Child killer suffers heart attack just days before likely prison release

eville Raymond Towner, who murdered fouryear-old Lauren Hickson in Emu Plains in 1989, has died in jail.

52-year-old Towner suffered a suspected heart attack just days before his likely release from prison.

He was to face another hearing today (Friday, June 29).

His pending release on parole 28 years after being sent to jail had been strongly opposed by Lauren’s family.

Towner was 23 when he attempted to rape Lauren, bashed her head with a river stone and then drowned her in May 1989.

The murder rocked the wider Penrith area to its core.

It’s all a matter of time High Street upgrade will be finished months ahead of original schedule EMILY NEWTON

sking the right questions appears to have cut four months from the construction time of High Street’s upgrade, now expected to be complete before Christmas.

After Cr Mark Davies asked for a report to be brought to Council providing an update on the construction projects of Penrith’s Triangle Park and High Street upgrade, Monday night’s Ordinary Council Meeting delivered good news.

“Following intensive site investigations [of High Street] and design work in conjunction with the utility providers, there has been identified a surplus in the allowances made for utility relocation costs in the order of $420,000,” the Council report states.

“This does allow the budget opportunity to pursue acceleration options with the contractor.”

While there will be larger areas of simultaneous works during the construction period, the overall timeline is expected to be reduced by four months, to be completed by the end of November 2018 instead of the previous expected timeline of March 2019.

“I wanted to get the report because I

wanted to find out the detail for why the Triangle Park took as long as it did,” Cr Davies said.

“For the work on High Street, I didn’t want to see that blow out in time, or see if there were ways in which we could make it as smooth as possible.

“My concern has been for the traders and businesses along there. This report has uncovered an opportunity to save four months of construction time.

“At the end of the day, it’s a big outcome for shoppers, for the city, but most importantly for the businesses.

“The good thing is it will be finished at the end of November, just before Christmas, so it will be really beneficial for that busy holiday season.

“I think asking the questions, the probing and the process has been good. You put a little bit of pressure on, and who knows what you can uncover.”

The report also highlighted that during the $3 million Triangle Park construction, water main issues lengthened the construction timeline to open fully 10 weeks after Council’s expected completion date.

Also at Monday’s meeting, Cr Marcus Cornish said that the damage done to businesses through the construction of Triangle Park was “appalling”.

More for less on Sydney Trains From next week, commuters on the Sydney Trains network will pay more for the privilege of travelling on an unreliable system that has let passengers down consistently over the last six to eight months.

Opal fares will increase by 2.2 per cent, which Transport Minister Andrew Constance says is a good thing because the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal recommended 4.2 per cent.

The increase is less than a dollar per week for the average passenger, but that’s not really the point.

There’s just something not right about paying more for a service that is not delivering.

Mr Constance rammed through his new timetable in November last year, making it longer for passengers to get from Penrith to the City and putting more pressure on the network.

We all know what happened in the months that followed – days of chaos, strike threats and a network buckling under the pressure.

Redfern was also removed as a stop for Blue Mountains Line services because of “data” and “research”. Later, the Government backflipped and announced it would reinstate Redfern as a stop for around six Blue Mountains services.

Removing Redfern was seen as a bizarre and silly move, except by Mr Constance and the bureaucrats at Sydney Trains who just didn’t get it.

And while train delays aren’t making the 6pm news every night at the moment, there’s still enormous problems.

Trains still aren’t meeting performance standards or on-time running targets.

On Monday, another bunch of Western Line services were cancelled or delayed, due to either “operational issues” or trains requiring mechanical repairs.

This has almost become a daily occurrence to the point where you wouldn’t dare rely on the trains to make a crucial meeting or appointment.

We’re told that the new timetable is part of a bigger plan that will ultimately see a smoother, more reliable system.

That’s all well and good, but perhaps until that day comes prices should stay exactly where they are.

Rugby league stupidity It was something special to be part of the crowd at ANZ Stadium on Sunday night to watch New South Wales win the 2018 State of Origin series.

It is utter lunacy to not allow the Blues to raise the Origin Shield in front of their home fans after wrapping up the series.

Instead, Blues skipper Boyd Cordner will be forced to raise the trophy in front of 50,000 screaming Queenslanders at Suncorp Stadium next month.

The same thing happened in 2014.

The Blues wrapped up the series in the second game at ANZ Stadium, but Paul Gallen raised the Shield after the Blues were beaten 32-8 at Suncorp Stadium in the third match. What an odd, hollow feeling for players and fans.

Rugby league officials change plenty of things on the run. They develop new initiatives, and most of them claim to have the fans as the priority.

Surely an exception can be made to the current rules surrounding when the Shield is hoisted if a home team wins the series in game two.

I know common sense isn’t very common, especially in the NRL, but surely this is a simple change that benefits everybody involved, especially fans who have handed over hundreds of dollars for tickets.

ff the back of announcing an additional 200 paramedics for NSW in 2018-19, Premier Gladys Berejiklian made a visit to Penrith to officially open the new ambulance superstation.

Joined by Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres and Health Minister Brad Hazzard, the Premier said that 60 of the extra 200 paramedics will be based in western Sydney.

“The NSW Government is investing more than $1 billion into NSW Ambulance in the Budget 2018-19, to ensure it continues to deliver world-class emergency care,” she said.

“Today is an opportunity for us to thank all of you for all that you do.”

Built on an area where native blue lilies blossom, fittingly symbolising both life and death in Aboriginal culture, the new Penrith superstation will welcome 12 new paramedics in 2018-19.

Local paramedic Lisa Rooney said the transition from the old station into the new superstation provides a complete service that allows paramedics to better serve the community.

“It’s improved our work conditions, mostly our fatigue,” she said.

Now, a Make Ready Logistics Team

cleans and re-stocks ambulances, replaces equipment, and organises equipment and vehicle repairs, allowing paramedics to focus on providing clinical care.

“They’re cleaner, they run faster, they’re in better condition,” Ms Rooney said.

“We essentially just come in and respond to the community’s needs now.”

The Penrith superstation also includes parking bays for 22 ambulance vehicles, a fit-for-purpose medication room for restricted medications, capacity for an emergency operations centre to coordinate major incidents, and an external wash bay.

“Western Sydney, and particularly the area of western Sydney west of the M7, is growing at a rate we have just not seen before,” Mr Ayres said.

“As our communities continue to grow up they demand better and higher quality services.”

While the superstation has been operational since the end of last year, Mr Ayres said the delay in an official opening was to ensure for a smooth transition.

“It’s a big change in service delivery model for these guys, so they just wanted the whole station functional, and all the feedback now is really positive,” Mr Ayres said.

“All the things we said would happen are really now starting to come to life.

“We’ve been challenging the community and challenging service delivery for some time now, and this is another example of us challenging the way we do things and coming up with a better model.”

he historic Fernhill Estate at Mulgoa has been closed for upgrades and site remediation after its sale to the State Government was finalised.

The site’s new owners, the Department of Planning and Environment, said the historic Estate will be reserved as green open space and its heritage buildings and gardens preserved.

Residents relieved after Government reverts to original Castlereagh Corridor plan EMILY NEWTON

fter weeks of strong community opposition, the NSW Government has backed down and confirmed it will use the already gazetted 1951 Castlereagh Corridor.

The Castlereagh Connection corridor through Castlereagh, Cranebrook and Llandilo will revert to the 1951 corridor, with the backflip saving residents’ homes.

Member for Penrith and Minister for Western Sydney, Stuart Ayres, announced changes to the multiple proposed Western Sydney Corridors last week that will reduce the total number of properties impacted from 1247 to 825 and halve the number of residential dwellings impacted from 399 to 200.

“We received constructive feedback from right across the community via the online mapping tool, email, phone calls and community sessions,” he said.

“We have listened to feedback and will continue to make refinements to the exhibited corridors as we work through the submissions made during the exhibition.”

46 A whopping 46 per cent of Australian adults identify as living with insomnia, according to new research by the Sleep Health Foundation.

Of these, 60 per cent claim they have not experienced a good, restful night’s sleep without the use of sleep medication at any time in the last month. The research found that women are nearly 20 per cent more likely to identify as living with insomnia as men. Those identifying as having insomnia say they have trouble falling asleep or remaining asleep on at least three nights of the week.

Smartphone use could be restricted in our schools as part of radical overhaul EMILY NEWTON

echnology has become a crucial part of the classroom, but smartphone use in schools could be restricted as the government looks at their impact on students.

NSW Education Minister Rob Stokes ordered an Australian-first review into childhood phone use last week, which will be led by prominent child psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg.

“While smartphones connect us to the world in ways never imagined just a decade ago, they raise issues that previous generations have not had to deal with,” Mr Stokes said.

“In the classroom and in the playground, smartphones provide opportunities for students and parents to stay connected, but can also create other problems. From screen time to cyberbullying and social media, phones have generated concerns for parents, teachers and students.”

Expert in technology and learning, Associate Professor Matt Bower of Macquarie University, said the review of smartphone use in NSW is “a good idea” but that the technology used for bullying or off-task behaviours shouldn’t be confused with the underlying causes.

Guns destroyed and fines issued after shock discovery

A Glenmore Park man busted storing three guns unsecured in the back of his wardrobe has been stripped of the weapons and hit with hefty fines.

Christophoros Anglis faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday after failing to keep the firearms safely or notifying the relevant agency of his new address.

The court heard police found two rifles and a shotgun in the main bedroom wardrobe behind clothes, violating a specific requirement of his licence.

Anglis, who represented himself, claimed he had never previously abused his firearms licence, which he had held since age 16, and submitted he was a wellrespected member of the community.

Magistrate Geoffrey Hiatt highlighted the gravity of the offences, saying they were serious matters given the proclivity for guns to be used for illicit circumstance or harm if they fell into the wrong hands.

He was convicted, fined $4,100 and the weapons were ordered to be surrendered for destruction.

Man who assaulted elderly parents stays behind bars

A man who violently assaulted his elderly parents when they refused his demands for money, has drawn gasps of disgust from the court gallery as he was sentenced last week.

The 38-year-old showed little emotion as he was handed 18 months jail for the crimes, perpetrated against his father and mother, born in 1945 and 1952, respectively.

Members sitting in the body of the courtroom muttered in contempt as the shameful facts were aired.

They heard in one episode, the man pushed his father to the floor then punched him in the face, while in another, he pushed his mother backwards and attempted to hit her with an exercise bike.

When his father stepped in, he chased

him around the lounge before pushing him onto the sofa and threatened to kill him, causing his mother to flee the house and hide.

His lawyer said the 38-year-old, who has a history of mental health issues and substance abuse, had the “vaguest recollection” of the events, but did not dispute the evidence, instructing he was “embarrassed” by what he had done.

During his sentencing at Penrith Local Court last Thursday, Magistrate Stephen Corry refused the defence’s claim that the community would “probably” agree that the almost 20 weeks the offender had already served in prison would be “punitive enough for penalty”.

Magistrate Corry said his parents had put up with his behaviour long enough.

“Both are aged and both clearly have had significant patience with you and your offending,” he said.

He found the man’s prospects of rehabilitation were “guarded”, given he told Community Corrections he did not see the benefit of further treatment to combat his drug and alcohol problems.

He is eligible for release in February 2019.

The offender’s name has been withheld to protect the victims’ identity.

Teenager urged to control his temper or face serious jail time

An 18-year-old who assaulted his grandfather has been warned he will be treated differently now he is an adult.

Kearen Stevenson fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with property damage and common assault.

Magistrate Stephen Corry told him to keep his anger in check or risk feeling the full force of the law.

“Adult court is a lot less patient with people who continue to commit acts of violence than the Children’s Court is,” he said.

“That’s the risk you run unless you can control your temper.”

He was convicted and fined $1,300.

Man ordered off the road and urged to “grow up”

A young hoon who endangered up to 30 bystanders when he performed a massive burnout has been ordered off the road.

The driver was slapped with an $800 fine and will have to sit on the sidelines for 12 months following his sentence at Penrith Local Court last week.

His lawyer conceded the “facts don’t paint a pretty picture”, but argued the apprentice mechanic had learnt a big lesson and his career had effectively been put on hold as a result of his disqualification.

But Magistrate Stephen Corry noted it was not the 21-year-old’s first infraction, using his traffic history to poke holes in a reference that claimed the offence was out of character.

“It’s not out of character, it appears it’s in character,” Magistrate Corry scoffed, adding he thought he would have “looked after” his licence seeing it was one of the tools of his trade.

He said the driver was lucky no one at the lookout had been killed or seriously injured, pointing out he shed so much rubber he was forced to change his tyre.

“If you lost control of your motor vehicle, you have no idea where it would have ended up,” he scolded.

“You need a period off the road to grow up before you drive a motor vehicle.”

Suspended driver caught twice within half an hour

A suspended motorist sprung driving again 30 minutes after being pulled over by police has walked away from court with a good behaviour bond.

Chris Brent Boller admitted he knew he should not have been driving after being informed of his suspension, but rolled the dice in an attempt to get his children home.

Boller told Penrith Local Court he had no one local to pick them up, saying they ended up having to wait for someone to come from Bathurst to collect them.

But Magistrate Geoffrey Hiatt said he

should have just waited the first time, adding it was a “silly decision” given he was driving in an isolated area where police could easily recognise him.

“You shouldn’t have tried to bluff your way home,” he said.

He was conditionally dismissed pursuant to entering a 12-month good behaviour bond.

Man scolded after failing roadside drug test

Nikola Karoly Ladanyi has escaped a criminal conviction despite failing a roadside drug bust.

Penrith Local Court heard the defendant consumed two ecstasy tablets two days prior to the random test and thought the drugs were out of his system when he got behind the wheel.

While she noted it wasn’t his driving that brought him under notice, the police prosecutor argued he should be “dealt with seriously” nevertheless.

“The community expects that they will be safe while on the road,” she submitted.

Ladanyi’s lawyer said his client had dealt with ongoing problems, including PTSD, since suffering significant injury during an accident in 2015.

Magistrate Stephen Corry told him to seek help rather than self-medicate.

“That’s what you’re doing – it’s not going to solve your problems,” he said.

He was handed a 12-month good behaviour bond.

Lying mum escapes jail term

A woman has avoided jail despite lying to medical professionals after her son ingested drugs, including ice.

The 37-year-old was handed a good behaviour bond at Penrith Local Court this week.

She had originally told doctors her twoyear-old boy had swallowed paint thinner by mistake, but it was later revealed illicit drugs were to blame.

The mother has also been banned from having contact with the child.

Penrith: Man arrested after hoax call to police station

Threatening phones calls to the local police station ended in embarrassment for one man after police quickly tracked the number he called from.

At 6.32pm on Saturday, June 23, Penrith Police Station received a phone call from a number, with the caller threatening to damage the station and cause harm to the police officers inside.

Following a search of the station to ensure everything was safe, inquiries were made on the number that called.

As a result, police arrested and charged a 27-year-old Eastern Creek man with ‘Use carriage service to menace or harass’.

He will front court on Tuesday, July 10.

St Marys: Police investigate after man assaulted in CBD

Police are investigating after a man was found with a serious head injury at St Marys over the weekend.

On Saturday, June 23 at about 11.30pm, a 42-year-old man was with a group at a home on Merinda Street at St Marys.

The man left the location, before returning a short time later suffering a wound to his head.

He returned to a family member’s home on Merinda Street, before they contacted NSW Ambulance paramedics who took the injured man to Westmead Hospital.

Officers from Nepean Police Area Command have commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident and believe the man was assaulted within the St Marys CBD area.

St Marys: Party plans called off after shoplifter is busted

After trying to walk out of a supermarket with a trolley full of food for entertaining, a woman has traded party plans for a future court date.

A 30-year-old female attended a shopping centre at St Marys on Station Street.

The woman was in a supermarket and

filled a trolley with chips, dips and assorted carbonated drinks.

She then left the supermarket without paying, where she was stopped by a loss prevention officer.

The police were called and attended the location where they charged the woman with ‘Shoplifting’ to appear in court at a future date.

St Marys: Variety of charges as police target OMCG activity

A high-ranking member of the Satudarah outlaw motorcycle gang (OMCG) faced court last week after being charged with a slew of offences by Strike Force Raptor.

As part of ongoing targeting of OMCG activity across NSW, officers from the Criminal Groups Squad’s Strike Force Raptor served Firearms and Weapons Prohibition Orders on a 26-year-old St Marys man about 7.40am on Wednesday, June 20.

During a subsequent search of a home unit at St Marys, Strike Force Raptor located and seized a shortened .22 calibre rifle, ammunition, knuckle dusters which contained a conducted electrical weapon, a ‘credit card knife’, methylamphetamine, and Satudarah OMCG paraphernalia.

The man, who is a high-ranking member of Satudarah OMCG, was taken to Penrith Police Station and charged with ‘Possess shortened firearm (not pistol) without authority’, ‘Possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority’, ‘Possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit’, ‘Possess prohibited drug’, ‘Possess unregistered firearmprohibited firearm’, ‘Not keep firearm safely-prohibited firearm’, ‘Possess unauthorised prohibited firearm’, and ‘Supply prohibited drug’.

A second resident of the home unit, a 26-year-old woman, will be dealt with by way of a Future Court Attendance Notice for the alleged possession of the knife.

Dreamworld tragedy inquest continues The inquest into the tragic 2016 Dreamworld accident that resulted in multiple fatalities continues in the Queensland’s Coroner’s Court.

While the Coroner’s Court is not a civil court armed with deciding who was at fault in these types of scenarios, they often come to conclusions about things third parties involved in the circumstances leading to the death could have done differently, essentially assigning a degree of blame.

The most recent example of a coronial inquest that provoked enormous public interest was the inquest into the deaths arising from the Lindt Cafe siege in Sydney in 2014.

Some of the recommendations arising out of the Lindt Cafe siege coronial inquest included the following: 1. That steps be taken by the NSW Police Force to ensure that operational protocols between the Tactical Operations Unit (colloquially known as “SWAT”) and the Counter-Terrorism Units are consistent.

2. The development of an integrated intelligence system that would allow police officers to secure access to all information platforms that might

inform them about an offender with ease and efficiency.

3. A recommendation that the NSW Police Force establish procedures and technical capabilities to ensure that telephone calls from hostages in sieges are expeditiously transferred to officers.

This just a snapshot of the many recommendations made at that inquest.

Dreamworld has come under fire in recent weeks as employees and stakeholders give evidence at the inquest suggesting that Dreamworld placed priority on new attractions at the expense of the maintenance and ongoing upkeep of existing rides, such as the now infamous Thunder River Rapids.

Some of the other evidence given at the inquest has also suggested that some of the staff operating the ride were perhaps inadequately trained and that the problem that arguably caused the accident, being a malfunctioning water pump, was a known fault that had been occurring on the ride repeatedly in the days leading up to the tragedy.

There is also evidence that decision makers in the organisation made a conscious decision to spend less money on maintenance and repair and more money on capital expenditure i.e building new attractions.

While it will be sometime before the inquest’s official findings are released, it appears that there were some serious shortcomings on the part of Dreamworld operators that contributed to this tragedy.

usiness tax can be confusing for the best of us, and with the financial year coming to an end, now is the time to get tax smart.

With his wealth of local knowledge, KPMG’s Peter Tracey said there are four key tax tips that small businesses should be aware of this end of financial year.

“One, if your business turnover is less than $10 million, you are able to claim an immediate tax deduction for the business use of most assets acquired for less than $20,000 prior to June 30,” he said.

“Two, if your business holds stock, be sure to review your stock on hand list before June 30 and write off any stock that would be deemed obsolete.

“Stock on Hand is able to be valued at the lower of cost, market value or the replacement value.”

Thirdly, Mr Tracey said it’s important to review your trade debtors list and write off any debts that are uncollectable.

His final tax tip extends beyond small business and into the individual.

“Individuals are entitled to claim a tax deduction for Concessional Superannuation Contributions up to $25,000 if they are under 65 years of age,” he said.

“If they are between the age of 65 and 74, they can still get a tax deduction so long as they meet the work test.

“This is the first year individuals have been able to do this.”

With this week marking three years since Don’s passing, Practice Manager of Everybody Physiotherapy, Francine Austin said they were honoured to be able to see Don’s dream of an exercise rehabilitation centre rebirthed.

“Not everybody gets to leave a dream that will continue after them,” Kathryn added.

“Don has been honoured by a plaque in the Nepean ICU and a research scholarship in ICU echocardiography, and now this plaque naming the deep-water pool after him, bringing together the wide-ranging legacies of this extraordinary man and his commitment to the health and well-being of the people of western Sydney.”

The late Dr Don Stewart was recently honoured by Everybody Physiotherapy Penrith with a commemorative plaque that was erected outside the former Nepean Specialist Theraputic and Exercise Rehabilitation Clinic, that Don pioneered in the 1990s.

His wife, Dr Kathryn Stewart, said the continuance of Don’s vision and memory meant a lot to her family.

“It is a source of great pride to me and our children to see the ongoing success of the clinic and the continuation of his vision, which is still as fresh and clear as it was when we started 20 years ago,” she said.

“It means a lot to all of us that Everybody Physiotherapy is keeping this vision alive.”

Arriving in Australia from New Zealand in 1990, Don worked with the head of the ICU at Nepean Hospital, Prof Tony McLean, to set up a cardiac echocardiography service for ICU patients, which is now world renowned.

Rubbish goes high tech Cameras in trucks and new data collection methods highlight new waste deal EMILY NEWTON

decade after first introducing the three-bin service to Penrith, Council has awarded the next 10-year waste tender to SUEZ. As one of the biggest tenders Council deals with, they say the new contract recommendations provide residents with the best quality service at the most affordable rate with the greatest flexibility.

“The new contract secures great value for residents with stable pricing for 10 years. We know households need stable pricing and our role is to provide an affordable cost recovery service with the quality inclusions we have come to expect and flexibility for individual choice,” Mayor John Thain said.

“We are proud of our community’s efforts to divert waste from landfill with residents diverting over 29 tonnes of food scraps, garden clippings and organic material from landfill and recycling over 18 tonnes of bottles, containers, cans, paper, cardboard, glass and cartons in the last year alone.”

Along with recognition from celebrity environmentalists Costa Georgiadis and Craig Reucassel, Penrith has received multiple awards for its three-bin system.

“We have to think about what we’re doing to this planet,” Assistant General Manager, Craig Butler said.

“It’s a great opportunity I think for Penrith to lead the way. You can’t keep digging holes and filling the world with waste.”

Identifying customer service as a key feature, SUEZ will use performance mechanisms including cameras fitted to vehicles and live data to provide reliable information on missed services or delays.

“Customer service will be data driven, meaning that the contractor will use the latest technology in the trucks to provide Council with real-time information,” the spokesperson said.

“This means better service and support for our residents as this data can assist performance management and greater immediate support to residents for waste and resource recovery enquiries.”

Under the contract, four annual bulky goods collections for each household continue and the three-bin service will extend to include all rural areas within the Penrith Local Government Area.

For those that struggle with the fortnightly red bin service, Council confirmed other services can be accommodated with an additional payment from the affected resident.

The new rubbish contract has been awarded to SUEZ “As a service it’s all about choice for our residents, we have a number of options our residents can choose from to support their lifestyle requirements including size, frequency and payment options for services,” Cr Thain said.

Campaign against men There is certainly a campaign against men out there at the moment, and the tragedy in Melbourne only highlights this (Editor’s Desk, Weekender June 22). While the murder of Eurydice Dixon was awful, demonising all men is not the solution.

When I grew up, feminism was about legitimately chasing equal rights. It was about wanting the right to vote, the right to go into a pub or the right to enter the member’s stand at a sporting event.

Modern day “feminists” are fighting a fight that has already been fought for them – and won. The anti-men and ‘girl power’ arguments made in the wake of Eurydice Dixon’s murder play with the facts and lack a fundamental understanding of what feminism is. What are the current feminists even after? Positions and jobs they don’t deserve, just to fill a quota?

The whole thing really confuses me and I feel for the next generation who will most likely have to clean up the mess.

With Nepean Hospital having the longest waiting list in the state, staff over worked and equipment in a state of disrepair, Mr Ayres fails the people of Penrith. Even the new development at the hospital does not have funding for staffing when it opens. Mr Ayres has socially isolated the west with road tolls, poor train services, a pedestrian bridge costing the same amount as a road bridge that could have had separated pedestrian walkways, no strategies to get homeless into accommodation. More recently, the WSA and the effect that this 24-hour airport will have upon our sleep and lifestyles will be changed forever. A Northern Road consisting of bus lanes, which could be a much environmentally cleaner light rail to move people with transport from Windsor to Campbelltown not considered.

With residents in the north unhappy with Castlereagh motorway and many other residents being displaced by poor planning, electricity system sold by the government and hurting everyone and yet they said we would be better off. Mr Ayres needs to talk up his failures as NSW voters are not stupid.

Kevin’s weed wish After pointing out the potential dangers of weed infestations countless times, Councillor Kevin Crameri has again reminded Council that noxious weeds are a real threat.

“We can control it, we can probably eradicate it in no time,” he said at Monday night’s June meeting.

“It’s up to us as a Council to have a conscience. I am not an ostrich, I am not going to put my head in the sand.”

Cr Crameri suggested providing Council officers with items like the herbicide Roundup and gloves in the trunk of their cars to help deal with Apple of Sodom and other noxious weeds, rather than allow them to spread.

“In 10 years’ time, you people will see what I was pointing out,” he said.

Rates anger Residents from Mount Vernon spoke out at Monday night’s Ordinary Council Meeting about their rising rates.

Elisa Todesco and Lou Dulisse got stuck in to East Ward Councillors for not representing the community that elects them.

“Penrith Council has made living on rural property unsustainable,” Ms Todesco said.

Councillor Bernard Bratusa said that if their information was accurate, he was “embarrassed as a Penrith City Councillor” to learn of their high costs of rates, saying rural property owners shouldn’t be “punished” and offered to meet with affected residents.

Despite community pleas, Councillors adopted the 2018-19 Operation Plan.

Europe calls for local band Anubis to perform in front of 10,000 music fans at festival LAUREN SUTTIE

Band member David Eaton said he was slightly terrified.

“Obviously there is a great sense of responsibility because you know these aren’t little pub shows, there are some big ones in there, so there is a responsibility to do a great job,” he said.

Originally started by high school friends, Eaton and Robert James Moulding, the band developed a loyal following over in Europe, which even to this day still perplexes Eaton.

“It has been sort of a complete mystery to me that overseas has done really well,” he said.

“It’s kind of like a combination of the Internet being a really helpful way of getting music out there and it sort of organically grew legs from there.”

Mind your own business Unique support group helps people with a disability start their own business LAUREN SUTTIE

new disability peer support group is proving that great things happen when minds come together.

Minding Our Business is a support group for people living with a disability who have started a micro business or have an interest in setting one up.

The idea for the group started with Anna Curryer, who established her own small business, Anna’s Ant Farm, selling homemade jams, chutneys and dog treats.

Anna’s mum, Bernadette Curryer, said her daughter wanted to set up a group that supported others in similar circumstances.

“She was doing quite well and was really enjoying it, but one of the things that really came out of it was that it was really isolating,” she said.

“That’s why we thought to create a hub, so people could come together for social interaction but also to gain support from each other and encouragement to keep going.”

Meeting once a week, the group currently has five members whose business plans include making and selling potted succulents, portrait photography, making tie dye clothing and cupcake decorating.

One of the group facilitators, Libby Ellis, said that it was important this type of support was available to help improve the employment rates for people with disability.

“Starting a small business provides a solution to the low rates of employment,” she said.

“It doesn’t need to be a fully formed idea, but everyone has a small interest or hobby that can be turned into a small business with the right support.”

Recently receiving a grant from Team Up, the group will be holding a launch party this Saturday at Penrith City Library, to celebrate and share their vision and hope to welcome more people into the group.

“If anyone has a particular interest or haven’t really fitted in to other employment options before but you think you have something you are interested in, we can help you develop that into a small business,” Ms Ellis said.

“A micro business is a way to show what they can do, that they can be economic and can contribute in their community and support themselves.”

Jane Wiggill, Health and Advocacy Manager at Red Nose and a registered nurse and midwife, is encouraging the Penrith community to help as they celebrate their 30th anniversary of Red Nose Day today (Friday, June 29).

“30 years ago, the Australian community dug deep for the first Red Nose Day – at a time when Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) was especially prevalent,” she said.

“This year, on Friday, June 29, we are asking Australians to again do the same.

“In the past 30 years, the landscape has changed. We have saved almost 10,000 babies’ and childrens’ lives through research, and evidence-based safe sleeping education programs.

“We have invested almost $17 million into research.

“We continue to provide support to families impacted by the death of a child.”

Just three weeks after Mr Carrasco first sent Mr Crowe a message with the business idea, the pair signed the lease for their studio.

Six weeks later, they were open.

Located at the High Street end of Castlereagh Street, for $59, you’re provided with seating, an easel, paint brushes and paint, a canvas, and glassware for your favourite drop.

Hosts will walk you through the various steps involved in painting the artworks along to a great soundtrack and incredible atmosphere.

“You book your session online, you roll in and it’s all ready. They’ve got their canvas, easel, rag, brushes and paint ready to go,” Mr Crowe said.

Sessions last for roughly three hours, and while there is the option to pre-book amazing grazing boards, the venue is BYO food and drink to cater to all tastes.

Jacob negotiates his way to international competition LAUREN SUTTIE

outh Penrith local Jacob Deigan is set to put his negotiating skills to the test as he represents Australia in one of the oldest and most prestigious law competitions.

Heading to Wales earlier this week, Mr Deigan has joined other university law students from around the world to compete in the 21st International Negotiation Competition.

“I am a lover of negotiation and I compete every chance I get,” he said.

“To travel overseas and be competing as Team Australia on the world stage is a massive honour and privilege.”

Studying a Bachelor of Laws at the University of Notre Dame, Mr Deigan began competing in his third year and found it to be a great outlet.

Since then he has had number of successes, currently holding the title of Australian Law Student Association Negotiation Champion and two-time Clayton Utz/ NSW Young Lawyers Negotiation Champion.

“I decided to continue with the competitions when I saw what an asset the negotiation skills were to me in everyday life,” he said.

The educational competition, which sees teams of two try to resolve a mock conflict and negotiate a settlement between two or more parties, will run

ommunity Junction Inc youth spaces is set to host its annual fundraiser, where everyone walks away a winner.

Running for the past five years, the car wash fundraiser on Monday, July 16 will see locals driving away in sparkly clean cars, as youths aim to raise money for their end of year camp.

“The best thing about the fundraiser is that not only are we raising money for their camp but it’s also allowing these young people to contribute to the community themselves,” she said.

With this year’s camp to be held at Nora Head Holiday Park, it is hoped they can raise as much money as possible to put towards their $3,000 target.

ast week saw the launch of Instagram’s newest feature – Instagram TV (IGTV).

IGTV is a new space on Instagram to be creative and engage your audience with longer videos for up to an hour long, rather than the traditional 60 second clip.

Focused on creators, it allows Instagram users to create their own channel and upload long videos to their IGTV channel to drive subscribers and views, as well as add descriptions to their videos with outbound links.

It’s different to posting a normal Instagram video, because your video usually posts to your account feed, just like your images. IGTV is a separate space, accessible by clicking on the TV icon which appears next to your direct messages button in the top right corner.

If your Instagram doesn’t have this icon, download the IGTV app, create your own channel and link it to your regular Instagram account.

Viewers can swipe through to access a variety of long form videos recommended to you or available through

those you already follow, or you can use the search or browse button to find videos you want to see. You can also like, comment or send directly to friends, just like a normal post or video.

IGTV is designed to use and to watch on mobile devices, so it’s very easily accessible by all users whether you are a creator or user/subscriber.

The introduction of this new function creates a new opportunity for businesses who use videos in their marketing strategy or to showcase their services that would traditionally use additional video-only platforms such as YouTube.

IGTV is currently ad free, for now. Ads will more than likely be introduced later which opens the door for even more social media advertising and opportunities.

Music from their country hearts

here were no shock angles, no tales of drama or sickness and no heartbreaking back story when Australian country rock trio The Wolfe Brothers first appeared on ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ in 2012.

It was just two brothers and their good mate, who connected with audiences through their original songs and their love for music.

And while Tom Wolfe admitted he does

cringe a little when looking back on the experience, he said that their time on the show ultimately set the trio up for what was to come.

“I look back on it and I’m very proud of it, but I do cringe a little bit,” he laughed.

“I think a lot of people saw us and went ‘oh, hang on, there’s no drama back story, it’s just guys who love playing music together’ and I think people connected with that.

“Doing our songs on national TV, we were very grateful, and I think it set us up to be able to tour.”

Six years after finishing second, the Tasmanian trio have just released their fourth album, ‘Country Heart’.

Debuting a completely new sound, Tom said that the group had gone into the writing process knowing they wanted a change.

“We thought we can do the country rock sound forever, but we were all really ready to take it further and take it new places,” he said.

“There has been a lot of growth musically, but it’s been in a really positive way.

“The songs are definitely more us and more authentic than they have ever been and people just seem to be connecting with it on another level, so that is really encouraging for us.”

After losing their father in late 2016, the brothers have since taken on his legacy,

running his berry farm in between touring.

And while the farming industry and the music industry are miles apart from each other, Tom said that farming had given him the best of both worlds.

“I’ve got fences to fix and I’ve got farm work to do, but I enjoy that and enjoy the lifestyle change of it,” he said.

“I love getting out and doing what some people might say is ‘real work’. Some good hard labour, and for me mentally it’s a really good escape.”

The Wolfe Brothers will be performing at Penrith RSL on Saturday, July 7 at 8pm.

T

here is no question that Penrith’s last start effort against the Sydney Roosters a fortnight ago was a disappointing backwards step in the side’s march towards September.

It was the Panthers’ worst defeat of the season but in many ways, you could feel it coming. The enormity of the injury crisis, the pressure of the Origin period and the side’s slow starts in plenty of matches this year were at some stage going to culminate in a performance like that.

The important thing for Penrith is to brush it off and get moving again. With three straight home games coming up, starting this Saturday afternoon against Manly, Anthony Griffin’s men have the

perfect opportunity to solidify their spot in the top four.

The Sea Eagles have had an injury crisis of their own this year and combined with off-field issues, it’s been a season to forget for the Manly faithful. They are in horrible form, having not won since that fiery round 11 clash against Melbourne some six weeks ago.

And it just gets worse for the Sea Eagles with Akuila Uate out for the season with an ankle injury and Kiwi representative Martin Taupau struggling to make it back from Denver due to flight delays.

The Panthers expect their NSW Origin trio of James Maloney, Nathan Cleary and Tyrone Peachey to back up after Sunday night’s epic victory over Queensland, and you would think they bring plenty of confidence back into the camp. Any lingering negativity surrounding that loss to the Roosters a couple of weeks ago should be

put to bed by a triumphant Maloney and Cleary, who would still be beaming after that performance on Sunday.

Penrith can take plenty out of Sunday night’s Origin as far as their own game plan is concerned for this match against Manly. It was a never-say-die effort from the Blues, where they made every tackle count and never gave up on the play. If the Panthers can play for each other, and keep their heads high despite that misstep against the Roosters, they should be able to topple Trent Barrett’s depleted Sea Eagles with relative ease.

Maloney and Cleary are definitely the key on Saturday. A controlled game plan will get Penrith home – especially given the side’s record at Panthers Stadium this year.

Without Campbell-Gillard, it’ll be up to others to step up and deliver Penrith the minutes and enthusiasm their moustachebearing friend does. Enter Jack Hetherington and Trent Merrin. One is young and desperate to be unleashed for more game time, the other is an experienced campaigner who knows how to get the job done when everything is on the line. Both need to deliver on Saturday.

Manly do welcome back Dylan Walker at five-eighth, creating a strong halves partnership with Daly Cherry-Evans, but will it be enough?

It’s hard to go past a Penrith team that has done so well this season, especially when the Sea Eagles have been so poor. If things go to plan, this could be a massacre.

HOOK’S SAFE – I THINK » Fresh rumours that emerged last

weekend over Penrith coach Anthony Griffin’s future at the Panthers are way off the mark according to club officials I’ve spoken to. Griffin is on track to guide the Panthers to a third consecutive Finals series and given he’s done it with a crippling injury crisis, he should be praised versus having his role questioned. Talk that he’s lost the dressing room is just silly. That said, the fact that these rumours keep emerging does make you wonder if there is an underlying issue somewhere in the Penrith structure. I do get a little feeling not all is as well as it’s being portrayed, but any talk of Griffin being dumped is certainly overblown.

Cleary and Tyrone Peachey will all back up to play for Penrith against Manly on Saturday, but were given a few days off this week to soak up the Blues’ historic victory. They didn’t return to training with the Panthers until Thursday. Meanwhile, Kiwi stars Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and James Fisher-Harris were delayed in Denver due to weather issues and have also had limited training leading up to Saturday’s game.

» I’m told the Panthers are more con-

fident than ever that Nathan Cleary will stay at the club beyond his current contract. The 20-year-old’s new home at Thornton is nearly complete, and Cleary seems content with life in Penrith. Why wouldn’t he be? Things are going along swimmingly at present.

I’m told the story is off the mark and the talented powerhouse is going nowhere.

return for Saturday’s game against Manly but it now appears more likely he’ll be back against the Warriors next week instead. The powerhouse centre is back running after ankle surgery, but is at least another week away from being cleared to return.

recently retired skipper Peter Wallace at Panthers Stadium on Saturday. It’ll be the

shopping around former Panthers forward Bryce Cartwright, just six months after he joined the club. The 23-year-old is really struggling at the Titans with his fresh start turning into a disaster. The problem for the Titans is that apart from a couple of low-ball offers, no other club

The Panthers actually have first dibs on Cartwright as part of their deal to release him to the Titans, but have little interest in seeing him return to the foot of the Mountains at this stage.

» Panthers prop Nick Lui-Toso has signed a contract extension which will see him remain with the club until at least the end of 2020. Meanwhile, Liam Coleman has also signed a new contract with the Panthers.

enrith rookie Jack Hetherington is known for being a bit of a ‘loose cannon’ on the field, so much so that the club’s media department held him back from conducting interviews for a few months because they were a little wary as to how he would approach the press.

Extra Time finally got the chance to interview the 22-year-old forward from country NSW this week and – to the media manager’s delight – all went off without a hitch.

Born in Canberra and growing up in the small town of Young, Hetherington was destined to play rugby league.

His grandfather, Roosters legend Bill Mullins. His father, Raiders workhorse Jack Hetherington. And his uncle, Brett Mullins, was one of the most exciting players of the ‘90s.

So how does a player with strong ties to

Canberra and the Roosters end up making his first grade debut at Penrith?

It all began roughly six years ago when Panthers boss Phil Gould and recruitment officer Jim Jones made the four-hour journey to Young to watch some good old fashioned bush footy.

“I was playing in a rep team down there and Jimmy Jones and Gus travelled to Young to watch,” Hetherington recalled.

“We had a chat and I was close to signing with Penrith when I was 16 but I got scared, I thought I’d get homesick.”

Hetherington continued to ply his trade in the country for a few years before the Roosters snared him for their Holden Cup team.

Gould then came calling again, and Hetherington joined the Panthers.

“It was always a dream to play footy and try and be like Dad, Uncle and Pop. I never really expected to be at Penrith but I am and I am loving it,” Hetherington admitted.

“I often hear from Dad and Pop, they ring me all the time and tell me what I’m doing wrong. They tell me to pull my head in.”

rad Fittler’s friendship with Greg Alexander dates back to the mid1980s when Freddy used to hang out with Brandy’s late brother, Ben, at their Penrith home.

“I was 22 and well into my first grade career when I came across Freddy. He was best mates with my younger brother and that’s when I first met him as a 15-yearold,” Alexander recalled on 2GB this week.

“I have known him for a long time and we’ve been through a lot together – a lot on the football field and a lot off it. He was the best man at my wedding and we go back a long way.”

It’s obvious the pair have shared many memorable moments together – some good and some bad – but last Sunday’s State of Origin series win over the once mighty Queensland Maroons could be one of their finest moments to date.

With Fittler as coach and Alexander as

his trusted advisor, the former Panthers duo made NSW great again, just like they did at Penrith nearly three decades earlier.

Alexander said he couldn’t have been prouder of his old mate, Freddy.

“This was the first time I’ve seen Freddy up close and personal as a coach. I was super impressed with him and I gave him a hug last night and told him how proud I was of him,” he said.

Speaking on Channel Nine post-match, Fittler’s sentiments towards Alexander were just as poignant.

“He’s been my filter, my rock, a bit of everything. He’s a beauty and I couldn’t have done it without him,” Fittler said.

But the Penrith connection throughout this year’s State of Origin series didn’t end there, with four current players working their backsides off on the field to bring glory back to NSW. While Reagan Campbell-Gillard was unable to play in Origin II due to injury, nothing was stopping James Maloney, Nathan Cleary and Tyrone Peachey from doing their club and local fans proud.

Photo: NRL Photos For Maloney, it was his first series win in four attempts while Cleary, Peachey and Campbell-Gillard would have felt all their Christmases had come at once, winning on their first try.

“I think it’s special when you’ve been in this arena before and fallen just short a couple of times,” Maloney said.

“There’s a lot of guys in there (sheds) that have played their first series and this is what Origin is – they come in and win a

series. But there is a few of us in there that probably understand a little bit more how special it is.”

20-year-old Cleary said winning Origin was “the best feeling ever”.

“This is the best night of my life. To do it alongside these boys is an absolute pleasure, it was unbelievable,” he said.

NSW will look to clean sweep the series when they take on Queensland at Suncorp Stadium on July 11.

he State of New South Wales is still cheering the Blues, and nowhere should it be louder than Penrith.

The Panthers provided four pieces to the playing puzzle that marooned the Maroons – Regan Campbell-Gillard (unavailable for Origin II), Tyrone Peachey off the bench and halves Nathan Cleary and James Maloney.

The unflappable Cleary pulled of a huge play with his desperate cover tackle on Valentine Holmes. Maloney weighed in with two try-assists and a perfect kicking game.

If that’s not enough for Penrith fans, wait, there’s a whole lot more.

Maloney and Cleary are set to play the whole series together and history tell us that clubs who provide the NSW No.6 and No.7 for the full series have a great record at the back end of the club season.

Let’s make it really clear. Same club. Both halves. NSW. All series. Great record.

Here it is.

In 2014, Canterbury’s Trent Hodkinson and Josh Reynolds steered New South Wales to Origin success. They finished the year in a Grand Final, beaten by the

fairytale that was South Sydney’s first Premiership in 43 years.

In 2013, Maloney and Pearce combined for NSW and the Roosters. They finished the year arm in arm as Grand Final winners against Manly.

You have to go back to 1994 to find the next club mates in the NSW halves for all three games – Canberra’s Laurie Daley and Ricky Stuart. The Raiders won the Grand Final 36-12 against Canterbury.

They were on state duty together 12 months earlier as well when they finished in the top four.

Before that, it was Parramatta’s Peter Sterling and Brett Kenny in 1986. After orchestrating a series sweep against Queensland, they combined to beat Canterbury on Grand Final Day 4-2.

So that’s it. Five times. One top four finish. One beaten Grand Final appearance. Three Premierships.

So much for Origin hangovers!

The Panthers, safely in the top four as you read this, are tracking to continue the trend.

Whirlwind trip to an amazing sporting city

JAMIE SOWARD The match was very physical and the altitude in Denver certainly played a part.

I was speaking with some of the Kiwi boys at the hotel after the game and they really enjoyed the week in Denver, testing their bodies in altitude etc.

While New Zealand fell away to England in the end, I thought Penrith fullback Dallin Watene-Zelezniak was best for the Kiwis closely followed by Esan Marsters from the Tigers. Dallin was pretty rapt afterwards and said it might take him a little longer to recover than usual.

As for the future of this Test in the US, of course it has its critics but taking this match overseas can only benefit the international game moving forward. In the future I’d really love to see Tonga and Samoa also go to Denver and play as the curtain-raiser to England versus New Zealand. Now how good would that be!

Finally, I’d like to congratulate both teams for making the journey and creating an amazing spectacle, with the only real downsides to the trip being the shocking rendition of the New Zealand national anthem and me guzzling down four burgers in 48 hours.

Last week we focused on the importance of nourishing our minds and bodies to improve well-being. As part of this theme, students have been identifying strategies that they employ to help them unwind or relax. Students have also been discussing the importance of choosing healthy options when it comes to food and ensuring that water is their first choice drink.

Ryan particularly enjoyed preparing food and sharing a lunchtime chat with Penrith Panther James Tamou. James spoke to the students about the importance of fuelling his body to deal with the rigours of training and shared what he has most days for breakfast. Congratulations to Ryan for being this week’s student of the week.

I

may have only been in Denver for a few days but boy, it was an experience I’ll never forget.

I had the privilege of calling my first ever Test match on live TV when England took on New Zealand at Broncos Stadium at Mile High last weekend.

I arrived in Denver on Friday afternoon (US time) and it was a whirlwind trip.

Travelling through the city I noticed plenty of banners promoting the game and, judging by the strong 19,500 in attendance, it worked.

Despite the hot conditions, the locals turned out in force – although due to the size of the stadium, it didn’t look that full on TV. The Kiwis were certainly more popular with the crowd but the Poms had a fair few fans cheering them on as well.

While the field was a tad smaller than a regular rugby league pitch back home, the facilities at Broncos Stadium were absolutely world-class.

As for the game itself, well most of the crowd knew what was going on despite having to continuously explain that it’s called rugby league not rugby.

That was the reaction of one of last year’s Penrith City Local Business Awards winners when asked about the presentation evening, to be held at Panthers Exhibition Marquee.

BUSINESS PERSON OF THE YEAR Diana Wolf Growing up, I always knew that I wanted to work with kids. I was very fortunate when the career of speech pathology was introduced to me, as it not only allowed me to work with kids, but also enabled me to help them. Helping children achieve one of the greatest gifts of all, communication, was to me the best job that anyone could have!

In 1995, I was offered the opportunity to become partner in Penrith’s original speech pathology practice. This was the start of the business “Medcalf and Wolf Speech Pathology Service”. In the 23 years since coming into the practice, there have been a few changes, all very positive. A couple of rebrandings and changes in location, with the most recent one being to our new offices at 9 Tindale Street, Penrith.

It has always been a fundamental mission of mine to provide a high-quality speech therapy service, with respect and integrity being the principals that we abide by when we are working with our clients and their families.

Being a helper by nature, I am constantly thinking about how better I can help our clients. In working with clients who suffer from autism spectrum disorder and other developmental delays, it’s been disheartening for me to see the frustration that occurs in our clients parents as a result of the long waiting lists for specialised occupational therapy services. These specialised services assist children overcome sensory issues that can be quite debilitating to their everyday functioning.

In late 2017, with support from my team, I decided to add Occupational Therapy to our service delivery. Our Occupational Therapy service commenced in January, 2018, and has worked wonders in helping our families who were in need of a dual service. We have become a holistic multidisciplinary practice, giving children with autism spectrum disorder and other special needs the opportunity to access both speech and occupational therapy services under the same roof.

My team mean the world to me. I would not be where I am without their support and loyalty. I am very very thankful.

There’s more that lies ahead. I have more plans, I’m very excited for the future and about other services that I will be able to provide to further help our clients.

Recently we started discussing children and dogs and the signs to look for that indicate a dog is feeling uncomfortable around children. This week we will discuss preparing puppies for children and how to raise a puppy that interacts well with kids.

To accomplish a good relationship between pets and children, there should be frequent positive interactions for the young pup to meet children during its early months of life. Puppies are most social and receptive to learning up to 12 weeks of age; the experiences and interactions they have during this time can make a lifelong impression. This means that if a young child accidentally hurts a young puppy, the puppy may be scared or act inappropriately towards children all its life.

Ongoing positive experiences between children and puppies are essential to maintain healthy social relationships.

Puppies should be introduced to children when they are calm, and treats should be used to facilitate introductions; this allows the puppy to build a positive association with children.

Positive interactions at a young age help prevent the development of fear, avoidance behaviour and aggression when the pet becomes older.

All family members should make a point of gently and positively handling the puppy in ways that a child might touch it. This may mean that you give the puppy treats while touching the tail, ears, body as well as during grooming, nail trimming and teeth brushing. This will allow the puppy to become used to handling and not become fearful. Any type of physical punishment, threats with the hand or forceful interactions

should be avoided. Pets must learn that the human hand is friendly and not to be feared; if pets associate hand movement with threats or discomfort, they can bite when a child moves a hand towards them as they may associate it with a previous negative interaction.

Puppy classes that encourage family attendance can be a great way for puppies to interact with other dogs, people and children in a controlled environment.

However, it is important that puppies are not overwhelmed so they do not develop fear or avoidance behaviour towards other animals or people.

It was originally thought that Russian Cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin, the first man blasted into space in April 1961, said “I don’t see any God up here”.

It is now agreed it was probably Khrushchev, the Head of Russia’s Communist Party, who in a later speech said, “Gagarin flew into space, but didn’t see any god there”.

Whoever said this, they echo the thoughts of many who say, “I’d believe in God if only I could see him!”

This takes us to Jesus and his time here on Earth.

Jesus made extraordinary claims about himself leaving us with few options.

Jesus was either an extraordinary liar or a prize winning fool, or he was who he said was; God himself come into our world.

This brings us to the often made claim in the Bible about not seeing God, yet believing in him.

Consider the Apostle Peter, who in his

first letter, written 30 years after Jesus said, “Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible joy”.

Peter’s readers have not seen Jesus but Peter has and this is exactly how we do things today.

There are many historical people we have never seen, yet we know things about them because the evidence tells us about them. If you doubt Jesus, check the facts for yourself.

The more you understand who Jesus is and what he has done for you, then Peter’s words will be real for you.

Looking at these shorter periods will likely see us to do exactly the reverse of the common mantra, we are likely to buy high and sell low. Definitely not what we know we should do.

Although I can logically tell you, that if you put your money in a balanced investment for 10 years, and leave it, we can predict with reasonable accuracy a range your investment will end up, in leaving it for 10 years we have to at times fight our instincts and remember the long-term plan.

Easier said than done at times, and sometimes the most value an advisor can offer you is to protect you from your instincts.

When it comes to investing human instincts make us make bad investment decisions, as an advisor our role is often encouraging our clients to ignore some of these instincts and stick to their plan.

I had a classic example of this during a recent client review, after discussing the client’s circumstances and goals we had a look at the progress of their superannuation, with the markets performing poorly over the past 12 months the value of the portfolio had fallen by about four per cent.

The client was quite concerned about this loss and was immediately thinking about safer options.

Under closer inspection, the client over the previous three years had made over $40,000 and averaged around 10 per cent return.

This is above the long-term expectations for the investment.

Once viewing the longer time frame, the client was comfortable with the investment and was happy to continue with the long-term investment strategy.

But what makes us forget the three good years of return and focus on the negative year, that the client was more than aware was going to happen at some point?

There are human instincts that have been drilled into us through years of evolution that have helped the human race survive and thrive, but hurt us when making investment decisions.

One such instinct is “recent event bias”, this is essentially giving the most recent event greater importance than all previous events.

This normally helps us, as it allows us to adapt to changing environments. For example if over time a road gets busier and busier we take caution close to the last time we crossed the road, not the long-term average. This of course makes sense with most things. Our most recent encounter with something is usually the most relevant to how we deal with it in this encounter.

What happens with investing, this causes us to look at short time frames and assume that recent returns are most likely to replicate upcoming returns.

This is of course not true, and in fact quite the opposite, after a reasonably sustained period of growth, we are likely to experience a correction and the market will fall to its “true value”, and the reverse is also true, often a market loss is followed by

Call for pitch overhaul NATHAN TAYLOR

he Nepean Football Association (NFA) have started a petition to assist in making the dream of having a synthetic pitch constructed in the local area a reality.

For more than a decade, the NFA have been actively working with Penrith City Council to have a synthetic pitch installed in the district to allow for yearround participation.

If installed, the synthetic pitch is expected to be utilised by everyone involved in local football including junior players, senior players, special

school competitions which, at present, play havoc with turf fields.”

While the NFA would be more than happy with just one synthetic pitch, they would ideally like to have two full sized synthetic pitches sitting side by side for maximum impact.

It’s understood a single pitch would cost around $1.7 million, while two pitches would cost the Association roughly $3 million.

“These costs also include earthworks, fencing and lighting. However, if the pitch is installed at Jamison Park, the cost would be reduced further due to the adequate lighting there already,” Cerone said.

Speaking with the Weekender, NFA General Manager Linda Cerone said a synthetic pitch in the Penrith area would have many benefits.

“For matches considered critical, it will allow us to ignore most inclement weather events and proceed with matches,” she said.

“Being permanently marked, a synthetic pitch would remove the need for constant weekly remarking of fields.

Coach honoured for hours of dedication and spirit NATHAN TAYLOR

ocal softball coach Matthew Beach has been named a joint winner of Young Coach of the Year at the 2018 NSW Community Sports Awards, held last week.

Celebrating the extraordinary contributions made to community sport in NSW, the event was hosted by Penrith MP and Sports Minister Stuart Ayres at NSW Parliament House.

Among his accomplishments, Beach coached the NSW Metro team in the Blacktown Junior International Challenge, finishing an impressive fourth against teams from Japan and New Zealand.

He was also an assistant coach of the NSW Metro team at the Australian U15s, who finished third.

The young Glenmore Park resident has also been very active in the local sporting community, coaching a number of successful Penrith junior representative and club teams as well as the Ladies Over 35s.

Beach, who won the coveted award alongside Dragon Boat coach Chanelle Hosken, also gives his time freely at various softball coaching clinics and camps.

“More than 2.1 million people give up their time to volunteer across the state, with an incredible 500,000 volunteers contributing to local sport every week,” Mr Ayres said.

“Volunteering is the backbone of many communities and contributes more than 240 million hours of service and over $5 billion to the NSW economy every year.

“Sport, in particular, relies heavily on volunteers to ensure the smooth running and operation of clubs to support 2.5 million people participating in grassroots sport each week.

“So we are talking about the mums, dads and volunteers, young and old alike, getting up early or staying late and giving generously of their time to help their local clubs.”

Meanwhile, the Penrith City Softball Association have fallen agonisingly short of winning a highly coveted three-peat at the U19 Men’s State Championships last weekend in Rooty Hill.

After going through the entire weekend undefeated, Penrith City weren’t able to keep their perfect record going, losing to a red-hot Macarthur side 7-0 in the Final.

Penrith City had previously won the U19 Men’s State Championships in 2016 and 2017.

Around the grounds BASKETBALL: Penrith’s Men’s team have had a tough weekend of results during Round 14 of the Waratah Championship League (WCL) competition.

Playing in a double header, Penrith lost to Manly Warringah 90-81 last Saturday before going down to Maitland 95-85 on Sunday.

Centre Sean Weekes was a standout for Penrith, scoring 42 points across the weekend.

Meanwhile, Penrith women’s team enjoyed last weekend off and will return to the court this Saturday.

Both sides will take on the Hills Hornets this Saturday at Hills Basketball Stadium.

AFL: After a slow start to the season, the GWS Giants have now won three in a row, defeating the Brisbane Lions 109-82 in Round 13 of the AFL. The 27-point win puts the Giants just half-a-win out of eighth spot.

AFL: The Penrith Rams have suffered just their second loss of the season, going down to Southern Power 69-54 in Round 11 of the AFL Sydney Platinum Division.

Mitch Stevens and Ben McGovern both kicked two goals for the Rams.

Meanwhile, the Auburn-Penrith Giants have continued their winning ways, defeating Southern Power 27-21 in Round 10 of the AFL Sydney

Women’s Premier Division.

The Penrith Rams will take on the Western Magic this weekend, while the Giants will face the UTS Shamrocks.

NETBALL: Giants Netball have played out a hard-fought draw against Sunshine Coast 53-53 in Round 8 of the Super Netball competition.

The Giants will look to make it three straight weeks without defeat when they battle the Adelaide Thunderbirds this Sunday afternoon in Canberra.

NETBALL: The Panthers Opens team have lost four in a row to start the year, defeated by the Sutherland Stingrays 62-44 in Round 4 of the Netball NSW Premier League competition.

Both teams will take on the UTS Sparks in Round 5.

RUGBY: The Western Sydney Barbarians have gone down to Southern Districts 12-7 in Round 11 of the Bill Simpson Shield (Third Grade Colts).

Memories and mayhem on water Crazy journey for local crew tackling Sydney to Noumea race NATHAN TAYLOR

s captain of the Nepean Belle, Chris Bennett is very familiar with the calm, tranquil waters of the famous Nepean River.

Something the local business owner wasn’t as prepared for were the treacherous conditions he and eight other men faced on the first Sydney to Noumea Yacht Race in 25 years.

Bennett, along with Emu Plains resident Richard Woods and Cranebrook local Hans Neumann, recently set out for an adventure of a lifetime on-board “Sticky”, their 38-foot yacht.

Despite spending eight months preparing themselves for the 1,000+ nautical mile journey, the crew on-board Sticky – and the 21 other boats competing – weren’t expecting a massive cargo ship to lose 83 shipping containers into the ocean right before the race.

“The Cruising Yacht Club (CYC) decided to postpone the race for 24 hours due to the conditions and the 80-odd containers that fell off the ship,” Bennett told the Weekender.

“When the CYC got more information about the whereabouts of the containers, they set up an exclusion zone that we weren’t allowed to sail into.”

Once the competition finally got underway, all the pre-race nerves quickly disappeared as the fleet sailed out of Sydney

However, it wasn’t that far out of Sydney before conditions started to worsen, with Bennett admitting he and three others were very sick on the first night.

“I threw my guts up,” he revealed.

“The weather conditions were very challenging. The big seas didn’t let up, it was relentless. The breeze was between 20-30 knots, there were lots of rain cells in the distance and the waves kept coming and coming over the bow.

“We were all wet for five or six days – I’m not sure too many guys would go back and do it again.”

But despite all the trials and tribulations that comes with crossing the mighty Pacific, Bennett and his sailing mates worked together to battle through the adversity and cross the finish line in just under six days (5D 20H 38M 40S).

After finishing second in their division, Bennett said the memories he gathered from his first major sailing race will stick in his mind forever.

“It was such an awesome run. To be able to back up after yesterday, it takes it out of you physically and mentally and emotionally, so I’m really pleased with that final.”

The Australian has dominated C1 events in recent years, and will be a short-priced favourite to win gold when the event makes its Olympic debut in Tokyo in 2020.

“When I got into that final with a solid run, I just really wanted to charge it and attack it,” Fox said.

“I fixed the errors I made in the first run, and I was really pleased and very surprised by that time in the finish. I think the field is growing every year, and the girls are very competitive.”

Meanwhile, fellow local paddlers Noemie Fox and Rosalyn Lawrence also competed at last weekend’s opening World Cup. Fox finished seventh in the women’s C1 Final, while Lawrence finished 20th.

The second 2018 ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup begins in Krakow, Poland, today (June 29).

Title success for Dicker makes long trip worthwhile NATHAN TAYLOR

espite coming away with a disappointing end to the opening round of the Top End Challenge in Darwin recently, local driver Nathan Dicker managed to bounce back in fine fashion the following night, emerging victorious in the Darwin Title.

Making the long 44-hour trek from his home in Londonderry to the Northern Territory for the third straight season, Dicker only had a handful of race meetings in Wingless Sprints under his belt.

Dicker finished a disappointing seventh in the opening race before returning to the Northline Speedway track the following night to contest the Darwin Title.

After an incorrect setup choice impacted him in the first race, Dicker made several setup changes in time for the second outing, which ultimately paid off.

and first in the heats to claim a pole position start in the 15-lap feature race.

Experiencing an early battle with good friend and fellow NSW driver Troy Carey, it was Dicker who came out on top on lap six, eventually managing to create a decent gap from his rivals, to lead what was a NSW-dominant podium and take a convincing win.

“After Saturday night’s feature race disappointment, it was great to be able to bounce back and make amends the following night to take out the Darwin Title,” Dicker said.

“This is the third consecutive year that I’ve raced up in the Northern Territory, and I love racing up there. The people are great and the hospitality from everyone is without a doubt second to none.”

Dicker is back in the Territory this week to contest the third and fourth Top End Challenge rounds, which get underway tonight. Dicker currently sits on top of the overall Top End Challenge standings.

Fox finds familiar form NATHAN TAYLOR

L

eonay paddler Jessica Fox has kicked off the 2018 ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup season with a bang, winning back to back gold medals in Liptovsky Mikulas, Slovakia, last weekend.

The 24-year-old local superstar could not have been more impressive in the women’s C1 Final, blowing away the field to win by more than seven seconds in cold and wet conditions.

Her final time was an error-free 106.34, with Czech Tereza Fiserova finishing second in 113.96. Great Britain’s current world champion, Mallory Franklin, finished third.

Already on the weekend, Fox had started the new season in the same way she finished 2017 – on top of the women’s K1 podium.

The reigning K1 World Champion won the women’s K1 in a time of 101.20, almost two seconds faster than Austria’s Corinna Kuhnle, with Germany’s Ricarda Funk third.

After last Sunday’s gold medal run, the dual Olympic medallist said she was inspired by the noise of the slalom fans as she made her way down the Liptovsky course.
