hen a Triple Zero operator asked if mother Kelly McLean was awake, the little voice on the other end of the phone answered “no”. It was the voice of seven-year-old Isabelle McLean who along with her sister Mia has been praised for her quick action in seeking assistance for their mother, who had collapsed at their Penrith home. The incredible audio of the Triple Zero call shows just how brave and calm the sisters were during the ordeal. Full story on » p. 10

Our plastic bag obsession is costing our environment dearly, but opinions remain split on a ban DALE DRINKWATER
@daledrinkwater
lastic bags are made from nonrenewable resources such as crude oil, gas and coal – and Australians are using over 10 million new ones a day. But is it necessary to use plastic bags, and should we reconsider whether they should be freely given out at every supermarket and store across the state? An Omnipoll survey of 4929 NSW residents conducted in July, showed that 64 per cent of us don’t think it’s necessary and want a statewide ban on plastic bags. Sjirk Bangma from Plastic Bag Free NSW, agrees with the results and said there should be immediate full-scale action to fighting plastic pollution. “The level of convenience we have built into our daily lives has destructive side effects,” she said. “A ban of the plastic bag will put every NSW citizen in touch with the question of why plastic is becoming such a permanent problem in our marine environment on a daily basis.” Plastic bags are already banned in South Australia and the Northern Territory, and the poll showed 81 per cent of the public still support the measure. Jeff Angel, Convenor and Director of the
P
Should plastic bags be banned in Penrith? Christine, Cambridge Gardens – NO “I’m worried for single mums, if plastic bags are banned, what are they going to carry their stuff in? If they do it, they need to come up with an alternative, like paper bags that can be recycled, with a handle so mothers can put the bag on the side of their pram.”
Keira, Springwood – YES “I use reusable bags already, I just leave them in my car. If I have to run in at the last minute and grab something I chuck everything in my handbag, or if it’s a carton of milk, you can just grab it and carry it out.” Does she have a point? Have your say at www. facebook.com/westernweekender
Marcia, Cranebrook – YES “Most people, if they are a bit conscious of what’s happening in the community, would be in favour of that. The only issue would be if you only went in for half-a-dozen things and they would put a charge on bags. But I think people would start to adapt to that, it would just be a part of life.”
Pauline, Cranebrook – NO “It’s impractical for shoppers in a way. A lot of people need to do a little bit of shopping when they haven’t brought anything with them to carry stuff home in. If you did ban them it would force people to bring a bag.”
Sarah, Penrith – YES “I find the reusable bags better because, if you get something heavy in the plastic bags, they break. Reusable bags are more reliable and plastic bags are such a waste.” Do you agree with Sarah? Tweet your thoughts to us @wwpenrith
Dante, Penrith – YES “I don’t think plastic bags should be used at all. They’re not good for the environment, sure they’re cheaper, but it’s much better to look after the environment now than pay for the costs later on.” Agree? Email news@westernweekender.com.au.
Boomerang Alliance, said the 16.5 million plastic bags that enter the litter stream in NSW every year cause many issues. “Plastic bag litter is implicated in horrible
deaths for marine life and birds, it’s ugly, and because they are thrown away very quickly, are a waste of resources,” he said. Australians contribute 3.92 billion plastic
bags to the one trillion bags used and discarded of every year around the world. So, after 30 years of using plastic, is it time to ban the bag?

Could same sex marriage debate bring down a Prime Minister? Tony Abbott is losing his grip on power and his standing in the community is on shaky ground after his handling of the same sex marriage issue proved that he’s struggling to maintain a positive connection with the Australian people. I point out from the top that I am in no way suggesting Bill Shorten is a better alternative. Truth is there is very little to love about our political leaders at present. Talking of love, it seems that same sex marriage is set to be a defining issue over the next 12 months. This topic has constantly bubbled away in our federal political sphere over recent years but until now, it has never threatened to decide an election. On the back of the expenses scandal that Mr Abbott handled poorly, it was clear that he needed to come out of the latest round of the same sex marriage debate looking like a true leader with his troops proudly behind him. It hasn’t happened and Mr Abbott is in huge political trouble. I’ve written before that I am a supporter of same sex marriage. I personally think it’s ludicrous that in 2015 we don’t allow two consenting adults who love each other to get married. However, I’ve always maintained that those against changing our marriage laws in Australia are not evil monsters determined to ruin other people’s lives, and hence shouldn’t be battered from pillar to post. Their opinion is no more or less valid than somebody who supports making a change. That said, it seems that overwhelmingly there is support for a change to be made. From a political point of view I believe Mr Abbott has misread the feelings of the Australian people on this issue and has, over the last week, only drifted further away from public confidence. Take for example this comment last week: “I think I can say arising out of today is that if

you support the existing definition of marriage between a man and a woman, the Coalition is absolutely on your side but if you would like to see change at some time in the future, the Coalition is prepared to make that potentially possible, he said. In other words: “Maybe. The above comment is, in my opinion, an attempt to play both sides of the argument in the hope that the issue will simply be put on the backburner again and get out of the headlines. And what about these comments from the Prime Minister? “There was a strong view in the party room today that if we were to drop the policy, even if we were to adjust the policy to the extent of having a free vote, a lot of people who voted for us were going to feel dudded. OK, so are we now declaring that election promises and policies are rock solid, can’t and won’t be broken and are locked in concrete for a government’s full term? Hallelujah! Same sex marriage in Australia is inevitable. And I believe there is enormous potential for the man or woman who is Prime Minister at the time to be remembered in decades and centuries to come as somebody who led an historic and socially important change in this country. For Mr Abbott, that ship has sailed. Even if same sex marriage does pass under his leadership, we all know he would have been dragged kicking and screaming to give his stamp of approval. So where to from here? My gut tells me that the same sex marriage debate will not go away, and could very well haunt the rest of Mr Abbott’s leadership. The question is, how long will that leadership last? There is a school of thought that this issue could well be the catalyst for bringing down a Prime Minister. I tend to think that may well be the case. Enter Malcolm Turnbull.

Junior Councillor says local parks need improved safety and Wi-Fi access @daledrinkwater
utside of school hours, safer and more connected local parks are a top priority for Junior Councillor, Emily King. Just a few weeks into her role on Penrith’s Junior Council, Miss King has highlighted a few issues she wants fixed in our local parks. “I don’t think they’re safe or maintained,” she said. “Children are getting injured when they are going to the parks, they are meant to be safe for children to come and play, not to get injured. “I want people to come together to brainstorm ideas on how to make all of our parks safer.” Miss King said in order to encourage more adults to spend more time in local parks, she recommends providing a Wi-Fi service. “To attract more people to these ‘soonto-be-safer’ parks, we should provide free Wi-Fi in each park,” she said. “It will bring youth and parents to the parks who can do work here, and then the kids can come along to play.” Wi-Fi in local parks would be a huge expense but many Councils are starting to implement such technology.

Junior Councillor Emily King and Councillor Marcus Cornish at Jamison Park “Parks should always be accessible for all people, but as I look around, there are a lot of people but no BBQs, and this is a perfect spot for that,” he said “To utilise parks better, they need to have better facilities. A lot can be done, and Emily has highlighted many of the things that need improvement.” Cr Cornish will raise Miss King’s requests at the next Council meeting this Monday night.
WW10514
Miss King has the support of her Council mentor, Councillor Marcus Cornish, who said he will take her issues to Penrith City Council. “All major parks should be prioritised to start with, whether they are playing fields or picnic facilities,” he said. Miss King and Cr Cornish recently visited Jamison Park, which Cr Cornish said is a modern, all-accessible park but lacks one thing.

Luddenham: Concern after shotguns stolen from safe
A woman has been charged after police saw her acting suspiciously around a block of units in Kingswood. At about 11pm on Monday, August 10, police were patrolling the Kingswood area when they stopped and spoke with a woman who was allegedly running through the driveway of a block of units. Officers saw cause to search the woman. The 24-year-old allegedly had a number of items of mail including bank cards and letters. She was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station where she was issued with a court attendance notice. She was charged for ‘goods in personal custody suspected of being stolen’ and is due to appear in court on August 31.
Police are appealing for information after firearms were stolen during a break-in at Luddenham. Between 8pm on Wednesday, August 12, and 5.30pm on Friday, August 14, a break-in occurred at a property on Queens Hills Road in Luddenham. Police from St Marys Local Area Command have launched an official investigation after two firearms were stolen from the property. A 12-gauge double barrel over under shotgun and a 12 gauge single barrel shotgun were stolen from a locked gun safe in the house. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers immediately on 1800 333 000 or St Marys Police Station on 9677 7499.
Penrith: Man taken to hospital after domestic stabbing
Werrington County: Man shot, police arrest man and woman
A woman has been charged after a man was stabbed in Penrith late last week in an incident believed to be domestic related. At about 10pm on Thursday, August 13, police attended the scene at Landy Avenue, Penrith, after reports of a stabbing. They found a 50-year-old man with multiple stab wounds to his back, torso and leg. A 49-year-old woman was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station. She was charged with ‘wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm’. The man was taken to hospital in a stable condition. The woman was refused bail.
A man was shot in Werrington County late last week. At about 12.35am on Thursday, August 13, officers were called to a home on Charles Sturt Drive in Werrington County after a man with gunshot wounds knocked on the door of the home asking for help. The shooting happened at a nearby car park. The 30-year-old man was taken to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition. A 23-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman have since been arrested and charged with firearm and drugs offences. Investigations into the shooting itself are continuing.

espite the need for a lift, Member for Londonderry Prue Car said the Baird Government has no plans to provide vital upgrades to Kingswood Train Station. Ms Car was at Kingswood Station with Shadow Minister for Transport, Ryan Park on Wednesday to highlight the current accessibility issues for the elderly and disabled. “Mobility scooters can’t turn around on the bends of this old ramp as it’s really narrow,” she said. “We need a lift here, every other station – St Marys, Penrith and Emu Plains – all have lift access. People are choosing not to use Kingswood Station, and go to others with lifts.” Ms Car said that the former Transport Minister, and current Treasurer Gladys Berejiklian, suggested an upgrade to Kingswood Station was being ‘considered’. “The Treasurer herself said she wanted every train station in NSW to have disability access, yet it seems Kingswood Station has been left behind,” she said. Mr Park said the station’s access upgrade is vital, and locals need to know once and for all when and if it will be carried out.

Licence trouble
Friday 21 August 2015 ÂŤ the western weekender
An internal investigation is currently underway after it was discovered a veteran local police officer who is facing drink-driving charges hasn’t held a licence for more than 20 years. Detective Sergeant Andrew John Clarke from Penrith Police Station is at the centre of the investigation, according to The Daily Telegraph. Mr Clarke was charged with a drinkdriving offence in July after giving a reading of .170 at Windsor Police Station, where it was realised he didn’t hold a current driver’s licence. “The officer was issued with a future Court Attendance Notice for [the] offence of ‘unlicensed driver’, a police spokesperson told the Weekender this week. “He will appear at Downing Centre local court on Thursday, September 17. “The officer remains at work on restricted duties pending the outcome of court matters and an internal investigation. The Telegraph revealed on Wednesday that the Detective Sargeant once worked as a Highway Patrol officer.
Win for workers State Penrith MP Stuart Ayres says the passage through Parliament of the Workers Compensation Amendment Bill 2015 and the State Insurance and Care Governance Bill 2015 is significant news for the local area. “This is a big win for injured workers and businesses in Penrith and across NSW, he said. “It’s clear we have struck the right balance between the needs of injured workers and the businesses that support the scheme. The Bills will see $1 billion worth of enhanced benefits passed on to injured workers and employers, and the structural reform of the workers compensation system. At the last election, the State Government committed that every dollar above the minimum surplus needed to keep the scheme sustainable would be returned to injured workers and business in a two third, one third split. “Our system has a social heart and a commercial mind, Mr Ayres said on Wednesday.
Cops on the hunt The NSW Police Force has joined Crime Stoppers Australia for Operation Roam 2015, to help track down wanted fugitives from across the country. Police will use Facebook and Twitter to seek information from the community about a number of alleged offenders who may have left their state or territory and are now residing interstate. This year, Crime Stoppers has compiled a list of 20 wanted people, including 47-year-old Brady Hamilton who is wanted over his alleged involvement in a homicide in western Sydney in 1999. “Operation Roam sends a clear message that we are all working together – with the support of our community – to help capture some of the country’s most wanted people, said Operational Communications and Information Commander, Assistant Commissioner Peter Barrie.

We care what you think Penrith residents have given Council a tick of approval and some valuable feedback in a recent community survey. Earlier this year more than 600 households, randomly selected to represent an accurate cross section of the community, took part in a biennial survey. Residents revealed that they valued the area’s community spirit, family friendly atmosphere, green spaces and youth services just to name a few. The survey provided valuable insight into areas for improvement as well as where residents felt Council was doing well.

PUBLIC EXHIBITION Planning Proposal Reclassifying certain Public Land in St Marys Town Centre Penrith City Council wants to hear your views on a Planning Proposal to reclassify certain public land in St Marys Town Centre (the Town Centre). The land is generally located adjacent to the existing shopping centres in the Town Centre (Station Plaza and St Marys Village) and consists of open space and car parking. The land is already zoned to allow mixed-use development (residential, retail and business). The Planning Proposal recommends changing the classification of the land from Community Land to Operational Land. This is required to prepare the land to allow Council to consider opportunities that
PENRITH CITY COUNCIL ONLINE facebook.com/penrith.city.council twitter.com/penrithcouncil instagram.com/penrithcitycouncil youtube.com/penrithcitycouncil penrithcity.nsw.gov.au penrithishere.com.au
will grow the Town Centre and implement the adopted St Marys Town Centre Strategy (the Strategy). These opportunities include the sale, lease and/or development of the land, none of which can be considered if the land remains as Community Land. The Strategy identifies how the Town Centre can become a vital, vibrant and sustainable place and provides policies and actions to create attractive public spaces and encourage new development. This will, in turn, generate activity in the Town Centre, attract new businesses and investment, and generate jobs. The actions include the creation of a town square, residential development near the train station, construction of a new street between Queen Street and Charles Hackett Drive, and the integration of the shopping centres into the Town Centre. These actions all require the use of some of the land. Changing the classification of the land does not remove the land from Council’s ownership or prevent the current use of the land from continuing. The Planning Proposal does not propose the sale, lease or development of the land – these matters will be considered in separate and later processes on how best to use the land to benefit the Town Centre and its communities. The Planning Proposal is on public exhibition for 28 days from 24 August to 21 September 2015 at Council’s Civic Centre, St Marys Office, Penrith and St Marys Libraries, and online. Fact sheets and guidance on how to make a submission are also available. Council officers will be available to answer questions on the Planning Proposal at the Civic Centre (Mondays and Fridays) and St Marys Office (Tuesdays and Thursdays). Alternatively, please contact Matthew Rose on 4732 7703 or at mrose@penrithcity.nsw.gov.au In addition to the public exhibition, an independently chaired public hearing has been arranged to occur before any Council decision is made. The timing and venue for the public hearing will be published once the public exhibition has ended.

Sisters act quickly to save their mum Praise for young Penrith sisters who phoned for help when their mother collapsed at home JADE ALIPRANDI
@jade_aliprandi
ocal sisters Isabelle and Mia McLean were rewarded at a special presentation on Tuesday after they were quick to act in contacting Triple Zero (000) during an incident involving their mother. When Kelly McLean collapsed at their home in May, possibly from a pre-existing medical condition, seven-year-old Isabelle and five-year-old Mia rang Triple Zero. The girls were both presented with a ‘Star Award’ at their school, Jamisontown Public, for their bravery during a scary time. Ms McLean said she had taught her children at a young age what to do in the case of an emergency. “I told them that if anything should happen to mummy they should always call Triple Zero, Ms McLean said. “I was amazed by the information that the girls were able to give the call taker. At about 6.40pm on May 20, Ms McLean was putting her two-year-old son to bed when she collapsed after suffering from a ‘dizzy spell’, possibly from having epilepsy but it has not been confirmed by doctors. While on the call, Isabelle was able to correctly provide her family’s address

Responding paramedics Acting Duty Operations Manager Michael Magyary, Graeme Findley and Kim Denic, with mum Kelly McLean and daughters Isabelle and Mia and contact details as well as outline her mother’s medical condition to the call taker, Priscilla Velthuys. Isabelle’s quick response enabled the
immediate dispatch of an ambulance. Not only did the girls ring 000 but while on the phone Mia also went next door to her neighbour’s house for help.
NSW Ambulance Acting Duty Operations Manager, Michael Magyary, who was first on the scene, said he was really impressed with how the girls handled the situation. “They kept their composure and did a great job answering questions about their mother’s medical condition, he said. “NSW Ambulance receives a number of calls each year from children placed in the position of having to manage a medical emergency. “Teaching your child how to contact Triple Zero and making sure they know information like their address and phone number, is extremely important and can help save lives, he said. A Triple Zero Kids’ Challenge is available as a phone app and teaches children the importance of calling Triple Zero for help when it’s needed. For more information you can visit www. kids.triplezero.gov.au. “I am just so proud of my daughters and would hate to think what could have happened if they hadn’t acted quickly, Ms McLean said. “It’s important for all the parents out there to know how vital it is that you teach your kids to call Triple Zero. Both Isabelle and Mia said they want to grow up to be paramedics.

Do you know your Old fashioned service and a long-forgotten model
Council cares Penrith Council has been given a tick of approval along with some valuable feedback in a recent community survey of residents. This endorsement by residents is great news ahead of Council forming a community panel to further involve the residents in recommending ways to improve the work we do. The survey of 600 households who were randomly selected across the local government area provided valuable insight into areas for improvement as well as letting Council know what we are doing well. On a comparative scale, Council is performing ahead of other metropolitan Councils of a similar size. Residents provided feedback saying their well-being, ‘feel’ of the City, Council’s services and overall satisfaction was greater in Penrith. That’s great news and something we are keen to continue building on. Challenges for Penrith over the next
10 years include infrastructure and catering for a growing and diverse population along with urban sprawl, traffic flow and congestion. Council is committed to maintaining all the values our community holds dear while we meet the demands for increased population in western Sydney. We are already working with all levels of government to ensure Penrith gets the most out of the infrastructure spending for the airport at Badgerys Creek including road upgrades and better public transport services. Community consultation is ongoing across those projects by the relevant state and federal departments and I encourage the community to provide their feedback. Council and the community are working together to bring plenty of new and stimulating opportunities as we move in a new and exciting direction for Penrith.

hen Anthony Walker opened Penrith’s first Bank of Queensland (BOQ) branch on August 22, 2005 he had youth, enthusiasm and extensive finance industry experience on his side. But there was one thing lacking – customers. It is a familiar story for many people walking the tightrope of starting their own business, but as he prepares to celebrate 10 years of operating BOQ in Penrith this weekend, Mr Walker has emerged as one of Penrith’s major unheralded business success stories and one of the bank’s leading owner-managers. BOQ essentially runs on a franchise model, so 43-year-old Mr Walker both owns and manages the Penrith branch on Station Street. “In 2004 I was working with the Commonwealth Bank and I found it frustrating being in a larger bank,” Mr Walker said. “Whilst I had a great career – they taught me a lot and I worked with some great people – it was frustrating when I couldn’t look after my customer base and the
W
people that worked for me as much as I would have liked. “I always had a burning desire to work for myself so I looked at a few different options, but never did I think there would be a banking option. I then heard about BOQ and the franchise model and it was perfect – that’s where it started.” Mr Walker spent 17 years with Commonwealth Bank and admits the enormity of his decision hit him when the branch first opened that Monday morning in 2005. “We had no immediate clients. There was a small amount of family and friends that came over but that dries up pretty quickly,” he said. “It was a real challenge for the first 24 to 36 months, but then we turned a corner and got out there building the brand, meeting some great people in the Penrith community and the community was really good in coming to the party to support us. They were looking for something different and that’s what our model delivers around the country.” After starting with zero clients and struggling to build a presence in the local area in the early days, BOQ’s Penrith branch is now among the most successful in the country, consistently in the bank’s top three performing locations out of more

are the keys to success for BOQ, which celebrates its 10th anniversary in Penrith this weekend than 250 nationwide. The bank believes in a long forgotten model of the true local bank manager and strong customer service. “When you talk about service from a big bank, they can make as much noise about that as they like but people aren’t silly – they understand when it’s genuine and when it’s not,” Mr Walker said. “People want the days when they knew their bank manager, and that just doesn’t happen anymore. That’s where word of mouth has spread for us.” Mr Walker said he never regretted his decision to start the branch even when times were a little tough. “I strongly believed in this journey all along the way. I’ve had some sleepless nights, anyone in business does, but there was a passion there and as long as I always had the right people ‘on the bus’ in the business that knew what we were here to deliver, I was definitive that this would be successful and it has been,” he said. An avid reader, particularly of management and leadership books, Mr Walker credits his staff and family as key elements of BOQ’s success in Penrith. “I look for the right people to get ‘on the bus’, even if I don’t have a seat for them on the bus,” he said of his Penrith team.

Blow for housing plan at Lakes site Land and Environment Court upholds Council decision to reject DA DALE DRINKWATER
Llandilo RFS receives the grant JADE ALIPRANDI
@jade_aliprandi
Llandilo NSW Rural Fire Service has been announced as the recipient of a 2015 Community Grant, with $4,921 in the station’s back pocket to use for an emergency readiness and response project. The Prepare Act Survive Pop Up Classroom project will provide important bushfire and fire safety education to the local community through the delivery of workshops. NRMA in Westfield Penrith announced the Fire Service as the recipient. NRMA spokesperson, Jennifer Cobley said the Community Grants program is about encouraging local organisations to help make their community safer. Christopher Ellul from NSW RFS Llandilo said the project will help to stress the importance of being prepared in the case of an emergency situation. “The project will enable us to promote bushfire and fire safety and stress the importance of being prepared not only for our immediate local community but for the wider community at large,” he said.

he NSW Land and Environment Court has upheld a decision by Penrith City Council in rejecting a Development Application (DA) for housing in the Penrith Lakes Scheme. The DA, submitted by Penrith Lakes Development Corporation (PLDC) early last year, was to subdivide ‘Lot Four’ in Penrith Lakes into two-hectare housing lots. Council rejected the application, a decision that was appealed by the PLDC in court last week. Council said they were happy with the Commissioner’s judgment to dismiss the appeal and refuse development consent. “In his judgment the Commissioner stated: ‘In this case, it would be harder to find a better example of where the wider public interest is best served by the rejection of the application so that land for the future growth of the Sydney region is produced in an efficient and environmentally sensitive manner’,” a spokesperson said. “Any future DAs will be assessed, like all DAs, on their own merits.” Council said the DA submitted by the PLDC in February 2014 was refused in relation to the relevant State Environmental Planning Policy; whether future

PLDC Director, Mick O’Brien, said the PLDC will carefully examine the Court’s ruling to consider the next steps. He said they’re encouraged that the
court identified urban development on sections of the Penrith Lakes site as “the best long-term outcome for the community”. “We will continue to pursue our ultimate goal of rezoning for home sites, which has always been at the heart of the Penrith Lakes Scheme,” he said. “We will consider all options to progress the scheme.” The Draft Vision Plan for the Penrith Lakes Development was exhibited to the community earlier this year.

enrith Police and Penrith City Council joined forces last week to celebrate the bicentenary of the first official government building in the area – a guard house and military depot built in 1815. The official ceremony took place outside Penrith Police Station, the original site of the guard house. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler officiated proceedings and began with acknowledging the site’s impact on the town over the years. “The site is basically the centre of which Penrith grew around,” he said. “It’s amazing that almost 200 years on, this site is still the one that keeps our town safe.” Law and order was brought to Penrith when the construction of the original building was completed. The building consisted of a lockup of four cells as well as accommodation for the district constable and watchmen. The guard house was eventually demolished in 1870 to make way for a court house. Detective Superintendent Brett McFadden said Penrith had come a long way in 200 years. “Penrith has emerged as a thriving
Mayor Ross Fowler with Detective Superintendent Brett McFadden holding the commemorative framed photo and sketch. In 1978, the court house was torn down to make way for the police station.

Real estate agents take a bite out of mighty steak challenge M4 Widening – Temporary closure notice The M4 Motorway will be closed between Church Street, Parramatta and Silverwater Road, Silverwater, between 11:30pm and 4am from Sunday 23 August to Wednesday 26 August 2015, weather permitting. Work is underway for the $500 million WestConnex M4 Widening. The Rizzani Leighton joint venture has been contracted to design and build this section of the WestConnex Motorway. As part of this project a temporary closure is required for the removal of overhead gantries at various locations on the M4 Motorway.
ather’s Day is just around the corner and the Peachtree Hotel in Penrith is keen to ensure that no dad finishes the day with an empty stomach. The Peachtree has announced a Father’s Day 1kg rump steak promotion, with local dads encouraged to take up the challenge on September 6. If you can successfully tackle the 1kg steak plus chips and salad, you’ll walk away with a limited edition Father’s Day t-shirt – and a huge ego boost. To attempt the steak challenge, the Weekender sent local real estate agents Daniel Latty from PRDnationwide and

Both sides should be told What sort of draconian society do we live in? Channels 7 and 10 are refusing to air a legitimate ad in support of traditional marriage, which is merely encouraging people to think about the consequences of homosexual marriage for children and to consider how sex-ed will be taught in schools. Is it a crime for private citizens to fund an ad to counteract the one-sided reporting of the media? The Irish referendum was preceded by a $25 million campaign funded by a “pro-gay” US foundation called Atlantic Philanthropies. It certainly wasn’t black-balled. We rely on the media to keep us informed but while the results of the Irish referendum were splashed across front pages in Australia, we heard precious little about the rally in Rome, where one million people marched in support of natural marriage. We realise how powerful the media is in influencing public opinion, so for them to abandon all pretence of neutrality or objectivity in not airing these ads, is not only narrow-minded but sinister. KIM FURST, PENRITH
Why would tourists come? As someone who has lived somewhere else before moving here, my first impressions were, this place could have been pretty, but poor planning has meant it is not (Penrith’s tourism grab, Weekender
August 14). It had potential, but it has been squandered. If you want tourists you have to give them a reason to stay. CHERYL MACKIE, VIA FACEBOOK

Family Room benefits from fundraising day at the footy
More information needed Makes me wonder why Penrith got rid of the visitor centre? Even as a local I don’t know where to go to find different things to see and do in the area? Think like a tourist! Where do they go? RACHEL MCENTEE, VIA FACEBOOK
No rail link for airport If it is going to be a mostly freight airport, then I suppose a rail connection is not – in some people’s eyes – necessary, given most freight these days is distributed by road (Lack of rail link could cause gridlock, Weekender August 14). But it continues to amaze me that various governments have allowed the railways to be dismantled in favour of trucks. ROB WEAVER, VIA FACEBOOK
Too much pressure I agree with Troy Dodds’ underlying point that we put too much pressure on our sporting icons (Editor’s Desk, Weekender August 14). Michael Clarke is in his early to mid 30s and yet we expect that he has the experience, the knowledge and the ability to handle major leadership situations. STEVE WILLOUGHBY, PENRITH

he Ronald McDonald Nepean Family Room has received three quarters of their total yearly operating costs, thanks to fundraising efforts by the Penrith Panthers. On July 26, $10 from each ticket sold for the Penrith Panthers vs Canberra Raiders game at Pepper Stadium went to helping the Nepean Family Room. In conjunction with other funding contributions and the sale of jerseys, the total came to just over $52,500. Ronald McDonald House Executive
T
Officer, Mike Thomas, said the funds raised cover a large portion of the $70,000 per year it costs to provide the service. “You put this contribution toward what we need and it’s absolutely significant,” he said. Meagan Preston, Nepean Family Room Coordinator, was ecstatic with the amount, which will contribute to the ongoing operating costs and updating the room. “We just purchased some new equipment for the children, and we are going to update the children’s play area,” she said.

Penrith City Council is now assessing development and construction applications electronically, processing them easier and cheaper. All determinations will now be released via email, removing the need for multiple hard copies of plans and documents and helping to assess applications more efficiently. The changes apply to all development and construction applications, including Section 96 Applications and Construction Certificates. Once the application is determined, an email is sent to the applicant providing a link that allows them to download the electronically stamped and authorised determination documents. Council said they are moving towards streamlining other applications in the future. Two briefing sessions have been held for over 700 local community groups and organisations to submit to Penrith Council’s Community Panel. Last Thursday, the one hour stakeholder information sessions were held at the Civic Centre to explain how the process works, how they can be involved and to answer questions from community groups. The groups heard directly about how they can have their voice heard through the Community Panel process. For more information on the Community
Panel and Council’s new direction in deliberative democracy, visit www. yoursaypenrith.com.au/communitypanel. Council is encouraging the community to attend The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre’s Gala Concert ‘La Stupenda’ on August 29, to celebrate 25 years of the centre. Performers include The Song Company, one of Australia’s most acclaimed and recognised pianists Tamara Cislowska, and ‘the next superstar of Opera’, Amelia Farrugia. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said it will be a night to remember with an array of Australian world class talent. “They will be joined on stage by the Acacia Quartet and one of Australia’s most celebrated didgeridoo players William Barton. The evening will feature a world premiere by Australia’s greatest living composer Elena Kats-Chernin,” he said. The Joan has welcomed over 6.5 million people of all ages through its doors over the last 25 years, either as audience members, class participants or performing on its stages. Council said they are proud of their history with The Joan, and will continue to support and encourage the arts. To book tickets or for more information telephone The Joan on 4723 7600.

here’s no better time to explore your family history than right now. August is National Family History Month, and to celebrate, the Nepean Family History Society has waived their membership fees for anyone who wishes to explore their family’s past. Christine Unett, Nepean Family History Society’s President, is encouraging the local community to come in and find out more about their ancestry. “During the month of August it’s free, and anybody can come over at any time – we are offering tea and coffee and biscuits as well, she said. “We have subscriptions to Ancestry and FindMyPast, and as a member or a visitor during this month, you pay nothing, and have full access to them. “You can find lots of family trees that people have already put up on those sites, and records from all over the world and there’s more becoming available. The Nepean Family History Society is holding free talks once a week on a variety of family history topics such as Dutch genealogy, colonial correspondence and Irish famine orphans. The next talk will be on Wednesday, August 26 at 1pm, and will better equip

s a musician all you really want is to get your music heard. Especially if those hearing it have the ability to broadcast it to thousands of people across the country. Local alternative metal band Fifth Dawn, which includes students from Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School and Penrith High School, have found themselves in this exact position. The five piece have been selected as one of five finalists in triple j’s Unearthed High, a competition which showcases the best young musicians from schools across the country. “We were blown away,” lead singer Samantha Faul said of the nomination. “It’s just really an eye opening experience into what we can do as a band.”
A
EXTENDED WEEKEND HOURS
Fifth Dawn’s track ‘Turbulence’ was chosen from a pool of 1280 songs and has earned a huge amount of support from fans on Facebook, a thumbs up from alternative rock band Birds of Tokyo and plenty of airplay on triple j. “We feel like we’re so blessed that triple j’s been on the Fifth Dawn bandwagon,” Samantha said. With a heavy sound and female vocals it would be easy to draw comparisons with bands like Evanescence, but Fifth Dawn deserves their own recognition for the tightness and maturity of their sound, which is even more impressive when you consider they’ve been playing together for less than a year. “We definitely thought we had the right band when we got together and started writing,” drummer Jordan Powell said. The triple j Unearthed High winner was announced on August 20. See the Weekender Facebook page for the results.

Brooke’s back to raise money for those who need a helping hand JADE ALIPRANDI
@jade_aliprandi
ine-year-old Glenmore Park resident, Brooke Jones, will again host the ‘Brooke’s Car Rally’ fundraiser this year, with the hope of surpassing the $10,000 mark. Over 60 car loads of people participated in last year’s event where $10,671 was raised. Since the fundraiser’s start in 2013, Brooke has raised money for the Nepean Cancer Care Centre each year after her mum, Amanda Jones, was diagnosed with stage two Hodgkin’s Lymphoma when Brooke was just two-years-old. However, this year Brooke has decided to raise money for the Children’s Hospital at Westmead and their Epilepsy Research Unit, and raise money for the Nepean Cancer Care Centre every second year. “Brooke realised through fundraising that there are a lot of other charities that can do with help and she just thought ‘why not help the children?’,” Ms Jones said. “She also chose the Epilepsy Research Unit because Mark Geyer has been such a big supporter of the rally and he is heavily involved with the Unit – it was a way to help him out a little bit and give back to him.”
N
Brooke Jones is ready to rally Participants in the rally embark on a scavenger hunt around Penrith, finishing up at an undisclosed location, while they answer questions, follow directions and decipher clues to lead them to the finish line. Ms Jones is celebrating seven years in remission this week and says she couldn’t be more proud of her daughter for her efforts. “The amount of money she has raised, $17,880, since starting the rally just blows me away,” she said. “I couldn’t be any prouder of her.” The challenge kicks off at 9.00am in the Penrith Panthers car park on Sunday, November 1 at just $15 per car. To sign up for the challenge or to sponsor the fundraiser you can visit www. brookescarrally.com.

igital media may play a huge role in delivering us news and information in generations to come, but nothing can replace the look and feel of print. It’s a fact proven by the success of the Penrith Museum of Printing, which is still proudly in operation 15 years after opening its doors for the first time. The fully functioning print shop that moonlights as a museum is home to several printing machines, all antiques. “I started printing in the 1950s and I
loved it – it’s all I’ve ever wanted to do,” said Penrith Museum of Printing volunteer, Graham Elphick. “I live at St Marys so I’m nice and close and I was just so happy when I heard they would be opening a print shop again – I almost never miss a Saturday,” he said. With over 30 volunteers, the printing museum relies on donations to remain open and have a few volunteers who are qualified to fix the machines themselves. The Museum is located on the corner of Mulgoa Road and Ransley Street in Penrith. It is open most Saturdays. More online: Read the full story at www.westernweekender.com.au.

A committee has recently been formed in Penrith with a launch event to be held at the Tattersalls Hotel on August 27. “Men of League is a great organisation which does terrific work in assisting those who have spent their lives in and around the game but have fallen on tough times, and it is fantastic for a great league town like Penrith to have its own chapter,” said Men of League Penrith President, Alex McKenzie. The Men of League Penrith launch will be held at the Tattersalls Hotel on Thursday, August 27. Tickets cost $20. For more information and to RSVP, contact Alex McKenzie on 0414 330 651 or email penrith@menofleague.com.

BUSINESS TIPS How teamwork can ensure you kick all of your goals
Is your website doing all it can for your business?
Michelle Grice // Founder of Shel Design
Michael Todd // Small Biz Connect Advisor Penrith Valley BEC
n the weekend my son’s soccer team had one of their best matches of their season. They executed every instruction from their coach perfectly and they worked together seamlessly as a team. They kept in position (not easy for under 10s!) and they were fearless against an undefeated team who have won by very large margins. Unfortunately, my son’s team didn’t get the win (in case you are wondering, it was 3-1), but the players were far from dejected. They knew they had played an amazing game and were proud of themselves for the way they had played, despite not winning. Here are some valuable lessons for your team: 1. Work together on common goals. At the beginning of the match, the coach told them to start strong and they achieved this. The key element though was that none of the players were attempting to be ‘heroes’: when they should have passed the ball, they did. An effective team knows how to work well together and doesn’t try to look for
opportunities to outdo each other. 2. Motivate your team. The under 10s soccer team had participated in an intense and exciting training session the night before and they carried this enthusiasm and learned skills into their game. Ensure that each of your team members feels supported, encouraged, equipped for the task and motivated to achieve an outcome. Expecting staff to work their way through tasks without a view of the bigger picture, and therefore no reason to participate fully, almost always results in sub-standard outcomes. 3. Be fearless. Once the soccer match got underway it was obvious that the opposing team’s success revolved around one very skilled player. When my son’s team realised this, achieving success didn’t seem quite so daunting. Remind yourself, and instil in your team, a ‘nothing can stop us’ attitude. And while this does not guarantee success in every circumstance, it certainly creates a mindset more suited to a high achieving team.
I
often get questions regarding websites to do with the look and feel and also the sales part of it – will people buy? Is the text right? Why aren’t people contacting me? It’s interesting, we spend so much of a marketing budget on a website but some business people spend more time proof reading their brochure than what is on their website. Your website is a powerful piece of your marketing. If used correctly you won’t lose customers to competitors, you will attract ideal prospects and convert them to paying customers. What do we want to see in a website when we visit them as a potential customer? We want to see headlines that are clear and grab our attention. When we pick up a newspaper, we don’t go straight to the articles, we skim across the headlines. Why should a website be any different? Attention needs to be captured very quickly. Make people want to read more. We want to see how we can benefit by using the product or service. The features and detail are important, but they are not why customers buy. We
think ‘how will this improve our lives?’ ‘What problems will it solve?’ Emphasise the benefits and end results of what your product or services brings to them. Also, get details by adding op-in forms in the right places. There are many visitors that aren’t ready to use your product or service right now. They need more information before you get them. We want to see clean design and no clutter. Clutter is the biggest mistake if evident. When people are confronted with too many decisions and options, they tend to walk away from that decision process and choose no option. We want to see stories of how people in similar situations have been helped. Testimonials and success stories give you credibility. Other people are selling for you here, real people are showing the benefits of using you. We want a call to action if we are interested. This is closing the deal. This can be standalone button, image or line of text that prompts your visitors and leads them to take a specific action. Your call-to-action should be visually in contrast to the main colour scheme or design of your website.

HISTORY
Turning back Time
A gold medal day in our local area Penrith certainly wasn’t left out when it came to the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Jade Aliprandi reports on the successful and at times very emotional Torch Relay at Jamison Park... The crowd at Jamison Park. Photo: Penrith City Library
O
n September 3, 2000, Penrith locals were invited to join in on the festivities of the Olympic Torch Ceremony and Relay, held at Jamison Park. Next month marks 15 years since the exciting day in Penrith’s modern history. An exciting time for residents, the relay around Sydney had over 5000 torchbearers, selected from the Community Torchbearer selection program, comprising Australians from all walks of life who had made a special contribution to the community around them. A select few were chosen from the Penrith area to participate in the ceremony at Jamison Park with one torchbearer unfortunately unable to make it to the ceremony – local paralympian Ched Towns. Mr Towns was devoted to challenging himself and used his condition of blindness to his advantage by taking on any task he could, including being the first
blind person to climb Mt Everest. He was on a training expedition for the trip when he reportedly fell ill from altitude sickness and later died. Mr Towns’ son Kane, who was originally meant to be his support runner, and his wife Judy ran the relay in place of him. In an issue of the Weekender after the relay in 2000, Kane Towns spoke of his father. “We didn’t realise that dad would be running on Father’s Day when he was chosen as a Torchbearer but as it turned out this was our first Father’s Day without him,” he told the Weekender. “It would have been a pretty sad day knowing dad was supposed to be running the torch in Penrith but it ended up being memorable for all the right reasons.” Mrs Towns also spoke of her time in the relay. “I was just so glad that I got to enjoy it,” she said. “The school kids all came up with enjoyment on their faces to see the torch – it’s just something they will never forget and it was a real buzz.”
The Torch Relay covered more than 27,000 kilometres and travelled within one hour’s drive of 85 per cent of the population. Mayor of Penrith at the time and Chairman of the Penrith Olympic Torch Relay Committee, John Bateman, spoke of the significance each Torchbearer was going to play, reported on in an early edition of the Weekender. “All I can say to each Torchbearer is to savour the moment as this once in a lifetime opportunity will not come by again,” he said. He also stressed how important the escort runners were going to be. “Don’t undersell the significance of your role which is to provide support and encouragement to the Torchbearers as they carry the flame,” he said. The torch travelled through Emu Plains, around Regatta Park, past Tench Reserve, and around UWS, among other places, and was lit in Jamison Park by Kane Towns at the official lighting ceremony. Reportedly over 200,000 people turned out for the event.
The relay and ceremony weren’t the only excitement Penrith had from the Olympics with major water sport competitions including rowing, slalom canoeing and kayaking held in the area.

I
am predicting that the vast majority of you are reading this preview AFTER Penrith’s clash with St George-Illawarra in Wollongong on Thursday night. Therefore, rather than spend the next 600 or so words talking about that match, I thought I’d write about the next few weeks in general and why there’s still plenty of interest left in season 2015 for the Panthers. Last weekend’s 24-10 victory over the Warriors was a relief more than anything – a victory that snapped a five match losing streak and brought a smile to the small but vocal, passionate and loyal home crowd. Much has been said about Penrith’s injury woes this season and unfortunately we can only dream about what the outcome of this season would have been had players like Matt Moylan, Jamal Idris, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, Dean Whare,
Brent Kite and Peter Wallace remained on the park for the majority of the year. By the time round 26 comes and goes, there will be an extraordinary statistic about how much time Penrith’s spine (1, 6, 7 and 9) spent on the park together in season 2015 – and no team in the NRL with that sort of disruption would have made the finals, in my view. But there’s been many highlights, and still a few to come. For me, one of the most unheralded stories of 2015 has been the debut of prop forward Reagan Campbell-Gillard, who will almost certainly win Penrith’s Ben Alexander Rookie of the Year award later this year. Named to make his debut in round one against the Bulldogs, Campbell-Gillard – incredibly given the injury crisis at the club – has played every single match of 2015. The consistency of his first season statistics from game to game speak volumes about the type of player Campbell-Gillard is, and while he is not talked about like many of the game’s rising stars, you
PANTHERS V DRAGONS THURSDAY, AUGUST 20 • 7.45PM WIN STADIUM REFEREES: ASHLEY KLEIN AND ALAN SHORTALL TV: CHANNEL NINE LIVE 7.45PM RADIO: TRIPLE M LIVE 7.45PM get the feeling a breakout season is just around the corner. The fact that Ivan Cleary hasn’t seen the need to drop him back to reserve grade just to ensure his head doesn’t get too big is also a strong indication that the 22-year-old is well-equipped to handle his promising future. Without question, Bryce Cartwright’s season has been superb and while the 20-year-old has required a little closer attention from Cleary, he is a player with
raw talent, energy and a desire to get his hands on the ball as much as possible. It’s incredible to think he’s only 20 and has his best football still ahead of him. Sit back and enjoy his performances over the final rounds because I get the feeling you will see him sound a warning siren in terms of what to expect from him in 2016. What about David Simmons? The veteran who just keeps giving, he was brilliant against the Warriors last weekend and is so reliable that I hope he goes around again next season – even if he only plays 10 or 11 matches. And then there’s Cleary himself. The Dally M Coach of the Year in 2014, I’ll never accept an invitation to play poker with him – his bluff is simply too good. He would know more than most what has really gone on at Penrith behind the scenes in 2015 and there is no question that the Trent Barrett saga, injuries and player movements would have worn him down – nobody deserves a little break in September and October more than him. My guess is he’ll be back in the office preparing for 2016 sooner than we think.

PANTHERS LOOK AT FUTURE PNG OPTIONS
» Penrith already has a strong relation-
ship with Papua New Guinea but that has been strengthened over the last week. Phil Gould was part of a four-member Penrith Panthers delegation that visited Port Moresby last weekend. “We are looking at a long-term partnership with the Penrith Panthers and we appreciate their time and this great opportunity as they are the first NRL club that has reached out to PNGRFL,” said PNG Rugby Football League Chairman, Sandis Tsaka. Among some of the points discussed was a joint membership between Penrith Panthers and PNGRFL programs which include the SP Hunters, a player pathway for PNG players into the NRL system, coaching assistance and the possibility of a trial match between the Penrith Panthers NSW Cup team and the Hunters.
» Sika Manu will depart Penrith at the
end of the season to join Hull FC in the UK Super League. Manu is moving on after three years with the Panthers. “Sika is an absolutely wonderful person. He is also a complete professional both on and off the field,” Panthers boss Phil Gould said. “We at Panthers will be forever grateful to Sika for coming to our club when he did and for the tremendous impact he has had on our young developing players. We can assure his new club they have recruited a quality footballer and a quality person.”
» Nigel Plum shocked everybody with his retirement announcement last weekend – including the man photographed (above right), who we’re declaring as Plummy’s biggest fan.
» Penrith Panthers cheerleader Jessica
Gilarte was this week named the Big League Cheerleader of the Year. The Pantherette said she was “beyond excited” to win the crown after an extensive voting period. Jessica was featured in the Weekender last week.
» It’s the great OAK shortage. Given the
major sponsorship agreement between the Panthers and OAK, it’s surprising that so few OAK milks are available to buy in the food outlets at Pepper Stadium. In a major outrage, no milks were available in the media box last weekend either – and we all know that journalists love milk, not beer (not that beer was available either).
» The new TV deal has certainly cre-
Is this Nigel Plum’s biggest fan? Photo: Andrew Farrell / 77 Media ated drama at Fox Sports, who are now in a desperate bid to ensure they have a particularly strong offering for rugby league fans come 2018. The truth is that with Channel Nine increasing their live game count from two to four from 2018, many fans will cancel their subscriptions to Foxtel. Most fans don’t watch eight games a week and Channel Nine’s schedule will run across four days, and most likely include a broader range of teams given the NRL has ownership of the schedule. The new TV deal got very little mention on Fox Sports programs such as ‘NRL 360’, ‘Monday Night with Matty Johns’ and ‘Sterlo’ last week despite being the biggest story of the week, suggesting some major rumblings behind the scenes.
» Fans have constantly complained
about the Broncos being on free-to-air television too much, but in a bizarre twist, Channel Nine has somehow missed out on showing the top of the table battle between Brisbane and the Sydney Roosters on Saturday night. The game will almost certainly be the biggest rating match of the weekend for Fox Sports.
» The Panthers will soon announce
details of a big day planned for Penrith’s
clash against Newcastle in round 26. The clash is a danger game for match day organisers who know the unappealing battle may struggle to draw a big crowd. A car giveaway combined with farewells for Nigel Plum, Sika Manu, Lewis Brown and others should help encourage people to come out on a Saturday afternoon, however. We’re also suggesting that Scott McRae does another farewell lap of honour similar to 2012. McRae produced the shortest sacking/retirement in ground announcer history, returning for the first game of the 2013 season and has remained an integral part of the Panthers’ match day experience ever since. John Farnham, eat your heart out.
» There’s whispers doing the rounds that the Panthers will produce a new jersey for the 2016 season to coincide with the club’s 50th anniversary. There was very little change from the 2014 to 2015 jersey design, so a change is inevitable in an attempt to boost merchandise sales.
» Panthers forward Reagan Campbell-
Gillard was charged with a grade two careless high tackle following the game against the Warriors, but escaped suspension with an early guilty plea.

Why I had to walk away In his own words, prop Nigel Plum reveals why he decided to pull the pin on his rugby league career last weekend...
NIGEL PLUM
T
he decision to retire last Saturday night after the Warriors game was hard to make but also a decision I am more than comfortable with. I recently suffered two head knocks back to back against Souths and the Roosters and I didn’t think too much of them, however a couple of weeks later when playing the Raiders, I copped a real heavy knock. For about four days or so after that, every time I sneezed or coughed I could feel pressure in my head. That scared me. During that week I considered retiring right there and then because I’d never felt anything like that before. After I came good and passed all the tests to play again, I made the decision that if I got another knock before the end of the year then that would be it. I ended up copping a little knock during the final training session last Friday, there wasn’t much in it but I was dazed for about five seconds. I guess the number of head knocks close to one another is what scared me the most and I made the decision to retire because of that, and I’m happy I’ve done so.
Nigel Plum with his two kids last Saturday. Photo: 77 Media I went into the game against the Warriors last Saturday knowing it would be my last. I didn’t want to let the boys down, so I gave it my all. The boys didn’t know I was retiring, only Ivan did, so it was hard telling them the news after the game – I was feeling very emotional. It’s hard to explain the feeling I had when that final whistle blew, knowing that it was all over.
I remember with five minutes to go we were attacking New Zealand’s line and I looked up at the clock and thought, this is really it. The last few minutes were pretty tough but I really cherished it. I’ve been at Penrith since 2010 and my time at the club has been nothing short of memorable. I’d have to say last year’s fairytale run to the finals and Saturday night’s game, my 150th, were two of the highlights of my career. I’m extremely proud of myself and the career I’ve had. I’m proud that I was smart enough to pull the pin when the time was right. I’m still going to hang around the club for the next few weeks and train with the rehab group. Even though I’ve retired, I still want to support the boys. I’d love to get a job at the club next year, I’ve made a home here at Penrith and if I could stay involved somehow, that would be great. If not, hopefully I stay involved with the game in some capacity. Finally, after many years branded as the hardest hitter in the game, I can’t go past Rooster Dylan Napa as the next in line. Dylan’s a great young talent and has a bright future. He’s got the size and ability, and I’m really glad I don’t have to run into him ever again.

FEATURE STORY
Being Jamal: Life, love and the NRL On the surface, Jamal Idris has the world at his feet. But the Penrith Panthers star struggles to deal with the fanfare that comes with being such a recognisable figure. He is determined that football will not define who he is...
DALE DRINKWATER @daledrinkwater
O
n the football field, the 115kg hulking frame of Jamal Idris gives the impression of an unbreakable, fierce and dominant character. The real Jamal Idris, however, is anything but. This is not a story about rugby league. It’s not about tries, tackles or premiership points. It is a story about a young, 25-yearold man who has the world at his feet, but doesn’t quite know what he wants from that world or what it expects from him. It’s about a quietly spoken, often misunderstood gentle giant whose true feelings are often disguised by a tough exterior. Standing at almost two metres tall, Idris never expected the NRL stardom that he has achieved. “I didn’t grow up thinking that I was going to be a football player,” he said. “My first interview when I was 18, they asked me what I thought was going to happen. I said to be honest, if I play one
game, get man of the match and get a thousand bucks, I’ll go buy an old van, put a mattress in the back and travel around Australia.” But over 130 first grade games later, his life is a far cry from that vision. Idris’ physical features have been both a blessing and a curse, launching him into the spotlight, and giving him a life many would be envious of. However, as grateful as he is, the fame and attention created personal struggles that have been hard to escape. “I stick out like a sore thumb. My moods, that are roller-coasters, get noticed so easily,” he said. “I can walk down the street and people just stare. I’m at a traffic light, and people are in cars next to me trying to take pictures. I’m having dinner with my mother and people are walking past with their cameras up trying to record me.” The staring seems to bother Idris most. “I already get paranoid about people staring, because I’m generally paranoid as it is,” he said. “I always grew up thinking it’s rude to
stare, and when you tell them it’s rude to stare, they look at you like you’re the one that’s being rude. “I’m just trying to live my life, doing the best I can with what God gave me.” What is most misunderstood about Idris is that as much he does love football, it doesn’t define him. “I love playing because I have fun playing. I don’t think people get that football is my career, and they think I should live and breathe it, but no, I don’t,” he said. “People see me play football, and they think they know me because of the game, and style of play I play. I am so different to rugby league; it’s like putting a triangle into a circle.” As a footballer, disconnecting from your job is difficult to do. “People work 8-5 and say it’s tough, and I get it. But they get to go home afterwards and be themselves; they’re no longer their job. I go home and I’m still a football player,” he said. “And people question why I left the Bulldogs. Are you kidding me? You’ve never left a job?” WW18861

The last year has been challenging for Idris, who has been investing heavily in his friends and family since the break-up of his engagement. “We were best friends since we were nine-years-old, so you do lose a best friend. You’re left in a world where your ground is taken away, and you’re just trying to find something to hold onto again,” he said. Idris holds on particularly tight to his younger brother, who he feels understands him most. “I’m thinking everyone feels lost. I’m not the only one, but I feel majorly lost,” he said. “Mentally, I’m a person that’s out of time. The way I think, the way I see things, I wasn’t made for this time. Not many people understand me, so they sit there and say, ‘You have it so good at the moment’. “My brother has never pressured me to keep playing because of money, he has always said that I have to do what makes me happy. I never had it in my head that this is what I was going to be. Yeah I have it good, but I put myself in a position where I worked hard, and my family did as well.” While being sidelined with an injury, Idris admitted it’s hard to stay motivated, but has channelled his money and excess time into his family. “My family is everything so a lot of my money goes to them. I’ve never needed much of it, look at me, look at the way I’m dressed,” he laughed. After football, Idris said he just wants to lead a simple life.

FEATURE STORY
Jamal Idris will return to the football field in 2016 “I know it’s not a job but I just want to be happy. I want a little place, just quiet, somewhere in the country but not too far from the water,” he said. But it’s not over any time soon for the former NSW and Australia representative, who has a burning desire to win a premiership at Penrith.
“That premiership gets me. That’s the thing you want at the end of your career, to look in your cabinet and have that looking back at you,” he said. The Panthers were one game short of the Grand Final last year but his best premiership chance came with the Bulldogs in 2009, with Parramatta ending that dream.
“You still remember things about that game like it was yesterday, and it still burns you,” he said, clearly determined to make 2016 a memorable year. Ironically, this interview was interrupted and ended when a mother asked for Idris to get a photo with her baby. He happily obliged.

PANTHERS PUT TO THE TEST BUT ESCAPE WITH VICTORY AS FINALS GET CLOSER
PANTHERS FLYING HIGH FOR WARRIORS CLASH AFTER SECURING TOP FOUR FINISH
They haven’t been challenged in a number of weeks but the New Zealand Warriors really gave Penrith’s Holden Cup team a run for their money last Saturday afternoon at Pepper Stadium. With the Panthers looking to extend their winning streak to seven, the reigning premiers were determined to give the home side a real contest before the finals get underway in less than a month. Penrith were certainly pushed to their limits during the 80 minute contest but managed to prevail in the end 36-28 to maintain their position atop the Holden Cup ladder. Both the Panthers and Warriors were locked at 16-all at half-time but it was the visitors who pushed out to a shock 16-4 lead early. Penrith managed to claw their way back into the game with their three first half tries coming the way of Jake Ennis and Jarome Luai, who snagged himself a double in the opening 40. When players hit the field for the second half, it was the Warriors who opened the scoring to push out in front 22-16. After absorbing a mountain of work in defence, the Panthers hit back through Corey Waddell to even the scores. From that moment on, it was all Penrith
Maliko Filino’s second half hat-trick including the 79th minute match winner has inspired the Panthers to escape Henson Park with a heart-stopping 2018 win over Newtown. With other results also going Penrith’s way, the win means that the defending premiers have secured a minimum top four finish with two rounds remaining. Sam Anderson’s first try for 2015 midway through the first half cancelled out an early try to Jets five-eighth Blake Ayshford. But despite having dominated possession for large periods of the first half, Penrith were unable to take the lead before a Nathan Gardner try allowed the Jets to lead 12-6 at the break. Penrith’s patience in possession improved immensely in the second half and, by midway through the half, they took the lead for the first time 16-12, through back-to-back tries scored by Filino. The Jets regained the lead with 13 minutes remaining from an audacious chip and chase try to half Todd Murphy but just as it appeared the Jets would hold on for their third consecutive win over the Panthers, Penrith snatched victory with the last play of the game.
Penrith celebrates a try with young gun Reed Izzard barging his way over followed by fullback Dylan Edwards scoring in the corner. With the Panthers up 32-22, the Warriors decided to once again play some footy, scoring in the 67th minute to make it just a four point game. But with Warriors in a commanding attacking position on Penrith’s line, everything went wrong in an instant after a terrible grubber kick deflected off Panthers centre Brent Naden who was able to regather the ball and race away 92m to score. Nathan Cleary, who wasn’t having the greatest of afternoons with the boot, missed the final conversion. Penrith took on the St George Illawarra Dragons on Thursday in Wollongong.
A quick shift right inside the Jets’ 20 metre zone allowed Sam Scarlett to put Filino through a gap to score the matchwinning try. Whilst Filino was the hero with his hat-trick, Adam Docker produced arguably his best game of the season to date, highlighted by the return of some of his trademark brutal hits in defence. The win may have come at a cost with Ben Murdoch-Masila (ankle) forced from the field during the second half. This Saturday, the Panthers travel to Auckland to take on co-leaders, the New Zealand Warriors. There’s plenty at stake as the winner remains in contention for the minor premiership while the loser will likely end up in third or fourth position. The Warriors come into this game having escaped from Campbelltown with a 20-16 win over lowly Wests Tigers but historically have struggled with the Panthers having lost their past three games including 34-20 earlier in the season. In team news, Brent Naden replaces Filino in the centres while Corey Harawira-Naera’s shift to the centres sees Chris Smith go back to the bench, which allows Junior Kiwi James FisherHarris to start in the back-row.

deally at this point in the season we would be building towards a finals campaign, not counting down to Round 26, but if you think there is nothing left to play for, you’re dead wrong. The way the players and staff prepared and performed on the weekend was a massive example of that. As well as trying to make Nigel Plum’s 150th NRL game a memorable one, there are so many ripple effects that arise from finishing strong. Whether it be finishing the half, game or season strong, the confidence it brings to whatever challenge lies next is so important. The last two seasons we have finished in particularly strong fashion. In Round 26, 2013, the Panthers played Manly at Brookvale with the Sea Eagles destined for the finals as our season drew to a close. At the best of times Brookie is a tough place to win at but the boys rallied and got a gritty victory – the ripple effect being the team bounced into pre-season confident for the year ahead. The end of 2014 was obviously a great finish, beating the Roosters in the semifinal, which no one gave us a shot at winning. To come within one win of a

Josh Mansour. Photo: 77 Media Grand Final left the team’s confidence at an all-time high. This no doubt helped the team immensely through pre-season and we jumped straight out of the blocks at the start of this season with three wins from four games. It’s not going to be easy over the next few weeks, with tough road trips to Wollongong and Canberra ahead of us, but that’s the way we like it. Also a big congratulations to Nigel Plum on his 150th NRL game and retirement – he was an absolute pleasure to play with. The biggest rap I can give the bloke is he made every team a much better defensive unit when his name was on the team sheet. With all the money the club is now going to save on strapping tape, we can build a new stadium. Thanks Plummy!

T
his time last week Penrith RSL employee, Patrick Silk, was nearing the end of an incredible journey along the Kokoda Trail as part of the Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge.
“The mental challenge we all endured was incredible, with stories of the young diggers fresh in our minds each day, there was plenty of motivation to get through the physical pain,” Patrick said.
Patrick is now home from his life changing adventure and is still reflecting on what he described as the best experience of his life.
The trek was an emotional journey that has been close to Patrick for a long time, with his father completing the trek some 10 years ago.
The weather was very kind to Patrick and his fellow trekkers as they took on some of the toughest terrain the world has to offer. With most days starting with a 4.45am wake up to eat, pack and start walking at 6.30am to reach their campsites by roughly 4pm each day.
“I am so grateful that Penrith RSL gave me the opportunity to do the Kokoda Trail, it was a dream come true.” He said.
The majority of days included intense uphill and downhill climbs, some climbs so tough they would take 3-4 hours to reach the peaks.
Penrith RSL has also sponsored another 5 young local people for the 2nd trek of the Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge next month; they leave on the 19th of August 2015. All images courtesy of Patrick Silk. WW15353

PENRITH SHOW
Carol is the voice of the Penrith Show in 2015 arol Heuchan is a lady of many hats. She has been a professional horsewoman for most of her life, training riders and show horses and competing successfully in 34 Royal Easter Shows. She is also a highly qualified national judge and has judged internationally. In 2003 her first book was published and led her to the world of bush poetry, which she took by storm, amassing a swag of awards. Twice Australian champion and nine times Laureate Award winner, and with five books and five CDs (all award winning), she is the winner of the richest prize in poetry history (a $34,000 tractor!). Carol has been on the winning team in the World Poetry Debate and has been a part of numerous

Australia-wide radio programs and featured in an ABC television series ‘Bush Slam’ shown several times on national prime-time television. In January 2015, she left for her sixth US/Canada concert performance tour. Needless to say, she is in great demand as an entertainer, writer, guest speaker, judge of horses and poetry, compere and announcer. She brings a ‘breath of fresh air’ to the Sydney Royal Easter Show where she has been the main arena commentator for the last five years. Her long association with and passion for Agricultural shows (even serving on the committee for this very show over 40 years ago) and her talent at the microphone will make this Penrith Show worth listening to!

Come and see the animals A popular spot at the Penrith District Show with the young and the young at heart is the Animal Farm Nursery. We would like to welcome Rhonda Hall, the principal of All Animals – Animal Farm Nursery, who is again organising this year’s display. Rhonda will have many new animals at the show as well as the old favourites. With over 20 years experience, Rhonda said her main aim is to let
children relate to animals in the most positive way. It also gives children a chance to groom, feed and care for a great variety of animals, teaching them respect for all creatures and minimises the chance of accidents, Rhonda said. The kids will experience some great memories if they check it out! Pop by and see the animals during your visit to the Penrith Show.

At this year’s Penrith District Show we are again privileged to have Ray Lincoln, a fourth generation blacksmith in Australia, entertaining the public with his blacksmithing talents. Mr Lincoln has been working with hot
coals and glowing red iron since he was 14 years of age at his father’s Bankstown shop in 1942. He is somewhat of a celebrity blacksmith, delighting people young and old with his humorous yet educational routine at the various country shows in New South Wales. He has been a regular face at the Sydney Royal where he has become a popular attraction after exhibiting in the Carlton Clydesdale Horse Stables for the past 45 years. Come and visit Ray as he demonstrates his trade throughout the Show and toils over a coal fire and anvil with his tools with steelwork.

The working dog demonstration has always been popular at the Penrith Show. Stock dogs are used on farms for all types of stock handling including working cattle, sheep, goats and even poultry. For the demonstration at the show short haired Collies based on New Zealand blood lines are used for their ability to work rather than their type or colour. During the demonstration you will see a demonstration of the dogs’ natural instincts and raw talents.

Whether you want to eat, drink, stay or play we are YOUR WORLD OF ENTERTAINMENT!
Woodchopping is a must-see One of Australia’s oldest professions, and one of the Penrith district’s favourite sports in earlier times, is again one of the star attractions at this year’s Penrith District Show. In the early days no-one thought of woodchopping as a sport, just another novelty show attraction. Brawny, hard-drinking axemen took part in informal contests, but there were no rules as such. Gradually rules did evolve and by the beginning of the century, woodchopping became established as an important event at any big show in Australia and New Zealand. Proudly sponsored by Panthers World of Entertainment.
Reptile World will amaze the kids of the world’s most venomous snakes in complete safety at this year’s Show. Take the opportunity to pat some of the lizards or a python before each exciting show starts and learn about Australia’s unique reptiles. Proudly sponsored by Emu Signs.

Sam keeps the kids laughing KATE REID @kate_reid6
M
ost people will know Sam Moran as the Yellow Wiggle who was let go from the group in 2012 after the return of original Yellow Wiggle Greg Page. After the controversy surrounding his departure, Sam reassessed what he wanted to do with his career and eventually decided to continue with children’s entertainment. “To be honest it’s what I love doing and it’s what I’m good at doing,” Sam said. “The path has always led me down that way and I really wasn’t finished doing it.” In 2013 Sam teamed up with Nickelodeon’s sister channel Nick Jr. for a new
preschool series ‘Play Along With Sam’ which is about to film its fourth season. This return to children’s entertainment was inspired by the fans Sam had gathered during his time with The Wiggles, first as an understudy and then as a permanent member of the group. “The support that I got through that time, through families, was certainly the encouraging factor to help me to actually continue to do what it was that I was doing,” he said. While children’s entertainment can often come across as quite simplistic, Sam explains that there’s a lot more thought that goes into it than many people might realise. “Some people see it as dumbing adult stuff down to be child’s entertainment, but it’s not like that, children really think completely differently,” he said. “At every moment I’m always thinking
about what’s in it for the child. It’s a lot of self assessment of what you’re doing and who your audience is.” For Sam going from working with a group to being the star of the show has had its pros and cons. “It’s liberating in some ways but also restricting that you don’t have people to bounce things off and go back and forth,” he said. “I remember the first day of filming I stood in front of the camera and I was like ‘do I even remember how to do this’,” he laughed. “But as soon as they called action it was straight back into it.” Sam will be bringing ‘Play Along With Sam’ to Rooty Hill RSL this September. The school holiday show will be a chance for kids to get into their fancy dress outfits and enjoy a few hours of fun, laughter and silliness, plus the opportu-
nity to be involved in the show. Along with his work on ‘Play Along With Sam’, Sam has also appeared in productions of ‘Mary Poppins’ and ‘Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’. “That’s been a great thing to do just from time to time to really break up what I do,” he said. Throughout all his work in the industry, for Sam it’s ultimately the fun and playfulness of children’s entertainment that he really loves. “Most of the time when I’m filming a new series I quite often at the end of a take will just shake my head and think ‘what am I doing’,” he laughed. “That’s why I like doing what I do, I get to be downright silly sometimes.” ‘Play Along With Sam’ will be on at Rooty Hill RSL on Wednesday, September 23 at 11am. Tickets are $20. To purchase tickets visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au.

Ê Channel Seven will air a new telemovie this September about the life of legendary Aussie entertainer Peter Allen. ‘Peter Allen: Not The Boy Next Door’ was written by Justin Monjo and Michael Miller and will star NIDA graduate Joel Jackson as the boy from Tenterfield whose music took him to the USA. BOOK Fracture: Life and Culture in the West 1918 to 1938 Philipp Blom // JADE ALIPRANDI Fracture: Life and Culture in the West 1918 to 1938 is one for the history buffs. Author Philipp Blom argues World War I was what defined the 20 years that followed it and potentially set the west up for destruction. With cautionary tales from soldiers in the form of letters and poetry among others, Fracture tugs at the heart strings. A period of disillusionment as well as innovation, Blom covers just about every topical element of post-war and pre-war, something I have never come across before. Blom recalls the desperate times for those in the west when racism and
xenophobia were at their peak. It’s not necessarily new information but if you want to look at the whole picture from each and every angle then Fracture is one for you to pick up. Fracture is a book I couldn’t stay away from and even if the big, bulky style is not your normal desire, you might be taken by surprise. It’s a vivid recreation of an era that certainly defined our world today. Blom has put together a compelling book and it’s certainly a must read for all interested in this genre of writing. Check it out!

Dead Letter Circus Aesthesis // KATE REID
This is the third album for Brisbane band Dead Letter Circus, who are one of the few acts that are still making music after the peak of Aussie alternative/ progressive rock in the 2000s. As a huge fan of the genre I feel pretty confident in saying that this album will most likely tick all the boxes for those who love Dead Letter Circus and their former and current contemporaries. While ‘Aesthesis’ has the heavy instrumentals and intricate soundscapes that define the prog rock genre, it also perfectly showcases the heavy lyrical themes that are at the heart of what Dead Letter Circus does best. Songs like the anthemic ‘While You Wait’ explore war and government control, while the eerie track ‘Silence’ addresses the issue of child abuse. Overall ‘Aesthesis’ is another amazing album from ‘Dead Letter Circus’.

‘Cake’ is a must-watch movie until the very end. Claire (Jennifer Aniston) becomes fascinated by the suicide of a woman, Nina (Anna Kendrick), in her chronic pain support group. While dealing with her own tragedy and loss, Claire makes a point to find Nina’s husband to get answers about Nina’s suicide and manages to strike up a relationship with him in the process. You see Jennifer Aniston in a whole
new light in ‘Cake’ and while it’s hard to believe her as Claire from the beginning, she really comes into the role about half way through when the deeper story is revealed. With a trail of broken relationships, a devastating loss, and suffering from chronic pain, Claire is a troubled individual and Aniston brings plenty to the role. She’s a definite stand-out and fans of the hit television show ‘Friends’, for
which Aniston is best known, will find her barely recognisable here. Sam Worthington plays Nina’s husband Roy and while he brings plenty to the role, he at times seemed to lack the raw emotion one would expect from a grieving husband. Anna Kendrick is also presented in a new light, like Aniston. Although I would have liked to see more of her, she took on the role with grace and told Nina’s story beautifully from the side. It seems like there was more to the story and if we found out the reason behind Claire’s anger, depression and drug use earlier in the piece, we would have been given more of Aniston in one of the best roles of her career. It’s a beautifully told story of a woman who has been to hell and back while suffering deeply, and on the exterior, but manages to eventually come to terms with her condition. Aniston is the absolute stand-out in a film that demonstrates pain, anger and sadness in a unique and special way. Make sure you have tissues handy.

Slow charcoal cooking and smoking meat is becoming very popular! Here is my go-to dry rub for slow charcoal cooking or smoking. I like to rub it on while the meat is cold, leave it out to come to room temperature (2-3 hours) then give it some more rub. Porcini powder can be found at most big European fruit shops. This would also work in a low heat oven, try using fattier cuts of meat like shoulder for best results.

HOW DID THE BAND FORM? This solo project started two years ago when western Sydney four piece, The Trobes, went heavier and more riff-based in sound, leaving Anthony Silvestrini with three acoustic guitars and a heap of pop songs that needed to find a home. INFLUENCES: Crowded House, The Beatles, Wilco, Bob Evans, Gotye. WHERE CAN PEOPLE HEAR YOUR MUSIC? emptyfishtank.bandcamp.com/music WHERE CAN PEOPLE SEE YOU PLAY? Generally around western Sydney. No gigs planned for the near future but keep up to date on Facebook. I’m mainly focusing on recording my second album at the moment which is pretty exciting.

MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
Rambunctious Rams are ready to rock-and-roll, as the Sun/Jupiter conjunction boosts your stamina and energy levels. So all forms of physical exercise are favoured this week. You’re also full of fiery enthusiasm about a work project or domestic matter, but don’t jump to half-baked conclusions.
TAURUS
Moore
HOROSCOPES
With Venus reversing through your domestic zone, you need to do more to create harmony and happiness. And with Saturn sauntering through your relationship zone, it’s time to re-assess a rickety romance or fractured friendship. Lay your cards on the table, as you talk through difficult issues.
GEMINI
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
This week sunny Sagittarians are ready to shine! Your ruling planet Jupiter joins up with the Sun in your public zone, so there’s much to look forward to as you attract good luck, acknowledge a success or celebrate a major milestone. The weekend Full Moon also lights up your domestic zone.
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
Jupiter is moving through Virgo [until September 2016] so make the most of the energy boost it provides. It’s also your luckiest week of the year, as the Sun and Jupiter join up in your sign. But – in order to attract good fortune into your world – you have to be braver and bolder than usual.
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
What’s the hurry? Others are rushing around but you don’t feel the need for speed. The Mercury/Saturn sextile helps you concentrate on mental tasks; finalise projects; and micro-manage to the max – all in a thorough and fastidious way. You’re a cautious Capricorn, so a slow and steady pace suits you just fine!
LIBRA
MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
You’re in a flirtatious mood, as you dazzle others with your Gemini generosity and geniality. But with Venus reversing through your communication zone pick the people you flirt with carefully. Encouraging a family member to achieve their personal best sees you take on the role of mentor or teacher.
CANCER
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
Librans can be indecisive. But – if you avoid issues – then they’ll be taken out of your hands and other people will end up making decisions for you. Which will leave you feeling powerless and paralysed. The weekend Full Moon highlights health, diet and exercise plus emotional and spiritual wellbeing.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
The stars shine a spotlight on your current career or future job prospects. Don’t sell yourself short … show others that you can handle stressful situations and extra responsibilities with plenty of aplomb. The weekend Full Moon stimulates your money zones, so it’s not a good time to go on a shopping spree.

Proud Lions love to pounce! But this week’s stars encourage you to get the balance right between thinking things through carefully, and grabbing opportunities when they come along. The Sun joins up with prosperity planet Jupiter, so good fortune is on your side. Be patient for lucky opportunities to manifest.

You’ll be tempted to make vague promises this week, but don’t commit to future projects unless you’re sure you have the time and energy to follow through on your well-meant intentions. Mercury moves into your family zone on Thursday, so Friday through to Sunday is the time to get talking with your nearest and dearest.
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
With Jupiter in your hopes and wishes zone, be proactive about creating your preferred future. Positive changes are coming that see you take on a leadership role, as you focus on projects that make your Scorpio heart sing. Expect a creative and chaotic weekend, especially involving children, teenagers or friends.
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
A close relationship improves mid-week, as the Sun/Jupiter conjunction boosts goodwill and positive feelings between the two of you. But you can too easily procrastinate; fret over the past; or waste time worrying about the future. This weekend’s Full Moon encourages you to focus your energy on the here and now.

Blocked bladders in pet cats
Practice owner of Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic and the Western Sydney Cat Hospital
Often, this can look like constipation so it is important to seek immediate veterinary attention if your cat is going to the litter tray more often and hunching over in pain. A blocked bladder can be very painful and some cats will vocalise loudly and stop eating. In the more advanced stages of the disease, a urinary obstruction can also cause vomiting, lethargy and life threatening renal failure.
There are several causes of urinary obstruction and sometimes these can be difficult to predict. Most commonly obstructions occur due to an accumulation of minerals in the bladder that form little stones or plugs. It can also be caused by urinary tract infections and less commonly lesions in the bladder such as a tumour. Cats that have a urinary obstruction require emergency treatment. An anaesthetic is generally required so that a catheter can be passed into the urinary tract to relieve the obstruction. The bladder is thoroughly flushed and drained; and typically a urinary catheter is left in place for a few days while having the cat on a drip to encourage urine flow. Blood tests are also generally performed to make sure there has been no damage to the kidneys. In extreme circumstances, bladder surgery may be required. Not every blocked bladder can be prevented. But, there is a well documented link between stress and urinary disease. High levels of stress in cats can cause a sterile bladder infection and this can lead to a blocked bladder. Cats should always be encouraged to drink lots of water as this keeps the urine more dilute.

It was several years ago, in an advertising campaign for a major credit card company, where several quotes about life were made to encourage people take up and use this credit card. One of the quotes was “It is more blessed to give than to receive”. With every other quote that was used, the name of the person who said it was given. For this one, the advertisement simply said “unknown”. That is quite tragic, because if the advertisers had done

and over again, ultimately, even giving his life, so that you and I, when we put our trust and confidence in him, following him with our lives, can have eternal life, real life with God forever. It was once said, in the movie ‘Wall Street’, that “Greed is Good”, and while most of us know that this is not true, we struggle to live it out in our day to day lives. Jesus, with these simple nine words tells us that despite what the advertisers might say, life is not about getting or having more and more. Because God has given so generously to us, it is more blessed to give to others of our time, our energy and our resources. It is more blessed to give than to receive – challenging, but true!
a little more research, they would have discovered that these words were spoken by Jesus! And as usual with everything that Jesus said, here in these few words from the Bible’s book of Acts, Jesus perfectly summarises a big life truth – “It is more blessed to give than to receive”. When we look at Jesus’ life, this is all he ever did; Jesus totally gave of himself, over

Urinary obstructions in cats is unfortunately something that we see often as vets. Male cats can develop an obstruction of the urethra which is the small tube that drains urine out of the bladder. It is rare in females as they have a much wider urethra and can generally pass urine easier than males. A urinary obstruction can occur in cats that have inflammatory changes in their bladder; this may be due to blood in the urine, stones or infection. Generally the first sign of a urinary obstruction is straining to urinate.

LEGAL MATTERS
Do you know what the law says about fences dividing neighbouring properties from each other? Here is a snapshot of how fencing laws work: • Typically adjoining neighbours are jointly responsible for the costs of constructing a dividing fence and for its maintenance and upkeep • Where there is conflict about the suitability or quality of a dividing fence, the rule is that the fence must be “sufficient” • When considering if a dividing fence is sufficient
Fences can divide more than property
COMPLETE L E G A L & C O N V E YA N C I N G
Complete Legal & Conveyancing 4704 9991 Suite 11, 354 High Street Penrith
regard must be had to the state of the existing fence, the purpose for which the adjoining land is being used, the privacy of adjoining co-owners, the type of fences typically used in the area as well as council/other regulations • If one neighbour wants a fence that is above and beyond what is considered a “sufficient” fence then that neighbour will
usually be liable for the difference in cost between a “sufficient” fence and the more advanced fence they wish to build • If you own a property and your neighbour is refusing to contribute to the costs of constructing a dividing fence or repairs to an existing fence that is not sufficient, you must provide them with a written fencing notice before you complete any work if you want to recover some of the costs from them • If you issue a fencing notice (or you have one issued to you) and no agreement can be reached, the matter can be determined by the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal or the Local Court, who will make a binding decision on the matter Fencing disputes are one of the most common sources of neighbourhood conflict. If you find yourself involved in a fencing dispute it is important that you seek expert advice to ensure that you comply with your obligations or you may risk legal action against you or be unable to recover any money you spend fixing or constructing a fence. Contact the team at Complete Legal and Conveyancing if you have a dividing fences issue you would like to discuss.

simply through increased food consumption. Unfortunately the necessity of products like protein shakes are often overemphasised purely as a way to sell products that offer no more benefit than a glass of milk. People can also become confused as to protein’s role in the body. Consuming protein alone will not build muscle. The only way to do that is
I’m willing to bet a lot of money that my head never gets cut off by a terrorist and same for me catching Ebola. I would even make that bet to cover my friends and family. Yet I have clients and friends that are stressed out by what might happen to them by everything from terrorists to disease outbreaks to getting kidnapped on the train. Unfortunately I’m willing to make another bet, that stress and lifestyle diseases will kill them long before any armed, diseased terrorist

Walk down the health food aisle or past your local juice bar and you’ll find a staggering range of protein powders, shakes, balls, bars and cookies. Protein is the macronutrient du jour for those who are looking to build muscle. While it is true that protein is important for the growth and repair of cells, most people easily meet their protein requirements through food, making supplementation another unnecessary expense. Even those who work out frequently will achieve most of their daily protein needs

kidnaps them and chops them up. Recently I mentioned that over 90 per cent of diseases are caused or complicated by stress. Let’s pick just one, obesity. Stressed people also often use food and eating to feel better. A recent report shows the global cost of obesity has risen to $2.2 trillion annually – nearly as much as smoking or the combined impact
to follow a regular training regime designed to improve muscle strength. To ensure you get the best from your training it’s more important to focus on consuming a balanced diet rather than spending your hard earned money on protein shakes and supplements. Include protein rich foods such as eggs, milk, nuts, meat or yoghurt at each meal and don’t forget that the body’s main source of fuel is carbohydrates so it’s also important to consume a variety of carbohydrate rich foods throughout the day, including vegetables, fruits and wholegrains. Now I can understand that for some people protein shakes may purely be appealing for their convenience but it’s important to keep in mind that if your diet is already well balanced, your protein shake will just end up as expensive urine. So next time you pass the protein supplements, head to the outer aisles of the supermarket instead and grab a range of delicious wholefoods that will offer all the nutrients your body needs to get the most out of your training regime. You’ll probably save a few dollars by doing this as well! See you next week.
of armed violence, war and terrorism. Obesity isn’t just a health issue, it’s a major economic and business challenge. About 2.1 billion people or 30 per cent of the global population are overweight or obese. As countries get richer, the rate of obesity rises to the same level as that found in more developed countries. There’s no single or simple solution to the problem, but global disagreement on how to move forward is hurting progress. It’s a pity the news programs spreading the fear of the latest story that affects a few people aren’t spreading the news of how we might work towards a solution on fixing a problem that affects everyone. But I’m guessing the media companies’ advertising contracts might not go so well if they started saying ‘don’t drink Coke’. There are studies that show stress is actually an easy way to get people to buy more. I wish people would switch off the tabloid news and actually open their eyes to what is really going on. Next time I’m on a train I would happily sit next to a Muslim with ‘I’ve been to Africa’ stamped on his luggage way before I’d sit next to the smart suited CEO of some profits over health driven company. Stay healthy.

GREAT FUN
6000 to attend family event in Penrith p.76
Penrith opens its arms to Vanuatu cricket team Kevin Geyer and John Rennie have welcomed the Vanuatu cricket team to Penrith this week. Photo: Megan Dunn NATHAN TAYLOR
@natetaylor87
ocals will have the opportunity to watch two very exciting and unique games of cricket this weekend when the Vanuatu national cricket team comes to town. 20 members of the Vanuatu national side arrived in Penrith on Wednesday evening as part of a week-long stay that will see them attend various events including a Golf Day at Leonay Golf Club, a Civic Reception at Emu Sports Club as well as participate in two games of cricket at Howell Oval. Organiser of the tour, John Rennie, said
L
his company, Sommers Sportswear, was contacted earlier this year by the coach of the Vanuatu cricket team asking if they could assist with sponsorship. “I was approached immediately following Cyclone Pam, which virtually devastated the country back in March this year,” he said. “We tried to work out how we could help and decided to assist them in supplying their cricket gear for the next three years. “We also wanted to help out with their development, so we organised to bring them out to Australia to play a couple of matches here.” This Saturday, August 22 from 12pm, Vanuatu will take part in a Celebrity T20
match against a number of recognisable faces including rugby league greats Lote Tuqiri and Wendell Sailor, comedian Tim “Rosso” Ross, Seven News reporter Lee Jeloscek, Penrith Cricket Club president Paul Goldsmith as well as top local female cricketers Mikayla Hinkley and Naomi Stalenberg. On Sunday, August 23 at 9.30am, Vanuatu will return to the Howell Oval crease to face a Penrith XI invitational side, which will feature local players from first and second grade. Spectators are welcome to attend both games with entry free. “Both matches will be open for people to come down and watch. The Celebrity
match, in particular, will be a fun game to see,” Mr Rennie said. Vanuatu will be officially welcomed to Penrith tonight (Friday, August 21) with a Civic Reception at Emu Sports Club. Funds raised from this evening’s event will go directly towards the Vanuatu Cricket Association. The team will depart Australia on Wednesday, bound for the Netherlands and England where they’ll compete in a Cricket World Cup qualifier to help improve their national ranking. “Some of these blokes have never been out of Vanuatu before… they’ll be tickled pink for what we are doing for them,” Mr Rennie said.

Fox nominated for major award SHE’S won plenty of medals during her relatively short career, now Leonay’s Jessica Fox will be looking to add a very special accolade to her long list of achievements. Recently, the 21-year-old Olympic silver medallist was announced as a Sports Woman of the Year nominee for the upcoming Women’s Health ‘I Support Women in Sport’ Awards. Now in their fifth year, the awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of Australia’s female athletes – from a grassroots level through to professional. “Australia produces the best female athletes in the world,” Acting Editor of Women’s Health magazine, Rachelle Macintosh said. “With the Olympic Games not too far away, these awards are synonymous with recognising the successes of the country’s female sporting greats in the public eye.” Joining Fox as a nominee is acclaimed basketballer Lauren Jackson, champion Ironwoman Liz Pluimers, Olympic cyclist Anna Meares and surfing sensation Stephanie Gilmore. Winners will be determined by public vote as well as via an esteemed panel of judges which includes Olympian Sally Pearson and commentator Mark Beretta. To vote, visit womenshealthmag. com.au.

The Donut Dash, Big Blob Balls and Bubble Blast: That’s our kind of obstacle race NATHAN TAYLOR

ore than 6000 parents and children are set to take part in an obstacle adventure full of colour, fun and guaranteed laughs when Little Big Dash is held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre this Sunday, August 23. This new, fun event will feature teams of two to six people exploring 10 colourful obstacle stages together including dancing through the Donut Dash, dodging the Big Blob Balls, navigating through the Bubble Blast, tackling the giant Rumble Tumble Tower and enjoying a new inflatable Footy Frenzy stage. Former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee said he was delighted to be the ambassador for Little Big Dash. “I love being a big kid and this event gives me the opportunity to live in the moment and release that inner-child while having heaps of fun helping a parent-child team through each stage,” he said. “There will be prizes for dressing up, so we encourage all ‘Dashers’ to find some fun and quirky matching outfits to wear.” The event is created to be completed in family teams with kids taking part to be aged between five and 15-years-old. At the end, ‘Dashers’ will collect their

Families will take part in the Little Big Dash in Penrith on Sunday souvenir shirts and stamp them with their hand prints, creating a unique memento of their adventure. “What a great way to spend a Sunday morning with your family,” Lee said. “As Dashers enjoy the carnival atmosphere, they will be left smiling with
elation from a great time shared.” Little Big Dash officially sold out last week but is expected to return next year after record numbers registered to participate. The event is also held in Brisbane where it is just as popular.

Fox on track after success in France World Championships are Jessica’s next goal after claiming two more World Cup silver medals NATHAN TAYLOR
@natetaylor87
eonay’s Jessica Fox picked up two sliver medals in the final ICF World Cup in Pau, France last weekend. The 21-year-old finished second in both the women’s C1 and K1 finals after enduring what’s said to be the most challenging slalom course of the entire World Cup campaign. In the C1 final, Fox finished 1.59 seconds behind Spanish paddler Nuria Vilarrubla who won in 124.26. “I had to fight hard to recover after a mistake between gates 19 and 20, and I am relieved that I held the run together after that, the rest of the run was not so bad,” Fox said. “The course is really tough and hard on the arms.” Fox won the World Cup series title after topping the standings on 318 points, 72 clear of Czech paddler Katerina Hoskova and Austrian Viktoria Wolffhardt a point back in third. Meanwhile, Fox’s second silver medal came during the women’s K1 final later that weekend. With double points on offer, the second

place finish elevated the local paddler to second on the overall standings behind joint winners Slovakia’s Jana Dukatova and Austria’s Corinna Kuhnle. On a tough course, Fox produced a clean run in the final but fell agonisingly short of victory, finishing just 0.37 seconds behind Olympic champion Emilie Fer of France who won in 103.53. Despite missing out on the gold, Fox remained upbeat. “I am really happy with that run and with second place,” Fox said. “It was a really tight race, a tough course and a tough weekend with the C1 yesterday but I am really happy with the way that I paddled and to finish the World Cup series in second, it motivated me and encourages me for the Worlds in a month.” This year’s World Championships will be held from September 16 to 20 and will also double as Olympic qualification. Coincidentally the World Championships will be held in London, with Fox set to embark on another Olympic campaign on the same course she won silver on in 2012. With the Olympics just a year away, Fox is keen to make her mark in London and begin her attempt to go one better than silver in Rio next year.

of the Local Hero Program, Burrabadine Christian School in Dubbo, and said the program provided a great opportunity for players to give back to the club’s youngest supporters. “Giving back to the community is something I’m very passionate about,” Blizzard said. “I grew up in the country so the access I had to elite-level cricketers was quite minimal, so to be able to go out there and see these kids, I can just imagine if I was in their shoes it would’ve made my day.” The big hitting Thunder batsman said the Thunder Local Hero Program provides a humbling experience for his team. “Getting to grassroots and getting out to the community is something I’ve really enjoyed in the past,” Blizzard said. Hadley brimming with pride after Australia wins netball’s biggest prize on home soil NATHAN TAYLOR
ander preferring a more experienced line-up. “Coming into the team late and not in the initial squad, I wasn’t expecting to get a lot of court time during the tournament, but to play six games was unreal,” Hadley said. “Before the final I said to mum that I wasn’t expecting to get on the court… I knew if I wasn’t going to play that I had to do my job elsewhere and that was cheering on my teammates. “I’m not disappointed, just being part of the 12 and playing as much as I did as a rookie was amazing.” The Netball World Cup was a huge success for Sydney, providing the local economy with 4000 domestic and international visitors which, in turn, delivered more than $6 million to NSW in visitor expenditure. Hadley, who is also a member of the NSW Swifts, said having the World Cup held in her home town was nothing short of special. “In the crowd I had aunties, uncles, cousins, nans – I was like ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe they are all here,’” she said. “For them to share that moment with me was pretty special and something I’ll probably never get to do again.” The next Netball World Cup will be held in England in 2019.

ocal netballer Paige Hadley is still on a high and in utter disbelief that she can call herself a Netball World Cup champion. The 21-year-old and her Australian Diamonds teammates took out netball’s biggest prize last Sunday following a whirlwind 10 days of action at Sydney Olympic Park. In a blockbuster final, played in front of a world record crowd of 16,752, the Diamonds overcame an early tournament loss to New Zealand to go on and defeat their arch rivals 58-55 in the all-important gold medal match. Speaking with the Weekender – albeit with a raspy voice from celebrating – Hadley said the entire Netball World Cup campaign was a thrilling experience and one she’ll never forget. “I’m actually looking at our medal right now and it’s so surreal, I can’t believe it actually happened,” she said. “The tournament absolutely flew by. I remember time going really slow before the World Cup started and then, before I knew it, I was home with that medal on Sunday. “It was by far the biggest and most amazing
