hey say everyone’s a winner at The Reject Shop, but this truck was very much a loser on Tuesday.

The B-Double failed to negotiate a turn on Station Street near Union Road in the Penrith CBD, causing traffic chaos for several hours.

The Reject Shop truck was eventually moved on but not before police had to divert vehicles away from the busy intersection, including buses which were extensively delayed.

Making matters worse, it happened as Penrith was hit with a torrential downpour of rain, with the wet weather sticking around for most of the week.

Flash flooding impacted several local roads on Tuesday and Wednesday, while two motorists had to be rescued in Erskine Park after attempting to drive their vehicles through flood waters.

Water poured through a property in Luddenham, resulting in another rescue, while Old MacDonald’s Child Care centre in Orchard Hills had to be evacuated.

It turned out to be an adventure for the youngsters at the centre however, who were helped to their waiting parents by members of the NSW Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service.

Penrith OzTag Grand Finals had to be postponed due to the state of the fields at The Kingsway.

The rain is set to continue over the next week with a 90 per cent chance of wet weather on Saturday and Sunday. It’ll rain until at least Wednesday next week.

Troy Dodds he revelations by Wests Tigers rugby league star Tim Simona that he gambled on rugby league games, including against his own team, have shaken the NRL to its very core.

Rugby league is no stranger to scandals – and its ability to brush them off and move forward is stunning – but when the very integrity of the 80 minutes on the field is questioned, there’s a very significant and explosive problem.

But it’s not so much the match fixing claims that are the blight on the game long-term.

Simona’s revelations that he had a significant gambling problem, and became a regular user of cocaine, bring the NRL’s social conscience to the fore.

Let’s deal with the drugs first.

Simona admits that he became a regular user of cocaine after a Mad Monday cruise three years ago and had never touched drugs before that.

For the uninitiated, that’s a footy club’s end of year celebrations (or commiserations, as it may be).

You would think that the fact that Simona was introduced to drugs at an event very much related to his rugby league career would raise serious questions at both the Wests Tigers and NRL headquarters.

But Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe made it clear last weekend that there would be no investigation at club level.

As for the NRL, they would surely be worried by this line from Simona: “I would take it on a Friday so by Monday I think it would be out of my system”.

That’s a similar story to the one told by Andrew Johns a decade ago.

“Scandals shouldn’t be all about media management”

Surely it is still not a viable loophole for players 10 years later?

The NRL will tell you that it tests players regularly and that is most definitely true. Just like drink drivers or drug users in society, not everyone will get caught.

However, it is almost impossible to deny that drugs play a role in the lives of many young players across the game.

The NRL and its clubs need to do even more to ensure that stories like that of Simona, which is as sad as it is deeply concerning, are few and far between.

Player welfare is a box most clubs tick, but it needs to go beyond that.

As for gambling, this is most likely an even bigger issue across young players who have spare time and money to burn.

The problem is, the NRL and many of its broadcasters are just as addicted to gambling as many people in society are.

Every time we watch or listen to the footy, we’re bombarded with odds. We play the game at venues named after gambling organisations, become official partners with gambling agencies and wear jerseys with bookmaker branding.

And then we turn around, proudly on our high horse, and demand our players stay away from it.

I understand the money gambling brings to rugby league, but there’s just something not right about the above scenario. We’re essentially opening a box of donuts in front of a fat bloke and telling him not to take a bite.

The bottom line is this – the Tim Simona story will disappear from the headlines soon enough. The next scandal will come along, and it’ll disappear too. We can’t really stop them happening.

But what rugby league should ask itself every time something like this happens is what can it learn?

Scandals shouldn’t be all about media management, they should be about an in depth response, both internally and externally.

If rugby league truly did learn from every scandal, it’d be a far better game.

Police respect needs to be improved Last week a family member of mine found himself in hospital after copping a knee to the chest while on duty as a police officer.

This won’t be reported through the media because it’s just another day on the job for the boys and girls in blue.

Many police officers tell me that respect for the badge and the uniform is at an alltime low. Respect for the police is something we as society as well as lawmakers have let get weaker and weaker for so long. Now we’re watching the result of it play out day in, day out.

Andrew Scipione has been a tremendous Police Commissioner, but his replacement needs to prioritise restoring respect for police officers who are constantly attacked just for doing their jobs.

School of the future to change learning Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirms Luddenham will be the site of new school that breaks with tradition JADE ALIPRANDI

uddenham will be home to the country’s first STEM-focused school, which will be built inside Sydney Science Park.

Officially announced this week by NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, the school will be built in partnership between the Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta (CEDP) and Celestino, the developers of Sydney Science Park.

Among other things, students will learn how to code robots, liaise with NASA space stations and discover the latest in IT programming.

Ms Berejiklian said the school would provide an innovative curriculum using discovery and enquiry-based learning strategies to give students the skills to be problem-solvers and innovators.

“This is an historic agreement on an historic day,” she said.

“This is putting NSW at the cutting edge of education in the nation and what this school means for the future is exciting.

“We know for a fact that at no stage in history has the growth of technology been as rapid as it is now – this school will have no boundaries and no limits.”

The 2000-student school will be a ‘pre to post’ (preschool to beyond Year 12) facility and draw on the collaboration and resources of businesses, research organisations, educational institutions and community groups within Sydney Science Park.

It will be open beyond usual school hours, with students and teachers able to contribute back to the community through real-world learning projects.

“This will be a school in which learning will be personalised and organised by stage not age,” Ms Berejiklian said at her press conference held at Caroline Chisholm College in Glenmore Park on Wednesday morning.

“It will recognise that students learn at different rates and in different ways.”

With a strong focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, students and teachers will be able to connect physically and virtually with other schools, learners and educators around the world through collaborative learning opportunities and state-of-theart online learning platforms.

“Education has always been at the core of our vision and today’s signing is the realisation of years of planning,” said CEO of Celestino, John Bassallo.

Police

Man dead after horror crash with bus • High school students escape with only minor injuries • Police were following car in the lead-up to crash EMILY NEWTON

he man killed in a serious collision between a car and a school bus at Londonderry last Friday was being followed by police prior to the crash.

While the fatality is a tragedy, it’s a miracle that students travelling on the bus weren’t killed or seriously injured. Only two had to be taken to hospital.

The students were on their way to Richmond High School when the accident happened.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Jeff Philippi said an investigation into the circumstances leading up to the crash has been launched.

“Shortly after 8am this morning [March 10] Police became aware of a motor vehicle travelling east along The Driftway towards Londonderry Road, Londonderry, and had cause to follow the vehicle,” he said.

“When it approached the intersection of Londonderry Road, the vehicle they were following entered the intersection without slowing.

“There is substantial damage to the bus and the vehicle, and the driver of the sedan is unfortunately deceased.

The driver of the bus also escaped unharmed and has been praised for his efforts to ensure the safety of the children on board.

One local resident said it was an horrific scene.

“I heard a big bang. When I walked out I saw a bus and a car that hit it, and a big fire,” the Richmond High School student said.

“I thought some of my friends could have been on that bus, it was terrifying.”

The smell of fire was still in the air hours after the crash as debris lay scattered across the road.

The NSW Education Department said Richmond High School students were being offered counselling in the wake of the crash.

A report is being prepared for the Coroner in relation to the accident. The report is likely to detail the circumstances leading up to the crash including why the vehicle attracted the interest of police.

Rumour has it this was her best birthday ever JADE ALIPRANDI

usic superstar Adele has made sure that an Emu Plains mum will never forget her 50th birthday.

Debbie Ritchie-Leishman said she couldn’t believe her eyes, or ears, when Adele sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to her at last Saturday night’s concert.

With her ‘50 Today’ sign and her husband in tow, Mrs Ritchie-Leishman headed to see one of her favourite singers perform at ANZ Stadium.

“I took my sign thinking perhaps she might see me – we were in Gate A so there was a chance,” Mrs Ritchie-Leishman told the Weekender.

“Then when she turned around to me and asked if it was my birthday, I was stunned, I didn’t know what to say.

“I really did not believe it was happening and it was just a total ‘pinch me I’m having an out of body experience’ moment.”

The couple managed to grab tickets to Adele’s second show after her husband said she could have whatever she wanted for her 50th birthday.

While Mrs Ritchie-Leishman said it was an amazing day, it didn’t quite start out that way.

“I lost my mum a few years ago around

Christmas and we would always talk about what we would do when I turned 50,” she said.

“Adele singing Happy Birthday to me really made my day – going to the concert was amazing but her speaking to me and singling me out, it was amazing and she really helped heal me. It was definitely one of the best birthdays ever.”

Mrs Ritchie-Leishman said she hopes Adele knows how much she helps her fans.

“Her songs have stories behind them; she’s so honest and her voice is amazing,” she said.

“I don’t think she realises how she touched me and many people have said the same thing to me – she spreads so much love and energy and for me personally she helped in my healing process.”

PUBLIC HEARING Erskine Park Planning Proposal Reclassification and Rezoning of Public Land An independent public hearing will be held regarding the Erskine Park Planning Proposal and the community is invited to attend.

Section 29 of the Local Government Act requires a public hearing if public land is to be reclassified from ‘Community’ to ‘Operational’.

The Erskine Park Planning Proposal seeks, among other things, to reclassify seven Council-owned, public land sites from their current ‘Community’ classification to an ‘Operational’ classification.

The Planning Proposal was publicly exhibited for comment from 10 February 2017 until 10 March 2017.

What happens at the Public Hearing?

The Public Hearing is independently conducted and chaired by a non-Council official. The hearing provides the community with the option of further explaining to an independent person any written submissions they made about the Planning Proposal during its exhibition and for others who may not have made a submission to present their views on the Proposal to an independent person, in a public gathering. Anyone may attend the public hearing, but those wishing to speak are requested to register with Council, as described later in this notice.

To achieve this, the Planning Proposal seeks to: s Change the zoning of the sites from ‘RE1 Public Recreation’ to ‘R2 Low Density Residential’ (the same zoning as other residential land in Erskine Park), to permit their development for those uses permitted in that zone; s Reclassify the land from ‘Community’ to ‘Operational’, in order to permit it to be sold, if Council chooses to do so. s Establish a minimum lot size of 550sqm and height controls of 8.5m for the seven sites – the same controls which apply to other residential land in Erskine Park.

The proposed reclassification will also remove all Public Reserve trusts, remove a fencing restriction trust for 11 Ashwick Circuit, but retain all easements to drain water and for underground mains and electricity, as well as maintaining a covenant requiring consent for access to the M4 Motorway.

PUBLIC NOTICE Proposed Permanent Road Closure – Caddens Road, Caddens From April 2017 the section of Caddens Road between O’Connell Lane and Mariposa Circuit, Caddens will be permanently closed to through traffic. The closure relates to vehicle traffic, with full pedestrian and cyclist access retained.

The closure is part of an original master plan for the Caddens development area. It addresses safety concerns regarding increased traffic due to residential growth and the upgrade of Gipps Street to accommodate the development of the east facing ramps at the M4.This closure provides a safe alternative route to Caddens Road via Cadda Ridge Drive and O’Connell Lane as both roads have been designed to accommodate a higher volume of traffic.

ick De Zwart is urging residents to keep their eyes on their letterboxes after witnessing two people attempting to steal mail in Penrith last week.

With his suspicion immediately raised, he followed the male and female for a short time while filming footage on his phone to try and help catch the thieves.

“They appeared to be going in and out of the property trying to gain entry,” Mr De Zwart said.

Mr De Zwart said when he tried to report the crime to Penrith Police, he was brushed off and ignored.

“The woman on the phone was silent...

It made me feel as though I was just a nagging member of the public and more of an inconvenience,” he said.

However, Penrith Police said Mr De Zwart’s report was taken seriously, and a car was sent out following his phone call.

Australia Post recommends residents lock letterboxes with a key and clear the mailbox daily to deter criminals.

“Overflowing mailboxes are a criminal’s paradise,” a spokesperson said.

ormer Penrith resident Lisa Magill, who courageously documented her journey with terminal cancer through her blog ‘Terminally Fabulous’, has sadly passed away.

Three years ago Ms Magill was diagnosed with a rare, incurable form of stomach cancer. She lost her battle on Saturday.

The 34-year-old created ‘Terminally Fabulous’ in February last year and was known for her humorous posts and updates.

She made headlines last year when she ticked off a bucket list item of attending the Melbourne Cup in the Emirates Marquee.

On March 7, during an extremely hard few days, Ms Magill woke for a short time and posted a video to her Facebook Page, that gained worldwide attention.

“I have been quite ill and I’ve been in the hospital for the past few days,” Ms Magill explained in the Facebook video.

“I am in pain as I speak. My chest is hurting, my stomach hurts, my pelvis hurts, everything massively hurts. My legs, my arms, everything. I’m so weak I can’t actually stand up out of my own bed.”

Leonay resident and close friend of Ms Magill, Mel Grand, told the Weekender “Lisa was amazing”.

“She educated others, she made us laugh, she made us cry but ultimately, she shared her story to help others in her situation and to help others understand the reality of her disease.”

The pair met during their time at Caroline Chisholm College.

Drunk mum: Woman four times over the limit with kids in car EMILY NEWTON

woman who was busted high range drink driving with four children in her car last week at Cranebrook will appear in court later this month.

The woman gave police officers a further shock when they found she had left two more young children at her home unsupervised.

Penrith police were patrolling along Goldmark Crescent, Cranebrook, at about 3.45pm last Wednesday (March 8) when they came across the woman.

Officers stopped her white Toyota which had four children inside, aged between six and 10.

The driver, 33-year-old Lisa Johnston, was given a roadside breath test, which returned a positive result.

She was subsequently arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station.

During this time her four children found in the car were cared for by officers.

“Following inquiries, officers attended the woman’s home and found two children, aged two and four, unsupervised inside the property,” a Police spokesperson said.

“The two children were removed by officers and taken to Penrith Police Station.”

Ms Johnston underwent a breath analysis at the station, which returned an alleged reading of 0.212.

She was charged with high range PCA and given conditional bail to appear before Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, March 28.

The six children are currently being cared for by a relative and the Department of Family and Community Services have been notified of the incident.

Ms Johnston told 7 News she felt “really bad” about what happened.

Man guilty of supplying drugs

Community divided over road closure Residents say Cadda Ridge Drive will be flooded with traffic once Council closes Caddens Road EMILY NEWTON

he Caddens community is divided over proposed permanent road closures at Caddens Road due to commence in April.

While some residents were aware of the closures, others were taken by surprise when they received a letter from Penrith Council late last month.

Caddens resident Vicky Knott said the closure is separating the neighbourhood.

“We have a Facebook community for our estate, and it’s definitely divided,” she said.

“It’s probably a 50-50 split. There are some people who say that they didn’t mind at first, but now they don’t think it’s a good idea.”

Instead of using Caddens Road, motorists will be expected to use Cadda Ridge Road as the main through road after the changes are made, sending traffic through the middle of the estate.

In a statement provided to the Weekender, Penrith Council said that these changes were planned several years ago.

exist with respect to sight distances at the crests, it is proposed to close Caddens Road to through traffic in some sections, but retain access for cyclists and pedestrians,” the statement said.

“As part of the adopted 2008 Masterplan for the release area, Penrith City Council, in partnership with UrbanGrowth NSW, now proposes to permanently close the section of Caddens Road between O’Connell Lane and Mariposa Circuit for through traffic.”

A petition against the closure gained 50 signatures in its first 24 hours, and is still receiving attention online having now been signed by over 170 people.

The main concern for those against the closure is the safety implications a potential increase in traffic on Cadda Ridge Road might have for young families in the area.

“It’s a windy road... between the trees that Council has planted and the cars on the road, I can’t actually see out of my driveway,” Ms Knott said.

“There’s going to be traffic everywhere.”

Other Caddens residents have expressed their knowledge of the changes, saying that many residents bought their homes with these plans in mind.

They acknowledge that while the road may get busier, that would happen regardless in a developing estate.

No more chances: Habitual offender to serve jail time

An unlicenced mother-of-six caught driving while banned at North St Marys has been told the “time has finally come” to spend time in the slammer.

Lisa May Brown, 40, appeared before Magistrate Georgia Knight last Thursday at Penrith Local Court, charged with the latest in a long string of ‘driving while disqualified’ offences.

Magistrate Knight said the habitual offender, who has never held a licence and is currently disqualified until 2026, had been given “opportunity after opportunity” to serve community-based sentences and alternatives to full time jail and “she still doesn’t get it”.

The court heard Ms Brown was pulled over along Kurrajong Road on January 23 for the purposes of an RBT about 4.48pm.

At the time of the stop there was a licenced driver in the passenger seat as well as three young children seated in the back, according to the facts.

Her lawyer asked Magistrate Knight to “bear in mind her parental responsibilities”, but Magistrate Knight said it was clear she had been shown leniency in the past. She said the court can’t be seen to be sending out the message that people with children at home can commit offences and get away with it.

“It has to be full time jail,” she said.

“I’m aware that there are kids at home... ultimately the court has to take into account the protection of the public.”

The court heard Ms Brown was handed two jail sentences last year – an Intensive Correction Order and Section 12 bond – for the exact same offences, which allowed her to serve the sentences in the community.

Ms Brown remained calm as her sentence of 12 months jail with a non-parole period of six months was handed down.

It is understood she will appeal the sentence at Penrith District Court on March 31, but will remain behind bars in the meantime.

Woman wanted reprieve to attend music festival

An alleged meth dealer’s bid to attend a music concert in Brisbane has been dashed after her application to vary her bail was refused.

Melissa Jane Burgess, 34, of St Clair, applied to temporarily change her reporting conditions so she could attend a 21 Pilots concert, but was knocked back.

Ms Burgess stands accused of 10 charges of supplying a prohibited drug, including ‘ongoing supply’ and supplying a commercial quantity of methamphetamines.

Magistrate Georgia Knight said while she had sympathy for her, it was a serious show cause matter and she was potentially facing a lengthy term of imprisonment if found guilty.

“The fact you booked a concert in Queensland cannot amount to special circumstances,” she said.

The Crown opposed the variation, saying she posed a flight risk.

The court heard Ms Burgess was originally refused bail in the Local Court but was subsequently granted Supreme Court bail.

Her matter is listed for reply on April 7.

Man facing string of charges to stay behind bars

A Colyton man who allegedly committed a number of violent auto thefts will remain behind bars for now after declining to apply for bail.

Peter Lee Barbara, 34, appeared before Penrith Local Court via video link last Thursday charged with 22 counts, including a host of firearm, dishonesty, identification theft and drug offences.

In a crime spree spanning more than two months, police will allege the accused and a number of co-accused stole a range of high-performance vehicles, detaining victims and using menace and force in the process.

With an apparent penchant for fast cars, police claim the Thorpe Street resident made off with a dozen vehicles, includ-

ing a Subaru Impreza RS, Subaru WRX, Mazda RX8, Holden Commodore VK SS, and Mini Cooper S. He is also charged with unlawfully obtaining a Bayliner boat found at a Campton Ave, Cambridge Park address and possessing two prohibited/unauthorised weapons, a BB gun and ballistic knife, both located at Colyton.

During his mention, Mr Barbara’s Legal Aid lawyer requested brief orders and confirmed bail was not sought at that time.

She also asked that the accused be seen by a doctor in custody for drug withdrawal.

He is due to face Penrith Local Court again on May 5.

Drunk, speeding and without glasses: Man’s trifecta of fines

A drunk driver caught speeding and driving without his glasses has been stripped of his licence and slugged several fines.

Manoj Kumar, 40, fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday where he pleaded guilty to ‘mid-range drink driving’, ‘speeding greater than 30km/h over the limit’ and ‘failing to wear prescription spectacles or contacts’.

Magistrate Georgia Knight labelled the father-of-two an “accident waiting to happen”, saying his vision was not only impaired by his failure to wear his glasses, but suggested it was probably further compromised by the alcohol flowing through his veins.

“You couldn’t see properly... you weren’t sure how much you had to drink,” she said.

The court heard the offender was “stressed” at the time of the offence following an argument with his wife and was accelerating to overtake another vehicle when he was busted by police.

Magistrate Knight warned him against getting behind the wheel when upset.

He was convicted, banned from driving for six months and fined $800 each for

the speeding and drink driving matters and $400 for failing to wear spectacles.

Gum chewer reprimanded

A young motorist has been schooled on the rules of etiquette after he was caught chewing gum in court.

Lisati Junior Mossess Taulapapa got more than he bargained for when he faced Magistrate Georgia Knight at Penrith Local Court last Thursday.

When asked why he needed his licence, an eagle-eyed Magistrate Knight spied the offensive contents in his mouth.

“Are you chewing gum?” she asked to no response.

“You don’t chew gum in court, you don’t eat in court,” she said.

Luckily for the offender, the reprimand didn’t signal the tone of the whole proceedings, with Magistrate Knight deciding to dismiss his charges.

“You were certainly a bit slack, I accept that,” she said of the driving while disqualified due to unpaid fines offence.

“You paid the fine as soon as you were pulled over, because of that I won’t impose a conviction.”

He was ordered to enter into a sixmonth good behaviour bond and fined $200 for failing to properly wear his seat belt.

Man busted after night of drinking beer and vodka

A man who took to the wheel five hours after drinking seven stubbies and two shots of vodka has been ordered to shelve his licence for six months.

Nishant Padmakumar appeared before Penrith Local Court charged with midrange drink driving after blowing 0.131.

The court heard the father had stopped drinking at 4am but was back in the driver’s seat by 9am.

In response to his plea for leniency, Magistrate Georgia Knight said “everyone faced difficulties without a licence, but they survive”.

He was convicted and fined $1,200.

Cranebrook: Couple arrested after stealing printer cartridges

A man has been caught stuffing his pants with printer cartridges by keen eyed Woolworths staff at Cranebrook Shopping Village.

On Friday, March 10, staff saw the 37-year-old man, who was accompanied by a 31-year-old woman, leave the store without paying for the goods in his pants.

The staff alerted police, who then arrested the pair in the shopping centre car park.

Their vehicle was then searched by officers where they seized additional property that is alleged to have been stolen.

The man and woman were both charged with ‘larceny’ and ‘stolen goods in custody’ and are set to appear in Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, March 28.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Penrith: Taser and drugs found after police pull over vehicle

Police were called to an address on Woodriff Street in Penrith following reports of two women fighting last Tuesday night (March 7).

As a result, police stopped a motor vehicle nearby that contained a 26-year-old male from Penrith and three women aged between 23 and 35.

Following a search of the vehicle, officers located a number of prohibited items including illicit drugs and a taser.

All occupants of the vehicle were arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station where they were charged with varying offences.

These included ‘possess prohibited weapon,’ ‘affray’ and ‘breach of bail.’ The male was charged with a total of six offences.

They are all set to appear in court on Thursday, April 6.

Penrith: Men choose strange place to relieve themselves

In the early hours of Saturday, March

11, officers observed two males unable to contain themselves, urinating in front of the Penrith Police Station.

They marked their territory on the wall of the station and over the water tap on the side of the building.

The fun of the 26-year-old males from Penrith and St Marys was cut short when they were both issued with future Court Attendance Notices for offensive behaviour.

They are set to appear in Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, May 2.

Werrington: Woman charged after pistol found in car

A woman has been charged with possessing an unregistered firearm in Werrington. Just before 10pm on Friday, March 10 officers from the Police Transport Command stopped a car on the Great Western Highway.

Following a search of the vehicle, police located a replica pistol and a small amount of what is believed to be methylamphetamine in the car.

The driver, a 40-year-old woman from Werrington, was charged with ‘possess unregistered pistol’.

She was refused bail and appeared at Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday, March 11. The passenger, a 19-year-old man, was released pending further inquiries.

St Clair: Police search for clues after night of car break-ins

Police are appealing for public assistance following numerous car break-ins in the St Clair area last weekend.

In the early hours of Saturday, March 11, 16 vehicles that were parked and secured in local streets around St Clair were broken into. A significant amount of property, including wallets and personal property, was stolen.

Some of that property has since been used fraudulently.

Even though we do not practice in the area of defamation, we often get contacted by clients who are involved in personal and business disputes who want to take action against other people or entities about things that they have said, or have purported to say about them or their business.

People often get confused by what is meant by the word “published�. “Published� in the context of defamation simply means “communicated�.

If you bring a defamation case against someone the Court will assess your case as follows: • Is the communication likely to injure the reputation of the plaintiff by exposing him/her to hatred, contempt or ridicule? • Does the communication contain a statement about the plaintiff which tends to result in the plaintiff being shunned or avoided? • Does the communication have a tendency to lower the plaintiff in the estimation of others?

The main remedy available to a person who has been defamed is damages (money).

If you find yourself in a position where you think you may have been defamed, have a think about the test you will need to satisfy above before seeking the advice of a defamation lawyer. It may be the case that a simple ‘cease and desist letter’ will be adequate to stop communication from a third party that you think might have the potential of damaging your reputation.

Locals warned of email scam Police are warning the community about emails circulating purporting to be from a financial institution.

St Clair man charged over crash that killed his father in 2010

bus company manager from St Clair has been charged with manslaughter over a tragic crash that killed his father almost seven years ago.

31-year-old Simon Lees, whose father Graham died when the brakes failed on the bus he was driving in 2010, has been arrested and charged with numerous offences.

The incident happened shortly before 7.30pm on Monday, May 14 2010, when 57-year-old Graham Lees was driving a 16-tonne coach south along Nowra Road at Barrengarry just north of Kangaroo Valley.

The bus left the roadway and crashed through the guard rail, sliding 40 metres down a hillside.

Mr Lees was thrown from the bus and died at the scene, while several of the 28 passengers on board were also injured.

At the time of the crash the bus was on its way to a carers retreat.

fective due to inadequate maintenance, and that a transmission output retarder intended to reduce the demand on the brakes was disconnected.

The front brakes, which were in good condition, were unable to control the speed of the bus as it rolled downhill to its demise.

Simon Lees was charged with ‘recklessly cause grievous bodily harm’, two counts of ‘act with intent to pervert the course of justice’, ‘hinder investigation of a serious indictable offence of another’, ‘conceal a serious indictable offence of another’, and ‘publish etc false misleading material to obtain property’.

His arrest follows that of another man, a 40-year-old mechanic from Picton, who was also charged with manslaughter among other offences on Thursday, January 12.

The arrests come following extensive inquiries, including mechanical examination of the bus, by police attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol’s Crash Investigation Unit.

Mr Lees was granted conditional bail and will appear in Moss Vale Local Court on Tuesday, April 18.

Jobs flushed: Penrith staff moved to Parramatta as part of water shake-up 180 positions to shift from Station Street office, forcing more locals onto the M4 and public transport JADE ALIPRANDI

t least 180 Penrith-based jobs will be moved to Parramatta following the decision to base WaterNSW at the Western Sydney University Campus.

The decision was made last year but staff now face the reality of their final weeks working in Penrith.

The Weekender understands that staff have been gagged from talking to the media about the move, but a well-placed source close to one of the people affected says a large number of WaterNSW employees that will be impacted are Penrith locals.

“Not only will we lose them from our daily local economy, it will force these people onto public transport,” the source said.

“I thought the whole idea of placing government departments, such as WaterNSW, out in ‘regional cities’ was to boost local jobs and the economy whilst taking the pressure off major cities.

“This person will be majorly affected by this change – they really don’t know what they’re going to do as it does not work well for their family.

“The stress the Government has placed on the staff is not fair.”

A spokesperson for WaterNSW told the Weekender Parramatta was an ideal location for the organisation.

“Parramatta was selected as the best option for consolidating the metropolitan teams,” the spokesperson said.

“It is also the midpoint between the existing offices in the Sydney CBD and Penrith, and is the location for WaterNSW’s largest customer and partner in delivering Sydney’s drinking water, Sydney Water.”

State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, told the Weekender staff members across all metropolitan areas were involved in the consultation process.

“Non-government investment in Penrith continues to go from strength to strength, generating more local jobs than any government department could deliver.”

The source added that staff were faced with a restructure just last year when Sydney Catchment Authority, State Water and part of the NSW Department of Primary Industries were joined.

“Some lost their jobs whilst most had to reapply for their positions by way of submitting resumes, and then going through the interview process,” the source said.

“This went on for months and then after finally winning their jobs, the CEO and the board threw this at them.”

More government jobs being based in Penrith is always touted as a must for the city’s future.

Chair of the Advocacy Committee at Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce, Gordon Henwood, said losing 180 jobs to

Parramatta was an “insult to Penrith” and labelled it a “joke”.

“It really is taking a step back from what we need,” Mr Henwood said.

“The rest of the Sydney basin is suffering damage from focus on Parramatta and Olympic Park – it’s damaging every other regional centre in the Sydney basin and they’re just going to keep going.”

Mr Henwood said Penrith was short on jobs that allowed people to work close to home.

The move to Parramatta is expected to take place in late May.

enrith Whitewater Stadium is rapidly losing its battle to stay open, with funding for marketing and upgrades decreasing over the last financial year.

General Manager Jack Hodge addressed Penrith Council’s Policy Review meeting on Monday to provide an overview of the past year and an insight into next year.

He explained the facility is often caught off guard when it’s particularly colder and when it’s also a lot hotter, both of which have occurred over the last year.

“We have other issues in terms of income and expenses such as low rafting patronage, the cost of electricity, the catchment and water quality management and asset maintenance and renewal,” he said.

“We currently have reasonable patronage, which is great due to the current weather.”

Chairman of the Board of Directors, Councillor Ross Fowler, said if Council wants a better facility, they may need to look at a financial investment.

“If you look back at history, this is one of the great success stories at Penrith Council,” he said.

“It was the first time in the history of

Councillor Ross Fowler with Jack Hodge at Penrith Whitewater Stadium this week the Olympics that a sporting group had entered into an arrangement to provide a venue to conduct any actual sport – if we hadn’t had Canoe Slalom in 2000, it probably wouldn’t be in the Olympics now.

“It’s important to also recognise that while Council has given a lot of support, we haven’t put in $1 other than the original loan, that was paid back with interest.

“I’d like to congratulate the people who operate and run it, they’ve done a great service for this area.”

The facility’s marketing costs were down 98 per cent over the last year, with councillors questioning how people will know it’s there to use.

“The facility should be pushed as a tourist hub,” Cr Greg Davies said.

Dash cam footage helps police track down dangerous truckie EMILY NEWTON

olice from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command are cracking down on dangerous truck driving after numerous complaints from the public.

An investigation commenced into the dangerous driving of a truck on the Great Western Highway at St Marys after it was captured on dash cam footage.

“Investigators were contacted by several witnesses after footage of the truck allegedly being driven dangerously was uploaded to social media, allowing them to identify the truck and trailer involved,” a Police spokesperson said.

At 10am on Thursday, March 9, the owner of the truck presented two trucks to the Wetherill Park Heavy Vehicle Inspection Station as directed and investigators spoke to the 31-year-old Victorian male driver of the truck the following day.

“All vehicles were inspected with the vehicle of interest being issued a yellow defect, major defect notice,” the Police spokesperson said.

The driver was issued a field court attendance notice for ‘driving in a manner dangerous’, ‘negligent driving’ and ‘not give way when moving from one marked lane to another’ and will appear

The incident occurred following multiple truck inquiries by police including an incident where a tipper and dog in St Marys was found to have been defective, allowing for a top travel speed of 159km/h as reported by the Weekender on February 10.

“We make no excuses for stopping these drivers and if necessary can ensure they are taken off the road for a period of time,” Superintendent Stuart Smith of the NSW Traffic and Highway Patrol Command said.

wo six-year-old boys from Our Lady of the Way Primary School have formed an unbreakable friendship, being named the ‘little warriors’ of the school.

Max Selby and Edward Lennon require regular rehabilitation and ongoing care as patients at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

This month, their families are throwing their support behind the Bandaged Bear Appeal as they applaud the crucial work and support of the hospital.

Edward’s mum, Patricia Smythe, said the brain tumor that was removed when Edward was just two-years-old has created ongoing obstacles.

“Everyone was under the impression that because it was benign and fully removed he would be fine, but that’s not the case,” she said.

“He has no feeling on the left side of his body. It will be something he has to manage for his whole life.”

Ms Smythe said there is a ripple effect of complications as children grow older, and praises the hospital for their dedication and commitment.

“They have been so good trying to come up with ideas as we bump into new hurdles. There wasn’t one person who didn’t treat us just so kindly,” she said.

Max’s mum, Rochelle Mason, recalls when circumstances dramatically changed for her family last year.

“Max has chronic renal disease... he got very sick at four-months-old and that was our first visit to The Children’s Hospital,” she said.

“Our situation escalated in May last year, and Max had a complication in surgery.

We had to amputate one of his legs, and he was in ICU for 40 days.”

The hospital created a custom Iron Man themed prosthetic leg for Max to help encourage his independence.

Edward and Max met in Kindergarten and formed a close friendship while supporting each other at school.

“They started talking about their war wounds, and it’s like a scar of achievement,” Ms Mason said.

“It’s just beautiful and we call them two warriors. Even though they might not talk about it, they know they have each other.”

Just days out from the first Thornton Markets of 2017, unexpected news from Penrith Council has forced the event to close effective immediately.

The news came as a “big surprise” to organiser Katrina James, who first heard about the decision after receiving a phone call from a vendor.

On Wednesday morning, Ms James was told that because she did not have an approved Development Application (DA) for the food stalls and noise, Thornton Markets could no longer run.

“They said because the DA isn’t officially in, that’s it,” she said.

“They said if we do trade, they will fine them. It’s a huge risk to the vendors... the food is an integral part of what we do.”

Ms James said she has been already been knocked back on a DA twice, the most recent at the end of last year.

“Two weeks after they said everything was fine, they said, ‘actually you now need this noise check done’,” she said.

“How can I do a noise check without holding another market?”

A spokesperson from Penrith Council told the Weekender that they are supportive of the markets, but their concern was the noise on nearby residents.

“Council has been working with the organisers of Thornton Markets for the past eight months and has been issuing conditional consent on the provision that a DA was forthcoming,” he said.

“Council suggested alternatives to mitigate noise on residents, however the operators have indicated they wish to remain trading under their current arrangements.”

I was delighted to read the letter from Keith Everett (Dear Weekender, Weekender March 10). Mr Everett has been a regular and longstanding contributor to ‘Dear Weekender’ and I’d certainly missed reading his opinion pieces over the last few months. Why Bryce should speak While we can debate about the Bryce Cartwright situation being private or public as much as we like, it is VERY public now. f you have been to Nepean Hospital in the past eight and a half years, you might recognise the smiling face of volunteer Jill McLucas.

Helping with a bit of everything including delivering magazines, sorting out morning tea and having a giggle with patients, Ms McLucas sees the hospital as part of her identity now.

“I just think it’s wonderful to go around and be with the patients and have a laugh,” she said.

“The same patients come by and you get to sit and have a talk and get to know them, I love it.”

She is just one of the many volunteers across the state that are being celebrated by patients, staff and health professionals during NSW Health Volunteer Week this week.

A patient at Nepean Hospital herself 10 years ago for breast cancer, she tragically lost her husband to a stroke as she was undergoing treatment.

“The staff and volunteers at the hospital were amazing support during it all,” she said.

“I coped, I’m not sure how, but keeping busy helped.”

Having previously never volunteered, Ms McLucas found immense enjoyment in helping others as she recovered from losing her husband.

Recognised as Volunteer of the Year three years ago, Ms McLucas said there’s no time like the present to lend a helping hand.

“Just come and do it, especially if you are on your own like I am,” she said.

magine being just 13-years-old and facing the reality of never being able to have children.

That is what confronted Penrith’s Lauren Jones almost 15 years ago when she was diagnosed with endometriosis.

Endometriosis Awareness Month is encouraging women to speak up about their experiences to end the silence surrounding the disease.

Now 27, Ms Jones is hopeful that she will be able to start her own family as endometriosis becomes more understood.

“At first I really just didn’t actually care.

I had no idea what it was,” Ms Jones said.

“All up I have had 11 surgeries.”

Endometriosis is when the cells that line the uterus grow in places outside the uterus, such as the pelvis.

One in 10 women of reproductive age are affected by the condition that can cause months of ongoing physical pain.

“I missed out on a significant amount of school,” Ms Jones recalls.

“Recovery varied from three days to a month in hospital depending on complications. I’ve had my stitches open at my belly button before, I’ve been stapled, I’ve been off work for an entire school term just from surgery.”

Since then, she has suffered almost no side effects.

“It’s really relieving to think that I can have a life,” she said.

Ms Jones said that each day is a struggle with the disease.

“Even simple things like going on a date are hard, because so often you don’t feel like going on a date because you just can’t get up,” she said.

“Now I’m pretty hopeful to find someone, because I won’t be out of action for 10 months of the year.”

A dream has finally become a reality for the Luke Priddis Foundation, which officially opened its Centre for Autism on High Street in Penrith on Monday.

The Foundation, started by former Penrith Panthers rugby league star Luke Priddis and his wife Holly, supports children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

The new Centre will build on the work the Foundation has done over the last decade and allow it to expand its services.

“We carry the history of the parents that came before us and the parents that are yet to follow the path we have travelled,” Mrs Priddis said.

“These walls hold space for families that are following that road, that may be littered with grief but most importantly hope. This is their space.”

The opening was attended by Lindsay MP Emma Husar, Penrith MP Stuart Ayres and Mayor John Thain.

Chance to dispose of potentially dangerous asbestos for free

Students come together as one to celebrate Harmony Day EMILY NEWTON

tudents at Montgrove College in Orchard Hills are breaking down cultural barriers today (Friday, March 17) as they unite to celebrate Harmony Day. Organiser Vengie Pangilinan said this is the school’s sixth Harmony Day event celebrating Australia’s cultural diversity.

“We are blessed with a multicultural school and it is so rich with the different types of cultures,” she said.

“When students talk about Harmony Day, they speak about it with so much fondness.”

To broaden their cultural horizons, students will get a taste of different countries to increase their understanding and appreciation of the culturally diverse community.

“It starts with exhibits and display stalls where the parents display artefacts from all different countries,” Ms Pangilinan said.

Bursting with energy, the children have spent weeks rehearsing their choice of a traditional song or dance they will perform today.

“It was really beautiful to see them committing themselves, for example, a Filipino doing an Indian dance, an African doing a Chinese dance – it’s really

Asbestos building products were used widely across western Sydney during the post-war housing boom creating what is now known as Sydney’s ‘fibro belt’.

By the 1980s almost one third of western Sydney homes were clad in asbestos fibro sheeting, and many more used asbestoscontaining products in bathrooms, laundries, kitchens and electrical switchboards.

While most houses built prior to 1980 will contain some asbestos building products, there is generally minimal risk when sheeting is kept in good condition and left undisturbed.

Of greater concern is unsealed, loose fibro sheeting that may be stored in local backyards, behind sheds, or in garages – a legacy of past renovations.

Western Sydney councils want to help safely dispose of this asbestos before it reaches the high-risk stage, which is why WSROC has brought back the Western Sydney Residential Asbestos Disposal Scheme (WSRADS) in 2017.

For a limited time, the WSRADS program will help western Sydney households dispose of small amounts of unattached asbestos fibro sheeting free of charge.

Local registrations will open in the coming weeks, with collections occurring until May 2017.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK TO DELIVER UP TO 55,000 NEW JOBS Penrith Council has presented the framework that will help deliver up to 55,000 new local jobs by 2031.

Earlier this week I was proud to host the inaugural Innovation Seminar Series that showcased Penrith as the centre of the new Sydney ‘Innovation Corridor’. Keynote speakers included leaders and innovators in their respective sectors, along with our City partners who are helping grow the local economy. The seminars highlight how far Penrith has come as a City and where we are heading.

Next weekend we have the return of our popular river series events ‘Music by the River’, the first of the year so if you’re looking to chill out on a Sunday afternoon by the river listening to some great local performers then pop on down. The river will be the place to be in 2017 and will culminate later in the year with the hugely popular Real Festival bringing the river to life with a focus on the arts, environment and our lifestyle.

In the meantime, keep your eye out as I make my way around our city recognising the work of so many people who make Penrith such a great place to live. I am in a privileged position where I get to see what so many people do across all walks of life to make our City great and your efforts never cease to amaze me.

WESTERN SYDNEY CLEARED FOR TAKE-OFF In December, the Australian Government released the Airport Plan for Western Sydney Airport at Badgerys Creek. The Plan outlines the concept for Stage 1 of the airport’s development which will cater for up to 10 million passengers and 63,000 air traffic movements annually by 2030.

For the first time in more than 220 years major investment in infrastructure is taking place in Western Sydney, and the airport is a big part of that picture.

Council sees the airport as the catalyst for potential that can only be fully realised if all the agencies – local, state and federal work together to plan and deliver a more productive and connected region.

Council is committed to working with the Government to deliver a new airport

that delivers maximum benefits to the region in terms of transport and infrastructure provision, employment and economic development.

Road upgrades are well underway with more to come. The Government has also committed that rail will be operational when the airport opens. Council is continuing to push for a North-South rail line that will link the airport with the North-West and South-West growth centres.

We will continue to advocate strongly on the community’s behalf to ensure noise impacts are not unfairly burdened on any one community. We’re also working hard to ensure our community benefits from the maximum infrastructure, economic and job opportunities that will flow as a result of the future airport.

In October, Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, and then NSW Premier, Mike Baird, created a formal partnership to work together on ‘City Deals’ in New South Wales – starting with the Western Sydney City Deal. from 2024 to 2040.

The City Deal will bring together all three levels of government in a collaborative partnership to create a region that is more liveable and more productive.

For a long time Penrith Council, alongside the National Growth Areas Alliance has lobbied strongly for such an approach to our region and it’s wonderful to see it becoming a reality.

We’d like to see the City Deal for Western Sydney transform the region through a program that transcends governments and delivers real, positive change over the next two decades.

One of the keys to this transformation and the success of the Western Sydney City Deal is rail. Rail has the power to change everything. The North-South rail link Council has been advocating for will be key to the success of the City Deal.

It will create 60,000 jobs and boost the economy to the tune of $44.7 billion

The Western Sydney City Deal should supercharge economic investment and job creation – driving productivity, jobs growth and liveability. Creating some structure and certainty about the Government’s direction, alongside investment is the first step, and we’re confident the private sector will follow suit.

To be successful the City Deal must include all levels of government, each with real investment in the outcomes.

Local Government will play a leading role in this, and it will require each Western Sydney Council to think beyond the boundaries of their local areas and start to see the region-wide picture.

Penrith Council has a strong track record of working on behalf of the region and we intend to continue to lead the way through the development and implementation of the Western Sydney City Deal.

Penrith is excited to be hosting the Sydney leg of the Australian Corporate Triathlon at the world-class International Regatta Centre on Sunday 23 April.

It’s the first time the event has been held outside of Sydney Harbour and there is no better place for this iconic race than Penrith – the Adventure Capital of NSW. Up to 2,000 participants will swim, ride and run their way to triathlon glory at the Olympic venue which is one of the best triathlon courses in the world.

This is a once in a life time experience.

It’s also a unique opportunity to meet industry counterparts, members of the local community and business owners, while enjoying all that Penrith has to offer.

Teams will also be raising money and boosting awareness around the link between mental health, exercise and healthy working relationships.

At 8.30pm on Saturday 25 March, Penrith City Council will be taking part in Earth Hour and “switching off to join the future”.

Earth Hour is celebrating 10 years since it was started right here in Sydney, and we’re proud to be celebrating our 10th anniversary of supporting this worthy event.

What started off as a local initiative has become a global phenomenon with 50-100 million people across 35 different countries now taking part and supporting progress for future generations.

Council will take part again this year,

switching off all non-essential lighting at Council facilities. We encourage everyone in the community to get involved as well – switch off the lights at home or work and join the future.

Sustainability and protecting and preserving our environment is a high priority for Council, and know the community feels the same way, and so we thought there was no better time to share some of the great things we have achieved over the last 10 years.

A new adult change facility in the Penrith CBD is now open and being used.

Situated in the arcade adjoining the Triangle Park, the $80,000 unisex change room is set to transform lives for many people. The lack of appropriate toileting facilities has previously been a fundamental barrier to social inclusion but these new facilities will allow people with a disability to go places.

The adult change room make it so much easier for people with a disability to

get out and about in Penrith and enjoy their time in the City knowing that their toiletry and hygiene needs are catered for, giving both themselves and their carers a sense of freedom and dignity.

The spacious change room features a height adjustable adult-sized changing bench, a tracking hoist system and a safe and clean environment and is the first of several that will be installed around Penrith and St Marys with the next location, East Lane in St Marys expected to be completed by the end of the year.

DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE MEN’S SHEDS IN PENRITH? Since 2010, Council officers have been working to fill a gap in local men’s services - the provision of designated gathering spaces for men - or, as it has become known, the ‘Men’s Shed movement’.

The Men’s Shed’s movement offers all males over the age of 18, regardless of their circumstances, a space where they can connect with each other and pass on their skills. Their motto is “Men don’t talk face to face- they talk shoulder to shoulder”.

A major report by Beyond Blue into the benefit of Men’s Sheds in 2013 found that Men’s Sheds help men cope during significant life changes such as retirement, and are ideally placed to have positive impacts on the mental health and wellbeing of their members.

Council is proud to have these social assets running in our local community and will continue to be involved in supporting them into the future.

THE JOAN GETS SPICY! Penrith Performing & Visual Arts celebrates culture, diversity and connection right here at the heart of Creative Penrith - the multicultural west.

This year things will be turned up another notch when Spicy Penrith – the region’s much-loved multicultural festival - takes up residence at the Joan. Spicy Penrith in all its sizzling glory is part of an evocative sensation of blended ideas, cultural sounds, smells and brilliant colour.

Furthering the search for meaning, Circus Oz – Australia’s high octane, cruelty-free rock’n’roll circus – will explore what it really means to be a model citizen in our ‘lucky’ country today. The show, Model Citizens (26 & 27 May), will blend the risk, beauty and rawness of acrobatic circus with pumping music and stunning lighting to take the audience on a visually and emotionally charged journey as thought provoking as it is thrilling.

At Spicy Penrith, 1 April from 5pm, performers will come together for a day of music, great food and dance showcasing the vibrant subcontinental cultures of Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and India. This fun, festive family day offers everyone the chance to experience the interconnection and cultural flavours of the wonderfully diverse west.

Also celebrating and exploring cultural identity, while adding some spice to traditional theatrical form is The Joan’s homegrown production, Black Birds.

PENRITH’S VISITOR GUIDE GETS THE STAR TREATMENT Several high-profile locals feature in the latest edition of Penrith’s Visitor Guide to share their favourite things to do and places to go in the region.

Included in the new guide are Zokoko’s Michelle Morgan, Penrith Performing & Visual Arts CEO Hania Radvan, Triple M’s Mark Geyer, Olympic medallist Jessica Fox and Television presenter Jason Dundas.

The Pantherettes will debut the new look against the Roosters on Saturday night, moving away from the ‘catsuit’ concept that was introduced a few years ago. The rationale behind the change is the Pantherettes wanted to do more spectacular athletic and acrobatic routines. It couldn’t be done in the old outfits, which looked good, but weren’t practical in terms of throwing people in the air.

forward Bryce Cartwright. After leaving the field with an ankle injury early in the clash against the Tigers last weekend, Cartwright had scans to confirm what had gone wrong and received a positive diagnosis from doctors. There’s no fracture in the ankle – just bone bruising. That means Cartwright won’t be out for long and could even play against the Roosters on Saturday night.

of the NRL during his playing days, enjoying stints at the Dragons, Eels and Roosters, as well as Wigan overseas. But it seems his sons aren’t impressed with Piggy’s feats at those clubs, and have chosen to support the mighty Panthers.

Riddell is actually living in this part of the world at the moment, enjoying life and earning a few dollars as part of 2GB’s Continuous Call team.

making a Daryl Somers-like comeback to free-to-air TV. There’s talk that Fox Sports is in negotiations with Channel Seven to simulcast the Rugby League World Cup, due to be held later this year. T

he Penrith Panthers finally make their debut at Pepper Stadium on Saturday night as they prepare to settle in for a run that will see them only have to travel once between now and late April.

After brushing aside their round one form to demolish the Wests Tigers at Campbelltown Stadium last Sunday, the Panthers would be feeling confident as they prepare to take on the undefeated competition heavyweights in the shape of the Sydney Roosters.

It is a game that promises so much, with both sides considered legitimate Premiership hopes and both displaying in equal

measure their strengths and weaknesses over the first two weeks of the new season.

And just to add a little something extra to the contest, the winner of this game will grab some bragging rights with the ledger split at 17 wins each out of the 34 games these sides have played against each other since the NRL was formed in 1998.

Along that journey the Panthers have won the games that mattered – the 2003 Grand Final being the highlight, while the 2014 Finals win at Allianz Stadium is something every Penrith fan keeps in their memory bank.

The past is just that, however, and both the Panthers and Roosters very much have squads that are all about the future.

The Roosters obviously edge the Panthers on experience and certainly this Saturday’s clash will test Penrith’s youth against a side that can make you pay for defensive lapses, particularly up the

middle. With Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Dylan Napa up front, the Roosters are a formidable force.

The loss of Blake Ferguson is significant for the Roosters but they still offer a potent backline with plenty of points in it, and a halves pairing that is proving more than capable of creating the opportunities that backline needs.

Penrith improved all over the park against the Tigers but they will still need to improve. James Tamou showed glimpses of his Cowboys form last weekend but will need to lift again this week, as will Trent Merrin who was vastly improved in round 2 compared to his opening round effort against the Dragons.

If you accept that the game is pretty evenly matched, then you have to ask where the flaws are in the Roosters to ensure Penrith can capitalise on them and sneak home.

While their opening wins against the Titans and the Bulldogs were no doubt impressive, I do have some question marks over their intensity for the full 80 minutes. In fact it’s important to note that the Roosters have actually lost the second half in both of their opening games and came close to getting run down by Canterbury last Thursday night.

The Panthers on the other hand showed against the Tigers that they can maintain their ‘on switch’ for the full 80 – unfortunately they couldn’t find it against the Dragons the week before.

The Panthers also boast the better bench, and the Roosters will be given very little reprieve from the forward onslaught with James Fisher-Harris, Leilani Latu and newcomer Viliame Kikau all ready to come on after the initial stages.

This promises to be an absolute belter.

fter a lackluster performance in the opening round, Penrith’s forward pack showed the competition what they are truly made of against the Wests Tigers last Sunday afternoon.

On the back of an impressive debut from Fijian monster Viliame Kikau and high energy minutes from James Fisher-Harris and Sitaleki Akauola, Penrith dominated the Tigers through the middle and defended like their life depended on it.

New recruit James Tamou – who ran for 142 metres against the Tigers as opposed to 80 metres against the Dragons the week before – said he and his fellow forwards met with coaching staff prior to last weekend’s game to discuss how they

were going to turn things around after the opening round debacle.

“We sat down and had a talk about it, but we didn’t see it as a crisis or anything like that,” he revealed to Extra Time.

“We knew what the problem was, we knew what we had to do. It was just talking about it and putting it into action on the park, and I believe we did that.”

Tamou wasn’t the only Panthers forward to improve on their opening round performance, with Trent Merrin and Reagan Campbell-Gillard also cracking the 100 metres run mark and looking their usual selves.

For the Cowboys premiership winner though, he blamed nerves for his uninspiring debut with his new club.

“My performance this week was a lot better than Round 1,” Tamou admitted.

“I’d have to put it down to nerves in that first game, I hadn’t felt like that for a while.”

Scoring a try and running for 70 metres, the former North Queensland youngster was the star attraction in Penrith’s 36-2 flogging of the Tigers.

Tamou, who once mentored Kikau at the Cowboys, labelled it one of the most impressive first grade debuts he’s ever seen.

“It was an impressive debut alright, I haven’t seen one like that in a while,” he said.

“We all know what he is capable of… he’s

a big boy, he’s got good footwork, he can offload and hit hard.

“He had a few injuries last year and hadn’t enjoyed a full pre-season with Penrith yet, so that would’ve done him good.”

The Panthers will look for back to back wins when they take on the Sydney Roosters this Saturday night at Pepper Stadium.

With the Roosters undefeated to start the year, Tamou said Penrith are going to have their hands full.

“They are a good side, a really good side,” he said.

Drug testing is strong in rugby league

he Tim Simona story has blown up this week but I can’t stress enough that it only blew up after someone was caught betting against their own team.

Tim’s story rocked the rugby league world on Sunday when he openly admitted to using illicit drugs during his playing career.

The thing we need to remember is that Tim’s case is an isolated one, because he decided to tell his story.

Plenty of people deal with private issues in their own way but Tim’s decided to come clean to the public, and that’s how he’s coping with it.

But to create a rugby league issue by saying players are taking illicit drugs on weekends and looking for that long turnaround to get away with it is absolute rubbish.

I can personally say I’ve never been involved with a club or known players that go out and do illicit drugs.

Yes, players are entitled to downtime and it’s up to them how they represent themselves and their brand, but we’ve got to remember that one person’s reputation is on the line and there’s a lot of influential

kids reading these articles. Tim was dealing with his issues of gambling and his drug use only became public on the back of that.

Tim’s dealing with this situation in his own way, and this is how he’s getting through it.

The NRL has strict drug testing in place and, if you decide to run that risk and get caught, then that’s your career down the gurgler.

There are a number of drug testing scenarios that take place at clubs.

One of the big tests is with WADA – the World Anti Doping Agency – where six blokes show up, get you to pull down your pants and watch you urinate into a cup from start to finish.

The NRL also run their own drug tests every year as do the clubs themselves.

The club will randomly pick out 10 names and someone at the club is trusted to watch the process take place (similar to the WADA drug test).

Players could get tested 10 weeks in a row – there’s no limit to how many times you get tested – so if you’re going out on a Friday night, do illicit drugs and get caught on a Monday then you’re an idiot.

I’m happy with the drugs policy in place by the NRL, but I think we need to deal with each case as it comes.

Thankfully, we are not getting 10 players caught every year.

E

very day 12 Australian women will be diagnosed with cervical or ovarian cancer, and four of those women will sadly die.

To help combat this terribly sad statistic, the Australian Gynaecological Cancer Foundation (AGCF) works very hard to raise awareness of, and fund research for, the prevention, detection and treatment of gynaecological cancers in Australia.

On Wednesday morning, the Panthers Women in League donated $41,000 to assist the AGCF in their mission to reduce the mortality rates and other impacts of these diseases on Australian women, their partners, families and the wider community.

The significant funds were raised by the club during a special race day at Randwick Racecourse last year.

Well-known philanthropist and AGCF ambassador Marie Sutton, who is best known for bringing the late Princess Diana to Australia back in 1996, explained why

the Foundation was so close to her heart.

“I had two close friends that had Ovarian cancer and both died at a young age,” she told Extra Time.

“I was really happy to get involved with the AGCF because I’ve helped out so many other causes in the past and this is one I hadn’t touched on yet.

“There are so many young people dying from so many different female cancers that it’s important to do all that we can to help prevent it.”

Funds were raised through various auctions during the race day, with Panthers coach Anthony Griffin even getting involved by bidding and winning a breakfast with 2GB host Alan Jones.

“It was fantastic to have Panthers involved – it was a joyful and happy day, and everyone had a good time,” Ms Sutton said.

“We need as much exposure as we can for the AGCF, and I’d like to do another event this year and raise even more money.”

FOX League presenter Yvonne Sampson hosted Wednesday’s function at the Panthers Academy while her former colleague and Panthers boss Phil Gould is also an official AGCF ambassador.

If I was tipping for my life, I’d be dead

I

have made this statement before in relation to attempting to consistently forecast the result of rugby league matches.

If I were tipping for my life, I would have died many times over.

There is just no such thing as a certainty in the NRL. Just the mere fact that for the last seven years we’ve had seven different premiers should set off the alarm bells that we have a bloody close competition.

And week to week the old adage of any team being able to beat any other on a given day rings true.

We are just two weeks into a new season and I have to admit, I’m a mess.

I wrote before round one I could not remember an opening to a year where I was so uncertain about every game.

I joked I should probably go the opposite of what I locked in as expert tips.

I wasn’t laughing when I was 0/5 after the first handful of games.

More broadly, there used to be a time when early in a season you could fall back to the system of going for the home team when in doubt.

Fat lot of good that would have done you

in 2017 as the host team has only won five of the 16 games.

Had the Raiders come through in golden point in week one and the Knights held on to beat the Warriors, that figure would read three of 16.

And then there are the form turnarounds that can drive a tipster to despair.

Look no further than the Panthers winning by 34 points last Sunday after being thrashed by 32 points just eight days earlier.

My cold sweats about the thought of tipping the next round in the NRL start every Monday.

I am now considering asking the editor of this fine publication to make an alteration to the tipping lists to read my tips as actually being that of my six-year-old son, Harry.

He’d pick them by nickname and colours.

Right now, that comes across as true expert logic to me!

ome years, it’s easy to predict what the season ahead is going to bring. There’s a feel around the place; an indication of sorts on whether there will be smiles or tears come September.

In 2001, off the back of a successful 2000 season, everyone expected the Panthers to do well. Nobody could have predicted that Penrith would finish with the wooden spoon – but that’s exactly what happened, and it would set off a chain of events that would eventually rock the club.

Showing just how high expectations were in 2001, club legend Steve Carter

had knocked back big money in England because he believed the club was a realistic hope of winning the title.

Things started to look shaky in the trials when Melbourne thumped Penrith 40-18 and an emerging Tony Puletua suffered a serious knee injury.

In round one, Penrith were totally outplayed by arch rivals Parramatta, going down 40-4. To make matters worse, star centre Ryan Girdler was injured in the capitulation.

A 38-22 loss to Brisbane followed, then a 42-34 defeat to the Northern Eagles at Penrith Stadium.

It wasn’t until round four that Penrith finally put a win on the board, downing North Queensland 32-18.

Two straight home loses followed – to the Bulldogs and Sharks – and with just one win from the opening six rounds, it was obvious that pre-season expectations were unlikely to be met.

With the side struggling, club officials were becoming aware of growing angst in the playing group, and with a host of stars off contract at the end of the season, they moved to offer stability by re-signing coach Royce Simmons for two years.

On the field, occasional wins were overshadowed by horrific losses, including a 52-8 defeat to the Warriors at Ericsson Stadium in round nine and a 58-14 thrashing at the hands of Melbourne in round 11 at Penrith Stadium.

The year then descended into a farce in August when two members of the Panthers Board met with the players without Simmons, and asked them to air their grievances.

It was the beginning of the end for Simmons’ coaching career at the Panthers. After a 60-18 defeat to Newcastle in the final round, the final nail was placed in the coffin.

love running my own business – and shudder at the thought of working for an employer again! But there are times I wonder: if I knew then, what I know now, would I do it all again? If I were to pen a letter to my younger self, here are the truths I would write: It’s nerve-racking You will experience great joy and thrills, but in between you will be anxious, nervous, stressed and fearful about the future. But use these as your motivation and learn quickly that you can use this nervous energy to propel you forward.

Remember not to get bogged down in a bad day, but use it as a learning opportunity.

Not all advice is good Most people who are not in business will advise you to give up, telling you it’s not worth the stress. But because they haven’t been in your position, they won’t understand that for you, the benefits generally far outweigh the negatives.

Talk to people who have been through the same stage as you and can give you valuable advice for solving your current

problem. Those same mentors will realign your vision for the future and show you what is possible.

Change is inevitable And in fact, you should expect it. If not, your business won’t be flexible and won’t be able to easily change when required.

Have goals and outcomes to aim for, and be proud of the business you have built. But be prepared to change direction and accept that your business may look different to what you envisioned.

Perfection is not a requirement As much as you’ll want to spend extra time on some projects so that they meet your perfectionist standards, you will need to learn the hard truth that ‘time is money’.

There is an art to knowing when to launch a new idea, and when to keep honing it. This doesn’t mean you need to aim for mediocrity. But it does mean learning the difference between what matters and what doesn’t. Vince Lombardi once said: “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence�.

H

ow many times have you been asked “What do you do?� when meeting someone? The typical response is “I’m an X� and maybe we embellish a little with how we do it, or what we consider our unique value proposition to be. These introductions may be at a networking meeting (one-on-one or in front of the group), a training workshop or when introducing ourselves to a new contact in business or in pleasure.

These introductions can get quite tedious, when you’ve heard four times at that event, “I’m an accountant, I do tax returns and BAS statements for business owners� – all a ‘what’ statement. Yes, the question is answered, but did it trigger anything but, “oh gosh another one?�

How could the accountant, or you more importantly, have handled the question differently?

There is a famous TED talk by Simon Sinek, ‘Start With Why’, which is worth viewing. It is key to note that we are triggered by emotion and gut reaction, so your introduction must spark emotional interest.

By addressing the why and how more than the what, we can elicit interest.

This can be done other ways like communicating a short story where you’ve helped a client, but if in doubt this approach is great.

Lukas Gilkey has a less known video on the ‘Elevator Pitch’.

Elevator Pitch gets its name from being a ‘sales pitch’ that you’d do in an elevator if you met the Chief Executive of a target company while catching the lift.

It must be short and do enough to grab attention. Lukas also focuses on the Simon Sinek ‘Start With Why’ approach but concludes with a question, which is such a different approach, and can only encourage further engagement!

Being different and passionate definitely stands out at an event.

An example of the why, how, what with a question to encourage further conversation may be: “Clients love that I can restore clarity and passion for their business, by addressing barriers in their way, through providing quality tailored business advice. How are you feeling about your business?�

Festival brings Mountains to life

he beautiful town of Katoomba is set to transform into music lovers heaven this weekend for the annual Blue Mountains Music Festival.

Running across three big days, the festival will celebrate its 22nd year with some of the best blues, roots and folk artists.

One of the acts that will be taking part in the festival is The Waifs, who this year celebrate 25 years as a band.

“We are truly humbled and blessed to have been able to do the thing we love, with the people we love, for the people we love, for so long,” said band member Joshua Cunningham.

“There are many artists more talented than we, who never get the chance to experience what we have. It’s certainly not lost on us and we are incredibly grateful.”

As part of the celebrations the band have released a new album ‘Ironbark’, which was recorded in Josh’s home in rural NSW. “We tried to strip things back to the elemental sound of the band and recorded in an unconventional way by

just setting up in a beautiful environment that was comfortable and familiar to us rather than a traditional studio,” he said.

The Waifs are looking forward to bringing their music – both old and new – to the popular Mountains event.

The festival format is one the band have become very familiar with over the last couple of decades.

“Festivals are a highlight,” Josh said.

“You get to interact with people in a more relaxed way because there’s more time to share.

“When you throw into the mix the family nature of events like the Blue Mountains Music Festival, it’s a beautiful thing.”

Joining The Waifs is festival headliner and musical poet Paul Kelly, who will team up with esteemed musician Charlie Owen as they perform tracks from their first collaboration ‘Death’s Dateless Night’.

The Blue Mountains Music Festival lineup will also include Yolngu artist Gawurra, hip hop artist Urthboy and Scottish singer/songwriter Eddi Reader, along with a host of local and international musicians.

Counting down the hits

olly Meldrum’s ‘Countdown’ has become cemented in music history as one of Australia’s most loved music shows and the launching pad for some of our greatest ever musical acts.

It seems rock band Dragon can’t get enough of ‘Countdown’ either, with the band hitting the road this year for round two of their ‘Countdown’ themed tour.

In 2016, the band sold out gigs around the country and now they’re returning to the stage with ‘Countdown Oz Chartbusters’.

The show will be an all Aussie affair featuring some of the greatest home grown tracks from the 70s and 80s

including music from The Bee Gees, Skyhooks, AC/DC, The Angels, Rose Tattoo, Split Enz and more.

“Even though they are incredibly diverse there is such an Australasian character that comes through,” bassist Todd Hunter said.

“From Sherbet to AC/DC, it’s great to pay homage to the music that was the soundtrack to all our lives.”

Of course it wouldn’t be a Dragon show without the band’s hits, and audiences will enjoy a set-list that includes classic tracks ‘April Sun in Cuba’ and ‘Are You Old Enough’.

We all want to be able to live comfortably when we retire, and sacrificing more of your salary into your superannuation is a great way to achieve your goals A very popular financial strategy is to salary sacrifice part of our income into superannuation. This is an excellent method of reducing tax and is very popular for this reason.

Saving tax is always a good thing but, as we all know, in this world you need to give something to get something and that is certainly the case with salary sacrifice.

In order to get the tax saving, we give up access to our money until we reach a condition of release. Outside exceptions, this is generally retirement or reaching age 65.

The tax benefits are excellent. Money salary sacrificed is taxed at 15 per cent instead of marginal tax rates. This can be a tax saving of up to 30 per cent for those on the maximum tax rate and is a saving of 17.5-22 per cent for most people (those earning between $37,000-$180,000).

In addition, earnings inside super are taxed at 15 per cent for income and 10 per cent for capital gains. This is instead of the marginal tax rates for earnings outside the super system.

In practice, if someone earning $80,000pa was to salary sacrifice $200 per week pre-tax into superannuation, this would reduce their take home pay by $135 per week. This will reduce their overall tax by $1,820pa and would result in an $8,840pa contribution to super.

These additional contributions, invested for the long term with the benefits of compounding interest, will significantly increase funds available at retirement.

It is clear that salary sacrifice is a terrific way to save funds for retirement.

However, there is a cost for doing so. As mentioned earlier, money in the super

system can’t be accessed until a condition of release is met. Other than disablement or severe financial hardship, this means reaching age 65 or retirement.

Unless you are quite close to retirement, salary sacrifice involves denying yourself access to your money for a long period of time. In order to determine if this is appropriate, we like to look at what other goals the client has and whether they have sufficient income and assets to achieve them.

Personally, I am conservative as an advisor and see the liquidity issues of tying up funds in super as a serious consideration.

Brachycephalic comes from the Greek “brachy” meaning short and “cephalic” meaning head. Brachycephalic refers to the group of dogs with short faces, including Pugs, French, English and Australian Bulldogs, Boxers, Boston Terrier, Shi Tzus and Pekingese. These breeds are increasing in popularity due to their appearance and personality. As with every breed there are certain health issues that they may be more prone to.

Most people are aware that typically these dogs have noisy breathing and will often snore. This is caused by a combination of anatomical abnormalities related to the shortened face. It is often termed Brachycephalic Airway Obstruction Syndrome. Brachycephalic dogs commonly have an elongated soft palate.

The soft palate separates the nasal cavity from the oral cavity, when it is enlarged it takes up room in the throat, as it flaps it is heard as snoring and snorting.

Other changes contribute to respiratory issues in brachycephalic dogs. They also have stenotic nares (narrow nostrils), the

smaller the nostril, the more a dog needs to breathe through his mouth and pant.

Conversely, they often have macroglossa (enlarged tongue) that further contributes to airway obstruction. There are two small pockets on either side of the larynx, over time with increased breathing issues they can become everted and further obstruct the throat. The trachea (windpipe) is often very narrow and may also be weak and prone to collapsing.

Most dogs with these changes will still cope on a daily basis. However, with excessive excitement, activity, barking and panting the tissues in the throat can become swollen. Panting is one of the main ways dogs cool themselves. These breeds pant inefficiently so their bodies work harder at it, this in turn increases inflammation and swelling. Due to this combination of issues, brachycephalic dogs are the ones most likely to get heat stress, which can be fatal. It is important to prevent these dogs getting overweight and ensuring they do not get over heated.

Some dogs may require surgical intervention to correct these abnormalities.

The syndrome is progressive and better outcomes are achieved if corrected early.

Some dogs can suffer a collapse of the larynx and require a permanent tracheostomy to breathe.

eyelid abnormalities, predisposing them to a range of eye problems. There is an increased risk of eye prolapse with even minor trauma. Excessively loose eyelids cause lagopthalmos (inability to close the eyelids) leading to dryness and irritation to the eye. Blinding pigmentation may also develop. The hair from the nasal folds can rub directly against the eye.

Knowing what health issues these dogs are likely to encounter helps with early recognition, intervention and management. It can also help prevent life threatening complications. If you have any questions or concerns, please call the clinic to discuss them.

The sole purpose of footwear for toddlers is not about moulding their feet or supporting their limbs, it is for protecting them from the external world (think rough terrain, sharp surfaces, all the nasties out there).

Lightweight and flexible Footwear for your toddler should be light enough for their legs to be able to lift and flexible enough so that their feet can move naturally.

A thick soled, rigid shoe would impede this and make it difficult for your child to walk.

Flexible thin sole

On the bottom of our feet are sensory nerves that tell us when we are in contact with the ground.

A toddler, who has been barefoot, gets placed into footwear as they start walking which results in a loss of sensation.

They then have to stomp their feet down in order to gain some form of sensory input in order to feel stable.

Having a flexible, thinner sole on the shoe allows for sensory information and a more natural walk.

Fit Ensure that there is adequate room at the toes regarding depth and width.

Check to make sure the shoe isn’t pressing down onto their toes or toe nails.

Consider the shape of the toe box of the shoe and see if it matches your child.

Footwear that has adjustable fasteners (whether laces, Velcro or buckles) is more favourable as it allows for a more customised fit.

When to see a Podiatrist for your child?

Children are constantly developing and all at different rates so if you are at all concerned, you can always seek podiatric opinion for your child’s feet and for advice regarding footwear.

Other reasons include if your child is a late walker without any other known reason, or if they notice excessive in-toeing (pigeon toed) or out-toeing, and excessively tripping or falling over.

t’s already one of the most popular sports in Penrith with thousands taking to the field every week, now the game of OzTag is set for a revolution with new competition OzTag Tens.

With many contact sports like rugby league heading down a frightening path regarding concussion and long term injury effects, OzTag Tens is hoping to crack the winter sport market as a safer alternative for teenagers and young adults.

Run by Australian OzTag, OzTag Tens will see the game played on full size fields

and teams increase from eight players a side to 10.

Other new rules and innovations include 50/20 kicks, power plays, a mercy rule, and the ability for higher kicking than in normal OzTag. Tries will also be worth two points instead of one.

Known as the OzTag Tens Cup, the Sydney-wide competition will be played at different venues each week including Homebush, Glebe and The Kingsway in St Marys.

Venues will rotate weekly, providing an opportunity for participants to play against teams from different areas.

Penrith OzTag President, Jamie Howard, said OzTag Tens will offer players a safer alternative to contact sport.

“OzTag founder Perry Haddock recently noticed a drop in rugby league participation in the Cronulla region for a variety of reasons,” he told the Weekender.

“Contact sport has many difficult times ahead due to concussion and long term injuries that are becoming more frequent.

“We see a great opportunity for OzTag Tens to become a permanent fixture in winter particularly for the 13-19 age groups.”

The inaugural season of OzTag Tens will see competitions run for boys and girls

aged between 13 and 19-years-old as well as Men’s and Women’s competitions.

Howard said if the upcoming OzTag Tens Cup is a success, he’ll consider running an OzTag Tens competition just for Penrith OzTag players in the future.

“The inaugural competition will be played across Sydney, just to try and get the concept up and running first,” he said.

“If all goes well, our plan is to have a standalone OzTag Tens competition in the Penrith region in the next couple of years.”

The OzTag Tens Cup will kick-off on Sunday, April 30 and will run for 12 weeks.

Matt hopes to Excel in unique sport Werrington Downs driver part of new wave of racers giving the Hyundai Excel a new lease on life NATHAN TAYLOR

he Hyundai Excel was very popular in the late 90s for young people to get around town, but these days the humble Korean hatchback is enjoying a new lease on life on the race track.

Werrington Downs local Matt Price will race his Excel this weekend during the second round of the Series X3 NSW Championship at Eastern Creek.

The Series X3 is a grassroots motorsport class that is based on the X3 Hyundai Excel car. The class is strictly controlled through national CAMS regulations, meaning that the focus is on the driver’s ability and car set-up rather than the amount of horse power in the motor.

Speaking with the Weekender, the 38-year-old air conditioner mechanic said people don’t believe him when he says he races an Excel “Everyone thinks it’s a bit of a ‘piss take’ to be honest but once people see them race in person, everyone is like ‘oh wow, how do I get involved?’,” Price said.

Price never raced anything except for a go-kart before his cousin introduced him to the unique competition last year.

used to be part of his pit crew,” Price said.

“When he moved away he said the car’s yours if you want to step up, so I stepped up last year and ended up finishing 14th for the season.”

Price said while he enjoys the thrill of racing, he especially relishes the family and community aspect of the sport.

Price’s cousin Jon is his pit mechanic while his seven-year-old son Zac is his little assistant.

“My parents live up the coast but they always drive down to watch me race while my wife and kids are always there watching on,” he said.

“The whole competition is like a big family, we are always ‘geeing’ each other up on Facebook but we also help out one another as well. It’s great to be a part of.”

After finishing seventh in the opening round of the 2017 season last month, Price is hoping to perform even better when he hits the Eastern Creek track this Saturday.

Price said after performing a few legal modifications to his suspension and tyre pressure in recent weeks, he’s looking forward to seeing what his little pride and joy can do this round.

“This round will be a big eye opener for me because I expect the car to be a hell of a lot quicker,” he said.

Local basketballer shoots for her dreams after invitation to take part in USA training camp NATHAN TAYLOR

enrith teenager Ella Edwards is one of the hardest working and dedicated young sport stars around.

Five days a week you’ll find the 13-yearold basketballer hitting the hardwood playing for a number of different teams around the Penrith and Blue Mountains areas.

“I play for Glenmore Park, reps for Blue Mountains, a school team as well as local competitions in Blaxland and Katoomba – I only have two nights off a week,” Ella told the Weekender.

The Year 8 Penrith Christian School student has only been playing basketball for four years after one of her ex-teachers introduced her to the sport.

Despite her relatively short amount of time in the game, Ella simply can’t get enough of shooting hoops.

“My former teacher was really passionate and enthusiastic about basketball, and that quickly rubbed off on me,” Ella said.

“I like playing with my friends and the social aspect of it but I also enjoy competing as well.”

And it seems Ella’s competitiveness and natural talent is paying dividends

after she was approached by Princeton University in the United States to train with their players and coaching staff in an upcoming aspiring athletes camp.

Ella was bestowed the opportunity after a scout in the US spotted her playing online.

“My mum got an email from this scout from the NCSA (National Collegiate Scouting Association), who have a website where athletes can upload videos of themselves playing, for colleges to see,” Ella explained.

“One of the coaches from Princeton emailed one of my coaches asking if I was able to come to camp at Princeton University in their school holidays.”

With her dream to play College basketball in the US one day, Ella jumped at the opportunity to see what playing in the American College system would eventually be like.

“I’ve been told the style of play in the US is very different and much quicker, so I’m keen to see how different it is while, at the same time, learning new skills,” the shooting guard said.

“I want to play basketball for a long time – College basketball would be great but I’d certainly like to make a career out of it.”

Ella will fly to the US for the three-day camp in June.

“Having Pat back in the Test team is a great thing for the local district,” he said.

Cummins has played 28 One Day Internationals and 18 T20 Internationals since he earned his first Australia cap at 18, but has no experience in playing for his country in India.

“Let’s hope he can knock Virat Kohli’s (Indian captain) middle stump out of that ground like he did at Howell Oval during the Grand Final,” Small said.

Australia has two Tests left to play in India, with the Third Test beginning yesterday in Ranchi.

Meanwhile, Penrith’s first grade side is through to the finals of the NSW Premier Cricket competition after overcoming Sydney last week to secure the sixth and final spot.

After winning the Limited Overs Grand Final late last month, Small said it’s been a remarkable few weeks for the club.

“The club couldn’t be in better shape both on and off the field,” he said.

he GWS Giants have announced the club’s AFL leadership group for the upcoming 2017 season with Phil Davis and Callan Ward set to lead the club as co-captains for the sixth straight season.

The pair head a seven-man leadership group which has seen Stephen Coniglio elevated to the role of vice-captain and Josh Kelly named in the leadership unit for the first time.

Coniglio takes over the role of vicecaptain from veteran defender Heath Shaw who, after back to back All-Australian seasons, remains in the leadership group alongside forward Devon Smith and midfielder Dylan Shiel.

Defender Matt Buntine moves out of the leadership group but will continue in a mentoring role.

Giants coach Leon Cameron said the leadership team is well balanced.

“We’ve conducted a thorough process and settled on a strong group to take us forward this season,” he said.

“Phil and Callan have been terrific leaders of our club and we look forward to this continuing in 2017.”

Davis has now played 97 AFL games while Ward has 167 games behind him after becoming the first player to reach 100 games for the Giants last season.

“It’s a real honour to continue to lead this club and I’m looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead this season and beyond,” the 26-year-old said.

“We made some good inroads last year but all of us are preparing well for 2017 and looking to improve in all aspects.”

Ward said the club was well served by a number of natural leaders in addition to those identified in the leadership group.

“With a good mix of youth and experience, we’ve put together a strong leadership group that is committed to driving this club forward in 2017,” he said.

“We are fortunate to have a number of outstanding leaders in the playing group, all with their own styles and strengths.

Our players know leadership is a shared responsibility; it’s not just something left to those named in this group.”

Around the grounds CRICKET: Penrith are through to the NSW Premier Cricket finals after defeating Sydney in the final round of the regular season last weekend.

Playing in a One Day Match at Drummoyne Oval, Penrith won the toss and elected to bat first. The visitors started well early before a late order collapse saw them all out for 217. Best with the bat for Penrith was Ryan Gibson on 75. When Sydney hit the crease later that afternoon, they got off to a slow start before making things interesting. Fortunately for Penrith they were on-song with the ball and dismissed Sydney for 193.

Ryan Smith led the way for Penrith taking 2/33. This weekend Penrith will battle minor premiers Sydney University in the Qualifying Finals.

BASKETBALL: Penrith have gone down to the Hills Hornets 72-65 in Round 2 of the Division 1 Youth League Men’s competition. Joel Klein top scored for the Panthers with 22 points.

Penrith will look for their first win of the year when they take on the Blacktown Storm in Round 3.

e’s six years older, six years wiser and most definitely sick of his back surgeon’s office.

But through the last half a dozen injury plagued summers, Penrith’s Pat Cummins never lost his drive.

After making his Test debut at 18 in November 2011, Cummins hasn’t worn the baggy green again – until now.

Last weekend the local prodigy was called up to replace the injured Mitchell Starc for the rest of Australia’s tour of India.

At the time the Weekender went to print, the now 23-year-old was in a prime position to return to the Test arena.

With the injuries that have plagued him now in the past, Cummins is resuming a Test career that promised so much.

“In selecting Pat, we were looking for a strike bowling replacement option,” selection panel Chair, Trevor Hohns said.

“Pat has impressed in his return to cricket this summer with consistent performances in his ODI, T20 International and Big Bash matches.”
