eneral Manager of Richmond Race Club, Brad Adam, has admitted the future of the popular Londonderry-based facility is now well and truly under threat after NSW Premier Mike Baird announced his plan to ban greyhound racing from July 2017.

The club, located on Londonderry Road, has been in operation for more than 100 years and is currently one of the largest greyhound racing facilities in the state.

While Richmond Race Club’s direct source of revenue is from greyhound racing, the 75 acre property is also home to a number of other businesses including a gymnasium and vet.

Mr Adam said Premier Mike Baird’s surprising decision to ban the controversial sport in NSW will have detrimental effects on the business community and local economy. “From the local butcher who provides meat for our functions to the local mechanic who fixes our machinery and the local fence maker who maintains the property’s fences – the Richmond Race Club has always supported local business,� he told the Weekender. “Obviously not all of those businesses rely on us 100 per cent, but we’re a big club who spend a large amount of money maintaining our facility and keeping it at a high standard that has been set by the government.�

e’s not exactly a young colt these days, but Pete Martin will always have the Colts in his heart.

Mr Martin has been involved with the Colyton Colts Rugby League Club for 40 years, and his commitment as a player, coach and committee member will never be forgotten.

The 63-year-old was diagnosed with cancer 12 months ago and said while the doctors are trying to remove it from his liver, he is battling on and wants to stay involved with his beloved club.

“You’ve got to stay positive,” he said.

“At the end of the day you play the cards you’re dealt with, at least I’ve had a life. You look at some of these kids in Westmead Hospital who are three and four-years-old, and they may not have a life.”

Mr Martin is currently president of the club but has enjoyed a number of jobs at the Colts over the years including BBQ cook, canteen server, field marker, trainer, manager and ground manager.

He started coaching in 1976, and was instrumental in the development of an A-grade side which he coached for 13 years from 1980 to 1993.

“Coming in on a Saturday morning and watching the little kids run around, then they progress through the ages and go on to bigger and better things,” he said.

In his time, Mr Martin has coached Newcastle Knights legend Tony Butterfield, and remains close with youngsters

he watched grow through the club, like Scott Thompson.

“He’s a very loyal person and has great morals that have gone through the club, he sets a standard,” Mr Thompson said.

For anyone who wants to say thank you to Mr Martin for his services over the last 40 years, there will be a BBQ day at Cec Blinkhorn Oval in Colyton on Sunday, July 24 from 12pm.

“30 people directly will be affected then it’s all the flow-on tier one and tier two participants who are involved with the club.”

While greyhound racing and training is almost a daily fixture in some capacity at Richmond Race Club, its function room and bistro is also regularly utilised by many local sporting clubs including the Londonderry Greys and Cambridge Park Rugby League Clubs, the Hawkesbury Basketball Association and Colo Soccer Football Club.

Richmond Race Club also hold Christmas party functions and host local car shows.

Mr Adam said the club’s function room and other facilities may not be available for use in less than 12 months time.

“Greyhound racing is our core business, that is what funds our facility… it enables us to open our facility to other revenue streams,” he said.

“If our core business isn’t here then I don’t know whether the facilities will still be available.”

Mr Adam said he’s been overwhelmed with support from the local and wider racing community over the past week.

o matter what you think of the decision to ban greyhound racing in New South Wales from July next year, there’s one thing you can be sure of: Mike Baird has plenty of guts.

The Premier made the difficult decision despite knowing it could be politically fatal to him in rural New South Wales, which will be hit hardest by the decision.

It’s not the first time that Mr Baird has shown strong leadership to tackle a difficult issue.

He of course introduced the controversial lock-out laws in Sydney, which like the greyhound shutdown was called a knee-jerk reaction by critics, and a necessary evil by supporters.

As much as Mr Baird may be losing popularity in some quarters by decisions such as the lock-out laws and greyhound shutdown, he’s actually doing what we’ve desperately wanted politicians to do for some time – showing strong leadership and making difficult decisions that he believes have the state’s best long-term interests at heart.

Nobody can deny that the report on ABC’s ‘Four Corners’ program last year, which revealed the vile practice of live baiting of greyhounds, exposed a dark side of an industry that most day-to-day people don’t know much about.

For most the greyhounds are something they only see on a TV in the back of the pub on a Friday night; their popularity is limited to a core group of mostly older supporters who grew up when the ‘dishlickers’ were part of Sydney’s culture and social fabric.

For the punter who throws a few dollars on the greyhounds every now and again,

Mr Baird’s decision will have little longterm impact. Not only will other states continue to run greyhound racing, but I can assure you that Sky Racing will find plenty of other content to fill the gaps.

It is those people who do the right thing in the industry that most people, including myself, feel sorry for.

These owners and trainers travel around the state to races for prize money that sometimes equals only a few hundred dollars.

Greyhound racing has never been about the money, for most in the industry it is a livelihood albeit a modest one.

For towns like Dapto, it is the glue that holds the community together.

But as much as I feel sorry for those who do the right thing, and for those who put food on the table thanks to greyhound racing, there is a feeling in all of this that we need to grow up.

having them chase a fake rabbit around a track for 500 or so metres just doesn’t cut it in 2016, especially when behind the scenes there’s a much darker story to be told.

I hate over-regulation and political correctness as much as the next sensible person, but the facts speak for themselves in this regard.

Between 48,000 and 68,000 greyhounds – or at least half of all greyhounds bred to race – were killed in the past 12 years because they were deemed uncompetitive.

Up to 20 per cent of trainers engage in live baiting and 180 greyhounds a year sustain “catastrophic injuries” during races, such as skull fractures and broken backs that resulted in their immediate deaths.

We just can’t stand by and let that continue to happen.

Around the world, bans on greyhound racing have become the norm. In the United States, commercial dog racing is banned in 40 states.

As much as the greyhound industry will present its argument on job losses and its own efforts to reform the sport, the figures show that the industry is beyond repair.

By the time the shutdown happens and the full impact is felt, Mr Baird will be preparing for the 2019 election, which may well become a referendum on this issue as well as the lock-out laws.

He has taken a giant political gamble, which he should be applauded for.

I dare say that Luke Foley’s decision to oppose the greyhound racing ban is equally a gamble and significant risk.

This could get very messy.

0,000 people will miss out on the St Marys Spring Festival this year, with the cancellation of the popular 40-year-old annual event.

According to St Marys Town Centre, street upgrades through the Queen Street streetscape program have caused safety concerns that could not be fixed ahead of the September event.

Paulette Adams, St Marys Town Centre Manager, said she is deeply disappointed with the difficult decision. “I understand that our businesses, stall holders, suppliers and community will be disappointed with this outcome, however with thousands of people attending, the safety of everyone on the day is of the highest priority and we don’t want to risk serious injury,� she said.

However, Ms Adams said the St Marys CBD’s biggest festival will be back in 2017 when the works are completed in a new and refreshed Queen Street. “The festival takes many hundreds of hours to organise with planning stages commencing from January onwards, and we would like to let everyone involved know that the Festival, and Queen Street will be back in 2017 bigger and better than before,� she said.

he fallout from NSW Premier Mike Baird’s announcement that greyhound racing will be banned as of July 1, 2017 continues to rattle those with a heavy investment in the sport.

Thousands of jobs will inevitably be lost from the $800 million a year industry with race tracks to close and trainers to be put out of business.

Mr Baird said the decision, announced last Thursday, July 7, with Deputy Premier and Minister for Racing, Troy Grant, was made based on ‘overwhelming’ evidence of systemic animal cruelty, including mass greyhound killings and live baiting.

“As a humane and responsible government, we are left with no acceptable course of action except to close this industry down,” Mr Baird said.

Veteran Londonderry dog trainer Alan Proctor, who has been in the industry for 47 years and has 20 greyhounds, told the Weekender he feels Mr Baird’s decision is a “massive knee-jerk reaction” to the issue at hand.

“The reform that has happened within the industry in the last 12 months has been unbelievable and it’s basically just been overlooked,” Mr Proctor said.

“We don’t have any dogs being euthanised, we have a great adoption program, several security measures in place, and regular check-ups by compliance officers who can just turn up whenever they like but it’s as if Mr Baird can’t see the bigger picture.”

“I’m very disappointed in Mike Baird and Troy Grant,” Mr Proctor’s wife, Christine added.

Mr Baird and Mr Grant released the report of the Special Commission of Inquiry into the Greyhound Racing Industry in NSW, which found that between 48,000 and 68,000 greyhounds – or at least half of all greyhounds bred to race – were killed

Penrith’s Daniel McKinnon, who co-owns a dog that races in NSW, said he can understand the resistance against the decision but feels something had to be done.

“Unfortunately an investigation with results like this tars the entire industry with the same brush and I don’t believe that’s the case here,” he told the Weekender.

“It’s obviously going to cost a lot of people and I completely understand the resistance to the decision but, if the contents of the report are true, something definitely had to be done and some drastic action had to be taken.”

RSPCA Australia is now pushing for a nationwide ban on greyhound racing.

“It’s a great industry – it was being run so well in these last 12 months,” Mr Proctor said.

“It’s my lifestyle, it’s just what I do, I love my animals and I’m devastated.”

Cannabis case A man’s court case in relation to drug possession has been adjourned until next week.

Jai Williams-Gilchrist fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with possessing cannabis at Kingswood. “I use cannabis for my purpose of treating my medical conditions... to calm down at the end of the day and I was stupid enough to get caught,� Mr Williams-Gilchrist told the court. “You’re stupid in the first place to medicate yourself with it,� Magistrate Stephen Corry retorted. “I’ve been doing it since I was 13,� the defendant claimed. “That doesn’t make it right,� Magistrate Corry replied.

The matter was adjourned to July 21.

Driving ban

A father-of-three caught drink driving with his kids in the car has been barred from getting behind the wheel for six months.

Richard Shane Thomas Whitney, 36, appeared before Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with mid-range drink driving.

The court heard Mr Whitney, his wife and children had been at St Marys Rugby League Club for the badge draw before Mr Whitney, the sole commuter in the family, decided to drive home.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell labelled the move “very irresponsible�, questioning what the accused would have done had he caused an accident.

He was convicted and fined $500.

Officers injured as man escapes custody Penrith Police have charged a man who allegedly attempted to escape police custody following a reported break, enter and steal offence in Cranebrook.

About 7.10am on Tuesday, police attended Mcgann Place, Cranebrook, as part of investigations into a break, enter and steal offence last month.

Whilst police were escorting the 20-year-

old man to the police caged truck, the man allegedly pulled free from police and ran away.

A foot pursuit followed.

During the pursuit two police officers were injured. One of the officers sustained grazing to his hand and knee during the arrest.

Pre-election education promise questioned DALE DRINKWATER

ordan Spring residents are furious there is still no funding allocated for a primary school, claiming they were told the school would be completed by the end of this Government’s term.

Luigi Ragusa, Chairman of the Jordan Springs Residents Group, was at the Baird Government’s pre-election announcement in Jordan Springs in March 2015, and is adamant they identified the completion date.

“They said they will start in 2016 and be finished by 2018, but that was the one [candidate] that was voted out, but he did say that,” he said.

“That was the case, that definitely was.

It was definitely promised to be finished by then. We had the Treasurer (Andrew Constance) there, and he said they had the money to go ahead with it.”

Penrith Councillor Bernard Bratusa was running in the State Election for the seat of Londonderry for the Liberal Party, but he said he did not recall a start or completion date announced that day.

At the time, the Weekender reported the Baird Government promised the school would be completed in its ‘next term’, from March 2015 to 2019, and no correction

was ever made by the State Government until now.

A spokesperson for the Minister for Education has not flatly denied the completion date commitment was made, but said they are still sticking to an election commitment that is to begin construction in this term.

“The NSW Government has committed a new primary school to service the community of Jordan Springs, with planning and construction to begin in this term of government,” he said.

Two budgets later and not one cent of funding has been allocated, prompting Member for Londonderry Prue Car to question why.

“If the school will be completed by 2019, why has there been no money allocated and why has construction not started?” she asked.

Ms Car said once again the Jordan Springs community has been left in limbo not knowing whether the State Government will deliver its promise for a new primary school.

“The Baird Government needs to come clean and be honest with our community.

You cannot promise one thing in an election and then refuse to deliver,” she said.

“The community of Jordan Springs has one question – where is our school?”

Jail time likely if man doesn’t stay off the roads

Michael Hervey Comarmond has been ordered off the road until 2020 after committing a string of driving offences.

Mr Comarmond, already banned from driving until 2018, fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with driving while disqualified – the third time in as many months.

“You have really made a mess of things, haven’t you?” Magistrate Roger Clisdell said. “You know you can go to jail.”

“I understand it’s not a joke,” the defendant replied.

Magistrate Clisdell said there was nothing he could do to prevent him being disqualified for the mandatory two years, but quashed a habitual offender declaration sparing him a further five years in driving exile.

“Don’t drive again for heaven’s sake or you will end up in jail,” he warned.

He was convicted, fined $600 and disqualified for a further 24 months.

Woman caught drink driving with five kids in her vehicle

A mother who drove drunk with five children in the car has been disqualified from driving for nine months.

Maria Pascualy Apin fronted Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with midrange drink driving after failing a random breath test at Werrington on June 14.

Magistrate Stephen Corry questioned the number of drinks the defendant had, saying blowing 0.129 would suggest she had consumed more than two Jack Daniels and Cokes.

“You sure it wasn’t a bit more?” he asked.

He said she not only placed herself at risk, but also her children and the community.

She was convicted and fined $300.

Man told to stay out of the driver’s seat

Junior Lokeni has been barred from

driving for two years after pleading guilty to driving while disqualified.

“Stay out of a motor vehicle, well at least the driver’s seat,” Magistrate Roger Clisdell told Mr Lokeni when he fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday.

He was convicted, fined $600 and ordered to enter into a two-year good behaviour bond.

$400 fine after being sprung entering enclosed lands

A man sprung on the grounds of Supercheap Auto in the early hours of the morning has been hit with a $400 fine after pleading guilty to entering enclosed lands.

Paul George Stanley told Penrith Local Court last Thursday he was “wasting a bit of time” and “wasn’t fully aware it was against the law”, claiming there were no signs indicating he couldn’t go past the gate.

“When [the police] first pulled up I panicked and said I was looking for my dog,” Mr Stanley admitted.

Magistrate Stephen Corry said he understood why the police would be suspicious.

“It was 2.30am in the morning,” he said.

“You were in an industrial area inside someone else’s property.

“Do you actually even own a dog?”

“I own two,” the defendant responded.

Man checked with pawn shop before stealing items

A man who visited a pawn shop to ascertain the best goods to hock then proceeded to steal similar items from JB Hi-Fi has been placed on supervised good behaviour bonds.

A bleary-eyed Roberto Benedetto Elvis Moscatelli fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday.

“How JB Hi-Fi let him near the store I have no idea… but he still manages to get in there and take items that are not tiny,” Magistrate Roger Clisdell remarked in disbelief.

“What do I do with him? Clearly he’s got a drug problem.”

He was handed a number of 18-month supervised Section 9 bonds, with a condition not to enter the electronics giant, and ordered to pay compensation to St Marys Mega Cash.

Huge fines for man who assaulted police officer

A man who assaulted a police officer after a night out on the town has taken a massive hit to his hip pocket and received a scorching reprimand from a local magistrate.

Vito Pelasio, 21, faced Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with resist arrest, assault police and fail to comply with direction.

The court heard the defendant was among a group of friends who were asked to leave the Australian Arms Hotel on April 2.

However, once outside the establishment, he failed to comply with a move on direction, ignoring police and following his friend into a food shop instead.

When police held him up against a window, Mr Pelasio struggled and resisted arrest “purely out of self-preservation” fearing the glass would break, his lawyer submitted.

Magistrate Stephen Corry was scathing, saying it was not a matter where he would not record a conviction.

“This is really about your consumption of alcohol, not your friends,” he said, after hearing the defendant had distanced himself from his associates.

“The police have a difficult enough job to do without having to deal with drunk men fuelled up on alcohol.”

He was fined $1,000 for resisting arrest, $1,500 for assaulting police and $500 for failing to comply with direction.

Unconditional bail after being “read the riot act”

Paul Scott Edwards has been given a stern warning after failing to comply with

Community Corrections’ supervision.

Mr Edwards appeared in custody before Penrith Local Court last Thursday, having been picked up on an arrest warrant for breaching his bond.

“I’ll read him the riot act and hopefully he’ll get the message,” Magistrate Roger Clisdell said.

He was granted unconditional bail.

Driver was “way over the limit” when he got behind the wheel

A young man who drove drunk, colliding with another car, has felt the full force of the law.

Daniel John Springfield fronted Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with negligent driving and mid-range drink driving.

Magistrate Stephen Corry saw no reason to reduce the maximum disqualification period given the p-plater’s poor traffic record.

“0.135 is way over the limit,” he said.

“You made a conscious decision to drive... you knew you were over.”

He was convicted, fined $1,500 and banned from driving for 12 months.

Man drove despite licence application being refused

A man who drove after his application for a licence was refused has had his disqualification extended.

Penrith Local Court heard Jesse Morrish was denied a licence due to a demerit point suspension.

He was convicted, fined $300 and disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Man let off after failing to renew firearms licence

John Dean Sarkany, 25, has been let off with a warning after failing to renew his firearms licence.

It was “a little bit slack perhaps”, Magistrate Roger Clisdell said, but he was satisfied there was nothing untoward in Mr Sarkany’s tardiness.

The matter was dismissed.

St Marys: Woman tried to steal $60,000 worth of property

A woman was caught inside a property in St Marys after she forced entry into the home.

At about 2am on Wednesday, July 6, a 31-year-old Doonside woman entered a house on Glossop Street, St Marys by forcing the rear door open.

It is alleged she has filled a bag with several items and left.

A short time later she allegedly returned to the property, collected more items and placed a TV outside of a window.

Police were contacted and on their arrival, located the woman in the property.

She was arrested and charged with ‘break and enter’ and ‘possess housebreaking implements’.

The value of the stolen items was just under $60,000.

She was refused bail and will appear in Penrith Local Court.

Wallacia: Double trouble for young driver

A disqualified learner driver was caught by police behind the wheel last week and will face court next month.

At about 9.45am on Thursday, July 7, police were patrolling Silverdale Road, Wallacia when they stopped a 20-year-old Campbelltown woman.

Police checks on the motor vehicle revealed that it wasn’t registered, with further checks on the woman revealing she was a disqualified learner driver.

The 20-year-old was subjected to a random breath test which proved negative.

She was arrested and charged with ‘drive motor vehicle during disqualification period’, ‘use unregistered Class A motor vehicle on road’ and ‘use uninsured motor vehicle’.

She will appear in Penrith Local Court on Monday, August 8.

St Marys: Teenagers caught after stealing alcohol

Three males, two underage, were caught stealing alcohol from a bottle shop in St Marys last week.

At about 7.30pm on Wednesday, July 6, a 13-year-old male and a 15-year-old male, both from Lethbridge Park, and 19-yearold man from Oxley Park, allegedly attended a shopping centre in St Marys, and stole several bottles of alcohol before fleeing the store.

Police patrolled the area and located the males fitting the description.

The trio were searched and in the bag belonging to one of the young males, it’s alleged several bottles of alcohol were found.

The 19-year-old man was issued a criminal infringement notice and the two younger males were arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station.

The two youths were eligible to be dealt with under the young offenders act.

They will attend St Marys Police station and both receive a youth caution.

A woman was charged with high range drink driving, while her two young children were in the car.

At about 10.30pm on Friday, July 8, police were called to Town Terrace, Glenmore Park, after reports a woman had crashed into a fence.

Police attended the scene and spoke to the driver, a 32-year-old Glenmore Park woman.

A seven-year-old and two-year-old were in the car.

The woman was subjected to a breath test at the scene which returned a positive result.

She was arrested and subjected to a breath analysis test at Penrith Police Station, and returned a positive result.

The woman was charged with ‘high range PCA’ and was granted conditional bail.

The 32-year-old had her license suspended.

She is due to appear in Penrith Local Court today, Thursday, July 15.

Be prepared for the pest and building report When a buyer buys a property they take it as it is.

The purchaser will get a pest and building report and it will reveal problems.

You might consider conducting your own pest and building report so you are aware of what might come up and so

you can rectify any issues before your property goes to market.

Cleanliness A seller is required to give a purchaser a property at settlement in the same or similar condition as it was when it was first inspected.

Despite this I often deal with outraged purchasers who aren’t happy with the state of cleanliness of a property at settlement.

To avoid any unnecessary delays at settlement, keep the lawns mowed and the house clean so your buyer has nothing to complain about.

Utilise your agent This isn’t so much a legal suggestion but an important one. Agents are critical in the sales process. They are in a unique position to be able to speak to both seller and buyer. Tell your agent you are happy to have a meet and greet with the buyer before settlement to provide them with any copies of any documents you have such as warranties for appliances and share with them any expert knowledge you have about the property for example how to work the air conditioning system or reset the codes for the alarm.

St Marys restaurant robbed Police are appealing for witnesses following an armed robbery at a restaurant in St Marys over the weekend.

Just before 11.15pm on Saturday, July 9, a man approached a restaurant on Mamre Road, St Marys, as it was closing.

He produced a knife and an employee entered the store followed by the man.

The man removed cash from the tills before fleeing.

Police want to speak with a man who may be able to assist with inquiries who is described as being of Caucasian appearance and was last seen wearing a black hooded jumper, black pants and a balaclava.

This biennial sporting event raises awareness of the importance of organ donation and showcases the inspirational athletes who have been touched in some way by the transplant process.

undreds of women have died at the hands of their partner, a worrying trend that could grow without early intervention services.

Penrith Women’s Health Centre lost its only domestic violence caseworker after June 30, when funding was not reinstated by the State Government.

The caseworker’s services closed the gap in the Government’s Staying Home Leaving Violence Program, which does not assist women who are still living with their partners.

Now, domestic violence workers say those women have nowhere to go, prompting a meeting with local State and Federal MPs on Monday.

NSW Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Jenny Aitchison coordinated a ‘strength in numbers’ meeting with NSW Shadow Minister for Women Sophie Costis, State Member for Londonderry Prue Car, State Member for Blue Mountains Trish Doyle, Federal Member-elect for Lindsay Emma Husar and several western Sydney domestic violence workers.

“The Government goes on and on about wanting to get into prevention, they want to talk about policing and about legislative changes,” she said.

“But when it comes to victims services, your refuges, your accommodation, and your actual victim support and counselling, they don’t want to know about it.”

State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres said while the case worker at Penrith was only ever funded until the end of the financial year, he is hopeful the role may be reinstated.

“I am working with Minister Goward to deliver a new funding agreement that will support the continuation of the current case worker. I’m hopeful this will be resolved in the near future,” he said.

“Tackling domestic violence requires collaboration between Police, Departments of Justice, Health and Family Services. Only through an integrated approach will we lower the rates of this black stain on our community.”

Jane Gold, manager at Penrith Women’s Health Centre, remains concerned.

“We have written to Minister Goward and Minister Hazzard hoping to maintain the $100,000 we have been receiving for five years, with no real response from letters sent back in April,” she said.

“I did hear from Stuart Ayres’ office that the ministers are now chatting about what can be done, we’ve got our fingers crossed.”

Relaxing life ahead for ‘Poppy Smurf’ After four decades of helping others, paramedic Russell Lewis has called time on his proud career One of the more hair-raising incidents for the retiree came later in his career when he attended a dog attack in 2013.

“A woman and male were mauled by two pitbull dogs and I was treating the female when all of a sudden a police officer yelled out, ‘Dog! Dog! Dog!’,” he said.

“I looked around and one of the dogs was about to rip me to pieces; the quick action of the police officer present saved my life.”

Mr Lewis said the 85 baby deliveries he assisted with is something he will never forget.

“The mum of one of the babies I helped deliver, who was a breech birth born 12 weeks early in 1977, sent me Christmas cards every year until about 10 years ago when the family moved away,” he said.

The great grandfather of three also assisted with the delivery of two of his own children in the hospital delivery suite.

e’s delivered 85 babies, survived near-death experiences and pretty much seen it all as far as triumph and tragedy is concerned.

Now, after a 39 year career, local paramedic Russell Lewis is calling it quits.

Affectionately known as ‘Poppy Smurf’, Mr Lewis has worked as a paramedic in Colyton since 1995 and before that was at Randwick, Blacktown and Lithgow.

After joining the organisation at one of the most revolutionary periods of NSW Ambulance, that saw the first Intensive Care Paramedic Course rolled out, Mr Lewis hung up his uniform for the last time earlier this month.

Reflecting on his early days, Mr Lewis said until paramedics were trained up, their skills were the same as first aid workers, with their equipment and medications fairly basic.

“We made our own splints by stapling foam to pieces of timber and then wrapping it to the injury with triangular bandages,” he said.

“We also rolled and re-used our bandages and had dressings cut and sterilised at the local hospital.”

he team from the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) Nepean Centre are hoping to be back on track by October after their entire property was destroyed by wild weather just over a month ago.

Not only was the Orchard Hills centre ruined, forcing RDA Nepean to close down, but three of their horses lost their lives after the paddocks were left completely flooded.

Coaching team member, Helen Monday, said it’s been a long road to restoration and it isn’t over yet.

“It’s been really hard for all of us but we hope to be back up and running by our annual fundraising event in October,” she told the Weekender.

“We have gone through our buildings and basically everything has to be re-done, including building a new kitchen in our canteen.”

Ms Monday said the support from the community, local businesses and charities has been overwhelming as they try to move past their tragic loss.

“Everything in our tack room was destroyed but a lot of equipment has been donated to us from other RDA centres which is amazing,” she said.

Former Lindsay MP Fiona Scott has thanked supporters and the community following her defeat at the election earlier this month.

In a post on her Facebook account, Ms Scott said it had been an “honour and privilege” to represent Lindsay.

“Being a Member of Parliament requires 100 per cent dedication and can’t be done alone. I’d like to thank every person who has helped me deliver for our community,” she said.

“I wish everyone the best and I will see you all around town. I would also like to thank my team and many friends and supporters for all their love and confidence that they have given to me, I am eternally grateful.”

With winter considered to be the busiest time of year for firefighters due to hundreds of house fires, Station Commander at Regentville Fire Station, Phil Nightingale, said smoke alarms are a key factor in reducing the risk of fire.

“There are so many beneficial qualities to having a smoke alarm, or several, in your home,” he said.

“Smoke alarms work and they save numerous lives every year.

“We encourage local residents to re-alarm their home, whether it be with Photoelectric smoke alarms or with Ionisation smoke alarms.”

Mr Nightingale recommends having several smoke alarms in your home, especially for a multi-storey property, with the legal minimum requirement of one smoke alarm per level.

“We always recommend to have smoke alarms in the sleeping rooms too – if it’s not affordable for people, having one in the hallway is ideal,” he said.

Mr Nightingale said he regularly sees homes without working smoke alarms.

It comes as no surprise to me that Fiona Scott was defeated in Lindsay at the election and she can thank the PM for providing her with the opportunity to now get a proper job. Turnbull did very little to ensure votes in what he knew was a very marginal seat, preferring instead to rely on his perceived ‘charisma’ to carry the day and he and Ms Scott have paid the price for his conceit. I hope that Ms Scott has learned a valuable lesson from this and maybe she will be able to stand again as a viable alternative candidate in three years time.

Green Slip test Stuart Ayres has said that the Green Slip system will be overhauled and that the CTP Insurance will become cheaper possibly from July 2017 (Weekender July 7). I recently registered my car, and the registration and Green Slip cost $1000 – this for a car that is worth $4000. By the time I pay the Rego, Green Slip and Full Comprehensive it’s about $1700 and that’s before I pay for service, fuel or tyres. I remember well the promise from the then State Government when the NEW Green Slip system was introduced. It was supposed to make registration cheaper and save the motorists money. It did – for about five minutes – but the cost has been rising and rising every year since then. This overhaul is well overdue – let’s hope the savings are substantial as the insurance companies are the only ones benefiting under the present system.

A burst of flavour with every sensational bite DALE DRINKWATER

hen going out for dinner, I find that choosing my dish is the hardest part.

I always want it all, often seeking some kind of mezze plate or opting for several smaller dishes to taste the range of meals a restaurant has on offer.

In one sitting, the Lakeside Restaurant’s degustation dinner allowed me to try the chef’s best eight dishes, paired perfectly with a range of South Australia’s best wines.

As a whole night event from 7pm to 11pm, dishes were not rushed out one after the other, giving you time to enjoy The Lane’s sparkling, pinot gris, sauvignon semillion, shiraz and chardonnays.

I took my 50-year-old fairly conservative father as a guest, who was nervous about the prospect of having a meal placed in front of him he may not like.

However, the kingfish and tuna sashimi was his favourite dish. It was so fresh and full of flavour that he ate every bit of sea weed and soy sauce.

From oxtail and crocodile brochette to crispy soft shell crab and sticky lamb rib wellington, each meal was bursting with flavour and just enough in size to leave

you content by the time a selection of cheeses arrived.

It was a cold and rainy night in Penrith, but the warmth of Vince Capolupo’s hospitality negated the conditions that mother nature had in store.

A passionate restaurateur, Mr Capolupo made a concerted effort to know his guests by name, but didn’t overdo the questions about the food when you’re mid-bite.

Special guest Ben Tolstoshev travelled from The Lane Winery in Hahndorf in South Australia to discuss his wines with guests, the work behind each wine, and its pairing with each dish.

“Our winery is 450 metres higher in altitude, and at night is 20 degrees colder than the Barossa Valley floor,” he said.

“It’s like putting berries in a fridge overnight, retaining its high natural acidity.”

The Lakeside Restaurant’s degustation nights are run every three months, and are a great Friday night out at Penrith’s only island restaurant at the Sydney International Regatta Centre.

The wine maker at each event changes with each degustation dinner, with more information available at the Lakeside Restaurant’s website at www.lakesiderestaurant.com.au.

Lanes to be closed on motorway Lanes will be closed on the M4 at Claremont Meadows from next week as night work progresses on the Werrington Arterial Road upgrade.

As part of the upgrade, new work to relocate utilities will be carried out on the new eastbound entry ramp at Kent Road onto the M4 Motorway.

Work is also continuing to install safety screens for a new shared pedestrian and cyclist bridge across the M4 Motorway.

While this work is underway the motorway will be temporarily reduced to two

lanes in each direction for around 600 metres near the Kent Road bridge between Monday, July 18 and Friday, July 22 from 9pm to 4.30am, weather permitting.

Electronic signs will be in place along the M4 Motorway to advise motorists of the changed traffic conditions.

Motorists are also advised the intersection at the old Gipps Street and the Great Western Highway will be permanently closed from Monday, July 18, weather permitting, to allow work to progress on a new left hand turning lane.

M4 Motorway lane closures near Kent Road Bridge, Claremont Meadows from Monday 18 July Roads and Maritime Services will be carrying out work to build the new eastbound M4 Motorway entry ramp from Kent Road, part of the $70 million upgrade of Werrington Arterial Road. When completed, the Werrington Arterial Road will create a new link between the Great Western Highway and M4 Motorway increasing road capacity and improving travel times.

As part of this work, utilities under the M4 Motorway will be relocated. Work is also taking place to install safety screens on the shared pedestrian bridge. This work is being carried out at night to minimise impact on road users.

COUNCIL SNAPSHOT $700,000 could soon be on its way to the Penrith area, with the announcement of the next round of the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership Grants. Council has already identified several projects that will be eligible for funding in the area, and will have to match the grant funding received for projects if their applications are successful.

In Londonderry, Council hopes to receive funding to upgrade irrigation at the Kingsway Sporting Fields, in Mulgoa install floodlights at Peppertree Reserve, and in Penrith refurbish male and female toilets in Castlereagh Street. The requests are just portions of the funding allocated to each electorate from the State Government.

Penrith Council has acknowledged the submissions made by the community for its city park project.

The plan for a city park in Allen Place car park was announced in December last year, to rezone the area from commercial to mixed use, opening it up to residential uses. After public exhibition closed on May 30, a total of 17 submissions were reviewed with traffic and parking the main concern in seven submissions. Concerns were raised that a loss of car parking in the area will impact negatively on businesses, especially if other car parks

are not built in replace of it. Council said that as Penrith grows parking spaces will increase and be located in multi-storey car parks at Union Road, Soper Place and Judges Car Park.

Council has thrown their support behind inserting an incentives clause into its Local Environment Plan 2010.

The clause is to allow moving away from current building heights and floor space controls in their ‘Key Sites’ in exchange for public benefit.

Independent consultants created a series of principals that must be used to determine what is in fact public benefit, and a re-elected Council after September will determine whether to accept an offer of public benefit. Councillors raised concerns over the transparency of the projects at Key Sites, and were in favour of developing policies to keep Council at arm’s length, to ensure they can’t be accused of being biased. Council’s City Planner said there will be a transparent list of projects, and agreements will be similar to Section 94 planning.

The next Council meeting is an Ordinary Council Meeting on Monday, July 25 at 7.30pm at the Civic Centre. The general public is able to attend meetings held at the Council chambers.

To be held on Friday, August 5, the event will see people either register to sleep in their car or sponsor someone who is sleeping out, all in the name of a good cause.

St Marys Aussie mortgage broker, Kim Horan, was one of the first people to support the 2016 event by registering to sleep in her car.

“I think it’s important to get involved in local initiatives such as this,” she said.

“It’s hard not to get overwhelmed with the needs out there in the community but for me, participating makes me feel part of the solution – I decided to get involved rather than just turn off from the issue of homelessness.”

Fusion event organiser, Judy Tweeddale, said it’s a great initiative.

“We’re keen for others to join in so together, we can ensure that this often hidden issue is brought into the light,” she said.

Countdown lights installed Pedestrian countdown timers have been installed at High Street and Station Street in Penrith to inform pedestrians how much time they have to cross the road safely.

The new units installed in Penrith are part of a statewide rollout of pedestrian countdown timers at 35 intersections announced last year.

“No one is exempt from pedestrian safety; every single one of us is a pedestrian at some point in our lives,” said State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres.

“Already this year 37 pedestrians have lost their lives on our roads which shows the importance of programs like this.

“This program puts NSW up there with a long list of countries right across the world using pedestrian countdown timers including New York, Tokyo and Singapore.”

Mr Ayres said on average 50 pedestrians are killed and more than 1600 injured on NSW roads each year – and almost a quarter of these casualties take place at intersections with traffic signals.

“The new countdown timers will encourage people to cross the road only when it is safe to do so,” Mr Ayres said.

“We know these timers work – they’ve been thoroughly tested to check they can effectively boost pedestrian safety at these intersections.

“At the same time, safer roads are only one piece of the puzzle – all road users have a part to play in improving safety.”

was recently driving behind a van belonging to a business and underneath the business name was the tagline “When Quality Matters”. It is a great tagline, however, I was somewhat unconvinced they would live up to it, as the lettering was faded and peeling off the van. It gave the impression that despite their promise, they weren’t really committed to ‘quality’. They quite possibly do provide a high quality service – but unfortunately my first impression of them defied that promise.

I am sure you can think of many businesses, large and small, who promise one thing and deliver another. A tagline or motto, is in theory supposed to be a summary of a company’s mission or purpose, and should deliver on the promise it advertises.

Whether or not you have a tagline, somewhere in your promotional content, you will be telling people what it is you intend to do for them. And if you want to stand out from the crowd, it is good to find a niche or a specific offer that you can provide, which you might develop into a tagline. But it is very

important to consider carefully what your business promises.

You have probably heard the phrase ‘under promise, over deliver’? While I am not suggesting that you aim low, it is important to ensure that you do not promise something that is impossible for you to provide. Your customers are going to be much more impressed if something is completed or delivered earlier than expected – or if they receive something extra that they weren’t expecting – than if they keep hearing excuses from you as to why you haven’t met an expectation.

Some businesses have grand promises that they fully expect will sometimes be broken (for example, “we will deliver in under 30 minutes”). However, in addition, they have in place a policy and practice for compensating the customer if they cannot keep their promise. So for their customers, it is a ‘win/win’ situation. For most small businesses though, it is far more prudent and cost-effective to develop promises that can be kept and that continue to hold your business in high esteem.

Instagram has introduced Instagram for Business pages. If you have an Instagram profile for your business, you may have noticed a blue pop up box when logging into your account recently.

This switches your existing “personal” Instagram business page to an actual “business” page.

New business page benefits include: CONTACT: You can add your phone number, email, and address to your profile, so your customers can reach you directly via a CONTACT button.

INSIGHTS: Much like Facebook Insights, you can now learn about your followers and see how your posts are performing.

You can see things like the total number of times your posts have been seen, and the average times your followers are on Instagram on a typical day – so you know the most beneficial time to post.

PROMOTIONS: Create promotions on Instagram that help you grow your business. Previously this had to be created through Facebook, but can now

be created straight from the Insta app.

ADDRESS: Your business address now also appears on the bottom of your profile bio, which leaves more characters available for you to customise your bio.

INDUSTRY: Your page will also have an Industry sector (for example Spas/ Beauty/Personal Care) including in your profile bio so your potential followers can determine what exactly it is you offer.

HOW TO MAKE THE SWITCH: Just click on the pop-up, or switch it over at any time in your page’s settings. You can also switch back to a “personal” account at any time.

Facebook update: • Reach and referral traffic will continue to decline for business pages. In response you should be focusing more on video as it is proven to get the most interactions.

• Properly design your posts and make sure they are relevant. This will ensure they get maximum shares.

• Monitor your insights daily or as often as possible to find your best performing posts.

Dishlickers have long history

A

n industry that has been fuelling jobs in western Sydney for the last 70 years is coming to an end.

Greyhound racing’s last legal day of operation in NSW is now June 30 next year, and that means the end of the dogs at Penrith’s closest greyhound race club, Richmond Race Club.

After hosting the gallops and trots at Londonderry since 1911, the club first branched into the greyhounds when it started to become popular in the 1950s.

The gallops ceased shortly after in 1952,

and three years later greyhound racing was introduced on the club’s straight track, racing on Saturday afternoons.

Greyhound racing in western Sydney was huge, and Richmond Race Club was the first greyhound racing club in NSW to have their races on television.

The TAB betting system that allowed offcourse betting encouraged the race club to develop a new grass circle track, and in 1969 punters could bet on greyhound races at Richmond from elsewhere.

Following in the steps of horse racing, harness racing diminished at the club by 1997, but greyhound racing remained strong.

The dogs were now the only sport at the club but by 1999 they had stopped racing on grass, and instead shifted to the loan circuit of sand and clay.

Over the last 17 years, Richmond Race Club has given many local dog owners and punters great memories, on average hosting around two race meets per week.

The downfall in the industry began in February last year, when live baiting was exposed by the ABC. While some owners and trainers continued to act humanely and within the law, many across the state did not.

From next year greyhound racing will be a thing of the past in NSW.

A major tanker crashed on the Great Western Highway at Werrington, shutting down the busy road and causing hours of lengthy delays.

Penrith CBD’s Pop Up Park was made a permanent fixture, and IGA Werrington County promised to match the prices of supermarket giants Coles and Woolworths.

Member for Londonderry Prue Car and NSW Labor Leader Luke Foley were furious over the lack of funding from the State Government for a school in Jordan Springs.

I

t’s a frustrating time in Pantherland at the moment, with fans and Members quickly losing patience as season 2016 starts to slip away; left behind as a year of what-ifs and unfulfilled expectations.

And while history may ultimately show that this current squad goes on to win competitions and become a true premiership threat, there is a legitimate question to be asked about whether or not the panic button was hit way too early in regards to the youth policy that appears to dominate coach Anthony Griffin’s game plans at present.

The excuse of youth and immaturity is a fair one – Penrith fielded one of the most inexperienced sides in its history against the Sharks last weekend – but as I’ve written before, it is of the club’s own doing.

Instead of persisting with the experience of Jamie Soward to assist teenager Nathan Cleary settle in to first grade football, Griffin has instead opted to put a makeshift five-eighth in Bryce Cartwright alongside him. It’s an experiment that hasn’t really worked but with Soward on a plane to England, the Panthers are left without any real solution to the halves problem until Te Maire Martin returns. Even then, the combination will be so inexperienced that it’s unlikely to turn results around quickly.

While the Panthers will argue that Soward, James Segeyaro and Elijah Taylor needed to be moved on, there is no doubt that it has left a huge gap in this year’s squad as far as experience is concerned.

In fact, the Panthers have offloaded more than 400 games of top grade experience just in those three players – experience that was quite obviously lacking against the Sharks last weekend; experience that could be the difference between playing finals football this year or booking an early end of season holiday.

Griffin has essentially dismantled everything that Ivan Cleary built at Penrith – perhaps that is what was needed and I have no doubt that 2017 and 2018 may well prove that point, but it means the dreaded ‘re-building’ word has entered the rugby league vocabulary at Panthers again and that will no doubt have fans and Members pulling their hair out.

They’ve heard it all before.

This Sunday the Panthers take on arch rivals Parramatta and yet again, it’s a match the team should and must win.

But as the weeks go by in season 2016, it’s harder and harder to be confident.

The Eels are down and out, rocked by salary cap scandals, court cases and offfield drama, but they still turn up every week and produce an 80 minute effort that is the envy of many clubs behind or around them on the competition table.

More to the point, their fans keep turning up – it is their loyalty that is the untold story of the club’s chaotic season.

We could go through player match-ups,

strengths, weaknesses and statistics all day, but in reality it all comes down to two things: holding the football and aiming up in defence.

The return of Matt Moylan, Josh Mansour and Tyrone Peachey into first grade should provide at least some balance to that inexperience.

Lose here, and I’m willing to say that 2016 is done and dusted.

PEACH RETURNS » Tyrone Peachey will return to first

grade this weekend after being dropped by coach Anthony Griffin last week for disciplinary reasons. The 24-year-old turned up considerably late for a training session and Griffin was having none of it – sending the utility back to reserve grade for a week. The Panthers have implemented strict guidelines surrounding training and behaviour ever since Griffin arrived, and have a range of rules surrounding the new Rugby League Academy facility. While Peachey was disappointed, it’s understood he took his medicine and accepted the decision without too much fuss. The whole thing was very interesting as I was already hearing rumblings that Peachey may not be in Penrith’s long-term plans.

» I’m told Penrith’s 2017 jersey design

will be quite a surprise. Watch this space but expect the jersey to be released early in the off-season.

» Never before has a cat caused so much

fuss at the footy. The now infamous Pepper Stadium cat, who infiltrated the field during last Sunday’s game against the Sharks, has its own Twitter account (@ penrithcat) and has become the subject of a range of Internet memes. For the record, the cat hasn’t been since his five seconds of fame on Sunday afternoon, but it’s understood it’s not the first time it has been seen in the stadium surrounds.

The Panthers ran a poll through their website and social media accounts on Monday and ultimately named the cat Ryan Purrdler. No word yet on if the cat was included in the official crowd figure on Sunday.

» James Segeyaro has made his debut for

English Super League club Leeds, but he’s still making headlines here in Australia.

Media reports through the week suggested that Segeyaro is seen in the background of a sex tape involving his former room mate, Eels star Corey Norman.

» If you’re looking for somewhere to

watch Penrith’s game against the Broncos on July 22, the Penrith branch of Men of League has the answer. They’re running a special event from 5.30pm, which will include drinks, finger food, raffles and the Panthers v Broncos NRL match on the big screen at the Australian Arms Hotel.

nglish sensation Zak Hardaker came to the NRL with plenty of hype after winning the Super League’s Man of Steel award in 2015. Now the 24-year-old is ready to give it his all over the next two months in the hope of securing a long-term deal.

Hardaker arrived at Panthers HQ two weeks ago in a swap for livewire hooker James Segeyaro, who was sent to Hardaker’s former club, Leeds, in the English Super League.

Speaking with Extra Time this week, the versatile back said he’s enjoyed every minute of his short time in Penrith.

“It’s brilliant, it’s a lot different to back home. Penrith is more relaxed and slowpaced, which is pretty good,” he said.

“Leeds is a big city and is very rushed but it’s brilliant around here and everyone’s made me feel really welcome.”

With the June 30 transfer deadline approaching, Panthers bosses worked fast to shift out of favour hooker James Segeyaro in order to land Hardaker for the remainder of the season.

Hardaker admitted he knew very little about Penrith before jumping on the plane Down Under but made sure he did his research on the way over.

“I knew a few people that played for Penrith and I used to watch the NRL back

home, so I was somewhat familiar with it, but there was a lot of stuff I didn’t know,” he said.

“The transfer deal went through quite fast and I was on a plane within four days, so I did plenty of research on the club and surrounding area before I came over because I didn’t want to be clueless.”

Hardaker touched down in Sydney late last month alongside his stepfather Kevin Williams, who accompanied his stepson on the trip to Australia to help him settle in.

Hardaker said his stepfather was already a Panthers tragic.

“He loves it… when he came to watch me at training someone gave him a Panthers jacket to wear and I don’t think he’s taken it off,” he said.

“He’s staying for a month to make sure I settle in and everything is alright. It’s been brilliant to have him here, we’ve gone sightseeing on my days off and he’s keeping me busy.”

Hardaker, an English international, is contracted with the Panthers until the end of the season but is hopeful of securing a contract for next year, if his form lives up to the hype.

“I’m here until October and this is basically a trial period to firstly see if I can cut it in the NRL; secondly to earn a contract; and thirdly to see if can live out here,” he said.

“I’ve wanted to join the NRL for the last three or four years and I’m pretty confident about my own abilities and what I want to achieve.”

GALLEN CALLS TIME The selection of Paul Gallen for Origin III in Sydney has been a hot topic of conversation for all footy fans over the past week.

For a player who has given incredible service to NSW over a number of seasons, to be given the chance to be farewelled in front of a home crowd is something that on the surface seems pretty straight forward and highly deserving for both Paul and his family.

However, given that the selectors have called in new blood and appear to be preparing for the future, the selection of Gallen in Wednesday’s dead rubber has caused much discussion in the media.

Many believe that if the selectors are serious about the future then both Gallen and Robbie Farah should both not have been playing on Wednesday night.

Some media commentators have gone

as far as suggesting that both players should have in fact displayed good leadership by actually stepping aside for game three!

Whatever the views of both the fans and the media, I am confident that Gallen and Farah were determined to finish their State of Origin careers on a high and did all they could to show the incumbent players what it means to pull on a NSW jersey!

The pizzas were ready in the Drew household and we certainly enjoyed farewelling two great servants of the game.

Still on Paul Gallen, he will be pleased with the result of the Sharks last Sunday against the Panthers, now notching up 13 straight wins this season. Not the result the Panthers were after, but for Shane Flanagan getting that win with five players on Origin duty will only help to build

their resolve as we lead in to the back end of the season. Ben Barba really stood up in the absence of some key players and his absolutely electric form will be a

worry for their opposition in the remaining rounds of the season.

Good luck to the Panthers this Sunday against my other old team, Parramatta!

The 2003 commemorative jersey was released last week and is now available for purchase.

Featuring the names of all players who played first grade in the 2003 season, the 2003 commemorative jersey will be worn in the Panthers home game

xtra time will be played in all Finals Series matches – including Grand Finals – in 2016 and beyond.

The recommendation for a period of extra time prior to golden point in Finals matches has been officially ratified by the ARL Commission.

Under the new rule, five minutes of extra time each way will be played in the event of a draw at the conclusion of standard time. If scores are level at the end of extra time, the game will go to golden point.

The change follows extensive consultation with the game’s stakeholders, including the NRL Competition Committee, coaches, the RLPA, the

playing group, as well as supporters.

“We engaged all the relevant stakeholders and there was strong support for this change,” NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said.

“The stakes are clearly high in Finals Series matches, and especially in the Grand Final, so it makes sense to have a period of extra time prior to golden point.

“There were a number of alternatives considered but the consensus by and large was that the game should introduce extra time in Finals Series matches.

“Not only will it mean a more expansive style of football in the extra time period, it will also be less likely that a team is eliminated in golden point.”

T

here used to be a video played at Penrith Stadium as part of the pre-game build-up that featured Steve Carter saying the words “never give up, never give up”.

The video was used during a tough time at the Panthers and epitomised not only where Penrith was placed during that period in the late 1990’s but Steve Carter himself as a player.

He was a dedicated, passionate player who wore his heart on his sleeve and was Penrith to the core.

To this day, nobody has played more first grade games for Penrith than Steve Carter.

He clocked up 244 appearances for the Panthers, a record that won’t be broken for many seasons to come given nobody in the current squad has even played half that amount of games for the men in black.

He made his debut for the Panthers in 1988, and was part of a wonderful era for the club that included the 1991 premiership.

Carter stuck solid with the Panthers even during the tough times, eventually retiring in 2001.

He probably should have retired a year earlier, but with the club record for matches played on the line, he opted to

stick around for the 2001 season despite injuries plaguing his later years.

Carter’s long career at Penrith came during perhaps the most up and down time in the club’s long history. He was there for that first premiership, but he was also there when his teammate Ben

Alexander was tragically killed in a car crash a year later.

He was also there during the Super League years and witnessed first hand the club’s fight for survival, and he was there when a new era began in 2000 – the Panthers were

back in black and on the cusp of an exciting new period.

During his 14 years with the Panthers, Carter scored 65 tries and even managed to kick three goals – two in 1998 and another in his final year at the club.

Carter was never a glamour player of the game, and he only made one appearance for New South Wales – in 1992 – but he will forever be remembered as part of Penrith folklore.

Recently, he was named as a finalist in the Panthers Hall of Fame concept, but narrowly missed out on being inducted.

ormer Penrith five-eighth Jamie Soward has vowed to return to the club while farewelling Panthers fans before last Sunday’s match against the Cronulla Sharks.

The 30-year-old arrived in England this week to take up an end of season stint with second tier Super League club the London Broncos.

Speaking with ground announcer Scott McRae, Soward said he decided to leave the club 18 months before his contract was due to expire because of the emergence of the young talent coming through.

“I think it was time… Nathan Cleary’s doing fantastic job in first grade and with Te Maire [Martin] coming back in the next month, I think it’s time for those guys to take this team into the next generation of the Panthers,” he said.

The 2010 premiership winner said he enjoyed many memorable moments throughout his two and half year stint with the Panthers, but his greatest achievement was his spectacular field goal during Penrith’s semi final win over the Roosters in 2014.

Soward thanked the Panthers’ faithful for what was a rollercoaster past few years.

“I just want to say thanks for having me and my family. It’s been a massive ride and something that I’ve enjoyed,” he said.

“The last three years has had its ups and downs but I’d like to think that I’ve connected emotionally with you guys, and I can’t thank you enough for all the support.

“You’ll always hold a special place in my heart and I’ll consider myself a Panther for life.”

Soward finished by saying that he’ll be willing to take up a coaching role with the Panthers once his time playing in England is over.

This time Hall’s double came during Penrith’s tight 34-22 win over the Bears last Saturday at North Sydney Oval.

Tyrone Peachey was a surprise late inclusion for the Panthers as was George Burgess for the Bears, who returned early from injury.

The Panthers opened the scoring through Viliame Kikau before they backed it up with a second through Peachey moments later.

Penrith continued their excellent start to the first half by laying on another two tries before the Bears bounced back for two of their own.

Penrith extended their lead after halftime to 28-16 before the Bears got within six with 15 minutes remaining.

With the Bears pushing hard to equalise, Josh Hall got the Panthers home with a spectacular 90 metre effort with four minutes to go.

Penrith will look to go back to back this Sunday when they tackle the Illawarra Cutters at Pepper Stadium from 11am.

recorded one of their biggest wins of the season, hammering the Cabramatta Two Blues 52-22 during Round 18 of the Ron Massey Cup competition.

St Marys started the game strong with a clever cross-kick from half Adrian Davis to flying Fijian winger Luke Nadurutalo to score the opening points.

Cabramatta then hit back with two tries to lead St Marys 12-4 after 20 minutes.

However Brad Drew’s men weren’t giving up without a fight, with the side laying on five tries in 18 minutes to lead Cabramatta 34-12 at half-time.

St Marys continued to put pressure on in the second half to secure a well-deserved victory.

Try scorers for St Marys included: Luke Nadurutalo (2), Ray Lesoa (2), Sam Jones, Cameron Collins, Adrian Davis, Geoff Daniela and Chris Aunese-Scanlon. Adrian Davis kicked six goals.

ometimes chance meetings can lead to the creation of something beautiful and unexpected.

This was the case for Golden Guitar winning Indigenous country music artist Warren H Williams and emerging artist Dani Young.

“It came about by accident,” Warren said of their musical collaboration.

“I heard Dani sing one night at an open mic night.

“I jokingly said ‘I think you’re singing in the wrong genre, why don’t you sing country music?’”

Inspired by one of his early collaborations with country music star John Williamson – which earned the pair an ARIA nomination – Warren decided to reach out to the young artist.

“I was trying to give someone a chance like the chance I was given by John when we first got together,” he said.

From there the former jazz singer joined together with the country music great to create the album ‘Desert Water’ which will be launched at the Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, July 22.

Though they come from different

backgrounds the pair found a kinship in the song writing process, producing an album that features the best of their combined talents.

“The songs that we wrote for the album took only a couple of weeks and we wrote all the songs together,” Warren said.

“It worked well for me and Dani, our voices complement each other extremely well.

“I had the music and the melodies in my head and she’s very good at writing words. It just came so easy.”

Warren has been surrounded by music since he was a child and his career has only blossomed as he has gotten older.

Growing up with his father, country

music singer Gus Williams, it was clear from the first time he picked up a guitar that Warren would seek out a career in the industry.

As for whether he’d like to do more musical collaborations with Dani in the future, Warren’s answer is a resounding ‘yes’.

“We found each other as a duo and I hope it continues,” he said.

t seems that Jacques Renay was destined to take on the role of Tom Jones.

Rated PG // KATE REID Take a trip behind the scenes of 1950s Hollywood in this fictional comedy from famed directors Joel and Ethan Coen.

Set after the war, Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin) is a fixer for Capitol Pictures.

He’s busy trying to help solve the issues of a group of actors and directors including a singing cowboy, a disgruntled director, a handsome dancer and a beautiful swimmer.

But his biggest problem comes when Baird Whitlock (George Clooney), the star of the studio’s new epic film ‘Hail, Caesar!’ is kidnapped.

Mannix is left with a ransom note demanding $100,000 or the star won’t live to see the day out.

Critics have praised the film with

movie review site Rotten Tomatoes describing ‘Hail, Caesar!’ as a ‘love letter to post-war Hollywood’; a perfectly cast film and complete with period detail.

The film features some of the biggest Hollywood names including George Clooney and Josh Brolin alongside Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, Tilda Swinton and Frances McDormand.

With films like ‘True Grit’, ‘No Country For Old Men’ and ‘The Big Lewbowski’ under their belt it’s no surprise that this is another hit film from the Coen brothers.

Wings of the Wild // KATE REID Aussie pop star and ‘The Voice’ coach Delta Goodrem is making it clear she’s had enough of the haters on her fifth studio album ‘Wings of the Wild’.

Devoid of the usual love songs this album is all about Delta and her experiences over the last few years.

Lead single ‘Wings’ made it to number one on the ARIA singles charts, no doubt in part because of her live performance of the track on ‘The Voice’.

The mainstream appeal is pretty clear; with heavy drums and soaring vocals it’s hard not to find enjoyment from the dance inspired track.

The rest of the album is a mix of uptempo hits alongside more poignant ballads.

There’s elements of pop, dance and r ‘n’ b, and of course there’s the piano tracks that remind audiences of the Delta they first came to love all those years ago.

Last week the album ‘Wings of the Wild’ reached number one on the ARIA charts.

Overall it’s a solid album which is sure to be a hit with Delta fans.

It’s hard to think of a recent movie that has caused quite as much controversy as the new ‘Ghostbusters’ film, which hits cinemas this week.

With some fans screaming ‘but they’re all women!’ much of the focus seems to have been on the gender of the cast

rather than the fact that this is a seriously talented group of comedy actors.

Heading up the cast are Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, who are joined by ‘Saturday Night Live’ stars Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.

When a thousand trouble-making ghouls take over the city of Manhattan, it’s up to this team of ghost-catchers to stop them.

The film also stars Aussie man of the moment Chris Hemsworth as the not-

so-bright secretary, Kevin.

‘Ghostbusters’ is directed by Paul Feig who worked with Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy on the 2011 comedy hit ‘Bridesmaids’.

Remaking a classic film is always a bit of a risk. It will be interesting to see what kind of response the film gets from fans and critics.

Ê Channel Ten has revealed the cast of ‘Australian Survivor’ ahead of its premiere later this year. A whopping 24 contestants have been announced ranging in age from 23 to 62. A private investigator, an ex-professional cricketer, a criminal lawyer, a firefighter and magician are among the contestants competing for a $500,000 prize. It will run from 1pm to 3pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Tuesday, July 19 until Wednesday, September 14.

The classes will be led by Anthony Brown from Ruby Productions with primary school aged children invited to attend.

It will run from 4.30pm to 5.30pm each Sunday afternoon.

A free lifestyle program for children aged between seven and 13 will be held at Jamisontown Public School from next Thursday, July 21.

Every Thursday during Term 3, Go4Fun will be held at the school.

A 10-week healthy lifestyle program, qualified health professionals will be running the two-hour long sessions aimed at improving the health of children through the development of healthy lifestyle behaviours, as well as educating children about food and exercise.

Children will learn about food serving sizes, menu planning, their goals and rewards, role modelling, problem solving, and will also play some fun fitness games with movement skills and team building.

The program will run from 4pm to 6pm at Jamisontown Public School. The school’s located at 1A Thurwood Avenue, Jamisontown.

Toenails grow slowly so it can take up to a year for complete clear nail regrowth to occur.

The earlier treatment takes place, the faster improvements are seen. In a nail that is infected 30 per cent or less,

treatment of topical antifungals are used. Often change is evident after 2-3 months of daily applications. The best starting point for antifungal therapy is tea tree oil, a very simple and inexpensive antifungal option used both for its antifungal and preventative capabilities. When tea tree oil just isn’t aggressive enough, we will advise Canesten, Loceryl or Rejuvenail, which holds an approximate effectiveness rate of 30 per cent overall.

Laser treatment With topical success rates generally low, overcoming fungal nails can be a long, frustrating process. Lunular laser uses a cold laser beam to gain a 90 per cent fungal nail clearance rate. Using cold laser technology means the therapy is painless with no side effects, offering no risk of tissue damage or burning that hot laser therapy can cause. Secondly, it avoids liver toxicity risks that oral antifungal tablets may cause, by using low-level laser to stimulate both your immune system and blood flow enabling clear nail regrowth changes that are generally evident at eight weeks.

The result is that we often hear of huge numbers of women and young girls dissatisfied and depressed about life. Why? Because of the way they look! They’re not pretty enough. They’re not thin enough. Looks ARE everything!

As pet care becomes more advanced, it is becoming increasingly common to give unwell pets blood transfusions. Blood transfusions may be needed for many reasons and often animals that receive blood transfusions are saved!

Why is blood given?

There are many reasons why ill animals need blood transfusions – the most common being trauma, autoimmune disease, snake bites or blood loss. Blood contains many different components and can be life saving. Blood not only contains red blood

cells which carry oxygen, but also carries platelets which are vital for clotting.

Blood also contains clotting factors and protein and can be beneficial in animals with severe infections and clotting problems.

Are there blood types in animals?

Yes! Some animals are easier to give blood transfusions to than others. Both dogs

and cats have different blood types but interestingly, dogs can receive blood from any other dog as long as it is their first transfusion. After the first transfusion, dogs need to be blood typed to avoid reactions. Just like humans, some dogs are universal donors whose blood can be given to any other dog. Cats are a bit more complex and always need to be blood typed to avoid reactions. We have even previously performed blood transfusions on very sick ferrets!

Where do we get the blood from?

Obtaining blood can be difficult as we need donor animals. We will often use large breed, young and healthy animals as donors.

The procedure is very simple and only takes 5-10 minutes. The donor animal is then placed on a drip and given a large meal to restore their energy levels. There is even a blood bank based in Melbourne where we can purchase blood products for animals.

Blood transfusions are a gift for animals as they are usually life saving and immediately make a very sick animal feel better.

They are not possible without donor animals and we are very grateful for our donors!

this is not a true grain but because it has a similar nutrient composition and is used in the same way as grains, it often gets included in the same family.

Quinoa has become a bit of a ‘foodie’ obsession partly because of its superior nutrient profile. It’s high in protein and unlike other plant-based foods it includes all the essential amino acids.

Quinoa is also a good source of fibre, B vitamins and iron and is gluten free.

It can be used in sweet and savoury dishes, and makes a perfect addition to meals in place of rice or pasta.

Freekeh While not as well known as quinoa, freekeh is slowly gaining popularity and when you look at the nutrients it contains it’s not hard to see why.

Freekeh is made from durum wheat that’s roasted when it’s still green. As with quinoa, freekeh is a nutritional powerhouse; it’s high in protein, fibre, iron, zinc and magnesium.

This ancient grain has a nutty flavour, is popular in middle eastern cuisine and can be used in both salads and hot meals such as soups and casseroles.

While these wholegrains may seem intimidating at first they are just as easy to prepare as rice or pasta and can help add extra nutrients to your meals.

exus has maintained its recordbreaking sales success by achieving its strongest ever first-half result, surpassing the previous best in 2015.

Lexus Australia Chief Executive Peter McGregor said the milestone underlined the consistent growth of the Japanese luxury marque in the local market.

“Our brand achieved 25 per cent yearto-date growth this time last year, so to record further growth in light of that is a significant achievement,” he said.

“It is a very clear indication that our dynamic product is hitting its mark in the competitive Australian luxury market with excellent support from our dealer network.”

Lexus model lines recorded strong results in the first half of 2016.

NX turbo sales were up nearly 58 per cent on 2015, while sales of the CT 200h premium hybrid hatchback were up nearly 20 per cent.

Sales of RX 350, the six-cylinder petrol variant of Lexus’ luxury midsize SUV, also increased by more than 23 per cent on the 2015 figure.

Mr McGregor said the results set down the foundation for the second half of the year ahead of 2017 when Lexus introduces further new product to the market including the LC luxury flagship coupe.

“We are in a buoyant position as the new financial year commences,” he said.

he Penrith Rams are aiming for 10 straight wins this Saturday afternoon – a feat the local AFL club hasn’t achieved in decades.

First grade coach Kevin Kirk is enjoying a stunning debut season as head coach of the Rams, with his AFL Sydney Division 2 side the talk of the competition.

After scraping into the finals in 2015, the Rams have gone from strength to strength under coach Kirk despite losing 12 players from last year’s squad.

“It’s been really good, the boys have come together quicker than we thought they would,” Kirk told the Weekender.

“They are a formidable unit when they get going and everyone is contributing something at the moment.”

Penrith haven’t just been winning games by a measly few points this season – they’ve been laying down the law to their opposition with an average winning margin of a whopping 55 points. Last weekend the Rams belted Sydney University 126-18 for their ninth win in a row.

Kirk credited his whole side for stepping up right across the park.

“Our defence has been strong, our midfield has been strong and our forwards have been productive by kicking goals and scoring,” he said.

“Our club currently has two of the top three scorers in the competition.

“Phillip Aumann is leading the competition with 48 goals and Mitchell Stevens has 36 goals in third spot.”

Penrith only won six games on their way to a finals appearance last season, with the former lower grades coach implementing a number of new coaching strategies to propel his team to the top of the competition this year.

“We play a different style than we did last year as far as structurally, and our expectations of our players are fairly well spelled out,” he said.

“We are quietly confident we can give things a good shake in the finals if we continue to play the way we are.”

With five rounds to go, Kirk is hopeful his dream debut season can continue into the run home.

“I’ve been a bit lucky, it’s a good group and for my first year in first grade I’m grateful to be honest,” he said.

Penrith will battle the Manly Warringah Giants this Saturday at Weldon Oval.

Cricket success honoured at Council Civic Reception

he Penrith District Netball Association fielded four teams at last week’s 2016 Netball NSW State Age Championships, all returning with encouraging results.

Penrith’s U12 Championship side finished third overall with 14 wins, while their U15 and U13 Championship teams took home seventh in their respective age groups.

The local association also fielded a team in the U14 Championship who finished 11th against some of the best young netball talent in the state.

More than 3300 athletes took to the courts to contest over 5400 matches across the three days, with more than 83,000 goals scored under bright blue skies.

Campbelltown District (Championship Division), Bankstown City (Division 2) and Illawarra District Netball Associations (Division 3 and 4) co-hosted this year’s event, which attracted thousands of visitors from all across the state.

Netball NSW Competitions Manager Claire Dale congratulated everyone involved in this year’s tournament.

t may be the middle of winter but that hasn’t stopped Penrith Council from throwing a Civic Reception for the victorious Penrith Cricket Club, who won the 2015/16 Sydney Grade Club Championship in March.

Players, coaches and cricket officials joined Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown and a number of Councillors and dignitaries last Thursday night to celebrate the incredible sporting achievement.

Penrith took out the prestigious Sydney Smith Cup after a strong season in seven divisions of the Sydney Grade Cricket competition.

“I want to officially congratulate the club on a stellar 2015/16 season,” Cr McKeown said.

“Your win of the Club Championship shows the great depth of talent in the club and reflects the dedication of the volunteers who make it all possible.”

Sydney Cricket Association Deputy Chairman, Craig Hambleton, echoed Cr McKeown’s sentiments.

“There are 20 premier clubs in Sydney, so a win is quite an achievement,” Mr Hambleton said.

“Points allocated for a Club Championship are across seven grades, so it really is a reflection of the performance across all teams in the club and not just First and Second Grade.”

Wrestling Emma wrestles her way to the top in sport of hits and bruises NATHAN TAYLOR

mma Douglas grew up with her family in Penrith as a fun loving kid who enjoyed playing hockey at school and watching wrestling on television. But while most kids leave their interest for wrestling in the living room, Douglas dreamed of one day making that passion a reality.

Now 19, Douglas is living out her dream and travelling around the country performing as her alter ego, the feisty ‘Erika Reid’.

“When I was younger I watched a lot of wrestling and fell in love it. I always wanted to do it and when I turned 18 I started training, and now I’m performing in shows,” Douglas told the Weekender.

Douglas will be competing as Erika Reid at the upcoming Blue Mountains Pro Wrestling event to be held at the Blackheath Community Centre on July 31.

Douglas said it’s been a tough ride to get to where she is now but has loved every minute of the ‘rough and tumble’.

“I knew it was always going to be hard, it wasn’t going to be easy to get into, but I don’t regret it at all,” she said.

“The most enjoyable part of wrestling is having a character and doing really cool

moves and surprising people. I’m not very big and people think I’m not capable of much but when I prove them wrong, it’s a lot of fun.”

While Douglas is only a newcomer to the theatrical sport, she’s still getting used to the big crowds and pesky injuries.

“It’s very nerve-racking but it’s so much fun working in front of so many people,” she said.

“I get a few bumps, bruises and mat burns but that’s pretty much it. I like getting thrown around... it’s a lot of fun.”

When Douglas performs in the Blue Mountains later this month, it’ll be the first time she has performed so close to home. She said a lot of her close friends and family think her choice of career is “very cool”.

“My best friend came to a show last week for the first time and it was a hardcore match which involved a lot of blood.

My friend was almost gagging but she was cool about it and really supportive,” she said.

“My little brother too, he’s five, and I show him my wrestling videos and he loses his mind – it’s so funny.”

RUGBY: The Penrith Emus have put in a spirited performance against Southern Districts but ultimately went down 64-13 in Round 17 of the Shute Shield competition.

This Saturday afternoon the Emus will try for one last time to get an elusive victory when they return home to take on West Harbour in the final round of the season.

The Ramettes will hit the road this Saturday morning to take on the Manly Warringah Giants.

FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers maintained their position at the top of the NPL2 ladder when they defeated Macarthur Rams 4-0.

The dominant victory was set-up in the first half when a double to Jordan Morfitis as well as strikes to Cameron Devlin and Kyle Cimenti meant the second half was simply a formality.

nspirational Penrith rower Erik Horrie will leave the waters of the Nepean for Rio this September after he was officially named on the 2016 Australian Paralympic Team.

It will be the second Paralympic Games for 36-year-old Horrie, who won a silver medal in the arms and shoulders single scull class at the London Games in 2012.

Horrie, a three-time world champion, said being selected for his second Paralympics is pushing him to train harder to turn his silver into gold.

“To be able to say I’m a two-time Paralympian when I return is unbelievable. To be able to even try on the green and gold gives you that sensation to perform better,” he said.

“I think the experience from London of being so close but so far away from that number one spot, and coming home with silver has driven aspects of my training into reality.”

Horrie got involved in Para-sport at the age of 21 following a horrific car accident that left him with paraplegia. Having first made a name for himself as part of the Australian wheelchair basketball team, Horrie made the transition to rowing in 2011.
