HOT SPOT GOES COLD Penrith locals now free to travel to ACT, NT The Northern Territory and ACT have removed the Penrith area as a COVID- 19 hot spot, meaning locals are free to travel to the regions – with a late summer holiday now on the agenda.

Penrith remains shut out from much of the country due to restrictions put in place over the festive period, with COVID- 19 cases popping up across several clusters in Sydney, including at Berala in the city’s west.

But the Penrith Local Government Area has no active COVID- 19 cases, and has largely escaped any scares, with no local venues on NSW Health’s alert list since Penrith RSL just prior to Christmas.

Locals are still being urged to get tested for COVID-19 even if the most minor of symptoms develop, with results being delivered quickly.

Council rejects idea to save Station Plaza ahead of centre’s closure in 2022 ALENA HIGGINS

H

opes of building a new shopping centre to replace St Marys’ Station Plaza have been dashed.

The owners of Station Plaza approached Penrith Council late last year seeking to purchase a portion of Council’s Beacroft Place car park to deliver a new shopping centre, given Station Plaza’s impending closure in early 2022.

The proposal included plans to build a two- storey building with six specialty shops, a larger Coles, state- of- the- art child care centre, medical centre and a 350-space decked car park on the subject site.

However, Councillors declined the unsolicited proposal, deciding to push ahead with its own vision to build a multi-storey car park on the land instead.

“Council has been working over the last 12 months to deliver a multi- storey car park with 667 car parking spaces, sustainable technologies that contribute to Council’s Cooling the City strategy, as well as commercial space,” a Council spokesman said.

“This project had been placed on hold while the bid was assessed, and has now been recommenced.”

The spokesman said unsolicited proposals are “stringently assessed” by Council to determine if they are in Council’s and the community’s best interests.

Included in this, is whether the proposal will deliver something “unique” that Council would be unable to deliver on its own.

Station Plaza’s owner, Haben Property, contended the proposal would have saved hundreds of local jobs and strengthened pedestrian links to Queen Street.

Sydney Metro, which will compulsorily acquire Station Plaza for construction of the North-South rail link that will connect with Western Sydney Airport, is already working with tenants to address their individual needs.

“As part of the property acquisition process, Sydney Metro will assist those tenants looking to relocate both financially and practically,” a Sydney Metro spokesman said.

he period between Christmas and mid-January is traditionally one of the quietest of the year, reserved for cocktails by the pool and Googling just how long you can keep eating that ham after December 25.

But the last two years have gone off script, delivering major news events that have made the holidays anything but peaceful.

Last year it was bushfires that ravaged across the nation, rivalled only with an obsession about Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s holiday.

This year we dealt with a resurgence of COVID- 19, with clusters in Avalon, Croydon and Berala keeping NSW Health officials exceptionally busy over the festive season, while those in Victoria and Queensland dealt with their own scares.

Those NSW Health officials and contact tracers passed the enormous test they were thrown just before Christmas with flying colours, not that you’d know it if you scrolled through Twitter or watched the mainstream news services.

Plenty lost their mind over this period – either driven by legitimate fear or, even worse, a deep seeded desire to see a Liberal government fail in its health response.

The notion that health advice or decisions are wrong simply because your ‘team’ isn’t in charge is preposterous, yet it’s the only thing I can put the obsession with failure from Twitter tear drops down to.

So many were weirdly passionate about a lockdown, including many from the press pack who, you would hope, should know better.

Meanwhile, recency bias was in full swing.

People spoke as if NSW Health hadn’t dealt with outbreaks before, while the New Year’s Cricket Test was apparently the only sporting event to have been held during the COVID era.

Never mind that the NRL was playing in front of crowds right through similar outbreaks, while the Grand Final was played in front of almost 40,000 while daily case numbers continued to bubble away. All achieved successfully.

NSW’s plan to try to and ensure we live something resembling a normal life during this pandemic, while still implementing modest restrictions, has been a winner since day one – yet so many refuse to accept its success.

It seems obvious to me that the Government must balance the health challenges with that of people’s livelihoods and mental health, particularly given the health system as it stands can easily handle the cases being presented each day, while contact tracers are doing their part to ensure the majority of cases are limited to close and household contacts.

Those calling for lockdowns appear to be those with the least to lose.

A lockdown every time a cluster emerges, with Job Keeper and Job Seeker rolling back, would put tens of thousands of people in the hospitality and retail sector suddenly out of work – and the mental toll of that would be extraordinary. More businesses would go to the wall, and the regional NSW tourism sector would be on the brink of collapse, especially with the bed wetting Premiers of other states continuing to play God with their borders.

All along, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has warned there would be outbreaks. She has almost run out of breath telling us that during a pandemic, it’s to be expected – we’re never out of the woods until a vaccine is rolled out.

The current restrictions are doing their job – they’re limiting high risk gatherings and reducing movement around the city and State, without enforcing any sort of official lockdown that would send individuals and businesses to the brink.

We all need to do our part.

We need to continue to be mindful of social distancing, hand hygiene and mask wearing in situations where social distancing is not possible, or where they are mandated. We need to keep up- todate with the venue alert lists, and most importantly, get tested when even the most minor of symptoms present.

The mainstream media must also play its part. Stop over- playing this – and if you think you’re not, think again. Some of the reporting over the summer was absolute gutter stuff.

Searching high and low for an expert to suit the narrative of pushing for a lockdown or reporting as if a meteor is about to collide with Earth is not necessarily good journalism. Calling simple venue lists “hotspots”, or indirectly cheering for lockdowns certainly isn’t either.

As for Twitter, what a cesspit that has become. It’s scary that some of these people raise children, vote and have a platform to sprout such dangerous conspiracy theories and untruths.

We all need to sit back and take a breath. ‘In this together’ has quickly been thrown out the window, and it’s not helping anyone.

he innovative transformation of Soper Place is set to provide so much more than just extra parking for Penrith and is now another step closer with designs formally submitted as part of the Development Application (DA).

The DA for Soper Place in the Penrith CBD seeks to deliver a five storey multi deck car park over a basement parking level, along with a four storey commercial building above.

Council’s design for the Soper Place Revitalisation was arrived at through a NSW Design Excellence Competition, which includes a dynamic multi- use public space, a public roof top garden and a living green facade.

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said the project will deliver a flagship sustainable building which takes meaningful action to help cool the City of Penrith.

Divided nation NT, ACT open borders for Penrith residents

R

esidents living in the Penrith Local Government Area (LGA) are now able to travel to the Northern Territory and ACT after travel restrictions were lifted this week.

The Northern Territory revoked the COVID- 19 hot spot status of the Penrith LGA, meaning locals can travel to the top end without needing to quarantine.

Restrictions were put in place several weeks ago while NSW was dealing with the Berala cluster, with fears that it would continue to spread across Sydney, as well as the Avalon outbreak.

NSW Health authorities have managed to largely contain the spread, with NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian saying the State is now in a “mopping up� phase of both clusters.

Several LGAs remain locked out of the Northern Territory including Blacktown, Canada Bay, Canterbury - Bankstown, Fairfield, Parramatta, Cumberland, Inner West, Burwood and Strathfield.

Meantime the ACT, which had also implemented travel restrictions, on Tuesday afternoon confirmed that the Penrith LGA would no longer be regarded a hot spot. A similar list to the Northern Territory exists of banned LGAs. There are currently no active cases of COVID- 19 in Penrith and the area has

escaped any venue alerts ever since a Penrith RSL scare before Christmas, related to the Avalon cluster.

Earlier this week, NSW Health confirmed a man who visited Mount Druitt Hospital over the weekend and his partner had both been diagnosed with COVID - 19.

These cases are likely linked to the Berala cluster.

Locals are still being urged to get tested even if they have only minor COVID-19 symptoms, with high testing rates considered the key to successfully ensuring there is no missing chains of transmission in the community.

On Monday, the testing site at Penrith Paceway was closed due to power issues but has since re-opened.

While locals can now plan a late summer holiday to the Northern Territory or ACT, much of the nation remains closed.

Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and Western Australia all remain off the travel agenda for locals.

Travel to regional NSW remains a valid option, with the State Government not restricting holidaymakers.

“

It’s a bloody nightmare.”

That’s how Penrith Councillor John Thain has described the congested and dangerous roundabout at the intersection of Boronia Road, Forrester Road and Christie Street, St Marys.

Last month, Councillor Tricia Hitchen requested Council staff urgently investigate why the intersection was still without traffic lights.

A regular user of the roundabout, Cr Hitchen said the traffic was so bad that she had to change the hours she visited a family member in a nearby nursing home because it was too hard to get through.

“My understanding was that this was supposed to be signalised many years ago when the traffic numbers hit 20,000, and we’re way past that,” she said during last month’s Council meeting.

“And I’m just wondering why nothing has been done?”

Cr Hitchen predicted the issue would only get worse now that construction of the St Marys Inland Container Terminal had began.

“Once that kicks off, there will be hundreds more trucks on the road going

through that intersection because it all comes down Dunheved Road,” she said.

“I don’t think we can wait any longer to get something done, and my understanding is that Lendlease was responsible for doing traffic lights there.”

Cr Thain concurred.

“I travel that way a couple of times a day, and that roundabout, particularly when you’re trying to turn right from Forrester Road, or you’re trying to get right from Forrester Road towards the Leagues Club, it’s a bloody nightmare,” he said.

Lendlease has committed to upgrading several roads as part of its 2018 planning agreement with Council, a Lendlease spokesman confirmed.

These include the upgrade and extension of Links Road to a new intersection at Christie Street and Lee Holm Road, widening Forrester Road between the new Christie Street/Links Road intersection and Ropes Creek Bridge, and signalising both the Forrester Road and Christie Street roundabout, and Forrester and Links Road roundabout.

However, the spokesman did not provide a time frame.

“Before timing of roadworks can be confirmed, land acquisition will need to be finalised,” he said.

Development Application lodged for first stage of innovative Sydney Science Park EMILY FESZCZUK

here are grand visions of what the Sydney Science Park will look like but the first steps have been taken to make it a reality.

Property group Celestino has lodged a Development Application (DA) with Penrith City Council to deliver the first stage of the mixed-use smart city.

With Council’s assessment process currently underway, the DA seeks to subdivide land on the 287-hectare site in Luddenham to create Stage A of Precinct 1, including three green star rated, sustainable industrial buildings.

Bordering Luddenham Road in the southern portion of the broader park, Stage A will include 17 high-tech light industrial units with ancillary offices across three, two- storey buildings, a communal café and landscaping, including deep soil planting, over about 10 per cent of the site.

Celestino CEO John Vassallo said the proposed development will be the first industrial architectural landmark for the site and will set the standard for future builds.

A St Marys man has been charged after allegedly damaging property and refusing to comply with a Public Health Order at a fast food outlet in Sydney’s north-west at the weekend.

About 8pm on Saturday, January 9, officers from Quakers Hill Police Area Command were called to a restaurant on Windsor Road, Kellyville Ridge, following reports a customer had become aggressive towards staff.

Police will allege in court that a man began to make an order at the counter when he was asked by staff to complete a COVID-safe check-in, in line with the current Public Health Orders.

The man refused and allegedly became aggressive and verbally abused staff, before he pushed a cash register and printer off the counter and left the restaurant. No injuries were reported.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident commenced and following inquiries, a 25-year-old man was arrested at Riverstone Police station about 4.15pm on Monday.

The St Marys man was charged with ‘destroy or damage property’, ‘use offensive language in/near public place’ and ‘not comply with noticed direction re s7/8/9 – COVID19’.

He was granted conditional bail to appear before Blacktown Local Court on Monday, February 1.

Penrith: Police search for man over November incident

Police are appealing for information following a sexual touching incident in Penrith last year.

About 5.30pm on Tuesday, November 3, a 20-year-old woman was sitting outside a shopping centre on Henry Street, Penrith, when she was approached by an unknown man.

Police have been told the man sexually touched the woman before walking away when she threatened him.

Officers from Nepean Police Area Command were notified and commenced an investigation.

Following extensive inquiries, police have released images of a man who may be able to assist with their inquiries. The image is available to view on the NSW Police Force Facebook page.

He’s described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 180cm tall, of slim build, with dark hair and facial hair. At the time, he was wearing a black suit and black shoes and carrying a white paper bag.

Anyone who may have seen the man, or has information, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Berkshire Park: Man dies in tragic head-on crash

A man has died following a fatal crash at Berkshire Park this week.

About 6am on Tuesday, emergency services were called to The Northern Road, Berkshire Park, after reports a truck and car had collided head-on.

The driver and sole occupant of the car died at the scene.

The male truck driver was uninjured and was taken to Hawkesbury Hospital for mandatory testing.

Officers from Nepean Police Area Command established a crime scene to determine the cause of the crash and the Northern Road was closed between Carrington Road and Leitch Avenue.

s we welcome the New Year, Wentworth Healthcare and Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD) have re- welcomed a joint partnership.

The organisations have renewed their commitment to work together to improve health outcomes for the Nepean and Blue Mountains communities by signing a Memorandum of Understanding.

Sharing the same borders which cover the Local Government Areas of Penrith, Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury and Lithgow, both organisations play a role in planning, management and delivery of health services in the region.

Federally funded Wentworth Healthcare coordinates and supports the delivery of primary healthcare and helps address local healthcare needs and service gaps.

State-funded NBMLHD provides acute and sub-acute in-patient hospital services along with outpatient and outreach community-based health services.

After both organisations formed a joint governance committee in 2019, CEO of Wentworth Healthcare, Lizz Reay, said signing the Memorandum would continue to strengthen the partnership.

“This Memorandum formally recognises the close relationship that already exists between our two organisations,” Ms Reay said.

“It will now build on our commitment to help provide a more coordinated and integrated healthcare system for our community.”

The committee, which is chaired by Gary Smith, has membership from both parties’ Board of Directors, who work together to oversee joint planning and initiatives.

Chief Executive of NBMLHD, Kay Hyman, said they will be collaborating on a range of issues, which will improve health outcomes in the local area on an ongoing basis.

“Both organisations will be strengthened by an integrated approach to delivering healthcare services in the region,” she said.

“We will continue to work together to provide high quality, safe and efficient care for our diverse and rapidly growing community.”

The agreement also acknowledges the particular importance for both organisations of working with significantly disadvantaged individuals and communities, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and people experiencing mental illness.

s the school holidays draw closer to an end, back to school shopping will ramp up for local families.

While parents might be looking for a deal after spending too much during the holiday season, experts are urging them to consider quality over quantity when it comes to school shoes.

Principal Podiatrist at A Step Ahead Foot + Ankle Care, Doctor Brenden Brown said good quality footwear is essential for kids to start the year on the right foot.

“Children spend long hours in their school shoes, and they do so many diverse activities from running to the bus, playing footy at lunch or walking to assembly,” Dr Brown said.

“It is not like adults that might wear different shoes to dinner or while doing sport or walking so it is really important that the shoe is well fitted and better quality.”

Dr Brown said there are a few things families can do to make sure that school shoes are a good fit.

“If you are trying on shoes, do it at the end of the day as most kids’ feet swell, make sure they stand up as their feet can flatten out about half a centimetre, and aim for laces or Velcro so the shoe doesn’t slip around,” he said.

“Most Australian kids have much broader feet so flip the shoe over and put the sole against their other foot to see if it hangs over, plus remember if the shoe is pinching at the shop it is most likely going to be a problem.”

Some people might be hesitant to head to the shops in the current pandemic, but Dr Brown said there are new ways to get expert advice on school shoes.

“Places like Shoes and Sox and The Athlete’s Foot are doing virtual fittings this year for the first time where you have an online appointment with staff or you can download fitting charts to find the size then order online,” he said.

“Don’t get caught up in marketing hype like ‘arch support’ and remember the price often reflects the quality of the shoe and most kids will last the whole year in a school shoe, so you want it to be good, so they don’t have issues down the track.”

Family’s magical start to new year EMILY FESZCZUK

W

hile most people in Penrith spent New Year’s Eve celebrating at home, Walter and Kayla Klinke were in Nepean Hospital preparing to meet their first child.

The Glenmore Park couple’s daughter, Thea, was the first baby born at the hospital in 2021.

Due to be born at the end of January, Mr Klinke said his daughter had other ideas for the parents’ New Year’s plans.

“She decided to come about four weeks early, so my wife went into hospital on New Year’s Eve but gave birth around 10.55am on New Year’s Day,” he told the Weekender.

“Bub did need the forceps in the end to get her out but my wife did such an amazing job and all the staff at Nepean were great.”

Now settling in nicely at home, Mr Klinke said the couple thinks their daughter’s name was a great choice.

“She is our first child but we have been in the IVF system for around 10 years and it has been such a rollercoaster losing previous babies, so we are very lucky to have her,” he said.

“Her middle name is Jeann after my wife’s Oma who passed away and we loved the name Thea, which means Gift of God, so we thought it was certainly very fitting for her.”

Mr Klinke said having a baby during a pandemic has been a different experience, but he wouldn’t change it.

“Having a baby during a pandemic has made things a little harder with appointments and going out but we just had to adapt and she has already made our year better,” he said.

The couple didn’t find out the sex of their baby, making their New Year’s surprise even more special.

“It never bothered me if I had a son or daughter but it was such a great surprise to have a little girl and she already has me wrapped around her little finger,” Mr Klinke said.

Being born on a notable day, Mr Klinke said he hopes Thea feels special when she gets older.

“I hope she likes having her birthday on New Year’s Day because I think it is a great day to celebrate and no one will ever forget it,” he said.

“She already has a massive personality and doesn’t cry a lot yet, but I am excited to see what she is like as she grows up.”

Couple’s Lucky win A Penrith couple have declared they’re taking some time off work to celebrate winning $200,000 in Tuesday’s Lucky Lotteries Mega Jackpot draw.

When an official from The Lott called the pair, they had just checked their ticket and made the startling discovery themselves.

“This is good,” the winning man laughed.

“My wife is crying; she’s crying a lot. I am feeling quite shocked to be honest!

“I checked our online account before, and I haven’t been able to sit still since then. It’s a big surprise!

“The only reason we bought this ticket was because we had $5.50 in our account and thought we might as well use it. We never buy Lucky Lotteries tickets!

og obsessed Emu Plains resident Tracey Horey is the co- founder of a unique new online platform that is set to get tails wagging.

Sniffspace is Australia’s only online directory of privately owned, safe and secure off-leash spaces that owners can rent for their dogs.

After owning her first anxious dog Rafferty, Ms Horey said the idea for Sniffspace was born.

“Just like humans, dogs need different spaces to explore and Raff is very well trained but doesn’t like some strangers or dogs with no manners, so off-leash dog parks aren’t the best option,” she said.

“There is also more dog-friendly apartment blocks and people buying into new estates with small blocks, so the need for spaces for dogs to play safely became evident.”

Still in its initial stages, where people can add their dogs or list their spaces for people to use, Ms Horey said it has received a positive response so far.

“We have had 750 people Australiawide register their interest to either rent their land out or to add their dogs,” she said.

“There were about 300 from NSW and we have got a property in Londonderry

while making an extra income for your backyard,” she said.

“Dog owners can pick spaces up to a few acres, make sure the area is secure and that no other people or dogs are around so you can spend time bonding with your dogs while they go on a ‘Sniffari’.”

Alan Brown remembered Weekender on location: thanks to new pool name ISK is worth the drive EMILY FESZCZUK

T A ceremony was held late last year to reveal a special tribute to the late Alan Brown.

T

he indoor pool hall at Ripples Leisure Centre St Marys has been named in memory of a man who made a splash at the venue and left his mark on the Penrith community.

The late Alan Brown was a part of the Ripples family from its inception, starting out as a founding volunteer member when the Board was formed in 1994. Mr Brown was then a representative of the Penrith Swim Club and went on to spend the last 12 years of his life as Chair of Ripples.

A long-time Penrith resident, Mr Brown was also on the Board of performing arts school McDonald College and in a prominent position at Australian- owned company Fredon, where he learned the skills he brought to Ripples by way of

ensuring strong, financially viable business operations.

Family members joined Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown, Councillors Greg Davies and Ross Fowler and other guests at Ripples St Marys recently for the official pool naming ceremony and unveiling of the plaque.

“I am proud to announce that from this moment on, this pool, which is popular with patrons young and old, will be known as the Alan Brown Memorial Pool, in celebration of Mr Brown’s life and his contributions to Ripples and our City,” Ms McKeown said.

“During Mr Brown’s tenure, the St Marys complex grew from a community pool to a thriving leisure centre – he put his heart and soul into this place.”

he year 2020 was meant to see Australian music icon John Williamson celebrate his 75th birthday, his 50th Anniversary in the entertainment industry and also be his swansong year on the road, but COVID-19 put a pause on that.

John is picking up in 2021 where he left off and is bringing his ‘Winding Back’ tour to Penrith for two special shows, which will now celebrate 51 years of music.

Enjoying more time at his country property in Queensland, John said last year’s shows were meant to be a start of the musician’s career slowing down.

“The ‘Winding Back’ tour doesn’t mean I am retiring, I just want to work a lot less, enjoy time at home with my cows and stick to the bigger events,” he told the Weekender.

“The thing is a lot of the shows from last year got pushed back because of COVID, so now this year is much busier than I expected it be.”

Releasing his first song ‘Old Man Emu’ in 1970, which kicked-started a five-decade career, John said he will play through all of his classic hits.

“There are always songs people demand like ‘Mallee Boy’ and ‘True Blue’, so they get played, but some of the songs I wrote in the early days were crap so I skip them,” he said. “‘Old Man Emu’ is of course in there but I always make the audience wait, I don’t do that one too early.”

Still enjoying performing live, John said the twin shows at Penrith will be very special performances.

“I love live performances and if I could snap my fingers and be on stage I would do it until I die but it is all the in between sitting at airports and in cars,” he said.

A ‘True Blue’ Aussie performer, John said he hopes people leave his show with a smile.

“We are so lucky to live in this country so we will be celebrating that, and if they don’t go away smiling, I haven’t done a good enough job,” he said.

When Dorothy’s house squashes the Wicked Witch of the East, she is ecstatically thanked by the liberated Munchkins and given permission to wear the witch’s powerful silver slippers.

From there, Baum’s lovable characters, rubber - legged Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion and Tin Woodsman, join Dorothy on a journey to meet the great Oz. While on their trek, they battle the Wicked Witch who is determined to get revenge for the death of her sister.

At the movies...

Far from a classic, but still plenty to love WONDER WOMAN 1984 +++ 2 hours, 35 minutes If you’ve avoided seeing ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ so far because of mainly lukewarm reviews, I’m here to remind you that one person’s trash is another’s treasure.

Sure, this follow - up to 2017’s ‘Wonder Woman’ doesn’t quite have the impact of its predecessor, but it’s far from a disaster, and is once again highlighted by a terrific performance from Gal Gadot in the title role.

The film is set in 1984 – hence the name – where Diana Prince is working at Washington DC’s Smithsonian Institute, while secretly performing the heroic deeds of Wonder Woman on the side.

When failing businessman Max

Lord (Pedro Pascal) visits the Smithsonian, he steals the ‘Dreamstone’, which grants its holder one wish. Max wishes to become the stone itself, essentially granting him unlimited power.

What ensues is largely your typical superhero film, with a few surprises along the way.

Those strongly attached to the DC universe will love the opening sequence, a flashback to a pivotal moment in a young Diana’s life, but those casual observers will be well entertained by an action- packed adventure that rarely lags despite its run time of more than two hours.

Is your child experiencing heel pain? Here’s what could be causing it... mary cause of Sever’s disease. The growth plates in the heel are prone to injury until they are fully developed. As a result, the repetitive stresses of sport and constant physical activity can irritate it, particularly if the achilles tendon is tight or deconditioned.

However other risk factors may include: sporting activities that involve jumping and agility, prolonged standing, poor footwear, flat feet (over pronated), obesity, sudden increase or change in physical activity, a recent growth spurt or the presence of biomechanical abnormalities.

What can be done?

In order to treat any injury we need to work out why the injury has occurred in the first place, this is done during a biomechanics assessment. During this appointment we obtain medical and injury history, perform footwear assessments, analyse walking, check muscle strength and analyse joint mobility. Once all necessary tests are performed a patient specific treatment plan can be implemented. This may include manual therapies, strengthening programs, footwear education and orthotic therapy depending on the child’s needs.

ever’s disease (calcanea agpophysitis) is the most common cause of heel pain in children, particularly physically active adolescents who are about to begin puberty. Sever’s disease is a painful inflammation of the growth plate in the heel, where the achilles tendon attaches at the back of the heel bone.

It typically affects kids between the ages of 8- 14 years during periods of rapid growth because the heel bone is not fully developed until approximately 15 years of age. If repetitive stress is applied in this time it can cause pain and inflammation of the growth plate.

Symptoms: • Pain, swelling and redness in the back or bottom of the heel.

• Limping.

• Walking on toes to avoid pain.

• Difficulty running, jumping or participating in their usual activities/sports.

• Pain when the sides of the heel are squeezed.

• Tenderness along the achilles tendon.

The importance of playing to learn can’t be underestimated, which is why we are launching a brand new school holiday offering this January – Paddles Super Summer Camp!

Our Paddles Super Summer Camp is a two- day program, with the cost 100 per cent covered by the 2021 $100 Creative Kids Voucher! The camp runs Thursday, January 21 and Friday, January 22 at Nepean Aquatic Centre from 8.30am-3.30pm both days.

Having worked with children in the local area for over 30 years, we are often asked if we provide whole day programs in school holiday periods. To meet this request we have combined a range of activities into a two- day curriculum showcasing water sports, aquatic education, creative expression, fun, games and fitness!

Activities will be both land and waterbased and will include CPR and water safety demonstrations and practise, art

and craft activities, stories and animations, water polo and water basketball, songs, games, aqua drumming and a pool

party with our inflatable slide!

The beach, the ocean, backyard pools and swimming are culturally entrenched

in our Australian lifestyle, so safety messages and themes run throughout all activities for the duration of the camp to ensure the children take home vital aquatic safety messages.

Our focus is on facilitating a safe, familiar and supportive environment for children to experience a range of creative endeavours, gain confidence, experience teamwork, make new friends and encourage a generation of children to learn something new.

The emphasis is on effort, and every child’s unique strengths are encouraged within each activity. Our two - day Summer Camp is open to Kindy to Year 6 aged children, and all children must be able to swim without flotation devices.

Lifeguards will be present for all waterbased activities. Weather is not an issue as our large training room is air conditioned and our pools are heated.

Why you need to be smarter with your financial goals this year

we can identify why we are saving the money. Is it for a house deposit, a holiday, our children’s education or retirement?

Saving $100 per week to purchase a house in 2024 would be an excellent goal.

There are some excellent habits that assist us in achieving these goals.

1. Keep a track of your spending – that way you are able decipher between your essential and discretionary monthly expenses and pinpoint areas where you can reduce spending, increase savings or decrease debt. Try to identify spending that adds little or nothing to your life and re-direct that to your goal.

2. Save First – Once you have identified how much you can save, put that money aside. Better still, also separate out all nondiscretionary spending (money for bills), the remainder is for you to spend.

3. Pay off your credit card debt – Credit card debt is a millstone around our neck. Interest rates are very high, normally around 20 per cent. If you have any additional funds, they

should initially be used to repay credit card debt. You won’t receive a return anywhere near 20 per cent without significant risk. Once you have paid off your credit card, you will significantly increase your disposable income

Those savings can be re- directed to your goal.

The New Year is a great time to reassess your financial situation. When you do so, go one step further than a vague resolution, create a SMART goal.

The top three financial New Year’s resolutions set in Australia are; saving more, spending less, and reducing debt. While these are great in theory, they are too broad and don’t focus on the small and simple ways to achieve these goals.

Turning vague broad concepts into SMART goals will significantly increase the chance of being successful. SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timely. Instead of saving more, a SMART goal would be to save $100 per week.

oyota has led the Australian automotive industry to a better-than-expected sales total of 916,968 new vehicles for 2020.

The industry tally includes a record 54,335 Toyota hybrids, propelling electrified vehicles to more than five per cent of the annual national market for the first time.

Despite the toughest economic conditions experienced in a generation, Toyota’s overall tally of 204,801 customer deliveries came within just 965 sales or 0.5 per cent of its total from the previous year.

Market share of 22.3 per cent was Toyota’s strongest result since 2008 – a rise of 3.0 points.

Toyota became the first automotive company to take a clean sweep as the best- selling brand, while also having the top- selling vehicle in every major category – overall (HiLux), passenger car (Corolla), sports- utility vehicle (RAV4) and light-commercial vehicle (HiLux).

It was the best- selling brand for the 24th time, including the past 18 years in a row – and the top seller in every state and territory.

Toyota dealers sold more than 200,000 vehicles for the ninth year in a row and for the 16th time in the past 17 years.

For the third year in a row, customers bought twice as many vehicles from Toyota than from any other make.

his Saturday’s blockbuster double header between the Western Sydney Wanderers and Sydney FC is officially the hottest ticket in town, with a COVID regulated crowd of around 20,000 set to be on deck at Stadium Australia in Sydney Olympic Park.

Both clubs’ A- League teams will kick off proceedings at 5pm before Western Sydney and Sydney FC do battle in the W-League at 7.40pm.

Tomorrow evening’s A- League blockbuster will be the first time in nearly a year that the Wanderers and Sky Blues

have played a game against each other in front of a passionate crowd.

The last time the two sides met, on March 21 at Bankwest Stadium, the game was played behind closed doors due to the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This time around however, crowds are welcome to attend football matches again and they will no doubt be keen to see their sides do battle albeit in a new COVID-safe world.

While Sydney FC well and truly have the wood over the Wanderers over the past eight years, the Sky Blues haven’t beaten their arch rivals since way back in December 2018 – with the Wanderers

picking up two wins and a draw during the 2019/20 season.

Western Sydney may be going into Saturday’s clash as heavy underdogs against last year’s Champions, but they are expected to be full of confidence after notching up their first win of the new season against Newcastle last Friday at McDonald Jones Stadium.

The Red & Black opened up a 2-0 lead thanks to Ziggy Gordon and Tate Russell goals on either side of half- time, but a Nigel Boogaard header reduced that lead to one, setting up an entertaining finish to the tense affair, which ultimately ended in favour of the visitors.

Wanderers coach Carl Robinson, who

was coming up against his former team in the Jets for the first time, said he was delighted to see his troops record their first win.

“We put all the work in last week [against Macarthur] and we lost to a deflected goal. I don’t think we deserved to win last week but I don’t think we deserved to lose,” he said.

“To get points on the board early in the season is important for confidence, but I thought we played very well tonight. I’m pleased for them.”

Meanwhile, Western Sydney’s W-League side will be aiming for back to back wins after also defeating the Jets 2-1 last week. Tickets are still on sale.

hile local footy fans were enjoying their Christmas and New Year break by the pool or at the beach, it has certainly been a busy month over at Panthers HQ. Here’s what you may have missed over the summer…

New recruits Penrith boosted their depth over Christmas by signing utility back Jaeman Salmon to a one-year deal.

The 21-year- old joins the Panthers after making his NRL debut with Parramatta in 2018.

“I’m excited to be part of such a strong squad and can’t wait to rip in,” Salmon said.

“From Ivan (Cleary) to the players, there are a lot of people here I can learn from and continue to develop my game.

“I’m focused on training as hard as I can so I’ll be ready to go in whatever role they need me to play.”

Meanwhile, the Panthers have also nabbed former Cronulla Sharks forward Scott Sorensen, 27, on a one-year deal.

“I’m extremely grateful to have an opportunity here at Panthers,” he said.

“As an outsider looking in I was always impressed by the culture and camaraderie between Penrith players.”

Sorensen has played 39 NRL games.

Re-signings While Panthers fans are still awaiting news on the contract extensions of Jarome Luai, Stephen Crichton and Isaah Yeo, they were gifted an early Christmas present on December 18 with the re- signing of in-demand young forward Spencer Leniu.

Despite being chased by several clubs including Melbourne and Canterbury, the 20- year- old prop committed himself to Penrith until at least the end of 2023.

“I’m humbled and blessed to extend my time at Panthers,” Leniu said.

“This club and this community has been home for me since I moved over from New Zealand 10 years ago.

“I know the staff and players here will help take my game to the next level. It’s a special group of people.

“We’re determined to turn the success of last season into something more and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

enrith Panthers veteran Josh Mansour has been released from the final year of his contract to join NRL rivals South Sydney.

Mansour’s likely departure had been rumoured for months with this year’s Grand Final turning out to be his last game for Penrith.

The 30- year- old winger made his NRL debut for the Panthers in 2012 and played 158 games for the club.

During his time at the Panthers, Mansour played seven games for Australia and made three Origin appearances for NSW. “While this isn’t an ending I ever envisaged, I’ve made peace with the decision and I’m ready to move forward with a new challenge,” Mansour said.

“I want to thank the club and the fans for their incredible support through the ups and downs of the last nine years. I’m so grateful for every moment and everything Panthers has given me and my family.

“Whatever the future holds, I’ll always consider myself a Panther and be proud of what I achieved at the club.”

Panthers coach Ivan Cleary also paid tribute to the immense contribution of Mansour during his time at the club.

“I have fond memories of giving Josh his NRL debut back in 2012,” Cleary said.

“The fact that 80 players have made their first grade debuts for Penrith since that day is testament to just how significant Josh’s service to our club has been.

“He’s held in high regard by everyone at Panthers and we wish him and his family the best of luck moving forward.”

Panthers General Manager Rugby League Matt Cameron said Mansour had given “great service” to the club.

“He’s been an ever- popular member of our squad, a favourite with the fans and has proven the strength of his character in overcoming several serious injuries,” he said.

“As difficult as this parting of ways may be, it’s out of respect for Josh that we felt so strongly about giving him the opportunity to seek a starting NRL spot at another club in 2021.”

Souths confirmed that Mansour had signed a two- year deal with the club on Wednesday. Rabbitohs Head of Football Mark Ellison said Mansour will bring more than just his football ability when he joins the Rabbitohs.

“Josh is a highly experienced NRL and representative player that will bring many attributes to our team, the club and our community,” he said.

“He is a quality team and club man that inspires his team mates and brings energy to any team of which he is a part.”

The 30- year- old Premiership winner, who played 19 games for the Panthers last season, will link up with the Rhinos on a three-year deal.

“Zane had an extraordinary impact on our young squad following his arrival at the club last season,” Panthers General Manager Rugby League, Matt Cameron said.

“He consistently elevated our training sessions with his professionalism and played an important role in the team’s success in 2020.

“We’ve granted Zane’s request for a release out of respect to him and his family, in consideration of the valuable opportunity they’ve been presented by Leeds Rhinos.”

Another Panther on the move before the 2021 season gets underway is fan favourite Josh Mansour (see story on page 52), who has signed with South Sydney.

Merv Cartwright Medal Panthers halfback Nathan Cleary capped off a sensational 2020 season by winning the prestigious Merv Cartwright Medal.

In an unforgettable year for the Panthers, Cleary was named the club’s best and fairest after leading the team on a recordbreaking 17-game winning streak.

The 23-year-old was also voted the club’s Members Player of the Year to go with his first Merv Cartwright Medal.

James Fisher- Harris won his second consecutive John Farragher Award for Courage and Determination, while Stephen Crichton claimed the Ben Alexander Rookie of the Year Award.

Panthers football manager Jason Wrigley was named Club Person of the Year, in recognition of his efforts to help the club navigate a season of challenging biosecurity restrictions.

With biosecurity measures in place, the club announced its major award winners via a video presentation on December 20.

Brent Naden is free to play in 2021.

will be free to play in the opening game of the NRL season at Panthers Stadium after he was handed a one month’s suspension for drug use.

The 25-year-old did not contest a Notice of Alleged Anti- Doping Rule Violation in relation to positive samples for Benzoylecgonine and Methylecgonine (metabolites of Cocaine) collected from him following the NRL Grand Final on October 25.

Having established that the ingestion of the cocaine was out- of- competition and not for performance enhancing purposes, Naden was sanctioned in accordance with new provisions of the incoming World Anti- Doping Code 2021 which permit a one- month period of ineligibility for qualifying athletes who also undertake an approved rehabilitation program.

In accordance with the WADA Code, Naden’s one-month period of suspension is backdated to the date of his provisional suspension and he is now eligible to return to training and competition.

Naden is off- contract this season and given the club has stood by him through his recent issues, a new deal would not surprise anybody.

Eva will be ably supported by the same leadership group as last season – Jessica Dal Pos, Britt Tully, Cora Staunton and Pepa Randall.

Dal Pos was stand- in captain for two matches last season while Eva was sidelined with injury.

Eva said the diverse make- up of the leadership group gives them the ability to connect with all 30 members of the Giants’ squad.

“When we put the leadership group together last year, we came up with a different process and part of that process was identifying the different skill sets our team needs in their leaders,” she said.

“Through that, we’ve got some girls that are complete polar opposites. But we’ve got a list of 30 girls and not everyone’s the same so we tick all of those boxes and together as a collective unit, we make sure we’re meeting the needs of the playing group.”

The Giants AFLW side relocated to Albury in southern NSW on January 1. They are due to play practice matches this weekend before taking on Fremantle on January 31.

020 was a year of ups and downs in the sporting world but for Penrithbased ice hockey club the Flyers, it will be a year they’ll never forget.

While the Flyers, which play out of the Penrith Ice Palace, had their fair share of challenges during the year due to the pandemic, they managed to end 2020 on a major high with two Grand Final appearances and one Championship.

The Flyers’ Bantams (Mixed U16) team defeated favourites the Sydney Bears 4-1 in the Grand Final at Macquarie Ice Rink to be crowned 2020 IHNSW Bantams State Champions, while the club’s Midgets (Men’s U19) team fell just short in the decider, also against the Bears, claiming silver.

Bantams head coach and Midgets assistant coach Dave Costa said he was proud of his young troops for all the success they achieved in 2020, especially after the many hurdles they faced throughout the year.

“The Bantams team worked hard and learned a lot throughout the season.

They were a good bunch of kids that wanted to play for each other.

“The Midgets team, they were under matched skill- wise in most areas but they worked really well as a team and managed to get the silver, which was a huge effort.”

Both Flyers teams were made up of predominately local kids, while others

travelled as far as Newcastle and the Shire to be part of the action.

Costa said the core group had been playing together for several years, which was one of their keys to success last year.

“The core group of players have grown up playing and training together and know each other very well,” he said.

With the celebrations finally winding down, players and coaches will return to the ice as early as next month for preseason training before the new competition begins over Easter.

Around the grounds CRICKET: Penrith have begun the New Year with a loss against Sydney University in Round 9 of the Belvidere Cup. Playing in a One-Day match at University Oval, Penrith won the toss and elected to bat first. The visitors were strong early with the top order posting some big numbers, but in the end Penrith couldn’t handle the might of Sydney Uni’s bowling attack and were all out for 235. Cameron Weir top scored for Penrith with 95, while Tyran Liddiard notched up 52. When Sydney University hit the crease later that day, they managed to reach Penrith’s total with a little under five overs to spare on 4/239. Penrith will return to Howell Oval this Saturday to face Parramatta in a One-Day match.

CRICKET: Round 11 of the Nepean District Cricket Association (NDCA) is in the books, with Panthers Cricket Club enjoying a great weekend of results.

In first grade, Panthers will remain in fourth position after their match against Phoenix Sports Club was washed out.

In sixth grade, Panthers 8/183 defeated Mulgoa Valley 10/46 to retain their place at the top of the table.

GRIDIRON: The Nepean Ducks’ Men’s and Colts teams will play their first games of the New Year when they take on the West Sydney Pirates this Saturday at Forestville Park. Nepean’s men’s team are currently out of Finals contention with two rounds to play, while their Colts team look set to reach the playoffs yet again.

BASEBALL: The Greater Western Warriors first grade team will return to the diamond this weekend for the latest round of the NSW State Baseball League competition. Greater Western, who have been struggling all year, will battle the Ryde Hawks this Sunday at Andrews Road Baseball Complex in Cranebrook.

The club will be hoping to kick off 2021 with a rare win as the competition enters the business end.

NETBALL: Panthers netballer and rising NSW Swifts star Leilani Rohweder has been elevated to Training Partner status for the 2021 Super Netball season.

The Lismore junior, who is now registered with the Penrith District Netball Association, was a standout performer in the Academy Program during 2020 and was a member of the extended Swifts squad which contested the Super Netball Hub in Queensland.

On court she performed well against the Giants in a pre-season game in Goulburn and was also named in the Australian U21 squad as well as the NSW U19 team. Head coach Briony Akle said Rohweder proved herself to be wise beyond her years during her time with the senior team on the Sunshine Coast.

“There aren’t many steeper learning curves than moving away from your family and friends for three months but Leilani proved that she is made of stern stuff,” she said.

The 29-year-old took the reins from inaugural AFLW captain Amanda Farrugia following the 2019 season and has led the team through one of the most turbulent years in the club’s short history.

“It’s exciting and I’m looking forward to getting stuck in to a new season with the rest of the leadership group,” Eva said.

“It’s important that you don’t dismiss or try and hide the fact that we’ve had really significant challenges in the last 12 months and particularly the last six months.

“We have an incredibly resilient group. We have lost one of our own (Jacinda Barclay died) and that’s still very raw for our group.

“We’ve just been really big on making sure we support our team – not just the players but our staff and everyone in the wider club.

“The focus is on making sure we acknowledge that but we put ourselves in a great position to support our people.”
