mall businesses in Cranebrook Village Shopping Centre are struggling to accept they might not come back when the centre closes in six months.

Business owners received a letter last week asking them to vacate by November 6 for complete demolition of the centre that will make way for Woolworths and Aldi.

Kate Brown has seen three generations of families come through her store in the last 25 years, but said this will be the end of her Cranebrook newsagency.

“It’s a major end of an era, we can’t wait two years to reopen – it will be the end of us,” Ms Brown said.

Ms Brown said it feels like a slap in the face to have been told construction would be rolled out in stages, then for plans to change underneath them.

“Penrith City Council told us they were going to build around us... we saw it coming, but we were told we weren’t being shut down,” she said.

Construction was to be rolled out in stages, but when Ritchies IGA elected to leave sooner than expected, new owners Cranebrook Village Pty Ltd with project developers AusPacific Property Group decided to completely demolish the whole centre at once.

A Cranebrook Village Pty Ltd representative said the previous staging concept was based around Ritchies IGA’s long term lease until 2016, and them leaving will speed up the process.

But locals will be forced to shop elsewhere while construction is underway.

Budget promise a winner with locals Prime Minister Tony Abbott makes $840 million preschool pledge during visit to Jordan Springs DALE DRINKWATER

elinda Pale Lei from Cranebrook is a mother of four young girls, and was concerned over affordable preschooling for parents who wanted to go back to work.

“It needs to be worthwhile going back to work,” she said.

Mrs Lei has now welcomed an Abbott Government announcement that committed $840 million over two years to subsidise the cost of preschooling, aimed to make it more affordable to families, and worthwhile getting back into the workforce.

Mrs Lei spoke to Prime Minister Tony Abbott last Sunday when he visited the booming suburb of Jordan Springs with Education Minister Christopher Pyne, Senator Scott Ryan and Member for Lindsay Fiona Scott.

Mr Abbott confirmed $840 million will be delivered in the May 12 Federal Budget, ensuring preschool access for all Australians will continue for another two years.

It’s a significant win for local families.

“It’s very important that as many young Australians as possible don’t just go to childcare but they have preschool as well,

and that’s what this money is guaranteeing,” he said.

“I feel very pleased that this is a Government which is able to deliver on a commitment which was started by the former Government but never funded.

“They didn’t put the money in the budget to make it happen, this money will be in the budget under this Coalition Government.”

Mr Abbott explained that the funding is only over two years to ensure that there is certainty, as preschooling is under review as part of the Federation White Paper.

Mr Pyne added that for the first time, Federal funding for preschools will be indexed to inflation, adding an extra $30 million to the program over 2016 and 2017.

“There’s absolutely no excuse whatsoever for states and territories to not provide a full 15 hours minimum of preschool for four-year-olds in Australia,” he said.

“It is important for the states and territories to ensure that money reaches every single child, but most importantly it underlines that at four-years-old, we are expecting every Australian to begin their education in a formal sense.”

Star power used in the right way: The speech that stopped a nation The annual TV Week Logie Awards are usually a bit of a drag, to be honest.

There’s the annual confusion over what ‘popular’ and ‘outstanding’ means.

There’s the presenter banter with awful jokes that rarely, if ever, bring a level of laughter beyond what you offer to Uncle Jeff on Christmas Day after a few too many drinks.

There’s the overseas singers we get to perform at an event that is supposed to celebrate Australian entertainment.

The list goes on.

But last Sunday night, Carrie Bickmore produced a Logies moment that will be remembered for a long, long time to come.

Upon winning the Gold Logie, she didn’t thank faceless people in the TV industry who the majority of people watching the telecast have never heard of.

She didn’t thank a long list of castmates or producers, and she certainly didn’t inflate her own ego.

She chose one of television’s biggest stages to make a statement about brain cancer, the terrible disease that claimed her husband’s life in 2010.

Ms Bickmore has a new partner, and a new child, but the pain of losing Greg Lange just after Christmas five years ago has obviously never subsided.

As Ms Bickmore, who hosts ‘The Project’ on Channel 10, said on the night, an average of one person every five hours is diagnosed with brain cancer. Only two in 10 people diagnosed with brain cancer will survive for at least five years.

It is a horrible condition and as Marcella Zemanek wrote in The Sydney Morning Herald on Tuesday, it is horrifying to consider the lack of awareness and funding for brain cancer research.

The incredible social media and mainstream media response to Ms Bickmore’s “Beanies for Brain Cancer� campaign was an incredible example of using star power for the right reasons.

It was an incredible example of using star power for the right reasons

My family is currently dealing with a cancer diagnosis. It’s not brain cancer, but it’s a very serious battle.

Many people, in fact most of us, have been touched by cancer in some way, but until you live on that roller coaster of having yourself or an immediate family member in such a fight, you don’t really appreciate the enormity of what the battle is like.

And I think that’s what touched me in particular with Carrie Bickmore’s speech on Sunday night.

It wasn’t self indulgent, it wasn’t designed to boost her popularity and it wasn’t done for any personal gain.

It was a raw, emotional speech from a woman who has been on the roller coaster.

She also happens to be a celebrity. Cancer does not discriminate.

Next weekend (May 16-17) the annual Relay For Life will be held in Penrith. It is an incredible event that in itself drives home the important message of cancer research, celebrates survivors and remembers those who didn’t make it.

If you’ve never attended before, I’d urge each and every one of you to spend at least part of your weekend down at Howell Oval.

Also here in Penrith, there’s an annual event that raises money specifically for brain cancer research – it’s the Music For Life ball, which will be held on Friday, June 12.

There’s just two events where local people can play their part in the fight against cancer.

As for Carrie Bickmore, what an outstanding, brave individual.

In a world where we are often determined to be offended, and everything somebody with a profile says is dissected on social media, her decision to do what she did on Sunday night wouldn’t have been an easy one.

What a champion.

Penrith pools closed for winter as membership numbers take a dive DALE DRINKWATER

he Penrith Swimming Centre has taken the unprecedented step of closing for winter.

Until September 1, the Penrith Swimming Centre has closed its gates to the public, but has opened the doors to its Ripples St Marys Leisure Centre for members at no extra cost.

Those not wanting to travel to St Marys will be left out in the cold.

Ripples Leisure and Hydrotherapy Centre’s Acting General Manager, Chris Brown, said current members can either hold their membership, or use the St Marys indoor pool without paying the price difference.

“There is a price difference between Penrith and St Marys memberships,” he said.

“St Marys is a little more expensive because it’s indoors and there are more costs associated with keeping it running, so the price is higher.”

Mr Brown said that over winter this would be better for patrons who would normally have had to bear the brunt of a freezing Penrith pool.

“We don’t have an indoor pool at Penrith at all, and it’s quite a long way from the pool to the change rooms, especially when the outside temperature

is freezing,” he said.

Mr Brown said in addition to falling numbers of Penrith pool users in the last three years, winter causes an even bigger drop that just isn’t financially viable.

“We don’t have too many memberships through the winter period,” he said.

“The cost of running a facility for a couple of people isn’t very economic.”

During the closure, the pool will also undergo some essential maintenance, such as asset renewal work including the repair of expansion joints and tiling around the pool.

Mr Brown confirmed there have been no further discussions about Penrith Swimming Centre being closed over future winter periods.

Jamisontown: 20-year-old charged over break and enter

South Penrith: Teenager attacked by two men

A 20-year-old man has been arrested following an alleged break and enter at Gasman Bikes on Mulgoa Road in Jamisontown.

On Saturday, May 2, at around 4.30am an unknown amount of people allegedly used the back lot to Gasman Bikes and a work tool of some description to access the shop and steal two motorbikes.

They allegedly tried to load the bikes into a stolen white van from Glenorie but in the process of the break and enter, set the alarm off.

A work truck allegedly parked the van in, blocking the group from escaping in the van.

The 20-year-old was then found by the dog squad after police arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area. He was arrested and charged with ‘break and enter and steal’ with his bail refused. He is set to appear before Penrith Local Court today.

Two men are wanted by Penrith Local Area Command after an alleged attack on a 16-year-old South Penrith boy on Monday afternoon.

The two males, both described as Pacific Islander in appearance, allegedly had a conversation with the victim on a bus they were all on.

When the group of three got off the bus on Wardell Drive in Penrith, the two men allegedly started questioning the victim.

At around 2.30pm, the young boy was allegedly being demanded to give his wallet and any extra cash he had to the two men which is when a struggle allegedly ensued.

The victim was able to escape after one of the men fell to the ground.

He suffered minor scratches to his chest and had a ripped shirt.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.

On Thursday, April 30, the Proactive Crime Team from Penrith ran an operation in conjunction with Loss Prevention Officers around Penrith.

They targeted Big W, Target, Coles, Bunnings, Office Works and the Nepean Village shops.

On Monday, detectives from Penrith executed a search warrant at a Windsor residence where they arrested a 37-year-old man for a crime he allegedly committed on April 9.

A Glenbrook doctor allegedly misplaced his work bag after leaving it on the back of a motorbike, subsequently losing his credit cards.

The cards were used at a number of stores in the Penrith area where over $3000 was spent.

M4 Widening The Australian and NSW governments are building WestConnex, a 33 kilometre motorway, linking the M4 and M5 motorways for the first time.

ore than a month on from the State Election, people who handed out ‘how to vote’ cards for the No Land Tax Party (NLTP) are still waiting to be paid.

Some 3000 people across NSW worked for the NLTP in the lead-up to the March 28 election, and some feel ripped off after still not receiving any of their promised money.

Penrith resident Allyssia Lloyd worked three full days for the NLTP, and as a student relied on the money to support her for the last month.

“I’m supposed to be getting paid $1,050 for 35 hours of work over three, full 11 to 12 hour days,” she said.

“It’s just so much money to have worked for and not be paid – I’m a student living out of home and need the money to pay my bills.”

Ms Lloyd found the job on a closed social group on Facebook named ‘Sydney Promo Staff’. She has accepted paid work through the group before.

She said she felt uncomfortable with the arrangements, and despite hearing rumours she wouldn’t get paid, Ms Lloyd trusted the registered political party.

“I feel dumb, I feel so dumb. Especially

“If you threaten, harass or defame us YOU WILL NOT BE PAID – EVER. We’d just love to meet you in court,” he wrote.

by April 20, and payment by Friday, April 24.

By Wednesday, April 22, another apology email was sent, that urged Ms Lloyd to contact a specific Fair Work Ombudsman if she had any concerns – who Ms Lloyd emailed.

On 2GB Radio last week, Ray Hadley said he tried to warn people not to hand out the ‘how to vote’ cards because they wouldn’t get their money.

Craig Field from Top Drops liquor store said it’s hard to believe his business will go back in the centre with the likelihood of a BWS moving in when Woolworths does.

“It’s hard for independent liquor stores to get back in centres... if they put in a BWS, where do we go?” he asked.

“We’ve been told to leave, and we haven’t been told we have another business when they rebuild. That’s tough to handle, and tough for the 13 staff I employ.

“I don’t want to speculate. I’m still hopeful, they haven’t said no yet.”

enrith City Councillors are divided on whether or not to have ‘No Coal Seam Gas’ (CSG) signage attached to the city’s welcome signs.

Greens Councillor Michelle Tormey requested a report into the cost of installing ‘anti-CSG’ signage at Penrith City’s entry points, and said it is to send a message of support to surrounding areas.

“Part of the ‘no CSG’ signage is about being in solidarity with those communities who are being impacted,” she said.

“It’s also about sending a really strong message to the Government and to those companies that may want to come into our LGA to extract that kind of gas.”

The CSG industry is a controversial issue in Australia, and Penrith City Council has previously grounded its stance against CSG production or exploration, and sought a ban on such in the Penrith LGA. Cr Tormey is concerned for the indirect effects that CSG exploration in surrounding areas will have on the Penrith LGA. “Just to our south we have production wells in the Campbelltown and Camden areas, and some of them are really close to the Nepean River, which is upstream to us,” she said.

Councillor John Thain said he is against fracking and CSG exploration in the area, but suggested cheaper ways to go spread the message.

“Maybe put ‘no CSG’ in the Mayoral Minute, or in our newsletter which will be at a lower cost,” he said.

Other Councillors don’t believe the signage is necessary. Councillor Bernard Bratusa questioned the relevance of ‘no CSG’ signage in the area.

“We don’t currently have any CSG mining do we? I didn’t think there was any CSG activation in our city,” he said.

Marcus Cornish said it could lead to all sorts of other signage requests.

Council resolved to defer the issue until further information is provided.

Greens have got it wrong on airport: Why Badgerys Creek will be a winner for western Sydney ne of the advantages of representing a minor political party is that because you aren’t trying to win government, you never have to deliver on your promises.

But that fact should not excuse politicians from minor parties from offering genuine, workable solutions to policy challenges facing the community.

Increasingly, minor parties in this country and overseas are crafting opportunist and negative election positions rather than proposing solutions.

So it is with the Greens and their approach to the commonwealth’s plan to build a second Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek. The NSW Greens oppose the development of the Badgerys Creek airport, but they also want to close the existing Kingsford Smith airport and build a new airport at an imaginary, unnamed site outside the Sydney basin, which they would connect to the city by high-speed rail. If this were put in place, Sydney would be the only global city without an airport. It’s the stuff of fantasy. It has no place in the world of serious policy debate. Yet this has been Greens policy for the whole of this century.

members acknowledge this is not practical. Yet the policy remains and enables the party to campaign for zero impact of aviation activity anywhere, despite the fact modern aviation is a driver of economic activity.

The community has the right to expect that serious parties come to the table with ideas capable of implementation, not just complaints.

Regrettably, the Greens have given up serious participation in the decades-long debate about Sydney’s aviation needs.

The Badgerys Creek airport will create thousands of jobs for the people of western Sydney. It will provide a huge boost not only for the economy of NSW but for the entire nation.

Before the Abbott government’s decision to proceed with construction of the Badgerys Creek airport, the former Labor government examined whether there were other options. The research identified the only possible alternative airport site at Wilton, but it was a higher cost and an inferior site to Badgerys Creek, where the Hawke Labor government had already purchased the land and put in place strict environmental controls.

The Greens opposed Wilton, too. In the light of this, their proposal to banish Sydney’s airport to an unnamed site and to link it to the city with a high-speed rail line cannot be taken seriously.

The comprehensive study into the plan to build a high-speed rail line from Brisbane to Melbourne via Sydney and Canberra found that 67km of tunnelling in Sydney would be necessary for it to operate.

It’s a serious project worthy of support.

But, like any major infrastructure project, high-speed rail would affect communities along the route. Tunnels require exhausts.

Construction creates inconvenience.

Delivering high-speed rail, just like building the Badgerys Creek airport, will require explanation of the benefits and broad support across the political spectrum.

Indeed, it is likely that the challenges of high-speed rail construction will create issues over a far wider area than the second airport.

In short, it will require political representatives to act on principle rather than seek to exploit local communities’ fear of change for political gain. Given the Greens’ record on opposing a second

Sydney airport, opposing the Moorebank Intermodal, which will take freight off trucks and on to rail, as well as opposing safety upgrades to the Pacific Highway, it would be remarkable if they did not confect reasons to oppose high-speed rail in practice.

When it comes to economic infrastructure, the Greens are political opportunists.

If this criticism sounds too harsh, consider the tactics being employed by the UK Greens in the campaign for this week’s British election.

The Tories have proposed to spend more than $30 billion to construct a high-speed rail system linking eight out of 10 of the UK’s major cities.

The Liberal Democrats back this nationbuilding project. Labour also supports high-speed rail.

But in a bizarre twist, the UK Greens oppose the project.

They argue it will inconvenience nearby residents.

Never mind the productivity benefits to the British economy, the jobs the project would create or the opportunities for economic development in cities along the route of the track.

Parking management within the Penrith City Centre is a multi-faceted and complex issue.

It has no one definitive solution but we are working towards tailoring outcomes for a wide range of users.

Council operates 30 per cent of on and off street parking in the Penrith City Centre.

These 3,935 spaces are all free and nearly 60 per cent are unrestricted by time.

The remaining 70 per cent are provided by Transport for NSW, private car park operators and the major shopping centres.

Community expectations for more parking are high.

Council is collecting data on the usage patterns of parking which will contribute to future decisions.

We are a very car centric community.

Building more carparks encourages more people to drive adding to congestion on our roads and adding to the difficulty of moving around our city.

The feasibility of a decked car park has been discussed within Council and possible sites identified.

The cost to build such a structure would invariably lead to paid park-

ing being introduced across the City Centre.

Studies on parking to date have had a consistent message about getting the balance right to ensure economic growth and investment while managing traffic congestion and protecting public amenity.

Vibrant city centres around the world focus on delivering high quality public spaces that can support access via a diverse range of transport modes to support active streets.

Council adopted the Penrith City Centre Parking Strategy in 2011.

The strategy includes a suite of short, medium and long term strategies and actions which contains key recommendations relating to paid parking, future decked parking structures as well as development controls around parking in the City.

There is no right or wrong answer on parking in the City Centre.

Council is committed to balancing the opportunities and challenges that are part of Penrith being a growing regional city.

Regentville Fire and Rescue are also currently trialling a new roster system where the crew will work 24 hours, have 24 hours off, come back for another 24 hours and then have five days off.

“It’s not as bad as it sounds – I’m actually handling it pretty well,” Ms Halloway said.

FRNSW has just entered its campaign period which is the month of May, with an emphasis on recruiting more women to the ranks.

The only woman at Regentville fire station, Erica Halloway, says she is glad she chose to join the Fire Rescue crew.

“I was a Physical Education teacher before I joined but after speaking with a friend who is a firefighter, I knew it was something I wanted to do,” she said.

“I work with awesome people and it’s just a great job all round.”

FRNSW say that out of their 4332 permanent firefighters in NSW, about 195 or 4.5 per cent of them are female.

FRNSW Commissioner Greg Mullins said they are keen to reach out to women who have an interest in this line of work.

“We are particularly interested in reaching out to fit and healthy women, most of whom have probably never thought of becoming a firefighter,” he said.

“I’m not saying people can’t go in there, but let them go through a gate that we can control.”

According to the Western Sydney Conservation Alliance, Wianamatta Regional Park holds its significance as the last wild emu habitat in Sydney.

Cr Crameri said the park needs internal fencing to separate housing from the nature reserve to preserve these emus and kangaroos, and keep homes and families safe from fire.

“If they don’t do it then you have the cats and dogs coming in and ruining the flora and fauna then we can’t have the kangaroos and emus,” he said.

“The other point is that it hasn’t been burnt in 70 years, and it’s been so long because kids haven’t been allowed in during school holidays.

“Over at Shanes Park, every school holidays you get kids in and that’s when we get fires, we will have the same problem here.”

Cr Crameri said when Jackie Kelly was in Federal Parliament, she obtained the money to make sure the park in Wianamatta would continue to be fenced.

“It’s already fenced on the outside because it was part of the Australian Defence Industries site, but they’ve got to do the internal fencing around the housing that will be put in it,” he said.

With this, the State Government proposed that it may be elevated to the status of a Nature Reserve with careful management.

ederal Minister for the Environment, Greg Hunt, visited Penrith’s Green Army last week, to greet the team that will preserve the critically endangered Cumberland Conservation Corridor.

The Green Army initiative is part of the Federal Government’s $15 million commitment to preserving the biodiversity in western Sydney, and $2.5 million of that will go to supporting 15 teams to work on local projects.

important work they are doing for their local environment, but also how it will benefit their own personal development.

“The Green Army Project once helped a lady with anxiety get out and get back into the community,” he said.

“She was then employed in landscape and eco-tourism, and was really proud at what she had achieved with the Green Army in just six months.”

When asked, one male participant from St Clair said he joined up for the experience, and hopes to find work after it.

“I really enjoy watching a lot of environment shows and hopefully I’ll get a landscaping job after it,” he said.

Karen is tops: Much-loved Nepean Hospital midwife earns special praise Karen Topping wins both state and national recognition for her work with new mothers JADE ALIPRANDI

ot only did midwife Karen Topping receive the State award for Midwife of the Year but she also received the National award for her excellence in midwifery in 2014.

With a presentation held on International Day of the Midwife this week at Nepean Hospital, Ms Topping received both her Midwife of the Year awards and said she felt it was for all her fellow midwives and her colleagues.

“I feel very honoured and very privileged but I really am just one of many midwives who deserve this award,” she said in her acceptance speech.

“I hope this award can be considered as a reflection of the midwives at this hospital.”

Johnson and Johnson National Sales Manager, Kacey Meddings presented Ms Topping with a plaque and a $500 educational voucher.

“I would like to congratulate everyone here on their career choice,” Ms Meddings said in her presentation.

“Thank you all for the contribution you make in your line of work.”

The midwives at Nepean Hospital were then given a morning tea to help celebrate with Ms Topping.

Ms Topping said of her 25 years as a midwife she enjoys the experience she has with each new mother.

“Being around for the whole experience, from pregnancy through to the birth is amazing,” she said.

The mother who nominated Ms Topping for the award, a young Irish woman, Bridget Byrne, said she was thankful to have had a great midwife.

“The system is different here and it was scary not knowing what to do,” she said.

“I wasn’t used to midwifery but Karen took me on as she was available around the time my baby, Callun, was due to arrive.

“She was the only one I dealt with and

she was always available for me and said I could text her if I had questions – she was just really good.”

Nepean Hospital was also gifted with a $500 educational voucher to spend on educational books or tools.

According to the latest Roy Morgan Image of Professions Survey, Australians aged 14 and over consider nursing to be the most highly regarded occupation, up one per cent from the previous year’s poll.

Aged Care nurse at Nepean Hospital, Nicole Hill said honest, ethics and professionalism are all part of the job.

“I wasn’t surprised by the results of the survey,” she said.

Having been a nurse for almost 25 years, Ms Hill said nursing is a team effort.

“There’s a lot of comradeship – you have to work as a team because you can’t do it all on your own,” she said.

General Secretary of the NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association, Brett Holmes, welcomed the acknowledgement of nurses and midwives in this survey.

“Nurses and midwives are often intertwined into some of the most intimate moments in a patient’s life and as a result take their ethical and professional responsibilities very seriously,” he said.

Ms Hill simply loves her job.

“Nursing is a passion of mine and has given me some good times as well as some very hard times too,” she said.

Rural rates questioned Rural residents have raised concerns over Council rates amid the public exhibition of Council’s four year Delivery Program.

The revised Delivery Program outlines the rates and charges residents will pay for services such as storm water and waste management, and is now available for public comment.

In a Council meeting last week, Councillors highlighted concerns with the report’s content that outlined the higher fees and charges for those living in rural areas.

Llandilo resident Ray Madden has owned his property for 40 years, and said rates in town are already around a third of what rural residents pay, and it isn’t fair.

“We pay three times the in town rate and all we get is a garbage service,” he said.

Tony Jeglic has lived in Llandilo for 30 years, and said the rate differences between rural and suburban areas is out of proportion.

“It makes no sense to me because the service provided by Council is actually less,” he said.

“We have no sewerage, we have septic tanks. We have to deal with our own waste water and own storm water, and that all has to be managed on site and we are responsible for the cost.”

COUNCIL SNAPSHOT Oculus Landscape Architecture has been awarded the designer role of turning Queen Street, St Marys into a hub of social activity. Penrith City Council’s Streetscape Improvement Plan for Queen Street aims to add a series of “special places” along the main strip, to enhance the attractiveness of the street and give it its own character. Oculus Landscape Architecture’s tender application was determined most advantageous by a Tender Advisory Group, based on project methodologies, personnel and engagement process in addition to cost. The company quoted the overhaul of the street to cost $155,380 excluding GST, and will undertake creative-related public domain projects for the next three years.

Penrith City Council has accepted over $600,000 in grants from the State Government to undertake flood and floodplain risk management studies. Council initially applied for six grants, was offered funding for four of them, but only accepted three. $250,000 will now go towards a South Creek Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan, $220,267 towards College, Orth and Werrington Creek Catchments Overland Flood Study and $148,001 for the Little Creek Catchment Overland Flood Study.

Council didn’t accept funding for the Peachtree and Lower Surveyors Creek Catchments Overland Flood Study as Council needs to match the funds to cover the cost of the projects, and at this time could only match three.

Council has already reapplied for grants for the two projects it did not initially get offered, and will now send thanks to the Government for their continued support and funding for flood management in the Penrith LGA. Penrith City Council has nominated Councillors Michelle Tormey, Jackie Greenow and Karen Mckeown to attend this year’s Making Cities Liveable Conference in Melbourne on July 6 and 7. Penrith City Council’s Senior Sustainability Planner, Jenny Guice has also been selected to speak at the event on Penrith Council’s investigation into urban heat, as part of their Cooling the City strategy. The conference is themed ‘Liveable Cities for the Future’ and will look at population increase demands, housing, transport and mobility, job disbursement, resource management, public health and an ageing population. Other speakers at the conference include the Mayor of the City of Melbourne and a Director from the United Nations Global Compact Cities Programme.

he Nepean River is three steps closer to its long-awaited transformation.

Penrith City Council has now been awarded $187,500 to upgrade three sections of the Nepean River, as part of Council’s detailed design and construction for the Great River Walk.

Councillor Mark Davies said he is pleased the river project is continually receiving funding since the start of the overarching Our River Masterplan in 2013.

“When I was Mayor the major push was for the Our River Masterplan because we didn’t have one,” he said.

“That’s a big body of work and that’s something that will be outworked over the next 20 to 30 years because it’s so comprehensive.”

He said the Our River Masterplan is a very powerful tool in attracting investment and capturing smaller levels of funding for smaller projects.

“These [smaller projects] are going to pop up from time to time... [and] the Masterplan is a tool to be used in the process,” he said.

As a condition of the grant, the work is required to be completed within two years, and funding needs to be matched

by Council to reach the total cost of

A portion of the funding will go towards planning the Regatta Park precinct on the western side, taking $60,000 of the grant.

Council applied for the grant from the NSW Department of Planning’s Metropolitan Greenspace Program last year, and will now send thanks to the department for being awarded the funding.

head of National Volunteer week, May 11 to 17, the team from the Learning Lounge at St Clair Youth Centre are calling out for volunteers for their homework program.

Over six million people volunteer in Australia alone, with the main types of organisations including sport and physical recreation, community and welfare, religious groups and parenting, children and youth.

Having run since 2005, the homework program is held on Tuesday afternoons during the school term and offers help to students, both primary and secondary, who may struggle with their homework and assignments.

Learning Lounge coordinator, Frances Zammit, said she finds it very rewarding.

A

“I often have parents come to me and say their child has improved with their grades – that’s just a really rewarding thing to hear,” she said.

Having worked in the Learning Lounge for three years, Ms Zammit helps fill student spots each term, provides support for the other tutors and engages with the students.

“It’s a really relaxed environment where the kids just enjoy being around each other but while they learn at the same time,” she said.

Students attend one of three sessions each Tuesday afternoon.

Secondary students are at the Learning Lounge from 3.15pm to 4.15pm with Primary students given two sessions, 4.30pm to 5.15pm and 5.15pm to 6pm.

There is a limit of six students in the secondary program and eight students in each session in the primary program.

“The tutor can have the choice of helping out on any of the sessions or all of the sessions – it’s completely based upon what they are available for,” Ms Zammit said.

“If they’re a retired teacher or a current teacher, or someone who has strong knowledge in most areas of the curriculum, they would help benefit the kids at the centre.”

Volunteers must have a working with children check to ensure safety of the students.

“You have the title the whole year and in that time you would do stuff depending on what’s on. I got to go to the St Marys Festival and I sat with the Mayor, it was lots of fun and I was really proud.”

The real Penrith Mayor, Ross Fowler said the unique competition provides the opportunity for students to learn the important role Council has in its local community.

“We’re giving one lucky student the chance to be Junior Mayor and 14 others the chance to be Junior Councillors,” he said.

The competition has a bicentenary theme and entrants are required to indicate what they think Penrith City will be like in another 200 years from now.

Entries this year can be in a range of formats, from an A4 piece of paper to an audio-visual file, and can be a poem, a story, a comic strip or even an artwork.

New local film is Bound to be made Up and coming Penrith filmmaker hopes fellow locals will help fund his new movie NATHAN TAYLOR

ward-winning Penrith filmmaker Travis Earl is seeking out passionate locals who wish to assist him on his adventurous crusade to make his next film.

The 31-year-old independent film writer and director recently launched a crowdfunding campaign to help make his next feature film, titled ‘Bound’.

The dramatic thriller is about a group of vengeful men who attempt to dish out some vigilante justice against a young a man who had nearly killed one of their friends in an alcohol fuelled attack.

The group carries out a kidnapping on the main culprit to scare him but as the mission goes awry they are forced to make hard decisions and they begin to reveal their true selves and face their true motivations that have been misdirected at their victim.

‘Bound’ is expected to star some of Australia’s best actors as well as some up and coming local talent. Well known identities already attached to the project include comedian Garry Who (‘Fat Pizza’, ‘Housos’) and Panthers ground announcer and part-time actor Scott McRae.

Mr Earl’s Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign target to make ‘Bound’ is currently set at $60,000.

“Anybody can donate whatever they want, every little bit helps,” Mr Earl said.

“I would really like to appeal to businesses and individuals who have a lot of money. It’s tax deductible and I’m more than happy to promote the business on the website, in the credits or via product placement.

“Anyone that puts money into the project will receive a perk, like being an extra in the movie or spending time on set.”

Mr Earl added that even if the crowdfunding campaign doesn’t reach its wealthy target, the movie will still be made.

“Everyone that’s read the script has said this is a movie that must be made right now because it is so topical, timely and relevant to today,” he said.

His ultimate goal is for ‘Bound’ to be screened at major film festivals as well as receive a theatrical release and DVD distribution.

tep up and support the community at WestCare’s ‘Steps of Hope’ charity walk this month.

The Nepean River’s Tench Reserve will come alive on Saturday, May 23 with friends and families walking together to raise money and support locals in need.

Andrew Paech, WestCare Community Service’s Assistant Director said the event is not only fun for all ages, but has a direct impact on the immediate community.

“What’s exciting is it’s something that people of all ages, young and old, can get involved in and have fun for a great cause that makes a real difference to the most vulnerable people in Penrith,” he said.

“At WestCare, our whole focus is the Penrith LGA, and all proceeds go straight to the core of what we do – straight back into the Penrith community.”

All proceeds of the walk will go towards WestCare’s key functions such as its Emergency Relief Service, Community Connection Van and Correctional Care.

In the last 12 months, WestCare has provided fresh and frozen food to over 5500 vulnerable people in Penrith, provided over 3000 items of clothing and contributed to over 700 phone, water and electricity bills.

This year’s walk will begin from 7.30am and finish around 2.30pm, but walkers have the choice to complete one, two or three circuits of the 7km walk.

“That doesn’t mean you have to walk that whole time,” Mr Paech assured.

“We are definitely encouraging kids and families to come along. There will also be a jumping castle and BBQ among many other fun activities.”

oinciding with Domestic Violence Prevention Month, a series of short plays will be held between May 16 and 24 that emotionally reveal the importance of domestic violence awareness.

Titled ‘Rhymes With Silence’, the 13 plays have been written by nine Australian writers and will star 26 actors with each piece connected in some way to create one narrative through a common thread of design and theme.

Kingswood actress, Dede Attipoe, will be performing in ‘Devine Devotion’ that has three multicultural women who go through the unfortunate transition of domestic violence.

“It’s a very emotionally charged piece as you can imagine,” Dede said.

“I never really thought about domestic violence before because I haven’t been through it myself but somehow I have been able to relate to the character really well.”

Dede is currently a full-time university student and just finished a two-month course at New Faces Talent Academy (NFTA).

Having worked on the play for about a month now, Dede said she has enjoyed developing her acting skills.

“The best thing I learnt at NFTA was character development which I have really been able to put into this emotional role that is something I haven’t experienced in real life before,” she said.

At 22, Dede has been in a number of commercials, namely a GE Money American advertisement.

HISTORY

Gallery has an amazing history

in 1955. In 1962, Mr Ancher was again commissioned by Mrs Lewers to create a house on the land for Margo Lewers’ mother, who unfortunately died as the house was being completed.

Later known as the ‘Ancher House’, it became an artistic and creative collaboration between Mrs Lewers and Mr Ancher showcasing their design and art skills.

Extensions to the house, including the living room upgrade in 1955 and the Ancher House in 1962, provided opportunity to break down barriers between the man-made and natural environment by creating areas that flowed naturally into their garden surroundings.

In 1980 after both Gerald’s and Margo’s deaths, in 1962 and in 1978, the Lewers daughters, Darani and Tanya donated the site along with the buildings and the gardens to Penrith City Council on the condition that the organisation who took on the property was willing to operate it as a memorial gallery or other public art facility to honour their parents.

A collection of art created by Gerald and Margo was also donated with some 280 paintings, drawings, sculptures, plastics, textiles and ceramics included in the collection.

Just one year later, the Gallery was launched in August of 1981 with New South Wales Premier Neville Wran saying: “Gerald and Margo Lewers’ contribution to Australian art was of signal importance along with their energies and those of their contemporaries that set new directions for the visual arts in our country”.

There are now three separate display areas including the Lewers House, the Ancher House and The Regional Gallery.

The Gallery was designed and built to join the Lewers and Ancher houses together by creating a central courtyard.

The Lewers’ garage was converted into an entrance, bookshop and office.

Through Margo and Gerry’s passion for the arts, the property has a distinctive quality of beauty and tranquillity, enriched by the semi rural river setting.

Now the Gallery is used to present exhibitions, education and workshop programs and special events of excellence, ambition and integrity, all to help honour the Lewers’ contribution and bequest.

The Gallery is considered unique in nature with its artistic and architectural heritage, galleries, gardens and collections or exhibitions that are held there.

hat started out as a rundown property on the banks of the Nepean River is now a recognised gallery housing some well-known exhibitors in the Penrith area.

The Lewers Bequest and The Penrith Regional Gallery has a rich artistic history that has contributed towards the Gallery that it is today.

Margo and Gerald Lewers bought the property in 1942 to use as a summer home and a holiday house.

Gerald was able to retire in 1950 from the family business to become a full-time sculptor while Margo was able to explore other avenues in her artistic career.

The Gallery became their permanent residence as they made the move to Emu Plains.

Using their artistic skills and mind-set, they renovated the house.

“We have customers coming from Parramatta through to Emu Plains, we even have dogs coming from the Hills district and a regular from the snowy mountains,” Milica said.

“We have built a business that we would take our own dog to if we were not doing this.”

ost women in business are high achievers – or over achievers depending on how you want to frame it! Frankly, if you don’t fall into this definition, then you’re unlikely to be in business long term. So it’s a good thing, right? That internal motivation that drives you to build something or that determination to see an idea take fruit and succeed: they are positive traits to have and not to be taken for granted. Your business would not be where it is today without that.

That same drive and determination can also mean that you involve yourself in many activities.

You are more likely to be the person that is asked to coordinate or kick start something, because people have learnt that you are someone who ‘gets things done’. And you enjoy doing those things!

I recently took stock of how many ‘hats’ I was wearing.

Over the past few years I had gradually added different responsibilities and tasks to my non-business time. In addition, I was juggling two very different

companies and trying to put in 100 per cent effort and commitment to both. All of the areas I was involved in were not ‘chores’ – I had gladly volunteered and committed to undertake them.

Most high achievers are also perfectionists! So I was becoming quite unhappy and stressed when I wasn’t able to complete tasks to the standard I know I am capable of. And the many late nights I found myself working on both business and non-business activities were having a detrimental effect on all areas of my life.

I made the decision to start reducing the number of commitments I had, and started to say ‘no’ to new offers, despite how tempting and enjoyable they could have been!

This quote from Barbara de Angelis is pertinent: “Women need real moments of solitude and self-reflection to balance out how much of ourselves we give away”. If all our time is spent ‘doing’, the balance in our lives will shift, and we will end up burnt out. Take stock, work out your priorities and take action to bring more balance and a healthy business (and personal) life.

Being accountable for your own life and business is the reason most people start a business Fuel your life with positive energy: Your attitude, mindset, belief, and optimism have a big impact on your life. The saying “if you can believe it, the mind can achieve it” applies here.

Lead with optimism: Optimism is one of the defining factors of success. Optimistic leaders are able to get their people heading in the right direction and create success.

Surround yourself with positive people: Stress, business and fear are the main enemies of positive energy. Surround yourself with the right people and you will find you achieve more.

Stop complaining without solutions: Complaining is like vomiting. Afterwards you feel better, but people around you feel sick. Ultimately, complaining is counterproductive and hurts your company. If you point out a problem then work to finding a solution.

uch mystery surrounds the make-up of the Penrith team that will take the field tonight against the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium.

Ivan Cleary named his side as required on Tuesday but at that stage, not even he knew who would be right to play against the competition leaders and who wouldn’t be.

There’s every chance that Penrith will welcome back five-eighth and star playmaker Jamie Soward, who reportedly trained at full strength during the week.

Rumours suggested his halves partner Peter Wallace could also make a return but it’s understood he won’t be back until the May 29 clash with Parramatta.

It’s hoped that the experienced Dean Whare is back in the centres, while Elijah Taylor may be right to play tonight.

There’s also some doubt over dynamic fullback Matt Moylan who suffered a hand injury while playing for City last weekend – he has been in doubt all week. James Segeyaro? He’s a chance of playing, too.

Then again, maybe he won’t. Confused?

On the flip side, Brisbane have also had a somewhat disrupted preparation with Darius Boyd fighting the clock to be right for this one, while Sam Thaiday will be missing after copping a one week ban following an incident in last weekend’s Test match.

The bottom line? Nobody really knows what’s going on right now.

Meanwhile, the disruption of the representative weekend is quite obvious.

It’s hardly a week off – Penrith had some 17 players away from regular duties and there’s no doubt Ivan Cleary would have been keen to get his side back together on Monday or Tuesday of this week.

The Panthers not only had so many players away from camp, but by the time those players got back to Penrith on Monday or Tuesday, Cleary had very little time to prepare his troops ahead of the flight

Penrith are without doubt on the back foot for this one – still injury ravaged, with more players in doubt, and forced into what is essentially the equivalent of a short turnaround.

Throw in the travel to Brisbane, and things are without doubt looking a little bit shaky.

But it is Cleary’s job to manage that situation and if he’s proven anything in the last two years, it’s that he can get his side clicking even in the most challenging of circumstances.

No matter who does and doesn’t play tonight, it would seem that the Panthers are through the worst of their injury crisis.

Only Jamal Idris won’t return this year and over the next six weeks or so there will be a procession of returning players – Soward, Wallace, Taylor, Segeyaro, Whare, Brent Kite and Josh Mansour heading the list.

Barring any further serious injuries, Penrith will be fielding a near full-strength side by the time the mid-way point of the season comes around.

With so much mystery surrounding the team line-ups – and your writer forced to pen this preview on Wednesday – the best I can offer is this: If Penrith play with the same attitude they took into the game against Cronulla, they are every chance of pulling off an upset victory.

If they slip, even slightly, the Broncos can rack up points very, very quickly.

Players like Lewis Brown, Tyrone Peachey and Bryce Cartwright really need to shine in this one.

Dream ride for young RCG He’s essentially a noname in the NRL, but it won’t be long before rugby league fans know all about the talents of rising star Reagan Campbell-Gillard

oom Panthers prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard is hoping to use his recent City Origin experience to Penrith’s advantage when they tackle the in-form Broncos tonight in Brisbane.

Campbell-Gillard was a surprise selection in Brad Fittler’s City team, having only played eight games of first grade since the start of the year.

Speaking with Extra Time on Tuesday, the 21-year-old said he was lost for words over his City selection.

“I’m still shocked to be honest, it was a great experience to be in the team and I can’t really explain it,” he said.

The likeable young Panther was one of five selected in Fittler’s team along with Matt Moylan, Tyrone Peachey, Waqa Blake and Bryce Cartwright (18th man).

The side also featured a number of ex-Panthers including James Roberts, Wade Graham and Blake Austin.

“I definitely felt comfortable in camp, there was a huge Penrith connection in that team and I felt comfortable around the boys,” he said.

Campbell-Gillard now hopes to put his City Origin experience to the test on Friday night when he tackles the top of the table Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium.

“I want to improve my game, I want to improve this week and hopefully I can use

that experience against the Broncos this Friday,” he said.

“I’m certainly getting used to first grade now and feeling a bit more comfortable around the boys.”

The rookie added that he couldn’t wait to play in Brisbane’s famed ‘Cauldron’.

“A Friday night game is always massive up there and I know the boys are refreshed after having the weekend off. It should be a really good game,” he said.

ne of the most important periods of a rugby league season is the middle third of the year.

Of the teams in the competition who I thought would have been in a better position as we enter Round 9 of the season the Sea Eagles and the Roosters spring to mind.

Manly are struggling at the bottom of the ladder, a place they are not familiar with.

They are confronted with winning 10 of 14 games with two byes to make the eight.

The Roosters, with three wins from eight are coming to a period in the season where they potentially will lose their top line players to State of Origin duties.

Trent Robinson will be seething at the poor start to the season; as a result they probably won’t be able to lose a game in rounds 18-26 to be assured a top eight spot.

On the other side you have Brisbane and Melbourne who find themselves at the top of the table and have some breathing space coming into the toughest six weeks of the season.

Clubs lose their best players throughout the State of Origin series.

The players involved return to clubs following the hardest games of their lives.

To mentally get back up for another brutal game on the weekend is hard and takes its toll on the individual and the team.

If I had a crystal ball I would say that the Gold Coast Titans and Wests Tigers will struggle to maintain their position in the eight with the Roosters and Bulldogs to have strong finishes to the year.

Learning curve for Bryce Recovering from injury, being dropped to the NSW Cup and getting called into the City squad – it’s been a busy start to the year for Bryce Cartwright

A

s 18th man, Bryce Cartwright may not have taken the field in the City vs Country match in Wagga Wagga last week but he’s praised the concept despite constant criticism from league fans and commentators.

Since its inception in 1987, many league experts and fans have called the annual City vs Country fixture a waste of time despite it always being billed as a genuine Origin trial for the NSW Blues.

But 20-year-old Cartwright disagrees with the critics and believes City vs Country should remain a permanent fixture on the NRL calendar.

“I think the game is a great stepping stone for Origin and it’s great for fans to see quality young players coming through,” Cartwright told Extra Time.

“Both the Country and City teams get a lot out of it and everyone loves it. I think it should definitely stay because everyone really enjoys it.

“Training with those quality blokes and having Freddy Fittler coaching, I learnt a lot. It was a great experience to be around those types of people.”

Bryce Cartwright in action against Cronulla last month It’s been an interesting season for Cartwright thus far, who’s had a roller coaster start to the year since coming back from ankle surgery.

Before Penrith’s game against the Sea Eagles in mid-April, Cartwright was surprisingly dropped from Ivan Cleary’s 17-man squad following several disappointing performances. For the first time, the 2014 Panthers Rookie of the Year has revealed what that moment was like.

“It was pretty tough getting dropped but Ivan wanted me to go back and work on a few things and I got another chance last week and the week before,” he said.

“It hurt getting dropped back [to NSW Cup] but I learnt what I needed to do and I think I did it. Hopefully I can play some consistent footy and stay in the team.”

Cartwright has been named in the side to play Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium this evening.

T IS TIM SHEENS REALLY TO BLAME?

wo weeks ago in this column I wrote that Tim Sheens was facing a huge dilemma over the next 12 months that could force him to give the dreaded tap on the shoulder to a few ageing Kangaroos.

Well, since then, look what has happened!

Yes the Kiwis completely ambushed the once unbeatable Aussies with enthusiasm and passion to comfortably win the ANZAC Test last Sunday in Brisbane.

Who saw that coming?

After all Origin is just around the corner and we are almost nine rounds into the NRL competition so surely the Aussies would be ready to fire right?

Apparently not.

But why not?

Has the age factor already bitten?

Now there are plenty of critics calling for coach Tim Sheens to be shown the door.

But, hang on a minute, wasn’t it Sheens himself who warned us about this ageing roster?

The Aussie coach it would seem feared this might happen and no doubt would have loved to introduce some enthusiastic new talent to develop into the green and gold for a Four Nations next year and a World Cup the year after.

But sadly Sheens’ contract is year to year and so he is somewhat hamstrung in forward planning, he can really only concentrate on one Test at a time and must also show a degree of loyalty to the players who have performed so well in the past.

The real trouble is he was badly let down

Luke Lewis is among the veterans who could be on the way out by those senior players this time who were, by their own admission, out enthused by the younger Kiwis.

The great Andrew Johns has said he fears this Kiwi team may be hard to beat for the next six or seven years at least.

So Craig Bellamy and Laurie Daley are two names that have been tossed up to

replace Sheens next year but surely both will face exactly the same dilemma as Sheens of having to freshen up a tired old squad.

Seems to me it’s not Sheens that is the problem but if given a chance he might just have the solution.

TOP OF THE TABLE BATTLE AS PANTHERS LOOK TO TAKE A SHARE OF THE COMPETITION LEAD The biggest Holden Cup match up of the year will take place tonight when the first placed Brisbane Broncos take on the second placed Penrith Panthers at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

The Panthers sit just two points behind the Broncos on the Holden Cup premiership ladder with two losses to their name as opposed to Brisbane’s one.

If Penrith do manage to knock off the Broncos they’ll share the Holden Cup lead, with the Queenslanders just ahead due to a better for and against.

Under the guidance of coaches Cameron Ciraldo and Kevin Kingston, the Panthers are enjoying their best season since winning the premiership back in 2013, and are currently on a four game winning streak.

Brisbane are also on a four game winning streak with their lone loss of the season coming against the New Zealand Warriors back in Round 4.

After missing the finals by the skin of their teeth last year, the Panthers began 2015 with a huge 30-12 win over the Canterbury Bulldogs.

In Round 2, Penrith weren’t good enough to overcome the Gold Coast Titans in Bathurst, losing 36-26.

In Round 3, during Monday night foot-

ball against the Sydney Roosters, Penrith managed to bounce back into form with 28-18 victory.

Penrith continued their rollercoaster start to the year in Round 4 when they were walloped by Newcastle 34-8.

However, they managed to bounce back against the highly fancied North Queensland Cowboys a week later 32-22.

Penrith came up against another strong side in Manly in Round 6, smashing them 36-16 before a rematch against the Titans saw the Panthers run out 36-24 winners.

Before the NRL’s Representative Round last weekend, the Panthers defeated the bottom-placed Cronulla Sharks in Round 8 34-4.

Despite the competition only being two months old, Penrith have already unearthed some exciting new talent including wingers Manu Enise and Maliko Filino, halfback Soni Luke and hooker Tyrone May. Last weekend backrower James FisherHarris represented the Junior Kiwis and prop Stanton Albert represented the PNG Kumuls.

The Panthers take on the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium this afternoon at 5.15pm. Updates will be available via the Weekender Facebook page.

BATTLE OF THE WEST LOOMS FOR WELL RESTED PANTHERS FOLLOWING REP WEEKEND The Panthers having had the week off due to the representative round, are set to resume their defence of the NSW Cup when they travel down the M4 this Sunday to take on nearest rivals, Wentworthville Magpies, at Ringrose Park.

For the majority of the squad the weekend is a chance to recharge the batteries after what has been a frantic start to the season with the Panthers currently in 2nd position having won six, lost two including winning their last four games on the trot, to trail league leaders Mounties by just two competition points.

There were some players / staff from the NSW Cup team who were rewarded for their efforts thus far in 2015, with all but one player, getting through their representative commitments without incident.

Ben Murdoch-Masila, having not long returned from a knee injury, will now be sidelined with a high ankle strain for four to five weeks but was cleared of any lower leg fractures after Tonga’s narrow 18-16 loss to Samoa.

In other highlights, a first half Robert Jennings try, helped the Junior Kangaroos prevail over the Junior Kiwis, 22-20, that featured hooker Sione Katoa, while Wellington Albert impressed PNG coach, Mal Meninga despite the Kumuls losing 22-10

to Fiji. Finally a late rally from the Garth Brennan-coached NSW Cup Representative side that featured Sam Anderson and Leilani Latu, was not enough to stop the Queensland Residents from claiming a 36-32 win despite both sides scoring six tries apiece.

The Panthers now turn their attention to this Sunday’s clash with the eleventhplaced Wentworthville Magpies, who after their top four finish in 2014, have struggled so far in season 2015. This nonetheless represents a danger game for Penrith given the strength of their side particularly in the backs with the likes of Adam Quinlan, Val Toutai, John Folau, Bureta Faraimo, Beau Henry and Luke Kelly all named to play.

In team news, Penrith have allowed Robert Jennings and Sione Katoa to bolster the Holden Cup squad ahead of a 1v2 clash with the Brisbane Broncos which sees Paul Simona promoted to the centres with Nu’u Akeripa shifting to the wing while Tom Eisenhuth moves to fullback to replace Jennings.

Tupou Sopoaga will move to fiveeighth, while Ben Murdoch-Masila’s injury will see Brendan Attwood and Pat Hollis starting in the back row. Sam Hollis will start from a five-man bench.

C

ountry music star Jasmine Rae puts her heart and soul into her music.

After writing candidly about the passing of her father on her 2013 release ‘If I Want To’ the talented singer/ songwriter was aiming to be just as open on her new release ‘Heartbeat’.

“This album felt like a little bit of a continuation from my last record,” she said.

“A lot of the songs were very personal and from a very raw kind of place.

“I really wrote these things out as if it was therapy and people were really supportive about that. So I wanted to continue just being so super honest even if it was painful to be.”

For this release Jasmine spent part of her time writing alone and the rest of it writing with Australian co-writers as well as collaborating with hit makers in Nashville.

The end result was enough songs for several albums.

“I write about 45 songs before I actually choose and then I get to choose what songs don’t make it on and which songs do,” she said.

“That’s the hardest part because I’ve poured my heart into every single one of them.”

During the process of creating ‘Heartbeat’, Jasmine spent 17 days in Nashville working on the album with Grammy Award winning producer Luke Wooten.

The American city is synonymous with music, attracting artists and fans from every corner of the globe.

“It’s like a music festival all the time,” Jasmine said.

“There’s always something going on.

Everyone you’re talking to is making their own album even when it’s just someone who’s pouring your coffee at the cafe, they’re also a musician.

“It’s not just country music too, it’s a whole bunch of different genres because the recording studios in Nashville are so state of the art and there are so many musicians there that are just the best in the world.

“Everyone there is just so talented and so energetic and excited so you can’t help but be inspired when you’re there.”

Jasmine is once again preparing to head off on tour but this time around will be the country music star’s first national headlining tour. As part of the tour Jasmine will be heading to Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, May 16 to give local audiences a taste of the new album.

“I’m so excited,” she said.

“Especially performing these songs live because these songs mean so much to me.”

Though Jasmine grew up in the suburbs of Melbourne and was exposed to a range of different music, it was the country genre where she found a strong connection.

“When my parents put on a Dolly Parton record when I was about eight, I think it was the lyrics,” she said “I’ve always loved lyrics and poetry and reading and things like that so the fact that I was able to be told a whole story and be taken somewhere emotionally in three minutes and five seconds, I just thought that was incredible.”

Things have certainly changed for the genre in recent years. Country music has gained traction with a younger crowd due to cross over artists who have brought pop tinged country music into the mainstream.

“There was no one in my class that liked country music,” Jasmine said of her childhood.

“Whereas now I notice there are younger people who are listening to Keith Urban and Taylor Swift and they get into it that

way. That’s kind of exciting to know that there’s some younger people getting into the genre and younger musicians are interested in playing it.”

PENRITH RSL COMMITS TO THE HOMELESS VETERANS SUPPORT & ACCOMMODATION PROGRAM For years, our service personnel have returned home from overseas conflicts suffering a range of stress-related and mental health issues as a direct result of the impact of war: Ŕ WWI: it was called “Shell shock”: Ŕ WWII: it was called Combat stress reaction (CSR), Also known as “combat fatigue“; Ŕ Since late 1970’s, now known as Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. In many cases, PTSD can lead to severe depression, where the person is incapable of taking rational steps to gain help & treatment; this often leads to addictive drug & alcohol dependency, anger & violence, criminal behavior; homelessness; incarceration and sadly suicide.

In March 2014, RSL Life Care, working with returned Afghan Vet, Geoff Evans, acted to address the most severe instances of vets from contemporary conflicts, living on the streets, with severe depression & drug dependency.

The goal of the campaign is to establish a second facility in western Sydney, with physical

accommodation facilities provided by RSL Life Care; Ŕ To raise $1 million over next three years to fund the operational expenses of the Homeless Veterans Program at this new centre servicing western Sydney; Ŕ To provide this model to other states to adopt to address the homeless vet needs in their areas; Ŕ To expand the target to other areas of NSW where need exists and seek funding from clubs and sub-branches in those regions.

he much loved Rodgers and Hammerstein classic ‘Oklahoma!’ will be coming to the Richmond School of Arts this May. The beautiful heritage listed building will play host to the Richmond Players as they take on this story of two young couples who are on a (not so smooth) road to love during the turn of the 20th century when a rivalry raged between cowboys and farmers.

‘Oklahoma!’ features a host of well known show tunes including farm girl Ado Annie’s ‘I Can’t Say No’, show opener ‘Oh, What a Beautiful Morning’ and of course everyone’s favourite, the roof raising title track ‘Oklahoma!’.

This was the first collaboration between Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II and is regarded as the first modern musical where music and lyrics were an integral part of the plot.

The show will be brought to life by a cast and crew from across the local region including Lauren Cole of Richmond (pictured) and Martin Crew of North Richmond (pictured) in the roles of Ado Annie and Will Parker.

It’s a must-see production and tickets are selling fast.

CINEMA Inherent Vice

Rated MA // STEPHEN BISSET If ever there was a director that could possibly tackle enigmatic author Thomas Pynchon’s sprawling psychedelic and almost unfilmable noir ‘Inherent Vice’ it would have to be idiosyncratic auteur Paul Thomas Anderson (‘There Will Be Bloods’, ‘Magnolia’, ‘Boogie Nights’). Here, Anderson has given us a classic American noir – albeit more in the form of the Cohen Brothers’ ‘Big Lebowski’ and any hard-boiled Elmore Leonard or Raymond Carver fare.

Set at the tail-end of the Love Generation in late 1960s LA, ‘Inherent Vice’ tells the story of hippie stoner detective Larry ‘Doc’ Sportello who is approached by ex-flame Shasta Hepworth (Katherine Waterston) to help solve the disappearance of her

shady real estate mogul boyfriend (Eric Roberts). In typical noir fashion, things quickly spiral out of control and Sportello finds himself wading through a mire of Nazi bikers, FBI agents, weird dentists and drug lords. Trying too hard to work out the intricacies in this meandering plot could potentially be a fools’ errand. Featuring a stellar ensemble cast including Josh Brolin (who gives one of his best-ever performances as Lt. Det. Christian F. “Bigfoot” Bjornsen), Eric Roberts, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio del Toro and Martin Short, much of this film’s success is due to Joaquin Phoenix’s turn as the drug-addled Private Dick.

‘Penguins of Madagascar’ is a spin-off from the hugely successful Madagascar film franchise. The flick follows the penguin spy team of Skipper, Rico, Kowalski and Private as they battle it out with the octopus villain Dr. Octavius Brine (John Malkovich), who also goes by the much more common name of Dave. The penguins are assisted on their mission by undercover organisation The North Wind, which is led by a charismatic wolf known only as Classified. Fans of the franchise will probably enjoy this flick, although it doesn’t quite have the same broad appeal of the original Madagascar films.

The Riley Street dining precinct has welcomed another new restaurant and this time it’s bringing Cuban flavours to Penrith.

Coco Cubano offers diners the opportunity to indulge in delicious Cuban cuisine while bringing a taste of the country’s culture to its inviting setting which includes lounges to relax in, Cuban themed art and lively music.

My dining partner and I started off our meal with the signature Plantain chips, similar to a banana but savoury rather than sweet, served with guacamole, sour cream and paprika.

The chips were a nice twist on the traditional potato chip and tasted delicious when mixed with the guacamole and sour cream.

For mains I had a must try dish, The Cubano Club Meal, a toasted sourdough sandwich with a generous helping of pulled pork, bacon, pickles and mustard, finished off with melted cheese on top and an accompaniment of sweet potato wedges with chilli aioli. The pork was melt in your mouth tender and the pickles and mustard gave it a nice kick.

My dining partner has a few food intolerances which were catered for with the

delicious chicken and mushroom salad.

The menu offers plenty of gluten free and vegetarian meal options for diners, and meals can be customised if required.

Whether you’re after a meal, or just a place to spend a few hours having drinks with friends, Coco Cubano is worth a visit.

auvignon Blanc is today one of the world’s mostwidely planted white wine grape varieties, with over 121,000ha (300,000 acres) estimated to be under cultivation around the globe.

Originating in the Bordeaux region of France, it still flourishes there as well as now-other parts of that country, plus Italy, Spain, Romania and Moldova, and further afield Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Chile and South Africa.

A rewarding local example is Calabria Family Wines’ Richland Sauvignon Blanc from the NSW Riverina, the 2014 a lovely fruity and full-bodied drop in which maker Bill Calabria has coaxed to the forefront its wonderful varietal tropical fruit flavours of passionfruit, lime and mango.

At just $12 it’s a great white on warmer days to simply enjoy on its own, makes a perfect match with seafood platters that include prawns, crabs and lobsters, or as Bill Calabria himself enjoys, with Asian stir fries featuring lemon grass, coriander, tomato, onions and a touch of garlic.

One to note: Katnook in South Australia’s Coonawarra launched their Founder’s Block range in 2005, and in the decade since it’s become their biggest selling wine – a justreleased 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon a further great example of just why.

For here’s a medium-bodied wine that’s got wonderfully classic Cabernet Sauvignon mint and blackcurrant to the fore, and with accompanying fine tannins… and interestingly came from a vintage that got off to an early start after good Winter rainfalls in 2012 led into a warm and dry Spring.

Priced at $20, with those minty and blackcurrant flavours it’s a great one to enjoy with roast lamb, or even something with a suggestion of spiciness to it.

The crowds turned out to the Joan to enjoy this high energy Latin flavoured musical which is set over three days and follows a cast of characters in the predominately Dominican-American neighbourhood of Washington Heights in New York, where bodega owner Usnavi is chasing the American Dream.

Audiences had a chance to witness some amazing up and coming local talent while enjoying the musical which was nominated for 13 Tony Awards in 2008.

For those interested in experiencing the best of local musical theatre the show will be running till Saturday, May 9.

Powerful paintings on show at Lewers

rt lovers have the chance to view works by famed Australian artist Ken Done as part of the Home/Front exhibition that is currently showing at Penrith Regional Gallery.

The suite titled ‘Attack – Japanese Midget Submarines in Sydney Harbour’ features paintings that commemorate the attempt by three Japanese midget submarines to enter Sydney Harbour and attack berthed naval ships during WWII. These powerful and thought provoking paintings are currently on display in Lewers House.

he Internet has certainly made it all rather wondrous the way we can now search out and book someone to meet us with a car at our plane, and take us straight to our hotel, cruise ship or wherever in overseas places we’ve never visited before.

And all without need for fighting with luggage to get aboard unfamiliar airport trains or buses, or to deal with questionable cowboy cabbies. Yet it can also at times be something of a minefield of communications misunderstandings, language mix-ups and worse still, plain outright being taken for a ride – but not the short ride we thought we had booked.

How nice then, to hop off our plane in Athens just recently and to be met by two smartly-dressed blokes with a cheery “G’day, welcome to Athens”, a couple of luxury E-class Mercedes kerbside to whiz the half-dozen of us to our hotel and for a city tour that afternoon, and to transfer us next day to our cruise ship.

For to our surprise, here in fact were two True Blue Dinkum Aussies: Dimitri Karoutas who was born and raised at Mosman in Sydney, and Aki Arvanitis who originally hailed from Kew in Melbourne.

Both are the sons of Greek migrants to this country, and if you are looking for a couple of “local lads done well,” here you have them.

Dimitri’s dad opened Johnnies Fruit Shop at Mosman in Sydney in 1965 (it’s still there today although under new owners,) and Aki’s dad had a Retravision

furniture and electrical store in Prahran in Melbourne from the early 1970s well into the 1980s.

Over the years Dimitri developed a successful transport business delivering supplies to Sydney restaurants and hotels, and Aki a chauffeur-drive operation ferrying amongst others, local MPs and Melbourne TV station personalities.

And when they met through a mutual friend, they got to talking about something very odd that each had discovered from regular visits they’d taken to Athens over the years: for although it had 3.75m people in its city and surrounding urban areas, Athens had just 31 licenced hire cars. Surely, thought Dimitri and Aki, there must be demand for more than this from those wanting, and able to afford, an upmarket and personalised private transport service?

And while their research proved them right, they weren’t able to crack an extra Athens hire car licence when they moved to the city back at the turn of the century.

So they opted for a regular taxi plate – putting it on a classy brand-new Mercedes rather than the more-usual budget-priced cars that make up the vast part of Athens’ 14,000 yellow-painted cab fleet.

Today their Deep Blue Tours has four E-Class Mercedes, two mini-vans and a broad network of contract drivers as well – all with Mercedes to maintain the quality of service these two Aussie-Greeks have set.

This is probably the most common reason people give for not exercising; they say they just don’t have the time.

Well let me put it to you this way: exercise is every bit as important as eating, sleeping and breathing!

It should not be viewed as an ancillary part of your day, but rather a necessity.

You probably don’t go a week without eating, and you should not go a week without exercise either.

In fact, you typically shouldn’t go more than a couple of days at most without it.

Soon you won’t want to miss your exercise sessions because you’ll notice a dip in your energy or stamina when you miss them for too long.

So you need to place a high priority on it and schedule your day around the exercise, not the other way around like most people do.

This way it will get done and you will serve as a powerful example to those who you love.

And it’s not going to be easier to start on Monday or the start of next month etc.

When it comes to exercise, there’s no time like the present.

Don’t wait another day to get your program started.

And don’t use your age as an excuse either, because no matter what your age, exercise can provide enormous benefits for your health.

If you happen to be over 40, though, it’s especially important to either start or step up your exercise program.

This is the time of life when your physical strength, stamina, balance and flexibility can start to decline, and exercise can help to counteract that dramatically. It really is that powerful.

So go on, stop throwing up excuses and start with the action. You definitely won’t regret it.

How did you get into fitness?

For a long time, my weight was a constant battle. Trying every diet under the sun and training like a maniac for 2-3 hours per day. I thought I was doing the right thing until other areas of my health started to deteriorate.

I began suffering with depression and anxiety. I was determined that meds were NOT an option. I started researching and discovered that the food I eat will have a huge impact on how I feel mentally, physically and emotionally.

I managed to stay medication free and changed my entire lifestyle. I ditched the supplements, threw out the sugar, banned processed food and fast food became a huge NO NO. Within days I noticed a difference in

Be grateful. Every day, before you get up, spend a minute to lay there and go over the things you have to be grateful for. It will change your day.

Biggest health/fitness misconception?

Calorie counting. I have a diet that most would consider ‘high fat’ and therefore ‘high calorie’ and most days, I am eating more calories than I am burning! But my

sources of fat are the secret. Grass fed meat, coconut oil, olive oil, coconut flesh and avocado are just some of the foods that I eat on a daily basis. With the removal of sugars, wheat, grains and processed foods, calories are no longer a problem.

What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy?

For me, I love feeling strong and able to do anything! I can lift heavy things, I can play with my kids for hours and I never feel sick.

What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy most?

I do CrossFit which is a sport that incorporates Olympic lifting and a broad range of functional movements that promote strength, fitness and mobility.

How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy just to take it easy?

I think goal setting is important. That way, you can stay focussed on something that is challenging but realistic. Then it becomes simple... if you ‘take it easy’, you will never reach your goal.

Freestyle: I believe everyone’s journey is unique.

I also believe that knowledge is invaluable when it comes to food and lifestyle changes.

Brushing your pet’s teeth is the single most effective way of controlling plaque.

Most pets will accept brushing if it is introduced slowly and associated with a reward.

Dog and cat toothbrushes are readily available, or you

It is important to use a toothpaste designed for pets, as human toothpaste is not designed to be swallowed.

Pet toothpastes come in different flavours and can help make teeth brushing a treat.

Alternatively, you can just use water – most of the benefit is from the brushing action and not from the toothpaste.

It is also important to encourage your pet to chew and not just feed it wet/canned food. Animals, especially dogs, love to chew and chewing has an abrasive action that helps remove plaque.

However, it is important to offer something that is safe while also being effective.

Bones are best avoided as they can be too brittle and fracture teeth.

Bone substitutes such as dental sticks and raw hide chews or pigs ears are readily available and are a much safer alternatives.

Chew toys such as rope toys are also great to encourage chewing.

Some pet food companies have released dental diets.

These diets (such as Hills Science Diet T/D) have been proven to help reduce plaque.

These diets work by physically cleaning the teeth as they do not shatter easily when bitten.

oyota Australia has unveiled the last model to be built at its Altona manufacturing plant; the new-look Camry.

Along with the facelift Aurion, the new-look Camry and Camry Hybrid will be in production until the company stops manufacturing at the end of 2017.

Having built more than 3.2 million Toyota vehicles locally since 1963, this marks the end of an era in the Australian automotive industry.

During a ceremony for employees and key stakeholders, Toyota Australia President Dave Buttner vowed that the plant’s last car would be the best global car.

“We’re extremely proud to launch the new-look Camry,” he said.

“It’s the culmination of almost four years’ hard work and is the biggest midcycle update we’ve ever embarked on.

“Although this will be the last car we build in Australia, we have vowed that it will be the best. That means we are aiming to achieve the best safety, quality and efficiency results when compared to other Camry-manufacturing plants around the world.”

Mr Buttner added that the exterior of the new-look Camry has undergone a significant transformation compared to the current model.

Pricing and vehicle specifications will be released in mid-May when the new-look Camry goes on sale.

he Western Sydney Wanderers have been dealt the cruellest of blows as their AFC Champions League title defence came to an end on Tuesday night.

To advance to the next round, the Wanderers were seeking a win over Chinese powerhouse Guangzhou Evergrande and needed the match between FC Seoul and the Kashima Antlers to end in a draw.

However, despite the Wanderers putting on a spectacular performance by defeating Guangzhou Evergrande 2-0, they were left bitterly disappointed after the match when they learned FC Seoul had scored a 91st minute goal to break a 2-2 deadlock to win the game.

The unfortunate result left the Wanderers third in their group, unable to qualify to the Round of 16.

“It’s a strange feeling to sit here and be disappointed after beating Guangzhou Evergrande 2-nil, but unfortunately the other result didn’t go our way,” Wanderers coach Tony Popovic said.

“During the competition we got seven points away from home in a very tough group but unfortunately we only picked up one point at home.”

Wanderers striker Mark Bridge, who scored a goal in the match, said the club only has itself to blame for not turning it on at home when it counted.

“It’s partly our fault but we’ve had a very tough year and I’m sure we’ll be better for it next season,” he said.

“It’s very disappointing after a performance like that we aren’t going through to the next round but unfortunately you need to pick up points at home in the Asian Champions League and we weren’t able to do that this year.”

Popovic vowed he’ll turn the Wanderers back into a powerhouse as soon as next season.

“It’s been difficult but we as a club will be better for this experience,” he said.

“When you have adversity it can either destroy you or make you stronger, and everyone will see a stronger Wanderers next year.”

ondonderry resident Dave Sieders has taken his first podium since switching to Holden during last weekend’s Australian V8 Ute Racing Series in Perth.

Bouncing back from 16th to seventh in the Championship, the 30-year-old set the track lap record in his Commodore on his way to finishing in third position.

“The crew has done an awesome job this weekend, and we’ve ended the weekend with results that are more like we expected with this new car,” Sieders said.

“The car is quick and we’ve shown that this weekend, setting our first lap record in the Holden and topping a time set by [Tony] Longhurst in 2013 by over twotenths, so it’s great to be heading back in the right direction.”

Interestingly, the race did come at a cost, with Sieders losing six more points to Championship leader Ryal Harris, who won the round with a progressive grid format from an inverted Top 10 race two.

“We have moved up in the Championship, but this weekend’s format has actually cost me points in the Championship to Ryal, when we believe we should have

assionate members from Penrith District Nitro Racing (PDNR) are calling on the NSW Government for a brand new, permanent Radio Control (RC) facility to be based at Penrith Lakes.

Last week the PDNR, which is a group of radio control enthusiasts based at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, asked its near 100 members to write to the NSW Government – as part of the Penrith Lakes Parkland Draft Vision Plan – stating the need for a permanent RC track at Penrith Lakes.

For the past 10 years, the PDNR have rented a car park at the Regatta Centre, which at times can be a logistical nightmare. Members believe a brand new, permanent track would not only be a huge boost for the sport in the local area but would allow for more race time, more events and of course, more fun.

“The obvious challenges that go along with a temporary facility are logistics,” PDNR Competition Secretary, Tony Firth said.

“Our track is like a big jigsaw puzzle which requires a significant amount of

Mr Firth also mentioned availability as another reason for a permanent facility.

“Although we are able to book most Tuesday nights, there are still around six weeks of the year that we are forced to cancel due to the Regatta Centre holding a major event,” he said.

“We would also like to hold many more weekend events for RC racers and

kids who can’t make our Tuesday night events.”

If PDNR do manage to strike gold and get a new track built, they believe it will do wonders for RC racing going forward.

“If we had a permanent RC racing facility, the sky is the limit,” Mr Firth said.

“We could immediately offer more track time as we don’t have to waste time setting up. This would open up more time for our kids and juniors to race and get home earlier.

Mr Firth said all that would be required in the interim would be a “patch of asphalt we can call our own” and then go from there.

“Our dream would be to one day have a world class facility with a multi-use on-road track, drivers stand, pit/paddock area, race control, spectator areas and amenities,” he said.

“We hope this is our time and we are excited there is an opportunity to be included in the Vision Plan.”

For the fourth year running the event will include swimming, running, walking and riding.

“We’re going to have music and a commentator and make a real day of it,” Race Director, Ally Strand said.

The event will include around 500 women ready to compete for the title with almost 1500 spectators watching on in suspense.

A ‘mini-man’ event will also be featured on the day with a 150 metre swim, a 5km bike ride and a 1km run and walk for the kids wanting to participate.

The main event titled ‘The Popular Beginners Triathlon, The Enticer’ will include a 300 metre swim, a 10km bike ride and a 2km run and walk.

“We’re going to have stalls where you can purchase triathlon clothing, an ultimate cycle expo, and a chill out zone with big pillows that you can sit on or use to exercise,” Ms Strand said.

There will also be a sprint event that includes a 750 metre swim, a 20km bike

ride and a 5km run for those women wanting a bigger challenge.

An awards presentation will be held after the events at the Sydney International Regatta Centre at 2pm.

Women are able to register on the day if they are wishing to participate.

t was a clash billed as one Penrith could possibly win but, as has been the case all season, the Emus failed to deliver when it counted, going down to West Harbour 48-5.

Coming into the game, Penrith coach Sateki Tu’ipulotu was confident his side could put in a strong and competitive performance against the Pirates who, themselves, were struggling to find their feet after six rounds.

But it wasn’t to be for the Emus, who lost focus and motivation as the game drew on.

Tu’ipulotu was at a loss to describe the poor performance.

“I was disappointed, very disappointed.

We prepared well during the week, we had a good warm up and the first half wasn’t too bad, it was 15-0,” he said.

“I thought 15-0 at half time, we’ll have a chance, but as we got back into the game, the boys fell away. I think they left their brains in the dressing room.”

Sitting with seven straight defeats to their name, Tu’ipulotu said his young side are struggling to execute and follow simple instructions.

“They can’t grasp the concept of that plus I’m probably missing a few experienced players and leaders in my team,” he said.

Tu’ipulotu admits he’ll have to take a fresh approach into upcoming games given the current plan isn’t working.

“I’ll have to change a few things at training this week,” he said.

“I’ve got to look at the personnel I’ve got and what works better for us as a team. In saying that, West Harbour didn’t deserve to win, they were awful but we were terrible.”

The match was played in terrible conditions last Saturday afternoon and Penrith simply didn’t adapt to them.

The Emus will head to the north shore this Saturday afternoon to take on sixthplaced Warringah.

“Warringah beat Parramatta last week and defeated West Harbour the week before that. It won’t be an easy task going all that way to play them but we’ll do as well as we can,” Tu’ipulotu said.

Meanwhile, Penrith’s Third Grade Colts team enjoyed their first win of the season, defeating West Harbour in a close one at Nepean Rugby Park 7-0.

Louis Brandt was Penrith’s best scoring 18 points and recording three steals and seven rebounds. Despite the loss, Penrith remain in the top six and will take on the third-placed Sydney Comets at 6pm this Saturday at Penrith Sports Stadium.

BASKETBALL: Meanwhile, Penrith’s women’s team continue their strong start to the season with a 71-61 win over the Hornets. Tahlia Tupaea enjoyed a great performance since arriving back from Australian Opals camp, scoring 22 points and six boards in just 30 minutes of play.

Penrith’s women have jumped to second on the ladder and will battle the eighth-placed Comets this Saturday.

PADDLING: The Australian junior and U23 canoe slalom tour has concluded following an entertaining weekend of racing at the Pyrenees Cup in La Seu D’Urgell, Spain. Junior C1 World’s finalist and Leonay local Noemie Fox stepped up to the senior women’s competition, winning bronze amongst a strong field.

Fellow Australians Alison Borrows (4th), Kate Eckhardt (5th) and Georgia Rankin (9th) also featured in the final. The event concluded a successful tour for the junior and U23 athletes.

et weather in Penrith last weekend managed to wash out most of netball’s opening round of games but fortunately for spectators and players, it failed to put a dampener on the Penrith District Netball Association’s (PDNA) annual March Past event.

Games held at Jamison Park Netball Courts last Saturday were officially called off from 11.30am but that wasn’t before the spectacular March Past – which sees teams across the Penrith district celebrate the start of the netball season each year – got underway in the morning.

This year’s March Past was won by the Penrith RSL Netball Club, who fittingly themed their march around the Centenary of ANZAC, while Cambridge Park Netball Club finished in second place with their theme celebrating the upcoming Netball World Cup, to be held in Sydney.

“When the rain hit, the back courts were just flooded and it wasn’t safe for our players to play on,” PDNA spokesperson, Kellie Tickner said.
