Family business rises from the ashes Six months after fire tore through his shop, Hanif Adam is back in business and serving the community JADE ALIPRANDI
lmost six months after his store went up in flames, Hanif Adam’s Werrington County Pharmacy is back open for business. In July, Mr Adam was forced to clean up the ash-filled building but was fortunate enough to have saved his customers’ records thanks to ‘cloud’ software. As he owns businesses in Cranebrook and Jordan Springs, Mr Adam was able to temporarily keep his family-owned Werrington County business going, albeit remotely. He said the customers were there with him through it all. “I just want to thank the customers for being with us through the hard times and for being so supportive,” Mr Adam said. “They have helped us so much and kept using our pharmacy for their needs which, in turn, really helped us.” The business is now Terry White Chemmart, one of the first businesses to have the newly merged pharmacy name. “We wanted to be a part of this new format because there is just a wider range of products available at a competitive rate,” Mr Adam said.

“Bad things can make you disheartened but it’s important to not let it get to you – disaster comes and happens but we’ve picked ourselves back up and are ready to go again,” he said.
The new pharmacy opened its doors this week. It’s located at Shop 5 in Werrington County Shopping Village on Dunheved Road.

NEED MORE TIME TO SHOP? WE’RE OPEN LONGER
oday marks the final edition of the Weekender for 2016, bringing the curtain down on an incredibly busy year for the region. It was a year that brought us both a Federal and Local Government election, with Emma Husar producing a stunning upset in Lindsay, while a mix of regular and fresh faces make up the new-look Penrith City Council. There were stories that shocked us, like the double shooting at Nepean Hospital’s Emergency Department back in January, and those that inspired us, like Bobby Webber’s incredibly brave battle against all of the odds. This year the Weekender has presented literally thousands of stories to you, pieces that I am sure evoke the same range of emotions in you that our team gets when writing them. Anger, happiness, pride, shame, frustration, elation. It’s a roller coaster ride. On the sporting front, we saw the emergence of the Penrith Panthers as a true NRL threat, witnessed the GWS Giants soar to new levels and continue to watch as the Wanderers find their way with a new-look squad in 2016/17. We also proudly covered so many stories focused on the grassroots of sport, covering everything from golf to lawn bowls, rugby union, rugby league, soccer, basketball, baseball, athletics... the list goes on and on. One thing that stands tall in what we do is the pride that we have in Penrith. As a city we don’t do everything right, but why would you want to live anywhere else? Penrith constantly proves itself as a vibrant, exciting and progressive place to live, work and play.
T
“You are the reason we come to work every day”
For me personally, 2016 can go and get stuffed – and I apologise for being so direct. I’ve lost both my grandmother and father this year, but was so grateful for the support I received from within the Penrith community, including many of you whom I’ve never met but have an obvious connection with through this column and the Weekender. I also managed to take my first sick days in my eight years as Editor of the Weekender thanks to a nasty gall bladder that is now well and truly gone from my body. I feel that 2016 has delivered a lesson or two that I’ll benefit from moving forward, I’m just not sure what it is yet. One thing you realise, particularly when you do a job like this, is that life constantly throws up surprises, and the best we can do is learn from the experiences, grow from those teachings and try to be better and stronger people.
As always at this time of the year I’d like to acknowledge a number of people who have contributed to ensuring the Weekender remains the region’s leading local newspaper. Firstly I’d like to thank my brilliant and dedicated editorial team – Nathan, Jade, Emily, Alena, Kate and Erin – who do an incredible job at keeping this region informed and up-to-date. Please never underestimate how important it is to have a locally based newsroom with journalists who live and breathe the city that they write about each and every week. Thank you to Chris and the sales team – Andrew, Linda, James, Ali, Daniel and Katie – for continuing to deliver effective and strong solutions for our clients. Thank you to Irene, Maddy and Ian in our production team for making everything ‘sing’ every week, and to Karlee, Chantelle, Sarah and Amelia for your continued hard work keeping everything on track. And to our photographers Melinda and Megan, well done on capturing the moments that mattered in 2016. I’d like to thank all of our columnists for their continued contributions, and our advertisers for their ongoing support of a truly local, independent newspaper. Last but not least, thank you to everyone who continues to read the Weekender every week – you are the reason we come to work every day. The Weekender’s first edition of 2017 will be on Friday, January 13. On behalf of our CEO Kathryn Garton and myself, have a Merry Christmas and a wonderful festive season. See you in 2017.

Officer made his Mark over 42 years Emotional scenes as long-serving Senior Constable is farewelled by his colleagues at St Marys EMILY NEWTON
t was a bittersweet farewell for Senior Constable Mark Elliott, saying goodbye to a long and prosperous career with the NSW Police Force spanning 42 and a half years. For the past decade, he has been stationed at St Marys Local Area Command, where he was saluted by his colleagues for the final time last week. Marched out by Superintendent Greg Peters, pride radiated from Senior Constable Elliott’s face as he was sent off to the sound of a bag piper at 1.30pm last Thursday, December 15. “It hasn’t been all good, it hasn’t been all bad, but I have enjoyed what I did... hopefully I’ve assisted the community,” Senior Constable Elliott said. “I’ve lived the majority of my life in western Sydney... I enjoy the openness of it. “Out here it’s a much more spread out community. There’s so much more to travel.” In his final speech to his colleagues, Senior Constable Elliott struggled to get his last three words out, inspired from the conclusion of TV series ‘M*A*S*H’: “Goodbye, Farewell and Amen”.
I

“I just couldn’t get the final words out... I nearly lost it a couple of times,” he said. “I’m nothing special, I’m just me.” Executive Manager, Le Alchin, disagrees and said it will be hard to imagine the command without Senior Constable Elliott. “It’s been a very emotional day. It’s important that we recognise his achievements,” she said. From having his foot run over to cracking the bottom of his knee in defensive training, Senior Constable Elliott has enjoyed a career full of anecdotes and positive memories. “It was 42 years, five months and seven days, not that I’ve been counting,” he laughed. Senior Constable Elliott has so far enjoyed his first week of retirement surrounded by family. When asked about his future plans, he answered with a cheeky laughter that the station is sure to miss. “I might do some washing and after that I think I’ll cut the back grass,” he said of his new daily routine. Senior Constable Elliott is taking each day as it comes, but plans to move to the Southern Highlands down the track, to be closer to his youngest children.

shopper who slipped and fell on grapes at the Coles Supermarket in Cambridge Gardens has been awarded more than $90,000 in damages. Sangeeta Guru, who now lives in Ballarat, Victoria, was shopping at Coles in October 2012 when she slipped on grapes in the fruit and vegetable section and lost her balance. She fell heavily to the floor, and sustained multiple soft tissue injuries to her limbs and torso. District Court Judge Leonard Levy awarded Ms Guru $90,130.45 last week for the chronic pain she still suffers. “The plaintiff was not on the premises to traverse an obstacle course. Whilst she was there, she was entitled to expect that the defendant would exercise reasonable care for her safety whilst she was shopping and looking for merchandise to purchase,” Judge Levy said. “During a moment of distraction whilst shopping for merchandise on display, it was entirely understandable that the plaintiff was unaware of risks posed by an existing spillage of grapes or other vegetable matter on the floor.” Ms Guru said that after she had fallen, an employee came to her aid and told her

The woman was shopping at Coles Cambridge Gardens when the incident occurred. Photo: Melinda Jane that she did not have time to clean up as she had been on her break. Judge Levy noted that while Ms Guru admitted she wasn’t looking at the floor as she was shopping, that was not a reasonable expectation in a supermarket. “The combination of the plaintiff’s problems have led her to experiencing emotional difficulties concerning her moods,” Judge Levy said. “She has become ‘snappy’ with her children, and she has become an unhappy
person. Her sleep is also impaired and her ability to carry out housework has also been impaired.” Judge Levy found that Coles were negligent and failed to take reasonable care for Ms Guru’s safety. Ms Guru had originally claimed more than $1 million in damages but Judge Levy found she was not entitled to damages for past economic loss, loss of superannuation, or domestic assistance as a result of the incident.

Help for vulnerable mothers-to-be State Government announces plan to assist drug addicted pregnant women JADE ALIPRANDI
regnant women across the Nepean region battling drug addiction will have more help to get clean after the announcement of $1.7 million in funding for services. The allocation, over four years, is part of the NSW Government’s $75 million enhancement to drug and alcohol treatment services to help pregnant women and mothers, who want to get their life back on track. Assistant Minister for Health, Pru Goward and Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, announced the funding on Tuesday afternoon at Nepean Hospital’s Centre For Addiction Medicine. Mr Ayres said the increase in funding would allow more pregnant women to undertake specialist drug and alcohol treatment. “This funding will see more vulnerable women in the area access specialist services throughout pregnancy and postpregnancy and ensure that longer term coordinated care is available to help them in their journey,” he said. “I’m particularly pleased that the funding will enhance the ice in pregnancy services to manage the complexities that these cases involve”.

ove over Santa’s sleigh, there’s a new festive mode of transportation in town. Busways has continued its tradition of spreading joy this festive season, decking their buses out in tinsel, ornaments and the Christmas spirit. “This is the third year for the Christmas bus initiative which is a fantastic project driven by the people working at our 16 bus depots,” Busways Marketing Manager, Donna Frith said. “The depot teams take great pride in decking out their buses to put a smile on the face of our passengers. “Each depot has chosen a local charity to raise funds for to give back to the local community. We’re hoping we can top the amounts raised in the previous years.” This year six Christmas buses at Busways Penrith are raising funds for Nepean Hospital’s Children’s Ward and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
M
Penrith MP Stuart Ayres, Assistant Health Minister Pru Goward, Director of the Centre for Addiction Medicine Gael Rao and doctor Karen Fisher. Photo: Melinda Jane Ms Goward added the funding was an important milestone in the NSW Government’s commitment to providing more access to life-changing treatment for women who want help. “We know addicts who are pregnant are often highly motivated to change, but drugs, a lack of parenting knowledge, and limited access to support networks

lans to house maximum security prisoners in an expanded jail at Emu Plains have been axed. Correctional Services Minister David Elliott said he has “heard community concerns” and that the “updated flood modelling provided to Justice Infrastructure shows that the flooding risk with the proposed increase in capacity could not be fully addressed at the site”. Uproar from the community ensued when the expansion of the centre was first announced earlier this year by the State Government. The plans included increasing the current 200 low security prison inmates to an additional 240 high security female and 400 high security male inmates. The expansion was part of the $3.8 billion plan in response to the rising prison population. Minister Elliott said the site was considered for a number of reasons, including the jobs it would bring to the region. “Emu Plains was considered for expansion because it is a large open site within the Sydney metropolitan region and would bring more than 400 new jobs and investment to the local economy,” he said.
P
The proposed expansion of Emu Plains Correctional Centre has formally been dumped. Photo: Melinda Jane “We are continuing to look at additional sites to increase capacity in the NSW correctional system.” State Member for Londonderry, Prue Car, said the news was a win for the community. She campaigned heavily against the prison expansion. “This proposal was always doomed to fail,” she said. “It was inappropriate for the location
and there was never any consultation with the surrounding communities.” State Penrith MP, Stuart Ayres, welcomed the decision. “Having raised concerns with Minister Elliott about flooding and flood evacuation routes I am pleased that those concerns were investigated and responded to with the correct decision,” Mr Ayres said.

There will be intermittent closures of the Allen Place access road and temporary closure of 67 car park spaces between January and March. Council apologies for any inconvenience these works may cause. Go to penrithcity.nsw.gov.au for more information.

Removing ramps Work will start in early January to remove the Allen Place elevated car park and ramps. Penrith Mayor John Thain said this 10-week project had been purposely scheduled for the first part of 2017 (and on some Saturday nights, Sundays and Sunday nights) to minimise the disruption to parking and businesses in the vicinity. “We apologise for any inconvenience these works may cause and we thank the community for their cooperation,” he said. There will be intermittent closures of the Allen Place access road and temporary closure of 67 car park spaces between January and March. This includes 24 parking spaces underneath the elevated structure which will be closed for the duration of works.
Christmas drive Federal Member for Lindsay, Emma Husar, has handed over hundreds of donated food items and Christmas gifts to the Nepean Domestic Violence Network (NDVN), following an overwhelming response to her inaugural Lindsay Christmas Drive. Over the past month, Ms Husar’s office has collected donations of non-perishable food items and Christmas gifts for the local service providers that make up the NDVN. “I would like to thank everyone who donated gifts and food over the past month. We have a wonderful community of people in Lindsay who care deeply about their neighbours,” Ms Husar said.

Meeting the family she never knew Family reunion 40 years in the making: “A Christmas to remember” JADE ALIPRANDI
lenmore Park resident Ana Martin has been given her very own Christmas miracle – reuniting with her family in Kenya. At just three-years-old, Ms Martin and her mother left Kenya to live in Croatia, with her father left behind. Now, at 44-years-old, Ms Martin has a whole family she never knew existed, including over 40 cousins. Speaking with the Weekender before flying out, Ms Martin said she was filled with mixed emotions. “I don’t know whether to laugh or cry and I feel like I’m going to throw up,” she laughed. “It’s just so surreal – I’m excited and anxious.” Ms Martin returns home to Australia on Christmas Eve after spending two weeks with her estranged family members. Not only is it her “best Christmas ever”, but Ms Martin now has constant contact with her newly-found family thanks to Facebook. “I was a bit hesitant at first to accept a message from this stranger – I had no idea who it was,” she said. “When I accepted and they said they were my cousin, a flood of emotions

“I had a small family and now I’m meeting all these people who are my family, I just want to cry,” she said. “I feel an avalanche of emotions but it’s definitely a Christmas to remember.”

Planning Proposal Reclassifying Public Land at 154 Henry Street and 13–61 Union Road, Penrith
The weekly views of Penrith’s Mayor
Penrith Cty Council wants to hear your views on a Planning Proposal to reclassify three parcels of Council-owned land. Two land parcels are located at 13–61 Union Road, Penrith (the Union Road car park) and one parcel is located at 154 Henry Street, Penrith (the Welch Place car park). The Planning Proposal recommends changing the classification of the land from Community Land to Operational Land. This is required to prepare the land to allow Council to consider opportunities for the sale, lease and/or development of the land, none of which can be considered if the land remains as Community Land. The Planning Proposal and supporting information is currently on public exhibition until Monday, 16 January 2017 at Penrith’s Civic Centre, Council’s Queen Street Centre and both Penrith and St Marys Libraries. The Planning Proposal and supporting information can also be viewed online at penrithcity.nsw.gov.au You are invited to view the Planning Proposal during the exhibition period and submit comments to Council in writing by 4pm on Monday, 16 January 2017. Please direct any submissions to: The General Manager (attention to ‘Danielle Fox’), Penrith City Council, PO Box 60, Penrith NSW 2751. Submissions can also be sent via email to cityplanningteam@penrithcity.nsw.gov.au In addition to the public exhibition, an independently chaired public hearing has been arranged to occur before any Council decision is made. The timing and venue for the public hearing will be published once the public exhibition has ended. If you have any questions about the Planning Proposal, or require further information, please contact Council’s Planner, Danielle Fox on 4732 8196, or Council’s City Planning Coordinator on 4732 8120, or you can email cityplanningteam@penrithcity.nsw.gov.au

Christmas message There is something magical about Christmas time. It gives us a chance to pause and look beyond gift shopping, Christmas menus and end of year parties. Christmas is a time that brings people together in the spirit of harmony and happiness. It’s a time to look back and give thanks – for our families, our friends and our good fortune, no matter how big or small. 2016 certainly has been an incredible year and our community has played a major part in making it a success. We had our inaugural Real Festival that was absolutely incredible, we continued our New West initiatives which will shape our city for the future, and the Mondo space between The Joan and Westfield Penrith has been transformed into an amazing place for the community. We welcomed the State Government’s announcement that work would commence to deliver an extra
430 spaces at Penrith Station and our calls for better infrastructure, including a rail connection to the airport, are being heard. We are also continuing our Cooling the City Strategy where Council is leading the way in cooling the city down by promoting natural cooling through landscaping, the addition of water features and clever design The State Government has started on the Nepean River “green bridge”, which (when completed in 2018) will be Australia’s longest shared bridge providing a 257m path for cyclists and pedestrians. We will continue to advocate at every opportunity on behalf of our community. And these are just a handful of successes from 2016. If you’re looking for things to do during the break, keep an eye on visitpenrith.com.au for all events and happenings in Penrith.

anta Claus has revealed what Penrith kids are asking him for this Christmas. Santa said the best part of hanging out at Westfield Penrith in the lead-up to Christmas Day is meeting all the kids. “It’s really the best time of the year,” Mr Claus told the Weekender. “I love meeting and talking to the children and their parents, and listening to what everyone wants.” Santa said the kids have been asking for plenty of presents this year.
“‘Paw Patrol’ has been extremely popular,” he said. “Other items include iPads, LEGO, ‘Frozen’-related items, Barbie dolls and heaps of technical gadgets. “Someone even asked for a Ferrari but I had to tell them that’s a little bit hard for Santa to do.” If a child asks for a pet, that’s when Santa calls on the help of mum or dad. “I have to explain it’s too hard for me to deliver animals. They would get very frightened in the sleigh, so I ask their parents to help with that one,” he said. While it’s constant work, Santa said it’s never boring or tiring.

Truckie appeals jail sentence after road rage incident
A tailgating truck driver who issued “raining blows” on a motorist he thought was playing games with him has been sentenced to 22 months jail. Bryan Edward Morfett, 52, faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday where he was sentenced for ‘damage property’, ‘reckless grievous bodily harm’ and ‘knowingly drive in a manner that menaces others’. Magistrate Georgia Knight found the defendant guilty of the sickening road rage attack following a hearing last month where she rejected his version of events. The court heard Mr Morfett tailgated victim Graham Ware in his Kenworth tipper truck for several kilometres along a windy road in August last year, before he overtook him, cut him off and jumped out of his cabin and started demanding to know why he was driving so slowly before punching Mr Ware’s ute window. “He was scared, he feared you’d break the window and get in,” Magistrate Knight said. Captured by two independent witnesses, Mr Morfett was observed “raining blows” to Mr Ware’s face before police arrived and intervened. Mr Ware subsequently required surgery, including having plates and screws inserted. Mr Morfett, who has no previous criminal record and tendered references claiming his behaviour was out of character, argued Mr Ware was brake-checking and intentionally goading him. However, Magistrate Knight said the defendant, who was transporting a 50 tonne load at the time, was not in a position of vulnerability and “could have taken many other options that you did not”. “He was clearly terrorised by your driving,” she said. “Because if anything had happened... like if you had to stop suddenly, your vehicle could have crushed his and killed him.” In a victim impact statement dated
three weeks after the incident, Ware, a horse stunt specialist, described how he still visualises the incident and thought the accused would kill him if he didn’t fight back. Magistrate Knight said the increased prevalence of road rage attacks must be “stamped out” and the community expected perpetrators to be harshly dealt with. He was sentenced to an 18-month non parole period, but lodged an application for appeal and was granted appeal bail on the same day. He is due to face Penrith District Court on January 30.
Footy star’s ex seeks to get charges dismissed
The former flame of Panthers rugby league star Bryce Cartwright will apply to have her charges thrown out on mental health grounds, Penrith Local Court has heard. Brittany Hura, 24, is charged with ‘intimidation with intent to fear’ and ‘using a carriage service to menace/harass or offend’ after she allegedly posted a number of serious threats on social media targeting Cartwright earlier this month. Wearing a white buttoned-up shirt rolled up at the sleeves, her long, straight black hair draped over shoulders, Hura stood at the back of the court flanked by two supporters on Tuesday morning as her matter was briefly mentioned before Magistrate Roger Clisdell. Hura’s lawyer Paul Cramer sought an adjournment in order to apply for a Section 32 application, which allows a magistrate to deal with a person under the Mental Health Act if they determine the accused was suffering mental illness at the time of the alleged commission of the offence. Mr Cramer also consented, without admissions, to the continuation of an interim apprehended violence order put in place to protect Cartwright’s safety. It is understood Hura was arrested last
Tuesday and granted conditional bail after the Panthers and Cartwright made a complaint to police. She is due back in court in February where her application will be determined. She is yet to formally enter a plea.
Father-of-three sent to jail after drug plan goes bad
A drug dealer busted with 56 grams of illicit drugs at Cranebrook has been sentenced to three years behind bars. Peter Jamie Ellery, 41, showed little emotion as Judge Mark Buscombe handed down his decision at Penrith District Court last Thursday. The court heard Ellery was pulled over on Andrews Road, Cranebrook in October last year following an undercover police investigation. Ellery, who was charged with ‘supplying a prohibited drug’ and breaching two bonds, was the sole occupant of the vehicle and appeared visibly “nervous and sweating” before a police search uncovered two ounces of the drug commonly referred to as ‘ice’. Judge Buscombe said the fact the father-of-three committed the crime while subject to two good behaviour bonds aggravated the offence. He said general deterrence “looms large” as the drug was “destroying the very fabric of our society”. The court heard Ellery’s role was limited to that of a “street seller” with Judge Buscombe saying the motivation was clearly for financial gain in order to repay a debt, “probably a drug debt”. He will be eligible for release on parole on March 14, 2019.
Man ordered off the road and given stern warning
A suspended driver caught behind the wheel has been stung with a fine and further disqualification. Joseph Domenic Battiato faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with breaching his suspension and speeding.
Mr Battiato told the court his partner – who had recently undergone a stomach operation – was initially driving, but he took over the reigns when it became apparent she was still too sore to drive. The court heard Mr Battiato was initially suspended on the spot for six months back in August after he was nabbed driving more than 45km/h over the speed limit, with the fresh offence violating his police-issued suspension. He was convicted, fined $150 for the speeding matter, $500 for breaching his suspension and was barred from driving for an additional 12 months. Magistrate Georgia Knight warned him not to flout his suspension again or risk two more years off the track. “So don’t even think about it,” she cautioned.
Man was unaware how long drugs stayed in his system
A man has been stripped of his licence for three months after pleading guilty to driving with drugs in his system. Joshua Leslie Peckham appeared before Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with driving with an illicit substance present in his blood. Mr Peckham insisted he was not under the influence, rather he was unaware how long it took for drugs to exit his system. “I just didn’t know it stayed in my body that long,” he said. A contrite Mr Peckham told the court he “desperately” needed his licence for work, but was willing to make it work. “Whatever comes of this I’ll be able to work around it,” he said. Magistrate Georgia Knight noted he was not being charged with the more severe ‘driving under the influence’ offence, rather he had drugs present in his blood. “It’s certainly a lesson to people that they have to be very careful what they smoke or inject before they drive,” she said. He was convicted and fined $250 by Magistrate Knight

Jordan Springs: Teen to face court after burn-out bust
At about 2.40pm on Saturday, December 17 police attended The Northern Road at Jordan Springs near the intersection at Greenwood Parkway. Police observed a vehicle performing burn-outs on the road that had sustained loss of traction at the rear of the vehicle and was producing large amounts of smoke. There were 20 persons encouraging the driver, a number of whom were filming with their mobile phones. A 16-year-old male was sitting on the rear tonneau cover with his legs dangling over the edge. Police directed the vehicle to stop and spoke to the driver who was a 17-year-old male from Cranebrook. His licence was suspended and he was charged with a number of offences including ‘negligent driving’. He is set to attend Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, January 10.
Emu Plains: Car stolen and later destroyed by fire
Police are appealing for information after a car was stolen from the River Road Reserve car park this week. On Tuesday, December 20 at about 12.30am, two men were at the car park in Emu Plains when they were approached by a group of three males. One male produced a 30cm knife and demanded property from the two men. They handed over a number of items including keys to their vehicle. The three males left driving the vehicle away from the scene. No one was hurt. The car was located at 2.43am in Willmot where it had been destroyed by fire. Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Penrith: Woman arrested after allegedly stealing from Myer On Monday, December 19 at about
2.40pm police observed a female run out of the Myer entrance at Penrith Westfield. She was hiding a number of items in her arms. A store employee yelled out for assistance and police who were in the vicinity for an unrelated matter stopped the 41-year-old woman from Cambridge Gardens. It is alleged she had a significant number of items on her person worth about $1,000. She was charged with ‘larceny’ and will appear in court next year.
Cambridge Gardens: Man who abused police to front court
A South Penrith man who abused police officers at a shopping centre in Cambridge Gardens has been charged. Police were talking with the 23-year-old last Saturday when he started to abuse the officers. He was warned for his offensive language and asked to supply his details. Checks were made on the details, which proved they were false. Police then searched the man and located an amount of white powder believed to be cocaine. The man was arrested following a short scuffle with police. He was charged with ‘possess prohibited drug’ and ‘resist officer in execution of duty’.
St Marys: Police hunt perfume thieves after daylight robbery
Police are appealing for information on two women who have stolen approximately $1,500 worth of perfumes. On Monday, December 12 at about 3.20pm, the women entered a pharmacy on the Great Western Highway in St Marys. It is alleged the women walked through the store for a while and then stole the perfume. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Key cases determined Despite the fact that most of the country is winding down after a busy 2016, courts across the country are going full steam ahead with a number of high profile public interest cases being decided upon in the last week. Firstly, the Supreme Court of NSW found that a Sydney factory worker by the name of Brendan King was not entitled to a share of a $40 million Powerball win won by members of a syndicate in his workplace, despite the fact that he had been playing the lottery with the group for a number of years. Mr King’s argument was that he had been a part of the syndicate for a very long time, and the only reason he had not contributed to this particular ticket purchase was because the syndicate organiser, Robert Adams, had not approached him to make a contribution. Mr Adams argued that there was strict protocols in place that meant that syndicate members had to pay in advance and hold a copy of the winning ticket in order to be included. NSW Supreme Court Justice John Sacker found that the winning syndicate was in fact distinct from previous syndicates, and that Mr Adams had bought the ticket in the winning Powerball draw only using funds he received from the winning syndicate members, with no contribution from Mr King, and

so Mr King’s action failed. Mr King stood to receive approximately $2.7 million had his action been successful. In another high profile case, the High Court has handed down a decision finding Flight Centre guilty of anti-competitive conduct. The action taken against Flight Centre centred around the allegations that the flight ticketing company had sought to induce Malaysia Airlines, Emirates and Singapore Airlines to stop offering international airfares lower than the prices offered by Flight Centre directly to consumers. A majority of the High Court bench held that Flight Centre was engaging in anti-competitive conduct in attempting to influence flight prices, the result of which would have been consumers paying more to get to their destinations despite the three airlines concerned seemingly being willing to offer cheaper flights. It has been reported that Flight Centre faces a fine of some $11 million as a result of the finding, and is a lesson to the public to shop around when looking for international flights. These two cases indicate how the law quite often interacts with the everyday lives of individual members of the community despite sometimes seeming beyond the reach of regular citizens.

Edens Cafe closes its doors for the final time after 10 years
Brightening Christmas for those who’ve “fallen through the net” EMILY NEWTON
hristmas is full of carefree quality time with family, but there are many others who don’t get a chance to escape their worries. Ross ‘Rossco’ Hutchison said the needs of the Penrith community are vastly growing as his non-profit organisation, The Ross Hutchison Foundation, attempts to help those in need. “We’re not a big charity, we’re just little guys that pick up those who fall through the net and they really are the ones who need it most,” he said. “We want to better inform people with what they can do to help their fellow man.” Several local charities and organisations including Ability Links, the Blue Mountains Lantern Club and Happy Harry’s Cafe have joined together to see how they can best help the region. With their combined effort, Paul Steward from Ability Links and Mr Hutchison have been able to find employment and opportunities for struggling local community members. “We can be the first point of call for people who want to get in and help the community,” Mr Steward said. “We also work with organisations to become more socially inclusive, because that’s what we’re striving for.”

t’s the end of an era for Kingswood restaurant Edens Cafe after the doors were closed for the final time last week. The restaurant has been at the premises across from Nepean Hospital’s Emergency Department for over 10 years. Owner Carol Bauuw said the cafe is a popular dining choice for staff and patients from Nepean Hospital. “Nepean Hospital staff have always supported us,” Ms Bauuw said. “We do coffees for doctors that are

Ross Hutchison, Paul Steward, Di Marris With the support of passionate local community members, dozens of presents will also be going out to families in need this Christmas. There is a growing pressure to continue providing, and The Ross Hutchison Foundation is calling for help for food, blankets and household equipment. “I could never have enough non-perishables. That is a constant demand every day,” Mr Hutchison said. “We can help one another. Hopefully we can be proactive instead of constantly having to play catch up.” To help Mr Hutchison’s Christmas giving, call 4721 2620 or visit www.abilitylinksnsw.org.au.

taff from Ray White Penrith and South Penrith have teamed up to tackle Mount Kosciuszko for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance. Helen Fitzpatrick and her team have joined forces to fundraise and help 16-year-old Zarni Tun – who was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy when he was one – take on the Krazy Kosci Klimb. “This 19km trek will be walked, crawled, rolled or climbed by participants aged between seven and 60 with varying abilities,” Zarni said. “With the funds raised by the Krazy Kosci Klimb, the Cerebral Palsy Alliance will be able to purchase specialised equipment and provide qualified exercise physiologists to support exercise and sporting programs for teenagers and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities.” Every Wednesday, Ms Fitzpatrick and her sister are selling raffle tickets for prize baskets at the Penrith Paceway Markets until their climb in February. “With the support of the markets every Wednesday... we raise on average about $500 a week,” Ms Fitzpatrick said. “One of the stall holders, Paul the Plant Man pays for our stall each week, so whatever we raise all goes straight to Cerebral Palsy.”
S
Ms Fitzpatrick said her team was inspired to do more to help after previously taking part in Steptember for Cerebral Palsy. She said they’re proud to be a part of Zarni’s exciting and challenging journey to climb Mount Kosciuszko alongside his family. “They’re so appreciative of what we’re doing for them and Cerebral Palsy. They’re so excited about it all, and overwhelmed I think by it,” she said. Team Zarni is currently the leading team for the Krazy Kosci Klimb with over $11,000 raised, and Ms Fitzpatrick is leading the individual scoreboard with over $8,500. “There’s 20 teams going with about 10 people in each team, and it was about what can we do to help,” Ms Fitzpatrick said. In Australia, every 15 hours a child is born with Cerebral Palsy, equating to one in every 500 children. “The more people that know about Cerebral Palsy Alliance, the greater their impact,” she said. To donate to Team Zarni and help them on their quest, visit krazykosciklimb2017. everydayhero.com/au/team-zarni. If your business wants to help fundraise for the Krazy Kosci Klimb, call or text David on 0414 306 040. Do you have a community story to share? Call us today on 4722 2998.

Power to the people: Cornish wants to move with the times
Councillor Marcus Cornish wants power points installed in local parks JADE ALIPRANDI
ndependent Penrith Councillor Marcus Cornish is hoping to get power points installed at local parks to encourage more people outdoors. Cr Cornish addressed Penrith Councillors at Monday night’s Council meeting asking for a memo to be brought back to Council with the finer details. The details include where they will be placed, whether they will be all together or spread apart, the voltage, and what parks the idea is suitable for. Cr Cornish said it’s important to get

people outdoors, but they need to have access to power. “I know myself that I keep running out of battery and have nowhere to charge my phone when I’m out,” he said. “If we want to encourage locals to use the parks we should be supplying banks of power points so people can actually charge their phones.” He added the biggest challenge in getting people outside is technology. “Locals should be encouraged to use these parks. Rather than competing with technology, we should be accommodating it,” Cr Cornish said. Your thoughts? Tweet @wwpenrith.

oy to the world! Or at least, that is what the Christmas Carol says. But so often, joy can be hard to find. While things like work, family, relationships, holidays, or even sport and relaxation, might bring times of happiness and contentment, their joy is not long lasting because as the disappointments and struggles of life pile up, so often, all we are left with is memories of better times.
J
Even Christmas, a time where many should experience joy can be a time of loneliness and sadness, which is magnified as we see and experience the state of the world around us. So what is joy? And where can you find it? On the first Christmas morning, the Bible tells us how an angel spoke to a startled group of shepherds; “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great

CHURCH SERVICES
St Clair Uniting Church Cnr Bennett Rd & Autumnleaf Pde St Clair joy that will be for all people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been to you; he is Christ the Lord.” Why is this announcement “good news of great joy?” Here, the Bible is making an extraordinary claim, yet, a claim matched by our life experience. Because our lives are out of step with the God who made us, loves and knows us, our experience of life is fractured
and broken. The Bible’s claim is that as we put our trust in the Saviour who is born at Christmas, we can experience the joy of knowing that our relationship with God has been put right. And as the angel says, this takes away fear and brings real joy, real peace and confident hope. Where do you find joy? By looking to Jesus! And may you have a joyful, happy Christmas.

ENTERTAINMENT PENRITH’S BIGGEST AND BEST LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
Hi-5’s special local connection
T ERIN MAMO
he new faces of popular kids entertainment group Hi-5 have been announced and two of them hail from the Blue Mountains. Courtney Clarke, 18, and Siobhan Clifford, 18, are part of the five new cast members that were recently chosen from more than 450 individuals who auditioned to be part of the group. Siobhan, also known as ‘Shay’, said she is really excited to be joining the Hi-5 cast and is particularly looking forward to
coming home in January to perform in the Mountains. “We are performing at the Fairmont in January, so we are really excited to be so close to home,” Shay said. “It’s going to be such a fun and lively show, and it will be really special having all of our friends and family there!” At 18, Shay has just completed her HSC at Winmalee High School. Courtney, who grew up in Lithgow, graduated high school last year and has just finished a gap year in Cambodia where she taught English at a local primary school. Interestingly, the pair already knew each other before the Hi-5 process began, and have the same vocal coach in Leura.
Hi-5 is now preparing for their first performance together during the children’s segment of Channel Nine’s ‘Carols by Candlelight’ on Christmas Eve. After the Carols they will then start their ‘Hi-5 Summer Holiday Show’, which will bring them to Fairmont Resort. Set to be a memorable, fun-filled afternoon, Hi-5 will perform their favourite songs like, ‘It’s a Party’, ‘Underwater Discovery’ and ‘L.O.V.E’. Fairmont Resort Blue Mountains General Manager, Scott O’Neile, said the Hi-5 show offers the perfect solution to organising a family-friendly weekend in the Blue Mountains. “The Fairmont is only 90 minutes from Sydney and with Hi-5 coming to perform,
it offers the perfect solution to entertaining the kids during the school holiday period,” he said. Now based in Sydney for their careers, both Courtney and Shay are looking forward to coming home. “I love driving home to the Mountains,” Courtney said. “Watching the landscape change from the city to the mountains is something I look forward to. It’s such a beautiful place, both the landscape and the people really make it special.” Hi-5 will perform at Fairmont Resort on Sunday, January 15. Tickets are $29, or $39 for a VIP ticket, which includes a meet and greet and preferred seating. To book, visit www.fairmontresort.com.au.

T
his summer there’s a new festival in town, but this one’s for the kids. miniFEST is a three hour entertainment extravaganza featuring theatre shows, a short film festival and a music lounge complete with snacks. Kicking off each day will be ‘Les Moutons – The Sheep!’, a wordless live installation that will give audiences a surreal and hilarious look into the life of sheep. Next up is ‘A Flock of Flyers’ which features a group of keen flyers with one rather large problem – they don’t have a plane! miniFEST will also offer kids the
chance to check out Little Big Shots, Australia’s international film festival for kids, plus miniMUSIC Central led by some of the brightest stars from Triple J Unearthed. The miniFEST program will be held over four days with the same program running each day. miniFEST will be at The Joan on Tuesday, January 24, Friday, January 27 and Saturday, January 28 from 11am to 2pm and Wednesday, January 25 from 5pm to 8pm. A MAXI-PASS (includes all four activities each day) is $40 for adults, $35 for children or $120 for a family pass (four people including at least one adult). miniFEST is suitable for kids aged three to 10 years. hristine McVie is the voice behind some of Fleetwood Mac’s greatest hits. While her fellow band mate Stevie Nicks may have stolen some of the limelight, Christine more than matched her talent with low smoky vocals that featured on tracks like ‘Little Lies’ and ‘Say You Love Me’. This January local audiences will experience the magic of McVie through a tribute performance from Australian stage sensation Catherine Alcorn. ‘Go Your Own Way – The Christine McVie Story’ will take a look inside the life of one of music’s most iconic singers. Starting out as a school teacher, Christine discovered her love for singing the blues and ended up becoming part of rock royalty after joining Fleetwood Mac in 1970. The show will blend together Fleet-
wood Mac hits with the story of this intriguing figure who had a strained relationship with fame. This is set to be a fun night of 70s and 80s nostalgia, and the perfect kick off to The Joan’s 2017 season. ‘Go Your Own Way – The Christine McVie Story’ will be on at The Joan on Friday, January 20 at 7.30pm. Tickets are $60-$65. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.thejoan. com.au or call 4723 7600.

Well, it’s that time of year again when I hand out my famous Chatter on the Box Awards for 2016. These awards dictate what I think have been the hits, misses and surprises of television in 2016…
Ê
Nathan
Taylor TV NEWS
Channel of the Year: Channel Ten. After winning Most Improved Channel last year, Channel Ten went one better in 2016 to claim the top prize. They kicked off the year with another superb season of ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here’ before punching out old favourites like the award-winning ‘MasterChef Australia’ and ‘Offspring’. I must admit I thoroughly enjoyed what Ten did with ‘Australian Survivor’, and ‘Shark Tank’ enjoyed a great follow-up season. Yes, they had the odd stinker like ‘The Wrong Girl’ while ‘The Bachelor’ and ‘The Bachelorette’ are always cringe worthy, but all in all it was a top year for Ten.
Ê
Best Aussie Reality Show: ‘Australian Survivor’. After disastrous attempts by Seven and Nine in the past, Channel Ten really nailed ‘Australian Survivor’ this year. The production values were on par with the US version, the drama between the castaways was riveting, and the challenges were epic. With host Jonathan LaPaglia at the helm, no reality show came close in my opinion. I can’t wait to see what season two has in store.
Ê
Best Dating Show: ‘First Dates’. Forget corny dating shows like ‘The Bachelor’ and ‘Married at First Sight’, Channel Seven’s ‘First Dates’ was by far the best way to find love. This simplistic format wasn’t just a winner for me in 2016 but Australia absolutely loved it, with ratings through the roof. The show was so

Trapdoor Award: Waleed Aly. I know he’s popular with some and I know he won the Gold Logie this year, but I think ‘The Project’ host is getting slightly big for his boots with his editorials on just about everything of late. Seeing Dick Smith take him down live on air recently was one of the best pieces of television all year.
Ê
Best Aussie Drama: ‘Home and Away’. An oldie but a goodie, the Channel Seven soap had some great moments in 2016 and last Monday’s finale was one of the best in years. If you don’t take my word for it, ‘Home and Away’ won yet another Most Popular Drama award at this year’s Logie Awards.
Ê
Worst Shows of 2016: ‘Australia’s Got Talent’, ‘The Wrong Girl’, ‘You’re Back In The Room’, ‘Kiss Bang Love’, ‘Brock’, ‘Hide & Seek’, ‘The Farmer Wants A Wife’, ‘The Secret Daughter’, ‘The NRL Rookie’ and ‘The Briefcase’.
Ê
Best Netflix Original Show: ‘Stranger Things’. Recently nominated for a few Golden Globe and SAG awards, ‘Stranger Things’ was the most enthralling eight episode series I have ever seen. After the finale ended on a knife edge, I’m very much looking forward to seeing it return in 2017. For nostalgia purposes, ‘Fuller House’ came a close second.
NEW YEAR’S EVE
Ê
Most Anticipated New Show: ‘Prison Break’. I can’t wait to see this beauty finally return after almost 10 years. All the classic characters are back including brothers Michael and Lincoln, and of course the super creepy ‘T-Bag’. Catch it on Channel Ten mid next year.

your horoscopes
The New Moon suggests opportunities are brewing on the professional horizon. But it will take a while for changes to manifest. On New Year’s Eve, with three planets in your reputation zone you’ll be on show. Perhaps you’ll deliver a speech or wear something that makes you stand out from the crowd. 2017 is a terrific year to tap into your entrepreneurial side and turn an abstract, innovative idea into a practical, productive venture.
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
Prepare for some disruptive surprises on Monday or Tuesday! Things won’t run smoothly, so hold onto your seat and just enjoy the rollicking holiday ride. The New Moon activates your adventure zone. So get off your beautiful bovine behind and start planning an exciting escape for some time soon. In 2017, May and June are fabulous months for love, study and self-confidence.
GEMINI
MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
Joanne Madeline Moore Weekly posts at www.bohoastro.com twitter @JoMadelineMoore Copyright Joanne Madeline Moore 2016
A fresh financial or sexual start is likely in the near future, as Thursday’s New Moon signals a smart savings or investment plan; a hot new love interest, or the renaissance of a stale relationship. Things certainly won’t be boring on Saturday, when the stars fire up the New Year party mix! 2017 will be slow to start though, as Mercury is retrograde. But it is the perfect time to review the past year, and get ready to reboot your life from January 8.
CANCER
JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
With Mercury reversing through your relationship zone, you need to be particularly compassionate and patient with people this week. Many Crabs will host a New Year’s Eve party, or be a guest at the celebrations of a relative. Either way, the focus is firmly on family. In 2017 your wildest wishes really can take flight. January and May are the best months to tap into your inner muse.
OF THE WEEK
LEO
JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
The planets boost your Cat charisma, confidence, creativity and impetuosity. You’re also in the mood to overdo just about everything – including talking, texting, socialising and spending. On New Year’s Eve, shake out your dancing shoes, shimmy into your favourite party gear, and turn the music up – loud! In 2017, Jupiter encourages you to contribute your substantial Leo talents to a worthy cause within your local community.
VIRGO
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
If someone approaches you with a financial deal that looks too good to be true, start running away fast Virgo! If you hang around, then you might be talked into making a costly mistake. The stars favour having a quiet New Year’s Eve, with a few loved ones. Expect a stop/start New Year period as prosperous Jupiter jumps through your money zone, and Mercury reverses through your luck zone.
LIBRA
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
Avoid jumping to hasty, half-baked conclusions on Monday. Instead, think things through before you make a major move. You’re in the mood to celebrate on Saturday, when the Moon and Venus visit your entertainment zone. Make the most of the first nine months of 2017, when lucky Jupiter continues moving through your sign. An optimistic and proactive approach will lead to success, travel and plenty of positive feedback.
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
Are you used to doing the same-old thing on Boxing Day? Your usual routine is likely to fly out the window as people force you to let go of previous patterns and move on. Home is where the heart is on Saturday night. The Moon’s moving through your domestic zone so some Scorpios will host a New Year’s Eve party, while others enjoy a quiet night at home with family and close friends.
Our My Local Review clients
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
Jupiter and Uranus are set to disrupt the rhythm of your post-Christmas mood. Relations with a child, teenager, friend or lover are also likely to be topsy-turvy. Single Sadges – love is waiting in your neighbourhood, so make sure you attend a local party on New Year’s Eve. 2017 is the year to extend your peer group to include a successful new crowd. If you rub shoulders with influential people, then lucky opportunities will manifest.
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
There could be a fraction too much friction at chez Capricorn, as the planets stir up problems in your domestic zone. A double dose of diplomacy will get you through the week without too many dramas! With the New Moon, Pluto and retrograde Mercury in your sign, personal progress is slow. But – if you are patient – then you’ll eventually get where you want to go.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Uranus and Jupiter rev up your restless side. You’ll feel like discarding people, places, behaviours or beliefs that have outlived their purpose. But be careful you don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater! Pleasure-planet Venus visits your sign, until January 3. So your mantra for the New Year period is from Henry Miller “Do anything, but let it produce joy.” The next nine months is the best time to take an overseas trip.
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
What a wonderful week to ring in 2017! Friday’s fabulous Sun/Neptune hook-up highlights your compassion, creativity, sensitivity and spirituality. You may get a bit teary on New Year’s Eve, as you look back over the highs and lows of the year. Then mighty Mars links up with your power planet Neptune on Sunday. Your motto is from Marlene Dietrich: “Courage and grace are a formidable mixture.”

How to make sure you achieve your goals in 2017 Lose weight? Get a better job? Whatever your goals might be in 2017, there’s numerous steps to take to make sure you’re not a failure come the middle of the year....

In theory New Year’s Resolutions are a great idea, however come June only 40 per cent of people are still on track with those goals they set in January and everyone else is left disappointed. But all New Year’s Resolutions don’t have to end this way if we take some simple steps before setting our goals. Acknowledge where you currently stand Whether this be in regards to fitness, weight or work circumstances, it’s good to set ourself goals based on our current position. If you currently struggle to reach 10,000 steps a day; running a marathon is a bit of a stretch, start slow and build up. SMART goals; Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timed It is important that our goals are not just focused on performance or appearance and are specific to what you actually want to achieve. Rather than setting a goal of running more, set a goal of running

Report shows we’re not being careful enough in the water Staying safe on the water has never been more important, but research shows that we’re taking too many risks...

With the Christmas holidays coming up, and the beautiful Nepean River on our doorstep, it’s a good time to be talking about safety on the water, as well as in the water. Royal Lifesaving Australia have just released a 10 year analysis on drowning deaths that occurred in Australian waterways whilst participating in boating and watercraft activity over the past 10 years – and the news is not good. The report showed that 473 people drowned whilst boating, with 92 per cent of these deaths being men. Boating remains the second leading activity prior to drowning behind swimming and recreating, with 16 per cent of drowning deaths occurring annually whilst boating or on the river. NSW had the highest rate of drowning deaths with 149 (31 per cent) in the 10 years studied. In many of these deaths, high risk behaviour is to blame. This study found that only eight per cent of people were wearing a lifejacket at the time of death, 31 per cent had consumed drugs, of which 31 per cent were illegal drugs, and

It’s important to wear a lifejacket, avoid alcohol and drugs, be prepared and check conditions, and never go alone”. Another key recommendation from the report is to learn lifesaving skills, as well as first aid and CPR, so you are able to respond in an emergency. At home, at the beach or on the river, please be vigilant and Stay Safer this Christmas and New Year. I wish you and your family a wonderful festive season! See you next year.
Last minute tips to finish your shopping this Christmas With only a couple of days left to finish your Christmas shopping this year, we’ve got you covered with some last minute advice...
Alyce Madden
26 per cent of people had alcohol in their system, with 59 per cent above the legal driving limit. The consequences of taking drugs and alcohol include impaired judgment and coordination, slow reaction times and increased risk taking behaviour. Royal Life Saving Society – Australia CEO, Justin Scarr said: “With boating and watercraft activity a popular pastime for Australians, we urge people to take the appropriate measures to have an enjoyable and safe time on the water.
For those who celebrate Christmas this is crunch week, the hours are steadily counting down to the big day, cutting into your precious gift shopping time that’s still left for you to finish (or begin, like me!). Don’t panic! To get everything purchased in time you just need to be strategic about how you shop and I have a few simple tips to help! For an Aussie fashion-forward Christmas, think summertime with a necessary glass of champagne and the weekend spent with family around a BBQ, great gifts would include any fun under the sun items! Get into Westfield Penrith and grab a fresh pair of sunnies for your brother. At General Pants the Insight Kennedy Sunglasses in shiny dark tort are a rock and roll favourite with a vintage tortoiseshell frame that prevent sun glare and have amazing high UV protection! For Mum head into Dotti and get her a classic hat to wear with all her sundresses! I love the Short Brim Panama Hat in Natural Tan, the neutral shade with a
delicate leather trim gives you a lot of outfit options to work with. If you’re thinking about braving the last minute stampede plan on heading into the shops earlier in the day! That way you can guarantee a parking spot and the extra long checkout lines should be a lot calmer. Check online for store opening and closing times to be extra prepared as most stores are open a lot earlier and close later during the holidays! The one advantage of waiting later to do your shopping is the bargains you can find! Closer up to Christmas retailers start competing for your business so it’s a perfect time to quickly compare who has that latest fragrance in store cheaper! The only issue with purposely waiting if you’re looking for a deal is if you already have your eye on something like that pair of shoes, they might have come down an extra 20 per cent on December 24 but will they still have your size and preferred colour? Definitely shop smart! If all else fails and you can’t find the perfect present for a loved one consider getting a gift card. It’s maybe not the most personal gift but everyone loves choice and the flexibility of being able to buy what he or she wants! Thank you for your support of this column in 2016. Have a Merry Christmas and I’ll see you next year!

Crash course in cricket for youngsters p.46 NATHAN TAYLOR
he Western Sydney Wanderers have boosted their player stocks by signing experienced goalkeeper Vedran Janjetovic to an 18-month contract. The 29-year-old western Sydney native made the switch following five seasons at Sydney FC. A fierce competitor and excellent shotstopper, Janjetovic joined the team for training on Tuesday before his transfer officially goes through on January 4. Speaking for the first time as a Wanderer, Janjetovic said he felt at home. “I’ve heard a lot about the club and what a good place it is to be and I’m happy to be home,” he said. “I haven’t trained in a little while so I’ve got to get up to speed. There are a lot of challenges ahead but I’m looking forward to every single one of them.” Meanwhile, the Wanderers have let yet another victory slip through their fingers despite leading Wellington 2-0 with less than half an hour remaining. Goals in each half to Brendon Santalab and Mitch Nichols gave the Wanderers the early advantage before two quick-fire strikes to Gui Finkler and Roy Krishna rescued a point for Wellington. Wanderers coach Tony Popovic was disappointed with the outcome. “In the end we go home frustrated having only taken a point,” he said. “We were comfortable at a stage there but we let Wellington back into the game. “Before the game a point is good away from home but after you lead 2-0 it’s disappointing.” Last Saturday’s 2-all draw with the Phoenix was the Wanderers’ sixth of the season. Victories over the next few weeks will be vital for Western Sydney, if they want to return to the post-season. Tonight the Wanderers will take on the Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium before a New Year’s Day blockbuster against Perth at ANZ Stadium. On January 6, the Wanderers take on Tim Cahill and Melbourne City before a showdown against Sydney FC.

Surprise honour for softball devotee Story continued from » p. 48 Also inducted that night was former Australian softball representative Troy Baverstock. Both Rainer and Baverstock were presented their prestigious honours by Penrith City Softball Association legend and fellow Hall of Fame inductee Gary Johnston. Rainer believes he was bestowed the honour due to the fact he’s been heavily involved with softball as a player and coach for decades. “Apparently I’m still the longest serving Open Men’s player to represent NSW [from 1988 to 2002],” he said. “I’ve also coached quite a few of Penrith City’s U15 and U17 State Championship-winning sides of late.” Rainer joined the Penrith City Softball Association as a player in 1995 before going on to become a successful coach on many levels. These days Rainer still enjoys playing recreational softball with his 16-year-old son, and hopes to one day coach at State level. “My son and I play in a recreational team together, which is competitive but a bit of a hit and giggle as well,” he said. “I just love softball, and hopefully one day I can coach a NSW side.” Fellow Penrith City Softball Association member Taylah Tsitsikronis was named Female Athlete of the Year.

Chance for local youngsters to emulate their heroes this summer thanks to Camp Thunder NATHAN TAYLOR
amp Thunder, Sydney Thunder’s holiday camp program, returns to Penrith’s Howell Oval on January 16 and 17. The two-day camp is suitable for both boys and girls, and is recommended for children between eight and 10 years of age who are looking to emulate their Sydney Thunder heroes. Sydney Thunder quick and Penrith Cricket Club member Pat Cummins believes the Sydney Thunder holiday camps will be a highlight for many this school holidays. “Camp Thunder is a fantastic way for kids to enjoy themselves during the holidays,” he said. “Big Bash cricket is great family entertainment and hopefully we see more boys and girls playing cricket as a result. “The camps are all about having fun and who knows, we may even find the next Shane Watson or Alex Blackwell.” Camp Thunder will be run by Sydney Thunder’s experienced and qualified coaches, and will include a series of different cricket activities. At $99 per child, Champ Thunder includes a shirt, Sydney Thunder drink bottle and wristband.

Camp Thunder will once again take over Howell Oval this January For more information or to book, visit sydneythunder.com.au/camp-thunder. Meanwhile, Sydney Thunder’s Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) team put on an exciting show for local cricket fans last Saturday at Howell Oval. For the second straight year, the Thunder took over the local cricket ground
when they went up against the Adelaide Strikers. Unfortunately for local cricket fans Friday’s game was cancelled due to wet weather, while Saturday’s game went off without a hitch. Adelaide defeated the Thunder by six wickets, with thousands in attendance.

The Jordan Springs Netball Club committee invites anyone (no matter what age) with an interest in netball, to come along to their Registration Day on January 21, 2017 from 10am4pm at the Jordan Springs Shopping Complex. For more information, email jsnetball@gmail.com. CRICKET: After defeating Gordon last week, Penrith have been brought back down to earth at the hands of Bankstown in Round 8 of the NSW Premier Cricket competition. Playing in a One Day match at Jensen Park, Penrith hit the crease first scoring just 130 runs. When Bankstown hit the crease later that day, they reached Penrith’s target in just 23 overs and with seven wickets in hand. Penrith will now enjoy a few weeks off before resuming on January 7 against Campbelltown-Camden. BASEBALL: Penrith’s first grade side have enjoyed excellent results against Ryde during Round 14 of the NSW State Baseball League. In the mid-week game last Wednesday night, Penrith overcame Ryde 10-6, while last Sunday afternoon Penrith were in top form winning 12-7.
Penrith will now enjoy a month off before returning on January 18 to face Macarthur. NETBALL: Giants Netball has announced Kimberlee Green as the club’s inaugural captain ahead of the 2017 Suncorp Super Netball season. A stalwart of the game, Green is considered the natural choice as the club’s first captain having played at netball’s top level since 2004. The Giants will begin their Suncorp Super Netball campaign at home when they host cross-town rivals the NSW Swifts at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre on February 18. W-LEAGUE: The Western Sydney Wanderers have pulled off one of the W-League’s greatest upsets with a 2-1 win over reigning champions Melbourne City at Popondetta Park last Sunday. The Wanderers fought back after Marianna Tabain’s opener for City, with a Kendall Fletcher double securing an unfancied victory for Western Sydney. The Wanderers will look to string together back-to-back wins when they face Newcastle on Boxing Day. Y-LEAGUE: The Wanderers have surrendered top spot in the National Youth League after going down 2-0 to the Newcastle Jets last Sunday night. The Wanderers will look to bounce back after Christmas against Sydney FC on January 2.

lenmore Park softball coach Peter Rainer said he was lost for words when he was surprisingly inducted into the Softball NSW Hall of Fame. Making the prestigious honour at the 2017 State Teams Dinner even more remarkable was the fact the 48-year-old became just the third male to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. “It was definitely a surprise,” Rainer said. “I was only supposed to be there to present the U17 boys with their caps, and then they announced the Hall of Fame. “I was lost for words when I had to say something on stage.” Over 300 people attended the lavish function at Rooty Hill RSL earlier this month, to celebrate the successes of the players and officials involved with Softball NSW. Fortunately for Rainer he was lucky enough to have his family right beside him to enjoy the momentous occasion. “Softball NSW invited my wife and son to the dinner as well. They were unaware of it, so it was a big surprise for them too,” Rainer said. Story continues on » p. 46
