ho needs Hollywood when you’ve got Penrith Lakes?

Penrith is set to become a permanent production house for some of the world’s biggest blockbuster films under a massive new $150 million proposal that will put the city on the world map.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes confirmed changes to planning rules would be required to transform Penrith into a movie mecca.

“If approved, this 41-hectare precinct would include up to 10 production stages, filming tanks, construction and design facilities, as well as a film school,” Mr Stokes said.

“It would create up to 300 construction jobs over three years and once completed, the site would employ up to 2,000 people on major movie projects.”

The development would be made possible by a proposed amendment to the State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP) for Penrith Lakes, now on public exhibition.

The amendment also proposes an 18-hole golf course plus the heritage listing of the historic Landers Inn, enabling uses such as tourist accommodation.

A new heliport for Sydney Helicopters, currently based at Granville, would also form part of the plan.

13 more thoughts about COVID 1. The way the NSW Government announced the statewide lockdown on Saturday was nothing short of atrocious.

For Gladys Berejiklian to front the media at 11am and give no indication of such action, only for it to be announced via Twitter and Facebook a couple of hours later, showed total disrespect to those living in regional NSW. If the health advice did emerge after the press conference, the Premier should have addressed the state for a second time.

2. Health Minister Brad Hazzard continues to be one of the worst public performers during this pandemic. He was awful during the Ruby Princess and Newmarch House outbreaks, but he’s been at his worst during the Delta fight.

His rambling answers, offended tone and entitled approach is wearing thin.

3. One thing I’ve discovered in recent weeks is how confusing and all over the place the booking systems are for the COVID-19 vaccine. There’s not a single place you go to book a vaccination – there’s a whole bunch of different sites depending on the clinic you want to go to. Different booking systems are understandable when it comes to GP and pharmacist appointments, but for NSW Health to have multiple systems in play for their various clinics is confusing.

4. Talking of the vaccine, I got my first jab this week. And it felt bloody good.

5. We should never forget this outbreak is largely the fault of the government and its poor Health Orders. As much as they want to increase fines and dish out blame

every day to those “not doing the right thing”, they hold ultimate responsibility here. They let an unvaccinated driver transport air crew without a mask and vaccine. Have they ever actually issued a public apology for this?

6. Outdoor transmission is not a major factor of this outbreak, so further restricting exercise and recreation seems odd, especially as the weeks of lockdown roll on and on. To ask a Caddens or St Clair resident to wear a mask on a morning walk where they may not pass another soul seems a bit much when people clearly need to get out and enjoy some fresh air.

I’m not the biggest fan of Andrew Clennell’s approach at press conferences, but the Sky News reporter has some tough questions to ask and it’s becoming more and more evident Gladys Berejiklian doesn’t want to answer them. When the going got tough on Wednesday, she hit him with the old: “It’s not your press conference”.

11. Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews just can’t help himself when it comes to criticism of Sydney. “We don’t want to be like them” has become a common theme of his press conferences. It’s very odd, given Andrews has overseen the most and longest lockdowns of any Premier.

There’s also nothing short or sharp about the current Victorian lockdown.

8. NSW Labor Leader Chris Minns deserves praise for the way he’s handled the current crisis. He’s supported the government’s measures while pointing out if things need attention, such as the business support payments. I’m not sure the same can be said for his Federal counterpart Anthony Albanese. He’s too blinded by the possibility of becoming Prime Minister next year, and can’t help himself but push a negative narrative.

12. I’ve been impressed with NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant this week. After not fronting the media for a few days, she came back with some really tough messaging this week. It’s a grim job, and her level of concern is both legitimate and confronting.

Hospital situation “dire” Twin outbreaks at Nepean Hospital become major focus of health response TROY DODDS

A text message sent from NSW Health to patients confirms a person who attended the antenatal clinic on August 11 has since tested positive to COVID-19. NSW Health has been liaising with impacted patients.

Nepean Hospital has reported three deaths in patients with COVID-19 this week. Two were men in their 70s and one was a man in his 80s.

Disturbingly, 54 new COVID-19 cases were reported across the NBMLHD on Wednesday, significantly up from previous days.

12 suburbs in the Penrith Local Government Area remain listed as ‘areas of concern’ with residents subjected to tough rules including mask wearing outside and a 5km travel rule, including for groceries.

St Marys was listed as a significant area of concern for officials on Wednesday.

For those not in one of the 12 suburbs, the 10 kilometre rule has been reduced, with shopping, exercise and outdoor recreation to be done in a person’s LGA or, if outside their LGA, within five kilometres of home.

Increased fines now also exist with $5,000 penalties for breaching selfisolation rules, lying on a permit, lying

to contract tracers or breaching the two person outdoor exercise rule.

“The increased fines and heightened police presence are about ensuring people who are doing the wrong thing are caught and punished appropriately,” Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.

NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said case numbers across the State are too high and people needed to follow the stay-at-home orders.

“Every time you are out and about assume you have the infection or will come into contact with somebody who has the infection,” she said.

epean Hospital has become a major focus of the COVID outbreak in Sydney with dozens of cases now linked to two separate outbreaks at the health facility.

It comes as tough new rules are implemented in an effort to stop escalating case numbers, with the entire state now in lockdown.

A total of 39 positive COVID-19 cases have been reported in patients and staff at Nepean Hospital.

Off the record, nurses are describing the situation at the hospital as “dire” as numbers continue to escalate.

22 cases are linked to the Nepean Mental Health Centre outbreak, with 21 consumers and one staff member confirmed with COVID-19.

A further 17 cases are linked to an outbreak inside the hospital. This includes 12 patients and five staff members.

“Investigations are underway into how these transmissions occurred,” a Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD) spokesperson said.

“70 per cent of staff members at Nepean Hospital are fully vaccinated. Only fully vaccinated staff work in the COVID-19 wards and other high risk areas in the hospital.

“68 per cent of staff at Nepean Mental Health Centre are fully vaccinated.”

Nepean Hospital, including the Emergency Department, remains open.

“All NSW public hospitals have strict protocols in place to help protect staff, patients and visitors from COVID-19,” the spokesperson said.

“The hospital follows strict infection prevention and control measures, including personal protective equipment (PPE), face mask fit-testing, hand hygiene and thorough cleaning of all areas.

“To protect patients, visitors to the hospital continue to be limited to only those visiting for exceptional circumstances.”

UNIVERSITY OFFERS PEACE OF MIND TO STUDENTS AHEAD OF HSC EXAMS Western Sydney University (WSU) wants to alleviate some stress from HSC students applying to study next year.

The True Reward program provides students the chance to use their HSC subject results instead of their ATAR to gain entry to university next year.

WSU Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Barney Glover said it would

provide school leavers with some peace of mind during another challenging year and encourage them to successfully complete their exams.

“With the evolving COVID-19 situation continuing to have an impact on schooling, particularly at the moment in Greater Sydney, we want to be able to relieve students of some of their concerns or anxi-

eties about disrupted exam preparations and what this means for gaining entry into their preferred university course for next year,” Mr Glover said.

“By once again incorporating the option of using Year 11 results in the HSC True Reward early offer program as we did last year, we are helping to take some of the stress out of the application process, so

A new COVID-19 vaccination hub has opened in the Penrith Local Government Area (LGA) with the Caddens Baptist Church now offering the AstraZeneca jab.

The clinic opened on Monday.

Appointments are required, though some walk-in opportunities are also available.

“The Caddens clinic will support the uptake of vaccines in our local area,” said State Penrith MP Stuart Ayres.

“Now more than ever we need to stick together and do the right thing. Stay home, get tested and get vaccinated.”

The clinic at Caddens has the capacity to administer almost 3,000 vaccinations per week. Those receiving AstraZeneca at the Caddens clinic will receive their second dose between four to eight weeks after their first dose.

Federal Lindsay MP Melissa McIntosh welcomed the opening of the new clinic.

“Getting vaccinated protects yourself, your family and our community from this dangerous and highly transmissible virus. It’s the step we can all take to keep the ones we love safe,” Ms McIntosh said.

“I encourage everyone to check if you’re eligible, talk to your GP, and book an appointment to get vaccinated.”

In addition to the new clinic in Caddens, people aged between 16 and 39 living in the Penrith Local Government Area can now get the Pfizer vaccine at a brand new clinic to open at Panthers Leagues Club on Monday.

That’s on top of the thousands of authorised workers in this age group who have got the jab at the Nepean Hospital clinic this week.

While the authorised worker period was restricted to those living in the ‘suburbs of concern’ in the Penrith LGA, the new Panthers clinic will service residents from all suburbs.

Other LGAs of concern are also included in this rollout.

“We know there are several hundred thousand people in these LGAs who are unvaccinated in this age group, and this is a great opportunity for them to come forward and get their jab,” NSW Health Deputy Secretary Susan Pearce said.

everal Penrith private schools will offer some form of fee relief amid the current lockdown, as students and parents continue to juggle home schooling.

Remote learning has become the new normal for the vast majority of local students after Greater Sydney was plunged into lockdown in late June.

So far all of Term 3, which began on July 12, has been undertaken remotely, sparking weekly challenges for teachers, students and parents, many of whom are working from home and required to assist.

Despite this, only The Lakes Christian College has chosen to discount its tuition fees.

“We continue to have largely the same staffing and operating costs, despite most students doing their schooling from home, but we do want to support families in some measure as we are able,” Principal Darren Dick said.

“To that end, we have decided to process a 20 per cent tuition fee discount for Term 3 as a credit to each family’s account.”

Penrith Anglican College Principal Felicity Grima said plans were already in place for a reduction in the ‘service charge’ paid by College families.

In 2020, the College waived the term service charge, which is equivalent to a 20 to 25 per cent overall reduction, as well as the entire term’s Pre-K fees.

St Paul’s Grammar School also confirmed it would not charge its service fee, used to cover camps, excursions and other co-curricular activities during lockdown.

“In terms of tuition fees, no we don’t offer a reduction in regards to that because we’re offering a pretty comprehensive service to our students from Pre-K all the way to Year 12,” Principal Ian Wake said.

“While not as ideal as face-to-face, it’s pretty much a full tuition service in regards to what we are actually putting online.”

Penrith Christian School said it continued to provide education to its students, albeit not in the normal way due to the lockdown.

“The school has not planned to reduce fees while still offering education and learning to our students, and we are continuing to pay staff and operational expenses during this period of online learning,” Principal Tracey Deal said.

Rather than reducing its “moderate fees for all families”, a Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta spokeswoman said it would continue to “focus on helping those most impacted by the crisis”.

Penrith Council holds fire on flood legislation reforms

enrith Council has declined to implement reforms to floodplain planning legislation, preferring to wait until “critical” studies and flood evacuation modelling are completed.

Last year, the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) exhibited amendments known as the Flood Prone Land Package, which emphasised the importance of managing flood risk up to and beyond the 1 in 100-year flood, as well as considering flood risks up to the Probable Maximum Flood level.

In its submission last year, Council told DPIE the package was premature in the absence of other related works being completed, particularly within the Hawkesbury Nepean catchment.

Despite this, DPIE proceeded with the delivery of the package, which provides for changes to NSW and local planning legislation, on July 14.

“As indicated in the report, Council believes it is prudent to wait for the release of the various bodies of work that are currently underway by Government agencies associated with the Hawkesbury Nepean catchment,” a Council spokesman said.

“We urge the various State agencies to

complete and release their critical work, and to work closely with catchment Councils.”

Council officers are concerned the package potentially exposes Council to risk, and will significantly increase the number of properties that will have a flood notation applied to it.

“We must ensure that we are consistent with State flood policies in order to retain our “good faith” protection,” the Council spokesman said.

“Ambiguities in State policy and/or lack of information is concerning for Council to be able to implement the recent changes.”

According to DPIE, the updated package gives councils more flexibility to make their own informed decisions on land planning and development controls in flood-prone areas.

“We have put safety and certainty at the heart of our updated flood-prone land planning and development rules and guidelines,” a DPIE spokesman said.

“With natural disasters more frequent and severe, communities need to increase their resilience through better planning, and these changes help to do that. We’re supporting careful development of flood-prone land which puts community safety first – it’s about keeping people and property safe.”

oolworths Metro has been confirmed as the anchor tenant for Glenmore Park’s newest shopping centre, with the supermarket expected to open in late 2023.

Woolworths Metro Property Manager Angus Stapleton said the supermarket giant was delighted to be part of the longawaited development, to be known as ‘Glenmore Village’.

“We are delighted to be part of the Glenmore Park development and excited local residents will have access to one of our newest neighbourhood food stores,” he said.

“We know customers are increasingly looking for convenient and healthy food choices and we will be focusing on creating a store offer that is locally relevant to the Glenmore Park community.”

Woolworths Metro stores are smaller format neighbourhood stores tailored to local customers looking for a convenient walk-up offer.

While the range at Woolworths Metro Glenmore Store is yet to be confirmed, the

neighbourhood stores usually offer a mix of high quality locally produced fresh food and everyday pantry staples for customers looking for a quick and easy top-up shop.

The 1,345sqm store will anchor a mixeduse residential, commercial and retail development to be built on vacant land at 90-98 Glenmore Ridge Drive.

It comes as property development firm Beaini announced its recent acquisition of the land from property developer Mintus.

“Located in the heart of Glenmore Ridge and Mulgoa Rise, Glenmore Village will boast 145 luxury apartments, over approximately 8000sqm of retail and commercial floor space and is envisioned to be the one-stop destination for dining, services and shopping needs,” Director of Beaini Projects Mickey Beaini said.

Penrith: Woman charged after being found in stairwell of property A woman has been charged after trespassing in Penrith last week.

About 7pm on Monday, August 9, police were called to a premises on Thornton Drive, Penrith in relation to a person being there.

After conducting a search, officers located a 21-year-old woman inside the stairwell of the property.

The woman allegedly informed the police that she had been residing at the property for the previous few days.

Checks revealed that the information she supplied was not correct and she was arrested.

The woman was charged with ‘enter prescribed premises of any person without lawful excuse’.

She will appear in Penrith Local Court on Wednesday, September 1.

Kingswood: Man charged after road rage incident on Rogers Street A man has been charged after assaulting someone and causing malicious damage in Kingswood as a result of road rage.

About 6.10pm on Friday, August 13, police were called to Rodgers Street, Kingswood after a report of a road rage incident.

Officers spoke to a 37-year-old man who allegedly sustained injuries to his ribs and arms, and damage to his vehicle.

Police were then patrolling Bringelly Road, Kingswood and stopped a vehicle to speak with the driver.

The 36-year old St Clair man was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station, where he was charged with ‘destroy or damage property’ and ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’.

He was granted bail and will appear in Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, August 31.

Stopping the group, officers spoke to a 27-year-old St Marys man during which he provided false details to police.

The man was arrested, and allegedly attempted to run from police.

After a short foot pursuit, the man was detained and resisted police.

He was taken to Penrith Police Station and charged with ‘resist or hinder police officer in execution of duty’ and ‘not comply with noticed direction’.

The man was bail refused and was scheduled to appear in Penrith Local Court on Thursday, August 19.

Kingswood: Woman kidnapped and assaulted over several days A man has been charged after a woman was allegedly kidnapped and held at a Kingswood home for two days earlier this month.

About 1am on Saturday, August 14, officers from Nepean Police Area Command responded to Kingswood Railway Station, where a 29-year-old woman was found suffering facial and leg injuries.

Police were told the woman had been held at a Kingswood home for two days and physically assaulted with a pole and frying pan before she was able to escape and notify police.

She was taken to hospital where she was in a stable condition.

Detectives commenced an investigation and as part of inquiries a warrant was executed on a home on Joseph Street, Kingswood.

The occupants, a 23-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man, were arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station.

The man was charged with ‘take/detain person with intent to obtain advantage occasion actual bodily harm’.

He was refused bail and appeared at Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday, August 14.

The woman was later released pending further investigations. Inquiries continue.

TENANTS, LANDLORDS SHOULD TALK The NSW Government has announced that it will reintroduce the National Cabinet’s mandatory Code of Conduct for Commercial Leasing until at least January 13 2022.

The Regulation will apply to tenants of Commercial and Retail Leases with revenue of up to $50,000,000 who also qualify or have qualified for the Business COVID-19 Grant, COVID-19 Micro Business Grant, or JobSaver payments.

The Regulation is not yet available for review, but assuming it is a carbon copy of its predecessor, it will include the following: 1. A temporary ban on evictions/ lockouts unless parties have first renegotiated rent and attempted mediation.

2. A requirement that landlords provide rent relief to tenants proportionate to any decline in the tenant’s revenue.

3. A requirement that rent relief be in the form of at least a 50 per cent waiver with the balance being deferred (paid later).

It is also important to consider the plight of landlords. A landlord who cannot pay their mortgage is no better than a tenant who cannot pay their rent, and not all landlords are wealthy property barons – to the contrary, many rely on the rent generated from their investments to live and/or have poured their hard-earned superannuation into commercial property investments to fund their retirement.

Accordingly, the Government will also offer relief of up to 100 per cent of an eligible landlord’s land tax liabilities for the current year. To be eligible, landlords must demonstrate that they have provided rent relief to impacted tenants of at least the sum of money being claimed in their land tax liability exemp-

tion application. A hardship fund of circa $40,000,000 is also being established to provide monthly grants of up to $3,000 for landlords who provide waivers of rent to tenants subject to eligibility criterion.

Importantly, the Government is seeking to offset the rent forgone with tax relief and grants to ensure that landlords are not caught holding the bag on their own when it comes to the reintroduction of the Code.

We act for many commercial tenants and many commercial landlords in our practice. Our experience has been that the parties who achieve the best outcomes in these situations are those who communicate openly and regularly.

Most commercial tenancies are under the management of a competent real estate agent. Whether you are a landlord or a tenant, we recommend that you contact your agent to begin the discussion about rent relief.

An open dialogue between landlord and tenant is far more likely to achieve an outcome everyone can live with than one or both of the parties burying their heads in the sand to aovid conflict.

If you are a tenant, before you ask for rent relief sit down and do your sums to work out what the decline in your turnover has been and compile evidence (e.g. sales reports/BAS/P&Ls).

If you are a landlord, do your own sums and see what kind of rent relief you are able to offer.

The Government has also introduced a 60-day freeze on evictions for nonpayment of rent in relation to residential tenancies from July 14 2021 until September 11 2021. Given the fact that the current lockdown does not look like ending any time soon it is possible this window will be extended. Grants are also available to eligible residential landlords who offer rent relief for tenants.

CRAFT BEER LOVERS TO BE DELIGHTED WITH NEW PENRITH BREWERY Penrith’s small craft beer scene looks set to grow, with a new tap room proposed for Peachtree Road.

Squinters Brewing Co has lodged a Development Application (DA) to transform an industrial warehouse into a brewery and associated restaurant and bar.

Owned by four local boys with a passion for craft beer, the tap room is hoped to

be up-and-running in the next six to 12 months.

“The plan is to grow it into a fully functioning little brew pub-style venue,” co-owner Mat Goss said.

“We will probably eventually have our own restaurant-type offering but to begin with it will be a location for food trucks.”

It comes as Rusty Penny Brewing Co,

which produces craft beverages for wholesale, takeaway and consumption on site, received the green light to expand its business, with a new microbrewery, distillery and smoke house approved for an industrial unit on Coreen Avenue, Penrith.

The business, which has an existing brewery on Dean Place, has been operating in the Penrith area since 2018 and has

grown organically over the past two years, prompting the expansion.

Friends behind the scenes, both Squinters and Rusty Penny will hold tastings and tours for the general public.

“In the future, they’ll have a bigger venue and we’ll have a little one and they will sort of feed off each other just like any little restaurant precinct,” Mr Goss said.

Crucial hazard reduction burns will begin at Mitchell’s Pass today with road closures in place for the remainder of the weekend.

Rural Fire Service (RFS) Blue Mountains District Superintendent Nick Medianik said the 85-hectare burn forms part of the RFS’s mosaic burning program for the management of the eastern escarpment, with burning to begin at about 10am or 11am on Friday.

“We’re looking at 72 hours of total execution time, a bit over 48 hours of active burning,” he said.

“We’ll obviously have a number of fire resources in there, including aerial incendiary and water bucketing as well.”

Superintendent Medianik acknowledged the community would be affected by smoke.

“We’re very mindful of the impact that creates, which is why we try to schedule these when the atmospheric conditions are conducive to the disbursement of that smoke as soon as possible,” he said.

“Those with any respiratory problems should speak to their GP or health professional in relation to how they manage that, and as best as possible, keep their windows and doors closed and air-conditioning on recirculate.”

Old Bathurst Road will be closed throughout the duration of the burn, with hard road closures at Gosling Street, Emu Heights and the junction of Bowaga Avenue and Yoolgali Terrace, East Blaxland.

Mitchell’s Pass will be closed from the Lennox Bridge, however the car parking and visitor area to the Knapsack Bridge will remain open.

“Old Bathurst Road will be closed for those 72 hours and have a significant impact on traffic in and out of the area,” Superintendent Medianik said.

“Although under the current COVID restrictions, there shouldn’t be a lot of people moving... but we ask that people are patient.

“We’re looking at quite a severe fire season in the grassland areas.”

Not just a house, but a path to finding a childhood cancer cure EMILY FESZCZUK

ew houses are popping up all over Mulgoa Sanctuary in Glenmore Park but one special build that has kicked off this week will directly help fight childhood cancer.

Children’s Cancer Institute has rallied the community for its Build for a Cure initiative, where a dream home will be built and 100 per cent of the auction proceeds will be donated towards cancer research.

Children’s Cancer Institute Chief Marketing and Fundraising Officer, Anne Johnston said the organisation is fortunate enough to have generous partners that are making the project a reality.

“What is incredible is every single element is donated, so the amazing Wearn family from Mulgoa Quarries and Mulgoa Sanctuary have donated a 900 square metre plot of land in the stunning estate,” Ms Johnston said.

“The beautiful luxury home is from McDonald Jones Homes, the bricks are from Austral, the tradies are all doing their work for nothing, the suppliers are donating everything… it is fantastic.”

With the slab down and work underway, the four bedroom South Hamptons style house will be open to the public once complete, before going to auction in November.

“We are conscious of supporting COVID restrictions to keep the site safe so the build may take a little longer but it will be

a special home including a theatre, playroom for kids, two and a half bathrooms, and a study,” she said.

“Even if you are not in the market, you can support our work to cure every childhood cancer by buying a virtual brick in the house for a $20 donation at buildforacure. org.au.”

Director of Mulgoa Quarries, Rob Wearn, said it was terrific to be involved.

“This project is a true legacy for the Wearn family,” he said.

“Generous and caring” Tributes to couple found murdered as their son is charged over the crime EMILY FESZCZUK

T

he Penrith community is paying tribute to local couple Glenn and Susan Murray who were tragically found dead at their Oberon property last week.

The 68-year-old man and 66-year-old woman, who had relocated in recent years for their retirement, are alleged to have been stabbed to death by their son, Graeme Murray.

About 7.15am on Friday, August 13, emergency services responded to a home at On-Avon Avenue in Oberon, following concerns for the welfare of the couple.

Chifley Police District Acting Superintendent, Bruce Grassick told media on Friday that it was quite a “confronting” scene for police.

“It is quite tragic circumstances what transpired this morning, with police confronted by a deceased male and female, one towards the rear of the house and one in the kitchen area,” he said.

“There’s no indication, at this point, of a struggle but we’re still working on that scene.”

Following inquiries, officers from Nepean Police Area Command and Nepean Highway Patrol arrested the couple’s 46-year-old son on Jack Williams Drive, Penrith, about 8.50am the same

day. He was taken to Nepean Hospital under police guard to receive treatment for hand injuries, before being taken to Penrith Police Station on Sunday, August 15, where he was charged with two counts

of ‘murder (DV)’.

Following the shocking news, a GoFundMe page was started to support family members left behind, with nearly $15,000 raised so far.

Community members have posted tributes online about the beautiful couple that had their lives cut short including members of Nepean Rowing Club, where Mr Murray had worked.

Wife of the former Nepean Rowing Club CEO, Jacqui Hinvest said it still hasn’t sunk in to her ‘heartbroken’ family who were friends with the Murrays.

“They were generous and caring – you couldn’t meet a more down to earth couple. They were extremely proud of their family and built fiercely loyal friendships,” Ms Hinvest said.

“Glenn used to work with my husband Greg at the Rowing Club and when he passed away from cancer last year, Sue and Glenn were a great support to me and my family… we are blessed to have known them and we will never forget them.”

Graeme Murray faced Penrith Local Court on Monday, August 16, where the matter was adjourned until October 8.

President of Paying It Forward Homeless Services, Craig Smith said he was honoured to be included as a finalist.

“All of the other nominees are wonderful so it is an honour to be placed in the same circle, and would be even more amazing if we received a grant,” Mr Smith said.

They may obtain a certificate from a doctor, that it is not in their best interest to have a jab and we will respect that.

However the vast majority of the population also have rights.

We may wish not to mix or work with them, due to the risk they present. We need a formal system to identify those who have taken the opportunity to be protected. Non-complying people should not be allowed into any enclosed space such as sports arenas, offices, pubs and clubs, shopping centres, trains, aeroplanes, after a set date, say first of October. t’s that time of the year again to put on your walking shoes for a worthy cause, with registrations now open for STEPtember.

The virtual challenge calls on individuals, teams and organisations to take 10,000 steps per day for 30 days in an effort to raise funds that will improve the lives of people with cerebral palsy.

There are over 40 different activities that can be converted to steps, helping participants walk, swim, ride, wheel or spin their way to their daily goal.

Cerebral Palsy Alliance’s General Manager of Fundraising Lucy Jacka encouraged people of all ages and abilities to get a team together and take on the challenge.

Cerebral palsy is the most common physical disability in children, and in

Australia accounts for one in every 700 births.

Cerebral palsy is an umbrella term for a group of disorders caused by injury to the brain, most commonly during pregnancy.

It is a permanent, lifelong condition with no known cure and can range from weakness in one hand, to an almost complete lack of voluntary movement.

People with significant physical disabilities may require care 24 hours a day.

Funds raised by the campaign go towards vital equipment, research, therapy and services for people living with cerebral palsy.

Aside from raising money for a good cause, walking 10,000 steps a day is recommended by health professionals to promote a healthy lifestyle not just physically but also mentally.

Particularly now with Greater Sydney riding out its lockdown, getting outdoors and walking either on your own or with a friend can be a great and much needed mood-booster during this time.

Running for a cause Run Against Violence raises awareness about important national issue EMILY FESZCZUK

H

undreds of locals will be hitting the pavement at the end of the month to participate in the fourth annual Run Against Violence (RAV) Virtual Team Challenge.

From Monday, August 30, teams of up to 20 have 19 days to walk or run a combined 1,300 kilometres in their local area to raise awareness about family violence.

The virtual run equates to 1.7 million steps, which is also the estimated number of Australians who have experienced physical abuse before the age of 15, according to the 2016 ABS Personal Safety Survey.

Christy Capilli from Penrith Running Tribe said it will be her fourth year participating in the challenge that was founded

by Kirrily Dear and Brad Smithers.

“In 2017 Kirrily did a solo run from Broken Hill to Sydney so your team can log the kilometres they do and enter them online to follow the same route to see where you are up to virtually,” Ms Capilli said.

“Domestic violence whether it is physical

or emotional is inclusive of both men and women of all ages so starting a conversation with the community about it is vital.”

In 2020, the challenge raised $120,000 and had 3,000 participants. This year the goal has been raised to 5,000 people and $180,000 which will go towards the ‘Love Bites’ program run by the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect in high schools.

Melanie Brothers, who is a part of the team ‘Brothers and Friends’, is also participating for the fourth year with family and friends from Penrith and Dubbo.

“Given the current climate of lockdown and people feeling trapped... I am a firm believer of empowerment through education and that starts with awareness,” Ms Brothers said.

“I have three daughters and a son so I want them to have an awareness where they wouldn’t find themselves in a situation involving violence, or if they do, they would be able to navigate through that.”

Ms Capilli said community spirit is all that is needed to take part in the RAV Challenge.

“You don’t have to be a runner, you can walk and do what you can… it is all about

TURNING BACK TIME

Today we look back at the iconic restaurant, The Keg. Through the late 1980s and early 1990s, The Keg was one of the most popular restaurants in town – after taking over from Denny’s.

The restaurant was located on the corner of Henry and Evan Streets in Penrith, a site

that is currently abandoned with the old building still standing, now derelict.

One-time Marketing Director of The Keg, David Angus, said in 1993: “Many people are frightened of top-notch restaurants.

They want to go to places that are nonthreatening, where they know they won’t be ripped off and where there’s friendly service

where they won’t have to wait 20 minutes to get noticed.”

While The Keg had its place in Penrith’s restaurant scene, it couldn’t keep up with the changing habits of diners, and by the mid-1990s, the chain had disappeared.

he Finals come early this Friday night when Penrith and Souths do battle in what is shaping up as one of the most anticipated games of the season.

The Panthers and Rabbitohs will almost certainly do battle in the opening weekend of the Finals, so to get a match-up like this so close to the playoffs is mouth-watering indeed.

Both sides have come a long way since Penrith belted Benny’s Bunnies 56-12 in Dubbo back in Round 11.

The Panthers would go on to beat the Bulldogs the following weekend before a difficult period that saw them lose to the Tigers and Sharks as the drama of the Origin period took hold.

It’s safe to say Ivan Cleary’s side has only just recovered from the mid-season representative roller coaster but last week’s win over St George-Illawarra provided plenty

As for Souths, they bounced back from that heavy defeat to Penrith to beat the Eels the following weekend and kick-off what has become a 10 match winning streak.

Both sides can argue the numbers are in their favour.

Souths has scored 30 points in eight straight matches, with their left side attack in particular simply electrifying over the past two months.

Penrith has conceded less than 20 points an incredible 19 times this season – the last time they achieved such a feat was way back in the 1991 Premiership year.

Dig a little deeper and you’ll find the two games where more than 20 points were conceded were against the Tigers and Storm – matches where Penrith’s line-up was significantly depleted.

So the question is – can Penrith’s rocksolid defence hold out the rampaging Rabbitohs? Or conversely, can Souths crack the brick wall that Ivan Cleary has built this season?

Every Panthers supporter would have breathed a sigh of relief last weekend when Nathan Cleary ran out onto Suncorp Stadium. Almost instantly Penrith looked a better team; much more organised in both attack and defence and up a level or two in energy. Cleary has awoken the side from its siesta, and it’ll only be better in coming weeks as more and more troops return.

Cleary’s battle with Adam Reynolds will be something special this weekend – both have been in terrific form this season and both will have a significant say in how this match plays out.

But it could well be the battle of the other halves – Jarome Luai and Cody Walker – that

helps decide this one. Walker has been in red hot form and may just be a quiet Dally M hope, while Luai was brilliant in the first half of the season but has been a little quiet since the Origin period. A clash like this may well revive his form, however.

And then there’s he battle of the fullbacks. Sure, Latrell Mitchell is a force to be reckoned with and probably has Dylan Edwards’ measure, but the latter showed against the Dragons last weekend that he has plenty of heart and fight and he has an opportunity here to prove he can match it with the game’s elite.

For me two things swing me Penrith’s way – the return of Api Koroisau at hooker, and the likely inclusion of Tevita Pangai Junior as an X-factor.

This will be one hell of a battle. Strap yourself in.

KIKAU GOES TO MARKET ! The report that emerged last week about St George-Illawarra being interested in Penrith enforcer Viliame Kikau is the first of many we’re likely to hear in the coming months. As I reported a few weeks ago, Kikau is very unlikely to re-sign with Penrith before November 1, which means he’ll be on the open market for the 2023 season and able to hold discussions with rival clubs and codes. And once that happens, it obviously throws 2022 into some doubt. Kikau will be turning 27 early next year, so this is a big contract for him. The reality is if he chooses to chase cash, he probably won’t be at Penrith – the club won’t pay overs, but others will certainly open the cheque book. ! The Panthers are resigned to the fact that the Merv Cartwright Medal will be cancelled for a second consecutive year.

Even if restrictions do start to ease in September and October, the chances of a major function like that being within the rules is extremely unlikely. I’d expect the club will again announce its major awards in a virtual ceremony. ! One thing that hopefully won’t be virtual is the Dally M Awards. The NRL is working to potentially present the awards as early as September 6, possibly as an outdoor event at Suncorp Stadium. The ceremony has been held during Grand Final Week in recent times but most clubs would have left Queensland by the time early October rolls around, so the league is considering holding the event straight after the regular season. ! The Panthers expect Tyrone May to be fit and ready to return from a leg injury against the Tigers next weekend. May is likely to be used off the bench during the Finals. ! Spencer Leniu has been added to the club’s injury list after picking up a minor ankle injury against the Roosters a fortnight ago. The 20-year-old has been working strongly in rehab and could be available for next week’s clash with the Tigers, but a return against Parramatta is more likely.

! Most of us are cheering for the boys from home at the moment, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be decked out in the latest gear. The club last week released its 2021 Panthers Finals Series T-Shirt for pre-order, with deliveries expected to commence from early next week. The shirt is a beauty and is a must-have for all collectors.

! The Panthers will finish the season in Brisbane, Redcliffe and the Gold Coast after the NRL confirmed the schedule for the remaining three rounds of the competition.

Friday night’s clash against Souths is at Suncorp Stadium, while the match against the Tigers next Sunday afternoon will be at Moreton Daily Stadium in Redcliffe.

Cbus Super Stadium on the Gold Coast will host the end-of-season blockbuster derby against the Eels. ! Our thoughts are very much with Tevita Pangai Junior, who returned to training with Penrith this week and was named in the squad for the clash against the Rabbitohs on Friday night. Tevita and his partner Anna farewelled their little girl, who was stillborn, at a private service over the weekend. The pair shared some heartwrenching photos on social media. It really puts things into perspective. ! Penrith continues to draw big audiences on Fox League, with an average of 258,727 viewers tuning in to last Friday night’s clash against the Dragons. That’s six per cent up on the Round 22 average.

Both Fox and Channel Nine are expecting potential season-best figures for Friday night’s Panthers v Rabbitohs blockbuster.

! An episode of ‘The Fan’ on Fox League last Saturday night revealed what we all pretty much knew – the old, famous Panther scoreboard was never carefully placed in storage to preserve its huge historical value despite what was said at the time.

ince their 44-point thrashing at the hands of Penrith back in May, South Sydney have enjoyed the spoils of one of the softest 10-game stretches in the NRL this year.

While they’ve had to play the much maligned Parramatta Eels twice since Round 12, the majority of their beltings over the past two-and-half months have come against second, even third, rate opposition like the Dragons, Warriors, Cowboys and Broncos.

Tonight’s highly anticipated clash against the Panthers at Suncorp Stadium will arguably be their toughest match of the season and, for both clubs, will be an important hit out before the pair likely run into each other again in the Finals in three weeks’ time.

Speaking with the media on the Sunshine Coast on Monday, outgoing Panthers forward Kurt Capewell said South Sydney have been a dangerous side of late, especially in attack.

“They are definitely a great attacking team and they’re definitely hard to stop getting a heap of points and, once they get a couple of tries on the board, they can really go on with the job,” he said.

Over the past 10 games, Wayne Bennett’s men have averaged 41 points per match while Penrith have leaked an average of 16.8 points per match since the two teams last met in Round 11.

The stats show that the Rabbitohs won’t

have an easy time getting to the try line against the Panthers tonight like they have during their recent winning run.

Capewell said his side’s defence will need to be at its usual high standard this evening to stop one of the league’s most potent

attacks of late and to avoid a disastrous loss to a fellow top four side.

“They’ve always had it in them, they’ve always been able to score a heap of points and, when they get on a roll, they are a hard team to stop,” he said.

“The Souths halves, in particular, are firing at the moment… as a whole team defensively we’re going to have a massive job, so we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Penrith will go into tonight’s clash on a bit of a roll and possessing a side as close to full strength as possible. With co-captain Nathan Cleary returning with flying colours last week, it appears the Panthers are timing their run to the post-season beautifully – however there’s still some more fine tuning to do according to the Queensland Origin champion.

“Just our handling the other night [against the Dragons] wasn’t up to our standards.

I wasn’t playing but a few times the speed of the game got away from us too, so we just need to put together a full 80 minutes this week rather than be good in parts,” Capewell said.

“As a group, we’ve still been gradually working on our game and trying to get better week in, week out. We’ll worry about us this week and try and put together a performance that we’re proud of.”

KIKAU BLOCKS NOISE NATHAN TAYLOR

iliame Kikau has channelled former US President Donald Trump, labelling recent speculation about his playing future as “fake news”.

Last week media reports suggested the reigning Dally M Second-Rower of the Year was in huge demand, with St GeorgeIllawarra understood to be very keen to land the popular Fijian from 2023 onwards.

Kikau is signed with the Panthers until the end of next season, but the 26-year-old is expected to receive plenty of interest from rival clubs and rugby union when he comes on the open market from November 1.

Speaking for the first time about his contract status on Wednesday, Kikau said reports the Dragons are keen on his services are off the mark, especially considering they can’t legally tender a contract offer until November.

“I’m not sure where all the news is popping up from,” he admitted.

“All that stuff that happens behind the scenes, I just leave in my manager’s hands. I think that’s his job and that’s obviously why players pay their managers.

“I just want to make sure I perform well and I’ll let my performances do the talking

and that’s about it. I think all this news is fake news.”

After spending the early part of his rugby league career in the Cowboys system, Kikau joined the Panthers in 2016 and made his NRL debut a year later against the Tigers in Campbelltown.

Nearly 100 first grade games later, the hulking back-rower has become a household name and one of the most destructive forwards in the competition.

Speaking with Extra Time, Kikau said he’d love to remain at the Panthers long-term but understands that may not be possible due to salary cap restraints.

“I think, for me, that’s my first option,” he said.

“I love this club. This club gave me the opportunity to play on the big stage in the NRL. I made my debut here and I’d love to stay here for the rest of my career.

“But rugby league is a business; you just never know what will happen. But, for me, I’d love to stay at Penrith.”

While Kikau hopes to remain loyal to Penrith well into the future, it will be hard for him not to entertain other offers that come his way especially considering they will be far greater than what the Panthers are able to offer.

The Nausori product said presently he can’t envision himself speaking to other

interested parties apart from the Panthers.

“Na… that’s probably my answer for now,” he said.

“I’m just focusing on the Panthers and everything I do is for the Panthers and trying to win a premiership.

Friday night lights: Can Benny’s Bunnies defy history?

ou can’t win the competition if you’ve conceded 50 points in a game during the season.

That’s what history tells us.

History, however, has been tipped on its head during this 2021 NRL campaign, with teams scoring points at record rates and winning margins blowing out to unseen levels.

Maybe we should disregard most things we thought we knew about the game and look at this current season with a set of completely fresh eyes.

Let’s start with that old statistic regarding teams that lose by 50 points or more.

If any team can consign that one to the dustbin it’s the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

The Bunnies have won 18 out of 21 games played, they’ve only been beaten by two teams all season, and they’re currently on a 10 game winning streak that began the week after they lost to the Panthers at Apex Oval in Dubbo.

What a day that was – a country footy ground bursting with fans under a cloudless sky, and two hotshot teams going head-tohead in late May. Mayday indeed!

The Rabbitohs copped a spanking to remember that Sunday afternoon, giving up 56 points as the local hero, Matt Burton, returned to Dubbo to score a hattrick for the Panthers in slashing style.

was the second time they’d conceded 50 points in a game in the space of three weeks, after Melbourne racked up a half-century against them in Round 9.

If the stat says you can’t with the comp after the opposition puts 50 on you, what happens when you do it twice in three games?

Rabbitohs coach, Wayne Bennett, was rocked by the thudding defeat to the point that he felt he needed to apologise to the supporters. ”I’m sorry for all the fans here today. The way we played, they deserve better than that,” he said during his post-match press conference.

In past seasons you’d say there’s no chance they can win the Grand Final after two hidings like that, but maybe, just maybe this season is like no other we’ve watched.

We know that having one key player missing from a line-up can bring a team undone pretty quickly in 2021, and the common denominator in both of those heavy defeats for South Sydney was the absence of tireless forward Cameron Murray.

An ankle injury suffered in Round 8 against the Raiders meant Murray missed both of those monstrous losses, but returned in Round 12 as the Rabbitohs steadied the ship with a confidence-restoring win over the Eels.

They haven’t been beaten since.

Amongst all the stars at Wayne Bennett’s disposal – Mitchell, Walker, Reynolds, Cook – is it Murray who is the glue that keeps the team from splintering under the relentless force the Panthers and Storm can apply?

Murray has an insatiable appetite for defence, is one of the best in the league at supplying a quick play the ball, and makes every team he plays for a whole lot better than they otherwise would be.

Can he prove that the 50-point massacres of May were an anomaly and not a sign that the Bunnies weren’t up to it, or do the Panthers ram home the difference in class that they established in Dubbo?

Friday night, under lights, we get to find out the answer.

Unlikely heroes that could deliver premiership success this October

very year prior to Round 1 we see clubs and personalities pick their expected team line-ups for the upcoming season.

Obviously, these are great talking points, but rarely will a team go through a season with their full-strength squad intact.

From these expected XIII’s follow predictions of how the season plays out, but I believe it’s what we don’t know that usually decides premiership success.

Putting it into practice, a Round 1 team almost never matches identically to a team that wins the competition.

As perhaps the greatest player of all-time, SEN host Cameron Smith has said before, you know what you will get from your top flight players, so it’s often what you can get out of those further down the squad depth chart that counts.

All teams are playing to a salary cap, however it’s the market value of these caps where the best teams make their bread and butter.

The players getting paid modest wages yet playing like stars often makes the difference to a campaign.

As a result, the ‘Plan B’ players often become your ‘Plan A’.

We’ve seen that this year with these reserve players blossoming in Matt

Burton, Haumole Olakau’atu, Nicho Hynes, Keoan Koloamatangi, Sam Walker and Egan Butcher.

These breakout players immediately come to mind when we think about why their teams are in promising positions with Finals on the horizon, and it’s more than likely one will have a premiership ring in the very near future.

But it’s not just 2021, these ‘Plan B’ players pop up to star every year.

Sam Verrills scored the first try in the 2018 Grand Final after an injury to Jake Friend in the lead up.

Souths’ 2014 Round 1 side featured Issac Luke, Nathan Merritt and Beau Champion, but due to injury and suspension this Plan A would have to change to a Plan B which would feature Luke Keary, Alex Johnston and Kirisome Auva’a – all premiership heroes.

Players who thought their seasons were destined for Q Cup or NSW Cup could just be the difference makers come Finals, and that’s one thing that makes our game so great.

It wouldn’t shock me in the slightest if a Burton or Hynes is crucial in a premiership push in just a few weeks’ time.

Buckle up, it’s going to be an exciting ride to go along with the journey for these unlikely heroes.

here’s no doubt in my mind that Ivan Cleary will coach the Penrith Panthers to an NRL Premiership in 2021.

In fact there’s no reason why the Panthers can’t win multiple premierships over the next five to 10 years with Cleary in charge.

Much has been made of the fact that Cleary has not won a Premiership despite coaching 375 games. What must be remembered however is that he has taken two young, talented rosters to a Grand Final.

The New Zealand Warriors in 2011 and the Panthers only last season (2020).

Don’t worry, those experiences will hold him in good stead for this year’s tilt at rugby league’s highest honour.

At the moment Ivan Cleary holds a 71 per cent win ratio in his second stint as Panthers coach. Along with the players, Cleary has created a culture which is highly team, not individual focused. They play like brothers not distant cousins.

Under Cleary this season, Penrith have beaten every team at least once, except for the Tigers when the Panthers were down eight of their best players.

If I had one criticism of Cleary’s coaching this season it would be that he struggled during the State of Origin series to sometimes get the balance of the team right. Who to rest, how many players to rest and when.

However what should give Panthers supporters the most confidence is that

It took a bit of time and meant that many fan favourites had to be moved on, including Josh Mansour but what it also shows is that those changes had to be made or the success which Penrith is currently enjoying probably wouldn’t be happening.

This Cleary coached side play a brand of football which is a seamless blend of ‘eyes up’ instinctive footy and structured play.

Cleary’s record against every coach in the current competition is outstanding. Like most coaches, Craig Bellamy’s superhuman Storm side is Ivan Cleary’s biggest challenge. However Cleary has beaten him once already this season and there’s no reason why, if necessary, he can’t do it again.

! Newcastle’s Finals aspirations have taken a huge blow with Origin forward Daniel Saifiti out for the rest of the regular season with a knee injury. Saifiti suffered the MCL injury in last week’s narrow win over Cronulla. There’s no structural damage but he won’t play again before the Finals. ! Wests Tigers will celebrate its annual Heritage Round on Saturday when the club plays host to the Cronulla Sharks at Rockhampton. Having missed the chance to recognise its traditional Heritage Round game in Sydney this year due to the COVID pandemic, Wests will now celebrate the game in Round 23 in what is a must-win contest for Michael Maguire’s side.

Experienced front rower Corey Jensen will join the Brisbane Broncos on a two-year contract next season.

Jensen, 27, has made 58 NRL appearances for the Cowboys since making his debut in 2017.

Eels forward Ryan Matterson will spend three weeks on the sideline, after taking the early guilty plea at the NRL judiciary for a Careless High Tackle. The 26-year-old was served a grade three Careless High Tackle charge for a hit on Manly’s Brad Parker.

The Roosters will again be without Victor Radley for an extended period after he took an early guilty plea to a Dangerous Contact charge.

CAN HE GO ALL THE WAY? EMILY FESZCZUK yron Garn might be an apprentice plumber from Penrith, but he also has a stellar set of pipes on him.

The 19-year-old blew everyone away during his blind audition on the 10th season of the television singing competition ‘The Voice’.

The hit TV show is back on a new channel, with talented coaches Keith Urban, Jessica Mauboy, Rita Ora and Guy Sebastian, and unassuming artists like Byron waiting to be discovered.

While he had never performed to a large crowd, Byron told the Weekender he wasn’t going to let nerves get to him.

“I have been singing for a quite a while and love it but I have never done anything big like that before, I’ve only ever sung in front of friends and family,” Byron said.

“I was stoked when the opportunity to try out came around and I was going to just go for it to have the experience.”

With his version of Lewis Capaldi’s ballad ‘Before You Go’ turning the chairs of Rita, Guy and Jessica, the teenager said he was shocked.

“I tend to connect with the lyrics of

songs like that a little easier and am able to put out the emotions of a sad song much more compared to a happy song,” he said.

“I had a tiny bit of hope obviously but I was honestly shocked when three judges turned around but it was a really good feeling.”

Faced with a tough decision, Byron decided to go with Guy to be his coach and mentor for the next round.

“All of the other judges are amazing so it was a hard decision but I have always listened to Guy from quite a young age,” he said.

“I love his music and I thought he had the best route and teaching skills to push me in the direction I want to go.”

Proud to be representing the ‘Riff ’, the laid back larrikin said he is focused on excelling in the competition so he can pursue singing as a legitimate career.

“It is an amazing experience and as you progress through each round it can be hard as you love everyone, but at the end of the day you are there to try to win,” he said.

“My main goal is getting as much knowledge and experience so I can accelerate and make it a career.”

ith the entire family currently in lockdown due to the COVID pandemic, there is no better time to introduce a few interactive puzzles to your pet to beat the boredom of the hours in isolation.

Like humans, pets love games and puzzles. Dogs and cats can benefit from interactive puzzles; they are a great way to challenge and strengthen your pet’s mental and physical capabilities. We especially recommend interactive puzzle toys to fight boredom, reduce destructive behaviours and help keep your pet busy should you have to leave them for any period of time.

The beauty of puzzles and interactive games is that they can be introduced to any dog no matter their age, physical activity level or health situation!

For puppies, it is important to start with games that are simple, short, and that require lots of interaction with the owner as well as positive feedback and praise.

For senior pets, you can reduce the strain of games by letting them work with their nose as opposed to having to move around their body as much.

Benefits of interactive toys include: Relieves Boredom – Pet puzzle toys can

successfully cure boredom that can lead to behaviour issues. When pets become bored or lonely, they invent their own entertainment. This translates to scratching, chewing and tearing up inappropriate things, like sofas, cushions, shoes, furniture, and garbage bins. You may think your pet is getting even with you for leaving him alone or being too busy to play with them, but that’s not the reason. Puzzles, toys and environmental enrichment can be the boredom-buster your pet needs.

Slow Down Feeding – You can actually feed your dog their entire meal using certain food puzzles. They are an excellent choice for slowing down pets who eat too quickly and preventing unpleasant side effects like vomiting and indigestion.

Exercise – Food puzzles can provide exercise for your dog’s mind and body. For the most part, dogs need jobs. Dogs need activities that challenge them mentally and exercise to challenge them physically.

Without mental and physical stimulation, pets will often become destructive, and all too often, carry excess weight.

There are many forms of interactive toys and puzzles available. Different sized pets, personalities and breeds may dictate the most successful puzzle or game choice.

Kong Toys – These are great for teething puppies, and it will keep a food-motivated dog occupied for hours. Kongs are durable

and multi-purpose; they bounce and roll and can be used for fetch. The shape makes them bounce unpredictably, which keeps pets interested. A recycled soft drink bottle can also be utilised in a similar manner.

Hide & Seek squeak toys – If your dog loves squeaky plush toys, hide them in a box or cardboard tube and watch your dog go crazy trying to pull them out. It is a great game that does not use food as a reward, so it’s great for those chubby pups who need activity but not calories. If your

dog gets carried away, just throw out the box and start again.

Twister Puzzle Toy – This is a challenging treat dispenser game. Your dog can push the interlocking segments around to find the treat, but to make it harder, you can lock some of the panels in place. Great for intelligent working breed dogs.

Ball Launcher Toy – A favourite for dogs with energy to burn is the automatic ball launcher. This battery-operated toy will automatically launch the ball and relaunch once your pet brings it back and drops it into the machine.

Snuffle Puzzle Mat – A snuffle mat is the perfect puzzle toy to utilise your pet’s sniffing instincts. Made of soft material you simply hide treats under flaps and let your pet forage for the treats. Look for a mat that is machine washable for an easy clean up.

Just 15-30 minutes a day with a puzzle toys and your pet can be top of the class by the end of COVID lockdown.

he superannuation system is designed to build wealth in order to provide us with income in our retirement years. Once we retire and need income, the most efficient way to do this is by converting our superannuation to pension phase and commence an income stream.

Once in pension phase, all earnings are tax-free as is the income you receive. There are two types of income streams; accountbased pensions and annuities. Each has competing strengths and weaknesses and they work really well together by having a combination of both.

An account-based pension, also known as an allocated pension, is by far the most common income stream. Account-based pensions are offered by most superannuation providers and there is a wide array and choice of funds.

The main strength of the account-based pension is flexibility. You are able to choose how you invest your funds. You can also select the level of income you require and are able to make withdrawals as you please. The value of the accountbased pension goes up and down in line with investment returns and withdrawals.

Once you run out of money, the pension

stops. In the event of your death, the remaining value of your account-based pension is passed on to your estate.

The full value of the account-based pension is assessed for Centrelink asset test purposes. It is also subject to deeming for the income test, in the same way as other investment assets. Older accountbased pensions may be entitled to more favourable treatment for the income test.

With account-based pensions, you bear investment risk and longevity risk.

Annuities pay you a set income for a set period of time. You are able to nominate a time frame and a portion of your investment you would like back at the end of the period. The annuity company will pay you a pre-determined pension for the designated time frame.

You are also able to select a lifetime pension, in which you receive an income for the rest of your life.

The newer lifetime

annuities offer guaranteed payment terms, periods you can access your funds and other options that weren’t available in earlier life time annuities. This makes them a little more flexible than they once were.

Annuities are very secure in that they offer guaranteed payments with the annuity company bearing the investment risk. Lifelong annuities and annuities with benefit periods of longer than five yea rs

with no return of capital, have favourable Centrelink treatment. In the case of lifelong annuities, they also bear the longevity risk.

The weakness of annuities is that they typically have lower investment returns and are very inflexible and you can’t take a lump sum.

fter nearly half a century of operation, Londonderry Pony Club has finally rode its way to the top, named NSW Pony Club of the Year for 2021.

The club, located on Londonderry Road, was bestowed the prestigious honour from The Pony Club Association of NSW (PCANSW) earlier this month much to the delight of its 100 passionate members.

Speaking with the Weekender, Londonderry Pony Club Vice President Sharne Haskins said being recognised among 270 Pony Clubs across the state is very special.

“We’re absolutely ecstatic, it’s definitely not an easy feat,” she said.

“There are a lot of amazing clubs throughout NSW and to be recognised for the work our members and volunteers do, is really heart warming and humbling.

“Our club has been around since 1974 and we’re nearing our 50th anniversary.

We’ve never been given Club of the Year status before, so it’s an amazing achievement particularly with all the crazy circumstances of the last 12 to 18 months.”

Londonderry Pony Club was chosen for the award for showing innovation in administration, skills development as well as for successfully engaging both its club members and local community.

“Londonderry Pony Club has hosted numerous events over the last 18 months from regional schools and jamborees to having students ride in the soon-tobe-released NCAS Video Instructional Series,” PCANSW said in a statement.

“Londonderry ensures they have rider inclusion as a top priority for all events and activities. They have created a club that is regarded as inviting, supportive, encouraging and understanding of each their individual members’ needs and situations.”

Before the current lockdown, Londonderry Pony Club was very active in the local community hosting various charity events and fundraisers as a way to teach

younger members, some as young as two, about being kind to one another through sport.

“As a club, not everything is about horses.

We want to teach our young members that there’s a community out there that needs help and support, and we often hold charity days and fundraisers,” Haskins said.

The club comprises of several associate riders, aged between 17-25, who not only help instruct the younger members of the club but also compete at a high level.

“We’ve had five riders represent Australia and many more who have represented NSW and won at the Pony Club Nationals, so we’re not too bad on the competition front as well,” Haskins said.

Giants have one last shot to make Super Netball decider

The Giants and Swifts played out an epic Finals battle last Saturday.

n all-Sydney Grand Final is still a big possibility, but Giants Netball will need to dust themselves off and get past the red-hot West Coast Fever first.

Both sides will go head to head this Saturday afternoon for the right to play the NSW Swifts in next weekend’s Super Netball decider.

The Giants, who finished the regular season on top, already had one chance to qualify for the Grand Final last Saturday; however they were unable to get past their crosstown rivals.

The Swifts survived a Super Shot hail storm to advance to their second Grand Final in three years with a heart-stopping 62-61 win over the Giants.

Giant Sophie Dwyer, in her first Finals appearance, and Jo Harten shot their side to within sight of victory before the Swifts’ experienced heads, including Penrith’s own Paige Hadley, closed the game out at Brisbane’s Nissan Arena.

The Swifts had control of the game until an air raid of four Super Shots from Dwyer (23 points) and Harten (38 points) gave the Minor Premiers a sniff at threequarter time.

The pair could not have done more to haul their side across the line, but it just wasn’t enough as NSW’s experience ultimately prevailed.

“We had four players who’ve not played Finals before, so today was a great experience for them,” Giants coach Julie Fitzgerald said.

The Giants and Fever play at 3pm tomorrow. The game is live on Nine.

ess than four months after celebrating their first Shute Shield win in seven years, the Penrith Emus have been sensationally dumped… again.

Via a short press statement released last Friday afternoon, the Sydney Rugby Union (SRU) tossed the Emus out of Sydney’s top rugby competition for incredibly the second time in three years.

It is an extraordinary slap in the face to the sport in greater western Sydney driven by rich clubs in the east.

Despite years of hard work rebuilding the club after their previous axing in 2018, SRU reloaded their gold plated gun and fired one last fatal shot – breaking the heart of every current, former and future Penrith Emu. In a statement, the SRU said after an “exhaustive process”, which consulted all stakeholders, the Penrith Emus would not be awarded a participation agreement for the 2022 season and beyond as they would be unlikely to adhere to key outcomes required.

“The SRU would like to take this opportunity to thank the Penrith Emus, their board, management, coaches, volunteers and players for their efforts in being part of Sydney

The Penrith Emus celebrate a groundbreaking victory earlier this year.

Premier Rugby since they joined in 1995,” the SRU said.

“We appreciate the strength of the local Penrith junior program in the region and will work with NSWRU to find ways to provide pathways for local juniors to stay engaged with rugby within the wider GWS district and the Western Sydney Two Blues.”

Penrith Emus President Gary McColl was understandably disappointed by the decision.

“I have no idea why they invited us in, in

order to throw us out,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“All it has done is cause angst, pain and suffering.”

In related news, the SRU confirmed that the remainder of the 2021 Shute Shield season will be abandoned, with no winner declared for the first time in nearly 100 years. The Emus finished their final ever Shute Shield season in second last place, recording one win more than Western Sydney.
