TOM HUMBLE WILL PLAY THIS WEEKEND

Rabbitohs look dangerous A

FTER FACING THE UNKNOWN prospects of Canberra and the Wests Tigers in the first two rounds of the season, this weekend the Panthers face an opposition that will almost certainly play finals football, if not be there at ANZ Stadium on the first Sunday of October. The South Sydney Rabbitohs are without doubt a true threat to this year’s premiership, and with a side littered with raw talent including Greg Inglis, Adam Reynolds, Nathan Merritt and Issac Luke, it is no

the new attitude at Penrith that when down 18-6, the side continued to rally and would have set up a grandstand finish if it wasn’t for Sika Manu’s third try being called back by a questionable refereeing decision.

COOTE OUT INJURED One of the big challenges Penrith face now is life without Lachlan Coote for the remainder of the season. With his settling in period at five-eighth continuing, Coote was dealt a major blow on Sunday when

After a strong first-up performance, Walsh was pretty ordinary against the Tigers once Coote left the field, and again the last tackle plays hurt Penrith. They failed to put all that much pressure on the Tigers, and it is repeat sets and weight of possession that will ultimately win football games.

RABBITOHS BOAST STAR POWER Whether it be powerhouse fullback Greg Inglis, dynamic halfback Adam Reynolds or the well-rested Sam Burgess, Souths

space, he will be unstoppable all afternoon. He had a quiet game against the Sharks on Monday, which is probably the worst possible news for the Panthers.

THE MANU FACTOR For Penrith, it is new recruit Sika Manu who could make a big difference in this game. After scoring a try in the opening round against Canberra, the former Melbourne premiership winner bagged a double against the Tigers and should have claimed a hat-

After 73 matches against each other, the Rabbitohs hold a slight advantage, having won 40 games to Penrith’s 32. There’s been just one draw between these two proud clubs. wonder most expect them to rack up a big score against Penrith on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers found themselves out of sorts against the Wests Tigers last weekend, particularly after losing five-eighth Lachlan Coote early in the game, but it must be said that the side has stepped up a few notches in professionalism, as the Panthers of 2011 or 2012 may well have had half a dozen more tries put on them in the second half at Campbelltown Stadium. It is a testament to

he tore his pectoral muscle, putting him on the sidelines and giving Tom Humble an opportunity in the halves. I am surprised that Humble was given the opportunity ahead of Blake Austin, who was solid in the halves in a trial in Bathurst last month and seemed the most logical choice. That said, Humble has been in the number six jumper for the Wolves and deserves his shot. He’ll need to provide some quality back-up to the inconsistent Luke Walsh.

are one side in the NRL without any real question marks over any of the positions in their squad. That makes life hard for Penrith, who with a new team and cattle not quite the class of players like Inglis and Reynolds, need to find weaknesses in sides to gain an advantage. Last year, Souths blew Penrith off the mark in the opening 20 minutes of this corresponding game and they’ll do the same again unless Penrith really aim up in defence in those early sets. Should Inglis find open

trick late in the game. He is a real attacking weapon who can leave defenders for dead if given some good ball, and he will be relied upon for some big minutes this Sunday.

THE FINAL WORD If Souths play like they did on Monday, Penrith is a big hope of an upset win. But if their star players shine, it is hard to imagine how Penrith will be able to contain them. But where there’s life, there’s hope. EXTRATIME | 3

Walsh ignores the critics LUKE WALSH IS OFTEN CRITICISED BY THE PANTHERS’ FAITHFUL, BUT THE DETERMINED NUMBER SEVEN SAYS HE DOESN’T LET THE NEGATIVITY, OR RUMOURS ABOUT HIS FUTURE, GET HIM DOWN...

A

LL HALFBACKS PLAYING IN the NRL are scrutinised from time to time, some more than others. But perhaps amongst Penrith fans, no number seven of the last decade has been more heavily scrutinised than current halfback Luke Walsh. Walsh, who joined the Panthers in 2009 from Newcastle, had a breakout season the following year when the club finished a

surprising second on the premiership table on the back of his sharp kicking game. Supporters thought the club had found their next Craig Gower or Greg Alexander, but it was a mediocre 2011 and 2012 for Walsh that had the fans, and even the club, talking about a new halfback. 25-year-old Walsh appeared unbothered when Extra Time asked him about always being under the microscope.

“No I don’t really care one bit, [it] doesn’t bother me at all,” he said. “If you start to worry about what other people are saying it’s only going to get you down.” Walsh admitted he also wasn’t too concerned when the club was very publicly chasing Australian and Queensland fiveeighth Johnathan Thurston – the man who could have potentially taken his job at the club for the 2014 season and beyond. “It didn’t really worry me, wouldn’t have fazed me anyway if he came,” he said. “One way or another he’s happy now, he’s got his million dollars.”

So with the club missing out on Thurston, who signed a multi-million dollar contract extension with the Cowboys, will they now turn their attention to another half or put their faith in Walsh for the long term? Walsh hopes they stick with him, but now has to deal with the fact that his new partner in crime in the halves, Lachlan Coote, will be missing for the rest of the season. Prior to Coote being injured, Walsh said: “I think Cootey has lifted my game and our combination is only going to get better and better I reckon. He has taken off a lot more pressure especially being a left foot kicker, that’s helped a lot.”

PRIDDO’S POINT WITH LUKE PRIDDIS

Pressure on Price builds 2003 Clive Churchill Medal winner Luke Priddis played more than 300 National Rugby League matches, including 162 for the Penrith Panthers

E

ARLY ON WE HAVE two standout performers in this year’s premiership in the Storm and the Eagles with Cooper Cronk simply outstanding and surely pushing Johnathan Thurston as the game’s premier half. Souths, the other unbeaten side, from my mind still need to work on their consistency and how young Reynolds continues to develop will have a big bearing on their season and where they end up in 2013. I am struggling to see much happening for the Dragons in 2013 unless they give their young recruit Josh Drinkwater a shot in the halves, so how long will coach Steve Price (pictured) wait to make such a change? You don’t always become best mates with

everyone in your team but when it comes to backing up each member of your team sticking tight as a unit is a priority. With Josh Dugan, there certainly must be some real issues with this guy on numerous fronts given the word from the nation’s capital was that his own team mates no longer wanted him at the club even though on his day he is a class player. The Panthers have questions being posed on numerous fronts. Firstly what is the solution to the halves given Coote’s injury with the apparent lack of depth in this area? Secondly, now Thurston is staying in North Queensland who is plan B in regards to the player they believe the future of the club can be built around?

Finally, will Gus Gould stay in his current role post 2013/14 with continuing whispers doing the rounds saying he won’t? I would think the competitor in him would find it hard to leave without the job being finished at the foot of the Mountains. The answers to these questions will come but I would certainly love to see the Panthers be the powerhouse they should be with the great junior base available to them that has developed some class players over the years. Finally, congratulations to former Penrith local Steve Turner for his career which unfortunately came to a premature end this week due to injury. Here’s to more great games in the NRL this weekend.

STARTING FROM THE BENCH THIS SEASON DOESN’T WORRY FORWARD CLINT NEWTON ONE BIT. IN FACT, HE’S LOVING THE OPPORTUNITY IT PRESENTS TO MAKE AN IMPACT WHEN IT MATTERS MOST...

C

LINT NEWTON IS KNOWN to Penrith supporters as the people’s champion, and for that very reason he’s assigned himself the task of letting all his new teammates know just how important the Panthers club is to the local area. Speaking with Extra Time, Newton said he’s been emphasising to all of Penrith’s newest recruits the importance of having a winning culture not only for themselves but for the loyal fans. “It’s important for the players to know this club has a strong support base but those supporters haven’t had much to cheer about over the last few years, which is disappointing,” he said. “Penrith has very passionate supporters and obviously we want the players who have come in to learn about what we worked hard on last year and what we’re planning for in the future, like creating our own destiny with our own actions.” Newton joined the Panthers from the English Super League last season and has already become a crowd favourite due his positive attitude and strong leadership skills.

However, with new buys Sika Manu and Lewis Brown firmly entrenched into the second row, Newton has found himself in somewhat of a different position this season – coming off the bench. “I still see it as an extremely important position for the team,” he said. “The time I’m on the field all I have to worry about is doing my job, and making sure what I contribute is going towards us winning. I’ve always maintained that I’d rather play five minutes in a winning team than 80 minutes in a losing team.” The 140 NRL game veteran said he wasn’t concerned playing off the bench and revealed coach Ivan Cleary wanted him, this year, to boost the intensity and morale of the side when he made his way on to the field. “This is a team game and as I said the role in the team is up to how you want to approach it,” he said. “If you see that (starting from the bench) as a slap in the face then realistically you don’t have the team’s best interests at heart.” Newton is currently serving the final year of his contract at the Panthers.

Coote gone for the season PENRITH’S HALVES COMBINATION HAS BEEN TORN APART WITH LACHLAN COOTE RULED OUT FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON IN A DEVASTATING BLOW TO THE CLUB’S FINALS PROSPECTS...

P

ENRITH HAS BEEN DEALT a massive blow with five-eighth Lachlan Coote ruled out for the rest of the season. Coote tore his pectoral muscle early in last Sunday’s clash with the Wests Tigers. On Monday afternoon, Coote’s worst fears were confirmed when scans revealed he would require immediate surgery for the injury, putting him out of action of the rest of the 2013 NRL season.

It was originally hoped that Coote, who only made the permanent switch from fullback to five-eighth this season, would only miss between six and eight weeks. Panthers boss Phil Gould broke the news that Coote’s season was over on Twitter, saying it was “terrible luck” for the Panthers. The loss of Coote on Sunday proved a major disruption to the Panthers, who lost their way as the Tigers took control of the

game at Campbelltown Stadium, winning 28-18 to secure their first win of the year. “It definitely affected our attack,” coach Ivan Cleary said after the game on Sunday. “But we never came here wanting to allow the Tigers to score that many points, so whilst it may have affected our attack, we’ll look back and there were some tries we conceded where we just weren’t up to scratch.” Coote, a Windsor Wolves junior who turns 23 next month, will be replaced at five-eighth by Tom Humble, who joined the Panthers this season after stints with the Wests Tigers and Parramatta.

The naming of Humble was a major shock with most expecting that former Australian Schoolboys junior Blake Austin, who played 12 first grade games last year, would get the nod to partner Luke Walsh in the halves. Humble has played 21 first grade games, including 15 with the Tigers last year. He has scored four career tries. Penrith’s injury woes don’t end with Coote, with forward Jeremy Latimore, who made a positive debut against the Raiders in round one, out for at least half of the season with an ankle injury. Centre James Roberts is also out with an ankle injury for an indefinite period.

Injury problems hit under 20’s A TRIO OF STARS COULD MISS THIS SUNDAY’S UNDER 20’S CLASH AT PENRITH STADIUM...

I

STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR

T MAY ONLY BE round three but the Penrith Panthers Holden Cup side are already on top of the competition after defeating both 2012 grand finalists in consecutive weeks. Last Sunday the Panthers outclassed Wests Tigers at Campbelltown Stadium, defeating the premiers 30-18. The afternoon, however, belonged to boom Panthers fullback Kieran Moss, who stole the show with three spectacular tries and set up a number of others. Panthers NYC coach Garth Brennan said Moss was by far the standout player of the game against the Tigers. “When you score three tries in a game you’re always going to get noticed,” he said. “I also thought young Jarrod Wilson was very good and Bryce Cartwright has been strong in both games this season.” The only setback to come out of the game was injuries to three key players including exciting winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak,

We n o have w a

top centre George Jennings and promising halfback Sam Scarlett. Despite being named earlier in the week, all three players are now in serious doubt to face the South Sydney Rabbitohs in this Sunday’s blockbuster clash at Penrith Stadium. “George has a quadricep strain and Dallin has a knee injury,” Brennan said. For halfback Sam Scarlett his injury couldn’t come at worse time after performing brilliantly in his debut against the Raiders before backing it up with another strong performance last weekend. “Sam’s first game was probably his better game,” Brennan said. “Over the weekend he was solid but he took a knock early which didn’t help. He’s been doing a fairly good job but probably won’t play on Sunday.” Penrith’s performance against the Tigers was nothing short of gutsy, reduced to 15 men in the second half and battling strong winds. On Sunday the side will need to show that same amount of determination if they’re to overcome a strong South Sydney line-up

featuring much talked about five-eighth, Dylan Walker. “The Bunnies have always had a very strong side,” Brennan said. “They got beaten after the siren in round one by the Roosters but had a convincing win on Monday night against Cronulla. They certainly have some talent in their side that’s for sure, plenty of strike power across the park.” Meanwhile in the NSW Cup, the Windsor Wolves enjoyed their first win of the season, defeating the Wests Tigers 44-42 at Campbelltown. This week the Wolfpack travel north to take on the non-NRL affiliated club, the Wyong Roos. It will be interesting occasion for the Wolves as they’ll come face to face with some former teammates on Sunday including ex-Penrith backs Etu Uaisele and Junior Tia-Kilifi. Windsor will be without five-eighth Tom Humble, who has been promoted to first grade, with Blake Austin taking his place in the halves. Austin had a brilliant game against the Tigers, scoring three tries.

ANTHERS HARDMAN NIGEL PLUM shaved off his golden locks in front of 30 preschoolers in Cranebrook last Friday. 29-year-old Plum joined Penrith local Terrna Uru as she raised money for the Leukemia Foundation, as part of this year’s popular World’s Greatest Shave. Plum and Mrs Uru went bald as the children from Sweetpeas Kindergarten & Long Daycare Centre watched on in amazement. The kids have spent the past few weeks learning about children with Leukemia. The 103kg monster prop even had a go at shaving Mrs Uru’s head himself but probably won’t be enrolling in a hairdressing apprenticeship post-footy. Penrith was quick to deny rumours last week that they may be interested in signing outcast Canberra fullback Josh Dugan. As I said last week, don’t be surprised if Penrith is linked to every player on the market between now and the end of the season, given the amount of money they have in the bank. The Dugan rumour, however, was quite a stretch. Whilst part of the reason the Panthers allowed Michael Jennings to switch to the Roosters was dollar-related, his attitude was an enormous part of it as well. Don’t think for a second that Ivan Cleary is going to let a player like Dugan into the squad after finally releasing himself of the Jennings headache.

LUKE PRIDDIS

Panthers’ resident podcasters, Strawbs and Teach, were without a venue to record their popular show, ‘Panthers Weekly’ last week after Panthers management pulled the pin on the podcast being recorded inside one of the stadium’s boxes. The pair had been recording their show from Penrith HQ for the past two seasons when they got the devastating news early last week that they had to find a new venue. However, the decision was overturned last weekend and they are now back in their comfortable surroundings. It’s important to know these boys do the show every week for free and are die-hard supporters of the club. It appears Panthers boss Phil Gould has given up signing New Zealand Warriors star Feleti Meteo - well so he says. Gus told the Daily Telegraph the club doesn’t plan to sign any more players from across the ditch or anywhere else in the NRL for that matter, and would much rather focus on retention of juniors. But it’s hard to tell whether Gus is telling the truth or keeping his cards close to his chest. It was only late last year when Panthers sent out a press release saying they weren’t chasing Johnathan Thurston, when clearly everyone knew they were. While securing juniors is very important, the club shouldn’t be giving up in continuing to bolster next year’s roster with quality, proven players if they become available.

Pressure of coaching

T

HEY ARE THE EXPRESSIONS of a man with one of the toughest jobs in Australian sport. Charged with turning around a club that has been to hell and back in the past few years, Panthers coach Ivan Cleary is aiming to prove the critics wrong this season and take the Panthers to the finals. The longest serving coach in Warriors history, Cleary will coach his 181st first grade match this weekend and will clock up 200

games in the latter part of the season. It’s a mighty achievement for a man who only stopped playing top grade football a decade ago and has been thrust head first in the roller coaster world of coaching. For Cleary, his hopes and dreams for the Panthers in the long term are obvious. “I dream about premierships all the time. It’s not hard to work out where you want to be when you wake up in the morning,” Cleary said during the pre-season. EXTRATIME | 13

JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE WITH YVONNE PURTELL

Why not give footy a go? YVONNE Purtell is the manager of the Penrith and District Junior Rugby League, nurturing our young footy talent

A

RE YOU BETWEEN FOUR and eight-years-old and want to play rugby league but not too sure if you will like it? Well why not come and join in our mini ‘Come and Try’ day we are holding on Sunday, April 15 at Peter Van Hasselt Fields, Shalvey (PCYC Mt Druitt’s home ground). Even if you have played before and want to come along and be part of the day you can. The day will cost you nothing and we will run some clinics and games and have something available for everyone. For numbers we need you to register online through our website at http://penrith. league.com.au. If you ‘Come and Try’ and enjoy it you will be able to register on the day with one of our clubs. If you ‘Come and Try’ and don’t think you are ready to play every week, that’s fine as long as you enjoy yourself on the day. Mums and dads, there will be something for you on the day as well... why not register for the Feel Good Footy TAG day with all funds raised going to local community groups.

Full details and registrations can be found on our website so check them out now! This weekend will see another busy weekend for our clubs who will be involved in trial games across the district. The Emu Plains club, following their Saturday trials will be hosting the Possible v Probable NSW Women’s Rugby League game. This can be seen at Leonay Oval on Saturday, March 23 kicking off at 3.45pm. Congratulations to our Harold Matthews and SG Ball squads who both had wins on the weekend over the Western Sydney Academy of Sport. This weekend they take on Illawarra at Centrebet Stadium with the Harold Matthews kicking off at 12.00noon and SG Ball at 1.30pm. Come along and support the boys with only three games of competition remaining. The junior league is moving into the world of social media so you can now follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/penrithjuniors and Twitter @ penrith_juniors.
