“We’re back in the dark ages” Frustrated Cambridge Park residents are still without phone and Internet services DALE DRINKWATER
@daledrinkwater
esidents, schools and even businesses in Cambridge Park have not had their normal Telstra phone and Internet services for almost five weeks. Lee Gray from Deborah Crescent said her Telstra phone and Internet has been completely out of action since severe storms lashed the area on April 24. “I’ve got to go to the bank and pay my bills – I feel like we are all back in the dark ages,” she said. “My sons have homework so we have to go to the library and pay for Internet.” Ms Gray was told by Telstra the problems would be fixed by May 25 and is frustrated that her neighbours, with other providers, still had their services during this time. Telstra has paid one of Ms Gray’s phone bills and offered her a satellite phone to compensate, but she did not believe it was suited to her needs. “I asked for a USB stick because I’m studying online and have to go to the library, but I’m preserving the data on it because it’s so minimal for my email messages,” she said. Deborah Crescent is not alone, with Cambridge Park Public School on an adja-

cent street also struggling without their normal phone connection. The school’s relieving principal, Janice Clark said after the first storm, administration couldn’t makes calls for over a week, but it didn’t end there. “There was the second outage from May 6 to 15, and the third outage from May 18 until now,” she said. Telstra have now restored one phone line into the school and reconnected them with the pre-school at the back of the school. “Incoming calls are diverted to the school mobile and we have one line that Telstra have given us to use but it’s not our number so no-one is calling it,” she said. “It’s been difficult because parents are trying to ring in and it’s the one line.” Telstra’s Area General Manager, Andrew Bogg said Telstra has been doing everything they can to restore services quickly, but the storms did significant damage. “It has been a complicated repair process given water damage to the cable and the fact it has caused multiple faults on a number of different parts of the cable,” he said. “A number of services have already been restored and we expect all services to be restored before the end of this week.”

Time for debate is over: Australia should legalise same-sex marriage The time for debating same-sex marriage is over. It’s going to happen, and it would seem that before the next Federal Election, Australia will join other forward-thinking countries and push the go button on this important issue. The time for change has come. Some will argue the time for change came long ago but it’s easy to have such a view when you’re on one specific side of the argument. This is not necessarily a black and white issue for everyone involved and there at least needs to be respect for the opinions of those who sit on the ‘no’ side of this issue. However, those opinions are becoming more and more irrelevant as most of us realise that when it all comes down to it, what’s the harm? Are we really going to try and defend the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman when divorce has commonplace in today’s society, domestic violence is such a growing and pertinent problem and we have dating services and websites that actually specialise in matching people who want to have an affair? Are we really going to try and use the Bible as a defence, and pretend that we were never meant to progress and change as a society? I don’t buy the “needing a mum and a dad theory either. Every family and child has different circumstances no matter what the sexuality of their parents. Up until about 12 years ago, I rarely gave samesex marriage a thought. Growing up in the western suburbs, it’s generally not one of the topics that get a run in the playground. But in 2003 I started dabbling in the theatre industry, not as an actor (trust me, you wouldn’t want to see that) but as a reviewer and producer. In many cases the theatrical stereotype rings true and there’s a high percentage of people in the industry who are gay. For the first time in my life, my eyes were opened to a community full of wonderful people who were open-minded,

honest and exceptionally talented at their chosen professions. For most, being gay isn’t about parading down Oxford Street once a year or rocking out to Kylie Minogue – that’s a stereotype that most of us choose to believe and that is often thrust upon us by mainstream society. In reality, their sexuality does not define them. Like you and I, what defines them is the quality of person they are and the respect they have for themselves and others. If I learned anything during that time, it was that for me, a person’s sexuality means as much to me as their political preference, which footy team they support and what they choose to eat – we’re all different, and that should be embraced. Others find this concept too difficult to accept and will forever be against same-sex marriage even though they’re unlikely to ever be affected by it. Their day to day lives will not change just because two men or two women are allowed to be legally married. Some will, of course, see the light. Many of those will be in Canberra and ultimately, the politicians representing us today have an opportunity to drive an important and justified social revolution. I don’t expect Prime Minister Tony Abbott to ever change his personal view on same-sex marriage and in fact, I respect him for that. I disagree with him, but I respect his view. It would seem, however, that the Prime Minister will ultimately not stand in the way of this major change happening in the near future. Politics of the past few weeks aside, there will ultimately be unity in the parliament. In November, I’ll be getting married. The leadup to it all is a fantastic time and the day itself will be a mixture of nerves, fun and excitement. I honestly can’t see any legitimate reason why two people of the same sex who love each other shouldn’t be able to enjoy the same privilege that I’ll enjoy in just a few short months.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler at the St Hilliers development in Thornton, North Penrith Interest in CBD apartment living is already high, and in some cases they are selling ‘off the plan’. Cr Fowler said Council is in a good position to create what is envisaged by the Penrith Progression from these developments, and there is a huge potential for future DAs. “It would be nice to see a DA come forward for an iconic building on the
Thornton side in addition to what is already proposed,” he said. Penrith Progression Director, Craig Butler has encouraged mixed use developments that incorporate both jobs and apartments in the city centre. “It’s important the city centre offers a mix of housing types, including affordable housing and apartments,” Mr Butler said.

hoice, a vibrant city centre and affordable housing is what is expected to follow a recent boom in residential development applications around Penrith. Penrith City Council has recently received over $300 million in development applications (DA) that will bring apartment living to the city centre and create a night time economy. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said Council is committed to providing alternative housing that is more affordable while ensuring ‘smart growth’. “It’s all about giving choice and making sure we have a variety of housing on offer whether it’s apartment, townhouses or detached cottages,” he said. “Smart growth includes considering building impacts such as shade, parking and traffic for the city as a whole, rather than just site by site.” Council is approaching CBD apartment living strategically, and said higher buildings will be typically situated around the commercial centre and the station. “To get into the property market and buy an apartment that is close to railways and close to transport certainly has it advantages,” Cr Fowler said.

Police snapshot Penrith: Police discover man went missing after pursuit
Llandilo: Toddler almost drowns in frightening incident
LEURA FIRST SUNDAY MARKETS
A critical incident investigation has been launched after the disappearance of a man following a pursuit in Penrith. On Friday, April 24, police attempted to stop a vehicle on Castlereagh Road, Penrith when it allegedly failed to stop and a police pursuit began. At the intersection of Coreen Avenue, the vehicle came to a stop, with two men and a woman arrested. Jordan Morris, 22, was reported missing to police last Tuesday with a search now underway. He is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 165 to 170cm tall, of slim build, with brown hair and blue eyes. He has two tattoos – one on his left wrist and left lower arm. Police urge anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
A two-year-old girl was saved from drowning in a backyard pool at Llandilo last weekend. Found cold and unconscious, the girl’s father began CPR in an attempt to revive her. She had been missing no more than 10 minutes when her father found her with no signs of life. NSW Ambulance paramedics continued the CPR, realising she was in cardiac arrest. The CareFlight rapid response trauma team was notified and arrived at the adjacent property only minutes later. Circulation was restored after the specialist medical team gave further treatment, including intubation, when they detected a faint pulse. The girl was placed in a road ambulance and taken to hospital.

South Penrith: Men flee empty handed after robbery attempt
Kemps Creek: Three injured in bad crash on Mamre Road
Two men have fled a local pub in South Penrith after alleged unsuccessful attempts were made to open the cash registers. Just after 12am on Monday, June 1, the men, armed with a metal pole, broke into a pub on Maxwell Street in South Penrith, using the pole to break a window. They entered the hotel where they were then confronted by a group of contractors who were laying carpet. After the contractors were forced into one of the pub’s hallways, they then ransacked the pub, allegedly attempting to open cash registers. The duo fled empty-handed. Investigations are continuing.
Police are appealing to a taxi driver who may have witnessed a serious collision in Kemps Creek last weekend. Just after 5pm on Saturday, May 30, emergency services were called to Mamre Road after a head-on collision. A silver Holden Commodore and a black Toyota Corolla were involved in the accident. The two men travelling in the Commodore, aged 27 and 23, and the one woman travelling in the Corolla, aged 44, had to be cut from their vehicles. They were then transported to Liverpool Hospital for the treatment of non-lifethreatening injuries.

lenmore Park resident Kevin Robinson was sacked as CEO of the charity Little Wings on Monday night after allegations were made against him for inappropriate sexual conduct. As the founder of the charity, Mr Robinson earned himself a nomination in this year’s Australian of the Year competition in the Local Hero category, due to his work in giving children who live in the bush with cancer the opportunity for treatment in city areas. A mother of a cancer victim, who Mr Robinson was helping, has made allegations that he was sending pornographic text messages to her, prompting the Board of Little Wings to dismiss him as CEO of the charity. Sponsor of Little Wings, Clubs NSW, notified the Board of the allegations after it was brought to their attention.
Little Wings was unable to be reached by the Weekender despite repeated attempts this week, but they did release a statement to The Daily Telegraph on Tuesday. “On Monday the Board of Little Wings terminated Mr Robinson as CEO and Director of the organisation,” the statement said. “The decision was taken promptly once the Board became fully aware of the circumstances relating to allegations against Mr Robinson. “We remain committed to supporting children with life threatening illnesses, and their families, especially as the Little Wings service is the only one of its kind providing such help to families in country NSW.” Police are understood to be investigating the matter. Mr Robinson didn’t answer any of the Weekender’s phone calls to comment on the story.
“We were recently made aware of some disturbing allegations and after making our own inquiries, we quickly raised the matter with the Little Wings Board who, in turn, terminated Mr Robinson,” Clubs NSW CEO, Anthony Ball said. “40 families are currently relying on the Little Wings service and we don’t want to see them left without that vital support. “We want to help seriously ill children and their families from across regional and rural NSW get the help they desperately need and, if appropriate action is taken by Little Wings, we will continue to do so.” Making its start in 2012, Little Wings supports children with life threatening illnesses by providing a free ongoing flight service to the children and their families in regional and rural areas of NSW for treatment at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, at Randwick and at John Hunter Children’s Hospital in Newcastle.

Council set to get tough on gyms 24 hour gyms are the new big thing, but concerns have been raised about the safety of members DALE DRINKWATER
@daledrinkwater
ne local 24 hour gym operator is delighted with Penrith City Council’s investigation into staffing rules – one that would make some other 24 hour gyms in the area squirm. Council is seeking a review into the regulation of staffing for 24 hour gyms, after concerns were raised about the safety of customers when exercising outside staff hours. Unlike a range of major franchises locally and statewide, Revolutions Gym, located in St Marys and Emu Plains, staffs its premises’ 24 hours a day. Gym owner Paul Chamma said the cost of staffing his business for 24 hours a day is enormous, but worth every dollar to provide peace of mind for both he and his members. “When I’m sleeping at home I know that my members are safe,” he said. “Women aren’t going to be followed into bathrooms and if you want to train properly, there will be someone here to advise you how to use the machine.” Mr Chamma said to install a key tag system to monitor who walks through the door would have the same one-off cost as

what he would have to pay yearly to staff his facility 24 hours a day. “By using just a tag security system I could save myself potentially half a million dollars in wages over a 10 year lease,” he said. Mr Chamma said it’s about time the government looked into making sure all 24 hour gyms were staffed, despite meaning his business potentially losing its competitive advantage. “For the industry and the consumer, it is best,” he said. “It’s really good that Council has brought this issue up and I hope it gets looked at and things happen quickly.” The report to Council was requested by Councillor Maurice Girotto, who said the industry has grown faster than the legislation surrounding it. “No one is trying to ruin the industry, but if you want a 24 hour gym you need to make sure someone is there at all times,” he said. “I don’t want Council to come out with a big stick, but just to put pressure on the Department of Fair Trading and Fitness Australia to implement these things in their code of conduct.” Should all 24 hour gyms be staffed? Tell us on Twitter: @wwpenrith.

In 2014 a similar student led project in Callisto Park, Cranebrook delivered new playground facilities to widespread community acclaim. The first workshop will concentrate on the initial visions the young people have for their neighbourhood and their park. The Mayor will challenge the students to incorporate a set theme or topic into their plans with the findings from the workshop being presented to the Mayor and Councillors at a later date. s Penrith Council will remediate seven traffic accident black spots with funding awarded by the Federal and State Governments. Five locations were put forward for the Federal Government’s 2015/16 Nation Building Black Spot Program which has resulted in $400,000 worth of funding being allocated to these projects. A further $301,000 has been acquired from the State Government under its Safer Roads program for a further two projects. Preliminary design work is currently under way which will enable the projects to commence shortly and will result in improved levels of safety and a reduction in accidents on local roads. The funding would not have been possible without local and state members and their continued support of road safety improvements.
PUBLIC EXHIBITION Minor Amendment to the Penrith City Centre Civic Improvement Plan This notice advises the community of the public exhibition of a minor amendment to the Penrith City Centre Civic Improvement Plan (CIP) and invite written submissions. The CIP is a Development Contributions Plan, which is a public document that enables Council to charge or levy new development to fund additional local infrastructure (such as car parking), which will be needed as a result of that new development. The amendment to the CIP proposes deleting its current reference to parking standards required under the former Penrith City Centre Local Environmental Plan (which is now rescinded) and replacing it with a reference to parking standards required under the new Penrith Development Control Plan 2014, where these parking standards are now contained.
The draft amended s94 Plan will be publicly exhibited from Wednesday, 10 June 2015 until Friday, 10 July 2015. The public is invited to make written comments addressed to the General Manager at PO Box 60, Penrith 2751 on the draft plan and submit them during the exhibition period. Bowel cancer kills 77 Australians every week JADE ALIPRANDI
@jade_aliprandi
owel Cancer Awareness Month, June 1 to June 30, is an annual initiative aimed at raising awareness of a disease that claims 77 Australian lives every week. Penrith resident, Helen Jones-Dwyer, survived her diagnosis of bowel cancer after intensive treatment and a long road to recovery. “I screamed and yelled and carried on when I first found out. I think I was just in total shock,” she said. “I was quite scared to have radiation after seeing what the other patients looked like.” Ms Jones-Dwyer sought treatment from several doctors for over a year after she suffered from symptoms like pains in her stomach and back and mucous in her bowel motions. What she was told was irritable bowel syndrome was diagnosed in 2000 as bowel cancer after a rectal examination revealed a hard mass. Treatment was a tough road for the Penrith resident. “The chemo affected me in several ways,” Ms Jones-Dwyer said. “I suffered from second and third degree
B
burns around the top areas of my legs – I was unable to walk properly and sleeping was a nightmare.” Ms Jones-Dwyer says she still suffers from pain and discomfort 15 years later and has to deal with the ongoing challenges she faces. At 66-years-old, a colonoscopy is required every two years as well as regular check-ups at the doctors every three months to keep Ms Jones-Dwyer up-todate on her progress. “Shopping is harder because I can only carry so many items at once before it gets very heavy,” she said. “The most discomfort though would have to be my bowel and bladder that have now fused together and dropped down to my bottom area.” As part of Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, Bowel Cancer Australia (BCA) will be holding several events throughout June. To find out more about Red Apple Day on June 17, Dial-in-day on June 18 and BCA Light Ups from June 15 to June 21, visit www.bowelcancerawarenessmonth.org. “Aim to get checked by several doctors so you get different opinions, even if you don’t feel you need it, get checked every couple of years before it’s too late,” Ms Jones-Dwyer said.

I asked the students to be creative, to think about the needs of their community and to come up with a vision for a park they would be proud to deliver for their community. The students will present their ideas to Council via formal presentation in the coming weeks where my fellow Councillors will have the opportunity to consider the designs put forward. I’m looking forward to seeing what they have come up with, the room was abuzz with ideas that were fun, inspired people to get moving and enjoy the outdoor space of the park. It is fantastic to see young people taking leadership and being part of creating something valuable for their neighbourhood.

Water quality getting better after January fire @daledrinkwater
DALE DRINKWATER
ater quality is slowly improving in creeks around St Marys that were contaminated from a factory fire in Dunheved Business Park in January. Ropes Creek and South Creek were affected when contaminated water run off from the Severn Street factory, that was producing biodiesel, entered the creeks. Greens Councillor Michelle Tormey said amid further testing of the creeks, Council will now look at preventative measures to ensure this doesn’t happen in the future. “We need to look at whether or not we can undertake works around those business park channels to protect run off into the creeks in future events. There must be better ways to do things,” she said. “South Creek bears the brunt of these events. It will be good to see how we are looking at South Creek in its entirety. I don’t think it’s in a great state of health.” Council’s Environment Health Team have conducted testing along South Creek, with results indicating that water quality has generally improved since the incident. However, it still has high levels of metals both up and downstream of the incident site.
W
The most significant impacts were identified at the containment and clean up areas, where pollutants such as heavy metals, oils and grease were identified. Clean up of the site will continue, including surrounding storm water drains that lead to both South Creek and Ropes Creek. The report to Council identified how the incident was managed, but Cr Tormey has requested further investigation into how to prevent incidents like this to protect the waterways. “All in all that report was fair but there were still some unanswered questions I didn’t feel were addressed,” Cr Tormey said. “I asked for actual testing results to be released. I also asked for ways to protect the business park and what works can we undertake to protect the nearby waterways. “If we have auditing and compliance measures in place then these are ways we can prevent these kinds of incidents.” Council’s Environmental Auditing Officer will set up a program to identify high risk industrial premises, audit them for compliance and assess their fire safety. Council is working with the Environment Protection Authority in its investigation into whether the tenants breached water pollution and licensing requirements.

Council chips in to help environment Today marks World Environment Day and projects prove Council has the future as its focus JADE ALIPRANDI
@jade_aliprandi
rotecting the flora and fauna, improving storm water quality and removing noxious plants are all on Penrith City Council’s list of environmental issues to repair and mend as they prepare for World Environment Day today, June 5. World Environment Day is about creating awareness and encouraging action to fix environmental issues, something Penrith Council has taken on board. Council has embarked on a wide range of environmental projects over the past few years, with six currently on the go. A project to improve the quality of storm water, to be completed this month, will include a 2400m2 bioretention system near Andrews Road in Cranebrook to improve storm water quality in the Penrith Lakes Catchment. “The key project objective is to improve storm water quality draining from the upstream storm water catchment into the downstream receiving waters including the Waterside Lakes development, Penrith Lakes and the Nepean River,” a Council spokesperson said. The catchment project is projected to

Work underway in Peppermint Reserve in Kingswood cost around $1.2 million and is being funded through Council’s Storm Water Management Service Charge. Another project currently in the works, titled the ‘Cranebrook Bushland and Wetland Restoration project’, is all about removing noxious and environmental
weeds throughout the bushland and wetland. “Council have managed to establish a volunteer bushcare group who have been meeting once a month for the past six months to help protect the bushland,” a Council spokesperson said.
“For this project, Council will be holding a community planting day on July 25 as part of National Tree Day.” Work for this ongoing project is also aimed at helping to protect the endangered Cumberland Plain Land Snail and the Diamond Firetail. Council also received funding from the Greater Sydney Local Land Services to help restore the endangered Cumberland Plain Woodland in Peppermint Reserve in Kingswood. With the help of bush regeneration and revegetation, the bushland is on its way to being restored. Logs and hollows from a nearby development site have also been brought into the bushland to provide essential habitat for native fauna including microbats, lizards and small birds. To help protect native animals, Council is also about to install signage in places along the Glenmore Park Bushland Corridor to encourage drivers to drive safely past the area. World Environment Day’s theme this year is ‘Seven Billion Dreams. Consume with Care’. For more information, visit the World Environment Day website at www.unep. org/wed.

ith almost 140 fatal road incidents so far this year, police are urging the community to drive safely after an 82-year-old woman died in a three vehicle crash last week. At about 5.20pm on Wednesday, May 27, emergency services, including a helicopter, were called to an incident on Glossop Street in St Marys. A Holden Commodore was reportedly travelling west along Adelaide Street when it approached the intersection of Glossop Street.
W WW16278
According to police, a Toyota Kluger was travelling south along Glossop Street at the same time when the two vehicles collided, before both vehicles collided with a third car – a Hyundai iLoad. The Holden continued south along Glossop Street when it then hit a telegraph pole. A 76-year-old male was driving at the time and came away with serious injuries as did a 62-year-old male passenger. The pair were taken to hospital. St Marys Police are continuing their inquiries into the incident. Witnesses are urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

local printing business is making Government records larger than life, in a partnership that aims to creatively honour all who served in war. A major display has been created by Penrith’s Click Media for the State Records’ ‘Public Service/War Service’ exhibition that honours over 11,000 NSW Government employees. Click Media’s owner, Brendan McKeown said this is the largest scale project he has had with the Kingswood-based State Records to visually reproduce history for the community. “The State Records needed us to reproduce a couple of items from the archives, but this is probably the biggest one we’ve done,” he said. “The exhibition highlights the wartime experiences of NSW railway and harbour workers, teachers, administrators, printers, nurses, clerks, draftsmen, politicians and police. “It’s an opportunity for local people to learn about the records, they don’t realise they have access to it all for free.” The exhibition’s creative producer, Susan Charlton said over time their exhibitions

The exhibition is open to the public from Monday to Saturday at the Western State Records Centre, O’Connell Street, Kingswood.

After 11 applications were submitted to Penrith Council to design and construct the second stage of the sporting ground in Glenmore Park Stage 2, Council has decided to not accept any of them. The tenders received were not consistent with Council’s expectation of the costs of the total project that included civil works such as tree planting and the construction of a storage building. The cost to build the amenities was outside what Council expected, and thus they have now decided to redesign the building accordingly and separate the costs of the amenities from the civil works. Council will now call for a fresh round of tenders to be submitted to undertake the civil and landscape works separate to the building of amenities. Penrith Council did not apply for an increase in rates for the 2015/16 financial year, but said they will consult with the community before applying for one over the 2016/17 financial year. Over 2015/16 the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) approved Special Rate Variations for many other Councils in NSW that were seeking to increase their general income above the rate peg. Mayor Ross Fowler said Council has been making efficiencies
and improving productivity before the State Government put pressure on local governments to prove their financial stability through their Fit for the Future reforms. Cr Fowler said Council looks at other avenues before applying for SRV’s, as they had done for two previous applications in 2005 and 2011 for extra services, buildings and roads. Council will see if there is continued support from the community for these programs or extra programs before applying for 2016/17. Council has adopted a detailed flood study for the Penrith CBD that defines flood behaviour and provides an estimate of flood damages under the current floodplain conditions. The Penrith CBD Detailed Overland Flow Flood Study provides information for a range of flood events, and is the basis for further studies; the Studying and Planning of Floodplain Risk Management that will begin in the 2015/2016 financial year. The management of flood prone land is the responsibility of local government, and thus Council has already applied for grant funding for these further studies from the NSW Government. Council will now provide avenues to communicate with the public and will make the adopted Overland Flow Flood Study available through Council’s website.

Bateman Battersby’s Managing Partner John Bateman expects that Ms Amin will achieve success and satisfaction in her studies for a career in law, and was delighted at the high standard of all applicants.

Brave local family get behind Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month
JADE ALIPRANDI
@jade_aliprandi
t 11-years-old, Alec Campbell, of Kingswood, has set his sights on becoming a surgical vet after his time as a foster carer for animals. Alec was lucky enough to attend the Future Vet Kids Camp in 2014 and, after completing the five days, came to the realisation that he wanted more to do with animals. “I learned about a lot of different animals at camp and it just inspired me to do more, especially to help the ones in need,” Alec said. Through Animal Welfare League NSW, Alec has cared for mums-to-be and has also been around for the birth of two litters of kittens, caring for them up until they were six-weeks-old.

@daledrinkwater
ike most 10-year-old boys would, Riley thinks his mum and cousin look a little bit “weird” with their heads shaved. But to do it, his mum Coralee Brunsden and cousin Raquel Lowe had 3300 small reasons and one very big reason – Riley himself. Riley was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) at just five-weeks-old and, after battling health problems his whole life, he’s endured his toughest year yet. “Riley has been pretty sick this year so I wanted to do something to raise some money for CF. I thought shaving my head was a pretty easy thing to do,” Riley’s cousin, Ms Lowe said. “I raised $3300 and it’s $3300 that CF have now that they didn’t have before, so I’m OK with losing my hair. “I was getting a little bit anxious coming up to it but it’s hair, it grows back, it’s for a good cause.” Ms Lowe challenged Riley’s mum, Ms Brunsden that if over $2000 could be raised for CF then they would both shave their head, and in no time that target was smashed.
L
In Australia, one in 2500 babies are born with cystic fibrosis, that’s one every four days. There is currently no cure for the disease.
“I said if she got to $2000 I would shave my head, and she put it on Facebook and all the friends we have started to donate straight away,” Ms Brunsden said. “We very quickly made the $2000, and on the Saturday night when we shaved our head we raised about $800 alone.” May was Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month and at the Peachtree Hotel on Saturday, May 29, both Ms Lowe and Ms Brunsden lost their locks. It’s been a tough year on everyone in Riley’s family, who have just spent weeks with him in hospital while he got an intravenous therapy line placed in his body. “He’s been a lot sicker this year and he’s just not long come out of hospital. He just had an IV line put in because he had a very severe infection,” Ms Brunsden said. “It’s like a normal line that would go into your veins, but it administers the antibiotics straight down into their lungs rather than taking a little longer to go through the bloodstream.” CF primarily affects the lungs and digestive system because of a malfunction in the exocrine system, responsible for producing saliva, sweat, tears and mucus. There is currently no cure.
“It’s quite an emotional moment when the kittens go back and get adopted out,” Alec said. Unable to attend the 2015 Vet Kids Camp, Alec is focused on caring for his kitten babies in his spare time. “Kittens communicate with their mum by scent, smell and meowing as they don’t open their eyes until they are a few weeks old,” Alec said. “The mum cat picks up her kittens in her mouth if she wants to move them.” Alec’s mum, Kath, said she can’t remember a time when he wasn’t interested in animals. “He’s always loved animals and I think that’s great – I support him 100 per cent,” she said. With an interest in reptiles, mainly snakes, Alec currently has his hands full with his foster cat, Leisel, in his care. “It’s really fun to help out with all the different types of cats too,” he said. “I want to give every animal a chance in life.” Registration for the 2016 Vet Kids Camp will open later in the year with a chance to win a PetSure Scholarship. If your child has a specific interest in animals, like Alec, it could be the perfect opportunity to investigate their passion even more. For more information, visit www.futurevetkidscamp.com.au. our Penrith locals have arrived in Las Vegas to try their luck in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) competition, with an end prize of just over $1 million. Competing against almost 7500 international players, Charlie Challita, Harding Richards, Malcolm Hall and Con Stergidis left for Sin City on Wednesday with the APL/888PL Team WSOP. Beginning today, June 5, the event will run for five days with one person claiming the million dollar prize.
F
“It will be great if I could stay in the game for at least one whole day or even two days,” Mr Stergidis said. “I’m just going to do the best I can and stay in for as long as possible,” Mr Richards added. Mr Stergidis has been waiting several months for his chance to play in the big league after winning his ticket at a tournament in August last year. With the guys playing poker at least twice a week, they are looking forward to hopefully coming out on top in Vegas. “I think work could perhaps be brushed aside for a little while if I won,” Mr Stergidis said.

Youngsters guide future of our city Council offers local students hands-on involvement in creating new park at Colyton DALE DRINKWATER
@daledrinkwater
ennett Road Public School and Colyton Trade High School students have put themselves in Penrith Council’s shoes in designing Colyton’s Barr and Bass Street Park. As part of the Penrith Mayoral Challenge, Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler met with the students last week who brainstormed ideas to upgrade the local park for the entire community. “It’s fantastic to see young people taking leadership and being part of creating something valuable for their neighbourhood,” Cr Fowler said. “[Students] take part in designing enhancements, using a modest budget and promoting the project in their local area. I’m proud to lead this initiative.” Penrith Council said the first of two workshops encouraged students to brainstorm ideas for the design of the park and tackle a range of obstacles such as cost and accessibility. Students went into groups with each group representing a different member of the community, such as the elderly, disabled or a mother with young children, and had to think about how that member
B
Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler with students from Bennett Road Public School and Colyton High Trade School of the community would use the space differently. Students discussed designs around the sizes of pathways and equipment to suit the community, and added them to their own concept map that has now been given to Council’s landscape architect. In the next workshop in July, students will be given the costings of each of their
park designs, and will need to decide what elements will be prioritised and implemented into the park under a budget of $100,000. The project aims to acknowledge young people as civil participants. Cr Fowler said it brings out the students’ qualities as leaders in their community. “The young people, their families and
the school worked together to create a great neighbourhood asset and we are now challenging the young people of Colyton to be leaders,” he said. The project is a part of Penrith’s Neighbourhood Renewal Program, and the success of last year’s project in Callisto Park, Cranebrook, has encouraged Council to develop it into a three year program.

Learning experience will be a tough challenge for Corey JADE ALIPRANDI
@jade_aliprandi
eading off on the trip of a lifetime, 18-year-old Corey Phillpott will test himself as he takes on the task of the Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge this September. Mr Phillpott was lucky enough to be presented with a sponsorship for the program from Penrith RSL and Cash Card last Thursday after his uncle noticed an ad for the sponsorship in the newspaper. The Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge, now in its 11th year, provides a contribution to the community by encouraging young leaders to help motivate their peers to take a positive role in their community. It also educates younger generations about the significance of the 1942 Kokoda campaign in Australian history. Mr Phillpott has started intensive training to ensure he is ready to tackle the 10 day trek. “I’ve been doing a lot of swimming, cardio and a lot of stair work, he said. 49 people will take on the challenge over two treks, one in August and one in September. Mr Phillpott will be hiking from September 19 to September 30 this year. There will be a total of six hikers from the Penrith area over both treks.

Owner and founder of The Cake Pop Queen, Kristie Tracey, said she’s excited to be involved in the show for the second time. “It’s long days out there but the exposure for the business and the fun of it all is well worth it,” she said. “The girls can’t wait to get out there.” With over 30 domestic and international pastry chefs, professional bakers, cake artists and TV personalities, the show will feature 150 live baking demonstrations for visitors to enjoy. The anticipated stand out of the show will be the five metre tall ‘Sydney in Cake’ installation that will feature a walk-in gallery of hanging cake art, an archway resembling an edible Luna Park and other iconic Sydney landmarks. Going into her fourth year in business, Ms Tracey said she first came across the idea of creating a business making cake pops when she saw a cake pop and wanted to know more.

t nine-years-old, Katiya Knoester, of Cranebrook, is reeling in excitement after returning from a trip to Sri Lanka where she volunteered with the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project. Katiya first took on the animal challenge of the Future Vet Kids Camp, run in Waverley, as a way for her to gain knowledge about animals. The camp taught the children how to undertake pet first aid as well as how to perform CPR on a dog, something Katiya says was her favourite part of the camp. Describing herself as “animal crazy”, Katiya says it all started from a TV show. “My animal craze started when I was watching ‘Bondi Vet’ and after a few episodes I told myself that’s what I want to do,” she said.

Working on the hatchery, helping feed and wash the turtles and letting go of the baby turtles at sunset was all in a day’s work for Katiya while in the program. Katiya said her favourite part of the whole trip was to see the birth of baby turtles. “Seeing all the baby turtles erupt from the sand when they were born was a big moment each time,” she said. Not stopping there, Katiya and her friends are currently colouring in pictures to help raise money for Taronga Zoo’s turtle conservation.

Tips to help your start-up business succeed
Michelle Grice // Founder of Shel Design
Michael Todd // Small Biz Connect Advisor Penrith Valley BEC
T
his week I watched the TV show ‘Shark Tank’, as I do every week to see how budding entrepreneurs succeed (or not) in presenting an attractive prospect for the panel of investors. I have been amused (and sometimes shocked) at the number of businesses that seem to lack understanding of the basics of business. I have heard the ‘sharks’ say a number of times “know your numbers”. There are many who come to the presentation with a good grasp of profit, turnover and margin. But there have been too many who give approximate numbers, who don’t understand the financial questions asked of them or who have unrealistic projections on their turnover. Even if you never seek investors, knowing your numbers is essential for understanding how your business can grow. In this week’s show, a business owner was asked if her business name was trademarked. Not only was it not trademarked, it was obvious by her reaction that she
had no idea that this was essential, nor did she know if it was possible to trademark the name. In this case, possibly for a number of reasons, the business name was changed when the investor came on board. But this is an important reminder for everyone in business: registering your business name with ASIC does not protect you from anyone else using the same or similar name. It is imperative that you trademark it. The final area that quite a number of businesses appearing on ‘Shark Tank’ are lacking in, is research. It is one thing to have a great idea, but if you haven’t checked thoroughly for same or similar products and services, your ‘unique’ idea may not have quite the cachet you thought it did! Your research needs to include an analysis of who could easily ‘invade your space’. This doesn’t mean you should squash your idea if an issue is identified. But it does mean you need a contingency or a strategy to combat it. See you next week!

I
often get asked by people looking to start up a business, ‘What factors matter most for start-up businesses to succeed?’ It isn’t an easy answer but there are common factors that do add up and lead to a start-up succeeding. I have always believed that enthusiasm and passion for what you do will lead you to success in all parts of life, but add in the following factors and somewhere in there is a pretty good recipe for start-up success: Timing: I have seen countless businesses kick off with a cracking idea, but the market just wasn’t there at the time. If you can time your launch right when the market wants it, it will set you up perfectly and give you some momentum immediately. Vision: A well-defined vision is a skill or gift that every company leader needs in order to cross the finish line. It will be the major force behind an entrepreneur’s success and will serve as a motivator in tough times. Team and execution: This is an obvious one. Whether you start by yourself or have a team of staff, it is incredibly important that you have the right people.
Also the right people in the right job. The idea itself: A new business needs a market to sell to which generates sales. This doesn’t happen without a good product or service. You need to fulfil a need or want for a big enough market. If you have competitors from the start, make sure you have at least one big point of difference. Business plan: It is not unheard of for a business to start off without a model and still succeed. In today’s world of business it is incredibly hard to plan for what will happen but at least have a one page business plan followed by some solid budgeting and cash flow forecasts. Funding: If you gain traction in your chosen market, funding follows very quickly, as does cash flow. If you require investment, you will need to do a bit more leg work in the form of structure, planning and direction. Speed: Getting things done in a quick manner is one of the many reasons why start-ups are able to achieve what they set out to. It makes a difference when a start-up is able to launch on time or when it’s able to move much faster than competitors.

HISTORY
Turning back Time
A special place in Sydney’s history Dale Drinkwater looks at the remarkable history of the Sydney Society of Model Engineers, and how a 110-year-old organisation found its true home in the Penrith region... F
or almost 110 years, the Sydney Society of Model Engineers (SSME) has been entertaining and educating families across the city, but since the 1970s, it found a permanent home in its best location yet – Luddenham. The SSME is the oldest model engineering club in Australia, and the consistent passion and commitment of its members has made it the “oldest continuously operating model engineering club in the southern hemisphere”, with some reports suggesting even in the world. From 1906, a small number of members would assemble in a home in Summer Hill to deliberate, watch demonstrations and conduct tests on shared and contested engineering ideas for models. The club moved its meetings to a nearby hall where in 1912 they held their first public exhibition of model trains, cars and boats that drew crowds so large on the second night of exhibition that some visitors needed to be turned away. The club’s numbers grew as the design
options that new technologies offered did too, and soon members found themselves seeking bigger premises and kept moving to bigger halls across Sydney. The halls were not big enough for the club’s model trains and boats, and members had to seek further premises across the city to operate them, alternating between a location at Moore Park and other members’ homes. Without their own location, members were forced to seek other avenues to demonstrate their engineering ideas, such as convincing the park superintendent at Centennial Park that testing a model boat in the pond wouldn’t disturb the birds, and resorting to testing a model steam boat off a beach before it was destroyed by the jaws of a shark. From 1927, passionate boat modeller and Wentworth Falls man Albyn Stewart was appointed as the first Patron of the club and served for almost 10 years. Still to this day over 250 of Mr Stewart’s models are held by the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. In 1932, the club found land in Ashfield for just five pounds in rent a year.
At its opening, the club had locomotives and carriages that circled a track around their boat pond. The opening was so successful the club decided to purchase the land to continue their exhibitions and settled at a price of just 95 pounds. From there they continued to meet every Saturday for the next 40 years. In 1935, alongside 2000 visitors, the State Governor officially opened the clubhouse that by then boasted two ponds, a twoand-a-half inch gauge rail track on 4000 sleepers and a boiler that could service up to 12 steam models at one time – facilities that were admired around the modelling world. Over time, the club kept growing and as technology developed, the engineering possibilities did too. Much larger premises were warranted again in the 1960s, and after 10 years of hard work, the club finally sold their Ashfield property and headed west to Luddenham to open a 25 acre model park. In 1970, the property cost just $27,000 with volunteers working tirelessly over the next year to get the park ready for its
opening in October 1971. The park was large enough to provide the space for tether cars, boats, a slot car track, a HO gauge railway, both ground level and elevated rail track and airspace for radio control flying. Since opening its Luddenham premises, the SSME has been home to a range of major events in the modelling world including the Australian Association of Live Steam Convention in 1981, the World Model Race Car Championships in both 1986 and 1998, and then in 2006 it hosted the 50th Live Steam Convention. To this day, the SSME’s tens of acres for their very own model park remains the envy of other model societies, especially as it is open for members to use any day of the year. For the rest of the public, the park is open on the very last Sunday of every month, excluding December, and attracts hundreds of model enthusiasts and families who can ride the trains and play with the slot car track. The SSME has had a long and varied path, but now Luddenham owns this iconic part of Sydney’s history.

Storm warning for Panthers TROY DODDS @troy_dodds
S
omeone really needs to take the ladders and black cats out of the Penrith Panthers dressing room. Last Friday night’s loss to cellar dwellers Parramatta came at a monumental cost with star playmaker Matt Moylan suffering an ankle injury that will see him miss around 10 weeks, while Jamie Soward injured a shoulder and will be forced to play out the rest of the season with the help of painkilling needles. But even before the injuries to Moylan and Soward, everything was going wrong against the Eels last Friday night. To put it bluntly, from the opening whistle it appeared that the Eels had turned up to play and Penrith hadn’t. How the Panthers didn’t turn up given the buzz surrounding this match, the huge crowd and the fact it was a western Sydney
derby is hard to fathom, but it happened. Penrith showed some great determination in patches and had the bounce of the ball gone their way a few times, could have even won the match, but there’s no doubting that it was the Eels who always looked in control. That’s not how a clash between eighth place and last should look or play out and it’d be an obvious concern for coach Ivan Cleary. The one shining light was the performance of Bryce Cartwright, who earned himself a Dally M point in a performance that proved he will be one of Penrith’s most dangerous weapons in the back end of the season. The Panthers somehow maintained their position in the top eight despite last Friday night’s loss but they won’t be so lucky if they fall to the Melbourne Storm on Saturday night at Pepper Stadium. Melbourne are backing up from a tough clash against the Roosters on Monday night and a number of their key players – including Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk – are playing their third match in 10 days, so there’s probably no better time for
PANTHERS V STORM SATURDAY, JUNE 6 • 7.30PM PEPPER STADIUM REFEREES: ADAM DEVCICH AND ALAN SHORTALL TV: FOX SPORTS LIVE 7.30PM RADIO: 2GB LIVE 7.30PM Penrith to meet the formidable Storm. That said, after their worst performance of the season against the Roosters, Melbourne will be looking to make amends. Penrith lacked any serious punch in attack last week, particularly from the forwards, and while Trent Merrin will solve that problem to a degree next year, it’s not a solution to the current issues. Sam McKendry ran for 174 metres against Manly in round 10 but only managed 89 against the Eels.
Nigel Plum clocked up 151 metres against Manly but only 42 against the Eels (albeit from limited game time – 25 minutes against the Eels versus 37 against Manly). The Eels were all over Penrith in defence and with the forwards unable to lay a solid attacking platform, Jamie Soward and Peter Wallace didn’t have enough chances to create something. The Panthers desperately need a better performance from their pack against the Storm on Saturday if they’re to put themselves in a winning position. Adam Docker has been named on an extended bench and while there’s obviously been some issues keeping him out of first grade, Docker’s rampaging style is something Penrith desperately needs. I hope he gets a start. The Panthers welcome back Tyrone Peachey from suspension while Dean Whare finally returns from injury. Both will be fresh from their respective breaks and it could make a big difference against a tired Melbourne at the back end.

» Jamal Idris gave a very frank and open
interview to The Sunday Telegraph last weekend, revealing he may walk away from rugby league as early as this year if the Panthers win a premiership. “If we win a premiership I am done. I am only 24 but I feel old. I am just discovering myself right now. I did not know who I was when I was a teenager. Who does? I see myself as more than a footballer,” Idris told the newspaper. Idris is an extremely talented footballer but a very complicated individual, as Panthers officials have quickly learned. They’re keeping a very close eye on him while he’s recovering from a leg injury and know that his mental state is of high importance during this process.
» There’s still confusion over Assistant
IDRIS COULD QUIT RUGBY LEAGUE
Coach Trent Barrett’s likely switch from the Panthers to Manly. A meeting was scheduled to take place on Monday involving the playing group, where it was expected that Barrett’s departure would be officially announced. The meeting was suddenly cancelled, only adding to the uncertainty surrounding the coaching structure at not only the Panthers, but the Sea Eagles, where Geoff Toovey is said to be on borrowed time.
» The release of this week’s radio ratings
provides an interesting insight into the weekend rugby league audiences. Triple M is still behind 2GB in the ratings, but had a 0.7 per cent increase on weekends in the latest survey. 2GB lost 0.3 per cent of its share on weekends in the survey. The ABC, who signed Andrew Moore to lead its commentary team this year, remained relatively stable. The 2GB and Triple M battle will continue to intensify in the seasons to come. Triple M clearly has the better quality rugby league content across the weekends, but old habits die hard and it’s not surprising to see 2GB still leading the way.
» Talking of radio and Triple M, congratulations to Panthers legend Mark Geyer. He’s part of the Grill Team at breakfast, and they enjoyed a massive two per cent increase in their audience in the survey released on Tuesday. The Grill Team now has 7.8 per cent of the breakfast market, ahead of stations like NOVA, 2UE and the once great 2DAYFM.
» The NRL has finally acted on the very
silly round 13 “backflip” rule, with a 10-day cooling off period to replace it. “I
Jamal Idris watches the Panthers warm up last Friday night think everyone agrees it is unseemly to have months of speculation about whether a player is going to a rival club,” said NRL Head of Football, Todd Greenberg. “Our view is a 10-day cooling off period is an acceptable solution for all involved.”
» Former Panther Jarrod Sammut is on
the hunt for a new club, with confirmation expected in the next week that he’s leaving English club Wakefield.
» Parramatta’s Pauli Pauli somehow
escaped suspension this week after that hit on Jamie Soward last Friday night. He was charged by the NRL’s Match Review Committee, but the grading was so low

that he’ll be able to play in the Eels’ next game. The decision has baffled many of the game’s legends and experts, who say playmakers must be protected.

Protect our playmakers Penrith captain Peter Wallace says it’s time to protect the game’s key players from late tackles after Jamie Soward’s lucky escape last Friday night...
NATHAN TAYLOR natetaylor87
P
enrith captain Peter Wallace has called on the NRL to put a stop to cheap shots in the game after his chief playmaker Jamie Soward was a victim of one last Friday night. Soward was taken out late by Parramatta prop Pauli Pauli during the second half of Penrith’s loss to the Eels. Soward was forced to leave the field in what was a crucial period for the Panthers but would later return, albeit in a considerable amount of pain. Pauli, who was cited for the illegal hit, was free to play on while the Panthers were down their most important man for the next 10 minutes. Speaking with the media on Monday, Wallace said something needed to be done to protect players from late hits. “Tougher penalties – whether that be send offs on the field or tougher suspensions – I don’t know,” he said. “If you’re taking the ball to the line you expect to get hit but he (Soward) was a few metres off the line and was still hit late. It’s the really late hits, when you don’t have the ball and you’re really relaxed, that the NRL need to look at. “The worst thing is we lost a player and nothing happened to them.
Peter Wallace in action last Friday
“He got put on report, that was it. It was pretty unfair.” Pauli was charged with Grade 1 Dangerous Contact by the Match Review Committee, but escaped suspension with an early guilty plea. Meanwhile, Wallace has welcomed the news that Dallin Watene-Zelezniak will replace the injured Matt Moylan at fullback. “They are two different players but Dallin is skilful enough and his running game is great... I don’t think it’ll change the way we play too much,” Wallace said. “I think we’ve had two games this whole year with our 7, 6, 9 and 1 on the field together. “It’s not ideal but something we’ll have to deal with.” In other news, Wallace made a successful return last Friday night after spending the past seven weeks recovering from minor knee surgery. Wallace was due to return during Penrith’s Round 10 match against Manly but was a late withdrawal due to the sad passing of his mother, Dianne. The 29-year-old said the last few weeks had been tough on him personally. “I’m alright... it’s been a tough couple of weeks but I’m alright,” he said. “The club has been really good. I can’t thank them enough for how they supported me.”
Moylan out but Soward right to play on Saturday
Matt Moylan is assisted by trainers last Friday. Photo: Melinda Jane
PENRITH have been dealt a massive injury blow with fullback Matt Moylan ruled out for at least the next 10 weeks. Moylan tore ligaments in his ankle in the 11th minute of last Friday night’s loss to Parramatta at Pepper Stadium. It’s a huge blow for the 24-year-old, who was celebrating his 50th NRL appearance in the game. Moylan was assisted from the field by trainers and watched the rest of the clash from the sidelines.
Meanwhile, five-eighth Jamie Soward suffered an AC joint injury in his right shoulder after being hit in a late tackle by Parramatta’s Pauli Pauli. After initial reports suggested that Soward could be facing another extended stint on the sidelines, the playmaker revealed on Twitter on Tuesday that he had been given the all clear to play Melbourne on Saturday. Pauli was charged over the incident but escaped suspension.

LOVERS OF RUGBY LEAGUE WILL BE TREATED TO UNPARALLELED COVERAGE WITH FOX SPORTS SHOWCASING EVERY MATCH, INCLUDING UP TO FIVE LIVE GAMES EACH ROUND PLUS A NEW EXTENDED LINE-UP OF ENTERTAINMENT SHOWS FROM MONDAY TO THURSDAY.
THE ROUND 13 FARCE IS OVER inally the ridiculous Round 13 deadline, which allows players to backflip on a signed contract, looks set to be buried. Head of Football Todd Greenberg said: “Fans and clubs were frustrated with the ‘Round 13 rule’ because it can create uncertainty and speculation a long time after a contract has been signed”. Sure the players across the game still have to agree on it yet but surely they will? It’s been a real blight on the game and has never made sense. I mean what’s the point of signing a contract if you can then renege on it months after the deal is done? The only group that might be sad to see it go are the player managers who have used it to hold clubs to ransom. We can thank the Daly Cherry-Evans circus for forcing the rule change. Thank God we will never see such a farce again. Under the proposed changes there will be a 10 business days ‘cooling off period’. The new rule also says the club signing

the player can not announce it until after the 10 day ‘cooling off period’ has expired. That certainly won’t stop the news leaking that a star player has signed elsewhere but it’s a major improvement. Player managers will, of course, still try and use the 10 days to play clubs off against each other. Players also won’t be allowed to negotiate with rival clubs under the new rule until the final year of their current contract. So all in all it’s a welcome change but still it probably doesn’t go all the way and completely fix the problem. The game needs a totally fresh approach to its player transfer system. Most major professional sports around the world use a transfer window and a draft, so why not the NRL? The good news is that new head of strategy Shane Richardson will look at a draft as part of his blueprint for the game after the next broadcast deal in 2018. For now let’s be grateful that a much needed change has come and not before time. Rest In Peace Round 13 deadline.

DIPLOMA OF SPORT DEVELOPMENT enrith Panthers, in collaboration with FC11 and Sydney TAFE, have been running the Diploma of Sport Development program in 2015. Currently 38 students study and train at our Panthers Education and High Performance Training Facilities located at Pepper Stadium and at the purpose built facility next to Penrith Panthers Leagues Club. The program merges sports science, coaching methodology, high performance training, professional and academic development, business theory, and mentoring by professional athletes and coaches. Members of the Panthers’ coaching staff and support staff, including myself, work with FC11 lecturers and course coordinators to provide tutorials and assistance in training sessions and other activities.

PANTHERS PROVE THEY’RE THE BEST IN THE WEST WITH HUGE WIN OVER ARCH RIVALS
BATTLE OF THE WEST GOES BUSH AS PANTHERS GO TO THE TOP AFTER LATE WIN
Not that they didn’t already know it but Penrith are officially the best team out west after a thumping 36-12 defeat of the Parramatta Eels last Friday night. The second last placed Eels were no contest for the top of the table Panthers, who incredibly led 32-0 with just five minutes remaining. After some great attacking raids by the Eels early, which resulted in no points, it was the Panthers who got on the board first after 16 minutes through young PNG sensation Stanton Albert. Penrith were in once again 10 minutes later when winger Fuimanu Enese scored after taking a great ball from Dylan Edwards. Corey Harawira’s conversion fell wide of the posts, which kept the Panthers up 10-0. Penrith’s next try followed after lock Tyrone May played the ball short to Maliko Filino, who was too strong for Parramatta’s defence and barrelled over. A top conversion by Harawira from the sideline put the Panthers up 16-0. But Penrith weren’t done toying with their prey just yet, with five-eighth Dylan Edwards showing off his great running game to go over and score just before halftime. Edwards converted his own try to put
The defending premiers looked set to suffer their second consecutive boilover in as many rounds, before Penrith scored nine points in the final three minutes of the game to record a remarkable 31-24 win over Manly at Brookvale Oval. Both teams scored five tries but Will Smith’s five goals from six attempts, including three from the sideline, proved to be the difference. Late changes to Penrith’s line-up were minimal, with fullback Kieran Moss, out injured since Round 1 a late call-up, replacing centre Robert Jennings in a reshuffled backline. The opening 25 minutes gave little indication of being the thrilling contest this game was, as both sides played poorly. Penrith’s failure to complete their sets was offset by Manly’s inability to ask questions of the competition’s best defence despite having dominated possession and territory. However, once both sides began to play expansive footy, the points followed. Manly scored first through Delroy Berryman before Penrith’s passes began to stick and they scored three unanswered tries through Eddie Aiono (two) and Tom Eisenhuth with Penrith’s halves Isaac John and Adrian Davis instrumental in all
Penrith celebrate a try the Panthers up 22-0 at the break. It took Penrith 10 minutes into the second half before they got their fifth try of the evening with big prop Moses Leota surging through the defensive wall to score. 11 minutes later Filino scored his second try of the evening after catching the perfect pass from winger Christian Crichton. Edwards missed the conversion but the Panthers already had a very healthy lead at 32-0. Just when it looked like Penrith would hold the Eels scoreless, the visitors finally had some luck, scoring twice in the final five minutes of the game. Penrith also bagged a try in the dying moments through Thompson Tuigimala, just to add salt into Parramatta’s wounds.
three, enabling the Panthers to lead 16-4 at half-time. Manly dominated possession early in the second half and levelled the scores with tries to Ben Fritz (two) and ex-Panther Tony Satini. The lead changed hands twice more through tries to Aiono (Penrith) and Michael Chee Kam (Manly) before Manly conceded a penalty 10m out, directly in front that allowed Will Smith to level the scores for the Panthers with three minutes remaining. Tupou Sopoaga’s 25m field goal in the next set broke Manly’s hearts, before Penrith’s win was sealed when Chris Smith broke clear from the short kick-off before finding Aiono to score his fourth try of the game. Round 13 is Country Round, which sees this Saturday’s Penrith’s home game against nearest rivals, Wentworthville Magpies, transferred to Port Macquarie Regional Stadium with a 6pm kick-off. Wentworthville have named a strong team that includes the likes of Adam Quinlan, John Folau, Vai Toutai, Luke Kelly and Joseph Paulo, as they look to avenge their recent 16-4 loss to Penrith. Penrith have lost Adam Docker, who is 18th man in the NRL.

Come and say G’day KATE REID @kate_reid6
I
nterviewing Paul Hogan is sort of like having a chat to a stranger at the local pub. There’s no ego, no drama and no hint that you’re talking to a man who created the most successful Australian movie of all time. Starting out as rigger on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Hogan got his break after appearing, just as a bit of a laugh, on Aussie talent show ‘New Faces’. The exposure led to his own sketch
comedy program ‘The Paul Hogan Show’ and ultimately to the film that made him famous worldwide, ‘Crocodile Dundee’. “I gave him all the Australian charms that we don’t even know we have,” Hogan said of the much loved character Mick Dundee. “There’s a sort of honesty and an openness and a refusal to take anything seriously that’s a national characteristic. “I think people identify with the character, a simple guy who’s confronting sophisticated civilisation and coming out on top of it.” Hogan’s description of Dundee draws close parallel to his own life. There was never any dreams of Hollywood stardom,
just a chance discovery that his sense of humour was shared by countless others. “I’ve always found the world to be a funny place, well the people in it anyway,” he said. “I see things that I think are funny and then you write it down or you tell other people and if they laugh you’re a comedy writer, if they look at you strange you’re just a weird nut. “It worked out well for me, I’m not a weird nut.” Local audiences will have the chance to experience Hogan up close and personal when he visits the Evan Theatre on Saturday, June 20 for ‘Hoges Live’, an evening of stand-up and stories from his life. For over two hours Hogan will share all the funny and surreal moments from his time on Australian TV screens to his promotion of Australia to audiences around the world. The idea for the live show, which had its first tour in 2013, came from friend and director Dean Murphy. “He had a lot of calls from theatre people saying that they would like me to come and do my thing,” Hogan said. “I was always talking about writing the book about the extraordinary life I’ve led and I thought better to go and talk about it and show pictures that go with it. “So that was the plan and it’s worked out wonderfully. “No one’s ever gone home at interval so that’s a good sign,” he laughed. When it comes to the film industry Hogan admits that he probably won’t be making any more movies anytime soon. After starting out his career with a smash hit like ‘Crocodile Dundee’, he doesn’t feel there’s anywhere else to go. “If your very first movie you have a go at, a little band of sort of amateurs make a movie and it gets number one around the world... you can’t top that,” Hogan said. “So you just sort of go ‘Oh well, OK, I’ll just cruise downhill now’. “I always thought of myself primarily as a comedy writer and not an actor anyway, so I had no great desire to act in other films.” Adding to his list of surreal life experiences was Hogan’s role as co-host for the Academy Awards in 1986 where, in typical laidback Aussie fashion, he opened the night without a script. What followed was an Oscars speech that still sits up there with the best of them. At one point he suggested to nominees that if they didn’t really want their award just to give a wave from their seat and the award would be passed on to someone else. “I was looking at the Oscars from an audience’s point of view,” he said. It’s a sentiment that seems to sum up Hogan’s life, a relatable character and unlikely star that just happened to stumble into the spotlight. The brilliance of what he did for Australia and the Australian film industry is that he never set out to do any of it. “That’s why my story’s worth telling, it’s just a lot of extraordinary coincidences and a lot of luck and a lot of the right thing at the right time,” he said. Paul Hogan will be performing at the Evan Theatre on Saturday, June 20. Tickets are $85.90. For more information or to purchase tickets visit www.penrith. panthers.com.au or call 1800 061 991.

Ê Walkley Award winning news reporter Adam Walters has quit ‘Seven News’ to join ‘Ten Eyewitness News’ as a senior reporter. Walters has covered some huge stories for Seven during his time including the murder of Anita Cobby, the Newcastle earthquake, the Ivan Milat murders and the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. Walters takes up his new role in July. Ê The loveable Humphrey B. Bear turned 50 last week, yes 50, but there’s now talk he may make a permanent return to television in the not too distant future. Humphrey’s TV program ‘Here’s Humphrey’ ended back in 2008 and he’s been rarely seen on the box since, apart from the odd ‘Carols by Candlelight’ appearance. But now Imagination Entertainment is exploring a new series, and a possible movie, including the idea of voicing Humphrey! “We have talked with two separate Australian Hollywood A-list actors who have put their hands up to be the voice of their childhood icon,” Imagination Chief Executive, Shane Yeend said.

The Witcher 3
Rated M // Troy DODDS There is much to love about ‘The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’, an open world experience that features plenty of action, just a little bit of sex and romance and a storyline that keeps you intrigued throughout. Some have criticised ‘The Witcher 3’ for its main story, suggesting it is too project driven with not enough action and combat. I can see where the argument came from but personally, the main story kept me pretty engaged from the word go. ‘The Witcher 3’ concludes the story of witcher Geralt of Rivia, but take note that you don’t need to have played the previous games to enjoy this one. Geralt is seeking to move on in

life, and embarks on a new personal mission at a time when the world is a dark, confused and bloody place. Geralt must stop the prevalence of the Wild Hunt, which is leaving nothing but blood and destruction in its path. The unique thing about this game is that the decisions and choices you make have a huge influence on the outcome of not only the current moment, but later in the game. It’s important to read instructions and dialogue carefully, and choose options wisely. A little long, ‘The Witcher 3’ is at its best when you’re enjoying the large and very fun open world.

Florence and the Machine
How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful // KATE REID It’s been four years between releases for Florence and the Machine but the new album ‘How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful’ shows the band haven’t lost any musical momentum. It’s not hard to see where the title came from, the tracks on the album are bold and bolstered by the phenomenal vocals of lead singer Florence Welch. First single ‘What Kind of Man’ showcases her strength for combining the delicate with the powerful. Other stand out tracks on the album include ‘Delilah’, which contrasts heavy lyrics with an upbeat sound, and the subtle yet beautiful ‘St Jude’. Lyrically there’s a lot of pain on this album but this darkness combined with the beauty and power of Florence’s voice, is exactly what makes for a top CD.

In the third instalment of the ‘Taken’ franchise Liam Neeson’s ex-government operative character Bryan Mills is the one on the run after he’s framed for the murder of ex wife Lenore (Famke Janssen). Mills attempts to track down the real killer and keep his daughter safe while the law, including Detective Frank Dotzler (Forest Whitaker), sets out to bring him in for questioning.

‘Taken 3’ is the perfect example of the pitfalls of action movie franchises. The premise has worn so thin on these movies, even Neeson seems bored with it. While the first film was fresh and different this one just feels old and tired. In an attempt to keep things interesting, the film features some pretty ridiculous stunts, like driving a police car backwards down an elevator shaft,
which just helps to demonstrate how desperate the writers were to keep audiences engaged. The skills of actors like Neeson and Whitaker are wasted on what is essentially a very average action flick. Let’s hope the movie’s tagline ‘it ends here’ is a promise.

A
fter living in England in the early 1980s and on their travels realising that some of the best wines in Europe came from cooler regions with impoverished soils, Rita and Bob Richter came back to Australia with their sights set on making similar top drops. It meant a Graduate Diploma Course in Wine at Roseworthy Agricultural College for Bob, and then heading south to cool-climate Tasmania to choose a vineyard site with low fertility soil, in 1989 finding exactly what they were searching for at Glengarry that overlooks the Tamar Valley 30 minutes’ drive north-west of Launceston. Simply fine grey sand over a hardpan and finally deeper good clay that vines’ deep roots love once they get there, Rita and Bob snapped it up, planted it to some dozen or so grape varieties and called it Grey Sands. And one variety really loving its seemingly tough conditions is Pinot Gris, with a just-released 2013, a smashing drop of lush ripe-peach fruit flavours, spicy aromatics and wonderfully balanced acidity. The Richter’s deliberately don’t irrigate their Grey Sands Vineyard, so as to get maximum flavour concentration rather than maximum yield; do yourself a favour and at $40 partner their 2013 Pinot Gris with roast pork belly, loads of crackling and baked vegies. Available at their Cellar Door or info@greysands. com.au.

nh Do has captivated readers with his best-selling memoir that details his fascinating journey from refugee to one of Australia’s most loved comedians. This June, Anh will bring his story to the Evan Theatre stage with a new stand-up show that combines real life stories, film and photos to bring his memoir to life. Anh’s journey to Australia in 1980 involved an eight metre fishing boat crowded with 47 other Vietnamese refugees. Life in Australia wasn’t easy for young Anh, who struggled with his parents’ divorce, bullying, learning English and dealing with poverty. While there was plenty of down times, Anh’s story is one of triumph, starting off as a young refugee in a strange country and going on to become a lawyer and talented comedian, writer, actor and producer. The Happiest Refugee: A Memoir has achieved sales in excess of 350,000 and was awarded Book of the Year in 2011. The book has gained much praise from notable figures including actor Russell
Crowe, who described it as “the most surprising and inspiring read I have had in years”. The pair are currently working on plans for a film adaptation of the novel. Anh’s is an inspiring and fascinating story that shows the human side of life as a refugee. This is sure to be a popular show so grab your tickets now! Anh Do, The Happiest Refugee – Live will be on at the Evan Theatre on Saturday, June 13 at 8pm. Tickets are $50.55. The show is for ages 15 and up, under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult. Reid NUTRITION
Over the years I’ve noticed that as a society our relationship with food has become very much about extremes. We’re either on a diet of some description or over-consuming unhealthy foods. For many of us it seems to have become harder to find a healthy middle ground. It’s no wonder really when we’re looking at the messages that we get around food consumption. We’re either being told about some amazing new fad diet or marketed to with horrifying new junk food creations (I’m looking at you pizza

with meat pie stuffed crusts!) Unfortunately the moderation message just isn’t as exciting as the promise of losing five kilos in a week. But I think it’s well and truly time we reclaim the idea of balance, because after all if diets actually worked we wouldn’t need to keep going on them. Instead of this all or nothing approach, we need to shift our focus to making small, sustainable changes.
A great place to start is with fruits and vegetables. Though they’re the cornerstone of a healthy diet as a nation our current intake is pretty poor with only 5.5 per cent of Australian adults meeting the guidelines for daily fruit and vegetable intake, which is two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables per day. To make sustainable changes start by looking at your current consumption and set yourself a goal of increasing your daily fruit and vegetable intake by small amounts, say one serve each week, which equates to approximately half a cup of cooked vegetables, one cup of salad or a medium piece of fruit. Focus on fruits and vegetables that you enjoy eating (food should be about pleasure as well as health) and aim for as many different colours as possible to ensure you’re consuming a range of vitamins and minerals. Working up to the guidelines over a few weeks is a much more sustainable way to make changes to your diet rather than setting yourself an unrealistic goal and giving up by day three. When it comes to eating, extremes are never the answer. So ditch the fad diets and instead make small, sustainable steps towards long term change.

PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
When it comes to a complicated family issue, it’s been one step forwards and two steps back. Get ready to take a giant leap forwards later in the week, as Mercury starts moving things in a positive new direction. So don’t waste precious time procrastinating Pisces! Strive to be 100 per cent honest with family and friends.
There is a common story I hear, someone will join a gym, start an all-out fitness kick and go flat out twice a day for a week or so but by the third week are doing less than they ever have. I think it’s important to be realistic about your goals and new commitments. It’s been said before ‘the best way to get someone to do something is make them want to do it’. The same is true for your fitness program. I’ve seen people force themselves onto a treadmill at 6am in the morning be-
Enjoying your exercise is a must!
owner and manager of Fitec david@fitec.com.au
cause they feel they have to exercise, then they say ‘I just don’t like exercise’. What they don’t like is looking at the treadmill clock ticking down running on the spot for an hour. Why not go for an outdoor run somewhere they would enjoy? Organise a game of tennis, go trampolining. There are a hundred ways to get active.
The other important thing is you have to work up to it, at first your new resolve to get fit is very fragile, even though you’re feeling positive this time you’re going to do it! It has no habit behind it, you might have bad associations to exercise already, you have already failed before and maybe others around you are not very encouraging because it draws attention to their own lack of activity. Then you get sore from doing too much. It’s very easy to lose that initial resolve. You have to be very careful to keep it alive then get it growing. Compare it to making a campfire. You don’t light a match then put a few telegraph poles on top of it. Then say ‘see, I can’t make campfires’. You have to feed it appropriately, with small easy things to burn, that get the flame even bigger. Only when it’s ready each time do you put a bit more on. Same for exercise. Guide yourself by how you feel, better to do something you like and increase it when you feel ready. If you actually look forward to your next session, whatever it is, you’re going well. Think of it as a long term enjoyable change.
McMillan PET HEALTH
Can you give a kitten a new ‘forever home’ this winter?
Practice owner of Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic and the Western Sydney Cat Hospital
ping, flea treatment, worming as well as being desexed. We usually have about 10 cats available at any one time that we care for until we are able to find them forever homes. Before deciding to adopt a kitten, make sure that a cat will suit your lifestyle. Cats are wonderful pets
that are very intelligent and playful. They are generally less active than dogs and enjoy sleeping for a large portion of the day. They do not usually need or even tolerate walks and are well suited to a family with a less active lifestyle. Cats can be happily kept indoors when provided with litter trays. This is generally advisable especially if you live near busy roads. Keeping cats indoors avoids injuries such as dog attacks, motor vehicle accidents and also avoids cats hunting our precious wildlife. If you are interested in getting a new beautiful kitten, please contact us on 4731 3055. We currently have 10 beautiful kittens available for adoption.

Lavender RELIGION
On TV recently was the classic 1959 black and white movie, ‘On the Beach’. If you didn’t already know, ‘On the Beach’ is the story from Neville Shute’s 1957 book about a nuclear war in the Northern Hemisphere which wipes out the whole world. Throughout the story we see a cloud of poisonous radiation gradually making its way further and further south to the people of Melbourne where the story is set. It is basically a story about people waiting to die.
If you believe, there is much more to life
www.glenmorepark anglican.com.au and on Facebook
It is a very depressing story, because the people have no hope. They are just waiting to die. The end. Full stop, no more! While the movie is a classic, it was nominated for two Academy Awards, it left you, as the viewer feeling quite hopeless. Hopeless in the sense that the people had no belief in anything beyond this world
and when this world ended they just died! Finish! What a difference there is for a Christian – someone who has put their hope and trust in Jesus! In the Bible’s book of Ephesians we see the writer of the book, the Apostle Paul, praying for his readers, asking that God will help them know more and more, “the hope to which God has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance”. Christian people have a real, confident hope. You can know God’s grace, love, mercy, forgiveness and kindness! You can have the real, certain hope of new life with God! You can have the real hope of looking forward to God’s glorious inheritance, the promise of heaven. You don’t ever need to live a hopeless existence as the people in ‘On the Beach’ – there is more to life!

TOYOTA
More features, same great price
oyota has boosted the value for money of its Aurion family-car line-up by holding prices while increasing safety, sophistication, style and driver involvement. A 200kW sports version, with 18-inch wheels for the first time on an Aurion, headlines a raft of changes that deliver higher specifications across Toyota’s large-car range. Distinctive styling updates and new features provide clear differentiation between the award-winning Aurion AT-X, dynamic Sportivo and top-of-the-line Presara. Standard new features across the range include keyless entry and ignition, a 4.2-inch full-colour multi-information display, Toyota Link connected mobility and clearance sonars front and rear. Luxury Presara introduces the advanced safety of lane departure alert and rear cross-traffic alert as well as LED headlamps and foglamps. Aurion Sportivo stands out with its gloss-black five-spoke rims, low-profile tyres, firmer suspension, more involving steering set-up and a redesigned body kit that is stylish yet understated. Prices are unchanged for the AT-X ($36,490) and Sportivo ($40,990) while Presara ($50,440) now reflects the standard inclusion of metallic or pearlescent paint.

You can trust Mobile One with your pride and joy onesty and reliability are two traits hard to find in a business these days but you can expect all that and more from the team at Mobile One Auto Repairs. Located at Forrester Road in St Marys, Mobile One Auto Repairs has been in business for an amazing 18 years, and has the reputation to go along with it. “We’ve been here for a long time and have a very loyal customer base,” co-owner Debbie Bartolo said. Mobile One Auto Repairs offers a range of high quality services including general mechanical repairs such as brakes, lubes, exhausts and tuneups, plus registration checks and log book servicing without losing your new car warranty.
www.arbpenrith.com.au
They offer a limited pick up and drop off service, are flexible with appointments and very competitive with their prices. But perhaps the best aspect of Mobile One Auto Repairs is their incredible customer service ethic. No longer will you leave the mechanic not knowing what repair work your pride and joy has undertaken and why. “If a part is no longer working we’ll show the customer what is wrong with it and they are even welcome to take the part home,” Debbie said. “We try and educate customers because there’s nothing worse than not knowing what you’ve paid for.” Mobile One Auto Repairs is located at 6/176 Forrester Road, St Marys. T
Norm’s the man to take girls forward Norm Boardman has extended his deal with the Wanderers’ W-League side
@natetaylor87
he Western Sydney Wanderers have announced that Norm Boardman will continue as coach of the club’s W-League side next
season. Being in charge of a very young team last season with 13 new members, Boardman exceeded all expectations in breaking a number of records and milestones along the way. A first ever Sydney Derby win as well as an away win in Brisbane hailed in some media outlets as “the biggest upset in W-League history” were the two biggest highlights in a season that saw the Wanderers play an entertaining style of football. A 66 per cent increase in home crowds as well as a W-League record crowd of 3084 was a testament to the style of football being played. In terms of player registrations, women’s football in western Sydney has grown 40 per cent since the Wanderers started as a club and having an elite team in the region is a big part of that growth. It is this growth that Boardman wants to help accelerate using the Wanderers as a vehicle. “The impact the Wanderers have on western Sydney is phenomenal,” Boardman said. “Women’s football is growing so much and I’m excited as we’re not just going to be concentrating on the squad, we’ll be taking an approach to continue the growth of women’s football in the region.” With a full off-season to recruit and prepare for the 2015/16 W-League season, the future looks bright for the Wanderers to continue building on the positives of last year. “We need to build on our foundations from last season, we had some good performances and it’s now about improving on that,” Boardman said. “We have some time to plan and prepare for a big challenge. We’ll have a look at the progression of our players from last year and look to bring in some new talent both overseas and locally.”
Wanderers start to build for new season The Wanderers have signed fullback and western Sydney local Scott Jamieson until the end of the 2016/17 season as well as securing defender Jonathan Aspropotamitis to a first team contract to see his continued development at the Club. Jamieson is a valuable addition to the Wanderers roster as the 26-yearold comes off a highly impressive individual season with Perth Glory. The Auburn native will return to play in western Sydney for the first time since playing for his junior club Blacktown City in 2005. Since then the 2008/09 Young Footballer of the Year has featured both abroad and domestically, seeing time at Bolton Wanderers, Adelaide United, Sydney FC and Perth Glory. Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas has welcomed the addition of the four time Socceroo. “We’re bringing another western Sydney international home,” said Tsatsimas. “The Wanderers aim to inspire and provide a pathway for the youth of western Sydney and having another one of our own in the first-team helps show them what is possible. “Scott has had a stand-out season at Perth Glory and we’re delighted to have him on board. He can play anywhere on the left flank and will add strength to our defensive and attacking stocks.” Aspropotamitis made his first team debut in Round 10 against Melbourne City and followed that up with further assured displays in the centre of defence. A total of nine appearances in red and black saw ‘Aspro’ win fans over with his mature performances and was enough to earn his first senior contract from Tony Popovic.

Giants to welcome back injured stars RHYS Palmer has overcome a long lay off from a shoulder injury to be available for selection this week for the GWS Giants. Palmer, Liam Sumner and Jacob Townsend have all returned to full training and could line up for the Giants in either the AFL or the NEAFL on Sunday. Palmer injured his shoulder in his 100th AFL game on ANZAC Day in round four while Sumner (foot and wrist) and Townsend (foot) will play for the first time this season. Lachie Plowman (elbow – two weeks), Adam Tomlinson (toe – seven weeks), Jonny Patton (knee – TBC) and Tim Mohr (knee – TBC) are the only other Giants on the injury list. Tim Mohr has also begun his rehabilitation from his second knee reconstruction after a successful surgery last week. The Giants play Brisbane on Sunday at 1.10pm at Spotless Stadium while the UWS Giants play the Brisbane Lions reserves as a curtain-raiser at 9.30am. The Giants’ good start to the season was halted last weekend when they were downed convincingly by the Western Bulldogs. Despite the 113-68 defeat, the Giants still sit in fifth place on the AFL ladder.

Australia calls for Tahlia as local basketball sensation earns World Championships spot NATHAN TAYLOR
@natetaylor87
enrith basketball sensation Tahlia Tupaea will be back in her favourite colours of green and gold next month after she won selection in the Australian Gems U19 women’s team. The talented Glenmore Park resident, who is one of just two NSW players selected in the team, will head to Russia to compete in the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championships from July 18-26. While Tupaea’s selection is a huge boost going forward in her individual career, it will leave her Penrith Panthers Waratah Championship League (WCL) teammates without their best player for the back-end of the season including the playoffs. Tupaea is currently averaging 21.8 points per game for the Panthers in the WCL. “I’m excited with the size and athleticism of the group as well as the experience from girls who were at the U17 and U19 World Championships,” Australian head coach, Paul Goriss said. The Gems will leave the country on July 3 to play two games against The Netherlands in Amsterdam as well as participate in a short training camp.

Making a splash in the swimming world She’s almost 70 but Carol Prain doesn’t see an end in sight to her work with local swimmers NATHAN TAYLOR
@natetaylor87
ambridge Park resident Carol Prain was rewarded for her three decade involvement in local swimming last week by receiving the highest award available to a nonservice member of the RSL. The 68-year-old was presented with the RSL Certificate of Merit and Gold Badge for 30 years continuous service to Penrith RSL Swimming – the last 11 years as State President of RSL Swimming NSW. The award is the highest award available to a non-service member of the RSL and was presented to Ms Prain by the Governor of NSW, General David Hurley, during the opening of the RSL NSW State Congress at Coffs Harbour. “I was extremely honoured and very proud, not only for myself but on behalf of our swimming club,” Ms Prain said. “I’ve always loved the club, it’s where my children first started swimming and I’ve been a part of it ever since.” While Ms Prain prefers to jump in her own pool these days as opposed to a public one, she is still very much involved in the development of the sport locally. “As president, I oversee the running

of the club, making sure everything is in order like it should be,” she said. “I’m also a delegate to Zone 4, which Penrith RSL Swimming is a part of, where I hold the position as treasurer. “I don’t get in the pool these days, just socially at home. It’s nice to stand at poolside and watch the young ones swim.” Along with her service and dedication to RSL Swimming, Ms Prain served as a Director on the Board of Penrith RSL Club for 10 years up until 2014. While swimming is currently on recess during the winter months, it all starts back up again in October, where Ms Prain is hoping for a big summer ahead. “Swimming goes through waves,” she said. “Most swimming clubs go through downturns as far as members are concerned but what I’ve actually enjoyed seeing is parents who swam with our club when they were young returning with their children. “The cycle continues and that’s great to see.” Nearing on 70 years of age, Ms Prain doesn’t see an end to her service to swimming in sight and will continue to dedicate her spare time to the sport for as long as she can.

Trevor’s always a Penrith boy at heart Penrith’s Trevor Bayliss takes on England coaching job, but do we really want him to win the Ashes? NATHAN TAYLOR
@natetaylor87
enrith Cricket Club President Paul Goldsmith believes old friend and former teammate Trevor Bayliss is the perfect man to lead the English cricket team into a new era. The 52-year-old was officially announced as the new head coach of England last week, with his first major assignment being to win back the Ashes from Australia in one month’s time. While Bayliss is better known for his decorated coaching career – which has included successful stints with Sri Lanka, Australia (T20), NSW and the Sydney Sixers – he began his playing career as a member of the Penrith Cricket Club back in the 1980s. “Trevor came to Penrith from Goulburn as a young bloke in the early 80s and spent his entire senior playing career here,” Goldsmith told the Weekender. “He retired from Penrith as a player in 2000 after spending nearly 20 years at the club. His association with Penrith continues with his son Adam playing and he’s also a life member.” During Bayliss’ near two decade career at Penrith, he scored more than 5000 runs
P
New English cricket coach and Penrith resident Trevor Bayliss coaching NSW and represented NSW on an impressive 58 occasions. Goldsmith recalled being captained by Bayliss when he joined the Penrith Cricket Club back in 1991. “In all my time at Penrith Trevor was captain of the first grade team, and I’ve known him for nearly 25 years,” he said. “Trevor was a fantastic captain and that’s evident now in his coaching.
“He has a great understanding of the game and is able to read the game very well. “Trevor isn’t someone who bangs on the table and shouts a lot, unless he absolutely has to. He always had a very calm demeanour and what he says is usually very succinct but direct.” Despite his various high profile coaching roles, both domestically and overseas,
Bayliss still resides with his family in the Penrith area. He was recently a surprise guest at Penrith Cricket Club’s Presentation Night, handing out an award named in his honour. “Trevor attended our Presentation Night a fortnight ago, presenting the Trevor Bayliss Batting Award,” Goldsmith said. “Trevor’s very much still around the club when he is home and often pops down to Howell Oval because his son Adam Bayliss plays in our third grade team.” While Bayliss has guided Sri Lanka to a World Cup Final in 2011 and won numerous titles with NSW, the Sydney Sixers and the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League, his biggest task will be restoring pride and passion back into the English cricket team. “This new role is a fantastic credit to Trevor and reflects a lot of the successes he’s had in his coaching career to date,” Goldsmith said. Goldsmith is convinced Bayliss will make a big impact. “He will no doubt bring a new perspective to the English setup,” he said. “I don’t wish him too much luck next month with the Ashes on,” Goldsmith joked.

240 minutes without a point With seven games to go, will the Penrith Emus win a single match this season? NATHAN TAYLOR
@natetaylor87
espite finishing their third straight game with a big fat zero next to their name, Penrith Emus coach Sateki Tu’ipulotu said he was proud of his team during last Saturday’s 65-0 loss to Eastern Suburbs. While many coaches would be devastated to be held to nil for the third week in a row, Tu’ipulotu was rather upbeat about his team’s performance. “We had about four or five scoring opportunities, we were in their ‘red zone’ but we just didn’t execute the plays. We dropped the ball or the last pass didn’t find the mark,” Tu’ipulotu said. “I’m not disappointed, it’s a work in progress for a lot of these guys. I’ve just got to look at preparing for season 2016.” The Emus haven’t score a point in more than 240 minutes of rugby. While Tu’ipulotu admits he wasn’t too disappointed with the result last week, he is frustrated all the efforts put into training throughout the week aren’t replicated in games. He believes his side lacks the mental toughness to stay in matches.
D
“It’s very frustrating because the boys put in the effort on a Tuesday night then on Saturday they compete for about 40 to 60 minutes before they drop off,” he said. “If we had those quick tries earlier in the game the confidence lifts, but unfortunately if it doesn’t, it goes the other way.” The Shute Shield competition will take this weekend off, due to the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend, and resume with Round 12 next Saturday. Tu’ipulotu said his side will have minimal rest during the forced break with training sessions set to be more intense than ever. “They’ll be working hard this week, they’ll get a bit of a flogging at training,” he said. “The bye has come at a good time because it will refresh the players’ minds with seven more games remaining.” The Emus will return next Saturday afternoon with a match against West Harbour at Nepean Rugby Park. Tu’ipulotu said he still hasn’t given up on winning a game this season. “We just need to improve and see if we can snatch a win,” he said. “We need to be well prepared for those last seven games and hopefully get that elusive win.”

BRIDAL BLISS
Doug’s vision: Celebrating the stone and the moment rowing up in the family owned jewellery business, York Jewellers in Penrith, Douglas Ely has always been surrounded by precious stones and craftsmen creating unique, beautiful pieces of jewellery. After creating his first ring at the age of 10, with the expert assistance of his father, Douglas recognised his passion for working with his hands and creating jewellery. Graduating Enmore TAFE in 2013, Douglas’ talents were quickly recognised, as he advanced beyond an apprentice 11 months ahead of schedule, due to the board recognising the exceptional skills he already possessed. Douglas was awarded the 2013 International Showcase Design Awards – creative design category, with his first competition piece ‘Aqua Lace’. The stunning Aquamarine and Diamond pendant transforms into a brooch to be worn two ways (pictured). In 2012 and 2013 Douglas entered and won the NSW division at the ‘World Skills’ competition, a high level skill based competition where apprentices can enter and compete against each other.

2014 saw Douglas come runner up in the National leg of the competition and proudly take home the silver medal. A love of intricate design and the vision to ‘celebrate the stone and the moment’ influence Doug’s design and craftsmanship. “Designing and making a couple’s engagement ring or wedding rings is really special,” he said. “These are pieces of jewellery with so much meaning, that they will treasured forever and it’s an honour to be invited to be a part of the process.”
