Man lucky to survive unit blaze

Dog dies in fire but firefighters manage to revive another EMILY NEWTON

man remains in hospital after being pulled from a blaze in his South Penrith unit last weekend.

At 8.30am last Saturday (December 10), Penrith police officers were patrolling Jamison Road, South Penrith, when they saw smoke coming from a unit block.

Officers forced entry into the unit but were pushed back from flames and were unable to safely enter the building.

Fire and Rescue officers attended with breathing apparatus and located the 58-year-old man unconscious. He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance Paramedics before being airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital where he is still undergoing treatment.

The man’s two dogs were located in the unit, but unfortunately officers were only able to save one.

One dog was found deceased, but firefighters used oxygen therapy to successfully revive the other, five-yearold ‘Whiskey’ who suffered smoke inhalation and minor burns.

He was taken to Nepean Animal Hospital to be treated and monitored.

Bryce Cartwright he ex-girlfriend of rugby league star Bryce Cartwright has been charged by police after a string of harassing and threatening social media posts.

24-year-old Brittany Hura was charged with ‘using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend’ and ‘stalk/intimidate with the intent to cause physical harm’.

She had been posting on social media about Cartwright, who plays for the Panthers, for weeks but the posts escalated in seriousness over the past week.

Panthers CEO Brian Fletcher said the club had been monitoring the behaviour of Ms Hura for some time.

“The priority of Panthers is to ensure the protection, safety and wellbeing of Bryce, his partner and his family. We are affording Bryce all the support we can during this difficult time,” he said.

It’s believed the NRL has been asked to be briefed on the matter. Ms Hura will front court next week.

An elderly woman was also evacuated from an adjoining property, however no

other people were injured in the blaze.

Police are investigating the fire, but at this stage the cause is not known.

Justice system without any justice he words “how could he” constantly echo when anybody reads or hears about how Andrew Nolan attacked and nearly killed toddler Bobby Webber in 2014.

Now those same words echo again, not about Andrew Nolan, but about District Court Judge Philip Ingram, who last week sentenced the vile and pathetic Nolan to a minimum of eight and a half years behind bars.

How could he?

How could he possibly think that the man that left little Bobby a quadriplegic and with lifelong struggles deserves to be out on the streets in April 2023 (thanks to time already served)?

The so-called justice system in New South Wales and Australia more broadly strikes yet again.

For those who don’t know about Bobby’s story or haven’t followed it through the Weekender, we have full coverage of last week’s sentencing and some background information on pages six and seven of this week’s paper.

I’m yet to speak to anyone who believes that the sentence Judge Ingram handed down delivers justice to little Bobby and his family.

The fact that in April 2023 Andrew Nolan may be walking among us is nothing short of frightening.

At just 40-years-old, he will get the chance to find a job, have a family and potentially be around children.

Judge Philip Ingram clearly believes that’s OK. The community does not.

Time and time again we are left shaking our collective heads at the light sentences handed down to criminals.

How could anyone look at Bobby

that followed. They are devastated by the outcome last week but quite rightly have their minds focused on Bobby, not Nolan.

Nolan deserves little of their thoughts.

Elise’s Victim Impact Statement, which she read in court back in October, was highly emotional and detailed the enormous grief and pressure that her family is now under.

More importantly it told of how a seven-month-old boy was robbed of the opportunity to live the life that was in front of him.

Robbed of it by a bloke who is a good chance of being out in the community in a little over six years.

It is an atrocious decision and falls so short of community expectations that it makes us all sick to the stomach.

But this is the system with which we are stuck.

The same legal system that on Monday cut 11 years from the non-parole period of Mitchell Barbieri, who murdered police offer Bryson Anderson in 2012.

In 2011, the NSW Parliament passed a law to amend the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW) to provide for mandatory life sentences to be imposed on persons convicted of murdering police officers.

Confused? Me too.

On Monday Barbieri was re-sentenced to at least 15 years’ jail, with a maximum term of 21 years and three months.

15 years. That, my friends, is the cost of a life. And not just any life, but the life of a police officer – a bloke just doing his job protecting the community on that afternoon in 2012.

Something needs to be done. The expectations of the community in cases like this are being wildly ignored.

Judge Ingram said the “offence involved a grave breach of trust of the victim who was especially vulnerable due to his tender age”.

Bobby was not only vulnerable, he was defenceless.

At just seven-months-old, Bobby was no match for Nolan, who left him with broken ribs, skull fractures, bite marks and forehead wounds.

Now, Nolan gets to sit in protective custody and look forward to what the rest of his life has to offer.

Bobby, meanwhile, faces a lifetime of struggle. It hardly seems fair.

our fresh-faced recruits have just finished their first week on the job at St Marys Local Area Command.

Officers Craig Turner, Leigh Jamieson, Jordana McLaurin-Smith and Rachel Daniels have just begun their police careers attached to St Marys Police Station.

The officers will be able to experience all aspects of the job by working closely with other officers, facing whatever happens in the local area.

“They’ll be working with two senior officers for a little while,” Sergeant Gordon Stacey said.

“They’ll spend the first few weeks out doing whatever work comes up. It will be a bit of everything for them.”

The students from ‘Class 329’ of the Associate Degree in Policing Practice were sworn in at an Attestation ceremony at the NSW Police Force Academy in Goulburn last Friday.

NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione welcomed 130 new probationary constables into the NSW Police Force, including the four new recruits in St Marys and one in Penrith.

Sergeant Stacey said that while each year it is luck of the draw for how many recruits each local command ends up with, he is consistently proud of the officers attached to St Marys.

“It could be anywhere between one and four recruits,” Sergeant Stacey said.

“They all seem really keen and excited

to be here. They’re a great addition to the Local Area Command.”

The recruits were full of energy and pride when the Weekender caught up with them this week, shortly after they hit the street for the first time.

“I’ve wanted to be an officer for a very long time,” Ms McLaurin-Smith admitted.

Bobby’s attacker could be out in just six years JADE ALIPRANDI

lenmore Park mother Elise Webber said she is disappointed that her baby’s abuser will serve just a minimum of eight years and six months behind bars.

Andrew Nolan appeared in Darlinghurst Courthouse last Thursday, December 8, charged with the brutal bashing of toddler Bobby Webber in 2014.

Mr Nolan was sentenced to a maximum of 12 years and six months jail.

With his minimum sentence and time already served, it makes him eligible for parole in April 2023.

As he was walked out of the courthouse, Mr Nolan astonishingly yelled “f**k you and see you in 12 years”.

The two-and-a-half-year-old’s family, including his mother Elise, bravely sat in the courthouse as the horrific details of how Bobby’s injuries came to be were retold once again At just seven-months-old Bobby, affectionately known as ‘Bobby The Brave’, was abused by his non-biological uncle, Mr Nolan, leaving him with skull fractures, brain damage, burst blood vessels behind his eyes – from being violently shaken – and a fractured vertebrae.

In handing down his sentence via audiovisual link, Judge Philip Ingram said the “offence involved a grave breach of trust of the victim who was especially vulnerable due to his tender age”.

He said Mr Nolan had given four versions of what happened on the night Bobby suffered injuries consistent with motor vehicle accidents or falls from a great height.

“It was extremely hard and difficult for us to hear that again,” Mrs Webber told the Weekender after the sentencing.

“We’re just so disappointed in the result – Bobby received a life sentence and I fully believe Andrew should have too.

“The fact he is still lying about details of the night and not actually forthcoming with the truth is hard. He will just do anything he can to receive a lesser sentence.”

It’s been a long and emotional time for the Webber family to finally find out what punishment Mr Nolan would receive.

Mrs Webber said the community is just as disappointed about the result.

“To hear that the court feels like he is capable of rehabilitating is beyond a joke – it’s really disheartening,” she said.

“We just want to thank the community for all their continued support and they’re let down just as much as we are.”

Lendlease wins contract Work on the next stage of The Northern Road upgrade is on track to start next year, with the design and major work contract awarded for a fourkilometre section.

Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure, Paul Fletcher announced Lendlease would design and build the The Northern Road between Glenmore Parkway at Glenmore Park and Jamison Road in South Penrith.

“The Northern Road upgrade is one of the major projects in the Australian and New South Wales governments’ $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan, which will provide essential road improvements for one of Australia’s fastest growing regions,” Mr Fletcher said.

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies said the upgrade aimed to reduce travel times by widening The Northern Road between Jamison Road at South Penrith and Glenmore Parkway at Glenmore Park from three to four lanes in each direction.

Traffic lights will also be installed at Glenmore Parkway to enhance safety and assist traffic movements.

“The project will also help alleviate critical pinch points and improve traffic flow by removing one set of traffic lights at the M4 interchange,” Ms Davies said.

“Construction on the project was expected to start in mid-2017 and be completed by late 2019.”

New Cranebrook shopping centre opens its doors Penrith Mayor John Thain will officially open the new Cranebrook shopping centre tomorrow (Saturday, December 17).

The popular local shopping centre has been closed for the last 12 months while it underwent a major reconstruction.

The highlights of the new centre are brand new Aldi and Woolworths supermarkets, which opened last week.

“ALDI is excited to be opening our new store at Cranebrook,” an ALDI Australia spokesperson said.

“ALDI Cranebrook has been purposebuilt with new innovations that will offer an enhanced shopping experience for our customers with better product displays, improved navigation and modern styling.”

Local residents can expect high temperatures again tomorrow after sweltering through soaring heat earlier this week.

Temperatures nudged 40 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday before a cool change finally brought relief.

A fire at Llandilo caused concern on Tuesday, but was brought under control by emergency crews.

Games at Penrith OzTag had to be cancelled on Tuesday night after heat and power surges resulted in the lights not working at the Kingsway.

Police are appealing for witnesses after an aggravated break and enter in Kingswood on Tuesday.

About 10.45am, a woman, aged in her 60s, was alone in her home on Edna Street when a man broke in.

The woman confronted the man and there was a short struggle and he ran off toward First Street, Kingswood.

Officers from St Marys attended and established a crime scene.

Investigators would like to speak with a man who may be able to assist with their inquiries.

He is described as being approximately 180cm tall and was wearing a white t-shirt and blue shorts.

errington resident Ruth Meadows was stunned when she found an unwanted guest in her garage last Sunday.

Tucked inside seeking shelter from the heat was a large red-bellied black snake.

“We were going out for dinner and had to get the car out of the garage. My husband could hear a rustling noise and then came flying out saying something was in there,” she said.

“It was right at his foot, and he was so surprised that it didn’t bite him.”

Within 15 minutes, Australian Snake Catchers, Freya and Sean Cade, had safely removed the unwanted guest from the garage.

Ms Cade said they frequently get calls about snakes found in areas people aren’t expecting them, but often it’s as simple as a small gap somewhere that allows them to enter residences.

“Every situation is different, there’s a broad spectrum of things to look out for, whether it’s garden maintenance or home safety,” she said.

“We get a lot of calls finding them in the garage or in the laundry. Generally, when it’s hot they look for anywhere they can go to retreat from the heat, or anywhere that provides shelter.”

Snake catcher Sean Cade and a redbellied black snake Ms Meadows was thankful for the swift work of the Australian Snake Catchers in not only catching the snake, but doing so with a smile.

“It’s just not where you would expect it – in 16 years I’ve never seen a snake here,” Ms Meadows said.

Crameri demands road upgrade “It will save a life”: Councillor says $30,000 needed to improve safety JADE ALIPRANDI

enrith Councillor Kevin Crameri has asked for an urgent report from Council to investigate getting two right hand turning lanes along The Northern Road at Fifth Avenue and Seventh Avenue, Llandilo.

As a firefighter for many years, Cr Crameri told the Weekender he has seen one too many crashes at both intersections and doesn’t want to wait around to see someone die.

Cr Crameri’s request follows an accident at Fifth Avenue last week where ‘car A ran up the back of car B and then hit car C head-on that was travelling in the opposite direction – all while car A was waiting to turn right onto Fifth Avenue’.

“Some people have been so lucky they haven’t been killed,” he said.

“The last accident where a car was hit head-on – if it was the one that was hit from behind that hit the next one headon, he would have been dead.

“As a firefighter, we go out there and help people get freed from cars and see all kinds of injuries – it’s not nice and it can be helped.”

Cr Crameri said it would take around $30,000 to widen the road slightly and add in two right hand turning lanes.

Penrith Council is providing extra bin collections this Christmas to assist households with any extra waste they may have from the festive period.

Council will provide two weeks of extra collections from December 26 to January 6 where residents can place all three bins at the kerbside for collection.

Penrith Mayor John Thain said Penrith residents have already got it sorted and are champions in resource recovery.

“There is an increase in household waste and recycling around Christmas Day and our residents do an excellent job of recycling and reducing waste at this time of year,” Cr Thain said.

During the weeks of extra collections, residents should place all bins out on the kerbside the evening before their normal collection day.

A teenage boy was burnt in a gas explosion in St Clair late on Wednesday afternoon.

Paramedics responded to the Lexington Avenue address just before 3.30pm where they located the male with burns to his arm.

He was placed under running water and the burns cooled for a period of time before being transported to Westmead Hospital for treatment.

A CareFlight rescue helicopter was attending the scene, however was called off as they approached the scene with paramedics able to treat the young teen.

Police attended the address to investigate the explosion.

Man accused of stabbing two women fronts court

The man accused of stabbing his mother and girlfriend with a machete at Emu Plains earlier this month has faced court.

Clinton Walker, 26, is charged with two counts of ‘causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder’, and two counts of ‘wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm’ following the horrific domestic dispute.

Walker appeared briefly before Penrith Local Court via video link last Friday as the prosecution applied for an interim forensic procedure order.

However, the matter was adjourned to December 16 after Walker’s Legal Aid lawyer flagged an issue with Walker’s “fitness” and his ability to take instructions.

It is understood the forensic procedure order relates to a blood sample taken from Walker which police want to analyse.

Police were called to a Lucas Street home just before midnight on December 4 following reports of a stabbing. Both women were conveyed to Westmead Hospital with critical injuries, including slash wounds to their heads, necks and stomach.

Walker did not apply for bail.

Man ordered to stop exposing himself at traffic lights

A man who exposed himself at a set of traffic lights has been slapped with a hefty fine.

Sakmann Dith faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday where he pleaded guilty to indecency.

“It doesn’t look as though this is the first time you’ve done this,” Magistrate Roger Clisdell said after reading the facts.

“What’s the problem, Mr Dith?”

“I just wasn’t thinking at the time,” he responded.

“Keep your penis in your pants and don’t pull it out at traffic lights and masturbate,” Magistrate Clisdell said, prompting gasps from the gallery.

“You know what they’ll do in jail if they find out you’re guilty of that offence?” he added.

He was convicted, fined $1,000 and ordered to enter into a Section 9 good behaviour bond for 12 months.

Jail time for man who assaulted good Samaritan on train

A man who assaulted a good Samaritan who tried to intervene in a domestic dispute will spend Christmas behind bars.

Michael Morris, 21, appeared before Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with ‘assault’, ‘affray’, ‘intimidation’ and ‘damage property’.

The court heard Morris had lashed out at the victim, breaking his glasses, when the commuter tried to come to the aid of his girlfriend during a heated argument on the train.

Morris’ lawyer submitted his client had little recollection of the events of November 13 due to his level of intoxication.

But Magistrate Roger Clisdell said the community was fed up with “drug addicted ratbags” running around causing havoc, determining a “short, sharp spell in custody” was “entirely appropriate to fix his behavioural issues”.

“To say he was out of control would have been putting it mildly,” he said.

“Learn from your time inside and behave like a proper human being, not a ratbag, when you get out,” he said, addressing Morris who sat in the dock.

He was sentenced to five months jail and is eligible for release on parole in February.

Drink driver narrowly avoids jail time after facing court

A South Penrith man has narrowly escaped full-time jail after pleading guilty to drink driving.

Brendan John Clarke, 31, was handed a seven-month suspended sentence last Thursday when he fronted Penrith Local Court.

The court heard the former mechanic

had sought professional help to address his demons, after previously trying and failing to abstain himself.

Magistrate Stephen Corry praised his resolve, but said he hoped it was for the right reasons.

“I hope it’s because you realise you need to, not because the door of a jail is just about to close behind you,” he said.

“Because if you’re doing it for window dressing, you’ll be back.”

He was barred from driving for nine months and ordered to enter into a mandatory interlock order for 24 months.

Three year ban for driver who nearly hit pedestrians

A hoon who nearly ploughed into pedestrians waiting to cross a busy St Marys street has been stripped of his licence for three years.

Cody Glenn Hitch faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with ‘drive manner dangerous’.

The court heard the bricklayer lost control of his car as he sped out of a right hand turn, narrowly avoiding a parked car as he slid across the road.

A scathing Magistrate Stephen Corry said he could have killed a number of innocent bystanders, noting the offence took place at 2.30pm along St Marys’ main street.

“Do you appreciate the danger you put people in?” he questioned.

“And you continued to accelerate across the pedestrian crossing,” he added incredulously.

He was convicted, fined $1,000 and disqualified for the automatic period of three years.

“I see no reason to reduce it,” Magistrate Corry said.

Good behaviour bond for man busted with drugs at festival

A magistrate has unloaded on a reveller busted with drugs at a music festival.

Edwin Bao Xin Ng, 21, fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with

‘possessing a prohibited drug’.

Magistrate Stephen Corry asked him if the entertainment was so pitiful that he needed drugs to cope.

“Well for someone so intelligent, you’re fairly stupid,” he said.

“You would have seen the police there.”

Magistrate Corry said finding himself in custody was not the worst outcome of the offence.

“Having a reaction and dying – that was equally on the cards for you,” he said.

The matter was dismissed on the condition that he enter into a 12-month good behaviour bond.

Disqualified driver busted twice behind the wheel

A magistrate has warned a repeat offender not to “kid” himself about the seriousness of driving while disqualified after he was busted behind the wheel twice in as many weeks.

Magistrate Stephen Corry told Zane Walford people go to jail for continuing to drive while they shouldn’t.

He told the 21-year-old at the rate he was going he would be a senior citizen before he could legally drive again.

Penrith Local Court heard Walford was sprung driving while disqualified twice in nine days, once while reversing his car because it was too close to the driveway.

He was convicted, barred from driving for two years and fined $800.

Uni lecturer fined $600 and ordered off the road

A uni lecturer has been ordered off the road for six months after pleading guilty to mid-range drink driving.

Mohamed Moustakim, 55, was sentenced at Penrith Local Court last Thursday after failing a random breath test.

Magistrate Stephen Corry refused a request to have the UK native conditionally discharged.

“This is an offence that cuts across all stratas of the community,” he said.

He was convicted and fined $600.

Cranebrook: Dirt bike rider faces multiple charges

On Tuesday, December 6 police attended The Northern Road in Cranebrook where they observed a sole rider without lights or registration plates fixed to their motorbike.

The rider stopped on Andrews Road where he was stopped by police while waiting for traffic to pass.

As the police approached, the rider appeared to stall his dirt bike.

He then started the engine again where he thrust forward and collided with the police vehicle.

He was subjected to a breath test which came back positive, and was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station where he was charged with a number of offences.

The 22-year-old Cranebook man is set to attend court on Monday, January 3.

Penrith: Two women arrested after CBD scuffle

Two Toongabbie women were arrested and charged with affray after fighting twice in Penrith.

Police attended Union Lane following calls from the public who witnessed the women fighting.

Members of the public attempted to intervene, at which point the women stopped fighting and walked to Memory Park.

There, witnesses say the women began fighting again.

They were both arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station.

A 21-year-old woman was refused bail and appeared in court on Tuesday.

A 25-year-old woman was granted conditional bail and will appear in court next year.

St Marys: Police investigate cause of house fire

The interior of a house in St Marys was completely destroyed in a fire on Friday, December 9.

Police were called to an address in

Shultz Street where they attended with the NSW Fire Brigade who extinguished the fire.

No persons were home at the time.

It is unknown at this stage how the fire started. Police are urging anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers.

St Marys: Man involved in crash blows high range PCA

A 55-year-old man from Bega has returned a high range PCA following a motor vehicle accident on Schultz Street, St Marys, About 1.15am on Sunday, December 11, police had a conversation with the driver following the accident where he was subjected to a roadside breath test.

It is alleged he returned a positive sample.

The driver was taken to Penrith Police Station where he underwent a breath analysis that returned a positive reading of 0.208.

He was charged with the offence of ‘Drive with high range PCA’ and his licence was suspended.

He will appear at Penrith Local Court next year.

Colyton: Man banned until 2020 busted driving

At about 1.30pm on Friday, December 9, police were patrolling Jensen Street, Colyton.

Police stopped a motor vehicle and had a conversation with the driver, a 21-yearold Colyton man.

Following checks on the licence of the driver, it was revealed that the man was a disqualified driver until 2020.

Further checks on the vehicle revealed it was not registered.

He was charged with ‘Drive motor vehicle during disqualification period’, ‘Use unregistered registrable Class A motor vehicle on road’ and ‘Use uninsured motor vehicle’.

He will appear in Penrith Local Court on Thursday, February 2.

How demerit points work The inevitable holiday season “double demerits” scheme will take effect over the Christmas and New Year period again this year.

Double demerits will apply in NSW from December 23 2016 until January 2 2017 and again from January 25 2017 until January 29 2017.

The double demerit points scheme applies to the following types of offences: • Seatbelt offences • Riding a motorcycle without a helmet • Illegal use of mobile phones • Speeding offences This means that if you are caught committing any of these offences, twice the usual amount of demerit points will apply.

For example, if you hold an unrestricted driver’s licence and you are caught speeding in excess of 10kms per hour over the speed limit, but less than 20kms per hour over the speed limit, you would normally accrue four demerit points.

For this offence, which is one of the most common, you will accrue eight demerit points during the double demerit period.

If you accrue more demerit points than the demerit points threshold for your particular class of licence, you will be issued with a Notice of Suspension and will not be able to drive for a period

Western Sydney Airport

Mixed response as airport is finally JADE ALIPRANDI

estern Sydney’s new airport, to be built at Badgerys Creek, is now clear for take off, bringing to an end decades of speculation about a second airport in Sydney.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Minister for Urban Infrastructure Paul Fletcher released the finalised Western Sydney Airport Plan on Monday, with stage one due to be operational in the mid2020s.

Mr Turnbull’s sign off was the final piece in the airport puzzle.

But despite the jobs and economic growth it will bring, several local Labor Party members have expressed their disappointment in the news.

Councillor Ben Price has called for Penrith City Council to consider withdrawing its support for the airport following the approval.

“We now have the airport approved without at least two of the critical preconditions being met,” he said.

“The curfew is not included in the plans and furthermore Mr Fletcher has advised Council that the airport will operate without a curfew. It doesn’t get much clearer than this.

“We are no closer to getting a north/ south rail line; the State Government can’t

even commit to reserving a rail corridor for the future construction of a line let alone having a fully operational service in place before the opening of the airport.”

Fellow Labor Councillor, Mayor John Thain, was a little more welcoming of Mr Turnbull’s approval.

“The Airport Plan makes it certain that the airport will be built. Now we must focus on how planes will be moved to and from the airport and how noise will be managed,” Cr Thain said.

“This will become clearer in the next phase, through the airspace design process and Council is committed to ensuring our community is not unfairly burdened by the airport’s operation.”

Federal Member for Lindsay, Emma Husar, has labelled the final approval of the Western Sydney Airport Plan a “bitter farce”.

“Malcolm Turnbull and his Liberal Government have failed to be transparent every step of the way and now they’re green-lighting a massive project that has no local jobs plan, no commitment to build rail, no detail on flight paths and noise mitigation, and the necessary site impact tests haven’t even been completed,” she said.

“It’s a bitter farce, and the people of western Sydney have a right to feel conned and cheated by the actions of this Liberal Government.”

“We’re in a situation where this airport is needed – we have got on with the job; the airport plan is approved,” Mr Turnbull said.

“It will become a catalyst for investment and growth... and will transform the economic opportunities in western Sydney.”

Mr Fletcher said the plan is to develop the airport in stages.

Stage one will include a terminal capac-

ity of 10 million passengers five years after opening, equaling the size of Adelaide Airport today.

Demolition work is currently being carried out at the almost 1800-hectare site, which will include a 3700 metre-long runway.

“There is space for a second runway which will be built when the capacity reaches between 35 and 40 million passengers which we anticipate won’t be until 2050,” Mr Fletcher said.

The airport will generate around 9,000 jobs by the early 2030s.

Bomb scare closes streets

How a smoke alarm can save a life

A bomb scare prompted a major police operation in South Penrith last week.

Police were called after the discovery of a number of unattended objects near a power substation on Smith Street.

The operation began shortly after 8am on Thursday, December 8 and concluded just before 3pm with most of Smith Street and parts of Fragar Road closed.

The initial investigation concluded that police were “not able to determine the contents of the objects, however no explosives were detected”.

The suspicious objects were removed and are undergoing forensic investigation.

Police confirmed there is no suggestion of terrorism and it is believed the items had been there for some time before they were reported to police.

“It appears that the items have been thrown over the fence,” a police spokesperson said.

Shortly after 12pm last Thursday most roads had been reopened, however many residents were still anxious and frustrated at the police presence during the operation as they were left completely unaware of what was happening.

While some residents were advised to leave their homes while the operation was ongoing, others were refused access to their vehicles to allow them to leave.

Police apologised for any inconvenience caused to local residents and motorists and thanked them for their understanding.

Caravan fire demonstration shows just how quickly a fire can turn deadly EMILY NEWTON

t takes less than two minutes for a whole caravan to be completely engulfed by flames.

A caravan fire safety demonstration at Londonderry by Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters showed just how swiftly a small fire can turn into an out of control blaze.

“You have just a few seconds to get out of a burning caravan, because they are made of lightweight and highly combustible fittings. Fires can take off frighteningly fast,” Commissioner Greg Mullins warned.

“There are limited escape options from fires in caravans, so the warning a smoke alarm gives can mean the difference between life and death.”

Installing working smoke alarms in caravans and campervans is mandatory under NSW legislation.

Acting Chief Superintendent, Michael Ollerenshaw, said fire safety must always be taken seriously and reminds anyone who doesn’t have a smoke alarm to go out and buy one today.

“Anyone who is fairly handy can install a smoke alarm,” he said.

The story about a zookeeper who punched a kangaroo in the Central West of NSW has gone viral. People are asking why a person so experienced with animals would use violence against one, particularly a member of a native species. Others are worried about the dog who was being held by the kangaroo just before the punch. The man’s employer, Taronga Zoo, said it “strongly opposes the striking of animals and does not support the practice of using dogs to hunt, as this can result in negative welfare for both species”, but has not fired the perpetrator.

How a basketball court is ruining a couple’s life JADE ALIPRANDI

ordan Springs resident Graham Hunt has had enough of the all-hours basketball court that’s been placed outside his bedroom window on Greenwood Parkway for the past nine months.

Mr Hunt and his wife Amanda have written several letters to Penrith Council detailing their frustration at hearing constant thumps at all hours of the day whenever someone is playing the sport.

The couple say not only do people play during the day, they also bring their cars up to the court at night and switch on their headlights to see.

In the several letters sent to Penrith Council, Penrith Mayor John Thain, State Member for Londonderry Prue Car, and representatives from Lendlease, the couple outlined the effect the basketball court has had on their family, including sleep disturbance and possible detriment on the sale of their property.

Mrs Hunt outlined suggestions as a possible way to resolve the issue including, a soundproof wall constructed between the court and the road on Greenwood Parkway; security fencing around the courts so they can be locked; moving the court away from such close proximity to residential

properties; and bollards to prevent cars being driven onto the court.

Mr Hunt told the Weekender it’s incredibly frustrating.

“People are at it all hours of the night and all we hear is thump, thump then bang when the ball hits the backboard,” he said.

“I’ve called the police on multiple occasions but obviously they have better things to do than come and get rid of people playing basketball at 4am.

“There wouldn’t be a problem if it was moved – there’s plenty of park to move it but it doesn’t seem like that’s going to happen.”

A spokesperson for Penrith Council said after discussions with Lendlease, signage will soon be installed at the two pedestrian entry points to the court.

“Lendlease has agreed to install appropriate signage at the two pedestrian entry points to the basketball courts,” the spokesperson said “The signage restricts use of the area after 9pm and will enable security officers, police and rangers to enforce the after hours usage.”

The spokesperson added that Council has also been advised that additional patrols will be undertaken by security employed by Lendlease to deter the public from using the courts after 9pm.

Last year we had thousands of people come down to the picturesque Howell Oval in Penrith to cheer on the Sydney Thunder during the Women’s Big Bash League double header and the atmosphere was incredible. Penrith hosted the very first WBBL match on NSW soil.

Beginning in 1975, Games Day is a celebration of how games bring people together in fun and interesting ways.

Christine Stamatakis, owner of Mega Games on High Street, is passionate about the way board games connect people.

“You don’t need electricity, you just need other people. As a child we grew up playing board games, I’ve played board games with all my children – they’re just a lot of fun,” she said.

“It’s bringing together people. We would get shy people out of their comfort zone come in and they would all talk the same language – board games.”

Mega Games has serviced Penrith for 23 years where it has continually grown to accommodate an increasing desire to play games.

“We started out as a computer store and we saw the value in board games, so we started to add a few games, and eventually the board games took over,” Ms Stamatakis said.

he local community is coming together to remember the life of four-year-old Paige Hart who tragically passed away last week.

Paige was diagnosed with pneumococcal meningitis, and passed away quietly and peacefully in her sleep early in the morning of Tuesday, December 6.

Her parents, Angela and Andrew Hart own the bistro at Grey Gums Hotel in Jamisontown, and the community is being called on to support the family during this sensitive time.

Penrith resident and friend to the family, Pam Discombe, said Paige’s death is a tragedy.

“In the scheme of things it was quite quick,” Ms Discombe said.

“As much as the medical staff tried to help, they weren’t able to help her which is devastating.”

As a member of Running Mums Australia and Penrith Lakes Parkrun, the community was quick to show their support to Angela and the Hart family.

Last Saturday runners and mums across Australia wore pink and ran for Paige to show their support.

“The Parkrun was not just local, it was all of the Parkruns Australia-wide,” Ms Discombe said.

The support has been overwhelming and humbling, something Ms Discombe says has touched her and the entire Hart family.

Last weekend over 100 people booked for dinner at Greygums to show their support of the family.

“I’ve been living in Penrith for nine and a half years, and I can say that this has made me love Penrith in a way that I never did before,” Ms Discombe said.

Paige’s funeral was held on Tuesday, December 13.

Selfless Julie recognised as area’s leading Nanna EMILY NEWTON

hristmas has come early for one deserving Nanna, Julie Albury, who has been recognised for her dedication to the community.

For the past three and a half years she has volunteered for Nepean Food Services with her husband, where her peers nominated her for Westfield Penrith’s Rewarding a Local Nanna competition.

Her calm and cheerful attitude to helping the community through her work at Nepean Food Services is highly valued as she brightens the day of those around her.

“For some of the clients, they don’t see anyone for Christmas, but we get to stop and have a chat with them because after a few years you get to know them quite well.

It’s very rewarding,” Ms Albury said.

“We wanted to find something to do in the community, and do something useful.”

With three grandchildren in England and three in Australia, Ms Albury values the time she can spend with her family at Christmas.

“We like to get together, if not on Christmas Day then either before or afterwards and we will get together so the kids can open their presents and we can all have a

nice meal and a chat and just have some fun time together.

“Although we see them individually, we don’t often see each other together so this time is really special and nice.”

Her energy and laughter is contagious as she smiles through the shops on Wednesday where it comes as no surprise that she chose to spend part of her prize, a $500 Westfield gift voucher, on buying gifts for her family.

Belinda Wilton from Westfield said that Ms Albury’s selfless attitude embodies the Christmas spirit and deserves to be celebrated.

“It’s about celebrating Nannas this year.

They’re who we turn to for advice and love at Christmas, and it was important that we celebrate that,” Ms Wilton said.

“We want to celebrate everything good about Christmas, and that means celebrating people like Julie, we wanted to give back to her like she gives back to the community.”

Ms Albury said if there was any money left over, she might treat herself to a nice top.

“It’s so nice to feel appreciated,” she said.

n my experience there are more poor leaders than wise leaders. But often the actions and decisions that define those poor leaders, are things that could so easily be remedied if they put themselves in another person’s shoes.

Recently I heard about someone who received a bonus from their boss. It was considered a lovely gesture, until they realised that another employee (on the same pay level and same seniority) had received double the bonus she had. The bonus was not linked to a formal performance incentive, nor was there any explanation given to either employee of the reason for the bonuses.

This boss may have had some ‘logical’ reasons for doing this – and when it boils down to it, the boss is entitled to reward whoever she wants, in whatever way she wants.

However, just because you are ‘entitled’ to do something, doesn’t necessarily mean it is a wise decision.

By giving no explanation, the employees in this situation were left to wonder what the meaning was behind the disparity in bonuses.

An action like this has the potential to cause division and create uncertainty.

Wise leaders operate with transparency and honesty, seeking not to manipulate situations, but where possible, to engineer the best outcomes for everyone. It may involve consulting with stakeholders to involve them in the process, and giving people a platform to raise concerns and ideas. This doesn’t mean that employees and stakeholders have to be privy to all the reasons behind your decisions. But it does mean carefully considering how an action might be interpreted.

Every good leader will have to make tough calls and stick by them, despite backlash.

What those affected will remember, is the way you communicated a decision and your willingness to listen to concerns. There will still be employees who dislike decisions, but they will have far more respect for you if you treat them with dignity, and strive to alleviate any negative consequences. Good leaders consider how they would feel if they were in their employees’ situation.

MAYOR’S MESSAGE It’s an honour and a privilege to represent the Penrith community as a Councillor and, since September, as Mayor. Our City keeps going from strength to strength and as we come to the end of 2016, it’s timely to reflect on our highlights and successes.

We held our first major ‘river festival’, welcoming more than 20,000 people to the Real (River, Environment, Art and Lifestyle) Festival on 4-5 November. The event’s success is measured not only by the number of people who attended, but also by how many went out of their way to give positive feedback and say thank you. It was great to see so many people of all ages and backgrounds enjoying themselves by our beautiful Nepean River. It’s safe to say the Real Festival will be back next year.

Our New West initiatives continued to shape our City for the future. Council’s bold vision to reimagine two key City Centre sites is underway – a site on Reserve Street will be transformed into a quality village for older residents, while plans for the second site at Union Road are still being explored and will include an extra 1000 parking spaces.

The Mondo space between the Joan and Westfield Penrith has been transformed into a popular place to meet and relax. Council also launched our free Waste Champion App to help you get the most out of our waste management services.

We continued to advocate on behalf of

our community and welcomed the State Government’s announcement that they will deliver an extra 430 spaces at Penrith Station. Our view is gaining traction that the only way to deliver new jobs, and ensure the airport is a successful economic catalyst, is through a north-south rail link.

The State Government has also started the Nepean River “green bridge”, which will be Australia’s longest shared bridge with 257m path for cyclists and pedestrians when completed in 2018. We also welcomed a $100m commitment to widen Mulgoa Road and $5m in Federal funding for Tench Reserve.

I wish everyone a safe and happy festive season, and look forward to seeing what 2017 brings for us all. I hope to see you at our Australia Day celebrations at Jamison Park and many other community events in the year ahead.

RAIL CHANGES EVERYTHING Council and the community have made a strong case to the State and Federal Governments for a north-south rail link, which will deliver 60,000 jobs.

FLOOD MANAGEMENT WORK ONGOING Council is continuing work on developing Floodplain Risk Management Plans across the City, with six plans currently underway or already completed.

Penrith is dominated by rivers, creeks and waterways, along with wide floodplains, so the risk of flood is real and serious for our region. We are required to address flooding issues by following a process set out under the NSW Government’s Flood Prone Land Policy.

Floodplain Risk Management Plans are being put together first for areas most at risk of flooding. Once all the work has been completed, there will be 24 separate plans.

Each plan is researched and prepared by an independent, expert consultant on Council’s behalf. Preparation of the

plans follows a staged process involving data collection, a Flood Study, a Floodplain Risk Management Study and a Floodplain Risk Management Plan.

Community input and comment is invited at various points as the draft studies and plans are prepared and finalised, before they are adopted at a Council meeting. The experiences and insights of community members are vital to help make sure our flood management plans are as comprehensive and effective as possible.

We welcome and encourage all feedback. Plans open for public exhibition and comment posted on the Have Your Say section of Council’s website home page, and more details on this topic can be found on our Floodplain Management webpage.

Council believes a new outer Western Sydney rail link – connecting the North West and South West growth centres with the proposed Western Sydney Airport - is the best way to boost the economy, create local jobs and reduce travel times for commuters.

North-south rail will shape the future of Penrith, and: • provide a catalyst for employment, innovation and economic growth in the region and deliver 60,000 new and diverse jobs within 30 minutes of home • integrate with current rail plans to form a network supporting the east-west line, with Penrith as the gateway between Sydney and the Central West • reduce our reliance on roads and cars for travelling to work, significantly reducing commute times and improving quality of life, and • create a new, connected growth city (including Penrith, Liverpool, Campbelltown and the proposed Western Sydney Airport).

The Penrith community played an important role in advocating for this essential rail infrastructure. Council staff engaged directly with the community at train stations and via social media, with more than 900 people responding to our campaign.

Penrith Mayor John Thain praised the community response, commending their passion and commitment to the City.

“Together we can shape our future by speaking up,” Cr Thain said.

A final report and recommendation is expected to be completed in early 2017. You can find out more about north-south rail and read Council’s full submission at penrithcity.nsw.gov.au/ northsouthrail.

Council received a commendation at the National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA) Awards on 15 November. The award recognised that Penrith New West is delivering the blueprint for Penrith City Centre and delivering jobs for the future.

Council was also commended at the 2016 Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) NSW Awards on 11 November, in the Public Engagement and Community Planning category, for our Night Time Economy Strategy. Judges applauded the approach by Council’s Place team and consultants Urbis Pty Ltd.

The bold vision to reimagine two key City Centre sites has been successful.

Following an Expression of Interest (EOI) process, a site on Reserve Street will be transformed into a premier aged care facility by award-winning Greengate Development Pty Ltd. This quality development for older residents will be

During the 18-month Penrith Progression process you told us that you wanted a bustling City Centre that’s a pleasure to walk and get around, and to make inner city living a reality. You said you wanted us to adopt innovative ideas, projects and partnerships to help us grow and prosper.

Other highlights for 2016 include:

PENRITH NEW WEST – A PLACE OF LIMITLESS OPPORTUNITY

NEW COMMUNITY PLAN AND DELIVERY PROGRAM With Penrith’s new Councillors in place we are reviewing Council’s priorities to ensure we are on track to deliver what the community needs for the next four years and into the future.

The State Government’s Integrated Planning and Reporting (IP&R) legislation sets out strategic planning and reporting requirements for local councils, including: • Community Engagement Strategy – how we engage with the community.

• Community Strategic Plan – the community’s long term aspirations for the City.

• Resourcing Strategy – our capacity to manage assets and deliver services.

• Delivery Program – a four year work program to help implement the Community Plan.

• Operational Plan – a 12 month program of works.

Our revised Community Engagement Strategy was on public exhibition in November and is ready to be adopted

by Council this December. Over the past 12 months we have been able to connect with people across our diverse community, through various

initiatives and community programs such as the Penrith Community Panel, the Disability Inclusion Action Plan and the Neighbourhood Renewal Program.

Together we have looked at the changing characteristics of our growing population, to better understand what our community wants and needs now, and into the future.

The newly elected Council attended a strategic planning workshop to confirm the overall direction for the City over the next 10 years and look at the specific things Council wants to focus on or improve over their four year term. The Councillors were presented with information received from the community, as well as on future planning at a regional and state level.

We are now in the process of reviewing the outcomes of the Councillors’ strategic planning workshop and will be working with our Councillors and community to develop the 20172021 Delivery Program and 10 year Community Strategic Plan.

The night before your normal collection day, please place all bins at the kerbside.

All trucks will be working to collect bins and collections will run late into the night, so please do not bring your bins in until they have been emptied.

DOWN YOUR WAY Chameleon Reserve Erskine Park is putting on a new face for sporting users, spectators and the community with a new amenity and storage building alongside the existing netball courts.

Resurfacing work has also started, to improve the quality of the netball courts.

Penrith Mayor John Thain said Chameleon Reserve deserved some extra attention, having long served the local community as a recreational area including hosting the Erskine Park Eagles Netball Club for more than 24 years.

Council has also recently completed the installation of a new irrigation system at Howell Oval at a cost of $145,000 with funding contributions from Council ($60,000), NSW State Government’s Building Partnership ($50,000), Cricket NSW ($25,000) and Penrith Grade Cricket Club ($10,000).

A new amenity building has also just been completed at Cranebrook Park.

Funding of $150,000 was provided under the Public Open Space Reinvestment Project, as well as through s94 Development Contributions. The club was successful in attaining a $25,000 grant from the NSW Department of Sport and Recreation.

Penrith City Library’s Spring Membership Drive was a great success. Our “pop up library” sprang up at shopping centres, events and festivals in recent months, giving away library bags, mini pens, frisbees and prizes to anyone who joined the library service during the membership drive.

We joined 1500 new members and re-registered 1900 existing members. We also spread the word about our range of services, from the Toy Library to the Home Library Service, as well as our new library catalogue (Spydus), eBooks and audiobooks (Overdrive) and digital magazines (Zinio).

On Tuesday, June 6 laughter will ring out through The Joan when some of the world’s best funny people join together for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow.

A new adaptation of one of Australia’s most important plays will be running from Friday, June 16 to Saturday, June 17. ‘The 7 Stages of Grieving’ was created 20 years ago by Deborah Mailman and Wesley Enoch. The show invites audiences to join together in the grieving process while exploring the hard truths of Aboriginal history.

If you’re a ‘Downton Abbey’ fan then you’re probably going to love ‘Therese Raquin’. Running from Friday, July 21 to Saturday, July 22, this 150-year-old gothic thriller features murderous star-crossed lovers and plenty of bodice-ripping action.

Add to this the regular Joan series’ including ‘Morning Melodies’, plus another jam-packed six months of the subscription season, and 2017 is set to be another big year for local entertainment.

BOURBON GL AZED HAM Ingredients • 1 cup honey • 1/2 cup molasses • 1/2 cup bourbon (or bourbon essence)

• 1/4 cup orange juice • 2 tbs Dijon mustard • 8 pounds / 3.5kg ham half

Method 1. Microwave honey and molasses in a 1L glass dish for 1 minute. Whisk to blend.

Whisk in bourbon (or bourbon essence), juice, and mustard.

2. Remove skin and fat from ham; place ham in a lightly greased 33cm x 23cm pan.

Make 0.7cm deep cuts in ham in a diamond pattern. Pour glaze over ham.

3. Bake on lower oven rack at 180°C for 2 to 2.5 hours or until a meat thermometer inserted into thickest portion registers 60°C, basting every 15 minutes with glaze.

Since she first appeared on our screens in 2001, Bridget Jones has become one of our favourite romcom characters.

This week she’s back with the release of ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’ on DVD and Blu-ray.

In the third film in the ‘Bridget Jones’ franchise Renee Zellweger reprises her role as unlucky-in-love Bridget, but this time the world’s favourite singleton is about to welcome a new addition to her life.

After Bridget breaks up with Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) she finds herself single once again. To take her mind off things she decides to shift her life’s focus to her friends and her job as a news producer.

But of course things never run

smoothly for Bridget and life takes an unexpected twist when she meets Jack (Patrick Dempsey).

After dalliances with her new flame, and her ex Mark, Bridget falls pregnant and must work out who the father is.

The cast features all the familiar ‘Bridget Jones’ characters including Jim Broadbent as Bridget’s dad and Sally Phillips as Bridget’s long-time friend Sharon.

Reviews for the film have been positive and it appears that the franchise is looking up after a more negative critical response to 2004’s ‘Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason’.

This epic adventure is set in a time of

The film centres around the character of Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) – a Rebellion soldier and criminal – who heads the team responsible for disrupting the Empire’s plans.

There’s a few familiar names in the lineup including James Earl Jones (who plays Darth Vader – one of the most well known voices in movie history), Forest

Whitaker and Australia’s own Ben Mendelsohn.

As with any Star Wars release there’s been much anticipation and speculation around the film – especially considering the film sits outside of the main franchise.

Dogs hate fireworks, but there’s a number of methods you can use to calm their fears as we head into the busy (and noisy) party season...

With Christmas and New Year’s Eve around the corner we thought we would discuss fireworks.

A fear of fireworks is a fairly common phobia in dogs and may also mean that your dog could have other noise phobias.

Dogs often find the unpredictable noise and display of lights very frightening.

Even a dog that is very relaxed and not scared of thunder can become very stressed and scared during fireworks.

Fireworks are closer to the ground than thunder and are accompanied by sudden booms, flashes and burning smells. This can trigger all of a dog’s senses and make them anxious and afraid.

Luckily there are a few things you can do to help keep your dog calm during fireworks.

Prevention is always better than cure.

The best way to prepare your dog for fireworks is to try and make them comfortable with the sound in advance. This is referred to as desensitisation and is very effective although it does take some time and commitment from the owners.

This involves finding a video or recording of fireworks and playing it at the lowest possible volume. While this is happening, give your dog lots of attention and treats so they learn to associate fireworks with a positive experience. A treat should follow each firework sound on the recording, so the sound is the cue for a reward.

Over weeks to months, slowly beginning to raise the volume of the recording.

Repeat this several times a day until your dog can hear the sounds at a high volume without becoming fearful. Also play these sounds at dinner time, so the firework noises will be like a bell ringing for dinner and give a happy/excited emotional response, rather than fear.

If your pet has already developed anxiety, then the use of medication to help them cope with their firework phobia is also beneficial.

For long term success, medications should be used in conjunction with desensitisation.

Medications alone rarely “fix” the fear. Your veterinarian can prescribe anti-anxiety and sedative medication to help keep your pet calm.

These medications need to be used at least 1-2 hours before the fireworks are expected.

As with many medications, the doses can vary so it is important to have a ‘trial run’ with the medications well before fireworks occur to find a dose that is suitable for your pet.

Most of me loves summer, especially the beginning of summer.

Hot weather, the countdown to the end of the school year and Christmas, decorations in all the stores and lovely fresh fruit in season. Everything seems vibrant, exciting and alive.

But part of me hates summer. Especially last summer, when drowning deaths across Australia increased by 16 per cent on the previous year, with the first six weeks of summer seeing 59 drownings and 66 near drownings.

At a time when most of us are celebrating, I can’t help but reflect on the senseless loss of life, the families of those drowning victims, and the pain they have gone through.

December is a particularly dangerous month. We are all busy, rushed and stressed, jugging multiple Christmas parties and commitments, shopping, and getting ready for the big day. This is particularly true for parents of small children, as we all want to make our child’s Christmases magical and perfect.

However, when it comes to water safety, we just can’t afford to get distracted by all the extra noise and tasks that surround us at this time of year.

We must remind ourselves to always put safety first. This means no online shopping on the mobile or checking out all the beautiful Christmas decorating ideas on Instagram while supervising the children swimming in the pool. This means ignoring the arrival of a package at the front door while bathing the kids. It means having a designated adult pool supervisor at every backyard BBQ or pool party, and emptying ice buckets and eskys when the

ice has melted. It means avoiding alcohol when swimming, and when responsible for children swimming. It means fencing inflatable pools that are dragged out of storage as the weather warms up.

It also may be tempting to put the children’s activities on hold to save time and money in the busy lead up to Christmas, but consistency is hugely important for children when learning to swim, so please prioritise your child’s swimming lesson no matter what else is going on.

In the grand scheme of things, it could be the most important half hour of your week.

Kim: Thanks Alyce! Well I’m an aspiring celebrity stylist from Perth. I’m currently studying the fashion business to gain some knowledge about how to market and brand myself.

Alyce: Your sense of style is really inspiring, where do you see yourself fitting in the fashion industry, what are your goals?

Kim: Wow thank you I appreciate that!

I want to style celebrities and models because I feel that I can completely transform their image. My main goal is to make someone feel amazing in their own skin which I do through style. I also would love to get into creative directing editorial photoshoots and movie costumes.

Alyce: Can you describe your style in three words?

Kim: Bold, experimental and classic.

Alyce: Who are your biggest fashion icons/influencers?

Kim: Rihanna, Aaliyah and my mother in the 90’s.

Alyce: How do you stay up to date with current fashion trends in such a busy, fast paced world?

Kim: I like to look through the most recent runway collections on Vogue but I also pay close attention to creative people on Twitter and Instagram.

Alyce: Are there any trends right now we should be trying?

Kim: I definitely recommend trying the lace up trend! There’s so many skirts and pants with lacing detail that makes such a big statement in any outfit. PVC jackets and trench coats for the coming winter are also a must.

Alyce: What are your fashion tips for this upcoming party season?

Kim: Lace detail dresses are a must along with a leather look mini skirt! These can be dressed up with pumps or lace detailed sandals. It’s such a simple yet easy statement to rock.

Alyce: How do you put together a perfect outfit?

Kim: I like to start with the basics and then make a statement with accessories or shoes! I encourage clients to buy things that they think they’d never usually wear because it forces them to style it and make it work for them. It’s all about risk taking!

Pineapple and Cucumber Salad Serves 4

• 1 golden pineapple • 2 Lebanese (short) cucumbers • 80ml (2½ fl oz/L cup) white wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar • 2 tablespoons sugar • ½ teaspoon sea salt • 1 fresh bird’s eye chilli, thinly sliced (optional) • handful of coriander (cilantro) leaves, coarsely chopped, plus extra sprigs to garnish (optional) Less of a salad and more of a palate cleanser, you can serve this with almost any curry or rich dish. The trick here is to achieve a nice balance of salty, sweet and sour, with

a hint of chilli, if desired.

1. Cut off a generous slice from the top and bottom of the pineapple. Stand the pineapple upright, then work your way around, carefully cutting off the skin. Like the top and the bottom, the core can be very woody, so it’s best to remove it. Cut the rest of the pineapple (the sweetest and juiciest part) into rough 1cm dice.

2. Peel the skin off the cucumbers and cut them in half lengthways. Scoop out the seeds with a teaspoon or cut them out with a small, sharp knife. Cut the re-

maining flesh into cubes a similar size to the pineapple.

3. Put the pineapple, cucumber, vinegar, sugar and salt in a medium bowl, add the chilli and coriander and mix well with your hands. Taste to make sure you have a balance of sweet, sour and salty – adjust the flavours if necessary.

4. Serve at room temperature, garnished with coriander sprigs, if you like. If you’re making this ahead of time in warm weather, store it in the fridge until needed, then bring it back to room temperature to serve.

And in anticipation of the big day ourselves we started the month with a bit of early shelf-gazing, inspired by the fact we plan to offer a different wine to suit each course come Christmas Day, rather than just one white or one red to see through the whole meal.

We also set a price target of “$10 or so” for each choice to see if we could contain costs without sacrificing quality and flavour. And remarkably we came home within budget, and more than impressed with our purchases.

And if you too are looking to offer a different wine appropriate to each course this Christmas, and not break the bank doing so, here’s what we chose in our test run.

For welcome drinks as guests arrive, bubbly is an obvious. We opted for Yellowglen’s special Festive Season “Yellow Glitter Pack,” a nice crisp, elegant and dry fizz that bursts with melon, pineapple and citrus flavours.

If seafood’s your option this Christmas, at just $10 is McGuigan Wines’ Black Label 2016 Chardonnay. With Hunter Valley master, Neil McGuigan behind this one it’s an ideal match with seafood.

And for traditionalists for whom turkey is the only option on Christmas Day, from the Riverina comes a 2016 Shiraz under the renowned Calabria Family Richland label (pictured). A recommended $11, this one’s full of varietal fruit and spicy black pepper flavours that go so well with that turkey, baked veggies and gravy.

he race to decide Australia’s bestselling car for 2016 is too close to call with two Toyota vehicles, HiLux and Corolla, separated by a razor-thin margin at the head of the field.

With less than a month to go, the popular HiLux workhorse has built a narrow lead of just 615 sales after it topped the national sales charts in November.

As well as being in the box seat for the number one car, Toyota is also guaranteed to be the top-selling automotive brand in Australia for the 14th year in a row.

enrith-born Paralympic champion James Turner has been named the Paralympic Rookie of the Year at the Australian Paralympic

Awards.

Also nominated for the Male Paralympian of the Year award, Turner exceeded all expectations at his first Paralympic Games when he surged to Paralympic gold in the 800m T36 event for athletes with neurological conditions.

With a time of 2:02.39, the 20-year-old blew away his rivals on the final night of athletics competition, leading dual

800m world champion Paul Blake by 7.26 seconds and shaving nearly three seconds off the world record.

Australian Paralympic Committee Chief Executive, Lynne Anderson, congratulated Turner on his award and achievements in Rio. “I think I can speak for the whole of Australia when I say that James’ performance in the 800m was one of the most memorable of the Australian Paralympic Team’s Rio campaign,” she said.

“His determination to succeed, even with an unassailable lead, was incredibly inspiring and exciting to watch.

“With a perfect Paralympic Games debut, it only makes sense that James be

named Rookie of the Year.”

Turner said winning the Rookie of the Year award was the icing on the cake of what has been a whirlwind 2016.

“I was really surprised to win as I was up against some really good athletes for that award and a number of us could have got it,” he told the Weekender.

“It’s been a big year, so much has gone on. I only started trying to qualify for the Paralympics last year, and to win it was absolutely amazing.”

Turner, who has been in and out of athletics since he was a youngster, credited his coach for making him the best athlete he can be.

“With the help of my coach I have

improved so much in such a short amount of time,” he said.

“I was certainly going for the world record in Rio because earlier in the season I unofficially broke the record at a small meet in Mooloolaba. I knew I could run even faster with more training under my belt.”

After a jam-packed year full of highs, Turner isn’t planning to unwind at Christmas, with training already underway for the World Championships next July.

“I’m training harder than I ever have before because I’m looking to race in the 400m as well as the 800m at the World Championships in London next year,” he revealed.

Wanderers looking to bounce back

Whare focuses on leaving injury curse behind him as he looks to cement position in centres NATHAN TAYLOR

ith rumours suggesting a pre-season switch to former club Manly behind him, Panthers centre Dean Whare is fully focused on getting back onto the field after a horror two years of injuries.

The 26-year-old former Kiwi international has played just 14 games for Penrith since 2015 after a host of terrible injuries to his hamstring, calf and knee.

Last season Whare only managed one game for the Panthers after he tore his ACL during a routine training session.

At the time, he was already recovering from two troublesome calf tears that kept him sidelined for all but one game of the first two months of the 2016 season.

Opening up to the Weekender, Whare said it’s been an agonising couple of years.

“It’s been tough being injured so many times with various issues,” he said.

“When I did my knee at training it was pretty random and very unlucky. As soon as I knew I wouldn’t be back for the rest of the year, I switched off completely and turned into a fan.

“I enjoyed watching the boys do so well and I tried to help out as much as I could.”

“I tried taking all the positives out of a bad situation.”

On his long road to recovery, Whare was met with a number of familiar faces, who also suffered a similar fate.

Whare said being around people with the same injury helped ease the pain.

“For myself it was good having others in rehab at the same time with the same injury,” he said.

“We had Peta Hiku, Will Smith and Sam McKendry all do their ACL during the season, so it was a pretty solid crew in rehab.

“It normally gets lonely by yourself but we had a good bunch there with all the same injury – we helped each other through the process.”

During the recent off-season Penrith lost yet another high profile star to a dreaded ACL injury with Origin flyer Josh Mansour ruled out for at least six months.

Whare said he’s been in constant contact with Mansour and is helping him deal with his recovery.

“As soon as Josh landed he gave me a buzz straight away,” Whare recalled.

“I went through the process of my injury and how well my recovery has been.”

Whare is set to be fit for round one.

“Everyone changes their minds every week. Berisha is a top player, always has been and always will be.”

For Popovic’s men, it was the second time in less than a month that they’ve suffered defeat at the hands of Melbourne 3-0.

“It was a repeat of last time,” Popovic stated.

“We can’t really ask too much more from the players, they keep getting better every week but today we didn’t get the result.

“The chances Melbourne had they scored and we got punished.”

Western Sydney arrived in New Zealand this week to battle the eighthplaced Wellington Phoenix on Saturday afternoon.

The Wanderers are currently clinging onto sixth spot on the ladder, having recorded just two wins from 10 matches so far this season.

After last week’s debacle at home, the Wanderers will be hoping for better luck across the ditch.

“Wellington are always tough,” Wanderers captain, Dimas Delgado said.

“They have good players but if we play harder and keep doing our things right, we are quietly confident of a win.”

This Saturday’s match will be shown live on FOX Sports at 5.35pm.

Last week the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) released the first findings of the most comprehensive national population tracking survey into sport and physical activity in Australia.

The AusPlay survey provides the sport

sector with vital insights into participation for adults and children, the barriers to physical activity and inform strategy.

ASC Chair John Wylie said it was the first time AusPlay collected adults’ and children’s sport and physical recreation participation data.

“Football is such a fun sport, I’ve been playing for six years and love it,” he said.

“I think more people should play because it’s so fun and you get really fit.”

One person who was surprised his sport was so high up the rankings was golfer Noel Rowsell.

The local sports photographer, who has been playing Golf for most of his life, believes one of the reasons his sport is so well participated in is because it appeals to people of all ages.

“I honestly thought Golf would be listed at nine or 10, I’m quite surprised it’s second,” Rowsell admitted.

“I think Golf is a sport for young and old and you can get plenty of exercise walking

Footy club takes Giant leap forward Female participation in Aussie Rules on the rise as local club introduces new all-girl teams NATHAN TAYLOR

ot too long ago dancing and netball were the only sporting options for young girls to get fit and have fun, but these days more and more are looking for variety.

One sport that’s becoming increasingly popular among local girls is Aussie Rules.

Two years ago, local junior Aussie Rules club, the Penrith Giants, had no all-female teams at the club – next season they’ll boast two.

While girls have always been welcome to participate in mixed junior teams into their mid-teens at the club, they haven’t been allowed to play with just each other until this year.

Penrith Giants President Ronan McNally said girls have always been an important part of his club.

“Girls consistently make up about 25 per cent of Auskickers (four to eight-yearolds), who then progress into our mixed junior footy teams from U9 to U12s,” he said.

“Once they got older they generally tended to drift away because, in the past, there was no real pathway for females participating in our club.”

Female participation is on the rise at the Penrith Giants Aussie Rules club 2016 was a year of change at the Giants, with club officials finally creating a pathway for female participation at the club.

A new competition was formed in western Sydney – an U15 girls-only league – and the decision was made to nominate a team from Penrith.

“As the club and AFL worked hard together to market this new opportunity of female participation, it became very clear the correct decision was made with

19 girls registering in the inaugural Penrith Giants Youth Girls team,” McNally said.

“The girls went on to have a very successful inaugural season and became significantly stronger as the year progressed, winning several games.”

2017 is expected to be even stronger for female participation at the Giants, with an U12s team to be added into the competition.

A local U18s girls team, featuring players

from a number of nearby clubs, is also expected to be formed.

“Registrations have been strong already, and we have 16 girls registered for 2017 so far,” McNally said.

“The feedback we receive is that girls love being involved in AFL because of the excitement of the game and the skills required to play. Girls love coming down to training and they find the sport a fantastic way to get and stay fit.”

CRICKET: A Christmas miracle took place at Howell Oval last weekend with Penrith snapping a three game losing streak with an emphatic win over second-placed Gordon in Round 7 of the NSW Premier Cricket competition.

Playing in a two day match, Gordon were dismissed for 265 on Day 1. Josh Lalor was the hero for the home side taking 5/57.

When Penrith hit the crease on Day 2 last Saturday, they reached Gordon’s target with ease, scoring 3/266.

Best with the bat for Penrith was Tom Kohler-Cadmore (101) and Jonathon Sammut (100) who each scored centuries.

Penrith will take on Bankstown in a One Day match this Saturday morning at Jensen Park.

BASEBALL: The Penrith Panthers first grade side have enjoyed mixed results against the Vikings during Round 13 of the NSW State Baseball League.

In the mid-week game last Wednesday night, the Vikings narrowly defeated Penrith 5-3, while last Sunday afternoon Penrith hit back with a 5-2 win.

Penrith will take on Ryde in Round 14.

BASKETBALL: Registrations are now open for the Penrith Basketball Association’s January Holiday Camps. The local association will be running a full day ROAR Camp and

Club Camp for their experienced club players.

These camps will be a great way to get fit, refine and learn new skills before competition goes back with their fun, experienced and friendly club coaches.
