Councillors reject plan to have public vote for Mayor ALENA HIGGINS

enrith voters’ chance to elect their own Mayor has been quashed after a motion to put the issue to a referendum was defeated on Monday.

The Notice of Motion, put forward

by Councillor Marcus Cornish, sought Councillor approval to conduct a constitutional referendum seeking to introduce a popularly-elected Mayor from 2024.

However, the motion was lost with only Cr Cornish and his seconder, Kevin Crameri supporting the proposal.

Penrith Council’s 15 Councillors currently elect the Mayor, a method Cr Cornish disagrees with.

Cr Cornish was not surprised by the result, predicting last week the motion wouldn’t get up because the major parties would want to maintain the status quo. Speaking on Tuesday, Cr Crameri thought it was “strange” no one spoke on the motion other than himself and Cr Cornish.

“They just chose to ignore it and let it go to the keeper,” he said, adding the major parties appeared to have determined which way they would vote beforehand.

However, Mayor Karen McKeown said that wasn’t the case.

“We didn’t caucus on it,” the Labor Councillor said.

“If there’s a conspiracy, I feel very neglected,” she joked.

Cr McKeown, a second term Mayor, said she has never been asked about the way she got elected.

“I have never ever had anyone say to me ‘how come you’re not popularly elected’, or ‘how did you get elected Mayor?’” she said.

She said one of the biggest reasons she was not in favour of a popularly-elected Mayor, was the risk of ending up with a hostile Council, citing a nearby Council as a prime example.

“For that whole term, it was focused on trying to take away the Mayor’s allowance... trying to strip the Mayor of the Council vehicle, blocking staff members from attending events with the Mayor, stripping the Mayor of the ability to speak on behalf of Council,” she said.

“These were the motions and the things that were going up constantly for Council so it was all inward focusing – where’s the delivering for your community in that?”

Moving to a popularly-elected Mayor would have also meant the abolition of Council’s three wards, something Liberal Councillor Ross Fowler said could have costly ramifications in the event of a by-election.

s COVID-19 vaccinations have started to roll out around the country, members of the Penrith community were a part of the milestone event being some of the first to get the jab.

The first group of Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD) frontline workers travelled to Westmead Hospital this week to receive their vaccination.

Along with existing prevention strategies, NBMLHD Director of Public Health, Dr Victor Carey said the vaccinations would provide an extra layer of protection to prevent people from getting seriously ill.

“Getting vaccinated is one of the best protections against this virus plus it is safe, effective, free and will help us to live our everyday lives more freely,” he said.

“The vaccine has been reviewed to meet standards set out by leading medical and regulatory authorities across the word including Australia’s own Therapeutic Goods Administration.”

Virginia Linnegar from Nepean Hospital’s Emergency Department was one of the first NBMLHD staff to receive the Pfizer vaccine.

“I’m taking this vaccine for my patients,

my family and my friends because as a healthcare worker I want to protect people from getting seriously ill and by getting vaccinated I’m helping fight this deadly disease,” Ms Linnegar said.

“I know the vaccine is a big step to control COVID but it’s still only one step, so I’m going to continue to do what I’ve been doing for the past 13 months – follow the

health advice and keep the community safe.”

Along with the frontline workers, Federal Member for Lindsay Melissa McIntosh said that COVID-19 vaccines were also administered in Penrith to some of the most vulnerable community members.

“Our first priority is to protect our most vulnerable Australians so this week, vaccination teams will go into over 240 aged care facilities across 190 locations nationwide, to deliver vaccines on-site,” she said.

“From Monday, our vaccination workforce has visited aged care facilities in Penrith to administer the vaccine to residents and staff which will help protect our community.”

Ms McIntosh said people can check what phase of the rollout they will be in.

“We have released a simple eligibility checker so by answering a few quick questions, you can get the information you need on when you can expect to receive the vaccine, and what you can do in the meantime to get ready,” she said.

More restrictions eased in virus-free NSW

SW is on track to record its 40th day with no community transmission of COVID-19 today (Friday, February 26).

The milestone has prompted officials to ease more restrictions, with up to 50 visitors permitted in homes from today, up from 30.

There’s also good news for weddings from today, with 30 people now allowed on the dance

floor at any one time. A different group of 30 can dance at other times throughout the night, and those dancing are not restricted to the bridal party.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian also confirmed the Government will consider lifting the cap on weddings, currently at 300, in the coming weeks.

And from March 17, standing up inside a venue while drinking will be back on the agenda, as long as there’s no further COVID-19 outbreaks or concerns.

Meantime gyms can have up to 50 people in a class, and cinemas can have 100 per cent capacity.

Despite the good results in NSW and the easing of restrictions, Ms Berejiklian said it’s important for high rates of testing to continue, and for individuals and businesses to remain on alert.

“We have to be as vigilant as ever. We have to make sure we don’t get complacent and we stick to the COVID restrictions and rules to make sure all of us stay protected,” she said.

Lessons learned from news ban

T

here is a lot to unpack when it comes to Facebook’s decision to ban news on its platform in Australia, and then restore it again thanks to a week’s worth of back and forth between the social media network and the Federal Government.

No matter where you look, you’ll find a different opinion on this whole saga – and none of them are definitively right or wrong.

Most opinions come from a position of bias and depend on the author or organisation’s reliance on Facebook as either a news publisher or consumer.

This is a very difficult issue, but one thing that became clear thanks to Facebook’s power play last Thursday was that both the media and Facebook need each other. Both learned that the hard way during the news blackout.

Without news, Facebook would simply become a hub of cat videos, conspiracy theories and community groups wondering why a helicopter is circling above.

It would eventually lose relevance in Australia and would be but a memory in the same vain as MySpace and MSN Messenger.

On the other side of the fence, media companies would do it tough without Facebook – and we saw a preview of that this past week.

Without Facebook, the reach of a publisher’s content would be less, or at least harder to achieve. Some of these publishers have literally millions of followers that would no longer see their content and are not conditioned to visiting news sites directly. Others rely wholly on Facebook, and a permanent news ban would result in an almost fatal blow.

Now that the Government and Facebook have come together in a truce of sorts, the real work can begin.

It’ll be intriguing to watch the Government’s News Media Bargaining Code in action, particularly when it comes to small, regional and independent publishers who don’t necessarily have the loudest voice in the room.

Concerns over smaller publishers were raised during the consultation period for the Code, but it always felt like this was a battle between Facebook and the major media players, with everyone else simply watching from the sidelines.

“Like is so often the case, the answer was and is somewhere in the middle” The Government contends that the amendments to the Code agreed to this week will strengthen the hand of regional and small publishers, which can only be a good thing.

What’s clear here is that the Government never expected Facebook to call its bluff. They were wrong.

From the outside it would appear a handful of major media companies had the ear of the Government, and the concerns raised by sites like Facebook were never really considered all that seriously. In short, Facebook was always designated the bad guy.

And that’s true to some point, they’ve ripped significant chunks of revenue out of the media industry in recent years.

But in all the arguments demanding big tech pay for news, it appears many forgot that sites like Facebook and Google provided media companies access to readers like never before, often resulting in significant benefits like subscriptions, for those who operate behind paywalls.

The relationship between Facebook and publishers, even without payment or the new Code, has always been mutually beneficial, even if that’s not the narrative publishers were pushing.

Like is so often the case, the answer was and is somewhere in the middle.

We have learned much more from this past week too.

Publishers have surely learned that they must work on more ways to attract audiences directly to their platforms, rather than relying on a third party.

Advertisers have learned that too; after witnessing just how quickly Facebook can change its tact and pull down pages.

Traditional media may win out of that.

And we’ve all seen a first hand example of just how powerful Facebook is.

While talk of rigged elections overseas may be the stuff of fairyland, there is no question that big tech can play a significant role in influencing, silencing and guiding opinion, and this is something we all need to be aware of.

Hopefully the result of the news blackout this past week has been the opening of our eyes to the multitude of complicated issues confronting publishers, big tech, consumers and governments in this space; and our need to be across it.

Love triangle was behind shooting EMILY FESZCZUK

A

n alleged love triangle has led to a man being shot in the leg in Cambridge Gardens and another charged with multiple offences.

About 11.15pm on February 18, police were called to the intersection of Richmond Road and Cooper Street, Cambridge Gardens after reports of gunshots.

When addressing the media the following day, Nepean Acting Superintendent, Jason Pietruszka said when police attended a 34-year-old man was located with injuries to his leg before being taken to Westmead Hospital.

“A police operation was quickly put in place where the occupants at the address on Richmond Road were removed and a subsequent search of that premise located a firearm which is banned,” he said.

“Following that, a 42-year-old male was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station and charged to be put before the court with a number of firearm related offences.”

It is believed the 42-year-old man shot at his girlfriend’s ex-partner with a sawn-off shotgun.

“What is simply a dispute between parties involved in various relationships that escalates to the point someone thinks it is necessary to pick up a firearm and fire it at someone is completely ridiculous,” Acting Superintendent Pietruszka said.

“To fire a weapon like that at someone... the ramifications can be fatal, for the injury to just be non-life threatening is more luck than anything else and the male involved was discharged from hospital to make a full recovery.”

Acting Superintendent Pietruszka said police were pleased to remove a prohibited firearm and that the courts would now deal with the individual.

“From a police point of view, we are pleased to remove a firearm from the street especially from an individual that has such blatant disregard for the law, and it is now a matter for the courts to deal with the individuals involved,” he said.

“They are extremely serious charges, firing a firearm in public place where at the current point in time we have had a number of public place shootings will not be tolerated by police.”

The offender involved in the incident did not apply for bail, with the matter adjourned to April.

Housing conundrum Concerns raised after suggestions Penrith could get more social housing ALENA HIGGINS

here are concerns St Marys and Orchard Hills could become a “dumping ground” for public housing, after a planning document flagged the potential relocation of social housing tenants north of Mount Druitt and Rooty Hill into the Penrith LGA. Prepared by the Greater Sydney Commission, ‘Proposed Action 10’ in the draft document – ‘Making the Western Parkland City: Initial Place-based Infrastructure Compact (PIC) Area’ – aims to renew and increase the provision of social and affordable housing near the new Metro stations.

“Some social housing tenants living in the Luxford Precinct, north of Mount Druitt and Rooty Hill, could be supported to relocate into new and well-designed housing in nearby suburbs to leverage the benefit of the new Sydney Metro line (operational when Western Sydney International Airport opens for passenger services), while retaining valuable connections with the area they know,” the document states.

“The alternative would be to defer major housing renewal in the Luxford Precinct until the planned extension of Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport from St Marys to Tallawong, which is not expected in the next 20 years.”

During Monday night’s Council meeting, Deputy Mayor Tricia Hitchen requested Council urgently seek more information before anything is done “against our wishes”, adding it was just “lazy planning”.

“I’m just concerned that we haven’t learnt from our mistakes,” she said.

“That building entire suburbs of social and affordable housing doesn’t deliver the best outcomes for anybody.”

A spokesman for the Commission said social housing stock in the initial PIC area is ageing, with the average age of 45 years in the most concentrated areas of Bidwell, Willmot and Tregear.

“At the same time, demand is increasing with over 2,700 households on the waiting list for social housing in the initial PIC area,” he said.

“Importantly this is a long-term process that would involve significant further engagement between state agencies, local councils and the community.”

There are 7,700 social housing homes in the initial PIC area (white border). Most reside in the northern precincts of St Marys, Mount Druitt and Luxford.

NZAC Day commemorations will go ahead this year, but restrictions will still be in place, meaning many will have to pay their respects at home.

The COVID-19 pandemic saw ANZAC Day services cancelled last year, but St Marys and Penrith RSL sub-Branches are currently planning for events to go ahead this year, albeit with limited attendance.

St Marys RSL Sub-Branch Treasurer Tony Fryer said the usual large Dawn Service held at the Guns War Memorial will have to be restricted to a maximum of 500 people.

“It is usually a big one of up to 6,000 people in the car park, but we have a limit of 500 people this year, so we have decided to focus primarily on service, ex-service personnel and their families along with some representatives of community organisations,” he said.

“We do apologise that we can only have a limited number, but we streamed a prerecorded service through our Facebook page last year, so we will do it live this time

Penrith RSL Sub-Branch confirmed to the Weekender it would be holding a Dawn Service and march, but President Brian Cartwright said it will also see numbers restricted.

“We are still trying to get confirmation on exact numbers and how it will work logistically, but it will be capped to most likely members in a cordoned off area with a full COVID plan to ensure that we are not risking anyone’s health or breaching restrictions,” he said.

“At this stage, we do ask the public to not attend but we are looking to live stream the event from Memory Park to encourage people to do ANZAC Day at home like last year and there may be the option to have it broadcast at the club so people could safely commemorate there.”

Charity bins dumped Council to order removal of 34 donation bins across the community ALENA HIGGINS

harity bins on public land will be phased out over the next six months in response to illegal dumping.

Penrith Councillors voted to rescind Council’s Charity Clothing Bins policy on Monday night, which will result in 34 bins being removed from Council-owned land.

The latest review of the policy was sparked following a spate of dumping and complaints.

“Over the past 18 months, there has been significant increase in the dumping of non-clothing related materials around clothing bins on public land with Council receiving numerous complaints in relation to trip hazards and the presentation of the suburb in which the bins were located,” a report tabled at the meeting states.

“The gradual removal of charity clothing bins from public land to a more controlled environment (private land) is seen as a means of reducing the incidence of illegal dumping, improving the presentation of our suburbs and eliminating potential hazards caused by dumped materials.”

“It stops charities working at optimum capacity, it lowers the opportunities for local residents to donate, it pushes more usable products into landfill and goes directly against the needs of a circular economy.”

Mr Soker said a channel exists for managing hotspot dumping areas “without throwing the baby out with the bath water”.

He said more bins were needed in the community, not less.

“Illegal dumping is a very small part of the massive overall donations from generous Australians,” he said.

14 bins have been removed from public land in the last three years due to illegal dumping, some of which were removed by the charity itself as the cost of rubbish collection and disposal outweighed the income generated from the clothing collected, Council says.

oles has announced it will no longer sell single-use plastic tableware products including cups, plates, bowls, straws and cutlery.

The move will be effective from July 1.

The supermarket giant says the decision will divert 1.5 million kilograms worth of single-use plastic from landfill each year.

As an alternative to single-use plastic, customers will instead be offered a range of FSC certified tableware and reusable options.

Coles CEO Steven Cain said Coles is committed to environmental leadership.

“This important initiative will not only divert more than 1.5 million kilograms

of plastic from landfill each year, it will also help our customers who are telling us they want to make more sustainable choices,” he said.

“We already divert 79 per cent of our waste from landfill and have recycled more than one billion pieces of flexible plastic with the support of REDcycle and our customers, since 2011.”

While Coles was celebrating its announcement this week, rival Aldi was quick to point out it removed single-use tableware products in 2020.

“We congratulate Coles for following our lead and encourage all retailers to consider their impact on the environment,” an Aldi spokesperson said.

Upgrade forges ahead Another $1.1 million to be spent on refurbishment of Penrith Civic Centre ALENA HIGGINS

enrith Council is pushing ahead with phase two of its ground floor refurbishment, despite ruffling feathers with the cost of Stage 1.

In addition to the $1.27 million currently being spent upgrading the Civic Centre foyer, Councillors on Monday night endorsed a $1.1 million tender for Stage 2, which involves refurbishing the back of house.

According to a report prepared for Monday night’s Ordinary Meeting, the office and workspace layout of the ground floor retains the original workstations, offices, meeting rooms, kitchen and bathroom facilities.

“Redesigning the back of house ensures improved and modern staff workspaces, collaboration spaces and better utilisation of available space by incorporating contemporary office furniture along with the modification of meeting rooms and offices,” it states “The existing lighting will be replaced with LEDs, the existing carpet will receive thermal underlay, and external windows

Stage 1, which began late last year, came under fire from a number of residents online who labelled it a waste of ratepayers’ money.

However, a Council spokesman said the Civic Centre refurbishment forms just one part of an ongoing program of investment in facilities.

“The Civic Centre refurbishment is just one component of an ongoing program of investment in facilities, enhancing community and sports facilities, and the repair, upgrading and replacement of roads and paths in the LGA, which exceeds $227.1 million annually.”

First opened in 1993, the spokesman said the refurbishment will update the 28-yearold fittings and also ensure compliance with current building codes.

“The Civic Centre ground floor office area occupies a floor space of 2,400sqm, the rigorous tender process had focused on value for money for a project of this size,” he said.

Due for completion in late April, Stage 1 will improve the ergonomics of the foyer, create formal and informal meeting areas, self-service desks, a customer waiting area and also a café.

The Stage 2 commencement date will be determined upon acceptance of the tender, which was awarded to CBD-based Hunter Mason Pty Ltd. Council did not receive any Stage 2 tenders from local companies.

A woman has been charged after drink driving in Claremont Meadows.

About 10.50pm on Tuesday, February 16 police were patrolling the M4 Motorway, Claremont Meadows when they stopped a motor vehicle for excessive speed.

While speaking to the driver, a 38-yearold Faulconbridge woman, police could smell alcohol and sighted several empty wine bottles.

The woman was breath tested, which proved positive and was arrested.

She was taken to Penrith Police Station to undergo breath analysis which returned a positive reading of 0.136 and her licence was suspended on the spot.

The woman was charged and will appear at Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, March 9.

Penrith: Man hit with fine after incident with police at shops

A man was fined after using offensive language in Penrith.

About 7.20pm on Friday, February 19 police were called to a shopping centre in Penrith due to an irate woman.

When police tried to speak to the woman, it is alleged a 43-year-old Dulwich Hill man tried to intervene.

After getting in officers’ personal space and questioning them about why they were there the man was requested to leave.

The man walked away while swearing at police before returning as they were still dealing with the woman.

After entering officers’ personal space again, he continued to swear at them until he was arrested.

Refusing to supply his name, the man was taken to Penrith Police Station where his identity was confirmed.

The man was issued with a Criminal Infringement Notice for the offence of ‘use offensive language in/near public place/ school’ and is required to pay $500.

Police Snapshot Claremont Meadows: Wine bottles a clue to driver’s state behind wheel

About 7.20pm on Sunday, February 21 police we informed that a stolen vehicle had been sighted near a licensed premises on The Northern Road, Penrith.

Police attended where hotel staff identified the driver of the vehicle and the room he was staying in.

About 7.45pm police located the vehicle in question parked on Cooper Street, Cambridge Gardens and watched a 44-year-old Londonderry man walk to the vehicle.

After the man opened the driver’s side door and placed something inside of it, police approached and arrested him on the spot.

Police searched the man and vehicle, allegedly locating nine strips of Buprenorphine in cling wrap.

The man did not have a prescription for the medication that was not in pharmacy packaging.

Checks also revealed that the man was disqualified from driving until September 2045.

He was charged with multiple offences and bail refused.

He was due to appear at Penrith Local Court on Monday, February 22.

Penrith: P-plater charged after failing roadside breath test

A woman has been charged after drink driving in Penrith last week.

About 12.40am on Saturday, February 20 police were patrolling Panther Place, Penrith.

Police stopped a motor vehicle where an 18-year-old Strathfield woman tested positive when breath tested.

The woman was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station to undergo breath analysis which returned a positive reading of 0.0089.

Checks revealed the woman was a P1 Provisional driver and her licence was suspended on the spot.

She was charged with ‘drive with midrange PCA’ and will front court in the near future.

EXPLAINER: WHAT “YOU’VE BEEN SERVED” ACTUALLY MEANS I was sitting down watching an episode of the American drama series ‘Yellowstone’ recently when a dramatic scene unfolded whereby a process server knocks on the front door of a Montana mansion, asks the occupant of the home for their identity then violently slams a folder against the occupant’s chest proclaiming “you’ve been served!”

This scene, reminiscent of many other scenes just like it in television and film over the years, prompted a conversation about what the phrase actually means and how it fits into the law.

“Service” of a document is the process of making sure that any person who is required to be given a copy of a legal document is given it in a way which complies with the relevant legal rules.

In New South Wales the Uniform Civil Procedure Rules 2005 set out the manner in which a person is to be served.

The most common types of legal document a person might be served with include: 1. A Statement of Claim whereby a person or entity is suing another person or entity; 2. A Summons, which like a Statement of Claim, is a document that enables a person or entity to commence legal proceedings against another person or entity; 3. A Subpoena requiring a person or entity to attend a Court and give evidence or produce documents in Court proceedings.

Generally speaking, these types of documents are required to be served personally.

Personal service involves serving the relevant document on an individual.

Personal service can be effected by physically giving a document to the

recipient in person, or if the person refuses to accept the document, putting the document down in the person’s presence and telling the person the nature of the document.

If a person who is attempting service is prevented from doing so by violence or threat of violence from the recipient, then the person serving the document can leave the document as near as is practicable to the recipient.

Personal service on a corporation requires the server to personally serve the document on a principal officer of the corporation or on the registered address of the relevant entity.

Personal service can also be effected by placing the document in the mailbox of a property or premises in which the recipient lives and in most cases service can be effected by serving the document on the recipient’s lawyer.

If an intended recipient cannot be located, then the parties seeking to serve the relevant document can make an application to a Court for substituted service.

This is usually the case if the person either cannot be found or is knowingly avoiding being served.

The rigid and strict rules of service in New South Wales are designed to protect both the Plaintiff and Defendant.

The Defendant is protected by the Plaintiff having to take specific steps to ensure that they are served and aware of the proceedings.

The Plaintiff is protected by being able to prosecute its claim if it has adhered to the rules of service even with an uncooperative or unrepresented Defendant.

right, eye-catching wraps decorating four of Penrith City Council’s waste trucks are reminding residents to be vigilant about water safety.

Ripples Leisure Centre has amplified its messaging around general water safety by revealing colourful waste truck signage showing images of children in a pool and the words ‘Become a Water Safe Hero’.

These were designed to promote the water safety message through Ripples’ Learn to Swim Program, which boosts confidence in and around water.

It is a reminder that swimming is for everyone and we all play a part in keeping the community safe.

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown thanked waste contractor SUEZ for getting on board with the initiative, adding the positive, proactive messaging to their trucks as they journey across the region.

“Given the recent spate of

drownings around the country and particularly in NSW – with three more in the past few weeks – it was important for Council to ramp up our reminders urging our residents to be safe around all bodies of water,” Cr McKeown said.

“Council had to think big and what better way to drive a message home than to have mobile posters out and about in Penrith.

“These waste trucks can travel up to 130km daily around the LGA, so they are a fantastic tool for raising awareness within the community as they can reach many residents, regardless of whether they are on their way to work, travelling to see friends and family, or working remotely and having their kerbside garbage collected.

“I have had a chance to see these posters and I must say they look great and communicate Council and Ripples’ messaging in a fun, friendly way – well done to all involved.”

esidents in the Nepean region are being reminded to leave rescuing injured or distressed flying foxes to the experts.

Flying foxes which are also known as Australian fruit bats may carry the fatal lyssavirus disease, which is a close relative to the rabies virus.

With flying foxes being more active in the summer period WIRES North West Bat Co-Ordinator, Caroline Clarence said rescue calls are common.

“Flying foxes live off blossoms and berries from native trees but if they don’t bloom as much like this year then they start raiding backyard fruit trees which will be covered in bat netting that they get tangled in,” Ms Clarence said.

“It can be distressing for people to see them caught and they have that empathy to try to free them, but they can get bitten and scratched quite easily by doing so.”

Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Director of Public Health, Doctor Victor Carey said people need to not handle the animals to avoid infection.

“Lyssavirus can be transmitted from bats to humans through infected saliva from a bite or scratch and can easily be

contracted through breaks in the skin,” Dr Carey said.

“The best way to protect yourself from

infection is to leave the handling of the animal to the trained experts such as a wildlife rescue group or local vet.”

Ms Clarence said while there is a very low risk of coming into contact with an infected flying fox, volunteers are trained and vaccinated to deal with it.

“Around less than one per cent have this virus and in eight years of doing this I only came across my first positive one last week, but to test for it the flying fox has to be euthanised, so it is better to let us handle it,” she said.

Despite potentially carrying this virus, Ms Clarence said the public should not fear the creatures, who have an important role to play.

“Flying foxes can fly up to 50 kilometres per night and are a main pollinator for native forests so without them we would lose a lot of the environment we currently have along with food for koalas and other animals,” she said.

“They are actually such beautiful animals that are intelligent and have huge personalities so we are always happy to rescue and rehabilitate them so we can safely release them.”

Help clean up graffiti Community urged to show spirit of volunteering to help spruce up city EMILY FESZCZUK

enrith locals are encouraged to pick up a brush and give back to the area on March 28 for Graffiti Removal Day. The Rotary-led event, which has been running since 2012, will see up to 3,000 volunteers this year remove illegal graffiti from approximately 600 sites around NSW. Graffiti Removal Day Chairman Bob Aitken said the event is vital in reducing costs associated with cleaning graffiti and to invoke a sense of pride in communities.

“All Rotary groups in Penrith are involved along with the Glenbrook 323 Air Force Cadets and state-wide, Rotary volunteers, church and youth groups, men’s sheds, scouts, guides and councils all get involved to help remove graffiti,” he said.

“Graffiti vandalism costs NSW over $300 million each year but with the support of the generous NSW Government and Dulux our teams last year removed over 140,000sqm of graffiti which saved the community nearly $10.5 million.”

Airport team gives back 400 tonnes of asphalt recycled from airport site and donated to showground

uddenham Showground is set for an upgrade thanks to a donation of 400 tones of asphalt, recycled from the Western Sydney International Airport site.

15 truckloads of asphalt from the upgraded Old Badgerys Creek Road will be repurposed to resurface the showground roadways and pavements.

Western Sydney Airport General Manager of Community Engagement and Partnerships, Katy Hannouch, said giving back to the community is a key focus for the organisation.

ens of thousands of Penrith residents could be using the wrong hearing aid, according to new research.

The Specsavers Audiology research found that the equivalent of 40,852 people in the Penrith area aged 40 and over living with some type of hearing loss are ‘making do’ with the wrong hearing aid, rather than having the problem addressed.

The research found that 41 per cent of people are worried that the cost of correcting their hearing aid would be too high, while 25 per cent believed the process to be too confusing.

While hearing aids can take some time to get used to, it is very common to need adjustments in the first year, which is part of the aftercare aspect of being fitted with an aid.

“You should feel comfortable with the aftercare you’ll be getting before you commit,” audiologist Ryan Lee told the Weekender.

There are a lot of different hearing aids available on the market, varying in price and features.

“The choice of hearing aid has to be based on the lifestyle and needs of the patient,” Mr Lee explained.

“The cost of hearing aids has to be within your budget.”

However, a hearing test does not automatically lead to the purchase and fitting of a hearing aid. Once the audiologist understands where the patient is at with their hearing, they can then assess the options available.

There are certain signs to indicate that a hearing test might be necessary.

“People notice that hearing noise in a noisy environment is a little bit tricky,” Mr Lee said.

“Some people will start to notice they have a ringing or buzzing sound in their ear, called tinnitus. They will ask people to repeat themselves, the TV will get louder.”

The main causes of hearing loss are age and noise-exposure, making it important to protect your ears from loud noise and music as much as possible.

Getting their skates on Skating revival as popular pastime becomes cool again across Australia

enrith residents are rolling up to a new challenge as a skating trend grips Australia, powered by Instagram and the need for an isolation hobby.

It seems an interest in roller-skating took off a little before the COVID-19 pandemic, with owner and manager of the Penrith Skatel, Robert Kersten, noticing an increase in business.

“There’s definitely an increase since COVID happened. It was probably six months before that, where it started to pick up a little bit, but then COVID has accentuated that,” Mr Kersten said.

The Skatel offers a space for locals to rollerblade and roller-skate, but also runs regular classes.

“We book online now, and the classes are usually booked out on a Saturday and a Thursday night,” Mr Kersten said.

Jamisontown resident Allison Jones has been swept up in the skating craze, beginning to skate about 18 months ago, as the trend was kicking off.

“I saw this Impala ad on Instagram, there were these girls in cute, colourful outfits

skating around,” Ms Jones said, referencing the popular roller-skating brand, Impala Rollerskates.

Sporting bright skates and brighter hair, she has a following of 32,000 people on Instagram who watch her skating videos.

“What I love about skating is the joy it gives you, as soon as you put them on your feet. Instant happiness … it feels like you’re flying,” she said.

Her friend and Claremont Meadows local, Bianca Currey, said her skating took off during the period of isolation.

“I skated as a kid; I was a rollerblader at the Skatel. I stopped for years and started back up early last year … it’s really ramped up since isolation,” Ms Currey said.

“It’s a good way of getting exercise, a good way of just releasing energy … it’s a good hobby for me,” she said, when asked what she enjoyed about skating.

Mr Kersten said anyone can get involved.

“It’s an activity the whole family can do, and you don’t even need a skating rink, you can do it pretty much anywhere,” he said.

“It gets kids away from their computers and screens – getting them active is always a good thing.”

Racing for top honours Students from Penrith Christian School set to impress the world ERIN CHRISTIE

S

tudents from Penrith Christian School’s F1 in Schools team are racing towards a national showdown with an excellent record behind them.

Team Axion, made up of Year 10 students Ella Stoodley, Gaumitha Jeganathan, Emmanuel Ndlovu, Vaughan Todd and Jordan Whiteley, came in first place at the REA Foundation State Finals last December, and were able to celebrate with their teachers and peers at the beginning of the school year.

In addition to first place, they won a number of other awards including Fastest Lap, Best Engineered and the Outstanding Industry Collaboration Award.

Led and encouraged by Martin Bishop, Head of Innovation and Technology at the school, the team are now hard at work preparing to attend the National Finals virtually in April.

resources, we have a design engineer, and a manufacturing engineer,” Mr Bishop told the Weekender.

“It’s massive … to reach the level they’re reaching – a lot of time goes into it, lunchtimes and after school.”

F1 in Schools, run by Re-Engineering Australia, is one of the largest STEM programs in the world, with more than 17,000 schools in 51 countries competing each year.

The team built the fastest car in Australia

last year, with designs done by Vaughan Todd, and manufacturing completed by Ella Stoodley.

Although the team must design a car to put forward at competition, they also develop great networking and teamwork skills.

“I think it’s the people we meet, and the relationships we form together as a team, and with our sponsors and our community,” Ella said when asked about her favourite part of the program.

“We have our ups and downs, but I think the downs definitely help us to get stronger,” she said.

The students are hoping to follow in the footsteps of the 2019 Penrith Christian School team, which came fifth in the World Finals, with students Caleb Kraus and Brock Stinson also getting accepted into the Unilever Williams Engineering Academy in Abu Dhabi.

The school’s Cadet Class team also achieved second place at the State Finals.

Simple change could save lives EMILY FESZCZUK

elly Ryan has started a petition to change how stroke symptoms are identified to potentially save people’s lives.

The Jordan Springs resident wants NSW Health to change the current FAST acronym which assesses face, arms, speech and time to BEFAST, to include balance and eyes, which are common with posterior strokes.

Ms Ryan’s push for awareness comes after the 33-year-old suffered a stroke last year that was not diagnosed under the FAST training.

“Four years ago, I had a vertebral artery dissection where I lost my vision, couldn’t walk straight and had funny speech but it only lasted five minutes,” she said.

“Then last year I had similar symptoms with balance and eye issues but worse, so I called an ambulance and was transported to hospital where I waited six hours for a CT scan then after staying overnight in hospital, I was told to start on aspirin and get an MRI whenever I could.”

Ms Ryan said she was shocked to find out she had suffered a stroke.

“A few weeks after I hadn’t heard anything, so followed up and found out that both of my arteries had torn and clotted causing a stroke in the back of my brain,” she said.

“Strokes in the back of the brain are harder to identify and the symptoms can be from multiple issues but there are so many stories of people going through this, so changing it could help save 5,000 people a year in Australia.”

An Agency for Clinical Innovation spokesperson said that hospital-based medical staff assessing for stroke are trained to conduct full neurological assessments that include the basic screening elements covered in both FAST and BEFAST but are significantly more extensive.

“NSW Health considers FAST to be the most appropriate acronym for stroke community awareness and the general public, and The Stroke Foundation supports this position,” the spokesperson said.

“It identifies the most common signs and symptoms in up to 90 per cent of strokes and is internationally recognised and promoted.”

espite thinking it would have to close its doors for good last year, the proudly politically incorrect Major Oak Theatre Restaurant is back to entertain for its 41st year.

After announcing last October that COVID-19 restrictions had made it not viable to return, owners Bobby and Mary Bradford said there was an outpouring of public support.

“After coming back from lockdown, all the constant changes in restrictions meant so much uncertainty and only trading to 50 per cent capacity wasn’t

profitable when we had to pay rent, staff and other costs,” Ms Bradford said.

“When we made the announcement, we were gobsmacked with the amount of people who said really kind things and Bob, who is the face of the place, was incredibly moved with all of the community support.”

With restrictions easing combined with local demand, Australia’s longest running theatre restaurant is able to re-open for shows but Ms Bradford said it is still touch and go.

“It is all about the atmosphere and the audience, so we are glad to be back, but we do need the community to buy tickets,” she said.

herry Bridge Station Early Learning Centre in Ropes Crossing has used COVID-19 as an opportunity to connect with some of the most isolated in the community.

The childcare centre has established a pen pal program with the Rochford Place Retirement Village, spreading youthful joy to elderly residents.

Cherry Bridge Station Nominated Supervisor, Brittney Anderson, said the program about friendship blossomed out of a bleak period during the pandemic.

“Last year our service had plans to take the children on excursions to explore the community and to build on community partnerships but COVID came along, so we searched for new ways to connect to others,” she said.

“We did not want our children to feel isolated during the pandemic and they wanted to help others who might be feeling the same, so they sent Christmas ornaments and cards and received some wonderful handmade gifts and donated toys from the residents in return.”

Continuing to send letters and artworks every few weeks, Ms Anderson said there are exciting plans for a meet up in the future when it is safe to do so.

rada Clutch is the six-footsomething songstress who has become one of Sydney’s great drag entertainers. Known locally for her hosting gig at Panthers’ Drag Bingo Nights, and her performances of Les Divas and Prada’s Priscillas, Prada has become a staple in the Penrith entertainment scene.

Forever on the go, Prada has kicked off a busy year with a one-woman show, which she wrote during the COVID-19 lockdown while also performing gigs via Zoom.

“Any drag queen you talk to will say ‘it’s all about me!’ And it really was all about me!” she said of the show.

“I tell my story of my drag career, and how that – the struggles that I was dealt – how it could have shut me down and made me walk away, but … I chose to look at the best parts of it,” she told the Weekender.

While excited to run the show again someday, Prada is currently keeping herself busy hosting drag bingo nights, a concept that has been around for years and continues to draw crowds across Sydney, including at Panthers.

“It’s so random, I love it! I look forward to it every week,” Prada said.

“At all of my bingos, the crowd varies – I could have 18-year-olds, I could have 80-year-olds … it doesn’t really matter, at the end of the day we’re there to have fun.”

Across her decade of running bingo, she’s found even intense players have come around to her hosting.

“The people who go to Riverstone during the day for bingo come to my bingo at night, so they’re dedicated, professional bingo players,” she said.

“They are there to win, and to drive me crazy, because I chat a lot, and at bingo they don’t want you to talk.

“They’ve learned I’m not your normal bingo host … it’s fun and I want people to

have a good time – and if it means I’ve got to tell 10 stories in the meantime then so be it.”

Across her decade-long career, Prada has seen drag become a more mainstream part of the arts.

“I’m really happy that it has,” she said.

“It brings people joy, and if it makes the drag queen happy, to be doing that as a full-time job, there’s going to be a lot more happy people in the world.”

Prada is currently working on a new production to add to her performing repertoire.

Prada’s Priscillas will be returning to Panthers in April this year.

At the movies...

Plenty right about this horror flick WRONG TURN +++ 1 hour, 50 minutes The ‘Wrong Turn’ franchise has been re-booted and while Mike P Nelson’s horror/thriller won’t be lining up for a gong next awards season, the result of this 2021 incarnation exceeds expectations.

The near two-hour length may be an initial turn-off, but the film is split into two very distinct arcs – so you’re not just spending the entire time watching a bunch of friends be chased around the bush by mysterious creatures.

That is, however, the initial premise – Jen (Charlotte Vega) and boyfriend Darius (Adain Bradley) lead a group of their hip, diverse friends (it is 2021

after all) through a simple hike that takes a very nasty turn.

Soon we’re introduced to the creepy cult, labelled ‘The Foundation’, and the friends find themselves either dead, trapped or on the run.

‘Wrong Turn’ delivers plenty of twists, and the odd social conundrum – especially when the killing of one of the ‘hunters’ divides the group of friends, somewhat offering a more human touch to the flick.

It has plenty of jolting moments – enough to keep any horror fan stuck on the edge of their seat, and only rarely going over the top.

Be prepared to spill the popcorn once or twice.

Balancing priorities is a key component of successful financial planning

F

inancial planning involves the balancing of a number of priorities, making trade-offs and compromises, much like life. Often in order to gain something, we have to give something. The art of financial planning is finding the appropriate mid-point for the individual by identifying what is most important to them.

When it comes to investing money, there is the risk/reward trade off. In simple terms, growth assets such as shares and property have far more potential for growth than defensive assets such as cash and bonds. However growth assets are also far more volatile and offer much less certainty in regards to returns.

Each individual will be comfortable with a different level of risk, and has a different requirement for growth; we need to find the right balance.

Arguably the biggest balancing act we face in financial planning is weighing up meeting goals for our current lifestyle versus preparing for the future. Achieving long-term goals such as buying a house or having a comfortable retirement usually come as a result of making compromises to ongoing lifestyle or foregoing shortterm goals.

Unfortunately many people don’t adequately prepare for the future and are

unable to achieve their long-term goals.

This may be a conscious choice to live for the now, and allocate their income and assets to having a wonderfully rich life and they are prepared to live more frugally in the future. This is a perfectly reasonable trade off. Others just don’t consider the future and are maybe a little wasteful in the now. This can be problematic.

Others do the opposite, and are ultraconcerned about setting up their future.

Back pain prognosis Back pain has a good prognosis, with most back pain episodes resolving within a few weeks. However, some people can take up to 12 weeks or even longer to recover completely. It is therefore important to keep seeing your physiotherapist during this period to ensure the best outcomes.

ack pain is very common and it is estimated that 60–80 per cent of people will experience back pain at some point in their lives.

Back pain can be mild and purely frustrating, or it can be severe and debilitating.

It is our role as health professionals to perform an extensive subjective and objective assessment where we rule out any serious or sinister causes of back pain.

In most cases back pain is non-specific where the pain is not attributed to recognisable, known specific pathology.

Here are some key principles that we discuss with our patients based on current research to help manage back pain:

Encourage physical activity It is important to encourage people with back pain to stay as active as possible and resume their normal activities in a staged approach. Your physiotherapist will prescribe gentle exercises that will help your back pain settle. It is important not to be inactive and rest in bed as this slows down the recovery period and can lead to more pain.

Back pain education A discussion about your pain and self-management strategies will occur between your physiotherapist and you.

Your physiotherapist will identify and discuss any potentially harmful beliefs about back pain, and fears that may occur when the pain begins, which may slow down the recovery process. Your concerns will be taken into account as they guide you towards appropriate treatments and support.

How to ensure your children and pets have a positive relationship

H

aving children and dogs together can be a great experience. Most dogs end up bonding strongly with children in the family and the love between a child and a dog can be a wonderful thing. However, many people assume that dogs should be willing to tolerate absolutely anything a child does.

Some parents will allow their children to chase, poke, pull tails and annoy the family pet! While some dogs can tolerate this, this puts the child in immense risk if the dog decides it has finally had enough.

Over the next few weeks, we will discuss how to aim for a household where pets and children live in harmony. We will discuss preparing puppies for children, preparing your adult dog for children and the changes the dog may face as children grow up!

The best way to avoid a potentially dangerous situation is to supervise all interactions between your dog and your kids.

Even if your dog is friendly and gentle, remember that it only takes a few seconds for a child to accidently hurt a dog and for the dog to react. If you supervise diligently, you can step in when necessary to avoid bad experiences for both your dog and your children.

What signs are you looking for as a

parent? If a dog shows their teeth or growls at a child, obviously they are feeling overwhelmed and reacting. But, there are subtle signs that you can pick up before such dramatic behaviours occur. It is much safer to learn and recognise early warning signs that a dog is feeling uncomfortable, overwhelmed or uncomfortable.

The first signs that a dog is getting uncomfortable is often a ‘freeze’ or a hard stare. Some dogs will simply run away and some dogs will also prick their ears back when they are feeling anxious. If these signs fail to deter the action that is making the dog uncomfortable, the signs may escalate to snarling, growling and biting.

If you aren’t able to supervise the interaction between your dog and children, it is best to confine the dog in a safe area away from the kids. If you teach your dog to be comfortable in a crate, you can easily put them away when necessary. A crate also provides a safe place for your dog to sleep and eat without worrying about children bothering them. Make sure that children cannot access your dog’s confinement area as this needs to be the dog’s ‘safe space’.

n exciting new Olympic canoeing event premiered at the Penrith Open Canoe Slalom Series, which kicked off in Penrith last weekend.

Three-and-a-half years out from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Paddle Australia launched its Olympic Extreme Canoe Slalom campaign at Penrith Whitewater Stadium last Sunday afternoon.

While the Tokyo 2020+1 Australian Olympic canoe slalom team of Jessica Fox, Lucien Delfour and Daniel Watkins continue their preparations for the Games this year, planning is already underway

for the next Olympic Games, the Summer Olympics at Paris in 2024.

At Paris 2024, Extreme Canoe Slalom will be featuring for the first time on the Olympic program, with the new Olympic medal event only added recently.

Extreme Slalom is a relatively new discipline to canoe, but its thrilling headto-head format has attracted new fans and strong television ratings since its introduction to the International Canoe Federation (ICF) world cups and world championship programs.

“Although it’s still a relatively new event, it was important for slalom to show that we are evolving and innovating in our sport, and this is something the IOC is very keen

to see,” Leonay local Jessica Fox said.

“It provides another use for the whitewater venue, taps into a bigger kayaking audience with the plastic boats, and is an entertaining format.”

Extreme Slalom is a fast-paced race between four athletes on whitewater that tests their power, skill and tactics as they tackle up and downstream gates whilst also completing an eskimo roll.

Extreme Slalom first appeared on the ICF’s World Cup program in 2015 and is a combination of all canoeing’s whitewater disciplines, with competitors racing in individual plastic creek boats.

etc, and the ICF is currently in a consulting process with working groups,” Fox said.

“For the athletes it’s physical, but also very tactical. It will be interesting to see it evolve in the lead-up to Paris now that it’s an Olympic event.”

Anticipating these changes, Paddle Australia purchased a fleet of extreme slalom boats last year and built a ramp at the Canoe Slalom National Training Centre of Excellence, in collaboration with Penrith Whitewater Stadium, which is necessary for the launch of an extreme slalom race.

It made its debut at the Whitewater Stadium last Sunday, with two more races to be held at the venue on March 7 and 14.

Robinson wants more Wanderers coach “sick of draws” as team looks to return to winning ways NATHAN TAYLOR

W

estern Sydney have extended their unbeaten run to seven games, but coach Carl Robinson admits he’s getting tired of continuously taking home just the one point.

The Wanderers haven’t tasted defeat since the opening game of the season but have recorded just three wins from eight games played.

Their four other matches have ended with scores tied, resulting in the Wanderers experiencing the most drawn contests than any other club this season.

Their most recent draw came last Sunday night when they took on the lowly Wellington Phoenix at WIN Stadium.

Three goals scored in eight second-half minutes saw the Wanderers equalise, take the lead and lose it as the Phoenix had the final say in a 2-2 nail-biter.

Wellington took the lead in the first half through Mirza Muratovic before the Wanderers drew level in the 71st minute thanks to a Kwame Yeboah goal.

Eight minutes later the scores were locked at 2-2 after a Bruce Kamau finish was cancelled out by Louis Fenton’s header to

ensure the Phoenix took a point from the thrilling contest.

After the game, coach Robinson said his troops came to life following a half-time pep talk but fell just short of securing all three points.

“I’m pleased for the guys, I really am. I said to them in the change room that they should be proud of the way they played in the second half especially but… I don’t like draws, I get sick of draws sometimes,” he said.

“We threw two points away today… I said [to the team] what we need to learn is, how to be better seeing out games.”

Robinson praised his side’s spirited comeback in the second half, but said that they needed to focus more in crunch time.

“Second half performances have been very good for us for the majority of the season. The character and mentality of this group is very good as well and been very strong,” he said.

“Fine margins win games and lose games, and we’ve been caught up with a couple of set pieces that we need to defend better.”

The Wanderers will look to get back to their winning ways when they play Adelaide United on Saturday and Melbourne City on Tuesday at Bankwest Stadium.

f Tyra-Leigh Tracey’s past four years are anything to go by, she’s in for a huge season ahead on the BMX track.

The Erskine Park teenager is a popular and valued member of the Penrith BMX Club and is currently being coached by former Olympic BMX athlete Luke Madill.

Despite major BMX meets rather scarce in 2020, the 16-year-old still did her family and club proud in every event she tackled.

Tyra-Leigh’s dedication to the sport of BMX paid off this week, named the latest recipient of the Penrith Valley Sports Foundation Senior Sports Star award.

Racing since she was a young girl, TyraLeigh’s accolades began pouring in when she was named as her school’s Sports Person of the Year back in 2017.

In 2018, she was a member of Team BMX Edge. She competed in the NSW State Series and came in at second place.

In 2019, Tyra-Leigh once again competed in the NSW State Series, finishing with silver for the second consecutive year.

She also competed in both the 2019 NSW State Titles and the 2019 ACT State Titles, coming in fourth place at both events.

Carruthers stuns field with huge win at Leonay Open

alented youngster Coby Carruthers has barnstormed to a stunning five-shot victory in the annual Leonay Open, finishing ahead of former Leonay junior Ian Asbury and former Leonay Club Champion Dave Moore.

Carruthers shot a red-hot 3-under-par score of 64 to not only claim the 2021 Leonay Open trophy, but also finish third in the Nett standings.

Asbury, who is now a member of Shoalhaven Heads Golf Club, shot 69 to finish second, two shots ahead of Moore, who shot 71 to finish third on countback.

Ron Gardner took the Nett prize with 63 c/b, ahead of Luke Cook on 63 and Carruthers on 64.

Meanwhile, the Western Sydney Region Veteran Golfers Association (WSRVGA) held its first Inter-Club event for the year last Friday at Wallacia Golf Club.

The event marked the welcome return of the WSRVGA Inter-Club events, following a 15-month hiatus since the previous meet back in October 2019.

Despite the wet conditions, which delayed play considerably, Wallacia (133) came out on top in the team placings followed by Dunheved (126), Penrith (122), Glenmore (122), Richmond (122), Leonay (120) and Springwood (112).

he rugby league community was this week mourning the loss of former Penrith Panthers fullback Kevin Dann, who passed away at the age of 62.

Dann, credited as Panther number 138, played 121 games for the club in a career that started in 1977 and finished in 1984.

He scored more than 300 points in his eight seasons with the Panthers.

Dann was also Penrith’s first New South Wales representative, playing his lone State match in 1980 in the interstate series against Queensland.

In an interview with Ray Hadley on 2GB Radio on Monday morning, Dann’s daughter, Kate, thanked everyone for their condolences and support.

“My mum, brother and I have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and the messages of sincere condolences for my dad,” she said.

“He was so loved in the Penrith community and he was an amazing father and amazing husband.

“We just want to thank everyone for their kind words and well wishes. He was gone way too young.”

Former teammate Phil Gould said he had known Dann for a very long time.

“Played footy and cricket against Kevin in juniors. Became Penrith teammates years later, coming through U23’s, reserve grade together, to eventually play first grade,” he said on Twitter.

“Kevin went on to play for NSW. Terrific footballer. Strong. Fast. Big part of Panther family. RIP mate.”

Around the grounds CRICKET: Penrith tried hard but ultimately went down to CampbelltownCamden in Round 13 of the Belvidere Cup. Playing in a One-Day match at Raby Oval, Penrith won the toss and elected to bat first. The visitors posted 145 before being dismissed with three overs to spare. Nick Adams top scored for Penrith on 45, while Tyran Liddiard contributed with 32. When Campbelltown-Camden hit the crease in the afternoon, they reached Penrith’s target with ease – losing just two wickets on their way to a huge victory. With two rounds of the Belvidere Cup remaining, Penrith, who are sitting in third last, will be looking to end their disappointing season on a high when they face Blacktown Mounties this Saturday morning at Joe McAleer Reserve.

CRICKET: Round 17 of the Nepean District Cricket Association (NDCA) is in the books, with Panthers Cricket Club enduring an unhappy weekend. In first grade, Panthers didn’t play for the third straight week after their match with Glenmore Park was washed out. Both teams shared the points. In sixth grade, Panthers were defeated by 77 runs by Penrith RSL after being outplayed with both bat and ball. Penrith RSL batted first, scoring a solid 7/160. Panthers, in reply, struggled to put any sizeable partnerships together, fell behind in the run-rate and were all out for just 83.

The Republic of Ireland international slammed in her first W-League goal on the brink of half-time after the competition’s bottom-placed club had the better of the first 45 minutes at Marconi Stadium but could not capitalise and claim their first win of the campaign. The sixth-placed Western Sydney Wanderers will look to build on last week’s win when they face Melbourne City in Round 10.

RUGBY LEAGUE: Round 3 of the NSWRL Junior Representative season took place last weekend with mixed results for Penrith’s SG Ball and Harold Matthews teams. In the SG Ball Cup, Penrith just went down to Newcastle 30-24. In the Harold Matthews Cup, the Panthers blew away the Newcastle Knights 40-6.

Both teams will take on the Canterbury Bulldogs this Saturday at Terry Lamb Complex.

Crichton inks new deal

Never in doubt: Exciting centre extends contract with Penrith by two years

oom Penrith centre Stephen Crichton has re-signed with the club for a further two seasons.

The new deal, announced late Wednesday, means the 20-year-old centre is committed to the Panthers until at least the end of the 2023 season.

“It’s really exciting to know I’m going to be at Panthers for the next three years,” Crichton said.

“This is my home. I’ve grown up in this club and built strong relationships with everyone here. I’ve never wanted to play anywhere else.

“To get the deal done before the season starts is massive and now I can focus on playing my best footy.”

A local junior with St Marys and St Clair Comets, Crichton first donned Panthers colours as a member of the club’s SG Ball side in 2018.

“I’m very happy that ‘Critta’ will continue to grow and develop in the Panthers system alongside his good mates,” Panthers coach Ivan Cleary said.

“I look forward to working with him over the next three years and I know

he’ll contribute strongly to our club, on and off the field, in that time.”

Crichton began 2019 in the Panthers Jersey Flegg squad before making his senior debut in the Canterbury Cup, his representative debut for the NSW U20s Origin side and his NRL debut in Round 21.

Last season he established himself as a starting centre in the Panthers NRL side, scoring 17 tries in 22 appearances, and was named in the Dally M Team of the Year.

“We’re thrilled to have Stephen commit to Panthers until the end of 2023,” Panthers General Manager Rugby League Matt Cameron said.

“He’s another example of a local junior we’ve developed into a NRL player, on the cusp of higher representative honours.

“We take great pride in Stephen’s journey so far and consider it further validation of our club’s significant investment in junior development.

“We know his success in Panthers colours can serve as powerful inspiration for the next generation of youngsters playing rugby league across the Penrith district.”

Foes for more than half a century, both sides will go up against one another in the final trial match before the 2021 NRL season kicks off in a fortnight’s time.

Penrith coach Ivan Cleary has named a fullstrength side to take on Parramatta, headlined

by Blues Origin duo and new co-captains Nathan Cleary and Isaah Yeo. Viliame Kikau, Dylan Edwards, Api Koroisau, Liam Martin, Kurt Capewell, Tyrone May, Moses Leota and Brian To’o are all set to feature for the first time this pre-season, while recent Preston Campbell Medallist James Fisher-Harris and livewire five-eighth Jarome Luai will back up following last weekend’s NRL All Stars match in Townsville.

Recently re-signed centre Stephen Crichton has been named in the squad despite being under an injury cloud of late, while the versatile Matt Burton and new recruit Paul Momirovski will push hard for Brent Naden’s vacant centre position.

New recruit Paul Momirovski made his Panthers debut last weekend in St Marys.

Momirovski, who only joined the club earlier this month, played in Panthers colours for the first time last Saturday via a NSW Cup trial against Mounties at St Marys.

Penrith prevailed 18-12 in the match, with young flyer Charlie Staines and boom prop Spencer Leniu impressing.

Other players set to get a run tomorrow night include the experienced Matt Eisenhuth, who joins from the Wests Tigers, and promising young forward J’maine Hopgood.

The Panthers will battle Parramatta in all three grades this Saturday, with the main game kicking off at 7.30pm.
