t’s the fast food revolution being spearheaded right here in the local area. A growing trend in the food industry, prepackaged meals are changing the way people think of fast food – and it may just be a key in solving western Sydney’s obesity crisis. Pre-packaged meals have come a long way from the classic TV dinner. Andre Froemel from Stack Up Foods in Glenmore Park said it’s all about the new way in which food is being prepared and packaged. “The fast food industry is changing and I think this adds a new meaning to the fast food concept,” he said. “I eat the food myself because it is so healthy and convenient.” Mr Froemel’s meals take just three minutes in the microwave to heat up before they are ready to be eaten. An idea that started from being overweight himself, Mr Froemel created Stack Up Foods in Glenmore Park to gain a healthier lifestyle. “I love the food myself and then on top of that the comments from customers and Facebook followers has been amazing,” he said. The store has over 450 likes on Facebook with people describing the food as ‘nutritious and delicious’ and ‘great healthy affordable meals’. Another food store to follow in the trend and introduce packaged meals is Nutrition Station in North Penrith with their NU Meals concept. Different types of meat, proteins and veggies are all available in a variety of meal concepts both at Stack Up Foods and Nutrition Station.

amilies will have easier access to childcare with the announcement of a $246 million pilot program to subsidise in-house nannies. Federal Minister for Social Services, Scott Morrison met with Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott and families at Tench Reserve on Tuesday to announce the two year nanny pilot program he said will facilitate care for around 10,000 children. “[The Home Based Carer Subsidy Program] will support shift workers, fire fighters, police and ambulance officers, those who are working irregular hours,” he said. “It’s not supposed to replace anything in family day care, occasional care or long day care, it’s to provide added support. “The focus here is supporting families who can’t access the mainstream services now, and that will be key criteria for assessing people’s involvement in this pilot program.” The Government will assist by providing an hourly subsidy directly to the nanny service per child. It will be means tested according to the family’s income. Families will be able to apply for the

F

program later this year and must meet the guidelines to safeguard against ‘child swapping’ and using ineligible carers such as family members. Concerns were raised over the compliance and public liability insurance of nannies and whether they will have the same minimum qualifications as day care providers. Mr Morrison said insurance will be required from nannies but not early childhood learning accreditation as this service needs to reflect the flexibility of the families involved. “Over the two year period we will be able to address any of the integrity and compliance issues and regulation issues that need to be addressed before considering a more mainstream application of the service,” he said. Annemarie Sansom from the Australian Nanny Association has five children and is delighted with the announcement, but said people who are providing this service need to have some understanding of early childhood development. “Whether that’s from a professional development perspective or they have some formal training or are currently working towards it,” she said. “The key factors here are shift workers

was a police officer for 25 years, and said this is ideal for emergency service workers who don’t know what their day will lead to. “Sometimes if there’s a major incident you can be out there for 15 to 16 hours and you just can’t get home,” he said.

So-called fans just don’t get it when it comes to behaving in the stands Why don’t Wanderers fans get it? The last game of the A-League season for the Western Sydney Wanderers took a nasty turn last weekend when crowd behaviour was again thrust into the spotlight. I wasn’t at Pirtek Stadium last Saturday night and hence can’t provide any first hand knowledge of what happened. Wanderers fans who are part of the Red and Black Bloc active supporter group have made it pretty clear that they believe police were heavyhanded and used pepper spray unnecessarily. In a statement issued via social media, the Red and Black Bloc claimed that police resources “can be better utilised elsewhere and encouraged people to record incidents involving police. Fans have also posted videos that they believe show police in a negative light. I don’t quite see it that way – one of the videos clearly shows Wanderers supporters acting like complete idiots outside of the ground, perhaps justifying the police response. As is fair, there should be an investigation to ensure that the actions of police on the night were above board, and I am sure there will be as discussions continue between the club, the FFA and police. But my main question is this: After all the problems the Wanderers had in the initial year or two of their existence, and after all the warnings, why did some buffoon let off a flare during the game? And why in their statement issued on Sunday night did the Red and Black Bloc not condemn the lighting of the flare that sparked all of the drama? Is it that a certain section of the Wanderers fan base just doesn’t get it? Lighting a flare inside a sporting venue is illegal. What is so hard about that for some of these so-called fans to understand? In their statement, the Red and Black Bloc said they would not “be treated as second class

Moylan deserves NSW Origin spot It seems that only St George-Illawarra’s Josh Dugan stands in the way of Penrith star Matt Moylan making his State of Origin debut with New South Wales this year. If he does get selected in Laurie Daley’s team, it will not only be a proud moment for Moylan and his family but for the entire Penrith district given he’s a local junior. Moylan has done enough to prove himself but Daley and the NSW selectors will be keeping a keen eye on him when he plays for the City Origin side against Country this Sunday. Congratulations to all the Panthers players who will play representative football in some capacity this weekend. Dawn Service did Penrith proud Congratulations to the many thousands of people who turned up very early for the Dawn Service at Memory Park last Saturday. It was a beautiful and poignant service to commemorate 100 years of the ANZAC spirit and those who have fought to protect the way of life we now enjoy. The number of young people in the crowd was particularly pleasing, with the ANZAC spirit and the popularity of ANZAC Day certain to be passed down to future generations. Thanks to the saviours in orange The SES do a remarkable job in the aftermath of storm situations and the last couple of weeks has been no different. Congratulations and thank you to all the volunteers who are truly heroes in our communities.

ANZAC Day

Penrith’s emotional tribute to those who fought for our freedom @troydodds

ore than 7000 people braved the early morning weather to attend the Dawn Service at Penrith’s Memory Park on ANZAC Day. City of Penrith RSL Sub-Branch President, Mick McConnell, said it was the biggest crowd ever seen for an ANZAC Day Dawn Service in Penrith. “Approximately 7000 members of the community turned out for the Dawn Service in Memory Park to commemorate those who have fallen, not only at Gallipoli but from some 31 conflicts and peacekeeping operations between 1885 to the current date,” Mr McConnell said. “This has been the largest crowd that I have seen at Memory Park and I think that the 100th anniversary has really raised the awareness of people to support their family members past and present who have served for Australia.” Mr McConnell paid tribute to the many people who played a part in ensuring this year’s Dawn Service was a success. One of the biggest parts of the ANZAC commemorations this year was Poppy Park, which saw tens of thousands of people drawn to the Penrith CBD to view the unique tribute. on Wednesday after what has been a successful six weeks. Poppy Park co-founder Martin Rogers thanked the community for its support of the concept. “The engagement of the community has made this really special,” he said. “It’ll live long into the hearts and minds of all the people, over 50,000, who have visited it over the last six weeks.” Big crowds were also in attendance at the St Marys RSL Dawn Service last Saturday morning.

Penrith: Dramatic police chase ends on Castlereagh Road

A man was charged on Monday after police pulled over a silver Ford sedan on Mamre Road due to the driver allegedly using his mobile phone. After police officers spoke with the 32-yearold man he started to become nervous and agitated. Following on from this, the officers conducted a search of the man’s vehicle where they allegedly found nearly 40kg of MDMA, 3kg of cannabis and an amount of heroin. Officers then attended the man’s residential premises in Orchard Hills where they seized three 1kg silver bullions and several drivers’ licenses, believed to be stolen. He was charged with a range of offences and was due to appear in Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, April 28.

Three people have been charged, with one man still on the run, after a police pursuit ended in Penrith last Friday, April 24. At about 1pm police from Mudgee Local Area Command observed a silver Nissan Pulsar leave a home on Market Street at Mudgee. Checks revealed the vehicle was stolen and police attempted to stop it before it left the home. It is alleged the vehicle was stolen from a residential address in Kellyville in Sydney. A female passenger left the car and was arrested after the driver allegedly rammed the police vehicle and fled the location. PolAir continued to monitor the vehicle as it travelled toward Sydney after the pursuit by police was terminated. Shortly after 3pm, officers from Penrith Local Area Command initiated a pursuit with the vehicle at Penrith. During the pursuit, a number of the vehicle’s tyres were deflated after the success of road spikes near the intersection of Coreen Avenue and Castlereagh Road. The car then got bogged in a median strip on Castlereagh Road. A 26-year-old man, a 35-year-old man and a 23-year-old man were all charged with one man remaining outstanding. The first two passengers were granted conditional bail to appear before Penrith Local Court on Thursday, May 7 while the 23-year-old man was refused bail and was due to appear in Parramatta Local Court on Saturday, April 25.

Police are appealing for information after four firearms were stolen during a break-in at Luddenham last week. A gun safe was allegedly broken into that contained four firearms including a hollis double barrel shotgun, a slazenger rifle, a lithgow rifle, and a browning rifle. The residents were away between Tuesday, April 21 and Sunday, April 26 when their property on The Northern Road was allegedly broken into. Police from Green Valley Local Area Command have commenced an investigation and are urging anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

wo blocks of land in Londonderry are now protected under conservation contracts that will preserve their natural and cultural heritage infinitely. On Tuesday, the land became part of the Cumberland Conservation Corridor, a critically endangered ecosystem the Australian Government had previously committed to protecting. Minister for the Environment, Greg Hunt made the announcement alongside Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott. He said it’s just one of many ways the government is preserving western Sydney’s green spaces. “Our support for the Cumberland Conservation Corridor recognises the importance of protecting remnant habitat and urban forests within and around our cities, particularly in Greater Western Sydney,” he said. “This land has been virtually untouched for the past 30 years and is in very good condition. Large trees and logs provide habitat for native wildlife, and more than 30 bird species have been identified in the area.” The Australian Government is providing $15 million to support land under

Member for Londonderry Prue Car and Shadow Health Minister Walt Secord visited the hospital on Wednesday to remind the community of the Liberal Party’s $4 million commitment to plan the $370 million upgrade. Ms Car said the coming State Budget is a chance for the Government to ‘come good’ on their election commitment to fund planning for the Stage 4 redevelopment of the hospital. “State Budget is not too far away, and that’s an opportunity to tell us exactly how this planning money will be rolled out and when,” she said. “We need this redevelopment and we need the Government to tell us exactly how they’re going to fund it and the Budget is the first opportunity to. “This hospital is in desperate need of this redevelopment with the booming suburbs of Caddens and Jordan Springs, that’s putting more and more pressure on Nepean Hospital every day.” Mr Secord said the growing community needs the hospital upgrade, and he and Ms Car will hold the Government to their

ANZAC Day

Students will always remember St Josephs Public School unveils new commemorative garden JADE ALIPRANDI

@jade_aliprandi

t Josephs Public School has remembered those who have served and are continuing to serve our country with the introduction of a monument garden as well as a commemorative ceremony, held last Friday. Students were given the task of choosing which plants would go into the garden with an end result of Rosemary, Rose of Remembrance, Gardenias, Lilly Pillys and Star Jasmine, all reflective of ANZAC Day and all having their own unique meaning. Staff of the school used the school holidays to develop the garden and to get it ready before the commemorative ceremony, which was held in the first week back at school. “I would like to thank everyone here who has helped make this a very special commemorative ceremony,” Principal, Fran Jackson said. “This garden, I’m sure, will be here for many years to come and will help us in remembering those who have served and are currently serving.” Students also worked on a project titled ‘St Marys Served’ where they were given war veterans by St Marys RSL to research. The information the students found

This car crashed into a house at St Marys A 16-year-old unaccompanied learner driver crashed a car into a house at St Marys last Friday morning, with his teenage passenger suffering serious spinal injuries. Just after 10am on Friday, April 24, emergency services were called to Kenny Avenue after a vehicle, travelling on a straight stretch of road, crashed into a fence and the front of a house. The house was unoccupied at the time. The two occupants of the vehicle were taken to hospital. The driver suffered non-life threatening injuries. His 16-year-old front-seat passenger suffered serious spinal and head injuries. A gas main was ruptured, and had to be cut off, but no evacuations were required. Police are investigating witness reports that speed may have been a factor in the crash. Police are urging anyone with information to call 1800 333 000.

The new garden at St Josephs Public School was put together and made into a book full of stories from the past. “It’s been an amazing experience to be involved in as the children have progressed throughout the process and made connections with the past,” Religious Education Coordinator, Mark Aggar said. “They’ve been able to make it real for themselves through the projects they have undertaken including St Marys Served.” Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott was

invited to unveil the plaque the school placed in the new garden, which sits on a sandstone block as a way to commemorate the 100 years since the first landing at Gallipoli. “I thought it was really beautiful and very respectful,” Ms Scott said. “The plants in the garden complement each other well and what ANZAC Day means.” The school also welcomed two members from St Marys RSL and a current serviceman to the service.

It’s been just over 12 months since the Federal Government announced Sydney’s second airport would be built on our doorstep at Badgerys Creek, bringing decades of speculation to an end. As more information comes to light, we’re realising the proposed airport is emerging as a true 21st century operation, equal to the best around the world in terms of passenger management and technology. It will be Sydney’s second airport in name only, the Federal Government has committed to an airport that will provide for long term aviation capacity in the Sydney basin and optimise employment and investment in western Sydney. In Penrith, we need to position ourselves to capitalise on the opportunities for economic growth, tourism and infrastructure the airport represents. Because of the airport proposal in this region we’re seeing real investment in the $200 million local roads program and $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Package. Work has started on widening The

Northern Road to four lanes between Campbelltown and the M4 and the $70 million Werrington arterial is well underway. From an employment perspective, the majority of developable land in the Broader Western Sydney Employment Area adjoining the airport is in the Penrith Local Government Area. There is already significant interest from developers who recognise the potential this location offers. In recent months Council has heard from experts in the fields of airport management, noise and air pollution, infrastructure and planning. An Environmental Impact Statement is currently being prepared and is due later this year. We’ll be reviewing this closely and responding. In the meantime we will continue to push for the infrastructure we need to be delivered ahead of the airport and we will work with developers and the Government to ensure the best possible outcomes for our city.

Concerns over housing plan for Penrith Lakes DALE DRINKWATER

@daledrinkwater

n the wake of the treacherous Sydney storms, concerns over proposed housing in the low lying Penrith Lakes development are bigger than ever, with both Councillors and residents up in arms. Penrith Council’s Draft Vision Plan, that was submitted to the Office of Penrith Lakes last week, said it hopes to create an area where people can easily access water recreation, sporting events and environmental experiences, as well as provide a place to celebrate festivals. The report, however, outlined that this couldn’t be done unless Penrith Lakes’ water quality is sustained. Councillor Kevin Crameri questioned how this would be maintained with housing in the development. “They were going to have these houses and that would ‘bum’ the water quality... but if there’s no water, there’s no ‘water world’ and that’s a loss to Penrith,” he said. It is proposed the Penrith Lakes development will host almost 5000 homes on the low lying floodplain that was once Australia’s largest quarry. “It’s just another massive housing development that will make life miserable for Penrith residents and will bring traffic

I

moving around and across Penrith to a standstill,” Emu Plains local, Todd Wainwright said. “The 4900 houses that the Penrith Lakes Development Corporation is proposing will result in tens of thousands of extra cars on our roads.” David Bowen of Cambridge Gardens said residents believed the Lakes Scheme was intended to become a world class recreation facility, not a mega housing estate on a floodplain. “In 2006, the SES stated concerns that a flood in this area could put thousands of lives at risk,” he said. Councillor Marcus Cornish echoed these concerns in a meeting last week, and added he finds it disturbing the State Government will build on a floodplain. “I don’t think it should be even built on as residential, people have forgotten how bad floods can get in Penrith,” he said. “The State Government is getting us [Council] to do all sorts of flood plans and I find it very disturbing they would override safety and build on it.” Councillors also made some additions to the Plan for Penrith Lakes Parkland, to now include a botanical garden and koala park. Councillors accepted the proposed submission but highlighted the need for these further environmental factors.

s experts predict higher levels of flu this winter, local general practitioners are urging our most vulnerable to come forward and get their free influenza vaccination. NSW Health indicated there is already a spike in the number of influenza cases this year, and Regentville doctor Adrian Sheen has welcomed a Government reminder encouraging community members to get vaccinated. “Even though vaccinations don’t stop everyone, they’ve proved to be really effective and make an enormous difference,” Dr Sheen said. “They are freely available and essential, everyone should get it, or at least everyone should consider having it.” Vaccinations were made available slightly later this year due to emerging strains in the northern hemisphere, but Dr Sheen said it’s important to get on board and regularly get vaccinated. “The composition of influenza varies from year to year so we have to take the best advice,” he said. “Influenza is always around, and we always see it. It’s just as well the majority of people get influenza shots which makes a huge difference.” Those eligible include people aged 65

On Sunday, May 17, the community will come together at Regatta Park, Emu Plains to ‘Shine a Light’ on discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. Pastor of The Open Door Church in Cranebrook, Sue Palmer has held similar

meets with the LGBT community, but said this international day will bring many groups together on a much bigger scale. “It’s about bringing together a number of our different LGBT groups that are currently meeting in western Sydney from Parramatta to Penrith,” she said. Pr Palmer said the day will have a focus on keeping people safe and comfortable when they are going through transitional stages of their life, such as coming out to the community. “Teenagers are coming out at younger and younger age,” she said. “We need to know what is going on in

our schools that keeps our young ones safe when they’re going through that coming out period – it’s such a hard time.” Pr Palmer meets every Sunday with The Open Door Church, and said almost 90 per cent of attendees are LGBT who feel safer meeting with like minded people. “There are so many layers of [harassment and bullying] in the community,” she said. “We want a heightened awareness for our western Sydney communities of what homophobia can look like on different levels.” On the day, there will be a free Picnic

in the Park from 11am to 3pm, a play area for kids with a photo booth, plus performances from Sheryl Scharkie and Jye Bryant and Friends. “We’ll also have LayDee KinMeee, she hosts our Tuesday trivia nights at the Top Pub, but she’s also well known for yodelling so I’m pretty sure she’ll give us a number or two,” Pr Palmer said. “We’ve organised a picnic with Penrith City Council who are providing a free BBQ for everybody.” A Penrith City Council spokesperson confirmed they will be sponsoring the food costs of the BBQ for this event.

Local radio show offers an education in a range of topics Penrith is well and truly on the airwaves with radio station WOW-FM and their McCarthy Radio show that is now building a loyal following. Careers Advisor and teacher Craig Laffin from McCarthy Catholic College in Emu Plains uses his Mondays to present the program from the studios in St Marys. “We discuss topics and events with teachers and students from Department of Education schools, the Catholic system and Christian schools located between the Blue Mountains and Penrith to highlight what educators do best,” Mr Laffin said. A former McCarthy student and WOW-FM producer, Darren McErlain,

appeared on the show recently to share his stories about working in the media. “I am grateful for WOW-FM for giving me that initial start in Penrith radio – I am always honoured to make a contribution to radio in my hometown of 40 years,” he said. Children have also been given the opportunity to undertake work experience at the station with McCarthy Catholic College parent Teresa Rowinski’s son Aidan taking photos and videos of school activities for the station. “Aidan’s experience on the radio station WOW-FM has been an eye opener – he had the opportunity to see how a live

studio works, the insight of what goes on behind the scenes before you’d hit the microphone,” Mrs Rowinski said. “It also opens the door for future employment whether in a radio or TV studio as Aidan would like to see himself working behind the scenes at a TV studio such as Channel 9.” The McCarthy show also talks about a range of topics from teaching and learning, business, careers, sport as well as other topics that benefit those in education, primarily. The show airs on Monday nights from 6pm to 7pm on WOW-FM 100.7. – Jade Aliprandi

Push to get rid of mental health stigma SANE Australia calls on Federal Government to implement long-term campaign to tackle vital issue DALE DRINKWATER

@daledrinkwater

Penrith woman has welcomed SANE Australia’s call for a national campaign to tackle the stigma that surrounds mental illnesses. SANE has urged the Federal Government to put in place a five year campaign to reduce the stigma that they believe plays a huge role in preventing people getting early help. 62-year-old Joanne was diagnosed with complex post-traumatic stress disorder three years ago, and said mental illness is hard enough to accept yourself, let alone everyone around you. “I have experienced stigma towards my own mental health illness. I still have a problem to this day with accepting that I need to take medication,” she said. “Many, many people are still suffering because of the stigma of their families, they don’t want their families to know, particularly their partners.” When asked what stigma feels like, Joanne responded bluntly with an immediate, “shame”. “It’s not something we should be ashamed of. Is a person with cancer ashamed? Is a person who has broken

A

their leg ashamed? No,” she added. Joanne said she experienced this stigma when she was first diagnosed, and said although it’s still there, it’s getting easier to accept. “The first thing is knowing that something is wrong if you don’t feel well or you’re not eating, or you isolate yourself,” she said. “The stigma from myself about going to see [a doctor] has lessened and lessened, and I’ve learnt to ignore those people who are ignorant of what mental health illnesses are.” Joanne is currently not working due to a physical injury, but said she is concerned for the people who are suffering and trying to get on with life. SANE CEO Jack Heath said social contact is the best way to reduce stigma, and it needs to be the centrepiece of the national campaign, especially in the workplace. “More employers now appreciate the need to provide a mentally healthy workplace... but we still have a very long way to go in reducing stigma,” he said. “For all the progress we’ve made in understanding depression, we have made virtually no progress in reducing the stigma about the poorly understood psychotic illnesses”

Penrith resident Joanne hopes there will be a national focus on reducing stigma surrounding mental illness. Photo: Melinda Jane

COUNCIL SNAPSHOT Penrith City Childrens Services Cooperative (PCCSC) will take over the management of the Glenmore Park Child and Family Centre (GPCFC). Penrith Council recommended the PCCSC take over the management holistically until a review is undertaken to decide the centre’s future options, focusing on developing all three children, community and professional areas. The GPCFC is a purpose built centre that facilitates integration between children, work and family, offering long day care for up to six-year-old children and professional suites for practitioners and businesses to hire out. The centre is well established, but needs staff to focus on activating the outdoor community area and marketing both the professional suites and community rooms. The PCCSC aims to underpin its original purpose to integrate the child and family aspects of the centre with subsidy from Council of $75,000 over two years, and the PCCSC’s further sustainable management strategies. Penrith Council has placed a bid to hold the 2017 Australian Local Government Women’s Association State Conference, that could showcase Penrith to around 200 state delegates. The successful Council is required to WW16824

contribute Council-owned facilities and staff, provide meals, and seek out sponsorship to provide additional income to the conference. The conference has stringent requirements, and the successful Council must be able to provide 80 hotel rooms per night for the duration of the conference at a minimum of three star standard. The cost of hosting the conference is estimated at $90,000, which will be offset by registration costs for attendees and sponsorship. Council has endorsed the bid, and the cost will be included in the 2016-2017 budget. Council has been offered an additional $143,743 from the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) to help fund a pedestrian and cycle bridge at Peach Tree Creek on Jamison Road, Penrith. The funding will cover half of the project’s cost, that totals $287,486 excluding GST, and will be made available to Council by the end of 2014/2015 financial year. The bridge will cross the Peach Tree Creek, providing the missing link between two paths on Jamison Road from the completed section at Tench Reserve on the west, to Jamison Park on the east. Council will now write to the RMS and the Minister for Roads regarding their appreciation to their commitment to the local paths projects.

Road Safety

Technology to improve road safety Locals invited to take part in nationwide study that will provide insight into our behaviour on the roads JADE ALIPRANDI

@jade_aliprandi

n an attempt to prevent crashes and accidents on the roads, residents of the Penrith area are invited to take part in a naturalistic driving study. Road Safety experts will be using information and data collected from the study to form new and innovative ways they can help prevent crashes on the roads. Around 360 vehicles that will be involved in the program will be fitted with a data collection system for four months that will silently record where the participant is looking while driving, what their speed is and where they are sitting in the lane, and the behaviour of other road users who they interact with including other drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. The data collection system will consist of video cameras, a still camera, a GPS, a radar and accelerometers. The equipment will provide a complete picture of the driver, vehicle and road user behaviour in all driving situations. University of NSW Study Leader, Professor Raphael Grzebieta, said it’s great to see Australia joining road safety researchers across the globe. “For the first time, we’ll be able to watch

I

An example of the equipment to be fitted to the vehicles hundreds of drivers, and see from their perspective what is happening in and around their vehicle and how this influences their decisions,” he said. “This knowledge will help us to make the roads safer for you and your family.”

Participants are expected to have between five and seven hours available for the team to install the equipment in their vehicle, undertake a consent and driver assessment process, drive as they normally would for a period of four

months, not to tamper with or intentionally damage the study equipment and to have around one hour available at the end of the four months for the equipment to be uninstalled. Transport for NSW Manager of Road Safety Technology, John Wall, said researchers will be able to gain a better insight into driver behaviours thanks to the idea. “Road safety researchers will have a better understanding of driver behaviour and will be provided with crucial information on what happens before, during and after a crash or near miss,” he said. “Road safety experts will be able to gain insight on circumstances that are often difficult to measure, such as driver distraction and fatigue.” It is anticipated the study will be completed in 2018 when all vehicles have driven for four months and all the data has been analysed, with the results available in late 2018. Approximately 180 vehicles from NSW and 180 vehicles from Victoria will take part in the study. For more information and to register your interest, visit the Australian Naturalistic Driving Study website at www.ands. unsw.edu.au.

Students at Henry Fulton Public School get eye-opening lesson in water conservation DALE DRINKWATER

@daledrinkwater

lass 3/4E of Cranebrook’s Henry Fulton Public School proved you don’t have to know much about water conservation to be really passionate about it. The composite class participated in a lively ‘Saving Water’ workshop with Keep NSW Beautiful EnviroMentor Marc Harper last week, where they learnt the importance of water and the simple ways to save it. Mr Harper said the workshop is about teaching children sustainability initiatives they can take to the future such as getting out of the shower after one song, if you listen to music, and using the soapy water to hydrate plants. “Soap actually has nutrients in it that is okay for plants and grass,” he said. EnviroMentors have been working on the initiative for 21 years, delivering messages to over 40,000 children annually that prove highly engaging. “Pre-pre-ci-preci-precipipation,” yelled one enthusiastic student trying to guess what the ‘special word’ for rain was. When asked, students recalled what they had learnt in the 45 minute workshop,

C

Class 3/4E of Henry Fulton Public School learning how to save water

with some adorable answers. “Don’t flush tissues down the toilet,” one student said. “When you water plants the sun tries to steal it,” said another. “We are using the same water that dinosaurs were using,” said a third. Students were shocked when they found out they were consuming water old enough to have been through seven other people before reaching them. “That’s disgusting,” yelled one horrified little boy. Class 3/4 E’s teacher, Mrs Ellul said she was very proud at how enthusiastic her students were. “They’re so engaged. It really makes them think about the world around them, what they can do to help the environment and the small things they’re capable of doing,” she said. “They’re such lovely students, they have such a natural love for learning, just like the school.” Henry Fulton Public School is one of eight schools in the area that are a part of this round of school incursions from Keep NSW Beautiful. The mobile workshops have been running locally for just five years in conjunction with Penrith City Council.

New ramp will make a big difference for Bailey DALE DRINKWATER

@daledrinkwater

fter the next school holidays, Bailey (surname withheld) will be able to access classrooms at St Dominic’s College easier than ever, with the installation of a new access ramp. The Kingswood private school has long struggled with access between two second level buildings, that currently requires students in wheelchairs to travel all the way around the quadrangle, when the rest of the students can walk down less than 10 stairs. “Currently Bailey can get around, but between two particular buildings it would take him quite a bit of time because he has to go all the way around,” St Dominic’s Principal, Michael Ronchetti said. The Federal Government announced $68,601 of funding to go towards a disability access ramp between the buildings that St Dominic’s will need to contribute to for completion. “The whole project hasn’t been totally funded, the school still needs to provide the rest to make up around $110,000 for the whole project,” Mr Ronchetti said. “We have to structurally change a few things, we’ve got to put piers in and make

A

sure the roof goes over it so Bailey and anyone else can go right around the school without getting wet.” Mr Ronchetti said the work on the new access ramp is expected to begin at the end of this school term, and take about four weeks to complete, depending on weather. “To minimise the disruption to students, we are looking at the end of this term, with the finalisation at the beginning of next term,” he said. Year 9 student, Bailey, said he was very happy about the ramp as it would make it easier for him to get around the school. Federal Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott said the ramp will not only help Bailey, but will enable all students to have better access to areas in the school. “The whole school community will benefit from improved access for all students to learning areas,” she said. “I am delighted this particular project has been approved for construction outside the annual schedule process of the Capital Grants Programme.” Catholic, government and independent schools are expected to receive a record $65.4 billion from the Australian Government over the next four years, a $4 billion increase from 2014-2017.

hite Shirt Day is today, May 1, and it is all about raising awareness for women with ovarian cancer, the sixth most common cancer attributed to female cancer deaths. Fashion store Witchery launched its month-long campaign in early April which included the store selling women’s and men’s white shirts with 100 per cent of the gross proceeds going to the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation. White Shirt Day is a day to create awareness about ovarian cancer as it follows on from the campaign. This type of cancer is hard to detect early with over 80 per cent of women already in the advanced stages of the disease when diagnosed. Director for Nepean Cancer Care Centre, Dr Jenny Shannon, said there was no reliable screening method, making it difficult to catch. “Early diagnosis is often difficult, so knowing and recognising the symptoms is crucial as early detection can improve the chance of survival,” she said. “The symptoms can include, but are not limited to, lower abdominal or pelvic pain, abdominal swelling or persistent bloating, fatigue, the need to urinate often or urgently and feeling full after

Most tuition centres are franchises. The Tuition Place is independent and local. This gives you three important advantages: 1. Teaching methods and resources are tailored for the children of the Penrith area, not dictated by a franchisor from far away. 2. If you have special requirements, things can be adapted for you quickly. Today is White Shirt Day eating a small meal.” The message about ovarian cancer will also be spread through social media by using the hash tag ‘white shirt campaign’. Penrith residents are invited to the Sydney Opera House today at 4.30pm in a show of solidarity in raising awareness about ovarian cancer. “Any initiatives that raise awareness of ovarian cancer and its symptoms, or raises funds to assist research, are a positive thing for women,” Dr Shannon said.

3. The tuition is more affordable, because a big chunk of what you pay doesn’t go straight to a franchisor.

@daledrinkwater

enrith Older Womens Network (OWN) has held a luncheon for their members to celebrate 20 years of encouraging older women to engage in their local community. Penrith OWN Convenor, Thelma Anderson, has been on the committee for 20 years, and has been empowering older women to remain active in the community since its inception. “I felt I had to get them out there and be active and forget – to not worry about what’s around – but be somewhere we could be comfortable with one another,” she said. The group of 40 meet every week

P

during school terms to participate in wellness classes such as aqua exercise, yoga, Thai Chi and international dance. Over the last 20 years, they have worked closely with members of the community, like teaching sewing and craft to mothers at Emu Plains Correctional Centre and operating a drop-in centre at Penrith Health Centre. Penrith City Council’s Diane Boyd visited the luncheon and said the Penrith OWN is extremely valuable to the women involved. “They really feel that the social connection is so important to their own well being, so Council supports them by providing accommodation and moral support so they can continue to meet,” she said.

Panthers too good for Sharks The Sharks came to Penrith Stadium hoping to extend their three match winning streak, but the Panthers had other ideas

TROY DODDS troydodds

I

njury-ravaged Penrith got their season back on track last Sunday when they downed the in-form Sharks 26-18 at Pepper Stadium in front of almost 13,000 fans. It was an important win for the Panthers who are now back in the top eight and have won four from their opening eight matches – the same number of wins they secured in the corresponding period last year. The Panthers were down 18-12 at the break but produced a near flawless second half to score 14 unanswered points and shut the Sharks out of the contest. “We’ve definitely had a rough few weeks, down a few troops and lost a little bit of confidence, so it was a bit of a shot in the arm,” Panthers coach Ivan Cleary said of the win. “We were pretty controlled throughout the game I thought. I thought we gifted them points in the first half, which was obviously disappointing, I thought we had every right to be ahead at half-time. “I thought we controlled the ball well and we kicked better in the second half. the Sharks were going to do anything they were going to have to do it for themselves and I think that was the difference.” Cleary can now focus on the middle part of the season where at some point, the Panthers will welcome back a range of injured troops including Jamie Soward, James Segeyaro, Peter Wallace, Brent Kite, Elijah Taylor, Dean Whare and Josh Mansour. The Panthers have more than $2 million worth of talent sitting on the sidelines injured, but only Jamal Idris won’t be back this year. “I think we play four games in seven or eight weeks so somewhere in there we’ll start getting some troops back,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of disruption, a lot of players missing – hopefully we can get some continuity back because we won the first two games and I thought that was based around the synergy of our team and the combinations and since then we haven’t had that.” Stand-in captain and man of the match Lewis Brown said it was a fantastic team effort against the Sharks. “We shared the workload today and our game plan was very simple – to complete sets and get into the arm wrestle,” the New Zealand international said.

Latimore may have been shaken by the incident but he was medically fine and it didn’t take long for him to return. Heighington was charged with a Grade 3 Dangerous Throw by the Match Review Committee on Monday and has been suspended for three matches.

squad had their jerseys presented to them by Sergeant Damien Brown last Sunday. He’s a Special Forces member who has been deployed to both Timor and Iraq. It added to what was a fantastic day at Pepper Stadium on Sunday with the Penrith club, like all NRL clubs who hosted matches over the ANZAC weekend, doing a fantastic job in honouring the Australian men and women who have served our country.

» Lewis Brown may be 28-years-old with

more than 130 first grade games to his name, but last Sunday’s match against Cronulla marked the first time he’s ever received a Man of the Match award. It was also his first time captaining the Panthers – the club’s fourth on-field captain this season!

» Penrith’s win over Cronulla was the

most watched pay television program on Sunday, attracting 175,000 viewers on Fox Sports. Talking of TV ratings, what’s going on with the A-League? Last Saturday night’s match between the Wanderers and Perth Glory couldn’t even beat a re-run of the 1987 romantic flick ‘Dirty Dancing’, which had 48,000 viewers.

» Penrith’s halves crisis is most likely at

an end with Jamie Soward expected to be named on Tuesday to play Brisbane next Friday night at Suncorp Stadium. The only question now is whether coach Ivan Cleary persists with Isaac John as his halves partner until Peter Wallace returns, or goes with the Soward and Will Smith partnership that guided the Panthers to within one win of a grand final last year. Elijah Taylor and Dean Whare are also likely to be back against Brisbane.

Trainer Ron Palmer speaks with Jeremy Latimore on Sunday rith Stadium but something slipped up last weekend – Phil ‘Buzz’ Rothfield was somehow allowed into the ground.

» The release of the special ANZAC jersey

has helped the Panthers record some incredible merchandise sales over the last couple of months. In fact, I’m told that sales of all merchandise in the opening two months of the season is up so much, that it could be a record.

» Security is normally pretty good at Pen- » The Men of League Foundation and

Panthers will combine for a great night to help former rugby league player Ray Blacklock. Blacklock started his career at Penrith 1976, playing four seasons with the club and captaining the Under 23’s side to its 1978 premiership. He’s fallen on tough times and this upcoming event will be a great opportunity for the rugby league community to show how much they care. The event is on Saturday, May 23 at the Panthers Pavilion. By George, he’s back! An injury to winger Josh Mansour has again given George Jennings an opportunity to shine in first grade

NATHAN TAYLOR natetaylor87

G

un Penrith winger George Jennings has praised fellow winger and Panthers veteran David Simmons for making him a better player. The 21-year-old, who returned to first grade last week, singled out 30-yearold Simmons and recent Australian Test winger Josh Mansour for helping improve his game. “Some of the boys like Sauce and David Simmons give me advice, they help out a lot,” Jennings revealed to Extra Time. “Sometimes I speak to my brother [Michael] but we really don’t talk about footy too much.” Jennings, who has played three first grade games to date, believes the 188-game veteran in Simmons would make a great ‘wing coach’ when his career is finally over. “Dave’s helped me out a lot with little things like discipline and my defence. At training he sees what we’re doing and he tells us how we can get better. It’s helped out a lot, he’s awesome,” Jennings said. Meanwhile, it was a successful return to the top grade for Jennings last weekend.

bonded with the team and I’m just happy to be back,” he said. “From that initial stint in first grade I learnt how to prepare throughout the week and how to mentally get ready for it. “That first game, I didn’t really know what to expect until I ran out on the field, but now I do.” During Jennings’ five week absence in the top grade, his 19-year-old brother Robert Jennings made his top grade debut.

The local junior, who was once again filling in for an injured Josh Mansour, played in Penrith’s opening two games of the season before returning to the NSW Cup upon Mansour’s return. With Mansour expected to be out for up to six weeks with a knee injury, Jennings is hoping to make the wing position his own – even if it’s only for the short term. “My debut still feels like yesterday… it was only two games but it felt like I really

FINDING THE COMPETITIVE EDGE ne of my main responsibilities here at Panthers is driving the organisation to secure a sustainable competitive edge. Why is this such a key focus of our organisation and why do I deem this to be such an integral part of our strategy for the now and moving forward? Having the capability to create a competitive advantage is the ability to stay ahead of present or potential competition, thus superior performance reached through competitive advantage will ensure the Panthers remain leaders in the market or space we exist in. Also it provides the understanding that resources held by our organisation and the business strategy will have a profound impact on generating competitive advantage. As an organisation, we are already planning strategically for 2016 and how to ensure that we maintain our competitive advantages, whether it is in membership, merchandise, corporate partnership, game day or any other commercial category. Externally we are always looking at benchmarking ourselves against other elite organisations that perform best practices in other codes. This is a key part of our strategy to maintain our competitive advantage and it would be negligent not to look not only domestically but internationally at other elite organisations and how they maintain their competitive advantage, whether across administration, commercial, high performance, coaching, medical or technology. Competitive advantage is a key determinant of superior performance and it will ensure survival and prominent placing in the market. KEV’S KORNER

W FUTURE IS IN VERY SAFE HANDS

ith eight rounds of the NRL, NSW Cup and NYC seasons done and dusted, and with the Representative Round upon us, it’s a perfect time to mention the successful year our Harold Matthews and SG Ball sides have had, with both making the finals. The Matts boys finished the regular season in seventh position after winning four games and drawing one. They were knocked out in the first week of the finals after facing a strong Souths team, who eventually pipped them at the post in a 22-20 nail-biter. It was a sad end to a good season but no-one can knock the boys for their effort and attitude. A couple of standouts to mention were Shannon Harris, Thomas Lofts, Dylan McBain and Jake Tago. Despite a disappointing start, our SG Ball team soon found their feet and made a massive charge towards the finals, finishing the regular season third with six wins, one draw and one loss. They only lost one game the entire season, which is a real credit to the playing group and first time coach Ben Harden. Penrith won their first finals series match 26-14 and they play the Sharks this weekend for a spot in the Grand Final. Carl Winterstein, Nathan Cleary, Jerome Luai, Liam Martin, Wade Egan, Reed Izzard and Daniel Brown have all had brilliant seasons so far. These results are a good indication of the local talent we have coming up through

Bryce Cartwright is a proud local junior the Penrith District Junior Rugby League system. The Panthers have a raft of local juniors who have become regular fist graders as a result of their development in our Matts and SG Ball squads, including Matt Moylan, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, Bryce

Cartwright , George Jennings and younger brother Rob. All have been regular fixtures in our NRL and NSW Cup teams over the past two years and most have been selected in representative sides this weekend. Good luck to everyone!

How much does one

cage egg really cost?

You wouldn’t keep your pet like this. But hidden away in sheds across Australia, hens who are just as smart and sensitive as the family pet spend every waking moment in a cage — all for the sake of a cheap egg. She cannot sit comfortably or stretch her wings. Without the ability to exercise, her body is weak. Chances are that she, or one of her cage mates, is living

with an untreated broken bone. But trapped in a cage, in a shed with thousands of cages, no-one is ever likely to notice. Here she will spend 30 long hours to produce just one cage egg. The first time she will see the outside world — the world she was meant to live in — will be on the last day of her life, as she is trucked to the slaughterhouse.

Proud Panthers on show Matt Moylan heads a long list of Panthers players who will take on representative duties this weekend

NATHAN TAYLOR natetaylor87

T

here was once a time, not too long ago, when the Panthers were criticised for not having any representative players on their roster. But those times are long left in the past with 17 Penrith players chosen to represent various sides during this weekend’s NRL Representative Round. On Friday night when Australia take on New Zealand at Suncorp Stadium, Penrith’s Lewis Brown will be the only Panther representing the Kiwis against the Kangaroos after Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, who was selected to make his long-awaited Test debut, was forced to withdraw from the game due to suspension. The one game ban was another huge blow for the 19-year-old, who was also forced to withdraw from the Four Nations last November with a fractured foot. In the weekend’s other big match, Penrith will have five players represent City Origin who will take on Country Origin in Wagga Wagga on Sunday. This year’s City Country match is seen as a true Origin selection game with a number of NSW positions still up for grabs.

City Slickers: Waqa Blake, Reagan Campbell-Gillard, Matt Moylan, Bryce Cartwright and Tyrone Peachey. Photo: Anthony Johnson Matt Moylan, Waqa Blake, Tyrone Peachey and Reagan Campbell-Gillard will all represent City while Bryce Cartwright will act as 18th man. Two Pacific Test matches will take place at Cbus Super Stadium on the Gold Coast this Saturday with Fiji taking on Papua New Guinea and Tonga battling Samoa. Penrith hooker Apisai Koroisau is the lone Panther in the Fiji squad while Panthers lower graders Wellington Albert

‘

and Stanton Albert will represent PNG. In the night’s other Test, Penrith’s Sika Manu will captain the Tongan team with fellow Panthers backrower Ben MurdochMasila joining the bench. Meanwhile, rookie Rob Jennings will play for the Junior Kangaroos; James Fisher-Harris and Sione Katoa the Junior Kiwis; and Sam Anderson and Leilani Latu will play for the VB NSW Cup Representative Team against Queensland Residents.

DALLIN OUTED FOR ONE GAME Penrith winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak will miss out on making his Test debut for New Zealand after he was charged with a Grade One Dangerous Throw by the NRL’s Match Review Committee. The incident happened late in Penrith’s 26-18 win over Cronulla last weekend. Watene-Zelezniak opted not to fight the charge even though the suspension length wouldn’t have changed if he lost the case at the judiciary. Watene-Zelezniak will be free to play for Penrith against Brisbane next week.

WEEK OFF WELL DESERVED AFTER PENRITH THRASH HAPLESS CRONULLA 34-4 The Penrith Panthers are now outright second heading into this weekend’s representative round following a 34-4 demolition of the Cronulla Sharks last Sunday. The 15th placed Sharks were no match for the high flying Panthers who put on a spectacular performance in front of their home crowd at Pepper Stadium. Cameron Ciraldo’s men were at their dominant best from start to finish, opening the scoring in the second minute through James Fisher-Harris, who took a great offload from Fuimanu Enise and then proceeded to carry a number of Sharks defenders over the line to score. Penrith led 4-0 after missing the conversion. Not too long after the Panthers scored their second of the morning when big man Oliver Clark charged onto a short pass from Tyrone May to crash over the line. This time Penrith made the conversion to lead 10-0. Not much transpired for both sides over the next 15 minutes, that was until Tyone May scooped up an offload from FisherHarris 40m out to race away and score a remarkable individual try. Penrith once again made the conversion to lead 16-0. The Sharks managed to post their first

points before the end of the half through winger Levi Sopi, but the Panthers weren’t done with scoring themselves with May finding Soni Luke who dummied his way over the line for his first try of the game. Following another successful conversion, Penrith led 22-4 at the break. Due to some careless errors it took Penrith a while to warm back into the match during the early part of the second half, but when they finally did, it was all too easy. Maliko Filino extended Penrith’s lead in the 54th minute when he took a pretty short-side pass to score in the corner. Penrith made the conversion to lead 28-4. Shortly after the Panthers were in again after the brilliant May cut out two defenders with a high pass that landed in Enese’s hands, who got himself his first try. Corey Harawira-Naera was once again perfect with the boot, which saw Penrith win the game with ease 34-4. Penrith will now join the rest of the Holden Cup with a week’s rest before they battle the top of the table Brisbane Broncos next Friday night at Suncorp Stadium.

NSW CUP

BY STEW MOSES

@TheRiffMarn

PATCHED UP PANTHERS END UNBEATEN RUN OF MOUNTIES AND EDGE CLOSER TO TOP OF THE TABLE It’s not often you go into a game against the top team in any competition with a centre playing his first senior game at fullback, a hooker playing his first ever game at five-eighth and a prop playing out in the centres for the first time. But that’s exactly what Penrith did, relying on a simple game-plan built around a deep kick-chase game and their defence, the best in the NSW Cup, to end Mounties’ seven game unbeaten run and move within a game of top spot with a gritty 16-10 win. Despite the stormy conditions that required play to be temporarily suspended early in the second half, the game was a gripping affair played with a level of intensity that matched the hype surrounding the clash between the competition’s two best teams so far in 2015. There was mixed news for Penrith when David Simmons and Will Smith withdrew from the side in order to play first grade but regained the services of Tupou Sopoaga and Sam Anderson in a side forced to play several players out of position. As was the case in the previous two games, Penrith got off to a slow start and trailed 10-0 after 25 minutes through tries to Bill Tupou and Mitch Barnett but once again, the Panthers clicked into gear late

in the first half. A 40/20 kick from Sam Scarlett into the wind, allowed the Panthers to open their account after Brendan Attwood scored an individual try from 10 metres out in the 29th minute, before scores were level at half-time courtesy of some Robert Jennings magic. The defining moment of the game came in the 53rd minute when Bill Tupou was crunched in a tackle from Ben MurdochMasila close to his own line, with Tom Eisenhuth on hand to pounce on the loose ball and dive over in the corner to put Penrith in the lead for the first time. Mounties dominated field territory but were denied repeatedly by resolute Penrith defence, before Penrith sealed the win in the 73rd minute through a Katoa penalty goal. Penrith’s NSW Cup team was rewarded for its consistency with the following representative selections; Sam Anderson, Leilani Latu (VB NSW Cup representative team – coached by none other than Garth Brennan), Ben Murdoch-Masila (Tonga – with Brennan’s assistant coach, David Tangata-Toa, the Tongan Assistant Coach), Robert Jennings (Junior Kangaroos), Sione Katoa (Junior Kiwis) and Wellington Albert (PNG). Penrith have the weekend off.

Dream big and keep your vision in mind

More tips on using Instagram in your marketing plans

Michelle Grice // Founder of Shel Design

Michael Todd // Small Biz Connect Advisor Penrith Valley BEC

ost of us started our business with a vision. Most of us who have continued in business have done so because we have the personality type to dream big and re-imagine that original vision. Do you realise that this is a valuable trait to have? And how few people have it? In recent discussions with a variety of people, I have been reminded of how often people bemoan their situations but aren’t willing to do anything to change it. Or how some people have the ‘vision’ but aren’t prepared to take the risk or the leap of faith to make it a reality. Most people spend their time worrying about what might be lost in the process of change, rather than what might be gained. Others are waiting for the perfect solution to come along before they will change direction, and are content to use outdated methods or processes while they search. Although this can feel like the ‘responsible’ action to take, it generally

ends up costing organisations a great deal of time and money, not to mention the effect on staff morale. Every business has obstacles (i.e. the trees) that can make the forest (i.e. the vision) difficult to see. There is no point pretending the ‘trees’ aren’t there – if there are problems, they need to be addressed. But the key to a successful business is to acknowledge the areas that need to be overcome, without losing sight of the bigger picture. Jack Welch, former CEO of GE Electric put it this way: “You’ve got to eat while you dream. You’ve got to deliver on short-range commitments, while you develop a long-range strategy and vision and implement it. The success of doing both. Walking and chewing gum if you will. Getting it done in the short-range, and delivering a long-range plan, and executing on that.” So keep looking up at the forest! Don’t get bogged down in the short-term tasks or the obstacles. Remind yourself of your vision and take bold steps to make it happen. Have a great weekend!

A

s I covered last week, Instagram is a social media platform that is being included in some marketing plans and is proving to be effective. Instagram has four million monthly active users in Australia. Like most social media platforms, it has a youthful audience, with the largest percentage of users falling into the 18-34 year-old zone. Keep in mind that Instagram isn’t as strict as Twitter with its character limits when captioning a photo, but that doesn’t mean that you should be writing a novel beneath each post. Short, sweet, and effective is the approach I’d recommend when captioning your photos. Here is a continuation of tips on how to use Instagram for business: Respond to comments People love it when they are singled out and responded to. Make an effort to check in several times a week and reply. Image is everything, particularly when it comes to how they communicate. Creating and sharing visual content is not just second-nature,

it is how many learn about the world, discover their best selves and find a sense of belonging. Measure your likes You will understand your audience if you look at which images people are clicking that little heart button on. This can not only help you decide what kinds of images you want to post in the future, but it can also help you do a little market research for your products. Use blue to get more likes An interesting fact is that images on Instagram that had blue as the dominant colour get 24 per cent more likes than other colours. It’s all about psychology and appealing to your audience, and blue seems to win when it comes to attracting more attention! Be consistent Just like with any social media site, consistency is key. It is the same with most key business areas like customer service. Get into a regular system of posting pictures so you stay in front of your audience and they know when to expect new content from you.

The vinyl resurgence KATE REID @kate_reid6

T

he Black Sorrows frontman and talented solo artist Joe Camilleri loves vinyl. So it’s no surprise that he was chosen as the ambassador for Record Store Day, which was held on Saturday, April 18 to honour independent music stores. “I’m a record collector, I’ve been collecting records for 50 ‘blah blah’ years. So I guess they thought I was worthy of the task,” Camilleri said of his role.

Vinyl has experienced a recent resurgence, no doubt partly influenced by hipster culture which values vintage and bucks mainstream trends. While Camilleri admits there’s many opportunities that the Internet opens up for artists, he does feel that there is a social aspect to music selection that you can only get from a record store environment. “You’d go and buy a record and you’d think you’d like something and there’d be someone in the store that would lead you somewhere else and to me that’s a lost art,” he said. Besides the social aspect it’s the lack

of tangibility and ownership that irks Camilleri about digital music. “To me downloading something, I don’t believe I own it. I’ve paid for it but I don’t have a firm belief that it actually exists,” he said. “It’s sort of a shame really because it’s a one dimensional concept. You’ve got the music and that’s fine... but you don’t have the physical. You don’t get to be part of that particular group or artist in some way.” His views aren’t surprising when you consider that Camilleri puts everything he has into his music, going out of his way to ensure that listeners get more than just

a few songs to download from iTunes or other online music stores. “I control all the things that I do, from writing the songs to releasing the songs to doing the artwork, I get people to do it, but I work really hard trying to give someone an idea of what the project’s about,” he said. For The Black Sorrows’ latest albums, ‘Endless Sleep (Chapter 46)’ and ‘Endless Sleep (Chapter 47)’, the band decided to go with a vinyl-only release, a decision that wouldn’t have happened without Camilleri’s control over every aspect of the process. “No record company would do it, [they’re] too frightened to do it. But I’m my record company so I can do what I like,” he said. “I don’t want it on iTunes, I don’t want it on Spotify. I don’t want to talk to those people, I don’t care for them. It’s just one big massive conglomerate that pays an artist barely nothing for thousands and thousands of plays. It’s a disgrace. “There’s heart and soul [in vinyl/CD], there’s something that you can’t download and so I choose not to do that.” After the success of The Black Sorrows’ 2013 album ‘Certified Blue’ the band decided to put on hold the pressure of producing an equally successful follow up by releasing the ‘Endless Sleep’ LPs which pay tribute to artists including Lou Reed, John Coltrane, JJ Cale and Hank Williams. The album was Camelleri’s version of a record store recommendation for his fans. “I thought this would make a good fanbased record,” he said. “I’m a fan of these people and they’ve parted and maybe there’s a way of making their music live on. Some of my fans might really enjoy this because it’s not a giant step from what I do.” After the release of the LPs there appears to be no slowing down for The Black Sorrows who are currently working on songs for their next original release. Camilleri’s love for what he does is palpable and is expressed perfectly by a statement made to him by the band’s keyboard player. “He says [to me] ‘just stop being such a big music fan, it shits me, just stop it, I can’t stand it!’,” Camilleri laughed. The Black Sorrows will perform at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, June 5. Tickets are $35. Call 9625 5500 for details.

f you were alive in the 90’s and happened to be anywhere near a radio during that time then you’ll probably know the name Shaggy, or at least recognise his voice. The hip-hop reggae artist gave listeners plenty of ear-worm worthy hits including ‘It Wasn’t Me’, ‘Angel’, ‘In The Summertime’ and arguably his most well known track ‘Boombastic’. This month Mr Lover Lover will be bringing his distinct vocal stylings and catchy pop and dance tunes to Australia as part of a national tour including a gig at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, May 22. The Grammy award winner will perform all his hits including ‘Hey Sexy Lady’, ‘Boombastic’, ‘Luv Me, Luv Me’, ‘It Wasn’t Me’ and ‘Oh Carolina’, along with highlights from his most recent album, 2013’s ‘Out Of Many, One Music’. “I enjoy touring and I spend most of my time doing that,” Shaggy said. “I like getting in front of an audience and having that personal and intimate connection with fans.” Since his third album, 1995’s ‘Boombastic’ – which won Best Reggae Album at the

Grammy Awards in 1996 – launched him into super stardom, the Jamaican-born star has released seven albums including 2000’s ‘Hot Shot’ which went six times platinum and has sold a staggering 10 million copies worldwide. Shaggy has been receiving positive reviews for his current live tour. If you’re a 90’s kid then you won’t want to miss out on seeing Shaggy live! Ê For the first time in years, this Sunday’s Logie Awards will air live on Channel Nine. The move, which has been welcomed by the industry, will end the possibility of winners being leaked early on social media and will allow viewers to interact with the stars at the event. The Logies begin at 7pm with an edited Red Carpet show followed by the live broadcast of the event itself at 7.30pm. Ê A recent survey of 1217 Australians, conducted by Yahoo7, has revealed TV viewers are busy multitasking whilst watching TV, searching for more information on the shows they are watching. 74 per cent had sought out storylines, actor info and statistics on the shows they were watching, whilst 28 per cent sought images of celebrities and actors. 25 per cent wanted the latest gossip behind the stars. Seven in 10 watch TV with their mobile by their side, while 57 per cent have their laptop on-hand and 44 per cent their tablet. Guilty! Ê Last week I gave you official confirmation that the hit show ‘Full House’ was returning as a Netflix series titled ‘Fuller House’. This week I have more information on exactly what will be happening. In ‘Fuller House’,

the adventures that began in 1987 continue, with veterinarian D.J. Tanner-Fuller (Candace Cameron-Bure) pregnant and recently widowed, living in San Francisco. D.J.’s younger sister/ aspiring musician Stephanie Tanner (Jodie Sweetin) and D.J.’s lifelong best friend/ fellow single mother Kimmy Gibbler (Andrea Barber) along with Kimmy’s feisty teenage daughter Ramona, all move in to help take care of D.J.’s two boys – the rebellious 12-year-old J.D. and neurotic seven-year-old Max – and her soon-to-arrive baby. John Stamos will produce the series and reprise his original role of Uncle Jesse. Discussions with other original stars for guest appearances – Bob Saget, MaryKate and Ashley Olsen, Dave Coulier and Lori Loughlin – are ongoing. The 13 episode series will air next year.

Ê ‘The Real Housewives of Melbourne’ has been renewed for a third series after another successful season on Foxtel. No word yet on how many of the original cast will return, but it’s fair to say most will. Ê ‘Episodes’, the hilarious US/UK series starring Matt LeBlanc, has been renewed for a fourth series. ‘Episodes’ airs on Foxtel’s BBC First.

REVIEW W EI V E R

The Avengers: Age of Ultron Rated M // STEPHEN BISSET

It was always going to be a tough ask for writer/director Joss Whedon to replicate the comic book fan boy fever dream brilliance that was the first ‘Avengers’ flick. While he has given us a perfectly serviceable action hero flick, with oodles of jaw dropping set pieces, this time around it feels like more of the same. After we become reacquainted with the Avengers team – Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Black Widow, Captain America and Hawkeye – midway through a high-octane mission, in one of the most memorable opening scenes in recent memory, things quickly go awry for the team as Tony Stark tries to kickstart a dormant program designed to ensure the world’s safety. As is the case with these

MUSIC

things, instead of going according to plan, Stark inadvertently creates Ultron – a malevolent force hell-bent on ushering in the Earth’s destruction. Given that the Marvel universe has tended to go for a much less lighthearted oeuvre in recent times, many of Whedon’s one-liners and asides – particularly from Ultron (voiced by James Spader) – seem dated and hackneyed. That is not to say that this is a bad film – far from it. Put this up against any of the other Marvel flicks and they pale in comparison. It just feels like, this time around, much of the heart and soul that made the first outing so great was sorely lacking.

Blur

The Magic Whip It’s been more than a decade between albums for British indie rockers Blur. After their breakup in 2003 the band reunited in 2008 but it’s taken seven years for fans to get what they’ve been waiting for, the new album ‘The Magic Whip’. Blur began writing the album in Hong Kong and it definitely shows. Tracks like ‘Thought I Was A Spaceman’ perfectly evoke the melancholy of being lost in a foreign city. Standouts on the album include the lovely ‘My Terracotta Heart’ and the high energy 80’s tinged track ‘I Broadcast’. There’s also plenty of light moments on tracks like ‘Ong Ong’. It’s been a long wait for fans but ‘The Magic Whip’ sees Blur once again at the top of their game. It’s definitely worth picking up a copy of this album or downloading it, particularly if you were a fan of Blur during their successful days.

‘Annie’ is a 2014 remake of the classic comic strip turned popular Broadway musical. Annie (Quvenzhane Wallis) is a foster child who lives with the not-so-pleasant Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz). When Annie crosses paths with Will Stacks, a billionaire cell phone mogul

who is running for mayor, her life changes forever. Will decides to take Annie under his wing in the hopes that it will help his campaign and in the process he develops an affection for the lovable orphan. Unfortunately things don’t go to plan and Stacks risks losing Annie forever when impostors pose as her real parents in an attempt to kidnap her. Though the writers made a valiant attempt at creating a modern version of this classic story, what they ended up with was a rather mediocre film.

Quvenzhane does a great job as Annie but the rest of the characters are fairly one dimensional. The musical numbers are lacking in charm and the focus on materialism misses the point of the original story. It has its moments but overall ‘Annie’ is not the remake fans of the musical were looking for. It’s probably best avoided if you want to keep your love for the classic movie and musical in tact.

WINE LIST

Passion and dreams

B

ack in the 1990s Sam and Rachel Atkins (nee Fox,) David Cumming, Jane Gordon and Natasha Mooney had a dream, and that was to make, market and sell premium wines from the Barossa Valley and the Adelaide Hills that would one day sit amongst the great brands of the world as measured by value and enjoyment. Having learned their trade through working with some of Australia’s largest wine companies, today they’re well on the road to achieving that dream: their boutique Fox Gordon label, that they launched in 2000, recognises the founding women in the company through the surnames of Rachel and Jane, together with a logo of stylised images of Rachel and Natasha. And while already well on their road, they say they do not mind how much time it takes to fulfil their goals and dreams, nor the commitment, investment, belief and passion necessary to go with it. A rewarding drop reflecting these attributes and which they’ve just-recently released, is a Fox Gordon By George Cabernet Tempranillo 2012, a quite unusual blend that delivers rich blueberry and rhubarb fruit flavours together with sweet and juicy tannins. And it’s nicely priced at $22.95 to enjoy with a red duck curry or spicy paella. One to note: The Hunter Valley’s Neil McGuigan has created a particularly rewarding drop in his McGuigan The Shortlist Botrytis Semillon 2012, because in it he’s crafted a wine that will go equally well with one of those warming winter-time pudds – or with fruit salad, ice-cream, cheesecake or apple pie and custard.

First year just flies by for iFLY On Sunday, April 26 iFLY Downunder Indoor Skydiving celebrated its first birthday with the iFLY Family Open Day. It was a huge day which saw 113 people taking to the man-made skies plus another 150 people there to enjoy the daylong birthday celebrations. There was plenty of fun for the whole family with demonstrations from experienced flyers including the Cocobella Junior iFLYER kids plus a chance to win flying time with Superman himself! There was also face painting for the kids, free food tastings from upRAW cafe and Juice Bar and of course no birthday would be complete without a birthday cake. It was the perfect way to say ‘happy birthday’ to this fun local attraction. iFLY Downunder is located at Penrith Panthers Leagues Club.

Rabbit calicivirus is a haemorrhagic disease which is highly infectious and can be fatal to both wild and domestic bunnies. Australian authorities have approved the virus for the use to control the ‘wild’ rabbit population and it is very common all over NSW. Unfortunately, pet rabbits can also be infected and suffer from this horrible disease.

MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

This week is all about formulating smart strategies and finding solutions. Focus intently on work, education or business matters, as the Sun/Pluto trine gives you the extra power and passion needed to boost your public profile or fast-track your finances. But don’t neglect loved ones in the process.

The Full Moon stirs up old resentments but holding onto grudges will get you nowhere fast. ‘Forgive and forget’ is your preferred motto this week as you finally face your responsibilities, which clears the air so you can then move onto fabulous new fields of opportunity that await.

Mercury (your ruling planet) is in your career zone, so step up to the professional plate and showcase your Virgo versatility. Super Sun/Pluto aspects help you replace out-dated aspirations with dazzling up-dated dreams. But a relationship with a romantic or business partner looks complicated on the weekend.

It’s a wonderful week to power through creative projects, network with work colleagues and catch up with friends. This week the stars urge you to look beyond outer appearances (in yourself and others). Your motto for the moment is from Audrey Hepburn, “For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.

An avid reader and raconteur, Grace took with a passion to the legends of Kauai, and soon began holding regular story-telling sessions for guests, she herself relating the island’s myths, legends and history at gatherings in the resort’s lounges. She was particularly fascinated with the Resort’s connection with Kauai’s one-time royalty that dated back to the 13th century, and read all she could about Queen Deborah Kekaiha’akulou who was the island’s last reigning monarch, and who had once owned the land on which the Resort now stood. Learning that the Queen had died on that land on August 26, 1853, Grace initiated an annual celebration on that date of Queen Deborah’s life, engaging resort guests enthusiastically in the events. Gus and Grace ultimately married in 1969 and grew Coco Palms from 24 rooms to nearly 300 – including 32 garden bungalows that featured clam-shell wash basins in bathrooms, and lamps made from coconuts. Gus died in 1984 aged 69 and Grace sixteen years later at 76; they had already sold Coco Palms some years earlier, but stayed-on as managers. In 1992 Hurricane Iniki trashed the place and while empty since, plans have just been announced to totally renovate and reopen it in 2017. Coco Palms will be largely restored to its quaint yester-year glory of a half-century ago.

Good place for a rolling start if you’ve got a flat battery: Baldwin Street in North East Valley just outside New Zealand’s Dunedin, is officially the steepest street in the world. Photo: WikiMedia recognised by Guinness as “a street.” And if you are wondering how Baldwin Street came to be built so steeply back in the 1800s, it was because with no local town planners, developers of the new community had to ask a company in London to draw-up plans for their new suburb… and as no one in London thought to ask about the terrain, they simply planned streets in flat grid formation. Visitors today also note that Baldwin is one of the few streets in the area to be concrete sealed: because when it was being built, it was feared that if bitumen-sealed, it could simply soften on hot days and slide down the hill.

David Ellis says that while Baldwin Street just outside Dunedin in New Zealand is officially recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the steepest street in the world, there’s another in America that’s steeper. But being closed to traffic, it is not recognised as such. Baldwin Street in Dunedin’s North East Valley is just 350m long, has an average 35 per cent gradient, and is open to anyone game enough to drive or walk it. Canton Avenue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the USA, however, has a steeper 37 per cent gradient, but because it’s a mere 7m long and has signs warning “Do Not Enter,” is not

The reason for eyebrows-up was that in those days few women were offered executive roles, the sister was a “haole” (a non-Hawaiian,) she had no knowledge of Hawaiian culture considered so important in the hotel industry – and worse, at 43 years of age she had never even worked in an hotel. But in appointing Grace Buscher as his new GM, Gus Guslander had played a brilliant hand. For he had seen from their first meeting that the enormously energetic Grace had charm, a disarming smile that put people instantly at ease, and had taken passionately to the culture of the people of Kauai, who in turn connected equally as passionately with her. A long-time hotel man, Gus had long dreamed of owning his own Utopian island resort, and as part of that dream had leased, and later bought, the 24-room Coco Palms Lodge in late 1952. He re-named it the Coco Palms Resort – on opening-night January 25, 1953 he, Grace and four employees welcoming all of two guests. And he soon recognised what a true power-house Grace would prove to be, earning Coco Palms a reputation for the best dining experiences on Kauai, quality

What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? One of the biggest benefits for me would just be making everyday activities easier and having more energy to last me the day.

Biggest health/fitness misconception? I think one of the biggest misconceptions is targeting specific areas of fat. There is no such thing as spot reduction for losing fat. Doing 1000 sit ups a day won’t burn all your belly fat alone.

What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? I love doing HIIT (high intensity interval training). I always feel as though I am getting the most out of my limited time to train. A session at the gym doesn’t need to take two hours. How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ’take it easy’? Set goals for myself. Surrounding myself with good, energetic people to train with and always mixing up the workouts. Every day is a new challenge.

Eloise DeZwart

Challenge yourself to be healthy

How did you get into fitness? I’ve always enjoyed playing sports growing up so this seemed like the perfect career path for me. I love to help people and educate them to lead a healthier life. Even a little education for people who are unsure about what they should do to better their health is a step in the right direction.

I used to struggle ... but now school work’s FUN!

Top three tips for good health? My tips for good health are to always make sure you are drinking plenty of water to keep the body hydrated. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and stay active. A daily ‘must do’? Get a good night’s sleep. It’s really

Most tuition centres are franchises. The Tuition Place is independent and local. This gives you three important advantages: 1. Teaching methods and resources are tailored for the children of the Penrith area, not dictated by a franchisor from far away. 2. If you have special requirements, things can be adapted for you quickly.

As a speaker and consultant on fitness and wellbeing, I’m frequently asked: “What is the best way to impact my children to lead a fit and healthy life?” My answer is always the same: “The best way to have fit and healthy kids, is to be a fit and healthy adult”. Looked at another way, the best way to have unfit and overweight kids is to be an unfit and overweight adult. Some people might not like this, but it is fundamentally true. Parents can promote physical activity not only by

limiting TV and screen time, but also by being highly supportive of their children’s active pursuits. Another study, Influence of Parents’ Physical Activity Levels on Activity Levels of Young Children, found that children of active fathers are 3.5 times more likely to be active than children of inactive fathers. Here are six tips I stole off Tim May to encourage your children to exercise:

1. Play, build a cubby house, go for a bushwalk, dig holes at the beach, take the dog to the local oval, kick a footy around the park 2. Blend exercise with family time, don’t make a big deal about exercising, just build it into your everyday life. 3. Switch off technology, regularly turn off the TV, the iPad and the digital devices and encourage your kids to explore, play, imagine, interact and do. 4. Disguise fitness, kids love activities such as climbing, throwing, skipping and exploring. Use your imagination and make exercise and adventure fun. 5. Enter an event together, like a fun run, a bike ride or a community walk. 6. Exercise yourself, be a positive role model and lead by example. In a society in which lack of movement and obesity are ever-increasing problems, it is hugely important to lead by example and teach children habits that will be with them for life. Every day I am reminded in the interactions with my children that being a parent is a huge responsibility. Being positive with our health is a big requirement.

Turning back Time

Log Cabin holds a place in our hearts It was more than just a pub. The Log Cabin was part of Penrith’s history and its closure in 2012 hurt the community deeply, as Nathan Taylor reports...

The Log Cabin went through many different eras before it was destroyed in 2012. Photo: Penrith City Library

B

efore it sadly burned to the ground in March of 2012, the Penrith Log Cabin was one of this city’s most iconic and cherished venues. With sweeping views of the mighty Nepean River below and the beautiful Blue Mountains afar, the Log Cabin was by far and away Penrith’s best vantage point. The history of the Log Cabin is also quite vast and intriguing as detailed in Lorna Parr’s publication Hotels and Inns of Penrith District. The book reveals that in 1924, businessman Joynton Smith – who was also Lord Mayor of Sydney at the time and had interests in the Carrington Hotel in Katoomba, Hydro Majestic in Medlow Bath and the Imperial in Rooty Hill – could not find a suitable place to get a decent cup of tea in Penrith whilst travelling to and from the Blue Mountains. Mr Smith wanted a place where he could stop for a drink and rest, so he purchased land overlooking the Nepean River from local men Frank and Arthur Judges.

“There was a fuss about it, and I had to take a shandy, which was lukewarm,” Mr Smith said at the time. “I thought then, were I in business there, I should cater for every kind of trade the public wanted. From that I went on to resolve that in the near future I would have tea at Penrith and so should any other motorist who wanted it.” The Log House, as it was originally known, was opened by Mr Smith in December 1925 and became a hugely popular night spot outside of Sydney when drinking laws were more restricted and party-goers had to travel outside the 30 mile limit. In 1939, a change of ownership took place which saw the Log House renovated and extended. It was subsequently renamed the Log Cabin Hotel, with the tea rooms transformed into a fully fledged hotel. In the 1940s, to make the trip out west friendlier for patrons, the Log Cabin Railway Station was constructed nearby. However, the station only lasted 10 years before it was torn down. During World War II, the Log Cabin was used extensively by the Australian Army.

69

In February 1940, some of the 2/3rd Field Regiment had a farewell drink at the Log Cabin and ‘souvenired’ the famous Log Cabin flag, which was dark blue with the words ‘Log Cabin Hotel’ stitched across it. The flag went off to war and it wasn’t until half a century later that it was finally returned to the hotel. In 1990, the flag made its long-awaited journey back home when then owner Ross Sinclair and manager Yvonne Kenyon held a party for the returned men. The flag was on display in the hotel’s foyer. In 1955, new owner Francis James McKittrick re-modelled the old building and attracted tourists to the picturesque spot. They promoted that the Log Cabin ‘specialised in Wedding Receptions – no parking problems’. In 1970, a major addition to the property was made with a 26 suite motel built next door. This resulted in a name change in 1971 to the Log Cabin Motor Inn. In 1983, the Log Cabin Motor Inn took on, what would end up being, its final owner when local businessman Ross Sinclair, of the Sinclair Group, purchased the property.

Mr Sinclair wanted to turn the Log Cabin into Penrith’s most prestigious hotel and so, more motel rooms were constructed with the area landscaped and extra catering facilities made available. With Mr Sinclair at the helm, the Log Cabin was a booming success for the next 30 years, with patrons young and old visiting the venue all year round. However, tragedy struck the Log Cabin on the evening of March 9, 2012 when fire ripped through the historic venue, burning it to the ground. “We were terribly upset and distraught because it is part of our life,” Mr Sinclair told the Weekender at the time. “You never envisage that it will happen, but when it does, it’s a soul-destroying nightmare.” Fortunately, the famous Log Cabin Hotel flag, which had so much wartime history attached to it, did manage to survive the blaze. “I had it in a safe upstairs, and we had a copy of the flag, which was the one in the foyer,” Mr Sinclair added. The Log Cabin has never been re-built. The land has been flattened.

etball is already a hugely popular sport in Penrith but it’s expected to explode later this year thanks to the Netball World Cup, which will be held in Sydney this August. Member for Penrith and Sports Minister, Stuart Ayres joined Netball World Cup Chief Executive, Marne Fechner and Australian Diamonds player, Sharni Layton at Emu Heights Public School on Tuesday morning to celebrate the event’s 100 day countdown. “The Netball World Cup hasn’t been in

N

Australia for 24 years, so this is an exciting opportunity for sport lovers to experience the world’s best,” Mr Ayres said. “Netball is Australia’s largest female participation sport, so it’s with great pride we’re able to bring the cream of netball talent right here to Sydney.” The Netball World Cup Trophy Tour, which was in Emu Heights on Tuesday, has been travelling right across Australia, and is set to clock up 25,000km in just over three months, capturing the imagination of local communities and encouraging them to get behind the event. Day 4 of the tournament, which will take place on August 10, will be designated ‘Schools Day’ celebrating schools as a

key part of the Legacy Program. It will stage the World’s Biggest Netball Clinic on Olympic Boulevard in Homebush for schools to participate in. “Australia has long been the team to beat in world netball and we wish the Diamonds the best of luck as they prepare to defend their title as the world’s best in front of home crowds in August,” Mr Ayres said. “With two competition days almost fully subscribed, the event is on track to be the biggest women’s sporting event in Australian history.” The Netball World Cup 2015 will be held from August 7 to 16. THE very successful ANZAC NRL match between Penrith and Cronulla last Sunday afternoon was about much more than football. The hugely popular ANZAC jersey worn by the Penrith players was a huge success, and as a result, $60,000 was donated to Defence Care from the proceeds generated by the jersey. Defence Care helps current and ex-serving members of the Australian Defence Force and their families in times of injury, illness or crisis. Some 3000 ANZAC jerseys were sold by the club. Adding to the success of the ANZAC jumper was the fact that all of the club’s jersey sponsors, including major sponsor OAK, agreed to step down from the jersey. While other NRL clubs wore ANZAC jerseys, only Penrith’s didn’t feature sponsor logos. Panthers CEO Justin Pascoe said the club had been “overwhelmed” by the amount of support and positive feedback for the jersey. Panthers Chairman Don Feltis presented NSW RSL CEO Chris Perrin with the $60,000 donation before the game last Sunday.

Special honour for rugby youngsters Penrith RSL Junior Rugby Union Club players involved in special Super Rugby ANZAC Day match

@natetaylor87

hile the rest of the nation was remembering the Centenary of ANZAC in their own special way last weekend, the Penrith RSL Junior Rugby Union Club marked the occasion in very public fashion during the NSW Waratahs vs Melbourne Rebels Super Rugby match at ANZ Stadium.

W

The local club, which was only established a year ago, played a very significant role during the special pre-match formalities and half-time commemorations. Club president, Adam Fletcher, said the idea for Penrith RSL players to be a part of the memorable occasion was almost one year in the making. “12 months ago I submitted a brief proposal that Penrith RSL would be a great fit to be involved on the night, in which we were successful,” he said.

“Players from our Sunday sides participated in the pre-match ANZAC service in the guard of honour and were also mascots and flag bearers at half-time, even appearing in the FOX Sports coverage. “Also, our minis and girls sevens’ teams played in the curtain raiser before the sevens fixture between the Army and Navy.” Mr Fletcher said it was a monumental occasion for his young club to be a part of and one they’d never forget.

He added that the wild weather before the game almost caused some unwanted drama for players and parents, but fortunately everything went off without a hitch. “Coordinating all our players and parents to get there was a feat in itself, which was only compounded by the freak storm on the night,” he said. “However everything turned out fine, and for the club’s first social function of the year, it couldn’t have been better.”

Horror draw gets a little easier for Emus Penrith coach hoping for first Shute Shield win of the season against West Harbour on Saturday NATHAN TAYLOR

@natetaylor87

enrith Emus coach Sateki Tu’ipulotu has strongly affirmed his side haven’t gone backwards despite not scoring a single try against Eastwood last Saturday afternoon. Playing on a heavy pitch compounded with teeming rain at Nepean Rugby Park, Tu’ipulotu’s men went down 48-3 to the undefeated competition leaders. However, in a surprising statement, Tu’ipulotu said he was satisfied with his team’s performance. “In some ways I was satisfied with some areas of our game but there were some areas that weren’t particularly great,” he said. Despite leaking 48 points, Tu’ipulotu praised Penrith’s defence during the clash, which even had the opposition coach somewhat surprised. “Speaking with Eastwood’s coach after the game, they were disappointed because they wanted to put a lot more points on considering they are leading the competition,” he said. “I was happy with our defence, it wasn’t too bad.” This Saturday the Emus will hit the road

The game will be Penrith’s first this season against a side in the bottom half of the competition, with coach Tu’ipulotu liking his chances. “The good thing is the top six teams are

now gone, we’ve played them all in the first six rounds. Now we’re in the bottom six and I think that’s where our medium is and is hopefully where we’ll get our first win,” he said. “It’ll be a very close match against the Pirates, the two teams are very similar in

terms of player personal. Just like us there are a lot of Polynesians playing for West Harbour.” Meanwhile, in other Emus news, Penrith’s Second Grade Colts team won their first game of the season, defeating Eastwood 22-15.

Seeing double: What an achievement! Penrith City Softball Association celebrates U17 State Championship success for both boys and girls NATHAN TAYLOR

@natetaylor87

inning one State Championship is quite a challenge but winning two on the same weekend is almost unthinkable, but that’s exactly what the Penrith City Softball Association achieved late last month when their U17 Boys and Girls teams took out top prize at the 2015 State Championships. In the State Championship final, the Penrith City U17 Boys took on defending champions Macarthur after going through the regular rounds undefeated. Macarthur hit the lead early 1-0 but Penrith City dominated the rest of the game, running out clear winners 7-1. Meanwhile, in the girls’ competition, Penrith City were up against Hornsby in the all-important deciding game. The final was a close contest throughout but Penrith City got the upper hand early and was never headed, winning the decider 4-1. President of the Penrith City Softball Association, Loretta Watts, said achieving the double was an extremely rare feat, although Penrith City did manage to do it in September last year when their U13

Penrith City U17 Boys Boys and Girls teams were crowned State champions. “Penrith City Softball Association is extremely proud of both the U17 Girls and U17 Boys who both walked away with undefeated titles at the 2015 State Championships last week,” she said. “This has been a very rare event for Penrith City Softball to take the double but Penrith City have been able to achieve this twice in 12 months with Penrith City

Penrith City U17 Girls taking out the U13 Boys and Girls State Championships back in September last year.” Ms Watts praised the dedication, hard work and commitment of all players, coaches and officials involved in the two victories. “Penrith City Softball has been able to achieve great results at State Championships over the last 12 months due to the hard work of the players and coaching

staff. The U17 teams were no exception to this,” she said. Ms Watts said that the boys and girls combined well to form a strong partnership that helped them on the road to success. “Both teams gelled from the start to forge an unbreakable bond that led to achieving the ultimate goal,” Ms Watts said. Wanderers reflect on mixed year Topor-Stanley wins Wanderers Medal as club looks back on highs and lows of 2014/15 NATHAN TAYLOR

@natetaylor87

estern Sydney Wanderers captain Nikolai Topor-Stanley was the star of the 2015 Wanderers Medal on Tuesday night as the club celebrated an historic season that saw them become the first Australian club to win the AFC Champions League. 29-year-old Topor-Stanley took out the A-League Player of the Year after one of his most consistent seasons which saw him lead the team to AFC Champions League glory as well as playing almost 3000 minutes over the course of the campaign. Wanderers goalkeeper and Weekender columnist Ante Covic was recognised for his excellent performance in Asia by being awarded the ACL Player of the Year to add to his MVP trophy awarded to him by the AFC. International superstar Keelin Winters claimed the W-League double as she won Player of the Year and the Golden Boot award. It was a fitting reward for the USA national’s debut season in the W-League that saw her terrorise defences throughout.

Around the grounds BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers men’s Waratah Championship League side return to the court this Sunday afternoon to take on the Hills Hornets. The match between the sixth placed Panthers and last placed Hornets will tip-off at 1pm at the Hills Basketball Stadium. Meanwhile, Penrith’s women’s team will also take on the Hornets on Sunday with tip-off scheduled for 11am. In that competition, Penrith sit in fourth while Hills are in last. ICE HOCKEY: The Penrith Phantoms will return to the ice this Sunday when they battle the in-form Canterbury Bucs in the latest round of the NSW Ice Hockey Division 1 competition. The match will begin at 7.15pm at the Liverpool Catholic Club Ice Rink. CRICKET: Six players from the Penrith Cricket Club will spend the Australian winter playing cricket abroad in the UK. Pete Betros, Michael Collins, AJ Isherwood, Luke Hodges, Jona Sammut and Kishen Velani have all departed Sydney bound for various cricket clubs across the UK. AFL: The Penrith Rams will return to the pitch this Saturday when they take on the Western Suburbs Magpies in the latest round of the AFL Sydney Division 2 competition.

The match between the fourth placed Rams and eighth placed Magpies will begin at 2.10pm at Greygums Oval. Meanwhile, the Penrith Ramettes ladies side will finally get their season underway when they battle the Auburn Giants on Saturday at 10am. The Ramettes were due to begin their season last weekend but their match against Blacktown was washed out. OZTAG: Officials from the Penrith OzTag Association are hoping to finally get the 2015 winter season underway this Tuesday, May 5 after the season opener was washed out twice in two weeks. The winter season was due to begin on April 21 but was postponed because of bad weather to April 28. But with storms sweeping Sydney last weekend, grounds at The Kingsway in St Marys were far to wet for competition, which forced Round 1 to be postponed for a second time. RUGBY LEAGUE: The Penrith Panthers finally have their opponent for this weekend’s SG Ball Preliminary Final. After enjoying the weekend off, the Panthers will meet the Cronulla Sharks this Saturday afternoon at St Marys Stadium for a place in next week’s Grand Final. If Penrith manage to prevail they’ll take on the winner between Manly and South Sydney, who play in the other game.

Dutchman Romeo Castelen was voted Members’ Player of the Year while Steve Kuzmanovski beat off a number of impressive candidates to win Youth League Player of the Year and Alex Scollard was awarded Powerchair Player of the Year. In the community section, Vanessa and Graeme Carrett shared the Rod Allen Community Award, Adam Luczak won Wandercrew Member of the Year and Rhonda Hawkins was awarded the Chairman’s Award in recognition of 30 years of service to the western Sydney community. Meanwhile, Western Sydney’s A-League season ended how it began last Saturday night with a 2-1 loss to Perth Glory at Pirtek Stadium. The match wasn’t without its fair share of controversy though with kick-off delayed due to the Parramatta pitch being blanketed by hail from a thunderstorm. The Wanderers finished their 2014-15 A-League campaign in ninth position with four wins, six draws and 17 losses to their name – their worst record since entering the league in 2012. The Wanderers still have one game remaining and that’s their final AFC Champions League match against Guangzhou Evergrande this Tuesday evening in China.

Difficult week for Olympic star, but Leonay local manages to come out on top NATHAN TAYLOR

lympic silver medallist and reigning world champion, Jessica Fox, has bounced back from devastation to win gold in the women’s U23 K1 final at the ICF Junior and U23 World Championships in Brazil last weekend. It was a welcome return to her best for the 20-year-old from Leonay, who had struggled for most of the competition to recapture the form that saw her dominate the sport last year. After a shock fifth in the C1 final last Saturday, Fox left nothing to chance on the tricky Foz do Iguassu course. “I’m really happy with that run, I’m happy with the way I raced that race,” Fox said. “The whole week has been quite stressful, there was pressure and expectation.” Fox went into the final as the third best paddler, but went out aggressive and with purpose, sizzling down the course in 93.52 seconds. Her run was fault-free, and more than three seconds quicker than local paddler, Ana Satila, who finished with silver. “Yesterday’s C1 was a really big blow for

But I was really proud of the way I raced that race in C1, I learned a lot from that run,” she said. “I actually found the speed and aggression I was looking for all week, and I just channelled it into the race.” In 2014, Fox won every major title she con-

tested – the World Junior K1 and C1 and World Senior K1 and C1. She will get the chance to defend her senior titles in London this September. Meanwhile, Fox also won a silver medal in the U23 K1 teams final alongside fellow local Alison Borrows and Perth’s Georgia Rankin.
