T

he Penrith Local Government Area (LGA) has been split in two, with 12 suburbs now subject to tighter lockdown restrictions as COVID-19 creeps its way into the area.

Residents in Kingswood, Caddens, Orchard Hills, Claremont Meadows, St Marys, North St Marys, Oxley Park, Colyton, St Clair, Erskine Park, Kemps Creek and Mount Vernon were placed under the new rules on Sunday.

Residents can only travel within 5km of their home for essential shopping and exercise, while masks must be worn outdoors.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian and health officials resisted the temptation to place the entire LGA into a harsher lockdown, with case numbers primarily rising in the eastern parts of the region.

Dozens of new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District over the past week.

State Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said it’s a time to come together to fight the outbreak.

“Now more than ever we need to pull together and do the right thing. Stay home, get tested and get vaccinated,” he told the Weekender.

“I know Penrith is up for this challenge. Many people will be tested more than ever before and it’s okay to ask for support. The pathway back to what we know and love is by adhering to the stay at home orders and getting vaccinated.”

Ms Berejiklian (pictured left) is pushing vaccinations throughout August, saying the number of “jabs in arms” come the end of the month will determine what restrictions can be lifted.

Concern over hospital cluster Ms Berejiklian said vaccination was the main way out of the crisis, versus any additional restrictions such as a ‘ring of steel’ or curfew.

“If the health advice suggested to us there was further we needed to do, of course we would do that,” she said.

“Part of the challenge we have in NSW is lack of compliance. Part of the challenge is because Delta is different to anything we have ever seen before.

“Unfortunately there are still pockets of people who do not believe this is a serious illness and that they don’t need to follow the health orders.”

Earlier this week, a man in his 70s with COVID-19 died at Nepean Hospital.

“He tested positive on July 7 and was not vaccinated,” said NSW Chief Health Officer, Kerry Chant.

There is currently more than 240 active COVID-19 cases across the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD), with the majority being in the 2760 and 2759 postcodes.

Despite a significant number of venue exposure alerts in Penrith and South Penrith, the majority of the cases in the

Local Government Area live in St Marys, Colyton, Oxley Park, St Clair and Erskine Park.

While 12 suburbs have been specifically singled out for harsher restrictions, the general COVID-19 lockdown restrictions still apply to the rest of the Penrith LGA. Meantime, there are major concerns after a fresh cluster emerged in the Mental Health Unit of Nepean Hospital.

NBMLHD has confirmed to the Weekender that two clients admitted to the unit have tested positive, while additional cases had been linked to the unfolding situation.

“All identified close contacts are being tested,” a spokesperson said.

“NBMLHD takes every measure to protect staff, patients and visitors from COVID-19.

“Extensive cleaning has been undertaken at the centre including the cleaning of all equipment and high-touch areas.”

Staff are said to be concerned about a lack of communication. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian remains under intense pressure as the outbreak worsens.

Exam obsession is over the top HSC obsession not proportionate The Higher School Certificate (HSC) is one of the most demanding and difficult times in a young person’s life.

For the 80,000-odd students undertaking the exams this year, it’s been made even more stressful by the COVID-19 outbreak impacting New South Wales.

But I’m a little perplexed at why the HSC has had such an extraordinary focus from the State Government in the midst of this generation’s greatest health and economic crisis.

So much so that they even redirected vaccines from regional New South Wales in an attempt to get students jabbed and ready for the big tests.

They’ve moved heaven and earth to ensure these exams happen, yet I dare say – and I know some will shout me down here – there are far more important things than the HSC at the moment.

And despite their best efforts, the Government’s ever-changing plans has only created more uncertainty for students anyway.

Quite simply the HSC trial exams, assessments and then the exams themselves should have been pushed back and postponed.

There’s a dozen reasons people will say this can’t happen, but have we not learned that being flexible and adaptable is the new normal?

I feel for the 80,000-odd students, I really do.

But I feel for the millions of people who can’t go to work, too.

I feel for the business owners still waiting for support payments the State Government has royally stuffed up in delivering (more on that shortly).

I feel sorry for people who desperately want to be vaccinated yet have been hamstrung by a farcical roll-out that should cost Scott Morrison his job at the next election.

I feel sorry for those who haven’t seen their grandchildren in months, or live alone and feel terribly isolated by the lockdown.

We have all been impacted by the pandemic in one way or another. We’ve all had to deal with cancellations, postponements and significant disappointment.

The government’s obsession with getting the HSC underway almost feels like they needed some sort of win, so it became a laser-like focus.

The media fell for it, at least when they weren’t focusing on why Bunnings is open (seriously, can we lay off this?).

The exams should have been postponed so the government didn’t have to redirect vaccines, and could have focused on getting businesses back in operation and people back to work.

Show them the money The fact that so many businesses still haven’t seen a cent of State Government support since the lockdown began seven weeks ago is nothing short of a disgrace.

You wouldn’t get away with letting your car registration go a day over the due date, but the government just lets the days roll on as businesses get deeper and deeper into trouble.

It has been one of the government’s biggest failings of this lockdown.

And while the Premier apologised to businesses this week, there seems to be a lack of acknowledgement that accessing the Business Grant and JobSaver program has been an utter disaster.

I’m told there’s been software and distribution issues, which is understandable given the enormous task at hand.

But excuses don’t make it right.

The fact many businesses were forced to close almost two months ago and haven’t been helped in the slightest is a black mark on Gladys Berejiklian and her government. They need to fix it.

Brian told us so When I developed my obsession with news and the media as a kid, I used to watch the 6pm news, write down all the stories and then go present it to the mirror myself.

That man I plagiarised was the great Brian Henderson, who passed away last week at the age of 89.

He was a legend of the industry during a time when watching full press conferences and 24 hour news channels didn’t exist. The 6pm news was the be all and end all.

Tests, isolation after series of ‘close contact’ venue alerts

Customers on high alert after chemist worker tests positive

host of new ‘close contact’ venues in the Penrith Local Government Area has forced thousands of people into isolation for 14 days.

The list includes the Wok Crazy Noodle Bar at Erskine Park, with anyone who was there on Monday, August 2 between 6.10pm and 6.45pm called on to get tested and isolate.

It’s the same story for the Terry White Chemmart on High Street on Tuesday, August 3 between 7.50am and 6pm and Wednesday, August 4 between 7.50am and 6pm. The JANS Family Health Practice is also caught up in the same timeframe.

There is also a series of St Marys loca-

tions declared ‘close contact’ venues.

These include the Commonwealth Bank at St Marys on Thursday, August 5 between 5.40pm and 5.50pm and the Easy Script Compounding Pharmacy on Monday, August 2 and Tuesday, August 3 (all day).

Anyone who was at the Monfarville Medical Centre from 9am to 5pm from Tuesday, August 3 to Friday, August 6 is also a ‘close contact’.

The Dr Lagaida General Practice is also listed for Friday, July 30 between 11.30am and 2.30pm and Saturday, July 31 between 10am and 12.30pm.

An alert for the St Marys Medical Centre is active for Wednesday, August 4.

he popular Southlands Shopping Centre in South Penrith suddenly became a COVID-19 focus last week, with numerous venue alerts issued for the centre.

The most serious was the Priceline Pharmacy, which was classified as a ‘close contact’ venue after a staff member tested positive to the virus.

It’s forced hundreds of customers into 14 days’ isolation.

Anyone who was at the pharmacy on Monday, August 2 between 9.45am and 7.15pm and Tuesday, August 3 between 8.45am an 5.15pm has been ordered to get a COVID-19 test and isolate for two weeks regardless of the result.

The centre itself became a ‘casual contact’ venue with anyone there on Monday, August 2 between 9am and 5pm and Tuesday, August 3 between 10am and 7pm told to get tested and isolate until a negative result was received.

Other retailers were also subjected to ‘casual contact’ venue status including Woolworths, South Penrith Tobacconist, Southlands Takeaway and Subway.

Exact times of concern are available on the NSW Health website. Customers have also been contacted via text message or phone call.

The centre itself along with Priceline and Woolworths were deep cleaned as a result of the scare.

“Messy and confusing” Councillors criticise chaotic lockdown rules that have split Penrith LGA

enrith Councillors have spoken out about the tighter COVID restrictions imposed on 12 Penrith suburbs.

On Sunday, NSW Health announced new rules for Caddens, Claremont Meadows, Colyton, Erskine Park, Kemps Creek, Kingswood, Mount Vernon, North St Marys, Orchard Hills, Oxley Park, St Clair and St Marys.

These included halving the previous 10km rule to 5km as well as mandating mask wearing when outside, even while exercising.

Councillor John Thain, who lives in one of the affected suburbs, was critical of the new rules, saying they were “messy and confusing”.

“It should either be the whole LGA or none of the LGA,” he said.

“It just doesn’t make sense”.

Cr Thain described this lockdown compared to the last as “chaotic”, adding it appeared to be a tale of two cities.

“We’re out here in the west trying to do the right thing, and then we look and we

see Bondi and Manly, we see Coogee packed, no social distancing, no masks and we have to wear a mask now whenever we leave the house, as soon as we leave the front door,” he said.

The Labor Councillor also criticised the NSW Government for failing to ensure COVID messaging cut through to nonEnglish speaking communities.

“Not one day have I seen anyone up there that speaks another language,” he said of the daily televised press conferences.

“Where they could do a couple of minutes talking to their community saying ‘please stay at home, please get vaccinated’, community leaders or religious leaders who they would take notice of.”

Meanwhile, East Ward Councillor and former registered nurse Robin Cook again urged the NSW Government to set up a vaccination hub in St Marys amid the surge in cases.

“Several weeks ago as the adjoining LGAs became hotspots, I was worried that the eastern area of Penrith would soon be affected,” she said.

“As the plea from the Government was for the community to get vaccinated, I looked into the number of venues available in

East Ward and was concerned there was no mass vaccination hub to cope with the increase in demand for vaccinations.

“I suggested our Council offer one of our facilities to set up a hub in St Marys with the community centre in mind, which the Member for Londonderry also requested.”

When asked about a hub in this area on the weekend, Premier Gladys Berejiklian pointed to Sydney Olympic Park.

Lockdown starts to take its toll EMILY FESZCZUK

esidents in 12 suburbs of the Penrith Local Government Area (LGA) are now feeling the impact of life in lockdown with stricter COVID19 restrictions.

Connie Duffey and her Erskine Park family have all been affected as a result of the pandemic and the most recent outbreak.

“I run a home beauty salon so was the first to be locked down, I am now doing remote learning with two teenagers and my oldest son is a high school teacher working from home,” Ms Duffey said.

“My husband works in construction but in management so he can work from home at the moment but this latest lockdown feels a lot harder than the last.”

Ms Duffey said they are all doing their best to deal with the new reality for residents who must stay within five kilometres of home.

“I usually provide care for my mother in Rooty Hill who is within five kilometres of our home but she is in Blacktown LGA which now may be an issue,” she said.

“While it has been hard to keep busy and

teenagers entertained at home, we are enjoying family time and Erskine Park has had a lot of hot spot locations lately so I can understand it from a safety point of view.”

Fellow Erskine Park resident and construction worker, Ben Woods said the current COVID-19 situation has been stressful.

“I am a carpenter so have not been working and now with the new restrictions I can only return to work three weeks after I get my first dose of a vaccine,” he said.

“My wife is about to give birth in a few weeks, there is a wait time for vaccines and I can’t even get a second job to support my soon-to-be family because I would be taxed so much that the pay would be less than the government support.”

Mr Woods said the restrictions lack some logic when it comes to limiting the spread of the virus.

“It makes zero sense, when you look at the boundaries people could live across the road from each other, both in construction, and one can’t go to work but the other one can,” he said.

“There seems to be no logic behind it so if they are going to lock it down, they should do a proper job with the LGA and get it done.”

Davies divides: Mulgoa MP’s tirade on new vaccine rules M

ulgoa MP Tanya Davies has put herself on a collision course with the Premier, after declaring workers in western Sydney were being “forced into vaccinations”.

Both the State and Federal Governments have ruled out mandatory vaccinations, but it will be a condition of workers from some sectors – such as construction – being able to return to the job during the ongoing outbreak.

Construction workers from Local Government Areas of concern will be able to return to the job if they’ve had two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, or one dose of the vaccine at least three weeks before attending work. If it’s been less than three weeks, they’ll need to return a negative COVID test.

“This weekend, the NSW Government announced compulsory vaccination for all construction workers and tradesmen in western Sydney who want a job,” Mrs Davies said.

“Workers in western Sydney are being forced into vaccinations for fear of not being able to provide for their families.

The policy of ‘no jab no job’ is an attack on my community and the people of NSW.

No citizen should be forced or coerced into having any medical treatment or procedure for fear of being discriminated against.

“A person may not be vaccinated for any number of medical, ethical or religious reasons. We as a Government should be protecting people’s individual rights and circumstances.”

Mrs Davies said employees should not be forced into COVID-19 vaccination and she would introduce a Private Member’s Bill to stop companies and the State Government from introducing mandatory jabs.

“This is an assault on an individual’s freedoms and civil liberties,” she said.

“The people of western Sydney are being discriminated against, penalised and treated like second class citizens based on their vaccination status.

“I am leading the campaign to legislate that there can be no blanket mandate for COVID-19 vaccinations and to ensure that nobody will be discriminated against based on their COVID-19 vaccination status. This legislation will maintain appropriate balance for certain industries such as health, aged care and transport.”

T

he vaccine is still unapproved, it’ll give you blood clots and the risk of COVID is worse.

They’re the common COVID-19 myths and fallacies that trained medical experts are trying desperately to debunk.

The dangerous, ill-informed agenda being pushed by some, particularly online, is risking the success of the vaccine roll-out and the likelihood of the lockdown lifting any time soon.

Our Medical Home Penrith Clinical Lead Doctor, Dr Janet Widmer told the Weekender the common myth that the vaccine is still in the trial period is untrue.

“Although the vaccine is new, it has been trialled on a large number of people and has been found to be safe,” Dr Widmer said.

“It has passed the testing for the standard required by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) of the Australian Government’s Department of Health so it is considered to be safe for use in the Australian community.”

The National Centre of Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS) has stated nearly one quarter of a million people have been involved in trials, providing a larger amount of data than for many other vaccines routinely used.

While COVID-19 vaccines can have side effects, the community can be assured they are safe to protect residents from the virus.

“All vaccines have side effects, with COVID-19 vaccines, such reported effects are pain at the injection site, fever, muscle and joint pain, sore throat, cough and headache but are considered to be of nuisance value only,” she said.

“All these effects pass within a day or so and are readily manageable at home with rest and Panadol… the more serious effects are very rare.”

While people may think there may be more deaths from vaccination compared to the virus, Dr Widmer said this is untrue.

“There are currently 91 deaths associated with COVID-19 in New South Wales, but only several deaths which may be associated with the vaccine,” Dr Widmer said.

“The risk of blood clotting is known to be associated with COVID-19 vaccination, but health professionals carefully screen patients before vaccination in order to

prevent any susceptible person being put at risk as best as possible.”

The NCIRS has reported that clinical trials of Pzifer and AstraZeneca have shown that two doses provide excellent protection from getting sick with COVID19.

“Vaccination is associated with much, much lower risk of significant disease and

death so it is necessary to achieve 70 to 80 per cent vaccination rates before our lives can return to being reasonably normal,” Dr Widmer said.

“COVID-19 vaccination is being offered at Our Medical Penrith in Jamisontown or patients can book a telehealth consultation with one of our doctors for any questions or concerns.”

Collective effort needed to lift lockdown

ver the past weeks we’ve all heard about the COVID-19 risk in western Sydney and the importance of staying home.

We also know that our community’s foundation is hardworking families. Many of our neighbours and friends do essential work.

The risk is higher in western Sydney suburbs because Sydney stops without our essential workers.

Police officers, nurses, paramedics,

delivery drivers, aged care workers and essential retail workers can’t stay home, because our state is relying on them.

They are doing their part and we must do ours to protect them and our wider community by reducing our movements and staying COVID-safe.

We know the dangers of this virus. We remember the tragic circumstances at Newmarch House only last year. Sydney now faces the more dangerous Delta variant, which is circulating in the suburbs of

Penrith, particularly around St Marys.

We live in an incredibly social community. Our relationships with our neighbours, family and friends make western Sydney such a great area to live.

But COVID-19 persists only by moving from person to person. To stop the spread of this virus we must keep our contact with others on hold as much as we can.

We also know vaccines help to protect us.

Locals want to get vaccinated, which is why I have been pushing strongly for expanded

vaccination availability, particularly for a vaccination hub around St Marys.

Local workers and businesses are doing it the hardest during this lockdown, under circumstances entirely outside their control. We need to see a return to normal life safely.

Now more than ever, we need a team effort to stay COVID-safe and get vaccinated. The lives and livelihoods of our neighbours, friends and family depend on our collective efforts.

Can my employer force me to get the jab?

The question is a complicated one, and the answer even more so.

The Current State of Play Firstly, the Federal Government has not mandated compulsory vaccinations.

While there is potential scope for such a mandate (e.g. pursuant to the Biosecurity Act 2015 (Cth)) the Feds have not public entertained the idea of making vaccination compulsory pursuant to existing legislation or introducing a new law requiring same.

Similarly, there does not appear to be any current NSW legislation that expressly dictates whether or not an employer can require an employee to get vaccinated and whether refusal to do so would be grounds for dismissal.

The NSW State Government has however made clear that its position is that the only way out of lockdown is mass vaccination, earlier this week taking the unprecedented step of requiring construction workers to be vaccinated if they want to be able to work in and around COVID hotspots in south-west and western Sydney.

What does employment law tell us?

In the absence of specific legislation on the matter, one must look to employment law for guidance.

In New South Wales, employers have a general obligation pursuant to work health and safety legislation to provide and maintain a work environment that is without risk to health and safety and to monitor the health of workers and the conditions of a workplace for the purpose of preventing illness or injury.

This obligation, of course, extends to COVID-19 and is generally limited to actions that are “reasonably practicable” i.e. reasonably able to be done in all of the circumstances.

Until now this duty encapsulated things like employers facilitating “work from home” arrangements where possible, requiring workers to practice social distancing in the workplace and facilitating good hygiene by providing sanitiser or hand washing stations – but could this duty extend to ensuring all workers in a workplace are vaccinated for not only their own safety, but the safety of everyone else?

Employees also have a role to play of course. At law, an employee must comply with the “reasonable and lawful” instructions of their employer when it comes to workplace health and safety.

Until recently, due to the lethargic nature of the national vaccine roll-out, such a direction would have been neither “reasonably practicable” or “reasonable and lawful” due to a lack of supply of vaccines. As vaccines become more readily available however, a stronger argument emerges supporting an employer’s right to

The challenge in determining the question is that what is considered “reasonably practicable” and/or “lawful and reasonable” depends on the facts of each individual case.

For example, if an employee works alone, remotely from their home and has little to no exposure to any other staff or customers it would be far less reasonable to require them to be vaccinated than a staff member who, for example, works at the checkout of a busy supermarket.

Can I be sacked for refusing to get vaccinated?

Given how new the COVID-19 pandemic is we don’t have any COVID-specific case law to look to for direction – YET. We can, however, look to similar past cases for guidance, such as those in which employees have refused the direction of an employer to get the flu vaccine.

Earlier this year, the Fair Work Commission (FWC) found that an employee who was terminated from her employment for refusing to get a flu vaccine was not unfairly dismissed (Ms Bou-Jamie Barber v Goodstart Early Learning [2021] FWC 2156).

The employee worked at a national childcare centre which introduced a policy in mid-2020 mandating that all staff needed to be vaccinated against the flu unless they had a medical exemption indicating that it was unsafe for them to do so.

The relevant employee objected, offering up what the FWC described as “vague certificates” which referenced certain medical conditions but offered “nothing substantive” supporting the proposition that she should be medically exempted from the employer’s vaccine requirement.

The FWC ultimately found that the employer’s direction for its staff to be vaccinated against the flu was reasonable and lawful.

It is important to note that in making this determination the FWC noted a number of specific, arguably unique factors present in that case. Firstly, the childcare industry is already highly regulated with targeted legislation aimed at children’s safety.

In addition, the FWC also noted that a requirement for employees to be vacci-

nated in the industry was not uncommon, given that staff were already required to be vaccinated against things like whooping cough and measles to qualify the employer for Government childcare subsidies.

Two further compulsory flu vaccination cases followed the childcare centre case in early 2021, namely the matters of Maria Corazon Glover v Ozcare [2021] FWC 2989 and Jennifer Kimber v Sapphire Coast Community Aged Care Ltd [2021] FWC 1818.

The matters of Glover and Kimber both concerned aged care workers who refused the direction of their employers to get flu vaccinations following public health orders in each of QLD and NSW requiring same. Glover argued that she’d had an anaphylactic reaction to a flu vaccine when she was a child and should therefore be exempted from the vaccination requirement. Kimber claimed she’d suffered an allergic reaction to a past flu vaccine in the form of a skin condition.

In both matters the FWC found that the respective dismissals were neither unfair, nor harsh, unjust or unreasonable.

What is clear is that employers should carefully consider the specific operational contexts of their businesses in determining whether or not to implement a compulsory vaccination policy.

In conclusion The biggest challenge in answering this question is the lack of legislation or COVID-specific case law to guide us.

The matter has not yet been tested in the courts and therefore we don’t yet have the benefit of hindsight.

It would appear that there is no general legal impediment to an employer requiring an employee to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

It is also evident that in considering such a question a court is likely to consider the individual circumstances of each case as opposed to imposing a blanket rule that covers every scenario.

The Fair Work Commission has indicated in its recent findings that employers can require vaccinations where necessary to provide a healthy and safe workplace.

Lifting the community Food drives help ensure nobody is left wanting during toughest lockdown EMILY FESZCZUK

hile lockdown is keeping us apart, the community is coming together to help those who need some extra support.

Zoo Fitness and Penrith Community Kitchen are both running food drives and delivering hampers to people struggling during these tough times.

While the Owner of Zoo Fitness, Jason Lapin has had his gym closed from the start of lockdown, he said he still needed to help.

“Everyone is hurting but I think we just need to do what we can… we have a big base of members and social media following so I put it out there even if we just got one can of baked beans,” Mr Lapin said.

“It has been running now for five weeks, we started with five families and have been flooded with help from the community so now we can help over 50 families and counting.”

Mr Lapin said anyone can donate or reach out to receive a hamper.

“People can drop us off stuff before 11am on Tuesday and then we get it out and if

Penrith Community Kitchen Secretary, Gai Hawthorn said it is all hands on deck.

frozen meals for the elderly, homeless, schools and families,” Ms Hawthorn said.

“Councillor Tricia Hitchen has been amazing, ABCOE has been great, The Creative Fringe and Westcare have helped with blankets and we now have Checho’s, Tins and Wood and Percy Plunkett to help us with some cooking.”

While PCYC Penrith is currently closed, they are allowing the kitchen that is attached to open during the week for donations or COVID-safe pick-ups.

“People can drop-off or pick-up supplies at the kitchen between 12pm to 1pm, Monday to Friday and if they need an emergency hamper they can call PCYC between 9 to 5 and grab one,” she said.

“We would welcome any donations of fruit, veggies, some meat, bread and then staples like tea, coffee, long life milk, pasta sauce, two minute noodles and we really need toothpaste, toilet paper, soap and deodorant.”

Ms Hawthorn said she was proud to see the gym getting involved with a drive too.

“I was so happy to see what Zoo is doing because it is all about us coming together to help where we can during these challenging times,” she said.

COVID-19 CRISIS: THE IMPACT ON PENRITH

Families left devastated by hospital’s strict visitor rules EMILY FESZCZUK

ichelle Maroun is calling for more compassionate COVID-19 restrictions for families who have loved ones in intensive care.

The Penrith resident’s 45-year-old sister, Leonie Plain suffered a major stroke on Monday, August 2 and is now alone fighting for her life in Nepean Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Ms Maroun said it has been a very stressful time for her family, especially Ms Plain’s 14-year-old daughter who she had the stroke in front of.

“My sister’s whole life was her daughter Isabella and now she is sedated, and has had part of her skull removed for swelling to see if she can survive,” Ms Maroun said.

“We were only given a exemption because things were not

looking good… she is now still critical but stable so no more visits unless she is going to pass.”

While she understands the reasons behind the restrictions at the hospital, Ms Maroun said it is vital for her sister to have contact with her family.

“I know we are in a deadly pandemic but people in ICU are critical and we want to be able to hold her hand or stroke her forehead, to whisper words of encouragement and hope that the power of family can help miracles to happen,” she said.

“We are just asking for five minutes a day and you could stagger the visitors for ICU patients... I don’t want to put people at risk but there needs to be a balance so test me, suit me up, whatever they want, I will do it.”

Williams said they appreciate the importance of patients and their loved ones seeing each other but that the current outbreak has increased the level of vigilance required in the ICU. “Staff talk directly to patients and their families about how to safely stay in contact through limited visits for patients who are critically unwell and virtual methods such as staffassisted video calls and phone calls,” Mr Williams said.

“We will return to normal visiting arrangements as soon as it’s safe to do so.”

As the pandemic continues, Ms Maroun said she hopes common sense prevails for situations such as theirs.

“I am pleading that our leaders open their hearts and grant us the basic right to be with our loved ones when needed the most,” she said.

LOCAL NEWS Sri Lankan eatery to open in Penrith Lovers of South Asian cuisine are in for a treat, with a new Sri Lankan restaurant getting the green light.

Proposed for Memory Mall at 429 High Street, Penrith, the restaurant will be known as Black Pepper Sri Lankan Restaurant and will offer dine in and take away options, according to documents attached to the successful Development Application (DA).

While there are a number of Indian options currently available across the city, some of which offer Sri Lankan dishes, it is believed this is the first dedicated Sri Lankan restaurant to enter Penrith’s burgeoning food scene.

Penrith Council rubber-stamped the fit out of the existing food and drink premises earlier this month, however it is unknown when the restaurant will open.

FRESH MURDER CHARGE LAID A third man has been charged with murder in relation to the death of rapper Mak Muon in Emu Plains last year.

The 20-year-old was arrested in Doonside earlier this week and will face court in October.

Cruelty warning Police and WIRES reveal awful attack on kangaroos EMILY FESZCZUK

IRES Wildlife Rescue is urging residents around North St Marys to be on high alert after kangaroos have been found shot by a bow and arrow.

The acts of animal cruelty could also pose a risk to residents who walk through the open bushland and reserves that are used regularly for exercise.

WIRES North West Large Mammals Coordinator, MJ Skulander was one of the rescuers who attended the injured Eastern grey kangaroos.

“Four have been shot in total, I viewed one with an arrow in his neck but he disappeared and hasn’t been located then I found the mother with a joey in her pouch that had an arrow through her collarbone,” Ms Skulander said.

“It was quite an old injury with part of the arrow broken so we sedated her on-site but on assessment the vet said it was so infected that she couldn’t be saved so we had to euthanise her.”

While Ms Skulander and other WIRES volunteers will now hand raise the joey,

she said there is an ongoing high level of concern.

“The joey Finn is now with me and doing well and while bittersweet, another mother from the same mob got hit by a car so we have another joey Huckleberry who is with him,” she said.

“These gentle animals are already losing their natural habitat to development and the tiny pockets they have left are being invaded by people who chase them on illegal trail bikes and try to hurt them.”

Ms Skulander said people need to be reminded of the severity of the offences.

“Some people believe they are pests but they are actually protected and you need a licence to shoot kangaroos… riding illegally in reserves, using a bow and arrow as a weapon and animal cruelty are all big violations,” she said.

“Police are aware, they have the arrow and have ramped up monitoring so the offenders need to know that people are watching.”

WIRES Spokesperson John Grant is urging anyone with information to come forward.

“It is always confronting for WIRES volunteers to attend rescues where wildlife has been subjected to acts of cruelty,” Mr Grant said.

“It is actually an offence to harm any native species as they are protected by law in NSW and we ask that anyone witnessing cruelty to an animal or has information to please contact the Police or RSPCA.”

Half-century of love: Bryan and Bev celebrate milestone

Child care centre honoured for sustainability practices

T

ime flies when you’re having fun and Bryan and Bev Holland are celebrating 50 years of joy with their wedding anniversary on August 14.

The couple met in 1970 whilst both working at Guildford Railway Station.

They were married in Condobolin in 1971 and made Emu Plains their home in 1976.

“It was love at first sight for Bryan but when I first came from the bush and saw him get off the train I thought he looked like a long haired city git,” Mrs Holland said.

“It only took him a few weeks to win me over though and we were engaged soon after.”

Over 50 years, the pair have shared sad times, but many more good times with their four kids Matthew, Marcus, Sarah and Samantha, along with 12 grandkids and one great grandson who enrich their lives.

“We may not have been on big expensive holidays, but we have had a great life, filled with lots of love,” she said.

So what’s the secret to success?

“There are no real tips for a long successful marriage, except always trust each other, be there for each other, and look after each other,” she said.

The kids at WSUEL Penrith take great pride in caring for the environment.

Lockdown forces Sydney food manufacturer to think outside the box

R

eady-made meals are a hot item during Sydney’s extended lockdown and Blacktown based WeLove Kitchen (WeLove Pizza, WeLove Meals) and Rav’s Kitchen - are pushed to keep up with the evolving landscape.

‘We are a passionate start-up trying to keep abreast of the dynamic changes in the supermarket ready meals category,’ said WeLove Kitchen Owner, Mehreen Ahmed, whose company specializes in fresh, ready to eat meal products sold in independent grocery stores.

Mehreen’s partner, Anil Soni, is a veteran foodie who has been manufacturing food products in commercial quantities for over 20 years, supplying wholesale items under his company Rav’s Kitchen.

‘Rav’s Kitchen’s journey has been one of constant redefinition,’ said Anil Soni.

‘We continuously try out new things to plug holes in the market, relying on our partners to bring us interesting projects in line with consumers’ changing habits,’ said Anil.

‘We are two people who really love our food and we love to make convenient meals for others to enjoy too,’ said Mehreen.

‘The last 18 months has proven really difficult for us and all businesses in Greater

Sydney but by changing our product offering, it has meant that all our staff have maintained employment throughout and we are really proud of that,’ said Mehreen.

The pair share another passion and that’s for inclusion in the workplace, which they say is a big part of their recipe for success.

‘Almost 10 years ago, we were fortunate enough to partner with Neena at NOVA Employment Blacktown,’ said Anil, referring to Neena Sood, the Manager of the disability employment service located on Third Avenue.

‘We have had such a fantastic track record

of shared ongoing mutual successes, we look forward to another 10 years and beyond of collaboration,’ said Mehreen, who has set a company quota for what she calls ‘uniquely abled’ hires.

‘The quota is set at 40% which we’ve maintained, successfully for 3 years running now’ said Mehreen.

‘But headline, we are at 55% right now,’ referring to the operations’ combined staff with a disability, who Mehreen considers an integral part of the business.

Anil reveals both Rav’s Kitchen and WeLove Kitchen receive support from NOVA Employment, in all HR aspects of their business including, identifying roles during growth phases, collaboration on new hires, full training of new hires and ongoing assistance.

‘At the end of the day all of us here are in the business of people and when you have a collaborator who helps you with the people aspect of your business, it means you are freed up to focus on the bigger picture,’ said Mehreen.

And the Penrith Twin Cinema is there too – Hayden’s second cinema in Penrith at the time.

fter looking the goods earlier in the season, the wheels have fallen off St George-Illawarra like a cheap barbeque.

They may sit just two points outside the top eight but with a poor for and against and four straight losses, it’s hard to see them making a late charge.

If they are to make some sort of a statement, their chance comes this Friday night against a Penrith side that bounced back into winning form last weekend with a hard fought 20-14 disposal of the Roosters.

It was far from clinical from Penrith but the confidence they’d get out of that win – especially without Nathan Cleary – would have been enormous.

Cleary has again been named in the squad for this match at Suncorp Stadium, but whether he plays is another matter. The halfback is right to go, but whether you risk

It’s almost certain we’re headed for a Panthers v Rabbitohs showdown in week one of the Finals no matter what happens in the final month of the competition.

Adding to the confidence Ivan Cleary would have in the status quo, Matt Burton showed significant improvement last week, playing probably his best game in Penrith colours to help the side to victory. It was clear the Panthers missed Nathan Cleary’s game management towards the end of the contest, but that will come with more time for the likes of Burton and Jarome Luai.

Whatever halves combination Cleary ends up going with, it’ll get the job done.

As much as we’d like to see Penrith demolishing sides like they were at the start

of the season, it’s quite clear Ivan Cleary is taking the slow and steady approach at present. You don’t earn any extra competition points by thrashing sides in August, it’s all about ensuring you have a healthy, positive side on the park when the big games arrive. Cleary has a side that is rarely down in confidence, so that’s an aspect he doesn’t have to work on significantly. And as for the healthy squad, there’s every chance Penrith will have every player available come the first week of the Finals.

So what about this Dragons team?

Try as they might – and you can’t fault their effort in most games – they just don’t have the cattle to be winning big games.

They’ve conceded 484 points this season, double that of Penrith, and just don’t have the discipline and patience required to build what’s required to be a consistent winning side.

The broken leg to Ben Hunt was perhaps the final straw for the Dragons’ Finals chances – he’d been one of their best players in recent times and without his guidance it’s hard to see the side doing much over the last month of the regular season.

Tariq Sims is also missing due to suspension, but the Panthers will be without Kurt Capewell who also found himself on the charge sheet last weekend.

Meantime in a big blow for Penrith, Api Koroisau will miss the game after failing to have a contrary conduct charge overturned at the judiciary on Tuesday night.

The Dragons just don’t have enough tries in them to outscore Penrith in this one. I’m expecting a tight first half but the Panthers should put Anthony Griffin’s men away in the second. They’re just too professional to let this one slip.

Tip: Panthers by 16.

API LOSES BID TO PLAY ! Panthers coach Ivan Cleary is none from one in his new legal career after failing to get Api Koroisau off a contrary conduct charge at the judiciary on Tuesday night. Cleary opted to represent his number nine in what was essentially a throw at the stumps given Koroisau was facing a week out regardless of his plea. Panthers officials remain perplexed at why their hooker was charged; they legitimately feel it was a nothing incident that was just part and parcel of the game.

! Kurt Capewell will sit this weekend out after copping an early guilty plea to a Dangerous Throw charge early in last week’s win over the Roosters. Capewell’s previous record meant he was facing a one week ban no matter what he did, unless he fought the charge and won, which was deemed unlikely. Fellow forward Liam Martin was also charged out of last week’s game but only copped a monetary penalty. ! Penrith’s digital team posted the singing of last week’s victory song by the players without vision, given the strict rules in place around mask wearing indoors. While players and officials go above and beyond to follow the protocols, nobody wanted to risk somebody getting up in arms over a minor slip-up during the song. The victory tune was published with audio only.

! Penrith coach Ivan Cleary certainly hasn’t lost his sense of humour during the Queensland relocation. When fronting last week’s post-match press conference, he was called Nathan by a journalist. He quickly corrected him, before noting, “most of the questions are about Nathan anyway”.

! Tevita Pangai Junior’s new team mates have rallied around the big forward after a devastating personal blow last week.

Pangai Junior and his partner lost their unborn baby, rattling the 25-year-old who left the Penrith camp immediately. The tragedy meant he didn’t make his debut for the Panthers as planned last weekend.

He’s been named on the extended bench to take on the Dragons and Penrith officials will liaise with him this week over whether he takes the field.

! Penrith’s newest debutant, Taylan May (pictured), has the nickname Tiny. At 181cm tall, he hardly lives up to the name, so where does it come from? “That comes from when I was born and from growing up,” the 19-year-old said. “No one really knew my real name, they always thought it was Tiny. My dad nicknamed me Tiny because I was super small growing up. I shot up in Year 12 and started to get a bit taller, but it’s always been my name... it will be stuck with me.”

! Last Saturday’s Roosters v Panthers match was the second most watched program of the day on Foxtel. An average of 259,000 viewers tuned in to the Fox League broadcast and Andrew Voss’ call.

It was only pipped by the Sea Eagles v Storm blockbuster, which attracted 269,000 viewers. The latter game also picked up 266,000 viewers on Channel Nine, which is now broadcasting Saturday night football through to the end of the season. ! Happy birthday to injured Panthers winger Brian To’o, who turns 23 next week.

TAYLAN’S ONE BIG DEBUT REGRET NATHAN TAYLOR

aylan May is the name on everyone’s lips this week after enjoying one of the best NRL debuts by a Panther in several years.

The 19-year-old local junior got the surprise call-up late last week after Brent Naden was scratched and, despite the limited preparation and lack of footy recently, was a standout in his very first game.

And while most kids who make their NRL debut get to do it in front of a packed house with family and friends watching on, May had to do it all alone with 50,000 empty seats surrounding him.

“Obviously I wish they were there, especially my family and close friends because they’ve been with me through it all, but it is what it is,” May told Extra Time on Tuesday.

“But I felt pretty good out there… coach and the boys had faith in me and they trusted me, which made it easier.

“Coach made me feel comfortable and the boys made me feel comfortable. I knew they had my back, so it just made everything easier.”

game from the stands due to strict health and safety protocols in Brisbane last week.

Fortunately Tyrone, who is currently sidelined with a knee injury, was still a huge part of his little brother’s debut – handing him his first NRL jersey prior to the match while also speaking from the heart about what Taylan, affectionately known as ‘Tiny’, means to him.

The video of May’s jersey presentation was released online last Sunday evening, garnering thousands of views and plenty of tears.

“It was different to see that side of him, just hearing him say things like he loves me. He doesn’t really tell me that much, so it was pretty cool to hear… I didn’t know he had it in him,” May said of Tyrone’s emotional speech.

“It’s crazy, I remember watching his debut [in 2017]. He’s taught me a lot of things throughout pre-season and all that, and when we were little.

“Hopefully we can play together one day.

I just have to keep on training hard and just do the little things… whatever happens, happens.”

With Origin winger Brian To’o still sidelined for several weeks with an ankle injury, fans can look forward to seeing plenty more of Penrith’s newest sensation over the coming weeks.

Penrith’s dream of a NSW Cup premiership has been taken away again.

one of them has played some NSW Cup. From Friday’s squad to play St GeorgeIllawarra, Brent Naden, Moses Leota, Matthew Eisenhuth, Mitch Kenny, J’maine Hopgood, Jaeman Salmon, Matt Burton

and Izack Tago have needed NSW Cup this year.

The 21 squad members have played 68 seasons combined in the NSW Cup – or an average of three seasons each. And that’s

before you include the other abandoned lower grade competitions.

All of it plays a crucial role in rugby league education and development. You can’t erode the foundations for two years and expect the house on top to be unaffected.

So, what’s the solution? With no World Cup now, should there be some sort of Summer League? Abbreviate it. Experiment with it. Just do it.

Fox League’s Darcie McDonald was straight on it this week, tweeting; “When the lockdown is lifted @NSWRL should host a weekend carnival for the NSW and Ron Massey sides. Ensure a recruitment rep from every NRL club is present and strongly encourage them to pick players they can offer a train and trial deal – or better yet – a contract.”

Melbourne star Nicho Hynes was straight on it, himself a mature age debutant; “Well said! Great idea… I think it’s so important that the mid 20s players get some sort of look in for their resilience and dedication for continuing to follow their dreams of becoming an NRL player.”

Given all this, a huge congratulations to case in point Makahesi Makatoa. At 28, he’ll make his NRL debut for Parramatta on Saturday night. He’s spent nine seasons in the NSW Cup at Canterbury, Mounties, the Warriors and Eels. His last game of footy was two months ago in mid-June. Go well Big Mak!

I

t wasn’t the sexiest rugby league story of the week but it could be the most serious.

The New South Wales Rugby League has abandoned its five Major Competitions, including the NSW Cup or second tier competition in this State.

It’s hardly a big deal in comparison with the really serious COVID complications so many of us face in our daily lives. It’s a huge deal when you look at the situation through NRL blinkers.

It’s the second year running the feeder competition to the NRL has been wiped out by the restrictions associated with COVID. On one level it’s sad for those fringe players, dream chasers and lower grade knockabouts who, for various reasons, crave that 80 minutes of ‘reserve grade’ each week.

On a deeper level, how will the NRL suffer as a result down the track?

Much like the nation might.

South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett pulled no punches a few weeks ago when he described the lack of lower grade football as a serious issue for the game right now. He said clubs were being forced to pick players under–prepared and before their time. He said crucial years of development were being lost and we’ll only see the result in time.

To put it all in perspective, let’s look at this week’s Penrith squad of 21. Every single

CRICHTON READY FOR COMEBACK NATHAN TAYLOR

tephen Crichton will make his return from suspension tonight while halfback Nathan Cleary is rated a 50-50 chance of taking the field.

Cleary hasn’t worn a Panthers jumper since Round 15 against the Roosters after suffering a shoulder dislocation with the NSW Blues a week later. Since then, the 23-year-old has undergone intense physiotherapy to strengthen his shoulder in order to make a successful return to the paddock in time for the Finals.

For the second consecutive week, the playmaker was named on coach Ivan Cleary’s extended bench with a return to the NRL imminent – perhaps as soon as tonight against St George-Illawarra in Brisbane.

Speaking with the media via Zoom on Tuesday, star centre Crichton said Cleary is making leaps and bounds in his recovery.

“He’s real professional with what he does with his rehab. I guess he has to get through the

week this week, and it’s up to his confidence and the coach’s decision for when he comes back,” Crichton said.

It’s understood Cleary has been ticking every box in rehab and could’ve featured last weekend had it been a crucial match like a Semi Final. However, with Penrith well entrenched in the top four, timing more than anything will determine the former St Dominic’s student’s comeback.

“Coach has heaps of confidence in the players that we have right now. We’re definitely not rushing back our injured players, we’re definitely being smart about that,” Crichton said.

After missing last week’s gritty 20-14 victory over the Roosters due to suspension, Crichton is also ready to make an impact on his side before the important games roll around.

“It was a good game, the boys really narrowed it down and stuck to the game plan. It was a game we needed to win especially against a top four team,” Crichton said.

“It burns every time you don’t get that chance to go out with the boys. I definitely used last week to prepare myself mentally and physically, and I’m definitely keen to get back.”

emember the names Izack Tago, Taylan May, J’maine Hopgood and Lindsay Smith, for they are the next wave of superstars from the Panthers’ junior development production line.

All four players will be relied on heavily in 2022 with the departure of Kurt Capewell and Matt Burton at the end of the 2021 season.

All four have had a taste of first grade this year which could turn into an ‘all you can eat buffet’ next season when several first grade starting and bench spots are up for grabs.

Of the quartet I’d have to say Tago and May look the most likely to find a starting position in the Panthers Top 17 with Hopgood and Smith not far behind.

At 19 Taylan May only made his first grade debut on the wing against the Roosters last weekend and what a debut it was. May ran for 194 metres, made six tackle breaks and two line breaks. What was equally as impressive is that he didn’t look out of place against quality opposition. His style somewhat resembles that of Brian To’o and he has speed to burn.

Izack Tago, also only 19, is a secondrow forward who has also made a good impression on supporters and coaching staff alike with his kamikaze style runs on the edges and in the middle of the ruck.

Tago plays like he’s just drunk a litre of

rocket fuel and he has an elusive step to add to his arsenal.

The next to impress on the list is J’maine Hopgood, his improvement over his four first grade games has been impressive.

The former Harvey Bay Seagull, at 22, is the old man in the group but the plucky forward is tough and he tackles anything that moves.

Finally, 21 year-old prop Lindsay Smith is the man mountain of the quartet. He stands 194cm high, weighs in at 106kg and is still growing. Athletic and strong, it’s only a matter of time before Collins breaks into one of the best forward packs in the competition on a regular basis.

What game I’m looking forward to: It’s the Knights versus the Sharks, ninth versus tenth. The Knights are on 20 points with Cronulla on 18. If they lose the Sharks can kiss the Top 8 goodbye and start planning for season 2022 under incoming coach Craig Fitzgibbon.

My tips for the week: Storm, Panthers, Roosters, Bunnies, Cowboys, Sea Eagles, Warriors, Knights.

The final word: The amount of whinging Roosters coach Trent Robinson does after a loss is downright embarrassing.

Never one to give any credit to the opposition, he turns his attention to the referees who somehow always rob him of victory. Cry me a river Robbo! You’re becoming a bore.

fter handing out gold, silver and bronze to the NRL’s best performed players and coaches this season, I thought I would wrap up the Olympics with one last batch of medals.

As proven in Tokyo, this year has shot some young stars from obscurity to immediate stardom.

We saw Ariarne Titmus, Zac StubbletyCook and skateboarder Keegan Palmer have their lives changed overnight as gold medals turned them from relative unknowns to national heroes.

Taking a look at the 2021 NRL season, the same can be said for some bright lights who have had their chance to debut this year and make a name for themselves in first grade football.

Claiming gold, is none other than Warriors wonder-kid Reece Walsh.

The 18-year-old fullback was selected in the Queensland Origin side after just seven games at NRL level.

ENTERTAINMENT MOVIES, TELEVISION, MUSIC AND MORE – PENRITH’S LEADING ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE

MUSIC AND MAGIC AT THE COLISEUM EMILY FESZCZUK ward winning singer-songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke will be going back in time for her long awaited ‘Child in Reverse Tour’ later this year.

The classically trained pop star will bring some new material and old favourites to Sydney Coliseum Theatre at West HQ. Releasing her fifth studio album of the same name last year, Kate told the Weekender she is ready to get on the road from the end of September.

“It’s been a long time coming, this tour was supposed to happen a year ago so I

can’t wait to play some of these new songs, many of which we have never played live,” Kate said.

While the pandemic is clouding the planned shows, Kate is keeping her fingers crossed everything goes ahead as planned.

“Just on a more basic level to be in a room with real live humans is something I will never take for granted again and I think it will be pretty emotional for me,” she said.

Becoming a mother to her son Ernie inspired Kate to write what she says is her most “personal record”, with themes of childhood.

“Something that was at the forefront of my mind when I was writing these songs is that you are quite vulnerable as a child

and what happens to you can then resonate your whole life,” she said.

“Some songs on this record are about childhood trauma which makes it sound not fun to listen to but I promise there are fun poppy songs on there.

“I am a fan of having sad lyrics but wrapped up in a sort of feel good package.”

Being joined by a talented six-piece band, Kate said the shows later this year will include a mix of songs with some magic thrown in.

“There will be an element of a greatest hits tour, obviously we will play stuff off the new record and people are requesting things which is great so it will be a balance of kind of old and new,” she said.

“For me playing live has been at the centre of what I do and I love it… it is important for me to be entertaining, to take people on a journey, have some humour, and story telling at the heart of it.”

Finding the right financial balance A

s far as I’m concerned, the aim of building wealth is to be able to provide us with the lifestyle that we choose, both now and into the future. The recent property boom has seen many everyday people accumulate significant wealth. Unfortunately, this is not transferring to an increase in lifestyle opportunities.

I met with a client this week that had benefitted from the property boom and had managed to accumulate approximately $1 million in equity in her investment properties. She also owned her own place unencumbered.

Despite building enough wealth to easily meet all her financial goals, she was living very miserly and was unable to do a number of things due to lack of cash flow.

In fact, she was living week to week and was feeling some financial stress.

Furthermore, even minor events, such as maintenance to any property, an interest rate rise or a week or so without rent would place the client into a risky position. She may have insufficient funds to meet even basic living requirements.

This served as reminder that the aim of financial planning isn’t to make as much money as you can. It is to utilise your

income and assets in an effective way to achieve your financial goals. This client,

despite being a millionaire, was not able to maintain a lifestyle that befitted her

wealth. The client was certainly well placed to have sufficient wealth to meet her goals in retirement; in fact, calculations indicated that she would probably have enough funds to have more than twice the income she had now. This is an imbalance that makes little sense.

By releasing some equity in her properties, she was able to significantly improve her current disposable income, and would, in all likelihood, have more than enough to maintain her lifestyle in retirement.

Retaining all the investment properties would, most likely, result in making her more money over the next 15 years; however, it would also result in the client barely making ends meet and unable to afford many of her current goals, despite having substantial wealth.

The balancing of the financial needs of today and tomorrow is a common conversation in financial planning.

Most times, it is encouraging our clients to have an eye to the future not just the here and now.

In the case of the asset rich like this client, we have the reverse conversation. It is important to be prepared for the future, but not at the expense of your current lifestyle.

Be on alert for issues before and after the birth Pregnancy is an exciting time in anyone’s life, and caring for a pregnant dog, while exciting, can also be nerve racking even after her puppies have been born. There are many things you need to know to help your new mum after the birth of her puppies, one being milk fever.

Milk fever in dogs, also known as lactational hypocalcaemia or canine eclampsia, is a life-threatening condition that can develop in the bitch after whelping (giving birth). During lactation (producing milk) calcium is transferred from the mother to her puppies through her milk.

Usually this isn’t a problem, as the mother has access to calcium from her diet as well as from calcium stores in her body.

However, milk fever can occur when large amounts of calcium are drained from the mother’s system into her milk, which exceeds her ability to replace this loss resulting in life-threatening drop in blood calcium levels. This can often occur within the first two to four weeks of lactation.

While milk fever is caused by the excessive loss of calcium, the condition can also be caused and exacerbated by a few other factors, such as: • Receiving a non-balanced diet,

particularly one lacking in calcium • Excessive calcium supplementation prior to giving birth • Hormonal problems with the parathyroid gland, causing a disruption in normal calcium levels • When milk production is high, their body can’t keep up with the demand of calcium to produce milk • Low levels of albumin in the blood which can cause a disruption in the transportation of calcium Milk fever is commonly seen in small breed dogs nursing a large number of puppies. Breeds commonly affected include Chihuahuas, Shih-Tzus and Poodles. But no matter the size of breed all dogs can develop this condition.

There are a number of signs and symptoms associated with milk fever. At the beginning stages, signs are usually subtle, but progress rapidly and become more severe. Initial signs of milk fever include restlessness, heavy panting, stiff movements, vomiting and reduced appetite. Without treatment symptoms will progress to include loss of coordination, muscle tremors, inability to stand and seizures. Milk fever is a life-threatening condition and if left untreated can result in the death of the mother. .

enrith’s Olympic representatives have ended their Tokyo campaign in style, with diver Melissa Wu and basketballer Josh Green securing themselves a Bronze medal each last week.

For Penrith-born diver Wu, it was her first individual Olympic medal but second overall after winning Silver as a 16-yearold in Beijing in the 10m Synchro.

Wu’s Bronze in the Women’s 10m Platform event last week came in the final days of the Games where Australia took home an incredible 17 Gold, seven Silver and 22 Bronze medals – their best result ever.

Speaking to Channel Seven following her Bronze Medal win, the 29-year-old said it had been a long and challenging journey but one that has well and truly paid off.

“I’m feeling pretty excited about it, it has been a long road,” Wu said.

“I’ve been diving for a very long time now and I’ve had Synchro success in the past, but the last five years I’ve really focused on my individual event and to come away with Bronze here is just amazing.”

Tokyo was the western Sydney resident’s fourth Olympics after finishing just outside the medals in Rio, London and Beijing for 10m Platform.

Wu said she never gave up her dream of standing on the podium once again.

“I think I’m very goal driven and very focused and I’ve always had that dream to win another Olympic medal,” she said.

“I won a medal at my first Games when I was 16 in Synchro and I always wanted to do that individually, and I think I’ve gone from strength to strength over the years and worked really hard on my mindset.

“I knew coming here that I could do it and I think just that dream kept pushing me for all these years.”

Like Wu in her first Games in 2008, Penrith Basketball junior Josh Green collected a medal in his debut Olympics as well.

The 20-year-old was a member of the gutsy Australian Boomers side that created

history last Saturday night defeating Slovenia, 107-93, to win Australian men’s basketball’s first ever Olympic Medal.

Captain Patty Mills produced a performance for the ages, sinking a game-high 42 points as he led his team and country to an emotional Bronze medal in Tokyo.

While Green didn’t feature in the final match, the young Dallas Mavericks star did play in each of Australia’s other five games averaging just over three minutes per game off the bench.

Interestingly, the Boomers had two other former Penrith Basketball representatives on deck as well in assistant coaches Matt Nielsen and John Rillie.

Green has now returned to the US.

“All players, from my point of view, seem to be very clear on their role, are highly valued within the set up and are provided with opportunities to develop. That’s what I’ve seen Rachael do so well over the last couple of years.”

The Thunder is scheduled to begin their title defence against the Adelaide Strikers at North Sydney Oval on Saturday, October 16, before renewing their crosstown rivalry with the Sydney Sixers the next day at the same venue.

For Haynes, to be back playing in front of the Thunder Nation this season, would be “really uplifting”.

“If we can get to the point at the start of WBBL, where we’ll be able to play in front of our home crowd and perhaps bring some joy to what at times has been a tough situation, it would be a fantastic way to hopefully come out the other side of what’s been a challenging 12 to 18 months at different times,” she said.

enrith local Bryleeh Henry enjoyed her first season in the W-League so much that she’s coming back for

more.

The Werrington Downs resident, who recently signed a new one-year deal with the Western Sydney Wanderers, joined the club last season after making waves in the NSW National Premier League Women’s competition with Football NSW Institute where she scored seven goals in 10 games.

The 18-year-old former Xavier College student shone in her first W-League season and scored her first goals, a double against Melbourne City, towards the end of the season.

Wanderers W-League coach Catherine Cannuli said she’s excited to work with Henry again.

“Bryleeh is a dynamite on the field and her hard work over in the domestic competitions over the last few years has seen her reap the benefits in the W-League,” she said.

“She is a passionate western Sydney girl and has a wealth of talent that we are looking forward to continuing to develop.”

Henry, who was a member of the Junior Matildas back in 2019, said she was grateful for the chance to return to Wanderland for another season.

“I was beyond grateful for the opportunity to make my debut in the W-League last season and even more grateful to make it at my hometown club,” she said.

“I love the Wanderers. They are a familybased club and really take care of their players. The culture at the club is one I have never experienced before and having such an amazing culture really makes training every day so much more enjoyable.”

The Wanderers missed out on a spot in the W-League Finals last season, finishing in sixth position with just four wins to their name. In June, they promoted club legend Catherine Cannuli as the team’s head coach.

Henry said she’s ready to help to take the Wanderers to a Finals berth this upcoming season.

“I learnt so much and I felt I grew massively as a player and a person [last year],” she said.

“I know I still have a lot of work to do as a player to get where I want to be but I’m extremely excited to start working under

iants Netball have secured their second Minor Premiership in club history, with a coveted spot in the 2021 Super Netball Grand Final on the line this Saturday afternoon against the NSW Swifts.

In what’s being billed as the biggest local derby between Sydney’s two sides, the Giants will go into tomorrow’s match as slight favourites at Brisbane’s Nissan Arena.

It will be the first Finals Series for the Giants since 2018 when they last finished the regular season on top.

For the Swifts, it’ll be their third Finals campaign in a row, proving they’ll be a

more than formidable opponent for the Giants in Saturday’s Major Semi Final.

The Giants secured the Minor Premiership following a gritty 75-73 victory over the West Coast Fever last weekend.

The short-handed Giants recovered from six goals down to stun the Fever and book a clash with the Swifts for a place in the decider.

“We are just so elated to get that win, to finish at the top of the table and playing for a place in the (Grand) Final next week,” Giants captain Jo Harten said.

The loser out of the Giants-Swifts blockbuster will go on to face the winner out of Saturday’s Minor Semi Final between West Coast and Sunshine Coast.

The entire Super Netball Finals Series will be broadcast live on Channel Nine.

ussie star Rachael Haynes will lead Sydney Thunder’s title defence after re-signing with the club for the upcoming WBBL season.

“I just really enjoy playing for a club that stands for something and is aligned with the community in the way it is,” Haynes, who enters her third season as a captain, said.

“I’m really excited to be around for another 12 months.”

The 34-year-old has been at the Thunder since the beginning of WBBL and has been an integral part of two titles, the first in WBBL|01 then as captain for WBBL|06.

Last season’s success was made all the more significant by the unique situation of playing the entire tournament within a bio-secure ‘bubble’ due to the pandemic.

Haynes went to the top of the club’s WBBL run-scorers list last season passing the player she took over the captaincy from in 2019, Thunder great Alex Blackwell.

Blackwell, now the Thunder’s WBBL List Manager, said Haynes was a crucial signing given what she means to the club.

“Rachael is completely committed, and I think that’s what is quite inspiring to people around her,” she said.
