anthers Chairman Don Feltis has suddenly resigned, ending a six decade association with the club. The Feltis era will end with immediate effect with the Board accepting his resignation at its meeting on Wednesday. Brian Fletcher will step in as Chairman while David O’Neill will become Deputy Chairman. The Western Weekender understands that 80-year-old Mr Feltis made his intentions to resign clear last Friday. Fellow Director John Hiatt has also resigned. While the Weekender understands there has been issues behind the scenes at Panthers in recent times, the decision to step down primarily relates to Mr Feltis’ age and a recent health scare. “I have been involved with Panthers for over 60 years, on the Board for 13 years and Chairman for five years,” Mr Feltis said. “I am very proud of the significant part both John [Hiatt] and myself had in the progress of the club and the Group. “I have great respect for the Panthers organisation and the brand and leave the Board quite satisfied with what has been achieved. I am 80 years of age, had a recent health scare and short stay in hospital and I am looking forward to taking it easy and enjoying the next chapter in my life.” The Western Weekender broke the news of the resignations of Mr Feltis and Mr Hiatt exclusively on Monday afternoon. End of a remarkable ride at Panthers Feltis had long association with Panthers and was CEO when breakthrough title was won in 1991 Story continued from » p. 1 It is unclear at this stage when a new Director will be appointed. Board elections are scheduled to be held later this year. Mr Feltis was CEO of the Panthers when the club won its first premiership in 1991 and was on the Board when the second came along in 2003. He was appointed Chairman in 2009. Mr Feltis was also instrumental in luring Phil Gould back to the club, a decision credited with helping turn the Panthers around both on and off the field. On Radio 2GB this week, Mr Gould paid tribute to both Mr Feltis and Mr Hiatt. “They’ve given great service for a long period of time,” he said. “It wasn’t unexpected that around this time they may be standing down... we’ll give them the farewell that they deserve.” Mr Feltis first became a member of the Penrith Leagues Club in 1952 at age 18. Before he turned 20, he was awarded the National Service Medal. In 1955, he joined the NSW Police Force, stationed first at Redfern, then Wellington, Bourke and Penrith. Mr Feltis’ rugby league career started as a player for Penrith Junior League.

He played footy wherever he was stationed as a police officer, then moved up to player coach in Penrith in 1964, continuing until 1970 when he began to focus solely on coaching. He coached teams in Penrith, St Marys, Richmond and Emu Plains. In 1986, he retired from the NSW police force after serving 32 years and received the Police Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. He joined the Panthers organisation full time in 1986, first as administrator of the junior league operation, then in coaching and development and finally as Chief Executive in 1991, when the Panthers won the Winfield Cup. The decision by Mr Feltis to stand down ends a significant era in Penrith’s history. But he leaves with the club in exceptionally good shape, with his decision to lure Phil Gould back to the club proving a masterstroke. Along with CEO Warren Wilson, Mr Gould has implemented significant change within the Panthers organisation. The Panthers have not yet issued an official statement in regards to the resignations of Mr Feltis and Mr Hiatt, but are expected to pay official tribute to both men in due course.

Lemonade stands and Chevrolets: My 1950s Penrith time warp Sometimes it’s the simplest of things that bring a smile. While walking around the Nepean River last Saturday afternoon, I came across something you’d expect to see in 1956 – a lemonade stand. Two young girls had set up shop on Nepean Avenue, and it looked like they had plenty of customers too – most of them applauding the girls for bringing back some wonderful memories rather than actually quenching their thirst. A few minutes later, I came across a young couple sitting in a parked classic 1950s Chevrolet, devouring a couple of recently purchased hamburgers. With plenty of families enjoying a picnic, kids having a ball on recently installed play equipment and young couples enjoying a sneaky kiss under nearby trees, all I needed was Ricky Nelson to pop out from behind the bush singing ‘Stood Up’ or ‘It’s Late’ to complete my 1950s time warp. I did visit the soon-to-be-closed Civic Video in South Penrith on the way home, given I was in that kind of reminiscing mood. We tend to remember things in the past a lot better than they actually were but obviously every generation has something that they feel defined them growing up. It doesn’t make the next generation any more or less informed, educated or experienced – and in fact their generation will experience the same thing when time moves on. But what things do we enjoy today that we’ll be laughing about in 40 or 50 years? Will the thought of carrying around cash just be ridiculous, considered an ancient relic of the past, replaced by chips and mobile payments? Will Blu-Rays and DVDs be confined to old boxes in the garage or antique shops? The post office? Gone. Bank branches? History books only for those. Or will we experience a comeback of sorts, a desire to be less ‘connected’ and more ‘real’?

Like an elderly gentleman I overheard in Grill’d a few weeks back, complaining about the “fancy” burgers and questioning why avocado plays such a crucial role in the modern hamburger. Life is a crazy ride, but if you’re feeling a little overwhelmed by the ever-changing technology in your life and the number of screens and devices surrounding you, why not have some fun and treat yourself to a trip down memory lane? Connect to the Internet using dial-up, look up a phone number in the Yellow Pages, set up a lemonade stand or throw on those old vinyl records that are collecting dust. Personally, I’m going tech free this weekend, throwing on a couple of 80s flicks and firing up my old Walkman – which believe it or not, still works!

A true gentleman of rugby league The name Don Feltis is synonymous with the Penrith Panthers. He’s been there for all the big moments – good and bad. Three grand finals. Tragic accidents. The evolution of the game of rugby league itself. Mr Feltis has resigned from the Panthers Board and at 80, will finally get to put his feet up and relax after giving so much to his beloved club. People will always have different views on management, administrators and directors of clubs, but in Don Feltis you have someone who is legitimately passionate about the Panthers, about Penrith and about those around him. He treats people equally, is always open and honest where club policies allow and always has the club’s best interests at heart. The next chapter beckons. Good on you Don.

Exclusive: Luke Priddis Foundation secures key site in Penrith CBD

enrith will be home to western Sydney’s first multi-disciplinary centre for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) after the Luke Priddis Foundation secured a site in the CBD. Creating such a centre has been a major goal of the Foundation, which was started by former Penrith Panthers player Luke Priddis and his wife Holly. News that the centre had been given the green light was confirmed at the annual Luke Priddis Foundation Ball in St Marys last Friday night by Penrith City Councillor, Jackie Greenow. “Having finally identified a premises for fitout we will now work on the enormous task that is bringing the Foundation’s dreams to Penrith,” said Luke Priddis Foundation General Manager, Tamara Vanantwerpen. “It is planned that this multi-disciplinary centre will house a sensory centre, parental respite and integrated services including an occupational therapist, speech pathologist, psychology and counselling.” As awareness and diagnostic services improve, the age of children identified as on the autism spectrum has broadened, bringing answers and relief.

But this in turn places greater demand on services and even further shortage of assistance for families in western Sydney. Ms Vanantwerpen is hoping the entire community rallies behind the Foundation as the centre becomes a reality. “The project management of renovating this building will take a community effort. We plan for this to be an asset to western Sydney, a comprehensive centre fulfilling the great demand for evidence-based and specialised treatment programs. But putting it together will be a mammoth task,” she said. “We will need builders, electricians, carpenters, painters and much much more, but the Ball has now raised the funds to fitout the offices – the rooms that will house the great work to be done.” Each year, the Luke Priddis Foundation holds various events, including the annual ‘Fitness for Autism’, to promote understanding of ASD in the community. The Foundation also holds workshops and seminars to help educate parents and professionals, such as doctors, nurses and teachers, who work with children with ASD. Police snapshot Oxley Park: Man refused bail over firearm offences

Luddenham: Naked man charged with various offences

A man has been charged after a shot was allegedly fired towards a vehicle in Oxley Park. Just before 9pm on Friday, July 24, police officers were called to Witcroft Place following reports of a shot allegedly fired towards a vehicle travelling along the street. Police found a 69-year-old man suffering minor injuries on their arrival. A 24-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to St Marys Police Station. He was charged with offences relating to the firearm including possessing ammunition, possessing an unauthorised and unregistered firearm and discharge firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm among other charges. The man was refused bail.

A high-ranking member of an outlaw motorcycle gang has been charged by police over an alleged home invasion in Luddenham last week. At about 6pm on Tuesday, July 21, police responded to reports of a home invasion in Ventana Court. The man reportedly entered the home with just his pants on but was soon seen running from the property naked. Police allege that the 38-year-old male consumed illicit drugs at his own home in nearby Portrush Crescent earlier in the day. It’s further alleged the man armed himself with a pistol and discharged several rounds into the air near a golf course on Twin Creeks Drive. The man was charged with a range of offences.

Penrith: Woman gets shock when looking out window

Penrith: Woman charged after police search vehicle

Penrith Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman caught a man in her front yard masturbating. At about 8am on Tuesday, July 28, the woman looked out the window of her home in Haynes Street, Penrith, and saw the man conducting sexual activities with himself. The male is described as being of Caucasian appearance with a beard. He was wearing a blue beanie and a blue sweat shirt with black pants. The woman yelled at him to get him away from her property and chased him away from her house. He fled in a white hatchback vehicle.

A St Marys woman has been charged with two counts of possess prohibited drug after police conducted a search of her vehicle. At about 10.30pm on Sunday, July 26, police officers from Penrith Police Station were conducting patrols when they came to Union Lane car park in Penrith. A 25-year-old woman from St Marys had her vehicle searched where police then found green vegetable matter that they allege to be cannabis. She was arrested and taken back to Penrith Police Station. After another search, police found a crystal substance they allege to be methamphetamine. The woman was later charged.

Sydney Science Park jumps latest hurdle and prepares for public exhibition period he Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue has welcomed the NSW Government’s Gateway Determination for the development of the Sydney Science Park at Luddenham, further cementing the region’s reputation as Australia’s innovation capital. The Sydney Science Park, managed by western Sydney property developers Celestino, will be set on over 280ha and upon completion is expected to employ over 12,000 staff, in mostly high-skilled, high-paying jobs, educate 10,000 students in key scientific and technological disciplines, and provide more than 3000 homes. NSW Planning Minister, Rob Stokes has confirmed that the Sydney Science Park has been issued a revised Gateway by the Department of Planning and Environment, which means the proposal can go to the next stages of approval. Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue Chairman, Christopher Brown, praised Celestino for its multi-billion dollar investment in Australia’s own Silicon Valley, a project that has the support of all levels of Government. “This Gateway Determination means that work can now commence on building the Sydney Science Park, which is going

high-tech business hub at Werrington Park and an agribusiness hub at Hawkesbury. The Park is connected by key infrastructure nodes such as the M4 and M7 Motorway and is located 10 minutes from Penrith, 15 minutes from Parramatta and five minutes from Badgerys Creek Airport. It will also be serviced by billions of dollars worth of new infrastructure that is being built to cater for the region’s enormous growth, including $3.5 billion in new roads. State Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies said the Science Park had a range of benefits for local residents. “This project means more people will be working and living locally enabling them to achieve a healthier work-life balance,” Mrs Davies said. Penrith Mayor, Ross Fowler said the project will be an important addition to the region. “A key feature of the plan is the inclusion of a new Town Centre, industrial research and development facilities, a school and a retail centre, all providing new employment opportunities in this area of western Sydney,” Mr Fowler said. Penrith Council will soon put the proposal on public exhibition, which will allow the community to provide feedback.

The rebrand recognises the growth of the Business Centre’s services to small businesses after being awarded the contracts for the Sydney West and Sydney North West regions under the NSW Small Business Commissioner’s Small Biz Connect Program as well as being one of just 34 organisations in Australia to be awarded a contract under the Australian Small Business Advisory Services program. John Todd, Executive Officer of the newly branded Western Sydney Business Centre, said that this new identity reinforces their focus on businesses across western Sydney, a change that has been a long time coming. “This is a significant change for our centre. We didn’t take the decision lightly but our brand needed refreshing after 28 years and we also needed it to reflect our focus on the whole of western Sydney,” he said. “We strongly believe that it is our role to find areas of our clients’ businesses that need improving. Our clients need a sounding board for strategies to exploit

The proposed Sydney Science Park at Luddenham received gateway approval by Rob Stokes, Minister for Planning, who visited the site last week to view the potential for employment, education and research. This step brings the Science Park closer to reality with approval to consult with government agencies such as RMS and the community on re-zoning the land for the park’s use. The Sydney Science Park would be a leading international centre for research and development in the food, energy and health sectors. Along with

Mr McLean said. â€œIn 50 years time, theyâ€™ll look back at the badge and know where their sense of history fits.â€? A display cabinet will be set up in the hall on the day with several memorabilia pieces to display how the school has changed over time. Old school uniforms, the badges that were changed to incorporate a spaceship to mark Apollo in the 1960s, old school magazines, the â€˜punishment bookâ€™ where studentsâ€™ names were written when they were hit with the cane and old school furniture are all pictured in the cabinet. Mr McLean is encouraging all former students to come along. â€œIf ex-students come to the open day and they havenâ€™t been here for a while, they might get a surprise where certain buildings are now and what the school looks like,â€? Mr McLean said. The Open Day will be held at Penrith Public School on the corner of High Street and Doonmore Street in Penrith tomorrow, August 1, from 12 noon. â€œThereâ€™s plenty of historical significance within the school that people will enjoy tomorrow,â€? Teacher-librarian, Ian McLean, has been at the school since 2002 and has seen a lot since he started. â€œItâ€™s interesting because I attended the 150 year milestone for my old public school a couple of years ago as an ex-student and now Iâ€™m seeing it from the other side as part of the teaching staff,â€? he said. â€œWe have been incorporating the 150 year association into many of our activities we have done so far this year.â€? Mr McLean mentioned several activities that were bigger this year because of the 150 year milestone. Former Governor of Queensland, Penelope Wensley AC, was welcomed to the school at a special assembly a few months ago as she is an ex-student. Instead of the schoolâ€™s regular walk-athon, they participated in an old-timegames-a-thon this year. Students were also presented with a badge with the school crest on it to mark the occasion.

otorists in Colyton will face continued congestion and traffic issues after a promised $1 million intersection upgrade was left out of the State Budget. The Baird Government promised $1 million to fix the Roper Road and Hewitt Street intersection to ease congestion. Shadow Minister for Roads, Jodi McKay said the intersection should be in the Budget given it’s an election commitment, but it’s nowhere to be seen. “They indicated that it would start this year, but it can’t start this year if it’s not in the Budget, and it’s definitely not there,” she said. “The Government has to fix this intersection. If it makes a commitment it has to follow through.” Ms McKay said congestion was not the only issue. “It’s an issue around congestion, but people are running the red light so it’s also a safety issue,” she said. “The other issue is that they indicated they will be doing a report to find out what is required for the intersection, and they haven’t released the report.”

Londonderry MP, Prue Car said the backlog on the roads has been a major concern for locals and motorists using the M4. “We know how many people are getting on the motorway everyday to travel to work – this is a constant bottleneck, a constant source of traffic,” she said “Where is the money, you cannot promise one thing and do another after the election.” Parliamentary Secretary for Roads, John Sidoti, said the Opposition was simply “scaremongering”. “The NSW Government has injected historic levels of funding into western Sydney roads, shaming Labor’s neglect of the region for 16 years,” he said. “The Local Member’s claims are nothing more than scaremongering. Let me reiterate, the NSW Government has a $100 million four year (2015-19) congestion busting and safety program and the Roper Road and Hewitt Street intersection is included in this program. This financial year we have to plan for the best improvements for this location – reputable upgrades require planning. “Surely the Local Member is grateful for our funding commitment to improve this intersection, something her government couldn’t deliver on.”

In what may prove a historic moment, the mayors and deputies of the three Councils recently met to sign a Regional Strategic Alliance agreement to investigate ways to strengthen the long term future of each city. Civic Video, the ABC Shop and IGA Penrith Nepean are all due to soon close their doors to Penrith residents while the future of Hooters restaurant remains uncertain after they entered voluntary administration a few weeks ago. General Manager of the Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce, Kerrie Reeder, said although sad, a number of the closures are understandable. “It’s upsetting when any business closes its doors but stores like the ABC Shop and Civic are unfortunately moving along the natural path that technology has created for them,” Ms Reeder said. “It’s all about progression in this day and age – my advice would be to find a way to diversify your business from similar businesses to have a chance at surviving.” 11 employees are currently on the roster at Civic Video South Penrith, and will be looking to find other jobs, including one woman who has been with the store for over eight years. Owner of the store, George Vatis, said it’s disappointing to have to close up shop. “When I bought the business over 19 years ago, I thought I could eventually work it up to a saleable point or to when I was ready to retire – it’s devastating to have to give it up,” he said. “Over the course of 19 years we have employed almost 200 staff whether they are university students or full-time workers, so to not be able to provide that anymore is quite upsetting. “We have just slowly weakened as a business mainly due to the introduction of online streaming services and the biggest hit of all, piracy.” After being open for over 25 years to Penrith residents, supermarket chain IGA Penrith Nepean is also closing its doors, despite a CBD location. Manager of the store, Tina Burnett, said the 15 employees on the roster have to find new work elsewhere. “It’s disappointing but we can’t do anything about it after the decision was made by head office,” she said. “Our 15 employees won’t be going on to other stores and will instead have to find new jobs.” Several retail stores across the country

Men of League launches in Penrith Exclusive: Local committee chosen to help members of the rugby league community doing it tough embers of the rugby league community in the Penrith area are set to receive even greater support in their time of need with the launch of a local committee of Men of League. Since 2002, Men of League has provided support and assistance to rugby league players, coaches, referees, officials and administrators from all levels of the game and their families. he Penrith Community Men’s Shed will be hosting an important evening this weekend in a bid to create awareness about prostate cancer. After taking over the reins as chairman of the group last year, Merv Adlington says it is an important topic to talk about. “Prostate cancer affects so many men around the world and it’s part of our goal, as a group, to promote healthy lifestyles,” he said. “The men who attend can understand what it’s all about, learn how important it is to catch it early, and the Blue Mountains Prostate Cancer Support Group will run through their range of services.” This isn’t the first time the Men’s Shed has run an event like this. They have previously partnered with Beyond Blue to run a talk on depression and they have also run a seminar on dementia. With ages ranging from 23 to 92 within the 54 members of the group, there are a wide range of topics to discuss that can affect everyone. “Prostate cancer has affected our members previously and after reading through statistics and information online, we decided we needed to run a talk on this,” Mr Adlington said. tudents at Werrington Public School will soon be learning about what it means to be healthy with the introduction of the Healthy Habits Program this term. The free initiative from Dettol allows schools to introduce a chart system to the students where they are given rewards when they do something healthy. Healthy habits range from eating a piece of fruit to games and activities that are done at home, to something as simple as washing their hands.

“The Healthy Habits program is structured and planned out with the resources provided to the school, making it really easy for us to implement the program,” Stage Two teacher at Werrington Public School, Claire McLennan said. “It’s simple little things that adults take for granted that we can be pointing out to the students so they can breathe healthy habits in everyday life – it will help the kids in the future.” The program comes after a high number of reported cases in this year’s flu season. “Children that aren’t normally sick have had to be off sick this year,” Ms McLennan said.

At least that’s what John Norman, organiser of the 2015 Interschools Chess Tournament, did last Wednesday at Penrith RSL. However, Mr Norman said the annual chess tournament does more than just channel the energy of the students from 20 local primary schools. “It’s problem solving, they learn to think ahead, they learn sportsmanship, they get to meet other students from other schools and they have a really good day to compete,” he said. “They have a chance to represent their school, which some don’t normally get to do if they can’t play physical sports.” Mr Norman said the tournament accommodates all levels of chess players, from the experienced to those that just want to have fun. “Chess club is very big in a lot of schools at lunch times, it gets them thinking and gets them away from the computer,” he said. “Teachers have their curriculum that talks about how we want children to be problem solvers and creative thinkers,

A permanent life-long condition, Cerebral Palsy is a group of disorders that affect a person’s ability to move. When the Johnson’s 19-month-old boy Jude was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy just three months ago, the Cerebral Palsy Alliance were quick to contact the family. The Johnsons decided to take part in the ‘Wear a Onesie For Cerebral Palsy’ fundraiser, being held today, to raise funds to give back to the Cerebral Palsy Alliance who have just become a big part of the family, organising therapists for Jude, and possibly a walking aid. At 19-months-old after completing the

goal of standing on his own, one that was made for him to reach by the age of two, Jude Johnson is well on his way to defying the odds. Jude’s mother Leanne Johnson said she was surprised to see him stand on his own. “The doctors said that because he has Cerebral Palsy his development is going to be slower than other babies,” she said. “He stood for the first time on his own and it was the first time he has really put weight on his feet – it was an amazing moment.” Having surpassed their original goal so quickly, the Johnsons are just excited to see where the tally ends up, all with the hope of raising vital funds for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance. y husband is a school teacher and was telling me recently that one of the core values they try to instil in the students at his school is serving others. The logic behind this is they believe no matter what profession or circumstance the students find themselves in later in life, they will be required to serve others. In business we often talk about customer service. And I’ve written about it often enough in this column so that if you’re a regular reader you will most likely agree that great customer service is essential to business success! But I wonder if sometimes we segment ‘customer service’ into its own category and fail to see ‘service’ (or serving others) as something that infiltrates every aspect? If every task we undertake and every interaction we have, is done with an attitude of serving, what would that look like? Perhaps rather than approaching a task that we need to do for a client as boring and mundane, we view it as serving

that person: how differently would we complete that task? If all your employees viewed their job descriptions as an opportunity to serve both their employer and customers, you are likely to witness a great improvement in morale and performance. The key to serving is to complete a task or action without expectation of something in return. Now of course, as business owners, our goals will include monetary benefits, otherwise we are running a charity. So there is an underlying requirement that what we do will conclude with payment of some sort! But our attitude towards the tasks we do and the way we conduct ourselves with clients, can either be focused on ‘what do I get out of it?’ or ‘how can I do this better for you?’ By focusing on ‘how can I do this better for you?’, your business will ultimately be much more attractive to prospective clients and will provide you with long term customers who want to stick around for more. nyone who has been in business for any period of time knows you can’t tackle everything yourself. Sometimes you just need some help. But let’s face it, asking for help can be tough. One of the most common characteristics of successful business people is that they are not afraid to ask questions or to seek help when they need it. We all spend many hours worrying about a specific problem when it could have been solved with a simple phone call. There is no such thing as a stupid question! When you detect a downward trend in your numbers, need new ideas, or just can’t find a solution to something, seek outside help. Getting real help requires having a willingness to be open and honest. Sometimes this means revealing the skeletons in your closet and, in some cases, admitting bad decisions in the past. Recognise that ‘helpers’ come in different forms. Of course there are professionals like accountants, lawyers, consultants and specialists, on a fee for service basis.

Then there is also some not for profit organisations that are there to give you advice like our centre. Our office has had many clients that come in for advice when they are on their ‘last legs’ in business. If we had been called on earlier, there is a very good chance we could have prevented the damage that had already been done. Unfortunately it is sometimes a part of human nature that people wait until the bank is ready to foreclose or the landlord has issued an eviction notice before looking for help. None of us have all the answers all the time, and sometimes we’re too close to a situation to be able to see it clearly. While asking for help can be tough, the right person’s advice can be critical to the success of your business. Just like an illness, most business problems can be cured if they are detected early. If you want to survive in business, don’t wait until it is too late for anyone to help you. There is no harm or defeat in putting your hand up.

HISTORY

Turning back Time

Paper that informed a growing region Jade Aliprandi looks back at popular local newspaper The Nepean Times, which wrote about some of the most significant events in Penrith’s history...

oming hot off the press for the first time on March 3, 1882, The Nepean Times was published by Alfred Colless and was to last 80 years. The first newspaper published in Penrith was the short-lived Penrith Argus, first published in 1881 but subsumed into The Nepean Times in October the following year. The publisher of the Argus, William Webb, was given a column in The Nepean Times, possibly as payment for the Argus. Mr Colless quickly became the master of local opinion, producing a newspaper of what many considered a high standard. Prominent questions of the day, the latest local news, telegrams, humorous extracts and the latest Sydney commercial news were all given places within the paper. The newspaper was sold through local and district newsagencies at a cost of threepence per copy and was published initially every Saturday. It remained at the same price for its 80 year existence. The first few editions were printed in a

The Nepean Times office. Photo: Penrith City Library general store on the corner of High Street and Station Street by William Joseph Rhodes who had also printed the Argus. A few months later, as the businesses increased in popularity, it was moved further down High Street to a larger premises then known as Besley’s building. In March 1895, the paper transferred again to Station Street where it continued to be produced. Alfred Colless was mayor of Penrith when he established The Nepean Times in 1882. He had been elected to Council in 1876 and remained until 1883, serving as mayor from 1880 to 1882. Colless’ aggressive newspaper reporting and editorial style saw a war of words played out between The Nepean Times and

other circulating newspapers, especially The Cumberland Mercury. The Mercury responded by accusing The Nepean Times office of editorial bias against those who chose not to use the printing facilities at the Times office. The competition in the local area was about to grow with the introduction of the St Marys Gazette on May 28, 1891, launched by George Nichols. The Nepean Times announced the birth of the Gazette with enthusiasm but became quick to judge the credibility of the paper. By September, Colless had launched an all out attack on the credibility of Nichols’ journalism and his ‘literary piracy’ when reporting local events.

Colless ended up purchasing the Gazette in 1895. He was involved in every public event in the district’s history as a journalist, businessman, and auctioneer. Alfred Colless passed away in 1920. The Nepean Times reported a message in mourning of him. It read, “With the concluding days of 1920 came the close of a life that figured prominently and honourably in the history of the Nepean district”. The business was passed onto his son, Alfred Sydney Colless. The paper ceased production in 1962. The Nepean Times remains the yardstick by which all local newspapers in the region are judged.

ow quickly a single, solitary month can change things. Four weeks ago the Panthers were on top of the world after defeating South Sydney 20-6 in front of a huge TV audience and a big crowd at Penrith Stadium. Penrith and Souths meet again this weekend and the journey of both sides since that Friday night in early July has been vastly different – and not what the result that night suggested. The Rabbitohs have collected all six available competition points since that match thanks to a bye and convincing wins over the Dragons and Knights. Penrith meanwhile have lost to the Roosters, Storm and Raiders in the weeks that followed that impressive win. The Rabbitohs regrouped after that defeat and were able to return to form

soon after and now appear to have their premiership defence back on track. The Panthers somehow fell apart, losing confidence against the Roosters and never regaining it against the Storm or Raiders. Just how much has changed in the last month will be evident when the two sides meet again on Sunday. The Panthers actually looked OK in attack last week, scoring four impressive tries including one to Robert Jennings off a slick scrumbase move, but again their defence let them down. The side conceded some soft tries and often couldn’t read Canberra’s enthusiasm in attack – a flaw in young players that is being further exposed by Penrith’s current injury crisis. Ivan Cleary said post-match that the Panthers “beat themselves” and he isn’t wrong – at times during the game his side looked to be on top of their opposition and in fact had a strong breeze in their favour during the second half that should have carried them to victory. Soft errors (the Panthers made a total of 15 mistakes) and some poor defence close to the line was enough to ensure the

For Cleary, this week will surely be about tightening up those two facets of his team’s game – errors and defence. After all, with four line breaks and 19 offloads, the Panthers certainly showed they can still be dangerous in attack even without their most noted playmaker in Matt Moylan. The Panthers welcome back Josh Mansour this weekend but the good news essentially stops there with Peter Wallace,

Dean Whare and Nigel Plum added to the team’s injury list. Cleary obviously isn’t going to fix all of Penrith’s problems in seven days and if he had the magic solution, he would have implemented it already. What he can ask for is a more committed effort – an effort where everyone plays for each other, where communication is strong and where his senior players lift the entire feeling within the team. It may be becoming evident that Penrith will miss the finals this year, but that does not mean that anyone has the right to put on a jersey steeped in history and tradition and not give 100 per cent. If you turn up on Sunday and you plan on running onto the ANZ Stadium turf in a Panthers jumper, you better be prepared to give it your all – even if your all is not enough at the end of the 80 minutes. Pride, passion and giving it your best is all that Cleary and Panthers fans can ask for from their team right now. Let’s get in there and fight.

$52,500 RAISED FOR NEPEAN FAMILY ROOM

» The Panthers handed over a cheque

for $52,500 to the Nepean Family Room last Sunday. It’s a tremendous donation, but well below the $100,000 fundraising target. The short notice surrounding the initiative was probably one of the key reasons, but the season-low crowd of 8,048 was obviously the primary factor. It was a very poor crowd figure considering even more people turned up on a Monday night to see the Panthers play the Cowboys earlier this year. One of the main reasons for the low crowd was the fact that members were asked to pay for this game in addition to their season ticket cost (members only paid for 10 games, and this match effectively became Penrith’s 11th home game). It was evident that many members simply stayed away, either due to budget concerns or simply to make a stand. Many members I spoke to were angry that so many tickets were given away as part of sponsor donations, yet the club’s most loyal fans were asked to pay. Anyway, $52,500 is still a tremendous result and those who contributed should be congratulated – it’s a great cause.

» The Panthers have been dealt more

injury blows with Peter Wallace, Dean Whare and Nigel Plum to spend time on the sidelines. Wallace has suffered his third serious knee injury in two years and will miss the rest of the season. In scenes similar to what he did in Bathurst last year, Wallace bravely played on with the ACL injury against Canberra despite suffering the problem in the first half. Whare has a broken thumb and is also effectively out for the year, while Plum was knocked out against Canberra and will most likely miss Sunday’s clash against Souths. Penrith’s extraordinary injury toll over the last two years is hard to believe – Ivan Cleary really needs to stop walking under ladders holding a black cat.

» The resignation of Don Feltis and John

Hiatt from the Panthers Board this week came as a surprise to many, but in reality it’s been on the cards for some time. In the fastest move since Usain Bolt last won Gold, the Panthers had already removed Mr Feltis and Mr Hiatt from their website and foyer display before the ink on the resignations was even dry.

What an ugly situation this is.

» In a funny moment last Sunday, retiring forward Brent Kite couldn’t get himself into Penrith Stadium. For some reason, his ticket didn’t work at the gate and he faced an awkward few moments before attendants realised that Kite should probably be granted access.

» There’s plenty of rumours doing the

rounds suggesting that Panthers winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak is still seriously considering undertaking a Mormon mission perhaps as early as next year. While Watene-Zelezniak has never ruled it out, I’m told it’s unlikely that he’ll be jetting off in 2016.

» Talking of Watene-Zelezniak, there’s

speculation that he could be a late inclusion in the Penrith team to take on Souths at ANZ Stadium on Sunday. Ivan Cleary didn’t name Watene-Zelezniak on Tuesday but don’t be surprised if he’s named an hour before kick-off on Sunday.

» The Panthers could be set to lose

another key man from their coaching ranks, with NSW Cup coach Garth Brennan likely to be targeted by Newcastle for next season. The Knights suddenly axed coach Rick Stone on Monday, with Danny Buderus stepping into the role in an interim capacity. Brennan is seen as an NRL coach of the future and has extremely close ties with the Newcastle club and the Hunter region itself.

» A few years ago there was talk that

the Panthers could axe their cheerleaders, but it’s been great to see the club get behind them in the last couple of years. injury. Speaking with the media on Tuesday morning, Soward expressed deep concern for his 29-year-old halves partner, who will soon go under the knife for the second time in 12 months to repair another torn ACL. “What he’s been through the last two years has been unbelievable. Personally it’s even shaken me up a little bit,” Soward admitted. “Wal’s one of my better mates, he’s my halfback, he’s our captain – it’s the second time he’s done his knee in two years, he’s also had personal problems as well. “Just to see him struggling really shook me up yesterday but he will come back.” Wallace injured his right knee during the first half of Penrith’s 34-24 loss to the Canberra Raiders last Sunday afternoon. he injured the same knee during a game against the Cronulla Sharks in Bathurst. “I saw him getting checked out at halftime, and he had his head down after the game so I knew something was up, but he didn’t let on,” Soward said. “It just shows what kind of guy he is, he doesn’t let his problems effect the team and he still lead the team in the second half. “Pete knew what happened, he knows when that sort of stuff happens and he played on which shows what sort of character he is.” It’s been a tough year for Wallace since successfully returning from a knee reconstruction in Round 1 this year. Not only did he miss five games earlier in the season due to minor surgery to clean out cartilage in his knee, but he also lost his mother Dianne after a long battle with illness. Wallace is contracted with the Panthers until the end of next season with Soward having no doubts that his partner in crime will return to the field again. “He’ll come back, he’ll come back for sure,” Soward affirmed. “Knowing Wal and how stubborn he is and how much of a competitor he is, he’ll come back from this and will be leading our club next year.”

PANTHERS CONFIRM PREMIERSHIP FAVOURITISM WITH 64-8 THRASHING OF CANBERRA

PANTHERS LOOK TO CUT DOWN ILLAWARRA AFTER CLAWING A WIN OVER TIGERS

The Penrith Panthers have stamped their authority on the Holden Cup competition with a crushing 64-8 win over the Canberra Raiders. Coming into last Sunday’s clash at Pepper Stadium, many fans thought a match-up between first versus fourth would be a lot closer, but the Panthers had other ideas, racing in 11 tries to two in an absolute avalanche. After PNG prop Stanton Albert opened the scoring in the third minute, the Panthers continued to pile on the points in the first half, scoring six unanswered tries to lead 34-0. Nathan Cleary, Jerome Luai, Fuimanu Enese, Kaide Ellis and Soni Luke all crossed for the Panthers in the opening half, with young Cleary converting all but one of Penrith’s first half tries. When teams hit the field for the second half, it was the Raiders who scored first with winger Thomas Cronan producing some great acrobatic skills to score in the corner. However, before the Raiders could get on any sort of roll, the Panthers hit straight back with a try of their own through powerhouse prop Moses Leota. Leading 40-4, Penrith continued to keep the score attendant busy with

The Panthers boosted by the return of Kieran Moss and Sam Anderson from injury, dominated possession to skip out to an 18-0 lead inside the opening 20 minutes with tries to Makino Filino, Ben Murdoch-Masila and Moss before the Tigers responded with two late first half tries to trail 18-10 at the break. This week I thought I’d gaze into the crystal ball and see if it would reveal just who will be there and who will not. Let’s start with the easy stuff and that is who will definitely be there and that is the current top four, Brisbane, North Queensland, the Roosters and Souths. They say 28 points is a useful cut off point for a top eight finish, so with that in mind, fifth-placed Melbourne, currently on 24 points, should win at least two of their final six games and get there. Cronulla are on the same points, but not as convincing in their footy, and they have some tough games coming up, but they do have Parramatta and the Tigers, so let’s assume they’ll manage at least two wins and make it. So that’s our final six. Let’s go to the other end of the table and see who is no chance, that being the Tigers, Titans and Newcastle all GONE! Parramatta, Penrith and Manly are all

on 18 points and need at least five wins from six. Only Manly could seriously be considered a chance of pulling off that minor miracle but, regardless, I’ll write them off. That leaves us with the Dragons, Canberra, Warriors and the Bulldogs to fight out the final two places in my top eight prediction race. I personally think the Warriors will be all at sea without the brilliant Shaun Johnson, so GONE! Canterbury are big stage performers and they’ll fight like their namesakes and make it. So the Dragons or Canberra for that final spot? Right now you’d say Canberra, but that early season Dragons form must be somewhere and their run home is arguably the easiest, so maybe that famous Red V has one last surge left in it yet to grab a spot, but I’ll write them off. The crystal ball then seems to say Broncos, Cowboys, Roosters, Rabbitohs, Storm, Sharks, Bulldogs and Raiders.

egardless of whether you recognise her name, if you’re a fan of Australian TV you will probably recognise her face. Penny Cook has appeared in a host of local productions including ‘A Country Practice’, ‘E Street’ and ‘The Flying Doctors’ and was also a regular presenter on the popular travel show ‘The Great

Outdoors’. Since those days TV programming has seen a huge shift, with reality TV shows dominating our screens. Talking to Penny about her early work in Australian drama, it’s clear that she agrees there’s just not enough of it around anymore. “I think there’s definitely room for more, the problem is that reality television doesn’t cost nearly as much as drama,” she said. “There’s not an awful lot of drama happening but Foxtel does seem to be leading the way in some respects. The ABC’s also got a good thing on at the moment. “There’s bits and pieces around but there can always be more.”

Though Penny is a recognisable face on Australian TV, she is also very passionate about the theatre having been involved in nearly 40 productions and the formation of the famous Griffin Theatre Company in 1979. Penny is currently starring in the theatre production ‘Ladies in Lavender’ which started its life as a short story by William J. Locke before being made into the 2004 English drama film starring Judi Dench and Maggie Smith. It’s a film that Penny admits she hasn’t yet seen. “I don’t know how I’ve missed it,” she said. “But then I thought I really didn’t want to see it when I found out I was doing it.” The story is set after World War I and follows ageing sisters Ursula and Janet who discover a young man on a beach in a Cornish fishing village. Being near death the pair decide to take him in and care for him but his arrival stirs up emotions in the women that have long laid dormant. Penny will be taking on the role of Janet, the character Maggie Smith played in the film adaptation. Taking on a role played by such a well known actress could have been daunting, but Penny said it’s not something she thinks too much about. “You don’t ever worry about that sort of stuff because our production’s nothing to do with the movie,” she said. “It’s just another acting gig,” she laughed. Along with Penny, ‘Ladies in Lavender’ stars Sharon Flanagan and Gael Ballantyne, with direction by Nicole Buffoni and adaptation for the stage by Shaun McKenna. The show opened at the Ensemble Theatre in Kirribilli in early July and so far the response has been hugely positive. The Sydney Morning Herald said: “Penny Cook and Sharon Flanagan are expertly matched and very convincing as the temperamentally contrasting sisters and, in his first Sydney production, young Benjamin Hoetjes is ideally cast as Andreas.” “It’s just a really delightful time in the theatre, someone described it as enchanting and I think it is, it’s an enchanting piece,” Penny said. For Penny it’s been nice to finally get the chance to bring the production to audiences. “It’s sort of lonely in the rehearsal room when you’re ready to be met by people that are going to watch you and so it’s a lot of fun when they do,” she said. Penrith audiences will have the chance to experience this charming production when it arrives at the Joan in August, where it will finish up its final performance on Saturday, August 22. After years in the theatre, Penny still enjoys each production as much as the last. “We’re play acting. It’s just grown up play acting and it is a lot of fun,” she said. ‘Ladies in Lavender’ will be on in the Q Theatre at The Joan on Friday, August 21 at 11am and 8pm and Saturday, August 22 at 2pm and 8pm. The show will give audiences a taste of the music and life of one of the most revered singer/songwriters of the 60s, who is most well known for hits including ‘Piece of My Heart’, ‘Bobby McGee’ and ‘Cry Baby’. After struggling with self destructive lifestyle choices, Janis overdosed on heroin at the age of 27, making her one of many musicians to join the infamous ‘27 club’. Ê Channel Ten’s new show ‘The Great Australian Spelling Bee’ will finally get underway this Monday, August 3. More than 3000 kids applied to be part of the show, with 52 eight to 13-year-olds making the cut. Ten has revealed that spellers were given a list of 2300 words, which could be featured in the program, five days before filming commenced. ‘The Great Australian Spelling Bee’, which also continues on Tuesday night, is hosted by Grant Denyer and Chrissie Swan.

Ê ‘Nine News’ has claimed the ratings year in Sydney having won all 21 weeks so far. It’s the fifth year in a row that Peter Overton and the team at ‘Nine News’ have beaten their opponents at Seven. For the record, ‘Nine News’ averages 312,000 viewers per night while ‘Seven News’ averages 235,000.

Having a Ball for a great cause Last Friday night saw more than 260 guests enjoy a fun night out at the Party Ball at St Marys Band Club. The event raised over $40,000 for the Luke Priddis Foundation, which supports children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Guests enjoyed an evening of great food, exciting auctions and incredible entertainment all while raising money for this very worthy cause. The Foundation is the brainchild of former Penrith Panthers hooker Luke Priddis and his wife Holly. Last Friday’s spectacular night also featured an announcement from Cr Jackie Greenow that the Foundation has found a location in the Penrith CBD and will be opening western Sydney’s first multi-disciplinary centre for Autism Spectrum Disorders.

hen Australian music historian Glenn A Baker wants your song on an album you know you’re onto a winner. Singer Rose Carleo’s track ‘That Season Again’ was chosen by Baker for the compilation release ‘It’s A Blues Thing’. Great choices

f you’re fond of a good Shiraz, grab a bottle of the 2013 Logan from Orange in the NSW Central Ranges – 2013 was a great year for Shiraz out there, and this one from Peter Logan is a stand-out. Medium-bodied and full of cool climate red berry flavours and spice, it’s a great example of what can come out of high altitude regions such as Orange, and particularly so in the hands of makers like Peter who is a more than dab hand with the variety. “It’s exactly what I want from our Shiraz,” Peter says, adding that at the same time the variety all but makes itself in the vineyard. “It requires minimal intervention in the winery, and is fairly consistent year in and year out. The optimal result is a wine like this one that’s a straight-up delivery of the succulent red fruits and spice of cold climate, high country Shiraz.” And interestingly while it bursts with that juicy, cool climate red fruits and spice, it has a lovely soft mouthfilling texture, and at $28 makes for a great companion at this time of year with a hearty beef pie. One to note: A 2014 Chardonnay from Fifth Leg in Western Australia’s Margaret River (pictured) is one of those whites that many consider is best enjoyed when served nicely chilled during summer time’s heat, but in reality is one to savour all year round. With a lovely crisp palate of crunchy apples that lead to tasty stone-fruit flavours, it has a marvellous lime juice finish and really does reward with being served well chilled. And while a great drop to simply enjoy on its own anytime, it makes an excellent companion with fried whitebait.

But they will say they would never let their own children do what they did. “Usually when they stop and think about it, they realise it helped them learn to take responsibility. “Parents also need to think about what motivates them. Are they really worried about their child being hurt or are they more worried about what people will think if their child is hurt?” So stopping your child from jumping off that log may be teaching them a whole lot more than not falling over. a myth and we really need to be careful about the messages we are sending and receiving. Many of us have been on a diet at some point in our lives, which also means that many of us have had that experience where you’ve eaten ‘good’ foods for several days before the pull of that chocolate brownie is too great and you give in to the ‘bad’ food. Often this is followed by a binge eating session, because

in diet land it’s all or nothing, there’s no middle ground. You’ve eaten the brownie, you’ve failed and you might as well give up. This food guilt seems to be a modern phenomenon. When I look at my grandparents I see people who enjoy the odd biscuit or bowl of ice cream but I’ve never once heard them express guilt over it. They just enjoy it and then get on with their day. What we need is to scrap the labels. We need to realise that our way of eating doesn’t have a beginning date and an end date. There is no wagon to fall off and no grand plan to be cheating on. What happens when I tell you not to think about a pink elephant? You think of a pink elephant, right? It’s the same with food, as soon as we know something is off limits we can’t stop thinking about it. Instead we need to recognise that while the nutrient content may differ every food can have a place in your diet. It’s just about moderation and what is best for your body and health. Balanced eating patterns don’t need to come with a side order of guilt.

exus Australia has developed the world’s first vehicle to display a heartbeat on its exterior in a demonstration of advanced technology and the connection between man and machine. The Japanese luxury marque collaborated with creative agency M&C Saatchi to produce a one-off RC F V8 coupe that integrates a series of technologies to display a person’s heartbeat in the vehicle’s bodywork. The first stage of the system works by transmitting the heartbeat of a connected person from a heart rate monitor to a bespoke electrical system in the RC F. The on-board system captures and processes the data before sending an electric charge through the RC F’s body panels that are painted in electroluminescent paint developed by US-based specialist Lumilor. This innovative paint finish glows when the electrical charge runs through it and displays the person’s heartbeat via a realtime animation sequence. “This latest concept follows other innovative projects we have developed this year including smart outdoor advertising billboards that respond to the car you’re driving and our new Lexus hoverboard,” Lexus Australia CEO, Sean Hanley said. “These activities underline the new, bold way we are behaving across all areas of the Lexus business.”

here won’t be much of an offseason for Penrith Emus coach Sateki Tu’ipulotu, who is set to get straight back down to business as early as next week. With the Emus’ season finally done and dusted for 2015, Tu’ipulotu said he’ll take just a short break before getting stuck into preparations for next season. “I’m having a break for two weeks and then I’m jumping straight back into it,” Tu’ipulotu told the Weekender on Tuesday. “Players will return to training in the last

week of October, but I’m just relieved this season is over and am excited about next year.” The Emus wrapped up their worst season in years last Saturday afternoon, going down to lowly Gordon 66-8 at Nepean Rugby Park. Tu’ipulotu expressed his disappointment that his players didn’t put in for the final game of the year. “It was disappointing because I wanted the players to play the last game, which was a home game, and give it their all,” he said. “I told them ‘this is the last game of the season, we don’t play until April next year, so make the most of it’.

“They must’ve left their brains in the dressing room before they came out because they didn’t do what I asked.” The Emus were the only club in the Shute Shield competition to not win any games in season 2015, with their only premiership points coming by the way of a draw against second last-placed Parramatta earlier this month. Tu’ipulotu admitted his third season in charge of the Penrith battlers was by far the hardest. “The first year was OK because you’re coaching players you mostly inherited,” he said. “The second year we started to get a nice influx of players come through but they

all left. And this year we took a big step backwards. “Next year should be a lot better because I’m retaining 16 players from this year’s squad of 23, so I’ll start to get some consistency and momentum going into next year. I’ll also be looking for new players out in the country. I want players who are committed and want to have a go.” The Shute Shield finals series will begin this weekend with Manly, Eastwood, Southern Districts and Sydney University all in the hunt for this year’s title. “I think Manly deserve to take it out this year because they’ve been knocking on the door the last couple of years,” Tu’ipulotu said.

Now that the dust has well and truly settled, how will you look back on the recent 2014/15 A-League season? What we achieved in the Champions League last year came at a cost. The A-League season did not live up to our expectations or our fans’ – however there were reasons for that, the physical demands exacted an enormous toll from our playing group. We are in the process of getting a squad together now that will once again challenge for honours this season and we are very confident in the approach we are taking. We are not in a rebuilding phase, we will rebuild this pre-season and be ready to challenge this season. The club made the decision to move on many players during the conclusion of last season. Did finishing in second last place contribute to many of those players’ departures? There has been a mix of reasons for these changes. What is true is that due to injuries and the schedule of last season we had to

bring in a number of players on short term and injury replacement contracts. With a squad limit of 23 players we had to make some tough decisions. We have re-signed some of our most promising young players and kept a core of the squad from last season, who we believe will be instrumental in our ascendancy this season. The club has already made a number of signings for the upcoming season, how will those new players put the Wanderers in a better position to contend next year? We’ve identified areas on the park we needed to address and have brought in some very capable players to those positions. Scott Jamieson is a western Sydney boy through and through, so it is great to have him playing for his home town club. Along with Jamieson we have brought in Scott Neville, Andreu, and Mitch Nichols who all have excellent pedigree and we have the utmost confidence that they will bring something extra to the team. A major marquee signing was just recently announced, what was your thought process in signing Italian striker Federico Piovaccari? As we have maintained, it is about getting the right man not the right name.

We have arguably the most passionate and knowledgeable fans in Australian sport, so there is a lot of expectation. Let’s not pull any punches here – the last A-League season did not live up to our expectations and we are doing everything in our power to ensure that this season takes us back to the top of the A-League and back into Asia.

Our priority was to sign someone that will give us a cutting edge. Someone that will fit the dynamic of the team and the culture of the club. In Piovaccari I believe we have done this and I am very excited about the season ahead. The 2015/16 A-League draw was released recently. How much of a say does the club have on the draw and were you happy with the outcome? The club has initial input into some areas of the draw but this is largely a Football Federation Australia driven process. In saying that, we are very happy with the draw and look forward to a successful season. Wanderland will be in full swing and with the support of our loyal fans we will be contenders this season. The Wanderers game played at Penrith earlier this year was a huge success. Is there a plan in place to play more games at Pepper Stadium in future seasons? Our FFA Cup match will be played at Pepper Stadium on August 11 which will be a massive match for the club. Do you think the Wanderers achieved success too fast, now expectations are high each year for a relatively new club? It has been a rapid rise for the club without a doubt, but that success has set a benchmark we don’t ever want to let slip. Every effort from the administration to the football staff and team is being made to ensure we remain a contender every

season. We want to earn our way back into the Champions League, we want to be at the top of A-League every season and we want success in everything we do as a club. Our mission is to be a globally recognised and respected football club, and this will only be achieved with success on and off the field. The club is known for its passionate fan base, but there’s been problems in the past. How does the club’s relationship with the fan base currently sit?

Does the A-League need to look at the structure of the competition given the impact other tournaments like the ACL can have on successful A-League teams? I think in a way we were the monkey shot into space on this schedule. Could we have been assisted with more centralised support? We believe so. However this season it looks like teams have been better accommodated for the potential of one of them going all the way in the ACL. It is not easy with our season window but even small compromises can be a huge help. Is there any exciting or interesting upcoming plans or concepts you can reveal to Wanderers fans? Let’s just say this, planning is well underway to make this season bigger and better than ever.

any say success brings reward and the GWS Giants are living proof of that motto after they recently broke their alltime membership record with over 13,000 members signed up for the 2015 season. It’s already been GWS’ most successful season to date with the club still well in the hunt to play finals footy for the first time in their short history. After a record 13,047 members in 2014, the club passed that mark last week and now have more than 13,100 registered members with four home games remaining. Giants CEO David Matthews said it was another exciting milestone for the club. “In just a short period of time we have developed a loyal and committed supporter base as this record membership figure proves,” he said. “I want to thank all our fans and especially our members who’ve got behind the club. We value their support and they will always come first. “We want to build a great club like no other. A club that delivers great family entertainment and embraces our fans.”

AFL Nikki makes her mark in AFL as sport’s growth continues NATHAN TAYLOR

ikki Perrett almost didn’t play AFL, instead she was considering playing rugby league until she saw some of the opponents she was up against. “When I went down to a tryout I thought I was going to get injured because the contact was pretty full on,” the 26-yearold told the Weekender. “I had a friend of mine tell me about AFL, so I went and had a kick, and it turned out I was really good at it.” Perrett wasn’t exaggerating, she was really good at it, and in 2013 she signed up to be a member of the Penrith Ramettes ladies AFL team. Two years on, and she hasn’t looked back. During her first season in the sport, Perrett finished an incredible second in the team’s Best and Fairest Award before going one better last season and taking out the top prize. 2014 also saw the local gardening supervisor win the prestigious Sydney AFL Best and Fairest Award as well as be selected in the Sydney women’s AFL representative team.

But perhaps Perrett’s biggest achievement to date came just recently when she was chosen to play for a combined NSW/ ACT team against northern rivals Queensland. It was the first time a Penrith player had ever been selected to play for their state with Perrett doing the whole club proud. While the Waterside resident and her teammates didn’t come away with the win against the Queenslanders, she had an amazing time regardless. “It was a great experience and a huge surprise considering it’s only my third year playing football,” she said. “I ended up playing the full game, which was challenging, but all the coaching staff and my teammates said I played a great.” The match between NSW/ACT and Queensland was the first of its kind for the growing female sport, with Perrett hoping there’ll be many more fixtures to come in the future. “Women’s AFL is one of the fastest growing sports there is and I really hope to make the side again next year,” she said. “In the meantime, I’ll be concentrating on helping the Ramettes make the finals for a second straight year.” The Penrith Ramettes are currently sitting in fifth position.

BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers men’s and women’s Waratah Championship League basketball season may be over for another year but that hasn’t stopped two local players from picking up statistical awards. In the Championship Men competition, Penrith’s Louis Brandt won for most steals in a season with 53. In the Championship Women competition, Penrith’s Alicia Poto took out the award for leading scorer with 313 points as well as the award for most assists with 79. In the men’s WCL competition, Manly-Warringah, Sydney City, Bankstown and Hornsby remain. Meanwhile, Penrith’s Tahlia Tupaea has arrived back home with a bronze medal around her neck after Australia finished third in the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championships on Monday morning. Tupaea and her Australian teammates defeated Spain 69-62 in a thriller, to earn their second consecutive bronze medal at the tournament. The Glenmore Park resident played exceptionally well during the tournament, which culminated in her scoring 12 points against the Spanish including two makes from downtown. Australia lost just one game throughout the entire tournament. The United States went on to win the title, defeating host country Russia 78-70 to claim the gold.

t was a disappointing end to the season for the Penrith Panthers women’s basketball team after they were eliminated from the Waratah Championship League (WCL) playoffs last weekend. It was always going to be a tough task for the Panthers without their best player in Tahlia Tupaea and that rang true, with the Sutherland Sharks far too good last Saturday at home 108-59. Sutherland were unstoppable from the outset, shooting incredibly well in the opening half to lead 56-23 at half-time. It just wasn’t Penrith’s night with the Sharks putting on an absolute clinic in the third quarter, scoring a whopping 33 points to Penrith’s measly 14. The Panthers fought back slightly in the fourth, winning the final quarter 22-19, but the damage had already been done as the Sharks ran out 49 point winners. Leading the scoring for the losing side was veteran Alicia Poto, who scored 26 points and recorded 14 boards, five assists, four steals and one block. The women’s WCL season will wrap up this
