Players pay heavy price for night out Panthers trio stood down from first grade after breaching team protocol during trip to Melbourne TROY DODDS
hree rugby league stars have been dropped from first grade after they broke team protocol by hitting the town in Melbourne last weekend. Penrith Panthers captain Matt Moylan and team mates Peta Hiku and Waqa Blake will play reserve grade this weekend after coach Anthony Griffin took a no-nonsense approach to the situation. It is understood that following their 28-6 loss to the Storm last Saturday night, Griffin told his players that while they could enjoy a few drinks, they were not to leave the team hotel. Moylan, Hiku and Blake ignored the instructions and went out to experience Melbourne’s night life. While Griffin has dropped the trio from tonight’s game against South Sydney at Pepper Stadium, it is understood there was no incident during the night out. “The players have been dropped from the Panthers NRL side following a breach of team protocol,” the club said in a brief statement released on Tuesday. “The club now considers the matter dealt with and will be making no further comment.”
T
Panthers CEO Brian Fletcher was also in Melbourne last weekend but stayed at a different hotel to the team. Fletcher confirmed on Wednesday that he backed Griffin’s decision to drop the three players. Meanwhile, Phil Gould said he supported Griffin’s call “100 per cent” and responded to fans on social media who thought the punishment was too harsh. “Fans are entitled to be disappointed. I have no problem with them blowing up. But they need to understand these decisions make us stronger,” Gould said. He said the club took the right option, rather than the easy one. As the story began to break on Tuesday afternoon the TAB briefly suspended betting on tonight’s game between Penrith and Souths. The Panthers have been forced to name an inexperienced backline for the clash while Peter Wallace will take over the captaincy duties. It is anticipated that Moylan, Hiku and Blake will be available for selection against Cronulla next weekend. Tomorrow, they’ll play in the Intrust Super Premiership. Don’t miss Penrith’s leading coverage of rugby league. Our Extra Time pull-out can be found in today’s paper.

ike a screaming toddler on the floor of a supermarket, Mark Latham knows that the louder he gets, the more attention he is likely to secure. And for some reason, we keep giving him a platform. Latham was last month sacked by Sky News after the latest in a long list of misdemeanours; a list that should have seen him off our TV screens long ago. Sky News, despite very quickly losing its independence and taking up leftbashing as its primary agenda, had no choice but to turf Latham. His description of a Sydney Boys High School student as “gay” for appearing in an International Women’s Day video was simply the tip of the ice berg. Bosses at Sky were already dealing with significant issues caused by Latham’s path of destruction, particularly in relation to comments he made about former NSW Premier Kristina Keneally and broadcaster Wendy Harmer. Keneally is winning fans in her new media role at Sky but was threatening to sue her employer over Latham’s comments. Latham had essentially said that Ms Keneally had acted corruptly when she was Premier, while he said Ms Harmer had been a failure in her media career over the past four decades and was only able to secure her current employment as a broadcaster with the ABC because she is a female with a disability. Sky has now issued grovelling on air apologies to both Ms Keneally and Ms Harmer. Latham resembles a schoolyard bully and we’ve seen it all before.

A few years ago Latham targeted former Australian of the Year and domestic violence campaigner Rosie Batty through his various media roles, including as a columnist at the Australian Financial Review and a contributor to various radio stations, including 2UE in Sydney and Triple M. At one stage he accused Ms Batty of being part of a feminist group using domestic violence for political gain and a campaign “against all Australian men”. Here was a woman who, dealing with the death of her son at the hands of his father, opted to become the public face of a crisis so often dealt with behind closed doors, and all Latham could do was employ bully-boy tactics in a desperate attempt for attention. There’s more, too. Remember when it was revealed that he was using a fake Twitter account to abuse women?

And we can go right back to the 2004 Federal Election, to that famous handshake between Latham and John Howard in a radio studio, to see signs of how Latham tries to bully and intimidate. He popped up on ‘60 Minutes’ a few years ago, encouraging people to donkey vote ahead of the 2010 election. Run-ins with the media (including a famous broken Daily Telegraph camera) and a sexist and offensive swipe at Fiona Scott in the wake of the ‘sex appeal’ drama also form part of Latham’s long list of indiscretions. One thing is for sure – Australia dodged a significant bullet when it shunned Latham and Labor at the 2004 election. Perhaps Latham never got over that crushing defeat, and his grudge still lingers some 13 years later. Whatever the case, Latham is in my view a sexist bully that really has no worthy contribution to make to the political conversation in this country. He should have been on the media black list long ago, but for some reason he’s been given chance after chance and keeps popping up again. The mainstream media seems to forgive his sins much quicker than the general public. Latham, who plans to continue his tirades on social media, says that he was fired from Sky News for doing what he was told to do. And there may be some truth to that. After all, Sky knew what it was doing. Latham had form, and Sky embraced it. Latham has crossed the line one too many times. Let’s hope that his sacking from Sky allows us the opportunity to say good riddance once and for all.

Trees pose danger, says Councillor Crameri calls for Council to investigate possible changes to tree policy ALENA HIGGINS
enrith Council has been asked to reassess its tree policy in the wake of a spate of fallen trees. Councillor Kevin Crameri requested Council re-examine its position after several forest trees were recently blown over during the ‘big wet’. He said tall trees with shallow root systems such as Eucalyptus trees “should not be standing singly” and posed a “danger” in built-up areas. “These trees in a forest are not a problem as they all take the brunt of the wind and they can stand,” he said. “Maybe we need to replace them with something that doesn’t grow so high.” Lenny Be Sousa was driving down Ninth Avenue, Llandilo, two weeks ago when he saw a “mother of a tree” come crashing to the ground. “It was lucky there were no cars under it when it came down,” he said. “If anyone had been in the car they wouldn’t have survived.” Mr Be Sousa, a worker at nearby Golden Valley Eggs, said many trees had fallen down along Ninth Avenue. “When you get a lot of rain like this, the ground goes soft and if the wind picks up, the trees just go over,” he said.

SMITH STREET AUTO CENTRE He said in some cases the trees clipped power lines on their way down, plunging local produce into jeopardy. “One, you can’t keep the cool rooms going and two, if it takes too long to turn the power back on, the eggs go bad,” he said. “It’s not just the eggs, it’s vegetables and fruits and all sorts of things. There are businesses on Ninth Avenue that can
lose lots of money when the power goes down.” Cr Crameri is also concerned about potential legal issues. “We have got a lot of people with big trees in their backyard and Council saying you can’t get rid of them because they are healthy,” Cr Crameri said. “But if it falls down and takes their house out, who is actually liable?”

t Clair High School is set to rise from the ashes with more than $20 million to be invested into its future. Education Minister Rob Stokes and Mulgoa MP Tanya Davies formally announced on Monday that St Clair High School will be extensively rebuilt. After a fire caused significant damage in June 2014, destroying most of the school, the money will be invested to rebuild it with significantly improved facilities. The school will feature an Innovation Centre, offering 16 future-focused classrooms with a variety of flexible learning spaces to help encourage students by embracing a university campus feel. Mr Stokes said he made a priority of visiting the high school to assess the extent of the damage and understand the community’s needs after becoming Education Minister this year. “It was clear to me how important it is to get this redevelopment happening. Mrs Davies has worked tirelessly on behalf of the St Clair community for the rebuilding project, to not just replace the lost classrooms, but substantially upgrade the facilities offered,” he said.

Parents of Year 11 and 12 students are being urged to check school bags this week for consent forms for a free meningococcal ACWY vaccine to protect their children against the rare but deadly disease. NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard said the State Government’s $9 million NSW Meningococcal W Response Program was introduced due to an unprecedented outbreak of meningococcal W disease.
“The NSW Government has acted swiftly to protect the most vulnerable group of people – those in their late teens – from this rising threat,” Mr Hazzard said. “I strongly encourage parents to take advantage of this very important opportunity and sign and return the consent forms as meningococcal disease can result in lifelong complications, or even death.” Meningococcal W is now the most
common strain of the disease in Australia, with cases in NSW virtually tripling from nine in 2015 to 26 in 2016. It also has triple the mortality rate (14 per cent) of other strains. Dr Vicky Sheppeard, Director of Communicable Diseases at NSW Health, said that the meningococcal ACWY vaccine, which protects against four of the strains of the disease, will be offered in Term 2.

ocal police officers and community members have helped combat crime in Penrith. The most recent quarterly data from the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) has shown the exceptional work of local police in preventing crime. Two crime categories have seen a dramatic drop in frequency with ‘Break and enter dwelling’ down 24.7 per cent and ‘Steal from motor vehicle’ down 17.2 per cent in the Penrith region. State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres has praised officers in the Penrith Local Area Command for their tireless efforts. “I am really pleased to see downward trends in a number of crime categories,” he said. “This latest data from BOCSAR is a testament to our local police and their dedication to the safety and protection of our community.” In the 24 months to December 2016, 16 out of 17 major crime categories either fell or remained stable. These include murder, domestic violence and robbery. Mr Ayres has congratulated police for their hard work, and the community for supporting officers who put their lives on the line for our safety. “I would like to thank all the communities in the Penrith electorate for being vigilant and establishing proactive partnerships with our police, ensuring public safety concerns are properly addressed,” he said. “Whether out on trail bikes or walking the beat, it’s been great to see the prevalence of officers in our community undertaking targeted policing to reduce local crime trends.” Newly pledged NSW Police Commissioner, Michael Fuller said the hard work and tenacity of police officers is paying off. “We will be undergoing a re-engineering process with the NSW Police Force with our focus squarely on crime reduction,” he said. “That’s my commitment to putting our community first in everything we do.” In the Sydney greater region as a whole, there has been an increase in drug possession and use crimes. Commissioner Fuller said he isn’t too concerned: “The increase in drug possession statistics gives me confidence as it’s telling us we are succeeding in disrupting the supply of illicit substances.”

Station parking will only get worse Council asked to investigate options to implement more commuter car parking at St Marys ALENA HIGGINS
ouncillor Todd Carney has urged Penrith Council to investigate ways to alleviate the commuter car park crisis currently engulfing St Marys. The East Ward representative said the Council-owned car park behind Queen Street is about 90 per cent full by 7.30am and cars are starting to park in unmarked spots in desperation. “We’ve got to give them some relief,” he told the Weekender. “It’s just chockers all up and down the street.” Cr Carney said commuters “through no fault of their own” are having to leave earlier to secure a spot and are being forced to park further and further away, prompting safety concerns when they have to trek back to their vehicle after dark. “A lady who works at Parramatta gets to the station at 7.15am so she can grab a park, but then she gets to work an hour earlier,” he said. “It isn’t the best thing for her, but that’s what she has to do at the moment.” But it is not only commuters who are feeling the pinch. The commuter car parking shortage is

Cr Carney, who has requested Penrith
Council prepare a report outlining its options to help ease the situation in the short term, said the current state was not “sustainable” and predicted it would only get worse when the M4 toll is reinstated and more people choose to take public transport.
St Marys’ multi-deck station car park was built by Transport for NSW in 2010 and can accommodate 500 cars. A spokeswoman for Transport for NSW said there are currently no plans for further commuter parking at St Marys at this stage.

Students pay tribute to the fallen Sombre scenes as school students honour war heroes at special ANZAC Day service in Penrith EMILY NEWTON
undreds of students and staff from local schools filled the stands of Penrith Paceway for a commemorative ANZAC Day service on Tuesday. The service is an annual tradition held in Penrith prior to the April school holidays. The clouds parted to let the sun shine onto the ceremony, which was attended by Penrith Mayor John Thain and guest of honour Corporal Daniel Kilbey of 176 AD Squadron – 9FSB, RAAF Base Richmond. This year’s hosts, Matthew Thomas and Meredith Colagiuri from St Paul’s Grammar School, guided the student service with integrity. 45 local schools attended the event to lay wreaths, books and tokens of remembrance. The students stood in respectful silence as the catafalque party, members of the 21 Army Cadet Unit Penrith, marched in honour of fallen soldiers as their boots on gravel echoed through the grounds. Cpl Kilbey encouraged students to remember their sacrifices and keep the spirit of the ANZACs alive in his oration. “Remember the ANZACs, their determination, their courage,” he said.
H
Reverend Ted Walker led the crowd in a prayer of remembrance for the brave, fallen diggers. “Help us this day to remember the sacrifice of the first ANZACs, Australian and New Zealander, and the generations of men, women and children who have died in the cause of liberty and peace,” he said. “Help us to remember the mateship, agony, courage and compassion of war service, but save us from ever glorifying the horror and tragedy of war.” Students from the Emu Plains Public School Choir stood proudly and sang ‘Amazing Grace’. Craig McGown, Zac Egan, Madeline Eneberg and Adam Cameron from Winmalee High School played the ‘Last Post’ on a quartet of trumpets. Moments after the service concluded, the clouds gathered and it began to rain again. St John’s Ambulance volunteers were on hand to provide a few students with first aid, who were affected by the sudden but short-lived heat. ANZAC Day is commemorated on April 25 and there will be traditional dawn service ceremonies in both Penrith and St Marys. The Weekender will run a special ANZAC Day coverage on Friday, April 21.

Man who stabbed mother and girlfriend released on bail
The man accused of stabbing his mother and girlfriend with a sword and machete at Emu Plains last year has been granted strict conditional bail after a bed became available in a mental health unit. Clinton Graeme Walker, 26, faced Magistrate Roger Clisdell last Friday, the same magistrate who refused him bail a month earlier, and was granted release to a private Sydney hospital. This was despite opposition from the Crown prosecutor, who pointed out the facility was “a voluntary unit and he can walk out at any time”. However, Walker’s lawyer argued his client would be supervised 24 hours a day. He said it would be a condition of his bail that he remain there at all times and if he didn’t, bail would be revoked. Determining treatment was a better outcome “than leaving him in custody”, Magistrate Clisdell granted him bail. He was ordered to be transported by his uncle and present at admissions within four hours of release. Walker was arrested on December 5 and later charged with two counts each of ‘causing wounding/grievous bodily harm to a person with intent to murder’ and ‘wound a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm’, following the harrowing early-morning attack. The defence contend Walker, a diagnosed schizophrenic, suffered a psychotic break and will likely be found not guilty by way of mental illness. Magistrate Clisdell had previously refused to release Walker back into the general population, saying there was “insufficient safeguards within the mental health system”, but did infer he would be open to granting him liberty to go into care. His mother was in court last Friday and strongly supported his application for release. Walker is due to face Penrith Local Court again for committal this week.
Man left with huge debts after takeaway run goes sour
An early morning takeaway run has proved extremely costly for a suspended driver, who wrote off his expensive car after crashing into a fence. Penrith Local Court heard Taylor Gibson’s vehicle was subject to a loan and was worth more than $50,000 before he decided to illegally drive to a fast food establishment on Mamre Road, St Marys when he couldn’t sleep, crashing the car on his way home. The 19-year-old fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with ‘negligent driving’, ‘driving while suspended’ and ‘failing to give particulars’. His lawyer explained he left the scene of the crash because he knew he was a suspended driver and “in the back of his mind” he was also aware he was subject to a good behaviour bond. Magistrate Stephen Corry had little sympathy for the young man however, saying he had no one else but himself to blame for the serious financial burdens that flowed from the offence. “It is all entirely self inflicted because you didn’t take any notice of your suspension,” he chastised. Magistrate Corry suggested the former locksmith apprentice “go round looking for a few jobs” because he would need extra work to pay off all of his debts, pointing out he would be adding the state of NSW to the growing list. “I hope having to pay it all off will cause you to reflect on the stupidity of your actions,” he said. He was convicted, disqualified for 12 months, and fined $2,100.
Man was “in a rush” when he failed to pay for petrol
A man with an unenviable criminal history has been slapped with a hefty fine after failing to pay for petrol, despite settling the debt. Dario Poser fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday after he was busted leaving
a service station after filling up at the bowser. Poser insisted it was an honest mistake. “I was just in a rush that day and totally forgot... I went back and paid for it,” he said. But Magistrate Stephen Corry questioned the time it took him to settle the debt. “Why has it taken you until now to pay for it?” he demanded. “It totally went out of my mind,” Mr Poser replied, claiming he had been busy with work. However, Magistrate Corry wasn’t buying it, saying he should have been propelled into action when police issued him a Court Attendance Notice for the offence. “Didn’t that suddenly put it in your head?” he asked. “I didn’t think it was that serious,” came the reply. “You’re not a babe in the woods, you have been to court for very serious matters in the past so you know what can happen when you go to court,” Magistrate Corry said. “Mr Poser, I can’t ignore your antecedence which stretches 12 years,” he concluded before convicting him and slugging him with a $500 fine.
Hefty fines after motorcyclist was hit with raft of charges
A provisional motorist has been ordered to surrender his licence after failing to obey the road rules. Stephen Bean faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with low-range drink driving, speeding and riding an unrestricted motorcycle. When asked what he had to say for himself, the offender kept it short. “Not much, only that I stuffed up,” he said. Magistrate Stephen Corry decided to sum it up for him. “Well, to put it mildly, you were speeding along the road, having drunk alcohol,
on a motorbike that was much more powerful than you were allowed to ride,” he said. “Last time I checked, I didn’t think P1 drivers could have any alcohol.” He was convicted, disqualified for four months and fined $300 for the drink driving charge, fined $400 for speeding 100km/h in a 70km/h zone and $200 for driving a motorcycle greater than the restriction on his licence.
Man who dragged officers remains behind bars
The man accused of dragging two undercover police officers with his car at St Marys in an attempt to flee apprehension has been refused bail. Jared Rose, 20, appeared before Penrith Local Court via videolink last Thursday to hear the decision handed down. Magistrate Stephen Corry said he was not satisfied cause had been shown as to why his detention was not justified and refused his release. Rose has pleaded not guilty to ‘using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention’ and ‘driving while disqualified’. He is scheduled to defend the charges at a hearing on June 21.
“Careless” man has drink driving charges dismissed
A magistrate has lambasted a careless driver, before dismissing his drink driving charge. Magistrate Stephen Corry told Peter Byron Morgan it was clear from his record he “just doesn’t exercise care”. Penrith Local Court heard Morgan, who was on a good behaviour licence at the time, was caught low-range drink driving and failing to stop at a stop line. His lawyer contended his need for his licence was great, submitting the businessman would be forced to spend upwards of $500 a day on Ubers and taxis to meet clients. Magistrate Corry noted the drink driving charge appeared to be at the bottom end of low-range before dismissing the charge.

Lemongrove: Duo who stole mail arrested and charged
A man and a woman have been arrested and charged over mail theft that occurred in the Lemongrove area a few weeks ago. The male, a 37-year-old from Emu Plains, was arrested and charged with shoplifting offences in Emu Plains on Wednesday, March 29. Once he was identified by police, he was further charged in relation to the mail theft. He will appear in Penrith Local Court on Thursday, May 4. The woman, a 31-year-old also from Emu Plains, was arrested in the early hours of Saturday, April 1 and charged with ‘larceny’. She was to appear in court on Thursday, April 6. Both were refused bail.
Werrington Downs: Couple arrested after stealing tools
A couple have stolen over $6,000 in power tools following a stealing rampage across western Sydney. Officers from Penrith Police Station attended a house at Werrington Downs on Tuesday, March 28 where they arrested a 40-year-old female and a 34-year-old man in relation to a number of stealing offences. It is alleged that the thefts covered Londonderry, Rouse Hill, Dural and Rydalmere. The man was charged with ‘larceny’, a number of driving offences, pawning offences and breaking an AVO. The female was charged with ‘larceny’.
Penrith: Man exposes himself to woman at shopping centre
A man has touched a woman’s foot before exposing himself to her in the middle of Nepean Village shopping centre. On Monday, March 27, the victim was seated waiting at the shops when the accused approached her. It is alleged that he asked her for a cigarette as he sat down in front of her.
The man then touched the woman’s foot, before standing up and exposing his genitalia in front of her. The incident was reported to Penrith police. Later, on Wednesday, March 29, the 28-year-old male from Kingswood was arrested at the Nepean Village Liquor Land. He was arrested and charged with shoplifting a bottle of wine from the store and ‘possession of a knife in a public place’. Following a review of CCTV footage, he was also charged with ‘assault with an act of indecency’ in relation to the earlier incident.
St Clair: Trail bike riders had disqualified licences
At about 4.35pm on Tuesday, March 28 police were patrolling Cook Parade, St Clair where they saw two trail bikes riding next to each other. One rider was stopped by officers who made checks against his licence where it was revealed that the 21-year-old Werrington Downs man was driving with a disqualified licence. The second rider, a 23-year-old Glenmore Park man approached police a short time later, where it was also revealed that his licence was disqualified. Both were charged with multiple driving offences and will appear in Penrith Local Court on April 18.
Werrington: Man and woman assaulted on Victoria Street
Two people were taken to Westmead Hospital following an assault on Victoria Street last week. At about 11pm on Thursday, March 30, emergency services were called after a 36-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman were reported to have head injuries. Both were treated at the scene before being taken to Westmead Hospital. A 29-year-old Werrington man was arrested at the scene and taken to Penrith Police Station. He was charged and will appear in court later this month.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY
Why you need a Will We are running a promotion at Complete Legal & Conveyancing for the rest of April encouraging people to do something about their estate planning. If you make an appointment to see us in relation to a Will, Power of Attorney, or Enduring Guardianship we will give you a 50 per cent discount on your standard estate planning documents. What is a Will? A Will is a document in which you set out who you would like to receive your assets when you die. In your Will you must appoint an Executor who will be in charge of ensuring that the terms of your Will are executed correctly. You must also decide what you want to have happen to any assets you own in your sole name. If you are married or in a de facto relationship you should have a Will, even if you intend to leave everything you have to your partner, and your Will should dictate what happens to your Estate when both of you die. If your Will is not validly prepared in accordance with the Succession Act, your assets may end up in the wrong people’s hands. What is a Power of Attorney? A Power of Attorney is a document that allows you to appoint a person or people to assist you in the management of your financial affairs. This means that if you are incapacitated or are unable to manage your financial affairs, for example if you have dementia or Alzheimer’s, or are otherwise incommunicado, then the person or people you appoint can do things like access your bank accounts, pay your
bills, sign contracts on your behalf, buy and sell real estate on your behalf as well as a range of other functions. What is an Enduring Guardianship? An Enduring Guardianship is a document that allows you to appoint a person or people to make decisions for you in relation to your health and lifestyle if you cannot make these decisions yourself. Your guardian can decide things like what medical treatment you receive, decide where you live, and decide what other lifestyle and domestic services you receive. We like to compare having a Will, a Power of Attorney, and an Enduring Guardianship to an affordable insurance policy. You tuck them away in the drawer and hope that you never need them, however if something unexpected happens, you are really glad you have them. In the absence of these documents your family could end up in Court fighting to be able to help you when you need it. Remember, if you contact us before the end of April and make an appointment to see us, we will give you a 50 per cent discount on your standard estate planning documents. Standard estate planning documents include simple Wills, Powers of Attorney and Enduring Guardianships. You can contact us at Complete Legal & Conveyancing on 1300 266 529 or visit us at Suite 11, 354-360 High Street, Penrith. Council pushes case for rail
Truckies locked out of rest stop RMS stands firm and won’t remove gates on The Northern Road ALENA HIGGINS
ruckies travelling through Penrith no longer have a place to rest or check their loads after Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) installed gates on an unofficial parking bay, preventing drivers from getting in. Dean Smith, owner of Winston Express Haulage in St Marys, said it was a blow to the transport industry after a similar spot on Richmond Road was shut off to drivers by the RMS about 18 months ago due to people dumping rubbish. “They are reducing as the urban sprawl continues and you’re losing out on more safe areas to park and go to bed,” he said. “All they are going to do now is park in the industrial areas or a residential area and that’s going to upset other people, so what do you do?” An RMS spokeswoman said the barriers were fixed to the entrance and exit points of the heavy vehicle inspection bay on The Northern Road late last year, to ensure the site could be used for planned enforcement activities. “The inspection bay has been operating for more than 20 years and plays an important part in monitoring heavy vehicle safety and compliance in western Sydney,” she said.
T
The RMS has installed gates at the heavy vehicle inspection bay on The Northern Road between Wentworth Road and Bradley Street, preventing truck drivers from using it as a safe rest area. Photo: Melinda Jane “In recent years, heavy vehicle operators have been using the site as an unofficial parking bay and rest area, resulting in the need to cancel planned enforcement activities. “The installed gates will remain closed when the site is not in operation.” Last month, Councillor Kevin Crameri called on Penrith Council to write to the RMS to point out the “gravity of the situ-
ation” and to ask them to reconsider the decision. Cr Crameri said to take away an area that allowed truck drivers to meet their required breaks and check their loads was “really a danger to the whole transport industry”. According to an RMS map, the closest truck rest areas are at Glenbrook to the west, or Clarendon to the north.
A north-south rail line from Marsden Park to Campbelltown has been identified by Penrith Council as the biggest “game changer” for the region’s future. Council endorsed its preferred priorities and vision for the future during last month’s Ordinary Meeting, with a northsouth passenger rail line and improved transport connections sitting front and centre. The items will be outlined in Council’s submission on the draft West District Plan, which applies to Penrith, Hawkesbury and Blue Mountains Local Government Areas, and will be used to guide planning across Greater Sydney and at a district level. The district plan is one of six to be included in Towards a Greater Sydney 2056, which outlines a vision for a metropolis of three cities including a Western City, which encompasses the Western Sydney Airport aerotropolise and the strategic centres of Penrith, Liverpool, Blacktown and Campbelltown-Macarthur. Mayor John Thain was quick to assure his fellow Councillors that Council was doing everything in its power to promote its case, even “bordering on harassment” to get its views across at every opportunity. Council believes rail will unify western Sydney, with a new line allowing workers and the general public to access the jobs and services that are currently isolated in the strategic centres across the two districts. Resolving issues surrounding housing growth is also on Council’s agenda.

Community
Community rallies behind Makayla EMILY NEWTON
ocal outpourings of support for young Makayla, the daughter of Trevor Gordon, who was killed in a motorcycle accident last week, have been described by his extended family as a “miracle”. Makayla tragically lost her mother and sisters in a car accident several years ago and was left without a family after her father was killed in last week’s crash. Trevor Gordon’s cousin, Kristy Armitage, first spoke to the Weekender last week, searching for help in supporting Makayla. “Trevor lost his partner and two of his daughters earlier and now his youngest, Makayla, has no parents, no family,” Ms Armitage said. Within hours of the story appearing on the Weekender’s website last Thursday, the Penrith community opened their hearts to reach out and help. Belinda Erich and Donna Hildon of Supremacy Funerals and Shane Muscat from S&L Concrete have ensured the family does not need to worry about the financial burden of funeral costs, helping set Makayla up for her next difficult chapter in life. “I don’t think I could ever show enough
L
appreciation for how the community has gotten behind it,” Ms Armitage said. “I don’t think there are any words to describe how thankful I am, especially to Supremacy and to Shane from S&L Concrete, and not only them but the community. “From the bottom of my heart, I just can’t believe it. I’m still in shock.” Ms Armitage said Makayla will always have a home in the love of the extended family and is currently in the care of her maternal grandmother. She said that moments like this make her proud to call western Sydney and the Penrith region home. “If it’s needed, we really come together, somehow in someway,” she said. With the support of Supremacy Funerals, S&L Concrete and the community, Mr Gordon’s funeral will be held on Saturday, where Makayla will be able to say a loving goodbye to her father. “You hear about the little girl, and the tragedy, and it touches you,” Ms Hildon said. While she may not understand it today, Makayla will never be alone with the love of the Penrith community behind her. pool heating, we assumed there would be some company, Council recommended or otherwise, who would want this material for recycling purposes. Truck tyres, conveyor belts etc are all desired and sought after by rubber recyclers, who boast about the second life uses this material provides, but when it comes to rubber solar tubes, no one is in the least bit interested. Penrith Council’s recommendations of probable recyclers drew a blank, so we started in earnest to research who would be interested in recycling this wonderful amount of rubber. Planet Ark and dozens of commercial tyre and rubber recyclers were all contacted, who reacted with either complete disinterest or no idea of what rubber solar tubes were, even after careful explanation. Next solar pool companies, particularly those who in the preceding 20 years installed these rubber solar tubes – once again had absolutely no knowledge or interest into their eventual demise. So much for a greener environment in Penrith! ALAN AND GAIL NAGEL, LEONAY
What a waste!

Much to our great disappointment, on April 24, Penrith Council as part of our free four yearly clean up service will take away at least a skip full of rubber to go into land fill, and not to recycling. Having personally removed the 15-year-old rubber tubes that formed our roof solar
Yeah great let’s go down the path of Blue Mountains Council who have spent $135,000 and they have nothing to show for it (Crameri sin binned as debate takes off, Weekender March 31). Kevin needs to stop being a political opportunist. GRAHAM CHAPMAN, VIA FACEBOOK
Here we go again with another debate regarding the establishment of an Islamic school in Penrith (Debate looms on Islamic school, Weekender March 31). The protagonists are defending the school by saying that there was already a school on the site, all the buildings are still there and in a usable condition. No one is disputing the site’s previous use but question what will be taught there. Recent instances of students being ‘radicalised’ in certain schools in the public system are a real worry and one can only imagine what form this teaching will take in a purelyIslamic setting. KEITH EVERETT, WERRINGTON COUNTY

The public will be able to purchase hand-crafted jewellery, gifts, dinosaur and other fossils, crystals, gemstones, opals, books and lapidary supplies. There will be various demonstrations of gemstone cutting and faceting, jewellery making, jade and gems, turquoise, stone carving, enamelling, beads, and lots more.

New home for paramedics on track Penrith’s new ambulance superstation to defy weather delays and open by the end of the year EMILY NEWTON
t’s been one year since Penrith’s ambulance superstation was approved, and construction is well on track to be completed this year. The Penrith superstation located at 141 to 152 High Street had a lengthy proposal process following a few obstacles from the RMS due to the location of the station. Despite this, a Health Infrastructure spokesperson said that the construction of the new facility is running on time, even with the complicated weather this year. “Construction work is on track to be complete by late 2017,” the spokesperson said. “On completion of construction, the Penrith superstation will undergo a carefully managed commissioning and implementation process before becoming operational.” The superstation, known as the Penrith Paramedic Response Centre, will be the heart of the new Penrith Paramedic Response Network, where paramedics will go at the beginning and end of each shift. Branching off this centre will be smaller standby stations called Paramedic
I
Response Points, that will serve as locations from which paramedics can also respond from throughout their shift. It is a part of a State Government project that includes the construction of five new stations across Sydney. This new operating model will ensure NSW Ambulance paramedics are strategically placed to meet the emergency medical needs of metropolitan Sydney communities today and into the long-term future. “The Penrith superstation is a major investment in local ambulance services, designed to support the delivery of enhanced mobile emergency care to patients in the Penrith community and surrounding areas,” the spokesperson said. “The NSW Government’s $150 million Sydney Ambulance Metropolitan Infrastructure Strategy project marks the most significant single investment in NSW Ambulance infrastructure in the organisation’s history and is building capacity for the future.” The new facility will include parking for 22 ambulance vehicles; administration, office areas and amenities; on-site staff parking; a logistics and storage area; and an external wash bay.
Construction is well underway on the ambulance superstation on High Street, Penrith

I’m excited that Penrith is hosting the Australian Corporate Triathlon at the world-class International Regatta Centre on Sunday, April 23. This is the first time the event has been held outside of Sydney Harbour and I can think of no better place for this iconic race than Penrith – the Adventure Capital of NSW. Up to 2,000 participants will swim, ride and run their way to triathlon glory at the Olympic venue. The Regatta Centre is such a staple of our City that we often forget how special it is – purpose built for the 2000 Olympics and Paralympics, it is set at the foot of the spectacular Blue Mountains and boasts one of the best triathlon courses in the world. This is a once in a lifetime experience. It’s also a unique opportunity to meet industry counterparts, members of the local community and business owners, while enjoying all that Penrith has to offer. Each year the race teams up with a

charity partner, and this year teams will be raising money for Beyondblue and boosting awareness around the link between mental health, exercise and healthy working relationships. The race will include teams from Australia Post, NAB, Qantas, Surf Life Saving Australia, and Foxtel. Penrith Council has also entered five teams in the race, and will be competing fiercely to showcase the Penrith spirit. Being chosen as the venue for a major, national event, is another feather in the cap for Penrith. And it reaffirms our place as a top destination for adventure, unique experiences and world-class events. This will be a wonderful event for our community and I encourage you to come down to the Regatta Centre, cheer on the teams and enjoy the celebrations. Have a great weekend.

Selfless attitude and a desire to help others EMILY NEWTON
e is only in Year 7, but Mark Neilsen from Penrith Anglican College (PAC) is already being recognised as a community leader. Last month his outstanding community service for the Penrith area was acknowledged at the NSW/ACT Young Achievers Awards. Mark could not wipe the smile off his face after receiving the award. “It was a very surprising experience, I didn’t know I was going to get it at all,” he said. Mark has raised a remarkable about of money for various charities including the Leukaemia Foundation, Jump Rope for Heart, Run for Bibles, Penrith Anglican College Nepal Mission and Fiji Impact Trips, Cancer Council, the Fred Hollows Foundation and Westmead Children’s Hospital. One campaign he is exceptionally proud of was supporting Year 11 students in their annual Nepal trip, raising money, resources and awareness for the community, despite not going on the trip himself. He attributes his big heart to understanding how lucky he is to live in a supportive community in Australia.
H
“I always thought when I was little that we have so much over here in Australia, and they have so little,” Mark said. “They don’t have the opportunities that we get to have over here.” The youngest nominee at the award ceremony, Mark remained humble and said that he couldn’t have done the work without the support of others. “A lot of other compassionate kids have helped me,” he said. PAC Deputy Head of College Improvement and Welfare, Tony Banks, said Mark has a bright future ahead of him and congratulated him on the terrific achievement. “Community service is a big focus of the school, and as such it’s great to have students taking such a great attitude on board like Mark has,” Mr Banks said. “That’s something that the school would like to see expand exponentially.” Mr Banks said efforts like that of Mark only encourage others to contribute to the wider community. “We’re very proud of Mark and his achievements, and he is a great role model for other students,” Mr Banks said. With no plans to slow down, Mark is already designing his next campaign where he hopes to help local homeless people through winter.

In the lead-up to the long weekend, the Blood Service is on the hunt for more donors to keep blood fresh and flowing throughout the extra-long break. With blood donors in short supply before, during and after the holiday, people are being urged to roll up their sleeves between Thursday, April 13 and Monday, April 17. Blood Service spokesperson, Jemma Falkenmire, said the demand for blood was ongoing.

“Around Easter many regular blood donors are away, which means blood supplies can dip if we don’t have enough good eggs to fill the gap,” she said. “One blood product, platelets, only lasts for five days – not much longer than a hot cross bun – so we need a constant supply.” One in three people will need blood in their lifetime, yet currently only one in 30 donates. HAVE A CRACKING EASTER
Nathan wows the judges to take home public speaking prize EMILY NEWTON
ice Captain of Wollemi College in Werrington, Nathan Bartolo, has taken the top prize at the Catholic Schools Public Speaking competition. Last month over 700 competitors stretching from the Blue Mountains into Sydney city gathered to compete for the coveted prize. The school’s public speaking coach, Brett Wright, said Nathan’s ability to engage the audience is what set him apart from his competitors. “It’s a massive competition, it’s one of the biggest in the world,” he said. Nathan took first place in the senior division after speaking passionately and humorously. “His speech was probably the only one that they were genuinely really interested in over the eight minutes,” Mr Wright said. “We spoke with the adjudicators afterwards and it was unanimous, all three had him in first place. We’re both still flying high.” The success comes after Nathan took second place two years ago when he competed in Year 10. Mr Wright said the Werrington school, which currently has only 286 students, encourages the important life skill of public speaking.

Easter Sunday also marks the end of Lent, a 40 day fasting and spiritual discipline period in preparation for Easter.

ost of us don’t start a business because we love the financial side of things. There is usually a steep learning curve involved, and lessons are often learned the hard way when it comes to money. But if you want positive cash flow, you will need to take heed of the following tips to avoid the financial mistakes: Prompt payments When billing your clients, give them no more than 14 days to pay an invoice. Particularly if your product or service has already been delivered, there should be no reason an invoice cannot be paid within that time. And conversely, it is important that you always pay your bills on time. This ensures that your business relationships and credit rating are kept intact. Have an emergency fund While this can be tricky when you first start out, or when you are expanding, you need to cover yourself for the ‘unknowns’. This is aside from any risk management strategies relating to insurances. Sometimes this may be to tide you over
in an insurance claimable situation. Other times, it may be to cover the effects of a scenario that you could not foresee. Separate business finances from personal finances There are some micro business owners who manage to keep track of relevant transactions in a sole personal and business account. But this isn’t recommended. It is very difficult to track expenses and profit/loss, and tax time can be complicated. It also makes expansion difficult and leaves you far more liable for your business liabilities. Limit non-cash generating activities This is another tip that is hard to achieve when you are first starting out, as there will be many tasks you will need to do to establish your business, that may not generate any immediate income. While it is important to cultivate networks and add value to your product, you need to be aware that time is your most valuable asset. You need to learn to use it wisely.

ave you hired any employees since July 2015? If you have, you may be eligible for a NSW OSR grant of $2000 per full time employee (pro rata for casuals and part timers). We’ve covered this below, as well as other Government assistance that may be open to you. Government grants On www.business.gov.au/assistance you can freely access the grants currently available at a State and Federal Government level. ASIC have issued warnings about similar services charging a fee, so please be careful. When looking through the assistance available, I suggest filtering by NSW, but otherwise look through all the grants to avoid missing any that may apply. Small Business Grant This grant is the one most available to small businesses. It is a NSW OSR grant of $2000 for a full-time employee, pro rata for part-time or casual employees after the position has been filled for a year. Your staffing level must remain higher than the year before.
Currently OSR are waiving the 60 day registration period, so you can claim if you have hired any employees since July 2015. This includes yourself if you started from day one as a company. We can help navigate your eligibility for this grant at the Centre. “The $20,000 thing Most confusion is about the “$20,000 thing. You do not get a refund on assets purchased, but rather accelerated/ simplified depreciation. This means you claim the full cost of each asset purchased under $20,000 in the tax year, rather than depreciating the cost over time. This expires June 30, 2017. Training – online and face to face Government agencies such as Fair Work and ATO offer online training courses in key subjects. Under programmes like Business Connect you can attend workshops for a subsidised price or receive face to face business advice (recently increased to four hours at no cost!). Fair Trading also offer regular workshops, some with attached CPD points.

For all its rambling charm, a cottage garden involves thoughtful planning. Forget straight lines and perfect geometric shapes and instead embrace relaxed, gentle curves. PANTHER RUMBLINGS
with the Masked Panther
SAM SIDELINED » After initially hoping he would return
to the field this year, prop Sam McKendry is now resigned to spending another full season on the sidelines. The former New Zealand international suffered an ACL injury in Penrith’s final pre-season trial against Parramatta earlier this year, but it was hoped that the club would be able to rehabilitate the injury and McKendry would return to the field sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, that’s not the case with Panthers coach Anthony Griffin confirming that McKendry has undergone surgery and will now begin the long journey of recovery once again.
» You really have to question what was
going through the heads of Matt Moylan, Waqa Blake and Peta Hiku when they ventured out onto the streets of Melbourne last Saturday night despite being told not to leave the team hotel. There is no question that the spotlight is firmly being placed on Moylan, who as captain of the club should have known better. The 25-year-old doesn’t mind late nights after a game – he was out late enough to see the sun come up after the loss to the Roosters last month. Moylan is smart enough not to get himself in any trouble off the field but really needs to start leading by example.
» Penrith’s round 22 clash with the Wests
Tigers at Pepper Stadium has had some serious spice added to it after Ivan Cleary was officially confirmed as the new Wests Tigers coach on Monday. The late-season match-up will see Cleary coach against his son Nathan for the first time, a contest both senior and junior Clearys have described as “awkward”. For the record, Nathan has a long-term contract with Penrith and any speculation that father and son may one day unite at the same club is way off the mark and exceptionally presumptuous.
» One player who may be a chance of
linking up with Cleary at the Tigers is Dean Whare. The 27-year-old is off contract at the end of the season and I’m told
that it’s unlikely the Panthers will offer him a new deal, especially with concerns over where the salary cap will sit for the 2018 season.
» The Panthers won’t be entering the race for Cooper Cronk’s signature. It’s that simple – enough said.
» The Weekender prefers to have its
reporters sit in the stands at games to soak up the atmosphere and feel what the fans feel, which is a bonus considering The Masked Panther has been banned from media boxes across the country after an unfortunate squabble over a party pie with The Mole a few years back (who’s having the last laugh now though?). Anyway, one thing I did pick up from the grandstand at AAMI Park last week was that Leilani Latu was the only Panthers player who went over to thank the Penrith fans who had made the trek to AAMI Park. It was a tough night for all of the players but Latu deserves credit for taking some time out to thank those who the team wouldn’t exist without.
» Congratulations to Panthers legends
Ryan Girdler and Carl MacNamara, who were both awarded honorary life memberships by Panthers Chairman Dave O’Neill last week.
» As hinted at last week, youngster Zach Dockar-Clay has left the Penrith system and linked up with Hull KR in England. The former Junior Kiwis captain has signed a deal until the end of the 2018 season, and has already moved over to the UK as he prepares to begin training with the club.
Sam McKendry
» Injured players Josh Mansour and
Bryce Cartwright both made the trip to AAMI Park last weekend. The duo spent some time exploring Melbourne before supporting their team mates on Saturday evening. Mansour is looking good and it appears he’s on track to return in round 13 or 14, adding some grunt to Penrith’s backline.
» Talking of Cartwright, the NRL quietly
investigated the ‘Miss X’ drama and has cleared the young star as well as the Panthers of any wrongdoing.
» It was a bit of a flashback to the old days on Tuesday when the Panthers
trained at Pepper Stadium instead of the Rugby League Academy, which was undergoing some field maintenance. The team is bunkering down for a three-week stretch without travelling, with two home games and a match at ANZ Stadium making up the short term schedule.

T
wo things have to happen for the Melbourne Storm to lose at AAMI Park. First, the Storm have to be off their game, even just a little. Second, the opposition needs to bring their best possible performance. Neither of those things happened last Saturday night, with the Storm producing a magnificent effort against a Penrith side that showed they still have plenty to learn if they want to match it with the heavyweights of the competition. Melbourne are a pleasure to watch, especially now that the wrestling tactics they used to employ have been removed
from their game. They turn up in defence time and time again, always one step ahead of the opposition. They are patient – excruciatingly patient – and they have an incredible ability to make the opposition panic. They are a class football team and without doubt the benchmark of the 2017 competition. The Panthers shouldn’t feel too much shame in losing to such a dominant outfit but there are some question marks around Anthony Griffin’s team that his troops need to address in the next few weeks, to prove that they are indeed a competitor for this year’s title. It is concerning that against the better sides, the Panthers struggle to score points. Not only did they cross for just one try against the Storm, but against the Roosters a few weeks ago, they also only scored one four-pointer. The better sides seem to be able to read Penrith’s
attack and shut down Matt Moylan, who is crucial to creating Penrith’s try-scoring opportunities. Of course, all of that is somewhat of a moot point this week given the dramatic changes that have occurred to Penrith’s side for tonight’s game. With Moylan, Waqa Blake and Peta Hiku all missing for disciplinary reasons and Tyrone Peachey suffering a rib injury, the Penrith side that took to the field against the Storm will be vastly different to the one that runs out against Souths. There is no doubt that with those four players missing, Penrith’s backline looks far less potent and the game is now very evenly poised. It should also be pointed out that the Panthers have had very little opportunity to train this week. Battered and bruised after the Storm game and with travel thrown in as part of a shortish turnaround,

there’s been limited opportunities for this new-look side to get together. The Rabbitohs found themselves in a similar position to Penrith last weekend. They weren’t necessarily embarrassed by the Cowboys but they weren’t really ever in the game either. They showed glimpses of solid attack and put in a pretty solid defensive effort, but they were a class below Jonathan Thurston’s men. The key man for Souths last week was Sam Burgess, who ran for 158 metres during his 76 minutes on the field. He is very much leading the forward pack at the moment and will be the key for Souths again against Penrith. I still believe Penrith can win this game even with the number of players they have missing, but if the Rabbitohs come out swinging early, I can’t see the Panthers successfully playing catch-up. BIG WEEK FOR DWZ NATHAN TAYLOR @natetaylor87
P
enrith winger Dallin WateneZelezniak has revealed he fended off a number of rival clubs to remain with the Panthers on a long-term deal. On Monday, the club announced the 21-year-old flyer signed a new contract that will keep him at the Panthers until the end of the 2020 season. It’s been a huge week for WateneZelezniak, who learned on Tuesday that he’d be playing alongside his brother Malakai for the first time in the top grade. Anthony Griffin’s decision to drop three players for disciplinary reasons and an injury to Tyrone Peachey has opened the door for the Watene-Zelezniak brothers to feature together in Penrith’s backline against Souths tonight.
Speaking with Extra Time, WateneZelezniak said the Panthers club has been his home since he was 12-years-old and he’s thrilled to sign a new deal – the longest of his career. “There are always some other options out there but I call this place home. The club has been good to me and I’m happy here,” he said. “I’m a real family man and my family all live in Penrith. To have the support of my family and wife, that came into consideration too.” Last week it was revealed that WateneZelezniak and his wife, Purdy, would be welcoming their first child into the world later this year. The soon-to-be new dad said securing a long-term deal was best for his growing family’s future. “I think I’m growing up and I wanted to know where I was going to be for a few years, so I can start a life and plan for the future,” he said.
Dallin Watene-Zelezniak has re-signed with Penrith. Photo: Melinda Jane The St Clair Comets junior said the opportunity to play his much preferred position of fullback at another NRL club did cross his mind during recent contract negotiations. “Yes it did, but teams can change every
week and you can end up anywhere. I’ve just got to be ready for any position that comes my way down the track,” he said. “I have got these next three years to work on not just the wing position but centre and fullback if I have to.”

Players are learning that there’s more to life than footy
Jamie Soward
O
n the back of Cooper Cronk’s huge decision this week to leave the Melbourne Storm at the end of the year and move to Sydney, I can’t help but feel that life away from football is getting more and more important to NRL players. When I retired at the end of last year, people constantly came up to me and said “you’re only 32, you can still keep playing”. But that wasn’t it; it was me wanting to begin the next journey of my life. I had devoted my whole life to rugby league, getting the best possible results and so much out of my body for so long. I never saw myself not playing footy but, once I met my fiancé Maddy (pictured), I saw myself having a life outside of the game and that made my decision to retire so much easier. You can see when Cooper talks about his fiancé Tara, that the women and families behind the game don’t always get the recognition for what they go through as well. Maddy made a massive impact on my life.
I didn’t retire because of her but I retired because I wanted to begin my next life challenge. I think I’d given the game enough over my career, and it seems Cooper feels the same way also. During Tuesday’s press conference, Cooper spoke about having a family one day, and that’s what I want too. I want to be able to walk around with my kids and play with them, but some people don’t understand that. People think you should continue playing forever and can’t understand why you’d leave all that money on the table. Well, after having three back operations in the space of six months, I can tell you there’s more to life than footy. Sometimes, as fans, we don’t realise the ups and downs athletes go through and the toll it takes on their families. As athletes, we are selfish in the way that we need the attention to be on us 24/7. I’ve found that this year I’ve been able to give myself a whole lot more to my family and to Maddy. I’ve certainly got more out of myself mentally than physically this year. Cooper has met the right person for him
and I definitely met my partner at the right time, to be able to make that decision. As for what Cooper does next? Well I think retiring isn’t out of the question.

fter missing the last three weeks with a busted eye socket, Panthers secondrower James Fisher-Harris is desperate to get back on the field. The 21-year-old Kiwi international couldn’t see out of his left eye for a few days after a collision against the Sydney Roosters back in Round 3. Fortunately, Fisher-Harris didn’t require surgery and is itching to get back on the paddock, despite not being named in Penrith’s team to play South Sydney tonight at Pepper Stadium. Speaking with the media on Tuesday, Fisher-Harris said he dealt with a number of symptoms following the knock. “My eye was closed for two days, so I couldn’t really see. My jaw was also sore but everything is 100 per cent now,” he said. “I was pretty angry after doing it but you can’t do anything about it. You just have to
rest because you can’t rush those things especially when it involves your eye.” It may only be six rounds in but Penrith are already dealing with a number of injuries in the forwards to start the season. With Bryce Cartwright and now Tyrone Peachey on the sidelines, Fisher-Harris said it was tough to watch his side up against the Storm pack last Saturday. “Melbourne are a good team and our boys threw nearly everything at them. It just comes down to our defence,” he said. “I wanted to be out there last weekend but the boys did good. I just think it’s important we get our act together at this time of the season.” Before his injury, Fisher-Harris was starting to show fans what got him selected in New Zealand’s Four Nations team last summer. While Fisher-Harris didn’t get too much game time over in the UK, he did learn plenty from the experience. “I took heaps out of it, I learned how to be more professional after being around all those high quality players and learning new stuff off them,” he said. Fisher-Harris is hopeful of returning against Cronulla next week.

Cronk delivers a lesson in how to handle the media
troy dodds
F
orget media training, just get players to watch Cooper Cronk’s press conference on Monday once a week until they get the message. The bloke is all class. With a slight crack in his voice but knowing what he was doing was right, Cronk announced he was leaving the Melbourne Storm after 14 seasons and planned to move to Sydney. This may not have been crisis management, but it was a lesson in how to handle the media and yourself. Cronk was happy to sit there for as long as the media wanted him. There was no media manager in the background shouting ‘last question’. No rules about what could and couldn’t be asked. Journalists had no digging to do after the press conference because Cronk had laid everything bare. The champion halfback also acknowledged that he was going to be the subject of plenty of speculation over the next few months as the race to win his signature in Sydney intensifies. But rather than say he wanted to concentrate only on Melbourne, Cronk took a
different approach. He told the journalists that he accepted there would be speculation surrounding him and that he was comfortable with that. He hinted that as the next few months unfold, there won’t be a ban on asking him about contract negotiations or his playing future. He will be an open book. In the space of about 20 minutes Cronk delivered every player and every club a lesson in how to handle a media storm – good or bad. He showed that not everything has to be about carefully planned media events, where players are put on tight leashes, too afraid to say anything that might be taken out of context. There was no prepared statement in sight. I admit, as a rugby league fan I am jealous of the Melbourne Storm. I’m jealous of the big three. Not just because of what they can do on the football field (which is incredible in its own right) but because each of them hold the class and morals of their club so highly in every word they speak. They constantly make themselves available, are well spoken, and have the game’s interests at heart. They know what the
game has given to them. They accept that the media, and they’ve experienced both the good and bad of it, is part of the rugby league landscape.
Cooper Cronk, take a bow. You’ve been a champion player for the Storm but based on your press conference on Monday morning, you’re a champion bloke as well.

Ben has embraced the saying “Not just me, not all the time, not that bad” as a way of putting problems into perspective.

daring robbery
NRL STORM 28 PANTHERS 6
How the Telegraph covered the story
I
t is the intriguing sub-plot to the 1991 Grand Final that the hands of time have confined to the history books – but it remains one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in the history of the Panthers. A day after Penrith’s 19-12 win over Canberra in the season decider, the party was still going at Panthers Leagues Club when an incredible, almost impossible to believe story took place. Three armed bandits staged a daring $360,000 raid at the Leagues Club and in dramatic scenes, shots were fired and witnesses, including a pregnant woman and her child, had to scramble for cover. The incident happened just before 11am on Monday, September 23, 1991. As the Telegraph reported: “Panthers spokesperson Carl Leddy said Armaguard had officially taken possession of the cash having collected it from the club’s management and exchang-
ing it for a covering cheque. Minutes later three armed and masked thieves swooped on the two guards and escaped with the cash in what police said was an extremely well planned and executed raid”. The three male bandits used four vehicles during the robbery. They had posed as caterers to gain access to the perfect location to pull off the robbery. Despite getting away with the $360,000, it could have been a much bigger hit, as the bandits left behind around $700,000 – takings from the Grand Final victory party. Witness Carol Barber described the drama to the Telegraph at the time. “As soon as I heard the bang I grabbed my daughter and ducked,” she said. “All I could think of was her and I hid the both of us behind a nearby car.” Penrith Police Sergeant, Mick O’Connor, said it was a well-planned
robbery designed to secure a significant loot. “The crooks obviously put a lot of thought and planning into the attack,” he said. “The fact they used four cars, including a back-up one in case the getaway vehicle broke down, proves that.” Police also said the crooks had extensive knowledge of the layout of the club, and knew exactly where they had to be to pull off the robbery. Quite incredibly, despite a huge police operation in the immediate aftermath of the robbery and around 40 witnesses watching the heist unfold, the 1991 raid on Panthers Leagues Club remains unsolved. After all these years, it would seem that those involved have gotten away with one of the most high profile, daring robberies you could imagine. At least they didn’t get their hands on the premiership trophy!

ENTERTAINMENT PENRITH’S BIGGEST AND BEST LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
Split personalities
K KATE REID
evin Mitchell’s music career has been a tale of two very distinct personalities. In the 90s he made a name for himself as frontman for rock band Jebediah. But in the 2000s Kevin decided to indulge his need for something new and with acoustic guitar in hand, Bob Evans was born. Under the pseudonym, Kevin found
the musical freedom he needed to create beautiful folk-inspired tracks that never would have made it onto a Jebediah set list. Almost two decades later and his musical alter ego has well and truly taken over. “With Bob Evans I’m able to completely indulge my own personal interests and loves,” Kevin explained. “To a certain extent I will probably always be recognised as the guy from Jebediah, but Bob Evans is where 90 per cent of my musical creativity goes these days.” Kevin/Bob will be bringing that creative energy to Katoomba next month as part of his Lonesome Highways Tour.
The successful singer/songwriter will be accompanied on his tour by all-female support acts, a tradition that started almost five years ago. “I don’t want my shows to be ‘sausage’ parties, I don’t want the person going on before me to just be another f**king dude playing guitar,” he laughed before launching into a discussion about feminism and being an effective ally. “It’s just really important to me that there’s gender balance on the stage, for me and for the audience as well,” he said. “It’s only a very small thing but I feel like it’s one small thing that I can do to help promote female voices because I don’t think they’re being heard enough.”

With record sales and streaming service revenue making up a minuscule part of the income of local artists, it’s these tours that help keep musicians like Kevin afloat. “If you want to support me as an artist buy a ticket to my show and buy a piece of merchandise,” he said. As for whether Jebediah fans will get their ears on new music anytime soon, Kevin is clear that for now he only has eyes for one man. “At the moment it’s all Bob,” he said. Bob Evans will perform at Clarendon Guesthouse in Katoomba on Wednesday, May 3 at 6pm. Tickets are $27.50. For tickets, visit www.bobevans.com.au.

t may have been published in 1899, but the themes in Ethel Pedley’s children’s tale ‘Dot and the Kangaroo’ are still as relevant as ever. This school holidays the stage production ‘Creature’ will recreate this classic story that provides a glimpse into humanity’s relationship with the natural environment. Audiences will be captivated as acrobats, stilt walkers, aerialists and breathtaking 3D technology comes together to bring the Australian bush to life on stage. Follow along as Dot, lost in the outback and rescued by a kangaroo, is given
berries that allow her to talk to the animals. Through her journey Dot comes to understand the negative impact humans are having on the animal’s habitat. Engaging, enchanting and enlightening, this is a school holiday activity not to be missed. ‘Creature’ will be on at The Joan on Wednesday, April 12 at 10am, 12.30pm and 6pm and Thursday, April 13 at 10am, 12.30pm and 3pm. With communication planet Mercury now moving backwards through your sign, you’ll have to be careful how you give and receive information. If in doubt, don’t hesitate to double-check. Plus avoid starting major ventures or signing important contracts until after May 3. Instead, be patient and focus your attention on revising, researching or reworking current projects.
VIRGO
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
Boredom is a big no-no at the moment for active and vibrant Virgos, so make sure adventure and excitement feature in your plans for the week. Tuesday’s Full Moon stimulates your friendship zones, so those around you can look forward to some surprises, amusing antics or manic moments from you and your merry band of mates. But keep in mind that Mercury is now in retrograde motion until May 3. So make sure you back-up all your files; allow plenty of time to get to appointments; and double-check everything as you carefully revise, reschedule and re-do.
LIBRA
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
A loved one, close friend, business partner or professional rival could stun you by making a surprise move. So make sure you’re prepared with a few fast moves of your own! Is your love life stuck on auto-pilot? Uranus encourages you to blast away the cobwebs and look at things from a fresh angle. Singles – are you fed up with dating disasters? The planets urge you to look for love and passion in unlikely places.
CANCER
JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
Looking after loved ones isn’t easy at the moment, as you struggle to juggle your personal and professional lives. Tuesday’s Full Moon falls in your home zone, so be on domestic drama alert and realise that stress levels will be running high – and self-control running low. Plus pursuing your dreams won’t be a direct journey. Plenty of patience/persistence are required before you taste success.
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
Some stubborn Scorpios can too easily get stuck in a stultifying daily regime. This week it’s time to ricochet out of your usual routine and do something completely different. Variety is the spice of life, as you experiment with exciting new activities – and welcome sudden detours and disruptions. But the more you try to control others, the more they are likely to resist.
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
This week’s fiery Full Moon stars are fabulous for romance, friendships, hobbies, sport, entertainment, creative endeavours and group projects. With your sparky Sagittarian mojo and momentum running on high speed, you’re ready to rock and roll! But Mercury and Venus are both retrograde for most of the week. So you need to take your foot out of your mouth and communicate with more care and consideration, especially at home.
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
When it comes to your domestic life, a dash of disruption may be just what the doctor ordered! So it’s a good week to shake things up on the home front as you redesign, redecorate, renovate or entertain unexpected guests. But with Mercury retrograde, be very clear when you’re communicating with family and friends. What they say and what you hear may be two different things.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
This week’s electric planetary aspects help you communicate your innovative ideas with extra pizazz, as you connect with like-minded people via joint ventures with influential and/or international contacts. And make sure you leverage the power of social media to get your message out in exciting and inventive ways. But remember there’s a fine line between being rebellious and just plain reckless.
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
Are you going on a holiday or business trip? With Mercury reversing through your travel zone, expect some chaos and confusion. So double-check your itinerary and make allowances for delays, cancellations and other last minute changes. You also need to look at your financial situation with a fresh set of eyes. You can’t fix entrenched problems with old solutions!

Is a Self Managed Super Fund the right idea for you? Taking an interest in your superannuation is very important, but could managing your own funds for retirement be a good idea for you?

It will be very hard for you to say no after looking into her beautiful eyes. At 10 years old she has found herself at the shelter with no owner in sight and will be ready to go to a new home.
In recent times, Self Managed Super Funds (SMSF) have become very popular and, for many investors, they represent an excellent vehicle to manage their retirement assets. It is my belief that for many Australians who have an SMSF, it is not the most appropriate structure. Truth be known, often the person recommending the fund benefits greatly. As a financial planner, an SMSF client is gold as they are generally high revenue clients. The same applies for accountants and those involved with property investment, we are all incentivised to recommend an SMSF. Is this best for the client? Often the answer is ‘yes’, it is a great option, however, in a lot of other situations, I’m less confident that an SMSF is appropriate. If you are considering setting up an SMSF, the first thing you should do is read the ATO guide, “Setting up a Self Managed Super Fund”. The ATO lists four primary considerations: 1. Consider whether you have the time,

knowledge and skill to manage your own super fund, as well as having the assets and money to make the fund viable. 2. Compare the costs and benefits of running an SMSF with other retirement saving options. 3. Make sure you are setting up the fund solely to pay retirement benefits to the members or the members’ dependants in the event of a member’s passing. 4. Check you understand what is involved in managing your own fund and what it means to be a trustee. These considerations highlight a few key points for me. Firstly, not everyone has the knowledge and skill (or inclination) to run an SMSF. Although you are expected to seek professional advice, the responsibility and accountability can’t be transferred and the buck ultimately stops with the trustee. Having sufficient assets to make the fund viable is also very important. My licensee won’t even let us contemplate an SMSF with anything less than $200,000. This is a minimum, and in some cases may not even be sufficient. The second consideration involves comparing costs and benefits. It should be noted that it is not cheap to establish an SMSF, the ATO provide an establishment estimate of $7,000. In addition, financial planning fees are usually higher for SMSF

clients and you will also incur accounting fees. This is on top of all fees associated with the investments within the SMSF. If you’re planning on investing in traditional super assets such as term deposits, managed funds and direct shares, the cost/benefit can be easily assessed. If you’re choosing to invest in other assets that can’t be accessed through a superannuation platform, most commonly direct property, then it is more difficult to compare. Self Managed Super Funds can be a terrific option, but are not one-size-fitsall and you should seek advice.

Winter can be a difficult time for people with Diabetes...
Amy Meekings Podiatrist OnePointHealth 4732 5188 onepointhealth.com.au
Foot care for individuals with Diabetes is important at all times, however with the cooler weather approaching us, a change in our routine is imminent and can pose a risk to our foot health. Diabetic affected feet can present with altered sensation and a reduction in blood circulation. As a result, cuts, wounds, blisters, and other foot lesions, may not be causing any pain and you may inaccurately determine hot-cold temperatures. Additionally, a reduction in blood flow can delay healing. When poorly managed, infection may develop and the risk of ulcerations rise with the potential to lead to amputations. Prevention of Diabetic foot related complications is always the best management and here are a few ways to help your feet survive the winter months. Check your feet daily Since neural sensation is altered, it is important to check your feet by looking at them and feeling for any changes. If you find it difficult to see the bottom, a mirror can be helpful or ask a relative to assist. Keep your feet dry Dry thoroughly between your toes and avoid leaving shoes outside in the winter
frost where they can become damp. Moisture between the toes is a perfect environment for fungal infections to develop. Excessive heat can dehydrate the skin and can cause burns to occur. Avoid sitting directly in front of a heat source such as heaters, car foot heater and open fireplaces. Also monitor water temperatures when bathing. Instead use socks and slippers to keep your feet warm. Soaking your feet in excessively warm or hot water also reduces skin moisture and can cause macerated skin. Minimise soaking to luke warm water and always apply a moisturiser after.
Apply an emollient every day to restore foot moisture all over the feet avoiding the spaces in between the toes. Keep your nails well-trimmed Long, irregular nails, especially in enclosed footwear, can cause trauma to the surrounding skin. It is always best to have your nails managed by a Podiatrist if you have Diabetes. Podiatrists are trained to perform neurovascular assessments to assess your risk of Diabetic foot related complications and can appropriately determine a management plan specific for your needs and situation.

How to tackle digestive issues or annoying food intolerances Too often we put up with digestive problems without going through the proper channels to find out what’s going on...
Kate Reid Nutritionist kate.reid@ westernweekender.com.au @kate_reid6
Food can help keep our bodies healthy, but it can also cause some pretty nasty symptoms in those with food intolerances or digestive issues. So what’s the best plan of attack when food is no longer your friend? Don’t self diagnose If you think you may be suffering from a food intolerance or digestive issue it’s important to start with a visit to your GP. Many symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhoea can be caused by more serious medical issues, so it’s important to rule those out first. Your GP can also refer you for tests to check for conditions like coeliac disease, chron’s disease and colitis. Keep a food and symptom diary It’s hard to keep track of everything you eat and how you feel throughout the day so consider keeping a diary. Making note of everything you eat and any symptoms you experience can help to identify which foods may be contributing to your symptoms. Speak to a dietitian While it’s tempting to Google nutri-

FODMAP foods are avoided, followed by a reintroduction phase where foods are added back to the diet one by one to identify which foods can be tolerated and at what quantities. The diet is quite complex as FODMAPs are present in a range of different foods across many of the food groups, so it’s important to follow the diet under the guidance of a dietitian. And when recently offered a sip of a just-released 2015 from Apple Tree Flat in the NSW Central Ranges, we told ourselves that here was yet another reason for our love of the variety… although we did have one query: how come one of such elegance and complexity could be sitting on our local liquor store shelves at just $13? So we put our query to the 2015’s winemaker Peter Logan, who confessed his own love of the variety, and added: “When handled with respect and allowed to show its true elegance, this one’s proof as to just what can be achieved at any price point.” Peter also spoke of the 2015 vintage that he described as a joy in his NSW Central Ranges, the region enjoying a sunny and dry spring and summer, and mild temperatures throughout both seasons. And all of which, he says, then continued into autumn, ensuring a harvest of richly flavoured grapes with good texture and varietal character, and thus this ultimately lovely chardonnay with its flavours of pear, lemon and nectarine before a long clean finish. A really great drop with seafood party platters or a dinner of grilled salmon. One to note: T’gallant that was founded amid the rolling hills of Main Ridge on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula in 1990, has a nice range of bubblies pitched at the growing market for quality sparklings priced around $15 to $20 (pictured).

New hair, new you: Time to freshen up your style If you want a new look, why not start with your hair? A new style and a new colour awaits...
Alyce Madden Westfield Penrith Follow me on Instagram @styled.by.alyce
Looking for the latest pick-me-up might be as simple as freshening up your hair colour with the latest looks leaving you spoilt for choice! For a dramatic change to your flat locks look no further than the biggest trend right now ‘Goede Hair’. Just like the shimmering gemstone itself, this look is all about adding magic with reflective amethyst and icy moonstone blue shining throughout your hair! Completely different to the fairy floss rainbow hair of last year, this is all about mimicking the inside of an iridescent crystal. Have your hair stylist start from the bottom and work their way up your head, focusing on lightening the length of your hair leaving your roots your natural colour, concentrating on piecing the purple through your mid lengths then melting blue colour on ends, combing inbetween to ensure a flawless blend! Style hair once completely dry in soft tousled waves. The next look’s definitely one for the brave! Move over platinum blonde hair, it’s
time to embrace nature taking its course, it’s all about grey hair! Or as we like to call it, silver! Requiring a lot of maintenance but still being simple to achieve, have your hair bleached to the lightest blonde instead of having those greys covered.
Make sure you tone out all yellow and brassiness leaving no trace of blonde. Go in with a purple shampoo toner every couple of washes to keep your cool toned look perfection. I love De Lorenzo Nova Fusion Silver shampoo, a strong violet coloured treatment and shampoo in one from Hairhouse Warehouse at Westfield Penrith. If going grey is too much commitment for right now, opt for striking ashen brown hair. Amplifying a tan or simply suiting cooler skin tones, pretty ash brown shades create dimension throughout your strands with flecks of blue or grey. The next hair trend might be as easy as reaching for the Ghd especially if you already have some length to work with! ‘Cher Hair’, sleek and classy, the ultimate in gloriously glossy, waist length locks is currently having a moment. When Kim Kardashian came back into the spotlight from her hiatus she sported the long silky locks sparking the trend amongst other celebrities, Nicki Minaj one upping the star by taking Cher hair to another level and wearing dark, pin straight, floor sweeping hair! For celebrities they often trick us into thinking they’ve gone for a massive colour change or chop but more realistically they’ve just got an amazing hairstylist with some great wigs to hook them up with!

Dogs must avoid chocolate treats this Easter holiday
pets
Easter time usually means there’s plenty of chocolate around the house, which is great for us humans but very dangerous for our furry friends...
Nicole McMillan Practice owner of Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic and the Western Sydney Cat Hospital
Chocolate is dangerous to pets, particularly at Easter time when we often have so much more of it in the house. It is one of the more common causes of poisoning in dogs. The toxic components within chocolate are theobromine and caffeine, these are called methylxanthines. All animals are susceptible to the effects of methyxanthines. Luckily for humans this dose is so high you would have to eat a huge amount of chocolate or drink a large amount of coffee to be affected. Unfortunately for our pets the dose is very low. The toxicity of chocolate depends on the type. The higher the chocolate solids the more toxic it is. From most to least toxic are cocoa powder, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, chocolate flavoured products and white chocolate. A small amount of chocolate can be deadly. If your dog eats any amount of chocolate, it is important to immediately contact your veterinarian for advice. It can be determined if a toxic dose has been ingested by knowing the pet’s weight, the
type of chocolate and the amount eaten. This information will also help predict what clinical signs can be expected and what treatment is required. The symptoms of toxicity depend on the amount of chocolate eaten. The higher the dose the more signs are seen. They generally start with vomiting, diarrhoea, progress to increased heart rate and heart arrhythmias. In severe cases, affected animals can even seizure and die. There is no antidote available so treatment is generally supportive. If the ingestion was within the previous few hours then medications can be used to induce vomiting. This may reduce the amount of toxin absorbed but may not prevent clinical signs. Medications such as activated charcoal can be given orally to bind up any left over toxin. Animals that are already showing symptoms are also usually placed on intravenous fluids to help flush the toxin from their body. Gastric protectants are often required. If heart abnormalities are noted specific medications to stabilise the heart are required. If seizures occur anti-seizure medications are given to control them until the body clears the toxin. The toxins within chocolate can take days to be fully metabolized by the body.
The high fat content of most chocolate products can also trigger a metabolic disease called pancreatitis in dogs. This is a potentially life threatening disease. The pancreas becomes inflamed causing inappetence, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and dehydration. It requires intensive therapy with dogs often requiring days in hospital on intravenous fluids and injectable medications to control their pain and nausea. We hope you all have a wonderful Easter. Please take care with chocolate around the home and ensure your pets do not have access to it. Remember as with m o s t things prevention is f a r better than cure.

What does the cross mean to you, and what sort of impact does it have on your life?
Rev John Lavender www.glenmorepark anglican.com.au and on Facebook
Most of us know what the big yellow ‘M’ stands for when we see it as we drive along the road. Researchers involved in advertising reckon that children as young as two, recognise the ‘M’ immediately, knowing it stands for Happy Meals and Ronald McDonald! The cross is another symbol recognised around the world. Easter is the time when we especially remember Jesus’ death on the cross. But what are we remembering? When you look at the cross on which Jesus died, what do you see? For many, a cross is simply a piece of jewellery. For others, it is a symbol to identify a church. Still for others, a cross is used to mark a grave: a powerful yet sad reminder of death. What about you? What do you see when you see the cross? The message about the cross on which Jesus died has a central place in the Bible. The Apostle Paul, speaking about the cross, wrote to the Christians in the ancient Greek city of Corinth, “What I
received, I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins”. This simple yet enormously significant statement tells us what Good Friday and the cross on which Jesus died is about. On the cross, Jesus willingly gave up his life in our place. On the cross, Jesus was separated from

God so that we do not need to be eternally separated from God. Jesus’ death is the means by which any person can have your sin forgiven once and for all time when you turn to him. What a wonderful thing! No wonder we call it “Good Friday”! As Easter approaches, let it be a ‘Good Friday’ for you as well!

A MESSAGE FROM GEORGE RABIE George and Cathey Rabie would like to thank the Penrith community for its support over the last 40 years. We’re sad to see our store close, but looking forward to the next chapter in our lives. We have been in the business world for over 40 years, having begun the electrical retail business on September 29, 1974. When I moved into this store here, I recall the emptiness. I remember this shell that we made and developed into a real store that was buzzing and vibrant. Now we are dismantling it and breaking it down, it does make you sad. Penrith has been great to us. Thank you to everyone who has supported us.

The personification of style, and a red carpet favourite, Anasta will be driving the top-of-the-range Next-Gen Mazda CX-5 Akera. “It is absolutely amazing, and I’m very excited to be a part of the Mazda family,” Anasta said. “Mazda makes beautifully designed cars that are lovely to drive. “As a parent, safety is also critically important to me, and Mazda includes all of the latest safety technology to ensure we are safe on the road. “I also love how much Mazda does in the community, particularly when it comes to the arts, which is obviously close to my heart. “I’m very much looking forward to working with the Mazda team.” As a member of Mazda’s small but committed group of brand ambassadors, Anasta will maintain the Mazda conversation in lifestyle and social circles – an important focus for Mazda in its marketing push throughout Australia.

ome of the best senior golfing talent from around the state will converge on western Sydney next week for the NSW Veteran Golfers Association Strokeplay Championship. Three rounds of the prestigious tournament will be held at various courses across western Sydney including Richmond Golf Club, Glenmore Heritage Valley in Mulgoa and Stonecutters Ridge. Speaking with the Weekender, Tournament Director Les Knox said the Western Sydney Region Veterans Golfers Association were proud to be hosting the event for the fourth straight year. “The Strokeplay Championship caters to male golfers over 55 years and of all abilities,” he said. “It’s been recognised as the most important event for veteran golfers and is even endorsed by Golf NSW as one their Senior Order of Merit events.” More than 135 golfers of all abilities are expected to take part in the Championships, which take place at three courses from this Monday, April 10 until Wednesday, April 12. “This event attracts players from all over the state as well as plenty of local golfing talent,” Knox said. “The youngest competitor this year is 56 and we’ve got two elderly gentlemen competing – one is 82-years-old and the other 84.” Last year’s champion Denis Dale from Twin Creeks will be back to defend his title along with previous winners Col Kenning from Kiama and Greg Kent from Charlestown. “Those three will be favourites again this year,” Knox said. Round 1 of the tournament begins this Monday morning at Richmond Golf Club, with the beautiful Glenmore Heritage Valley in Mulgoa hosting Round 2 on Tuesday. The final and deciding round will be contested on Wednesday at Stonecutters Ridge, followed by a presentation. Knox said spectators are welcome to attend and enjoy all the action.

Triathlon
Off with the suits, on with the swimmers Thousands to compete in Australian Corporate Triathlon Series at Sydney International Regatta Centre NATHAN TAYLOR
he Australian Corporate Triathlon Series, which hits Penrith for the first time later this month, will raise money for Beyondblue and support people and families affected by depression, anxiety and suicide. Teams will swim, ride and run their way to triathlon glory while raising money and boosting awareness around the link between mental health, exercise and healthy working relationships. Up to 2000 participants will compete at the Sydney International Regatta Centre when competition gets underway on Sunday, April 23. Competitors will meet fellow industry counterparts as well as members of the local community and business owners. Australian Corporate Triathlon and Beyondblue Ambassador, Libby Trickett, hopes the event encourages people to take up exercise, not just for their physical health but for their mental wellbeing as well. “We’re all so busy with work and family commitments these days and exercising is a great way to wind down and take some time out, just for yourself,” she said.
T
Fun, serious competition and a good cause all combine at the Australian Corporate Triathlon Series “Depression and anxiety can be treated and it doesn’t have to hold you back. “If you’re having a tough time, the important thing is to talk to someone – it could be your partner, a trusted friend or GP – and get support that’s right for you.” Penrith Mayor John Thain said there was no better place to hold the upcoming
Australian Corporate Triathlon than right in our very own backyard. “This is the first time the event has been held outside of Sydney Harbour and it’s coming to a world-class Olympic facility in the heart of the Adventure Capital of NSW,” he said. “The event is open to all businesses and
organisations, and I’d love to see some of our local businesses register teams and show NSW our competitive spirit.” Local individuals and teams are still encouraged to participate and show their community spirit. ocal gymnasts from the Kachan School of Tumbling and Performance came home with excellent results at last week’s Gymnastics NSW Senior State Championships. The school took out seven tumbling State Championship titles, along with coming out on top in the team tumbling event. Glenmore Park teen Ethan McGuiness took out the men’s junior tumbling while Emu Heights resident Jack Hemmings went home with the men’s senior tumbling title. The club’s younger members also had a successful day with Joshua Blench and Mackenzie Lewis taking home the U11’s men’s and women’s tumbling titles respectively. The 2017 Senior State Championships sees the top gymnasts from across NSW compete across five gymsports, over two action-packed weekends of gymnastics. Last weekend saw 250 of the state’s finest acrobatic and trampoline gymnasts battle it out in the premier State Championship competition. “Senior State Championships is always a great reminder of the exceptional talent we have in NSW,” Gymnastics NSW CEO, Aaron Bloomfield said.

he Western Sydney Wanderers are now just one win away from securing their place in the 2017 A-League finals. After a roller coaster season, where coach Tony Popovic was under fire to keep his job, the Wanderers have managed to turn their fortunes around on the back of three straight wins. Western Sydney’s latest victory was a 3-0 thumping of the Newcastle Jets last Saturday at McDonald Jones Stadium. A Robbie Cornthwaite double and a loan goal from Jaushua Sotirio produced the goods for the Wanderers in the much-
T
needed win. Despite missing Brendon Santalab and Mitch Nichols, Popovic praised his younger players for stepping up. “It’s a good group that we have, we had three youngsters start the game and they all did well,” he said. “You’ve got players who are 19 and 20-years-old contributing and the experience they’ll gain this year will only benefit them.” The fifth-placed Wanderers can cement their place in the finals this Saturday when they take on Melbourne Victory at ANZ Stadium. A win will secure the Wanderers a place in the post-season while a draw may also be enough with two games remaining.
Gymnasts did the local area proud “With the remarkable results displayed over the weekend, our athletes are well positioned for the upcoming National Championships in May and World Championships later this year.” The 2017 Gymnastics NSW Senior State Championships will continue in Rooty Hill this weekend.

Helmets will boost safety for cricketers
Teen selected to wear the green and gold but needs to raise $8,000 in sponsorship revenue
Story continued from » p. 80 “We are always proud to be supporting our local community and we’re happy to be providing local teams with these helmets to encourage a safe and active lifestyle,” Mr Garton said. “We hope to see great things from all the local clubs who will be receiving helmets.” Cricket NSW CEO, Andrew Jones, said he was proud that Cricket NSW was partnering on this initiative with the popular restaurant, who have been a long term supporter of developing cricket in NSW. “Cricket is a sport for all and we are committed to making cricket as safe as it is fun for every boy and girl in NSW,” he said. “This partnership with McDonald’s means that all junior clubs right across the state have the opportunity for their teams to play with the latest in helmet technology.”

ocal teenage futsal star Patrick Mahoney has been selected to represent Australia in the United Kingdom and Spain later this
year. The 16-year-old Jamisontown resident will travel to Europe this November to go up against some of the best young futsal players in the world. Speaking with the Weekender, the Western Wolves player said he was chosen to represent his country after being scouted at a recent Australian Futsal Association Nationals competition. “I didn’t know anyone was watching us play at the time but I ended up playing my best and got selected,” Patrick said. “It was an amazing feeling to be chosen because I didn’t think I’d get picked at all.” While the talented teen has represented his state in the past, he’s never had the privilege of donning the green and gold. Patrick said his parents introduced him to the popular sport six years ago. “My parents got me involved in futsal and I ended up enjoying it a lot more than outdoor soccer because the field is smaller and there’s less players,” he said. “I’ve made a lot of friends playing futsal

Patrick said he’s looking for local sponsors to jump on board. “I promise to try my hardest and be
there for my teammates…. I just really want to go over there and play,” he pleaded. “Hopefully some local businesses can get behind me and make my dream come true.” To help support Patrick’s endeavours, email his mum Elizabeth at mahoney. family@bigpond.com.

The Giants will travel to the Gold Coast this Saturday to take on the Queensland Firebirds. RUGBY LEAGUE: Round 8 of the NSWRL Junior Representative season wrapped up last weekend with terrible results for Penrith’s SG Ball and Harold Matthews teams. This Saturday Penrith will take on the South Sydney Rabbitohs in both grades at Redfern Oval.

unior cricket in Penrith has been given a welcome boost thanks to an initiative from McDonald’s Garton Group and Cricket NSW. The program aims to ensure all junior cricket clubs have access to the latest safety equipment, encouraging the youth of NSW to lead a safe and active lifestyle. The Penrith Junior Cricket Association has received 16 of the newest Masuri cricket helmets, featuring the latest StemGuard protection. Facilitated by McDonald’s and Cricket NSW, the helmets have been bought to share with the state’s junior cricket clubs throughout metropolitan and regional NSW. With new helmet standards being introduced Australia-wide in the 2019/20 season, the new equipment provided by Cricket NSW and McDonald’s will assist Penrith clubs with the transition by relieving some of the financial burden associated with the evolution. McDonald’s Licensee, Ian Garton, said he was thrilled to play a part in the program.
