Plans revealed for shops New centre welcomed, but residents raise concerns over apartment proposal ALENA HIGGINS

housands of Glenmore Park residents living in the suburb’s newest estate will no longer have to trek to the Town Centre for supplies, with a long- awaited shopping village slated for Mulgoa Rise.

Plans for the development – to be located at 90- 98 Glenmore Ridge Drive – include a supermarket, childcare centre, liquor store, car wash, gym, medical centre, pharmacy and swim centre.

Specialty shops, including restaurants, a cafe, bakery, newsagent, butcher and associated retail services are also proposed for the centre, which will be bordered by Darug Avenue and Deerubbin Drive.

Residents have been crying out for more facilities within walking distance of the new sub- division for years, with the vast majority of Glenmore Park’s amenities clustered together in the Town Centre, about a 40-minute walk away.

Resident Gary Freeman said the promised shopping centre was a welcome addition and a major selling feature when he and his partner Karen purchased their land in 2014.

“I think everyone has been craving a local coffee shop, so to be getting that and

“The Rise has grown rapidly over the last five years and with the further housing development that is coming, the planned stores will have the population to support their businesses.”

But not everyone is happy with the proposal, specifically plans for 147 residential units to be built above the centre.

Tisha Elliott, who lives across from

the subject site, said apartments were never part of the equation and she is now contemplating selling due to traffic, crime and privacy concerns.

“The apartments are the killer,” she said.

“We expected shops but we didn’t expect this magnitude of shops and the apartments don’t belong here.”

CD Architects lodged the $47 million Development Application for the fourstorey mixed- use development, labelled

the ‘Glenmore Village’, with Penrith Council late last month.

It is unclear which supermarket chain will feature at the village – with speculation none of the major players can be in such close proximity to the Town Centre, which saw Coles and Aldi join Woolworths in 2017. Neither CD Architects nor developer Mintus responded to the Weekender’s requests for more information or an anticipated construction date.

Fitness centre in sudden closure, with memberships transferred to World Gym

enrith’s gym wars have claimed another victim with Jamisontownbased Oxigen Fitness to close its doors today.

Oxigen members were shocked when the gym announced on Facebook last Friday that it would close within a week.

Some members have expressed frustration at the way the announcement was handled.

Orchard Hills resident, Mark McLean signed up to Oxigen just over a week ago and said it’s “disgusting” that they would take his money knowing that the closure was imminent.

“I’m pissed off about it, no one can say that at that point they wouldn’t have known,” he said.

Oxigen has entered into an agreement with World Gym, with the Peachtree Road-based fitness centre to take over Oxigen memberships.

Mr McLean said this was a “ridiculous idea” and felt as though he was being forced to sign up to a gym he had no interest in attending.

Oxigen General Manager Sam Karim said the decision to close had not come lightly, and assured members that whilst World

Gym had acquired the memberships and direct debit information, memberships there can not commence until the individual has given authority to continue payment.

“I took over the business a year and a half ago, I knew it was struggling but I had big dreams, I invested a lot of money but unfortunately with monthly rent of about $38,000 on top of staff wages and maintenance costs it just wasn’t turning around,” he said.

“The building owners gave me an ultimatum, saying ‘if you don’t pay the rent by the end of this month we will change the locks’, I hit panic mode, I didn’t want to make everyone panic because it is home for a lot of people.”

Former Manager Sarah Jean said she was saddened by the closure, as the tight knit gym was like one big family.

“Everyone knew everyone and that’s what made it so great,” she said.

“It wasn’t good how everyone found out but it was never going to be easy.”

Representatives from World Gym will be on site at Oxigen until its closure later today. For members who are happy to merge, they are able to attend World Gym where they can officially sign over their membership. Those who don’t wish to continue can cancel their memberships.

t is extraordinary that in 2019, a journalist or commentator has to write a piece about freedom of the press.

And yet here we are, dealing with the fallout of Australian Federal Police raids on the ABC and a News Corp journalist last week, raids that have rocked the very foundations of press freedom and are threatening to rob the wider public of stories that are very much in their interest now and in the future.

It has been humbling over the past week to see so much support for the media from the wider public, whose trust and faith in journalists has eroded, somewhat unfairly, over the past decade, to the point where the industry’s future has time and again been hit with redundancies and threats over its very existence.

The reality of the media is this – there’s some rogue operators, just like there’s rogue doctors, truck drivers and carpet cleaners, but in the main, journalists are still striving for what the foundation of their job describes – providing truth and information to their audience.

In 2019, the media holds a mirror up to society more than ever before thanks to algorithms that tell us which stories you want to see, hit counters that tell us what’s working and what’s not and comment sections that require a hard whiskey to read at times.

The sad reality is that more people would rather read a story about Kim Kardashian than protests in Hong Kong or the political divide in Thailand.

Editors have undisputable figures to back that up, yet face criticism from readers who claim gutter celebrity stories is not what they want to read at all. It’s a difficult road to navigate.

But anyone who spends a lot of time reading the papers, watching news broadcasts and browsing websites would know there’s still some very good journalism being produced in Australia, as the articles at the subject of the raids last week proves.

Last week’s raids, and laws that place the onus on journalists to prove an article was in the public interest should they be charged with an offence for publishing secret information, put real journalism in Australia at enormous risk.

Media organisations, already facing extraordinary budget pressures and navigating an unpredictable digital landscape, will question themselves and the risks of publishing articles more than ever before; and the only losers out of that is the wider public.

The laws must be changed to protect journalists, while also ensuring national security is safeguarded.

The media, of course, has lessons to learn out of this whole debacle as well.

There is no question that the integrity of the industry has been battered and bruised in recent years, partly because of those rogue elements I mentioned earlier.

Unfortunately, in their desperation for survival, too many organisations have crossed lines they never would have before, and produced tabloid journalism that is embarrassing and disappointing.

But above the bottom of the barrel stuff that still places a black eye on the media as a whole, there is some terrific journalism being produced.

The stories at the heart of last week’s raids prove that.

No, we should not have a media that can write what they want, when they want, without proper investigation and fact checking. Nor should we have a media, however, that is gagged from reporting the truth under the guise of national security, when the public’s right to know trumps everything else.

In the uncertain world in which we now live, it’s easy make ‘national security’ a throwaway line that frightens off journalists and media organisations.

It’s important we strike a balance here, because the moment you start to gag the media, you put in place steps towards tyranny.

One of the first tasks of the re- elected Morrison government needs to be finding that balance in revised legislation, and ensuring that freedom of the press is protected. None of us want to live in a country where our media is so tightly controlled that the public’s right to know is nothing but an afterthought.

nstagram influencers. You either love them or you loathe them.

From business collaborations and networking, to simply getting paid to take a selfie, it’s a glamorous life in the spotlight, but is it as easy as it looks?

The Weekender checked in with some of Penrith’s most well- known social media stars, whose influence trumps even some of Australia’s most well-known celebrities.

Glenmore Park resident Maggie De Jesus has some serious clout, boasting just shy of 200,000 Instagram followers and working with some of the nation’s most prestigious brands.

“I love making content and taking photos, it’s my thing and I’m always in front of the camera, so to get paid for something you love doing is so much fun,” she said.

The 23-year-old banks a whopping $850 per post and has received free holidays, meals and clothes as well as consistent modelling opportunities.

With just about every millennial addicted to social media, the power of influencers is second to none.

But despite this, it remains one of the most dogged professions and influencers

bear the brunt of harsh online trolls and hurtful comments.

Jamisontown’s fitness influencer Rachel Boler, who has almost 65,000 followers, said this is an ugly reality for most.

“At first I really took it to heart but now I just try to joke around with it but there was a time I was receiving death threats; it’s definitely not easy,” she said.

Jordan Springs lifestyle blogger, Emma Giacca is new to the game but with her follower count quickly growing, pairing with well-known brands like Zoo Clothing and Happy Way, she’s now earning enough money to say goodbye to her day job and comfortably support herself.

Two former St Marys Senior High School students Kaela Tavares and Samantha Rayner have both just returned from a fully expenses paid trip to Bali on behalf of renowned online clothing brand Boohoo.

Ms Rayner holds almost half a million followers with Ms Tavaras just behind with about 420,000 followers.

This overpowers the likes of Australian celebrities such as Guy Sebastian who has just over 300,000 followers or the Kyle and Jackie O Show which sits at about 250,000.

Whilst all professions have ups and downs, the women agreed that despite the stigmas and scrutiny, they wouldn’t give up their new lifestyle for the world.

Bin that earns you cash New collection service takes Return and Earn scheme to another level NICOLA BARTON

ecyclers behold – a new blue bin system is available that will conveniently convert your containers into cash right from your doorstep.

As part of the Return and Earn scheme, Prestons Container Deposit Centre, operated by Nepean Distributors Group, has come up with an easy solution that’s good for both your pocket and the environment.

The home collection service is free and works by locals signing up online to receive a large Otto bin, which is tagged with your name and address.

Once the bin is full, you simply book in for a pick up online, it is collected and the money is distributed into your nominated bank account.

Getting down to collection points can be difficult when you’re running a busy household, which is why the concept is quickly becoming popular.

Werrington County resident Louise Mooney said she jumped at the idea after hearing about it in a community group online.

“We’ve had two collections so far and just about to book in our third,” she said.

“It’s been really good, I never worried with the cans and that before because it

was too much effort and there’s always a line up. Now the kids are using it to save up for a monkey bar set, it’s great pocket money.”

Ms Mooney said it took about one week for the money to be deposited into her account. Her last collection earned her kids about $35.

Security measures are in place to ensure the bins don’t get stolen, with residents giving the collectors permission to enter their property.

The day before a pick up, an email notification is sent, to which the homeowner then replies with the location of their bin.

Nepean Distributors Managing Director Anthony Morrissey said it’s also a great way for organisations to fundraise.

“We already had this kind of service for school fundraisers but there’s a lot of people who can’t get to the scheme so we thought let’s come up with a solution for them,” he said.

“When you book a pick up now customers can say they want to allocate this many containers to this charity, so we deal with quite a few different charities – the one out in Penrith being Our Community Pantry.”

Little-known trial could pave the way for Uber-like service to reduce parking pain NICOLA BARTON

niversity students are calling for a new on- demand public transport service to be trialled locally, with Penrith Station’s parking woes forcing them to attend classes two hours early just to ensure they secure a spot.

Last week more commuter parking was introduced on the Northern side of the station but with an increasing population and Penrith workers desperate for all day parking, spaces are still completely full by 9.30am.

A new on- demand public transport service, Cooee Busways, aims to reduce the amount of commuters needing to park at the station, by using an Uber-like app.

The shuttle, which is currently only available in Schofields, covers the immediate surrounding areas and aims to slash the scheduling and stopping times that come with a regular bus service.

21-year-old North Penrith resident Sophie Allen currently travels to the University of Sydney, where she studies a Bachelor of Arts majoring in English.

Ms Allen is forced to attend class two hours early if she wishes to get a park at the station.

work my schedule around,” she told the Weekender.

“If I went to the station any later I wouldn’t be able to find a park.”

Due to the limited amount of all day parking in the Penrith CBD, workers are being forced to use commuter car parks, leaving even less space for students who don’t start as early.

Ms Allen said introducing a Cooee Busways service in Penrith would be particularly beneficial for students like herself.

“It’s so much more convenient and would be amazing to not have to work around the car park,” she said.

Cooee Busways is delivered under the State Government’s On Demand public transport program.

The app updates in real time to let passengers know when they’ll be arriving at their chosen drop-off point.

Once they are on the service, pick-ups are limited until all passengers are dropped off.

TransportNSW has advised that whilst it is not intended to extend the service to additional areas at this stage, it will monitor the service closely and will take all customer feedback into consideration, when determining if changes should be made in the future.

Residents push for disused railway tunnel to provide “missing link” to Mountains EMILY FESZCZUK

disused railway tunnel in Glenbrook has had an intriguing history, and now a group of campaigners want to give it new life.

The tunnel was once used to store ammunition and mustard gas in World War II before being used for mushroom farming.

Adam Podolski says re-opening the tunnel would be great for tourism while providing a cycle and walkway for residents, and connecting Penrith with the Blue Mountains.

“I grew up in Emu Plains so always knew it was there but mainly now riding my bike to work from Glenbrook and trying to get up and down the hill is a bit of a nightmare so it would be great for locals,” Mr Podolski said.

“A lot of people don’t even know it exists or they know it as a mushroom tunnel with no use to anyone, but it would be a great thing to open up and create the missing link between Emu Plains, Lapstone and Glenbrook.”

A Penrith City Council spokesperson said that a push for funding from the NSW Government would have to happen.

“The tunnel has been raised and looked at previously as part of the Blue Mountains Eastern Escarpment Plan and would require substantial investment to upgrade

to a standard that is fit for public access,” the spokesperson said.

“As the tunnel is located wholly within Blue Mountains LGA (connecting Lapstone and Glenbrook) the project would require backing outside of Penrith’s scope.”

Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said he would be talking to new Lands Minister Melinda Pavey about possible options.

“If the tunnel is to be opened up in the future it will require both investment and collaboration between state agencies and Council to make that happen,” he said.

“I’ve met with local interest groups who support opening the tunnel up to the public. Any reopening must ensure the tunnel is safe and manageable for locals and tourists.”

New parking open Penrith’s North Street car park is now open with 243 new car parking spaces close to the City Centre.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said Council is delivering more parking options for the community.

“The construction of the new North Street car park is an important step in Council’s plans to provide more parking in Penrith, close to businesses, transport and services,” Cr Fowler said.

“Plans for a new multi- deck car park at Soper Place are also progressing, with construction expected to begin in late 2019.

“Once complete, the two new car parks at Soper Place and North Street will increase the number of car parking spaces in the city centre by more than 800 spots.”

Refunds waiting Penrith MP Stuart Ayres has reminded motor vehicle owners across Penrith to claim their CTP Green Slip refund with over $500,000 yet to be claimed.

Mr Ayres said while 62,370 local residents have claimed over $4.3 million in refunds, there are still over 10,000 people in Penrith that have money owed to them.

“Claiming a refund is quick and easy. I encourage anyone who has yet to claim their refund to get online to claim or visit their nearest Service NSW centre,” he said.

The NSW Government overhauled the CTP Green Slip Scheme to create a more affordable, lower cost scheme.

Mr Ayres said the deadline for claiming a refund has now been extended until June 30.

Sticking their middle finger up at police and the system I n the last week, dozens of police officers were seriously attacked, bashed, kicked or bitten while on duty just doing their job.

If that sounds a shocking figure – here’s the reality check; it’s actually well below what’s considered average.

To put it another way; the week was a quiet one when it comes to police assaults.

Normally it’s about 50 and each of them totally unacceptable.

Unfortunately for Police and their families, it’s become something that “just goes with the job”, but it wasn’t always this bad.

Our 7News reporters often comment that the disrespect they see on the streets of our city is just getting worse.

So what kind of a person attacks a police officer?

Banks followed the story of 22- year- old Ashfandyar Tareen from Granville who – police say – lashed out at one of their officers when he knocked at the door.

The Senior Constable was investigating a spate of shootings across our southwest. There was an ugly struggle and the policeman was whacked in the face.

He now has a broken nose and will be off work for many weeks.

The accused Tareen was locked up and charged but, through his lawyer, managed to argue that he should be allowed out on bail because he too was hurt in the altercation.

As he was released from Silverwater Jail, Tareen stuck his finger up at the cameras and the system.

We’ll follow where this case ends up but sometimes actions speak louder than words.

The law says up to seven years jail for assaulting and injuring a cop. The typical outcome is nothing even close to that.

Whoever thought that we lived in a place where someone bashing a police officer could end up getting away with it.

Prosecution asks for more time in Cheryl Ardler murder case

The man accused of murdering Cranebrook’s Cheryl Ardler and dumping her remains in bushland has had his matter mentioned in court.

Dennis Andrew French did not appear on screen when his matter was briefly mentioned at Penrith Local Court last Friday.

The prosecution sought extended time to provide its evidence, explaining it could take nine to 12 months to obtain the pathologist and anthropologist reports which remain outstanding.

However, Magistrate Brian van Zuylen refused to remove the matter from the normal timetable without more information.

Police allege 39-year-old French murdered Ms Ardler, 41, on or about December 12, 2012 before dumping her body in bushland near Laycock Street, Cranebrook.

She was last seen near a bus stop on Greenhalg Road, Cranebrook in early December 2012.

Six years later, investigators discovered Ms Ardler’s bones which led to French being charged with murder on April 12 this year.

His matter was adjourned to July 19.

Bail was not applied for and was formally refused.

Man still behind bars after dramatic police chase

A drug driver who led police on two pursuits through western Sydney has been denied bail.

Cody Church reached speeds of 110km/ hr in a 50km/hr zone and tested positive to methamphetamine after leading police on a chase spanning three hours, Penrith Local Court heard last Friday.

The court was told Church, who has been in custody since his arrest on September 20, 2018, drove onto the footpath and crashed into at least two vehicles while being monitored by Pol Air.

Magistrate Brian van Zuylen refused to grant him bail while he awaits his sentence, finding he still posed an unacceptable risk of committing further serious offences.

“He has driven in an extremely dangerous manner across Greater Western Sydney over three hours,” he said.

“The police were astounded no persons were injured.”

Church formally entered pleas of guilty to a string of offences, including the pursuits, last Friday after the withdrawal of another charge.

His matter was adjourned to June 13 to allow for the preparation of a sentencing assessment report.

Man punched security guard and stole his cigarettes

An Emu Plains man who punched a security guard before taking off with his smokes has received multiple good behaviour bonds.

Dale Pygram fronted Penrith Local Court last Friday charged with ‘common assault’, ‘larceny’, ‘resist police’ and ‘fail to appear’.

The court heard Pygram was found yelling and screaming at a train station on September 5 last year when he was asked by a security guard to be quiet.

But rather than simply comply, the offender lashed out, punching the guard before stealing his packet of cigarettes which had fallen out of his pocket during the scuffle.

He was originally convicted of the offences in his absence when he failed to attend court.

Magistrate Brian van Zuylen took into account his mental health issues and suggested he endeavour to “live a quiet life” and concentrate on his employment and family.

He was handed two Community Correction Orders for 18-months with supervision for the assault and resist police matter, while he was fined $200 for the stealing offence.

Woman drove home after big night out with friends

A woman who drove home drunk after a big night out in the city has narrowly escaped jail time.

Taji Lauren Williams fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with high-range drink driving.

The court heard Williams had been in the city celebrating Valentine’s Day with a group of single friends before she caught a train back and drove home from the station.

While the offender knew she had alcohol in her system it came as a “significant surprise” when police told her she had blown 0.153, her lawyer said.

The court was told Williams had drunk from 9pm to 4am and was pulled over for speeding around 7am.

Magistrate Peter Thompson noted the offence was aggravated by her speed and the fact she was driving during the morning peak hour.

He described her offending as “objectively dangerous”.

“I have no doubt she was well aware she was affected by alcohol,” he said.

She was sentenced to nine months jail but will serve her sentence within the community by way of Intensive Correction Order.

She was also disqualified from driving for 10 months and ordered to enter the mandatory alcohol interlock program for 48 months.

She must also complete a sober driving program.

Man avoids prison time over drug supply and possession

Mitchell Justin Falke has been handed a community-based jail sentence after pleading guilty to multiple drug offences.

The 26-year-old appeared before Penrith Local Court last Thursday and was handed a 10-month jail sentence and 150 hours of community service work for supply and possession charges.

The court heard Falke was caught on

CCTV at Star City Casino supplying one ecstasy tablet to a fellow party goer. He was also found in possession of cocaine.

He was slapped with a two-year good behaviour bond for the cocaine possession and a 10-month Intensive Correction Order for the supply and deem supply charges.

Man cops warning from Magistrate over bond breach

A Werrington man who claimed to have been “harassed” by Community Corrections when he failed to engage in his supervision has received a stern warning from his presiding Magistrate.

The man complained “they’re going to make me lose my job”, when he faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday for breaching his bond.

But Magistrate Geoffrey Hiatt had little sympathy for him.

“You’re the one who committed the offences in the first place,” he said, “it’s not Community Corrections’ fault”.

Magistrate Hiatt directed he re-engage with the service and accept their supervision or risk a possible custodial sentence.

No action was taken on the breach.

Truck driver ordered off the roads after drink driving

A truck driver pinged low-range drink driving has lost his livelihood after being convicted of the offence.

The man fronted Penrith Local Court and was barred from driving for three months.

Despite submissions that the 45-yearold would lose $5,000 per month, Magistrate Peter Thompson refused to let him off, noting he had a previous mid-range drink driving matter in 2010.

Magistrate Thompson pointed out it was not a morning after offence and he had driven after consuming four alcoholic drinks.

“The fact you didn’t feel affected is not the test,” he said.

He was convicted and fined $600.

Jamisontown: Man hit by car passes away in hospital

The 21-year-old man who was hit by a car on the M4 near the Mulgoa Road off-ramp last month has tragically passed away.

Just after 10pm on Saturday, May 18 emergency services were called to the scene after reports a pedestrian had been hit by a white Nissan utility travelling westbound.

It is alleged the victim ran in front of the vehicle before he was treated by paramedics and airlifted to Westmead Hospital in a critical and unstable condition.

He remained at Westmead Hospital in a critical condition but tragically passed away during the early hours of Tuesday, June 11.

Police are renewing their calls for witnesses to come forward and urge anyone with dash cam footage of the incident to hand it into the police.

St Marys: Multiple charges after train station incident

A man has been charged after he was caught urinating on a platform at St Marys Railway Station on Saturday, June 8.

At 4.20pm police were called to the scene after reports of an intoxicated man urinating on the platform. The accused was approached by staff but he responded by yelling obscenities and threatening to hit them with a glass bottle that he was holding. He then smashed the bottle on the ground of the platform and proceeded to shove another commuter.

He attempted to escape by jumping onto the tracks into the rail corridor and jumping a fence on the other side. He was located by police a short time later on Harris Street, Penrith where he was conveyed to Penrith Police Station.

He struggled with and assaulted a police officer. The 24-year-old Botany man was charged with ‘offensive conduct’, ‘assault’, ‘affray’, ‘assault police’, ‘go onto running lines’ and ‘aggravated littering’.

Penrith: Drunk man should have just gone home

A 28-year-old Richmond man has been arrested after failing to leave a licenced premises when asked by police on Saturday, June 8.

At 11.15pm officers from Nepean Police Area Command were patrolling licenced premises throughout the region when they conducted a walk through of a Union Lane hotel.

Officers approached a man who was allegedly intoxicated and asked him to leave the premises.

A verbal exchange ensued before the accused walked towards the exit. Upon leaving, he struggled with an officer and dropped to the floor.

When he eventually exited he continued to behave in a violent manner and refused to leave the entryway of the premises.

He was arrested and charged with ‘fail to quit licenced premises’ and ‘resist police officers in the execution of duty’.

He was granted bail to appear at Penrith Local Court on Monday, June 24.

St Marys: Four charged after drug houses raided

Investigations are continuing following a successful drug bust after police raided three homes.

Between Monday, June 3 and Friday, June 7 police executed search warrants on Moira Crescent and Banksia Street in St Marys and Hope Street, Penrith.

As a result police discovered and seized a sophisticated hydroponic cultivation set up including over 100 electrical transformers, lighting, chemicals and power boards.

20kg of cannabis leaves and 14 cannabis plants were also found.

So far four persons of interest have been charged with ‘possess prohibited drug’ and ‘resist police in the execution of duty’.

They have been granted bail to appear at Penrith Local Court on June 24.

Should you contest a will?

We’ve noticed a bit of a spike in contested will cases recently, so we thought we’d take the opportunity to re-visit this topic for our readers.

“Contesting a will” is referred to at law as a “family provision claim”.

To contest a will, a person must fit into one of the categories of “eligible persons” set out in the Succession Act NSW 2006.

The most common categories of person who can contest a will are the spouse or de facto of the deceased, the natural child or children of the deceased and/or a person or people who lived with the deceased and was financially dependent on them.

The person or people who are responsible for responding to a contested will claim is the Executor.

In deciding whether or not a person’s claim will be successful, the court will consider a number of factors including but not limited to; • The financial resources (present and future) of the claimant; • The relationship the claimant had with the deceased person including any estrangements;

• The size of the deceased person’s estate; • The financial circumstances of the competing beneficiaries.

The cases have developed over the years to establish a few basic principles.

Every single case is different and will be assessed on its individual circumstances, but generally speaking a claimant must be able to demonstrate some financial need to be successful.

This can include a need for things like accommodation and a “rainy day” fund for life’s unexpected twists and turns.

Further, the law says that typically a deceased person will owe a greater obligation to provide to his or her spouse than adult children of a deceased’s former marriage.

If you have been left out of a will, or you don’t feel as though what you have been left is fair, you may have a claim.

If you are the executor of a deceased person’s will and a challenge has been made, you also need legal advice.

Investigations continue after crash Police investigations are continuing after a horror pedestrian crash at Colyton on Tuesday night.

About 9pm on Tuesday, emergency services were called to the intersection of Bennett Road and the Great Western Highway, following reports a man had been hit by a Honda Accord.

Striving for independence Let’s get behind Kayla: Penrith resident needs help purchasing new vehicle NICOLA BARTON

F

or Penrith resident Kayla Reichel, living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy is both isolating and independencestripping.

Born with the condition, she requires the use of a wheelchair due to being too weak to stand and having limited use of her arms.

Whilst she is a bubbly, intelligent 26-year-old university student, Ms Reichel longs for independence, as she is forced to rely heavily on others for everyday tasks.

“I can’t walk or do daily activities that everyone takes for granted like showering or getting dressed by myself, I’m not even able to cook my own food, I am very limited in what I’m able to do,” she said.

Spending most of her time at home, she feels extremely socially isolated.

Even travelling to Western Sydney University, where she studies a Bachelor of Psychology, is a difficult task, with weather restricting her attendance.

“I can get a bus but the stop has no shelter and rain can cause damage to my chair, then getting a taxi instead is ridiculously expensive. It costs me $10 to get there and $10 to get back so I tend to miss out when it’s raining,” Ms Reichel said.

To help adults living with disability combat isolation, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) fund vehicle modifications for National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participants that allow those who rely on wheelchairs to drive themselves.

The catch – all vehicles must be less than three-years-old and under 45,000kms.

This is due to the expensive equipment that must be installed, with older cars posing a ‘value for money’ risk.

A spokesperson from the NDIA said higher mileage cars can sometimes be considered if they are in good condition.

The spokesperson said they will not fund the purchase of a car as it is considered something “a person would normally be responsible for purchasing themselves”.

But living on a disability pension and with conditions that restrict the ability to work, simply buying a brand new car is out of reach for most.

That’s why Ms Reichel is now trying to raise some money, in the hope that she can finally live freely.

“This will open the world back up to me,” she said.

“It will just give me a lot more freedom to be the independent 26-year-old girl that I want to be.”

Special honour for volunteers NICOLA BARTON

T

wo members of Penrith Golf Club received their Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) on Monday, in recognition of their contribution to a local school.

Hosting the annual Charity Golf Day for the past 26 years, members Lorraine Cochrane and Pauline Tees have helped deliver over $352,000 to Werrington Public School’s support unit.

The money raised has gone on to deliver many wonderful projects for the children, including an entryway to the support unit building, additional classes, therapy room upgrades, shade sails, educational resources, sporting equipment and even a vegetable garden.

The money has also gone towards hiring special transport and personnel to enable students to participate in a variety of school excursions.

Penrith resident Lorraine Cochrane said she was honoured to be recognised for something she has loved doing for such a long period of time.

“The kids are very special, they are so beautiful and we just know that all the money raised is going to a good use,” she said.

“After we did it the first year, the degree of emotion in helping these kids just really made us want to stay with them all these years and they appreciated it so much.”

Glenmore Park resident and life member of the club, Pauline Tees said she was completely shocked when she heard the news of the OAM as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

“It’s an absolute honour, when you’re not expecting something and you do it because you love doing it and you do it for the children, it’s just unbelievable,” she said.

Both women can’t really remember what sparked the idea for the initiative back in 1993 but have stuck by it after witnessing how much of a difference it made to the school.

“It wasn’t just us, we were there from the beginning but the other girls helped too, there’s a lot of computer work, phone work and walking the streets to get businesses on board, the support from everyone and the golf club has just been absolutely amazing,” Ms Tees said.

The annual Charity Golf Day runs every October and averages about 150 participants each year.

Veronica’s story of hope Local business owner is using her journey to inspire and help others in need NICOLA BARTON

W

hen refugee Veronica Nou first came to Australia, she didn’t know what it was like to not be

hungry.

After fleeing Cambodia and the Khumar Rouge, Ms Nou’s family spent years in a detention camp in Thailand before travelling to Australia.

Now, as the co-owner of Morris Care & Advice Pharmacy in Oxley Park and the sole proprietor of the Colyton Centre Pharmacy, she makes it her mission to help those who haven’t had the same opportunities as herself.

“I think about the things that I went through and I think how could I possibly sit here and enjoy this life and think that these people facing struggles are not my problem,” she said.

Reflecting on a time when she had to wear the same pair of school shoes from Year 7 to 10 and share a bag of frozen peas as a meal, Ms Nou said it wasn’t until she received a scholarship to a private school that she saw how the other half lived.

“I’ve always had this realisation that there’s such a gap of people doing really well who just have no idea of what it’s like on the other side,” she said.

Veronica Nou is sharing her inspirational story as part of Refugee Week

“The people who are really struggling don’t even know that it isn’t normal or what opportunities are out there.

“It’s crazy for me to look back, I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve had, so I try to give back to those that haven’t.”

As a founding member and National Convener of the Mums4Refugees group, Ms Nou helps host a range of fundraisers aimed at giving refugees and other marginal groups the best shot at life.

“We thought we are tired of talking about cupcakes and handbags, there’s all of this stuff going on about kids in detention, we’re uncomfortable about it as mums, so why don’t we try and do something about it,” she said.

In light of Refugee Week, commencing on Sunday, June 16, her Oxley Park pharmacy, in partnership with Oxley Park Public School, will be running a food drive.

Ms Nou said her pharmacy and advocacy work are no longer separate things.

raddock Public School went back in time at their recent biennial History Fair.

Students had the opportunity to speak to historians and see artefacts to learn about their school and how the area has changed over time.

Teacher Librarian Trudy Scanlin said the event is an effective way of teaching history curriculum.

“The day creates great partnerships with local community organisations who really enjoy sharing their knowledge with the next generation. It hopefully inspires some of our students to seek out more information about their local area and its history,” she said.

“It helps students understand roles of local historians in gathering and

preserving information and artefacts and what we can learn from them. It gives the students different perspectives and an appreciation of change.”

Some of the exhibitors that were highlights for students included the Penrith City Library history team and Nepean Archaeology group, who brought books and artefacts that were dug up along with the Model A Ford Club, who brought a vintage motorbike.

“The hands- on, real learning experiences are unbeatable. The students visit just three of our exhibitors, so sharing what they experienced and learnt is very exciting for them,” Ms Scanlin said.

“They loved all the presenters but of course the vehicles are always going to be popular and memorable. They are simply fascinated that a vehicle could be drivable after 90 years.”

Lions roar into year ahead with new leadership team

parent never wants to see their child sick or in pain, no matter what age they are.

Rick Morgan’s daughter Tracey Ryan was diagnosed with breast cancer this year resulting in her having a double mastectomy and intense chemotherapy.

Mr Morgan couldn’t bear to see his daughter have to shave her head as a result of the aggressive chemotherapy so wanted to support her and raise funds.

“She was advised by her oncologist to take control of the situation and remove her hair as her scalp would become painful with the follicles dying, but I just found it hard to accept that she had to go through this and doesn’t have a choice,” Mr Morgan said.

“I couldn’t watch my daughter go through it alone, so I made a decision to shave my head to raise money for the McGrath Breast Care Nurses.”

Mr Morgan told the Weekender that the thought of cutting his hair off frightens him, but he has the choice and is doing it for a good cause.

“I will be doing it at my ‘Rick’s Cut & Shave’ event at Penrith Golf Club on Saturday, July 13 from 3pm-6pm,” Mr Morgan said.

“People can come down in pink attire for a fun evening of raffles and auctions all in support of a great event.”

hen South Penrith resident Sally Whyte spontaneously booked a trip to Nepal, she never predicted how much her life would change.

The 22- year- old knew she wanted to do some volunteer work so took a leap of faith, booked a flight and headed over to Khelanki where she would soon embark on a seven week adventure.

Never having visited a third world country before, Ms Whyte was petrified when she first arrived, confronted by her surroundings and overcome with fear and uncertainty.

But after working with a group of boys at a local Monastery, she has made it her mission to continue to give back to a country that quickly became like a home to her. â&#x20AC;&#x153;After the first few days when I really took in what I was seeing, I started to really connect with the people and shut out my world that I knew,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Once I did that I started to really immerse myself into the stories of the people and their culture, it really changes your perception.â&#x20AC;?

Run solely off donations and volunteers, the Monastery is home to both orphans

and children who were given up by their parents due to poor living circumstances.

Ms Whyte taught English classes to boys ranging from four to 15-years-old and said it was an eye-opening experience. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Monastery was not what I expected, the temples are nice but the actual living areas are really bad, it was a big shock.

They didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even have beds, just tiny thin mats on the floor,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I just thought, this is not OK.â&#x20AC;?

Shocked by the living conditions, she started a GoFundMe campaign whilst she was still over there, initially to raise funds for stationary and educational supplies.

But after raising a lot more than she anticipated, she was able to completely refurbish every single one of the boysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; bedrooms.

Now, having just recently returned home, Ms Whyte said she has a newfound appreciation for her country.

She wants to ensure she is not just another temporary volunteer by continuing to stay in contact with some of the students.

Ms Whyte thanked everyone for their support in allowing her to deliver the stationary and refurbished rooms.

She said she couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t recommend the experience more for those looking to make a meaningful contribution in the world.

ust two days after bringing her youngest son home, Teresa Hanna realised there was something very wrong with her baby.

The St Clair mum of five rushed Emmanuel to the emergency department where he was diagnosed with a rare metabolic condition called Ornithine Transcabomylase Deficiency (OTC).

OTC, which affects one in 50,000 to 80,000 children, means that Emmanuel couldn’t break down the protein in his body, causing his ammonia levels to rise, which slowly starved his brain of oxygen.

“This condition leads to seizures which can lead to neonatal death so the only thing that could save his life was a liver transplant,” Ms Hannah said.

With Emmanuel receiving a liver transplant earlier this year, Ms Hanna wants to raise money for the Liver Transplant Unit at their ‘Leaping Livers Lapping The Lagoon’ walk in July. She also wants to spread awareness of testing to avoid other families facing similar issues.

“We couldn’t stop him having this disease but if we did an ammonia test and knew his levels were rising, we could have prevented the seizures,” she said.

“It’s not a standard thing to test for but babies could get it before going home and could stop brain damage if something is wrong.”

Cranebrook’s George Luxford is keen to connect with his fellow community members

ong gone are the days where neighbours would always pop over the fence to have a chat. These days the first thing people do to find out information about their area is turn to social media.

63- year- old George Luxford, who has lived in Cranebrook for 35 years, is a member of many community groups on Facebook and said there are positives and negatives to online interaction.

“The way the suburbs are growing it’s hard to connect with people in such a large area and a lot of people just don’t want to connect with their neighbours face to face, they have their own lives and are happy to do that,” Mr Luxford said.

“People are working so much these days, not just 9-5 but night shifts and weekends, so if they are time poor, online is a good way to connect.”

Mr Luxford said groups must be monitored however, as people are quick to be harsher when online.

“I was in a group and made a comment and got death threats because people feel anonymous,” Mr Luxford said.

“People find excuses to criticise because they can hide behind fake names.”

Mr Luxford is also a suburb lead for Cranebrook on the social networking app ‘Nextdoor’.

He said the app aims to connect neighbours online then promote interactions.

The concept is growing but needs more support.

“Nextdoor is about connecting people who live together, and the idea is when you register you can see how many neighbours are interested in getting involved in things and introducing yourself,” Mr Luxford said.

“It’s only new and unfortunately, we haven’t got many members yet, so we’re still trying to get people involved and interacting to form connections and then actually meet up.”

While the app is new, Mr Luxford said online groups can be beneficial when used correctly.

“I do suffer from loneliness as I live by myself, so I do want to reach out to people, so it’s things like this that give me a bit of hope that there are others who are feeling the same,” Mr Luxford said.

“A few people have said hello to me at the shops and that they’ve seen me on Nextdoor, so they know I am there or people have helped someone out and have become friends, so making these real life connections is what it is all about.”

Fittler must make big calls ahead of Origin II

t’s funny how the rugby league Gods seem to throw up the perfect storylines at the perfect time.

When the draw was released at the end of last year a Round 14 game between the Panthers and Rabbitohs would have looked like your run of the mill club game.

Fast forward six months and this Saturday night’s showdown shapes as the most crucial 80 minutes in the representative careers of Cody Walker, Nathan Cleary and James Maloney.

There were few players under more pressure heading into the State of Origin series opener than Nathan Cleary and that pressure has only intensified since the Maroons escaped with an 18-10 victory at Suncorp Stadium.

It took all of 60 seconds for the post game one talk to turn to the Blues halves and who would be left standing for game two in Perth.

There’s been calls for Mitchell Pearce, who has won five man of the match awards in succession, to be shoehorned into the Blues halves, but there are those who believe that Pearce’s time in sky blue has come and gone.

There’s been calls for Maloney to be recalled into the New South Wales side following his series winning form for the Blues in 2018.

And there’s been calls for Walker, who was taken from the field with half an hour remaining on the clock in game one, to be given a second chance.

And then you throw Jack Wighton into the mix and it becomes a very interesting round of football.

By the time Walker, Maloney and Cleary take to ANZ Stadium on Saturday night, Wighton and Pearce would have had their last chance to impress selectors.

With a short turnaround between the side being named and the game being played, Brad Fittler’s side will have just three training sessions and a captain’s run before they run out and try and save this year’s series at Optus Stadium so combinations will be key.

On paper it would appear Maloney and Cleary have the inside running given their club combination, but let’s not forget that Maloney and Pearce won a premiership together at the Roosters in 2013 and then you’ve got Walker and Pearce who have

If Maloney and Cleary can come up with an inspired 80 minute performance like they did against the Roosters last weekend

or if Walker can find the magic that eluded him in the State of Origin opener, you can guarantee that it will be a sleepless night for Fittler and his selectors on Saturday night.

All of a sudden, Penrith fans are on top of the world after Ivan Cleary’s side recorded its third straight win last weekend, a 19-10 toppling of defending champions the Roosters.

Forget that Trent Robinson’s outfit was without a host of big names – last Sunday’s game wasn’t about the understrength Roosters, it was about the tenacity and enthusiasm Penrith played with, something that was lacking in the first few months of the season.

Cleary now has his side humming along and sitting just two points outside the top eight. The Finals door is far from being open, but it’s safe to say it has been unlocked and the Panthers have a chance

of re-writing history if they keep up their winning ways.

The Panthers are benefiting from the tightness of the competition outside of the top four, and it’s quite possible that 28 points, or even 26, will get you into the top eight this year, which keeps the Finals flame alive for Penrith.

After getting through the daunting task of facing the Roosters last weekend, the tough encounters keep coming with Penrith facing Wayne Bennett’s Rabbitohs this Saturday evening at ANZ Stadium.

Souths started the season well but have the wobbles at the moment, beaten by the Eels and Knights in their last two matches as the Origin period starts to bite. Things have also been made more difficult for the Rabbitohs with Sam Burgess undergoing shoulder surgery this week and facing a stint on the sidelines, and Adam Reynolds remaining out with a back problem.

ABC 702 2GB 873 Souths, who sit second on the ladder, were out- enthused by the Knights last Friday night and never looked in the contest, but you can never under-estimate a Wayne Bennett coached team.

The halves battle in this one will be intriguing, with Bennett naming Cody Walker and Adam Doueihi to guide his team around the park against Nathan Cleary and James Maloney, who may well be packing their bags for Perth on Sunday with a solid performance here potentially locking down their reunion in Blues colours for Origin II. That said, Walker has a point to prove after a disappointing effort in Origin I, and is fighting for his representative future against the Panthers, which could bring out the best in him.

Penrith continue to have vulnerabilities on the edges (which certainly brings the likes of Dane Gagai and James Roberts

into play) but I’d expect the Rabbitohs to try to do the business up the middle in this one. Souths have more line engagements than any other team in the competition and also lead the NRL in line breaks, so you can expect them to try to tire Penrith’s forward pack and expose their opposition’s ill- discipline, which sees Penrith still leading the competition in penalties conceded.

All of the stats point to a Souths win this weekend, but those stats are irrelevant when you consider the form of both these teams in the last fortnight, which is surely the most important factor leading into Saturday evening.

Penrith have some much - needed momentum at the moment and I think they can get over a depleted Souths side that looks desperate for rep round and an upcoming bye.

Tip: Panthers by 6.

JIMMY’S BLUE  SOS James Maloney. After being forced to watch Origin I from his couch last week, it’s highly likely that Maloney will be named in Brad Fittler’s Blues team for Origin II in Perth. Maloney, who turns 33 on Saturday, has made no secret about his desire to play for the Blues again after partnering with Nathan Cleary to guide Fittler’s team to a series win last year.

With a short preparation for the Perth game and Cody Walker failing to fire in Origin I, it’s highly likely Fittler will go with the club combination of Cleary and Maloney to help save the series.

Zelezniak last Friday came as no surprise, but what was a shock was the announcement that he’d be joining the Bulldogs on an 18 month contract. The 23-year-old winger had been linked with the Eels, Tigers and Cowboys but the Bulldogs barely rated a mention. I’m told North Queensland did show heavy interest and in fact Watene-Zelezniak may have got himself a better deal in Townsville, but a desire to stay in Sydney won out in the end. While the terms of his departure from Penrith are being kept confidential, I’ve been told the Panthers paid very little towards Watene-Zelezniak’s Bulldogs deal.

TAYLOR As a member of Penrith’s dedicated groundskeeping team, Mitch Kenny was mowing lawns, trimming hedges and pulling weeds for the club a little over one month ago. Today, he’s gearing up to play the South Sydney Rabbitohs in his fourth straight game of first grade.

The 21-year-old Windsor junior has literally gone from a part-time footballer and groundskeeper to an 80- minute hooker overnight.

Perhaps he’s Penrith’s lucky charm too, with the club stringing together three consecutive wins with Kenny in the side.

“It’s been a whirlwind… four weeks ago I was mowing lawns and working on the gardens, I didn’t know I’d be here right now,” Kenny told Extra Time.

“I’m really grateful for the experiences

I’ve had this year, this is a dream come true playing first grade at Penrith. It’s been a crazy few months and weeks but I’m happy to be riding the wave.”

Things got even crazier for Kenny last week after he became the beneficiary of prop Tim Grant’s selfless act to terminate his playing contract following a seasonending pectoral injury.

Grant’s decision to remove himself from Penrith’s books and vacate a spot in the top 30 squad allowed Kenny to be promoted into the side – meaning the club no longer needs to apply for an exemption to play him for the remainder of the season.

Kenny said Grant’s decision to allow a young local junior like himself to take his spot meant the world to him.

“I’m super grateful to Timmy Grant, I spoke to him and he knows that,” he said.

“He’s such a selfless guy and we love him around the club. I’m just so grateful for what he did.

“I’m not counting my chickens before they hatch, I’ve got to let my performances do the talking but just to know I’m going to be considered each week for first grade is a dream come true.”

Since Peter Wallace’s retirement mid last year, Penrith have struggled in the dummy half department.

While Sione Katoa and Wayde Egan have had their moments over the past 12 months, Kenny has given the Panthers an extra spring in their step and that’s been evident since his debut against the Eels back in Round 11.

While time will tell if Penrith have found their long- term hooker in Kenny, he’s already more than enjoying his opportunity in the NRL. “I’m still pinching myself… on the weekend I got to play against Cronk, Tedesco and the Australian captain in Boyd Cordner, that’s ridiculous,” Kenny said.

“Playing against Souths this weekend is going to be the same, there’s some quality blokes there and guys I’ve looked up to.

“I’m just looking forward to another game in first grade, and four wins in a row wouldn’t hurt too.”

NRL needs to address scheduling issues

t’s time for the NRL to get creative.

The product of rugby league has never been better. 2019 is shaping as another tight competition. Teams that were predicted to run away at the top of the ladder like Souths and the Sydney Roosters are now struggling through the Origin period. Teams that had been written off by some including the Panthers are creeping up the ladder. However for many games crowds are still staying away.

When the NRL gets scheduling right fans do come out. Sunday afternoons are proving popular, last weekend more than 30,000 turned out to Suncorp Stadium to watch the Broncos beaten by the Titans, a great effort given Origin was played at the same ground a few days before. More than 16,000 packed Panthers Stadium to watch Penrith beat the Premiers on a beautiful winter’s afternoon. It proves when the timeslot and conditions are right fans will come.

However last Friday night was another embarrassment for the NRL. Just over 8,000 turned up to watch Newcastle beat Souths at ANZ Stadium. A pitiful crowd given the Rabbitohs sat at the top of the

ladder! Again another embarrassment for the former Olympic Stadium, 77,000 empty seats.

The issue here is scheduling. The second Friday night game was played just down the road at the new Bankwest Stadium.

Why on Earth would the NRL schedule two matches on the one night just 15 minutes away from each other?

The NRL must get creative to attract crowds to unpopular timeslots like 6pm on Friday or if it plans to persist playing games at unsuitable grounds like ANZ. Last Friday night should’ve been a double header at the new Bankwest Stadium.

Play both games there from 6pm, make it an event and the NRL probably attracts a bigger crowd than the combined 20,000.

Imagine the excitement for Newcastle or Souths fans who haven’t been to Sydney’s best rectangular ground yet, much more appealing than the cold soulless Homebush.

What if the NRL introducing a variable ticket pricing system? For matches played in unpopular timeslots, 6pm Friday or Thursday night, only charge half price and offer up $1 hot dogs.

The local junior debuted with Penrith in 2007 and was set to be a Panther for life, until a dramatic switch to South Sydney in 2015.

Rumours about Grant’s move to Souths started very early in the 2014 season.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported in late March: “Penrith have scotched rumours that former State of Origin prop Tim Grant could leave the NRL

club. Speculation became widespread that Grant could depart and possibly link with South Sydney after he was dropped from the Panthers’ side that lost to Parramatta on Saturday, having initially been named in coach Ivan Cleary’s 17-man squad.”

But less than four weeks after that article, and Penrith’s denial, the situation had changed dramatically.

On April 18, 2014, South Sydney issued a statement: “The South Sydney Rabbitohs have signed representative front row forward Tim Grant for the next four seasons today.”

Grant, who never really wanted to leave Penrith but was forced out due

to salary cap pressures and form, said at the time he was happy to join the Rabbitohs.

“South Sydney is a great Club and I’m looking forward to joining them next season,” Grant said.

“However in saying that, I still have a job to do here at Penrith.”

In the end, Grant would play only 21 games for the Rabbitohs. He was released from the final three years of his contract and joined the Wests Tigers, where he played 46 games between 2016 and 2018.

It seems fitting that Grant returned to Penrith in 2019, finishing his career where it all started.

In a generation of revivals, Barbara said she would love for a remake to happen but couldn’t say who she would want to play her famous role.

“They were going to do a feature film on Jeannie about eight years ago and I went in to consult with MGM but they never seemed to get if off the ground but I don’t know why,” Barbara said.

“If I did have someone in mind, I couldn’t tell you because that would be so bad with the other actresses.”

The last time Barbara came to Supanova she was joined by her co- stars Larry Hagman and Bill Daily. Both have now passed away.

“It is very sad to be the only one here representing but I am happy to be coming back,” Barbara said.

The 87- year- old actress has truly had an amazing career but shows no signs of slowing down. She’s currently filming a Christmas movie.

At the movies...

Not quite a winning combination DETECTIVE PIKACHU ++ 1 hour, 44 mins EMILY FESZCZUK

This movie is appealing to two types of people: kids with a crazy imagination or die- hard fans of the ‘90s animate series ‘Pokémon’, who will appreciate all the references.

For someone like myself, where my only experience with the cartoon was watching it occasionally when it was on breakfast TV, I couldn’t quite get into the storyline.

‘Detective Pikachu’ follows a futuristic world where humans and Pokémon co- exist together. Tim Goodman (Justice Smith) is looking for his missing policeman father, Harry, when he gets help from the adorable yet hilarious Detective

Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds) to unravel the mystery.

While I wasn’t totally immersed in the tale, the cute Pikachu with Ryan Reynolds’ signature ‘Deadpool’ style dry humour had me. He really stole the show and had you laughing the whole time with his wise cracks.

The movie did have its moments, being beautifully shot and using some amazing technology to blend the animated characters with live action. It tried to have more of a layered deep message, but I don’t think that was necessary for the type of movie it ultimately is.

Pokémon is about catching them all but sadly this one didn’t seem to catch me.

Ê The first State of Origin game is officially the most watched show of 2019 so far, with 2.18 million metro viewers cheering on the Blues and Maroons last Wednesday night. Another 1.03 million were watching in regional areas taking the total figure to a massive 3.21 million viewers. Ê 10 has confirmed it has officially dumped Grant Denyer’s ‘Game of Games’ and Julia Morris’ ‘Blind Date’. Good call! Ê Channel Seven has also swung the axe themselves, cutting any future episodes of Joel Creasey’s ‘Take Me Out’ and singing show ‘All Together Now’. Ê Still on Seven and they have greenlit a short-run series ‘The Real Dirty Danc-

Ê SKY News Political Editor David Speers has been confirmed to host ‘Insiders’ replacing Barrie Cassidy. Speers will begin his new role in 2020, with Annabel Crabb and Fran Kelly sharing the presenting duties on ‘Insiders’ for the remainder of the year. Ê Zachary Levi will host the ‘MTV Movie and TV Awards’, which will be broadcast live on Tuesday, June 18 at 11am on MTV.

Ê Netflix dark comedy ‘Dead to Me’, starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, has been renewed for a second season. Ê If you haven’t seen it yet, make sure you watch new HBO miniseries ‘Chernobyl’ – it is absolutely incredible. I finished up the five-part series last week as Foxtel Now subscribers were able to stream it early, but the first episode just premiered on FOX Showcase on Wednesday for everyone else. ‘Chernobyl’, which dramatises the catastrophic nuclear meltdown in 1986, is attracting mega-buzz with a 96 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 9.7/10 on IMDB. Ê ‘The Good Place’, which airs in Australia on Netflix and ABC Comedy, will end with its fourth season next year.

Verruca Pedis / Plantar Warts can cause plenty of concern...

These painful little terrors can pop up without much warning and can spread just as quickly.

Verruca Pedis or more commonly known as Plantar Warts are often mistaken for corns and vice versa.

Generally, Verruca Pedis appear on the sole of your foot and burrow themselves into the tissue, appearing as a hard, somewhat, cauliflower like lump of tissue with small black spots within the lesion (dry blood).

They can often be confused with corns or callus due to callus forming over the top of the wart.

Plantar warts present in several ways, the most common ways being singular or as multiple warts over a small area (mosaic wart).

Generally, the mosaic wart consists of a large central lesion surrounded by several small warts.

Warts can look similar to callus/corns, but if squeezed either side of the lesion, plantar warts will present more painful compared to corns, which are more painful when pressed directly upon.

Verruca Pedis are the result of a form of the human papilloma virus that is often

transferred in communal public areas where people are regularly barefoot.

Places such as public pools/showers or hotel room showers are among the most common places to pick up this infection.

They often arise when our immune system is compromised via illness, pregnancy and for children – when they are building their immune system.

If our immune system isn’t in its peak condition it can make treating warts very difficult!

Treatment The lesions are particularly difficult to resolve because the virus is virulent and the lesions tap into your blood and nerve supply to stay alive.

Over the counter applications are successful in some cases.

However, the majority of cases require more aggressive treatment such as freezing with liquid nitrogen or applying more acidic treatment.

However, there are a few more recent treatment options that involve engaging your own immune system response to make your body fight the virus off.

Most of these treatments are offered by your local podiatrist or GP. My tip is to see someone as soon as you notice a Plantar Wart.

They will only get bigger or spread if left untreated.

In Jesus’ story, the pearl Jesus was talking about was the Kingdom of Heaven. In Jesus’ opinion, having or being part of the Kingdom of Heaven is worth giving up everything for!

Jesus is so radical in his thinking, reversing our understanding of everything we think is valuable. We put a high value on security, education, friendship, a good job, our families, on

having a nice house in a nice suburb and maybe even a holiday house.

Jesus reverses this thinking, turning it upside down. Jesus says the most valuable thing is being part of the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus says it is so important to be part of the Kingdom of Heaven that we should be prepared to give up everything to make sure we have it!

The way to be part of the Kingdom of Heaven is through Jesus himself; trusting him, committing your life to him.

When establishing a financial plan it is easy to focus only on building and managing assets and we often pay little attention to our debt. If we are able to successfully reduce our debt, we are increasing our overall net wealth.

Firstly I would like to state upfront, it is not a bad thing to borrow money, as long as that money is put to good use.

The purchase of an asset that will either grow in value or produce income with borrowed funds is potentially a good idea. This doesn’t reduce the importance on managing our debt effectively.

There are number strategies that can be implemented to assist in reducing debt levels.

A very common and effective debt reduction strategy is debt consolidation. The most popular method of debt consolidation is combining debts with high interest rates such as credit cards and unsecured personal loans with debts with lower interest rates, often secured by a property. Securing the debt significantly reduces the interest rate, credit cards usually have interest rates anywhere from 15 to 22 per cent, and a loan secured by a property is obviously going to be significantly lower.

A similar strategy is prioritising repayments to reduce those with the highest interest rates first. This may involve switching some interest payments with lower interest rates to interest only for a point in time and re-directing the repayments to expensive debts.

Tax- deductibility impacts on the true cost of the debt. If the interest is deductible the net of tax cost is the relevant number in prioritising payments. It is a common error to either ignore the deductibility or conversely assume that because it is deductible that it is a good debt and should be retained.

The tax deduction in itself is not a good enough reason in its own right to retain a debt, after assessing your overall situation repaying a tax deductible debt could easily be the best option.

There are a number of finance products that can reduce the interest payable if used correctly.

Things such as offset accounts and redraw facilities allow your savings and ongoing cash to reduce the interest payable.

These won’t be appropriate for everyone, often these facilities have higher ongoing interest rates or fees (but not always) and you may need to determine if your savings reducing interest payable will outweigh any increased costs.

Last week I compared the different iPad models.

As I was travelling overseas; I wanted to see if the iPad can replace my laptop.

I purchased an iPad Pro 11” 256GB, Wi-Fi and cellular, keyboard and an Apple Pencil.

The first real benefit of my iPad is how light and compact it is.

The keyboard is responsive and battery life at 10 hours is a lot more than I get on my laptop.

My main tools are Microsoft Office 365.

There are iOS versions of all Microsoft programs for the iPad. Word and Excel, are very similar to the PC versions. I use Grammarly for spell check and grammar correction, this also has an iPad app and works fine. Even if you do not use MSOffice – Apple does include a free version of iWork which includes Pages, iMovie, iPhoto, GarageBand, Numbers, Keynote and iCloud.

I also use Xero for accounting. Xero fired up in a browser just fine. I was able to raise bills and invoice and organise payroll while overseas.

Banking worked fine, as did all of the web-based packages I used.

I also do a bit of photo editing, for basic editing Adobe Photoshop Express works a treat. For video editing Apple’s iMovie is great for basic editing. Printing may be a problem if you have an older printer as the printer needs to support Apple’s Air Print. Not all hotels supported AirPrint.

I did miss the full- size keyboard and found the Apple Keyboard a bit cramped when typing.

I found drag and drop, as well as cut/ paste a bit fiddly but workable. Apple does not support using a mouse and I find using a mouse is much easier than using a touch screen.

For travelling the iPad works well as a laptop replacement. I will never again take my laptop; my iPad Pro can do everything I need it to do business wise.

The added benefit is I can download and watch offline movies from Netflix, Stan and Amazon, as well as catch up on emails and social media.

At this stage the iPad is not a replacement for my main PC. Multiple screens and the range of accessories and programs available on the PC/Mac give them the edge. I also think that multitasking on the PC is better, as is advanced editing in MS Office, as well as video and graphics editing.

The baiting program will begin on, or shortly after the 17th of June 2019 and will run until the 29th of July 2019. It is a requirement of the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974 that domestic animals/ pets are not permitted on national park, nature reserves and state conservation areas. It is essential that local residents restrain domestic pets and ensure they are not permitted to roam as 1080 is lethal to domestic pets if consumed. Signs advising of the baiting program will be displayed at entrances to the reserves where baits are located. 1080 baits will be used in accordance with the 1080 Pesticide Control Order, Pesticide Act and Regulation.

Netball rivalry grows NATHAN TAYLOR

N

o matter what the code, there’s nothing better than a great sporting rivalry for supporters to latch on to. And while the enmity between the NSW Swifts and Giants Netball is only a few seasons old, it’s fast becoming one of the biggest this city has to offer.

This Sunday afternoon a packed house is expected at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney Olympic Park for this season’s second match- up between the two powerhouse Super Netball clubs.

“We got the upper hand on them in the first round of the season but they’ve been playing some good netball the last few weeks.

“It’s going to be a very tough match and a very physical match at that.”

This Sunday’s Round 8 contest between the Swifts and Giants forms part of Super Netball’s Indigenous Round, which will see every team in the league sport specially designed dresses for the occasion.

While many fans in western Sydney have hopped aboard the Giants train due to their success in recent years, Hadley knows her Swifts still have plenty of support in the Penrith community.

After a lean few years on the court the Swifts are once again the team to watch in 2019, leading the Super Netball competition by a whopping 12 points.

Swifts vice- captain and St Clair junior Paige Hadley described the rivalry between her side and the Giants as “huge”.

“The first few seasons the Giants were the dominant team in Sydney but this year we want to win that back,” she told the Weekender.

“I think everyone at the Penrith District Netball Association follows the Swifts, they are very proud and support me no matter what,” she said.

“Some people have jumped on the bandwagon to support the Giants but I think this year they’ve gone back to the Swifts.”

Later this month the Super Netball competition will take a short hiatus as players head to England for the 2019 Netball World Cup. 26- year- old Hadley is part of the squad.

“It’s been a whirlwind six months being out of the squad then being elevated and ultimately chosen – it’s a pretty cool comeback story,” she said.

Havas grabs title crown St Clair driver was in right place at the right time to secure triumphant victory NATHAN TAYLOR

S

ince stepping into Microsprints four- and- a- half seasons ago, Ernie Havas’ list of accolades has continued to increase with the St Clair resident now adding a Queensland title to his resume.

Achieving a great deal in such a short amount of time, Havas has collected a host of impressive results during his Microsprint career, including scoring back to back NSW Club Championships this season and previously winning the State Cup and the Isaacs Memorial.

But perhaps no result was as impressive as last season’s Australian title victory at Narrabri’s Northwest Speedway.

While this season’s Australian title at Toowoomba didn’t quite go as planned, the determined racer kept his confidence intact heading into June 1’s Queensland title at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway.

contention by lap seven. From there, he held strong in third place, before being elevated to second when the race leader pulled to the infield, later moving into the lead with just two laps remaining when the car ahead of him also retired.

While it wasn’t the most climactic victory for Havas, his composed race allowed him to be in the right place at the right time to inherit the lead, with his strong set-up and consistent pace being enough to earn him the crown.

Havas said it’s all part of the ups and downs of racing.

“While you never want to see fellow racers drop out, it’s part and parcel of speedway and you have to put yourself in a position to be in reach of the lead, so I’m thrilled to come away with the Queensland title win,” Havas said.

“Last Saturday night was definitely a great way to bounce back after being unable to defend the Australian title.

We’re still just as competitive as ever and we’re already looking forward to getting back out on track next season.”

In the upcoming 2019/20 season, Havas plans to contest a similar schedule, participating in each of the title events.

Story continued from » p. 64 Gillett said the relatively new side took a few games to gel, but once they did, it was all smooth sailing for Penrith.

“Our girls lost two games on day one but after that they went undefeated,” she said.

“There were a couple of players from the 2018 group that finished runners-up in the side, but the rest of the team was made up of players from last year’s U15s team.

“It took a few of the new players some time to settle in but once they did that they were unstoppable.”

Penrith almost took home two titles over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, with their U15s team falling awfully close of a ladder-leading finish.

Penrith finished second with 17 wins, while Liverpool City came out on top with 18 victories.

“We thought for a while there we almost had another title but we were just beaten by a small margin,” Gillett said.

“We were a bit unlucky but to finish runners- up was fabulous as well.”

Along with winning the Opens Division 1 title over Manly Warringah, Newcastle also took home the Pat Weston OAM Country Championship Trophy.

Top local gymnasts enjoy successful trip to Melbourne NATHAN TAYLOR

everal local gymnasts have returned home from Melbourne with medals around their necks following outstanding performances at the Australian National Championships recently.

600 athletes from NSW headed to Melbourne for the prestigious event last month, participating in six gym sports including tumbling and trampoline.

Kachan School of Tumbling and Performance (KSTP) were well represented in the Victorian capital, with many of their young star athletes taking home medals.

Glenmore Park resident Ethan McGuinness out tumbled training partners Blake Grainger and Cranebrook’s Jack Hemmings to take out the Senior International Tumbling title.

The three gymnasts, who train regularly at the Windsor- based school, each secured themselves a place on the National Tumbling Squad.

Also bringing home gold for KSTP was St Clair youngster Hayley Sepping, who finished first in Trampoline and first

in Synchronised Trampoline. The tiny superstar also won silver in Double Mini Trampoline, to round out what was a memorable competition for her.

Erskine Park resident Tamia Fonua was crowned champion in Youth U15 Tumbling – proving once again KSTP is a place full of winners.

Overall KSTP, which is a family-owned and operated club run by Londonderry couple Rebecca and Dzmitry Kachan, won nine individual gold medals, four silver medals and three bronze medals in Melbourne.

Gymnastics NSW collectively claimed 117 gold, 79 silver and 86 bronze medals – more than any other state.

Gymnastics NSW CEO Aaron Bloomfield said he was proud of the team’s achievements and credits the many talented athletes and coaching from across the state.

“Team NSW has once again returned home with more national medals than any other state,” he said.

“With both Australian champions and new National Squad members, it’s clear 12 months of hard work has paid off.”

Around the grounds BASKETBALL: Following last weekend’s Queen’s Birthday holiday, Penrith will return to the court this Sunday to battle the Newcastle Hunters in Round 13 of the Waratah Championship League (WCL) Men’s competition. Meanwhile, Penrith’s resurgent WCL Women’s team will also meet the Hunters following last week’s break. Both matches will be played at Newcastle Basketball Stadium.

AFL: The Penrith Rams return to the field this Saturday to take on the South West Sydney Magpies in Round 9 of the AFL Sydney Platinum Division competition. The match will be played at Greygums Oval in Cranebrook from 2pm. Meanwhile, the Penrith Ramettes are still searching for their first win and will come up against the Camden Cats in Round 9 of the AFL Sydney Women’s Division 1 competition. The match will also be played at Greygums Oval from 8.30am.

AFL: The GWS Giants have crashed back down to earth following a surprising 21-point loss to the Adelaide Crows in Round 12 of the AFL. A strong finish from the Crows in the final quarter saw the Giants slip from second to third on the AFL ladder. GWS will look to bounce back when they face North Melbourne this Sunday afternoon at Blundstone Arena in Tasmania.

NETBALL: The Panthers Opens team have won their first game of the season, defeating the UTS Sparks 40-39 in Round 2 of the Netball NSW Premier

League competition. Meanwhile, the Panthers Under 23s team are yet to record a win, smashed by the Sparks 67-34. Both teams will take on the Manly Warringah Sapphires in Round 3.

NETBALL: Giants Netball and West Coast Fever have played out a 62-62 draw in Round 7 of the Super Netball competition. Last weekend’s result was the Giants’ first draw of the season, while it was the Fever’s third. The Giants led by as many as eight goals in the contest before the girls from Perth stormed home to share the points.

Giants captain Kim Green was named the Player of the Match, with her steady head throughout a major factor in the result. The Giants will take on crosstown rivals the NSW Swifts this Sunday afternoon at Qudos Bank Arena.

RUGBY LEAGUE: Following last week’s bye round, Round 14 of the Ron Massey Cup and Sydney Shield will take place this weekend. In the Ron Massey Cup, St Marys will take on the Asquith Magpies, while Penrith Brothers will face off against the Guildford Owls.

fter finishing second in controversial circumstances last year, the Penrith District Netball Association returned to the Senior State Titles with one goal on their mind: to win.

The local association sent three teams to last weekend’s Senior State Titles in Campbelltown, with Penrith’s U17s team crowned champions of Division 1 while their U15 Division 1 side finished runners- up. Penrith’s Opens team ended their tournament in a valiant eighth.

Speaking with the Weekender, Penrith District Netball Association President Joy Gillett said it was the club’s best outcome at a NSW tournament in years.

“It’s been quite a few years since we’ve done this well, it’s very exciting and we are all over the moon,” she said.

“We are extremely proud of all our teams involved.”

Formerly known as the Netball NSW State Championships, the 2019 Senior State Titles saw 180 teams from 89 associations take part over the long weekend.
