Unwanted Christmas gift Fire destroys Henry Street building, community organisations impacted EMILY FESZCZUK

L

ocal community organisations have been dealt a crushing blow in the lead up to Christmas after a commercial and retail building in the Penrith CBD went up in flames this week.

More than 80 firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) spent hours extinguishing a large blaze at the Community Connection building, located at 114-116 Henry Street, Penrith.

Around 1.20am on Monday, December 13, emergency services were called and found the two-storey building well alight with flames leaping 15 metres into the air.

FRNSW said the building sustained significant structural damage, with firefighters fearing part of the building, which is owned by Penrith City Council, might collapse.

Henry Street was closed from Woodriff Street to Station Street, with the site being secured and assessed by engineers.

The Weekender understands the fire may have started from an extraction fan, which was being used in one of the offices impacted by the recent heavy rainfall.

Penrith City Council General Manager, Warwick Winn, said he was saddened to learn about the fire.

“This property houses a number of community services that deliver a variety of support services to our residents,” he said.

“To minimise the impact to these businesses, Council is working to relocate them to other premises across the city.”

Westcare Community Services Director, Andrew Paech, told the Weekender they are working to replace supplies for their Christmas appeals.

“We had our admin office and emergency relief service there, so we lost 60 Christmas hampers, which were ready to go out that day, plus five commercial fridge and freezers full of food,” he said “We are pushing on and trying to replace it all but I feel for the other grassroots community organisations that also have to respond to such a challenge.”

NADO Disability Services CEO, Denise Heath, said it was heartbreaking to lose the space for community services.

“We had six staff working from there providing support coordination, who will work from other sites or home, but we are just glad no one was injured or worse,” she said.

“The building has been a tremendous place for allowing services to connect and collaborate, so it has been quite a shock with the damage.”

Recently opened country clothing store Ringers Western, which occupies the bottom floor, is also closed as a result.

Stadium doubts still remain A

s I write this column from my home office, I only have to glance up to see a little wooden frame containing the words: “My body might be here, but my heart’s at Penrith Park.”

On the surface, last week’s announcement that Penrith Stadium would be knocked down and re-built into a stateof-the-art venue is great news.

Any investment in Penrith on this scale is always a positive, and it continues to put our city in a position of strength.

But I admit, I am something of a dissenting voice on this issue.

Part of it, perhaps a big part of it, I admit is blind nostalgia.

Penrith Park, and its many names since its inception, has been a home away from home for me for more than 30 years.

When the bulldozers come in, it’ll legitimately feel like a part of me is being taken away, and I’m sure many long-time Panthers fans will feel the same way.

For all of its age-related flaws, there is so much to love.

From mates on ‘beer hill’ to families at the opposite end, veteran fans in the Western Grandstand and ‘The Den’ in the East, the people of Penrith have given that ground its soul.

There is something very unassuming about suburban football, and the old grounds play such an important role in that sense of community.

There is a sadness that lurks around all of this, that I can’t quite move on from at present.

But if that’s the heart talking, the brain wants its say too.

To be honest I’m not quite buying the justification side of the new stadium yet, either.

But regardless, this project will happen.

And I’m not suggesting we should chain ourselves to the fences of the old stadium or even launch a campaign to stop the major investment in our city.

The end result will be an incredible new state-of-the-art venue where new memories will be made, and while it’ll take some time, perhaps the new stadium will develop its own Panther soul too.

The commitment also ensures the Panthers’ long-term future in the NRL and keeps games at Penrith. Should a less-footy focused Board enter the fray at Panthers in the future, there will be no risk of giving in to the temptation of moving games elsewhere.

We must now move on to getting it right and ensuring the stadium that’s delivered is an all-round winner.

Fans must be consulted, and I mean seriously consulted – not some sort of token gesture.

The Western Grandstand must not follow the line of CommBank Stadium and be reserved for corporates only – that never should have happened at Parramatta and it shouldn’t happen here.

And the stadium needs to find a way to be uniquely Penrith, not just a stadium that happens to be in Penrith.

This stadium commitment is the latest in a long list of investments into Penrith by this State Government, headlined by the Nepean Hospital redevelopment and significant road improvements across the city.

Nobody could ever say Penrith is ignored by this Government.

I just hope and pray it takes care of a place where many of our hearts always are. Proceed with caution.

In the end, some $300 million will be spent to increase the capacity by around 4,000 to 5,000 people. The Government is saying the final capacity will sit somewhere between 25,000 and 30,000 but I can almost give you a gold plated guarantee it’ll sit at the lower end of that estimate.

No other sport has committed to play at the new venue when it opens in 2025, so at present the only tenant is the Panthers and their 11 home games a year.

The State Government says it expects concerts and major events to take place at the stadium, and that may well emerge as the case. But the truth is it’s nothing but a pipe dream at present, and with the new Sydney Football Stadium, Accor Stadium and CommBank Stadium all concertready, you do have to wonder how many major acts will land on Penrith as a tour stop.

And of course we can’t forget about the politics in all of this.

Governments believe that bulldozers on the ground and cranes in the sky show voters that progress is being made, and work on the new venue will be well underway by the time the next State Election rolls around in 2023.

I’ve never believed, though, that the stadium is the vote winner the government believes it is. Non-footy fans will struggle to understand the spend and the overall purpose while Panthers fans have long been divided on the idea of a totally new stadium.

Where I sit week in, week out, there’s very much a split vote on whether Panthers members want this to happen at all, and a frustration that they were never asked.

he ground has officially been broken as construction starts on the refurbishment of the historic Police Cottage at Emu Plains.

The project will see $1 million from Penrith City Council and a further $1.5 million contributed by the NSW Government to transform the 113-year-old cottage into a new dining destination.

Penrith City Council spokesperson Karen McKeown said the, soon-to-benamed, venue is a major step forward in the revitalisation of the Nepean River precinct.

“The Police Cottage will be brought back to life through a refurbishment into a café and restaurant that will blend heritage, nature and modern convenience with outdoor seating and magnificent views of our beautiful Nepean River,” Ms McKeown said.

“Through this project we will contribute over a $1 million in total value to our local economy, support 60 jobs in construction and it is expected to employ 40 to 45 hospitality workers.”

The construction partner, AMA Projects, will carefully restore the façade, conduct service upgrades, internal enhancements and deliver the extension of an outside deck to the building that was built in 1908.

Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres said the Cottage, which had fallen into a state of disrepair in recent years, will add to the list of tourist attractions Penrith offers, while preserving a piece of history for future generations.

“The restored Police Cottage will be an ideal location and drawcard for family, friends and visitors to eat, meet and relax in a prime riverfront location on the Great River Walk,” Mr Ayres said.

“It is so important that heritage buildings continue to be utilised. They need to be cared for to give people wonderful experiences, so I can’t wait to see what is done with this part of our local history.”

Australian first: Head to Health arrives in Penrith EMILY FESZCZUK

P

enrith is now home to the first Head to Health Centre in the country, which promises to change the way locals access mental health services.

The new mental health service, located at 111 Henry Street, welcomes people in for support, seven days a week.

Federal Member for Lindsay, Melissa McIntosh, and Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, David Coleman, officially opened the centre, which is part of a $14 million investment from the Federal Government, on Monday morning.

Ms McIntosh commended the work of the Nepean Blue Mountains Primary Health Network and Neami National, which will operate the centre.

“This centre was one of my election commitments... I didn’t really realise just how important it would be for the community, especially with COVID,” she said.

“I am so proud that the first one in the country is right here in Penrith. We deserve it, we need it and it is a testament to the outstanding work of everyone here.”

The Penrith Head to Health Centre officially opened on Monday.

Mr Coleman said the centre is one of eight being trialled nationally over the next five years, with one located in each state and territory.

“Head to Health centres are designed to provide a welcoming, low stigma, no wrong door entry point for adults to access mental health services and supports, without needing a prior appointment or paying a fee,” he said.

“This won’t be around for just a couple of years but rather decades and is the start of a really big change to the mental health landscape in Australia.”

The centre, which is staffed by multidisciplinary teams, is open from 1pm to 9.30pm every day, except Tuesdays when it is open from 1pm to 5pm.

“I encourage the community to visit the centre to see the support they can offer you, either now or in the future,” Neami National CEO, Tom Dalton said.

“Many of the staff employed at the centre have a lived experience of mental health issues themselves and are passionate about helping people find the right care for their individual needs.”

New Council for Xmas Community should know who will be representing them on Council soon ALENA HIGGINS

esidents will have to wait until later this month to find out the full results of the Penrith City Council elections.

As reported last week, only nine of Council’s 15 seats have been determined, with the remaining spots to be decided after preferences and postal votes are allocated.

Following two delays due to COVID19, voters finally headed to the polls on December 4 to elect the new Council.

Local Government elections in NSW were originally scheduled for September 2020 and were postponed to September 2021.

Returning Officer Peter Herrmann confirmed final spots were still unknown and would be determined by preferences after final results were input today.

“All polling place ballot papers have now been re-checked and postals to date have been counted, minus a few held back to preserve anonymity of the vote for next week’s receipts,” he said last Friday.

“We are processing declaration votes and expect those to be completed and counted

“We will then only need to wait for the mail on Friday, December 17 to do a final postal count for all wards.

“I expect that the scanning will then be completed and checked on Saturday morning, then the quota is struck and preferences are distributed.

“Full results are expected to be available Monday, December 20.”

In North Ward, Labor’s John Thain and Liberal Ross Fowler have already exceeded the quota needed to be elected, while the

Liberal’s Tricia Hitchen and Labor’s Todd Carney and Robin Cook have all clinched seats in East Ward.

In South Ward, only one space remains, with Mark Davies and Mark Rusev securing two seats for the Liberals, while Labor’s Karen McKeown and Independent Sue Day have also claimed victory.

Meanwhile, Council and the Australian Election Company (AEC) have been criticised for not providing online voting.

Council engaged AEC, which it has used since the 2012 elections, to undertake the

2020 elections rather than the NSW Election Commission (NSWEC), with AEC’s cost estimates coming in at $858,266 excluding GST, about $265,000 less than NSWEC. Mr Herrmann said NSW legislation specifically excludes anyone except the NSW Electoral Commissioner from conducting online voting for council elections.

“AEC has the facility to carry out secure online voting but is excluded by this legislation,” he said.

wo local public schools will benefit from heating, cooling and fresh air ventilation as part of the NSW Government’s Cooler Classrooms Program.

St Clair Public School and St Clair High School have been approved as part of the latest 37 schools in the five-year $500 million initiative.

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies said the dedicated program prioritises schools in the hottest parts of the state to have air-conditioning installed.

“This program is already being rolled out at more than 900 schools and I am so pleased that Mulgoa is continuing to

benefit from it,” she said.

“St Clair High School and St Clair Public School will look forward to these installations next year.”

The systems installed incorporate ‘smart systems’ technology that offer heating, cooling, and the provision of outside fresh air.

The units will automatically shut-down after hours and will be powered by solar technology and battery storage to off-set energy usage at more than 300 schools.

Minister for Education, Sarah Mitchell said the program is ahead of schedule for the existing 922 schools receiving the system and she was thrilled to add more schools to the program.

“We will continue to invest in our children’s learning facilities,” she said.

Albo backs firefighter Opposition Leader asks local Trevor Ross to nominate for seat of Lindsay EMILY FESZCZUK

hings are heating up ahead of next year’s Federal Election with Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese announcing a potential candidate to represent Labor in the hotly contested seat of Lindsay.

Firefighter Trevor Ross has been asked to nominate himself to take on Liberal MP Melissa McIntosh in the marginal seat.

Mr Albanese held a press conference at the Lendlease Skilling and Employment Centre in St Marys last week where he expressed his support for Mr Ross.

“We need a Government that is about delivery, not just about announcements, and today’s announcement will result in the delivery of Trevor Ross as the Labor candidate for Lindsay,” Mr Albanese said.

“The people of Lindsay need someone like Trevor who has experience, who has worked as a firefighter, who has stood up for the local community here in western Sydney, who is passionate about jobs and apprenticeships and the skills and making more opportunity for the genera-

tions of young people coming through here.”

A firefighter for 36 years, Mr Albanese said Mr Ross is a proud union member and has been active in the Labor Party for a considerable period of time.

Mr Ross said his strong sense of community has led him to nominate for the role.

“I’m a working-class firefighter from western Sydney who does hold a hose. I raised a family here and I want everyone to have the same opportunities I had,” he said.

“Only an Albanese Labor Government can deliver for our community the way we deserve and it will be an honour to serve in the Government as the Member for Lindsay.”

Taking a swipe at Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Mr Albanese said Mr Ross is “someone who has never gone missing”.

“He [Mr Ross] is someone who will stand up for this local community and will be an outstanding representative for the people of Lindsay,” he said.

“I look forward to campaigning with him in the lead-up to the next election, whenever it is.”

Penrith: Man riding motorised scooter nabbed for drink driving A man has been charged with drink driving and driving offences in Penrith.

About 2.10pm on Wednesday, December 8, police sighted an unregistrable motor scooter on Henry Street, Penrith.

The vehicle is classed as a prohibited vehicle as listed by the Road and Maritime Services so would therefore cannot be registered or insured.

The rider, a 63-year-old Emu Plains man, was stopped and spoken to.

It is alleged the man was asked if he had a driver’s licence which he responded, “no”.

Checks revealed the man was the holder of a NSW Driver’s Licence, which expired in 2014.

The man was breath tested, which proved positive, before he was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station.

He underwent a breath analysis, which returned a positive reading of 0.89.

The man was charged and will appear in Penrith Local Court on Monday, December 20.

Penrith: Local family busted stealing cakes from Cold Rock About 2pm on Saturday, December 11, it is alleged a 41-year-old Penrith woman and her family attended an ice cream parlour in Penrith.

While at the location, they allegedly stole several cakes.

Images of the family were uploaded to the ice cream parlour’s Facebook page and the woman was identified.

About 6pm on December 12, police attended the woman’s address to issue a Criminal Infringement Notice to the value of $300 for the offence of ‘shoplifting’.

Penrith: Argument over lighter results in frightening bashing

A man has been charged following an altercation in Penrith on Monday.

About 1.45pm on Monday, December 13, a 49-year-old Penrith man and a 59-yearold Penrith man were walking on Woodriff Street, Penrith.

It is alleged the men have had a verbal

The 49-year-old man allegedly punched the 59-year-old man several times without warning, and pushed him against a wall, where he allegedly continued punching him in the head.

The 49-year-old picked up a fabric shopping trolley and hit the 59-year-old in the head with it.

Police and paramedics were contacted, before the younger man was arrested.

The older man was taken to hospital with a large laceration to the back of his head and a small laceration to his face.

The 49-year-old man was charged with ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’ and ‘possess prohibited drug’.

He was bail refused and appeared in Penrith Local Court on December 14.

Penrith: Drunk man caught urinating on himself at Train Station A man has been charged with assault and offensive behaviour in Penrith.

About 1.15am on Monday, December 13, a 56-year-old Eastlakes man was at Penrith Railway Station.

It is alleged he was heavily under the influence of alcohol and had hit his head, which required medical assistance.

When paramedics arrived, the man was unconscious but they managed to wake him. After becoming alert, the man was allegedly aggressive and abusive towards the Ambulance Officers, swearing and threatening them.

The officers believed the man needed to be transported to hospital, before he started to remove his clothing and threw it at them.

The man started to put his clothing back on, before becoming aggressive again, stating he needed to go to the toilet.

The man then pulled his pants down, removed his penis and urinated on himself and the platform whilst laying on the ground.

The man was sedated and taken to hospital and police attended a short time later. He was charged and will appear in Penrith Local Court on Friday, February 4.

A Power of Attorney is a document that enables you to appoint a person or people to stand in your shoes and do anything that you could do with respect to your business and financial matters in the event that you cannot do so yourself due to incapacity (Enduring Power of Attorney) or at your direction (General Power of Attorney). The types of things your attorney can do include signing contracts, buying and selling property, contacting utilities providers, operating bank accounts and anything else to do with your business and financial affairs.

The most common reason that people require the assistance of an attorney is due to physical absence or incapacity (such as dementia, Alzheimer’s or if you are in a coma). Confusion often arises as between the role of an attorney versus an executor because to a degree they involve overlapping duties.

The best way to distinguish the two is that a Power of Attorney immediately comes to an end upon the death of a person at which time the Will is enlivened and the executor essentially takes over the attorney’s role in the sense that they become the legal personal

representative of the estate and pending a grant of probate other person or people solely authorised to deal with estate matters including collecting estate assets and distributing them in accordance with the Will.

Where an attorney’s power and/or authority comes to an immediate end upon the principal’s death, an executor has no power until a person has died and in most cases has no formal authority until a grant of probate is made in their favour or in some cases a grant of letters of administration with the Will annexed.

An Enduring Guardianship is a different beast. An Enduring Guardianship is a document under which a person appoints a person or people to make decisions about their health and lifestyle if they cannot make said decisions themselves. Unlike a Power of Attorney, which generally comes into effect immediately upon execution, an Enduring Guardianship only comes into effect when and if a person loses their capacity to make their own decisions about their health and lifestyle.

In this case a person’s guardian is in charge of deciding things like where a person lives, whether or not a person needs to be a resident in a care facility, what domestic and other services a person might require and consenting to things like medical/dental treatment.

Just like a Power of Attorney, a guardian’s authority immediately comes to an end upon the death of a principal.

Post-death it is the executor who is in charge of executing the terms of the Will and administering the deceased person’s estate which, in most cases, also extends to organising the deceased’s funeral and taking possession and/or disposing of the deceased’s remains (for example ashes) in accordance with the deceased’s wishes.

Δ Asuka Japanese Kitchen. North Penrith and the nearby Thornton estate has become a bit of a food hub in recent months, and last weekend The Source paid a visit to yet another new outlet for lunch. Asuka Japanese Kitchen arrived in the neighbourhood recently, and it didn’t disappoint!

Δ Five Guys to the rescue. The Source paid a visit to Five Guys last Saturday night, and boy was it busy!

Unfortunately, our order of one hotdog, one bacon cheeseburger and one small fries went missing and we were left waiting an unusually long time for our number to be called. When the team at Five Guys were made aware of the problem, they instantly offered to upgrade our fries and made us a milkshake ‘on the house’ as compensation. Usually places like these don’t bother to go above and beyond for their customers when something goes wrong, but Five Guys certainly did. Well done!

Last Friday afternoon Café 2773 in Glenbrook hosted the Penrith Men’s Walk & Talk Legends Lunch – or what we’ve dubbed the ‘Penrith Hall of Fame’. Among the big names in attendance were Penrith’s premiership-winning coach Ivan Cleary, his superstar son Nathan Cleary, 2003 premiership-winning Panthers skipper Craig Gower, 2003 Clive Churchill Medallist Luke Priddis, and four-time Olympic medallist Jessica Fox. Chopper boss clears Sydney Helicopters owner Mark Harrold sets the record straight on the ALENA HIGGINS

T

he applicant of a helipad proposed for Penrith Lakes has moved to allay community concerns amid fears his business will suffer significant financial hardship while he awaits a determination.

Owner of Sydney Helicopters, Mark Harrold, was forced to acquire new land after the NSW Government compulsorily acquired his Rosehill site, where he had operated for more than 27 years.

He said gross misleading falsehoods that there would be up to 50 helicopter movements every day, low-level flying and that the subject land was actually intended for parkland, were currently circulating in the community, especially in Waterside Estate, Cranebrook.

“We will not be flying over Cranebrook or Waterside at all and we will not be conducting low-level flying,” he stressed.

“The acquired site was never proposed to be public parkland, it was the old PLDC administration and works depot site.”

Mr Harrold said his operations were ultimately governed by an EPA licence.

“The EPA licence we had at Rosehill, which is all I’m seeking to do here, is called ‘Helicopter Activities Up To 1,500 Movements Per Year’,” he said.

“1,500 movements per year equates to 750 flights per year, which equates to about two flights per day on average.

“If I were to do 25 flights per day, I would exhaust all our flights after one month, so I would be idle for 11 months of the year.

“At the end of the day, we’re not talking

25 flights per day, on the days we fly we’re talking probably something like two to six flights per day and a lot of days we don’t fly at all.”

The proposal, currently on public exhibition, “seeks to construct and operate a helipad facility with a maximum of 25 aircraft movements per day, operating from first light until 10pm,” according to the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE).

Mr Harrold said they were re-purposing existing buildings on site, not constructing additional ones, and the bulk of his operations were providing essential emergency services.

Just this week, he was requested to send two of his aircraft to Western Australia to help with the firefighting effort there.

“I’m a responsible businessman that operates helicopters that provide essential services, that’s pretty much what we do for the bulk of our work,” he said.

“90 per cent of it is firefighting, flood relief, powerline inspection work, land management, feral animal control and a comparatively small amount is tourism.

“And the tourism part is not joy flights up the Mountains, it’s private charter connecting Penrith with Sydney Harbour, Central Coast, Mudgee, Bathurst, Hunter Valley, South Coast and the Hawkesbury.

“Tourism is what keeps our crews employed on a day-to-day basis allowing us to have our aircraft available for emergency work when the need arises.”

In a written statement from Chris Wyatt, a member of the local anti-helicopter group, he stressed they were not fighting Sydney Helicopters but the “obviously

the air proposed helipad for Penrith Lakes rushed and clumsy efforts of the State Government to move them out of the way of their Western Metro and onto a piece of land within the Penrith Lakes scheme”.

“For over 30 years we have been told that this land is destined to be lakes and parkland for the use of the Sydney community but now it is being sold off to unsuitable commercial interests to just get them out of their way,” the statement reads.

“As someone who has owned a local small business I can understand the frustration of Sydney Helicopters with such a huge overhead just sitting there unused while the State tries to sort out its mess.

“This public process started in August yet has just been re-opened to public comment until January because of “technical difficulties”.

“How about they do what they should have done in the first place and move Sydney Helicopters to a suitably placed commercial site far from homes and parkland and properly compensate them for their huge costs?”

Mr Harrold said he and a consulting firm had “scoured” the Sydney area for a new home after the State Government dropped the bombshell in late 2019 during the

Black Summer bushfires that it required the Rosehill site for the new Metro West rail.

The Lakes, which was already zoned tourism and permitted helipads, was deemed the most appropriate site.

He said the only difference between the term ‘helipad’ and ‘heliport’, is that a heliport is open to the public allowing for a potential restaurant or cafe on the site.

The heliport classification is the subject of a separate planning application.

Like many homeowners along the earmarked Metro corridor, Mr Harrold is now fighting tooth and nail through the courts to secure “meaningful compensation” from the State Government.

In the meantime, he is bleeding about $150,000 per month while his business stands still.

“The way we have been treated does not meet the pub test,” he said.

“To fly around for 4,200 hours dropping 48 million litres of water on NSW in the space of six months during those fires, and then to be six months later pushed aside and basically bullied into being extinguished by Transport for NSW does not resonate with people,” he said.

Give plastics the boot Ditch the cling wrap and aluminium foil for this fabulous local invention EMILY FESZCZUK

W

ith the community encouraged to be more sustainable, a St Clair local is leading the way inventing an award-winning environmentally friendly product.

Albert David created Flexsil-lid, an invention which replaces single use plastic film and foil in commercial kitchens – it has taken the world by storm.

While he did not have a background in hospitality, Mr David said he created the re-usable lid because he saw a need in the market.

“My ex-wife had an industrial takeaway business so I saw how much plastic cling wrap and aluminium foil gets used in kitchen to cook things or store them,” he told the Weekender.

“I thought there must be a better alternative and immediately thought of silicone because of the café and muffin trays that use it.”

Mr David said the food and hospital grade silicone product has a range of benefits.

“The lids are used to cover a range of six

pan tray sizes to keep food fresh without leaking, and if you use it to cover food when you cook, it will be softer and tender as all the juices stay inside,” he said.

“It is oven, freezer, microwave and dishwasher safe, plus you can write on it and use it over and over again.”

Appearing on Channel 10’s ‘Shark Tank’ program several years ago’, Flexsil-lid has won international awards and is being distributed to businesses around the globe.

Saying he could have never predicted the popularity, Mr David just hopes to continue providing quality and alternate products for cooking.

“I didn’t do it for the accolades but I am just happy it is out there and will hopefully create a legacy for my children in the future,” Mr David said.

“There are already taxes in the UK if you use plastic and I am sure it is going to hit here, so we have an option ready that is much better for the environment.”

Mr David also plans to release tray and lid options for use in the home to the market in the future.

he Lions Club of Penrith is roaring with pride after raising $25,000 to support the Nepean Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The Club drew its trailer raffle, with $8,000 worth of prizes, at Southlands Shopping Centre last Thursday with Federal Member for Lindsay, Melissa McIntosh in attendance.

Lions Club of Penrith President, Charles Wheeler, said the members worked hard with support from the community to successfully fundraise to buy medical equipment used for newborn babies.

“With the support of IMB Bank, Southern Cross Trailers, Harvey Norman,

Bunnings and many other generous businesses in the Penrith area, the club raised over $10,000 from the trailer raffle,” he said.

“This, combined with a $10,000 grant from IMB Bank and $5,000 from previous fund raising, means we met our target and will present the equipment in the new year.”

After a tough year for charity organisations, Mr Wheeler said they could not do what they do without generous locals buying tickets.

“The majority of people buy tickets to support the Neonatal Unit and the prize is only a secondary consideration. This is the wonderful community spirit that exists in the Penrith area,” he said.

Penrith Council will extend the operating hours of the free car park to midnight on Friday and Saturday nights.

Council’s General Manager Warwick Winn said Council wants to support businesses by allowing customers to stay longer in the CBD. “Local businesses have faced many hurdles over the past 18 months and with the lifting of restrictions we are seeing the community return to the City Centre to take advantage of great shopping, food and entertainment,” he said.

Judges Place Car Park offers free parking with a mix of all day, one and two hour spots.

Penrith CBD Corporation CEO Gai Hawthorn said they asked Council to extend the hours so customers had access to safe and easy parking.

“Council was very receptive to our approach which allows visitors more time to enjoy a meal and entertainment, and a stroll through the CBD,” she said.

“Visitors can check out the Christmas tree and decorations as well as enjoying some of the Christmas characters that will be out and about on Friday and Saturday evenings.”

he Penrith community is invited to join in the festive spirit at a Christmas Day lunch hosted by MOSAIC Community Church at Llandilo Community Hall.

Heath Wiley, who is the Pastor at MOSAIC in Jordan Springs and Chaplain at Llandilo Public School, said he is excited to help organise the lunch which will begin at 12pm.

Still the same great pizza Henry Street pizza shop waves goodbye to owner as new chapter begins EMILY FESZCZUK

A

slice of Penrith since 1983 is starting its next chapter as it undergoes new ownership.

Sam Simonetta, who owned Ronnie’s Pizza House on Henry Street for nearly four decades, is retiring at the end of the year and passing the business on.

Mr Simonetta, who has served up countless pizzas in his time, said it was a hard decision to sell the business to Moey Hallani earlier in the year.

“I also train greyhounds, so my great manager Peter was mostly running the shop, but when he sadly passed away from cancer it unfortunately became too much for just me,” Mr Simonetta said.

“I was in Hallani’s in Kingswood getting a hamburger when I started telling Moey I was looking to sell, and it all started from there.”

“I loved associating with everyone and never thought I would sell, so I want to make sure the quality and reputation keeps going well into the future.”

Impressed by the loyal customer base, Mr Hallani hopes to continue the strong reputation the store has.

“My parents had a shop before I was born so I have been in customer service since I was tall enough to see over the counter,” Mr Hallani told the Weekender.

“When I talked to Sam and saw the potential with the customer base and the brand he has created, I decided to be a part of it and I really enjoy what I am doing.”

2022 will see some changes to the shopfront and menu, but delicious food is guaranteed Mr Hallani said.

“Sam has taught me about the generous toppings and making sure we have a smooth transition with minimal change, but I will be adding my own modern touch with a new menu from next year,” he said.

“The pizzas will stay the same, but I will be adding in-house made chicken wings, parmigiana, ribs, arancini balls, along with some drinks and desserts.”

The Royce wins major award EMILY FESZCZUK

T

he Royce Retirement Living and Aged Care has taken out top spot at the 2021 Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) NSW Crown Group Awards for Excellence.

The Royce Penrith was named winner of the Excellence in Retirement Living award category, in conjunction with their architectural partners, Calderflower.

The UDIA recognises the year’s most innovative and outstanding urban development projects and the people behind them across 18 categories.

While thrilled to have won, The Royce Director, Bianca Tulich told the Weekender that the whole team was quite surprised.

“We were absolutely shocked, just because of the calibre of the other finalists we were up against with great developments from well-known operators, but western Sydney came through,” Ms Tulich said.

“We had to explain our vision and as part of the process the judges had to come through and there were blown away by the way the whole site works and integrates independent living and aged care.”

Some of the key elements that impressed the judges were the landscaping, facilities and services offered at the complex.

“Having award-winning chef Ross Dobson running Café Royce adds a level of difference to the community, and the hair salon for residents and guests,” she said.

“It really is a vibrant, buzzing place that residents enjoy living in, but their friends and family from the community also enjoy visiting as well.”

Opening in 2019, Ms Tulich said they are committed to setting hire standards for exceptional retirement living.

“Our whole idea from the beginning was to create a destination that is a beautiful space but with subtle design features, such as wider corridors, no steps and non-slip tiles,” she said.

“No one wants to feel they are getting old, so we provide great care, in modern, youthful apartments, so you can age gracefully in your own home for as long as you can.”

Mammoth health hub North St Marys will be home to a $4.6 million health, rec and retail centre ALENA HIGGINS

T

he former Masters site at North St Marys will receive a re-birth, with Penrith Council approving plans for a health and wellness precinct.

To be known as HealthCo, the 3.2 hectare site will feature 14 tenancies including a medical centre, vet, dentist, physio and gym.

A 138-space childcare centre, indoor recreational facility, imaging, pet supplier and speciality retail, health food and coffee kiosks are also slated for the Forrester Road site.

Lodged last December, the $4.6 million project is tipped to generate dozens of local jobs and provide services currently in “acute under-supply” in the vicinity, according to supporting documents.

HomeCo, which acquired Masters’ assets soon after its collapse in 2016, is behind the development application (DA), which seeks to alter the existing warehouse and car parking area.

About 130 jobs are expected to be generated from the redevelopment, while car spaces will increase by five, taking the total number to 372.

In July 2020, a Planning Proposal, which sought to amend building height controls

over the site to support a four-storey residential aged care facility, was lodged.

However, this was knocked back by Council and subsequently withdrawn.

HomeCo, a wholly Australian-owned property group, has a growing presence in the Penrith area.

It has already revitalised the former Masters site on Mulgoa Road, Penrith, which is now home to a number of established lifestyle brands, with plans also afoot to establish a daycare centre on a

portion of the existing car park.

Late last year, it purchased the Glenmore Park Town Centre and recently lodged a $12 million DA for major improvements to the eastern edge of the shopping centre.

Woolworths sunk about $3.25 billion into its failed foray into the home improvement sector before it shut Masters’ doors back in 2016. The Weekender reached out to HomeCo to find out when it planned to start construction on HealthCo, but it said it was not in a position to comment.

New Taskforce to boost tourism

A

n exciting new taskforce has been established to promote Penrith as a major tourist destination ahead of the delivery of the Western Sydney International Airport.

International and Australian visitors will be lured to Penrith in a joint Taskforce initiative established by Destination New South Wales, Penrith City Council and

Penrith Valley Chamber.

The new Tourism and Visitor Economy Taskforce will bring together representatives from Penrith Valley Chamber, Local and State governments as well as private sector interests to grow the visitor economy throughout the Penrith Valley Region.

Consisting of at least five experienced

industry members, to be announced in the coming days, the Taskforce will help shape Penrith’s future tourism roadmap and will be responsible for creating private and public campaign funding models to grow the profile and attractiveness of Penrith Valley for visitors.

“We are excited to be part of a joint Taskforce to maximise the growing opportuni-

ties the new Western Sydney International Airport will provide,” Penrith Valley Chamber representative, Richard Fox said.

“The natural landscape of rivers, mountains and lakes is our unique value proposition, and our mission is to help make Penrith ready for new levels of visitation from Australia and around the world.”

Penrith sits within Destination Sydney Surrounds North (DSSN), one of six Destination Networks funded by Destination NSW to work with regions to grow the visitor economy.

DSSN, which has boosted tourism and the visitor economy in the Blue Mountains, Hunter Valley and Port Stephens, now has its eyes squarely on Penrith and has been working closely with Penrith City Council to kick start the Taskforce.

“Penrith is definitely the next cab off the rank as far as we are concerned presenting a great opportunity for the future visitor,” DSSN General Manager, Glenn Caldwell said.

“Our role is to do the ground work, help prepare the industry for a broader market uptake and ensure that Penrith is a real destination in its own right in the eye of the traveller.”

TURNING BACK TIME The building is an iconic retail strip at 556-558 High Street, Penrith.

This photo was taken in July 1986 and was occupied at the time by Working Gear and Riverlands Real Estate.

It formerly housed George Pike’s produce store, T.M. Masters general store and a lolly shop.

In the 1960s, Dempsey’s Nursery occupied the building.

Many of the buildings from the Penrith retail precinct of the late 19th and early 20th century have been demolished or extensively altered over time.

However, various retail outlets from this period still remain such as the one pictured here, which is occupied by Thrifty these days.

ROCK SHOW MUST GO ON EMILY FESZCZUK ears in the making, ‘The Rock Show Oz Edition’ will hit the EVAN Theatre stage early next year.

The show was the last in a long line of rock shows put together by late Australian rock icon, Jon English.

Jon’s long-term partner and co-producer, Coralea Cameron told the Weekender the show was in initial rehearsals when Jon passed away in 2016.

“We had done our other shows ‘Rock Revolution’ and ‘Trilogy of Rock’ then de-

cided to focus on Aussie bands,” Coralea explained.

“The show was all put together, the band was booked in and the tour was due to kick off in May, but Jon died in March.”

After grieving, Coralea decided that the show must go on to honour Jon’s immense presence in the music industry.

“I put it on the backburner after Jon passed but a lot of the acts featured were Jon’s peers and we had a medley of his songs planned,” she said.

“It took me five years to pick up the pieces but I think he would be happy I am doing it as he loved nothing more than to be on a stage entertaining people, so we are

continuing that legacy.”

The two-and-half hour show celebrates Australian rock music spanning across three decades, including The Masters Apprentices, Billy Thorpe and Russell Morris.

“Steve Mulry from the Ted Mulry Gang is involved and the band we will have at Panthers is the last one Jon played with, which will be special,” Coralea said.

“A feature of this show is everyone sings or plays multiple instruments, and everybody has their moment in the spotlight, which is something that Jon encouraged in all our ‘Rock Shows’.”

With a large repertoire of songs, Coralea said there is something for everyone.

“We do the Divinyls, the big soaring vocals of Air Supply, the hard rock of Cold Chisel, and the first half is the ‘60s and ‘70s, then we move into the ‘80s for the second half,” she said.

“There is an eclectic mix of songs and so many Aussie anthems that people will recognise, so for most people it should be a soundtrack of their younger years and remind them when music just exploded.”

As live performances start to return following lockdown, Ruby Productions will present Robert Johanson’s play, ‘Jane Eyre: Life at Lowood’ early next year.

This is the story focused on Jane’s difficult youth as an orphan left with uncaring relative Aunt Reed who eventually sends her to Lowood – a poor boarding school run by cruel Mr Brocklehurst.

Trapped in horrible conditions, Jane is able to overcome her experience and form lifelong friendships while building her character.

With cricket back on our screens, it won’t be long before our other favourite summer sport, tennis, is as well. Channel Nine has confirmed dates for its Summer of Tennis starting with the ATP Cup in Sydney on January 1. A new one-off tournament, the Sydney Tennis Classic, will be played from January 9-15; while the Adelaide International will be held from January 3-15. But the one we’ll be waiting for is the Australian Open, which will kick off on January 17 and run for two weeks.

You’ll be able to watch every match of the Aussie Open live on Nine, 9Gem and 9Now.

10 tips for a happy holiday period F

or the second year in a row we are dragging ourselves to the end of an exhausting and unpredictable year, so no one can blame us for wanting to let our hair down this festive season.

However we can’t afford to become complacent. Royal Life Saving Australia research shows that Australians are twice more likely to drown on a public holiday than any other day of the year, with a total of 210 Australians drowning on public holidays over the past 15 years.

Holiday makers are at highest risk, being 2.5 times more likely to drown due to lack of knowledge and familiarly of the local water ways.

Alcohol is a significant contributor to public holiday drowning deaths, and it’s men that are commonly susceptible to a higher risk, with the report showing men are four times more likely to drown than women. We need to do all within our control to minimise the risks.

These are my top 10 water safety tips for a happy holiday period...

1. Avoid alcohol around water.

2. Check for snags and currents before entering inland waterways and rivers.

3. Know your limits and never swim alone, or when intoxicated.

4. Swim at patrolled beaches between the flags and learn how to spot rip currents.

5. Children under five should be arms reach at the beach, at the pool, and in every other aquatic environment, always.

6. Fence the pool, checked and close

all gates and make sure they are selflatching.

7. Be aware of other household items which represent a drowning risk, i.e.

Eskies, inflatable pools, bathtubs, buckets, fishponds, even pet bowls.

Children have drowned in less water than a drink bottle can hold.

8. Make supervision of children the priority around all water – delegate a supervisor at all events with the adults talking turns on rotation. Never assume someone else is watching.

9. Learn how to perform CPR and use an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator).

10. Teach children to swim and continue to attend lessons regularly. It may be tempting to drop lessons as life gets busy but until children reach their age related milestones swimming lessons should remain non-negotiable. Be sure to utilise all of the NSW Government vouchers currently available, such as the First Lap and Active Kids vouchers to ensure your child becomes a capable swimmer. Don’t let your 2021 Active Kids go to waste, they expire on December 31.

Drownings remain a risk at home, where we are often most relaxed and assume nothing bad will happen.

DVT risks and how to prevent it A

Deep Venous Thrombosis, also commonly known as a DVT, is a condition when a blood clot forms within a deep vein usually in your legs.

Last week we discussed in brief about DVT and that they present a form of a swollen leg, however it has been known to present with either some or no symptoms. The most common symptoms are swelling, pain, abnormal discolouring of the skin, and heat.

Blood circulates throughout our body through arteries (away from the heart) and veins (towards the heart) to working muscles in demand for oxygen and other nutrients. The circulation back to the heart from the legs is one of the hardest to obtain. This is due to gravity creating a pull for blood to flow back to the feet. Veins have valves that prevent back flow to allow circulation to continue.

Valves can become ineffective due to damage from high pressure causing back flow to occur. Any changes in blood flow causes turbulence and the potential formation of a blood clot. There then poses a risk that the blood clot can travel to and get lodged in the lungs causing a pulmonary embolism.

An individual’s risk of a blood clot

increases with inactivity as the calf muscle aids the ‘milking’ action of blood back up the leg against gravity.

Risk factors include: Working environments that require prolonged sitting or standing, cardiac and peripheral vascular

conditions, post-operative recovery when individuals are either bed bound or in an immobilisation boot, pregnancy, underlying medical conditions such as irregular heart rhythms, obesity, personal or family history of DVT, genetics.

DVTs are a medical emergency and need to be adequately assessed. Often patients may be required to go on anti-coagulation medication and having a podiatrist routinely care for your feet is recommended.

Christmas lilies: The toxic chemical in lilies that causes injuries to the kidneys is unknown but all components of the plant are toxic – this includes the petals, stamen, leaves and pollen. As little as one leaf or part of a single flower has been reported to cause death.

Decorations such as tinsel and fairy lights are very attractive to pets (especially cats) but can lead to a gastric obstruction if eaten.

Ribbons and string tied around presents are also super attractive to cats and if ingested can lead to a nasty gastric obstruction requiring emergency surgery.

The Christmas tree can be a real attraction to your pets. Whether real or artificial, the tree can be a hazard if your cat has a tendency to climb things they shouldn’t. Also, the oils produced by some real Christmas trees are also mildly toxic if consumed, causing irritation to a pet’s mouth and stomach

10. Lots of visitors to your house can cause your pet to become stressed and even lead to them trying to escape, so make sure they have a safe and quiet place to retreat to.

11. Snakes are already out and about.

Take care in long grass, around water or areas where there are rodents (grain sheds and chicken pens are common places.) Many snakes can be seen on the Nepean River walk so take care.

12. Heatstroke: Never leave your pet in the car during the warmer weather as heat stroke can occur very quickly.

Even on a mild day, the temperature inside a car can reach dangerous levels in minutes. Leaving a window down will not help either, so don’t risk it! It’s best to avoid car trips in the heat with your pet unless absolutely necessary.

3. Desserts: Desserts are everyone’s favourite part of Christmas, but they can be deadly for dogs especially if they involve chocolate, xylitol or alcohol. The compounds in both chocolate and xylitol can be fatal to dogs. The symptoms of chocolate poisoning include seizures, heart arrhythmias, and muscle tremors.

Within 30 minutes of ingestion, xylitol will cause a fast, dangerous drop in blood sugar levels accompanied by disorientation and seizures.

Some dogs can even develop liver failure, which may lead to death.

4. Macadamia nuts: While they are very popular at Christmas, Macadamia nuts can be toxic to dogs if ingested.

The toxicity leads to muscle weakness, vomiting and tremors 5. BBQ skewers can be catastrophic for pets if they are accidentally ingested.

oyota has taken the covers off its all-new Corolla Cross, which will be launched in Australia in the second half of 2022.

The small SUV version of the world’s most popular passenger car joins the new Yaris Cross launched last year as Toyota continues to expand its SUV range.

The all-new model will be available in Australia with a choice of front-wheel drive (2WD) petrol and hybrid drivetrains and an AWD model that introduces the latest 2.0-litre hybrid powertrain for the first time in a Toyota vehicle. All models will also include a raft of improved Toyota Safety Sense features.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations, Sean Hanley, said the all-new Corolla Cross will meet the demands of small SUV buyers as a practical, versatile and stylish small SUV. “We know Australians love their SUVs and Toyota is continuing to meet that demand by offering an ever-growing range of models, all of which are introduc-

ing our fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain and advanced safety technology,” he said.

“The all-new Corolla Cross delivers the sort of style, versatile space and dynamic driving characteristics that will appeal to young families and couples alike.”

F

or the first time since 2012, GWS are returning to a three-captain model with Stephen Coniglio, Toby Greene and Josh Kelly to lead the Giants in 2022.

Greene, who is suspended for the first five rounds of next season, and Kelly have been elevated to co-captains alongside current skipper Coniglio.

As the Giants enter their 11th season in the competition, the trio will mark a new era for the club as they continue chase their first ever AFL title.

Greene and Kelly will be the club’s fifth and sixth permanent captains in the club’s history, following in the footsteps of Luke Power, Callan Ward, Phil Davis and alongside Coniglio.

The three will be supported by five players in the club’s leadership group, including Nick Haynes for the first time.

Current leadership group members Phil Davis, Matt de Boer, Lachie Whitfield and Jacob Hopper will all continue in their roles.

Giants General Manager of Football, Jason McCartney, congratulated the group.

“We’re really excited to have Stephen,

Toby and Josh lead us into the 2022 season and beyond,” he said.

“The decision was made in line with extensive feedback from the players and staff with all three clear standouts.

“We feel this is a really strong model for us moving into the future with three impressive leaders and performers who complement each other’s skills on and off the field.

Penrith scores new Penrith Stadium will be demolished in 2023, new stadium to open in 2025 NATHAN TAYLOR

t’s been a long time coming but it’s finally official – Penrith, the home of the mighty Panthers, is a getting a new stadium.

Confirmed at media event last Thursday, the NSW Government will redevelop Penrith Stadium as part of its commitment to turn suburban venues into world-class facilities.

Work on the 25-30,000 seat stadium will begin at the start of 2023 and is expected to take two years to complete. It means the 2021 NRL Premiers will play their final season at the current venue in 2022 before moving to CommBank Stadium in Parramatta for two seasons.

Speaking with the Weekender, NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said the allnew Penrith Stadium is a huge win for the west.

“We want to have a great suburban stadium strategy for NSW and we’ve got thriving cities out here in western Sydney and we want them to have the very best,” he said.

Mr Perrottet said Parramatta was “brought to life” as a global city in 2019 when CommBank Stadium opened its

“This stadium is going to be great for rugby league but it’s also going to be great for the community,” he said.

“We’re going to open it up – more events,

more culture – and the west deserves the best and that’s exactly what this stadium is going to be.

“It’s estimated to be a $300 million investment… it’s going to be for music, for events, for culture – it’s going to be brilliant.

“This is the type of vision we want for our state, we’re not going to sit back and let western Sydney stagnate – we’re going to take it to the next level.

“This stadium has been a pretty tired, old stadium for some time. It’s a great institution but we’re going to make a better one.”

Just what the new Penrith Stadium will look like in 2025 is anyone’s guess, with the design phase set to get underway in due course.

With Panthers members and fans expected to get the most use out of the new stadium when it opens, Penrith MP and Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres assured supporters they will be consulted during the design phase next year.

“Absolutely! When we enter that design phase, we’ll definitely offer up opportunities for fans in the community to tell us what they want,” he told the Weekender.

“It’s not about having sporting matches here; it’s about making sure this site and this part of Penrith is activated every day of the week with business and entertainment opportunities.”

The Weekender understands, due to the stadium’s site and its proximity to local streets, that designers will likely have to reorient the field.

Mr Ayres said the 25,000-seat Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville could be somewhat of an inspiration for what the modern-day Penrith Stadium could become.

“I think the best reference point for people if they are looking for a venue around the country is what’s in North Queensland at Townsville,” he said.

“It’s about the same size and there’s potential opportunities around whether you leave one end open or not.”

Over at the Penrith Panthers, the club has already started marketing next year as “the final season” at the current Penrith Stadium – hoping to attract more members and fans to the venue before the curtain finally comes down on the iconic local attraction.

Panthers Group CEO Brian Fletcher said the club was beyond thrilled with the long-awaited news.

“It’s fantastic, it’s been a work in progress for about five to seven years and to finally

come here today and have the Premier and local Member [Stuart Ayres] announce that we are going to get $300 million to build a new stadium is great news for the city of Penrith,” he said.

“It’s badly needed… the city is growing that quickly and to have an all-purpose stadium will bring a lot more product to the place and having a big Leagues Club across the road, it will benefit that as well.

“It will just be a benefit to the whole Penrith district and that’s the main thing.”

SBL bounces into Kingswood NATHAN TAYLOR

S

ydney Basketball League (SBL) has moved into Kingswood at the indoor courts of Kingswood High School, looking to cater for the large numbers of people who want to play social basketball.

With so many Aussies smashing it in the NBA, the love of basketball in Australia is on full display with overflowing basketball courts throughout the length and breadth of this country.

However, it now seems the demand for these facilities is outstripping supply.

“In Sydney, it is not so much that the number of basketball courts is diminishing but rather the numbers of people looking to play a game is significantly increasing,” SBL Manager, John Hagar.

“Basketball is one of the most popular sports played at school. When students leave school and begin their working life, there are unfortunately not as many facilities that allow them to keep playing basketball in Sydney.”

Founded in 1997, SBL is the first and largest private basketball association in Australia with over 1000 players, officials

and referees. SBL has established competitions in Blacktown, Ryde, Caringbah, Glebe and Lidcombe.

“Players want to play. SBL allows this,” Hagar said.

“The local associations will cater for elite competitions. SBL in Kingswood will cater for social players whom may not necessarily be the best players but are passionate about the game.

“Players come first and we look after them the best we can.”

In response to the surge in player interest, SBL has implemented innovative technology by developing their own sports administration app that allows staff to take players statistics during a game and then immediately upload in real time to the SBL website. This type of application is an Australian first for any basketball competition.

“In business, customer service is paramount. Our philosophy at SBL is to give players the best experience we can,” Hagar said.

“We ensure each game is fully timed, there are always two referees per game and there is no duty ever.”

Around The Grounds CRICKET: Penrith have continued their up and down start to the season, going down to Randwick Petersham in Round 6 of the Belvidere Cup. Playing in a One Day (reduced to 28 overs) match at Howell Oval, Penrith won the toss and sent Randwick Petersham into bat first. With play delayed until 3pm due to the wet pitch, Randwick Petersham set a decent target of 6/174. When Penrith hit the crease later that day, they batted well but fell awfully close of victory on 5/169. Ty Liddiard was best with the bat for Penrith, notching up 44 runs. Penrith will aim to bounce back this Saturday when they travel to battle UNSW. CRICKET: Round 6 of the Nepean District Cricket Association (NDCA) is in the books, with Panthers Cricket Club only playing one game due to rain. In first and fifth grade, Panthers’ games were washed out. In seventh grade, Panthers 8/97 went down to Cranebrook 2/100. With warmer weather ahead, it’s hoped the teams can finally get on the pitch for some cricket this weekend.

Wanderers have suffered their first loss of the season, going down to rivals Macarthur 2-0 at CommBank Stadium last Saturday. Following the match, under fire Wanderers coach Carl Robinson said he’s to blame for his side’s rocky start to the season. “Don’t blame the players, if you want to blame anyone blame me,” he said. “I’m thick-skinned enough and I know football is a results-

driven business. The one thing people can’t criticise is my work ethic or my will to win. I will try and do that as much as I can. I will continue to work with the players and they have my backing and they will drown out the noise.” The Wanderers will travel to Gosford this Saturday to face the Central Coast Mariners. It’s feared if the Wanderers lose to the fifth-placed Mariners, Robinson could be out of a job before Christmas.

Meanwhile in the A-League Women, the Wanderers were no match for Sydney FC, losing 2-0 in the earlier match.

RUGBY LEAGUE: St Clair Comets legend Bill Borg is stepping down as Club Secretary after more than 30 years of service. Borg, who has seen the likes of former juniors Stephen Crichton, Matt Moylan and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak blossom in the NRL, will continue his role as Ground Manager and “help out” in the canteen when needed. Congratulations Bill on a remarkable contribution to rugby league in the Penrith District.

SOFTBALL: Congratulations to Penrith City Softball Association (PCSA) member Bridie Murphy, who took out Junior Female Athlete of the Year at the Softball NSW Awards Presentation earlier this month. Bridie had a busy year representing PCSA and was also selected into numerous NSW State teams and NSW Pathway Programs. ollowing nearly a decade of persistence from the Nepean Football Association, Penrith residents are finally able to enjoy a new multi-use synthetic sports facility as part of the NSW Government and Penrith Council’s $4 million upgrade of Jamison Park.

Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said the local area’s first synthetic all-weather playing surface at Jamison Park is a game changer not only for footballers but also for other sporting codes who will be able to use the fields year-round.

“This is a huge win for Penrith residents and ensures they can now enjoy sports and fitness at one of our region’s premier sports facilities,” he said.

“I’m very excited to officially re-open Jamison Park, adding to the range of premier sporting facilities in the western Sydney region.”

The new fields will provide a surface area of close to 22,000sqm with improved drainage and lack of water retention. The upgrades include two synthetic rectangular football fields, which can accommodate eight small sided fields, a synthetic cricket wicket and a synthetic AFL oval.

“We are excited to be able to catch up to the rest of metropolitan New South Wales and we are thrilled with what we will now be able to deliver to the local community, regardless of weather impacts,” Nepean Football Association Chief Executive, Linda Cerone said.

“We are extremely grateful to Stuart for the support that we received from him to reach today’s wonderful outcome.”
