L

ucinda King’s family should have been finalising her Christmas presents this weekend.

Instead, they’re left with the devastating task of arranging her funeral.

The beautiful 10- year- old was tragically hit and killed by a truck on Monday afternoon at Cambridge Gardens in an accident that has rocked the community.

The parents of Lucinda, who was riding a

scooter when she was hit at the intersection of Boomerang Place and Richmond Road, rushed to the scene – breaking down as they learned she couldn’t be saved.

“The poor little girl was still out on the road

and was covered with a green cloth while her family were sitting to the side of the road, hugging each other,” a witness said.

Council rejects latest proposal for Wallacia Country Club, potentially ending saga ALENA HIGGINS

T

he campaign to save Wallacia Country Club from morphing into a cemetery has received a major win, with Penrith Council recommending the latest proposal be refused.

While the Sydney Western City Planning Panel (SWCPP) will have the final say when it meets to determine the matter next week, those crusading against the development hope it is the final nail in the coffin for the long-running saga.

Wallacia resident and Penrith Councillor Ross Fowler welcomed the recommendation, saying the Development Application (DA) “just didn’t stack up for a number of reasons”.

“It’s a decision that recognises the importance of Wallacia, the importance of the Mulgoa Valley and the heritage values that are within that area,” he said.

“It’s certainly a decision that is well supported within the community and within the golfing fraternity.”

Submitted in December 2019 by the Catholic Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (CMCT), the $25 million DA proposes to slash the 18- hole course to nine to make way for 27,000 burial plots, a chapel and administration buildings.

Cemetery plan’s fatal blow

A long-running campaign has fought against the development of a new cemetery at Wallacia.

Sweeteners, including alterations and additions to the existing clubhouse are also slated, as are a new bowling green, pool and gym.

CMCT’s original plan for the site, which included up to 88,000 burial plots, was knocked back by the Independent Planning Commission and is currently subject to an appeal.

In its lengthy assessment report, Council

points to multiple areas where the DA is unsatisfactory or inconsistent with environmental and local planning controls.

“In its current form, the proposal will result in negative and unsupportive impacts on the significance and contributory values of nearby and adjacent heritage items and conservation areas, and on surrounding scenic and landscape values and the character of the area,” it states.

Mr Fowler said it is now up to the SWCPP to either accept the recommendation, defer consideration or change the recommendation.

“There’s no way they’ll change the recommendation,” he said.

“They might defer it, generally I think they’ll probably accept it.”

CMCT said it was looking forward to the SWCPP meeting next week.

Handing out the Woke Awards T he end of the year is almost here and that means it’s time for annual awards and lists, and plenty of them. We’re about to be dominated by “top five [insert subject here] of 2020” articles over the next month, and I’m kicking things off with a brand new annual event – the Woke Awards.

2020 saw the ‘cancel culture’ reach all new heights, and it’d be wrong not to honour it in all its woke glory.

Let’s count ’em down . . .

5. Oscars no longer about movies The Academy Awards come in at fifth spot after the decision to implement diversity rules, which means a film is no longer purely judged on its . . . well . . . quality as a film.

The rules are pretty long-winded but in short, films must ensure at least one of the lead actors or significant supporting actors is from an underrepresented racial or ethnic group, or at least 30 per cent of the general ensemble cast is.

Crew and technical roles also have quotas that need to be reached, while movies must also ensure there’s ‘industry access opportunities’ such as paid internships or training programs.

Even the marketing and PR teams of films fall into the new rules.

In short if you tick the right boxes you’re now a better chance to win an Oscar. We’ll worry about the quality of the movie once the correct forms have been filled out.

Without question we need more diversity in the film industry, but I’m not sure the ethnicity of the marketing manager should come into the award process. It’s a cheap stunt with no winners.

And so Saputo did just that, banishing the brand from the shelves and sending customers elsewhere while they scratch their heads trying to come up with a name that doesn’t offend anyone.

Lucinda King’s tragic final moments: Family left distraught just before Christmas

W

itnesses have described the distressing scenes in the moments after a tragic accident on Monday afternoon in which a 10-yearold girl was killed.

Lucinda King, a student at Werrington Public School, was hit and killed by a truck at the intersection of Boomerang Place and Richmond Road.

“There were emergency services everywhere and I saw the driver of the truck sitting inside an ambulance talking to police and he looked quite upset,” said April Williams, who witnessed the tragic aftermath of the incident.

“The poor little girl was still out on the road and was covered with a green cloth while her family were sitting to the side of the road, hugging each other.”

Lucinda’s family has paid tribute to their “sweet” and “cheeky” little girl, who has been taken from them just weeks before Christmas.

“Lucinda was excited about presents, she wanted a doll, Christmas won’t be right this year, she was the most beautiful soul, full of energy and just a sweet, sweet cheeky child,” her brother Jacob told The Daily Telegraph.

Werrington Public School Principal Christine Avery said extra counsellors were on-site this week to assist students to understand and deal with the tragedy.

“It is with great sadness that I write this post to inform our community that Lucinda King, one of our Year 4 students, tragically passed away in an accident yesterday,” she posted on the school’s Facebook page.

“The thoughts and deepest sympathies of the staff, students and community of Werrington Public School are with Lucinda’s parents, family and friends at this time of sorrow.”

It has been confirmed that a Penrith City Council truck was involved in the accident, with Council saying they are deeply saddened and shocked.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim and those involved and impacted, and we understand that this tragedy will be felt by many in our community and beyond,” a Council spokesperson said.

“We are unable to comment further on the circumstances surrounding the incident due to it being an unfolding Police investigation.”

Witnesses have suggested that the truck had the green light at the intersection in the lead-up to the accident.

Christmas shoppers hit with ‘breach notices’ for not registering their stay ALENA HIGGINS

hristmas shoppers are being warned a popular Penrith CBD car park has become a registered car park after a number of customers were stung with ‘breach notices’.

InterPark confirmed the undercover parking behind Skiptons Arcade transitioned from being a free, unregistered car park to a registered car park about eight weeks ago.

“The owner of the parking site noticed that there were many cars taking advantage of the parking spaces by using them all- day, without necessarily visiting the shopping plaza that it was intended to support,” an spokeswoman for InterPark, which manages the private car park, said.

“The new policy still allows for up to 1.5 hours of free parking upon registering the vehicle, with the option of purchasing additional time if the customer feels that it is necessary.”

However, customers can be slapped with a $65 breach notice – despite not overstaying the free parking period – for simply failing to register their details, which is done by either downloading the ParkMate app or manually entering plate details into the machine next to the TK Maxx

The spokeswoman said InterPark had no plans to install boom gates at the Henry Street entrance to avoid confusion as there was physically no room to do so.

“To help guide customers through this transition, signage was installed prior to the change in parking policy and we issued warnings during the first two weeks of the site’s change in parking policy,” she said.

“Since the policy has changed only recently, we are evaluating the efficacy of the signage.”

Daniel McKinnon of Complete Legal and Conveyancing said InterPark was well within its rights to issue breach notices, even for failing to register details.

“People are entitled to derive an income from privately owned property,” he said.

As for enforcement, Mr McKinnon said although it can be “cost prohibitive” to prosecute matters when there is so little money at stake, it does happen.

“If the person refuses to pay the fine the car park owner can sue them for breach of contract – which is how some recalcitrant parkers end up in court,” he said.

It comes after Penrith Westfield dropped its free parking from three to two hours in July unless shoppers download the centre’s free app.

Penrith Council has chipped in $600 to assist English language classes at the Thornton Community Centre.

Councillor Aaron Duke raised the matter as an urgent motion during Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ordinary Meeting last month. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They have been running these classes for a couple of years now and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve self funded them largely through gold coin donations but also our previous support... as well as a community grant,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve asked for a very small contribution of $600 which will cover one hour of classes per week for 10 months to pay for the centre and to be able to continue that class.â&#x20AC;?

Going digital Two million drivers in New South Wales have now signed up for a Digital Driver Licence (DDL).

Minister for Customer Service Victor Dominello said the DDL is safe, secure and can be used as proof of age and ID at a range of venues and police roadside checks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Two million people (36 per cent of all driver licence holders) canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be wrong.

Drivers simply love the technology, with 95 per cent giving it the thumbs up,â&#x20AC;? Mr Dominello said.

To get a DDL, licence holders will need to create a MyServiceNSW Account at www.service.nsw.gov.au and download the Service NSW mobile app on their smartphone. The digital licence will always be opt-in only.

Strengthening property prices as well as forecasts of more to come next year have yet again proved the resilience of Australian real estate during troubled times, according to the Property Investment Professionals of Australia (PIPA).

The CoreLogic Home Value Index for November showed national dwelling values up 0.8 per cent over the month with every capital city, apart from Melbourne, posting positive results as well as regional areas performing even more strongly.

PIPA Chairman Peter Koulizos said the results were in stark contrast to some of the more alarmist property price forecasts at the start of the pandemic. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Big banks and some property commentators were predicting property price falls of anywhere from 10 to 30 per cent,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At the same time, PIPA produced research to show that house prices had increased by as much as 100 per cent in the five years after the most recent recessions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For some reason â&#x20AC;&#x201C; even though our analysis looked at every downturn or recession over the past 50 years â&#x20AC;&#x201C; plenty of people were still expecting property prices to fall off a cliff this time around.â&#x20AC;?

Fresh look Panthers jerseys revealed

The Penrith Panthers have revealed their 2021 jerseys, with a throwback to the famous 1991 Grand Final strip part of next year’s kit.

The 1991 jersey is officially listed as the club’s ‘alternate’ jersey and is likely to be used on multiple occasions next season.

Next year marks the 30th anniversary of Penrith’s first ever Grand Final victory, a 19- 12 defeat of Canberra at the Sydney Football Stadium.

The club is said to be planning a major celebration to commemorate the anniversary when Penrith and Canberra meet at Panthers Stadium in April next year.

Penrith’s home jersey is a primarily black strip, with traditional red, yellow and green lines across the chest.

A light pink jersey is also part of the 2021 kit and is listed as the club’s ‘away’ jersey.

Halves Jarome Luai and Nathan Cleary along with powerful forward James Fisher- Harris showcased the new jerseys this week.

Fans were given their first glimpse of the strip at 6pm on Wednesday night and there’s expected to be a rush on orders heading into the Christmas season.

estern Sydney Airport is exceeding its local employment target, with 54 per cent of the workforce building Sydney’s new airport coming from the local community.

Revealing the figure at a western Sydney- focused infrastructure conference on Wednesday, Western Sydney Airport Chief Executive Officer Simon Hickey said more than half of the airport team are from western Sydney, almost double the construction phase target of 30 per cent.

“Western Sydney International Airport is being built to be a catalyst for jobs and opportunities in Sydney’s west, so we’re proud that just over two years into the seven-year build, more than half of the team are local,” Mr Hickey said.

Mr Hickey said the project was still in the earthwork phase, moving around 25 million cubic metres of earth to prepare the site for terminal, runway and other civil infrastructure construction, including internal roads, utilities and supporting buildings.

“With terminal construction due to start by the start of 2022 and the runway soon after, in around two years we’ll be at peak construction, with thousands of

people working directly on the site,” he said.

“The flow-on benefits mean that more jobs will be created so that businesses of all sizes, including small to medium local businesses, can service and supply this massive project.

“Once the airport is operating, it will mean jobs of all kinds from ground crew, customer service and retail, as well as jobs at the myriad of employers in the on-airport business park and cargo facility.

“It’s an exciting time for western Sydney and it’s great that the airport will be an important part of its growth.”

Mr Hickey said that on top of jobs at the airport itself, it will be a catalyst for higher quality employment locally in western Sydney, meaning fewer people will have to sacrifice three hours a day commuting to work in the east.

“The generational impact Western Sydney International Airport will have on this region is yet to be fully realised,” he said.

Work to build Western Sydney International is on schedule for the airport to open to international and domestic passenger and air cargo services in late 2026.

School set for upgrade Cranebrook High School proposes $3 million overhaul to cater for more students ALENA HIGGINS

pgrades to Cranebrook High School are on the cards in a bid to accommodate more students and

staff.

The Department of Education recently lodged a Development Application (DA) seeking approval for three new general learning areas, a new covered walkway and covered outdoor learning area (COLA).

As part of the $3 million upgrade, alterations to the existing art workshop will be undertaken, while a new covered walkway through the existing Building D will be built.

A single level building containing three new learning spaces, as well as a seminar room, shared learning space and communications room, will also be constructed on vacant land behind Building D. According to the DA, the school has been singled out due to a need for increased capacity.

“The increased school population is a reflection of increased residential densities and population in the school catchment,” the Statement of Environmental Effects reads.

“Therefore, the school has been identified as requiring upgrades to accommo-

If approved, the proposal will allow for an additional 75 students, taking the total school population to 939.

The staff headcount will also swing upwards, with an additional seven staff proposed to support the growth of the school.

No change to the main vehicular access from Hosking Street is proposed and no additional parking is slated as part of the application, however 20 bicycle parking spaces have been included in the DA. The maintenance access driveway located on the southern side of the school will be altered to facilitate the new building works and six trees will be required to be removed.

According to the accompanying Traffic Impact Assessment, Hosking Street provides approximately 108 pick- up and drop-off spaces and the increased student population can be easily accommodated within this area.

The existing car park at the school is also able to meet the increased parking demand for 89 staff, the Traffic Impact Assessment concludes.

Penrith Council will determine the DA, with the applicant saying the proposal is expected to result in “positive social impacts”.

“It will improve teaching facilities at the school with state-of-the-art contemporary learning environments thereby enhancing the educational infrastructure available to families in the area,” supporting documents state.

Cranebrook High School first opened in 1989.

Man who can’t learn from his past to stay behind bars

Anthony Charles Morgan will spend Christmas behind bars after his bid for freedom, while he awaits his severity appeal, was rejected.

Morgan appeared before Penrith Local Court via video link on Tuesday after being jailed for high-range drink driving on Monday.

His lawyer said the 48-year-old had strong ties to the community and the time spent on bail awaiting his appeal would be used to get a Sentencing Assessment Report and also seek his eligibility for an Intensive Correction Order (ICO), otherwise known as a community-based jail sentence.

But Magistrate Brian van Zuylen indicated it wasn’t the risk of him failing to appear that was the main problem before the court.

“It’s the risk of him high-range drink driving and driving while disqualified because he’s done it five times now,” he said.

The court heard Morgan came to the attention of police when his intoxicated passenger was seen with his foot fully extended out the window.

Morgan was subjected to a roadside breath test and returned a reading of 0.216 – more than four times the legal alcohol limit.

Magistrate van Zuylen noted Morgan had racked up one mid-range, two highrange and one ‘driving under the influence of alcohol of other drugs’ offences since 1989.

“Three times he’s received alternatives to prison,” he said, referring to periodic detection, a suspended jail sentence and most recently an ICO. “And he’s doing it again.”

He took into account his lengthy criminal history and likelihood of a custodial sentence before refusing bail.

His appeal is expected to be heard at Penrith District Court early in the new year.

A man who sent 229 abusive texts to his then partner after a male answered her phone late at night has avoided a criminal conviction.

In the barrage of texts the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, called the woman a “f**king dirty fat c**t” and said he hoped she got raped and was “left to die”, Penrith Local Court heard on Tuesday.

The court heard the man, a truck driver, also sent 50 emails to the woman and contacted her son and daughter following the incident.

When asked why he sent such “appalling texts”, the offender said another man was involved and he was “very, very upset”.

“The relationship was still current and I called and a male answered saying ‘f**k off, they’re busy’,” he said.

The man claimed it was in the “heat of the moment”, but Magistrate Brian van Zuylen refuted this.

“No, it wasn’t the heat of the moment,” he said.

“It wasn’t just one text.”

Magistrate van Zuylen took into account the man pleaded guilty straight away and had never been in trouble with the criminal justice system before.

He handed him a Conditional Release Order without conviction for 18 months, telling the man his clean record “saved” him from heavier penalties.

He is also subject to an AVO not to approach the woman at her Penrith address or anywhere she works.

Man says he used marijuana to help handle back pain

A North St Marys man busted cultivating a prohibited plant has been slapped with an $800 fine.

Mark Allan Maissin faced Penrith Local Court on Tuesday and told the court he had suffered from chronic back pain for 20 years.

“I use marijuana to help suppress the pain,” he said.

However, Magistrate Geoff Hiatt said it was not a lawful drug or a lawful excuse.

“It’s still an offence,” he said.

Maissin told the court he was scheduled to have surgery on his back next year and was also investigating medical marijuana.

“You need to explore those types of avenues... instead of committing criminal offences,” Magistrate Hiatt said.

Magistrate Hiatt noted police spotted the pot plant containing four small cannabis plants when they attended Maissin’s house on a separate matter.

The court heard he made full admissions to seeding and watering the plants regularly.

He was convicted and fined $800.

Naughty driver facing prison time if he gets behind wheel

Lee Graham Antonialli has been warned he is at a “cross roads” after he was caught driving while disqualified at Cambridge Park less than a month after being convicted of the same offence.

An unrepresented Antonialli appeared before Penrith Local Court on Tuesday and sought a two-week adjournment to get “a couple of references”.

But Magistrate Geoff Hiatt said that wouldn’t assist him, preferring to deal with the matter then and there.

“You obviously want to go to jail,” he said, to which Antonialli admitted getting behind the wheel was a “stupid” mistake.

“Lots of stupid people go to jail,” Magistrate Hiatt said matter-of-factly.

“You’re not going to be able to help your partner if you go to jail,” he added, after Antonialli indicated he was his partner’s carer.

Magistrate Hiatt noted there were a number of offences of a similar nature on his record, indicating that Antonialli was at a “cross roads” in terms of jail after continuing to “thumb his nose” at court orders.

He was particularly critical of the latest

offence, pointing out Antonialli was only dealt with on October 9 and was detected behind the wheel again within the space of just 18 days.

“I’ll never get behind the wheel again,” Antonialli promised.

But Magistrate Hiatt wasn’t convinced by the commitment.

“If I had a dollar for every time I heard that, Mr Antonialli, I’d be a very rich man,” Magistrate Hiatt retorted.

Magistrate Hiatt warned him if he came before the court again for a similar offence, the court would actively consider a jail sentence.

He was convicted, fined $1,000 and banned from driving for a further 12 months.

Man promises to pay for damaged property

A man who damaged a telephone and television has dodged a criminal conviction.

Matthew James Simpson faced Penrith Local Court on Tuesday charged with two counts of ‘damage property’.

“I’m sorry Your Honour, I shouldn’t have done what I done,” he said, adding he “just snapped”.

Magistrate Brian van Zuylen noted he had promised to replace the damaged goods but that he was currently unemployed.

“Phones and TVs can be expensive, and if people are on Centrelink benefits it’s a lot of money to replace it,” he said, adding he should have thought of that before he lashed out.

He took into account Simpson had no convictions as an adult before handing down his decision.

He was handed a Conditional Release Order without conviction for 12 months.

Cambridge Park: Man faces court after tip-off from Interpol

A man faced court this week after being charged over alleged threatening content posted online and the possession of replica assault rifles.

On Tuesday, November 10 the NSW Police Force received information from Interpol in relation to concerning online content, which was believed to have been posted by a person in NSW. About 11am that day, officers from Nepean Police Area Command attended a home at Cambridge Park, and spoke with the 31-year-old male resident.

During a search of the man’s home, police seized two AR-15 gel-blasters with ammunition and a mobile phone, which will undergo forensic examination.

The man was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station, where he was charged with four counts of ‘use carriage service to menace, harass or cause offense’, and two counts of ‘possess unauthorised prohibited firearm’.

Anyone with information about extremist activity or possible threats to the community should come forward, no matter how small or insignificant you may think the information may be. The National Security Hotline is 1800 123 400.

Penrith: Man chooses bad place to relieve himself

Police returning from attending a job on High Street in Penrith were shocked when they spotted a man urinating on the wall of Penrith Police Station.

The incident happened on Monday, December 7 about 1pm. Police approached the 23-year-old Penrith man, who at the time was in company of his three-yearold daughter.

The man was spoken to in relation to urinating on the wall and was subsequently searched. It is alleged located in the man’s backpack was a resealable plastic bag containing cannabis.

The man was arrested and taken into the Police Station. The young child was

looked after by staff until the arrival of the child’s grandparents.

The man was charged with ‘Possess prohibited drug’. He will appear in Penrith Local Court on March 3. A notification was also made to Family and Community Services.

Glenmore Park: Woman blows over limit after accident

About 8.15pm on Sunday, December 6, police were called to a single vehicle accident on the Glenmore Parkway, Glenmore Park.

Police spoke with the driver, a 39-yearold Glenmore Park woman. The woman was breath tested, which proved positive.

The woman was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station, where she underwent a breath analysis, that returned a positive reading of 0.111.

The woman was charged and her license was suspended on the spot. She will appear in Penrith Local Court on January 23.

Oxley Park: Man busted with marijuana plants at his home

Police have busted a man for growing marijuana after attending his property on an unrelated matter.

About 2.00pm on Wednesday, December 2, police attended a residential address on Constance Avenue, Oxley Park and noticed five pots, containing five plants located near the front door of the location.

Police will allege that the plants were in fact, marijuana plants. Police have spoken to the occupant, a 46-year-old man. It is alleged the man had admitted to watering and tending to the plants every day.

Police seized the plants and obtained consent to search the residence for any more marijuana plants. It is alleged the man has shown police a sixth plant located in the rear yard. The man was charged with ‘cultivate prohibited plant – small quantity’.

He will appear in Penrith Local Court on January 23.

The discharging of juries Another high profile criminal law case has resolved in a jury being discharged in NSW this week.

A few short months ago the jury in the trial of 22-year-old Sydney swim instructor Kyle Daniels, who is accused of inappropriately touching young female swim students, was discharged

by District Court Judge Kara Shead on the second day of trial. In that case, it was not disclosed as to why the jury was discharged.

Last week we saw the NRL Jack De Belin rape trial saga roll on, with the jury unable to reach a unanimous verdict following the completion of the trial – accordingly the Judge discharged the jury and the De Belin will face a fresh trial with a new jury in April 2021.

Former rugby league superstar Jarryd Hayne suffered a similar fate in his sexual assault trial this week, with the jury failing to arrive at a unanimous verdict and Hayne being discharged as a result. Hayne is accused of performing oral sex on the alleged victim without consent, resulting in an injury to the woman in question.

Juries in NSW can only be discharged in unique circumstances. These circumstances include: • A juror was mistakenly or irregularly impanelled.

• A juror has become excluded from jury service.

• A juror has engaged in misconduct in relation to the trial or coronial inquest.

• In relation to individual jurors, a juror becoming ill or incapacitated.

• A juror being unable to give impartial consideration to a case because

Either the prosecution or the defence can apply for the discharge of a juror or the discharge of the jury as a whole, as has occurred in the above cases.

The most common reason that entire juries are discharged is where they cannot agree upon a unanimous verdict.

Usually this comes after many hours or days of deliberation, following which the jury communicates to the Judge that a unanimous verdict cannot be reached.

The Judge may then give some direction and/or advice as to how further deliberations might assist the jury to arrive at a unanimous verdict, however if they fail to do so the Judge has no choice but to discharge them.

The ball is essentially then in the prosecution’s court. If the prosecution does not consider that a further trial will assist to resolve the matter it can discontinue the proceedings. More often than not however an Order will be made for a re-trial, whereby the entire process will start from scratch.

Generally, if there has been two trials and two juries have been unable to reach a verdict, it is only in exceptional circumstances that a third re-trial will occur. Generally speaking, the verdict of a jury in NSW needs to be unanimous.

Scorching temperatures in Penrith can have huge impact on your health EMILY FESZCZUK

ummer is officially here, and the warm weather has well and truly begun.

With more scorching days set to come, experts are reminding locals to think of the impact extreme heat can have on their health.

Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Director of Public Health, Doctor Victor Carey said planning ahead when hot days are forecast is the key to keeping cool and staying healthy.

“Checking the daily weather and seeking out shade, finding shelter in airconditioned places or sitting yourself near an electric fan can all help,” Dr Carey said.

“Closing windows, doors, curtains and blinds at home during the day and opening them in the cool of the night can keep your home a little cooler.”

During extremely hot weather, the risk of becoming dehydrated or your body overheating increases.

Dr Carey said exposure to high temperatures can lead to life- threatening heatrelated illness such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

He says resisting the temptation of a soft drink or cold beer is important.

“People need to keep up their fluids by drinking plenty of water and avoiding alcoholic, sugary and caffeinated drinks,” he said.

“Reducing physical activity during the heat of the day is another thing you can do to stay healthy in the heat and out of your local emergency department.”

Heat can also make existing chronic illness worse and this can have equally serious consequences such as inducing a heart attack in someone who has a heart condition.

With heat affecting everyone differently and some people being at greater risk than others, Dr Carey said he encourages everyone to check on the welfare of others on hotter days.

“Pregnant women, those who are overweight, babies and young children, people with a chronic health condition and the elderly are more susceptible to heat related illness,” he said.

“Please regularly check in on your family, friends or relatives who may be vulnerable or who are already unwell to see if they are managing well.”

The Coffee Club’s Nepean Village store is celebrating its 10th birthday next week

n December 17, 2010 David Moylan took a leap of faith to become the Franchisee of The Coffee Club Nepean Village.

10 years on, he is celebrating providing good food, great service and excellent coffee to locals.

Having a passion for hospitality, Mr Moylan said he loves being a part of Australia’s largest home- grown café group that has around 400 stores in nine countries.

“I used to work for The Coffee Club and realised there was a good site in Penrith so decided to take the chance and take it on 10 years ago,” Mr Moylan said.

“My business and the whole brand grew so I acquired the Westfield Penrith store last year and both are going really well.”

Having been in the business for the last 10 years, Mr Moylan said he has seen a real shift in the food scene.

“Over the year a big change has been people switching to take- away and the introduction of food delivery services such as Uber Eats and Menu Log,” he said.

“There has also been a big shift from lunch and dinner trade to a real solid breakfast and of course brunch scene which was something that didn’t exist 10 years ago.”

Serving up countless smashed avocados, Mr Moylan said his businesses were lucky to survive COVID19, which hit the hospitality sector particularly hard.

“We were really lucky that Nepean Village is a grocery driven centre, so we traded every day throughout COVID even if it was just take- away and deliveries,” he said.

“We did have to reduce staffing levels, but we held through and have come out better on the other side.”

To thank the community for supporting the café over the last 10 years, Mr Moylan said he is offering up some delicious specials.

“On Thursday, December 17 The Coffee Club Nepean Village will be hosting a fun and exciting celebration of our time so far, and for all of our loyal customers,” he said.

Charity hits right notes Local school students help record song that raises money for rural kids in need EMILY FESZCZUK

L

ast year country music artist Jason Owen started ‘Doin it for Rural Aussie Kids’, a charity to help children from rural communities in need.

This year, to support the 2020 appeal, Jason has enlisted the help of three local Year 6 students to sing back-up with him on a very special song.

As part of the initiative, Jason has released a cover of the John Lennon classic ‘So This Is Christmas’ to help the appeal that delivers money, toys, gifts and groceries to children around the country.

Helping towns affected by bushfires, drought and now COVID-19, Jason said he wanted to get some special kids on board.

“My producer found three amazing singers in Hannah, Brodie and Jayden whose school was near the Blue Mountains bushfires but luckily wasn’t affected,” he said.

“They, like other kids around Australia, have gone through a scary time due to last year’s events and I’m glad they had such a great experience singing on the track.”

It was the first time that identical twins Brodie and Jayden Miles and their classmate Hannah Selby from our Lady of the Way in Emu Plains have sung professionally on a single.

11- year- old Hannah from Emu Heights said she loved the experience of being in the recording studio for the first time.

“I felt quite at home in the studio and I had to record the chorus eight times, as they needed to put an echo like effect on it as part of the song,” she said.

The 11-year-old Orchard Hills twin brothers said it was nice to give back to kids going through a tough time.

“It was a very scary time for us last year because we were worried the fires might reach where we were, but we were lucky that it didn’t hit us,” Jayden said.

“It’s nice to be able to help kids by singing on a charity single so they can have Christmas presents to look forward to, especially if their homes got burnt down.”

Local buses decked out in Christmas decorations to raise money for WestCare

L

ocal bus operator Busways is decking the halls of its buses this festive season with bright and colourful decorations all for a good cause.

Spreading Christmas cheer around the community with its dressed up buses, Busways will be raising funds for local charity WestCare Community Services.

The annual Christmas Bus initiative is spread across Busways’ 18 depots from Yamba on the NSW north coast to Londsale in South Australia and of course Penrith for western Sydney.

Busways Penrith Operations Manager, Andrew Robertson, said each depot chooses a local charity to raise money for, with Penrith selecting WestCare Community Services, which helps people from the area who are in need.

“Our Christmas Bus Initiative is driven by the people working at our depots who chose a local charity to support and have taken pride in decorating their buses,” Mr Robertson said.

“Our Christmas buses get behind a

great cause and create a good feeling for everyone, our drivers can’t wait to see the smiling faces of their passengers when they hop on the bus each day.”

With a selection of Busways Penrith buses showing off their merry looks on a range of different routes, Mr Robertson said they are asking customers to get on board and support the fundraising ‘drive’.

Busways will then add to donations received with its own $5,000 donation spread across all the selected charities.

“Busways wishes all our customers a happy and safe festive holiday season and we encourage the community to enjoy and donate,” he said.

“We’d love to top funds raised in previous years after what has been a challenging year for many to say the least.”

The buses will be decked out and around town until Tuesday, December 22. Customers can donate on-board by scanning a QR code located within the Christmas buses.

Donations will be accepted until Monday, December 21.

T

he NSW Government will be rolling out 50 new electric buses across Sydney over the next year, to transition the state’s fleet of 8,000 buses to zero emission technology.

Aiming to complete the whole process by 2030, Transport for NSW is calling for local manufacturers to get on board, but a St Marys company already has its wheels in motion.

Custom Bus Group National Contracts Manager, Grant Mascord, told the Weekender that they are already doing final testing on their first prototype.

“Transport for NSW released an expression of interest earlier this year and we applied, but we actually had already started the process of building electric buses in late 2019,” he said.

“We knew that electric buses are the way of the future and there is a need for Australian-built products so we were confident that different operators would want them.”

A part of the Custom Denning group, Mr Mascord said they have plans to be delivering buses next year.

“We are expecting to go into production to allow delivery to customers from mid-

March or early April subject to Transport for NSW approval,” he said.

“We are going to trial two buses, with one being at Busways Penrith depot, and another at another Sydney operator and these will have the first marking of the Custom Denning brand.”

While electric buses are more expensive than traditional diesel buses, Mr Mascord said the benefits outweigh the price.

“We are using solid state battery technol-

ogy that whilst a little dearer than current lithium-ion batteries have a better service life and will lower the overall costs over the life of the bus,” he said.

“No other manufacturer in Australia has built with this technology, but it means they have lower maintenance cost overall.”

With production expected to ramp up next year, Mr Mascord said it will be a great thing for the local community.

“We are already talking to TAFE about training more people on how to build and, if orders for the buses are confirmed, we will have the capability to increase staff to help get up to 400 buses a year manufactured,” he said.

“We have already outgrown our site and moved manufacturing to a new site as we build a lot of the parts ourselves, so keeping it all in the local area is very important for us.”

St Marys Leagues Club hosts special event to recognise passion and commitment EMILY FESZCZUK

uring a year plagued with drought, bushfires, floods and the COVID- 19 pandemic, volunteers have stepped up to help those need in the community.

St Marys Rugby League Club wanted to acknowledge some of those who made a difference in the area by holding a Christmas luncheon this week for local charity members.

St Marys Rugby League Club Marketing Manager, Cathy Rowley said the idea to host a free event was to simply say thanks.

“We were sitting down in a Board meeting and saying wow what a year we have had, these events have affected families, communities, businesses, livelihoods and occasionally our spirits,” Ms Rowley said.

“Michael Lau, the owner of our new seated buffet restaurant Signatures, said he wanted to give back to those at Christmas time who had worked really hard this year, so we made it happen.”

Holding the lunch at Signatures Buffet, the club hosted volunteers and board members from six local organisations including The Salvation Army Youthlink Reconnect Program, PCYC, and The Haven Women’s Shelter.

Ms Rowley said she hoped the hardworking volunteers enjoyed a delicious lunch and shared in the spirit of Christmas.

“We did a raffle and got gift bags for all the children with items donated from

local businesses which was nice,” Ms Rowley said.

“Our plan was for everyone to walk away with a nice full belly and a gift and I think we succeeded.”

Penrith PCYC President and Penrith Community Kitchen Secretary, Gai Hawthorn said recognising the volunteers was a beautiful gesture.

“To have someone like Saints who

reaches out and says we want to celebrate together is amazing and including charities from St Marys and Penrith shows how much of an inclusive LGA we are,” she said.

“These volunteers don’t want to get thanked, they do the work because they have a passion for the community and they care about the charities, but it is lovely to recognise them.”

ach year Santa makes a special visit to sick kids at Nepean Hospital to spread some Christmas cheer to those who cannot join festive celebrations.

Due to COVID- 19 visiting restrictions, Santa had to move with the current times and chat with the children’s ward via video conferencing.

Santa’s helper from Colyton, Santa George Asciak said that talking through an iPad was a different experience but the event turned out great.

“The kids didn’t know what to say at first but when I explained I had to visit them virtually from my workshop they were OK and it went off well,” Mr Asciak said.

“There were lots of high fives through the screen and smiles when I told them I was dealing with elves everywhere because we had to socially distance them.”

Nepean Hospital Children’s Ward Registered Nurse, Sarah Lewis said it has been tricky this year with COVID restrictions in place, but they are keeping spirits high.

“Normally we would have lots and lots of Christmas decorations and a big Christmas tree up, but we are very limited in what we can do but we’re still trying to do what we can,” Ms Lewis said.

“We’re putting lots of baubles on the ceiling and keeping the kids happy with lots of ice cream and jelly and reminding them that it is still Christmas time and that we still care.”

Along with helping with visits, Mr Asciak donates money from his dazzling home Christmas light display to Nepean Hospital each year but said it has been a much quieter year for Santa.

“This would have been my 18th year dressing up and my fourth year supporting Nepean Hospital, but I haven’t been allowed to go big as I cannot draw crowds to my Arcadia Place display,” he said.

“Santa’s electricity bill will be a lot less this year, but I am still trying to raise money for the hospital so if people want to donate, they can do it directly online.”

R&CA CEO Wes Lambert congratulated each of the winners on behalf of the Association, recognising

Organisers of the Penrith City Carols have confirmed a virtual event will go ahead this weekend in lieu of the traditional in-person celebration.

It was announced in September that this year’s major carols event in Penrith would not go ahead due to ongoing COVID- 19 restrictions. But organisers say they still wanted to spread the Christmas spirit this year, and will hold a virtual night of festive fun.

On Sunday, December 13 Julia Parashko, Jim Aitken and Nicki Morton will be going live from the You Can Dance Studio in Emu Plains.

SLIDE, SWING AND CLIMB AT IRONBARK A whirly gig spinner, frog rocker and birds nest swing are just some of the fun new elements added to Ironbark Reserve Playspace through a recent upgrade.

The upgrade has brought new life to the Cranebrook reserve, making it more inviting for young and old.

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said as well as the new play equipment, extensive landscaping, a picnic shelter and other shaded seating had turned Ironbark Reserve into a refuge for the community.

“Council recognises that to make Penrith more liveable we need to create more shade in our open spaces and make our city greener,” Cr McKeown said.

State Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres this week presented three of the state’s longest serving Justices of the Peace with their commendation certificates for 50 years of service.

“It is a wonderful achievement to have provided this important voluntary service to the community for such a long period of time and today’s certificate recipients are well deserving of this recognition,” Mr Ayres said.

“Most people require the services of a JP at some point in their life and these JPs have been on hand to offer their assistance.”

Local Penrith recipients include: Gordon Neil, John Cowen, Raymond Carlin, Robert Sheridan, Rhonda Crimston and James Mason.

Justices of the Peace serve as an independent witness to documents people use for official or legal purposes.

Their duties include witnessing the signing of statutory declarations and certifying copies of original documents. JPs provide their services on a voluntary basis.

MORE TREES PROMISED FEELING GREEN

New green life will be breathed into Penrith with new trees to be planted across the region.

The State Government’s Greening Our City program will provide $10 million in grants to 30 councils and two partner organisa tions across two funding streams – Cooler Suburbs and Green Innovations.

Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said the program supports the ‘Premier’s Priority’ to increase the tree canopy

and green cover across Greater Sydney by planting one million trees by 2022.

“Tree cover is so valuable for lowering heat, providing protection and enhancing our lives,” Mr Ayres said.

Penrith City Council will receive funding of more than $1.5 million to implement the Cooling the City Strategy which involves planting approximately 3,000 trees in our local parks and 2,000 trees

along footpaths in key road reserves.

Additionally a Junglefy Breathing Wall will be installed to adorn the Soper Place car park façade as part of its revitalisation and redevelopment.

Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils will receive $275,000 to plant over 200 trees across the Penrith and Blacktown LGAs focusing on areas in critical need of additional canopy cover.

Cinema classics under the stars oonlight C i n e m a ’s bean beds have been f luffed, the lawns m a n i c u r e d , and the silver screens are sparkling as it makes a grand return for summer.

The country’s biggest outdoor cinema chain is celebrating 25 years and is welcoming back movie lovers to its beautiful inner-city spots.

Moonlight Cinema Marketing Manager, Nicola Whiteside told the Weekender that it’s amazing how the event has grown over the years in the major cities.

“The first season started in Melbourne in the Royal Botanic Gardens in 1995 which was just two guys setting a screen up and it grew into something much bigger and exciting,” she said.

“Centennial Park was the second venue to launch in 1996 and they were always accommodating as they knew how great an outdoor cinema would be for the community.”

Ms Whiteside said the film line- up will feature a lot of retro classic titles to celebrate the 25th anniversary.

“We have a lot of classics like ‘Dirty Dancing’ along with favourites such as ‘The Greatest Showman’ and in the lead up to Christmas, festive fun with ‘Love Actually’, ‘Elf’ and ‘Home Alone’,” she said.

“We’ve also got a lot of family content with some big films like ‘Frozen 2’ and ‘Trolls’ which we will show on the big screen.”

Ms Whiteside said it is a very family friendly event.

“We have noticed families really like it as it is quite affordable, you get tickets then you can visit the food trucks to get popcorn and cider or we are BYO so you can bring your own picnic,” she said.

“We are licensed and in a fenced, safe area so parents can let kids run on the grass while they enjoy a glass of wine and then snuggle up as a family for the movie.”

With options for date nights and catch ups with friends, Ms Whiteside said it really is a night for all.

“We have our premium seating sections coming back with lots of rom-coms which are perfect for a date night or you can have a picnic with a group of friends before the film starts,” she said.

Following the typical genre formula, the movie does delve into deeper things which gives it a fresh take.

With the storyline featuring sibling rivalry and trying not to ruin Christmas, any audience can relate.

Keeping your feet healthy and safe during the hot summer months

oming into summer our Podiatrists see a variety of conditions that worsen through these months. A little bit of daily care can prevent your feet suffering from common ailments such as callus, fungal skin infections, foot pain and injury.

Keep reading to find out how to keep your feet healthy and happy this summer.

Take care of your skin Friction and pressure can cause skin buildup such as calluses and corns.

To avoid this we recommend wearing more enclosed shoes with a firm heel counter for support.

Your skin integrity can be improved by keeping it moisturised with a urea based emollient such as heel balm applied daily.

To supplement this, use a pumice stone once a week to reduce buildup of callus.

If significant amounts of callus or corns build up a general treatment

with a podiatrist will have your feet feeling smooth in no time.

Choose footwear wisely We advise to keep your feet protected with footwear in summer to prevent burning your feet or injuring them.

Our first footwear choice would be a supportive orthopaedic sandal as they will secure your feet into the shoe, providing more stability and minimising skin friction.

so it’s important to check your feet regularly for any signs/symptoms.

Top tips to make sure you have a safe summer

W

e are all looking forward to some hard earned time off over the festive season, but Royal Life Saving Australia research shows that Australians are twice more likely to drown on a public holiday than any other day of the year, with a total of 210 Australians drowning on public holidays over the past 15 years.

Those travelling out of their local area should be on particularly high alert, as they pose the highest risk across this busy period, being 2.5 times more likely to drown due to lack of knowledge and familiarly of the local water ways.

Alcohol is a significant contributor to public holiday drowning deaths, and it’s men that are commonly susceptible to a higher risk.

Whilst it may be no surprise that these busy days of the year see an uplift in drowning statistics, we need to do all within our control to minimise the risks.

My top 10 rules to follow this holiday season are:

1. Avoid alcohol around water.

2. Check for snags and currents before entering inland waterways or rivers.

3. Know your limits and never swim alone.

4. Swim at patrolled beaches between the flags.

5. Children under five should be arm’s reach at the beach, at the pool, and in every other aquatic environment.

6. Fence the pool, keep all gates closed and make sure they self-latch.

7. Be aware of other housed items which represent a drowning risk, ie eskys, inflatable pools, bathtub, buckets, fishponds, even pet bowls.

8. Make supervision of children the priority around all water – delegate a supervisor at all events with the adults talking turns on rotation.

9. Learn how to resuscitate.

10.Teach children to swim and continue to attend lessons regularly.

All about worms: How they can have a huge impact on our beloved pets

I

ntestinal worms commonly cause disease in dogs and cats. There are several types of worms including roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms. Intestinal worms are parasites that can be present ‘silently’ and generally will not cause disease until they are present in large numbers. The best approach is to prevent large worm burdens before animals become unwell.

Can parasites be life threatening?

YES! Hookworms are the most dangerous. They feed on blood and can cause life threatening anaemia.

The blood loss is not only from what they ingest but also due to secondary blood loss from gut ulceration. This can cause permanent damage to the bowel and some ani-

mals require a blood transfusion. They can also migrate out of the intestine and cause damage to other organs. They can go into stasis and then recur at later stages in life especially in pregnancy.

Roundworms and tapeworm feed on the nutrients in the intestines. The most common clinical signs include poor growth, dull hair coat, lack of energy, bloated abdomens and diarrhoea. There are two main types of tapeworm, the flea tapeworm and the zipper worm.

Whipworm infestation, which only affects dogs in Australia can also be life threatening. It often causes a waxing waning illness and intermittent diarrhoea. In large numbers it can cause alterations in the body’s ability to conserve salt, leading to severe dehydration.

Where do the worms come from?

Worm eggs are shed in faeces of infested animals but there are several ways new animals can be infected. It is very important to understand that puppies can have severe infestations even at very young ages.

Roundworms can cause infection

through ingestion of eggs in the soil, puppies can get worms from their mother while they are developing in the uterus and from drinking her milk. Eating a pray animal like a rodent can also cause infestation.

Hookworm eggs hatch into larvae and they enter another host by being ingested in contaminated soil, faecal contamination, suckling from an infected mother and they can even burrow directly into the skin. They can also be transmitted from ingestion of almost any other animal including rats, lizards and cockroaches.

Whipworm eggs take a while to develop so infected soil is the most common cause of infestation.

The flea tapeworm is only passed into dogs and cats through fleas. The flea larvae eat the tapeworm eggs, the worm develops in the flea, the flea is ingested when an animal grooms itself and the tapeworm is released into the gut when the flea is digested. The zipper tapeworm can be passed from hunting almost any vertebrate (most commonly rats and lizards).

How can we diagnose intestinal worms?

Roundworm and tapeworm are large enough to be seen in the animal’s stool, but the majority of parasites are very small.

A ‘faecal float’ test is used to diagnose the worm eggs under a microscope. Unfortunately, the worms can shed eggs intermittently and a false negative result may occur. Sometimes we elect to treat on suspicion of intestinal worms.

It is also important to note that intestinal parasites in dogs and cats can be transmitted to adults and children and these can make people very sick.

Fortunately, by using worming medication for your pets frequently, practicing good hygiene by washing hands after playing with your pets and cleaning faeces from yards and homes, infection with intestinal parasites can generally be avoided.

oyota’s stylish C-HR SUV has received a sporty boost as the first model in Australia to receive the GR Sport makeover.

hen local teenager Emma Matthias isn’t kicking around a soccer ball with Cranebrook United, you’ll find her breaking several records in track and field.

At just 14- years old, Emma is hugely talented in an array of sports and, as a result, has become the latest recipient of the Penrith Valley Sports Foundation Junior Sports Star Award.

The Emu Plains resident began her soccer career at the tender age of four and has just wrapped up her 10th season.

Emma, a striker, not only plays for her club on a weekly basis but represents her school and the Penrith area in soccer as well. She is so far and above the rest in her age group, that she currently plays two years up in her club team.

When Emma isn’t playing like the next Sam Kerr on the soccer pitch, you’ll find her at the local athletics track with either a shot put, javelin or discus in her hand.

Emma has been participating in Little Athletics for the past eight years with Emu Plains, but she also competes with people older than her as a member of Nepean Senior Athletics.

As a result of her impressive strength and ability, Emma currently holds several club records.

At the start of the athletics season, Emma broke a 17- year- old U14 shot put record (9.95m) when she threw an incredible 11.21m. Determined to break it even further, Emma broke the record for a second time when she heaved the shot put a massive 13.18m.

Not content with breaking just one record, Emma then proceeded to break another in discus – smashing the previous record (29.55m) set in 2018 with an almighty throw of 33.05m.

Not only has Emma dominated at club level, but she’s also broken athletics records at school, zone and regional competitions.

Earlier this year, Emma was due to represent her state in shot put at the Australian National Athletics Championships, but the event was cancelled due to COVID-19.

Emma is now focused and determined to come back next season just as strong or stronger to again qualify for Nationals and hopefully claim the title of National Champion.

Nominated by her mum Heather, Emma’s Junior Sports Star Award is all thanks to sponsor St Marys Leagues Club.

The Wanderers have four Sunday, three Saturday and three Thursday night fixtures this season, with home matches played across Bankwest Stadium, Marconi Stadium and the Wanderers Centre of Football.

The Red & Black will open the season with an historic double header, with the W- League side taking on Melbourne Victory in a blockbuster clash in Parramatta on December 27.

The Wander Women will then travel to Melbourne City on January 2 for a match against last season’s champions.

The first Sydney Derby will be held in Round 4 as part of an away double header at ANZ Stadium on January 16.

Returning home the following round, another double header will follow with the Wanderers facing Newcastle at Bankwest

Stadium in the afternoon of January 24.

The Wanderers will then travel to Lions Stadium for a Sunday afternoon fixture against the Roar before two back-to-back Thursday night games against Canberra United and Melbourne City at Marconi Stadium.

On the road, Western Sydney will face Adelaide United for the first time in Round 9 at Marden Sports Complex and will be back at home the following week for the Sydney Derby at Marconi Stadium on February 28.

An away match, bye, away match pattern will follow with the Wander Women taking on Newcastle and Canberra at their home grounds before wrapping up the regular season on March 27 at the club’s Centre of Football against Perth Glory.

“This year’s Westfield W- League is packed full of young, Australian talent as the players battle for places in the Westfield Matildas squad ahead of the rescheduled Olympic Games to be held in Tokyo and the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup,” Head of Leagues, Greg O’Rourke said.

“The world is watching women’s football in Australia, and we know how much fans want to be a part of the action too.”

win Creeks Golf & Country Club have claimed bragging rights over near neighbours Penrith Golf Club, in the Division II Metropolitan Major Pennant Final.

Led by wins from Matt DeVries (4/3), Tyrone Emtage (7/6), Justin McMilan (6/4) and Jeremy White (4/3), Twin Creeks took an early lead in the Final and could not be run down by a plucky Penrith team.

Jeff Gadd (4/3) was Penrith’s only winner, with both Wil Arnold and Dan Smyth’s matches declared as halvers after Twin Creeks registered the required four wins to claim the Pennant.

enrith Valley and Nepean Little Athletics centres have been given a much- needed funding boost for their upcoming season thanks to grants from Coles.

The Little Athletics centres in Penrith and St Marys were two of 158 grassroots sports clubs from around Australia to share in $521,000 for sports equipment from the latest round of the supermarket’s Little Athletics Community Fund.

Penrith Valley Little Athletics President Michelle Hayes said the $2900 grant to buy new carts, trolleys and modified equipment will help get its athletes and volunteers back on track.

“The new equipment will help expand our Tiny Tots program for three to five-

year-olds. It will also allow us to cater for a larger group of tots and provide more variety to their weekly program,” she said.

Penrith Valley athletes and committee members thanked Coles Penrith Store Manager Matthew Grundy last Friday evening at Parker Street Oval.

Meanwhile, Nepean Little Athletics Centre was awarded $5000 in funding.

President Heike Forth said the grant will provide much-needed relief after the volunteer-run club was hit twice by floods earlier this year.

“We lost a great deal of equipment from the floods and we had to use second-hand gear to tide us over to finish last season,” she said.

“Thanks to the grant, we’ll be able to purchase new discuses, shot puts and hurdles to give our athletes greater opportunities to develop their skills.”

enrith and the Wests Tigers are reportedly on the verge of a player swap deal that will see local junior Zac Cini return to the foot of the Mountains.

Rising Panthers fullback Daine Laurie has already signed with the Tigers for 2022, but he could be at the club as early as next season if the swap deal goes ahead.

The deal could be finalised before Christmas, it has been reported.

20-year- old Cini is an Australian schoolboy centre who played his junior football with Minchinbury.

The deal is set to boost both players’ chances of playing more first grade football in 2021 if it goes ahead.

Laurie is stuck behind Dylan Edwards at the Panthers and is likely to only be used as backup next season.

Meanwhile the Panthers may find themselves in need of a centre next year should Brent Naden face time out of the game.

Naden was recently stood down by the NRL after returning a drug test that revealed he had cocaine in his system during the 2020 Grand Final.
