From humble beginnings in 1991, The Western Weekender has grown to be a proud part of the exciting Penrith community elcome to The Western Weekender’s 25th anniversary year. It is a great honour to be the Managing Editor of the Weekender during what is a milestone year for the publication – a quarter of a century of delivering Penrith with quality news and information. Officially, our first publication was released on March 15, 1991. John Cartwright was on the cover, perhaps indicative of the relationship and passion the paper would develop for rugby league in the district. Ironically, the Weekender started in the same year that the Panthers won their first premiership. The Weekender back then was very different to the Weekender you see today (much like Penrith itself has changed). Over the past 25 years, it has evolved and changed dramatically, and today stands as one of the most successful independent publications in the country. The beginning of the Weekender journey was quite simple – a group of business people thought the city was getting a bad name and wanted to produce a publication that presented the positive side of Penrith. For the best part of two decades, the Weekender was Penrith’s ‘good news’ newspaper. And while we still very much pay homage to that intent today, the Weekender has evolved to be a true local newspaper – breaking significant stories, investigating the issues that matter to you and informing the local community better than anybody else. During the past 25 years, the Weekender has employed hundreds of people – many of them going on to very significant careers in the media or elsewhere. Technology has changed, ownership has changed and the faces have changed, but one thing has remained the same from day one until now – our dedication to

Penrith. Every single issue has been produced right here in Penrith, and it is poignant that in October last year, our ownership again became local when Kathryn Garton purchased the Weekender as part of the Western Sydney Publishing Group. The significance of the Weekender’s success in Penrith is heightened by the fact that we face competition from internationally recognised brands in News Limited and Fairfax. We do not shy away from such competition, but we will continue to go to every length possible to spread the word that the Weekender is something uniquely special, and something that Penrith can be proud of and should support. We are so very much appreciative of each and every one of you who pick up the Weekender each Friday and read about the week that was and the week that is coming up. During the past 25 years, we have covered every significant news event to have happened in Penrith. We’ve been there for the moments when Penrith shone brightly – whether it be on the sporting stage, in education, business or politics – and we’ve also been there through the dark times. Penrith is a city like no other. Its business community is fiercely loyal and parochial, with talented men and women the equal of national and world corporate leaders. Its residents are family-oriented and proud of where they come from, eager to make Penrith a better place in the generations to come. As we celebrate our 25th anniversary throughout this year, we raise our glasses to everyone who has been involved with the Weekender over the past quarter of a century in whatever capacity that may be. We look forward to the next 25 years of informing Penrith. – Troy Dodds WW20834

It’s more than just selling ads
Weekender team members Linda, Karlee, Ali and Katie at a recent sales event he hard work of the Western Weekender’s team of passionate and dedicated sales representatives has achieved much more than just selling advertisements. The Weekender’s Sales Manager, Simon Gould has overseen the team for the last five years, and said it’s really important they foster a relationship with advertisers. “Partly because it’s good business to help your customers grow, but because they really want to see these people be successful,” he said. “Some of these guys have been here longer than me, and their relationship goes beyond a provider-customer relationship. It becomes a friendship.” In becoming friends with their clients,

the sales team are genuinely interested in that client’s business and look for every chance to help them prosper. “Whenever they see an opportunity to grab a little bit of extra coverage through editorial they will do that,” Mr Gould said. “There’s no way it’s going to benefit the sales representative, it’s purely motivated by doing the right thing for somebody they have formed a really good relationship with.” The nine sales representatives are at the front foot of the Weekender, with hundreds of interactions with the businesses community every week. The Weekender boasts the largest on the ground media sales team in the Penrith area.

SPECIAL FEATURE 25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION
Journalist Dale Drinkwater and sales executives Andrew Harris and Katie Grasso check out the Weekender
How we put the Weekender together each week utting The Western Weekender together each week requires a huge joint effort from our locally-based sales, editorial and production teams. Here’s how it happens...
P
THURSDAY For most, Monday is the start of the working week but for the team at the Weekender, Thursday is when it all begins.
With our latest edition coming off the press, work begins on the next issue. Sales and Editorial meetings are held to discuss the previous edition, and more importantly, the one that is being put together for the following week. Our journalists monitor news as it comes in, and start working on stories that have already been planned such as entertainment, community stories and events.
Our sales team spends a lot of Thursday on the road, visiting clients, while our production team starts putting together design ideas and concepts for our next edition. Meanwhile, our locally based delivery teams start delivering the Weekender to almost 60,000 homes and businesses across the Penrith Local Government Area (LGA). This is a mammoth task that is done each and every week and
uses GPS tracking to ensure papers are delivered correctly.
FRIDAY Our journalists monitor news as it comes in, and continue to work on stories by interviewing relevant story subjects across a range of issues. Journalists work on stories in a variety of different ways – they interview many people in person,

while other interviews are conducted over the phone. Delivery of the newspaper continues and is finalised by about lunchtime on Friday, with all 60,000 copies delivered to homes and businesses across Penrith. The first of many layouts for the following week’s paper is completed, with booked advertisements and completed stories placed on pages. The layout will change significantly over the next three or four days.
SATURDAY AND SUNDAY The news doesn’t stop just because it’s the weekend. Our journalists continue to monitor local news across the weekend. During the rugby league season, our team is on deck for Penrith Panthers matches both home and away, covering the game itself as well as all the post-match media conferences. There’s plenty of events being held on Saturdays and Sundays, so our team is always active and busy.
MONDAY Council meetings are held on Monday nights and the Weekender always has a journalist in attendance. Meanwhile, journalists chase up stories from across the weekend, particularly any crime incidents that may have occurred. Stories continue to be finalised, and the paper starts to come together with the editor deciding where stories will run and if more or less information is needed.
SPECIAL FEATURE
Our sales team is busy meeting with clients and finalising advertisements.
TUESDAY Our Western Property magazine is finalised for print on Tuesdays, which means a busy day for the sales and production teams as the finishing touches are put on the latest publication. Tuesday afternoons are exceptionally busy as the Western Property deadline approaches. Our journalists work to finish any remaining stories for the upcoming issue. A briefing with local police is also held on Tuesdays to bring us up to date on any previous stories or new ones. The editing process of the paper also begins – our editor reads every single word you see in our publication across Tuesdays and Wednesdays – making small tweaks to stories and looking out for any errors. Meanwhile, the layout is finalised – both the editor and sales manager agree on the final paginations and address any outstanding issues ahead of deadline day.

WEDNESDAY It’s deadline day at the Weekender and it’s busier than Christmas Eve at the North Pole. Stories are finalised, the last remaining advertisements are sold and the editor signs off on every page. It’s an early morning and a late night for our team, but when the lights are finally switched off on Wednesday evening, the latest edition is ready to be printed!

SPECIAL FEATURE 25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION
Weekender proves a strong training ground for journalists he Western Weekender is known for helping aspiring young journalists start their career in the industry. Over the years, many have gone on to succeed in their chosen paths, much like ABC’s State Parliament Reporter and ex-Weekender journalist Lucy McNally. Lucy first began work with the Weekender in 2003 as a junior journalist while she was still studying at university. “I was keen to get as much practical experience as I could, and after handing my resume into the Weekender and waiting for a few months, I got a call to come in for a chat and it went from there,” Lucy said. “I didn’t really know much about the paper to begin with and when I was asked what I did know, I said they did a really good job of covering stories and that they were big on sports.” Lucy said she loves the team dynamic that the Weekender offers. “It was great to be a part of a small team where everyone knew what each person’s role was to get the paper done and that everyone was made to feel important – you feel like you’re working towards a common goal,” she said. During her almost three years at the Weekender, Lucy went from covering community announcements and
T
programs to delving deep into the court room and Council environments. “There was a big story on the Penrith Panthers and an inquiry was announced, not long after I had started at the paper,” she said. “I was so thankful I got to do something as big as that so early on in my career. “Another highlight was a story I got to do involving Penrith Stadium and the then Prime Minister John Howard coming to visit, which got me a front page byline.” If it wasn’t for the Weekender, Lucy said she wouldn’t have been able to get a job at the ABC during her last semester of university. “It was really great to have that starting point and to be given the opportunities I was given,” she said. “I know the Weekender was a really great training ground for me because when I did my first lot of work experience at the ABC, I realised I was a bit faster than the other guys because I did understand several techniques that you need in a news room environment; it probably didn’t hit me until I saw that the ABC were impressed with my work.” Lucy congratulated the Weekender on its 25th anniversary milestone. – Jade Aliprandi

cartoon rat, a column from Ray Hadley and a promise to Penrith were among the highlights in the first ever edition of The Western Weekender back in 1991. In an editor’s note in the first edition on March 15, 1991, the Weekender declared: “We believe we have the right format to become and remain a successful newspaper – light, bright and easy reading, columns which will interest most people in the community – and sport.” The editor’s note went on to say: “We are providing a product which is sure to interest advertisers – our rates are the cheapest in town, and in these difficult times, people are looking for value for money.” The first ever edition featured John Cartwright on the front page, declaring that 1991 may indeed be the year of the Panthers. Turns out he was right. Inside, news of The Village People coming to Penrith was high on the agenda, as was an investigation into white asbestos and its potential dangers.

The first edition of the Weekender The paper featured sections on tourism, history, education, gardening and more – the early signs of the complete local newspaper that the Weekender was to become down the track. The original masthead featured our ‘birds’, which continued until 2009. 25 years later, The Western Weekender maintains a strong format, a loyal readership and has become the successful newspaper we promised back in 1991. And the words we started with back then still stand today: “Here’s to a long and lasting relationship between The Western Weekender and you!”

he State Government brought Ita Buttrose to Penrith this week to spruik the Opal Card for seniors, but it faces a significant backlash from hard working locals who are set to be slugged more to get to and from work under proposed changes. The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) has proposed changes to the State Government’s current Opal ticketing system. IPART propose to scrap free travel after eight trips per week, and charge commuters for their 10 most expensive trips, a move that has Penrith residents like Ian Hammond feeling cheated. “A Penrith resident catching the train to and from the city five days a week during peak times would see their weekly transport cost increase over 25 per cent, from $51.68 per week to $65 per week,” he said. Under the current Weekly Travel Reward, a Penrith commuter who uses just one form of public transport to get to and from work five days a week pays for the first four days, and their fifth is free. At $6.46 to get from Emu Plains to Central during peak times, this commuter would pay $51.68 for their first eight trips from Monday to Thursday, and travel free on Friday. Under the proposed changes recommended by IPART where commuters pay for their 10 most expensive trips, the same commuter would pay $64.60, an increase of $671.84 over 52 weeks. Ita says seniors should embrace Opal Government continues push for seniors to sign up to new ticketing system DALE DRINKWATER
Story continued from » p. 1 Opposition Leader Luke Foley has slammed the proposed changes. “This fare structure will sting people who rely on public transport the most – commuters travelling medium and long distances from western Sydney,” he said. Transport Minister Andrew Constance has defended the proposal and rejected Labor’s claims commuters could pay up to $1000 a year more. “They have assumed that people travel on public transport five days a week, 52 weeks a year and have forgotten that there is a weekly fare cap when it comes to public transport,” he said. However, IPART also proposed to increase the weekly fare cap from $60 to $65, which would not benefit the average commuter travelling to and from the city each day. And despite Mr Constance’s claims, thousands of Penrith residents do travel to and from the city five days a week for most weeks of the year. State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, said the IPART review is to make the ticketing system fairer, especially for those who use different modes of transport.
Ita Buttrose in Penrith on Monday “At the moment customers who switch between trains, buses, ferries and light rail are charged for each separate journey, which can make travel costly,” he said. “Under IPART’s proposal, the majority of Opal customers will pay less, with big savings for customers who switch between modes.”
But after crunching the numbers, research by finder.com.au shows 68 per cent of Sydney commuters would actually pay more for their weekly commute, contrary to suggestions that prices may decrease following the fee overhaul. Meanwhile, Ms Buttrose has one message for local seniors who are still using their pre-purchased Pensioners Excursion paper tickets. “If Penrith commuters want to continue travelling for no more than $2.50 every day wherever they go, it’s essential they get a Gold Opal Card,” she said. “It’s so much easier to travel, it’s very convenient, you can just tap on and tap off.” Ms Buttrose said she knows people are sometimes reluctant to change, but this is a change for the better. “Opal is easy to use but I know some older people may be hesitant to change from paper tickets – I want to let them know that Opal really is very simple,” she said. “Once they’ve got their Gold Opal Card I think they’ll realise how convenient it is.” Ms Buttrose spent time mingling with local residents and discussing the Opal Card. Seniors and pensioners can apply online at opal.com.au, call 13 67 25 (13OPAL), or visit the Service NSW centre.
Tuesday Press gets the chop News Local has axed the long-running Tuesday edition of the Penrith Press newspaper. The final Tuesday edition of the paper was released in December, with News Local confirming that the Press will revert to one edition per week this year. “To bring you all the action in the region next year, the Penrith Press will move to a bumper Thursday edition…,” Editor Lisa Power wrote in the paper’s final Tuesday edition just before Christmas. The Press has run two editions a week for decades, with the Tuesday edition once the flagship of the local publication. In recent months, speculation has mounted that the Press would axe the Tuesday edition. This was all but confirmed when the Press moved its Friday publication to Thursdays a short time ago. The latest Circulations Audit Bureau figures show the Press has a circulation on Thursdays of 48,932. The Western Weekender has a circulation of 59,400 and the Penrith City Gazette has a circulation of 38,601. The now axed Tuesday edition of the Press has a weekly circulation of 48,912. In other news, the Weekender this week confirmed its popular Extra Time rugby league liftout would be returning this year, covering all the latest Penrith Panthers news and information. Advertising packages including corporate box tickets are now available. Call 4722 2998 to find out more details.

Christmas is gone, another couple of million bucks has been blown up in the sky via the New Year’s Eve fireworks and we’ve all made (and probably broken) our resolutions for 2016. Here’s my fearless predictions for what’s to come in the next 12 months. Labor to dump Bill Shorten Where there’s a will, there’s a way. Labor will find a way to get rid of Bill Shorten at some stage in the first few months of the year, most likely on the back of another disastrous Newspoll or two. The Opposition simply can’t win this year’s election with Mr Shorten at the helm of the party. While I think Tanya Plibersek is Labor’s best bet, I’d say they’ll go with Anthony Albanese to lead them into the election.

Penrith City Councillor
Marcus Cornish A better future
Turnbull and Scott record wins Malcolm Turnbull will win the Federal Election later this year, perhaps by a smaller margin than expected if Labor does move on Bill Shorten. Mr Turnbull’s popularity continues to hold firm and only a major scandal could change public perception quickly enough to swing the election. With Lindsay typically falling to the government of the day, Fiona Scott should retain the seat over Labor candidate Emma Husar. Stadium strategy changes The State Government will back down on plans to knock down and rebuild Allianz Stadium, instead deciding to upgrade the venue. Knocking down Allianz is the one part of the stadium strategy I just don’t get.

Consumer laws change In the wake of Dick Smith falling into administration and people with gift cards being left out in the cold, consumer laws will be changed to ensure there’s protection for card holders or those with lay-bys in the future. It’s simply outrageous that a business can continue to trade, but refuse gift card holders their right to purchase products. It needs to be changed and I think the uproar following the Dick Smith situation will be enough to get the conversation well and truly started. Same sex marriage debate to continue Same sex marriage will again make it on to the national agenda. While Australia will fall short of legalising same sex marriage in 2016, there will be firm plans announced to do so in either 2017 or 2018, which will ensure there’s no major conflict in an election year.

Panthers to make the Grand Final OK, so maybe I’m talking with a little bit of bias here, but I’m predicting the Panthers will reach this year’s NRL Grand Final – and fall just short on the big day. If Penrith stays fit, the backline of Matt Moylan, Josh Mansour, Dean Whare, Peta Hiku and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak is amongst the most exciting in the league. The addition of Trent Merrin to Penrith’s forward pack will add some extra muscle to the side, while new coach Anthony Griffin will bring fresh eyes to an old problem: how do you awaken the sleeping giant that is the Penrith Panthers? Wanderers win the Premier’s Plate The Wanderers will continue their solid form and do enough to claim this year’s Premier’s Plate. They’ll also make it through to the Grand Final and will finally take home the big prize on domestic football’s biggest day. A-League to enter crisis mode The problems confronting the A-League will continue after figures reveal that the Big Bash League has become Australia’s sport of choice over the summer. And here’s a fearless prediction for you: David Gallop will quit as CEO of Football Federation Australia before the year is done and dusted. Jess Fox to win gold in Rio Leonay superstar Jessica Fox goes one better than her silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics by winning gold on the water in Rio. Fox returns home as a household name with the Whitewater Stadium re-named in her honour.

Stephen Lynch has been announced as the Nick Xenophon Team’s (NXT) candidate to run against the two major parties for the seat of Lindsay in this year’s Federal Election. Last Saturday, Lynch and South Australian Senator and party founder, Nick Xenophon, met at the Nepean River to encourage Lindsay to take the NXT step. “I truly believe the NXT is the best party to represent the interests of Lindsay,” Mr Lynch said. “I’m the underdog, there’s no doubt about that. I’m going up against two large party machines with bucket loads of cash, but I’ve got to give the people of Lindsay a chance to have somebody who will look after their interests.” Mr Lynch believes he brings a fresh fight in the debate about a western Sydney airport that’s going ahead regardless of community resistance. “The two major parties want it. We just want to make sure we get a fair deal out of it – we don’t want to be left up Badgerys Creek without a paddle,” he said. “If the Sydney Airport Corporation

Penrith: Man caught trying to steal from variety store
Penrith: Teenager was driving without a licence
Staff from a variety store in Penrith were forced to contact the police this week after they caught a man allegedly stealing. At about 11.35pm on Monday, January 11, a 20-year-old male entered a variety store on Station Street in Penrith. After browsing through the items in the store, he selected a number of clothing pieces and allegedly went to leave the store. Staff managed to stop him. Police issued the man with a Criminal Infringement Notice for shoplifting.
A man will front court after he was found driving without a licence. At about 12pm on Saturday, January 9, police followed a vehicle along Andrews Road in Penrith before pulling it over. The occupant, a 19-year-old man, was asked by police if they could see his licence. It was found that he didn’t have one and he was arrested and charged for ‘drive without licence second plus offence’. The man, from Werrington, is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on January 29.
Penrith: Long list of charges after man’s drunken evening
Police issue warning to locals holding summer parties
A man has been charged with a range of offences after a number of incidents last weekend. The 34-year-old, from St Marys, attended a residence on Evan Street in Penrith on Saturday, January 9. After drinking alcohol for a number of hours, he was helped into bed from people at the party. At about 5.50am, people went to check on him when they found him allegedly in the process of stealing a TV. The man left the premises to go to his car when he allegedly tried to assault a female from the residence. He also allegedly got in his car, drove it into a parked car, and then collided with a telegraph pole. Police arrived on the scene and he was subjected to a breath test where he returned a positive reading.
Police are reminding the community during party season that if an un-invited guest arrives, to contact the police. “If they aren’t invited and they turn up, tell them to leave and if they don’t then contact the police before things get out of hand,” Detective Chief Inspector at Penrith Police Station, Grant Healey said. Police also encourage that your party be registered via the NSW Police website so they are aware that the event is happening. “It’s also your responsibility, if you’re the host of the party, to make sure no underage people are given alcohol,” Det Insp Healey said. Penrith Council also offer a party pack that provides information on how to have a safe party. The warning comes as the party season continues throughout summer.

Hospital rocked by double shooting • Police officer and security guard injured • Man charged • Counselling offered to staff and patients “I must have just missed the shooting by a few minutes because when I walked outside, there were already two police cars out the front with officers running in to the Emergency Department,” he told the Weekender. “After I saw that, more and more police cars kept turning up to the scene and about 15 minutes after that, all patients in the Emergency Department had been evacuated which is when I heard what had happened. “I saw a female police officer walk out of the room in tears and really shaken up and I also saw the police bring out the man, who was shouting constantly – it all happened very quickly.” Counselling has been offered to staff at Nepean Hospital. “Counselling and other assistance is being provided to staff and we are continuing to contact patients and visitors who were in the Emergency Department at the time,” a spokesperson said. “Our thoughts are with the injured and their families.” Senior Constable Warburton was listed in a serious but stable condition when the Weekender went to print on Wednesday. It was reported the accused offender may have had issues with the drug ‘ice’.

epean Hospital’s Emergency Department descended into chaos on Tuesday night when two men, including a police officer, were shot. An emergency call was made to police just before 10.30pm on Tuesday, following reports a man was allegedly threatening a female doctor with scissors in the Emergency Department. It’s understood the accused, a 39-yearold man, had been charged over a breakand-enter offence earlier that evening and was released on bail. He was at the hospital receiving medical treatment. “During a struggle, a police officer lost control of his firearm,” a police spokesperson said. “Subsequently, the police officer and a security guard were shot.” The police officer on the receiving end of the attack, who has been identified as Senior Constable Luke Warburton, suffered a gunshot wound to the upper leg, with the security guard suffering a gunshot wound to his calf, police said. The Weekender broke the story online shortly after 11pm on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the accused was charged

Acting Police Commissioner Catherine Burn told the media in the early hours of Wednesday morning that it was a traumatic incident for everyone involved.
“My thoughts are with every officer and those who responded to the call,” she said. St Marys resident, Shane Hodgson, was at the hospital at the time of the incident with his wife who was in the after hours clinic that is located directly next to the Emergency Department.

lass manufacturing company O-I Sydney, situated on Andrews Road in Penrith, is currently closed due to a fire that broke out at the premises last weekend. At about 4am on Saturday, January 9, a glass leak occurred from one of the furnaces at the business, which sparked a fire. “All relevant health and safety procedures were immediately followed and all employees were safely evacuated from the area,” a company spokesperson said. The team from Fire and Rescue NSW at Regentville were quick to respond to emergency calls, and were able to contain the fire shortly after their arrival. It’s still unknown when the factory will reopen for business. “Our engineering and technical experts have been onsite at Penrith since Saturday and are currently reviewing the scope of work required to safely recommence production at our Penrith site,” the spokesperson said. “Assessments of the other furnace are still ongoing and it is still too early to speculate on when this furnace will be fit for production.” There were no reported injuries.

olice have released CCTV images of two vehicles as the appeal for information relating to a kidnapping in St Clair continues. At about 9pm on Thursday, September 3 last year, a 32-year-old man was out the front of his home on Hassett Place in St Clair when two men forced him into a motor vehicle and drove from the scene. The next day, Friday, September 4, the man was located at 2.30am by police on Wolstenholme Avenue in Greendale. He was taken to Nepean Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Strike Force Batley was formed by St Marys LAC to investigate the incident. CCTV cameras in the area captured two vehicles, with police releasing the images last Wednesday, January 6. One vehicle is described as being a gold or bronze-coloured Commodore sedan bearing NSW registration plates and containing the letters ‘CCV’ or similar. The second vehicle is described as a white-coloured Ford Falcon sedan bearing stolen NSW registration plates that read ‘BJ8-4TS’.

The traffic switch and preparation work will be carried out from Friday 22 January 2016 until Monday 25 January 2016, weather permitting. Work will be carried out during standard construction hours (7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays). After the switch, all Gipps Street and Kent Road traffic will travel on the new lanes. Please keep to speed limits and follow the direction of traffic controllers and signs.

other than to appoint a voluntary administrator.” A pre-Christmas sale, described by many as a ‘suicide sale’, was held last month with sales and cash generation below what the company was hoping for. The first meeting with the creditors was held yesterday, Thursday, January 14. Dick Smith has had a presence in Penrith for several decades.

he future of local staff working at electronics giant Dick Smith is up in the air after the company entered administration last week. Dick Smith has a store in Westfield Penrith as well as a ‘Powerhouse’ store on Batt Street in Jamisontown. Both remain open at this stage but staff face a worrying time in relation to the future of their jobs. Advisory firm McGrathNicol was appointed as the company’s administrator by resolution of the directors last Monday, January 4. Subsequent to the appointment of McGrathNicol, James Stewart, Jim Sarantinos and Ryan Eagle of Ferrier Hodgson were appointed as Receivers and Managers of the company. Controversially, stores are currently not honouring gift cards despite continuing to trade. Dick Smith Chairman Rob Murray said there weren’t any options left when trying to avoid appointing a voluntary administrator. “The directors formed the view that any success in obtaining alternative funding would not have been sufficiently timely to support short-term funding require-

Penrith dances to the tune of tourism All the right moves: Sydney International Regatta Centre set to host major ballet event later this year DALE DRINKWATER
T
he Australian Ballet is coming to Penrith for a mesmerising outdoor performance, and it’s going to be free. Penrith Council will partner with the Australian Ballet in November to bring their annual Under the Stars performance to the Sydney International Regatta Centre (SIRC). With over 100 dance schools in the area already, Councillor Bernard Bratusa said the performance will bring something very special to Penrith. “It is a great investment and a great initiative. We will get exposure everywhere and will be the first regional city outside a capital city to host Under the Stars,” he said. “One of the priorities for Penrith Council is to promote arts and culture and I believe this ticks that box.” The annual event was held in Brisbane last year, and attracted over 8000 people to the area and reached an audience of over 2.7 million people. The opportunity for Penrith to host the event is expected to cement the region’s reputation as a leader in tourism and

events, in line with Council’s Adventure Capital campaign. Deputy Mayor Ross Fowler said as well as being a sporting city, Penrith is a city of culture, and this will show Australia the New West. “The New West means something that’s different all the time. This is something that will be different and it will enhance Penrith’s marketability,” he said. The free event will cost Council and the SIRC around $60,000 that will be provided in both cash and in-kind contributions. The Sydney International Regatta Centre is recommended to provide the venue at a reduced cost, and Council has secured a $25,000 sponsorship from JK Williams. Matt Adamson, Administration and Marketing Coordinator from the NSW Office of Sport, said the SIRC would be the perfect venue for the performance. “If SIRC was selected as the venue it would certainly showcase the diversity and scope of events that can be held at the venue,” he said. “There is a lot going for SIRC and events of this type, we have capacity for large scale events, easy access for coach transfers, ample parking and a beautiful setting overlooking the Blue Mountains and the Lakes.”

The weekly views of Penrith’s Mayor
50/50 Vision Welcome to the New Year! 2016 is already shaping up to be a big year and I’m proud to be working with the community, residents and businesses to achieve the best for our city. Penrith Council is hosting an education and training program, “Empowering Women in Local Government” for women who are considering standing for the next local government election, existing women councillors or those who are already working in the local government sector. The program is a unique learning opportunity developed by the Australian Local Government Women’s Association (ALGWA NSW) and the University of Technology Sydney, Centre for Local Government. ALGWA NSW has been the lead agency for advocacy on gender equity issues that include the representation of women in local government, gender balanced decisions and paid parental leave. The importance of gender equity in representing the community cannot be underestimated. Penrith Council’s own long term commitment to gender equity was recognised in 2010 in
receiving a bronze award in the 50:50 Vision – Councils for Gender Equity program which is a national accreditation program. Council’s Gender Equity Steering Committee developed an Action Plan that outlined 16 actions under four themes – leadership; nomination and recruitment; remuneration, recognition and training and work and family balance. The Steering Committee is overseeing the actions and also working towards silver accreditation in the 50:50 Vision program. Council’s commitment to gender equity is also supported by a 50:50 Vision Project Team that co-ordinates events including a financial literacy for women seminar, power skills session and morning teas for staff on parental leave. I am delighted that Penrith City Council is taking a lead role in gender equity across its workforce and elected representatives. I encourage all businesses and organisations to have similar gender equity goals. Further course information can be found at algwa.org.au.

A fire tore through Sydney Suspension last week. Photo: Top Notch Video JADE ALIPRANDI
he operators of Sydney Suspension in Coreen Avenue, Penrith have vowed to bounce back after a fire tore through the premises late last week. Just before 2pm last Wednesday, January 6, owner of the business, Dean Fitzpatrick, noticed a cloud of smoke coming from the top level of the workshop. Within one minute and 40 seconds, based on footage from surveillance cameras, Mr Fitzpatrick and the team at Sydney Suspension were able to get customers’ cars out of the premises and remove all flammable bottles. It’s believed the fire originated in an upstairs room the team call the “communications box” where all the computers and major cables were located, after a
T
team of contractors had not long left the area. “Shortly after the contractors left, we had an inferno,” Mr Fitzpatrick said. “Everyone remained really calm and did so well at getting all the cars out, the gas bottles, and themselves, resulting in no injuries or damage to customers’ cars.” Mr Fitzpatrick and his wife Kylie plan to be back on track within five to 10 business days. “If we can clean the area up here, we would prefer to stay but if we do relocate, it will be in very close proximity to where we are now,” Mr Fitzpatrick said. It isn’t yet known what caused the fire with investigations currently being carried out. The team are already quoting and selling parts in a pop-up office, and are looking at other buildings to lease. Customers can call 4721 2112.

Maths result adds up well for Rowan Students prepare for next chapter of their lives following official release of final school exam results JADE ALIPRANDI
fter sitting for their HSC exams just over three months ago, students from around the Penrith area are still overjoyed about their final results. One major achievement came for a Year 11 student from Penrith Anglican College, Rowan Faint, who managed to come equal first in the state for what some consider to be one of the hardest subjects on offer, Mathematics. “I was really surprised and happy when I got the call from the Board of Studies saying I came equal first in the state for Mathematics, as I expected to do well in the subject, but I didn’t think I would come first,” he said. “After I got the news, I really wanted to tell everyone about it, but unfortunately I had to keep it a secret for a few days until the first in course ceremony.” Rowan was part of the college’s acceleration program and managed to score a band 6 in Extension 1 Mathematics. “I have always liked Mathematics and have done well in it,” he said. “I enjoy problem solving, working with numbers and I also like how in Mathematics, unlike other subjects such as English,

there is only one correct answer and not a range of answers that may be considered correct.” More success came for Penrith Anglican College when student Jessica Gooch was part of only 81 students out of over 11,000 in the world to receive a perfect score of 45 in the 2015 International Baccalaureate (IB) results, released last week, translating to an ATAR of 99.95. Out of the 16 Penrith Anglican College students sitting the IB in 2015, 11 scored an ATAR of over 90. St Paul’s Grammar School in Penrith also received some good news last week with the dux of the school, Xiatong WU (Max) receiving 44 out of a possible 45 for his IB, translating to an ATAR of 99.85. 17 students from the school managed to achieve IB scores of 37 or above, equating to ATAR’s above 95. Incoming Principal Ian Wake, who began his first day at St Paul’s with the news of these results, congratulated students, families and the staff of St Paul’s, noting that these outstanding results come from collective efforts. The official HSC certificates are due to arrive by post from January 20, but this year, most students received their results by phone or the Internet.

Radio upgrades have the WOW factor New studio part of major overhaul for one of Penrith’s oldest community radio stations NATHAN TAYLOR
isteners now have the benefit of clearer sound and better reach after long-time Penrith community radio station WOW FM recently conducted a range of technical upgrades to bring it into the future. Located in Queen Street, St Marys, WOW FM 100.7 has been entertaining the Nepean and lower Blue Mountains areas for more than 25 years with a range of music and community-based shows. But after nearly three decades without a full technical upgrade, the station decided it was time for an overhaul. Speaking with the Weekender, WOW FM Marketing Manager, Warren McCarroll, said the station has virtually been re-built from scratch. “WOW FM was overdue for a good technical upgrade, so we decided if we were going to do it, we were going to do it properly,” he said. “We’ve brought the station into the new digital age with upgraded studio facilities, complete new panels, a new digital antenna and brand new website.” Local listeners as well as people from all
L
over Australia and the world will now be able hear WOW FM better than ever after the station’s Internet streaming service also received an upgrade. “The listener will have clearer, better reception for all our programs and we’ve also extended our listening audience,” Mr McCarroll said. The upgrades weren’t cheap but without them, WOW FM risked not being able to continue broadcasting its popular content and shows. “The upgrades did come at a great cost but you either do it or you fall behind and we were falling behind, so we decided to spend the money and upgrade,” he said. Along with the various station improvements, WOW FM have also pumped a number of dollars into building a brand new website. “Our old site was well and truly out of date and tacky, so we had a professional webmaster build a new website for us,” Mr McCarroll said. “Along with our program schedule and streaming service, you’ll also find the latest local news from the Western Weekender plus music news and more.” Visit www.wowfm1007.com.au or tune your radio to 100.7 to listen now.

Dedicated local turns 100
Laughter, good wine and travel are the secrets to her success Local resident Leila Schubach celebrated a special milestone yesterday when she turned 100. Ms Schubach has been largely involved with the Penrith community for many years, dating back to 1939 when Schubach’s Newsagency in High Street, Penrith was first opened. The youngest of five children, Ms Schubach was also involved with Leonay and Penrith Golf Clubs, Penrith Leagues Club, and the Penrith Country Women’s Association where she served as Secretary and later, as President. Currently residing at Mountain View Penrith, Ms Schubach says the secret is to keep active. “Be involved, have interests and hobbies, and keep active by getting out and doing things,” she said. One of Ms Schubach’s grand children, Narah Schubach, said her grandmother is a funny woman. “Gran is the person you hope to be seated next to at a dinner because she always has interesting stories to tell, will make you laugh and continue with the added challenge of trying to match her champagne for champagne,” she said. Leila Schubach says never forget to laugh. “Travel, enjoy good food and wine, and don’t forget to laugh... a lot,” she said. Happy birthday Leila!

T realities of running The your own business yo

W
hen I talk to people about my business, I am often likely to say that I love ‘being my own boss’. It might give people the impression that running a business is all about having ultimate power, the ability to set your own hours and the luxury of choosing the tasks you work on. While all those things can be true to varying degrees, it would be remiss not to also mention the realities. Business owners need to be in possession of a number of traits in order to have a successful business. Above all, they need to believe in the business despite the odds of success appearing otherwise. Every business is a risk but it is your unwavering determination to believe that it will succeed that is needed to keep it moving forward. Another important trait is the ability to take charge. There is no-one else to give the orders: when you see something needs to be done, you need to go and do it, rather than wasting time waiting for
someone to instruct you. The reality of being a business owner is that you need to be a good communicator with those you work with. If you can’t explain to them the ideas in your head and articulate them well, your employees and contractors won’t catch your vision. And progress will be limited. And lastly, always expect to learn. You will need to continue to grow with your business and be willing to change and expand your skills. You will never be the expert on every area in your business, so be willing to be humble, educate yourself and use experts when you don’t know the answer. The bottom line reality for running a business is that you need to enter into it with eyes wide open: while most business owners will tell you how passionate they are about their enterprise, you should also be aware that behind the ‘gloss’ is a great deal of blood, sweat and tears. Are you your own boss? Share your thoughts via Twitter @wwpenrith.

L
et’s get straight into some social media trends to include in your plans this year. Throughout December 2015, Facebook had 14,000,000 active Australian users. It is by far the beast of Australian and the world’s social media usage. YouTube had 13,900,000 unique Australian visitors, WordPress.com had 5,700,000, and Instagram 5,000,000 monthly active Australian Users. These were followed by LinkedIn 3,700,000 (keep in mind the target of professionals), Twitter 2,800,000, TripAdvisor 2,200,000 and Snapchat had approximately 2,000,000 monthly active Australians. Those numbers should be used to make decisions on which social media platforms you focus on in marketing your business. Go where the people are of course. You should also take note of which platforms suit your business best. Some trends or new methods of social media marketing that I have been helping clients implement are: Live social broadcasts: Social media allows for communication between
brands and customers, but live stream goes a step further, revealing a much more authentic side of your business. It’s unedited, unfiltered and shows that you’re not just reading off of a cue card. This is thanks to apps like Periscope, Meerkat and Facebook even has its own live broadcast function making this method a strategy to explore for 2016. Inbound messaging is real social customer service: Businesses are receiving many more inbound messages these days, but many still haven’t figured out a game plan for answering them. It is said that approximately 80 per cent of inbound messages go without a response. Consider this a part of your customer service now and if an inexperienced staff member is looking after your social media presence, help them. Mobile First: What was once considered a bonus is now a necessity. If you’re not thinking mobile first, then you’re already behind. SEO: Content is still king. Greater social interaction (such as people sharing your content and sending more traffic to your website) can help you rank higher.

HISTORY
Turning back Time
COMPILED BY DALE DRINKWATER

SPECIALISING IN
The front page of the January 9, 2015 edition of the Weekender set the bar high for Council throughout the year. Former Mayor Ross Fowler outlined Council’s plans to reshape Penrith to withstand growth in “the heart of the new west”. Council committed to seek funding from the New South Wales Government to provide services and infrastructure that were considered beyond Council’s funding capabilities. To alleviate ongoing issues, Council wished to provide more car parks to free up space and prepare for future economic and cultural development across the city. Penrith Lakes, western Sydney’s equivalent to Barangaroo, was also a focus in the 2015 plan to develop on and provide recreational facilities in the area. Recreation was key to Council’s plan, and the Nepean River was promised a playground, a water’s edge amphitheatre, cafes and new paths. Council said work for a pedestrian bridge across the river would commence in 2015, and road and rail infrastructure upgrades would begin ahead of the western Sydney airport.
Water park was loved by locals
A
forced closure left an empty shell of what it was, but after over a decade of entertaining Sydney, the memory of Cables Waterski Park will never be forgotten. From March 1988, the lakes behind the Panthers Leagues Club were filled with skiers and swimmers, who travelled from near and far to enjoy Penrith’s very own water park. Cables Waterski Park, located inside Cables Fun Park, provided Penrith with its yearly summer tourism boost and, for almost 14 years, was one of Sydney’s best
known tourism destinations with water slides, swimming pools and skiing. Throughout the 1990s the park was thriving with countless visitors, but it was never enough to sustain it. In October 2002, unable to balance the increasing cost of public liability insurance and profitability, the ski park shut down. The Weekender walked through the abandoned ski park after six years of it sitting there unused, overgrown and waiting for its future to be decided. In 2008, its famous green and yellow water slides, that entertained so many families, still remained as did the once busy kiosk and surf shop.
Around the park, signs that instructed skiers and water-goers of rules and regulations were still standing, the only thing missing were the people and the laughter. After lengthy discussions between Panthers and Penrith Council, the ski park’s comeback came in the form of a wakeboarding facility, Cables Wake Park. The new Cables Wake Park reopened on November 27, 2009, and under new ownership, Manager Tor Young said the original cables were taken down. “When it was shut down, all the original cables were taken down and shipped to a cable park named Liquid Leisure in the UK,” she said.
Swimming hot spot The concrete weir in the Nepean River remained a popular swimming spot after it ceased supplying water to Penrith in the mid 1960s. This photo taken in 1986 shows how the spot seemed like a safe place to swim, but in fact caused many deaths.

ENTERTAINMENT PENRITH’S BIGGEST AND BEST LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
A huge year of quality events KATE REID
W
hile we often think of Sydney as the go-to place for entertainment, there’s plenty happening right here in our own backyard. Whether you’re a music fanatic, a theatre buff or just looking for a fun night out with mates, this year’s local entertainment program has something for everyone. Kicking off the year at The Joan is ‘The Divine Miss Bette’ (pictured), which has enjoyed sell-out seasons across the country. At the head of the production is Catherine Alcorn, who was trained by Steve Ostrow, the man who first discovered the
talented songstress Bette Midler. Catherine will be backed by a five piece band as she belts out classic hits like ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ and ‘Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy’. In February children’s entertainers Hi-5 will be heading to the Evan Theatre with their new show ‘Hi-5 Songfest’. The little ones will have the chance to sing and dance along to Hi-5 hits like ‘L.O.V.E’ and ‘It’s a Party’. At Rooty Hill RSL, award winning actor and singer John Waters will be back with his hit show ‘Lennon: Looking Through a Glass Onion’. Part spoken word, part concert, the show takes audiences through the life and music of one of history’s most iconic artists. Come March the Evan Theatre will welcome Ted E. Bare and Chuck Wood to the stage for Strassman’s ‘iTedE’.
Audiences will be rolling in the aisles laughing with this Aussie favourite and his cast of colourful puppet characters. Following on from the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in February, The Joan will be running their very own Mini Gras in March. The night will feature two new works, giving young members of LGBTQI community the chance to get involved in a fun theatre project. March will also see country music favourite Adam Brand heading back to the Rooty Hill RSL with his country supergroup Adam Brand & The Outlaws, which features Drew McAlister, Matt Cornell, Travis Collins and Mike Carr. Over at the Evan Theatre things will be getting a little steamy with the most well known male revue in the world, Manpower Australia taking to the stage mid March.
This will be your chance to see why audiences across the globe have fallen in love with this hot Aussie production. ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ winners and crowd favourites Justice Crew will also be heading to the Evan Theatre in April to get the party started. The group will performing all their hits, including ‘Que Sera’ and ‘Best Night’, and will give audiences a sneak peek at some of their new material. May will be the month of laughs with the Sydney Comedy Festival Showcase at the Evan Theatre and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow at The Joan. These shows will feature some of the best Australian and international comedians the festivals have to offer. 2016 is set to be another big year for entertainment. What do you want to see most?

fter the success of their debut production in 2015, independent opera company Operantics will return this January with an exciting double bill at the Independent Theatre in North Sydney. At the head of the company is founder, artistic director and producer Katie Miller-Crispe who hails from Penrith. The talented young opera evangelist will take on the role of director and producer for the company’s latest production, which includes two charming English operas, ‘Gentleman’s Island’ and ‘The Telephone’. ‘Gentleman’s Island’ tells the story of two very British gentlemen with exceptional manners who find themselves
in a bit of a pickle when they become shipwrecked but can’t talk to each other because they haven’t been formally introduced. ‘The Telephone’ is a comedic tale that sees Ben trying to ask his girlfriend Lucy for her hand in marriage, only to be constantly interrupted by her telephone. If you’re an opera aficionado and love good storytelling then head into the city to see the work of this talented young cast. Gentleman’s Island & The Telephone will be on at the Independent Theatre in North Sydney on Saturday, January 23 at 7pm and Sunday, January 24 at 2.30pm. Tickets are $25-$40. hen you think of weeds you probably don’t think of food. But this January Sydney based artist and environmental educator Diego Bonetto will change all that when he leads an edible weeds workshop in the grounds of the Penrith Regional Gallery. Affectionately known as the Weedy One, Diego has a passion for wild food and forgotten natural resources. “It is my art, I am a storyteller, and what I offer is a new way to look at the landscape,” Diego said. “I don’t even need to paint it anew; I just need to show you a different way to
look at it.” This educational walking tour will take participants through the gallery garden as they discover edible and medicinal plants and learn more about how these weeds have been used throughout history. Whether you’re a green thumb, or just curious about the world around you, this tour will have you looking at the humble weed in a whole new light. Don’t miss it! The Edible Weed workshop will be on at the Penrith Regional Gallery on Sunday, January 24 at 10am and will run for 2-3 hours. Tickets are $25. Bookings are essential. Penrith is a City with a rich and colourful history. Visitors can see, learn about and experience this for themselves as they travel along the Penrith Heritage Drive in the comfort of their car. The Penrith Heritage Drive is approximately 50kms in length and takes in some of the oldest buildings, structures and locations in St Marys, Penrith, Castlereagh, Emu Plains and Mulgoa. There are 27 sites to visit, some are well-known such as the Victoria Bridge, but others including Mamre House are hidden historical gems. All sites help to shine a light on the people, places and events which have shaped Penrith into the City it is today. Penrith City Mayor, Councillor Karen McKeown said the Penrith Heritage Drive is a great way to learn about the history of Penrith and it’s a fantastic way for visitors to see the City. “As you travel between sites you will be taken through the CBD, urban and rural areas and alongside the majestic Nepean River with the spectacular Blue Mountains in the backdrop,” Cr McKeown said. You can download a copy of the Penrith Heritage Drive map from www.visitpenrith.com.au or you can pick up a copy from the Penrith Civic Centre.
Ê ‘Game of Thrones’ was officially the most pirated show of 2015, according to website TorrentFreak. At 14.4 million downloads, it was easily the most illegally downloaded show for the fourth straight year. Coming in second place was ‘The Walking Dead’ with 6.9 million, ‘The Big Bang Theory’ with 4.4 million and ‘Arrow’ with 3.9 million downloads. Naughty, naughty people! Ê Remember ‘Chateau Kath’. the fictional Fountain Lakes home used in the series ‘Kath and Kim’? Well it’s officially up for sale. The home is actually located in Patterson Lakes in Melbourne and boasts four bedrooms, two living areas and spectacular water front views. The median house price in the area is $780,000. If sold, expect Kel to treat Kath to beautiful dinner at Fountain Gate. Ê Plus7 is now available on the new Apple TV. No word yet whether the popular Channel Seven catch-up service will be made available
on older versions of Apple TV, but it really should, considering TenPlay and other popular streaming services are available on there.
Ê Channel Nine’s new series of ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ will premiere on Monday, February 1. Channel Seven will launch ‘My Kitchen Rules’ that same night while ‘I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here’ begins January 31. Ê Still on ‘I’m Celebrity’, and speculation is rife as to which celebs will make their way into the jungle this year. Former cricketer Mark Waugh is one name touted for next month’s series. Other rumoured celebs include Jane Hall, Denise Drysdale, Ian Roberts, Anthony Koutoufides, Ben Cousins, Justin Melvey, Fiona O’Laughlin, Didier Cohen and the Stafford Brothers. All will be revealed on the premiere episode. Ê Talk about laziness. Channel Nine has announced that Ricky Martin will be replaced by Ronan Keating on this year’s series of ‘The Voice’. This is bit of a lazy choice for me considering Ronan was a long time member of another popular Aussie singing show in ‘The X Factor’. Surely there was someone else out there!

PENRITH’S MOST RESPECTED LINE-UP OF EXPERTS ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
This week, the Mars/Neptune trine heightens creativity and deepens compassion. So it’s the perfect time to express yourself or help someone in need. On the weekend, the fiery Full Moon and Jupiter are an impulsive combination. You’re in a spontaneous mood but remember – it takes a short time to burn bridges, and a lot longer to mend them. Charlotte Bronte: “Look twice before you leap.”

HOROSCOPES
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
The focus is on travel, education or international connections as you confirm plans or set goals for the future. A loved one wants to hurry you up, but it’s best for Bulls to keep cruising along at your own preferred pace. You’ve got so much on your to-do list that the last thing you need is a domestic drama but that’s what you’ll get on the weekend, as the Full Moon heats up your home zone. So tread carefully Taurus.
GEMINI
MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
Communication is the buzz word this week but make sure you consider the consequences of what you say as you mix and mingle; converse and chat; text and tweet. Powerful Pluto helps focus your mind but Uranus increases your inclination to put your foot firmly in your mouth! The Full Moon sees gung-ho Geminis being busy all over the place. Short trips are highlighted as you plan a holiday or pack your bags for a getaway.

Are you stuck in a career rut? If you resist changes at work, then you’ll be left behind in the dust. Look for exciting ways to inject fresh ideas into your professional life – but make sure you consult with loved ones and include them in your plans. Cash-strapped Crabs – avoid going on a spending spree or lending money to others, as you’re liable to make decisions based purely on your emotions.
LEO
SAGITTARIUS
JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
Uranus unsettles your gypsy gene this week, as work and travel seem to be an incompatible mix. Be patient – your time in the Sun will come. Attached Lions – strive to get the balance right between personal projects and cosy companionship. Singles – long-term love is likely with someone who has an adventurous and avant-garde spirit. The fiery weekend Full Moon in your sign boosts your Cat confidence, charisma and chutzpah!
VIRGO
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
Life at planet Virgo can resemble being in the army, as your days are organised with military precision and you squeeze every last drop out of the time available. But you’ll need to be much more flexible this week as Jupiter, Uranus and the Full Moon toss your timetable out the window and shake up your usual routine. Your motto is from A. A. Milne, “You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”
LIBRA
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
This week the Sun, Venus and Jupiter all encourage you to channel your inner hedonist as you eat, drink, socialise, entertain, love – and live life to the Libran max. And with Venus shifting into your home zone, plan to host a dinner or party sometime soon, where you can play the gracious host or hostess. The weekend Full Moon activates your hopes, dreams and wishes zone so it’s the perfect time to set or re-visit goals for 2016.
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
Obsessive thoughts and manipulative behaviour will get you nowhere fast. Subconscious forces are driving you, so avoid making decisions that you’ll later regret. The weekend Full Moon sees you at your Scorpio best as you swing between being sexy and secretive; and being passionate and possessive. You may also be thrust into the public spotlight, so make sure you’re putting on a show.

CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
This week the fiery Full Moon shines the spotlight on lust and loot. An intimate relationship could soar spectacularly – or crash and burn. All business transactions must be examined carefully, and a joint financial venture may cause some stressful moments as you strive for a mutually satisfying agreement. Venus visits your sign so prepare to be the most charismatic Capricorn you can be, as you plan to call in a few old favours.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Many Aquarians are rebels at heart [like James Dean, Yoko Ono and Bob Marley] but remember there’s a fine line between being rebellious and just plain reckless. You’re impatient to shake up your life [especially involving travel, education or your social media profile] but think things through and don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater! Thomas Edison: “Good fortune often happens when opportunity meets with preparation.”
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
In 2016, task-master Saturn continues to stall work plans and raise your frustration levels. Be patient Pisces! Struggling from caterpillar to butterfly can be daunting but you’re slowly getting there. Red planet Mars gives you a warm and welcome boost on Monday, when your charm factor shifts into top gear. The weekend Full Moon focuses on your fitness levels.

Sagittarians are the zodiac’s masters of excess. Moderation and common sense certainly go out the window this week as you socialise up a storm, spend too much, overdo just about everything, and make a multitude of mistakes. But you’ll have a lot of fun along the way. Study, education, travel and friendships are also favoured. Your motto for the next seven days is from the poet Lord Byron: “Always laugh when you can. It is cheap medicine.”

PET HEALTH
How did your dog cope with the fireworks on New Year’s Eve? A fear of fireworks is a fairly common phobia in dogs and may also mean that your dog could have other noise phobias. Dogs often find the unpredictable noise and display of lights very frightening. Even a dog that is very relaxed and not scared of thunder can become very stressed and scared during fireworks. Fireworks are closer to the ground than thunder and are accompanied by sudden booms, flashes and burning smells. This can trigger all of a dog’s senses
Dogs and fireworks: Not a great mix
Practice owner of Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic and the Western Sydney Cat Hospital
and make them anxious and afraid. Luckily there are a few things you can do to help keep your dog calm during fireworks. Prevention is always better than cure. The best way to prepare your dog for fireworks is to try and make them comfortable with the sound in advance. This is referred to as desensitisation and is very effective although it does take
some time and commitment from the owners. This involves finding a video or recording of fireworks and playing it at the lowest possible volume. While this is happening, give your dog lots of attention and treats so they learn to associate fireworks with a positive experience. A treat should follow each firework sound on the recording, so the sound is the cue for a reward. Over weeks to months, slowly begin to raise the volume of the recording. Repeat this several times a day until your dog can hear the sounds at a high volume without becoming fearful. Also play these sounds at dinner time, so the firework noises will be like a bell ringing for dinner and give a happy/excited emotional response, rather than fear. If your pet has already developed anxiety, then the use of medication to help them cope with their firework phobia is also beneficial. For long term success, medications should be used in conjunction with desensitisation. Medications alone rarely “fix” the fear. Your veterinarian can prescribe anti-anxiety and sedative medication to help keep your pet calm. These medications need to be used at least 1-2 hours before the fireworks are expected.

RELIGION
Are they worth it or are they simply something that people make for fun? While some people might not take New Year’s resolutions seriously, behind each resolution there is often a frustration and a desire to get life right. Many people are looking for new directions in life. They want to change the way they are living, but where do you look for new directions? Where do you look for a life that is real and satisfying? A life that can be counted on to give meaning and fulfilment? The last book of the Bible, Revelation, contains an
Making everything new again extraordinary promise for anyone who would commit their life to the God who is
there by following His Son, Jesus; “Now the dwelling of God is with men and he will live them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” This glorious promise of making everything new, of removing the old order of things, points to two truths. Firstly, it is a promise of the confident hope and joy of heaven. Secondly, it is promise, testified too by the experience of Christian people throughout the centuries, of the transformation that Jesus can bring to your life as you trust him day by day. Happy New Year and may you know the new life that Jesus brings.

Most drowning deaths occur in the summer months, with January being the worst month overall, and Saturdays and afternoons were the most common times for drowning to take place. 80 per cent of drowning deaths were male, and the highest percentage of cases occurred in NSW. or other associated bar can permit the entry of new patrons after 1.30am (note that small bars, most restaurants and tourist accommodation establishments are exempt). A venue with a current licence to stay open after 3am can continue to do so but cannot serve alcohol. Troublemakers can be banned from consuming alcohol for a period of 48 hours. Interestingly, while alcoholrelated assaults have fallen in and around the Kings Cross and other exclusion areas, there has in fact been an increase in the occurrences of alcohol-fuelled violence in areas like Pyrmont which falls just outside the lock-out zone in Sydney. This begs the question, have the lock-out laws simply moved the problem from one place to another? While the writer would argue that laws such as these act as a punishment to law-abiding partygoers, there is no question that if you remove partygoers from places with high occurrences of alcohol-fuelled violence there is less chance for thugs to attack innocent people. Unfortunately this is perhaps at the expense of the majority of the population who enjoy Sydney’s nightlife without incident. Food for thought.
While the festive season has brought with it celebration as is usually the case, we have also seen reports in the media of an increase of alcoholfuelled violence over the silly season. Across the country innocent revellers are still falling victim to what has become known as the “coward punch”, an act of cowardice that became so prevalent in Sydney in the past few years that the State Government introduced alcohol lock-out laws as a way of curbing what they perceive to be an epidemic of alcoholfuelled violence.
Are lock-out laws really the answer?

and every case is so much more than a statistic, representing a very personal story that will have caused great sorrow for family, friends and communities of the person lost to drowning. Factors including lack of supervision, inadequate pool barriers, intoxication, swimming outside the flags, watercraft accidents, and swimming alone can all contribute to these alarming statistics. So what do we do when an accident happens? Being prepared makes a huge difference, as every second counts following an immersion incident. If you haven’t already done so, why not enrol yourself in a Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course so you are prepared in case of an emergency. CPR accreditation is current for a year, at which point it is a good idea to revise and refresh your skills. So let’s look after each other this January, and not relax too much around the water at any time of year.
Despite our very best efforts to stay safe around the water, we have this week been tragically reminded that lives are still lost to drowning. Children under five are the age group that is most at risk of drowning and the majority occur in and around the home – commonly in home pools. The Royal Life Saving Society’s 2015 report shows that a total of 271 Australian lives were lost between 1 July 2014 and 30 June 2015, with a 30 per cent increase in the number of young children who had died due

Welcome back readers, I hope you all had a lovely couple of weeks enjoying good food with family and friends. I’d also like to welcome you to 2016, which the United Nations has declared the International Year of Pulses (or legumes as they are often referred to as). The aim of the International Year of Pulses is to raise the profile of pulses/ legumes, which includes beans, lentils and chickpeas, and promote their benefits. Though often thought of as food reserved mainly for
kate.reid@ westernweekender. com.au @kate_reid6
vegetarians and vegans, legumes offer numerous benefits no matter what diet you follow. They are a great source of protein, fibre, B-group vitamins, calcium, iron, magnesium and zinc. Personally I have a sort of love/hate relationship with legumes, and I’m sure I’m not alone. Fortunately this hasn’t
stopped me eating them, it just means I have to be a little more creative with how I include them in my diet. Whether you’re a legume lover, or a bit ambivalent like myself, there’s plenty of ways to increase your legume intake. Beans or lentils work well when added to your favourite pasta dishes, soups, stews or casseroles. If you love Mexican cuisine, beans make a great addition to tacos, nachos or burritos, or for burger lovers lentils and chickpeas make a great veggie patty. Legumes also form the basis of some delicious foods like falafel and hummus, which together with salad make a delicious wrap. Of course there’s always the humble baked bean, which is a nutritious breakfast option when paired with wholegrain toast. One of my favourite ways to eat legumes is by snacking on chicknuts, which are tasty little oven roasted chickpeas. They have a crunchy texture and can be purchased lightly salted or in a variety of different flavours. Include a couple of delicious legume based meals into your diet each week and make 2016 the year you reap the rewards of these little nutritional powerhouses.

Huge year makes Kia a key player AL PALMER’S REPAIRS PENRITH P/L TRADING AS
massive 20 per cent jump in sales has launched Kia Motors Australia into record territory, finishing 2015 with 33,736 cars finding new homes. In a record Australian market of 1.15 million new car sales, Kia has eclipsed the company’s previous best performance of 30,758 in 2012. “This is an outstanding result, and a testament to a year of hard work and focus from our entire organisation,” KMAu Chief Operating Officer, Damien Meredith said. “Brilliant product, an industry-leading 7-Year Warranty, rapidly improving customer and dealer satisfaction have all contributed to the pleasing outcome.” Mr Meredith pointed to the breadth of sales across Kia’s range of models as one of the keys to the growth of the brand. “Kia is no longer a one or two-car company… the wider range of models that are growing sales is a clear indication of the improved perception of Kia’s style, engineering and value by the new car shopper,” he said. The top selling Kia model last year was the Cerato small sedan with 10,392 sales. Second on the popularity list was the Sportage compact SUV with 7578 sales, followed by the Rio with 7096. Carnival regained dominance of the people mover segment with 3638 sales and a slew of awards pushed the Sorento large SUV numbers up to 3202.

NATHAN TAYLOR
fter taking the world by storm thanks to hit movies like ‘Bring It On’, competitive cheerleading is now one of the fastest growing sports in Australia with more than 10,000 people competing nationally last year. To cash in on the sport’s popularity, Glenmore Park mother of four and former cheerleader herself, Amanda Blok, has opened her very own cheerleading gym right here in Penrith. Penrith’s first cheerleading gym, Liberty Allstars, will start its first classes on February 1.
A
Having previously worked at a dance studio in the Blue Mountains that taught competitive cheerleading, Ms Blok said there was nothing in Penrith that offered the sport. “There was nothing in the local area that solely considered cheerleading as a sport,” she said. “Liberty Allstars opened strictly as an all-star cheerleading facility. It’s highly competitive but we also have recreational teams.” Ms Blok said all funding for the gym went straight to purchasing the proper equipment needed for cheerleading. “We don’t do any external dance like tap or jazz, it’s solely cheerleading,” she said.
After starting out as a dancer, Ms Blok got involved with cheerleading through a high school exchange program to the US where she lived with the cheer captain of her school. From there, she returned to Australia and cheered for Penrith’s local gridiron team for a number of years before honing her skills with some of the biggest names in the industry. Liberty Allstars caters to people of all ages and have a number of classes on offer including the Mummy/Daddy and Me class for walkers, competitive classes for kids aged five and above and even adult recreation cheer fitness classes for people who just want to have fun.
“We also participate in several competitions throughout the year, ending with the Nationals on the Gold Coast,” Ms Blok said. “It’s one of the fastest growing sports in the country, it gets bigger each and every year.” To see what all the fuss is about, Liberty Allstars will run a free trial class this Saturday, January 16 at 1/11 Robertson Place, Jamisontown. All locals are invited to attend. “Our free trial class is open to everyone from boys and girls, experienced to beginners,” Ms Blok said. For more info, visit the Liberty Allstars Facebook page or call 0430 011 526.

Local teen set to represent Australia
Slalom
Fox makes it count in Tassie 21-year-old wins C1 final and produces solid form as Olympics get closer NATHAN TAYLOR
Emily Imber. Photo: Megan Dunn Story continued from » p. 48 Emily was chosen by the NSW Ice Skating Association to represent her state at the 2015 Australian Figure Skating Championships, held at the Penrith Ice Palace. While Emily finished a disappointing sixth in the Nationals, the result didn’t stop her from being eligible to gain Australian selection for international competition this year. Emily will compete in the Novice Ladies division when the FBMA Trophy gets underway in Abu Dhabi on January 22. While every athlete is hopeful of a podium finish, the Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School student just wants to complete her program mistakefree. “I would be happy if I can do a clean program and get a personal best,” she said. “I’m really excited about skating but I’m actually excited about going over to Abu Dhabi because I haven’t really been on a long plane flight before.” Emily will jet off to compete in the Middle East this Tuesday.
essica Fox has kicked off the Olympic year in style by winning the women’s C1 final and finishing runner-up in the K1 decider at the Australian Slalom Championships in Tasmania last week. The 21-year-old local paddler demonstrated why she is the current C1 women’s world champion with a dominant display in the final. Despite picking up a two-second penalty for a gate touch, the Leonay resident recorded a time of 96.47 to finish 3.17 seconds ahead of Hobart’s Kate Eckhardt. Defending champion Rosalyn Lawrence finished third. “I didn’t have a good race in the C1 last year so it was good to come back this year and put together a good C1 run in the final,” Fox said. However, not everything went according to plan for Fox with rival Rosalyn Lawrence producing a sizzling run in the women’s K1 final to upstage the London Olympic silver medallist the following day.

Jessica Fox. File photo Lawrence dominated the final, producing a time of 86.75 to finish 2.34 seconds ahead of Fox. Younger sister Noemie Fox also produced a clean run to finish third in 92.12, 0.24 seconds ahead of Eckhardt. The result means Lawrence is a strong contender to rival Fox for the K1 women’s berth in Rio later this year, with last week’s result giving her the confidence she needs heading into the selection
trials next month. “It is nice to know that I can keep the nerves under control and do what I can do but there is a lot of hard work to come between now and selection, and it is going to come down to the day to see what happens,” Lawrence said. The fight for selection will begin at the Australian Open from February 5-7 with the Oceania Championships to follow from February 19-21.

CRICKET: Penrith’s first grade cricket side have defeated Western Suburbs in Round 9 of the Sydney Grade Cricket competition. Playing in a One Day match at Howell Oval, Penrith batted first scoring 9/211 after 50 overs. Penrith’s Tom Kohler-Cadmore was best with the bat with 47. When Western Suburbs hit the crease, they only managed 174 before being bowled out by Penrith after 46.1 overs. Matt Halse was best with the ball for Penrith with 3/30. The third-placed Penrith will battle the ninth-placed Fairfield-Liverpool in a two day match beginning this Saturday at Rosedale Oval. BASEBALL: The Penrith Panthers first grade side will take on Macarthur this Sunday in Round 15 of the NSW State Baseball League competition. Penrith returned to action for the first time after the Christmas break when they battled Central Coast last Wednesday night. FOOTBALL: A brilliant late goal by Melbourne City last Saturday night has seen Western Sydney’s unbeaten run of 10 A-League matches come to an end. With the scores locked at 2-2, the Wanderers looked like they completed a remarkable comeback when a quickly taken free-kick ended up in the back of the net. However referee Jarred Gillett called the play back as he’d not allowed Melbourne
defender Patrick Kisnorbo enough time to get back in position after conferring with the City skipper. Moments later Melbourne’s Harry Novillo was branded the game’s hero after a superb goal from outside the box saw the Wanderers endure their first loss since Round 3. This Saturday night the Wanderers will look to bounce back in a big way when they take on Sydney FC in front of an expected sell out crowd at Pirtek Stadium.
REGISTRATION DATES 2016 30th January | 6th February | 13th February 10am - 2pm Pioneer Tavern Penrith NEW PLAYERS WELCOME!!!
FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers have been knocked out of W-League finals contention after a 3-0 defeat against the second-placed Canberra United. Western Sydney concludes their season this weekend when they host Perth Glory at Popondetta Park at 3pm on Sunday afternoon.
2016 Registration Fees Under 6 - Under 8 $60
FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers finished the National Youth League season on a high with a dominant 5-2 win over FFA Centre of Excellence in Canberra. A hat-trick to Josh Macdonald as well as strikes from Shannon Cole and Daniel Alessi made light work of a 10-man FFA outfit. The result leaves Wanderers in second position but with their opponents still with games in hand, they’ll have to wait for matches to be completed to know their final position.

t was Emily Imber’s life long dream to represent Australia in figure skating, now she’ll do it for the first time in one of the most interesting places in the world. After a stellar 2015 season, the 15-year-old Emu Heights resident was rewarded for her efforts with a place on the Australian figure skating team for the upcoming FBMA Trophy in Abu Dhabi. Emily’s selection on the national team is her greatest achievement to date. “I was so excited when I heard the news, but I’m feeling even more excited now that it’s getting closer,” she said. “I was told just before Christmas, so it was a great Christmas present.” Emily began her ice skating career with the Penrith Valley Figure Skating Club in 2008, but last year was by far her most successful season to date. In all she won six titles in the Intermediate Ladies division including the prestigious Hollin’s Trophy and NSW State Championships. Emily was the highest ranking Intermediate Ladies skater in NSW. SPECIAL FEATURE 25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION
Fond memories of a 15 year career at paper’s helm s the newspaper’s longest serving Managing Editor, Bernard Bratusa made a significant contribution to the Western Weekender. After a short stint managing the newspaper’s finances in 1993, Mr Bratusa noticed something was missing, and suggested the paper needed to reshape its focus. “The model was wrong and we needed to become a paper that the people would talk about at the water cooler,” he said. “At the end of the day, the Western Weekender was about giving the city of Penrith a good newspaper, because there are so many good stories to talk about.” In November that year, Mr Bratusa kicked off his 15 year career as Managing Editor. “My first front page was one of Penrith’s icons, Ross Sinclair, and we were promoting and seeking community support for WestCare,” he said. “Ross had a trolley full of food, and to me that symbolises what Penrith is all about, people wanting to give to make it a better city.” Until his departure in January 2009, the Weekender created life changing opportunities not just for Mr Bratusa, but everyone who worked under its roof.

“The one thing that stuck with me were the people we got to meet through running a local newspaper, it was a great tool for young journalists coming through,” he said. “There are so many success stories to come out of the Weekender, it’s a real vehicle for young people to get into the media scene and progress their futures.” Mr Bratusa hired countless journalists during his time at the Weekender, including current Managing Editor, Troy Dodds. But as a Panthers fan, Mr Bratusa notes the team’s 2003 Grand Final as one of his fondest memories. “That was like a kid being in a lolly shop,” he said. Mr Bratusa said the Weekender was and still is grassroots reporting at its absolute best. “The Weekender makes an important contribution to the media landscape of western Sydney and Penrith,” he said. “I wish the new owners and the staff every success that they are celebrating another 25 years then another 25 after that. “The Western Weekender is as Penrith as the Nepean River, and that’s just an opinion.” – Dale Drinkwater

SPECIAL FEATURE 25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION
25 of the best: Stories that made us laugh, cry and celebrate Penrith has changed a lot in the last 25 years, and The Western Weekender has been there to cover the biggest stories that have affected the region during that time. Here’s what our team consider to be the biggest, and most significant, local stories we’ve covered in the last quarter of a century...
25
Third time lucky 2007
David Bradbury simply wouldn’t give in, and Labor wouldn’t let him. Despite failing to secure the seat of Lindsay at the 2001 and 2004 Federal Elections, Mr Bradbury remained confident of winning in 2007 and in a case of third time lucky, he managed to secure the seat for Labor. It was a significant step in the career of Mr Bradbury, who had previously served as Penrith Mayor and was touted by many as a future Prime Minister. Mr Bradbury was re-elected in 2010.
24
Gould returns to lead Panthers
22
2011
He walked out on the Penrith Panthers in 1994, and it would take some 17 years for all to be forgiven. In 2011, the Panthers welcomed back Phil ‘Gus’ Gould, the coach who took them to premiership success in 1991. Gould returned in a coaching director’s role, but soon realised just how bad things were at the club and eventually took over as General Manager. He made an immediate impact – sacking coach Matthew Elliott within weeks, terminating the contract of Daine Laurie and fining Michael Jennings for consuming alcohol while injured. Over the following years, Gould would work to re-build the Panthers into a successful brand.
23
Apple arrives in Penrith 2011
2004
Panthers was in the spotlight in 2004 when a State Government inquiry was launched into claims of corruption. The inquiry’s terms of reference included allegations surrounding the aborted March 2002 club board elections, and voting rights in general. Other matters subject to the inquiry included the remuneration package of CEO Roger Cowan, and the financial dealings between the club and his family company, Phyro Holdings. The inquiry found no evidence of dishonesty, corruption or conflict of interest at Panthers.
21
As far as big retailers arriving in Penrith is concerned, the opening of Apple in 2011 is certainly right up there with the top success stories. The opening helped revitalise the ‘new’ section of Westfield Penrith, and it has proven an extremely popular store ever since its opening. On July 22, 2011 the Weekender featured self-confessed Apple ‘lunatic’ Rich Evans on the front page. Mr Evans, sporting an Apple tattoo, was among the first to visit the new store on its opening day. The store remains a major success.
The Temby Inquiry
The Plaza becomes Westfield 2005
To multiple generations, it’ll always be known as ‘The Plaza’. But in 2005, Penrith’s major shopping centre changed its name to Westfield Penrith after the Westfield Group purchased a 50 per cent stake in the centre from the CPT Group. Originally built in the 1970s, the centre underwent extensive redevelopment during the early 1990s. Built in three stages, the centre was demolished and rebuilt leaving the first two levels of Myer the only remaining part of the original complex. More major renovations took place in 2005.

2KA switches to FM
16
1992
If you grew up in Penrith in the 1970s and 1980s, you most probably listened to the famous radio station 2KA. Once owned by Australian TV personality Mike Walsh, it broadcasted from Borec House on the corner of Station Street and Henry Street in Penrith before moving to a new studio at the intersection of Henry and Lawson Streets. On October 23, 1992 at 1pm, 2KA left the AM band, converted to FM and became ONE FM (later 96.1 FM). From that moment, the great 2KA was history. 2KA famously called Penrith Panthers home games, with Frank Ley and Brian Sanders the names synonymous with the sports coverage. 2KA broadcasted Panthers games from 1967 (the club’s inaugural season) until 1993.

End of an era at Penrith Lakes 2015
After 130 years, a significant era quietly ended in Penrith in September 2015. The last truckload of sand and gravel left the Penrith Lakes site on Monday, September 21. The site quarried enough materials to fill the Melbourne Cricket Ground 52 times, and at its peak, produced seven million tonnes of product each year. From the 1880s to 2015, the Penrith Lakes site remained a significant employer in Penrith despite generational changes, technology shifts and the area’s growth from a small country town into a thriving city.
M4 Motorway completed
17
1993
Many of us sit on it for far too long every single day, but there’s no doubt that the M4 Motorway has made Penrith’s connection with Sydney much smoother. The motorway was finally finished in 1993 when a new section between Emu Plains and Lapstone was open to traffic. Of course, nothing is ever really finished, and the M4 has continued to undergo upgrades and improvements ever since, one of the most significant being the construction of the M7 Motorway, which links to the M4 at Eastern Creek and was opened in 2003.
Fiona Scott wins Lindsay 2013
After an unsuccessful attempt in 2010, Fiona Scott returned at the 2013 Federal Election and won the seat of Lindsay for the Liberal Party. She defeated sitting MP David Bradbury, who had defeated her three years earlier. The day prior to the election, the Weekender boldly declared “It’s hers”, predicting that Ms Scott would return the Liberal Party to power in Lindsay. “I don’t think there is a single person in this room that doesn’t realise what a massive, massive fight this has been over three years,” she told Liberal supporters on election night. “I am so humbled by the result and so humbled that people have put their trust in me. It’s a phenomenal experience.”
Ron Mulock dies 2014
The name Ron Mulock was synonymous with Penrith, and when he passed away in 2014 it led to one of the biggest funerals Penrith has ever seen, with locals from all generations keen to pay their respects. Mr Mulock was a giant of state politics, representing Nepean, Penrith and St Marys from 1971 to 1988. He became Shadow Attorney-General and Justice Minister during his time in Government, and eventually was named Deputy Premier. Penrith through and through, Ron Mulock defined decency and his name will forever live on in the local area. Mr Mulock loved Penrith, and served on many Boards and committees after his time in politics.

The Wanderers arrive 2012
Soccer had always been the sleeping giant of local sport and when the Western Sydney Wanderers arrived in time for the 2012-13 A-League season, it signalled the beginning of a new era for the code. While the Wanderers play out of Parramatta, it was made clear from the outset that they represent western Sydney as a whole, including Penrith. The Wanderers have played several matches at Penrith Stadium since first entering the competition.

Floods cause major damage across Penrith 2012
Flash flooding inundated roads and houses in Penrith in February 2012, in what was one of the biggest flood emergencies the city has ever faced. Homes were evacuated and millions of dollars of damage was caused when some 100mm of rain drenched Penrith, Londonderry, Cranebrook, Castlereagh, Jamisontown and Werrington. Londonderry MP Bart Bassett spoke of the community spirit that existed in the aftermath of the floods when he addressed Parliament soon after the emergency. “The Aussie spirit of mateship and support for our neighbours shone through in our community during the recent floods, with volunteers from the State Emergency Service, the Rural Fire Service and the general public coming out to help with the clean-up, helping residents to find temporary accommodation and providing basic everyday items, such as clothing and food,” he said.
13
Penrith turns 200 2015
Penrith celebrated in style in 2015 to mark the city’s Bicentenary. A major festival was held at Thornton, one of the city’s newest suburbs, and locals reflected on the remarkable history that Penrith boasts. Celebrations commenced in February, with the opening of a heritage display at Penrith City Library. The display featured artefacts belonging to early settlers and explorers, along with images of important documents dating back to the 1800s. During the festival at Thornton, a time capsule was buried featuring significant Penrith items.
12
Kelly Country 1996
When John Howard became Prime Minister in 1996, one of the big election achievements was securing the seat of Lindsay. Once considered a safe Labor seat (and held by the ALP’s Ross Free from 1984 until 1996), Lindsay dramatically fell to the Liberals and Mrs Kelly in 1996, with a swing of nearly 12 per cent. Mrs Kelly ultimately had to survive a by-election after issues arose surrounding her eligibility to contest the election. She won by the by-election and set up a strong 11 years as the local MP. She would rise to become a Minister in the Howard Government. Mrs Kelly quit federal politics ahead of the 2007 election but returned to contest the state seat of Penrith in 2015.
Panthers win second premiership 2003
Penrith went from wooden spooners in 2001 to premiers just two years later when they defeated the Sydney Roosters 18-6 in the 2003 Grand Final. The Panthers finished the season as minor premiers, breaking records in the process, and got through the finals with wins over the Broncos and Warriors. The Grand Final will best be remembered for an incredible Scott Sattler cover tackle that has gone down in rugby league folklore. Sattler’s tackle saved a certain Roosters try at a crucial time in the game and without doubt turned the match. Luke Priddis won the Clive Churchill Medal after scoring one try and being involved in two others.
10
Rocked by scandal 2010
Penrith was rocked by a political scandal in 2010 when State Labor MP Karyn Paluzzano was accused of falsely claiming parliamentary sitting day relief payments for an employee. Mrs Paluzzano initially denied any wrongdoing but eventually, would plead guilty to the accusations as well as giving false and misleading evidence to a 2010 ICAC inquiry into the payments. Mrs Paluzzano resigned from Parliament.

Open to traffic 1996
The closure of High Street to traffic to create a shopping mall in the mid-1980s was without doubt controversial, and had plenty of critics. By the time the mid-1990s rolled around, it was clear that the time had come for traffic to once again flow down the main street of Penrith, and after 10 years, the mall was demolished. High Street reopened to traffic in September 1996. The picture below shows a number of men enjoying the final day of the mall.

Scandal rocks election 2007
The ‘Kevin 07’ juggernaut was already in full swing but the final days of the 2007 Federal Election were very much focused on Lindsay – for all the wrong reasons. The husband of sitting Liberal MP Jackie Kelly, who was not contesting the election, was among several men caught distributing bogus campaign leaflets purporting to come from the non-existent Islamic Federation of Australia. The flyers said the Labor Party supported terrorism and forgiveness for the Bali bombers. The scandal, which ended up with charges being laid, rocked the final days of the campaign and ensured Labor’s David Bradbury was a sure thing to win Lindsay on election day.

Airport go-ahead
05
2014
After decades of uncertainty, Prime Minister Tony Abbott finally confirmed that a second Sydney airport would be built at Badgerys Creek. The airport, which will be opened within the next 10 years, is set to have significant economic and social benefits to Penrith. Mr Abbott also announced a significant infrastructure package, primarily surrounding road upgrades. “We don’t want the people of western Sydney to have to have an airport without having the decent transport infrastructure that western Sydney deserves,” Mr Abbott said.

Jim Anderson dies on election day 2003
The 2003 State Election was rocked by tragedy when sitting Londonderry MP Jim Anderson died of a massive heart attack on the morning of the poll. A former sheetmetal worker and insurance agent, he switched to politics in the mid-1990s, representing the Labor Party. He had represented St Marys since 1995, then Londonderry from 2009. When Londonderry residents did eventually go to the polls, Labor’s Allan Shearan won the seat.

The Silver Fox 2012
A Penrith local winning an Olympic medal is a fantastic achievement at the best of times, but to do it on the water is even more incredible considering Penrith’s location. 18-year-old Leonay resident Jessica Fox had all of Penrith cheering when she won a silver medal in the women’s Kayak K1 event at the London Olympics in 2012. Fox narrowly missed out on gold, but it mattered little – she had achieved something remarkable, and the entire nation knew her name.

The Log Cabin burns 2012
Penrith was rocked in March 2012 when the iconic Log Cabin burned to the ground. The community was left reeling at the loss of the local watering hole, which was never rebuilt. The Log Cabin was part of the fabric of Penrith, hosting many celebrations over the years, and the fire hit many locals hard, including owner Ross Sinclair who fought valiantly to save his beloved hotel.

Tragedy rocks Penrith 1992
It was the tragedy that nobody saw coming – the untimely death of Penrith Panthers rising star Ben Alexander in a car accident in 1992. The death of the 20-year-old rocked not just the rugby league community, but the entire city of Penrith itself. Less than a year after the euphoria of the 1991 Grand Final success, Penrith was suddenly in mourning. Alexander’s death at Colyton tore the Panthers apart, and ultimately saw his brother Greg leave the area for a fresh start in New Zealand. Some say that it took more than a decade for the club to truly recover from the tragedy. Thousands turned out for Alexander’s emotional funeral service.

Finally: Panthers win league’s greatest prize 1991
Olympics come to Penrith 2000
When the Olympic Games came to Sydney in 2000, it provided an opportunity for various cities, towns and suburbs to be involved. Penrith was well and truly among them, playing a part in the torch relay as well as hosting a variety of events at the Games themselves. Like they did across Sydney, the Games brought Penrith together – a tremendous spirit existed across the region. Both the Sydney International Regatta Centre and the Penrith Whitewater Stadium hosted Olympic events. The Olympics were also known for confirming John Bateman’s status as one of Penrith’s best ever Mayors.
If there was ever a moment that put the city of Penrith on the map, it was the 1991 Grand Final. The Panthers’ 19-12 victory over Canberra sparked wild celebrations in the area, the like of which had never been seen before. After 25 years in the top grade, the Panthers finally broke through to win their first title and even those who weren’t big rugby league fans couldn’t help but be caught up in the emotion. Royce Simmons scored two tries in the match, a perfect farewell for the hooker who famously declared after the game that he wanted to have a beer with everyone in Penrith.

The longest serving member of the Weekender’s team rene Adams started working at the Western Weekender in September 1995, when it was located above the Apple Centre in High Street, Penrith. The Weekender’s next move was to Lemongrove, then over to Abel Street in Jamisontown where the paper has been based since late 2001. Irene has been part of the Weekender family for just over 20 years – our longest serving member. When she first started at the paper the role was as an in-house production member – the job hasn’t changed too much but the technology certainly has. Since 1995 there has been a lot of changes in technology and how newspapers are put together, especially with the Internet being such a big part of our lives. We have gone from cut and paste and bromides to the modern times of supplied graphics, PDFs and emails. “I really enjoy my job here at the Weekender because at the end of the week the paper is finalised and your desk is tidy – you get the weekend off and you’re ready to start all over again the next week,” Irene said. “Over the years I have had the privilege of meeting many people who have made a start here at the Weekender and then

advanced on to a variety of jobs in the media and elsewhere. “I remember the expression ‘Stop the Press’ well, because my strongest memory is when we had literally stopped the presses, as there was a major bushfire and the printers were running on a generator and we had to drive the files to the printers at 2am so the paper could be printed ... fortunately, that hasn’t happened again since!” While the Weekender now operates on Windows-based computers, the paper for many years used a variety of Apple computers, some of which are pictured below.

SPECIAL FEATURE 25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION
Changing face of news: Print still thrives in digital world hen the first edition of the Western Weekender went to print in 1991 the media landscape looked very different to the increasingly digitised world we live in today. Print publications ruled and online news sources were still in their infancy. Before the invention of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, the local newspaper was the primary source of information for the community. Though the Weekender’s aim to be the voice of the local community hasn’t changed, the way in which we reach our readers has diversified over the last 25 years. Starting off as a weekly newspaper, the Weekender now communicates with its readers through several different platforms, including online through the Weekender website and social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. “Our print edition will always be our number one focus and the core of what we do, but social media allows us to be in people’s hearts and minds seven days a week – not just one,” Weekender Managing Editor, Troy Dodds said. “Social media also gives us an instant
W
response from readers – and quite often the response we predict turns out to be something completely different in reality.” While many have predicted the downfall of print media, Mark Hollands, Chief Executive of The Newspaper Works, said that though an increasingly digital world does mean that some print media will disappear, there are areas that are likely to grow in strength. “Strong print media performances continue to come from communityfocused newspapers, both in urban and regional markets,” he said. According to Mr Hollands, the important thing for any print publication is to consider the preferences of their audience and continue to make use of new technology. “Importantly print titles must embrace and position themselves on digital platforms, especially social,” he said. “Obvious cross-market synergies exist and a publication that steadfastly ignores digital will already be isolated.” As for the future of the Weekender, our aim is to continue to provide high quality local content while embracing an ever changing technological environment. – Kate Reid
