T

he Federal Government’s JobKeeper program has been extended until March next year as Prime Minister Scott Morrison declared he’s got “Australia’s back” in dealing with COVID-19.

The payment will be reduced to $1,200 per fortnight from October and then to $1,000 per fortnight from January. A new rate for parttime workers will also be introduced.

Businesses will need to re- qualify for the payment to ensure their turnover remains significantly down.

“There is no silver bullet and this is about

delivering the support Australians need and the policies our economy requires to reopen, recover and create jobs,” Mr Morrison said.

Income support for those on JobSeeker will also be extended, with a new reduced supplement of $250 per fortnight until the end of the year. It means those on JobSeeker will receive around $800 per fortnight in total.

“The Government’s focus remains on reopening the economy where it is safe to do so, but the extension of these measures recognises that some parts of the economy will continue to be affected and need continued support,” Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said.

More cash flows for river River delight: Another boost for “jewel in the crown” as more funding is secured ALENA HIGGINS

P

enrith’s “jewel in the crown” has received another significant boost, with $10 million being allocated to open space embellishments along the Nepean River.

Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said the funding would see further investment in the bridge-to-bridge precinct around the river.

“This funding is part of a $150 million public open spaces fund that was a 2019 election commitment,” he said.

“It’s a great outcome that Penrith has been prioritised for investment and I’m pleased to see my advocacy for our community succeed.”

He also hopes a portion of the money will go towards restoring the old Policeman’s Cottage.

“I would like to see some of the funding allocated towards the rejuvenation of the Policeman’s Cottage at the end of the Yandhai-Nepean Crossing,” he said.

“With the new Log Cabin coming, Emu Hall operational and the Regatta Park expansion being designed, the Policeman’s Cottage is a missing piece in the puzzle.”

Last month, Penrith Councillors heard the river precinct had secured well over $34 million in funding since the Our River Masterplan was endorsed.

Councillor Mark Davies, who spearheaded the Masterplan to attract more funding when he became Mayor in 2012, was thrilled.

“$34 million since 2012, since we put that plan in place is just a phenomenal outcome so far in eight years,” he said during last month’s Ordinary Council meeting.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what’s happening on the western side and now what’s happening on the eastern side.”

That follows the opening of the $49 million Yandhai - Nepean Crossing in October 2018, the $6.7 million boat ramp late last year and the establishment of the waterfront restaurant hub The East Bank in early 2019.

Contaminated land in St Clair and St Marys set to be remediated by experts ALENA HIGGINS

C

ontaminated land in St Clair and St Marys is set to be remediated after asbestos was discovered.

Penrith Council recently awarded a half a million dollar contract for the remediation of land between Luke’s Lane, Saunders Park and Cook and Banks Fields, St Clair.

It will also fork out $197,721.65 excluding GST to have a strategic parcel of land at 11- 13 Chesham Street, St Marys treated with a view to selling the site.

Council staff become aware of asbestos within the Luke’s Lane, Saunders Park and Cook and Banks Fields area in 2019 and took immediate action to ensure the site was safe.

Asbestos contractors were engaged to remove all ground surface asbestos material and air monitoring was undertaken, concluding there was no risk of airborne asbestos to the community.

Council’s Director of City Services Brian Steffen ensured Councillors that residents have been kept protected since then. “As soon as the asbestos was discovered there it was taped off, no access and a low geo-fabric layer was put over the site,� he said during last month’s Ordinary Council meeting.

“It has been fenced off until we could design the remediation plan and go out to tender. “We did do letter box drops to the residents in the area and signage along the fences so people knew what was happening there.�

Mr Steffen wasn’t entirely sure if fibros cement sheeting was to blame, however suggested it was likely. “What we have found when this has happened [is that] it has been old fibro, sometimes it’s soil containment in the soil as well as fibro, but when they are buried like this it is usually fibro,� he said.

In answer to a question raised by Councillor Greg Davies wondering if some of the problem had “escaped� the nearby former Telstra building, Mr Steffen said there was unfortunately no way to know. “But at the time it would have been remediated at whatever standards were at the time,� he said, though Cr Davies expressed his doubts about this.

Meanwhile, Council has given the go ahead for land assembly and de-constraining activities to be undertaken at 11-13 Chesham Street in preparation for site divestment.

In 2017, Council identified the site as an “underutilised land asset with development potential�.

Time to stop silly blame game I t would seem it’s human nature to want to find someone to blame when things go wrong.

It was the referee’s fault your team lost on the weekend. Your boss was the problem at work, not you. The other bloke started the fight.

In politics, the blame game is intensified – it’s the other side’s fault, no matter what.

NSW Labor is certainly playing by that rule book at the moment, ramping up its finger- pointing at NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and the State Government over the current handling of Coronavirus in the State.

The media releases and press conferences just keeping rolling in.

On Tuesday, it was Shadow Health Minister Ryan Park angry about “COVID confusion on lockdown, masks and household gatherings”.

On Monday, Labor “demanded” more pop- up testing on the South Coast, presumably after checking on the logistics and staff levels involved.

On Sunday the demand was for the NSW Government to update the public on the steps it is taking to prepare for a second wave.

On Friday Labor “slammed” the plan to close COVID-19 testing clinics in South West Sydney.

Same day, different topic: This time Labor questioning whether the Berejiklian Government would enforce the safety measures implemented for hotels.

Last Thursday the lightning bulb moment of the day was a booking app for COVID- 19 pop- up clinics. Again, we presume they checked the logistics and costs surrounding this.

Last Wednesday, Labor declared the government had “dropped the ball” on compliance and enforcement.

I could keep going back. It’s been relentless, and non-stop.

But is it fair or is it just a really low level of political game-playing?

Overall, I think the Berejiklian Government has done and continues to do a terrific job in its handling of a health crisis nobody saw coming.

There have been moments deserving of criticism, particularly surrounding the Ruby Princess debacle. Heads may ultimately role on that one.

But to counter that debacle there are countless examples of the excellent work being done by NSW Health and the Government, whether it’s the amazing efforts of contact tracers, the initial lockdown that tackled the virus’ first wave or the support given to businesses across the State.

It would appear the Government and NSW Health is putting every possible resource into fighting COVID- 19 and balancing the livelihoods of individuals and businesses moving forward.

Gladys Berejiklian has fronted the media almost every day, but on the rare occasions she doesn’t it typically garners a nasty poke from the opposition.

It’s just tacky and unwarranted.

I like Jodi McKay. I think she’s a strong Opposition Leader and is far from a stop gap – she could well lead the State one day.

But somewhere along the line she’s getting some terrible advice about the PR front that Labor is trying to mount.

The daily whinge just looks desperate and unhelpful.

Has Gladys Berejiklian and NSW Health handled the COVID- 19 response perfectly? Of course not. No government would. Much of this is about lesson learning and preparation, the latter of which has been done extensively in NSW particularly around the beefing up of ICU bed availability in our hospitals.

Back in March and April we were “all in this together”.

In July, it’s all about the blame game.

Same thing is happening down in Melbourne, where Daniel Andrews has become public enemy number one.

Again, mistakes were most likely made but rather than finger- point, let’s try to find the most appropriate response and do it united, not separated.

NSW Labor can keep its relentless tirade up as much as it likes, but it’s not winning anyone over. If nothing else, it’s reminding us of what may have avoided at last year’s State Election.

CROWDS BACK AT THE FOOTY It had been some 128 days since Panthers Stadium had hosted an NRL game, and last Sunday’s homecoming match couldn’t have produced a better result for Penrith fans.

The Panthers moved to the top of the NRL ladder with a 22- 10 win over the North Queensland Cowboys.

Just 2,891 fans were in attendance at the game, with crowd capping and strict social distancing rules in place due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Every second row of the grandstands was unavailable to fans while the usually bustling hills were only sparsely populated.

It was the first time fans had attended a game at Panthers Stadium since the round one defeat of the Roosters on March 14.

Crowds were stopped from attending games in the days that followed that match, with the NRL competition eventually suspended entirely.

Since the resumption of the NRL on May 28, the Panthers have played home games behind closed doors at Campbelltown Stadium and Kogarah Oval.

Penrith has four more matches scheduled at Panthers Stadium this year, with the next game against Canberra on Saturday, August 8.

Ready to help in a crisis New vehicles provide massive boost to local State Emergency Service volunteers NICOLA BARTON

T

he NSW SES Penrith Unit has received four new vehicles to assist in their preparedness when protecting the community.

The vehicles were delivered as part of the State Government’s $56.4 million fleet replacement program and are fitted with the latest communications and rescue equipment.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott and Penrith MP Stuart Ayres met with volunteers last Friday to officially hand over the vehicles.

Mr Elliott said having up-to-date equipment is critical.

“This is part of the program to replace vehicles in various SES units and Penrith, because it is a very busy and active unit, was very much a priority of mine to make sure that their vehicles were replaced,” he said.

“If they are volunteering their time then we as a government should be giving them the quality assets that they deserve.”

The four vehicles cost just shy of $300,000.

Mr Elliott said the vehicles and storm trucks are “next generation and will bring the SES up to the next step”.

“The weather patterns at the moment mean they need to be much more prepared for a variety of responses and emergencies,” he said.

NSW SES Deputy Zone Commander Metro Allison Flaxman said the vehicles will be a huge help when responding to storm events in coming months and into the future.

“These will replace really old vehicles and that gives us the ability to support and respond to the community needs in a safer way,” she said.

The Penrith Unit has 130 volunteers with 70 more in the pipeline, waiting to join.

Mr Ayres said Penrith was a priority for the funding due to the high risk flood zones in the region.

“I think it’s important that we constantly upgrade the quality of equipment that our volunteers and SES are using,” he said.

“We’re in one of the highest risk flood zones anywhere in the country, a very unusual topography, flash flooding, storm damage and the river flooding into lowlands is always a risk that these guys have to be prepared for.

“What we’ve learnt through bushfires and recent storm seasons is being able to deploy quality equipment really enhances the volunteers’ ability to protect and help people in a time of crisis.”

estern Sydney Airport (WSA) has appointed former Qantas International Chief Executive Officer and Lendlease Chief Financial Officer Simon Hickey as its new CEO. Mr Hickey has over 30 years of experience working in the commercial, infrastructure and aviation industries and will now take over the reins from former CEO Graham Millett.

WSA chair Paul O’Sullivan said Mr Hickey was the right man to lead the organisation through the airport’s construction and into operation in the years to come.

“Western Sydney Airport has a very positive profile in local and overseas aviation markets, which led to a very high level of interest in the CEO role from candidates across the world,” he said.

“It’s a great outcome that we found the best person to lead one of the nation’s most significant infrastructure projects here in Australia.”

Mr Hickey said taking the reins of WSA as the project enters a critical stage of delivery will be a challenging and rewarding experience.

“Western Sydney International will mean that for the first time in Sydney, airlines and passengers will have a choice about which airport they want to use,” he said.

Westfield Penrith Centre Manager Katie Smith encouraged shoppers to download the app to experience the benefits.

“So that our customers can access parking as quickly and easily as possible when

they visit us, we will reinstate controlled parking from July 22 along with the launch of our brand new membership program, Westfield Plus, offering exclusive member benefits including extended free parking,” she said.

“By signing up to the Westfield Plus app customers will receive four hours free parking, while non-Westfield Plus customers will receive two hours free parking.

“Other member benefits available through the Westfield Plus app include free parking when you enter after 6pm, the ability to check your parking time and set a reminder, book tables at some of your favourite restaurants and explore your local centre map and store directories.”

ew changes to Westfield Penrith parking will limit shoppers to two hours free parking and remove free parking after 6pm, unless shoppers download the centre’s new app.

Westfield’s paid parking has resumed after being offered free to shoppers during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now, the traditional free three hours has been reduced to two, unless shoppers download the free Westfield Plus app.

When downloaded, shoppers will need to enter their vehicle registration to receive four hours of free parking.

Free parking after 6pm will also now only apply to app holders.

But with not everyone having access to a smartphone, locals are concerned two hours won’t be enough time, especially for the elderly.

Emu Plains resident Caitlin Wilson was outraged at the news.

“I think they need to keep it at three hours free parking,” the local shopper said.

“By all means, give an extra hour or two to people with the app but two hours is not enough time to do your shopping, especially if you are disabled or elderly.

new drive-through COVID-19 testing clinic has opened in Penrith as testing numbers continue to surge across the local area.

The new clinic is at the Sydney International Regatta Centre and is set to ease pressure on the very busy testing clinic at the Penrith Paceway.

The Regatta Centre and Penrith Paceway drive-through clinics are both open seven days a week from 9am to 4pm.

A Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD) spokesperson said the drive-through clinics aim to test more people at a quicker rate without them leaving their car. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We know winter in Penrith is very cold and often wet and windy, so having our patients stay warm and dry in their cars means itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s much more comfortable and safer for them,â&#x20AC;? the spokesperson said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At busy times there may be a wait, but please be patient as our staff work hard to make sure everyone is seen as quickly as possible.â&#x20AC;?

More than 1500 children have been born at Nepean Hospital since crisis started

T

hey are the generation that will always be remembered for being born during a time when the world was flipped upside down.

From March to July 2020, 1517 babies have been born at Nepean Hospital.

Any parent who knows the stress of bringing a new life into the world can only imagine the added anxiety of delivering during a pandemic.

For Llandilo couple Amanda and David Zahra, this was their reality.

“It was the craziest experience, I was crying most nights,” Ms Zahra told the Weekender.

“There was a lot of talk on social media and just so much uncertainty, so I was doing a lot of Googling but I just had to stop.

“The pregnancy and the birth was taken away from me a little bit, I just wanted to keep my baby safe but my main fear was having to deliver the baby by myself without my husband there.”

Ms Zahra isolated herself for the last three months of her pregnancy before giving birth on June 25.

“During April I needed an iron transfusion and had to go into the hospital right

in the scariest part of the pandemic. I did not leave my room, it was a bit of a worry, it was making me sick,” she said.

Soon after panic buying followed, making it difficult to prepare essential items for birth.

“I never breastfed my other kids, I was so scared because the formula was selling out, I didn’t want to take it off the shelves but I did have to find a few cans to make sure I had something,” Ms Zahra said.

Thankfully, the week her daughter Selena was born some restrictions were lifted, allowing two support persons to be in her room when she went into labour.

“By just a few days I was able to have my mum and husband. I was worried because my mother had been there for the birth of my two other children, so that meant a lot,” she said.

Her other children were only permitted a half hour visit accompanied by their father.

Since then Ms Zahra has had to make tough decisions about visitations from friends and family.

She said she plans to write down the whole experience to one day explain to Selena the crazy and chaotic year that brought her into the world.

Some parents say no to TikTok While Amanda Rogers thinks personal information could be shared from any app, the South Penrith mother of five does not allow her younger children to have TikTok. Ms Rogers said her main concern for her three kids who are all under 10 is the content they could come across, so they don’t have any access to social media.

“My eldest is 17 and uses it so I know you can load videos with a privacy setting as I also worry about who could be watching my children but there is no way to restrict what my kids are viewing,” Ms Rogers said.

“People can record videos that have inappropriate language or content, and this is public, which I can’t control, and my kids can be exposed to that.”

Parking shame A survey of almost 1,500 people has found almost one- in- five parents who have children aged zero to seven admitted to using ‘parents with prams’ parking spots when their child was no longer in a pram or not with them.

The NRMA data showed that while almost two - thirds (63 per cent) believed that parents shouldn’t park in parents with prams spots when their child was no longer in a pram, 16 per cent did it anyway.

NRMA Road Safety Expert Dimitra Vlahomitros said parents with prams parking spots in shopping centres were useful because they were located closer to easily accessible entrances to help parents safely move children through high traffic areas into lifts or travelators.

“Going to the shops with young kids can be a stressful experience. Parents with pram parking spots can be a game changer,” Ms Vlahomitros said.

“Parents with prams parking means parents don’t have to drive around looking for a parking spot and they are usually wider so children can be up loaded in and out of the car comfortably.

“Children are more at risk of being involved in a crash due to their unpredictability around cars and they can also be hard for other drivers to see so ensuring convenient parking close to entrances is available for parents with young children is really important.”

Man charged

An Erskine Park man has been charged with firearms offences following investigations into the fatal shooting of a man at Wentworthville last month.

The victim died on Monday, June 29 after being shot in the leg at a home on Jones Street in Wentworthville.

Police allege a man entered the home and shot the 44-year-old before fleeing.

A 28-year- old man was arrested and charged with murder and remains before the courts.

On Tuesday, the 46-year- old Erskine Park man attended Penrith Police Station and was charged.

Police allege the man owned the firearm used in the fatal shooting.

ideo sharing app TikTok may be under the microscope over privacy concerns, but these Penrith kids have no intention to stop using the hugely popular platform.

Some countries have even moved to ban TikTok, but for local users of the app, privacy seems the least of their worries.

15 - year - old Brock Valesini creates videos on the platform and said that the entertainment outweighs the potential problems.

“I know so many teenagers, including myself that aren’t worried as plenty of other social media apps like Facebook use our information without us knowing,” Brock said.

“It is tailored to suit my humour and preferences so genuinely keeps me entertained, there are so many amazing creators and it gives those interested in making videos an opportunity to be noticed.”

Glenmore Park mum, Renee Culgan also allows her nine- year- old daughter Brock Valesini loves creating content on TikTok. Addison to use the app, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance.

“She likes to talk to her friends at school about the dances and trends, but she can’t listen to anything with swear words, only films around us and tells us if she feels anything is suspicious,” Ms Culgan said.

“She has a private account, and we don’t keep any sensitive data on the devices she uses it on, so I am not worried about any breaches.”

Sisters Natasha and Sophie Morgan said they would be upset if Australia followed places like the United States, which is trying to ban TikTok over national security concerns.

“It would be such a shame because it is a place where we can get away from the worries of the world and have a laugh,” Sophie said.

“It can help depression and anxiety as we are happy and active from learning the dances.”

TikTok Australia General Manager, Lee Hunter said user privacy is assured.

“TikTok does not share information of our users in Australia with any foreign government, including the Chinese Government, and would not do so if asked,” Mr Hunter said.

“We focus on providing an experience that is safe as well as fun, we already have multiple safety measures in place for consumers and are continuing to invest in making it even safer.”

Man avoids jail after threats to burn down mother’s house

A Penrith man who threatened to burn down his mother’s house before holding a steak knife to her throat has escaped full-time jail.

The man faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with multiple counts of ‘stalk and intimidate’ and two counts of ‘armed with intent to commit an indictable offence’.

The court heard the man was living with his mother after his relationship with his ex broke down earlier this year, which also involved him making threats to brutally harm her and their kids.

On May 15, the man became violent when he couldn’t find his mobile phone charger.

When his mother left to report the matter to police, the man hatched a plan to burn down the house.

He told his cousin: “If the police show up at the door, I’m going to put the gas on, put a candle on the dining table, that way when she opens the front door when she comes in the whole house is going to blow up and she’s going to have nothing,” agreed facts show.

When his mother returned home and began doing the dishes, the man turned the gas onto full and began waving a cigarette lighter over the top of the stove.

He then opened the top drawer, grabbed a steak knife and held it to her neck, screaming “I’m going to kill you”.

When the police arrived and asked if he knew why they were there, he said “because mum whinged about me, because she yells at me and I give it back to her”.

Magistrate Jennifer Giles was gobsmacked.

“I’m actually speechless about this matter I must say,” she said, before composing herself and going on to blast the offender.

She said the only thing going for him was that he pleaded guilty at the first available opportunity and he had a limited record.

The court heard the man had a “horrific upbringing” at the hands of a physically abusive father.

He was sentenced to a 20-month Intensive Correction Order – commonly referred to as a community-based jail sentence.

He must continue with his mental health plan and was warned any fresh offending would trigger a full-time jail sentence.

He is also subject to an AVO for the protection of his mother, ex partner and two children.

The man cannot be named for legal reasons.

Man confined to house after touching girl in fruit shop

A man who allegedly stalked a girl around a shopping mall before touching her in a fruit shop has been bailed to a St Clair address.

Hassan Ahmad Alrefai faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday following the incident which allegedly occurred in Newcastle last week.

Magistrate Jennifer Giles described it as a “shocking, shocking allegation”, adding it was a damning case that was all captured on CCTV. The court heard the accused followed the 11-year-old around the shopping centre before touching her.

He was later confronted at his vehicle by the girl’s mother, resulting in his subsequent arrest.

Magistrate Giles said “problematically”, all young people were at risk if he was granted bail.

However, she took into account his clean criminal record before placing him on strict house arrest.

Alrefai, a tiler, must live at his employer’s St Clair home and not leave the premises unless in the immediate company of his boss.

“You’re going to lead a very quite life,” Magistrate Giles quipped.

His matter was adjourned to August 24.

“Jealousy-fuelled attack” at Penrith Train Station

An offender who laid into a man he knew was making advances on his ex partner has been slapped with a good behaviour bond and community service work.

Penrith Local Court heard Andrew Glen Sutcliffe set upon the man when he spotted him at Penrith Train Station on March 11.

His lawyer said it was a “spontaneous and jealousy-fuelled attack”.

“He wasn’t waiting for the victim, it wasn’t pre-meditated,” he said.

The court heard Sutcliffe started attacking the man, punching him and kicking him before following him and setting upon him again until a passerby stepped in.

Magistrate Jennifer Giles downright refused to let the first-time offender off scot-free, saying he needed to be punished properly and the offending denounced.

She handed him a 12-month Community Correction Order with supervision.

“And you’re going to do 75 hours of socially useful, unpaid work in the community,” she concluded.

Man had taken drugs before crashing into parked car

A man with drugs in his system who slammed into a parked car has been stripped of his licence for six months.

Penrith Local Court heard Inderjit Singh had taken Xanax and cannabis in the days and weeks before the accident.

Magistrate Jennifer Giles warned him if he was going to dabble in illegal drugs, he needed to keep out of the driver’s seat.

He was convicted and fined $800.

Prison time the only option for man who keeps driving

A banned driver who continues to succumb to temptation has landed himself behind bars.

Jason Piripono Meinata, 36 appeared be-

fore Penrith Local Court via video link last Friday after pleading guilty to his fourth, fifth and sixth driving while disqualified or suspended charge.

His lawyer said his client offered no real excuse and simply kept getting behind the wheel because he thinks he isn’t going to get caught.

The court heard Meinata, who was on an Intensive Correction Order (ICO) for driving while banned at the time, had never held a full licence and had an “extreme history” for driving offences, including alcohol and drug driving.

Given his “wilful disobedience” and the fact his previous ICO was revoked, Magistrate Brian van Zuylen determined there was no other alternative than fulltime jail.

He was handed an aggregate sentence of seven months with a three-month nonparole period and was disqualified for a further 12 months.

He is eligible for release on September 3.

Man had been drinking before assaulting mother at home

A Cambridge Park man who blamed alcohol for assaulting his 67-year-old mother has been handed a good behaviour bond with supervision.

The man fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with ‘common assault’ after he threw his mother on a couch following a verbal argument.

His lawyer told the court the man had a long history of mental health issues, but said it was alcohol rather than a mental episode that landed him in strife this time.

The court heard the man began consuming alcohol at 11am and became erratic and began yelling and screaming.

When his mother knocked on his door to see if he was OK, he lashed out.

As part of his 12-month bond, he must participate and comply with supervision and abstain from alcohol and drugs.

He is also subject to a two-year AVO for the protection of his mother.

A toilet paper thief has been charged after he was caught stealing supplies from a public toilet at Kingswood Railway Station.

About 10.25am on Friday, July 17 a 44-year-old Doonside man attended the station and entered a toilet block.

It is alleged the man forced open a toilet roll holder and removed a large roll, placing it in his backpack.

A short time later Police were patrolling the railway station and sighted the man who was smoking.

He was stopped and spoken to.

Checks were made which revealed the man was wanted on another matter and he was subsequently arrested.

During a search of his bag police discovered the toilet paper.

Inquiries with railway staff revealed that the toilet paper was stolen.

The toilet roll was returned and the man was charged with ‘larceny’.

Cranebrook: Drugs found after search of illegal business

SPECIALISING IN

Police conducted a search warrant on an unregistered business in Cranebrook, which led to the discovery of illegal activity.

On Friday, July 17 police executed the search warrant at a residential address on Dolomite Road as a result of a joint operation involving police, Transport for NSW and Fair Trading NSW. The investigation related to the occupants operating an unlicensed motor vehicle recycle business without a licence.

The joint operation identified evidence for the sale and distribution of motor vehicle parts.

As a result the 23-year-old man was issued infringements from Fair Trading NSW. During the search, police also located 75 grams of cannabis leaf.

The man is set to appear in Penrith Local Court at a later date for ‘possess prohibited drug’.

St Marys: Smoking woman found with knives

A woman has been charged after she was found in possession of multiple knives and drugs.

About 4.45pm on Saturday, July 18 police were travelling on a train from Mount Druitt to St Marys.

Whilst stopped at Mount Druitt, police sighted a woman smoking on the platform before boarding the train.

Police approached and had a conversation with the 24-year-old Fairfield woman.

Once the train stopped at St Marys the woman was removed and searched.

Police located a black folding knife measuring about 11cm in her pocket as well as a 15cm multi tool with a knife blade and a tomahawk multi tool with a folding blade, measuring at 22cm.

Police also located a clear resealable plastic bag containing cannabis inside her makeup bag.

The woman was charged with ‘custody of a knife in a public place’ and three counts of ‘possess prohibited drug’, to appear at Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, August 11.

Penrith: Man without license caught behind the wheel

A man has been charged after being caught driving without a licence for the second time, and will front court next month.

About 8.45am on Wednesday, July 15 police were at a petrol station on Henry Street, Penrith when a Holden Commodore entered.

At this time, the driver, a 19-year-old Luddenham man exited from the driver’s seat.

Checks on the man revealed that he did not hold a current driver’s license.

He was arrested and charged with ‘never licensed person drive vehicle on road – prior offence’.

He is to appear at Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, August 25.

JobKeeper gets extended While not strictly legal news, Australians have welcomed reports that the Federal Government’s JobKeeper scheme is set to continue until at least March 2021.

Businesses who can demonstrate a minimum 30 per cent decline in revenue when compared to a similar period last year are currently entitled to nominate their employees for the JobKeeper program resulting in a payment from the Federal Government to each eligible employee of $750 per week allowing business owners to keep staff employed throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Treasury report has determined that the JobKeeper program has achieved its role of keeping Australians in work and limiting job losses, despite an ever increasing unemployment rate.

Specific details of the extended JobKeeper program were revealed this week. The current scheme will continue until the end of September and then an amended scheme will take its place that will result in a still generous but reduced rate of pay for JobKeeper recipients as well as tighter eligibility criteria.

The Federal Government acknowledged when it introduced the JobKeeper program that it was taking a one size fits all approach as a means to get

money into the economy quickly and save as many jobs as possible.

The broad stroke approach of the first tranche of the scheme has resulted in some casual or part time workers receiving greater income than they had pre-JobKeeper, a loophole that the Government is determined to close as it refines the JobKeeper scheme and transitions businesses away from relying on the Federal Government help to pay wages.

While the JobKeeper program and other Federal and State Government stimulus has been absolutely critical in ensuring hundreds of thousands of businesses are able to survive during the pandemic, it is widely accepted that indefinite ongoing support of this nature is not sustainable.

After all, any stimulus package the Government pays comes from tax payer’s money.

Where under the initial scheme businesses only had to qualify once to receive JobKeeper payments for the duration of the scheme, businesses will now have to requalify based on their income over the June and September quarters.

According to the ATO more than 960,000 organisations have received payments for approximately 3.5 million employees.

he $613 million Nepean Business Park project has progressed to its next stage, as amendments to zoning and the Penrith Lakes State Environment Planning Policy (SEPP) are fast-tracked for approval.

The park, set to be located on the 47-hectare former quarry adjacent to the Penrith Lakes Scheme, is projected to create a combined 18,450 direct and indirect jobs.

The Penrith Lakes Development Corporation sold the land to the business behind the project, Precinct Capital, for $19.25 million.

Precinct Capital Project Director Dylan Baudinet said the business park is now one step closer to realising its projected 18,000-plus direct and indirect jobs, and the injection of hundreds of millions of dollars into the western Sydney economy.

“Approved amendments to the Penrith Lakes State Environment Planning Policy give the go ahead to use the land for a business park which includes a vital link to the Great River Walk – an environmentally-friendly initiative we will contribute to the community,” he said.

“There is no doubt that the public benefit will be enormous, which includes the benefits to the local economy and employment,” he said.

According to an independent economic analysis the Nepean Business Park will generate $1.95 billion in economic activity during construction and provide $500 million gross value annually for the Penrith economy.

Its completion is estimated to deliver $295 million in wages annually.

Mr Ayres said the amended SEPP was about providing certainty and support for businesses during the current pandemic and into the future.

“The proposed Nepean Business Park will be a great asset for Penrith and western Sydney residents, with the potential to create more than 18,000 new jobs and inject nearly $2 billion into the economy, while providing great public space for the community to enjoy,” he said.

Further approvals are still required for subdivision infrastructure as well as for building applications.

he NSW Government is extending COVID-19 restrictions introduced to pubs to now include restaurants, cafes and clubs as health officials desperately try to contain recent Coronavirus outbreaks.

From today (July 24), people will have to follow new rules around these ‘higher risk’ activities.

Group bookings will be limited to a maximum of 10 people while venues must register their mandatory COVID safety plans with the government.

Paper sign- in is allowed but a digital record of patrons’ details must be created within 24 hours.

Meantime, venues are only allowed a maximum of 300 people or one customer per four square metres, depending on which is lesser.

The Weekender conducted a snap survey of COVID safe plans at restaurants, cafes, pubs and clubs around the Penrith Local Government Area (LGA) last weekend and found that 94 per cent of businesses were complying with a sign-in procedure of some sort.

When it came to supplying hand sanitiser, social distancing signage or measures and regular cleaning, 88 per cent were showing compliance.

A spokesperson from the NSW Police Force said local police officers were taking a proactive approach to ensure

local businesses comply with the restrictions.

“In addition to regular business inspections by our licensing police, we’ve tasked officers to conduct patrols at restaurant precincts and licensed premises,” the spokesperson said.

“We would like to remind the community to be vigilant so if you see something that concerns you, raise it with staff at the venue in the first instance.”

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the tightening of restrictions was to ensure NSW stays “open for business” and avoids a new lockdown.

“Unfortunately we must live with COVID-19 and the way it has changed our lives,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“These rules will give businesses and the community a degree of certainty into the foreseeable future, and help NSW avoid uncontrolled virus spread.”

Health Minister Brad Hazzard said the changes are based on health advice provided by the Chief Health Officer.

“We do not want to see community transmission getting to a stage where it is out of control. These restrictions target large gatherings which are high risk settings for transmission of the virus,” Mr Hazzard said.

“We need people to do the right thing: follow the rules; stay home if unwell and get tested, even with the most minimal of symptoms; always maintain physical distancing when out and about; and ensure good hand hygiene.”

he Federal Governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new $2 billion JobTrainer skills package is yet another puzzle piece in the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new $1 billion JobTrainer program will provide 340,700 places from September for free or low cost vocational training courses available for graduating students and those who have found themselves without work as a result of the pandemic.

The Federal Government will provide $500 million, with matched contributions from state and territory governments.

The other half of the package will go towards extending wage subsidies for currently employed apprentices and trainees.

Emmaus Catholic College Principal Robert Nastasi said the announcement of the JobTrainer program came as a huge relief to many of the year 12 students at the school. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot of anxiety amongst them already, so essentially it is a bit of security to break that anxiety to know that there is a pathway for them,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We get a lot of students with early entry

to university but this is like an early entry for trades and nursing for those who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to go to university.â&#x20AC;?

Vice Captain and Colyton resident Chantelle Gordon was recently named a finalist in the schools category of the 2020 NSW Training Awards.

She is a huge advocate for VET subjects in schools and said the scheme alleviates the pressure on students after a stressful final year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have a lot of support from our teachers and from our families and friends; everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really feeling for us,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think this JobTrainer scheme just really shows that the government cares about us and that people are thinking of us.â&#x20AC;?

The student, who attends the McCarthy Campus in Emu Plains, is now in the running for the State Finals in October.

Jessica, who is completing a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education, won the School Based Apprentice/Trainee award for her exceptional commitment to formal studies at school and during work placement.

Kingswood residents say their suburb is being “exploited” for financial gain ALENA HIGGINS

ingswood residents are still pleading with Penrith Council and the State Government to save their suburb from boarding house developers, as clusters of the buildings continue to form and more family homes are snaffled up.

Long- term locals Lyndy Rastall, Vince Montgomery and Wendy Spinks say the suburb continues to be exploited for financial gain with little thought for the character or amenity of the area.

“As much as we want to have faith in our Council, it’s damn hard,” Ms Rastall said of the ongoing saga.

“It’s very disheartening, I’ve got to tell you, it really is.”

A letter from Council to then Planning Minister Anthony Roberts in February 2019, outlining Council’s concerns about the “proliferation of boarding houses” and urging him to reconsider the Affordable Rental Housing SEPP provisions, shows there were 32 existing and planned boarding houses in the Penrith Local Government Area, 24 of which were located in Kingswood.

Council said it has been working proactively to improve amenity impacts and build form outcomes for boarding houses, including implementing a number of development controls in 2018 as well as

new amendments that are due to go before Council soon for adoption.

State Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said Council needs to widen its net when it comes to community consultation, ensuring Local Planning Panels (LPPs) are able to access “cumulative impacts” of developments in particular areas.

“Developments with 10 or more objections are automatically referred to a LPP,” he said.

“Therefore it’s critical that Council notify a wider area of the community about proposed boarding house developments, rather than just the adjoining properties.”

Mr Ayres held firm on the State Government’s decision to strip Councillors of their powers to determine development applications.

“LPPs exist so councils can’t move the goal posts to suit a political or personal agenda and are a critical part of our anticorruption framework in NSW,” he said.

However, Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler firmly disagrees, saying the issue could be better addressed if the State Government handed planning powers back to Councillors, the community’s elected representatives.

Locals find creative ways to give ‘rubbish’ new life during COVID-19 pandemic NICOLA BARTON

T

hey say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure and for these creative locals that is certainly true.

With people suddenly without work or spending a lot more time at home during the pandemic, many opted for an early spring clean, lining the streets with piles of unwanted goods for Council clean-ups.

Between March and July, Penrith City Council completed almost 34,000 bulky waste collections, a marked increase from the same period last year.

Many savvy and creative minds see great opportunity in these piles of ‘junk’, giving items a new life and most importantly, saving it from a landfill fate.

64- year- old Emu Heights resident Vicki Hayden is a re-purposing hobbyist, giving unwanted items destined for the tip, a new artistic flare.

Ms Hayden specialises in making beautiful vintage coffee tables out of old electrical cable drums, utilising other materials she finds whilst foraging Council cleanups in the local area.

“You don’t need to go to the tip today, you just need to go to the local area and there’s plenty of trash which can certainly be made into treasure,” she said.

Owner of Tracy Kelly Jewellery Design, Tracy Kelly, on top of her stunning handmade engagement and wedding rings, offers a unique repurposed range as part of her broader jewellery collection.

She uses old CDs, records, brass serving plates or just about anything she can get her hands on and incorporates them into quirky earring designs.

Ms Kelly said Penrith is a sourcing ground for such items.

“I’ve been experimenting with some old buttons for earrings which were really popular,” she said.

“Now pretty much everything I see I try to convert into earrings and it’s great for the environment as well.”

Ms Kelly has recently been using a jewellers saw to hand cut old CDs to turn into fun earring designs.

Studio upgrade The St Marys Arts and Craft Studio will undergo a major refurbishment to the tune of $250,000.

Works will include replacement of air conditioning units and all windows, demolition and installation of new partition walls and doors plus refurbishment of ceilings and floors.

In addition, the existing toilets will be renovated and connected to rainwater, new joinery and shelving will be installed, damaged footpaths around the building will be repaired and the centre will be painted throughout.

All services, including fire, security and lighting will also be reinstated.

Penrith Council awarded the contract to Riverstone- based Rogers Construction Group for $254,224.90 excluding GST. Council allocated funding for the refurbishment of the centre, located on the corner of Mamre Road and the Great Western Highway, from its 2019-20 Asset Renewal Program.

The sale includes the Tattersalls Hotel itself as well as 6400 square metres of commercial space.

n organ donor saved the life of 12- year- old Glenmore Park local Kyla Devine, and now her family is encouraging others to consider organ donation as part of DonateLife Week.

Kyla’s mother, Katelan Devine, said it was an emotional rollercoaster when Kyla needed a liver transplant at just four-months-old due to a life-threatening condition.

“Her bile ducts weren’t working so it was pooling in her blood and liver which, if it sits there for long enough, it just chews away at your insides like chemicals would,” she explained.

“She was put at a critical stage on the list straight away and was lucky enough to only have to wait nine hours for a transplant as the next available one wasn’t for months which would have been too late.”

Now in Year 7 at Penola Catholic College at Emu Plains, Ms Devine said Kyla is now healthy and eternally grateful for her donor.

“She still has some transplant maintenance, but she is now just like any kid who loves being active and we are just so lucky to have her here with us,” she said.

THOUSANDS RAISED BUSINESSES NOW BEING JUDGED Judging of this year’s Penrith City Local Business Awards finalists is underway.

“Our anonymous judges are now visiting the businesses that have made it through as finalists,” Awards founder Steve Loe said.

“That means any unfamiliar face that walks through the door could be there to assess their performance.”

Mr Loe said tallying the thousands of nominations and determining the finalists was always a huge task.

“Now the hard work of our judges is underway,” he said.

SCHOOL PROJECT PROVIDES HOPE What began as a desire to help local families fleeing domestic and family violence has led to Project Hope, a community wide initiative to help domestic violence victims set up their new homes.

Project Hope began at Glenmore Park Public School when a local family was forced to flee their home right before the COVID-19 restrictions tightened. Within days, Principal of Glenmore Park Public School Natalie Mansour and Learning and Support Teacher Natalie Watson rallied and completely furnished this family’s new home.

As word spread of the new initiative, they were inundated with new furniture from busi nesses, interior designers and display homes to donate to survivors of domestic and family violence.

As Project Hope quickly expanded, two shipping containers were quickly filled and the items were donated to families in need. Together with the Haven, Penrith Women’s Health Centre and Westcare, Project Hope has been able to help five families in the community set up new homes in just a few short months.

TOP SENIORS Cranebrook resident Amanda Coleman lost much of her long hair to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation, which helps Aussie families beat blood cancer. The community came together to donate, raising $4,181 as a part of her World’s Greatest Shave campaign.

Panthers are the surprise packets of 2020

f you had have told me at the start of the season that Penrith would be sitting on top of the ladder at the halfway point of the competition, I would have had you arrested for stupidity.

Yet here they are, eight wins, one draw and only one solitary loss. No one is getting ahead of themselves and there’s still plenty of improvement left in the team but then you don’t want to peak too early. After all the Grand Final is played in October not July.

Impressive victories over the Roosters, Storm and Wests Tigers are undoubtedly the highlights while the emergence of youngsters Stephen Crichton and Matt Burton show that the Panthers have a lot to look forward to for years to come.

The signing of Api Koroisau, while being the key to much of the side’s success, shouldn’t overshadow the ‘on - field’ maturing of halfback Nathan Cleary.

Cleary was told at the start of pre-season, that this was his side to run and he has done a remarkable job of it so far.

The next big test for the Panthers is to go on with it. With injuries starting to bite and fatigue about to set in, there’s still a lot of boxes the team has to tick before the big end of season games start in 10 weeks’ time.

Something tells me, they might just make it to the ‘big dance’ after all.

I felt sorry for Broncos coach Anthony Seibold last Thursday. It just hasn’t worked out for him and he looked so despondent as he addressed the media after Brisbane’s seventh loss in eight games.

We talk about looking after the mental health of players, I just hope somebody is looking after Seibold’s health as well.

What game I’m looking forward to...

The Eels v Tigers is definitely the match of the round. Parramatta will be looking to bounce back after a poor showing against Manly while the Tigers will want to beat a real contender to show that they’re a real contender.

The final word...

I really hope Trent Barrett knows what he’s doing accepting a three-year deal to coach the Bulldogs from 2021.

As a Panthers supporter I can be accused of being salty but I can promise you that’s not the case. The Dogs, at the moment, are a basketcase OFF the paddock more than they are on it.

I hope it works out for him because I have a feeling he won’t be welcomed back a third time by the Panthers if it doesn’t.

A

fter 10 rounds of the 2019 season, the Penrith Panthers sat in last spot on the NRL ladder with only two wins to their name. A season on, Ivan Cleary’s side has climbed the summit and now sits atop the competition at its half-way point – a remarkable transformation.

Last Sunday’s win over the Cowboys at Panthers Stadium was far from perfect – in fact it was probably the worst performance in this stretch of five straight wins – but it was enough to catapult Penrith to a deserved first place on the ladder.

The Panthers face a new challenge this weekend when they travel outside of Sydney for the first time this season, boarding a plane for the Gold Coast on Sunday morning to take on the Titans at Cbus Super Stadium.

And they’ll do it without a host of stars after Dylan Edwards, Api Koroisau and

While the 42-6 scoreline would suggest otherwise, the Titans weren’t totally disgraced against premiership powerhouse Melbourne last Friday night and can’t be brushed aside as easybeats, especially with those key outs for Penrith.

Mid-way through the first half the Titans were going set for set with Melbourne, the scores locked at 6- all and a much tighter contest than anticipated was emerging.

In the end, the experience and ability of the Storm took over and the Titans simply couldn’t keep up, ultimately surrendering to lose by a big scoreline.

Difficult as it would seem, Justin Holbrook would have found plenty of positives out of that game and should feel confident of in the very least a competitive showing on Sunday.

The key to Penrith winning this one is

patience. The Storm produced a perfect example of this last week – they didn’t panic when the scoreboard wasn’t ticking over as quickly as expected, they stayed the course and eventually got the job done.

A lack of patience actually threatened the Panthers against North Queensland on Sunday. There were times when they became frustrated when things didn’t quite go their way, and signs of the ‘old Panthers’ started to show. Fortunately they found the toughness required to get home and win, but it’s something Cleary will have surely worked on this week.

The Titans will eventually make the errors and miss the tackles that give their opposition a chance – that’s just where they sit in the NRL landscape at the moment – but they can also pile on the points if given the chance, and Penrith can’t take the match lightly.

PANTHERS

I’m again expecting Penrith’s forwards to lead the way. James Fisher-Harris was immense last week, running for some 250 metres and making almost 60 tackles. If he produces another performance like that the Titans’ forward pack may just offer to surrender at some point during the 80 minutes.

I’m also really liking what we’re seeing out of Tyrone May at the moment. After more than a year out of the game he has every reason to be in his shell, but he’s been very involved when he’s out on the field and his passing game is catching the eye. He’s a superb option off the bench and coach Cleary will surely continue with that model for as long as he can.

In the end I expect the Panthers to beat the Titans on Sunday – Cleary’s men simply have too much skill across the park to drop this one.

Tip: Panthers by 14.

KENNY GETS CHANCE AGAINST TITANS NATHAN TAYLOR

anthers hooker Mitch Kenny will be rewarded for his patience this weekend when he fills the big boots left behind by fellow dummy half Api Koroisau.

The 22- year- old local junior will make his long-awaited return to first grade this Sunday afternoon against the Gold Coast Titans after Koroisau was ruled out earlier this week with an elbow injury.

Despite not playing in the NRL since Penrith’s Round 4 thrashing of the Warriors, Kenny has remained fit and motivated while waiting for his number to be called.

“We’ve got a pretty good system here where the boys who aren’t playing each week play in simulated games at training against our top team and then on weekends – when we haven’t been able to organise in- house scrimmages – we’re making sure to stay as fit and prepared as we can,” Kenny told Extra Time.

With the Panthers flying high on top of the table for the first time in 17 years, Kenny said he and some of his teammates can’t help but feel a little envious that they haven’t been a part of many of Penrith’s

“I think it’s only human that we are a little bit jealous. We all want to be out there and celebrating the wins and be part of the team that’s doing so well at the

moment,” he said.

“But, I think more importantly, it’s about the success of the club and anything we can do to make sure that top 17 is firing and putting the scores on the board.”

For Kenny, his six-week wait for a game of footy will finally end on Sunday afternoon when he travels by private jet to the Gold Coast to face the lowly Titans. While the Windsor Wolves junior is excited to be back playing again, he is somewhat apprehensive about replacing one of the ‘Buys of the Year’.

“I’ll be honest there’s a little bit of nerves, Api’s in red-hot form and is such an important part of the team both on and off the field,” Kenny said.

“But I’m not going to go out there and be Api on Sunday, I’m just going to be myself and do the role the best I can for the team.

“I’m sure if everyone’s doing their job around me, there’s no reason I can’t contribute towards getting us another win.”

Depending on the severity of Koroisau’s injury, Kenny is praying this Sunday’s game won’t be the last you see of him this season. He’s hoping a strong performance against the Titans will earn him a regular role in the side moving forward.

“You never know how those things are going to take shape in terms of the balance of the team, but I’ll put my best foot forward and, if there’s an opportunity up for grabs, I will take it with both hands,” he said.

Journalist Matt Encarnacion is one of the rare Penrith supporters in the media, so we were all sad to hear he’d been made redundant from his job at AAP. Sunday’s game at Panthers Stadium was his final time covering a Penrith match. As a regular at Panthers games and media opportunities for the last five years, the club wanted to acknowledge his contribution.

The boys got a jersey signed and Nathan Cleary presented it to him after the game.

A wonderful touch.

Bulldogs have the money to climb out of the dire situation and the likely wooden spoon season 2020 will deliver. He also knows Ivan Cleary is safe as houses at Penrith, which means he’ll have to leave to pursue a head coaching role. And then there’s the money – I’m hearing the deal could be worth four to five times what he’s currently taking home at Penrith.

Would those in the Penrith fan base being so critical of Barrett really reject such an opportunity themselves?

Another journalist sent the photo to the NRL, which took extreme precautions by asking Encarnacion to get tested. The test was negative.

We’re wondering if Brent Read from The Australian was also sent for a COVID test this week. The photograph on the right shows he may have gotten a little too close to Cowboys coach Paul Green on Sunday at Panthers Stadium. Green has since moved on from the Cowboys, but was very much in the ‘bubble’ at the time the photo was taken.

The ‘Matt Burton to the Bulldogs’ story is so easy to write and speculate about, but I’m not convinced it’s got legs. The Panthers have no appetite to let Burton go, especially to the Bulldogs given assistant coach Trent Barrett seems certain to sign a deal to coach the club.

Any suggestion that Barrett is actively working to convince Burton to leave is ridiculous, especially given the way Barrett’s previous departure from Penrith unfolded. That’s not to say Burton won’t leave at some stage if he can’t find a permanent spot in first grade. With Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai locked into the halves and Tyrone May the obvious cover for any injury or suspension, nobody would deny Burton the opportunity to find a starting spot at an NRL club should things not unfold in his favour at Penrith.

But I’m told the club is keen to ensure Burton remains on its books for 2021.

fter 10 rounds we are at the halfway point of the strangest NRL season we’ve experienced since the Super League war, so it’s an ideal time to hand out the inaugural Western Weekender Half-Time Awards.

Innovation of the Year – The ‘Six Again’ rule. Who would’ve thought a simple change that was introduced with no debate would be the most significant thing to happen to rugby league in years.

The rule has doubled the game’s entertainment value, we see a fast, free flowing game, the wrestle is no longer an issue and attacking football is encouraged. While awarding ‘six again’ appears to be inconsistent, it doesn’t seem to matter, captains have no time to question the referee so we just get on with the game.

Buy of the Year – There’s a reason the Panthers sit on top of the ladder and his name is Api Koroisau. There were some doubts over Penrith’s roster when James Maloney left, sure they have the best young talent, but did they have a conductor to bring it all together? Well that conductor has been Nathan Cleary.

He’s now realising his potential and he’s doing that because of his little mate in the number 9. Honourable mention to Kyle Flanagan. Big job to step into the shoes of Cooper Cronk and he’s done it with no fuss and easily leads the top point scoring table.

Peter V’landys is Clinton Maynard’s Man of the Season.

Dan Andrews Award for Best Practice in Administration – This one’s easy, Paul White and the Board of the Brisbane Broncos. Three clubs have managed to

sack their coaches already and Brisbane isn’t one of them. Why did the Broncos give a coach who’d been in charge of an NRL side for just one season a five- year

contract? Anthony Seibold is one lucky man. Honourable mention to Cronulla’s management for allowing local junior Kyle Flanagan to leave with a year to go on his contract Egg on Face Award – Myself. In last week’s column I predicted Canberra wouldn’t make the semis because Josh Hodgson is out for the season. Of course they went on to beat the Sydney Roosters in the Grand Final replay.

Scandal of the Year – Bronson Xerri fails steroid test. While this case is continuing, given the Sharks have heard nothing from Xerri’s camp since the B sample was tested is a concern. How a young talent, destined to play Origin football could potentially destroy his career given all the education they are given about drugs is beyond belief.

Man of the Season – Peter V’landys.

Needs no explanation. He is the man who has saved the game. Given the COVID-19 pandemic could you imagine the state of ‘Rugba League’ if the previous management was still in charge? An absolute revelation.

John Hopoate Award for Scandals – While there have been a couple of nominations, overall players have been very well behaved this year and it probably comes down to the fact the night clubs have been shut, so for now we’ll withhold the award until the end of the season.

That has happened despite football department spending being heavily criticised amid the COVID chaos.

So how can the system help? What could Peter V’landys and the Commission do?

What if no coach could be sacked until the final year of his contract? An improvement perhaps. The long-term deals might disappear.

What if every dollar in a coaching payout had to be matched by a club donation to a junior fighting fund? Imagine club Boards discussing a $1.2m payout knowing a ‘tax’ of $1.2m would then be owed to the commission for distribution where needed.

Any ideas? Anything to stop so much money feeding the mouth of one when it could help hundreds or thousands.

hate seeing coaches sacked for a multitude of reasons and one of them really grates in the current environment. Payouts!

The amounts can be hundreds of thousands of dollars. Sometimes millions!

Often more money is then spent ‘upgrading’ to a different leader. It’s not unusual for the sacked coach to fall on his feet at another club before he’s even scratched the surface of his payout. And on it goes.

Dollar after dollar.

You CAN’T argue with the men involved being paid the money legally owed to them, especially when their treatment is reactionary, callous or short sighted.

You CAN argue with a system that allows clubs to waste so much on so few.

The world is dealing with a financially devastating COVID- 19 pandemic. This week there were stories that a quarter of grassroots sports clubs could disappear.

Ask any country rugby league club to open their books and you’ll see more red than black. How must they feel when Club A pays coach B the rest of the alphabet! Imagine how many clubs that one payout could help.

Like Paul Green, I was naïve to think coaches would be given more latitude because of Coronavirus. At one stage I thought there would be a moratorium on coach sackings. I must have been sick. So far we’ve seen Green, Stephen Kearney

Finding a true Ninja Warrior

he ‘Australian Ninja Warrior’ phenomenon is back with a bang for its fourth season. 140 supremely fit athletes tackle the world’s toughest obstacle course in the new series of the spectacular blockbuster.

Host Ben Fordham is joined by Rebecca Maddern, Freddie Flintoff and new addition Shane Crawford to take viewers through every triumph and fail on the wild ‘Ninja Warrior’ ride.

Ben said this year the whole competition has been taken up a notch.

“This really is the best year as the ninjas are fitter, faster and fiercer than ever and for the first time a new element has been added of Ninjas competitors’ side by side, which makes the intensity go up a gear,” he told the Weekender.

“There is $400,000 prize money for whoever can complete the new Power Tower and then conquer Mt Midoriyama then we also have a State of Origin special, which is state versus state, mate versus mate, which could win them $100,000.’’

With half a million dollars up for grabs, Ben said you will see some fresh but also some familiar faces trying to see if they

have what it takes to win the hugely popular contest.

“They have all been training hard, some are mums, dads, tradies, students, we even have a five-time Ironman and a girl who quit the circus to become a Ninja Warrior,” he said.

“We also have some returning favourites including Olympic gymnast Olivia Vivian, last year’s winner Charlie Robbins, Ben Polson and Australia’s speediest Ninja, Ashlin ‘Flashin’ Herbert.”

Shane Crawford has also been added to the commentary team, which Ben was very excited about.

“Shane was fantastic, when Rebecca had to go for a COVID-19 test we needed

a co-host at short notice and he happened to walk past the room, so we grabbed him,” he said.

“It turned out he watched the show and knew a lot so he was great at sliding in and, when she came back, we weren’t ready to say goodbye, so we kept him.”

With Penrith home to its very own ninja adventure park, Ben said he hopes locals are tuning in.

“Tru Ninja in Penrith is fantastic and has brought us a lot of new fans, so we hope all the warriors there are watching this year,” he said.

‘Australian Ninja Warrior’ returns this Sunday, July 26 at 7pm on Channel Nine and 9NOW.

Group exercise programs are a good option for this.

There are also other things you can do aside from exercise to negate your falls risk.

Key to this is to improve safety around the home and wear well-fitting footwear.

Another good option should you have a fall is to wear a safety alarm so that if you are unable to get up you can still seek help.

At OnePointHealth, we run a group balance and strengthening class based around falls prevention. It aims to assist in preventing falls and falls-related harm by improving balance, strength and cardiovascular fitness.

The class runs two times per week and is led by a combination of a physiotherapist and an exercise physiologist or podiatrist.

t is estimated that one- third of people aged 65 and over fall one or more times per year. This often leads to fractures, commonly at the hip or wrist, joint dislocations, head injuries and abrasions.

Women are more likely to have a fall compared to men, and are also more likely to be admitted to hospital as a result of a fall.

Why so many investors have an unfair opinion of Superannuation

I

’ve lost count of how many times I’ve had a client tell me they don’t believe in Superannuation or Superannuation is too risky along with numerous other misgivings surrounding investing in Superannuation. These comments come from the association of the assets that the Superannuation is invested rather than Superannuation itself.

I feel the mistrust comes from two main sources, the early Superannuation products were often restrictive and heavy on fees, and the vast majority of Superannuation funds invest primarily in shares and are often more aggressive than the risk profile of the investor.

The early Super funds were very rudimentary, often distributed by salesmen who were remunerated handsomely for signing up new clients. Some had restrictive terms, some had large exit fees and others were both a combination of insurance and investment. The end result was many people felt disillusioned by the whole experience.

This is no longer the case, most modern Super funds are efficient investment vehi-

cles and in most cases fairly cost effective in comparison to other investments. The advice costs in the new funds have been separated from the product cost itself with commissions replaced by advice fees that are negotiated between advisor and client.

The second issue is related to the underlying investments. Traditionally most Super funds have a large exposure to the share market, which is substantially more volatile than defensive assets and in downturns clients have seen their investments fall. This has caused problems in two areas, for many clients they are too conservative (in investment terms) to be invested as aggressively as the traditional Super fund and should have had a more defensive portfolio all along. The other issue is that although many investors if properly informed about the nature of their investment would be much more comfortable with the risk, many Super investors don’t receive advice in relation to Super benefits and are flying blind, this leads to anxiety as they are not sure what to expect.

On a ‘balanced fund’ investment (the most common investment selection Super), ASIC gives investment guideline of an average return of 7.5 per cent with a 78 per cent chance of a positive return in

any given year, this means that more than one in five years will be negative, and this is expected. Many clients if aware of this would be much less concerned when the inevitable negative year came around.

If this is too risky still, almost every fund offers more conservative investment options, it is now possible to invest in cash, term deposits as well as defensive portfolios. The reverse is true, many clients would like to be more aggressive and take on more risk in order to have potential higher gains in the long term.

It is possible to invest in just about all the same things you can outside of Super, but inside of Super.

The advantage of investing inside Super is that gains are taxed concessionally and once in pension phase are tax free. Superannuation should be viewed as a tax structure not an investment.

Superannuation is an outstanding tool to build wealth for retirement and if you are one that has mistrusted Super previously, maybe it is worth reviewing.

M

ost infected wounds and abscesses in cats are caused by bites sustained during cat fights. They are more common in male cats than females and most common in undesexed males.

Cats are very territorial and will fight with other cats to protect their territory.

Desexed male cats defend a small area around their home, but undesexed males will try to continually expand their territory.

When a cat bites, it leaves small punctures in the skin which rapidly seal over trapping bacteria from the cat’s mouth under the skin of the victim. Often, no sign of the bite can be seen initially. As bacteria under the skin multiply, and tissues surrounding the bite wounds become infected, pain and swelling occurs. After a few days, an abscess (a pocket of pus) may develop. With severe abscesses, the skin is lifted off the underlying tissues, causing loss of blood supply and necrosis (death) of areas of skin. These areas of skin come off, leaving large open wounds. Sometimes an

abscess will rupture, but then reform, if there is not good drainage.

Occasionally, the bite penetrates a joint or bony area, causing septic arthritis (infected joint) or osteomyelitis (bone infection). Pain is the most obvious sign that a cat has an abscess developing.

Often cats will not allow their owners to touch them at the bite site. The area may be swollen. The cat may become listless, have a fever and become inappetant.

If a bite wound is treated early, before it develops into an abscess, antibiotics alone will often be all that is required.

Once an abscess forms, antibiotics will not be able to penetrate the pus, and surgical draining of the abscess under general anaesthesia will be required.

Generally, abscesses will heal quickly after treatment, although if large areas of skin have been lost, it may take longer.

The main ways of preventing cat fights are by desexing cats and keeping cats confined, especially at night, when most fights occur. If you know that your cat has been in a fight, it is best to have it seen by the vet ASAP.

WS Giants skipper Stephen Coniglio believes a win tonight over 2019 Premiers, Richmond, could be the kickstart his side so desperately need.

After playing in last year’s Grand Final against tonight’s opponents, the Giants are a shadow of their former selves and are slipping down the AFL ladder fast.

Currently sitting in 13th place after seven games, the Giants’ latest defeat came at the hands of Brisbane 88-68.

The club’s 3-4 record is officially their worst start to a season since 2014.

Coniglio, who didn’t play in last year’s decider due to injury, said he’s unsure how each of his teammates will approach tonight’s all- important rematch at Giants Stadium.

“We love playing the best sides and Richmond, clearly, over the last three years have been the best side,” he said.

“We’ve had some really good encounters with them over the years but I think the fact that it’s not a Round 1 or Round 2 game probably takes the [spice of the] Grand Final rematch away from that.

“We just want to get the win against them on Friday night and get back to our winning ways.”

Coniglio pinpointed a number of

St Marys teenager is riding to more success NATHAN TAYLOR

iding a bike is an activity most kids growing up partake in. While most children ride to the shops or cycle with their friends, Daniel Samuel took his passion for two wheels to another level.

The St Marys resident has been racing in BMX for the past 10 years and track cycling for the last two.

During that time the now 17- year- old – who also goes by the race name “Diesel” – has gone from strength to strength and is now the latest recipient of the Penrith Valley Sports Foundation Senior Sports Star Award.

In 2018, Daniel attended the BMX National Titles and placed seventh in 15/16 Boys for 24-inch and eighth in the 15 Boys for 20-inch.

At the BMX ACT State Titles, he placed third in the 15 Boys for 20-inch and second in the 15/16 Boys for 24-inch.

Daniel also attended the Victoria State Titles where he placed second in the 15/16 Boys for 24-inch and third in the 15 Boys for 20-inch.

In 2019, competing in BMX, Daniel participated in the BMX NSW State Titles and placed fifth in the 15/16 Boys

He then went on to compete at the BMX National Titles and finished 10th in the 16 Boys for 20-inch and 16th in the 15/16 Boys for the 24- inch, due to a crash he had in the semi-final.

In cycling, Daniel finished 13th out of 103 riders at the National Junior Track Series.

He also placed third overall at the Omnium Championships and second overall at the Metro State Championships.

Daniel was selected in the NSW State Team and finished second in the Bowral Final Wheel Race and second in the Goulburn Final Wheel Race. He also came third in the Golden Wheel Race at Wagga Wagga.

Earlier this year, whilst competing in track cycling, Daniel placed third in the Sprint and Keirin events at the NSW State Championships. His times for both races were deemed personal bests.

As a result, Daniel was selected in the 2020 NSW Cycling Team to compete in March’s National Championships, however the event was postponed due to the health pandemic.

ne of Penrith Cricket Club’s longest serving players has been named 2019/20 Male Player of the Year for just the second time in his nearly three-decade career.

Grade cricket veteran Daniel Dent won the coveted award last week after receiving the most votes per round during the 2019/20 Cricket NSW Premier Cricket season. Dent, who is a Life Member at Penrith, also claimed the Outstanding AllRounder Award.

Penrith Cricket Club’s Annual Presentation was vastly different this year, with the club announcing all of this year’s award winners via their Facebook page due to the current health pandemic.

Dubbo native Henry Railz was crowned Limited Overs Player of the Year, while Luke Hodges and Tyran Liddiard were named joint winners of the T20 Player of the Year.

Liddiard also took home Wicketkeeper of the Year for most dismissals, Liam Doddrell was named Bowler of the Year with 38 wickets at 17.45, Ryan Gibson was

awarded Batsman of the Year with 982 runs at 49.10, and Jordan Browne won Fielder of the Year.

Penrith’s female cricketers were also rewarded for their incredible efforts last summer, with NSW Breakers star Naomi Stalenberg crowned 2019/20 Female Player of the Year for the first time since 2015.

The 26- year- old, who is also a valued member of the Sydney Thunder Women’s Big Bash team, unsurprisingly won Batter of the Year also with 469 runs to her name.

Other winners included Emma Hughes for Bowler of the Year, Alana Ryan for Wicketkeeper of the Year, and Sam Arnold for Fielder of the Year.

Young gun Callee Black took out Brewer Shield Player of the Year, while Madison Spence received the Commonwealth Bank Country Player Scholarship.

Along with Dent and Stalenberg, longtime scorer Lorraine Morris was another of the major winners for the 2019/20 season after she was named Club Person of the Year for her significant contributions to the Penrith club, particularly in an off-field capacity.

The Emus played one trial match during the pre-season, a 45-7 defeat at the hands of Newcastle.

Muggleton said his side took plenty of important lessons out of the game but he jokingly wished he could have his former Parramatta Eels teammate Steve Ella – who was famous for his pace and anticipation skills – in the team.

“Our centres made four clear breaks in the first half against Newcastle but didn’t score a try off it,” he said.

“I’ve told the boys we’ve got to expect the break rather than react to the break. If I could get Steve Ella out of retirement it’d be tremendous.”

estern Sydney’s push for a coveted spot in the A- League Finals begins on Monday night when they travel up the M1 to face the last-placed Mariners.

While the Wanderers have plenty to play for during the A-League restart, the bottom-placed Central Coast have nothing but pride in the jersey.

Speaking with the Weekender, Wanderers star Keanu Baccus said he can understand if Monday’s opponents aren’t as motivated as his team are.

“I think sometimes you lose motivation and we’ve probably been there before and so have other teams, but they are also tough teams to play because they have nothing to lose,” the 22- year- old said.

“Games like this can go either way but you have to be ready for it and we will be come Monday night.”

The Wanderers haven’t played a game since way back on March 21 when they drew with first-placed Sydney FC. Before the A- League went on a four- month

“We need to bring that good form back as soon as we can,” he said.

“We are all buzzing to be back playing and the quick turnaround between matches will be good for us because we want to play so badly.

“It’ll be less training and more games, which for me, as a player, I love the sound of.”

When the Wanderers do hit the pitch on Monday, things will look a little different.

Not only will there be less spectators watching on in the stands, but there will also be a couple of rule changes implemented with the controversial VAR (Video Assistant Referee) axed and the introduction of five substitutes per game.

Baccus said he’s supportive of both changes, which were made in line with the COVID-safe protocols.

“It’s going to be a bit different to finish the season like that but I’ve played without VAR before, so I guess it’ll be back to that norm,” he said.

“The five subs is a good idea because it will help us towards the back- end of games.”

The defensive mid- fielder also threw his support behind Jean-Paul de Marigny, who was confirmed as Wanderers head coach until the end of the 2020/21 season.

Around the grounds BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers have defeated the Newcastle Hunters in a nail-biter 93-89 in Round 2 of Waratah 1 Youth Men competition. Kevin Achampong top-scored for the Panthers with 12 points, in what was the first game for both sides since the Coronavirus hiatus. This weekend the second-placed Panthers will play in their first double header of the season, taking on the Sydney Comets on Saturday evening at Comets Stadium before battling the Bankstown Bruins on Sunday afternoon at Blaxland High School Sports Stadium.

AFL: The Penrith Rams have won their first game of the season, smashing Balmain 71-46 in Round 1 of the AFL Sydney Platinum Division competition.

Veteran Phil Aumann top-scored for the Rams booting three goals, while Jayden Stevens kicked two. The Rams will aim for back to back wins this Saturday when they take on defending Premiers Southern Power at Heathcote.

split into two conferences – Conference A and Conference B. Conferences were determined by the finishing position of the Opens team in 2019. All teams will play each team in their allocated conference twice, while all teams will play each team in the other conference once. Games will be played at Netball Central, Sydney Olympic Park.

NETBALL: The 2020 Super Netball season has received an enormous boost with the Queensland Government throwing its support behind the league which is set to start on August 1. The commitment will see the majority of matches, including the entire Finals Series, played across Nissan Arena in Brisbane, the University of the Sunshine Coast Stadium and regional Queensland. The revised model will see all non-Queensland Super Netball teams, including Giants Netball, relocate to south-east Queensland for part or all of the season, which will still be made up of 14 rounds and a normal Finals Series. In order to ensure the wellbeing of athletes, support staff and umpires, the 2020 season will be played in a condensed format. Giants Netball is working with the league to ensure some of their games will still be played in Sydney this season.

enrith Emus coach John Muggleton has warned curious onlookers to not expect too much from his side over the first month of the competition as they slowly adjust to being back in the Shute Shield.

After enjoying the bye in Round 1 last weekend, the Emus will go into this Saturday’s clash against Northern Suburbs as massive underdogs.

Penrith have a tough initiation over the first month or so of the new competition, up against many of last year’s top teams in what will certainly be a baptism of fire.

Speaking with the Weekender earlier this week, Muggleton said it’s been a huge week for the club as they head into tomorrow’s historic clash.

“It’s an important occasion for us as it’s been two years since a Penrith team has played in the Shute Shield,” he said.

“The guys running out there will be carrying a lot of weight on their shoulders because they represent a wide area. It’s an important week for us.”
