Council backflips on circus ban Original decision was labelled an ethical victory, but now Councillors have changed their mind DALE DRINKWATER

enrith Council has backflipped on its decision to prohibit circuses with exotic animals from operating on Council land. In a meeting on Monday night, eight Councillors voted to revoke the original decision made in March, with some changing their minds after having consulted with key stakeholders. One of those stakeholders was Adam St James, ringmaster at Stardust Circus that has operated on private land at Penrith Paceway and Council land at St Marys. “We would hate to see this come to an end in Penrith and to not be able to bring animals here,” he said in the meeting. “The Australian circus industry has a very strict code of practice, in association with the Australian Circus Federation, State Government and Taronga Zoo.” He said their lions are all born in Australia, and are trained through positive reinforcement, as whips have been banned for almost 20 years already, and the use of fire is prohibited with any animals. Phillip Hall from Animal Liberation NSW frequents outside of Stardust and Lennon

P

Bros Circuses handing out animal rights flyers to patrons. “No matter how good standards can be in a circus, they will never meet the psychological and behavioural needs of the animals,” he said. “Many councils have adopted a policy, this reflects that circuses don’t require animals to be entertaining.” That was Councillor Michelle Tormey’s idea when she initially requested that Penrith follow suit. “With disappointment, we are here discussing a rescission on what was a very positive ethical position Council took in March,” she said. Councillor John Thain supported Cr Tormey, and said it’s not Council’s intention to ban them from the area completely. “Just not on Council land. It’s a dying art form and it will die a natural death,” he said. Councillors Marcus Cornish, Bernard Bratusa, Tricia Hitchen, Mark Davies, Jim Aitken, Maurice Girotto and Ross Fowler voted for the policy to be revoked, and had the numbers to do so. Remaining present councillors voted against the rescission motion, with Councillors Jackie Greenow and Kevin Crameri absent.

Marcus Cornish A better future

rom kissing babies to big money promises and huge campaign buses, elections bring out plenty of stereotypical behaviour from our politicians. But without fail, they also bring out some great election myths; myths that are given even more gas thanks to social media and the 24/7 nature of politics in the news cycle. Here’s some of my favourites: You never hear from politicians until it’s election time Hang on, so you actually want them in your face every time you’re rushing for your train in the morning? The myth that politicians simply disappear outside of election campaigns simply isn’t true. Apart from spending a significant amount of time in Canberra (or in Macquarie Street if we’re talking state politics), you only have to read your local newspapers to see what your local member is up to. I dare say we’ve run hundreds of stories on Fiona Scott over the past three years, and hundreds more on David Bradbury in the term before that. It’s actually easier than ever to follow what your local member is up to given most of them have a social media presence, a website and in many cases an email newsletter you can sign up to. If you really think your local member goes missing outside of an election campaign, you’re either looking in the wrong place or you’re just plain ignorant. The media is bias when it comes to election coverage This one isn’t a total myth – there are indeed certain media organisations that present a very slanted view of politics

and hence of election campaigns. Often, they’re simply being reflective of their audience but other times they’re just plain one-sided. However, the suggestion that all media is bias when it comes to elections is just plain wrong. In fact, depending on how consumed by an election campaign you wish to be, there’s actually more opportunities than ever to get a balanced view and make up your own mind, with both ABC News 24 and Sky News showing a plethora of full press conferences and announcements each and every day (not just the 10 second snippets we used to get). And there’s often back stories to why certain elements of the campaign are covered through the media and others aren’t. Take for example Bill Shorten’s visit to Westfield Penrith last Friday. In a major campaign bungle for local candidate Emma Husar, nobody from

News.............................................1-29 Business.................................30-31 History ............................................32

the ALP told the Weekender that the shopping centre visit was going to happen, hence taking it out of our mix of stories for this week’s paper. Often, the smallest breakdown in communication can lead to litany of flow-on issues. You’ve never heard of the candidate “Who?” seems to be a common response when stories on politicians are run; a jab at the belief that certain politicians are unknowns because they do nothing most of the time. To me, that always says more about the person asking the question than the candidate, MP or minister themselves. If you know who Charlotte from ‘Geordie Shore’ is but you’ve never heard of Mathias Cormann, your viewing habits need a re-think. Truth is that if you read your local newspapers and use that wonderful invention called Google, you’ll find out about your candidates pretty quickly. All politicians lie anyway Yes, election promises do get broken from time to time but you’ll find in the main that most Governments take every step possible to maintain and fund their commitments. Trouble may hit when it comes to the Senate or other more important issues emerging, but the old myth that ‘politicians say anything to get elected’ isn’t really true when the facts are presented. Often, our ‘want it now’ attitude means we sometimes think promises have been thrown out the window when in reality, they’re still being worked on behind the scenes. Neither major party announces policies with zero intent of implementing them.

olice say 51-year-old Penrith woman Debbie Spencer was “living in rough conditions” when she was found unconscious in the CBD on Sunday morning. She sadly passed away in hospital on Monday night. Ms Spencer was found by a friend and a passer-by just after 7am on Sunday, May 22, on a pedestrian pathway that runs parallel to Lemongrove Bridge, on Evan Street, Penrith. She had suffered head injuries, and was taken to Nepean Hospital in a critical condition before she passed away on Monday. Police are treating her death as suspicious. Detective Chief Inspector at Penrith Police Station, Grant Healey, said police are appealing for public assistance. “We are very curious about the circumstances surrounding her injuries and how she came to be like that,” Det. Insp. Healey said. “At the moment, police are trying to piece together her last movements. “We are desperate for help from community members to find out what happened.”

Federal Election 2016

Smart tactic or sign of desperation? ‘Howard’s Battlers’ still love him: Former PM gets warm reception during visit to Penrith DALE DRINKWATER

or John Howard, Lindsay was more often than not a battleground that he walked away from victorious. And 20 years after he was first elected Prime Minister, Howard’s Battlers still love him. In a move that will be regarded as smart by some and desperate by others, Mr Howard joined the campaign trail on Wednesday, walking through Westfield Penrith with Lindsay MP Fiona Scott. The shopping centre walkthrough comes after Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull cancelled plans to do the same, then Opposition Leader Bill Shorten jumped at the chance just days later. One local told Mr Howard that “currently there are no good leaders”, with Mr Howard assuring him that Mr Turnbull is a great leader with strong economic skills. “The quality of economic management matters to people who live in electorates like Lindsay,” he said. “I don’t think the Australian people want to go back to the chaos of the Rudd, Gillard, Rudd years.” Ironically, Mr Howard is the last Prime Minister to see out a full term in power.

F

One voter, Kevin, told the Weekender that the visit by Mr Howard was a ‘master teaching’ for Ms Scott, who holds Lindsay by a narrow margin. “You wouldn’t want anyone else if you were Fiona Scott to show you the ropes,” he said. Ms Scott said Mr Howard has been her political hero. “The first Federal Election I got to vote in was the 1996 election, and of course my first federal vote was for Jackie Kelly,” she said. After mingling with local residents, Mr Howard attended a Liberal Party luncheon in Penrith. Labor candidate for Lindsay, Emma Husar, said it was “quite extraordinary” that Mr Howard walked through Westfield when Mr Turnbull is yet to do the same.

Airport concerns highlight NXT’s campaign in the west

Coalition says NDIS rollout will provide huge benefits to Lindsay indsay MP Fiona Scott says people with disability in the electorate are set to benefit from an investment of almost $170 million in additional services with the continued rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) from July 1. Importantly, up to 1,750 new jobs will be created in the Nepean Blue Mountains district alone as part of the scheme. Minister for Social Services, Christian Porter, and Assistant Minister for Disability Services, Jane Prentice, were in Lindsay this week with Ms Scott celebrating the countdown to the full scheme rollout of the NDIS with students at Kurrambee School. “Every Australian deserves the opportunity to achieve in life and participate in their community, but practical challenges can put that out of reach for many people with disability,” Mr Porter said. “The NDIS is one of the largest reforms in Australia’s history. It gives people the support they need to overcome those challenges, so they can achieve their goals and aspirations. “The NDIS funds the reasonable supports that participants need to live full lives and achieve their goals, whether they want assistance with education, employment, social participation, independence, living arrangements or health and wellbeing.”

ll trails on the campaign seem to be leading to western Sydney, and that’s where Nick Xenophon and his Nick Xenophon Team (NXT) candidates found themselves last Saturday. At the Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club, Mr Xenophon was joined by Candidate for Lindsay Stephen Lynch, Candidate for MacArthur Richard Bakoss and NSW Senate Candidates Aidan Dalgliesh and Anthony Dona. Mr Xenophon said that his message to the Federal Government is to not treat

A

the people of Lindsay and MacArthur as ‘mugs’ in regards to a second Sydney airport. “The Government is not being up front with the seat of Lindsay as to what will happen with flights paths... it’s keeping voters in the dark, they deserve to know before they make a choice,” he said. Mr Lynch added that the owners of Sydney Airport have the first choice at owning a western Sydney airport, that would hurt competition and could result in Badgerys Creek receiving planes Kingsford Smith “doesn’t want”. The NXT candidates spent the day travelling across western Sydney.

Christian Porter, Jane Prentice and Fiona Scott at the Kurrambee School this week Mrs Prentice said the scheme will provide lifelong support to people with permanent and significant disability. “For people with disability in Lindsay, the NDIS will bring a world of choice and control, providing access to the supports and services that are right for them,” Mrs Prentice said. “Thanks to the strong representation of Fiona Scott, children and young people in Lindsay aged under 18 years have benefited from access to the NDIS early transition site in the Nepean Blue Mountains since July 1, 2015.” She said it is estimated that the scheme will ultimately support a better life for almost 3,800 participants in Lindsay.

New face in election campaign hopes to make an impact DALE DRINKWATER

fter years of supporting the Liberal Party, local man Steve Roddick has had enough. He has now resigned from the Board of the Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce to run against the Liberal Party in the seat of Lindsay, as a candidate for Australian Liberty Alliance (ALA). Mr Roddick supported the Liberal Party during the last election, but said over the last two years he has been more and more disappointed with their policies. “There’s a lot of talk at the moment about jobs and production, but there’s no policy behind it,” he said. Mr Roddick said there are three stand outs in the ALA’s 20 key policies, such as reciprocal foreign property rights, a pause on visas for people from Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries, and a policy on water management. “If we can’t buy property in China they can’t buy property here,” he said. “It doesn’t align with my beliefs that we should be selling farming land, mining land or ports to foreign nationals – it should be a lease.” Mr Roddick said he does believe in immigration, considering his father came to Australia from Scotland to serve for the Royal Australian Air Force. However, he supports a 10 year moratorium on new resident visas from Islamic

ALA candidate Steve Roddick countries that support Sharia Law, that he admits is controversial. Mr Roddick was also attracted to the ALA’s policy to replicate the Snowy Hydro Scheme, that catches water, uses it for electricity, and then uses it for irrigation for local farming. “It seems logical. I don’t understand why we haven’t done that before,” he said.

COUNCIL BRIEFS ● Council officially opened six upgraded sports facilities at different venues last week. The upgrades were jointly funded by the Federal Government and Council. Our sporting fields attract thousands of visitors to the City each year and these upgrades are a boon to the City. The upgrade include seating at Andrews Road Baseball Complex and a shade awning and surface upgrade at Grey Gums Reserve; lighting at Hunter Fields, Emu Plains; shade and canteen at Jamison Park; Andromeda Drive Reserve, Cranebrook playing surface drainage upgrade and Hickeys Park playing surface upgrade. ● Bushfire season might be over but Council is reminding the community to check before lighting a fire outdoors. ‘Backyard burning’, including burning domestic waste or vegetation in the open or in incinerators, is not allowed in the Penrith Local Government Area to protect local and regional air quality and public health. On-the-spot fines can be issued. However, Council can approve the burning of dead vegetation in ‘pile burns’ under certain conditions. For more information on what, how and where you can burn safely, see the Approvals to Burn brochure on Council’s website or contact your local Rural Fire Service. ● Fund our Future is a national campaign which brings together people in fast growing communities across Australia to demand a dedicated Government infrastructure fund to address the backlog in road, public transport and health infrastructure and future proof our cities as they continue to grow. Already 40,000 emails have been sent to the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition and other politicians. Make our voice heard – join the campaign: fundourfuture.info

Labor pushes hard on education funding The “Gonski Billboard” has visited the electorate of Lindsay to highlight the party’s education campaign. Labor candidate for Lindsay, Emma Husar, said across the electorate of Lindsay, Labor would provide $234 million more in funding for school education over the next 10 years. “This is funding for our children’s education that will be available if Labor is

elected. It will not be available if the Coalition is returned,” Ms Husar said. She said under Labor, this $234 million in Gonski funding will support things such as remedial literacy and numeracy support in every school, extension classes to challenge students that are excelling in class, increased Year 12 completion through more alternative and vocational pathways, access to specialist allied health

olyton pharmacist Howard Mai fears a co-payment on prescription medicine will hit his customers, who are already struggling to afford medicine, very hard. “The situation is real. We’ve got local customers who are struggling already in terms of affordability of medication,” he said. Mr Mai was visited by Labor Candidate for Lindsay Emma Husar and Senator Doug Cameron on Wednesday, to address concerns over affordability of health care. He is concerned the Turnbull Government’s increase to Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme co-payments will force patients to pick and choose what medicines they can afford. “People who take five medications or more, how do they decide? Is it for their asthma they’re going to take, or is it for their blood pressure?” he asked. Ms Husar said the Turnbull Government’s plans to increase the cost of pharmaceutical medicine will hurt the hard working Colyton community. “This community has some of the highest rates of diabetes, heart and also lung issues,” she said. “This is the eighth highest electorate in the country for bulk-billing, so when you talk about co-payments, families will go without.” Mr Cameron said the Labor Party will not support a co-payment on prescriptions, and if elected, will index fees for doctors and within 100 days, will legislate against the privatisation of Medicare. He claims the Turnbull Government’s moves are essentially the Americanisation of Australia’s health system, and that without a healthy workforce, you can’t grow jobs.

MALCOLM TURNBULL. WHY SHOULD WE SUPPORT YOU IF YOU WON’T SUPPORT OUR KIDS? Traditional jobs in Australia are disappearing every day – fast. If NSW kids don’t get the education they’ll need for future jobs, they won’t have a future. Malcolm Turnbull knows this, yet he’s cutting over $1 billion of Gonski funding for NSW schools. That funding is urgently needed to ensure every child can get the skills essential for their future.

THE JOBS OUR KID GET TOMORROW W S DEPEND ON WHAT ILL TH LEARN TODAY. EY

If NSW schools lose Gonski funding now, thousands of NSW kids will get left behind forever.

Police had a good reason to pull over drink driver

Trent Chalmers has been stripped of his licence for eight months and fined $600 after pleading guilty to mid-range drink driving. Penrith Local Court heard Mr Chalmers was intercepted after overtaking a police car and later blew 0.084. “It’s not a good idea to overtake police cars. It generally gives them a reason to stop you,” Magistrate Roger Clisdell said.

24-year-old convicted, but magistrate shows compassion

A young man who collided with a broken-down car, injuring two victims, has received sympathy from his presiding magistrate. Charles Paul Xiberras, 24, fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm. The court heard Mr Xiberras was driving to work, listening to music and chatting to his passenger when he mounted a slight crest in the road and slammed into the stationary car. The court was told speed was not a factor and that the electrician thought all the cars in front of him were moving, but one, with a dead battery and no hazard lights, was not. “I suspect if it wasn’t him, it would have been someone else,” Magistrate Roger Clisdell said. “I have to convict him. I have no choice in the matter,” he added. Mr Xiberras was fined $1,000 and disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Pensioner tried to pawn stolen mobile phone

A carers pensioner who hocked a stolen phone has been ordered to pay compensation. Magistrate Robert Clisdell told Robert Norman Inglis his attempt to make a quick buck had backfired. “Don’t try to pawn things that aren’t

yours, especially in your name as you’re going to get caught,” he said. He was fined $200 and ordered to pay $120 in compensation.

Teen warned he’ll go to jail if he gets behind the wheel again

A teenager caught driving while disqualified for the fourth time has been slugged an extra 100 hours of community service and warned he is perilously close to jail. Magistrate Roger Clisdell gave Paul Panoussis one last chance to shape-up or risk a “short, sharp period” in the slammer. “Mr Panoussis, you’re 19. If I sent you to jail they would eat you up and spit you out in about five minutes,” he said. “You better not fail.” He is barred from driving until 2024.

Man drove drunk after finding out wife was about to give birth

An expectant father who drove home drunk after finding out his wife was in labour has been banned from getting behind the wheel for six months. Penrith Local Court heard Nassif Hanna Accary, 29, went to the pub for a few drinks on March 16 not expecting to receive a phone call telling him to return home. Magistrate Roger Clisdell told the fatherof-three, who pleaded guilty to low-range drink driving, he should have known better. “We all know how unpredictable birth can be,” he said. “The ads are there. If you’re going to have a drink, have a plan B. If you have a wife who’s about to have a baby, have a plan C.” He was convicted and fined $400.

Young driver given reality check by magistrate

A magistrate has described a P-plater fatality in chilling detail in a bid to scare a young motorist into submission. Penrith Local Court heard Peter Kamel was lucky to be alive after flipping his car

on its roof during a “night of insanity”. Magistrate Roger Clisdell was scathing of his reckless and negligent driving, noting he was speeding through major intersections. “Police couldn’t catch you, you were going that fast,” he said. “If you’re stupid enough to drive like a lunatic again, you’ll kill yourself.” Mr Kamel said he instantly regretted his actions and was thankful no one else was injured. “I can’t sleep now, let alone if I’d hurt anyone,” he said. He was fined $1,000 and disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Motorcycle fun could have landed man with big fines

Clint Bradbury has been stung with $750 worth of fines after riding his recreational motorcycle on public property. Mr Bradbury fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with using an unregistered and uninsured vehicle and being unlicenced. Magistrate Roger Clisdell told the defendant he faced fines of up to $2,200 for each offence, but decided not to “hit him” that hard. “Don’t ride that bike anywhere other than private property,” he cautioned.

Man warned to stay off drugs or risk further trouble

Michael Joseph Harvey has been placed on a six month good behaviour bond after pleading guilty to driving with an illicit substance in his blood. Magistrate Roger Clisdell said he was prepared to accept that Mr Harvey, who has completed the first phase of rehab, was not a major risk on the roads unless he was on drugs. “Stay off the drugs – all they do is get you in trouble,” he said.

Man “freaked out” after car accident

A man who fled the scene of a crash

has been fined $990. Adrian James Hardi fronted Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with negligent driving and failing to give his particulars. In explaining his actions, Mr Hardy told the court he just “freaked out and drove off”. “It was a mistake,” he said. “You caused great inconvenience to the person,” Magistrate Margaret McGlynn said. He was fined $660 for negligent driving and $330 for failing to provide his particulars to the owner.

Man faces a “one-way trip to Silverwater”

Hrvoje Pokas has been ordered to fit an ignition interlock device to his car after pleading guilty to his second high-range drink driving charge. Mr Pokas, who appeared before Penrith Local Court last Thursday, was advised he would have to blow into the breathiliser before starting his car for four years once he was eligible to drive again. Magistrate Roger Clisdell said it was a “one-way trip to Silverwater” if he repeated the offence. He was fined $1,000, disqualified from driving for nine months and ordered to enter into a three-year good behaviour bond.

21-year-old told to “grow up” after poor behaviour on roads

A young man who committed a string of driving offences has been told to grow up. Mitchell John Evans, 21, fronted Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with special range PCA, driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle and failing to display his L-plates. Magistrate Margaret McGlynn told the labourer his traffic record showed a complete lack of regard and concern for other motorists. “21 isn’t a child,” she reminded him. He was stripped of his licence for five months and fined $1,160.

St Marys needs more parking

t Marys commuters have the choice to either pay for new tolls on the M4 or pay for increased transport fares – that’s if they’re lucky enough to find a car park. With a toll to be introduced to the M4 Motorway from next year, Member for Londonderry Prue Car and Shadow Minister for Transport Jodi McKay want the Government to improve access to St Marys Station. On Monday, Ms Car said since the construction of the current multi-storey car park in 2010, thousands more people have moved to the area increasing the need for more car spaces. “Ropes Crossing has exploded in that time, and you cannot get a park in this commuter car park after 7.30am,” she said. “The Baird Government is constantly releasing land in this area... If we want people to catch public transport, let them park their car.” Ms McKay said additions to the St Marys multi-storey car park would be an easy fix. “It would just be a matter of putting other levels on top of it, it’s not rebuilding. The land is here,” she said. The Government has confirmed that the widened section of the M4 due to open mid next year will be a toll way, which Ms McKay said is another blow to western Sydney. “With the new Opal fares as well, for people of western Sydney [travelling five days a week] it’s a 12.5 per cent increase,” she said. The pair are calling on the State Government to provide funding for more car spaces at St Marys Station in the June 21 State Budget. A spokesperson for Transport for NSW said the Government understands the importance of delivering more parking at train stations for customers. “Since March 2011, more than 5,800 new commuter spaces have been provided for customers across NSW with a further 7,900 on the way,” she said. She said 300 car parking spaces will be added to Penrith Station, and more planning and design work will be undertaken to see what accessibility projects will be delivered next. “An upgrade to St Marys car park and other commuter car parks in western Sydney will be considered as part of this ongoing work,” she said.

It’s understood Mr Buxton, who was in his early 30s, had not been an active member of the gang for several years but he was known to police. The shooting happened just after 9pm last Thursday, May 19, with police and emergency services called to Mr Buxton’s family home in Coral Pea Court, Colyton, after reports of shots fired. Mr Buxton was treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics, but he died at the scene. He had several gunshot wounds, including one to his head, it’s understood. Police continue their investigation under Strike Force Thistleton, with

Superintendent Greg Peters from St Marys LAC, explaining there are several lines of inquiry they will be making. “It’s too early in the investigation to establish any motive,” he said. “We are making lines of inquiry in relation to all aspects, including if it was a targeted attack or not.” Police have been told by witnesses there were a number of people seen running from the residence but there were no suspects in custody at the time the Weekender went to print. Mr Buxton’s wife and child were inside the home at the time of the attack, with police told Mr Buxton was taking out the garbage bins at the time he was gunned down. “I haven’t personally spoken to his family but I imagine they would be quite shocked, particularly his wife,” Superintendent Peters said. One neighbour from the residential area told the Weekender he heard up to five

gun shots ring out when he ran out to see what had happened. By the time he got outside, it was too late for him to see who was responsible for the shooting. Police are also examining CCTV footage from Mr Buxton’s house that could have captured the incident unfold. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. “We ask that whoever is responsible for this hand themselves in or we will track you down,” Superintendent Peters said.

Consumers dogged by dodgy deals NSW Fair Trading has received more than 20 complaints so far this year from consumers having significant and costly problems with dog breeders.

In some cases consumers have found themselves out of pocket and responsible for expensive vet bills for sick puppies suffering serious diseases.

Dogs NSW spokesperson Brian Crump said all dog breeders should abide by the Australian Consumer Law and the code of ethics of Dogs NSW.

Baird the builder checks in on progress Premier says new Ambulance Superstation in Penrith will be the “best in its class” DALE DRINKWATER

SW Premier Mike Baird toured Penrith last week to visit two major infrastructure builds from the State Government. Mr Baird turned the sod at the site of the new Ambulance Superstation in High Street, that will increase the number of ambulances from 12 to 22, and accommodate more paramedics in the area. “We all acknowledge the great job that our paramedics do, but this enables them to do a better job,” he said. “There will be access to the best facilities, and the best possible service you can get. We will have right here in Penrith a centre that’s going to be looked at across the country as the best in its class.” Mr Baird was joined by Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres, Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies and Minister for Health Jillian Skinner, who said the station will help take pressure off Nepean Hospital. “The more we can allow our paramedics to treat patients on the road, as some don’t have to come into hospital, the better it will be,” Ms Skinner said. She added that more flexibility could be added to where ambulances take patients.

State Politics

“There’s work going on to have a look at where an ambulance takes a patient,” she said. “We want to be much more flexible to take them to a hospital where there’s not a particular demand at the moment.” Ms Skinner said some patients in the Nepean catchment could be sent to the Hawkesbury and Mt Druitt hospitals, to relieve the load on Nepean Hospital. The current Penrith ambulance station, that was built in the 1930s, is expected to close once the superstation opens mid-2017. The superstation is one of nine across the state, as part of the Government’s $150 million Sydney Ambulance Metropolitan Infrastructure Strategy. After a quick bite to eat at Murray’s Sandwich Shop in North Penrith, Mr Baird toured the site of the $70 million Werrington Arterial project, that will connect the Great Western Highway to the M4 by the end of this year. The two kilometre stretch jointly funded by the NSW and Federal Governments is being widened to four lanes, and will have two east facing ramps onto and off the M4. The RMS said west facing on and off ramps will be investigated when demand increases for traffic in that direction.

Man narrowly escapes jail time

Busy intersection to be improved Work to start Monday on changes to Derby Street and Parker Street

The busy Parker Street and Derby Street intersection. Photo: Melinda Jane DALE DRINKWATER

pgrades to the Derby Street and Parker Street intersection are expected to begin on Monday, May 30, now Penrith Council has licensed a work site to the construction company for three months. DownerMouchel will be working for around 20 nights between 8pm and 5am, undertaking works for the NSW Government’s $246 million Pinch Point program. Parker Street will have its northbound

U

and southbound right turn bays extended, and the kerb line in the centre median where the right turn bays are extended will be adjusted, with the installation of CCTV to monitor traffic. Asphalt and line marking will be replaced, traffic light phasing will be adjusted, and 11 native shrubs in the northern right turn bay will be removed. Minister for Roads, Duncan Gay, said the work is one of three key projects across western Sydney to relieve traffic congestion. “These projects add to the more than

$80 million in pinch point projects the NSW Government has already delivered across Sydney, which aim to reduce traffic delays, manage congestion and improve travel times on Sydney’s major roads, particularly during peak travel periods,” he said. “With congestion currently costing Sydney around $5.1 billion each year, the NSW Government is committed to maximising the use of existing road space, making smart improvements, and delivering travel time savings for motorists.”

A man who pleaded guilty to masturbating on trains while filming female passengers on his phone has escaped jail. Lucas John Braund fronted Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with 81 counts of indecency. The court heard Mr Braund, aged in his mid-40s, would expose himself and masturbate while filming his victims with his other hand, later uploading the footage to the Internet. Generally, his victims were seated about two metres away during the offences and were often alone with the accused in the carriage. The crimes were committed in the proximity of Parramatta on trains or buses between 2013 and 2015. Most of his victims were unaware of his behaviour, but on several occasions, they were. This Magistrate Margaret McGlynn found, was clearly an aggravating feature. “A solitary woman in a carriage otherwise empty was vulnerable,” she said. The most serious case, where Mr Braund approached and faced a woman making her exit difficult, would have resulted in the woman feeling frightened and “trapped”, Magistrate McGlynn said. In handing down her decision, Magistrate McGlynn noted Mr Braund had received treatment for his “compulsion” and had volunteered his involvement and guilt after police raided his property. He was given an 18 month and 14 month suspended sentence and placed on a fiveyear good behaviour bond. – Alena Higgins

More parking needed Penrith Council appears to be taking a leaf out of Clover Moore’s ‘anti-motor car’ policy book if the published plans for the intended ‘revamp’ of the centre of Penrith are any indication. A whole car park will be lost with this development. Instead of wasting money on fuzzy feel-good greening projects, how about concentrating on the provision of important basic facilities such as car parking. The money being wasted on the planned pedestrian bridge over the Nepean River could be better used in the provision of facilities such as this and would be welcomed by the residents. It is all very nice to have cultural programs established in Penrith but these benefit only a few of the residents who are that way inclined. With the population in the greater Penrith area growing at such a rapid rate it is imperative that some foresight be used when assessing any projects in the future. KEITH EVERETT, WERRINGTON COUNTY

Support for MP In response to the article ‘I stand for traditional marriage’ (Weekender May 19) in my opinion MP for Mulgoa Tanya Davies is 100 per cent correct. What I consider a normal family, mother, father and children has been a proven structure for stability for a very, very long time.

Unfortunately a minority of different groups are not content to live their lives in quiet enjoyment but are intent on forcing their ideology on the masses with very clever spin doctoring. There have been three generations since the end of World War II who have had everything handed to them on a plate and have never had to fight for anything. So our lax attitude to all the minority groups is to roll over and let them have their way which is the easy solution, and today these groups have gained enormous political clout. PETER TOWNSEND, PENRITH

Not so fresh Woolworths proudly say they are the ‘fresh food people’ but for South Penrith residents, that doesn’t seem to be the case. I have now stopped shopping at the Woolworths store in South Penrith as the used by dates on meats have become ridiculous, while the fresh fruit and vegetables are often exceptionally limited. Recently I couldn’t even buy a carrot in the middle of the day because the barrel was empty. I’ve switched to Coles at Nepean Village and I am a much happier shopper. Why is it that the Woolworths store in Southlands seems to be taking everyone for a ride? EVELYN, VIA EMAIL

Learning is no bull: Students get new insight into beef production

The weekly views of Penrith’s Mayor

New West eNews

Students from McCarthy Catholic College, Emu Plains, with their Poll Hereford steer. The students are part of the UniSchools Steer Challenge DALE DRINKWATER

tudents from Caroline Chisholm College, McCarthy Catholic College and Xavier College are learning first hand that the beef industry is no bull. They make up the 120 students from 14 western Sydney schools who are putting their husbandry skills to the test and each raising their own Poll Hereford steer over 100 days. The UniSchools Steer Challenge is Western Sydney University’s (WSU) annual project to provide a practical and theoretical side to the reality of beef production.

S

Adjunct Fellow with WSU’s School of Science and Health, Stephen Blunden, said students compete against each other to feed, handle and care for their Poll Hereford. “The UniSchools Steer Challenge has been running for over 16 years now, and we continue to be impressed with the enthusiasm and pride that the students have for the competition and for taking care of their steers,” he said. Students received their bull at WSU’s Hawkesbury campus, along with advice on feeding, nutrition and animal welfare, to fitting, grooming and how to appraise their steer.

Penrith is transforming. We will have a population of more than a quarter-of-a-million by 2031. Penrith Progression established a vision for Penrith City and we’re working to deliver this by: • Building a bustling City Centre that’s a pleasure to walk and get around. • Making inner city living a reality and doing business in the City Centre easy. • Connecting ‘Our River’ to the City Centre. • Creating a vibrant, colourful outdoor life. • Adopting fresh ideas, projects and partnerships to help us grow and prosper. • Delivering jobs for the future.

Planning proposals currently on public exhibition include the rezoning of land for the development of a City Park. This is an important milestone for Council in delivering on the blueprint for our City Centre. Council is committed to creating 45,000+ new jobs and 25,000+ new dwellings across our City by 2031. Raising sew much money: Quilt helps in quest to cure cancer

More than 100 cats given a fresh start thanks to Penrith residents JADE ALIPRANDI

ver 125 cats have been saved by the Penrith community over the past financial year thanks to Petbarn’s pet adoption program. Together with RSPCA NSW, Petbarn Penrith Homemaker Centre has been busy finding forever homes for pets in need. Speaking with the Weekender, Assistant Manager at Petbarn Penrith, Jake Lawson, said he’s happy to see so many cats go to loving homes. “Petbarn Adoption Centres across Australia have beaten last financial year’s total, in fact we have doubled it,” he said. “It’s really awesome to see all the cats going to homes where they will have someone to love them.” Across Petbarn’s 100 Pet Adoption Centres in Australia, over 5,000 animals have been saved this past financial year. Mr Lawson said the program works well because locals are able to come into the store and meet the cats then and there. “No appointment is needed to meet the cats we have up for adoption,” he said. “Locals are able to come and interact with them and they seem to really love it like that.” Mr Lawson explained that choosing to adopt rather than purchase a cat can help

Having taken part in the fundraiser for almost 15 years, the women in Hobbysew’s Friday class have made a machine embroidered quilt to raffle off in an attempt to raise funds. Teacher, Ruth Marshall, said they raise a few thousand dollars every year. “This fundraiser is a huge deal for us as many women who have come into our

Gamers unite for special charity event Western Sydney University students to show off their inner nerd for charity gaming challenge JADE ALIPRANDI

ext week Western Sydney University (WSU) students will take part in a 24-hour gaming marathon for charity, with members of the public invited to join in on the fun. The group of students known as ‘Nerdfighters’ took on a fundraising challenge last year and managed to donate over $900 to Westmead Children’s Hospital by selling chocolates. This year, the group have stuck to a children’s charity, choosing Starlight Children’s Foundation, but have taken it upon themselves to create their own charity event. President of the group and event organiser, Emma Del Dot, said there’s been a keen interest from people for the marathon event. “We have already registered 24 people and have a further 68 interested,” she said. “Last year was such a great success for a last minute idea, so with the planning that’s gone into this we are hoping to double last year’s total.” The fun event will start next Thursday, June 2, at midday and finish on Friday, June 3, at midday at WSU’s Werrington

Councillor Marcus Cornish’s request that all development applications for places of public worship and community centres, including amendments and alterations, be voted on by all Councillors has failed to gain enough support. Cr Cornish wanted every application involving places of public worship and community centres to automatically come before an Ordinary Council meeting. However, Councillor John Thain refuted the idea, and suggested that Council officers could notify Councillors instead, to which Councillors could choose. Height limits for development in the Penrith Panthers Precinct are going up. A planning proposal was submitted to Penrith Council to change the maximum permitted height for certain land within the precinct, that was supported by every present Councillor at Monday night’s meeting. The proposal sought to amend the Local Environment Plan 2010 Height of Buildings Map to permit increased maximum building heights, and included a development scheme of residential and mixed-use, incorporating a range of residential tower buildings. Deputy Mayor Ross Fowler has called for a public meeting for residents in Nepean Avenue, who may be affected by a shared pathway in their street. Cr Fowler said he received a petition by people concerned about the future shared pathway. He said no one is necessarily against the pathway, which would make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists, but there are concerns over amenity. Cr Fowler said a public meeting will enable locals to discuss the matter further. A young Colyton woman has addressed Penrith Council, thanking them for their support of Colyton youth through the Colyton Community Action Plan. Tanya Moran, who attends Colyton Trade High School, said the ‘Youth + Future’ addition to the action plan will give youth the opportunities to help them succeed. “The action plan will help the next generation in Colyton to achieve their dreams,” she said. Ms Moran said if she had the support of the action plan earlier, juggling the HSC and organising university would have been easier.

ife Education NSW is calling for more Penrith children to engage in physical activity after it was revealed one in four kids are considered to be obese. With a recent warning from the Western Sydney Local Health District around the increase of diabetes cases in the local area, many school-aged Penrith children are missing out on preventative education programs which enable young people to make healthier choices around food and nutrition. Life Education NSW CEO, Kellie Sloane, said preventative education is the first step in the right direction. “As more adults in Sydney’s west battle diabetes, preventive education is key to changing perceptions about food in children,” she said.

L

“We want to see every child in Penrith armed with the knowledge to make healthy choices.” Life Education’s programs involve schools selecting to have the mobile classroom visit them, providing a unique learning opportunity for students. “We are committed to building stronger partnerships with schools in the Penrith region,” Ms Sloane said. “Our educators are passionate about giving children the skills to make positive decisions in their own lives.” Life Education NSW is a communitybased, not for profit organisation at the front line of positive and preventative drug and health education that empowers children and young people to make safer and healthier choices throughout their lives. The programs are received state-wide, with more than 280,000 students in over 1200 schools taking part each year.

BUSINESS A you being realistic Are or idealistic? o

W

ith another season of Australian ‘Shark Tank’ on television at present, we all have the opportunity to cringe at the blunt feedback, cheer those who snag a great deal with a Shark and become an armchair expert on all things entrepreneurial. What I love about ‘Shark Tank’ is that the ‘sharks’ are not afraid to tell someone that their idea won’t work or that they haven’t thought through their business model well enough. Obviously a budding entrepreneur should be passionate about their idea and love what they are doing, but the panel of Sharks bring a big dose of reality to many prospective business owners, telling them that what they love and think is beautiful, is actually pretty ugly and needs a lot of work to be viable. So how do you balance realism and idealism? This is the ultimate, bottom line test: ‘will this idea make money?’ If not, your idea is just an expensive hobby or a charity. There is nothing wrong with either of those outcomes

C

if that is what you are aiming for. But realism trumps idealism when facts and figures don’t add up to turning a profit. What do you do if you discover that your amazing idea has no future as a profit-making business? You have a choice, which is incumbent on your reason for running a business in the first place: are you passionate about your idea or are you passionate about running a business? If you cannot bear the thought of letting go of your ‘money pit’ idea and have no desire to find another idea that will work, it’s highly likely you are not an entrepreneur. As anyone who has been in business for a while will tell you, a successful venture takes tremendous hard work and commitment to the process, not just the passion for the idea. Your passion might be your motivation, but it has to be coupled with openness to change direction or modify your ideas if required. Without this realism, you may find yourself running a business that is short-lived.

ontinuing the workplace culture topic and how building a positive workplace culture is highly beneficial for businesses. A great company culture is always evolving. As your business grows (in number of clients, revenue, staff size, etc), you will discover new business objectives and strategic initiatives you wish to implement. Just as you invest in physical resources like IT and office space, it is critical to invest in developing and enhancing your culture over time. When you employ initiatives that focus on people and meeting essential human needs, they build positive workplace cultures that thrive even in challenging times. Make sure you remember the following things: People matter: The most important part of any organisation is its people. Getting the right people is essential to positive workplace culture. That’s why successful companies spend so much time and money on attracting, retaining, and developing people with the right values,

cultural fit and attitude. Organisations that focus on people create positive workplace cultures effortlessly. People with aligned values and behaviours create positive and happy workplace cultures. Be transparent and set clear expectations: Creating a cultural identity can seem like a shapeless task that is potentially boundless in scope. Step one to push through this challenge is creating a simple and easy-to-understand vision for what you are trying to accomplish and what sorts of behaviours, attitudes, and approaches are (and are not) valued by your organisation. Be consistent and stress accountability: A great culture begins with the CEO/ owner and other leaders proactively setting the tone, and that culture permeates throughout the organisation when your people see this example being set. Team members will likely notice if you do not “walk the talk,” so it can be helpful to think of yourself and your leadership team as role models for the culture of your business. If you consistently present it in the right way, others will follow suit.

n a picturesque setting, Nepean Rowing Club, often referred to as ‘The Rowers’, is known for its amazing views of the river and mountains. Sitting on the banks of the Nepean River in Penrith, the club has had many major improvements over the last few years. CEO Greg Hinvest said the business has been thriving. “We were very busy last year and we are even busier this year,” he said. “In particular, the number of people dining at the club is constantly increasing.” Sitting in the same spot for almost 90 years, the club will celebrate the milestone birthday in April, 2018. Mr Hinvest said food has always been an important service component of the club over the years. “A club’s food offering is more important than it has ever been as there is more competition than ever, and there are so many things you have to get right,” he said. “The staff, obviously, but also

the equipment, suppliers, menus, blackboard specials, pricing, and the list goes on. “I’m pleased to say that our caterers, ‘Maze’, work extremely hard in all areas and it shows – it is definitely paying off.” With the club in possibly the best shape it has ever been, Mr Hinvest said you can’t beat it anywhere else in western Sydney. “We’ve made so many improvements in many different areas and I feel that we’ve got the club in very good shape at the moment,” he said. “We’re a very good, small club, with great friendly staff and one of the very best views in western Sydney.” The staff at the club are always complimented by customers on how friendly they are, their easy parking access, the great food provided, the beer they serve, and the amazing spot they are on where people can come and relax. Mighty Nepean proved a delight for water skiing

One year ago...

Water skiing in Penrith became popular after the 1950s when it gained worldwide attention. Photo: Penrith City Library

T

he length and width of the mighty Nepean River made it perfect as an iconic place for rowing. However, these characteristics drew a different crowd in the 1960s, which soon put the Nepean River on the map in record-breaking fashion. In 1963, the short lived publication, The St Marys Penrith Times, followed the Nepean Powerboat and Ski Club in their bid to set a world-record water-ski speed on their local river bank. Commodore of the Club, Lloyd Wood, was certain that the 1963 Ampol 100 miles trial that was to be held in January that year would be the chance to beat the 68 mph Australian record set in 1951. What they needed was boats with the

necessary speed to carry a driver, observer and two skiers – and Mr Wood said out of the 25 boats in the trial, there were at least three of them. However, the race and attempts at a world record were threatened, after heavy rain battered western Sydney and caused the Nepean River to swell. Just a week before the event, the river was cleared by authorities in the Penrith district, including Mr Wood. Mr Wood said clubs competing in the event had boats powerful enough to handle the speed of the raging river, and that the height of the river would not affect the ability to ski. The river peaked at eight feet four inches and was on its way down, but there were still concerns over floating debris and the safety of skiers. When the day finally came, water skier

Charles ‘Chicko’ Courtney set the Australian record. However, he set a record of 57.8 mph, almost 10 mph slower than the perceived previous Australian record. It turns out, the 68 mph Australian record thought to have been set 11 years earlier was declared an unofficial record by the NSW Water-ski Association. There were also attempts made to beat the 102 mph world record on the day, but there was no boat powerful enough from the Sydney area that could get close. Today, the world record speed for water skiing has been smashed, with a Mexican man clocking up 153 mph barefoot, when he was towed behind a helicopter. Today, the Nepean River continues to be an aquatic playground enjoyed by the Penrith community as well as those from outside the area.

Remember when... It’s hard to imagine that this is what Penrith Railway Station looked like back in 1863. It was officially opened on January 19 of that year, as the end of the Main Western Line when it was extended from St Marys. It was like this until 1867, when the line extended to Springwood.

It was an emotional time in our May 29, 2015 edition of the Weekender. We touched the hearts of the community and told the heartbreaking story of a brave little boy who was fighting for his life, ‘Spider-Man Jake’. Jake was just four-years-old and had a heart deformity since birth, and spent his short life in and out of hospital. In a terrible and devastating outcome, Jake lost his fight on October 28, 2015. Further inside the paper, we had the never-ending story of parking trouble at Penrith Station, after 80 parking spaces were closed from the public with no consultation. Penrith Council and Connect Infrastructure passed the buck back and forth as to whose responsibility it was to tell the community of the closure. Nepean Hospital banned smoking on its premises, and allowed hospital staff to issue fines of $300 to those caught in the act. Other institutions in the area joined the movement, including Western Sydney Institute of TAFE, Penrith Council, and Western Sydney University. The Panthers were set to face the Eels at Pepper Stadium in the annual ‘Battle of the West’ match.

A

fter months of speculation, mock line-ups and, of course, all those leaked teams, NSW Blues fans finally learned the names of the men who will look to steal back State of Origin glory from those pesky Queenslanders, beginning in Sydney this Wednesday night. NSW coach Laurie Daley unveiled a 19-man Blues line-up at The Star Casino on Monday morning, which included five fresh new faces who will make their Origin debuts at ANZ Stadium next week. After being hammered in the 2015 series decider 52-6, Daley and his panel of selectors were left with no choice but to make some much-needed changes, with a look to the future also in mind. Among the new faces to line-up for the

Blues in Origin I – Penrith captain Matt Moylan and winger Josh Mansour, boom Dragons forward Tyson Frizell, Rabbitohs premiership-winning halfback Adam Reynolds and versatile Manly recruit Dylan Walker. Speaking at the Blues squad announcement on Monday afternoon, NSW Origin captain Paul Gallen admitted he wasn’t surprised to see so many new faces wearing the Blues attire. “I’m not surprised at all, I thought there would always be changes, there was no doubt about that,” he said. “The boys who have been picked as debutants have been playing very well at club level, and I don’t think anyone could say that they don’t deserve their shot.” Gallen admitted that the beating the Blues were handed at Suncorp Stadium in Game 3 last year was the catalyst for a raft of changes which saw Origin stalwarts Mitchell Pearce, Ryan Hoffman, Beau Scott and Trent Merrin all get the chop. “We’re not hiding from the fact we were

embarrassed up there but there were always going to be changes,” he said. “It’s shame those guys aren’t here, the majority of them were part of the winning 2014 series, they were terrific guys and a great part of our team.” NSW coach Laurie Daley echoed his skipper’s comments on moving forward with some new ‘blue blood’. “That’s the difficult part of the job because you become so close to them… it’s always hard but they cop it on the chin and have to keep working hard in case the opportunity to play Origin presents itself again,” he said. NSW will go into Origin I with a new fullback in Matt Moylan, halves pairing in James Maloney and Adam Reynolds, and an updated backline featuring powerhouse winger Josh Mansour on the wing and Josh Dugan in the centres. The Blues will also unleash a strong and dynamic forward pack, buoyed by the Origin return of Greg Bird and the debut of Tyson Frizell.

Returning for the Maroons are all the familiar, champion faces like Thurston, Cronk, Inglis, Boyd, Smith and Parker along with two newcomers in winger Corey Oates and centre Justin O’Neill. Origin I is always a close battle that goes right down to wire – take last year’s 11-10 win to Queensland for example. I think if the NSW debutants can overcome their nerves early, they’ll out-enthuse Queensland to victory. Tip: NSW by 7.

PANTHER RUMBLINGS with the Masked Panther

VALUE INCREASES » I’m hearing that the Office of Liquor,

Gaming and Racing has finished looking into the sudden departure of former Panthers Group CEO Warren Wilson, with no action likely. The Panthers have swiftly moved on from the Wilson era at the club, with Brian Fletcher and Corey Payne now looking after things at an executive level.

» There is no question that Josh Man-

sour’s selection in the New South Wales State of Origin team this week will increase his value in the market. The Panthers have tabled an offer to the offcontract star but it appears Mansour was waiting until the Origin team was picked before deciding to take it up, or head back to the negotiation table. I’m tipping it’ll be back to negotiations, but the Panthers should win the race for his signature – they’re very keen to retain him.

» Terrible news for centre Peta Hiku with

his season over following an ACL injury against the Titans last Sunday. Hiku was stretchered from the field early in the second half and was clearly in considerable pain. Unfortunately, he wasn’t the only injury out of the loss to the Titans with James Fisher-Harris suffering a broken thumb. Hiku’s injury most likely opens the door for the return of Waqa Blake to first grade.

» Joel Romelo, who made a cameo ap-

pearance with the Panthers during the 2009 NRL season, is back playing football again. His life took a turn for the worse when he was jailed on drugs charges, but the 27-year-old is now playing footy in Darwin. Romelo was seen as a potential representative player but his career never really got started. He played three games for the Panthers in 2009 before joining

the Bulldogs, where he played 23 games over four seasons. He then played two matches for Melbourne in 2014 before disappearing from the NRL scene.

» Anyone who follows Jamie Soward on social media knows how much he loves his girlfriend Madi (he tells us regularly, in case we forget). Apparently Madi has scored even more brownie points by surprising Sowie with a trip to Boston, the home of his beloved Boston Celtics. He’s heading to the US for a holiday in October.

» The Panthers last week confirmed the

signing of forward Chris Grevsmuhl until the end of the 2018 season. Grevsmuhl, 23, has linked up with the Panthers after obtaining a release from the final year of his contact with the South Sydney Rabbitohs. “I’m excited to join the Panthers and can’t wait to pull the boots on and get started,” Grevsmuhl said. “The Panthers have developed a very strong team that never gives in and that’s what I’m most excited about. The chance to train at the Panthers Rugby League Academy and improve my game with the coaching staff here is a great opportunity for me.”

» Phil Gould rarely speaks about Ben

Alexander’s 1992 car accident and the impact the youngster’s death had on the club, the community and him personally. But in a brilliant interview with the Sydney Morning Herald’s Andrew Webster last weekend, Gus spoke openly about the crash that tore Penrith apart. “Every time I drive to Penrith I think about it,” Gould said. “That part of my life was extremely difficult. I think about it every day to be honest. It’s hard to talk about those days because we went from the

highs to the lows very quickly. We won the club’s first ever premiership then lost a special person in Ben in tragic circumstances the very next year. I loved Ben. I was very close to Ben. The damage it did to everyone at Penrith, not just his family and close friends, was enormous.”

» Greg Bird had the last laugh last week-

end after the Titans defeated the Panthers 28-24, but it was certainly a tense afternoon for the Blues star. He was booed by the Panthers’ faithful as he left the field for a concussion test just prior to halftime, and shared what appeared to be a few nasty words with ground announcer Scott McRae on his way into the sheds.

» Panthers coach Anthony Griffin was

short but strong with his assessment of last Sunday’s performance against the Titans. “I’m disappointed. We let ourselves down, we let our members and fans down. It’s not what we’re about,” he said.

» Things got a little murky for Panthers

hooker James Segeyaro this week with revelations that he joined Corey Norman and Junior Paulo in dining out with a former Nomad bikie and an accused criminal before Norman was allegedly caught in possession of unknown pills last Friday night. hen Matt Moylan’s name was read out as a member of Laurie Daley’s NSW Blues squad on Monday morning, it was almost a year to the day that the popular Penrith fullback went down with a season-ending injury. Last year Moylan’s name was also tossed around in the Origin ring as a bolter for the 2015 series but the ankle injury he suffered against the Eels in Round 12 ruined any chance of him taking part. But a year is a long time in footy. After a slow start to the season with a troublesome back injury, the Panthers captain and St Clair Comets junior found

form, is fit and firing again, and ready to take on his greatest challenge. “Playing footy growing up you want to play at the highest level and, to have that opportunity this week and the challenge ahead, I’m very excited about. It’s going to be an honour to pull on the sky blue jersey on Wednesday,” Moylan said. Like Panthers teammate and fellow Blues debutant Josh Mansour, Moylan received a call from Penrith’s football manager on Sunday night to let him in on the good news. Despite what looked to be some apparent nerves during Penrith’s heartbreaking loss to the Titans on Sunday afternoon, Moylan said he hasn’t been thinking about his impending Origin selection. “Personally, no, if you read into all the speculation and let it get to you, it’s probably going to affect your performance,” he said.

Penrith captain Matt Moylan fronts the media on Monday. Photo: Melinda Jane “To get out there and play a good game you’ve just got to do what you normally do and let that talk and speculation go by. “I think you’ve just got to go out there and put your best foot forward and the rest is in the selectors’ hands.” Moylan is one of five new faces to be chosen in the NSW team for the Origin opener at ANZ Stadium with a number

of familiar names of Origins past including Beau Scott, Ryan Hoffman, Mitchell Pearce and Penrith’s Trent Merrin given the flick to accommodate the new blood. Moylan said he’s expecting to get a lot out of his first Origin experience. “There’s a few new faces and that’s going to bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the squad,” he said.

I Long time

coming

t wasn’t that long ago that Josh Mansour and Panthers teammate Matt Moylan were a bunch of unknowns, playing park footy with the Windsor Wolves in front of virtually no one. In less than a week, the Penrith pair will pull on the famous sky blue jumper for the very first time, and be greeted by 80,000 screaming fans in rugby league’s greatest arena. Speaking with Extra Time at Monday’s NSW Blues Origin announcement, 26-year-old Mansour reminisced at just how far he and fellow ‘wolf pack’ member Matt Moylan had come in just a few short years. “I’ve shared a long journey with Matty… we started out at the Windsor Wolves and pretty much made our NRL debuts together, and now we are here,” he said in disbelief. “It’s been an unbelievable ride and I’m very excited to be a part of it all with him.” Mansour’s name had been tossed around in mock Origin squads for years but he has always remained just out of calculations. After enduring an uphill battle with injury in 2015, Mansour came out on top and, last Sunday night, heard the words he’d been dreaming of for so long – “Sauce, you’ve made Origin”. Upon hearing those four words from

Penrith’s football manager on his way home from Pepper Stadium, the powerhouse winger couldn’t wait to tell his mum and of course his fiancé, Daniella. “It was a bit of a mood changer, that’s for sure,” Mansour admitted. “Obviously I was disappointed with the loss against the Titans on the bell – that really hurt – but when I got that call on the way home, that brought my mood back up.” Mansour will turn 26 during the Origin series and admits he’s pumped for what’s ahead. “It’s so surreal… it’s been a massive achievement for myself and I’m definitely very excited,” he said. “I can’t wait to get into Origin camp with the boys and be part of this brotherhood.” After not missing a single Origin series on television as a kid, the soon-to-be Blues debutant expressed his excitement at finally being able to experience the legend that is State of Origin footy for himself. “It’s the pinnacle of rugby league and I think the physicality of the game really excites me,” he said. “I think that’s one of my strengths and I can’t wait to just run out there and get amongst it.” Mansour will partner ex-teammate and best friend Michael Jennings in Laurie Daley’s new-look Blues backline that also features fellow newcomer Matt Moylan and former bad boys Josh Dugan and Blake Ferguson. Mansour has previously represented both Australia and Lebanon.

THE DREW REVIEW

with Brad Drew

SHOW YOUR BLUE PRIDE The New South Wales Blues have announced their team for the opening game of the 2016 State of Origin series, and as anticipated, there were a number of new faces selected in the side to face off against the Maroons next Wednesday night at ANZ Stadium. For what seems like months, the makeup of Laurie’s Daley’s side has been speculated upon, and unlike previous

years, there were very few guaranteed selections. Matt Moylan won out in the battle of the number ones holding off incredibly strong competition from the Cowboys’ Lachlan Coote. Josh Mansour secured a spot on the wing, Dylan Walker takes up a position on the bench as a utility player, whilst Adam Reynolds will wear the coveted number 7 jersey for the first time.

In regards to tactics, coach Daley has opted to go with size and power on his bench and it would appear that he has laid out the challenge to the Maroons forward pack and, along with Paul Gallen declaring that this year’s series will be his last, I believe NSW have got the team to get the job done. While there are certainly a number of players who have been extremely

unlucky not to be selected for the opening game and, yes, we all have our own opinions on who should and shouldn’t have been selected for the Blues, it is now time to put our thoughts to one side and get behind our state to secure a victory in Origin I of the 2016 series. So buy some beer over the weekend, order the pizzas early Wednesday afternoon and sit back and enjoy the game!

What a whirlwind my first couple of weeks have been since officially joining the Panthers! I am thoroughly enjoying immersing myself in the community, meeting our members, sponsors and stakeholders, and getting as much feedback as possible. I want to know what the Panthers do well and in what areas the club can improve. I met many of you at Sunday’s game against the Titans, and at the postmatch fan function in TCs Sports Bar, and I thank you all for your ideas and suggestions. Hopefully you noticed some of the little changes that have already been implemented on game day such as the red carpet members-only entrance, members cash giveaway and the launch of our Random Acts of Membership programme. Moving forward we will continue to build on these concepts as we look to

reward our loyal Panthers members and show our appreciation. I can reveal that the Panthers will be launching an exciting membership initiative in the next week or so. Our focus will be on turning Panthers fans, even those who only attend a handful of games, into Panthers members. There will be some fantastic rewards for existing members who get involved and encourage their friends and family to sign up – so stay tuned! Finally I want to take this opportunity to congratulate our skipper Matt Moylan and metre-eater Josh Mansour on their inclusion in the NSW Origin squad. Their selection is another fine example of the strength of the Panthers development programme. Best wishes to Moyza and Sauce who I am certain will do themselves, their families and the Panthers proud when they run out for the Blues. Corey Payne, Panther 33102

LOWER GRADES » Intrust Super Premiership NSW: The

Penrith Panthers reserve grade team welcomed in a number of new faces last week before earning a much-needed victory to re-ignite their 2016 campaign. Following a number of weeks of defeat, Panthers coach Steve Georgallis unleashed three of Penrith’s top Holden Cup talents to make their ISP debuts during last Friday night’s Round 11 encounter against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. Junior Kangaroos Nathan Cleary, Tyrone May and Dylan Edwards were given their first real test against men and didn’t disappoint, with each playing a crucial role in Penrith’s thrilling 16-12 win at Belmore Oval. As Penrith’s youngsters settled into the game, Canterbury were the only team to score in the first half and lead at the break 6-0. When players hit the field for the second half it was the Panthers who got on the board next after George Jennings received a great ball via Nathan Cleary to score his first try of the night. Soon after the Panthers struck once again through Corey Harawira-Naera, who swooped on an idle ball to score. With Penrith narrowly ahead 10-6, Jennings extended Penrith’s lead by six more points after he scored his second try of the evening via Will Smith. Canterbury made things close in the end with a late try but the Panthers managed to hang on for their first win in more than a month. The Panthers have a bye this weekend.

» Holden Cup: The Penrith Panthers

endured an almighty scare last Saturday afternoon following a tight 28-24 win over the Gold Coast Titans at Pepper Stadium. Penrith’s 10th straight victory was an important one in the scheme of things as they did it without Nathan Cleary, Dylan Edwards and Tyrone May, who made their ISP debuts just days prior. Instead coach Cameron Ciraldo unleashed a number of new kids into the fold to make their Holden Cup debuts. Penrith got off to a very slow start and were trailing the Titans 18-6 at halftime. However the second half was a much different story for the home side, who scored the next four tries unanswered to take the lead late in the game 28-18. Gold Coast made it interesting with a four-pointer close to full-time but the Panthers managed to hang on to reward the large home crowd. Tryscorers for the Panthers included Daniel Brown who bagged a double, Jack Hetherington, Corey Waddell and Christian Chrichton. Jarome Luai kicked four from five.

» Ron Massey Cup: St Marys are back in

the winner’s circle following a 34-22 victory over the Concord-Burwood Wolves last weekend. St Marys were up 22-8 at half-time before the Wolves made a real game of it in the second half. Luckily for Brad Drew’s men, the Saints managed to hang on for a much-needed victory.

ENTERTAINMENT PENRITH’S BIGGEST AND BEST LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE

We’re still rocking with The Angels

A KATE REID

ustralia has had a love affair with rockers The Angels for more than 40 years. But with the band’s rebirth in the last five years – which features two new albums and three new members, including lead singer and Screaming Jets frontman Dave Gleeson – it seems The Angels are also winning over a younger generation, abroad as well as at home.

Guitarist Rick Brewster, one of the band’s founding members, was overwhelmed by the positive reception they received on last year’s European tour. “We did a London show which was great, and there were a lot of young members in the audience,” he said. “The Paris show went off in a huge way too. The audience, who were singing the guitar solos, were actually louder than the band – I’ve never experienced that before.” The Angels are hoping for a similarly warm welcome when they head out on the road for their Hardwired Tour this July, which will kick off at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, July 1.

The band will be joined by New Zealander rockers Mi-Sex, who reformed in 2011 with ex-Noiseworks member Steve Balbi taking on the role of frontman. The Angels and Mi-Sex have run in the same musical crowd since the early days, and Rick admits they’re keen to get on the road, not just for the music but also for the camaraderie. “When you’re touring it really helps if they’re a good bunch of guys, which they are,” he said. While his passion for the classic tracks may have waxed and waned at various points over the decades, for Rick the last five years with Dave at the helm have brought a new sense of life to the band.

“I’m not going to pretend that there haven’t been gigs or even periods of touring where I’ve felt like I was just going through the motions, or the band was going through the motions, that does happen but it hasn’t happened in the last five years,” he said. Though the familiar pull of new melodies is never far from their mind, for the time being the band’s primary focus is on their upcoming tour. The Angels and Mi-Sex will be performing at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, July 1 at 8pm. Tickets are $45. For more information or to purchase tickets to the concert, visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au or call 9677 4916.

inemakers can be a charismatic lot, and one whose charisma never fails to transfer through into his wines is Wolf Blass – born in Germany in 1934, coming to Australia in 1961, diving straight into work with several local wineries, and amazingly just five years later launching Wolf Blass Wines in 1966. Forever ready to push winemaking boundaries, Wolf quickly made a name for himself, and 50 years on his successor winemakers at Wolf Blass Wines uphold his philosophy, including more recently launching a new label called Blass by Wolf Blass that includes a mostrewarding Blass Noir Adelaide Hills Chardonnay 2015. Crafted from fruit off low-yielding vineyards, it’s also the result of a vintage that began with good winter rains, an unseasonably dry spring, and a summer and autumn highlighted by warm days, cool nights and without the Adelaide Hills’ normally characteristic autumn rains. And which has all come together as one of those charismatic Blass wines, a Chardonnay wonderfully rich and elegant with white peach and melon flavours, subtly integrated French oak, a beautifully creamy texture and a long and balanced finish. Pay $35 and enjoy with hot smoked salmon with blinis and chive crème fraiche. One to note: When they released their 2013 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, Rymill described it as “everything you would want to see in a Coonawarra Cabernet”. And according to winemaker Sandrine Gimon it was all because of a vintage she reckons “was one to get excited about”. With its vibrant blackcurrant and blueberry fruit flavours and suggestions of dark chocolate, pay $32 and match with a roast rib-eye and baked vegies (pictured).

The Revenant

Rated MA // KATE REID It’s the film that finally nabbed Leo that elusive Oscar, and now audiences can experience the star’s award winning performance with the release of ‘The Revenant’ on DVD and Blu-ray. ‘The Revenant’ tells the story of explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo Dicaprio) who’s attacked by a bear in the wilderness and left for dead by John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy), a member of his hunting team. In this epic adventure, Hugh must battle the elements, and the brutal and uncharted winter terrain, to survive against seemingly insurmountable odds. ‘The Revenant’ was inspired by true events and is based on Michael Punke’s novel of the same name.

BOOK

Critics have praised the film on movie review site Rotten Tomatoes for its absorbing drama, visual beauty and a committed performance from its charismatic lead actor. While critics gave ‘The Revenant’ the thumbs up, general moviegoers weren’t as kind complaining the film was too long and drawn out. ‘The Revenant’ received three Academy Awards for Best Cinematography, Best Director and Best Actor. The film was directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, who is best known for his films ‘21 Grams’ and the 2014 critical hit ‘Birdman’. Brutal, captivating and visually stunning, this is a movie that no serious film buff will want to miss.

Ê Foxtel has confirmed new local series ‘The Real Housewives of Sydney’ is on the way. After the success of the Melbourne version it comes as no surprise that the hit franchise wanted a Sydney equivalent as well. Casting is already underway with the show expected to debut in 2017. A ‘Real Housewives of Auckland’ was also confirmed to be in production.

Taylor TV NEWS

Ê Channel Ten are already on the hunt for contestants for next year’s offering of ‘MasterChef Australia’. If you’re interested you must be available for approximately 30 weeks of filming from October 2016 to May 2017. Rules and eligibility are comprehensive, including that all contestants must be amateurs. For more information and to apply visit www. castasugar.com/casting-now/masterchef.

OFFSPRING COMING SOON CHANNEL TEN

Ê Ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Channel Seven will launch ‘Road to Rio’, a live weekly half hour panel show every Saturday. Special guests and experts include Bruce McAvaney, Lauren Jackson, Phil Liggett, Steve Hooker, Andrew Gaze, Drew Ginn and Tamsyn Lewis. A rotating panel of co-hosts includes Johanna Griggs, Mel McLaughlin, Jim Wilson, Kylie Gillies, Mark Beretta, Ryan Phelan and Giaan Rooney. ‘Road to Rio’ begins this Saturday, May 28 at 12pm.

Ê The final episode of ‘Nashville’ airs tonight (Thursday, May 26) on Foxtel. Producers say they’re still shopping the series around to other networks after ABC in the US gave it the flick. More than 90,000 fans have already signed a petition to save the show, which has struggled in the ratings this year.

Ê

Ê

Channel Ten has confirmed the new season of ‘Offspring’ is not too far away. The forthcoming and highly anticipated sixth season reunites viewers with the Proudmans 18 months on. Baby Zoe is now two-and-a-half years old, and the family are rocked by an event that could be the making or breaking of them. The series stars Asher Keddie.

More well-known shows have been given the chop in the US of late including ‘Castle’, ‘Muppets’, ‘Galavant’, ‘Bordertown’, ‘Agent Carter’, ‘The Mysteries of Laura’, ‘Limitless’, ‘House of Lies’, ‘The Grinder’ and ‘Grandfathered’. Both Rob Lowe’s ‘The Grinder’ and John Stamos’ ‘Grandfathered’ were due to air on Ten soon but that now appears uncertain.

Ê Among all the bad news comes some good news with a few shows given the green light for new seasons. New US procedural ‘Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders’ has been renewed for a second season along with Matthew Perry sitcom ‘The Odd Couple’. Salvos set to come knocking this weekend Red Shield Doorknock Appeal

Penrith residents still have time to put their names down for this weekend’s Red Shield Doorknock with The Salvation Army. Powerful statistics show in a typical week The Salvation Army provides 100,000 meals for the hungry, 2,000 beds for the homeless, distributes up to 8,000 food vouchers and provides refuge for 500 victims of abuse. The target for this year’s Doorknock is $8 million, and it will run on Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29. Major Bruce Harmer said it is deeply disturbing to see many families facing tough times. “Being a part of Australia’s biggest Doorknock Appeal gives ordinary Aussies a unique chance to be part of something big that has a powerful mission to help others,” he said. “The people who are struggling aren’t just doing it tough, they are doing it extremely tough.” Local residents always give whatever they can during Red Shield Appeal. To register, visit salvos.org.au/get-involved/help-us-fundraise/red-shieldappeal.

FRASER – MEDIUM DINGO MALE- $400

VINCENT – MEDIUM DINGO MALE $400

Fraser is a beautiful 1-year-old Dingo who is shyer and more tentative than some of his brothers, but also less boisterous/less prone to jump up. He is very affectionate with people he knows he can take some time getting to know you and is more wary of taller/larger men than other people. Because of his shy nature it would be great to see him find a home with one of his brothers.

This 1 year old is a very outgoing friendly boy, incredibly peopleorientated and exceptionally cheeky. He loves puzzle toys such as kongs as well as tug of war and would make a great jogging companion. Like all dingoes Vincent is a fantastic climber and digger, and will require a dog enclosure or a secure 6 foot fence with top angling or flat-top extensions.

DINGOES – Fun Facts !!! It is believed that the dingo is descended from the Asian wolf, Canis lupus pallipes. The earliest dingo skeleton found is 3500 years old. it is thought dingoes arrived in Australia between 4600-18,300 years ago. The colour of their coat can determine where the dingo is from, for instance dark brown originates from forest areas and tan/red originates from desert areas.

LIFE & STYLE PENRITH’S MOST RESPECTED LINE-UP OF EXPERTS ARIES

MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

Avoid being insensitive and passing on unsubstantiated information. Clear, careful communication will help improve relations with family and friends, as you get your message out loud and clear. Use your intuition to guide you; look beneath the surface; and discover what’s really going on. You relish your independence and freedom but don’t be a solitary Ram! Saturday night’s New Moon encourages you to find fresh ways to connect with others (both in person and online).

Joanne Madeline

Moore

HOROSCOPES

TAURUS

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Financial matters look confusing, as you underestimate a major expense or waste money via an inappropriate purchase. You could also doubt your ability to follow through with a major project or promise. Just take things one step at a time. And learn to feel secure and strong within, no matter what is happening in the outside world. Be inspired by fellow Taurean, Cate Blanchett “It’s always good to take on things that at first seem bigger than you. Then you just surmount them”.

GEMINI

MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

You’re impatient to make changes but avoid charging in with guns blazing, and don’t underestimate the value of examining people and situations in a careful and considered way. The devil is definitely in the detail as you slow down, don your detective cap, and have a serious secondlook. Saturday’s New Moon’s in Gemini, so it’s the best time of the year to refresh your appearance; update your wardrobe; review your personal beliefs; launch a website or reboot a rickety relationship.

CANCER

JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

Weekly posts at www.BohoAstro.com www.twitter.com/JoMadelineMoore Copyright Joanne Madeline Moore 2016

Avoid the temptation to rush communication and jump to crazy conclusions this week. It will be very easy to over-extend yourself and then find you’ve bitten off more than you can comfortably chew! So re-calibrate your expectations and pace yourself. On the weekend you’ll feel inclined to withdraw into your cosy Crab cave, as the New Moon highlights your contemplation zone. So enjoy solo activities like yoga, meditation or reading.

LEO

JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

You won’t feel particularly confident, energetic or motivated on Thursday, when nebulous Neptune squares the Sun and takes the gas out of your tank. So use the prevailing astro-winds wisely as you wind down, relax and recharge! If you rush projects on Friday then you’ll just have to re-do them later on, so roll up your sleeves and complete tasks properly. When it comes to a child, teenager or friend, it will take plenty of patience to get the relationship back on track again.

VIRGO

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

This week you’re preoccupied with serious issues as you read, write or research. It’s also a terrific time to delve into a mystery, solve a problem or be a detective and find something that’s been missing. But don’t assume you know what others are thinking. If you do make assumptions, then you’ll just complicate and confuse matters even more. Saturday night’s New Moon charges up your career zone, but you won’t get ahead if you worry about minor details.

LIBRA

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

With Saturn reversing through your conversation and travel zone, expect frustrations involving cars, computers or communication. A relationship [or an idea] seems too good to be true on Friday … and then you are brought down to earth with a thud on Saturday. The weekend New Moon activates your travel zone so a heavenly holiday is likely sometime over the next 12 months. Plus take a good long look at your aspirations for the future – are they ambitious enough?

SCORPIO

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Smart Scorpios know that sustainable success doesn’t just drop out of the sky. So this week’s stars are super for utilising every opportunity that comes your way, as you make things happen through consistent hard work, awesome organisation and forensic attention to details. Money matters are also on your mind, as you are hit with extra bills or rising costs. So it’s imperative that you have a strict budget and stick to it.

SAGITTARIUS

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

Rushing a personal project seems like a good idea, but it will just cause problems further down the track. With Saturn reversing through your sign, slow and steady wins the race. And don’t let what’s happened in the past mar relations with others. Strive to approach relationships with a clean slate, an open mind and a generous heart. Attached Archers – it’s time to add some red-hot sizzle to a stalled partnership. Singles – love and foreign countries (or cultures) are linked.

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

Expect some frustrations, delays or challenges this week as Saturn [your patron planet] seems to stymie every move you make. Don’t waste time stressing and worrying! Use the down time to review your approach, revise your ideas and reassess your plans. Plus avoid the temptation to put professional success before love, and work before family. As birthday great Marilyn Monroe observed “A career is wonderful, but you can’t curl up with it on a cold night”.

AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

Money matters will be confusing this week, as nebulous Neptune scrambles your antennae and confuses communication. Don’t accept things at face value. Make sure you fine-tune financial figures, double-check paperwork and [if in doubt] get a second opinion. The weekend New Moon signals it’s the perfect time to build bridges with a child or teenager; initiate a new friendship; start a challenging sport; or take up a hobby you’ve always been interested in.

PISCES

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

The focus is on family matters as the planets highlight your home zone. But it will be very easy to misconstrue what others say so don’t hesitate to ask for some clarification. And are you viewing a romantic relationship through ridiculously rose-coloured glasses? The higher you place your partner on a pedestal, the further they have to fall. Learn to love them, faults and all. Saturn sends a reality check, so get your head out of the clouds.

RELIGION

It’s funny how we sometimes get the wrong impression about things. In Jesus’ time here on Earth, crowds of people followed him wherever he went. In that day, because children were often considered as unimportant, some of Jesus’ followers thought that someone as important as Jesus would not have time for children. We see this on one occasion in the Bible’s book of Mark where people were bringing little children to Jesus to have him bless and pray for them. Mark tells us how Jesus’

Don’t get the wrong impression

www.glenmorepark anglican.com.au and on Facebook

disciples shooed the children away. Yet Mark tells how Jesus “was indignant” saying, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Jesus continued, “I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”

Jesus, then taking the children in his arms, blessed and prayed for them. Clearly, Jesus thinks children are important, but what does Jesus mean when he says to be “like a child?” Just as in the 1st Century world, today, children are completely dependent on parents. A little child simply cannot survive without the love, direction, care, support, protection and provision of a parent. And this is exactly Jesus’ point in comparing our relationship with God. Sadly, many people try to live independently of God, but having done so, we cut ourselves off from His love, direction, care, support, protection and provision. It is the testimony of millions of Christian people throughout the centuries that depending on God, rather than being a burden, has actually been a source of life, strength and hope. May you know this joy as well.

Australia is one of the highest users of smart phones and tablets in the world, so it’s no surprise consumers are embracing mobile banking to manage their finances. While there are many benefits to banking on your smart phone or tablet, it’s important to take the same online safety precautions as you would when banking on your home computer or laptop. Here are some tips to help you practice safe and secure mobile banking: • Install security software from a verified provider on your device.

Kate

Reid NUTRITION

There’s a nutrition myth that’s popped up again in the media this week. Claims have been made that the Australian Dietary Guidelines are the reason for our increasingly poor health and wellbeing. The people who tout this myth are ignoring one glaringly obvious issue; as a population we don’t follow the guidelines. Only five per cent of us are meeting the requirements for the recommended daily fruit and vegetable intake; which is the food group that should make up the largest portion

The myth that just doesn’t make sense Kate Reid is a journalist and university qualified Nutritionist with a Bachelor of Science (Nutrition) degree from the University of Wollongong. kate.reid@ westernweekender. com.au @kate_reid6

of our diets. When it comes to grains the guidelines advise the consumption of wholegrain varieties, yet our trolleys are overflowing with highly refined and heavily processed carbohydrates. The guidelines also recommend limiting salt and added sugar, something that features heavily on our takeaway menus and in our

confectionery aisles. The Australian Dietary Guidelines were updated as recently as 2013, and are based on the findings of more than 55,000 studies. As the saying goes you can find a study to prove anything, which is why the advice given is based on such a large body of research, not just a handful of cherry picked studies. I can guarantee you that eating a diet that includes plenty of vegetables, fruits, legumes and wholegrains; moderate amounts of lean protein, dairy and healthy unsaturated fats; and the occasional treat is not the reason why obesity, heart disease and type 2 diabetes are on the rise. By focusing on these myths we are missing the real source of the problem, over-consumption of highly processed, nutrient void foods. If we focused our attention on encouraging people to eat more vegetables, fruit and wholegrains; reduce their consumption of ‘junk’ foods, and engage in more physical activity, we might actually have an impact on the rise in lifestyle disease rates. Myths like this just detract us from making real progress when it comes to improving the health of our nation. See you next week!

SPECIAL FEATURE HEALTH AND WELLBEING sthma can happen at any stage of life, but is particularly common in children and the elderly. It is a condition that causes sensitivity in the lungs. The common symptoms of asthma are: coughing, mucus, tight chest and shortness of breath. Certain triggers can cause the airways to narrow, which makes it hard to breathe. Some examples of triggers are: colds, exercise, pollens, mould, food, fur, dust, smoke, and some medication. It is hard to work out which triggers affect people. Medications There are two types: preventers and relievers. Relievers: The main ones are ventolin, asmol and bricanyl. These are designed to ‘relieve’ your symptoms during an asthma attack. If you regularly use a reliever more than three times a week then you need to speak to your GP. The GP will assess if you need to use a preventer. Preventers: These are to be used daily to ‘prevent’ an asthma attack. They reduce the amount and severity of asthma attacks. Spacers should be used wherever possible with preventers and relievers. They increase the amount of medication going to the lungs. What you can do 1. Speak to your GP and organise an asthma management plan. The plan should include a four part asthma emergency guide. 2. Monitor your asthma – use a peak flow meter to keep track of your lungs. It will often pick up an asthma

attack before you develop symptoms. Ask your pharmacist to explain. 3. Use a spacer with your inhalers. 4. Breathing exercise – speak to a Buteyko breathing course consultant. 5. Stay active and healthy. 6. Develop a warm up and cool down plan for sport – particularly for exercise induced asthma. Speak to a health professional or Asthma Australia.

7. Avoid triggers – asthma is related to other allergic conditions. Allergy testing can identify any potential triggers. 8. Take vitamins – Vitamin C, fish oil and gingko biloba help control the airways. Speak to a naturopath for further information. If you have any questions on asthma please contact your pharmacist, GP or Asthma Australia.

et ready to get out the fluffy jumpers and daggy long pants. It doesn’t feel like it just yet but winter is about to hit before you know it. The cold days are notorious for making it more difficult to keep fit and active. Here are some tips to stay motivated and keep up the training all year round. Do not stop at any cost! There are numerous benefits to keeping a consistent exercise routine and continuing your fitness goals during the winter. Exercise is great for your mental health and also will help fight off the dreaded winter blues. Now is the ideal time to start losing fat as your metabolism is about to start speeding you up to keep

G

you warm. Keep moving throughout and you will also be one step ahead of the pack when the warmer months start. Keep in mind summer bodies are built in winter. Don’t let the cold cancel your routine! Illness is a common setback during winter. One of the many benefits of regular exercise is a healthy and resilient immune system. This means you are less likely to get sick in the first place and if you do get sick then you will recover quicker. Get out and get active and you will be better off. If you are feeling flat in the first place, then you might be better off trying a low intensity class at your gym like Yoga or Pilates.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Switch it up! If you love the outdoors then winter can be really challenging at times to keep exercising. It might be worthwhile looking into joining a fitness centre and using the variety of cardio and resistance equipment in a controlled environment. You can look at trying a new aerobics class or even get some guidance from a personal trainer. If you do need more advice or training tips then be sure to consult your local health professional or health and fitness centre. They can help you stay on track and keep working hard all through winter.

PARMESAN GARLIC PULL APART BREAD

Makes 6 servings Ingredients • 1 Bakers Delight Authentic Mixed Seed Sourdough Vienna • 100g parmesan cheese, grated • 100g unsalted butted, melted • 2 garlic cloves, minced • 1 heaped tbsp parsley, finely chopped • A pinch of salt Method 1. Preheat over to 180C (160C fan forced). 2. Mix melted butter with garlic and parsley and set aside.

RAJESH AWASTHI FROM BAKERS DELIGHT

3. Using a bread knife, cut the loaf diagonally at 2cm intervals. Cut about half way through the loaf but not all the way.

Suburb: Glenmore Park Occupation: Owner and Baker

4. Turn the bread around and repeat, so the top of the bread looks like its covered in diamond shapes.

Qualities someone would need for your job: One must have a good knowledge about the product and good knowledge on how to be a good manager and create a wonderful working environment. Customer service is also a priority to gain loyal customers in return for quality bread.

5. Using your fingers, spread the butter into each crack of the read as best you can, and stuff with the grated parmesan.

How long have you been in this job? I have been a baker for 20 years since 1987 and a business owner since 2009.

6. Wrap with foil and bake for 15 minutes, or until the cheese is mostly melted.

Hobbies: Watching cricket, helping charities and spending quality time with family.

7.

Unwrap and bake for a further 5 minutes to make the outside crusty. Serve immediatey.

WANDERERS

Marshal Ndebele in action for the Penrith Panthers Division 2 Youth League Men’s team. Photo: Noel Rowsell (www.photoexcellence.com.au) NATHAN TAYLOR

enrith Youth League basketballer Marshal Ndebele was always overlooked by the system. He never made state teams and was never told he would one day make it. But despite all this, the 18-year-old Ropes Crossing resident knew he had the talent, the ability and the motivation to prove the ‘system’ wrong. So instead of kicking stones, the 195cm guard took it upon himself to make something of his basketball talent and try and

P

earn selection into a US college team. “I spend a lot of time on my own so I just sat down and started researching how I was going to get there myself,” he said. “I never had a system where people told me I’d make it, it was just me believing I’d make it and that pushed me to start thinking how I was going to get there.” Whilst on his fact finding mission, Ndebele discovered the best way to get exposed to American college coaches was via AUSA Hoops – an Australian program which builds pathways for Aussies to play college basketball. “When I finally made the AUSA team I

worked with its founder and ex-college basketballer Rhys Murphy for nine months to get me ready for the whirlwind AAU circuit,” Ndebele said. Upon arriving in the US last month, Ndebele was taken aback at just how competitive and challenging it was to catch the eye of college coaches. “The environment was unlike anything in Australia. In my first game there were a lot of coaches around and a massive crowd, which was much different to playing in front of parents and a smattering of friends back home,” he said. “But my coaches told me to focus and

leave everything I had out on the court.” Those wise words of motivation proved pivotal for Ndebele who, after just the first day of the tournament, received interest from Californian community college Barstow. “I got an email from Barstow coach Gerry Wright who went through the reasons why he chose me and said that Barstow was a great place for me to start,” Ndebele said. Ndebele accepted Wright’s offer and next January will move to the US to begin his two-year college scholarship that he hopes will lead to bigger opportunities.

Upgrades prove a winner for local sport Six local sporting facilities upgraded to provide a better experience for athletes of all ages NATHAN TAYLOR

ix popular sporting facilities in the local area have received much needed upgrades, thanks to a jointly funded partnership between the Federal Government’s Community Development Grants Program and Penrith City Council. Hunter Fields in Emu Plains received a lighting upgrade; Jamison Park in South Penrith received a new shade structure and canteen upgrade; Andromeda Drive Reserve in Cranebrook received a playing surface and drainage upgrade; Greygums Reserve in Cranebrook received a surface upgrade and awning installation; Andrews Road Baseball Complex in Cranebrook received a new safety fence and seating; and Hickeys Park in Penrith received a playing surface upgrade. Penrith Mayor, Karen McKeown, said upgrades to the six different venues around the Penrith LGA was a great benefit to the sporting community. “These sporting fields attract thousands of visitors to the city each year,” she said. “The new upgrades, including the seating at Andrews Road Baseball Complex and shade awning at Greygums Reserve,

to officially announce the opening of the six upgraded facilities. The Federal Government provided over $250,000 towards the six projects through the Community Development Grants Program. Penrith Rams Chairman, Greg Corless, said the upgrades at Greygums Reserve

will be of huge benefit to his club. “The upgraded fields allows us to have an extra training surface because the previous surface was pretty ordinary,” he said. “We’ve pushing for these upgrades for a while and, to have it all done, I’m very happy.”

Football New coach to guide W-League squad for upcoming season NATHAN TAYLOR

New Western Sydney Wanderers W-League coach Rich Byrne

he Western Sydney Wanderers have announced Rich Byrne as the club’s new W-League coach for the upcoming 2016/17 season. With experience in Australia, New Zealand and the UK, Byrne has worked with players and teams from grassroots football all the way up to the professional level. A former assistant coach at National Youth League level and with the Australian Paralympic football team, Byrne’s most recent job was with the NSW Girls State team, which he led at the National Championships. Byrne will bring a wealth of experience and versatility to the Wanderers having worked extensively with women, men, girls and boys in his career. Byrne said the opportunity to coach at the Wanderers was too good to refuse. “Joining the Wanderers is a fantastic opportunity: it’s a big club, an exciting job and it’s great to be working in an area of Sydney that’s passionate about football and where expectations are high,” he said. Byrne explained that the Wanderers’ one-club philosophy was a big reason in him joining the club.

“The Wanderers have a great model where every team is important, from the U13s to the first team. There is a family and community vibe here so we’ll make sure that continues in the Westfield W-League team,” he said. “Ideally we’ll be playing the same style of football as the Hyundai A-League team. My vision, and the club’s vision, is that we want to see a style of play that the club can be proud of. “Our aspiration is to have the best Westfield W-League team in the country.” Meanwhile, the Wanderers have also announced the return of a fan favourite with goalkeeper Jerrad Tyson returning home for the 2016/17 A-League season. Since last pulling on the gloves for the Wanderers, the 26-year-old spent a season as first-choice keeper with Sun Pegasus in Hong Kong before returning to the A-League with Perth Glory. “This feeling is one of a homecoming; western Sydney is a place I feel really passionate about and somewhere that I feel comfortable. It feels like I’m coming home,” Tyson said. And the Wanderers have signed Steven Lustica on a two year deal. With over 85 A-League caps to his name, the 25-year-old midfielder adds further experience to the team.

lenmore Park teenager Eliza Murphy will miss her Year 12 graduation later this year to fulfil her dream of playing softball for Australia. The 17-year-old St Paul’s Grammar student will jet off to Hawaii this September as a member of the Australian All Schools team, which will compete against a number of American schools in 10 invitational games. While missing her end of year graduation is a big blow for young Eliza, the beautiful surrounds of the Hawaiian islands will no doubt more than make up for it. “When I’m over there it’s actually the time of my graduation, so I’m missing that which is a bit sad but I can’t wait to go to Hawaii, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Eliza said.

The Glenmore Park Phantoms junior and Western Sydney Academy of Sport athlete achieved her lifelong dream of making an Australian squad after an incredible performance for NSW in the recent Australia Schools Softball Championships in Victoria. Eliza’s NSW All Schools Softball team went on to win the coveted National Championship after defeating Queensland 7-2 in the final. Eliza’s name was called out at the conclusion of the tournament. “I’ve missed out on Australian selection before, so it’s really exciting to be named in the team,” Eliza said. “When they were calling out the team I was so nervous because I’ve been working towards selection for so long now. This was the ultimate goal to me. I never thought I’d get there but I finally did.” 15 players were selected in the Australian team bound for Hawaii.
