TROY DODDS Dunheved Road has emerged as a late election issue in Lindsay, with an announcement

by Labor that it would “bring forward funding” to start the massive upgrade raising eyebrows with Liberal MP Melissa McIntosh.

Ms McIntosh contends there is nothing to bring forward and that the full funding is now sitting with Penrith City Council.

Council is undertaking a design and consultation process and expects construction to start in 2023. It’s understood that timeline is unlikely to be moved forward nor is there scope for construction to start earlier.

“It’s Labor having a lend of the community when it comes to Dunheved Road,” Ms McIntosh said this week.

While Council has distanced itself from the back and forth, saying it doesn’t comment on election commitments during a campaign,

Mayor Tricia Hitchen appeared in a Facebook video with Ms McIntosh to confirm the construction timeline and the process.

When asked for more specific detail on its announcement, Labor said via a campaign spokesperson: “We will work in partnership with Penrith City Council to ensure they have the funds available to bring forward expenditure to fix Dunheved Road.”

Push for better access to Council EMILY FESZCZUK

A

discussion over the practices within Penrith City Council meetings has led to a South Ward Councillor wanting more direct avenues for community engagement.

Councillor Sue Day wants to explore the option of opening a public forum to connect with Penrith residents.

At a Policy Review Committee Meeting, Councillors had to vote to adopt a revised Model Code of Meeting Practice, which allowed Councillors to permanently attend meetings remotely.

During the meeting, Councillor Ross Fowler commented that there was a need for the code to have an option to allow the community to be able to express themselves in relation to issues after the General Business item was no longer used in meetings.

Acting Governance Manager Adam Beggs explained that General Business was outlawed as it goes against the requirement to give notice of the business that will be “transacted” on the night.

The public can speak on matters already listed in the business paper or Councillors

can raise an issue through a Notice of Motion, which has to be submitted five working days before a meeting.

With the final option allowing Councillors to raise Urgent Business that is decided by the Mayor if it will be discussed, Cr Day believes trialling more informal public meetings would be beneficial.

“Historically Councillors had the General Business function where you could bring anything to the floor to represent a certain group or issue,” Cr Day said.

“I believe the public used to be able to speak before meetings and I think giving people the opportunity to put in oral submissions to items they are passionate about without having to go through the more complex protocols would be great.”

With the model code going to exhibition for the community before it is discussed further, Cr Day said she will be pursuing the idea.

“It could be meeting in a town hall or neighbourhood centre in each ward where Councillors and Council officers are accessible to the public,” she said.

“All the code of conduct will apply but more informal and an extra level of community engagement, so we can become aware of issues sooner.”

My final verdict on the election O n May 17, 2019 in my pre-election editorial I suggested the Coalition needed a spell in opposition and backed Bill Shorten to be the next Prime Minister.

We all know what happened 24 hours later – the Scott Morrison miracle and the shattered dream for Shorten, who had all but printed his new business cards.

While a Labor government did not eventuate back in 2019, it would appear Anthony Albanese is on track to be the 31st Prime Minister of this great country.

There is no question Morrison’s term has delivered challenges nobody could have possibly foreseen when he declared victory as the clock approached Midnight on that Saturday night three years ago.

The landscape and legacy of his term changed dramatically in the opening months of 2020 when like the rest of the world, Australia found itself in the grips of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Initially, it was almost a political blessing in disguise. Morrison was able to put the bushfire debacle behind him and his initial response to the pandemic garnered widespread praise.

But COVID wasn’t over in the few short months as many originally hoped and there would be no political resets for Morrison, just some of the biggest decisions of the last 70 years.

And it is some of those decisions that I reflect on when thinking about tomorrow’s election.

This government implemented one of the most impressive economic rescue packages in the world, no doubt saving jobs, livelihoods and businesses in the process. You wouldn’t have to walk far down the streets of Penrith and St Marys before you’d find a business owner who confirms they’re still open today because of JobKeeper and the government’s financial assistance during the worst of the pandemic.

We’ve come out of the pandemic with an extraordinarily low unemployment rate (which I’d almost argue is full employment, given how difficult it is for businesses to find staff at present) and in better economic shape than anyone could have considered possible given the circumstances of the last three years.

Somewhere along the line though, it all went sour for Morrison. Any empathy towards him running the country during this extraordinary period has been replaced with anger and disdain.

And the primary criticism seems to come back to two things: his holiday to Hawaii while the bushfires raged, and the vaccine roll-out.

In retrospect I have little doubt Morrison would have come home from Hawaii as soon as he realised the scale of what was unfolding back home.

At the time, he believed the agencies in charge, all falling under the control and management of the State Governments, had it covered. But he should have understood and accepted the optics better, no question. Whether it has deserved the three-year obsession that has followed is another thing altogether.

As for the vaccine roll-out, embedded in that saga is the reality that the government desperately tried to ensure we had access to a locally manufactured vaccine, which would have largely avoided supply issues and much of the international back and forth that ultimately ensued.

That locally manufactured vaccine turned out to be AstraZeneca, and no government could have predicted the media and public fear campaign that would surround it.

Of course, Morrison’s critics will argue there’s much more than bushfires and vaccines on their list of grievances. And so be it, that’s the joy of our democracy and tomorrow they can have their say at the ballot box.

It will be up to Anthony Albanese to prove that Morrison’s critics are right.

I remain unconvinced about Albanese and Labor.

From day one of this election campaign, when he didn’t know the unemployment or cash rate, Albanese has cast doubt over whether he is ready to govern.

Along the way we’ve learned that Albanese has changed his mind on everything from China to border protection. He has failed to prove he has the strength of his convictions.

He’s held multiple ‘correction press conferences’ to clarify what he’s said, even having to be handed notes about a six point NDIS plan he’d been spruiking a day earlier. And no, it’s not a ‘gotcha’ moment, it’s an expectation that he’s across exactly what he’s trying to sell.

I’ve watched every press conference of this campaign from start to finish, and Albanese continues to be flustered, bordering on rude, and lacks way too much detail. It is hard to imagine how he’d handle the added pressures of actually running the country.

Morrison’s campaign has been far from perfect. The belief that a long campaign would suit him has perhaps not turned out to be the case; his appearances particularly over the last fortnight certainly don’t have the spring in the step they did at the start of this ride.

When it comes to voting tomorrow, it’s all about a judgement of the last three years and a look forward to the next.

I believe the Coalition has proven it has the economic smarts and management credentials to win another term.

There probably is an argument for change, and I’m not deluded enough to believe this government has got everything right, I just don’t believe Labor has prosecuted that argument with any real strength or clarity.

Labor’s Dunheved Rd promise unlikely to see work start early TROY DODDS

itting Liberal MP Melissa McIntosh has blasted her Lindsay rival Trevor Ross over an “odd” announcement surrounding the Dunheved Road upgrade.

Labor announced last Friday that it would “bring forward funding” to accelerate construction works on Dunheved Road as part of a $300 million infrastructure package for roads in western Sydney.

But Ms McIntosh contends there is nothing to bring forward – confirming the $127 million in funding has been delivered to Penrith City Council, which is now going through a design and consultation process.

“It’s a Penrith City Council road and that funding has been delivered to Council,” Ms McIntosh told the Weekender.

“It’s quite an odd announcement to fund something that’s already funded.

It’s Labor having a lend of the community when it comes to Dunheved Road.”

Funds for Bill Ball Oval But confusion reigns after dual funding announcements held on same day TROY DODDS

T

he Coalition says it will upgrade Bill Ball Oval at St Marys if it wins the election this weekend – but there’s confusion over the commitment.

Federal Member for Lindsay Melissa McIntosh made the announcement last Friday, committing $1.64 million towards an upgrade.

The upgrades include a new amenities building with two change rooms with showers, accessible toilets, an additional public toilet, officials change room and showers, canteen, storage and a first aid area. A new car park will also be built.

But on the same day, Penrith City Council also announced it was funding a new amenities building in conjunction with the NSW Government through the NSW ICC T20 World Cup 2020 Cricket Legacy Fund, Cricket Australia and Cricket NSW through the Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund, and the Penrith Cricket Club.

There was no mention of the promised federal funding in Council’s announcement, sparking confusion over where the federal funding would go.

Council says it is beginning construction this month.

The Weekender sought clarification from Ms McIntosh and Council but there appears to be no clear answer over exactly what the $1.64 million from the Coalition would pay for given the amenities building is already being replaced by Council.

A new car park is part of Ms McIntosh’s commitment but not part of Council’s upgrade.

Council does not comment on election commitments during a campaign, making clarification over the federal funding difficult. But it appears the work will go ahead regardless of the election result.

More than 12,000 cricket and football players use the Bill Ball Oval including from the Penrith Junior Cricket Association, Penrith Cricket Club and Nepean Football Club.

Ms McIntosh said the new amenities building is a huge win.

“Sport is at the heart of our community and not only will this funding increase access to the Oval, it will also help cater for the growing number of Australians playing sport, including girls and women,” Ms McIntosh said.

Labor accused of ignoring environment in campaign

abor has been accused of “abandoning” the environment in Lindsay as the election closes in.

The Coalition has announced a $400,000 commitment for preservation and regeneration efforts across the Cumberland Conservation Corridor, should it win Saturday’s election.

But Labor has not committed to matching the funding, making it the third straight Federal Election that the party has made no funding commitment to the Corridor.

In contrast the Coalition has committed money at every election since 2007.

“It is clear that Labor has abandoned Lindsay’s environment,” said Geoff Brown, the former President of the Western Sydney Conservation Alliance, who helped develop the concept for the Cumberland Conservation Corridor.

“It is refusing to match a small $400,000 commitment that Melissa McIntosh has made towards preserving the Cumberland Conservation Corridor. This is the third election in a row that Labor has not committed a cent towards protecting Lindsay’s environment. This compares to $13.4 million by the LNP. “Conservationists have been urging Labor to commit funds before the election but they have ignored these pleas.

Labor pre-election no money will be delivered for Lindsay’s environment if Anthony Albanese wins the election.”

Mr Brown said most voters “would find it unbelievable” that the Coalition has committed $13 million towards protecting Lindsay’s environment over the last three elections compared to nothing from Labor. “$400,000 is not a lot of money and it is unbelievable Labor would refuse to at least match the Liberals and demonstrate some concern for our threatened bushland,” he said.

Lindsay Liberal MP Melissa McIntosh said the new $400,000 commitment would further protect and enhance Australia’s unique flora and fauna.

“This funding builds on the local projects the Morrison Government has delivered to benefit the Corridor and better our local natural environment through the Environment Restoration Fund,” Ms McIntosh said.

President of the Cumberland Conservation Corridor, Wayne Olling, said he was appreciative of the commitment.

“Melissa has caught the vision of further natural flora and fauna conservation we have pursued for many years,” Mr Olling said.

A Labor campaign spokesperson pointed to other initiatives, such as the Saving Native Species Program, as evidence of its commitment to environmental issues.

Early voting proves popular

W

hile polling centres will be busy on Saturday afternoon, some six million people have already voted at this year’s Federal Election.

Electoral Commissioner Tom Rogers said the effect of the pandemic on Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) staffing, venues and people’s personal circumstances means that more people need to consider early voting than previous elections.

“Early voting is going incredibly well and with around 550 centres open there

are options available in the coming days for people who need to vote,” Mr Rogers said.

“If you’re busy on Saturday, vulnerable to COVID-19 or aren’t certain of your circumstances then you need to plan an early vote.

“Nearly six million voters have either pre-polled or applied for a postal vote, and many more will need to in the coming days.”

People who are close COVID-19 contacts can attend an early voting centre if they have not tested positive.

ays out from the Federal Election and there’s still no sign of Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese in Lindsay.

Lindsay is traditionally an election battleground and the absence of the Labor leader during the campaign is curious.

Mr Albanese hasn’t been in Lindsay in any official capacity since last year and still hadn’t visited during the campaign at the time the Weekender went to print on Wednesday night.

He was expected to be in Sydney yesterday and today, prompting the possibility of a local visit.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has visited the electorate several times both in the pre-campaign and during the official election campaign, which began last month.

The Coalition has also rolled out several high profile ministers to Lindsay, including outgoing Health Minister Greg Hunt and Treasurer Josh Frydenberg.

But things have been quiet on the Labor front.

While leadership visits are not a given during a campaign they’re seen as a huge show of support to the local candi-

date and add a motivational boost to the campaign and its volunteers.

It would be highly unusual for an Opposition Leader to go through an entire election campaign without visiting Lindsay, traditionally a swing seat that over its history has primarily been held by the government of the day.

Bill Shorten made a memorable visit to the area during the 2019 campaign – ironically bringing Mr Albanese with him to support then-candidate Diane Beamer – where he spoke to local cancer patients and made a major health announcement.

Lindsay is currently held by the Liberal Party’s Melissa McIntosh by a margin of five per cent.

A poll in News Corp papers last week suggested the seat was “too close to call”.

A Labor campaign spokesperson said that the Opposition Leader had visited the electorate.

“Anthony Albanese has visited Lindsay with Trevor Ross – in fact, he made announcing Trevor’s candidacy an early priority,” the spokesperson said.

The Weekender can confirm that visit was in 2021.

“Trevor is an outstanding Labor Candidate and will make a far better Member for Lindsay than Melissa McIntosh has been,” the Labor spokesperson said.

Labor slams housing plan

abor has slammed the Coalition’s plan to allow first home buyers to access part of their superannuation to fund a deposit; money that would be returned upon a future sale.

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese said Labor wouldn’t support the idea.

“The government in its desperation has come up with a thought bubble… that according to itself has not been

modelled. They have no idea what the impact will be,” Mr Albanese said.

“The government now have a policy to cut super, to cut real wages of those on the minimum wage and to increase the cost-of-living pressures on people who are doing it really tough at the moment.”

Prime Minister Scott Morrison contends it’s a plan that “gets the balance right”.

was never someone who particularly cared or was interested in politics however over the last few years I’ve noticed that quality of life in Australia is steadily declining.

Politicians seem more interested in lining their own pockets and the pockets of their friends rather than helping the people they’re meant to represent.

Representatives are meant to fight for the interests of the people in their community, advocate for what they want and negotiate on their behalf with the bureaucrats in government but this never seems to be the case. Over the past few years housing has become more unaffordable, cost of living has sky rocketed, people are struggling to pay bills and buy groceries. More and more freedom is being stripped away from people in the name of “safety” yet no one ever asks the question who is going to keep you safe from the people who are stripping away your rights in the first place. Endless government red tape and regulations have created a nanny state that is ruining people’s lives and destroying businesses.

There’s a lot of problems and I can’t guarantee I can fix any of them but I can guarantee I’ll at least try.

Labor expected to hold seat of McMahon on Penrith’s edges EMILY FESZCZUK

S

ome Weekender readers will be voting at the Federal Election on Saturday for who will represent the seat of McMahon for the next three years.

The electorate of McMahon was formed in 2010 after the 20th Prime Minister of Australia, Sir William McMahon.

It replaced the previous seat of Prospect that was first created for the 1969 election.

Covering 168 square kilometres over several Local Government Areas, it includes parts of Kemps Creek, Mount Vernon, Erskine Park, Orchard Hills and St Clair.

McMahon is a safe Labor seat with a margin of 6.6 per cent under the current member, Chris Bowen.

Mr Bowen has been the Federal Member for the area since 2004 when it was known as Prospect and has continued to be successfully re-elected since the redistribution ahead of the 2010 election.

The other candidates that will be going up against Mr Bowen are Marie Saliba for the United Australia Party and Scott Ford representing Pauline Hanson’s One

Nation Party. Vivek Singha is running again in hopes to snag the seat for the Liberal Party, while Astrid O’Neill has also put her hand up again for the Greens.

The final candidate is Cameron Shamsabad who is hoping to gain votes for the Liberal Democrats.

Mr Bowen said while he doesn’t take his community and electorate for granted, he feels there is a mood for change in McMahon and southwest Sydney.

“Our community helped keep New South Wales and the country running during the pandemic – they deserve a government that addresses skyrocketing cost of living, falling real wages and invests in a better future,” Mr Bowen said.

“We are committed to cheaper childcare, bringing on renewables for cheaper power bills, strengthening Medicare and making medicines cheaper.

“To have a strong economy and secure well-paid jobs, we need to make more things here by rebuilding our manufacturing sector and investing in the industries of the future.”

Voting will take place on Saturday, May 21 from 8am to 6pm. People can vote locally on election day at St Clair Public School,

Cook Parade Neighbourhood Centre, Blackwell Public School, Banks Public School, Clairgate Public School, James Erskine Public School, Erskine Park High School, and Kemps Creek Public School.

ave you ever wondered what it’s like to become a bus driver? I went along to the Open Day at Busways’ Windsor Depot, and I’m here to tell you that it’s not as challenging as it may seem.

Although I haven’t been on a bus in a while, knowing that the next time I would be, I’d be behind the wheel, was definitely nerve-racking. Part of the reason for this was that I’m a fairly anxious driver as is. The other part was that I’ve been known to mount a curb or two.

But, when I walked into the depot, I was met with encouragement from Busways Driver Training Manager and Mentor Andy Curnow.

This wasn’t unexpected – he’s likely greeted hundreds of people just like me, given that

Busways does all of their driver training in-house to produce the best drivers possible.

Once I’d filled out all the necessary forms, which took no longer than five minutes, I was led around to where the different fleets were parked, and onto one of the Busways buses.

The first thing I noticed was that although the bus was about eight tonnes heavier than a car, the controls are much the same, making the skills it takes to drive the vehicle fairly comparable to those that a C Class license holder would use on a daily basis.

However, that’s not to say that driving the vehicle doesn’t take some getting used to.

Most notably, it’s important to get into the habit of leaning forward to turn the wheel – even though it’s not necessary, it is better for your back!

National Road Safety Week This week is National Road Safety Week (15-22 May) and I am urging our community to join me as I take the pledge to ‘drive so others survive’.

National Road Safety Week is an annual initiative from the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group, partnering road safety organisations and Government.

The week aims to highlight the impact of road trauma and ways to reduce it, as each year around 1200 people are killed on Australian roads, with another 44,000 seriously injured in accidents.

We all have a part to play in keeping ourselves and others safe on the road.

Unfortunately, people often get complacent when they drive as it’s part of their everyday routine and that is how accidents happen.

According to crash data obtained

by Transport for NSW, over a five-year period (2016 – 2020) there were 28

people killed and a further 2,351 injured in crashes in the Penrith LGA alone.

Behind the statistics are real people with families, friends, and workmates.

They are people we know, people we see as we go about our daily lives, and in most cases, they are just like you and me. No one should go through the tragedy and loss of losing someone they care for because of a motor vehicle accident.

Penrith: Police find knife during search of women on Evan Street A woman has been charged after possessing a knife in Penrith.

About 5.30pm on Wednesday, May 11, police were patrolling Evan Street, Penrith when they located a broken-down vehicle.

Police approached the vehicle and had a conversation with the occupants before making checks on the vehicle.

While searching all the occupants, police searched the handbag of a 21-yearold Telopea woman.

It is alleged that police located a box cutter and a flick knife.

The woman was charged with ‘Custody of knife in public place – first offence’.

She was set to appear in Penrith Local Court on Thursday, May 19.

Cranebrook: Driver admits he’s never held a licence A man has been charged after driving without a licence in Cranebrook.

About 10.15pm on Wednesday, May 11, police were patrolling Borrowdale Way, Cranebrook when they stopped a motor vehicle.

The driver, a 23-year-old Willmot man was breath tested, which proved negative.

The man was asked for his licence but allegedly informed officers that he had never held one.

Checks confirmed that the man had never held a licence in any Australian state or territory.

The man was charged with ‘Never licensed person drive vehicle on road – prior offence’.

He will appear at Penrith Local Court on Thursday, June 9.

South Penrith: Police find drugs during domestic call-out

A man has been charged with common assault and possessing prohibited drugs in South Penrith.

About 6pm on Friday, May 13, police were called to a residence in South Penrith in relation to reports of a domestic incident.

A 33-year-old man was spoken to by police, before reporting that he is a

with Daniel McKinnon regular user of marijuana. The man then surrendered a plastic container from the bathroom of the residence.

It is believed that there was 12 grams of marijuana powder in the container.

Police arrested and cautioned the man, before conveying him back to Penrith Police Station where he was charged.

The man was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, May 24.

Kingswood: Random breath test results in surprising discovery A man has been charged after being found possessing drugs, knives and cash in Kingswood.

About 4.50pm on Saturday, May 14, police conducted a random breath test on a motor vehicle in Kingswood.

It is alleged the driver, a 21-year-old Horsley Park man had an expired driver’s licence.

During discussions with the man, officers saw a knife handle protruding from the man’s pants pocket.

Police searched the man’s vehicle and located what is believed to be 61.93 grams of marijuana, clear resealable bags, digital scales, cash and further knives.

The man was charged.

Emu Plains: 22-year-old busted drink driving in early hours A man has been charged after being caught drink driving in Emu Plains.

About 2.55am on Sunday, May 15, police were patrolling Old Bathurst Road in Emu Plains.

They sighted a vehicle stopped a short distance from the intersection of Old Bathurst Road.

Officers made the driver, a 22-year-old Llandilo man, undergo a roadside breath test, which proved positive.

He was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station where he underwent a breath analysis, that returned a positive reading of 0.144.

The man’s licence was suspended on the spot and he was charged with ‘Drive with middle range PCA – first offence’.

TRENT BARRETT’S BULLDOGS EXIT Now and then we like to go over old ground in these columns and get back to basics with some of the information that we publish. When it comes to the NRL and the basics of contract law, they are the gift that keeps on giving.

We have written before in this column about coaches and players who seemingly are able to walk in and out of jobs despite having contracts in place that most members of the public would assume are legally binding – so why and how does this happen?

Contracts are a fairly basic concept.

One party usually agrees to provide a good or service (in this case Barrett providing coaching services) in return for something else (usually money, in this case contract payments/salary).

The “contract” reduces this agreement to writing and sets out the commercial terms, for example what duties Barrett was required to fulfil/provide in return for the price paid by the Club.

Legally, provided that the person providing the services aka Barrett does so in accordance with his contract, he has the right to expect payment each year for the sum agreed for the duration of his contract.

In years gone by, a coach departing a Club early usually resulted in an enormous cost to said Club who was forced to pay out the balance of the departing coach’s contract. This is basic contract law.

NRL coaches’ contracts have evolved however, and more and more are reportedly including provisions nowadays

which nominate a set figure payable to a coach if they are sacked by their Club.

It has been reported that Trent Barrett stood down from his role and will receive a payment of $500,000 in lieu of contract payments for the remainder of his contract.

Essentially a coach or player’s early departure from a Club becomes more of a business deal than a legal one, whereby the parties go back and forth to agree on a sum of money to pay the departing party to avoid legal proceedings.

Sometimes agreement cannot be reached and the aggrieved party will sue the other party for breach of contract.

The Des Hasler v Canterbury Bulldogs saga is a recent example of a coach who was not happy with the terms of their dismissal and sought to enforce their contract. That matter ultimately settled.

Given the nature of Trent Barrett reportedly “standing down”, he either did a deal with the Club to accept a sum of money in return for his early dismissal (dressed up as a resignation), or it was pre-written into his contract that if the Club sacked him he would be paid a predetermined sum. If he is in fact to be paid out as has been reported, it is difficult to see why such a payment would be made if he legitimately resigned of his own accord.

Usually, the terms of a deal like this are confidential, so we may never know – but ultimately it is most likely that the parties did a deal, subject to agreement not to sue each other and keeping the terms confidential.

enrith roared back into form last weekend with an intense dismantling of the Melbourne Storm, while the Roosters eased some of the concerns their fans have had after their start to the season.

It all makes for an intriguing match-up at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday night, as the Panthers aim to stay on top of the competition and their opponents look to consolidate a top four spot.

The Panthers would have taken enormous confidence out of last week’s win over Melbourne. After the slip-up against the Eels the week prior, it was a reassurance that the side’s Premiership defence is well and truly on track.

And it also saw a couple of players return to their best form, namely Viliame Kikau and Jarome Luai. Kikau, now playing 80

The Panthers starved Melbourne of possession last weekend, with 62 per cent of the ball and a completion rate of 81 per cent. They forced errors and frustrated the Storm, something Craig Bellamy’s side can be guilty of on the rare occasions they fall behind in games early.

The Panthers will again aim to respect the footy and dominate possession this weekend, as they have done for much of the season. In fact no side wins the possession battle more than Penrith.

After a shaky opening two months of the season, the Roosters have shown signs of

a mid-season run in the past two weeks, demolishing the Titans and never really looking in doubt against the Eels, despite a second half comeback from Brad Arthur’s team.

James Tedesco is finding form heading towards the State of Origin series, while Sam Walker and Luke Keary had one of the better games together last weekend as the Roosters strive to get that halves combination settled.

Coach Trent Robinson will be hoping there’s no backward step for Walker and Keary this weekend as they come up against the best halves in the competition, both fresh from solid performances.

In a blow for the Roosters, Victor Radley will be missing due to an ankle injury, while the Panthers will again field a full-strength side at the SCG on Saturday night.

I’m expecting an intense forward battle.

The clash of Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Siosiua Taukeiaho with James FisherHarris and Moses Leota will be worth the admission price alone. And Kikau, who knows what he’ll do given he’s found some confidence and form.

In the end, Penrith’s defence – the best in the competition by far – will be enough to get them home here. Penrith looked sharp, in focus and switched on last weekend – and there’s no reason to think they won’t take the same attitude into this one.

The Roosters will be buoyed by the home ground advantage and last week’s solid win over Parramatta, but the Panthers are just looking too good at the moment and I can’t see them slipping up here, especially on the back of last week’s impressive win.

Tip: Panthers by 10.

CIRALDO UNLIKELY TO DEPART ! Ciro won’t be a Bulldog: The chances of Penrith assistant coach Cameron Ciraldo joining the Bulldogs as their new head coach are remote, but not totally out of the question. Ciraldo would be silly not to at least listen to a head coach job offer but I’m told his appetite for heading to Belmore just isn’t there, despite his links with several key players including Matt Burton and Viliame Kikau. Anyone coaching the side will have to do so under the scrutiny of Phil Gould, and Ciraldo knows all about that and how it impacts, and sometimes impedes, the head coach. Ciraldo would also be aware that other NRL jobs are likely to emerge in the next off-season which may have more interest and stability.

! West hard to beat: It’s no surprise that Stephen Crichton has been linked to a possible switch to NRL newcomers the Dolphins, but clubs wanting to raid Penrith’s Premiership winners have a stumbling block bigger than big-money contracts: the ties so many of these players have to their community. It’s why the likes of Crichton, Brian To’o and Jarome Luai are all likely to take slightly less cash than what rivals are offering if it means they can stay in greater western Sydney. That’s not to say the money won’t be tempting enough to sway someone along the line, but the Penrith / Mount Druitt connection will keep plenty of players at the foot of the Mountains in the years to come.

! Barrett return not on the cards: Many fans automatically jumped to the conclusion that Trent Barrett could find his way back to Penrith in an assistant role now that he’s parted ways with the Bulldogs. I’m told there’s more chance of Clive Palmer joining the Penrith coaching staff than Barrett, who has been at the club twice before.

! Fans over the top: Your writer has started exiting some of the Facebook groups dedicated to the Panthers out of pure frustration. The ridiculous accusations that the referees are against Penrith, that there’s some NRL and media conspiracy against the team and the slagging off of other teams has reached fever pitch. It is very rare, despite what one-eyed fans like to believe, that a referee has all that much influence over the result of a game, and even rarer that a referee “has it out” for a certain team. Some of Penrith’s fans need a lesson in humility and maybe a copy of the NRL rule book. It’s embarrassing. And let’s not forget – the Panthers have lost only a handful of games in the past three seasons and made two Grand Finals. To suggest there’s some sort of conspiracy against them is bordering on lunacy.

! Martin looks for big deal: Second rower Liam Martin wants to stay at Penrith but the 25-year-old would be silly not to put himself on the open market and see where his value sits, especially if he plays Origin again this year. Martin is off-contact at the end of the 2023 season and would be free to talk to rival clubs on November 1. This new deal could well be the biggest Martin will ever sign and he’ll do the right thing and trust the process to find him the best deal. Don’t rule the Panthers out – they know Martin is not easily replaced, particularly given his versatility in the pack.

! Luai battled on: It won’t be talked about but I’m told it was nothing short of remarkable that Jarome Luai played against the Eels a fortnight ago. He was so sick that some officials expected him to miss the game. It won’t go down in rugby league folklore but it was a mighty effort from the five-eighth. ! Cleary back in the box: Panthers coach Ivan Cleary is finally expected to return to the coach’s box this weekend at the SCG after his troublesome knee saw him miss a second consecutive game last weekend. Cleary was hoping to receive a medical clearance to fly to Brisbane on

lection night this Saturday won’t just be about the battle for the top job in Canberra, it will also see two old foes lock horns when the top of the table Panthers take on a resurgent Sydney Roosters at the SCG. Both teams are coming off strong last start victories, with the Roosters taking care of business against an in-form Parramatta, while Penrith dealt Melbourne their largest defeat since 2014.

After dismantling the Storm with relative ease during the NRL’s Magic Round, Panthers prop Scott Sorensen said their 26-point victory came down to preparation and outsmarting their opponent.

“The Melbourne Storm are Premiership heavyweights. Their results over the last month of footy has seen them come up with some big wins,” he told Extra Time.

“For us, it wasn’t necessarily focusing on the result, it was more focusing on our process and what we do well. Obviously we prepared really well for them, we came up with a few things in attack and defence that we thought would be smart and it seemed to work for us.

well, you’re going to give yourself the best chance against such a good team.”

Making Penrith’s performance against the 2020 Premiers even more remarkable was the fact they did it without their inspi-

rational coach Ivan Cleary, who missed his second straight game with a knee infection.

Sorensen said while Cleary was missed on game day, he was there in spirit through his very capable assistants and co-captains.

“You always love having your head coach there, for sure, but under the circumstances he couldn’t be,” Sorensen said.

“The group dealt with it really well though, obviously led by our assistant coaches Cameron Ciraldo and Andrew Webster and the staff, they did an amazing job to make sure we were prepared and ready to go.

“I also feel like we’ve got two really good leaders in our captains that know how to direct and steer the ship around off the field as well.”

With Cleary set to be back in the box on Saturday night, he’ll no doubt be hoping his side can build off last weekend’s statementmaking result.

Trent Robinson’s men have won their last two games and have re-entered the top four after their upset win over Parramatta.

“It’s no surprise that they’re back in the top four. 1-17 they are a really strong side and a real dangerous attacking side across the field,” Sorensen said.

“Coming off another good win on the weekend, I think they’re building really nicely and I think they’re really starting to play some good footy.

“Hopefully we can build off our result on the weekend and put up another strong performance against the Roosters because we’re going to have to – they’re a really, really strong side.”

THE MAGIC CONTINUES WITH A SUPER SATURDAY TO DIE FOR

Cowboys taking on the Storm – 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 on the ladder – and it promises to be an all-time night of viewing on Fox League.

The Roosters fought hard last year to have Joseph Suaalii cleared to play by the NRL before his 18th birthday, and while there were glimpses in 2021 at the undeniable talent he has, the teenager is suddenly one of the more dangerous wingers in the NRL. He has a very strong carry of the ball when the Roosters are working it out of trouble, can step with anybody in the competition, and when it comes to leaping for high balls in attack he’s just as good as Daniel Tupou, who has long been an obvious target on the Tricolours’ left edge.

Suaalii and Tupou both stand at 196cm, which is 15cm taller than both of the men who’ll be marking them for the Panthers, Brian To’o and Taylan May. If the kicking game of Keary and Walker is as sharp as it’s been over the past two weeks for the Roosters, there’s no doubt it will provide plenty of headaches for the Panthers, who will need a team-effort on both sides of the field to try and stop the Roosters wingers.

That’s the bad news for the Panthers. The good news is that when the boot is on the other foot – Nathan Cleary’s most notably – the Penrith captain will try and expose the Roosters by targeting the colossus that is Viliame Kikau, who will line-up against Keary and have just as big a height advan-

tage as Suaalii and Tupou at the other end of the field. Size isn’t everything, but boy it helps.

ne of the great things about Magic Round in Brisbane is the first-hand opportunity to see how the NRL’s top playmakers go about their business.

And the big guns didn’t disappoint.

Nathan Cleary was pivotal as the Panthers unpicked the depleted Storm, Chad Townsend continued to prove the critics wrong for the Cowboys, Luke Keary nailed the big moments for the Roosters, and Adam Reynolds would be voted in as Mayor of Brisbane in a landslide if an election was held tomorrow.

Each of them bring different skillsets to their teams’ attack, but the one thing they all possess is a gold-plated kicking game.

Reynolds’ chip-and-chase effort to set Suncorp Stadium alight against the Sea Eagles brought back memories of the great Allan Langer, who watched Reynolds’ piece of individual brilliance from the vantage point of the Broncos bench and no doubt loved every second of it.

Adam Reynolds might now be referred to as Alfie Reynolds from this point forward.

Roosters five-eighth Sam Walker produced a similar try from a kick over the top for himself against a 12-man Eels outfit, and when he and Luke Keary get to go head-to-head with Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Round 11 this weekend, it really will put the super into Super Saturday.

RECORDS WILL TUMBLE: WHY CLEARY WILL BE GAME’S BEST I

t’s almost certain that by the time he finishes his career, Nathan Cleary may not only go down as the greatest player and point scorer the Panthers have ever produced but maybe the highest point scorer in the history of rugby league.

This somewhat bold prediction is made just as Nathan passes Penrith legend Greg Alexander as the second highest point scorer in Panthers history.

Cleary finished the weekend on 1108 points, four clear of Brandy’s career tally of 1104. There’s no doubt Alexander’s total would have been a lot higher if he hadn’t played two seasons with the Warriors (1995-96) but unfortunately you can’t re-write history.

Well, not unless you’re Nathan Cleary.

The man known as ‘Clez’ is only 464 points behind current Penrith all-time number one point scorer Ryan Girdler (1572). This record will fall in the next two years if Cleary stays healthy.

At 24, Cleary already holds several point scoring records. He’s already the second youngest player behind Graham Eadie to pass 1000 career points and he also holds the record of most points scored in a single match for Penrith with 34 (Rd 25 v Newcastle 2019). That figure is also the second most points scored in a single NRL game.

While Girdler’s record may be a couple of years away, the next one in Nathan’s sights would have to be his father’s. Yep, currently

Ivan Cleary sits at number 25 in the NRL all-time point scoring record holders with 1363 points.

I expect Clez to pass that figure next year.

Now, let’s take a look at who currently sits atop the mountain as rugby league’s number one point scorer. Yes, it’s the Melbourne Storm’s Cameron Smith with a phenomenal 2786 points.

As a guide Smith was 37 when he retired and played another record breaking 430 rugby league games.

At 24-years-old there is no doubt that

Nathan Cleary is at ‘Base Camp’ when it comes to reaching that Everest peak but he’s certainly well on his way.

With many rugby league players now playing well into their mid-30s there’s no reason why, if he keeps taking care of himself and like a fine wine, keeps maturing and getting better with age, Clez could easily play another 10 years, if not more.

Anyone out there who thinks that Cameron’s Smith’s record is out of reach… well, just remember one thing... records are made to be broken.

enrith Panthers Jersey Flegg Cup coach Jono Rolfe believes the team is well-placed heading into the middle of the season, despite three straight losses earlier in the year.

After a pair of victories to open the season, COVID-19 and NSW Cup commitments saw several players and an assistant coach miss games.

Despite that, losses against Souths and Canterbury were only by two and four points respectively, with Rolfe believing that the Panthers were the better side for most of the game against the Bulldogs.

“I actually felt we were the better side [against Canterbury],” Rolfe said.

“We just had one or two moments where we led with 15 minutes to go and blew that game. We turned a corner then I felt.

“I had a couple of tough conversations with a few players.

“Even though we didn’t get the result that day I felt that we probably should have.”

The reversal in form has been strong, winning four straight games by 20 points or more.

The ability to select virtually the same squad each week also helped with that according to Rolfe, especially the spine.

In addition to the turnaround in form, Rolfe was also happy with the way the players have come together, particularly those from outside the Penrith system.

“We had some kids from outside the

system and they’ve really started to find their feet and understand what the club is about,” he said.

“Culturally, they’ve really been buying in.”

Rolfe said he was proud of the effort the team was making, along with their willingness to improve, but did note that there’s still plenty to work on coming into the Origin period when players will be called up to NSW Cup. “There’s always something to improve on.

We’re just nailing each week with our preparation,” he said.

“I wouldn’t say there’s one particular weakness in our side at the moment but it’s about playing for 70 minutes.”

Rolfe nominated Ativalu Lisati, Niwhai and Hohepa Puru, Connor Mason, Isaiah Iongi, Bradley Fearnley and Hanna El-Nchar as just some of the players who have impressed him heading into Saturday’s clash with the Roosters at Leichhardt.

HERITAGE AT THE CORE OF NEW SHOW CASSIDY PEARCE fter a successful season with their debut work, ‘Grimm’, choreographer Francesco Ventriglia is excited to be debuting his new work ‘Galileo’ at Riverside Theatres this month.

With a long and successful career in the dance world behind him, Francesco created Sydney Choreographic Centre and the accompanying ensemble in 2021 based on his desire not only to settle down in one place, but to help other creatives in their journeys.

“I had a dream to create something, like

a place where creatives or choreographers can go deep into the creative process and learn more from people,” he said.

“Alongside that, of course I’m a choreographer, so my big passion is to create, so I felt to create a company that could be in residency to the centre, and that’s how we created the ensemble.”

Following the positive reception of, ‘Grimm’ last year at Riverside Theatres, Francesco was grateful to be asked to present another work in 2022, this time getting a little more personal.

“I have to say that after many years of choreographing, I realised at some point that I’ve never really created something about my country, my heritage, my cul-

ture,” he said.

“And so when Parramatta confirmed the dates, I saw that the opening night was on the second of June, and the second of June is of course the Italian National Republic Day, so I thought that could be an amazing opportunity for me, as an Italian choreographer living here in Australia, to create a tribute, something to celebrate my heritage.”

It was from this that he became inspired

by Galileo Galilei, an Italian astronomer who is widely considered to be the father of modern science.

“I rediscovered all this incredible literature about free fall motions, and trajectory, and binoculars, and the astronomy and

the beautiful speed and velocity and inertia, and I thought, ‘what incredible journey could it be, trying to have this inform every single step of choreography of a dance?” he said.

As he moves towards the contemporary ballet’s debut at Riverside, Francesco is eager to see the hard work of his dancers pay off.

“I am very lucky and grateful, because I have an extraordinary group of dancers.

They are young and beautiful and committed, they are hungry to dance and have a lot of energy,” he said.

‘Galileo’ will be on at Riverside Theatres from Wednesday, June 1. Tickets are $59. To book, call 8839 3399.

ustralia’s iconic 1980s – a time when the colours were bright, and the hair was just as big as the shoulder pads. But, it was the flow on effect of ‘70s sexual liberation and feminism that was having an impact on men.

This month, Henry Lawson Theatre INC is bringing it all back, as Hannie Rayson’s ‘Room to Move’ takes the stage.

‘Room to Move’ tells the story of 29-year-old lodger, Bernie, as he moves in with 62-year-old widow, Peggy, and her devious children, Virginia and Roger.

Director Sari Erasmus Hickey is especially excited to be bringing the script to life, as it was given to her by Doreen Warburton, who started the Q Theatre and brought it to Penrith in 1977.

“Audiences will enjoy it as even today, there is so much they can relate to – it has fast-moving action with no drawn-out sections, which will test their attention spans,” she said.

“This is all performed on a flexible set with an innovative design displaying many ‘80s inventions that became part of our lives.”

‘Room to Move’ will be on at Henry Lawson Theatre from Friday, May 20.

Loss of country legends The country music world is mourning the loss of two of its biggest names from yesteryear.

Earlier this month, Mickey Gilley (pictured) passed away after an illness, surrounded by family and friends.

Mickey helped launch the urban cowboy movement in country music, and had 17 chart-topping hits during his career.

s winter temperature arrive, we often see an increase in arthritis cases in both young and old animals. One in five dogs suffers from the pain and disability caused by arthritis. Cats can also suffer from the damaging effects of this condition and may have difficulty grooming themselves or going to the toilet.

Arthritis is one of the most common conditions affecting dogs but as pets are unable to communicate their pain, the early signs of this illness are often missed or simply attributed to old age.

Yet arthritis is a chronic, painful, degenerative condition that can develop gradually over time, affecting one or more joints (typically the hips, knees and elbows) and causing much inflammation and pain.

Arthritis is not limited to certain breeds and it can affect any pet at any age. It can influence a pet’s quality of life and prevent it from enjoying simple, daily activities such as walking, running or playing.

Signs that a pet may be suffering: • Reluctance to walk or play • Limping • Stiffness of joints in the morning or after a sleep

• Licking or biting of joints • Difficulty in rising from a resting position • Difficulty in climbing stairs • Change in personality – less happy and playful or sometimes aggressive and irritable.

Arthritis cannot be cured. The key to controlling the pain associated with arthritis is managing the inflammation within the joints. The added benefit to this is that with proper management, progression can be slowed.

• Weight control is extremely important when managing the symptoms and minimising the progression of arthritis • Walking and swimming are the best forms of exercise for dogs with arthritis.

• Omega 3 fatty acids help block the inflammation around joints that causes pain. They also suppress the activity of an enzyme that causes cartilage damage • Joint cartilage protective medications aim to increase joint fluid production and increase blood supply to joint surfaces. The use of polysulphate injections have been proven to slow the progression.

L

uke Boyes has always been a fast runner. In primary school he blitzed the Cross Country and then tackled Little Athletics to great acclaim.

However, at 13, Boyes fell out of love with athletics and decided to give cricket a go.

Throughout much of his high schooling years, he would play cricket over summer and soccer over winter. Boyes was enjoying his time between the two sports until life got tough for everyone last year when Sydney was plunged into lockdown.

body going again. So he turned to an old ‘friend’.

“During COVID last year, cricket wasn’t going great. I was a little bit bored, a little bit lonely, so I decided to get back into athletics,” Boyes told the Weekender.

“I got back into it with Run Crew in the Blue Mountains and I started enjoying it more and more.”

After recording a 7-second PB during a race earlier this season, Boyes quickly realised he still had it.

“I thought to myself, ‘I’m not too bad at this’,” he said.

What would happen to Boyes in the coming months is quite extraordinary.

The former Penrith High School student

would go on to qualify for the Australian Track and Field Championships after claiming the NSW junior title over a strong field.

There, he would finish second by the smallest of margins in the 800m but, because his time was so fast, it was enough to send him to Columbia this August to compete at the U20 World Athletics Championships.

In the space of 12 months, Boyes will go from lacing up his running shoes again after a long lay-off to representing Australia for the very first time.

“I could never have imagined it,” the 18-year-old admitted.

“I got back into athletics in August last

year and my goal back then was just to see how I would go after being out of it for a while.

“I really didn’t know what to expect.

I couldn’t imagine I’d be representing Australia eight or nine months later.”

In just a few short months, this UTS Law and Social Political Science student will be up against some of the best young athletes in the world when he lines up in the 800m.

“I’m a bit nervous, as you would be, it’s the biggest competition that I’ve ever been to, but I’m also excited because it’s a new challenge that will hopefully come with new opportunities in the future,” he said.

“My goal is to make it into the semi-final, which I think I’m a good chance of doing.”

ate Penrith Golf Club legend Rod Sutherland will be forever remembered for his long-time dedication and commitment to the club after being awarded posthumous Life Membership recently.

Before passing away in March, Sutherland made a significant contribution to Penrith Golf Club for the best part of 45 years in both an official and unofficial capacity.

Sutherland joined Penrith Golf Club in 1977 and prior to that was a cadet from 1974.

During his many years with Penrith, Sutherland served on the Board from 2001 to 2016, and was Club Captain in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, and ViceCaptain from 2011 to 2016.

Whether serving on the Board or not, Sutherland volunteered a significant amount of time closing off member competitions, handicapping and undertaking general administration work.

Sutherland’s golfing achievements were substantial also, including being

Club Champion in 1994, 1997, 2008 and 2011. He was also runner-up in 2006 and 2007, as well as Junior Champion in 1982.

Sutherland also won many other Major and Cup events such as Match Play Champion in 2007 and 2008, as well as being runner-up in 2004 and 2005. He was also successful at the Mixed Foursomes in 2009, Foursomes in 2010 and at the Easter and Autumn Cups.

Proving he had golf running through his veins, Sutherland represented Penrith Golf Club in Junior, Major and Masters pennants for the majority of the years between 1982 and 2019.

ormer Essendon star Mark McVeigh is the new caretaker coach of the GWS Giants after Leon Cameron dramatically quit the club last week after nine seasons in charge.

Last Thursday the Giants announced that the club and Cameron had mutually agreed to part ways, with the 49-year-old’s senior assistant taking over as interim senior coach for the remainder of the year.

After joining the club as senior assistant coach to inaugural coach Kevin Sheedy at the end of the club’s first season in 2012, Cameron took over as senior coach ahead of the 2014 season. During that period, he coached the Giants in 192 matches, led the side to five Finals series in six years, including two Preliminary Finals, and guided the club to a maiden Grand Final appearance in 2019.

With the Giants sitting in 15th a third of the way into the season, Cameron said he was grateful for his time with the club and content with the decision to conclude his tenure as the club’s senior coach.

“After a lot of consideration over the past few weeks, it became clear in recent days that the time was right for me to move on,” he said.

“I’ve always had the best interests of the club at heart, which is why now is the right time for change.

“No one person is bigger than the club itself and I know that this is the right decision for the club’s future. I’ve given everything to the role and am proud of the part I’ve played in building the Giants over the past decade.

“This is a special club with a lot of great people, who have supported me every step of the way.”

Giants CEO David Matthews paid tribute to the club’s second ever senior coach, noting Cameron’s role in establishing the club across its formative years.

“We thank Leon for everything he’s done – and achieved – as senior coach of the Giants over the past nine years,” he said.

“Leon is a person of the highest quality and integrity and we’ve valued the ability to have honest conversations about the best way forward for the club. It was quickly apparent during a discussion earlier this week that we were in clear agreement that now is the time to take a different direction relative to the senior coach position.”

Cameron coached his final game in Giants colours last week, a 30-point loss to Carlton.

GWS has already commenced the process of appointing the club’s next senior coach.

Hope melts for Palace Plea for help: Passionate group determined to save ice sports in Penrith EMILY FESZCZUK

W

ith the doors of Penrith Ice Palace set to close forever at the end of June, local sporting clubs have banded together to save ice sports in western Sydney.

After being sold last year, the newly formed Western Sydney Ice Sports Co-operative has been raising money to rent and run the ice-skating rink.

While it appears a lease agreement won’t be reached with the new owner, Sydney Ice Theatre Club President and ice-skating coach Linda Aubrecht told the Weekender the group wants to find a solution for the community.

“Three ice hockey clubs, broomball, Penrith Valley Figure Skating Club and Sydney Ice Theatre have come together to create the Co-op and pool funds,” she said.

“We are trying everything we can including a few last-minute leads to save Penrith rink but if not, we will be looking to open our own ice rink.”

With the Co-op also contacting State and Local Government for any assistance, it is looking for donations for its cause.

for another venue in our region to fit out as an ice rink from scratch, but it is a huge task and a lot of money,” she said.

“We are not able to get a bank loan of that amount being newly formed, so we need help getting started.”

With over 400 combined members within the clubs involved, Ms Aubrecht said the closure of the rink will be devastating to the ice sports community.

“Blacktown and Norwest have already closed. Penrith is the last Olympic size rink in western Sydney and the other rinks like Liverpool are at capacity,” she said.

“Broomball is also a unique sport played around Australia but in New South Wales, Penrith is the only rink it is played at, so it could be lost altogether.”

As Winter Sports World is still possibly years away from completion, the teams will continue to try to save their sports.

“If we started right now, it would mean time off the ice for our skaters and players, but we are hopeful that we will find a solution,” she said.

“Our vision is that we can run a not-forprofit organisation where you can go for school sport, birthday parties, a fun family activity and of course for sport.”

Liam has talent and top attitude NATHAN TAYLOR

emember the name Liam Doddrell because this St Clair cricket star has a massive future ahead of him.

Not only is Doddrell the latest recipient of the Penrith Valley Sports Foundation (PVSF) Senior Sports Star Award, but he’s also just been signed by the NSW Blues on a Rookie contract for the upcoming 2022/23 season.

After an impressive NSW Premier Cricket campaign with the Penrith Cricket Club and being a reserve for the Australian U19 World Cup squad earlier this year, Doddrell was one of the first rookies picked by Cricket NSW. “Obviously we look at skill level and performance when we assess players, but we also look at things like character and attitude when introducing new cricketers onto our rookie list,” Cricket NSW Head of Male Cricket, Michael Klinger said. “[Doddrell]… has demonstrated maturity and skills on and off the field.

“With our rookies, we have a big emphasis on cricket and life balance including those who are still at school, university or working.

“We look forward to watching them develop and grow in our system.”

Doddrell was an integral part of Penrith’s Poidevin Gray Shield team this year. The side reached the Grand Final, losing to Sutherland in the decider.

The 19-year-old quick was also selected in the NSW U19 team, that competed at the recent National Championships.

On top of his Senior Sports Star accolade with PVSF, Doddrell was also one of 12 players awarded a prestigious Basil Sellers scholarship last October after taking eight wickets at a strike rate of 14.63 while featuring for NSW Metro at the 2019/20 U17 National Championships.

“Liam had a breakout year in his first full season in first grade, proving an integral member of our team and the club’s future,” Penrith coach, Josh Lalor said.

AFL: The Penrith Rams have been beaten by arch-rivals Parramatta 72-66 in Round 6 of the AFL Sydney Platinum Division competition. Mitchell Stevens booted three goals in the six-point defeat. RUGBY UNION: Following last

RUGBY LEAGUE: Following the NRL Magic Round, Round 9 of the Sydney Shield and Ron Massey Cup competitions will resume this weekend. This Saturday St Marys will battle the Kaiviti Silktails in the Ron Massey Cup, while their Sydney Shield side has another weekend off with the bye.

SUPER NETBALL: Giants Netball is back on Struggle Street, going down to the Melbourne Vixens 66-63 in Round 9 of the Super Netball competition. The Giants fought back in the second half but the Vixens had too much power in the end to seal the win. The Giants were set to play a mid-week game on Wednesday night against Collingwood.

PREMIER LEAGUE NETBALL:

Panthers Netball have been outclassed by the Central Coast Heart 63-47 in Round 5 of the Premier League Opens competition. Meanwhile, the Panthers U23s team were on the end of a 54-40 loss to the Heart. Both sides will take on the Capital Spirit in Round 6 where they’ll look to get their season back on track.

AFL: The Giants have been beaten in Leon Cameron’s final game as coach, blown away by Carlton 105-75 in Round 9 of the AFL competition. With assistant Mark McVeigh now at the helm for the remainder of the season, it’s hoped the Giants can give their new coach a win when they go head on with fellow cellar dwellers West Coast on Sunday.

ollowing yet another disappointing season in which they fired a coach, won six games, and finished 10th, the Western Sydney Wanderers have farewelled six players from this year’s roster with more departures on the horizon.

Bernie Ibini will depart the club at the end of his two-year deal, having featured in 46 A-Leagues matches and scoring five goals.

A proud leader in the western Sydney community, Ibini played a significant role for the club both on and off the field as a proud ambassador for the region.

The Wanderers are also waving goodbye to Dimi Petratos after his one-year loan deal expired. Petratos returned to his hometown club at the start of the 2021/22 season and made 23 A-Leagues appearances and scored three goals during his stint.

Foreign signings Tomer Hemed, Tomas Mejias, Ziggy Gordon and Keijiro Ogawa will all say farewell at the end of their deals.

Goalkeeper Mejias made 13 appearances for the Red & Black, while Japanese forward Ogawa’s loan deal comes to an end after 26 matches and two goals.
