Lest We Forget At just 21-years-old in December 1915, Penrith’s John William Gardiner left behind his young wife Alice and two children, heading for a war zone. During the Battle of Pozieres in August 1916, Mr Gardiner suffered fatal gun shot wounds. Mr Gardiner’s third child was born just weeks after his death on September 17, 1916. His tragic story reflects the lives of thousands of men and women in Australia during the First World War. On this ANZAC Day, we remember John William Gardiner and every man and woman who has served our country.
