hese are the incredible images that show how empty paddocks will be transformed into a vibrant City Centre just a short drive from Penrith.

The NSW Government has committed $1.15 billion to kick start work on the Bradfield City Centre, supporting thousands of jobs on the doorstep of the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the funding paves the way for work on the project to begin this year, starting the creation of a world class city precinct that will support up to 17,600 highly skilled jobs.

“This is another exciting step forward in realising the Government’s vision for this city-building project,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“We have named the new Aerotropolis city, Bradfield, and now work is set to begin to turn what is essentially a paddock today into a thriving global city centre.”

This commitment from the NSW Government includes $975.5 million in enabling works to establish, remediate and allow site access to about 100 hectares of land, driving the COVID-19 economic recovery not only in NSW, but across the nation.

Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said there is also funding to establish the First Building in the Bradfield City Centre and for a four-year pilot of the New Education and Training Model (NETM).

“The government has committed $138.2 million for the First Building which includes a $24.9 million high-tech facility which will house $22.9 million worth of shared-use equipment for research institutions and industry to collaborate,” Mr Ayres said.

“The NETM is a new model of tertiary education aimed at helping advanced industries access skilled labour.”

Time for Honours re-think Honoured for doing your job So the hot Hemsworth, a former NRL star, a political advisor turned media commentator and a code-hopping female sporting superstar now have fancy letters following their names after the Queen’s Birthday Honours List was released on Monday.

I don’t know about you but these Honours Lists, released twice a year, are really starting to make me cringe.

Sure, amongst the list of 1,190 Australians recognised are worthy recipients working hard in their communities, names you’ve probably never heard of.

But too often people are bestowed significant, permanent Honours simply for doing their job, or because they happen to be well known.

Let’s take Glenn Lazarus for example, honoured for “services to rugby league”.

Lazarus was an absolute legend of the game, winning premierships at three clubs, but this was his chosen profession.

A sport he was passionate about and was able to play professionally. He is now Glenn Lazarus OAM. The hot Hemsworth – Chris – was honoured with an AM for “significant service to the performing arts, and to charitable organisations”. For that significant service to the arts, Hemsworth has a charmed lifestyle and a net worth well over $100 million. His charity work is significant, but his work on ‘The Saddle Club’ is mentioned higher in the official notes for his Honour.

Then there’s Tony Abbott’s former Chief of Staff turned Sky News commentator, Peta Credlin, who now adds AO to her name. She’s been honoured for “distinguished service to parliament and poli-

tics, to policy development, and to the executive function of government.” That pretty much sounds like her job description from her time in Canberra.

Then there’s Erin Phillips, who at 36 is now Erin Phillips OAM thanks to her “service to Australian rules football, and to basketball”. Again, sports she chose to play professionally and has done very well out of.

I’ve got nothing against these high profile people who have achieved incredible things in their professions, but I’m not sure those professions alone, with a bit of charity work thrown in (in some cases), means they deserve some of our country’s highest Honours.

Or maybe us in the media need to stop focusing on the high profile recipients, and instead shine the spotlight on those lesser known, more worthy honourees.

Either way, the system feels clunky and awkward and needs a re-think.

Media giants both hold some blame So the war between News Corp and the ABC has gone up a notch in the wake of a somewhat scathing editorial in The Australian last week, and the ABC’s subsequent response.

Regardless of your views on either organisation, the reality is this: we need them both, and both have flaws.

Those flying the ABC flag constantly refuse to accept that News Corp does produce some fine journalism across its plethora of publications, and a blanket “ban on Rupert” is failing to see the forest for the trees.

But News Corp puts much of its digital content behind a clunky paywall system, while its print publications have skyrocketed in price in recent years.

Hence, the free alternative from the ABC is critical. It’s important too for those communities discarded by News Corp when they axed dozens of print publications in recent years.

The ABC produces some of the most important journalism in the country. But it does have a significant lean to the left, which is often overtly obvious.

And it’s true that programs like ‘Media Watch’ have become obsessed with News Corp, much like they did with Alan Jones during his final years at 2GB. Media wars really should be a thing of the past.

We’ll always have competition in this sector, but producing researched, professional journalism has never been more important given we live in an age where anyone with a Twitter account can try to set the news agenda.

Being on the same page, not tearing each other apart, surely bears more fruit.

outh Penrith resident Barry Costa has been recognised for showcasing an outstanding commitment to local organisations in the 2021 Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Mr Costa received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his service to the community through rugby league.

A member of Brothers Penrith Junior Rugby League Club since 1983, Mr Costa said volunteering has never felt like work.

“I was discharged from the Royal Australian Navy in 1976 and my wife and I built our house here in South Penrith and have been a part of the community ever since,” he told the Weekender.

“I have always enjoyed volunteering and I have followed rugby league since I was a kid, so you just get involved to be a part of it.”

Holding several roles over the years from Club Treasurer to coach, he has most recently been a Try Time Coordinator since 2014.

“I believe that kids, both male and female, should play a team sport because

it creates a lot of friendships and bonds for the rest of your life, plus if you are good at it, it can open lots of doors,” he said.

“Try Time is where we teach special needs kids mainstream rugby league through two hours of training each Sunday and then the last 20 minutes, we play a game of two-handed touch football.”

Mr Costa said he is proud to be a part of the program and see the growth since it was established.

“It is so rewarding and when Brothers started, we had five players involved and this year we have 28,” he said.

“There are four clubs in Penrith that do it now and two in Parramatta, so once a month we catch up and play against each other with 110 registered players all up, which is great.”

Volunteering in the past for St Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church and Nepean Food Services Meals on Wheels service, the 71-year-old said his schedule is quite full of community work.

“I was in the Penrith RSL Sub-branch as well, but I belong to the Nepean Blue Mountains Naval Association and attend meetings there, so with football as well, it ties up a lot of my time,” he said.

Legal showdown looms Land and Environment Court set to decide fate of major CBD proposals ALENA HIGGINS

old visions to transform the western end of High Street into soaring mixed use towers have been rejected, sparking future showdowns in the Land and Environment Court.

Earlier this month, Urban Property Group (Urban) and TOGA’s respective proposals for 614-632 and 634-638 High Street, Penrith were refused by the Sydney Western City Planning Panel (Panel).

TOGA’s $114 million Development Application (DA), lodged in March 2020, proposed the construction of a part 14, part 37-storey tower, including basement car parking, a five-storey podium containing commercial premises, 356 residential apartments and a new public road.

Similarly, Urban’s $110.5 million DA for the neighbouring site, which proposed a part eight, part 46-storey development comprising retail and office premises, car parking, 41 serviced apartments and 272 residential apartments was unable to get over the line.

address Penrith Council’s concerns, specifically regarding its community infrastructure offer.

However following the deferral, TOGA

lodged a Class A appeal in the Land and Environment Court, prompting the Panel’s refusal.

“Given that no intention to make any

significant revision to the DA has been communicated to address the merit concerns... the Panel resolved unanimously to refuse the DA,” the Determination and Statement of Reasons shows.

Urban’s community infrastructure offer was also a sticking point, as was the management of traffic generated from the development, however the Panel was not unanimous in its decision, with two of the five members preferring to give Urban more time to address concerns.

Urban CEO Patrick Elias said it was very disappointing and confirmed Urban would be taking the matter to Court in the near future.

“It’s quite unfortunate that it’s going to take another six to 12 months to get an approval on this, which is costly for us and costly for Council, and I think we’re still going to achieve a similar result to what was lodged,” he said.

TOGA’s Penway Place project, which included a 12 and 15-storey tower offering up to 187 residential apartments, had previously been approved in late 2019, but TOGA took advantage of new incentives provisions to lodge a larger development for the key site.

Murder breakthrough Man charged as investigations into Colyton driveway shooting continue EMILY FESZCZUK

F

ive years after Adrian Buxton was murdered in his driveway at Colyton, police have had a breakthrough and have charged a man over the alleged shooting.

After extensive investigations, Strike Force detectives arrested 30-year-old Olevar Merza at a correctional centre on the state’s Mid North Coast on Thursday, June 10.

He was charged with ‘murder’ and ‘knowingly direct activities of a criminal group’.

About 9pm on Thursday, May 19 2016, police and emergency services were called to Coral Pea Court, Colyton, where they located Mr Buxton, aged 31, with gunshot wounds.

He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics but died at the scene and Strike Force Thistleton was established to investigate his murder.

It is believed after shooting Mr Buxton several times, two people ran from the scene and were picked up a short distance from the home.

Following a review of CCTV footage in the area, detectives identified three vehicles travelling together in the area at the time of the incident.

In September 2016, police conducting a separate investigation seized a firearm during a search warrant at a home in Lime Street, Cabramatta that was linked to the murder of Mr Buxton through ballistic examination.

Strike Force detectives also located and seized one of the vehicles believed to have been in the area that was subject to forensic examination.

In April this year, the NSW Government, together with the NSW Police Force, announced a $1 million reward for information relating to Mr Buxton’s murder.

Homicide Squad Commander Detective Superintendent, Danny

Doherty said an extensive review of physical and forensic evidence and information obtained over the last five years has led to the progression in the case.

“Today’s arrest and charge is a positive step forward, while it is important and the family is happy that we have taken action, our work is not yet finished,” he said last Thursday.

“More information will come out in court in due course and motive is really difficult to define but what we do know is that is that organised criminal networks were involved.”

Merza appeared in Port Macquarie Local Court on June 10 and remains behind bars.

Despite the charge, police are still calling for more information as investigations under Strike Force Thistleton continue.

“We did not get a silver bullet from the $1 million reward, but it was an important part of that process to obtain information from the public,” he said.

Help after treatment New support program for cancer survivors set to launch in Penrith in July EMILY FESZCZUK

ancer survivors can help restore their physical and emotional wellbeing with the Cancer Council’s ENRICHing Survivorship Program that is coming to Penrith next month.

The free group program will begin on Friday, July 30 with two-hour sessions for eight weeks to provide support following cancer treatment.

Cancer Council Greater Western Sydney Community Programs Coordinator, Natalia Arnas said the program is open to both patients and their carers or family.

“Coming to the end of treatment is hard for patients because it has such an impact, but research shows that exercise is beneficial during and after cancer treatment, helping with side effects, speeding up recovery and improving quality of life,” Ms Arnas said.

“Our eight-week sessions focus on exercise and nutrition ideas from an exercise physiologist and dietitian, as well as a yoga and mindfulness session and peer support from our volunteers.”

“It is a stepping off point for the next part of your life and helps people get in tune with their new normal which will look different,” Ms Forster said.

“It can be frightening to not have a medical team around you, but we can help you set goals, and it is not all gloom and doom, there is a lot of laughter.”

Sharing an experience with other survivors can help those who have battled cancer to not feel so alone.

“During diagnosis and treatment many of us survivors are trying to be strong to protect our family and friends and not have them worry about us,” Ms Forster said.

“This is a good place to air real thoughts or worries you didn’t want to share with your partner or family, and you will find people will be feeling exactly the same with their story.”

Ms Arnas said even people who have been in remission for an extended period can still benefit from participating.

he Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD) reached a significant milestone last week when they delivered their 10,000th COVID vaccine at the Nepean Hospital vaccination clinic.

Now open to the public and NBMLHD staff members, the lucky person to get the 10,000th jab was Melanie Brothers, who is a McGrath Breast Care Nurse at the Nepean Cancer and Wellness Centre.

Ms Brothers is now fully vaccinated after receiving her second dose, and said it is a great feeling to be protected.

NBMLHD Nurse Manager, Kim Maddock, said it is encouraging to see the community unite.

“We’ve been open to the public a few weeks now and more and more people are registering,” she said.

“They are rolling up their sleeves and are wanting to help put a stop to the spread of this virus.”

NSW Health urges everyone to get vaccinated when they are eligible to do so and follow the priority groups set out by the Federal Government.

Everyone who attends any NSW Health COVID-19 vaccination centre is assessed for eligibility in person on the day of their booking by a qualified health professional.

Appointments can be booked through the eligibility checker on the Commonwealth Department of Health website at covid-vaccine.healthdirect.gov.au/ eligibility.

Centre causes concern Neighbours say location for proposed childcare centre is “inappropriate” EMILY FESZCZUK

S

t Clair residents are not playing around when it comes to a proposal to construct a two-storey 58 place childcare centre in their suburb.

Located on the corner of Bennett Road and Coonawarra Drive, residents believe it is not a suitable spot for the development.

Rita Formosa, who has lived in the area for over 40 years, is one of the neighbours opposing the project. She said there is multiple reasons why it should’t go ahead.

“I know parents need somewhere for their kids to go when they have to go to work but this is not a well thought out plan for the particular spot,” she said.

“The main problem is there is another childcare centre just a few hundred metres away and it is next to a roundabout, which has recently been installed because it was highlighted as a ‘blackspot’ by Council for accidents.”

Ms Formosa said the increased traffic from parents using the centre, poses a risk of more accidents in the area.

“The other neighbours and I share the concern that with the extra traffic in the

awkward spot there will be more near misses or accidents which already happen regularly,” she said.

“The traffic volume count that was undertaken also happened in November 2020, when we still had COVID restrictions, so it should not be approved on information that is not accurate.”

The two-storey centre includes basement parking, but Ms Formosa said it will not do enough to prevent parents parking along the suburban street.

“It has nine spots for teachers and six for visitors, so as soon as parents realise how difficult it is to go underground and get back onto the street, they will start parking along the street,” she said.

“A few of the neighbours, including myself, are shift workers so there will also be an increase of noise from all the children when they are outside and the traffic.”

The Weekender reached out to the architects of the project, Baini Design for comment on the specific concerns, but they did not respond.

Penrith Council said community concerns would be taken into account when assessing the development.

A man has been charged after driving in St Marys while being disqualified.

About 12.35pm on Thursday, June 10, police were patrolling Wilson Street, St Marys when they stopped a motor vehicle for a random breath test.

The 27-year-old St Marys man’s breath test was negative, but when asked for his licence, it is alleged the man could not produce one.

Checks revealed that he was disqualified from driving from March 2020 to September 2021.

The man was charged and will appear in Penrith Local Court on Monday, July 12.

Penrith: Man charged after being found with knife in public

A man has been charged after having a knife out in public in Penrith.

About 7pm on Tuesday, June 8, police were informed that a man about 50 metres from the police station had a knife.

Police spoke to the 28-year-old Penrith man and searched him, where they allegedly located a butterfly style knife in the front pocket of his pants.

The knife was roughly 12 centimetres in length and the man was arrested.

He was charged and will appear in Penrith Local Court on Monday, July 19.

St Marys: Foot chase sparked after incident at train station

A man has been charged after possessing a prohibited drug and goods that were suspected of being stolen in St Marys.

About 10.55pm on Thursday, June 10, police were patrolling St Marys Railway Station when it is alleged, they were approached by a large group of people.

Police requested back-up and at the same time, it is alleged the group began to run.

One of the males was followed by police, who called out for him to stop but he continued to run.

On the way, police saw him throw two phones near a tree so one officer stopped to collect them, while the second officer continued to chase him.

Orchard Hills: Man caught drink driving over long weekend

A man has been charged after being caught drink driving in Orchard Hills over the long weekend.

About 11pm on Sunday, June 13 police were patrolling the M4 Motorway, Orchard Hills where they stopped a motor vehicle for excessive speed.

The driver, a 31-year-old Katoomba man was breath tested, which proved positive.

The man was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station for a secondary breath analysis, that returned a positive reading of 0.081.

He was charged with ‘mid-range PCA – first offence’ and his licence was suspended on the spot.

The man will appear at Penrith Local Court on Thursday, July 8.

Kingswood: Weapons, ammunition found during search of property

A man has been charged after a search of his Kingswood home allegedly revealed two firearms and over 2500 rounds of ammunition.

On Thursday, June 10, officers from Nepean Police Area Command Proactive Crime Team executed a search warrant at a home on Plunkett Crescent, Kingswood.

A 30-year-old man was arrested after officers allegedly located a sawn-off .22 rifle and a replica Glock pistol that functions as a conducted electrical device.

A large amount of ammunition, magazines, knuckle dusters, an amount of methylamphetamines, a hand-made stun gun and allegedly stolen property was also seized.

The man was taken to Penrith Police Station where he was charged with 14 offences. He appeared in court on June 11 where he was bail refused.

COMPULSORY ACQUISITION You’ve probably seen the classic Aussie film ‘The Castle’ in which the government tries to forcibly purchase a man’s house to make way for an airport. Well, that’s a real thing.

Legislation exists that empowers local councils, state and federal governments to compulsorily acquire privately owned land on just terms for things like infrastructure development.

Governments need these powers to do things like build roads, train lines and… airports.

In Penrith, we are witnessing a reallife production of ‘The Castle’ with the construction of the Badgery’s Creek Airport and unprecedented infrastructure investment in the area.

Local examples include: • Parcels of land being snapped up in areas like Luddenham and Bringelly to enable construction of the “new” Northern Road • Properties being acquired in Badgery’s Creek to make way for the airport • Land acquisitions along Mulgoa Road to enable it to be widened • Orchard Hills properties near the Kent St interchange being swallowed up to make way for a new Metro Station While these types of acquisitions can be devastating for property owners who have their dream homes pulled out from underneath them, this piece of law is necessary to make sure that governments can provide for the needs of a growing population.

The key to the legislation is the term “on just terms”, which means that governments can only acquire properties on terms that are fair. The main way to measure fairness is price i.e. the government paying fair market value for the property, however other factors

also come into play like what effect the relevant infrastructure will have on a property when only some, but not all, of the property is being acquired.

The process is quite complex, but it can be broken in to two parts: 1. A government representative contacts a landowner to inform them of their intention to acquire their land following which they provide a valuation which is used to determine the price that will be offered to purchase the property.

The landowner has the opportunity to obtain their own valuation from a valuer of their choosing to compare to the government’s valuation. If there is a difference between the two valuations, the parties engage to try to reach agreement as to price. If agreement is reached, the paperwork is completed to give effect to the sale.

2. If agreement can’t be reached in the manner set out above, the government commences a formal compulsory acquisition process and any argument about valuation and/ or price is ultimately determined by a court.

Option 1 is always the preferred route because it is much quicker (meaning money in your hands sooner) and avoids the stress of litigation. Court action is quite taxing on lawyers, let alone people who are not used to the rigours of litigation. What starts out as a passionate exercise of a person’s rights under law often ends in emotional, exhausted parties to proceedings where the outcome is often not worth the mental toll.

One of the great things about the legislation is that the government has to cover your reasonable legal and valuation costs, so for the most part, you can have independent representation and it won’t cost you anything.

Daggy dads set for walk Fundraiser aims to raise awareness and money for mental health charity EMILY FESZCZUK

A

group of Penrith dads are hitting the pavement to raise funds and encourage honest conversations around mental health.

The five men, from all different walks of life are coming together to take part in the ‘Run for the Herd Virtual Festival’ to support the charity Batyr.

Group member Andy Tsanadis said the team will be walking around the Nepean River, donned in their best ‘daggy dad’ attire.

“The virtual running festival runs from the 25th to the 27th of June but we are doing ours on the Saturday from 7am and will be doing two laps of the Great River Walk to make up 14 kilometres,” he said.

The preventative program focuses on education, teaching students how to engage in positive conversations about

mental health and to empower them to reach out for support when needed.

With young children, the dads want to play an active role in creating an environ-

ment where talking about mental health is just a part of everyday life.

“Our kids are still young but we are looking more towards the future, so our kids can grow up with schools and a social life where there isn’t a stigma attached and where mental health is spoken about openly,” Mr Tsanadis said.

“I think back to when I was in primary and high school when mental health was brought up and we certainly didn’t have programs like this, so we want our kids to be free of shame or feel the need to hide how they’re feeling.”

Mr Tsanadis said they would love the community to support them with some donations or words of encouragement on the day.

“All the money raised will go to Batyr’s preventive and educational mental health programs that are run in schools from years nine to 12,” he said.

“We can also bloody well use the exercise, so if you see us on struggle street on our walk, give us a here come’s trouble!”

Advanced technology used to survey city’s footpaths ALENA HIGGINS

F

ootpaths across Penrith have been assessed for defects as part of a network survey.

Last year, Penrith Council engaged Emu Plains-based Infrastructure Management Group (IMG) to undertake a footpath condition assessment to inform future asset renewal programs and to provide a snapshot of the overall network.

Using a fleet of quad bikes fitted with cameras and computer technology, IMG traversed the city’s 746km-path network, assessing surface roughness, cracking and vertical displacement, with the findings presented to Councillors last week.

According to Council’s Director of City Services Brian Steffen, 28 per cent of the network was deemed “excellent”, 24 per cent “good”, 42 per cent “fair” and six per cent “below the desired service level” or “poor”.

Council previously undertook a complete network survey in 2016, however this time Council included paths within its parks.

“The majority of the grade five footpaths are asphalt and located in our parks,” Mr Steffen told the Policy Review Committee meeting on June 7.

Mr Steffen said 118 displacements more than 50mm in height were found.

Clear as mud: Future of golf course at Wallacia clouded

“They’ll be our priority areas – displacements between 20 and 50mm high,” he said.

“On average, we’re doing better than other councils who have probably twice as many in condition four and condition five.”

Councillor John Thain was impressed by the technology.

“I think it’s really interesting the technology that’s used nowadays, and how quick you can get around the footpaths,” he said, following the presentation.

“And then [to be able to] actually put a program in place, not just for maintenance required, but for preventative maintenance as well.”

Council says no single suburb stood out during the survey, which cost about $70,000 to undertake.

“Council has already commenced repairing priority areas and has included several locations within its 2021/22 path paving renewal program,” a Council spokesman said.

“Some of the defects were development or restoration-related which Council pursues through infrastructure bonds and the relevant utility companies for the pavement to be restored to its previous state.”

Residents are encouraged to report any issues with footpaths via Council’s online service portal.

he Wallacia cemetery proposal remains in limbo after the Catholic Cemeteries Trust threatened legal action against the NSW Government’s decision to consolidate Sydney’s Crown cemetery operators.

Last month, the Government announced it would merge the five existing Sydney-metropolitan Crown cemetery operators, including Catholic Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (CMCT), into one entity, known as OneCrown.

It follows a key recommendation from an independent review into the cemeteries and crematoria needs of NSW. The findings of the report, The 11th Hour – Solving Sydney’s Cemetery Crisis, found the five existing Crown cemetery operators were collectively facing combined unfunded liabilities of more than $300 million and Sydney is fast running out of cemetery space.

CEO of St Johns Park Bowling Club, which operates the Wallacia club and golf course, David Marsh, said the latest development did not change its decision to close the club.

“Regardless of what happened with CMCT and the Government and the Crown in the last few weeks, our position has to remain as is,” he said.

“Purely due to the fact that without being able to purchase the land, and without obtaining DA approval to renovate we will not be able to sustain long-term financial viability at the site.”

Last month, CMCT won its Land and Environment Court appeal to halve the golf course and establish a memorial garden with 40,000 burial plots.

However, following the report, the Government wrote to CMCT and directed it not to progress with its Development Application approval or plans to sell Crown land.

Like many Wallacia residents, Mulgoa MP Tanya Davies remains steadfastly opposed to the proposal.

“I remain wholeheartedly opposed to a cemetery being built at Wallacia Golf Club,” she said on Tuesday.

“I have and will continue to pursue all appropriate avenues to fight for my community at Wallacia and hold the Government to account.”

A spokeswoman for Melinda Pavey, Minister for Water, Property and Housing, said regardless of the outcome of the plan to consolidate operators, “religion and faith will continue to be at the heart of all burials in NSW.” The spokeswoman added that its advice to CMCT to place its Wallacia plans on hold remained.

CMCT did not respond to the Weekender’s request for comment.

lastics like single-use lightweight bags, cotton-buds, straws and stirrers will be phased out as part of a State Government plan to tackle problem plastics.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said more than $356 million will be invested over five years to implement the nation leading plans to protect the environment and promote recycling, which includes rolling out green food waste bins – like those already in Penrith – right across NSW. “We want NSW to be a leader when it comes to reducing waste, maximising recycling and protecting our environment, but we want to do it in a way that drives job creation and innovation,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“The community has high expectations and we need to make sure we put in place the best plans for the future while

also giving businesses and councils enough time to adjust to the phase-outs and find sustainable alternatives.”

Environment Minister Matt Kean said we must reduce the plastics ending up in the environment because we are on track to see more plastic in the ocean than fish by 2050.

“The single-use items we are phasing-out will stop an estimated 2.7 billion items of plastic litter from ending up in our environment and waterways over the next 20 years,” Mr Kean said.

“We can’t keep sending our scraps to languish in landfill when there are huge opportunities to turn our trash into treasure.

“Under our plans, every household will have access to a separate bin for their food and organic waste for the first time in NSW. “This will not only deliver on our commitment to achieve

zero emissions from organics in landfill by 2030, but will also grow our economy by extracting more resources like biogas from our waste.

“In addition, we will lead by example and help stimulate new markets for sustainable products by adopting an ‘if not, why not’ approach to the use of recycled materials in government procurement.”

Small businesses will be supported to transition to new products before the phaseouts come into effect. Exemptions will also be available for members of the community who rely on particular singleuse plastics for disability or health needs.

A statewide education campaign will be rolled out to provide households with clear information on how to get onboard with the new waste programs, and learn how to properly dispose of their food and organic waste.

Unanswered airport questions

I find it impossible to believe that a decision has not been made regarding the configuration of the new western Sydney airport runways. All forms of media have run stories about exactly where the terminal, roads, the business hub and the light rail link will be situated, yet, we are supposed to believe the direction of landings and take-offs still remains undecided. Just more government B.S. I’m afraid. It is rumoured that planes will arrive over Silverdale and take-off over/towards Blacktown, then, for those

flights heading to northern destinations, perform a hairpin turn and head north over the Penrith CBD. Also rumoured, the holding patterns are to encompass the Wollondilly/Campbelltown/Oran Park areas. Surely, the first decision to be made is the direction of take-offs and arrivals. A little honesty, please.

We have COVID basically under control at the moment, but this will probably not be the case after athletes return from the Games. It is very clear that the majority of the Japanese population do not want this event to go ahead, and how can the Olympic Committee run this event when 10,000 volunteers have withdrawn their services. We all know the value of volunteers, and it’s quite clear that they do not wish to risk their health and that of their families and the general population all around the world. Let’s hope common sense prevails and they are cancelled.

Men face reality check Research reveals local blokes aren’t taking their health seriously enough EMILY FESZCZUK

xperts are using Men’s Health Week (June 14-20) as an opportunity to encourage men to make their physical and mental health a priority.

New research from Specsavers has revealed that 43 per cent of men, the equivalent to 2783 in Penrith, will wait until they experience a health issue before booking a check-up, rather than engaging in regular appointments.

Specsavers Optometrist at Westfield Penrith, Angat Bhumbra, said he sees firsthand that men will put off taking care of their eye health.

“I have noticed that especially younger men, aged between 20 and 40 will not tend to come in for regular check-ups if their vision is fine and they are not experiencing any symptoms,” Mr Bhumbra said.

“We do advise everyone to come in every two years because even though you might not have an issue, eye diseases or conditions need to be picked up in the early stages to have a chance to reverse or slow down the process before the damage is done.”

“This area has a lot of tradies so we do see men for example, grinding and getting foreign metal bodies in their eyes which irritates them, but they think it will go

away and only come in weeks later when it is worse,” he said.

“It is similar when they experience red eyes, they tend to think it will get better but in a lot of cases it doesn’t get better but actually needs medical treatment to improve.”

Western Sydney University (WSU) is also trying to raise awareness and highlight essential health services for men during Men’s Health Week.

Dr Neil Hall from WSU Centre for Male Health said the week is an important reminder to reconnect and refocus on the health of men and boys.

“Supporting men to achieve good health is something we can all work towards – a simple conversation between friends can be the start of something positive, so we’re encouraging everyone to get involved,” Dr Hall said.

“Our research has found that young men are starting to seek help and advice more freely but more needs to be done to support all men to reach out for help when they need it.”

Local radio presenter set to release debut novel in July

If you grew up in Penrith in the 1990s or early 2000s, there’s every chance you spent plenty of time at this AMF Bowling Centre on Woodriff Street (also known as Penrith Bowl).

It was one of Penrith’s most popular attractions, with thousands of bowlers every week turning up to compete in both casual games and leagues.

Bowling sleepovers even occurred at the AMF centre for the junior leagues.

The pictured centre closed in 2009, leaving Penrith without a bowling alley until the arrival of a new AMF centre on Batt Street, Jamisontown in 2012.

The AMF name no longer exists in Australia, and in fact has no real connection with the country given it’s an acronym for American Machine and Foundry.

In 2018, all AMF centres including the one in Penrith were re-named Zone Bowling.

enrith come into Friday night’s blockbuster against the Sydney Roosters at BlueBet Stadium on the back of back-to-back defeats for the first time since 2019, and having lost their position on top of the competition table.

This was always going to be a difficult period for the Panthers – the price of success – but the team is through the worst of the scheduling nightmare now and may just benefit from the reality check of slipping to second position.

The cavalry returns this Friday with all of Penrith’s Origin representatives named to take on the Roosters, including Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai who were so missed in the games against the Tigers and Cronulla. The return of Isaah Yeo will also be a significant one given the huge role he now plays in Penrith’s structure.

FRIDAY, JUNE 18 | 7.55PM | BLUEBET STADIUM | REFEREE: ASHLEY KLEIN Not helping the Panthers’ cause was that the last two weeks were on the road. The comfort of home, as well as the returning stars, will make this feel like the Penrith team we all know and love again.

It’s hard to know what to make of the Roosters. Trent Robinson’s side appeared to be cruising to victory when they opened up a 30-4 lead over the Gold Coast last Saturday, only to surrender that lead before a Sam Walker field goal got them home in the dying minutes. They’re the types of games that don’t really feel like wins even though you got the two competition points, and Robinson would be unhappy with the way his side so meekly gave up the commanding lead.

This is a Roosters side that can smash the Raiders 44-16, but a week earlier fall to Brisbane 34-16. Rarely has the inconsist-

ency leaked into a single match but that was certainly the case against the Titans. It’s understandable, however, given the huge disruption the Roosters have dealt with this year. Serious injuries and suspensions have forced Robinson into constant reshuffles, and without continuity, we’re simply not seeing the week-to-week dominance we expect from the Roosters.

The return of James Tedesco for this clash will be huge – fresh from the Blues’ victory over Queensland in Origin I, he’ll be the danger man against Penrith. His ability to pop up anywhere on the field, to create something from nothing and to be the ultimate finisher when there’s a line break or broken play result in him easily topping the list of most dangerous players.

Which is why the key to beating the Roosters is shutting them down early, not allow-

ing for second phase play. This current Roosters side can be frustrated into errors when things don’t go their way, and if the Panthers can get on top early it’s hard to see the boys from Bondi fighting back.

In that same vein the Panthers need to ensure they find the discipline that helped them to the Minor Premiership in 2020 and during their incredible run of wins to start this campaign. Things have slackened in recent weeks, giving away too many penalties and set-restarts.

Get the discipline right and Penrith should have too much talent for the Roosters to contain, especially with so much to prove in the wake of consecutive losses.

Viliame Kikau will miss this clash due to a hamstring injury, while Tyrone May falls out of the top 17.

Tip: Panthers by 12.

CRITTER’S ORIGIN DREAM ! Panthers centre Stephen Crichton still harbours a dream of playing for the Blues. But Crichton has admitted if he’s ever going to get a taste of Origin in the near future, he’s going to have to take his game to another level. While the St Clair junior enjoyed a breakout season in 2020 – named Dally M Centre of the Year – he has struggled to reach the heights of last season largely due to spending several games at fullback in place of Dylan Edwards. “With those Origin boys not here, I’ve got to step up my game as well. I can’t be an average player on the field because that won’t get me anywhere,” Crichton said. ! Penrith fans can scream the joint down all they like, Origin at the end of the season won’t happen. Nor will stopping the comp for anywhere from three to six weeks mid-year so the game’s showpiece can stand alone. Clubs will have to continue to manage the imperfect system of Origin impacting club football. The reality is the best teams usually go on to win the competition and managing the Origin period is simply part of the challenge. Channel Nine don’t want games played on Sundays, so you can forget Origin being played on three consecutive weekends. And an endof-season series opens up a host of new issues that can’t really be overcome. Suck it up and deal with the price of success. !

Pictures of Tyrone May seem to be on dart boards right across the Penrith region and the 24-year-old was even dropped by coach Ivan Cleary for this weekend’s clash with the Roosters. Still, I’m told it’s highly likely May will sign a new deal with Penrith for the 2022 season.

! The Panthers have drifted in TAB’s Premiership betting for the first time this season after the Storm took over top spot on the NRL ladder. Melbourne’s odds have shortened from $3.50 into $3.25 after their win over the Warriors and while Penrith remain title favourites, they have moved out slightly from $2.75 to $2.80 following a second straight loss during the State of Origin period. With 12 tries each, Panthers star Matt Burton and Eels Skipper Clint Gutherson have been the big movers in the

This is always a sad time of year around the Panthers, as we remember the passing of Ben Alexander. Alexander was just 20 when he was killed in a car accident at Colyton on June 21, 1992 – 29 years ago.

YEO: TAKE NOTHING FOR GRANTED NATHAN TAYLOR

enrith have played some fairly big games this season, but perhaps none are more important than tonight’s clash against the Sydney Roosters at BlueBet Stadium.

Staring down the barrel of three straight defeats, Penrith will be desperate to return to form after two lacklustre weeks saw them lose their position at the top of the NRL’s perch.

With their Origin brigade finally back in the line-up, including lock Isaah Yeo, the playing group is confident of turning things around.

“We are fortunate we’ve banked some wins there at the start of the year, but we’re in a competition where winning is important and you don’t want to be continuously losing,” Yeo said on Wednesday.

“After back to back losses we’re coming up against a really strong outfit in the Roosters and you don’t want to make that three [losses] in a row.

“It all starts with our preparation at the beginning of the week and it’s something we’ve done well. We are fortunate enough that we’ve banked a few wins, but you don’t want to lose in this competition.”

The club’s latest defeat – just their second all year – came last Friday night against Cronulla at Kogarah Oval. Down 18-0 at half-time, Penrith produced a spirited

comeback to level proceedings before outgoing Sharks halfback Shaun Johnson got his side home with a miraculous field goal in the dying stages.

Yeo, who was rested after playing a tough Origin match in Townsville 48 hours earlier, said it was tough watching from the sidelines.

“I’m a pretty quiet watcher actually… I don’t talk throughout the game, I keep that pretty well inside me,” he admitted.

“It was disappointing to lose. I thought it was definitely a game of two halves. I thought we fixed everything we needed to from the first half, but it was too little too late.”

Penrith’s match against the Roosters tonight is expected to be a sell-out, with thousands of fans hoping a near-full strength line-up will get the ‘good guys’ home.

Yeo said the side can’t rest on its laurels, even though it will be significantly boosted by the return of some big-name players.

“You can’t take any team for granted… you’d like to think with those players coming back in it will help a little bit, but you can’t take that for granted,” he said.

“You still have to work hard and do all those little things right to set up games. The Roosters are a quality side across the park… they’ll be looking to come out here and make us lose three in a row.

“We’ve prepared really well this week and we understand we’re up for a big match, it should be a cracker.”

Why Melbourne are the biggest threat to Penrith’s premiership dream

ttack is only half of the game, but when it’s Melbourne’s attack it’s a pretty darn good half.

I had the privilege of calling Melbourne against the Warriors last Sunday, from a commentary box right beside coach Craig Bellamy’s coaching seat. We were separated by a piece of glass.

Glancing from play to coach, seeing attack and reaction, provided a pretty good gauge that this wasn’t Melbourne’s best effort. Still they won the game 42-16. It took them past Penrith to top of the table The modern game is all about possession, momentum, execution and relentlessness. Melbourne play like those words fall out of the cereal box at every breakfast.

As Melbourne found their rhythm against the Warriors, Nathan from the Fox Sports Lab was repeatedly in my ear.

“Matty, that’s the most points any team has scored through 14 rounds in the NRL era,” he advised.

“The Storm are now only the third team since 1908 to have a differential of plus 300 through this many games,” he added, before it was pegged back by a final Ken Maumalo try for the Warriors.

“Melbourne has scored 40 points for the eighth time his season. The record is nine – Eels in ’01 , Broncos in ’98.”

At this rate, the Storm are going to blow those Parramatta and Brisbane teams out of the water.

Obviously, the way the game has changed helps, but Melbourne have to execute that. They’ve done so while handing NRL debuts to Dean Ieremia, Trent Loiero and Tyson Smoothy. They’ve used relative newcomers in Cooper Johns, Aaron Booth, Chris Lewis, Aaron Pene, Isaac Lumelume and Darryn Schonig. They’ve handled the significant absence of Dale Finucane, Harry Grant and Ryan Papenhuyzen. They’re without a bloke called Cameron Smith.

A big off-field team demands perfection – Frank Ponissi, Stephen Kearney, Marc Brentnall, Aaron Bellamy, Ryan Hinchcliffe, Ryan Hoffman… and the bloke on the other side of that glass window, riding every attacking movement like a conductor builds to the crescendo.

CLEARY STANDS BY DROPPED MATE P

anthers fans haven’t seen the last of Tyrone May in first grade – that’s according to his long-time friend and teammate Nathan Cleary.

The 24-year-old utility, who started in place of Cleary in Penrith’s two recent losses, was dropped to the extended bench for Friday night’s must-win clash against the Sydney Roosters at BlueBet Stadium.

It will mark the first time all season that May, a Minchinbury Jets junior, won’t feature in the NRL. Speaking with Extra Time on Wednesday, Cleary said his housemate is determined to regain his spot in the side after a less than desirable few weeks as starting half.

“T-May is doing alright, he’s one of those guys that will see this as an opportunity to get better,” he said.

“It’s always disappointing when you get dropped but I’ve got full faith that he’ll do really well in NSW Cup and try and work his way back in.”

The Samoan international will be replaced on the interchange bench by fellow local junior Izack Tago, who scored his first NRL try during last week’s nail-biting loss to the Sharks.

Cleary said the 19-year-old backrower deserved to be picked this week after his eye-catching performance against Cronulla.

“T-May not being there is probably more of a case of Izack Tago working his way into the side after a great performance on Friday,” he said.

“He’s a really exciting young talent and it’s good to see him get another start.”

Meanwhile, Cleary will play his first game since Penrith’s disappointing two-game losing streak started when he lines up against the fifth-placed Sydney Roosters this evening.

The 23-year-old NSW halfback, who suffered a nasty cut under his right eye during Origin I, was one of five Panthers players who didn’t back up from the battle in Townsville 48 hours earlier.

Cleary confirmed he’s a certain starter in tonight’s blockbuster game, even though he’ll still be sporting several stitches on his face.

How Brian To’o is silencing the doubters with his running game

A

t the start of the season there wouldn’t have been many pundits selecting Penrith’s Brian To’o to start on the wing for New South Wales in Origin I. While he’s been dynamic at club level, there were considerable doubts about his size and ability to match it with what people thought was a traditional Origin winger – big, tall, overhead and powerful.

It’s even believed that Brad Fittler questioned his choice to select To’o in the big game because of his match up on Xavier Coates.

Earlier in the season the winger made three errors against the Broncos as they targeted him with high balls against Coates, but in typical To’o fashion, he more than made up for it on the ground, with 272 metres, 10 tackle busts and a line-break.

While his single game stat lines are impressive, looking at his numbers across the whole year absolutely stunned me, having him in the side literally guarantees you field position.

The Mt Druitt boy has run for more than three whole kilometres with ball in hand this season including Origin I – well clear of the next best.

While his overall distance covered is impressive enough, the fact that over a third of this ground made has come post-contact proves his true value at the highest level – the kid is a machine.

Turns out that machine still works equally well when making the step up to Origin, his 233 metres made, two try performance couldn’t have quietened the doubters more, but that’s something To’o’s becoming familiar with.

He was famously cut from Panthers’ Harold Matthews side at 15 due to his size, what an oversight that would have been if To’o was lost to the game from that decision.

To’o’s Forrest Gump like ability to just keep on running could even help deliver a Penrith premiership and the Blues an Origin victory in the upcoming months.

The running man has well and truly arrived, I’m predicting that it’s just the start for the 22-year-old Panther.

After two unexpected losses in a row, Penrith may not regain top spot again this season. At the moment, and with a favourable draw, the Storm look like they have the number one spot locked up. Another loss by Penrith over the next two games against either the Roosters or Parramatta could see the Eels and Rabbitohs take second spot away from them. One thing in Penrith’s favour is they still have a bye and a guaranteed two points up their sleeve.

Sydney Roosters captain Boyd Cordner has announced his immediate retirement from rugby league. Cordner represented the Kangaroos on 20 occasions, including two World Cup victories, New South Wales 16 times, including three series wins and his club the Roosters in 183 games. here’s no doubt that Penrith have some truly exciting juniors who will soon be ready for first grade.

However what the last two games showed, was that you sometimes need some experienced players who can step in and make a difference in key positions.

They don’t have to be ‘marquee’ level players or cost a fortune to make a difference either.

Knowing that any budget Panthers have will not be huge, I thought I’d pick a ‘wildcard’ and four other experienced ‘buys’ which could join the team next season.

1. Anthony Milford – ‘Are you mad?’ I hear you all say. He’s terrible, not worth the money or the risk but if you could pick him up for $300,000 or so, he could be the wildcard this team is looking for. Milford can play a variety of positions in the backline and in the right environment could really flourish. Penrith could very well provide the structure and stability Milford needs to find his feet again.

2. Phoenix Crossland – Crossland is a clever halfback who has shown plenty of promise with the Knights this season, filling in for the injured Mitchell Pearce.

3. Connor Watson – Which team couldn’t use a player like Watson? He is always looking to make things happen whenever he has the ball in his hands.

4. Curtis Sironen – A tough no-nonsense second-rower who has ball playing skills to boot.

merican comedian Arj Barker will be bringing an hour of riotous comedy to Penrith and the Blue Mountains this July with his new show, ‘Arj Barker Comes Clean’.

Playing festivals around the globe before COVID put a stop to international travel, Arj is ready to delight audiences around the country after having a forced break from performing.

“I have been non-stop since I started comedy, I never really took much time off, so it was weird at first but then I settled in and was able to really rest up, and now I feel recharged and ready to unleash,” Arj said.

“It will be a pleasure to get out to Penrith, I always have a great time at the clubs as it is more of a relaxed vibe and the Blue Mountains Theatre is beautiful, so I look forward to it.”

Spilling some home truths, vague truths and information the audience won’t be ready to hear, Arj will bring his hilarity to the stage.

“As usual I try to make it hilarious all the way through while I discuss some real stuff I am interested in and what is important to me like my personal life,” he said.

“I also talk about other subjects like UFOs, which I already had in this show

and then all this stuff came up in the news subsequently, so it was just a coincidence and good timing.”

Announcing he was getting a divorce last year, Arj said he has used his comedy to get through it.

“I talk about the breakdown of my marriage, which is something that resonates with a lot of people, and I am not trying to make the audience depressed or anything, I have a positive outlook on the whole thing,” he said.

“I get to discuss my life in front of 500 therapists at once, it is kind of cathartic to tell a whole group of people that your marriage is failing and make jokes about it and laugh, because life is hard and the ability to laugh at your struggles is a gift and something many people understand is crucial in getting through stuff.”

Whether he is telling the whole truth or only partial, you are guaranteed to get true belly laughs in the best hour of BS around.

Check your feet daily Since neural sensation is altered, it is important to check your feet by looking at them and feeling for any changes. If you find it difficult to see the bottom, a mirror can be helpful or ask a relative to assist.

Keep your feet dry Dry thoroughly between your toes and avoid leaving shoes outside in the winter frost where they can become damp. Mois-

Why our goals, not money, need to be the focus of investment choices

W

hen making an investment decision, I believe the most crucial consideration is; what am I trying to achieve with this investment – what is the end goal? As I say regularly, the aim of the game isn’t to make as much money as possible, it is to make sure we achieve our goals.

It is also important to look at how our lives are likely to change over the length of the investment and determine if this might affect the appropriateness of the investment choice.

The length of time of an investment greatly affects the exposure to growth; short-term investments should have a low exposure to growth. The logic being, if an investment with a short-term investment horizon experiences a bad year (which is inevitable), it won’t have the chance to recover with subsequent, above average years.

Therefore, it stands to reason, if you are saving for something that is in the short to medium term, for example a holiday or the children’s education, you would look for an investment that is defensive in nature.

A cash-based investment might be appropriate if you are looking at a 12 month time frame, where a defensive managed fund might be the way to go if it is a three to five year time horizon.

In Australia, we love property, and investment properties are a wonderful way to build wealth for the long-term.

They provide capital growth, we are able to gear our investments with low interest

rates and most people are comfortable with an investment property.

Properties are very suitable for people with long investment horizons, who are looking to build wealth for goals at least 10

years into the future. Properties also have what we call stepped growth. This refers to the fact that the market often sits still or has low growth for a number of years, then dramatically surging before flattening with the process repeating.

If you hold a property for a number of years you will benefit from a number of these surges. A short-term holding may encompass a period of only low or no growth. High entry and exit costs of property also lends itself to long-term investments.

Before we enter a long-term investment, especially one that requires an ongoing commitment, we should look at our own situation.

Will my income or expenses change greatly? If so, will I still be able to commit to this investment? Starting a family for instance, can throw a spanner in the works of an investment strategy.

As we get to retirement, we should move towards high income bearing investments that are liquid. Our investments are now our income source, so we should structure them to best achieve this goal.

Different investments have different strengths and weaknesses. Matching our investments to what we are trying to accomplish will best achieve our goals – this is the aim of the game.

D

oes your pet have bad breath?

It’s hard to believe that more than 85 per cent of dogs and cats over four years old have some form of periodontal disease. While many people believe that bad breath is normal for their furry friends, it can be an indication of a problem and one of the most common diseases that we see in animals.

Any dog or cat can be affected but dental disease is more common in smaller breed dogs with small faces such as Cavaliers, Poodles and Shi Tzus.

There are various signs you can look out for such as • Bad Breath • Discoloured and/or loose teeth • Excessive drooling, sometimes blood-stained inflamed or receding gums • Dropping of food from the mouth when eating, or reluctant to chew or eat at all, especially hard food.

• Pain when handled around the head • Facial swelling • Pawing at the mouth When food particles and bacteria are allowed to accumulate in the mouth, it can form plaque. When plaque combines with saliva, it forms a hard substance

called calculus. This causes gum irritation and inflammation which is known as gingivitis.

After a period of time, the calculus builds up under the gum line and separates it from the teeth – at this point in time, this is irreversible disease of the teeth and will lead to bone loss and formation of pus between the gum and teeth. Advanced periodontal disease can be very painful for your pet and often the best course of treatment is surgically removing the teeth.

Periodontal disease is best prevented and there are several things that you can do to make sure your dog or cat has a clean and pain free mouth. The best thing you can do is brush your pets’ teeth daily but many animals will not tolerate this.

ocial media is one of the most popular advertising channels for businesses, particularly startups and small businesses that do not have a large budget.

However, changes have come to the advertising industry as platforms focus more on customers’ privacy.

Apple’s iOS operating system changes are one of the most recent developments that will redesign the social media advertising landscape. Apple now requires developers to request the users’ permission to track their online activity, which is how Facebook and other ad-based social media platforms collect information about users for ad targeting.

With users now becoming private, it poses a challenge for small businesses relying on social media advertising for their survival. Facebook itself raised its concern about how the tracking changes will affect small businesses, making ad targeting more challenging.

Aside from Apple, Google (specifically Chrome) is also saying goodbye to thirdparty cookies by 2022. This means that digital advertising will now have to rely more on privacy-aware data sources.

What can businesses do to deal with these changes? Should they stop advertising on social media altogether? Here are some ideas: 1. Segment your audience and target Android users only. You can also target other users except for those using iOS devices.

2. Verify your website’s domain to prevent any future disruption of your ad campaigns. This will ensure that the data received by your pixels is accurately delivered to Facebook.

3. Take advantage of your eight Facebook pixel events. Choose which pixel events and custom conversions you want to focus on because Facebook will only receive data from eight pixel events per domain.

4. Integrate third-party tracking and retargeting tools. For instance, you can choose to rely on Google Analytics to monitor your campaigns.

These privacy changes left many business owners and marketers concerned about their future ability to run ads, target users, generate leads, and track conversions from social media platforms.

It always has a great atmosphere; the organisers are always doing an amazing job. The course is always very tricky and challenging, and I love paddling here in terms of training, but racing is quite hard.

The women’s C1 event will premiere at next month’s Olympics and, with Fox doubling up in both the K1 and C1, she

will have the chance to win two medals in Tokyo.

“It will be very special for us C1 women to be in Tokyo together and to sit on that start line as the first women to race at the Olympic Games for canoe,” Fox said.

“Every race we do – K1 or C1 – I take a lot of learnings and confidence from, I keep the good bits and ditch the bad bits. But I think the competition is super fierce and all the girls have really lifted, and everyone is looking fit and fast.

“It’s really exciting to be back here and racing and to see where we are at after being away for so long.”

Fox will return to the water this weekend when the World Cup arrives in Germany.

eonay’s Jessica Fox has set a strong mark ahead of the Tokyo Olympic Games over the weekend, taking home gold and bronze at the 2021 ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup 1 in Prague.

The dual Olympic medallist, who also celebrated her 27th birthday last weekend, won gold in the women’s C1 on Sunday, after already securing bronze in the women’s K1 final on Saturday.

Just over a month out from the Tokyo Games, the four-time C1 and three-time K1 world champion showed her class and smashed it in the women’s C1 final,

winning in a time of 105.15 seconds. It was the first time back on top of the podium of a world-class event for Fox since her double gold and overall World Cup win at the same location in August 2019.

“It was definitely the best run of the weekend for me and I’m really pleased to have put down a clean run on such a challenging course and to improve on the semi especially. I’m really pleased by that run,” Fox said after the race.

Fox had qualified for the C1 semi-final with a second place in the heat on Friday but added a bit of suspense in the semifinal on Sunday morning, when she copped six seconds in penalties and qualified for the top 10 final in eighth place.

Goodwin rides wave of success NATHAN TAYLOR

T

alented BMX rider Luke Goodwin has only been competing in the sport for a short period of time, but he’s already amassed some impressive achievements.

The latest recipient of the Penrith Valley Sports Foundation (PVSF) Senior Sports Star Award, the 17-year-old is a popular member of the Penrith BMX Club and Western Sydney Academy of Sport, and has been competing since 2015.

Already this year, Luke has been battling it out in the 2021 BMX NSW/ ACT State Series.

During Round 5 action last month, the Cambridge Park resident placed seventh in the 17-24 Cruiser Men category and set a personal best track time of 40.788 seconds.

His other results this season included a fifth place finish in Round 4; 10th place finish in Round 3; eighth place finish in Round 2; and a sixth place finish in the opening round.

During last year’s BMX NSW/ACT State Series, Luke finished seventh

overall – a super impressive result for having only been racing for five years at the time.

Outside of his BMX triumphs, Luke recently took part in the 2021 Werrington Zone Cross Country Carnival where he placed 11th, just missing out on the Sydney West Cross Country Carnival by three places.

Luke’s recent PVSF award only proves he has a bright future ahead both on and off the bike.

Next Friday, June 25, the St Marys Saint will return to the State of Origin arena for the second straight year after being named in the NSW Blues side to take on Queensland at Sunshine Coast Stadium.

Togatuki, who will be starting in the backrow for NSW, said she was shocked by her selection last month.

“I honestly didn’t think I was going to make it,” she admitted.

“Last year I went into camp with an injury and got less than nine minutes on the field.

I just felt I didn’t do enough to be in that Blues jersey again this year.

“The big goal was to get a second shot at that jersey to prove that I do deserve to be there.”

Like NSW in the men’s State

of Origin series, the women’s Blues side are also out for revenge against Queensland after they lost last November’s lone Origin match 24-18.

Togatuki said seeing what NSW did to the Maroons last Wednesday night in Townsville has inspired them to go out and do the same.

“I was stoked for the boys that they bounced back from last year’s series defeat. We want to bounce back from our loss as well,” she said.

“A bunch of us girls got up the next morning after Origin I and did our own training session. We messaged each other saying that win by the boys motivated us. We feel like some redemption as well.

“My Dad is flying up to Queensland for the game, which is honestly a massive shock. I’ll probably cry when I run out.”

Next Friday’s Women’s Origin game will be broadcast on Channel Nine and Fox League.

hen Sarah Togatuki began her footy career with the Glenmore Park Brumbies at age 17, she had to be smuggled out to games and training by her cousins because she knew her parents wouldn’t approve of her playing rugby league.

“According to my parents, footy was a big ‘no-no’ in my culture.

“My cousins used to sneak me out to Glenmore Park footy grounds for training and games. They’d lie to my mum’s face saying they were taking me to study, but I wasn’t studying.”

It wasn’t until Togatuki’s Brumbies side made the Grand Final that year, that she finally came clean. She said it took many years for her parents to approve of her newfound career, especially her hardworking father.

“Dad didn’t come to any of my games. The only time he started believing that girls in our culture do belong in the game was when I debuted for the Sydney Roosters NRLW side in 2018,” Togatuki said.

“It wasn’t until I made my mark in the NRLW that Dad started showing up for me.

He’s my biggest reason, my biggest why.”

Speaking with the Weekender, Penrith District U15 head coach Cheryl Hornsby said it was a remarkable achievement in what was her first year in charge of the powerhouse team.

“This is the first year I’ve had these girls and I can’t thank the Penrith Association enough for giving me the opportunity to be the head coach of this amazing team,” she said.

“Heading into the weekend, I felt confident with the team I had.

The girls are brilliant and were a truly great team to coach.”

Hornsby said she felt Penrith had the team to win.

“Looking back, I was nervous heading into the competition, but I was quietly confident we could bring it home – and we did,” she said.

Penrith District also sent an U17 team to compete in the Championship division, with that side finishing 14th after 19 games, recording eight wins and one draw.

The Senior State Titles were not held last year due to the pandemic.

Hockey upgrade New clubhouse and amenities building set to open NATHAN TAYLOR

t’s been several years in the making, but the Nepean Hockey Association will officially open their new state-ofthe-art clubhouse and amenities building this Saturday morning.

The local association is inviting members of the public – including current and former players and friends – to attend tomorrow’s grand opening celebration at the Western Sydney Hockey Centre in Kingswood.

Penrith MP Stuart Ayres will officially declare the new building open at 11am on June 19 before a huge day of hockey gets underway at the O’Connell Street facility.

Last June, the Nepean Hockey Association received $975,000 in funding from the NSW Government’s Greater Sydney Sports Facility Fund to construct the new clubhouse and complete the transformation of the facility, located at Western Sydney University’s Kingswood Campus.

Following major field, seating and scoreboard upgrades in 2019, the new clubhouse – which includes amenities, change rooms, canteen and a meeting room – is regarded as the final piece of the puzzle.

Chairman of the Turf Committee Patrick Hurley said the new clubhouse and amenities building, which was built off-site by Ausco in Queensland, will be a game-changer for hockey in the local area.

“The building was only completed a couple of weeks ago, but the feedback so far has been tremendous,” he said.

“When we signed the lease with Western Sydney University three years ago, we had a wish list of things we wanted to complete, and we managed to tick all those boxes.

“As a result of the new facilities, we’re now able to host State Championships and those sorts of activities.”

The new clubhouse and amenities building boasts a unique design and build compared to other sporting facilities across the state.

“The association have chosen to use a modular design, which will allow them to develop the facility relatively quickly compared to traditional construction techniques,” Mr Ayres said last year.

Around the grounds CRICKET: Former Penrith Cricket Club head coach Michael Wholohan will continue his long and decorated career as a member of the Hawkesbury Cricket Club next season and beyond. Wholohan, who ended a four-decade association with Penrith last month, will join the Hawks as the club’s new head coach. “Michael has over 20 years of coaching experience and will be somebody that all our players will benefit from on and off the field,” the club said in a statement. Wholohan’s son, Jake, also plays for the Hawkesbury club.

Penrith are yet to announce a replacement for the local cricketing icon.

AFL: The GWS Giants and North Melbourne have played out a rare draw in Round 13 of the AFL last weekend.

The 94-94 deadlock last Sunday afternoon was the first draw in the AFL all season after the Giants produced a massive final quarter to pull off the unlikely result. GWS, who remain in the hunt for a top eight spot, will take on Carlton this Saturday night at Giants Stadium.

Competing at the 2021 HART Senior State Titles over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, Penrith District Netball Association finished on top in the U15 Championship division with an incredible 16 wins, one draw and two losses to their name.

It was the third time the same group were deemed State Champions after winning the U13 Junior State Title in 2019 and U12 Junior State Title in 2018.

Run by Netball NSW, the Senior State Titles is the principle state competition for athletes across NSW aged from 15 years.

Liverpool City hosted players from the Opens Championship Division, the U17 and U15 Championship and Division 2, while Bankstown hosted Opens Division 2 and the U17 and U15 Divisions 3 and 4.
