All roads lead to west’s new airport Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull drops by to get work started on upgrades to congested roads EMILY NEWTON

rime Minister Malcolm Turnbull visited Orchard Hills on Monday to mark the next stage of The Northern Road upgrade.

His visit reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to jobs in western Sydney as he turned the sod to begin the next phase of the $3.6 billion 10-year Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan.

“This infrastructure development, together with the Western Sydney Airport which we are going to build, is going to add tens of thousands of jobs to western Sydney,” Mr Turnbull said.

“Australians living in western Sydney have had to commute to jobs in Parramatta or further afield in the CBD itself.

“It is vitally important that sources of economic growth and activity are developed here.”

Mr Turnbull was joined by Treasurer Scott Morrison and Minister for Urban Infrastructure Paul Fletcher, along with State Member for Hume Angus Taylor and Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies.

The next stage will see upgrades along 4km of road from Glenmore Park extending to Jamison Road in South Penrith, an

11km section south of The Northern Road and Peter Brock Drive at Oran Park, and a 4km section of Bringelly Road.

Mr Fletcher said the Federal Government is working closely with the NSW State Government to ensure that the Western Sydney Airport will have efficient connectivity to the rest of Sydney in place before the airport becomes operational in 2026.

“The road upgrades are happening now, and the upgrades on The Northern Road will be open by 2020,” he said.

“In some sections near Penrith they will be as wide as four lanes in each direction.”

While there remains community concern about a lack of curfew for the new airport, the Government is pushing its jobs, infrastructure and productivity message, choosing to put any curfew talk on the backburner.

Ms Davies said she is “thrilled” that the Government is finally paying attention to the local community.

“This is the reason that I got in to politics in the first place, it was to be a part of a team to make a tangible difference out here in western Sydney,” she said.

“My community has said to me over and over again that they have been longing for Governments to actually notice western Sydney.”

n a recent episode of the ABC’s ‘Q&A’, a visiting US academic declared that you’re more likely to be killed by a falling refrigerator than a terrorist attack.

Just hours after he made that claim about dangerous whitegoods, 22 innocent people were killed when Salman Ramadan Abedi blew himself up at Manchester Arena in the UK. Just as you wouldn’t expect to be killed by a falling fridge, you wouldn’t expect your night out at an Ariana Grande concert to end like this.

One of the big problems we face in response to terrorism is turning on each other.

As former Prime Minister Tony Abbott said this week, too often we consider Islamophobia almost as big a problem as Islamic terrorism itself.

That often means that our politicians mince their words, fearful of being labelled racist or ignorant.

Journalists, commentators and members of the public also face a difficult path, branded racist if they point out some harsh realities or leftie bleeding hearts if they sympathise with the Muslim community so often tarnished by the actions of radical others.

Nobody is stupid enough to believe that all Muslims are terrorists (at least, nobody should be stupid enough).

But the old line ‘all terrorists are Muslims’ isn’t true either.

Very far from it, in fact.

But in our response to the devastation and fear that terrorism brings to our world, we do need to face some difficult truths.

We should not be afraid to use the

terms ‘Islam’ and ‘terrorism’ in the same sentence, because like it or not, there’s a pretty serious link there.

At the same time, we need greater education about where this terrorism comes from, why it happens, and we need facts without bias.

Too many people form their views based on the opinions of people like Andrew Bolt and Waleed Aly. Both with polar opposite views, both with flaws in their arguments.

It is the easy way out to blame Muslims for terrorism.

Easy because we’re not willing to do the research that may provide the answers we desperately seek.

Easy because I’m not quite sure that the media organisations covering these terror attacks, and as a result informing the public, quite have a grasp of what they’re dealing with.

And I’m certainly not saying I do. In fact

I’ll put my hand up and say I’m pretty uneducated when it comes to the cold, hard facts about “why” when it comes to terrorism and what motivates warped individuals to inflict such catastrophic pain on others.

I know a few things, however.

I know that I feel desperately sorry for people from a Muslim background who are pointed at, spoken about and looked down at for no reason.

Domestic violence statistics in this country are awful but we wouldn’t look at every bloke walking down the street and suspect that he hits his wife.

I know that protests like the one we saw in Penrith a few weeks ago are terribly unhelpful and create nothing but hatred and a split within our society.

And I know that we need our leaders to stand up, say what they need to say and tackle this head on.

We are far better tackling this together than divided.

For the last five or so years, I’ve worked with a bloke who is Muslim.

This is not a “some of my best friends are Muslim, but...” moment, however I spoke to him on Tuesday about how he feels when he wakes up in the morning and hears about another terrorist attack linked to Muslims and Islam.

Like all of us, he mourns for those who have died.

But he also fears for what kind of day he’s going to have. Who will look down on him, make assumptions about him, or worse still pick on his kids at school.

This is just one bloody awful mess.

But with more education, a little more understanding and a pledge to beat this together, surely we’ll get somewhere.

How 73-year-old Alan foiled a brazen robbery ALENA HIGGINS

hen his mate Murray Welsh was terrorised by a machetewielding bandit trying to rob his liquor store two years ago, 73-year-old Alan McNally not only foiled the hold-up but saved his friend’s life.

The men, who have remained close pals, caught up again this week after justice was finally served, with the culprit being sentenced to a minimum two-and-a-half years behind bars.

Mr Welsh, 53, said he doesn’t know what would have happened if Mr McNally had not rushed to his aid and tackled the man to the ground. “I was pretty much backed up and couldn’t back up any further,� he said.

In a brazen daylight robbery attempt, ‘ice’ addict Trevor Thomas Elmes and a co-offender entered the Little Bottler on Day Street, Colyton, at about 1.20pm on May 7, 2015 and demanded money from the till.

Mr McNally, an “unofficial employee�, said he was watching the pair on the monitor from out the back, but assumed Mr Welsh had made a sale when they approached the counter and went back to what he was doing.

The next thing he heard was Mr Welsh calling out his name. “I came walking out and I just saw a man waving – I didn’t know if it was a machete or knife – just waving it at him and I knew I had to do something so I just rushed in and grabbed him,� he said. “I got him around the neck and just dragged him to the ground and that’s when he dropped the machete. “The next thing I knew Murray was pulling me off the back of him and I was wondering what was going on because I thought I should be getting stuck into him. Then he jumped up and ran out of the shop.�

Despite his valiant efforts, Mr McNally insisted he is no hero. “I was just trying to help a mate,� he said.

He said he thought the sentence was sufficient, but it would have been a different story if they had been seriously hurt in the robbery. “The fact is he didn’t get anything except a little box of alcohol, but that was very minor compared to what we were going to have happen,� he said.

suspected home-grown terrorist living in Colyton has been sentenced to 18 months jail after making a number of disturbing and violent threats online.

Ciaron Patrick Mcgee, 38, was collared by the Joint Counter Terrorism Team at his Desborough Road home in February after his social media commentary escalated and became increasingly erratic.

The self-confessed ISIS sympathiser, who threatened to slit Pauline Hanson’s throat on national TV and asked Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to deport him to Syria so he could fight with the terror organisation, said he posted the messages and tweets out of “frustration” and to raise awareness of what was happening in Syria and Iraq as well as Australia’s “unjust” asylum seeker policy.

His lawyer, Silvia Genovese, told Penrith Local Court last Friday he had no intention of following through with his threats.

Court documents reveal the day after tweeting @AusBorderForce stating he was planning an attack on Australian soil, Mcgee emailed the Australian Federal Police telling them he just “had the s**ts”.

“As if I’m going to commit a terrorist attack,” he wrote.

t’s the second largest city in the Penrith LGA, but it hasn’t seen a Council meeting hosted there in more than a decade.

But St Marys may soon be a destination for Council meetings, with one local Councillor coming into bat for the satellite city, calling on Council to put it on the map when the time comes to finalise its 2018 meeting schedule.

Councillor Bernard Bratusa said while the move had to be “feasibly and financially responsible”, he was “kicking the

tyres” to see if meetings could be held there on a more permanent basis.

“They are an important part of the community,” he said.

“I’d like to see one a quarter at least. I don’t think it’s unreasonable.”

He said Council officers are already in the process of compiling a report back to Councillors offering suggested venues and what meetings could and couldn’t be taken off site.

Mcgee, a daily ‘ice’ user and diagnosed schizophrenic, blamed online propaganda, drug use and isolation for his behaviour.

The court heard at the time of the offences, Mcgee seldom left his home except to take his 73-year-old disabled mother to appointments, and would watch videos all day and get “angry with the state of the world”.

The Federal prosecutor told the Court the Commonwealth DPP held concerns about the 38-year-old’s mental stability, noting he stopped taking his medication when he was not forced to.

She said while there was no evidence Mcgee directly contacted Islamic State, he did hashtag them in one post.

Mcgee, who pleaded guilty to two counts of ‘using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend’, was granted police bail in December 2016 with a strict condition not to use the Internet.

However, the National Security Hotline was alerted to fresh activity on his Facebook page on January 28 and 29, prompting his second arrest and remand.

He is eligible for release on January 31, 2018, but is expected to appeal.

Healthy competition that could save a life EMILY NEWTON

lood has been spilled between St Marys and Penrith Local Area Commands as they battle it out in the 2017 Emergency Services Blood Challenge.

The life saving blood drive aims to help combat the traditional drop-off in blood donor numbers each winter while, at the same time, challenging groups to vie for the highest blood count.

St Marys commander Superintendent Greg Peters said the drive was slow initially but has ramped up in recent years.

“It’s become quite healthy, especially with commanders,” he laughed.

“When they got this going, I had been doing plasma, when the commanders realised they could get more donations with plasma than whole blood, they changed to plasma.”

Penrith commander Superintendent Brett McFadden chuckled at his comment, saying he was beginning the drive by donating plasma.

But between the banter, there is a serious message our emergency services men and women are pushing.

“When we were doing the drive last year, it was on the back of Sergeant Luke

Warburton getting shot,” Superintendent McFadden said “I think it brings it home because he was perilously close to dying in that incident that occurred up at Nepean Hospital.

“It reminds us of the dangers of the work we do.”

Blood Service spokesperson Ronny Maroun said more than 900 new donors were needed across western Sydney this winter, with many regular donors knocked out by the cold and flu season.

“We are hoping that through the Emergency Services Challenge and the example of these amazing men and women, who save lives on a regular basis through their profession, that more people will be encouraged to donate blood to give others a second chance at life,” he said.

While friendly competition helps get the blood flowing, it’s not about which command wins or who loses, because ultimately the community wins.

“The thing that matters is how many lives we save from all of the donations, that’s what it’s about,” Superintendent Peters said.

Nationally, the competing groups will aim to make 8,500 donations, potentially saving 25,000 lives.

Islamic school proposed for Henry Street won’t go ahead ALENA HIGGINS

enrith will maintain its status quo as a city with no Islamic schools after Council formally rejected a Development Application (DA) for an independent school at 57 Henry Street.

Late last month, Council requested the applicant, Irfan College of Cecil Park, withdraw its application citing serious site constraints.

But it was not until June 1 that the DA was finally determined and refused under delegated authority.

Mayor John Thain said the DA, which included the fit out and use of existing buildings at the former Penrith Public School site, failed to address a number of legislative requirements.

“This application was found to be noncompliant in a number of areas and has been refused,” he said in a statement.

“Council will continue to ensure that potential developments meet statutory requirements and address any future undesirable impacts they would have on our city.”

Cr Thain said the community can expect to see “much more” development in Penrith as western Sydney continues to grow.

“This will be required to create jobs and transport infrastructure, and address

Meanwhile, Councillor Marcus Cornish has requested Councillors be briefed on the Local Environmental Plan (LEP) and Development Control Plans (DEP) for Penrith and St Marys’ Town Centres with a view to excluding all new places of worship and secondary schools.

“That should be a no-brainer because it doesn’t sit with Council’s view of the CBD of either area,” Cr Cornish said.

He said the Henry Street site was more suited to become part of a legal precinct, given its close proximity to Penrith Court House.

It is unknown if the applicant will look to establish another school in the Penrith LGA in the near future.

The Weekender again reached out to the school’s principal for comment, but he did not respond by deadline.

If approved, it was expected the kindergarten to Year 12 school would initially have 50 to 120 enrolments, swelling to 300 students by the end of 2021.

Fond farewell to a dedicated local cop After 30 years servicing western Sydney, John McGee is looking forward to an active retirement “I’m actually quite humbled by the turnout,” he said.

“I’ve just been an LAC Detective, I haven’t done anything newsworthy.

“I just worked hard, and I’m very humbled that people recognised what I did.”

Detective Senior Sergeant McGee’s advice to young officers is to enjoy what you’re doing and speak out about your experiences.

“The big thing with us is to talk to your family, talk to people about what’s happening,” he said.

“Don’t try and hide it all in.”

He is looking forward to enjoying his retirement by spending time with his granddaughter, travelling and playing music.

ast week Detective Senior Sergeant John McGee walked out of the station where he first began his policing career almost 30 years ago one final time.

Having spent half his life as a police officer, Detective Senior Sergeant McGee has begun his retirement after proudly serving western Sydney over the past three decades.

“I’ve loved my whole time here, but I don’t know if I would do it all again,” he laughed.

“The biggest thing that I gather out of it is watching the young people come through, especially as detectives, that I’ve had a hand in their progress.

“That’s what this job is about, it’s the people you work with.

“That’s the memories you have, not the jobs you do or anything like that, just the people you work with and how you work together.”

With dreams of being a police officer since he was 19-years-old, it was not until Detective Senior Sergeant McGee was 30 that he joined the force, due to previous height restrictions.

Mother tells court she’ll seek help for alcohol issues

The woman busted high-range drink driving with four kids in her car at Cranebrook earlier his year has sought another adjournment – this time to enter alcohol rehabilitation.

The woman, 33, faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday, with her Legal Aid lawyer telling the court she wished to be admitted to detox at Nepean Hospital, which was the “precursor” to entering a three to six month program at Phoebe House, Arncliffe.

He said the mother-of-six, who was also found to have left two younger children, aged two and four, unsupervised at her home, is now aware of her drinking issues and is “making attempts to address her problems”.

“There’s a chance of jail at the end of this and she’s aware of that,” he said.

He admitted it would “drag the matter out” but said it would be similar to the self-imposed Merit program, often utilised by drug addicts to help kick their habit and also try to soften their ultimate sentence.

Police stopped a white Toyota along Goldmark Crescent about 3.45pm on March 8 and found four children inside the vehicle, aged between six and 10.

The woman underwent a breath test, returning a reading of 0.212 and was subsequently arrested and granted conditional bail.

Magistrate Carl Milovanovich said he “would probably not oppose” an adjournment for such a lengthy period, but would require proof of admission once she had completed the seven-day detox.

On the way out, one of the accused’s supporters tried to block an awaiting cameraman, waving a book in front of his lens as they tried to dash away.

She is due to face court again on June 15.

Man jailed after unsavoury incidents involving women

A Penrith man who exposed himself to a

teenager on a train and stalked a woman in the female toilet block of a local library will spend just one more week behind bars before he is eligible for release.

Brett Lee Cassels, 38, faced Penrith Local Court for sentence last Friday charged with ‘act of indecency’, ‘wilful and obscene exposure’ and ‘stalk and intimidate intending to cause fear or physical or mental harm’.

It was while travelling on a Redfern train bound for Richmond on November 7, 2016 that Cassels exposed himself to the teen, who is now fearful of travelling on public transport.

The teenager told police Cassels exposed his genitals and touched himself while staring at her.

Just months later, the Castlereagh resident was at it again, this time intimidating a female at Penrith Library.

Cassels honed in on the woman inside the library. Asking to sit next to her, he began talking until the victim texted a friend asking her to phone her and used the call as an excuse to leave.

When he saw the victim enter the female toilets on her way out, he followed a short time later, standing immediately in front of her cubicle, court documents reveal.

He told police he entered the female toilets by mistake because he was “busting” after suffering from a bout of diarrhoea.

However he was forced to admit he passed both the male and disabled toilets to get to the female toilets.

Court documents reveal Cassels, who receives a disability pension, previously told police he “can’t help” from masturbating in public.

“I’ve been good lately but this is just a small hiccup,” he said, according to agreed facts, adding he “never hurt anyone”.

He admitted he thought about touching himself at the toilet basin, but then thought better of it.

He was sentenced to nine months jail with a non parole period of four months.

With time already served, he will be eligible for release on June 17.

Man gets violent when drug deal goes bad

A man who punched an associate in the face in a drug deal gone wrong has been handed a 16-month jail sentence.

Reggie Winters appeared before Penrith Local Court via video link last Thursday charged with ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’.

The court heard the 23-year-old had tried to purchase cannabis off his supplier, but when he handed over his money the man refused to give him the drug, saying he owed him money.

After punching him in the face, the victim’s son intervened, coming at Mr Winters with a knife until he fled the scene.

His lawyer told the court his client, who is currently serving a two-year non-parole sentence, had spent three quarters of his adulthood in jail.

He said he had been exposed to significant domestic violence from the age of four and had turned to drugs and alcohol between the ages of 13 and 14.

But Magistrate Brian Van Zuylen declined to craft a sentence that would not interfere with his current release date.

“The court’s view is that there must be some extension given the seriousness of it,” he said before adding an additional two months.

He is eligible for release on parole on October 7, 2017.

Emu Plains man hit with $400 fine for driving without licence

Corey Alan Rogerson has been hit with a $400 fine for driving unlicenced.

The 21-year-old faced Penrith Local Court to be sentenced last Thursday.

Magistrate Carl Milovanovich told the Emu Plains local he should have known that he needed to re-apply for his licence before driving again when it was cancelled at court.

“You’ve been before the court for two serious driving offences before,” Magistrate Milovanovich said.

Good driving record helps man escape conviction

Daniel Christopher Swirski has been given a good behaviour bond after pleading guilty to driving with an illicit drug present in his blood.

The 43-year-old appeared before Penrith Local Court last Thursday to be sentenced for the offence.

The court heard the father-of-two had been pulled over the day after he had shared “a joint with a friend” and was unaware the drug was still in his system.

His lawyer submitted he was not a drug user, providing a urinalysis test to the court as proof, adding his client was extremely embarrassed by the misdemeanour.

Magistrate Carl Milovanovich said he was not being charged with driving under the affects of cannabis, and noted he was caught via random drug test and it wasn’t his manner of driving that brought him under notice.

“Look, I can see you’ve been driving for about 26 years and only have four infringements... you have a good driving record,” he said.

“I think a conviction is probably too harsh a penalty.”

His was discharged on the condition that he enter a 12-month good behaviour bond.

“You only get this once – learn from your mistakes,” he warned.

Man to seek legal advice after driving unlicenced

Aiden Kumar has had his matter adjourned in order to seek legal advice.

Mr Kumar fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with driving without a licence.

Magistrate Carl Milovanovich said it appeared this wasn’t his first offence of this kind.

Colyton: Learner driver hit with multiple charges

A 19-year-old male learner driver from Minchinbury was caught driving unaccompanied in Colyton last Friday (June 2).

At about 10.20pm, police were patrolling Astwood Street when they sighted a vehicle and stopped it.

Following a conversation with the driver, police asked him to produce his driver’s licence. He produced his Class L Learner’s Permit.

Police allege there was no licenced driver with him at the time, and also allege that there were two passengers in the rear tray of the vehicle.

The man was charged with ‘Learner not accompanied by driver/police officer/ tester’, ‘Drive with passenger in/on part of vehicle not permitted’ and ‘Learner driver not display “L” plates as required’.

He will appear at Penrith Local Court on Monday, July 17.

St Marys: Man charged after cannabis plants seized

15 cannabis plants were seized from an address in Chapel Street, St Marys last week.

On Wednesday, May 31 police were called to the address around 9pm where they spoke to a 48-year-old man.

It is alleged that police located a bag of cannabis on a table at the location.

They then walked to the rear yard of the location where they located small cannabis plants growing.

The man spoke to police in relation to the plants, and was subsequently charged with ‘Possess prohibited drug’, two counts of ‘Cultivate prohibited plant’ and ‘Possess prohibited plant’.

He will appear in court later this month.

Luddenham: Driver was drinking before car accident

A man has been charged with ‘Drive with high range PCA’ after a motor vehicle accident last week.

At 1.30am on Saturday, June 3 police were called to Park Road, Luddenham due to a motor vehicle accident.

The driver, a 22-year-old Mulgoa man, was subjected to a roadside breath test, where he returned a positive sample.

He was taken to St Marys Police Station where he underwent a breath analysis that returned a positive reading of 0.184.

He was subsequently charged, had his licence suspended on the spot and will appear at Penrith Local Court on Monday, July 3.

Penrith: Police seize items after fire at unoccupied house

A fire that erupted at a residence on Haynes Street, Penrith during the early hours of Sunday is currently under investigation.

At 1.10am on June 4 fire and police services attended the house fire that began at the rear of the premises.

A neighbour contacted the fire brigade after they noticed the fire, as the property was not occupied at the time of the incident.

The brigade was forced to remove part of a wall and cladding in order to fully extinguish the fire.

The fire is being treated as suspicious and is being investigated by detectives.

Following an examination of the property, police noticed a number of suspicious items that have also been seized for further examination.

South Penrith: Police find knife on man going through bin

At about 11.50pm on Saturday, June 3 police officers were patrolling Smith Street in South Penrith.

An officer saw a 43-year-old male rummaging through a charity bin.

He was stopped and spoken to by police, where he admitted that he had something on him that he shouldn’t have.

Following a search, police found the man to be in possession of a 22cm kitchen knife.

Helping first home buyers The ongoing housing affordability crisis in Sydney and across the State has reached fever pitch lately triggering measures to be put in the Federal Budget and more recently sweeping changes to rules in the State Budget to make it easier for first home buyers to get into the property market.

In the recent Federal Budget, the Treasurer announced changes to superannuation laws to enable first home buyers to begin saving for a house deposit within superannuation at concessional tax rates.

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian just announced a range of even more significant changes to first home buyers in New South Wales.

First home buyers will now be eligible for an exemption on stamp duty on purchases of new and existing properties up to a value of $650,000. Concessions will be available on stamp duty on houses between $650,000 and $800,000.

This will represent a saving of up to $30,000 for some people.

In addition to this, regulation regarding foreign investment has been tightened to make it more expensive for foreigners to purchase real estate in New South Wales. The rationale is that if we see a softening in the investment market, this would put downward pres-

sure on demand, slowing the growth of property prices in the State.

One of the other major costs that first home buyers need to consider however, is the cost of loan mortgage insurance if they do not have up to 20 per cent of the purchase price of their property in savings.

Depending on which bank you are with, if you have less than 20 per cent as a deposit for a property, meaning that loan to value ratio is at 80 per cent or higher, you may have to pay loan mortgage insurance on top of your stamp duty and the purchase price to secure your loan. In some cases this can be as much as $20,000.

APRA, the body in charge of regulating the banks and the way in which they lend money, has been making a number of changes in recent years to things like LBRs and the manner in which lenders are allowed to lend money in response to growing property prices to ensure that we do not see a mortgage bubble in the State.

It will be interesting to see if the announcement regarding stamp duty exemption for first home buyers results in an increase in supply to match demand putting downward pressure on prices, or if it has the opposite effect by increasing demand in a market with already low supply.

Truckies may get new rest area thanks to Crameri’s insistence ALENA HIGGINS

ruck drivers locked out of the unofficial rest area on The Northern Road may soon have an alternative pit-stop, with Council investigating the possibility of providing one itself.

Councillor Kevin Crameri was dismayed to find the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) had installed gates on the heavy vehicle inspection bay late last year, preventing truckies from pulling over to check their loads or take mandatory breaks.

Following his insistence, Council will look at providing additional road base at the entrance or exit of the lay-by area, located between Wentworth Road and Bradley Street, after first clarifying its ability to do work on a State road verge.

Narellan, adding the area had been used as a crucial rest site by truck drivers and families for at least 70 years.

“The RMS is supposed to be looking after the safety of truck drivers,” he said during Council’s last Ordinary Meeting.

An RMS spokeswoman told the Weekender back in April that the barriers were fixed to the entrance and exit points to ensure the site could be used for planned enforcement activities.

Councillor Greg Davies said they should do as much as possible to keep roads safe, while Councillor Marcus Cornish said having limited places for truck drivers to stop was a “major problem”.

“Opposite St Marys Leagues Club they used to be able to stop there, but they can’t anymore,” he said.

Cr Crameri has also asked Council to ensure the RMS incorporate a truck lay-by area into future upgrade designs of The Northern Road.

local mum has lost her partner and been left to raise her three sons alone following a shock car accident last week.

Showing the heart and spirit of Penrith, the community is coming together in support of Katie Gilbert, who now faces an even more difficult future.

The Weekender first spoke to Ms Gilbert earlier this year about the daily struggles of her sons, all of whom have autism.

Described as a kind and beautiful mother in the community, people across Penrith and beyond, including mum Rose Zammit, have united to help her family. “We made a Facebook page and we’re in shock at how much women in the area have jumped on board to help,� Ms Zammit said. “It’s pretty incredible, we’re just blown away with the community coming together like this.�

Mothers have offered to help with simple tasks like laundry, cooking and haircuts to bigger things like holding fundraisers or volunteering skilled labour.

Last year The Creative Fringe ran a denim challenge out of their co-working space.

The challenge was to turn old denim skirts that were donated to The Creative Fringe into different items that were then put up for auction on eBay. “We were so impressed with the incredible talent and creativity that everyone demonstrated. From teddy bears to bags, aprons, dresses and blankets, we were able to raise nearly $400,� explained Owner and Creative Director Debbie O’Connor.

The money was donated to First Seeds Fund who provide assistance to women and children in western Sydney.

This year the team at The Creative Fringe plan on bringing some warmth to our homeless community in Penrith.

The ‘Think Outside the Square Knitting Challenge’ encourages anyone who can or who wants to learn to knit, to get stitching a simple 20x20cm square.

The squares will need to be handed into The Creative Fringe by June 30 where Ms O’Connor and her happy helpers will sew the squares together to make blankets.

The blankets will be donated to Mama Lana’s Community Foundation for them to hand out to their patrons.

Little Jackson’s mighty challenge Family faces long medical journey after baby is born with fingers and toes fused together EMILY NEWTON

hen baby Jackson was born eight weeks early, his parents were surprised enough.

When they realised he was born with his fingers and toes fused together, his mother Alison Wasson was frightened.

Hard to detect, Amniotic Band Syndrome (ABS) occurs in just over two in every 10,000 births according to a 1993 Australian study.

“When they’re inside the womb, there are little fibres that come off the amniotic sac,” Ms Wasson, from South Penrith, said.

“They get wrapped around the limbs, and that stunts the growth. In his case his fingers are stuck and fused together.”

While in many pregnancies ABS is detected in scans during pregnancy, it was unfortunately not picked up in Jackson’s case.

“It should be something that comes up, but we didn’t know about it before he was born,” Ms Wasson said.

“It was quite frightening. I was in the hospital for the first week, and then he was in the hospital for another three and a half weeks.”

any other baby would, his mother said the impact this will have on young Jackson’s life is yet to be determined.

“As he grows, he’s going to have to have more and more done to his fingers and his toes to help him when he develops and grows,” she said.

“Where they are fused together he’s even missing bones and things, I even think he is missing a finger on one hand.”

Medical advice is still being sought and there’s a number of options to consider.

“Doctors have mentioned doing surgery to separate, they’ve mentioned prosthetics and physiotherapy,” Ms Wasson said.

ABS is more commonly linked to cleft palate or a club foot, making Jackson’s case even more rare with many doctors at the hospital unaware of his condition.

“A few doctors did know about it, but I think that most didn’t,” Ms Wasson said.

The family are taking each day as it comes, and are just happy to be at home with Jackson after being separated for the first few weeks of his life.

The family have created a GoFundMe page for future medical expenses that Jackson is likely to encounter in the years ahead.

Our local MPs, Stuart Ayres and Tanya Davies, are celebrating another Sydney-bound entry and exit point to the M4 (Weekender June 2). Considering the growth in western Sydney and the expectation that more people will need to travel to Penrith, it surprises me that the State Government continues to ignore the need for westbound entry onto the M4. The result is seen daily on local roads in suburbs like St Clair due to the lack of foresight with the construction of Erskine Park Road.

I don’t see it as an oasis because it is much too small to cater for more than a handful of people. The idea of spending $3 million on it is ridiculous. Probably only the customers of the shops who would be doing handstands at their great good fortune at the expense of others.

Finding Homes for Heroes: Project hits the $1 million mark

he Homes for Heroes project has reached the fundraising milestone of $1 million after a recent fundraiser by Penrith RSL Club helped push them over the line.

The Penrith RSL fundraiser raised over $15,000, to help the young returned soldiers who have found themselves homeless due to PTSD or other combat illnesses.

Penrith MP Stuart Ayres attended the event and expressed his support of the program in the community.

“People often don’t realise that many of these veterans are young men and women, in their 20s and 30s, who served in Iraq, Afghanistan or disaster relief in the Pacific and now require support, appropriate treatment and rehabilitation to assist in assimilating back into everyday society and to live fulfilling lives,” he said.

The Homes for Heroes initiative helps returned soldiers through a rehabilitation service that provides accommodation, support, counselling and opportunities to re-enter the community.

How a tragedy drove Murray Scanlan to look out for others

local hero, Murray Scanlan has been recognised for his commitment and outstanding work as a NSW Ambulance educator across the Penrith and Blue Mountains region.

Listed as a finalist for the 2017 Rotary NSW Emergency Service Community Awards, Mr Scanlan covers the whole of western Sydney as he looks after the welfare of other ambulance officers.

“I go around to the stations looking after the officers’ wellbeing and making sure they’re on track with their studies,” he said.

“I spend my time teaching and mentoring and facilitating officers either in a classroom or actually in an ambulance with them.”

An intensive care paramedic for 25 years, and working with NSW Ambulance for 30, there is a passion that drives Mr Scanlan’s desire to care for the wellbeing of others.

Previously an SES road rescue volunteer, he received the call out that every volunteer fears, an incident involving his wife that changed his life.

It’s a story you only hear about, something almost impossible to imagine happening.

“I attended the accident in which she got killed,” he said.

“I wasn’t going to stand by and be useless, and so I went out and joined the ambulance.

“Since that day, I’ve gone out to do exactly what I set out to do.”

Following the incident he suffered from PTSD, but has dedicated his life to mentoring other paramedics and volunteers.

With 400 on road officers in the area, Mr Scanlan makes sure he sees them all.

“If I don’t see them, then they turn around and slip through the framework and might not be clinically safe,” he said.

Minister for Emergency Services Troy Grant said the awards celebrate the outstanding contribution of emergency services workers in our communities.

“We should never take for granted the work our emergency services staff and volunteers do and it is important to acknowledge the unsung heroes who have gone above and beyond,” Mr Grant said.

The winners will be announced on August 4 at a special presentation dinner.

This new initiative will work to improve the way health services are promoted, delivered and used by people in North St Marys.

The café targets people who are over 50, in particular those who care for family members, and members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Because these groups have much lower rates of regular health checks, and have a higher risk of chronic illness.

With the Village Café, Council wants to connect with people in this community who don’t access health checks and who may have gaps in their understanding of what good health and

group of local women has come together to create 1000 birthing kits to help women give birth more safely in developing countries.

Zonta Club of Nepean Valley President, Helen Grimson, said that as an international, volunteer organisation, their aim is to advocate for improvements to the status of women worldwide.

“The idea of the kits is to provide a clean, safe birthing environment for women who are giving birth in developing countries,” she said.

“The last lot of our birthing kits went to the Republic of Congo.”

Specifically designed to save the lives of women and their children who are at risk giving birth, the kits cost $3 to make and are funded by the Zonta Club.

With over 30 people on hand to help, Penrith Councillor Karen McKeown and Lindsay MP Emma Husar also volunteered their time for the cause.

“One of the privileges of my job is getting to work alongside amazing people like the women of Zonta Nepean,” Ms Husar said.

“Congratulations to everyone involved in assembling 1000 kits in just one day.”

Irene Meyers celebrated her 100th birthday this week Ms Meyers and her husband had four children – Bob, Garry, Kaye and Carol.

They also had 10 grandchildren and 15 surviving great grandchildren.

“She’s just a really good mum,” Ms Simpson said.

“She always loved a good joke and loved having fun.”

nly a week younger than John F Kennedy, Penrith’s Irene Meyers celebrated her 100th birthday milestone on Monday.

Having lived in the area since 1956, Ms Meyers saw her fair share of development in Penrith as she lived an active and playful life.

Her daughter Kaye Simpson recounted some of the things that made her mother an “amazing lady”.

“She was one of the founding members of Kingswood Bowling Club, where she is now a lifetime member,” Ms Simpson said.

“Her and dad had an old time dance band together, they used to play for weddings, engagements and parties.

“Mum played the piano and dad played the drums.”

Moving to the area from Wagga, Ms Meyers is the last surviving member of her immediate family, and the only one to reach 100.

“She always led a really active life, she was a non-smoker and she enjoyed a little glass of sherry or port occasionally,” Ms Simpson said.

“She was a great cook, a very good cake maker. She would just try her hand at everything.”

Compulsory superannuation contributions force most of us to save for our retirement; however, one group that this does not apply to is the self-employed.

Business owners are at risk of a sub-standard retirement as many neglect to save for their own retirement.

s business owners, there can be a great deal of stress we place on ourselves to succeed. We often make difficult decisions by ourselves and can have the weight of responsibility on our shoulders, not only for operational considerations, but also employment security for staff. We may be sleep-deprived and working long hours. All those factors combined can result in business owners who aren’t paying enough attention to their own mental health and general wellbeing.

For those who have started their business from scratch, our identity can also be strongly linked to our start-ups (e.g. Michelle = Shel Design). Although employees can of course experience a great deal of stress in their workplace, it is far more difficult for a business owner to ‘walk away’ from what they’ve created. And most of us are not seeking to do that anyway! But as our business goes through troughs and peaks, it is inevitable that we will also follow that same pattern. This adds another layer of stress, as there is far more than finances at stake if your business doesn’t

succeed: if your business fails, YOU fail.

At least, that is how it feels!

It is important, then, to be aware of your emotions and enlist techniques to manage your mental health. It doesn’t mean you won’t still experience highs and lows, or be personally affected by what happens in your business. But it will help you to experience less unhelpful emotions, give you more optimism, have clearer thought processes and result in more creativity. Having your mental health in check will bring you to a more stable equilibrium and reduce the amount of ‘emotional swinging’ that you do.

This can be as simple as making sure you share your feelings and concerns with someone who will understand what you are going through. It is why it is vital to be connected to your business community in order to build relationships that can provide a listening ear and a sounding board. Or alternatively, it may be a business coach you enlist to help you work through the phases and seasons of your business, ensuring that you look after yourself in the process.

earning is a lifelong process, and I constantly take up opportunities to learn new things, meet new people and push my comfort zone. Although I invest in some learning, like many small business owners, I take up and offer free events as well.

Running your own events As an adjunct to your business, or to demonstrate your expertise to prospective and current customers, consider holding events. You can start on a very small local or online scale, and spread over time. For instance, a cake maker could offer classes in drip cake decorating. A business advisor may speak about marketing, or other business issues.

Conducting physical events at low cost Many places offer venues for low or no cost, in exchange for exposure and a few coffees. Schedule a small room or space the first time, but eventually you may need a larger space. Alternatively offer to speak at an existing networking or industry event, or your own premises.

Conduct online events You can run events on Facebook.

Schedule an event and then post in the event the start time. Create a special challenge or training for a short period, often in a closed group with videos. Outside Facebook, webinars can be conducted affordably.

Should you charge?

Yes for physical events – even a nominal fee that may cover costs such as a coffee for participants. Why not free? Because even a token entry fee commits the person. No show rates on free events are 30-70 per cent, so always oversubscribe a free event. Paid events typically have 0-20 per cent no show rate.

Event etiquette If you go to a free event expect there will be a sales pitch but, as a presenter, keep it minimal and relevant. If as an attendee you can no longer attend, let the host know. They may be able to offer your space to the waitlist, and adjust catering/ room size to make for a better event.

Essentially treat others as you wish to be treated.

to be invited to the launch of Fox League commentator Andrew Voss’ new book on Monday night in Pyrmont. Stuff You May Have Missed is well worth a read, and has been endorsed by Panthers boss Phil Gould. The launch was attended by a host of rugby league personalities including NRL CEO Todd Greenberg, top referee Matt Cecchin, league legends Steve Roach, John Gibbs and Mark Gasnier, and a host of Vossy’s fellow media personalities. Interestingly, Vossy revealed during the night that he’s yet to be re-signed

by Fox Sports for next year. As one of the game’s best commentators, surely a new deal will be struck by the end of the season. Stuff You May Have Missed is out now in all good (and bad) book stores.

» Still on Vossy, he revealed at Mon-

day night’s launch that his passion for commentary was partly inspired by the famous 2KA rugby league team, which serviced the Blue Mountains and Penrith for many decades. The late, great Frank Ley proved an inspiration for a determined Vossy, who would go on to become one of the game’s most respected callers.

» Eagle-eyed fans may have noticed a

new sponsor pop up on Penrith’s shorts last weekend. The Glad Group, a property services company, has joined the Panthers as a major corporate partner. I can also reveal that Glad Group will soon take over the naming rights of the Panthers Rugby League Academy, which will officially be called the Glad Group Rugby League Academy. It’s an important partnership as the Academy is an expensive facility to maintain and will continue to be into the future.

» Josh Mansour made a successful return from injury last weekend and it’s been a pretty incredible journey back to the NRL for the former Origin star, with plenty of highs and lows along the way. Journalist Zac Bailey has been following Sauce’s story ever since he suffered the heartbreaking ACL injury while training with

the Kangaroos late last year, and has put together an incredible feature length story. You can expect to see it on Fox Sports over the weekend, but it’ll also soon be up on the official Panthers website. I hear that it’s pretty raw, inspiring stuff.

» Talking of Sauce, he experienced a

challenge far tougher than his injury recovery earlier this week – dealing with the Foxtel call centre. He gave them both barrels on Twitter.

» It’s understood Corey Harawira-Naera has agreed to a new deal with Penrith.

» Panthers players joined more than 250

children at the Reliance Bank Super Clinic at Bathurst Sportsground on Wednesday afternoon. It was part of a busy day for the playing group, which also participated in a meet and greet with fans at Bathurst Panthers on Wednesday night.

On Thursday, players visited a number of schools around Bathurst – making the match against Canberra on Saturday just part of what the club is doing in the region this week.

» The Pantherettes will also be heading

to Bathurst for Saturday’s game, and let’s hope they’ve all been given directions to the ground. I’m told the girls haven’t been provided with a bus this year and will have to make their own way to Carrington Park.

» Once the new-look Parramatta Stadium

is completed and upgrades to ANZ Stadium are finished, there will be plenty of pressure on clubs like Penrith to play one or two home games out of either venue.

The State Government is desperate for content to fill the venues to justify the huge spend. I’m told they won’t have much luck in Pantherland, with the club keen to continue playing 11 matches out of Pepper Stadium and one game each year in Bathurst. It’d have to be a mighty big financial incentive for the club’s Board to consider moving a match to a bigger stadium.

» Penrith’s 38-0 thrashing of Canterbury last Sunday attracted a pretty handy TV audience. An average audience of 207,000 tuned in on Fox League (making it the second most watched pay TV

efore a ball was kicked this season many would have expected this Round 14 clash between Penrith and Canberra to be a top four blockbuster.

Instead, both sides find themselves outside the top eight with the Panthers currently 10th and the Raiders a rung above on ninth, thanks to a marginally superior for and against.

While both sides have been a little disappointing this year, there’s no doubt that the Panthers have been the big improvers over the last month, winning their third straight game last weekend when they flattened Canterbury 38-0 at ANZ

Stadium. The Raiders meanwhile remain in patchy form but were unlucky not to escape Lottoland with two competition points last Sunday, going down to Manly in extra time.

Everything points to a tight contest at Carrington Park in Bathurst on Saturday evening, and with a 5.30pm kickoff will come chilly conditions – not that either side isn’t used to that.

While Canterbury have put together some good performances at times this season, there’s little doubt that they were poor last week and the Panthers will face a much tougher opponent in the Raiders.

Canberra’s backline is full of point scoring potential and the Panthers will have to watch the likes of Joseph Leilua, Jack Wighton, Jarrod Croker and in particular Jordan Rapana, who crossed for two tries in his side’s loss to Manly.

The Panthers will also have their hands

full with Canberra’s talented halves pairing of Blake Austin and Aidan Sezer, who on their day can tear opposition sides to shreds. It’ll be a big test for Matt Moylan and Nathan Cleary.

But the Panthers have plenty to offer in terms of points themselves.

Things really clicked for Anthony Griffin’s men last week and it was no surprise to see Josh Mansour playing such a big part in the performance.

He ran for over 200 metres and showed just how much the Panthers have missed his kick returns and enthusiasm over the first few months of the competition. He’ll play a key role against the Raiders, giving the forwards a break particularly towards the back end of each half.

Talking of the forwards, Penrith’s big men steam rolled Canterbury last weekend and will come up against a Canberra pack that has been dealt a couple of

significant blows with both Shannon Boyd and Dunamis Lui ruled out after picking up injuries against Manly.

While the flair and highlights will certainly come from the backs in this game, I’m expecting the forwards to determine the result, and the Panthers appear to have a slight edge. Trent Merrin has now reached full flight after a slow start to the season, while Reagan CampbellGillard looks like a man on a mission every time he runs the football. James Tamou is also improving, while Isaah Yeo appears to have unleashed the best version of himself this year and has probably been Penrith’s most consistent and dominant player.

I’d like to see Tyrone Peachey used a little earlier and there’s clearly some issues with Viliame Kikau given his limited game time, but a consistent week to week squad should really start to help Penrith.

Tip: Panthers by 8.

anthers legend and former Great Britain international Bill Ashurst is still a massive Penrith man at heart but admits, apart from the lucrative dollars, he wouldn’t want to play the game of rugby league today.

The now 69-year-old made a name for himself at Penrith in the mid 1970s following a decorated six-year career in Wigan.

While he only spent a relatively short amount of time at the Panthers, Ashurst won plenty of fans and is still regarded as one of the greatest English players to ever lace on a boot in Australia.

While Ashurst’s time at the foot of Mountains was cut short in 1977 after he walked out of the club in mysterious circumstances, he still remains a big fan.

Speaking exclusively with Extra Time in Penrith this week, Ashurst admitted while the club has changed remarkably over the years, his affection for the Panthers certainly hasn’t.

“Everything looks different but, at the end of the day, the Panthers are still the Panthers and I’ve always been a Panther and I always will be,” he said.

“I always say there are only two teams in my life – the Wigan Warriors and Penrith.”

During his four-week trip back to Australia, Ashurst managed to witness in the flesh two Penrith victories over the Bulldogs and Warriors as well as go on a private tour of Panthers Rugby League Academy.

“Brad Waugh took me around the Academy and I couldn’t believe what I saw, it was unbelievable,” Ashurst said.

“I remember our old sheds, buying our own boots and making our own way to the ground. Heck, I even smoked when I played, even at half-time!

Panthers legend Bill Ashurst has been visiting his old stomping ground “To be honest, I wouldn’t like the lifestyle the players have these days – there’s too much pressure and far too many mobile phones.”

Panthers Hall of Famer Grahame Moran once described Ashurst as the “most complete footballer”, as skilful as Andrew Johns. But the former centre/backrower and goal kicking sharpshooter admits he isn’t a fan of how the game is played today.

“It’s a different game to when we played… I don’t like the modern game,” Ashurst said.

“It’s all based on defence now, I was brought up on attack and scoring more

points than your opposition. I wouldn’t have liked to have played now except for the money, of course,” he joked.

In 2006, Ashurst received one of the greatest honours of his career when he was one of 17 players named in Penrith’s Team of Legends – an incredible achievement for a rangy Englishman who played just 46 games in Penrith colours.

These days Ashurst enjoys his time in the north of England, cheering on Penrith’s legends of the future, watching every game on TV. Tyrone Peachey and Matt Moylan are two of his favourite players.

n the 79th minute of Penrith’s demolition of the Bulldogs last weekend, fan favourite Josh Mansour scored a classic winger’s try in the corner to complete a fairytale comeback seven months in the making.

When the full-time siren rang at 5.53pm last Sunday evening, no one at ANZ Stadium was more relieved to see Mansour get through the game intact than the 26-year-old himself.

“I’m back doing what I love, I’m so happy,” Mansour told Extra Time.

“I had a lot of nerves going into the game – both good and bad. I had so many thoughts flooding my mind, which made my very vulnerable, but I’m definitely grateful for the way the game panned out and I was able to leave the field unscathed.”

In November last year, Mansour ruptured his ACL during a freak accident at Kangaroos training when he collided with Dragons star Josh Dugan.

Mansour out for the remainder of the Four Nations tournament but the entire first half of the 2017 season.

Mansour described his seven months on the sidelines as “frustrating, long and painful”.

“I was just counting down the weeks.

We always planned for a Round 13 return against Canterbury. We didn’t want to go any sooner than that because, with ACLs, it’s a career threatening injury, you don’t want to rush into playing,” he said.

“I was fortunate the physios and rehab staff looked after me from day one. As a player when you have staff care for you, it really motivates you.”

After putting 38 unanswered points on Canterbury last weekend, Mansour’s teammates were also buzzing upon his return.

Up until Mansour’s comeback game Penrith had been enduring a roller coaster start to the year, seemingly missing what the man they call ‘Sauce’ has to offer.

Mansour cheekily agreed, saying his teammates enjoyed having him back.

“I’m not going to lie, they did, I’ll probably cop some stick for that comment,” he laughed.

However, while seven months in rehab certainly took its toll, things weren’t all doom and gloom for Mansour during that time.

In April, he and his beautiful wife Daniella announced they were pregnant with the couple’s first child. The powerful winger said he owes everything to his wife for always standing by him.

“My wife is my number one supporter and has sacrificed a lot for me,” he said.

“We weren’t able to go on our honeymoon last year and to be expecting a child is mind-blowing.”

It’s time for the NRL to show more respect for the bush

enrith will take another game to the beautiful town of Bathurst this weekend, and I strongly believe that every team in the NRL should have an association with a country town in either NSW or Queensland.

Teams have taken games to other parts of Australia in the past, including Adelaide, Perth and Darwin, but I’d rather see those games being played in the bush, where the game is strong.

The Panthers have really set the tone with this by recently signing a new 10-year deal to play games in Bathurst.

For the last couple of years, I was lucky to go out to Bathurst with the Panthers and it was a fantastic experience.

It really made me and the other players realise just how much the people in the bush love their footy.

I honestly believe that without the people in the bush, the game would not survive.

Penrith’s deal with Bathurst is wonderful for the fans but it also gives us players a chance to get away, meet some new people and gather new opportunities.

With the NRL recently dumping the annual City Country fixture for the foreseeable future, I think taking more NRL games to the bush will win back plenty of brownie points for the game’s governing body.

I think it’s the perfect way to get crowds going to games again.

Last weekend there were three games played at ANZ Stadium and the crowd looked awful on TV in each and every one of them.

You really lose that sense of occasion when you play in front of such small crowds at big stadiums.

I know when I’m commentating for radio, you want to see a packed stadium and feel that atmosphere.

Taking more NRL games to the bush will not only look way better on TV but it will do wonders for the game.

Lastly, I just want to congratulate an ex-teammate of mine, Josh Mansour, on a fantastic return from injury last Sunday afternoon.

In our game, when you are injured, it takes a lot of support from family, friends, coaching staff and teammates to get back on your feet.

Close your eyes and it feels like 1975 all over again

One of the most famous scorelines in rugby league history. It was the 1975 Grand Final and the Roosters beat the Dragons, white boots and all.

It was Arthur Beetson, Johnny Peard, Ian Schubert and company... what a team, what a performance!

Now fast forward 42 years...

38 points to nil.

The Panthers beat the Bulldogs on a chilly June Sunday afternoon. Actually, let me correct that. The Panthers thumped them!

No. No similarities or comparisons apart from a scoreline, for now anyway.

The last time my bad melon was pictured above I spoke of the Panthers, and the game I considered would be the turning point of their season.

At half-time, I looked even more silly than normal, however Penrith’s second 40 minute performance against the Warriors was... well, it was WOW! Timing. Execution. Momentum. Confidence. It was all there.

Where it came from all of a sudden I don’t know, but it was there and it still is judging by that game on the weekend.

Again, what a performance!

THIS was the side we expected to see in round one, the side we expected to see at the north tip of the competition ladder.

The side we expected, well many did, to win the whole damn thing.

There is no doubt it has been a rocky road. That opening game against the Dragons cut Penrith deeply, and while they did manage to collect a few wins in the early part of the season, getting over that thrashing really took Anthony Griffin’s men some time.

A change of position here and there, a return from injury, an honesty session and hard work.

Sure there’s other reasons for the dramatic improvement but this looked a completely different side.

Not like the side that won in 1975, but it could. See, they played with confidence, and had a certain swagger when they walked too.

The Penrith Panthers Class of ‘17 have got that swagger now. And lots of it!

he headline on the Monday, October 6, 2003 edition of the Daily Telegraph summed it up: “Perfect”.

Penrith’s 18-6 Grand Final win over the Sydney Roosters on October 5, 2003 was one of the most magical days in the club’s history.

Despite finishing minor premiers, the Panthers still went into the season decider against the Roosters as underdogs, but defied all expectations by winning by 12 points in wet conditions at ANZ Stadium.

The Telegraph’s front page declared: “This is what joy looks like. 21-year-old Luke Rooney scores one of his two tries in the game no one said the Panthers

could win. For Penrith, fairytales do come true”.

Inside, under the headline “Tears, cheers and league’s greatest fairytale in years”, the praise continued: “The Grand Final of October 5, 2003, will forever be remembered as one of the greatest games of rugby league”.

In front of a crowd of 81,166, the Panthers were simply superb.

“The ferocity and intensity was greater than some State of Origin matches,” the Telegraph declared in its match report.

“The opening set of six tackles alone was as fierce as anyone could remember.”

After the game, Scott Sattler – who produced one of the most remarkable grand final tackles of all time in the second half to save a certain try – spoke about being written off by the critics.

“All that matters is that we believed in ourselves,” he said.

“We knew we could beat them. We

were always going to try to frustrate them”.

The late Peter Frilingos, one of the most revered journalists in the game at the time, couldn’t stop raving about Penrith’s effort in the season decider.

“There’s no question the game ranked up there as one of the great season deciders,” he wrote.

“Penrith’s victory in last night’s momentous Grand Final proved that nothing is impossible in the game of rugby league”.

Whether it was that Penrith had come from last to first in the space of two years, Sattler’s tackle or simply that this team played with such inspiring spirit, the memories of 2003 will live on forever.

It was a special game by a special team, but moreso, a very special season.

Murray’s driven by music

e may have passed on that famous red skivvy, but ex-Wiggle Murray Cook hasn’t lost his passion for all

things music.

This June the popular children’s entertainer will be joining Penrith Symphony Orchestra for a very special performance of Camille Saint-Saëns’ much loved ‘Carnival of the Animals’.

“It was written specifically for children, with the different instruments representing different animals,” Murray explained of the show.

Taking on the role of narrator didn’t involve much arm-twisting for Murray, who was keen to work with Penrith Symphony Orchestra again after a successful collaboration in 2015.

“I performed with Penrith Symphony Orchestra in ‘Peter and the Wolf’ and it went really well so George Ellis, who’s conducting and does a lot of these shows for children, asked me to come back to do something a bit different,” Murray said.

Though he’s still involved in the business side of The Wiggles empire, Murray spends more time these days performing for big kids than little ones.

“I have a band called the Soul Movers, we’ve recorded an album that’s coming out through ABC Music later this year,” he said.

“I also play guitar in a few other acts, so I’m still doing what I love but I have a bit more time to spend with the family.”

Last year Murray and his fellow Wiggles decided to don their iconic colours for a string of hugely popular 18+ pub shows, playing to adult fans who grew up on their music.

“We did it fairly straight, we did it as if it was a kids’ show, just a bit rockier. We had a full band and drums and everything,” he said.

“There was still a kind of feeling of innocence in the audience even though they were grown ups.”

With 20-somethings constantly approaching them on the streets, The Wiggles thought the shows would find a decent audience, but they didn’t predict just how popular the concept would be.

“We thought it would go OK but it was pretty insane just how quickly the shows sold out,” Murray said.

‘Carnival of the Animals’ will be on at The Joan on Sunday, June 18 at 11am.

his year the Penrith City Choir turns 40 and music loving children aged seven to 13 have been invited to join in on the celebrations.

The Penrith City Children’s Choir will take part in the ‘Fabulous Forty!’ project, which will see the children’s choir come together with the Penrith City Choir for a public concert titled ‘Gloria’ at St Nicholas of Myra Church.

Workshops for the project, which is the Penrith City Children’s Choir’s second of the year, will kick off on Sunday, June 25, and are open to children of all singing abilities.

Directed by Lucy McAlary choir members will learn the celebratory work ‘Festival Gloria’ by American composer Craig Courtney, plus John Rutter’s ‘Mass of the Children’, which will close out this very special concert event.

This unique project will allow kids the chance to perform with a wellestablished adult choir, backed by a string quartet and percussion.

Based on the Marvel comics Old Man Logan storyline, the film is set in 2029 and follows a past-his-prime Logan (Hugh Jackman) who is caring for a sick Professor X (Patrick Stewart) in a remote area near the Mexican border.

Though Logan is attempting to hide from the world, his secrecy gets interrupted when he’s introduced to a young mutant called Laura (Dafne Keen), who he must protect from the dark forces that are out to get her.

Rotten Tomatoes has praised the film for being a ‘violent but surprisingly thoughtful action film that defies genre conventions’.

Pop superstar Katy Perry is back with a new look and a new sound on her fifth studio album ‘Witness’.

So far the album has spawned several singles including the racy pop-dance track ‘Bon Appetit’, which features hip hop group Migos.

Katy also teamed up with Nicki Minaj on the dance track ‘Swish Swish’ and worked with Jamaican singer Skip Marley on ‘Chained To The Rythmn’, which was cowritten by Australia’s own pop icon Sia. Look out for Katy when she visits Australia in the coming weeks.

Does your child complain of heel pain?

Are they withdrawing from activity?

Coming into the middle of the sporting season practitioners often see children presenting with “heel pain” and most of the time this heel pain is Sever’s disease.

What is Sever’s disease?

Sever’s is a common painful inflammation of the growth plate which the Achilles attaches to. It is noticed around periods of ‘growth spurts’ between eight to 14-years-old due to the heel bone not fully developing until approximately 15.

Active children between these ages put unwanted repetitive stress through this attachment point during physical activity. This stress irritates the growth plate, thus resulting in pain.

Overuse and stress to the heel is the primary cause of Sever’s. ‘Growth spurt’ periods also put children at more risk due to bones growing faster than the attaching muscles, resulting in the Achilles tendon pulling tightly on the growth plate, causing pain and inflammation.

Who is at risk?

Children that are active in sports that involve running or jumping are at more risk due to heel stresses. Additional mechanical issues like feet that ‘roll in’

What to look for?

Your child might have pain, swelling and redness along the bottom of their heel; particularly when the sides are squeezed. Some children feel the need to withdraw from sporting activities due to discomfort.

How is it managed?

It is important to have an assessment with a Podiatrist or Physiotherapist.

Treatment should be sought earlier rather than later as Sever’s is progressive.

Simple RICE management should be

started to reduce pain and inflammation.

This involves: • Rest. Avoid activity that cause irritation and stress to the heel • Ice the area • Compression bandages help reduce inflammation • Elevating the foot above the level of the heart Practitioners may introduce a treatment plan of physical therapy to promote healing and range of motion. Everyday and sporting footwear changes may also be made so that the foot is supported appropriately during physical activity.

Do your children just hate homework? That’s no surprise, but our expert in education, Rob Ollis, believes homework is vital to ensuring success in school...

Firstly, if you are reading this you probably did some homework in your school career, and if you were like most students, you probably resented the fact that homework prevented you from participating in some other enjoyable task, like watching TV or socialising on social media.

Everyone has an opinion on what constitutes homework and what is the real value, if any, for giving homework to kids.

In general there are three distinct types of homework given by teachers in our schools: 1. The project, such as build a volcano, write a story on conservation, etc.

2. The student is asked to complete some section of the work that was started in class and not completed by everyone.

3. The student is asked to research a topic and write a report or essay.

The first type is the bane of every

parent or carer and is generally given to primary students or junior high school students.

Quite often it is the parent who does the project, and they do it in order to give their progeny an advantage.

Unfortunately, in today’s society, both parents work and have little time to spend on such activities.

The other two types of homework do have some practical advantages and I confess that I gave this type of homework to students.

The main advantages that I felt accrued from giving homework to students were: 1. Students often only mastered a concept after quiet reflection on their own time at home.

2. It created a discipline for study.

3. It rewarded the diligent class worker; the more work completed in class the less to do at home.

I have taught with some brilliant teachers who very seldom gave homework and still gained excellent and the converse situation.

There will never be agreement on this situation with some schools now banning homework.

My view, if you want your children to succeed at the HSC level, then extra home study is a vital part of that success.

Next week we will discuss the ways to create good study habits.

How to introduce your new baby to your furry friend How will your dog react when you bring home a new baby?

For the last few weeks we have been discussing children and dogs. Last week’s article was about preparing puppies for a happy long term relationship with children. It’s great when puppies and kids grow together but sometimes we are faced with the situation of introducing babies around adult dogs.

This week we will discuss preparing the adult dog for a new baby.

The first thing to consider is the dog’s temperament; any type of aggressive or fearful behaviour – even if mild or subtle (such as growling or pricking ears back) should be addressed by a professional (such as a veterinary behaviourist) well before the baby arrives.

Some thought should be given into preparing the family dog before the arrival of the new baby. Dogs are likely to become anxious if the routine, environment or the way the family interacts with the dog changes. Therefore, gradual adjustments should be made before the baby arrives.

Feeding, exercise, play schedules as well as sleeping/resting areas and any new routines/rules will need to be slowly introduced well ahead of the baby’s arrival.

This gives time for the dog to adjust to the changes and also time for you to train your dog.

It is important that your training focuses on positive reinforcement – this means rewarding good behaviour and ignoring bad behaviour.

So if you are trying to train your dog that the baby room is off limits, it is important to ignore the dog when it decides to go into the baby room and reward the dog with treats and attention when it decides to explore other rooms of the house.

If the family is consistent with their responses, the dog should quickly learn

those behaviours that are rewarded and those that are not.

The dog should also be prepared for the homecoming by exposing him/her to the noises and smells of the new baby. If the dog becomes frightened or anxious when it hears strange sounds, a recording of baby noises can be used as a part of a desensitisation and counterconditioning program; this may involve playing the noises at very low volume and giving the dog treats and slowly increasing the volume over a matter of weeks.

A towel or blanket with the baby’s scent can also be taken home to prepare the pet for the new smells.

Some dogs can also become anxious when the mother carries and nurses a noisy baby.

It is a good idea to practice with a doll (preferably one that makes noise) and see how the dog responds.

If the dog becomes anxious, try and make a positive association with the doll by giving the dog food rewards and attention every time it sees the doll and the mother nursing it.

It is important to remember that regardless of how gentle your dog is, animals and children should never be left unsupervised.

Pentecost’s incredible 100km effort p.70 NATHAN TAYLOR

he Penrith Cricket Club capped off a remarkable 2016/17 season at their Annual Presentation Evening last weekend.

Held at Penrith Panthers, more than 120 players, officials, supporters and family members turned out to celebrate the game and the local individuals that give it their all week in, week out.

Hosted by club legend Michael Wholohan, the two major awards for the night were presented to the Men’s and Women’s Player of the Year.

The Men’s Player of the Year award went to Third Grade all-rounder Daniel Sparkes, while First Grader Lisa Griffith was crowned Women’s Player of the Year.

Speaking with the Weekender, Penrith Cricket Club President Paul Goldsmith said Sparkes was a worthy recipient of Men’s Player of the Year.

“Daniel is predominantly a fast bowler but he’s also very handy with the bat,” he said.

“He missed a few games through injury during the season but he came home with a wet sail – winning player of the match numerous times.”

Penrith representative bowler Josh Lalor was another of the night’s big winners, taking home One Day Player of the Year and was a joint winner with John DiBartolo for T20 Player of the Year.

Top women’s female all-rounder Hannah Darlington also took home plenty of silverware, named Women’s Batter of the Year and Bowler of the Year.

Another one of the major awards of the night went to Peter Hazard for Club Person of the Year.

Involved with Penrith Cricket for many years and now as Club Secretary, Hazard was a reluctant recipient of the award.

“Peter thought as a committee member that he wasn’t worthy of recognition because it’s kind of what you sign up for,” Goldsmith said.

“Peter does his secretary role very well and is involved with everything on game days, including looking after the canteen.

“He is truly a Mr Everything.”

The Weekender’s Meet The President series introduces you to the people in charge of our local sporting clubs. This week, we chat with Penrith City Softball Association President Justin Saunby...

How long have you been the President of Penrith City Softball Association for?

This is my second year as President.

How long have you been involved with softball and what were your previous roles?

I have been involved with softball over the past six years, firstly as a parent and volunteer helping with grounds, the canteen and gala days, then I started coaching junior teams. I then moved into the Executive committee firstly as an Assistant Secretary then onto President.

As a parent with kids in the sport I firmly believe that if you want to pass judgement on the way the game is played or the direction of the sport then you have to be willing to put your hand up and contribute.

Explain what your role entails?

My role ranges from liaising with Softball

NSW, Penrith Council, our wonderful hard working clubs, dealing with the day to day issues that arise, organising Gala days and looking at better ways to improve our sport for the future. Most importantly it’s about making sure our members are having fun playing the sport they love.

I am lucky to be involved with a great Executive Committee who without their support, hard work and dedication, my role would not be possible.

Tell me about your softball background, how did you fall in love with the sport?

My eldest daughter asked to play with her friends when she was about seven at the Surveyors Creek Softball Facility in Glenmore Park. At the time I thought it was a great idea for her to be involved in a team sport and we decided to sign up our second daughter also.

The great thing we found was that all games were at the same place and same time each week, so we could still plan our weekend. The other thing that we were impressed with was the overall cost and that it catered for kids and adults of all ages. It also didn’t matter what your fitness level was or how tall you were. A few years later our youngest daughter started playing as well and at the same

time, after a few years coaching, I got the itch to play softball myself. I thought I would try and show the kids what not to do on the field. I grew up playing baseball, so after many years away from the sport I found the game to be a lot faster and, for older adults, it is great as you do not need to run as far between bases.

What we did find was that the softball community is like a big family and my kids just love being at the fields on a Saturday with their friends.

What are some of the challenges/issues facing softball locally?

Our facilities are great but a couple of things would help us provide more for our members and the community including better lighting. If our lighting was up to standard we could offer different competition times to cater for the members that work on a Saturday. We would love more shade and seating so spectators are comfortable and relaxed to enjoy the games. Other things like playing surface, footpaths around the fields, a park for the little kids to play, better drainage to reduce washouts and more amenities would improve the facility for the next generation and provide a stable platform for the growth of the sport.

If you could improve one area of your sport on a local level, what would it be?

One of our main issues is the fact that our sport does not have a high profile which makes it hard to attract new players. We find that once kids and adults start playing they love it but it is getting them here to begin with. Our clubs and association work extremely hard to advertise our sport to attract more members but there are so many different sports on offer and sometimes it’s hard to compete. For value for money we would be one of the cheapest sports around for a 15 week competition over summer. Our main goal would be to boost our public profile in the area.

Are you happy with the amount of Government funding your club receives or could you do with more financial help?

We have great support from Penrith Council and we know they do everything possible for us but, like every other sport, we could always do with more help, more funding and improved facilities.

One of the main areas we currently need assistance in is upgrading our lighting and playing surface. To pay for these improvements we generally need to fundraise or apply for grants from Council, which takes a lot of time and effort.

a family affair playing facilities to ensure a bright future There are always plenty of success stories about softball in the Weekender, what is the one thing you are proud of?

The Penrith City Softball Association is extremely successful and has a rich history as constantly being among the top four softball associations in NSW. Over the years we have been the Softball NSW Affiliate of the Year on a few occasions, and we have won various NSW State titles over many different age groups.

We have coaching staff that have coached and assisted at state, national and international levels, and our umpires also officiate on the big stage.

We have players that constantly give their all for the Association and play for state, national and international teams, and we hold gala days that attract many associations from across the state.

But the thing I am most proud of is the members, life members, families and volunteers that make it all possible.

Without these people none of these great achievements would be possible.

How many registered members does Penrith Softball currently have and how do you plan to grow the game?

We currently have approximately 750 members.

We have a number of T-ball and Modball competitions for kids and teens.

We have age groups U16, U19 through to adults where we have different competitions for both men and women, and different divisions depending on your skill level.

We are looking at adopting new formats to increase numbers across the field and we will be targeting kids from all ages to boost our numbers into the future.

Looking into your crystal ball, where do you see the sport locally in five years time?

With softball included in the 2020 Olympics, hopefully we get a boost in the public profile of the sport and that then results in membership growth for a stronger and better competition in the future.

The more we can attract kids and adults to get out on the diamond, playing sport each week the better it is for the community as a whole.

By 2022 I would like to see our membership double and our facility upgraded to allow for different levels of competition in the Penrith region.

Pentecost, the skipper of the Panthers Wheelchair Rugby League team, is this year raising money for eight-year-old local boy Cooper Randall.

Whilst in his mother’s womb, Cooper was diagnosed with congenital posterior urethral valves, which later resulted in stage 3 chronic kidney disease.

Due to constant urine infections and other health issues, Cooper regularly attends Westmead Children’s Hospital for check-ups and treatment.

Recently, Cooper discovered that he requires a kidney transplant, which his father Brendan will be donating to him.

Pentecost couldn’t think of a better cause to get behind for this year’s Pusha-thon event.

“I met Cooper through my role as Welfare Officer with Men of League,” he said.

“Cooper needs a kidney transplant and has a number of ongoing costs involved with that, so that’s where the Push-a-

Now in its fifth year, Pentecost will complete the 100km challenge at the Regatta Centre in Penrith today (Friday, June 9) and Saturday, June 10.

He is hoping to raise $5000 for the tough, young Brothers Junior Rugby League player.

“Despite Cooper having all these health issues, it does not bother him,” Pentecost said.

“Cooper is a very happy-go-lucky kid,

with a kind sense of humour. His attitude is positive and fun-loving.”

All funds raised will go towards ongoing costs of medications, doctor’s appointments and anything else Cooper needs to feel comfortable and well.

Pentecost is asking the local Penrith community and its many businesses for support.

Around the grounds RUGBY: The Penrith Emus have been thrashed at the hands of Randwick 71-26 in Round 10 of the Shute Shield competition. This Saturday afternoon the Emus will return to Nepean Rugby Park to battle Northern Suburbs.

Round 2 of the Netball NSW Premier League competition. Meanwhile, the Panthers Under 20’s team continued their winning run, defeating the Stingrays 61-50. Both teams will take on the Manly Warringah Sapphires in Round 3.

AUSSIE RULES: The Penrith Rams have won three in a row, hammering the UTS Bats 111-67 in Round 9 of the AFL Sydney Division 2 competition.

Mitchell Stevens top scored with five goals for the Rams. Penrith will have this weekend off before battling the Manly Warringah Wolves next weekend. Meanwhile, the Auburn-Penrith Giants have bounced back to defeat Macquarie University 32-28 in Round 9 of the AFL Sydney Premier Women’s Division competition. Jacqueline Gay and Leah Eubel scored two goals each for the Giants. The Giants will enjoy a rest this weekend before taking on the Newtown Breakaways next Saturday.

SOFTBALL: The Penrith City Softball Association’s U19 Girls team finished equal third at last weekend’s NSW U19’s Girls State Championships.

AFL: The GWS Giants are now sole leaders of the AFL after defeating Essendon 117-101 in Round 11 last weekend. GWS’ Josh Kelly was the star of the show, finishing the game with a career-high 38 possessions.

The Giants will aim for five in a row when they take on Carlton this Sunday afternoon in Melbourne.

BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers have lost their first game in weeks, defeated by the Hills Hornets 81-77 in Round 13 of the Division 1 Youth League Men’s competition. Penrith’s Sean Weeks shot a team-high 27 points in the narrow loss. The Panthers will enjoy this weekend off before taking on the Blacktown Storm and Manly Warringah Sea Eagles in a double-header next weekend. Meanwhile, Penrith’s Division 1 Youth League Women’s team had an excellent weekend defeating the Illawarra Hawks 61-52 before backing that win up with another the following day against the Liverpool-Macarthur Razorbacks 80-44. This weekend the side will enjoy a well-earned break before taking on the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles in Round 14.

iants Netball are through to the Super Netball Preliminary Final after a thrilling 52-51 comeback win over Collingwood last Saturday night at Sydney Olympic Park.

The Giants will travel to Melbourne this weekend to battle the Vixens for the right to face the Sunshine Coast Lightning in the first ever Super Netball Grand Final.

Down by five goals in the final quarter, the Giants found another gear in the dying minutes to deny the visitors and send their supporters home happy after one of the games of the season.

Speaking after the epic contest, Giants head coach Julie Fitzgerald said she was immensely proud of her group for never giving up.

“We made some costly errors tonight but we were able to regroup every time and I think that was key to the win,” she said.

“There were times when we let things get away from us but the way we fought back I think will stand us in good stead going forward.”
