THE HEARTBEAT OF PENRITH

WE’RE A FINALIST The Western Weekender has been named as a fi nalist at the PANPA Newspaper of the Year awards. The Weekender is nominated in the non-daily category for newspapers that have a circulation of between 25,001 and 90,000 copies. The Newspaper Works, which presents the awards, said there has been a great response from mastheads this year, with a strong field of entries.

n the next four weeks, Federal Election candidates will leave no door un-knocked, no fence free of election posters, and no train station without tired campaigners. September 7 is the date when the nation decides whether the Labor Party retains power or hands it to the Liberal Party, with the result set to come down to the wire. And nowhere is this choice more important than Lindsay, where sitting Labor MP, David Bradbury, retains the electorate by the slimmest of margins.

In 2010 he retained Lindsay by just 1.1 per cent over Liberal candidate, Fiona Scott after Ms Scott was pre-selected just days before the election was called. But second time around, the showdown between Mr Bradbury and Ms Scott is set to be fierce, with both candidates unofficially on the campaign trail months ago. “The choice between the major parties could not be clearer,” Ms Scott said. “At this election, the Coalition offers strong, experienced and stable government, a stronger economy, stronger borders, a stronger Australia and a better future – for all Australians. “Labor is offering just more of the same: more

talk, more chaos, more division, more debt, more deficits and more taxes.” In contrast, Mr Bradbury is asking residents that come poll day, they judge him on his experience and achievements. “I have fought hard to secure real improvements that have made our community a better place for people to live and work and now I am asking for the chance to continue delivering for our community,” he said. The campaign begins as both Mr Bradbury and Ms Scott agree to take part in a debate, hosted by the Weekender, on August 20 at Penrith RSL. Story Continues Page Seven

Uni life can be a tough road University students face uncertain times during their years of study From working two jobs, to living on campus, to still being at home. The re seems to be no ‘normal’ when it comes to the life of a university student...

U

KATHERINE TWEED

niversity students live with many different stereotypes that sometimes cloud the reality of what living as a student really

entails. They are said to be extremely poor, working two or three minimum wage jobs to make enough money for takeaway or microwave meals each night, living under piles of books and only surfacing once a month when they have a few extra dollars. Numerous studies have been released over the years, some claiming that students are drowning in debt and others suggesting that the large majority should be considered as impoverished but is this the reality of life of a university student; is there a single stereotype? 20-year-old Macquarie University student, Brittany Yalden, lived with her parents in Silverdale for two years before moving to live in a share house on campus in the Macquarie University Village to complete the fi nal year of her Bachelor of Biodiversity and Conservation. “I don’t think there is a ‘normal life’ for a uni student. People range from ages 18 to 80, there was literally an 80-year-old woman in my in my fi rst year biology class,” she said. “From supporting themselves to being supported by Centrelink or their parents; from having classes one day a week to having classes five days a week, plus weekend field trips; from being studious to partying every day... there is no ‘normal life’.” Ms Yalden works two jobs, as a koala handler at Featherdale Wildlife Park and as a dugong keeper at Sea Life Sydney

Aquarium, so that she can afford her new on-campus lifestyle. “The income from one of my jobs goes straight to my rent and my other income is spent on Internet and phone bills, train tickets and the activities I partake in my free time, like travelling to work on a documentary I am involved in,” she said. “The cost of living out of home really does change the way that I approach my studies. It’s hard to fit everything in. I think the marks people get mostly reflect the amount of time they have to study rather than their intelligence level.”

In contrast, Melinda Mikhael, currently in her third year of a Bachelor of Science at the University of Sydney, shares her family home in Werrington with eight family members whilst she completes her studies. For most things, she is fina ncially dependent on her parents. “A normal life for a uni student is to constantly be stressed, tired and out of pocket,” she said. “Uni students only have a social life on weekends occasionally and when eating their daily meals. Every other part of the day, students are studying, travelling to

and from uni or catching up on sleep. “Having no stable income makes it difficult if I need to spend the whole day at uni and have no spare cash to keep me going.” Like Ms Yalden, who struggles to fit in all her study requirements, work commitments and social habits, Ms Mikhael fi nds the university lifestyle a struggle. “Either way, uni is a struggle for every student because if they are not working, they have no money and if they are working, then they have no time,” she said.

ANDREW WILCOX for LINDSAY

| Friday, August 9, 2013

S is for September 8. Because it’ll all be over then

T is for Tony Abbott. He’s the guy who had this election won until Kevin 07 became Kevin September 7. He’s had a slow start to his campaign this week, and didn’t look like an Opposition Leader who’s had three years of preparation behind him.

I is for interest rates. They’re nothing to do with the actual election campaign, but have become an issue by default. Labor wants you to believe Joe Hockey wants them higher.

L is for Lindsay. Labor must hold on to the seat if it wants to stay in power.

04

S is for September 8. Because it’ll all be over then.

V is for victory speech. One of the leaders will deliver one on September 7.

K is for kissing babies. You’ll see plenty of it at shopping centres and other ‘impromptu’ media events during the campaign.

I welcome your call for any assistance

R is for roads. A dangerous place to be with all those people waving advertising signs at you from the side.

H is for hard hats. Protection for the obligatory factory walk through.

J is for journalism. A word The Daily Telegraph forgot on Monday.

OAM FAIM

O is for oops. A word most likely uttered by both Jaymes Diaz and David Bradbury this week.

Q is for questions. There’s usually a lot more of these than answers during the campaign.

D is for debating. And yes, Fiona Scott and David Bradbury will do just that on August 20 at Penrith RSL. E is for the economy. It’ll be one of the big buzz words of the election campaign and you’ll be constantly reminded that you should care about it. Truth is, most people really only care about their own personal bank balance and circumstances.

N is for Nauru. Never heard of it? Neither have the ‘boat people’ believing they’re en route to Australia.

P is for picking noses. First one to spot someone going in for a dive in the background of a press conference wins a prize.

C is for Clive Palmer. Don’t be surprised if you see more of him than you expect during the campaign.

F is for Fiona Scott. Second time up, she’s wearing through the shoes big time as she door knocks across the local area to meet residents.

Business sweetener Abbott pledges to cut company tax rate if elected

I

TROY DODDS

n one of the biggest announcements of the election campaign so far, the Coalition has promised it will cut the company tax rate by 1.5 per cent from July 1, 2015 if elected. The company tax rate would be 28.5 per cent, a move aimed at encouraging investment in Australian businesses and jobs during a time of economic uncertainty. “Lowering the company tax rate is part of our plan to build a strong, prosperous economy with more investment and more jobs,” said Opposition Leader, Tony Abbott. “For six years Mr Rudd and Labor have talked about a company tax cut but have not delivered. “The Coalition understands the clear connection between taxation policy and investment, jobs and increasing wages.” Assistant Treasurer and Lindsay MP, David Bradbury labelled the move a “con”. “Th is so-called tax cut will provide no relief to the two thirds of small businesses that are not incorporated,” Mr Bradbury said. “Tony Abbott has already confir med that he will scrap the $6,500 instant asset tax write-off and loss carry-back that Labor has introduced to provide important tax relief for small businesses.

Proposed interchange upgrade Russell Street, Leonay Parade and M4 westbound on/off ramps, Leonay

Former Prime Minister given hero’s welcome in Penrith

S

Roads and Maritime Services is seeking your comments on the proposed upgrade of the M4 Western Motorway w estbound on/off ramps at Russell Street and Leonay Parade, Leonay. The proposal involves installing metered traffic lights to control southbound traffic on Russell Street during peak periods, reducing the size of the roundabout island and providing a new left turn lane for traffic to access Leonay Parade. If approved it will improve journeys by: • Reducing queue lengths and delays. • Making it easier for long vehicles to perform safer turning movements.

howing that he could still inspire an audience, former Prime Minister, Bob Hawke, was the guest of honour at Member for Lindsay, David Bradbury’s campaign launch on Sunday afternoon. Held at the Penrith RSL, over 160 people gave a standing ovation to Mr Hawke and his wife Blanche as they entered; and an even greater applause for his emotive speech. Mr Hawke said he had absolute confidence in the Labor Party and its leader, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. “Kevin Rudd will do everything he can to lead us to victory,” he said. “To have good representation and to have good government there are two things you need. First of all, a good representative. “I know the facts and you all live with the facts of what has been achieved with David Bradbury being the Member for Lindsay. But you have to also be representative of good policy.” Mr Hawke went on to draw comparisons between his own Government and the challenges that the current Government now face, saying that the battle would be fought on three important issues; economic credibility, education funding and management of foreign affairs.

Former Prime Minister, Bob Hawke, launches Labor’s campaign in Lindsay last Sunday.

“You need a government in Canberra that understands the Australian economy and the context in which the economy operates,” he said. Labor’s longest serving Prime Minister said it was up to the public to make an intelligent and informed choice about the policies put forward by Labor on

education and asylum seekers. “If you believe it is right for Labor to be re-elected, then play your part,” he told the audience of Labor supporters. “We generally say before any election that these are important times, but it could not be more true now. Times are changing.”

Weekender up for top award Newspaper of the Year nomination a “great vote of confidence”

T

he Western Weekender has been named a fi nalist at this year’s PANPA Newspaper of the Year awards. The Weekender is nominated in the non-daily category for newspapers that have a circulation of between 25,001 and 90,000 copies. The Newspaper Works, which presents the awards, said there has been a great response from mastheads this year, with a strong field of entries. “It is great to see the level of participation of newspapers and digital properties from around the region,” CEO Mark Hollands said. “Whether big or small, news organisations have again taken part in these awards in big numbers.” The awards are a chance for the newspaper industry to celebrate their great work in the face of adversity, given the difficult economic climate and period of transition they currently operate in. “Tough conditions in the market, and major structural changes in our businesses that is now taking place, mean it is important for everyone to focus not only on the challenges but also on the great work we do, and our contribution to society, our readers and commercial partners and clients,” he said. Western Weekender Editor, Troy Dodds, said it was a great vote of confidence in the newspaper. “We’re exceptionally proud to be a fi nalist at the Newspaper of the Year awards and I’m personally proud of our team here who have contributed to the nomination,” he said.

Journalists Cassandra O’Connor and Nathan Taylor, Editor Troy Dodds, Sales Manager Simon Gould and journalist Katherine Tweed.

“I’d like to thank our readers and advertisers for their continued support. Our team works hard to deliver the most relevant, accurate and informative

product for this region each week and a nomination such as this is a fantastic recognition of that.” The winners will be announced at a gala

dinner on August 29, 2013 at The Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney as part of the Future Forum, an annual conference attended by the newspaper industry.

lipout is the trampolining success on Mulgoa Road that is bringing crowds in the thousands to Penrith. But the owner of Flipout, Brent Grundy is still sorting out development application issues with Penrith City Council. “A story we did last week [in another publication] made it sound like we are closing, but we are not. We are just sorting out the development application and have been visited by Council offic ers several times,” Mr Grundy said. Flipout was originally built at Penrith Panthers and then was to relocate to the AMF Bowling centre on Batt Street, Jamisontown. However, because of high demand, the business relocated to Mulgoa Road.

“We were going to apply for a temporary DA but when Council offic ers saw the site they suggested we should put in a permanent application,” Mr Grundy said. “Unfortunately, Council reckons that the land can’t have outdoor recreation, so the one trampoline we have outside is causing a few problems. But the kids love the outdoor trampoline so we are looking for a solution.” A spokesperson from Penrith Council confi rmed the zoning was a major reason the development application was rejected. The spokesperson said that Mr Grundy had been issued with a fi ne, and that Council would continue with compliance action. Mr Grundy said the issue was a minor one, and no matter what, the trampolines operating inside his centre would remain open.

Child care providers worried about new funding model

MAYOR’S NEWS MARK DAVIES

CASSANDRA O'CONNOR

ocal child care providers are concerned that the State Government will strip funding from centres if a new funding model is adopted. Changes to NSW Government funding for community pre-schools are being proposed in response to a major review of early childhood funding undertaken by Professor Deborah Brennan. Leanne Gibbs, CEO of the Community Child Care Cooperative, said that not enough detail has been released, and that the changes appear to spread the same level of funding thinner. “They haven’t actually released the full details of the changes and the problem is that they are changing the model to encompass more, but haven’t committed to additional funding, she said. Ms Gibbs said the Government has committed to targeted funding for four and five-year-old children in their year before school, as well as to three-year-old children who are from disadvantaged families. “However, the research shows that two years of pre-school is far more benefic ial later in life than just one year, she said “And many three-year-olds enrol and become four-year-olds at centres, yet they will have to pay much higher fees at the younger age, possibly up to $80 a day. The Community Child Care Cooperative has voiced their concerns to the State Government in a joint

submission with KU Child Services, who run several centres in Penrith, Uniting Care Children’s Services, and Australian Community Children’s Services NSW. A spokesperson for the NSW Education Department said the new funding model addresses the concerns raised in the review by Professor Brennan.

“As is currently the case, the funding allocation provided to pre-schools would be dependent on the enrolment data that they report in August of each year, the spokesperson said. The spokesperson wouldn’t confir m that all centres would at least receive the same level of funding as previous years.

If you’ve got a project that would help out your fellow residents, I encourage you to apply for Council funds to help get it up and running. Council’s Community Assistance Program (CAP) is now open, offering small grants of up to $1,200 to local non-profit organisations and community groups. The funding can be used to support grassroots projects, events and activities or to buy valuable community resources. Last year Council funded 37 local projects, with more than 360 CAP grants delivered over the past 10 years. Over that time the CAP has supported many initiatives, including providing children’s literacy resources, music equipment for seniors, a childcare service sandpit, and sporting awards for young people with a disability. Applications close 4pm, Monday August 19, 2013. Find out more by visiting www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au or call Council on 4732 7838 for an information package.

Chapter closes at UWS: Reid announces her retirement

rchard Hills residents watched on as fi re crews battled a large, raging grass fi re in the suburb on Monday afternoon. At about 4.10pm, NSW Fire and Rescue crews were called out to a fi re burning on a property alongside Kingswood Road. Officers told the Weekender that there was no danger of the fi re consuming nearby houses however, the fi re was just metres away from a local school, and due to its close proximity to the M4 Motorway,

smoke was affecting visibility for drivers during the peak hour drive home. Crews managed to contain the fir e quickly but not before acres of trees, shrubs and grass were destroyed. “It was pretty messy, the bush was pretty high,” said local resident, David Butfield. “It was due to happen because it was pretty dry, we hadn’t had any rain. It was just a matter of time.” The cause of the fi re was not immediately known, though there were fears that it may have been caused by a cigarette butt.

Highway work Motorists can expect delays along the Great Western Highway at St Marys from Monday, with major roadworks underway between Princess Mary Street and Gipps Street. The work will last two months and will be undertaken between 8pm and 5am each weeknight.

Janice Reid, UWS Vice Chancellor.

Binge drinking Alcohol-related assaults are down but binge drinking is still a major issue, the State Government says. “Currently in NSW almost one in three people aged 16 and over drink at levels that put them at risk of harm – that’s an extremely alarming statistic,” said Minister Kevin Humphries.

Castlereagh house has had an unlucky year

Men arrested: Home invasion breakthrough The efforts of police attached to Penrith LAC, Mount Druitt LAC, Operation Countdown Hoon and the Dog Squad have seen two men arrested on break and enter charges. On the morning of Thursday, August 1, the owners of a home on Fifth Avenue, Llandilo, returned home to fi nd a number of people on their property and inside their home. Police were notified and given the details of a car that was seen by the homeowners. The car was found by police in Willmot. The premises where the car was located was then surrounded and two men, a 31-year-old and a 32-year-old, who police allege were involved in the break and enter, were subsequently arrested and charged. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Chemist robbed: Man steals medication A man is on the run after the armed robbery of a chemist in High Street, Penrith. At about 8.05pm on Friday, August 2, a man entered the store armed with a long, silver pole. The man demanded an amount of cash from staff and was refused before he demanded an amount of prescription drugs. The man left the store with nothing but a packet of prescription medication. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Dark secret revealed: Londonderry drug bust

Police are investigating a fire at this Castlereagh house last week.

On the evening of Wednesday, May 22, police made their way across the front lawn of the Rickards Road property, in the line of fi re, where they found a man laying with numerous gunshot wounds to his back and buttocks. Police investigating the fi re say that the two incidents may be connected. “Police formed the view it was a suspicious fir e because of where and how the fi re started. We are looking at a number of lines of inquiry that include a possible link to the shooting earlier this year,” said Penrith LAC Crime Manager, Grant Healey. Police conducting the investigation are urging the public to come forward with any information that may be of help. Contact Penrith police on 4721 9444.

Police were patrolling a particularly dark part of Trahlee Road in Londonderry on Friday, August 2, when they came across a suspicious vehicle parked on the roadside at about 7.40pm. Police pulled over near the silver Toyota Hilux and spoke to the driver, a 19-year-old from McGraths Hill. The vehicle was then searched and police allege that they located drug paraphernalia and a substance they allege to be prohibited drugs. The man was charged with possessing prohibited drugs and possessing equipment related to the use of prohibited drugs. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Man hit by car: Police investigating incident

A man is in hospital after falling off the back of a truck. Near the intersection of Jamison Road and Station Street, the man fell off the truck and was laying on the road when he was struck by another car. He is in a serious condition in hospital and no-one has been charged in relation to the incident.

ocal police are conducting investigations into a suspicious house fi re on a property which, in a chilling twist, was the scene of a violent shooting just months ago. Police and emergency services were called to the property on Rickards Road, Castlereagh at about 10pm on Thursday, August 2. The house on the property, home to a family of five, was engulfed in flames and destroyed. Luckily, there was no-one home at the time. Dear Weekender

Have your say: write to the editor

email : news@westernweekender.com.au post : Suite 2, 42-44 Abel Street, Jamisontown 2750.

To smack or not to smack? There is a massive gap between smacking a child once to gain their attention if they are downright in the wrong space, and abusing them incessantly, relentlessly and unashamedly (From The Editor’s Desk, Western Weekender August 2). The problem is, many do not know the line and smack repeatedly thinking it will improve a bad situation. I also believe many cases of abuse are either not reported or managed correctly (regardless of who – parents, siblings, friends, relatives, governmental and social welfare departments) so that they go unnoticed until a child lives in severe pain or dies as a result (either by inflic tion or by self). To be honest, I think we need to go back to the roots of parenting and not just teach birthing, but parenting. True counselling and readiness programs for parents, especially if they have a history of abuse. Jonathon Mascorella, via Facebook . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Smacking is fine I feel that all my rights of being a parent are being taken away from me. Smacking a child to teach them a lesson is fi ne as far as I am concerned. I don’t agree with those who do this for petty things. That is when it turns into abuse! They are the ones who should be kept an eye on, not those of us who are trying to instil the

A clear choice

ow that the Federal election campaign is under way, I’m enjoying the chance to meet Australians and talk to them about why Labor is the best party to lead our nation. Labor understands that families across western Sydney and the nation are feeling pressure from the cost of living. Part of it is caused by the significant economic transformation facing our nation with the end of the China mining boom. Our nation needs to carefully manage this transformation. We need to return our budget to surplus. But it would be foolish to do that in a way that would risk jobs and damage the economy. Tony Abbott and the Coalition plan $70 billion worth of spending cuts. Such drastic action is the last thing the nation needs. It would take money out of schools, hospitals and construction. Labor understands that families appreciate help from the government. That’s why we lifted the Child Care Rebate from 30 per cent to 50 per cent – worth up to $7500 a year. It’s also why we created the Schoolkids Bonus, Australia’s fi rst paid parental leave scheme and tripled the tax free threshold.

s readers of the Western Weekender would know, the Prime Minister has called for the election to be held on Saturday, September 7. At this election, Australians face the clearest choice in a generation. The Coalition’s Real Solutions Plan will deliver a strong, prosperous economy and a safe, secure Australia. By contrast, Labor just offers more of the same: more talk, more chaos, more division, more debt, more deficits, more taxes and more boats. Only the Coalition can form the strong, stable government to deliver a stronger economy with more jobs, real help for families and small business, lower taxes and secure borders. During the course of this election campaign, the Coalition will be making further announcements about our positive Plan to develop and build a strong, prosperous economy. On September 7, I’m asking for your support for our candidates in western Sydney, including Fiona Scott in Lindsay, to make the real change to a stronger, united government with a Plan to build a stronger Australia.

Destined to fail Kevin Rudd has been engaged in a scare campaign about the greatest morale challenge to face the world, global warming. He intends to send desperate refugees to the tiny island of Nauru. If global warming is the threat to the world claimed by Rudd this latest Nauru solution must fail. Nauru is vulnerable to rising levels, has limited water supplies, poor health facilities, volcanic eruptions, and limited job opportunities. The island is at risk of climate sensitive diseases, including heat and vectorborne diseases, waterborne diseases, diseases related to extreme weather conditions, ie floods, droughts, windstorms and fi res. Election campaign bus is one crazy ride

T

he campaign trail... how do I describe it to you? It’s exhausting, frustrating and a highly stage managed affair every step of the way. If you weren’t aware, each party organises campaign buses / planes to move the media around. It would be impossible to cover the campaign any other way. Tax payers don’t pay for it, the costs are split between the media organisations and it would cost an absolute fortune to do it any other way. Th is vital transport is never ready on time, each election it’s like the incumbent party surprise themselves by calling an election. That means for the better part of the fi rst week we’ve been flying on military aircraft, cargo planes, essentially the C-17 Globe Master and C-130 Hercules – yep the ones they carry troops to war in. For the fi rst week I’ve joined the Abbott circus. The Opposition Leader started with his familiar mantra, again promising to repeal the carbon tax, even going so far as to warn the department of Prime Minister and Cabinet that it would be his fir st order of business on day one of a

Coalition Government. It was an unorthodox start and perhaps a little boring. That was until day three, when Mr Abbott and his Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey announced a 1.5 per cent cut in company tax from 30 per cent to 28.5 per cent. The Coalition didn’t announce any new savings measures to pay for it. I’m not sure it will go down well with a cynical electorate already worried about the nation’s fina nces. It was more a message to the corporate community concerned about the cost of Tony Abbott’s Paid Parental Leave (PPL) scheme. Th is tax cut will even out any impost suffered by the top 3,200 companies saddled with the cost of the PPL. It’s likely to be the most expensive pledge of the campaign at a cost of at least $5 billion over the four years of the budget. Without specific savings measures announced along side it, I’m not sure the Coalition’s sales pitch to voters was the best one. On the other side, Kevin Rudd picked a fight with Rupert Murdoch after the The Daily Telegraph produced a front page headline calling on voters to ‘Kick this mob out’.

Mr Rudd used one of his campaign media conferences to take this swipe: “I think he has made it fairly clear through one of his newspapers that he doesn’t really like us and would like to give us the old heave-ho and get his mate Mr Abbott in”. Let’s not forget that in 2007 The Daily Telegraph endorsed Rudd over Howard. Special mention should also go to the Liberal candidate for Greenway, James Diaz. He wasn’t able to tell channel 10 reporter John Hill what the Coalition’s asylum seeker policies involve and he didn’t know that a levy on companies is being proposed to pay for the Paid Parental Leave scheme. Not a good look, especially as he brandished the ‘Real Solutions’ booklet for the cameras. All part of the rough and ready ride of an election campaign.

There’s a new Mayor in town School children take over Penrith Council as part of Local Government Week

I

CASSANDRA O'CONNOR

n a display of great maturity, 14 local school children took on the challenge of running the city for the evening. As part of Local Government Week celebrations, the students, from Years 5 and 6, took their seats at Penrith’s Council Chamber and debated the very important topics of ‘whether a theme park should be built in Penrith’ and ‘should some local parks be closed so others can be upgraded’. As is tradition, the Council meeting started with the singing of the national anthem, however, this year it was performed by student Emily Anderson, who impressed Council with her voice and debating skills. Junior Mayor, Chloe McSpadden, kept the debates in order with the help and guidance of Mayor, Mark Davies. The fi rst topic debated was the fate of Penrith’s parks, with several students citing that more parks reduce the travel time of local residents. On the other side, some students argued that less parks will result in less graffit i, and that money could be spent to upgrade the playgrounds and make them more accessible. Councillors also enjoyed the debate, with Cr Tricia Hitchen helping her junior counterpart Madelin Boulter introduce amendments to the debate. On the second topic of the theme park, students put up sophisticated arguments about the possible impact of noise

pollution, traffic and environmental impacts that a theme park would have. Those for the theme park said that it would boost local tourism.

There were a couple of chuckles when Cr Marcus Cornish’s junior counterpart, Will Edward Rowell, was quick to move several motions, not unlike his mentor.

After the meeting, Mayor Mark Davies congratulated the junior councillors on the great effort they had put in to the debates.

Libs face shuffle Davies, Bassett most impacted by redistribution

COUNCIL SNAPSHOT The community of Jordan Springs is expanding, with plans for a new chicken shop, sushi takeaway store and yoghurt kiosk to be built at 61-63 Water Gum Drive. Penrith City Council has had a win in the Land and Environment Court. A development application was lodged with Penrith City Council on May 25, 2012 seeking consent to demolish an existing two storey dwelling and construct a new building and use the ground level of that building as a 24-place child care centre and the upper level as a dwelling at 85 Warburton Crescent, Werrington County. The application was refused on December 20, 2012. The owner of the property decided to appeal the decision in the Land and Environment Court but Commissioner, Sue Morris, upheld Penrith Council’s decision to refuse consent to build the centre on August 2 of this year. The small house located at 14 Henry Street, Penrith, is set to be bulldozed to make way for a multi-million dollar development. Located in the heart of the Penrith CBD on a central piece of land, Penrith City Council has granted consent for the construction of a mixed-use seven storey development that contains basement car parking, ground floor commercial space and 29 residential apartments. The project is worth $6.33 million. Penrith Panthers has been given approval for its $1 million refurbishment works and alfresco terrace extension, as well as for its $1.7 million offic e building. St Marys is set to be the site of a new $14.7 million investment. Penrith Council has approved an application to demolish the retail building at 171 Queen Street that is St Marys Town Centre, to build a six-storey mixed use building comprising ground level retail, 35 residential apartments and a basement car park.

Double trouble as man is suspended from driving again: A man has been fine d $600 and disqualified from driving for a certain period of time after he appeared before Penrith Local Court this week. Whilst driving, the father of two was involved in an accident with another car and, thinking his car had not damaged the other, left without giving the owner of the other vehicle his particulars. Police discovered that the man had in fact been driving his vehicle whilst being the holder of a suspended licence. His licence had been suspended on May 8, 2012 and he was due to have it renewed earlier this week. The man appeared before the court pleading guilty to both driving a vehicle whilst his licence was suspended and not giving his particulars to the owner of the vehicle he damaged. He was convicted by the court for both offences. He was fi ned $400 and disqualified from driving for another 12 months for driving whilst suspended. For damaging the other vehicle and leaving without giving his particulars, the man was fi ned $200. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Serial offender caught again: A man appeared before Penrith Local Court this week after being charged by police for driving his vehicle whilst his licence was suspended. Early one morning, the St Marys man was driving his girlfriend to the railway station when he was pulled over by police and found to be the holder of a suspended licence. His licence had been previously suspended from February this year, to remain suspended through until November 20. The man told the court that on that particular morning, he was unable to get public transport and that the air temperature was too cold for him to walk. The court examined the man’s driving record and found it to be particularly unsatisfactory, given that he had been charged with seven speeding matters between July 2012 and January 2013. Despite the man’s need for a licence due to his profession, he was convicted by the court, fi ned $480 and disqualified from driving for the minimum period; another 12 months, which would come into effect on November 20, 2013. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Statistics cause concern over child restraints

N

KATHERINE TWEED

RMA Insurance and Kidsafe have teamed up to urge parents to keep their children’s safety in the car as their top priority. The safety of children is on the top of the agenda for many parents however new research conducted by NRMA has shown that many local parents may not be using child restraints correctly. According to the research, less than half of the state’s parents are confident of their knowledge of child restraint laws, one in 10 parents do not check or adjust their child’s harness before going for a drive and 40 per cent of parents have never had child restraints looked at by a professional. “Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of child deaths in NSW. We need to make sure child restraints are used correctly, or the safety of the child is compromised,” said Kidsafe NSW CEO, Christine Erskine. According to NRMA Insurance and Kidsafe, it is essential that parents choose, correctly fit and use the right restraint for their child; and that each time children are placed in the car, the restraint is checked and adjusted to fit correctly. Kingswood mother of 23-month-old Abigail and three-week-old Timothy, Raien McCracken, puts the safety of her children first. “I have always thought that having knowledge of child restraint laws is really

important. If an accident were to happen when you are travelling at high speeds, the consequences could be severe if my child restraints weren’t in place correctly,” she said. “Parents want to do the right thing and keep their children safe, but it can be challenging for them to install the

restraints themselves, or remember all the new child restraint laws.” NRMA and Kidsafe are encouraging parents to have their child restraints checked and installed by a professional. Information about child restraints is available through the Kidsafe website: www.kidsafensw.org.

national police operation has officers from across the country searching for the alleged killer of a man found beaten to death in Erskine Park 14 years ago. Operation Roam 2013 is a national operation led by Crime Stoppers aimed to promote the capture of wanted people. The launch of the operation has prompted NSW Police to again appeal for the assistance of the public in locating one of the state’s most wanted men, Brady Hamilton. The 45-year-old was arrested in January 2000 over the alleged murder of a 44-year-old man. It is alleged that Mr Hamilton was one of a number of people who were involved in the bashing murder of Peter Ledger, who was found dead at a home in Pictor Street, Erskine Park, on August 4, 1999. A fi rst instance warrant was issued for his arrest in 2001 however, he has been on the run since. If you have any information on his whereabouts, call police.

Finally! Road project begins

ranebrook residents will breathe a sigh of relief as construction fi nally starts on the dangerous Sherringham Road intersection with The Northern Road. Member for Lindsay, David Bradbury, announced last Friday that construction would begin immediately on the stretch of road between Borrowdale Way and Sherringham Road, which includes traffic signals at the notorious black spot. Mr Bradbury, who earlier this year said that he would start digging the upgrades himself in order to have them progressed faster, said he is pleased the intersection will fi nally be fixed. “The Federal Labor Government delivered $5 million in funding for major upgrades of The Northern Road to be undertaken, which includes the installation of traffic lights on the corner of Sherringham Road, he said. “After having secured the funding for this project several years ago, I am delighted to see these works commencing. The roadworks include dual lane carriageways with shoulders in each direction; an upgrade to both intersections and installation of traffic signals; concrete retaining walls along the western side of the upgrade; noise attenuation barriers (walls and earth mounds) on the western side; and installation of street lighting. Mr Bradbury said the roadworks, which were an election commitment, will significantly improve safety for motorists and decrease travel time for local residents.

selection of local schools and venues last week hosted a delegation of academics from Illinois State University interested in local Visual Art programs. The international exchange group travelled to Australia to research the diversity of approaches to teaching Visual Arts in NSW and on Thursday, August 1, met with staff and students from Caroline Chisholm College and St Dominic’s College.

In addition, they met with curatorial and educational staff from Penrith Regional Gallery. The local schools are two of only eight schools in Sydney selected to be part of the exchange program, which has been organised in conjunction with the Australian Catholic University and the NSW Visual Arts and Design Education Association. Dr Judith Briggs, who is leading the exchange group, hopes to use findings from the trip to introduce new teaching methods to Illinois Visual Arts teachers. “We were very impressed by the high

level of understanding about their art practice that was so clearly articulated by these Penrith students, Dr Briggs said last week. “The sophisticated standard of work and the strong connections to local resources have given us plenty of ideas to take home to share with our Illinois colleagues. If you’ve got a story to share, we’d love to hear about it! Expanding opportunities Northcott boosts its Penrith presence with new building in Belmore Street

H

CASSANDRA O'CONNOR

undreds of people living with disabilities in the Nepean area will have more access to important services as disability service provider Northcott continues to expand its presence in Penrith. Northcott recently opened a new building in Belmore Street, where it will be able to provide a range of services that were previously unavailable through the organisation. Amie Bakhteari, Northcott’s Nepean Day Programs Coordinator, said being in the new building means Northcott can now provide a new service known as Day Programs. “Th is gives people the chance to participate in individual and group activities such as music, community outings, voluntary work and learning skills activities among other things,” she said. Northcott in the previous premises could only run individual programs, however the new facility allows both services to be delivered. “People using the program will benefit in so many ways because it gives them the chance to meet other people with similar interests while having fun and developing new skills,” Ms Bakhteari said. Northcott Employment Service, dedicated to helping people with disabilities fi nd work, is also being run out of the new building. “We will also be starting up a new Transition to Work program in 2014, to

help school leavers with disabilities get the skills they need,” Ms Bakhteari said. Individual Day Programs Coordinator, Steve McGeachy, said that all the courses

offered by Northcott are tailored to the individual client. “The National Disability Insurance Scheme will not be a big change for us

because our services are already individualised, but when the scheme is implemented, there will be even greater choice,” he said.

Wake up call for your garden As the weather warms up, it’s time to get your green thumb into gear

I

CASSANDRA O'CONNOR

t’s time to wake up your garden! With the start of spring comes the perfect time to get back into your garden and reinvigorate it after months of hibernation. Garden guru Adam Woodhams has some top tips to coax your garden and lawn out of their slumber to look great for the warmer season. “Spring is the right time for planting just about anything in the garden,” he said. “And there are some key things to consider to ensure you get the best results.” When planting, Mr Woodhams says you should dig a hole at least twice as wide as the pot size, soak your plant well before planting, and then water it in well. “And to give your plants a real head start, apply a bio-fertilizer after planting,” he added. It’s also crucial to keep a close watch on moisture levels in the garden and lawn at this time. “The spring growth surge, especially in the flowering plants, can really suck moisture out of the soil. Although things might not have warmed up much, the garden can still dry out quickly, so make sure you water as required or adjust the settings of your watering system to suit.” As plants of every size and shape start to push out new growth hungry bugs will come calling. Keep a close watch for any pests such as aphids on new growth and treat them early with a suitable insecticide

such as a pyrethrum-based spray or vegetable-based horticultural spray oil. After you’ve fertilised your garden, apply mulch. It will keep your garden looking at its best as we head into the summer months by helping it to retain moisture, suppress weeds and insulate the soil from high temperatures. Just ensure you apply your mulch at least 40mm thick and that you don’t push it up against trunks or stems. Winter and spring flowering shrubs such as camellias and azaleas will reward you with bushy, dense foliage and an abundance of blooms next year if you give them a light prune once they’ve fin ished flower ing. Spring’s also the perfect time to lavish extra attention on some of your garden’s real star performers. Make sure your roses have been well fed, and if you forgot to prune them over winter it’s not too late to give them a light prune now. Dead spots around the edges of your lawn can often result from over-hanging branches or shrubs shading out the lawn. Prune back from the bottom up in order to lift the canopy until you’ve cut back the amount required. You can also simply fi x dead spots in the lawn by cutting out the affected turf, turning the soil over, or adding some new turf underlay soil and then laying new turf rolls or spreading lawn seed. Just make sure you keep the area suitably moist and don’t mow until it’s well established. Keep an eye out for lawn weeds. Removing them early will save you a headache come mid-summer.

Get ready, because it’s time to wake up your garden and prepare for the warmer months ahead.

The best way to prevent weeds is to keep your lawn healthy through feeding and mowing at the correct height, not scalping your lawn.

Just remember, once the weather warms up, chances are it’s not just your lawn that’s been asleep; your mower probably hasn’t been fi red-up for a few months.

Collectables are Fair game: Massive event at Penrith Panthers next weekend

Penrith Panthers Exhibition Marquee

BUSINESS OF THE WEEK

F

ollowing on from the incredible success of the 2009 and 2011 Collectables Fairs at Penrith Panthers, the Sydney Antique Bottle and Collectables Club has decided to do it all over again next weekend, Saturday, August 17 and Sunday, August 18. The 2011 show set a number of records for Sydney, and possibly Australia, with 135 competitive displays of rare collections, in addition to 1,100 feet of

Swap and Sell, 209 traders and exhibitors and 2,500 people through the door. Their previous Fairs in 2009 and 2011 have resulted in donations in excess of $11,000 to the Nepean District Historical Society to help with their great work at the Arms of Australia Museum located in Emu Plains. In 2013 the ABCCCS will again be supporting the Nepean District Historical Society. Th is year the Fair will incorporate the NSW State Antique Bottle and Collectables

Show with collectors from across NSW bringing in their treasures for display. Th is will be one of the very few opportunities the people of Sydney and NSW will get to see rare items from Australia’s past – most of which would never generally see the light of day. The Fair also promises to have plenty of opportunities for the novice or hardcore collector to mix it with dealers from around NSW as well as opportunities to pick up all those little items you never

knew you needed (but can’t live without). Mark it in your calendar – Saturday, August 17 and Sunday, August 18 at the Penrith Panthers Exhibition Marquee for the huge Antique and Collectables Fair. It’s Australia’s biggest annual Antiques and Collectables Fair, organised by collectors for buyers, sellers and the curious. It’s open from 9am to 5pm. Tickets are $5 for adults and free for kids.

Making exceptions

ll communities across Australia rely heavily on the Federal Government to fund a range of local and regional initiatives for fostering local and regional economic growth including funding for infrastructure development to support such growth. Most local communities are best placed to decide what their strengths are and where resources directed by the Commonwealth will bring about structural change and encourage business to invest. There is a special focus on cities such as Penrith which will be unfairly burdened by the pressures of population growth. In this context, PBA strongly supports the call by “The Urban Coalition” for a plan for a “New Deal for Urban Australia”. The Plan calls for direct intervention by the Federal Government to ensure quality strategic planning for the future of our Cities. It further calls for leadership and investment and recommends the establishment of an Urban Infrastructure Fund (UIF) to meet a backlog of some $500 billion in infrastructure needs for Australian cities. The Urban Coalition’s call for a stronger role for Infrastructure Australia and the establishment of the Department of Cities and Urban Development to support the UIF is also strongly supported by the PBA. However, in the current environment of signific ant fiscal austerity and restraint the demand for resources will need to demonstrate very clear outcomes that reflect key national priorities.

re you familiar with the saying ‘rules were meant to be broken’? When dealing with customers, this is particularly pertinent. While procedures are important for protecting your profits and business interests, you should also factor in flexibility. Recently, one of my children was being taken to his sport lesson by his grandparents. I realised that fees were due that day and knew that this business is quite strict about fees being paid on time (which is a reasonable expectation). But because I was not going to be there to pay, had no cash and didn’t want his grandparents to pay, I called them to ask if I could pay next week. They said ‘no, fees must be paid on the due date’. I explained the situation and that we had been attending the centre for eight years, but there was no compromise. In the words of the receptionist, ‘if we make an exception for you, we have to make it for everyone’. But that is where I disagree with her. There are a few reasons when exceptions can be made and rules can be broken, including: • To reward loyalty • Where it is clearly a ‘once off ’ or emergency situation • To foster and encourage future business Rigidly sticking to ‘the rule book’ gives your customers the impression that you don’t care about their interests. There will always be people who will be dishonest or try to ‘work the system’, but the vast majority of your customers will be grateful.

Credibility

C

redibility is an important factor when trying to establish relationships with new customers. People need to be convinced that your business is good at what it does and that their purchase is safe. Using testimonials are an excellent way to build credibility, but another equally credible tool is winning an award. Apart from the satisfaction at being acknowledged as a business leader or leading business in your industry, you can also leverage it for years to come in your favour. The majority of businesses never bother to enter competitions, either because it’s too time consuming to fi ll out the applications, or because they feel that they have no chance of winning. I believe it’s worth the time it takes to complete an application. It’s almost like a series of snapshots of your business, showing how it has grown, what you have achieved and what your plans are for the future. If you are fortunate enough to win an award, make sure that you tell everyone about it. Write a press release, let your customers know, put a sign up at your premises, announce the award on your website and social media profi les and mention it on all your promotional material. Don’t be discouraged if you enter a few and don’t win. Each submission is easier, and I believe the more times you enter, the more chance you have of winning. There aren’t too many more rewarding things than having some recognition on your wall for all to see.

Big investment in seniors Emu Plains site sold, but residents assured it’s business as usual

$10 million investment by seniors housing giant, Ingenia Communities is set to bring affordable housing opportunities to Penrith seniors. Just last week, the company announced the acquisition of Nepean River Holiday Village, a manufactured seniors housing and tourism park operating in Emu Plains. It was Penrith’s growing population of over 55’s that convinced the company to invest in the area. “After a significant amount of research, we identified Penrith as a significant and growing settlement for seniors,” said Ingenia Communities Chief Executive Officer, Simon Owen. “50,000 people aged 55 and above live in the Penrith area and in the next five years that is expected to grow significantly.” Mr Owen said that despite the large population of seniors, there is a huge gap in affordable housing opportunities in Penrith, a gap that Ingenia hope to fil l. “One of the primary reasons Ingenia acquired the park is that it gives us a great opportunity to add additional and affordable seniors housing,” he said. “The average property in the Penrith and Emu Plains area can be bought for around $400,000. If we can provide quality housing in the area for $275,000 to $300,000, it is very attractive to seniors.” The site currently contains 101 manufactured homes, 59 tourist cabins, four camping sites and a large area of

vacant land however, Ingenia are hoping to build another 26 manufactured homes in the park whilst upgrading existing facilities. “In the next couple of years, Ingenia are looking to invest several million dollars into the site. It will create more work for local trades people and more employment

opportunities,” Mr Owen said. Other than future constructions, seniors currently living in Nepean River Holiday Village will experience very little change; existing contracts will be transferred to Ingenia Communities without additional costs or hassle. Nepean River Holiday Village is the

fi rst of many opportunities that Ingenia Communities have been exploring in the local area. “We are assessing some other opportunities in the Penrith area. It is quite possible that we could be moving forward in the next six to 12 months,” Mr Owen said.

SENIOR LIVING

by Tim Reid

Imagine a world without factory farming...

Spending and budgeting as a retiree

R

etiring from work means you no longer have to face the daily grind; your time is your own and you have the luxury of being able to do what you want, when you want to. However, one limiting factor during retirement can be money. It’s important to adjust your spending habits to ensure you get the most out of your later years. While some of your expenses will decrease (most commonly petrol, public transport/parking, clothing) some will increase (likely your health costs, insurance, entertainment). It is important to remember that fi nances are seldom constant throughout retirement. Interest, tax and inflat ion rates vary over time and you may face unexpected expenses such as home or car repairs, fi xing or replacing appliances or large medical bills. There is something you have control over, and that is your spending. Working with a budget is a smart approach to retirement planning. If your spending level can’t be safely maintained, it may be worth delaying retirement. To do that, you should put together a retirement budget ahead of your retirement. There are plenty of websites that can help you work out what you’ll need to maintain your lifestyle. The Federal Government’s Money Smart website, www.moneysmart.gov.

Watch the film. Sign the pledge. Inspire others.

au is a good source. You can also speak to local retirement living experts such as the team at Rochford Place in Ropes Crossing. It’s critical to keep inflation in mind. The size of your retirement spending budget will typically increase each year because of inflation. The inflation rate for the last 10 years has been 2.75 per cent on average so ensure you include that in your calculations. Finally – enjoy! You’ve got some wonderful years of freedom, travel and leisure ahead of you! Quick tips to save cash 1. Shop online. Quite often you can fi nd a brand that you know and love online for a fraction of the price. 2. Use your age to your advantage. Don’t be shy to ask about discounts. 3. Allow choices. It’s okay to have a takeaway skim latte and a glass of expensive wine, but perhaps not both on the same day. Th is way you’re less likely to rebel and buy something costly that you don’t necessarily need. 4. Use public transport and get involved in local community activities – these are often free of charge and a great way to meet new people. 5. Look after yourself. Keeping fit and healthy is the best investment you can make – it’ll keep your medical expenses down later in life.

reastfeeding mothers from all over the local area came together this week to support each other as part of World Breastfeeding Week. World Breastfeeding Week, August 1 to August 7, provides an opportunity for mums to spread the word about the benefits of breastfeeding children but this year, the focus was placed on mother to mother support. Mothers often begin to breastfeed their children from birth but in the weeks and months after, breastfeeding mums come across many barriers inhibiting them from continuing. These barriers come in many different forms and sometimes stop mums from breastfeeding altogether. However, support from peers, partners and

family can help mums overcome these barriers. Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) Hawkesbury/Nepean member, Jess Whittick was breastfeeding her fi rstborn at a playgroup when she was asked to stop for the benefit of a male staff member. “It really felt like we were being told off, but it is a perfectly natural thing. I was lucky enough to have another woman to support me, which made it seem much better,” she said. “Sometimes breastfeeding is not seen as the normal or natural thing to do. Getting together and joining ABA you get to be with mothers who are also breastfeeding. It gives you the support you sometimes need.” Glenmore Park mum, Nicole Bridges, has been a breastfeeding counsellor and

community educator with the ABA for 11 years. “Mothers have better outcomes from their breastfeeding when they are supported by peers,” she said. “We never tell each other what to do but we give advice and tips – it empowers women to make their own decisions and gives them a real sense of confidence. “It all seems too hard when you have barriers in place. You need community support, the support of family, friends and peers.” The World Health Organisation recommends that women breastfeed their children exclusively for the fi rst six months and then combine breastfeeding with appropriate foods for two years. - Katherine Tweed

Benefits of breastfeeding

W

e all know that breastfeeding is a much healthier option for your baby. Unfortunately some mothers only fi nd out the hard way that breastfeeding can be quite hard to figure out! Mothers should never be afraid to seek help with getting started feeding properly. If you don’t get the help you need at fi rst, maybe because of a rushed hospital stay or someone telling you, “you probably can’t breastfeed”, there are other ways to learn how. The best advice would be to educate yourself and your partner all about it antenatally and have your support systems ready for if they are needed after the birth. You will fi nd good support from the Australian Breastfeeding Association, Midwives and Lactation Consultants and talk to all your friends and family who have successfully breastfed in the past. Just recently there was another study adding to the benefits, this time for you as mum. Mothers who breastfeed their children may have a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. The report, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, suggests a link to do with certain biological effects of breastfeeding and that longer periods of breastfeeding lowered the overall risk of getting the disease. Previous studies have established that breastfeeding can reduce a mother’s risk of other diseases but until now little has been done to examine the impact of breastfeeding duration on Alzheimer’s risk. Observers in this study however, saw a highly significant and consistent correlation between breastfeeding and Alzheimer’s. One possible reason is that breastfeeding increases a woman’s glucose tolerance by restoring her insulin sensitivity after pregnancy. At any rate, the benefits of breastfeeding are many!

Functional movement

T

his week Shane Richards has written for us with his usual enthusiasm and good advice:

You couldn’t spend five minutes in a gym without hearing the words, functional movement (FM). It seems every single trainer these days are telling us the importance of functional movements. But what is functional movement and why do we need it? Firstly, functional movement can be different for many people. Young, old, job and environmental differences are just some reasons why FM can be so varied. Take for example your stay at home parent. The y will have a lot of “tasks” to complete in a typical day. So, movements they do in the gym should help them to complete these duties with ease. Then, you have someone who spends a lot of time in a job where they experience ‘death by chair’. These two people need plenty of ‘functional movements’ in their training to help balance out their very different days. Stretching and strengthening programs should be well constructed to either; provide stimulus to muscle groups that are dormant and weaker; and help to strengthen or stretch muscles and joints that are used throughout the day. In short, FM is extremely important due to one major factor. We all have different needs and functions therefore different movement requirements. Is it needed? Well this is simple. YES! We need it to have confidence in our ability to complete simple and challenging life tasks. Stay functional, people!

The humble overalls

Y

ou would never normally see them unless you spend plenty of time with farmers, children and the odd plumber but if next season’s top trend predictions are correct, you’ll be seeing much more of the humble dungarees. Since the fashion industry has decided that it is time to say goodbye to winter fashions, we all have to prepare ourselves for a new season full of new trends. For spring, one of the in-between seasons, it is important that each new trend can cope with any kind of weather and all temperatures. Way back in the 1700’s, dungarees, otherwise known as overalls, were used by men to cover their clothes as they worked. They were never seen as fashionable, just functional and durable garments. In the 1960’s and 70’s they emerged as one of the top fashion trends of the time; think baggy, washed out denim worn over bright t-shirts on women with long wavy hair and round rimmed sunglasses. They were forgotten after the reign of the hippies but now, they are back on the radar once again. Dungarees are the perfect in-between season garment; they cover anything, can be worn with anything, can be dressed up or down and allow an outfit to be easily modified to suit unpredictable weather. Although this very interesting and dare I say, useful garment has never been flattering, it sure is perfect for the upcoming season and it appears as though I am not the only one who thinks it. And there is one particular style taking hold. Short, not mini, skirt dungarees, the kind I wore when I was only just walking, are going to be extremely popular this coming season. Look out for floral prints, often in pastel colours, however, take some time to think about what you wear underneath!

NATURAL THERAPIES by John Miller-Crispe

Staying well or getting better?

S

omething came up recently that made me realise that most people do not think about health until they are sick. Now you may say: “What’s wrong with that?” Well the problem is that getting someone better is a lot harder than keeping them well. The other aspect of this is that most people go to the practitioner who seems to be the cheapest – usually the doctor – and expect that person to get them well at no cost. Unfortunately this rarely happens. Firstly doctors have a limited arsenal when it comes to getting people well. Their main training and expertise is in managing symptoms (which they are trained to see as diseases). Symptoms versus disease From a medical standpoint symptoms are diseases. From a naturopathic perspective symptoms are the body’s cry for help. They are your body’s way of letting you know that something needs fi xing, but they are not a disease, they are the end result of a disease. There is a cause (the true disease) for every set of symptoms. Treating symptoms will rarely cure what is wrong with you. If you want to be truly well you need to fi nd out what is going wrong in your body. Certainly there may well be a need to relieve the symptoms while the true treatment is being done, but simply treating the symptoms without treating the cause does not make any sense. Make it your goal to be truly well Prevention is always the best option. Absence of symptoms is not true wellness. True wellness means that you are the best you can possibly be. More and more people are turning to natural health practitioners to help them to have a longer, healthier and more vital life. Take your health into your own hands; after all it is your body and your life. Get the best out of your remaining years.

Urinary tract infections

Sammy Skates the Wonderdog

uring winter, painful Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) become more common so it’s important to know a little about them and how they can be avoided. Fortunately, in most cases, relief is easy to fi nd and treatment fast. Urinary tract infections are the second most common infection in the general population, though women are much more likely to have one than men. Diabetics, men with prostate problems and the elderly are also at a higher risk of these infections. Symptoms include a burning sensation when passing urine, the urge to go to the bathroom frequently, cloudy urine or lower abdominal pain. Causes can be hard to pinpoint, but it’s important to maintain good hygiene habits and make sure to use the bathroom after sexual activity. Some people will fi nd they are having regular infections, and if this is the case, see your doctor. You may need medication to completely clear the infection, or look at ways to help guard against them. One of the simplest ways to avoid UTIs is to drink plenty of water. Th is helps to make sure that any bacteria in the urinary tract and bladder is ‘flushed out’. The colder winter months mean we generally drink less and without this regular ‘flushing’, explains why the infections are more common. There’s some great products available to relieve UTIs and they can also help prevent them. Ural are powder sachets that you mix with water and drink. It helps relieve the burning sensations quickly and flush out the bacteria. They are relatively inexpensive, and I recommend them when a customer wants fast relief.

good friend was telling me about Connor the Cocker Spaniel puppy the other day and how wonderful he was with her son. It made me think about my fi rst dog who was also a Cocker Spaniel and the lessons he taught me. Sammy came into our family when I was eight-yearsold. He was called Sammy by me but my roller skate crazy older sister called him Skates. I still remember the day when we all went to pick him out of a litter, a bundle of fluff. He stayed with our family for the next 15 years and passed peacefully when I was in my fi nal years of university. The benefits of owning a pet are very well documented. They make us physically and mentally healthier. Just the presence of our pets can lift out spirits and help us relax. Pets are great caregivers. They keep us company when we are sick or feeling down. They can make us feel safe while we are at home alone and keep an eye on the place when we are out. Dogs especially help us get outside and exercise. They also help us to meet people in the community, especially other dog owners, and make great conversation starters. Research has shown that pet owners are generally healthier and happier than non pet-owners. They have lower blood pressure and cholesterol, are less depressed, at lower risk of heart disease, feel less lonely and fi nd it easier to get to know people. Pet owners have less trips to the doctor’s. Sammy was a great dog. He always knew when I got off the bus from school and was waiting at the gate as I walked up the driveway. We had a few childhood adventures together that included a broken arm which taught me walking a dog and roller skating don’t mix. The joy of having a pet isn’t new to most Australians but it is well worth reflecting on.

Corolla on top: Toyota thrilled as cars drive out the door

T

oyota Corolla has extended its lead as Australia’s best-selling car with a market-topping performance in July, according to official new-vehicle sales fig ures released this week. Almost 25,000 Australians have bought a Corolla so far this year – an increase of 13.2 per cent over the same period in 2012. Toyota dealers delivered close to 4,000 Corolla hatches and sedans last month, taking the popular family car further ahead of its nearest sales rival – which is another Toyota.

HiLux retained second place on the podium with its 2013 tally approaching 23,700 sales including almost 3,000 registrations in July. Overall sales for Toyota so far this year have clicked past 123,500 – or more than double those of its nearest rival. Toyota Australia executive director sales and marketing, Tony Cramb said the company would continue to monitor the impact on sales of the Fringe Benefit Tax (FBT) proposal. “We have already experienced customers holding back from placing new orders...” he said.

Giant relief after first victory Smiles all-round as GWS soars to big win over Demons in the AFL

N

NATHAN TAYLOR

ot many would’ve believed it after the horror season they’ve had, but the GWS Giants have fi nally got the monkey off their back, winning their fi rst game of the year last Saturday. It took an incredible 364 days for the Giants to taste victory once again after they clobbered, yes clobbered, the Melbourne Demons at SKODA Stadium 124-87. After some positive recent performances, the Giants went into the match as slight favourites against the Demons, who are sitting just one spot above them on the bottom of the AFL ladder. Outgoing Giants coach Kevin Sheedy said the win means a lot to the fans and the club. “For the club and the players it was really important because these boys worked hard,” he said after the game. “They are developing into a really good side. These last three or four weeks are very important learning curves for our players.” After falling away numerous times in the fi nal quarter over the past month, Sheedy believed the key to the 37-point win was commitment right to the very end. “We were very committed to playing the entire 120 minutes and we had our best ever last quarter,” he said. “We started to see some resilience and effort by the players, and you knew they

were feeling more comfortable out there in the trenches. “I think we’re a more attractive side to watch this year than last year even though we’ve copped some of the biggest beltings.” 20-year-old Giants midfielder Devon Smith, who kicked three goals in the

match, said it was a “great feeling” to fi nally win. “I think some guys stood up in the last quarter like our captain Callan Ward, some of his acts are just inspirational. We’ve got a taste for it now and we want to get more,” he said. Sheedy said the win wasn’t a turning

point in his side’s season but “the start of a long curve”. “It won’t be our only win this season… I’m a believer,” he said. The Giants will be looking for win number two when they travel to Perth this weekend to take on Fremantle on Sunday afternoon.

The 2013 Major Singles Champion at Wallacia Women’s Bowling Club is Sue Ashurst who defeated Kerrie Quinn in the fi nal. The 2013 and the Minor Singles Champion is Jane Sullivan who defeated Lila Samin. The Men’s Minor Pairs winners at Wallacia were Vito Carnevale and Eris Shiels defeating Beau Pallister and Brian Gartner. At Blacktown City, the Triples Champions are Les Serle, Shaun Collier and Russell Murphy who defeated Stephen Cross, Joe Bigini and Greg Hornby. Congratulations to Jackie Lewis who was recently elected as the President of the Glenbrook Panthers Ladies Bowling Club. Her fi rst big day was the Nancy Dawe Day.

The catering, match selection, trading table, 100 board, and the raffle table run by Helen Tracey and Vice President Pat Harvey made this a most successful day. Picton (Zone 5) made it to the semi fi nals of the State Pennants. The Finals were; in Grade 1 Taren Point defeated Belrose, Grade 2 Harbord defeated Bulli, Grade 3 Revesby Workers defeated Taren Point, Grade 4 Grafton defeated Scone, Grade 5 Goodooga defeated Soldiers Point, Grade 6 Fairy Meadow defeated Grafton and in Grade 7 Lightning Ridge defeated Figtree RSL. There are many bowlers, too many to name, all having a battle with their health at the moment, we wish them all a quick recovery and hope they are back on the greens shortly.

and the backmarker off 30m Bartowski at $2.90 began well for driver Blake Fitzpatrick and after racing midfield made his move and staged an exciting fi nish to just beat Hes Magic Red. Jim Douglas drove his second winner with Major Works ($9.90) in the fourth. Flite of the Concords ($3.20) driven by Mat Rue improved on his second placing last week and after making a run three wide from the 600m he got up to beat Bye Bye Sir who had a soft run behind the leader in the fi fth race. Epirus Boy ($3.50) worked hard to lead in race six and had to withstand pressure from the favourite Apollo Th irteen before running out a winner for Peter Rixon. Short priced Ideal Legacy ($1.50) driven by Michael Muscat was much too good in the last.

Michelle Ribeiro

They fi nally did it! The Giants won their fi rst game of 2013 against a very disappointing Melbourne side. In front of their home crowd at Skoda Stadium, the Giants went into their fi rst game as favourites and they didn’t let anyone down. It was a stunning Saturday afternoon in Sydney, the Giants led for most of the match, but in the end were simply the better team. Co-captain Callum Ward was outstanding, kicking four goals and gathering 31 possessions. One goal in the fi nal term came from a courageous mark between two Melbourne players. He was supported by Treloar (30 possessions), Scully (29 possessions) and Whitfield, two goals and 26 possessions.

Jeremy Cameron was once again a star up forward, kicking four goals himself. Devon Smith kicked three fi nal quarter goals to put the result beyond doubt. Th is week the Giants make the big trek to Patterson Stadium in Perth, to take on fi nals fancies Fremantle on Sunday. Fremantle are looking to cement their top four position to give them the double chance in the fin als. Hopefully, GWS are buoyed by their form against Melbourne last week, and go over to WA with confidence they can take on the top teams in the league. Fremantle are a team riding high at the moment and only seem to be getting better. If nothing else, the young Giants will learn a lot from playing the Dockers this week.

NATHAN TAYLOR

The Penrith Emus were thrashed by Manly last weekend. Photo: Nardia Sly.

“They were a class outfit,” Tu’ipulotu said. “They had Wallabies player Michael Hooper there as well as few Super Rugby players, which makes a difference. “The effort for the boys to keep going and plug away was great. The cattle that I have playing are playing way above their

weight and I can’t ask much more from these guys.” One act of bravery out of the match was from 22-year-old Penrith prop Sione Matanti, who broke his nose in the fir st 15 minutes of the match and continued playing for the rest of the game. Th is Saturday afternoon at Nepean

Rugby Park, the Emus play their fin al home game of the year against West Harbour at 3pm. The game will be dedicated to flanker Leo Burgess, who will play his last home game for the Emus before taking up a contract in France. “The boys will give it their all especially at home,” Tu’ipulotu said.

With just two games remaining against West Harbour and Parramatta, the Emus are running out of time but are still hopeful of producing a miracle win for their fans. “The boys still have a little bit left in them… they’re looking forward to these next two games,” Emus coach Sateki Tu’ipulotu said. “These two games are still winnable. Hopefully we can get that win to fi nish off the season.” Even if they don’t manage to pull off that much-needed win, Tu’ipulotu believes the season could still be regarded as a success due to the many challenges and obstacles they faced. “Out of all the clubs in the Shield, we have an average player age of 22, these guys wouldn’t have played fi rst grade anywhere else,” he said. “What I’ve done is given them some experience in fi rst grade and they’ll be the better for it next year.” Last Saturday the Emus were again flogged, this time by the Manly Marlins 71-12. But with a team made up of Wallaby and Super 15 representative players, the result was somewhat expected.

Local youngsters head overseas for major Baseball Championships NATHAN TAYLOR

G

etting to play your favourite sport at your own local ground every week is one thing, but getting to play it overseas against some of the world’s best nations is another. 12-year-old Billy Oldfield and 11-yearold Aaron Riley will experience just that when they represent NSW at the South East Asia U13 Baseball Championships in Singapore this October. The NSW U13’s team is the only Australian team represented at the Championships where they will play against some of Asian baseball’s best countries including Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Taiwan. Th is will be the fi rst overseas baseball trip for the boys. “It will be cool to play against other countries in front of big crowd,” Aaron said. The boys are yet to brush up on their Singapore knowledge but do know a few interesting facts about the popular travel destination. “I don’t know too much about Singapore except that you can’t chew gum or spit,” Billy said. “We might be going to Singapore Zoo and Universal Studios whilst we’re over there, which will be fun,” Aaron added. Billy and Aaron were the only Penrith players selected in the NSW side after recent trials involving other clubs around

the Sydney metropolitan region. The pair didn’t expect to get in but are mighty glad they did. “I’ve been playing baseball for two years

and just love the enjoyment of the game as well as meeting new people,” Aaron said. “I’ve been playing for six years because it’s just so fun,” Billy added.

Tough ride: From two broken hands to international victory

AROUND THE GROUNDS Basketball: The Penrith Panthers men’s Waratah Championship League side are back in Finals contention after their double header last weekend. The Panthers lost their fi rst game to the Sydney Comets 70-59 but in the second game were much more dominant, coming out on top 81-57 over Central Coast. Louis Brandt was the star of the show across the two games, scoring 35 points and 29 boards. Meanwhile, Penrith’s women’s side continue their losing streak, going down to the Comets 59-47. Kallie Hovatter was Penrith’s best with 12 points and 6 boards. Th is Saturday both sides take on the Maitland Mustangs at Maitland Federation Centre. AFL: The Penrith Rams division one side have now lost four straight games, this time at the hands of the secondplaced Holroyd Parramatta Goannas 82-76. Standouts for the Rams include their top goal scorer James Delvin (3), Joshua Shephard and George Paneras. The 6-point defeat sees the Rams drop to seventh position. Th is Saturday the Rams meet the eighth-placed Macquarie University at Greygums Oval. Ice Hockey: The Penrith Phantoms have returned from a week off to go down 4-1 to the competition-leading Norwest Emperors.

“It was a good game but three simple mistakes led to three of their goals. Take those away and it’s a 1-1 game,” Phantoms captain George Kozumplik admitted. The Phantoms will again play Norwest this Sunday at Penrith Ice Palace. Cricket: Penrith Cricket Club will host the North Hobart Cricket Club as part of their pre-season tour of Sydney. The current club of ex-Panther and Australian star Jordan Silk, the Devils will be arriving in Penrith on Friday, September 6 where they’ll enjoy a BBQ and meet and greet at Howell Oval. Penrith and North Hobart will play two matches across the weekend – a T20 match on Saturday, September 7, followed by a 50 over match on Sunday, September 8. Spectators are welcome to attend. Netball: Local netball sensation and Sydney Swifts star Paige Hadley has been named to debut for the Australian Diamonds during a two-Test series against Malawi next month. Hadley is one of only 12 players selected to take on the tiny African nation. We wish Paige luck!

n the lead up to the biggest event of his young career, 13-year-old BMX rider Kyle Jaehne broke both his hands in separate accidents, almost derailing his chances of competing at the BMX World Championships in Auckland. Fortunately, the Cranebrook resident managed to recover just in time to become the number one Australian and overall fourth best BMX rider in the world for his age group. “I didn’t expect to do that well…

the competition was tough especially because the tracks over in New Zealand were different to the ones we have at home,” Jaehne said. The Year 8 St Paul’s Grammar School student said the custom built track was unlike anything he had ever raced on before. “Their jumps are 9m long and start is 8m high. I knew it would be like that but you couldn’t train for it beforehand, you just had to go with it.” Next up for the Penrith BMX rider is the NSW Championships at Lake Macquarie this October.

Sporty Kids for 3-5 year olds gives your kids a great start in life A recent study conducted by Dr Hardy of Sydney University discovered that Australian school aged children lacked basic fundamental movement skills. This meant they were less likely to play sports in later life, and added to being overweight or obese according Dr Hardy. Sporty Kids Nepean District Tennis Association has recently introduced a brand new

gross motor skills program for 3-5 year olds at their Woodriff Gardens home in the centre of Penrith. “Sporty kids is a fun based program, giving your child the opportunity to participate in team play and learn key skills for a wide range of sports in an active safe environment” says CEO Chris Woodland.

Tennis Australia qualified coach and Sporty Kids co-ordinator Carey Sinden added “the kids have great fun, and are learning basic coordination and balance skills at the same time” “Sporty kids has been a great success in Penrith, the kids and coaches have a great time, and the kids improve really quickly” she said. The program has been approved by Penrith City Council, and will soon be promoted through a host of local long day care centres and preschools. Sporty Kids classes are about to start again for the new year, with vacancies available on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. here’s a reason people call this man Jason ‘Determination’ Hooper, and you’ll soon fi nd out why. The 46-year-old was born with the extremely rare Apert Syndrome, which is a congenital disorder characterised by malformations to the skull, face, hands and feet. Hooper was born with deformed hands and feet, and only has one toe on his right foot but that hasn’t stopped him from carving out a very successful sporting career across multiple sports. Hooper began his sporting career as a runner, which he did for a decade before his ankles gave way. “My friend said ‘you know how to swim boofhead, go and swim,” Hooper said. “So I went to learn to swim at Ripples in St Marys and haven’t looked back. Swimming’s a great sport and it’s not as tough on your body as running.” Hooper has been swimming since 2000 and is currently in training for his fin al appearance at the Australian Masters Games

in Melbourne this October, where he’ll be swimming the 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m. “Th is will be my fourth Australian Masters Games… I have won 21 gold over the previous three,” Hooper boasted. “I’m fairly confident I’ll do well at this one too. I currently train six days a week at Penrith Pools and North Sydney Pools.” Even though Hooper is a huge inspiration to many, it’s quite surprising to hear that he often gets picked on by other athletes and members of the public for no apparent reason. The good thing for Hooper is that he uses these criticisms to fuel his desire to perform better. “When people say negative things to me I don’t fi re back, I say ‘okay thanks for that’. Then on race day if I’m just getting beat I think of that negative and I just power on,” Hooper said. Hooper isn’t sure whether he’ll continue swimming after the Australian Masters in October or make another sporting switch – this time to boxing. He also plans on becoming an ambassador for young disabled kids, so they grow up with the same attitude and resolve as him.
