are all set to perform. More singers will be announced in the coming weeks. ‘Carols in the Domain’ will air at 8.30pm on Saturday, December 19.

Ê The 2016 Logie Awards will add a number of new categories to its line-up.

EVENT Great Euro Circus

At Penrith Paceway until Sunday, Nov 15 // KATE REID The Great Euro Circus is a little different to other touring circus shows. The show doesn’t feature any exotic, wild or caged animals and instead offers audiences adrenalincharged acts like Australia’s only touring Human Cannonball and the Globe of Death, where motorbike riders come within inches of each other as they ride around the inside of a large metal cage.

But for myself the standout of the show was the Freestyle Kings.

The whole crowd was in awe as the freestyle motorcross team came roaring through the entrance way before riding up a jump and soaring through the air straight over the Globe of Death.

As with any good circus show the

skill and strength involved in the acrobatic acts, including trapeze and aerial silks, was extraordinary.

It was nice to see the addition of a samba themed quick change act, which, like all good magic, still has myself and my guest confused as to how it was done!

The show also featured vaudevillian comedy, which was probably more targeted towards the kids than the adults, and Felix the Strongman, who we watched get run over by a 2.5 tonne ute! (spoiler alert – he survived).

Overall the Great Euro Circus was a highly entertaining show that is likely to be a hit with families.

As tough as it might be for a bloke to admit that a ‘chick flick’ was actually an entertaining experience, ‘Trainwreck’ is probably one of the better of the ‘lonely girl finds loves, loses it and finds it again’ genre.

Did I just give away the ending?

The film focuses on magazine writer Amy (Amy Schumer) and her failure, or fear, to find a male partner with any real long-term relationship prospects.

When she meets sports doctor Aaron Conners (Bill Hader) to write a feature story, her same love ‘em and leave ‘em pattern emerges – until he decides he’s not going to walk out so easily.

The casting of ‘Trainwreck’ is what makes it a really entertaining film – Schumer is hilarious and just that little bit different to your typical Hollywood

Christmas arrives in Penrith Yes, it’s that time of year again. It may only be November but Christmas has arrived in Penrith.

Last Friday, Penrith’s Christmas Tree was officially launched with a fantastic community celebration in the CBD. A huge crowd turned out for the tree lighting and to see the fantastic line-up of local entertainment.

This is the third year the Penrith CBD Corporation have worked on the Christmas Tree lighting.

It signals the official start of the Christmas season in Penrith.

“It’s about lighting the tree as a community to bring in the Christmas period,” said Gai Hawthorn from the Penrith CBD Corporation.

Despite bad weather earlier in the day, the event went ahead as planned.

Braised Lamb Shanks & Root Vegetable Puree Serves 2, with leftovers For the lamb shanks Ingredients

• 2 garlic cloves, minced • 1 tablespoon tomato paste • 1 cup dry red wine • 3 cups beef stock • 1.5 ounce container veal demi-glace (optional)

• 3 slices bacon, diced • 2 lamb shanks • 2 stalks celery, diced • 2 carrots, peeled and diced • 1/2 onion, peeled and diced • 1 leek, rinsed thoroughly and diced

• 3-4 sprigs fresh thyme • 2 bay leaves • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Preparation 1. Preheat oven to 190°C. In a large Dutch oven, cook the bacon over high heat until crisp and all the fat is rendered. Remove the bacon and set aside for another use. Meanwhile, pat the shanks dry and season with salt and pepper. Add the shanks to the pan (one at a time if necessary) and brown well on all sides. Remove the shanks and set aside.

2. Lower the heat to medium. Add the celery, carrots, onion, and leeks and sauté until tender, about 3-5 minutes. Add the garlic and sauté for another minute. Stir in the tomato paste until the vegetables are well coated.

3. Pour in the red wine, increase heat to high, and reduce until almost cooked out. Add the beef stock, demi-glace, thyme, and bay leaves. Nestle the shanks into the braising liquid. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, cover, and place in the oven. Cook the lamb for 2-2 1/2 hours, rotating the meat once during cooking time, until the meat is fall-off-the-bone tender.

4. Remove the shanks from the Dutch oven. Strain the braising liquid through a fine mesh sieve, discarding cooked vegetables. Season with salt and pepper, if necessary. Serve the shanks atop root vegetable puree and drizzle with sauce. (This would also be good served over mashed potatoes, creamy polenta, or pappardelle.)

For the root vegetable puree Ingredients • 2 carrots, peeled and medium diced • 2 sweet potatoes, peeled and medium diced

• 2 parsnips, peeled and medium diced • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter • 1/4 cup heavy cream, warmed

• Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Preparation 1. In a medium saucepan, cover the carrots, sweet potatoes, and parsnips with about 2 inches of water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to a simmer, and cook until tender and easy to pierce with a knife, about 20 minutes.

2. Place root vegetables in a food processor fitted with blade. Add butter, warm cream, and salt and pepper to taste. Process until the vegetables are smooth, creamy puree. Return to the saucepan and keep warm on lowest heat until ready to serve.

It’s easily the largest horse race on the planet, with as many as 700 million people from 120 countries tuning in to watch the event unfold, according to Victoria Racing Club Chief Executive Dale Monteith in an interview with the Daily Telegraph.

Considering that the day of the Melbourne Cup is a public holiday for all of Victoria, with many people from other states also taking time off work to watch the event, perhaps it’s not too surprising that it has earned itself the reputation as ‘the race that stops a nation’.

But is this notion justified?

Well, while many businesses’ bank accounts might feel the impact of closing up shop for the day, it seems as though Victoria – and the rest of Australia, too – benefit financially from the race.

This suggests that rather than grinding the country to a halt, the event actually helps the state move forwards and generate more money.

The 2014 Melbourne Cup Carnival contributed $195 million to the Victorian economy.

Who knows what the result was for the 2015 event.

They can scratch repetitively on their bodies, or lick at their feet. Some animals with seasonal allergies will madly rub their face along the lounge chairs or on the ground.

The skin around the eyes and in the ear canals can look very inflamed.

Some pets’ only signs of seasonal allergies are repeated ear infections at certain times of the year.

What can we do to help these pets? Treatment is recommended for pets that suffer from seasonal allergies to make them comfortable.

Intense itching and skin inflammation can cause real suffering and affect quality of life for many animals.

Treatment may involve a course of antihistamines for the period of time that the pet is reactive.

There are some excellent animal antihistamines, and sometimes your veterinarian may recommend human medications.

So if you see your pet itching, scratching, rubbing or sneezing, then make an appointment with your veterinarian to have this assessed.

Whilst “cure” may not be possible, for many animals their symptoms can be controlled and they can be given back a comfortable life again.

In addition, water is 15 times more resistant than air because there are no gravitational forces.

Working out in a pool for 30

minutes gives you similar benefits of a two-hour, land-based workout.

Water accommodates resistance – the harder you push or pull through it, the more resistance you experience.

While land workouts provide resistance against the pull of gravity, water workouts provide resistance in any direction.

That’s a tremendous advantage in sports cross training because athletes strengthen their muscles in exactly the motions they’ll need in their sports.

Training in the water additionally ensures that you stay cool in warmer temperatures and prevent overheating.

Many people use water resistance training when injured to maintain their cardiovascular fitness with less impact and therefore less stress on joints, bones and muscles because of the buoyancy of water.

The water is also ideal for post match recovery.

We often see the Penrith Panthers players down at our centre for a session the morning after a match.

being proportionate to their financial contribution. This means the parent owns a percentage of the property and if push comes to shove the property can be sold to ensure that the parent gets their money back (or an amount of money equal to their percentage share of the property). This is the most secure way of putting this agreement into effect.

The second way that such an agreement can be put into effect is by way of “joint tenancy” whereby the parent becomes a joint owner of the property.

The disadvantage of this arrangement is that upon the death of one co-owner (most likely the parent) the surviving co-owner will take the whole property as their own. This is likely to dismay any siblings upon the parent’s death who will miss out on inheriting a share of the parents’ funds invested into the project.

The third way is by way of “lease and loan”. This is similar to a retirement village arrangement whereby the child grants a lease to the parent to live in the property in return for a “loan”, being a financial contribution from the parent. This is the best way to secure the parent’s interest without them actually taking a legal ownership in the property.

Before you consider a granny flat arrangement it is important that you seek the advice of Centrelink as to how much the arrangement may affect your pension. It is also advisable to obtain advice from an accountant as to any capital gains tax liabilities that may arise as a result of the arrangement.

Swedish car maker Volvo Cars is planning to develop technology that can detect kangaroos to avoid collisions.

Earlier this month, local testing involving real kangaroos took place in the Australian Capital Territory.

A team of Volvo Cars safety engineers arrived from Sweden recently to study and film the roadside behaviour of kangaroos in their natural setting.

The data Volvo Cars collects will be used to develop Australia’s first kangaroo detection and collision avoidance software.

According to the NRMA, each year there are over 20,000 kangaroo strikes on Australian roads which cost over $75 million in claims. The human cost of serious injuries and fatalities from animal collisions is incalculable.

To help address this, Volvo Cars is developing a unique system that uses radar and camera technology to detect kangaroos and automatically apply the brakes if an accident is imminent.

“Whereas Volvo Cars’ Pedestrian Detection technology is geared towards city driving, animal detection is designed to work at highway speeds,” said Volvo Safety Engineer, Martin Magnusson.

“In Sweden we have done research involving larger, slower moving animals like elk, reindeer and cows.”

rent Merrin has won a premiership, a State of Origin series and played for his country, but now Penrith’s prized new recruit wants to take his career to the next level.

The 26-year-old representative forward began his new life at the Panthers this week following seven seasons at the St George-Illawarra Dragons where he won a competition in 2010.

Speaking for the first time as a Panther on Tuesday, Merrin said he had “butterflies” when he first put on the Penrith training kit for the first time.

“It was different… I felt a bit nervous but it was good, it was refreshing to put the new kit on,” he said.

“It’s a new chapter, new challenges and hopefully a great future.”

Merrin’s arrival at the foot of the Mountains, on a three year deal, will no doubt add plenty of punch as well as a touch of class to Penrith’s young and up and coming forward pack.

Merrin said he plans to keep things simple with a focus on becoming a better player both on and off the field.

“My job is to play the best footy I can and lead by example on the field and on the training paddock, that’s the way I went about it at the Dragons and it shouldn’t change too much here,” he said.

“I came here with my own personal job and that was to play the best footy I possibly can, and take my game to a new level.”

Merrin touched on his recent engagement to world champion Australian surfer Sally Fitzgibbons, which took place on a getaway to Vanuatu earlier this month.

Merrin, who has been with the mad Dragons supporter for a number of years, said converting Fitzgibbons to a Penrith fan was part of the proposal.

“Before I proposed I said she has to be a Panther,” he said.

“She’s supported me through the whole process when I made the decision to come to Penrith, so she’s with me all the way.”

In other news, winger Dallin WateneZelezniak has re-signed with Penrith until the end of the 2017 season.

Half in waiting ready to take his chance Refreshingly honest, new Panthers recruit Te Maire Martin reveals why he quit the Wests Tigers NATHAN TAYLOR

e Maire Martin has only been a member of the Penrith Panthers for a little under two weeks, but already he likes what he sees.

Following a stellar season with the Wests Tigers that saw him named Holden Cup Five-eighth of the Year, Martin was snapped up by the Panthers on a three year deal in early July.

Speaking with the Weekender, the 20-year-old superstar in the making opened up on his new surrounds and the benefits of having everything under the one roof.

“The Panthers are very organised, very professional,” Martin said.

“Everything from on-field to the gym and changing rooms, we even get breakfast and lunch, it’s all there – it’s a onestop-shop.

“At the Tigers you’d sometimes have to train at Leichhardt and then travel to Concord to use the gym. It’s good to have everything in one place.”

Martin also praised Penrith’s training staff for helping him keep fit, healthy and focused.

“Everyone is really professional around

“We get a lot of stuff here that you didn’t get at the Tigers. Everyone is happy and everyone is ready to give you a hand.”

Martin is receiving plenty of support from current Panthers halves combination Jamie Soward and Peter Wallace.

It’s ironic given if all goes to plan, he will one day replace one of them in Penrith’s top side.

“Wallace and Soward are teaching me a lot,” he said.

“They’ve already said on our days off that they’ll help me with my kicking, they’ve really taken me under their wing.”

With a blossoming career on show at the Tigers these last few seasons, many supporters were puzzled as to why the joint venture club let go such a talented rising star.

“I played just one game of NSW Cup last year but I didn’t get another,” he said.

“I don’t think the Tigers really liked me, I thought I had one of my best games playing NSW Cup but I think that was during the time when I told them I was leaving the following year. I don’t know if they kicked up a stink or what not, but they always had their favourites.”

Clearly a little disenchanted with the Tigers, Martin saw an opportunity at the Panthers to boost his chances of playing first grade.

“Luke Brooks and Mitchell Moses were always going to be there a long time, they’ve invested too much money into them to go chuck the new guy in,” he said.

“The Tigers were pretty good in the end and understood that I needed to go. Hopefully I made the right choice about coming to Penrith.”

With an aging halves pairing heading towards the end of their careers, it’s hotly tipped that Martin and Matt Moylan could one day steer the Panthers into the next generation.

Netball New Paige in Hadley’s story with England tour looming NATHAN TAYLOR

enrith netballer Paige Hadley says it never gets old hearing her name called out as a member of the Australian Diamonds squad.

Last week the 23-year-old was once again announced as a member of the world champion Diamonds, who will travel to England in January for a three match series.

Hadley, who this year represented Australia at the Netball World Cup and recent Constellation Cup against New Zealand, said she was thrilled to be part of the team yet again.

“I think any time you get a chance to wear the green and gold dress is pretty special, and to get to go to the UK as well is going to be something different,” she told the Weekender.

“I’ve only ever been to Glasgow in the UK before but not London or Manchester.

I’m so excited even though it’s going to be freezing when we are over there.”

The last time the Diamonds toured England, they were thrashed in the series 3-0.

However a lot has changed since their 2013 loss with new teammates and a refreshing air of confidence in the Austral-

ian team having just won the Netball World Cup back in August.

Hadley said she and her teammates will be out to turn around the efforts of the last time the Diamonds toured England.

“In 2013 when they lost 3-0 in the series, it pretty much sparked that something needed to change,” she said.

“The training program is going to change for us and will become more in depth.”

That’s not to say England won’t be tough to beat.

“We know England is an improving side and they’ll be in season, so it’s going to be a tough tournament but a good one,” Hadley said.

Hadley was one of four NSW Swifts players chosen in the 12-woman team with fellow teammates Sharni Layton, Caitlin Thwaites and newcomer Stephanie Wood also selected.

“Sharni and Caitlin were in the recent World Cup team but Steph Wood is one of my best mates and I’m really excited she got the call up for the UK tour,” Hadley said.

“It’s really exciting for her and I hope she gets to debut over there.”

The 2016 Australian Diamonds Tour of England begins on January 20 in Liverpool, England before moving to London for the remaining two games.

Mega exciting time for local basketball Mega Ball concept aims to get more young boys involved in basketball, but it’s about more than sport NATHAN TAYLOR

he Penrith Basketball Association has successfully launched a new and exciting juniors program aimed to get more young boys playing the sport.

Named Mega Ball, the program is designed for boys aged six to 12-years-old and teaches them the fundamentals of the game through skills, basic game concepts, rules and violations all in a mega fun, mega safe and mega exciting environment.

After successfully running a similar program for girls named Pink Ball for the past 18 months, Penrith Basketball Association Participation Officer, Jarrod Moore, said it was time to give local boys their very own program.

“We’ve had Pink Ball for the last year and a half and this is the first time we’ve decided to do something with the boys,” he said.

“We were running other programs that were sufficient enough for boys at the time but now basketball is growing in popularity fast we had to do something more.”

basketball, it’s also designed to help with their physical, mental and social development whilst boosting their confidence in preparing to play in competitions.

“By having Mega Ball around it’s made it a more competitive environment because boys are up against boys,” Moore said.

“I hope that’ll translate into their social, mental and physical development as well.”

Mega Ball officially began last week but kids are welcome to join the program at any time.

It’s hoped that the concept continues to grow in popularity and will become a major success for the Association.

Mega Ball is held at the Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre in Cambridge Park from 4pm to 5pm every Friday afternoon.

CRICKET: The first day of the Penrith Cricket Club’s two-day match against Bankstown at Howell Oval was called off last Saturday due to wet weather and the state of the pitch.

Both Penrith and Bankstown will return to the pitch this Saturday morning in a reduced overs (120 overs) match.

BASEBALL: The Penrith Panthers first grade side have continued their losing ways, going down to Central Coast 5-1 in Round 8 of the NSW State Baseball League.

The Panthers, who are missing many of their stars due to Sydney Blue Sox duty, will look to bounce back this weekend when they take on the Ryde Hawks in Round 9.

GRIDIRON: After winning their first game the previous round, the Nepean Ducks have fallen back to earth with a crushing loss to the North Western Predators 54-12 in Round 9 of the Gridiron NSW competition.

The Ducks will now look to return to the winner’s circle when they meet Central Coast in Round 10 this weekend.

NETBALL: Congratulations to the following PDNA Junior Representative players for making the Western Sydney Academy of Sport Netball Program. The players include Macey Duncan, Natalina Suaalii, Chaise Vassallo and Violet Wetsteyn.

FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers W-League team soared back into top four contention with a never-say-die 2-1 victory over the Newcastle Jets at Magic Park last weekend.

After Jets player Jenna Kingsley scored in the second minute, the Wanderers hit back in the second half via Chloe O’Brien in the 57th minute and Camerlina Moscato in the 93rd.

The sixth-placed Wanderers will now take on the last-placed Melbourne Victory this Sunday afternoon at Marconi Stadium.

FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers almost got off to the perfect start in their National Youth League opening match with late heartbreak denying them a classic win against Newcastle Jets at Magic Park.

A double to Lachlan Scott and a single goal to Tariq Maia looked to have wrapped up the points for the Wanderers but a 93rd minute equaliser saw the Jets pull off an unlikely 3-3 draw.

The Wanderers will look to continue their good early season form when they take on Central Coast this Sunday morning at Marconi Stadium.

Wanderers surge NATHAN TAYLOR

or the first time since the 2013/14 season, the Western Sydney Wanderers recorded back to back victories last Saturday night with a 2-1 come from behind win over the Newcastle Jets.

After falling behind 1-0 late in the game, the Wanderers made it two wins on the trot after new recruits Andreu and Mark Nichols slotted home a goal each in the dying stages.

Andreu got his second goal of the season via a penalty in the 79th minute before Nichols blasted home a great goal from the top of the box in the 86th.

Speaking with the media on Monday, Andreu said he was happy to add another goal to his name.

“Of course I’m happy, I don’t usually score goals and this is my second in the league,” he said.

The 32-year-old Spaniard said the team were building in confidence each and every week.

“After two wins we have more confidence... we are in a really good way,” he said.
