THE HEARTBEAT OF PENRITH

LAKES MYSTERY Penrith Lakes Development Corporation is pushing ahead with a plan to create 340 hectares of urban development, claiming that “no negotiation” has taken place with the Department of Planning for a Penrith Lakes Scheme Masterplan. The lack of negotiation comes despite the NSW Government establishing the Office of Penrith Lakes for that specific purpose.

n what could resemble a scene out of Michael Jackson’s famous ‘Th riller’ video, the Sydney International Regatta Centre will be transformed into a horror-inspired obstacle course in May for the inaugural Running Scared event. Dubbed Australia’s fi rst 8km night obstacle race, Running Scared, organised by Fully Rad Adventures, will pay homage to the thriller, horror and paranormal genre. Co-creator of Running Scared, Richard Old, said participants will need to run faster than normal as

designed to test participants’ physical and mental strength. Obstacles will see participants jump, crawl, climb, wade, swim and of course scream. “It’s all about the experience, so if someone comes to an obstacle and they’re not comfortable with it then there will be an option for them to work around it and continue with their team,” Mr Old said. Mr Old said the idea for Running Scared was inspired by he and his business partner Danielle Donnelly’s love for outdoor adventure pursuits and horror movies. they try to escape zombies, vampires, werewolves and the occasional evil clown. “There are similar events across the world such as Zombie Runs in the United States but we decided to evolve it and use the entire scary movie genre instead,” he said. “To the best of our knowledge, no one is doing this anywhere in the world and certainly an obstacle race at night hasn’t been done before in this country.” Unlike other obstacle race events, Penrith’s Running Scared will take place completely at night, enhancing the scare factor. The fi rst wave will start at 6pm and the last wave will run at midnight. The 8km course will have over 15 obstacles – all

usiness owners from Erskine Park Shopping Centre have issued a desperate plea to their community for support. The centre has numerous specialty stores ranging from clothing and a newsagency through to cafes and a hair salon – all however, say they are struggling. Teri Climan has lived in the area for 28 years and owns VYBE hair salon. She says that her family business is struggling because residents aren’t visiting their local shops. “It is very quiet. Despite that we have the local school and high school just down the road, the shopping centre is very quiet and we just don’t get enough foot traffic to support the shops here,” she said. “I have borrowed money to keep the business going but we need the residents to come and support us.” Mrs Climan said that she initially bought the business to provide a workplace for her daughter who is a professional hair dresser. “I was sick of people being underpaid in the hair industry and so I bought the business so that people like my daughter could be paid properly,” she said. “I would love to hire more staff but there just isn’t the business. We don’t want the centre to become a ghost town.”

These Erskine Park shopkeepers say their businesses are at risk of closing because of low patronage. Photo: Melinda Jane.

A meeting between the business owners was held last week, with many reporting to be in a similar plight. Located next to VYBE hair salon is a vacant store that was formerly a Two Dollar store, but according to Mrs Climan, it closed because the owners couldn’t afford the rent.

“One of the issues with the centre is that the large columns block the view of shoppers so that they cannot see what shops are ahead of them. We are working with our landlord to make some improvements,” Mrs Climan said. Mrs Climan said that the store owners

would be willing to work with other groups in the community to rejuvenate the centre. “We are open to anything because things are starting to get difficult,” she said. Do you have an opinion about Erskine Park Shopping Centre? Tell us via email at news@westernweekender.com.au.

Political performer of the week: Immigration Minister Scott Morrison Facing one of the most difficult days of his time as a Minister on Tuesday, he handled the tragic situation in Manus Island where one asylum seeker died and others were injured with respect, dignity and professionalism. Many will use this as an opportunity to bash up the Abbott Government’s immigration policies, but there is clearly many sides to this particular situation and Mr Morrison is dealing with an exceptionally delicate matter. Mr Morrison, criticised by many including me for being too secretive since coming into office, fronted the cameras not once but twice on Tuesday to discuss the situation. He’s announced an independent review into what happened. It’s an awful situation but Mr Morrison fronted and handled it as best he could. Twit of the week: Christine Milne I can’t believe I’m saying this, but bring back Bob Brown. As the story on farmers facing unimaginable conditions and strains gained momentum this week, the Greens leader Christine Milne tweeted: “Akin to a natural disaster Abbott re drought. Pinocchio award: Craig Thom son Denials, defamation cases and constant protests of his innocence came to nothing this week for Craig Thom son. There was actually a possibility very early on, when this story fi rst surfaced almost fiv e years ago (yes, it’s been that long), that it would simply disappear. Some very experienced and competent journalists didn’t give up on this story and they can feel somewhat vindicated this week.

Surely members of her party must feel totally disillusioned by the fact that their leader rarely talks about her own policies and plans, and just joins the bash-up of the Government? In a press release this week, Ms Milne said that Tony Abbott was “embarrassing Australia on the world stage”. Well, Ms Milne is doing a great job of embarrassing herself right here at home.

Bart switches to Hawkesbury; Bratusa is likely candidate for Londonderry

andidature for the seat of Londonderry is up for grabs in the Liberal Party after Londonderry MP, Bart Bassett, confi rmed that he would be seeking pre-selection for the 2015 State Election for the seat of Hawkesbury instead. Blaming the 2013 electoral redistribution of voters, Mr Bassett said that Hawkesbury was the logical seat for him to seek preselection in given many of his current constituents have been reallocated to the neighbouring electorate. “The boundary changes caused by the electoral re-distribution transferred over 16,000 constituents I have represented for the past three years, from the old Londonderry electorate seat into the new electorate of Hawkesbury,” he said. “Richmond and Windsor, currently in the electorates of Londonderry and Riverstone, will become the base of the new Hawkesbury electorate and the electorate of Londonderry will shift south to be based around St Marys. “As a former Hawkesbury Mayor, with over a decade of experience in the region, the new electorate of Hawkesbury will be made up of 95 per cent of people who already connect with me as their established representative.” The seat of Londonderry will cover Colyton and St Marys across to Agnes Banks, but the change is expected to be favourable for the Labor Party, who have already endorsed Penrith Councillor Prue Car, as their Londonderry candidate.

The Liberal Party pre-selection process has yet to conclude, but it is understood that Penrith Councillor Bernard Bratusa is the raging hot favourite to become the Londonderry candidate. Cr Bratusa was elected in 2012 to Penrith City Council for South Ward and was formerly a media advisor in the NSW Government. He is currently the office manager for Federal MP Fiona Scott. “I understand that a fi ne, upstanding and engaged local resident has nominated to run for pre-selection as the Liberal Candidate for the 2015 State election,” Mr Bassett said. Meanwhile, in the seat of Mulgoa, it is expected that current Liberal MP Tanya Davies will be successful in pre-selection. The seat of Mulgoa will still include Glenmore Park, Orchard Hills and St Clair, but will now be grouped with suburbs under the jurisdiction of Liverpool, Blacktown and Fairfield Councils. The Penrith electorate remains largely unchanged, with a pre-selection battle shaping up between sitting MP and Fair Trading Minister, Stuart Ayres, and former Federal politician, Jackie Kelly. Wallacia and Badgerys Creek will now be included in the seat of Camden, held by Liberal Chris Patterson. The likely line-up for March 2015 Penrith: Stuart Ayres or Jackie Kelly (Liberal), unknown (Labor). Londonderry: Bernard Bratusa (Liberal), Prue Car (Labor). Mulgoa: Tanya Davies (Liberal), unknown (Labor).

To pray or not to pray? Should politics and religion mix? Debate looms over prayer reens Councillor Michelle Tormey has called on Penrith residents to express their views on whether a prayer should be said at the beginning of Council meetings. Penrith Council’s Ordinary meetings commence with the singing of the national anthem, a message of thanks to the original Aboriginal community of the area and then a prayer by Minister Neil Checkley from the Penrith Baptist Church. But Cr Tormey says that she personally believes that religion and government should be separate. “I personally think that in a secular government it is not really necessary to say a prayer, but that a reflective period might be more suitable,” she said. “Neil does a fantastic job and I appreciate his prayers, but as someone who doesn’t have a religion, it may be uncomfortable for Council staff or visitors in the gallery who are not of the Christian faith. “I would like to know what the community thinks as if there is support, I will ask for a report on what other options Council has, maybe if we even rotate the prayer between different religious leaders.” Mr Checkley has been saying the prayer for Council since 1997 and is appointed annually by the Penrith Christian Minister’s Association, representing Christian churches in the area. He believes that the prayer is still a relevant part of Council ceremony. “While I obviously pray from a Christian

A vicious assault has left a 22-year-old man in hospital and a 29-year-old man before the courts. Police were called at 10.15pm on Wednesday, February 12, after a 29-year-old from St Marys had arrived at a Castlereagh Street, Penrith home to meet a woman. At the time, the woman was in a parked vehicle, in the driver’s seat, with the 22-year-old Colyton man in the passenger seat. The 29-year-old approached the car where a confrontation occurred. He allegedly opened the passenger side door, repeatedly punching the victim in the head, causing a cut to his forehead. Police arrested the offender a short distance away.

Chance discovery of World War II medals a family thought were gone forever

M

KATHERINE TWEED

argaret Bedwell had given up hope of ever seeing her grandfather’s Second World War medals again. But incredibly, over a year after they were stolen from her South Penrith home, the medals turned up on her doorstep, in the hands of local police. Just two days into the new year of 2013, Ms Bedwell returned home with her partner after a long day at work to discover the front door of their home open. The couple rushed inside to fi nd that a hidden safe and all its contents had been stolen, including passports, cash and her grandfather, Arthur Mallindine’s six original World War II medals, including a Star of Italy for his services, which were irreplaceable family heirlooms. Local police began an investigation into the incident but the family soon lost hope. Then, on Friday, February 7, 2014, more than a year after the medals were stolen, police attached to Blacktown Local Area Command arrested a 15-year-old male for unrelated offences. In his property at the time of his arrest was the original undamaged case, containing the full set of medals. They were returned to the ecstatic family last week. “I was totally shocked. I thought they would never be found again – we were sure they had been thrown away or forgotten so we couldn’t believe they were still in circulation,” Ms Bedwell said. “Super lots” plan for Lakes site

local news

Exclusive: PLDC, Department of Planning yet to negotiate key site’s masterplan

P

CASSANDRA O CONNOR

enrith Lakes Development Corporation is pushing ahead with a plan to create 340 hectares of urban development, claiming that “no negotiation” has taken place with the Department of Planning for a Penrith Lakes Scheme Masterplan. The Weekender can reveal that Penrith Lakes Development Corporation (PLDC) has submitted to Penrith City Council a development application to consolidate the quarry lands and subdivide them into 23 “super lots” that will facilitate a second development application for the creation of rural residential allotments of approximately two hectares in size. “The staged Development Application PLDC presently has before Council seeks to rationalise the currently very fragmented site into a sensible and manageable number of lots,” a spokesperson for PLDC said. “Future stages of the DA may seek approval for an urban development precinct which would create much needed housing stock, a great deal of employment and wonderful lifestyle opportunities for people to live adjacent to a magnificent recreational facility.” The Corporation argue that urban development is an essential part of the Lakes Scheme, as outlined in the 1987 Deed of Agreement with the State Government, though the agreement has never been released to the public. “The 1987 Deed states that the Penrith Lakes Scheme cannot be successfully implemented and completed unless the

Whitewater Stadium as a site for medium to high density housing. However, a large portion of land would remain for ‘urban investigation’ and commercial/sporting events as well as parklands. “The development of a draft masterplan is progressing,” a spokesperson for the Offic e of Penrith Lakes said. “The Government is currently working closely and collaboratively with the PLDC to coordinate the transfer of the land in accordance with contractual requirements.” Meanwhile, to prepare the site for development, soil from SITA Kemps Creek waste management facility and the Northwest Rail Link will be used to create the fi nal landforms of the Penrith Lakes

potential urban land identified is considered and redeveloped for urban purposes,” PLDC said. But no masterplan has been negotiated with PLDC, despite the NSW Government establishing the Office of Penrith Lakes in May 2012 for that specific purpose. “At this stage PLDC has not been involved in any negotiations regarding an overall masterplan for the site. If any work on a masterplan has commenced it would be undertaken by the Office of Penrith Lakes, so enquires should be directed there,” the PLDC spokesperson said. But the NSW Government has drafted a masterplan, obtained by the Weekender, showing the lands surrounding Penrith

Scheme. The Department of Planning will allow PLDC to import soil to rehabilitate the 1,935 hectare quarrying site. And Penrith residents could see the fin al landform take shape by the end of 2016. “With the majority of operations coming to an end within the next three years, it is timely for PLDC to commence the importation of fi ll as soon as possible,” PLDC said. Quarrying operations are ongoing at the Scheme, however, two of the three processing plants have ceased operations. Approximately one million tonnes of soil will be imported to Penrith Lakes each year for the next three years to fi ll the depressions.

he University of Western Sydney will make a considerable investment to upgrade its Kingswood campus after Penrith City Council approved plans for a brand new teaching facility. Worth $4.5 million, the new teaching building will provide additional classroom space, a lecture theatre, common room for students, office space and computer labs. The design of the new facility includes sustainable technologies to reduce energy consumption and environmental impact.

It is one of three major projects being undertaken by the University on its Kingswood campus, including the construction of a new library in the centre of the campus, which has already been approved, as well as additional car parking near the student residences. “The University is committed to progressively improving campus environments and creating flexible learning spaces,” according to the University’s Offic e of Commercial and Estate Development. “UWS is taking a systematic approach to the development of its network of campuses, sites and centres to realise its vision for learning... and community engagement.”

Plans for a new teaching facility have been approved.

Smith confident in new laws

11

Exclusive: Attorney General says heavy drinking culture must change ew South Wales Attorney General Greg Smith is confident that the O’Farrell Government’s new laws will curb the problem of alcoholinduced violence. Speaking exclusively to the Weekender, Mr Smith said he believed that toughening the laws will act as a deterrent. The new eight-year mandatory minimum sentence for perpetrators of fatal assaults, where alcohol or drugs are involved, is already in force, and from February 24 Sydney’s CBD will feel the affects of the much-lauded ‘Newcastle Solution’, including 1.30am lockouts and the ceasing of alcohol service at 3am. “I hope we never have to use it, that it’s the end of all this period of aggressive alcohol-induced and drug-induced violence,” he said. Bottle shops statewide will also have to close at 10pm, which Mr Smith hopes will discourage ‘pre-fuelling’, the consumption of alcohol at home before going out. “Unfortunately, our culture has always had a lot of citizens drinking heavily, particularly young people,” he said. “Your recent generations seem to stay out much later and drink… before they go out. “These are the kind of things we’d like to discourage, so the opening hours of liquor shops have been limited to 10pm which at least limits that to some extent.” Mr Smith, however, has been criticised for what some have perceived as a backfli p, after saying in November that mandatory minimum sentencing is an “expensive and

ineffective crime-fighting tool”. Mr Smith now cites attacks on Tho mas Kelly, Michael McEwan and Daniel Christie as the reason for his support of the new laws, adding that he also said in November that the courts need to reflect public opinion. “I think [those attacks] changed the complexion and there was an enormous call for us to take urgent action,” he said. “I still have those views generally, but I think in the situation public confidence is most important, and protection of the community.” Also receiving criticism is the increase of the fi ne for swearing in public, going from $150 to $500, and although Mr Smith conceded that it will be a matter for the police, he believes it will be enforced more during boozed-up nights, rather than day-to-day incidents. “It’s aimed at the trouble spots and aimed at lessening anti-social behaviour, violence and aggression towards police mainly,” he said. “We want to try and increase their protection and effectiveness.” The disorderly behaviour fi ne has also increased, jumping from $200 to $1,100, which takes in behaviours that are antagonistic towards police and the community. “It was very much on the recommendation of police that that happened – generally it’s connected with heavy drinking and pushing and shoving and yelling and screaming,” he said. Also targeted at the ‘boozed up, drugged up’ culture is an increase in the penalty for steroid possession, with a maximum

sentence of 25 years. Mr Smith said it is because “two years was too low”. “Police believe that many of the aggressive fighters in these drunken situations are also full of steroids and that makes them more aggressive,” he said. At the end of the day, Mr Smith said that victims need to feel that they’ve received justice.

“Th is whole initiative has to be done to make the streets safer… and to send a message out to young people particularly, and their parents and schools, that this is just so undesirable that people should get drunk and aggressive and be belting other people,” he said. “A sentence doesn’t bring a person back, but it does help get closure.”

Retirement home break-in: Man arrested by police A man remains behind bars after breaking into a local retirement home, stealing property and intimidating elderly residents. The 21-year-old, who was not of any fi xed address, managed to gain access to the special care wing at a retirement home on Mulgoa Road, Penrith, at about 6.30am on Thursday, February 13. He went from room to room, stealing money in one and intimidating an elderly resident in another. “Due to good work by our outside supervisors, two sergeants who went out there after receiving the call, the offender was arrested and taken back to Penrith Police Station,” said Penrith Crime Manager, Grant Healey. The man was charged and refused bail to next appear in court on Wednesday, April 16 for ‘aggravated break and enter’, ‘enter dwelling with intent to steal’ and ‘goods in custody’. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Chickens killed: Animal cruelty case sickens police Police are appealing for witnesses to a horrific incident of animal cruelty. At some point on either Saturday, February 15 or Sunday, February 16, a person or persons have entered a property on Higgins Street, Penrith, and have killed a number of chickens. Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area to contact them immediately via Crime Stoppers or Penrith Police Station. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Increase in thefts: Locals warned to lock their cars The public is being warned to protect their belongings and lock their cars and houses following a spate of ‘steal from motor vehicle’ offences in the local area. The incidents have occurred in many different suburbs including Emu Plains, Penrith, Cranebrook and Glenmore Park. Many of the vehicles were parked unlocked in driveways of local homes when they were broken into, with a wide variety of items being stolen, from handbags to iPads. Penrith Crime Manager Grant Healey said that after a spate of ‘steal from motor vehicle’ crimes, it is common to see an increase in break and enter offences of local homes. “A large number of these offences could have been prevented if the vehicles were locked,” he said. “Th is is happening all over Penrith. If you see anyone acting in a suspicious way, please contact police immediately.”

killed,” NSW Roads Minister, Duncan Gay said this week when announcing the blitz. “There are 33 drivers who have died so far this year, seven motorcyclists, six vehicle passengers, six pedestrians and three cyclists. “We’re seeing increases in fatalities of men aged in their thirties and fi fties, more deaths in country regions and a near-doubling of fatalities associated with excessive speed.”

enrith motorists be warned – if you do the wrong thing on the roads in the next month, you’ll more than likely get caught. As the 2014 NSW road toll continues to climb at a rate of more than one a day, police will be extremely visible on the roads in the next month. A major drink driving operation will be held this weekend before a blitz on speeding drivers continues throughout the rest of February and March. Operation Drink Drive 1 began yesterday and will run until 11.59pm on Saturday (February 22). The overall aim of Operation Drink Drive 1 is to reduce the incidence of road trauma, which has already exacted a tragic toll this year. In the fi rst 48 days of 2014 (up to and including February 17), 57 people have lost their lives on NSW roads. Th is is a 50 per cent increase on the same period in 2013, when the road toll stood at 38. Driving under the influence of alcohol continues to be a factor in many fatalities. In 2012 and 2013, about one in seven fatal crashes involved a driver with an illegally high blood-alcohol concentration. Operation Drink Drive 1 will utilise offic ers from every Local Area Command across NSW, along with increased numbers of police from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command. “For more than 30 years, police in NSW have been random breath testing drivers, and reminding the community that drink driving is illegal and deadly,” said NSW Police Deputy Commissioner – Specialist Operations, Catherine Burn. “Th is has resulted in significant reductions in road deaths. Nevertheless, many people just don’t seem to be getting the message about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol.” After the drink driving operation is complete, police will target speeding drivers and illegal mobile phone use across the area. “It has been a horror start to 2014 with increases in the number of drivers, passengers and pedestrians

Smaller schools face challenge

local news

Exclusive: Why Wallacia Public School nearly had their staff numbers reduced

O

KATHERINE TWEED

ur area’s small schools face the beginning of term one each year with fear as they struggle to enrol enough students to ensure teacher numbers can remain constant. One or two students can make the difference between keeping or losing a teacher in local schools and this is a change that would greatly impact a small school of around 80 students, like Wallacia Public School. Wallacia Public School currently has four teachers but for a time it seemed that this number would be reduced to three in 2014. “Every year we have a number set by the Department [of Education and Communities] that we have to make [if we are to keep all our teachers]. Th is year was very, very close but every year is the same,” said Acting Principal, Fiona Tritton. “We really were right on the wire this year.” Losing a teacher would increase the class sizes, moving from two-stream to threestream classes and put extra stress on teachers, but according to Ms Tritton, would not impact on a student’s learning experience. The small schools are beginning to lose students to larger K-12 private schools, especially those near built-up or new housing areas. “Wallacia is becoming an older area and we don’t get a lot of growth like other areas. There are no new housing areas opening up nearby this year,” Ms Tritton said. Wallacia is one of four schools in a local

‘small schools network’, that struggle to come up with the right numbers each year, a fact that parents don’t quite understand. “A lot of the families in our area go to big private schools but there is no need – Wallacia Public School is the most beautiful little rural school,” said parent, Tammy Footit. “Being small in size, our students get so

much more attention from their teachers and there is less bullying too – of course there is still the odd nastiness but it is more easily managed.” The Department of Education and Communities said that the process is in place to ensure the fair distribution of teachers across the state. “Where enrolments increase during the

year to a level which provides an additional teacher under the staffi ng formula, the school’s teacher entitlement will be adjusted. There is no reduction in teacher entitlement where enrolments decrease at a school after the February census date,” a spokesperson said. What’s your view? Kelly comeback

Free Wi-Fi Penrith Council continues to be a leader in western Sydney, by offering a limited free Wi-Fi service in two City parks. The service, launched in Memory Park on February 10 and available in Coachmans Park from March 10, is part of our Digital Economy Strategy. Council is offering free Wi-Fi to encourage locals and visitors to spend more time in Penrith and St Marys’ CBDs. The service is accessible with Wi-Fi enabled devices and includes a daily download of 100MB and/or 60 minutes of time. If a session times out through inactivity the user can log in again. Customers can also pay for extra time or download limit if needed. I would also like to encourage local businesses to get on board with this initiative and fund extended coverage. With support, we could fund the service along High Street through to the restaurant precinct where Henry and High streets meet. Details of our Public Wi-Fi Project can be found at www.penrithishere. com.au.

Corby column causes a stir

Did someone donate the drugs in Schapelle Corby’s boogie board to Troy Dodds? (From the Editor’s Desk, Western Weekender February 14). Clearly he was high when he wrote this column. We can not start paying criminals to tell their stories – surely that simply encourages more crime and starts to glorify these people. For Troy Dodds to take this stance simply astounds me – I’m lost for words. Brett Smith, Penrith . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Finally, someone said it!

I am in total agreement with Troy Dodds re his column of February 14. For years and years people have made money off Schapelle Corby and her story. Now that she’s out of prison, we’re saying she doesn’t deserve to be paid for telling her story, for baring her soul. But to me, the most amazing thing of the past week has been how people were quite happy to celebrate Michael Hutchence and the INXS documentary, even though his life too was affected by drugs. We want to see Schapelle Corby suffer because she attempted to transport drugs, but we’re quite happy to celebrate those who take them. A strange world in which we live! Parkview plan not needed

As a resident of South Penrith and regular shopper at Nepean Village Shopping Centre I am very shocked at this decision of the NSW Planning Dept, to allow this development to go ahead (A boil in the middle of Penrith, Western Weekender February 7). With day-care centres in the immediate area and the high pedestrian traffic in this area it is totally inappropriate for this plan to go ahead. The traffic in this area is very busy at peak times now, the

impact of the huge traffic that the Masters store will generate will be horrific. Thi s type of store does not belong here. Thank you for the opportunity to comment about this terrible decision. Roslyn Sargent, South Penrith . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Thanks for your support

ALDI would like to thank all residents who helped donate funds to Barnardos Australia by purchasing a CD from ALDI’s Christmas range last year. Together, ALDI shoppers have helped us to successfully raise over $140,000 which will help Barnardos to fi nd real and permanent solutions for Australian children in desperate need. Barnardos has over 100 programs and one of the programs that the donation might be used is towards the Indigenous Learning Centre in Waterloo called Yurungai. The Barnardos Yurungai Learning Centre provides after-school educational support to 40 highly vulnerable children aged 5-12 years, in the inner Sydney area. By providing high quality educational services which employ Indigenous staff who can be role models to the children, Barnardos works towards improving children’s retention rate and experiences of educational success. Channels on the move: Why you’ll need to retune your TV

Tickets of the future: Opal cards coming to Western Line

CASSANDRA O CONNOR

he Opal electronic ticketing card system will become available for Penrith train commuters next week. On February 28, Opal cards will be available to commuters travelling along the Western Line between Emu Plains and the city. Minister for Transport, Gladys Berejiklian said that the transition to electronic ticketing was an important part of improving Sydney’s train network. “Customers are seeing the value in getting an Opal card because they receive

free travel after eight paid journeys in a week and can take advantage of fare savings every day and a $2.50 cap on Sundays,” she said. NSW Premier, Barry O’Farrell said it was great news for local commuters. “[Th is] marks a significant milestone for western Sydney as we modernise the way people use public transport, put an end to the Monday morning queue for a ticket and offer free Friday and weekend travel for regular customers,” he said. For an Opal card customer travelling from Penrith to Town Hall the single adult fare is $6.30 compared with $6.80 with a paper ticket.

Penrith residents may need to retune their TVs in March.

enrith residents are being warned of disruptions to their television signals in the days surrounding a retune of Sydney’s free to air channels. As part of Australia’s change to digital television, free to air channels are being assigned new frequencies to free up space for services such as mobile broadband. In Sydney, some free to air digital TV channels will be changing frequency on March 18. “After channels have changed, viewers

will need to retune their digital TV, set-top box or digital TV recorder to fi nd the channels that have moved,” explained a spokesperson from the Federal Department of Communications. Penrith residents can retune their digital TV equipment after 9am on March 18 if they are missing one or more of their usual channels. “There may be temporary disruptions to all TV services on the retune day. Service outages on the days leading up to and shortly after the retune may also be necessary, due to work being conducted at the transmission site,” the Department spokesperson warned.

Cyclists urge even lower speed limits on roads

COUNCIL SNAPSHOT A former brothel and currently vacant site will be transformed into a dental surgery if Council approval is given. Lifestyle Lodges has applied to renovate the building at 16/20 Castlereagh Street and transform it into a dental surgery. It would be conveniently located near other medical practices on the street including an imaging centre. The renovation would cost $105,000. Penrith Council has approved the $3.5 million plans to upgrade Penrith Courthouse. As part of the upgrades, the courthouse will be refurbished with some maintenance works carried out, whilst there will also be some minor reconfiguration works of the entrance facing Henry Street. Penrith Council is now accepting comments on its plans to remediate the site at 151-153 High Street, Penrith. Council purchased the site in November 2005 with the intention of ceasing industrial use of the site including glass bottle and scrap metal storage and recycling, sale of metal products and storage of used motor vehicle batteries. Council is now looking to bring the site up to a commercial standard so that the site can be sold and put to better use as one of the gateway sites to the Penrith CBD. There is currently building rubble on site however it is vacant and bordered by a railway easement. The Fernhill Estate has lodged a development application with Council for the holding of an orchestra symphony event at the Mulgoa site. It is a one-off event for an Orchestra performance for 3,000 attendees and parking of 1,200 vehicles.

ot enough is being done to protect local cyclists, according to the Bicycle Network, which is campaigning to introduce lower speed limits in neighbourhoods where bike riders, pedestrians and drivers share the roads. The national organisation is calling on residents to contact Penrith Council to ask for slower speed limits. The call has come in an attempt to make local roads a safer place for all road users, and to lower the number of cyclist fatalities and injuries. “Research shows that a key reason why people stop riding locally is because they don’t feel safe on roads where traffic speeds are high,” said Bicycle Network

Chief Executive Officer, Craig Richards. “Slower speed limits and other speed reduction measures will turn hectic suburbs into vibrant and active communities where people can ride and live happy lives.” In addition to making local roads a safer place for riders, it is believed that lower speed limits could contribute to making Penrith a healthier city. “With more than half of Australians not getting the 30 minutes of daily physical activity needed there are millions of people at risk of developing a chronic disease like cancer or heart disease,” Mr Richards said. “Lowering speed limits will go a long way towards encouraging more people to get active, make bike riding a habit and improve their health.”

he St Marys business community is coming together to support a local family who will be taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation in memory of a loved one. Lucian Page was six-years-old when he was diagnosed with Leukaemia in 2011, sadly passing away less than two years later, but he is survived by a family dedicating themselves to the Foundation that did so much for them. The Page family, including Lucian’s parents, Dave and Jane, his sister, aunt, grandmother and uncles will be shaving or colouring their hair for the World’s Greatest Shave on Friday, March 14. “There are so many kids, so many little kids, going through what Lucian had to – you just don’t know what it is like until you

Airport support Unions NSW has welcomed State Labor’s support for an airport at Badgerys Creek. Unions NSW Secretary, Mark Lennon, said bipartisan political support was essential if the airport was to come to fruition. “There’s a strong consensus among unions, business and community groups that this is a project that must happen. Having the state and federal oppositions on board is a great boost,” he said. Mr Lennon said an airport would provide a boost to the local economy.

are part of it,” said Lucian’s mum, Jane Page. “The Leukaemia Foundation have been really good to us. We are just happy to make whatever amount we can.” The family are being supported by a number of local businesses opening their doors and services on the day, including St Marys’ Kidabout Playland and Skye’s The Limit For Hair. “We want to show the community that there are businesses out there willing to donate their time to support a great cause,” said Skye-Marie Hudson of Skye’s The Limit For Hair. “We want to help raise as much money and hopefully awareness for something so important.” The group has already raised over $3,000 combined for the organisation. To donate, visit the World’s Greatest Shave website, www.worldsgreatestshave. com, and search for “Team Lucian”.

Local teen nervous but excited ahead of World’s Greatest Shave challenge hen you’re a 16-year-old girl, weeks away from your 17th birthday and months away from your Year 12 formal, losing your hair would be a nightmare. But for McCarthy Catholic College student, Courtney-Louise Landrebe, shaving her head next month is anything but a nightmare because she is doing it for a special cause, believing she can make a difference in someone else’s life. After seeing a number of family members and friends struggle with cancer, CourtneyLouise wanted to do something to help, making the difficult decision to take part in the World’s Greatest Shave to raise funds and awareness for the Leukaemia Foundation. “Obviously I can’t fi nd a cure myself so I thought I’d do my part and donate to those who can try,” she said. “A lot of people don’t realise what leukaemia is – it is in the blood, which means it is very serious as it travels quickly and causes a lot of pain.” The Cranebrook teenager will be having her head shaved to a ‘number one’ at school during World’s Greatest Shave Week, March 13 to March 16. “I have never done something like this before and never thought that I would. I am very nervous but very excited as well,” she said. “I am very attached to my hair – I try new styles, cuts and colours so much that my hairdresser is always prepared for me to do something new – this is a big thing for me.”

Courtney-Louise will also be donating her locks to be made into a wig for those who have to lose their hair during cancer treatment.

She has set a $3,000 goal and is almost half way there. “I know it is a huge goal but I really hope I will achieve it. I am hoping it will make a

huge difference – even if it is just to help one person with their treatment,” she said. Visit www.worldsgreatestshave.com and search for “Courtney”.

larming fi ndings suggesting that nearly a third of children receive inadequate, inappropriate or no initial fi rst aid following a burn has prompted St John NSW to take action. The Australian and New Zealand Burns Association fi ndings suggest that some teachers, parents and other caregivers are not adequately trained to deal with acute burns, potentially putting children at further risk. “In any fi rst aid class I teach, I always ask people what they think they should do immediately after a burn occurs. I have heard it all, from putting butter on a burn to milk and everything in between, said Nick Allison, a First Aid Trainer from St John NSW. “Research shows that the initial treatment to any burn is to hold the affected area under cool running water for at least 20 minutes. What you do in that initial time can have a massive impact on healing and prevent further damage being done by the burn. St John NSW has launched an Emergency First Aid for Carers course, designed to reduce the number of children who receive inadequate initial treatment for ailments like burns. “I’d recommend everyone do a fi rst aid course with St John. Some of these home remedies can actually do more damage, so get yourself along to a fi rst aid course and learn what to do, Mr Allison said. “Especially with children, acting quickly and giving the proper care afterwards can make all the difference. The two-day course is designed for

Renelle Jones, Jay Johns and Ashleigh Tavares are on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’.

Yes, they can dance: Penrith trio into TV show’s top 20 f the thousands of dancers from across the country who tried out for Network Ten’s ‘So You Th ink You Can Dance’, three Penrith locals were named among the best and as the competition continues, have gone from strength to strength, with all three progressing from the top 100 to the top 20 performers. Renelle Jones, Ashleigh Tavares and Jay Johns are now part of just a handful of dancers competing in the “toughest dance competition in Australia”, after each was named as one of the top 20 dancers on Sunday’s (February 16) program. The dancers will now compete on live television for the chance to be named

Australia’s favourite dancer, testing themselves to breaking point in different styles, not just their own. “I wasn’t even very sure that I wanted to audition in the fi rst place but I did it and it has been a really mad experience,” Mr Johns said. The dancers are all hoping the community will back their fellow “westies” as they continue to progress. “We’re here to represent the western suburbs. Living here is very different to living in the city or the beaches – I think that it would be very nice for the western suburbs to get a win,” Ms Jones said. “I hope the community will support us.” On this Sunday’s program, Ms Jones, Ms Tavares and Mr Johns will share the ‘So You Th ink You Can Dance’ stage with British superstar, Robbie Williams.

n innovative procedure being performed at Nepean Hospital is changing the lives of people living with high blood pressure, who are resistant to medications, and may reduce their risk of heart failure. The ‘renal denervation’ procedure involves applying heat, through a catheter, to multiple places inside each renal artery to disrupt sympathetic nerves running on the surface of the artery, which results in a rapid lowering of a patient’s blood pressure. Nepean Hospital has been funded to

perform 20 procedures, by two cardiologists with special training, Dr Hisham Hallani and Dr Clyne Fernandes. The fi rst five have already been successful. “In 80 per cent of cases the patient’s blood pressure comes down within 30 days of the procedure and continues to do so for the fi rst six months before it stabilises,” Dr Hallani said. If successful, the procedure allows the patient to eventually live a normal life and Dr Hallani says it also has the potential to help reduce the risk of heart failure. Unfortunately, the procedure is limited to people whose high blood pressure medication is not working effectively.

51-year-old Jamisontown resident prepares for university life fter having six children of her own and working for several years as a childbirth educator, 51-year-old Caroline Felgate is fi nally about to take the fi rst steps to achieving her dream career in midwifery. The Jamisontown mum has been accepted into the Bachelor of Midwifery at the University of Technology (UTS), Sydney, after completing the Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC) at Nepean College. “When I turned 50, I decided to fin ally pursue my lifelong desire of becoming a midwife,” Ms Felgate said. “Th is desire started with the birth of my fi rst child in 1983 and continued to grow from there. I realised what an important role a compassionate and skilled midwife plays in a woman’s childbearing experience and wanted to support and empower women to choose where and how they give birth.” The TPC was instrumental in her preparations for university, helping her application along as well as providing her with the skills she would need to study at a tertiary level. “The TPC was the ideal course for me. I nervously enrolled, not knowing how I would cope, having not been in a classroom for some 35 years,” she said. “It was difficult at fi rst getting my brain to work and remember things but with perseverance it did work! I really enjoyed challenging myself but I’d be fibbing if I didn’t say there were times when I thought it was beyond me.”

with things like computer skills, time management, assignment planning, different learning styles, stress management, referencing and plagiarism, library and research skills.”

eachers, parents and carers of children with autism have the rare opportunity to learn from international expert Genevieve Jereb, as she tours the country. The paediatric occupational therapist, children’s songwriter and autism expert will be visiting Penrith next month for ‘The Traffic Jam In My Brain’, an interactive seminar explaining a sensory processing approach to challenges associated with autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning and behavioural

differences. Aimed at both parents and carers as well as therapists and other professionals, the workshop provides an understanding of the basics of sensory processing and teaches “ready-to-use” strategies to support learning, attention, social and emotional relationships and behaviour in children. “It was the most amazing workshop I have ever been to. I applied Gen’s strategies to one of my class kids and he stopped crying and started talking for the fi rst time in five weeks,” said one workshop attendee. The tour is visiting Penrith Panthers on Saturday, March 29. Visit www. sensorytools.net for more information.

I used to struggle ... but now school work’s FUN! M Most tuition centres are franchises. The Tuition Place is independent and local. T T This gives you three important advantages: 11. Teaching methods and resources are tailored for the children of the Penrith area, a, not dictated by a franchisor from far away.. 2. If you have special requirements, things can be adapted for you quickly. 3. The tuition is more affordable, because a big chunk of what you pay doesn’t go straight to a franchisor.

Working at home

What do you love?

T

orah Bright is becoming one of Australia’s most well known Olympians, not just because she has won, and continues to win medals. But more so because of her attitude to what she does. “Snowboarding to me isn’t about the accolades. It isn’t about competing. I do it because I love to snowboard, not because I love to compete,” she said. Torah’s friends have described her as someone who refuses to be limited by outside expectations. Th is Winter Olympics she has added a third snowboarding challenge: her past success has been in half-pipe and slope-style, and this year she has added ‘snowboard-cross’ to her competition. When asked why she doesn’t just focus on the disciplines that are her strengths, she says: “Th is is about pushing boundaries... I call it character building. It’s a chance for the inner Torah to come out”. What an amazing attitude! In business we are often told “do what you love” and “focus on your strengths”. Th is is not bad advice. But Torah has taken this a step further and decided that she needs to pursue areas that will grow and stretch her, even if they are not ‘areas of strength’ yet. She is choosing to challenge herself, not for reasons of glory and winning, but for her own enjoyment, achievement and sense of joy. Do you feel that way about your business? Do you find joy in what you do? Or are you going through the motions of what you think you need to do, according to other people’s expectations? These are big questions, but important ones for ensuring that we are living our life truly doing what we love and what fulfi ls our potential.

P

eople say balance breeds success and I completely agree. Finding a balance between spending time working on your business and sharing quality time with your family can be difficult, especially when you run a home business. You often have the flexibility to set your own hours, but you need to separate professional and personal time. Here are some tips to help keep the balance. Schedule your working hours – Keep a diary and schedule regular start, break and fi nish times to ensure maximum productivity. Make your family aware of your schedule so they will not interrupt you while you are working, and will keep the distractions to a minimum. Consider working early in the morning or at night when children are in bed. Be wary of becoming obsessed with your home business – One of the advantages of operating a home business is the flexibility it offers you and your family, so make the most of it. Set up a separate work area – Make sure you have a separate room or enclosed area where you can work. If possible, invest in a separate telephone line for the business. Th is separation will help you treat it as a place of focus and concentration. Get motivated – Running a successful home business requires self-discipline, especially if you are a sole trader. Without the social interaction and motivation that occurs in a corporate office, you may feel a lack of focus. One strategy to keep you motivated is to set small hourly goals. For example, your goal for 10am to 11am may be to call 10 potential clients.

he NSW Government’s economic development framework provides a platform for the development and growth of industry in our State. The PBA hosted a workshop recently for its business partners and UWS where senior staff from the NSW Department of Industry and Investment spoke about the government’s industry action plan for 2014 and its relevance to western Sydney. Since 2011 six industry action plans have been developed covering the creative industries, the digital economy, international education and research, manufacturing, professional services and the visitor economy. The NSW Government hopes to implement its plans by focusing on key operating principles. The fi rst one is about demonstrating leadership by adopting a more strategic approach to engage with industry and more adequately meeting their needs and representing their interests nationally and globally. Government also intends to make it even more easier for people to do business by improving processes and reducing costs to businesses. Th irdly government has plans to have a more collaborative approach to drive innovation and competitiveness. The objective here is to strengthen industry capability to better adjust to new challenges and forge stronger partnerships particularly with the research fraternity. Th is is an area of some concern as the billions of dollars ploughed into research has not translate into commercial reality and that represents a major loss to the economy.

he radio landscape has changed a lot in 60 years, and Vintage FM nights DJ Graham Webb has certainly been in the thick of it. Mr Webb, who works the 7pm-11pm shift Sunday to Thursday on local radio station Vintage 87.6, will celebrate 60 incredible years in the radio industry next Friday. His six decades began on February 28, 1954 delivering telegrams on 2UE’s Rumpus Room, and since then he has gone on to forge a memorable career in the Australian entertainment industry where interviewing the Beatles and the Bee Gees are all part of his résumé. Mr Webb currently resides in Mt Coolum on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast and, through the power of modern day technology, emails all his pre-recorded segments to Vintage FM boss Wayne

I haven’t done live radio in many years,” he said. But Mr Webb isn’t just heard right here in Penrith, he’s also on 17 other radio stations across Australia as part of his syndicated program ‘Webby’s Golden Years of Radio’, where he plays all the classics as well as the chart topping hits.

“I love my music and I always keep up with modern day music,” Mr Webb said. “I follow Aircheck and I could tell you what’s number one today.” And it seems the talent also runs in the family. Mr Webb’s son, Byron, presents drive at easy listening station Smooth FM, but even though his own son is in the thick of Sydney commercial radio, Mr Webb isn’t a fan of modern day radio and certainly isn’t a fan of shows like ‘The Kyle and Jackie O Show’. “Today’s radio is a load of crap… all they talk about is their sex life and what they did last night, who gives a s**t,” Mr Webb said. “I’m fearful of commercial radio being a total lack of success within five years. Community radio will take over from commercial radio because people will want that ‘local’ influence.”

Curbing your cholesterol levels

T

hirty-two per cent of Australian adults suffer from high cholesterol – that’s 3.2 million people who are at risk of heart disease. We are constantly reminded that having high cholesterol is detrimental to your health, but not everyone is aware of how it can actually affect you. High cholesterol is a major cause of a process called atherosclerosis, which gradually clogs the vessels that supply blood to parts of the body, including the heart and brain. Clogging of the vessels may eventually inhibit the flow of blood to these important body parts, resulting in a heart attack or stroke. As men and women get older, their cholesterol levels naturally tend to rise. Women’s LDL levels (a component of cholesterol) also increase post menopause. Depending on your situation, your doctor may prescribe you medication to help lower your cholesterol. According to a recent study, Australians are the world’s number one users of cholesterol medication, with more than one in 10 people using them. While they are useful, relying solely on drugs to manage your health is certainly not ideal. Paying a visit to your local doctor and formulating a healthcare plan that caters to your individual needs is a good way to kick-start a happier, healthier life. In the meantime, there are a number of

simple strategies you can put in place to lower your cholesterol. And it begins of course with changing your diet. But don’t worry, the news isn’t all bad. The suggestion that you should not eat eggs if you have high cholesterol is a myth. In fact, health professionals state that you can enjoy up to six eggs each week as part of a balanced diet. They are extremely nutritious, containing ‘good fats’, protein and lots of vitamins and minerals. Maintaining a healthy body weight is key and limit your intake of cholesterolrich foods such as those that contain a high amount of saturated fats and oils. Try to increase your consumption of legumes, fruit, lean meats and oily fish. Along with changing your diet, The Heart Foundation recommends: • Being smoke free • Maintaining a healthy body weight • Limiting alcohol intake to no more than two drinks per day • Exercising for at least 30 minutes most days of the week. Making an effort to pursue a healthy lifestyle will not only have a positive impact on your cholesterol levels, but improve your health as a whole. It’s certainly worth thinking about, particularly for your future. For more information on how to eat healthy and lower your cholesterol, visit the Heart Foundation’s website: www. heartfoundation.org.au.

A new report fi nding one in two seniors are unwilling to pay for recommended vaccinations that are not funded by the National Immunisation Program has sparked calls for the Government to take action. The ‘Seniors and immunisation in Australia: Awareness, experiences and attitudes’ report launched last week indicates that 90 per cent of seniors would consider vaccination if it were funded. “At a time when Australia’s population is ageing, preventative health measures to help protect the health of older Australians will only become increasingly important in coming years, and ensuring public health policy is geared towards reducing the burden of vaccine preventable diseases, regardless of age, cannot be stressed enough,” said Michael Woodward, Senior Geriatrician, Austin Health.

More than 300 people took the rare opportunity to be among the fi rst to step foot into Nepean Hospital’s newest facility over the weekend. The new Nepean Mental Health Centre was opened to the public on Saturday, February 15, with hopes that the experience might clear the air on an often misconceived topic. Those who attended were able to take part in tours of the facility, listening to presentations about the services that will be hosted inside, including specialist mental health services for older persons and the acute and high dependency units, as well as the special art display. The day was a major success.

The Walk In Her Shoes campaign runs from March 17 to March 23, inviting Australians to walk up to 100km over the campaign to raise money and awareness for those who don’t have the luxury of simply turning on the tap for a drink, through organisation CARE Australia. “Whether you are a novice or seasoned athlete, there is no greater exhilaration than the feeling of conquering a personal challenge, such as completing CARE’s Walk In Her Shoes Challenge,” said health and fitness expert, Donna Aston. “Whether you choose to walk 25km, 50km or

100km over one week, there is an immense feeling of satisfaction in having joined thousands of other Australians in walking such a long distance. And even better, you’ll be supporting CARE’s work and making a genuine difference to the lives of women and girls in poor countries.” In the lead up to the walk, Ms Aston has shared her top tips for preparing yourself for the Walk In Her Shoes challenge. 1. Buddy up or join a team: Preparing for Walk In Her Shoes alongside some friends may appeal to your competitive nature and can be a welcome change to your regular routine. 2. The right footwear: Walking 25, 50 and 100 kilometres equals around 5,000, 10,000 and 20,000 steps each day for a week. The right footwear ensures minimal pressure on our

HOROSCOPES

OWN YOUR DREAM CAR

by Jo Madeline Moore

ARIES MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

Mercury is motionless until Friday, giving you plenty of time to tweak arrangements and clear any backlog. Dueling traits of impatience and integrity do battle, but by week’s end your honesty wins out. Allow imaginative ideas to effervesce and sketch the outline of a money-making venture. In the words of Steve Jobs (born on February 24, 1955): “Details matter, it’s worth getting it right”.

Resi Cars can help you own your dream car at the best possible price.

TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

A change in the landscape is rejuvenating. Solar energy makes you a magnet for exotic places and unfamiliar faces. Your communication hat is on, prompting you to regale the crowd with tall tales and true. Connections made this week propel you one step higher on the ladder of success and popularity. Be vigilant about energy levels though, as Mars in the health zone warns against burnout.

GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

As you muscle in on someone else’s territory, red lights flash. The action planet Mars warns against repeating past mistakes and treading on tender toes. Your intentions are usually good but the execution is sometimes rushed. Tap into the good twin and give the inner rebel a rest. Mercury fin ally moves forwards on Friday, releasing you from recent constraints and competitive situations.

The Sun in the house of secrecy sanctions your silence and protects your privacy.

VIRGO AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

You stop short of idle gossip, valuing fidelity above fame and fact over fiction. Deft diplomacy comes courtesy of compatible solar energy in the relationship sector. Discreet friends and family members teach you the art of keeping secrets, something you learn by studying their behaviour. As Beatle George Harrison (born February 25, 1943) wisely observed, “Gossip is the devil’s radio”.

WW7105

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

Your ruler Venus brings a sense of entitlement to the home zone and others are expected to do your bidding for a welcome change. In a positive sense, you contemplate a revamp or de-clutter of your domestic surroundings. Moving to a bigger or better space is the ultimate goal but budgetary constraints inhibit spending. Creative solutions are the answer to your prayers.

SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Mars boosts mental prowess and prevents you from being bullied by others. Your ability to make decisions has never been better, even though you take the well-worn path rather than heading in a new direction. Your personal magnetism is enticing to everyone this week… you’re in favour with family members, colleagues want you in their corner and friends crave your company.

SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

You trade freedom for familiarity. Up close and personal stars sneak under your guard, transforming Sagittarians into cuddly and confident individuals. Other people’s friends become your best buddies, and already intense love affairs deepen further. Jealousy is never far from your doorstep during this playful period and a little discretion goes a long way. Forewarned is forearmed.

CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

It’s time to stop fretting about the small stuff and put fir stworld problems in their proper perspective. Compassionate planets in the communication zone help you see past the superficial and spot the fakes, as once major concerns turn into minor worries and money matters take a back seat. Positive Venus/Saturn aspects are super for cementing a somewhat shaky relationship.

Your whisper of wanderlust becomes a cry for freedom, while the Sun in the escapist realm releases you from the restraints of routine. The impending New Moon puts the focus fi rmly on travel plans and self-improvement.

LIBRA

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

A bonus or benefit puts you in the box seat. Static Mercury causes delays until Friday but they trigger annoyance rather than anxiety. Once unfathomable problems are solved in an instant and karmic credits continue to accumulate. And while you remain unaffected by wealth, you welcome a boost to your bank account. Empathetic friends add a precious touch to affairs of the heart.

PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

Hogging the limelight is your current astrological right. The Sun in Pisces provides a positive aura and radiates warmth in your surroundings. No longer the stereotypical spectator, you abandon self-discipline and set off in search of pleasure. It’s not all play and no work though; your day-to-day duties still exist in the real world. Finding the right balance is tricky but not impossible.

FITEC FITNESS CHAMPION

47

Brought to you by

Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...

Make sure fitness is part of your daily plan It’s a juggling act! Being so busy forces me to have a very structured life that allows fitness to feature prominently. We all have time to train, one my favourite quotes is: “A one hour workout is only four per cent of your day! NO Excuses!” Three top tips for good health: 1. Proper planning prevents poor performance. Be organised and prepared in relation to food (what and when are you going to eat) and training (when and what type of training are you going to do). 2. Build your body from the inside out. Nutrition is the key. Drink lots of water; eat good quality protein, vegetables, fruit and berries, natural fats and oils and nuts and seeds. Eat high starch foods sparingly and avoid sugar. 3. Build your fitness training around creating a strong core as this is the centrepiece of creating a strong body that will assist you through life. Party muscles (chest and arms) won’t! A daily must do? I work in a field in policing where I see a lot of heartache and pain. Take the time

every day to be grateful for what you have in life.

life & style

How does fitness feature in your life? Fitness has been part of my daily routine for many years. I am 42 years of age and I have been training in some form or capacity since I was 15 years of age. I am currently involved in CrossFit and love it! My time training has not been without its diffic ulties. I have suffered a number of back injuries that resulted in me having three lots of back surgery with the last surgery being a spinal fusion. As a result of these injuries I have rebuilt my body and mind after discovering CrossFit. Recovery from my injury inspired me to begin a career in Personal Training. I completed my Certificate IV in Fitness through Fitec and then established ZEW Personal Training. I conduct my Personal Training at CrossFit HF, and am also part of the coaching team there. I train both kids and adults with all different goals from weight loss, to endurance training, to muscle gain and establishing movement patterns. I named my business ZEW, after my three beautiful children, Zane, Ella and Wil. The business is growing, and life is busy with three kids aged four, eight and 10 and working full time in the NSW Police Force. Added into the mix is keeping up my own training.

Biggest health / fitness misconception? If you exercise, you can eat whatever you want! Th ink again! In order to make up for that slice of pizza you ate, you would need to jog for 30 minutes to work those calories off. Love a quote, here’s another; “You can’t out train a bad diet.” Believe me, I have tried and failed miserably. What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? The benefit of fitness and health at the age of 42 is my ability to train alongside other guys in their early 20’s at the gym and in competitions. The old stereotype of the middle aged Australian male does not exist in my world because of it. I am confident that the greatest benefit will come in my later years in life, because I have built great foundations. What type of activity / exercise do you enjoy the most? I love the CrossFit, it has allowed me to build strength, stamina, speed and flexibility all through correct movement patterns which holds us in good stead.

Shopping experience ruined by uninterested sales staff

life & style

T

here is a fi ne line between a good and a bad shopping experience, between one that leaves you happy and one that leaves you mad, between one that has you reaching for your wallet and one that keeps your wallet in your bag. For me, this fi ne line all comes down to the shop assistant. Th is week I had picked out a couple of items at a store and was waiting in front of the counter to be served. With the clothes in my hands, I was obviously ready to make a purchase but I was being ignored. There was a shop assistant behind the counter, who I am positive had seen me standing there, chatting to the other shop assistant, who had just clocked on, about their weekend. I stood waiting for five minutes (seriously, I timed it), as they chatted about how hot that guy was and how much fun they had, before fi nally I was acknowledged. I was expecting a “sorry to keep you waiting, how can I help?” but instead I got a rude “are you right?” in a tone that suggested I was interrupting the world’s most important conversation. I politely replied with “no, actually I am waiting to be served. Is this where I pay?”. The girl grabbed the clothes from my hand with a huff and struck up the conversation with her friend as I stood by fuming. Is it wrong of me to expect to have the full attention of the shop assistant? I have always been under the impression that it is their job to make my shopping experience pleasant... I understand that sometimes you have a bad day (I have had many myself) but surely that shouldn’t be taken out on a customer. And for the record, from the conversation I was

hearing, this particular shop assistant was not having a bad day. After collecting my purchase I still thanked the assistant for her service (she didn’t reply and may have even given me a dirty look, I’m not sure) and solemnly vowed to never visit that store again – imagine if the owners knew. I didn’t complain to management, I didn’t even complain to the offender herself, I just walked off to spend the rest of my day in a bad mood. I am 100 per cent sure that this is not the way my experience should have gone. Had she been nice and chatty from the start or even apologetic after my initial wait, I would have left in a good mood, keen to get home and throw on my new outfit but now, it sits in my wardrobe untouched.

Diabetes and blindness

O

ne of the little known complications of diabetes is the serious risk of going blind. Th is is from a condition that causes damage to the small blood vessels behind the eyes, called Diabetic Retinopathy. The good news is that through regular monitoring of your blood glucose levels, you can greatly reduce your risks. Diabetes affects circulation, which is why it can lead to problems with your feet and eyes. With diabetes-related eye problems, the small blood vessels behind the eyes become damaged and this can lead to complete blindness. One of the most important ways to look after your eyes is to maintain good, stable blood glucose levels. Regular testing is vital, and many diabetics do not test enough. To properly manage diabetes, you should test according to a personalised testing regime. Important testing times include immediately before a meal and two hours after. The reading two hours after fi nishing the meal is the MOST important reading! It shows how your body and your medication is responding to the food you ate. The damage is done when your blood sugars are elevated. Ideally, you should be testing before and after each meal until you get stabilised. Also, it is very important to have your eyes regularly checked by an optometrist. As the damage done to your eyes happens slowly, many people often do not notice the effects until it is too late and their vision has become blurred. Once the damage has been done, you cannot reverse it, only prevent it getting worse. There are some symptoms, such as blurred vision that is not corrected by wearing glasses, having difficulty seeing at night and being sensitive to glare. If you notice these you should see your doctor.

Feeding your dog table scraps

O

ne of my clients was asking me the other day what “people” foods she could feed her dog. She was aware of some of the no-no’s but wanted me to explain all those things she could give her dog. As with human nutrition there are vast numbers of scientific studies investigating what different foods do to our pets. We have yet to come up with the perfect diet. I believe there are many different ways of feeding a healthy diet to our pets. The question is always whether a commercially available diet is the best, such as dry or tinned foods, or a home prepared diet. Again, I think it depends on the dog, the owner and the lifestyles they both live. I have seen healthy dogs that live long happy lives on all the different types of diets. Most of us have or know someone who gives “people food” or table scraps to dogs. Just because it comes from the table doesn’t make it bad for your dog. Many people make their own dog food and their dogs eat people food without a problem. However moderation is the key. A common concern with feeding table scraps is that it causes obesity, but if given in moderation obesity does not necessarily occur. Any time you give your dog extra food, you are adding extra calories. If the food is high in fats and sugars you will risk your dog becoming obese. The risk is higher in small dogs as they are proportionally smaller than us. For example, a 10kg dog eating a piece of toast is the equivalent of an adult eating a Big Mac hamburger. Sharing healthy foods in small amounts or reducing your dog’s regular food by an equal amount will avoid your dog becoming obese. Foods that are high in fat can also cause pancreatitis. Thi s is an inflammation of the pancreas which causes vomiting. High fat foods to avoid include bacon, pate, sausage, gravy-covered meat, fat trimmings and chicken skin. Fresh fruits and veggies are healthy treats but do avoid grapes, raisins and sultanas.

life & style

fter a few minutes of watching parents killing kids, lovers killing partners, drug dealers selling stories, random shootings and all sorts of political fighting, I have realised watching sensationalised TV news will quickly put to an end any hope of being an optimistic, positive human being. Einstein said, “The most important decision a man will ever make is whether he lives in a friendly universe”. I think what he was getting at was how you believe the world around you operates is how you interpret the things that happen to you every day, a bit like the old ‘glass half full’ saying. It turns out, people who believe they live in a friendly universe are looking for opportunity at every turn. People who believe they live in an unfriendly universe look to be persecuted. They live in fear, and fear is the enemy of just about everything healthy. There are many studies showing how health is massively affected by fear or stress. And none of them are positive. Many news directors have made a choice that is understandable in our capitalistic system. They want to attract as many people as they can so they can get the most money possible for the commercials that run within their broadcasts. And so, as many a young reporter is told from day one, “if it bleeds, it leads,” meaning the bigger the tragedy the better the story it will make. Well at least there is a simple answer to this one. If it’s making you angry or your gut churn to watch the lead story, Turn it off ! That’s what bad health feels like. If I wouldn’t want my six-year-old to watch something, why do I need to watch it? He still thinks the world is a great place full of lots of good people, he’s got the time and energy to be creative and positive all the time and that’s a great healthy place for him to be in. Now call me naïve but I think I’m want to be in the same place.

he chemical industry want us to believe that no harm comes from their products and Naturopaths have been ridiculed for warning against such chemicals as fluoride for years. Now a new scientific study, published in The Lancet and recently reported in TIME Magazine’s health and family section has revealed that far from being safe these chemicals are harming us, and especially our kids. They are now revealed to be contributing to ADHD and similar disorders and are lowering the IQ of our kids, yet these chemicals are added to our foods, our toothpastes, and our drinking water and declared to be safe, when they are known to be just the opposite. Since 2006 when the fi rst study by the scientists responsible for the current fi ndings was released, there has been a marked increase in brain disorders amongst children. Fluoride added to drinking water was linked to a seven-point reduction in IQ in children; this reduction lasts for life and can also be linked to disruptive behaviour in children and adolescents. Chlorpyrifos, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, tetrachloroethylene and polybrominated diphenyl ethers were other commonly used chemicals that cause behavioural and cognitive problems and damage health in both children and adults. These are found in solvents and pesticides so you can see why we poor Naturopaths push eating organic foods so hard. Even small amounts of these substances can cause developmental and health problems. The problem is that we don’t just get a little we get a whole lot in small doses and they join together in what is called a synergistic effect, which simply means each adds its bit and increases the effect of the other, so 1 milligram of a substance has the effect of perhaps 10 milligrams. If you add them all together as is what happens in pesticides applied to foods you get a huge toxic mess going into your digestive system.

I

f you’re looking to take out a home loan and purchase a new piece of property, you’re probably also thinking about selling your own home. Unfortunately, many homeowners in Australia fi nd disappointment when they fi nd out how much they are able to sell their house for in today’s economy. Fortunately, there are some small actions you can take now to improve the selling price. • Focus on the exterior First impressions mean a lot, even for potential home buyers. Though the interior of your home may be gorgeous, if the outside is lacklustre, you’ll have trouble getting interested parties through the door. You don’t have to spend much money to repaint your front porch or add a few flowering plants to your front yard. Taking the time to do so will make your house much more appealing to passers-by. • Consult a staging professional Some people simply have an eye for decoration, and hiring one of these individuals, known as staging professionals, to give your home a makeover can make a big difference. Most stagers can work within your budget – you can have them work on one room or your entire home. By the time they’re done, your place will be much more sellable. • Wait it out Housing markets change frequently, so if you’re growing frustrated with the offers your home is fetching it may be best to wait. • Download the BOQ Property App Rather than focusing on housing prices and statistics for Australia as a whole, look for data specific to your area. The BOQ Property App provides full property reports.

The good doctor

W

e all know how important it is to have regular checkups at our doctors. Check our cholesterol, blood pressure, potential skin cancers, that sort of thing. And even though the report from our doctor might not always be the good news we are hoping for, most of us, even if it is reluctantly, will do what our doctor says. And of course, to not follow our doctor’s directions can lead to serious consequences. The Bible reveals Jesus as making a significant, serious diagnosis of our human condition. Jesus declares that “It is not the healthy who need a doctor but the sick”. As Jesus’ ministry here on earth continues, and as our own experience reveals, we see that the sickness Jesus is speaking of, is not a sickness that can be healed with antibiotics or better hospitals, nor is it a sickness to be fixed with more education or us trying to live better. Jesus, the good doctor, diagnoses a sickness in our hearts; a sickness in our inner being. And sadly, it is a terminal sickness, caused by the fact that each of us has turned away from the source of life, God Himself, not giving Him the honour He rightly deserves. The good news of the Bible, is that in the event we remember each Easter, Jesus dies on the cross, taking our sickness upon on himself, and ultimately three days rising to life, thus making it possible for each of us to be healed of our sickness and given new life, eternal life with God. Our challenge is to humbly come to Jesus and receive the generous gift of new life.

GLENDENNING

Among the world’s best: Lexus thrilled with nomination exus IS sedan has been nominated in two categories of the 2014 World Car of the Year (WCOTY) Awards. Due to be announced at the New York International Motor Show in April, the sharply styled IS sedan has been nominated in both the overall car of the year and design of the year categories. 22 vehicles in total were nominated for the overall award, with just 10 selected for design of the year. Judged by nearly 70 motoring journalists from around the globe, including two from Australia, the not-for-profit awards are said to be carried out with the utmost objectivity, credibility and integrity. Lexus Australia Chief Executive, Sean

Hanley said the nomination recognises that Lexus is delivering on its promise to offer vehicles that excite and perform. “The new IS Line was designed from the outset to deliver engaging driving dynamics wrapped in an exciting design, and the recent World Car of the Year nomination reinforces that we have achieved our goals,” he said. “The IS sedan is a stunning vehicle. It offers consumers something unique and provides a clear statement about our future design direction.” Lexus last won a WCOTY award in 2007 for the LS 460 luxury saloon. The Awards will be announced on Thursday, April 17 at the new York International Motor Show.

Harness Racing A huge program of 10 races was provided for patrons at the Penrith Paceway last Thursday night. Race one saw the favourite Gooday Stride going down to Left Neglected at the odds of $13.10. Driver John O’Shea sat on the favourite then outsprinted it in the run up the home straight. In the second race Always In My Pocket ($4.00) lived up to his name and with Gavin Fitzpatrick aboard came home strongly to defeat Icy River. Persona ($3.50) kept up his consistent form and after a tussle to get the lead in race three, Josh Osborne kept him going to just get home in front of Domestic Art. Megs Ferrari ($2.70) made it three wins from his last four starts when driver Paul Sapio got him home to win from the well backed Ruinate in race four.

Penrith on Friday, February 28 at 5pm. Windsor President Geoff Hatch welcomed me from the RNSWBA along with NDBA President Neil Workman and Chairman Match Col Crossingham to his Presidents and Officers Day last Sunday. The rain halted the possibility of a few ends so during a fi ne lunch provided by their ladies Geoff nominated Neil Cant and Eddie Dries to receive the RNSWBA Merit Badges with Terry Flannigan and Bill Thorn being awarded the Tie Bars. Arthur Rutter and Clayton Hollebon received the NDBA “Valuable Members” awards from Neil Workman. The Ladies Tie Bars were awarded to Valda Tho rn, Ann McVicar and Cecily Foster. The NDBA is the hosting district for all Zone 5 events this year so keep an eye on your noticeboards!

73

Lorraine Pozza Jim Douglas was able to get Major Works off the inside over the last 250m then swamp the leaders in a tight fi nish at odds of $5.90 in the fi fth race. Well done Jim. Lagoon Stride ($19.50) sat three wide without cover for the last lap but kept going for driver Amanda Turnbull and deservedly took the honours in the sixth. Well supported Marion Keisker ($3.60) driven by Josh Willick was able to lead from gate one in race seven. Only On Slim ($4.90) had to do plenty of work coming from near last in the last lap to lead on straightening up with driver Blake Fitzpatrick working over time for the win. Major Joy ($4.00) fi nally scored a win in the ninth event. Me Cobber ($20.00) with driver Jarrod Alchin won the tenth and sent some punters home happy.

In a two-day match taking place at Howell Oval, UNSW batted fi rst scoring a very low 86. Penrith’s Pat Jackson was best with the ball taking 6/30. When Penrith hit the crease they were 0/17 before stumps, Pat Jackson again leading the way, this time with the bat, scoring 15 not out. Stars on show: Sellout crowd tipped for Juventus visit

W

NATHAN TAYLOR

estern Sydney Wanderers stars are hopeful they’ll get a chance to represent the A-League All Stars when they do battle with Italian giant Juventus on August 10 at ANZ Stadium. Tickets for the blockbuster clash went on sale this week with thousands of tickets already snapped up by fans. “To have a club of the calibre of Juventus FC come to Sydney is a massive coup for football in Australia,” FFA boss David Gallop said.

“To put it in perspective, it’s very possible that of the 24 players in the Juventus FC fi rst team squad, 16 players could be at the 2014 FIFA World Cup representing eight different nations.” Wanderworld columnist and Wanderers goalkeeper Ante Covic desperately wants to be part of the action again after he played in last year’s All Stars match against Manchester United. “Having the opportunity to come up against the world’s best players doesn’t happen too often, so if the chance to do it again came up I’d grab it with both hands for sure,” he said. See today’s Wanderworld for more.

ricket personality Kerry O’Keeffe’s trademark laugh stole the show at Penrith Cricket Club’s annual Captain’s Lunch last Friday. The recently retired ABC cricket commentator and former Australian player had the packed Chairman’s Lounge at Penrith Stadium in stitches with his entertaining cricket stories, which at times resembled a stand-up comic routine. Also appearing during the four hour function was 1991 premiership winner and

Panthers legend, Royce Simmons. First grade captain Matthew Halse, whose side is currently second in the Sydney Grade Cricket competition, said he was surprised at how well his team was doing with just a few rounds left. “Obviously as each year starts you’re hopeful that you’ll have a bit of success along the way but we’re playing some good cricket [this season],” he said. The Captain’s Lunch raised money for the local club by auctioning off a number of prized sporting items including a signed and framed Ricky Ponting cricket bat as well as a Panthers 1991 jersey signed by Simmons and legend Greg Alexander.

Idris scores a try in his Panthers debut, while the club nets $130,000 at Nines

t’s been a profitable whirlwind trip to New Zealand for the Penrith Panthers after they took home $130,000 for making the quarter fi nal stage of the inaugural Auckland Nines competition. Despite losing George Jennings (elbow) and Eto Nabuli (knee) to injury in their quarter fi nal loss to eventual tournament winners North Queensland, the Nines was an overall success for the club. The Panthers topped their pool, winning two of their three round-robin games. Victories came against Melbourne in a scrappy affair 14-11, and St George-Illawarra in a much more polished performance 23-8. The Panthers, however, lost both their games on the second day of the tournament, against South Sydney in their fi nal pool game 18-16, and against the Cowboys in the quarter fi nals 22-12. The tournament also saw the Panthers debut of new five-eighth Jamie Soward who had a relatively quiet impact but did have a hand in many of Penrith’s tries. Meanwhile, the Panthers also unleashed new recruits Jamal Idris, Peter Wallace and Brent Kite in a trial against the Wentworthville Magpies at Penrith Stadium last Saturday afternoon. The Panthers fielded a top side featuring not only their new recruits but experienced campaigners Tim Grant, Nigel Plum, David Simmons and James Segeyaro. Idris kicked off the scoring for the home side, barging his way over the line in devastating fashion while last year’s NRL leading try scorer David Simmons also

got his 2014 campaign off to a fantastic start with a hat trick of tries in the 56-10 thrashing. Returning Panthers halfback Peter Wallace, who is likely to partner Soward in the halves this season, put on a clinical performance steering the side made up of NRL and NSW Cup talent with ease.

He also slotted over seven goals from eight attempts. A crowd of around 1000 people turned out to watch the trials on Saturday, keen to see Idris in particular in a Panthers jumper for the fi rst time. A trial involving Penrith’s Holden Cup team followed the NRL match.

Jack’s green and gold dream

17-year-old cyclist selected to represent Australia in South Korea later this year

ike most kids, Jack Edwards was a sports mad child growing up. He dabbled in everything from basketball to soccer and even cycling. Not once did he envision a sport he did on a casual basis as a kid would turn into a dream career. These days the rangy 17-year-old, who used to ride bikes for fun, has transformed himself into a cycling machine and was last week selected to represent Australia for a second straight year at the 2014 World Junior Track Championships in South Korea in August. The Penrith Cycling Club cyclist believes representing his country two years in a row proves he deserves to be one of Australia’s biggest up and coming cycling hopes. “I competed at the Junior World’s last year in Scotland, and to make the team again shows it wasn’t a fluke the fi rst time,” Edwards told the Weekender. “I was very proud to represent Australia the fi rst time, I was overwhelmed. I don’t even think my family saw it coming to be honest, so I can’t wait to do it all over again.” Edwards, who’s predominantly a track cyclist racing in veledromes, will look to compete in Australia’s team pursuit team as well as defend his own title in the omnium. However, he may be up for a bit of a surprise if rumours about Seoul’s veledrome track are true. “I heard it’s an outdoor track which is unusual for that kind of competition,” Edwards said. “It’s also concrete as opposed to wooden

and the track is 333m in length compared to the Olympic standard 250m. “It will be a lot different to what I’m used to but I think it will be good. We’ve got a couple of outdoor tracks in Australia and

I’ve been racing on them a fair bit.” Last year Edwards won the prestigious NSW Sports Federation Junior Sportsperson of the Year award, which came as somewhat of a surprise for the recent school graduate.

He’s currently in daily training to one day achieve his ultimate dream. “I hope to compete in the Olympics on the track or a professional team on the road racing grand tours,” he said.
