Lest We Forget At just 21-years-old in December 1915, Penrith’s John William Gardiner left behind his young wife Alice and two children, heading for a war zone.

During the Battle of Pozieres in August 1916, Mr Gardiner suffered fatal gun shot wounds.

Mr Gardiner’s third child was born just weeks after his death on September 17, 1916.

His tragic story reflects the lives of thousands of men and women in Australia during the First World War. On this ANZAC Day, we remember John William Gardiner and every man and woman who has served our country.

ANZAC DAY

t was 1965, and Terry Ryan had just turned 18-years-old.

After enlisting into the Australian Army in July that year, he was sent to Vietnam in March 1966 as a reinforcement to the 1st Battalion.

Mr Ryan was part of the infantry attached to the 173rd US Airborne Brigade, and was attacked before he was even issued with his first weapon.

“On landing in Vietnam, we had a night at the airbase in Saigon, and the Viet Cong bombed the airbase that night,” he said.

“No one was injured, it was frightening, but I didn’t get off to a great start.”

In June that year, the 1st Battalion went home, and Mr Ryan was transferred to the 6th Battalion to complete his required 12 months of service.

Mr Ryan and the other soldiers at the Australian Task Force’s home base at Núi Đât prepared for major conflict at Long Tan on August 18, however, the night before the base was shelled by the Viet Cong.

The next morning, Mr Ryan and the company of 105 men he was attached to went out searching for the Viet Cong who shelled them.

“The first contact with the enemy was about 3pm when we entered a rubber plantation. Part of our company made contact with a small number of north Vietnamese soldiers,” he said.

“For hours after there was a mass of firefight, there was just continuous machine gun and rifle fire from both sides, as well as three regiments of artillery.”

Mr Ryan said 18 guns back at the base were firing artillery which was landing between 50 and 100 metres in front of them.

“The shells were chopping the tops of the rubber trees as they came in and the branches were landing on top of us,” he said.

“About 6pm when we all withdrew to one position with all our wounded and most of our dead, the enemy lined up to overrun us – they were going to completely wipe us out.

“We were firing on them, and they were firing on us and they were climbing over dead bodies to get to us.”

The remaining men were saved by armoured personnel carriers that arrived just after 6pm, and scared off the

Vietnamese soldiers. Mr Ryan was shot in the arm during the warfare, but was not injured enough to be sent home.

He was back at the unit just three days later.

During this time, Australian soldiers had to bury 245 Vietnamese soldiers that were left in the plantation the night before.

Mr Ryan continued to serve with that unit until March 1967, patrolling the local area in Vietnam.

It wasn’t until after the war in 1969 that Bathurst-born Mr Ryan moved out to Penrith and served a decade in the NSW Police Force in both Penrith and Redfern Local Area Commands.

Mr Ryan, now 69-years-old, lives with family in Cranebrook.

An ANZAC Day service was recently held for schools in the local area

Thousands expected to attend Dawn Services ommunity members from Penrith and St Marys will be well accommodated this year for the annual ANZAC Day Dawn Service.

expecting thousands of people to turn up in the early hours of Monday morning, April 25 for their Dawn Services.

Big screens and extra speakers will be provided by both the Sub-branches so locals who attend each service will be

able to hear and see what is going on.

Penrith RSL Sub-branch will begin their commemorations at 4.30am.

The ANZAC Day March will begin at 4.45am with official service proceedings expected to begin at 5am and run for

about 45 minutes. Secretary at the Sub-branch, Mick Visinko, said they had around 10,000 people attend last year’s service.

“The day is all about remembrance and commemorating who served and is serving for us, which is really important especially as we go into the 101st year,” he said.

St Marys RSL Sub-branch will begin their service at 5am, half an hour earlier than past years and will run for about 30 to 45 minutes.

The Sub-branch held their ANZAC March last Sunday, April 17, but President Ron Kelly said they were hoping for a similar turn out to last year for the Dawn Service.

“We had about 6000 people last year and we would love to have that again; we think we will,” he said.

“It’s important to have the community around for the commemorations, especially to help keep it in the minds of younger generations, otherwise we’re a dying race, you could say.”

Both Sub-branches are inviting locals back to their club for ANZAC Day breakfast.

Penrith RSL Sub-branch’s Dawn Service will be held at Memory Park on the corner of High Street and Woodriff Street, Penrith.

Kingswood families welcome home returned soldiers after World War One. One of the soldiers is Arthur Tolhurst, seen standing fifth from left.

He is leaning on a crutch as he lost his left leg whilst fighting in France in 1917. The group is pictured outside the Trocedero at Kingswood.

Bert Buller married Madge Starling on June 15, 1940, nine days before he enlisted with the 8th Division. In July 1941 he was in Singapore. He would spend the rest of the war in Changi prison. He was discharged from the Army in January 1946.

Madge joined the Australian Women’s Army Service where she became a Sergeant. They lived in Woodriff Street, Penrith.

Stan Colless was born in Penrith on November 19, 1892, the son of Henry and Elizabeth Jane Colless (nee Jordan). He enlisted on June 19, 1915 and was assigned to the 9th reinforcements, 3rd Battalion with the rank of Sergeant. In September 1916, Stan Colless was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) for his bravery during the Battle of Fromelles. He was killed on September 1, 1918.

Young men who never returned

N

o older than 23-yearsold, three brave local young men left their families for the dangers of war.

Local history buff Lorraine Stacker’s 1916 Our Fallen booklet touched on their stories of commitment and sacrifice, after the trio didn’t make it back to tell their own.

Private Errol Cappie Nepean Devlin was born in Penrith in 1891 and was a clerk before his enlistment on August 12, 1914 at just 23-years-old.

He was discharged in March, 1915, after

serving in New Guinea, and re-enlisted in the same month to the 18th Battalion before embarking to Egypt in June.

Less than a day after landing in ANZAC Cove on August 22, the Battalion was committed to the last operation of the August Offensive, the attack on Hill 60.

The Offensive lasted until August 29, and the Battalion lost half of its men in that time.

In a letter to his family dated August 30, Devlin wrote: “We landed at the Dardanelles 10 days ago and we now have only 82 men left out of 270… our dead are still out there unburied”.

By March 25, 1916, Devlin arrived in

Marseilles and on May 30, 1916, he was killed in action.

He was buried in Brewery Orchard Cemetery, Bois-Grenier, France.

Private Edward James Hope was born in Kingswood in 1895, and he and his sister were raised by relatives after the death of their mother, father and infant sibling.

The Penrith Superior School student enlisted on September 23, 1915 at just 20-years-old, and left Australia in December 1915.

Hope arrived in Egypt in February where he trained before being sent to France in June 1916.

His first major battle was in July at Fromelles, and just two days after it began, Hope was reported missing.

It wasn’t until November 1916 that Hope’s status was changed to ‘killed in action’ and, after an investigation, it was revealed a number of soldiers had seen Hope killed in the field.

It was later determined he had died in the front trenches on July 20, one day after the battle begun, and that his body was found and probably interred by the Germans.

Private Thomas Lee moved to Penrith when he was six-years-old in 1900, and worked at Dairy Farmers, Sydney, before his enlistment in May 1915, at just 21-years-old.

Just a month after enlistment, he sailed for war where he was active in both Gallipoli and Egypt.

He was then sent to France in March 1916 and wrote to his family of the tough times and of the local men he’d met.

Lee was killed in action on July 28, 1916, and for some time, there was confusion over where he was buried.

In 1928, his body was found during exhumation works in the vicinity of Pozieres with his identity tag still on.

One year ago...

One year ago in our April 24, 2015 edition of the Weekender, we celebrated 100 years of the ANZAC spirit.

Our dedicated features told the story of Leonay local Jim Nolan, who was just 18-years-old when he volunteered to go to war.

Mr Nolan was a fighter pilot in World War II, and flew in the Battle of Britain in 1941.

Also, Poppy Park added an extra dimension to local ANZAC commemorations, as it honoured every Australian life lost in service since World War I. A whopping 102,804 poppies were aligned in Judges Park, with over half of them representing the lives lost in World War I alone.

The NSW Governor General visited Penrith to open an art exhibition titled ‘Gallipoli’.

The exhibition, held at Panthers, featured 35 Gallipoli themed artworks from children as young as five-years-old to adults.

Penrith was also hit with wild weather causing flooding around town, and gun shots were fired at Nepean Village that resulted in the arrest of a 24-year-old man.

Meanwhile, the Werrington Park Corporate Centre was opened on the Great Western Highway.

The 42km Relay Walk is to honour the bravery and sacrifice of the 42 Australian soldiers who lost their lives during service in Afghanistan.

Those walking in the relay are expected to walk along the 14 circuits of 3km each, that will be divided by the number of contestants in each team.

he State Government still plans to build a new sports venue in outer western Sydney as part of its long-term stadium strategy.

While there’s been major focus on upgrades to ANZ, Allianz and Pirtek Stadiums in recent months, the Weekender can reveal that the planned outer western Sydney stadium is still on the agenda.

Penrith is considered the favourite to secure the new stadium, given the expected boost to population and economic catchment over the next decade and the fact that the Panthers NRL club can guarantee content.

A business case would need to prove to the State Government that the new venue could attract other sports and entertainment content as well.

“The Government’s stadia strategy is heavily focused on western Sydney,” a spokesperson for NSW Premier Mike Baird said.

“That still includes a long term plan for a future outer western Sydney rectangular stadium.

“For the first time, future population growth is accounted for in our planning of future sporting venues.”

Last week, Mr Baird stepped in to help resolve several stalemates surrounding the stadium strategy, with ANZ Stadium emerging as the big winner. The Olympic venue will be transformed into a world-class rectangular stadium, while Allianz Stadium will be refurbished and the major upgrade to Parramatta Stadium will go ahead.

State Opposition says greater west has been left out of stadium strategy DALE DRINKWATER

he State Opposition is accusing Premier Mike Baird of ‘quietly’ funding upgrades to Manly’s Brookvale Oval, and not informing other local grounds such as Penrith.

The $10 million commitment, that wasn’t disclosed in Premier Mike Baird’s stadium funding announcement last week, was released to the media after close of business on Friday afternoon.

At Pepper Stadium on Tuesday, Shadow Sports Minister Lynda Voltz said other sporting grounds weren’t told the extra funding was available in the $1.6 billion stadium strategy.

“The Government had a list of priorities, that no money was going to a tier two stadium until after 2025. A higher priority than that was building a new stadium in greater western Sydney,” she said.

“Yet, the first announcement out of $1.6 billion is $10 million into Brookvale Oval, which is completely against everything they said.”

Ms Voltz claimed the Government started handing out money before allocating it strategically.

“The pot of money will probably disappear before we even get past Allianz Stadium and Homebush,” she said.

Ms Voltz said if there’s going to be

a stadium strategy, the Government should create one that takes in the greater western Sydney area.

“This is where the growth is, and this is where they are going to grow the event market,” she said.

While the State Government said a new outer western Sydney stadium isn’t ‘off the cards’, Member for Londonderry Prue Car said there’s been no real commitment.

“If it’s not off the table, let’s see how much money we are going to get,” she said.

Ms Car said it has been Labor policy for months to focus on western Sydney and Homebush.

“Luke Foley announced that several months ago at a Labor Party conference, that our priority would be western Sydney, and a rebuild of Homebush,” she said.

“The Government sort of copied our policy, came in kicking and screaming, and it took the Premier to come back from overseas and fix up Stuart Ayres’ mess.”

The State Government matched funds for Brookvale Oval after its local member, former Prime Minister Tony Abbott, secured $10 million in Federal Government funding for upgrades.

The state’s funds are from a new $40 million NRL Centre of Excellence fund.

“It means the country’s premium sports content and major events will be showcased in Australia’s global city for decades to come, as a result of our investment in world-class venues.”

Sports Minister and Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said that, after lagging behind the other major states in sporting and major events infrastructure, NSW was seizing the opportunity to get in front.

“It is great news for these codes, as participation and attendance grows in the years to come, but more importantly it is great news for the NSW economy,” Mr Ayres said.

While the stadium strategy was being finalised, the Penrith Panthers Board agreed to take two home games away from Penrith Stadium to the newly refurbished Parramatta Stadium from 2019.

It was seen as a strategic move to help get the stadium strategy over the line and assist Penrith’s bid for the outer western Sydney stadium, but it is understood the Panthers have now withdrawn that commitment.

The NRL has confirmed that the Panthers will not be asked to take games away from Penrith as part of the new stadium deal.

The outer western Sydney stadium is likely to be more than a decade away.

he first telegram arrived some time around May 1942.

Addressed to my great grandfather, Bernard Mulligan, it delivers some troubling news.

“I have been directed by the Minister for the Army to advise you that no definite information is at present available in regard to the whereabouts or circumstances of your son, Private Ronald Phillip Mulligan, 2/20th Battalion AIF.” It’s hard to imagine the fear, concern and sadness that would have been running through Bernard Mulligan’s body when the next telegram arrived some two months later.

“I am directed by the Minister for the Army to advise you that he must now be posted as missing, and to again convey to you the Minister’s sincere sympathy.”

At that stage, it’s probably fair to say that Bernard Mulligan knew the fate that his son Ronald had or was going to meet.

But it would take some three painstaking years before the grim reality was confirmed.

In a hand written telegram, the tragic reality of war hit home for Bernard Mulligan and his family.

“It is with deep regret that I have to inform you that NX57811, Private Ronald Phillip Mulligan, died whilst a Prisoner of War in Sandakan, Borneo on 21st February 1945, and desire to convey to you the profound sympathy of the Minister for Army.”

When he left to fight for his country, Ronald Phillip Mulligan was yet to celebrate his 21st birthday.

He died at the tender age of 24.

His sister, my grandmother Mary, passed away earlier this year. She spoke

When ANZAC Day comes around every year, many of us wake up early and head to the Dawn Service.

It is a time of important reflection and tribute. For each individual, there’s a slightly different reason they’re there and a mixture of feelings running through their thoughts.

One thing we should all reflect on is how bloody lucky we are.

And how much we owe those who served our country, many losing their lives so we could live ours in the high standards we do today.

There is no question that all of us, at times, take for granted the opportunities we have today as a result of those who came before us.

And that’s not just in relation to those who fought on battlefields.

Every generation could do with showing just a little more respect to those who have ‘been there, done that’.

The generation finishing their schooling and entering the workforce today face their own challenges in an ever-changing world. They are more connected, more accessible and more tech-savvy than any generation before them.

Whether that’s a positive or a negative, well, the jury is out on that one.

I do hope though that no matter how glued we are to our phones, no matter how many photos we want to take of ourselves or our food for no apparent reason and no matter how much we want to brag about our lives on social media, that we can all take time out on Monday morning to pay tribute to the men and women who fought and died for us.

It’s far more important than a sleep in and a selfie.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has confirmed his intention to send us to the polls on Saturday, July 2, sparking one of the longest election campaigns in history.

After the Budget is handed down on Tuesday, May 3, Mr Turnbull will request that Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove agree to dissolve both the House of Representatives and the full Senate.

Mr Turnbull must call a double dissolution after the Budget and before May 12, otherwise he is forced to call a standard poll, to elect the House of Representatives and only half of the Senate.

The double dissolution comes after the Senate rejected key Coalition legislation to reinstate the Australian Building and Construction Commission for the second time, used as a trigger by Mr Turnbull to re-elect all 76 Senators.

Liberal Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott has been endorsed to run for the seat of Lindsay in the 13 week election campaign, and will go up against Labor candidate Emma Husar.

Ms Scott said she was unopposed when she was endorsed, and that she will

Penrith Council said the land is already zoned as R4 High Density Residential, and the current planning proposal is to increase the permitted maximum building height.

As part of the proposal, the proponents submitted a draft masterplan of their vision for the site, which includes up to 1,500 residential apartments.

but not for long development set to take place in Penrith Road is also privately owned, and although it’s zoned RU4 Primary Production Small Lots, Penrith Council has no knowledge of any plans for the site.

Cr Fowler said there is a great deal of undeveloped land along Blaikie Road, but there is little opportunity for development along it.

“A lot of Blaikie Road is flood prone,” he said.

“The Coffee Club sits above the one in 100 year flood level, but as you come further back toward Mulgoa Road it drops back. Development there will be fairly restricted.”

The large block of land on Mulgoa Road just south of the Great Western Highway intersection, known as the Carpenters Site is zoned RE1 Public Recreation and SP3 Tourist.

The land is owned by Penrith Council, and is identified as an ‘Opportunity Site’ as part of their Community, Culture and Civic Precinct.

As outlined in Council’s Invitation to Partner, opportunities at this site include a conference venue, space for cultural activities, hotels or visitor accommodation, restaurants, bar and cafes, a gallery and museum or even a lagoon or urban beach.

Council is currently taking planning proposals for the area from investors.

In the highly sought after industrial area along Mulgoa Road, there is one large L-shaped block that bends around the back of a 7-Eleven service station, with more street frontage on Batt Street.

Penrith Council has confirmed that the privately owned prime industrial site is on its way to being used for local business, with consent issued in May last year for the construction of two separate industrial buildings and car parking.

“They can develop that land, but they can’t have access to it off Mulgoa Road, but there is access allowed to Batt Street,” Cr Fowler said.

A large empty block along the Great Western Highway at Kingswood has had its future decided, after Penrith Council approved an eight storey apartment building with 50 units.

The privately-owned site is opposite Kingswood Station, and adjacent to several businesses, and as it is zoned B4 Mixed Use has the potential to integrate residential, business, retail and office spaces.

Penrith Council is also assessing a planning proposal for the Sinclair Hyundai site at High Street and Union Road for mixed use development.

he face of Penrith is changing, with Penrith Council approving the development of hundreds of units in the CBD in the last two months, with thousands more planned.

Millions of dollars worth of high density apartment living in the CBD will cater for the west’s growing population, that is predicted to require 30,000 new dwellings in the next 15 years.

A Penrith Council spokesperson said studies show that to respond to shifts in demographics and population, a further 9,210 apartments will be needed by 2031.

“Equating to a total demand for approximately 461 apartments per year across the Penrith Local Government Area,” he said.

Deputy Mayor Ross Fowler said the apartment ‘phenomenon’ in Penrith began with the development of Thornton Estate, changing the area from suburban to an urban dense lifestyle.

“There has certainly been an uptake in apartment applications in the last two to three years and it seems to be continuing into the future,” he said.

“Council is encouraging it, and the State Government is certainly encouraging it. It gives ability to somebody who is looking to get their foot in the real estate market.”

People looking to break into the real estate market could do so in Penrith, with 147 apartments approved since the

start of March, including 50 in a $5.7 million five storey project in Colless Street, Penrith.

The further 97 apartments will be in Union Road across one six storey and two seven storey buildings valued at $13.5 million, with all three buildings having their own basement car park.

In a meeting on Monday night, Council approved a $9.6 million application for 39 apartments in Fulton Street, Penrith.

Currently in discussion and on public exhibition are another 112 apartments, over two development applications for Rodley Avenue and Lethbridge Street both with an underground car park.

42 units in a six storey building are being considered in Rodley Avenue worth over $9 million, and another six storey building in Lethbridge Street could bring a further 70 units, at a cost of $20.2 million.

Council has also received an application for a seven storey mixed use development in High Street, Penrith, for 39 units and more underground car parking (pictured).

The ground and first levels of the $13 million project will be open to commercial tenancies, with street frontage onto High Street.

St Marys CBD hasn’t been left out of the equation, with the approval of a seven storey building with 48 units on Gidley Street, valued at $7.1 million.

These approvals do not include the number of applications for medium density living such as townhouses.

Walking and cycling boost A $500,000 State Government grant will boost walking and cycling connections in Penrith.

The funding is part of the State Government’s $39 million state-wide investment in such projects.

Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said with cycling more popular than ever before and walking trips on the rise, the NSW Government was providing the infrastructure needed to support local communities.

“This project will provide a huge boost for locals – completing the missing link of the Nepean River walking and cycling network, and providing better connections between local suburbs and to public transport hubs,” he said.

“This investment is about connecting people and places and making a difference to the way residents move around their communities.”

Penrith Deputy Mayor Ross Fowler welcomed the announcement.

Parents are being reminded about the importance of vaccinating children on time in the lead up to World Immunisation Week from April 24 to 30.

Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said the ongoing success of immunisation programs can lead to complacency about the need for timely vaccination at all the schedule milestones.

“The devastating effects of vaccinepreventable disease are, thankfully, no longer so prominent but we must continue to be vigilant to protect the most vulnerable members of our community – our kids,” Mr Ayres said.

“We all get busy and caught up with our daily lives, but the current epidemic of whooping cough in NSW is a reminder that on time vaccination is our best defence,” he added.

“Go ahead city” Penrith’s role as a Regional City and how its success is integral to the future of western Sydney and Australia was the topic of Penrith Council’s meeting with the Assistant Cities Minister Angus Taylor and Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott.

The Minister received an overview of Penrith’s significant potential, the opportunities for economic uplift around the airport and the increased productivity that can be realised through better infrastructure and local jobs.

“Penrith is such a go ahead city and it was a real pleasure to catch up with Deputy Mayor Ross Fowler to talk about how we get more local jobs, better transport and housing,” Mr Taylor said.

arents who have had their child in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) will know all too well just how much of a miracle their little bundle of joy is.

May is the month of miracle babies, with people urged to join in and raise awareness and funds about premature and sick newborns, their families and the hospitals that care for them.

Emu Plains mum of four, Bianka Funnell, was able to take her identical twin girls home for the first time on Tuesday after they were in the NICU in Nepean Hospital for just over two weeks.

Ember and Elektra were delivered via cesarean at 34 weeks and four days, with 37 weeks considered full term for twins.

“It was concerning; I was mostly worried about the regular complications that can go wrong with premature babies, particularly if they were breathing on their own or not,” Ms Funnell said.

Ms Funnell said she knew her girls were having the care they needed.

“It was difficult not knowing if they were going to grow and develop properly, and not being able to touch and hold them is definitely challenging,” she said.

A big part of neonatal care is the research and funding behind it.

Chairperson of the local women and children’s foundation OZWAC, Simon Gould, said their upcoming charity ball is a night where people can help raise some

vital funds for research.

“Our charity is completely local which is something I love and we predominantly fund research at Nepean Hospital,” he said.

“If people come to the charity ball, they would be supporting a really good cause and will be in for a great night too.”

Ice addict started dealing to pay for his habit

An ice addict who started dealing to pay for his habit after being clean for more than five years has dodged further jail time.

Penrith Local Court heard Corey James Shepherd, 26, had a disadvantaged youth but had managed to stay out of trouble until he started using again when his Centerlink benefits were withdrawn in 2014.

Her Honour Magistrate Margaret McGlynn said it was only the fact that he had already spent 202 days in jail and that she saw “a lot of promise” in him that he avoided a further custodial sentence.

“It’s insidious – you supply them and their lives get ruined,” she said.

He was given a two-year good behaviour bond.

Man ignores suspension and gets behind the wheel

A man nabbed driving while suspended has had his licence revoked for 12 months after pleading guilty at Penrith Local Court on Monday.

The court heard Darkie Michael Anderson had initially lost his licence after being caught drink driving.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell told Mr Anderson his latest offence was “not going to help him” when he came up against his drink driving charge.

“When you’re suspended for drink driving you shouldn’t be driving,” he said.

He was given a 12-month automatic suspension and fined $300.

Woman stole Mars Bar to stave off the “munchies”

A woman who stole chocolate to stave off the “munchies” has been placed on a fresh good behaviour bond.

Jody Louise Simms faced Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with breaching her Section 1 bond.

The court heard Ms Simms had taken steps to address her drug dependency.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell warned her

not to “go back to her dishonest ways”.

“Don’t get the munchies and take Mars bars without paying for them,” he said.

Two year ban for man driving 165km/h in an 80km/h zone

A lead foot driver caught doing 165km/h in an 80km/h zone along the Great Western Highway has been ordered to stay off the road for two years.

Joel Pearce fronted Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with ‘speed dangerous to the public’.

The court heard Mr Pearce was using two lanes to cut corners in order to maintain his erratic speed and when pulled over by police held his licence out and simply said “take it”.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell was scathing of the young man’s actions, saying it showed a total disregard for responsibility and public safety.

“It’s going to be a while until you get your licence again,” he said.

He was convicted and fined $1,500.

Released from jail on Friday, back in court on Monday

A man released from jail on Friday has faced court three days later charged with ‘goods in custody’.

Denver William Tipene Smith appeared before Penrith Local Court on Monday where he was given a four-month suspended sentence and fined $500 after pleading guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell reminded Mr Smith that he was technically in custody.

“If you keep getting hot property in your pocket you’re going to go back to jail,” he said.

“Stay out of trouble for four months... otherwise your freedom from Friday will be short lived.”

Three month suspension for man who should know better

Joseph Steiner, 28, has been disqualified from driving for three months after pleading guilty to driving while under the

influence of cannabis and possessing a prohibited drug.

While acknowledging it was his first major offence, Magistrate Roger Clisdell said Mr Steiner’s traffic record showed a general disregard for road rules.

He was fined $300 for driving under the influence and $200 for possession of cannabis.

Man thought he could keep driving despite disqualification

A man caught driving two days after he was forced to surrender his licence on the spot has had his disqualification period extended.

Shazeb Allam told Penrith Local Court on Monday he thought he could drive until he received a formal letter in the mail.

However, Magistrate Roger Clisdell said it would have been “as plain as your nose” that Mr Allam was automatically disqualified when he was caught driving more than 45km/h over the speed limit on March 18.

“It’s pretty clear if they take your licence off you and they say ‘you’re suspended’ – you’re suspended aren’t you,” Magistrate Clisdell said.

He was fined $300 and disqualified for 12 months.

Man promises he’ll never do drugs again after being caught

A man will be forced to fork out a week’s wages after pleading guilty to possessing prohibited drugs.

Matthew Kiel Muller told Penrith Local Court on Monday the offence was a one off thing.

“It will never happen again,” he said.

He was fined $150 for possession of cannabis and $200 for possession of ice.

Case dismissed: Coming to court “enough of a penalty”

A man has found out the hard way that a motorised pushbike requires a driver’s licence.

Robert Roy fronted Penrith Local Court

on Monday where he told the court he had never held a licence and was unaware he required one to operate a motorised pushbike.

“I’ve already sold it,” he said.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell said he was satisfied Mr Roy did not intentionally try to break the law and dismissed the case.

“Having to come to court is enough of a penalty,” he said.

Father punched son’s coach in dramatic incident

A father who punched his son’s coach during a fiery confrontation has been hit with a $500 fine.

Khain Mackey, 40, fronted Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with affray.

The court heard Mr Mackey acted out of character when he punched his 12-yearold son’s coach twice in full view of children, after taking issue with the way his son was being spoken to.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell said he may have been more lenient had the two men “gone behind the dressing rooms and sorted it out themselves”.

He took into account the club’s own 12-month ban when handing down his decision.

Man drove because there was nobody to take him home

Ilalio Niko has been disqualified from driving for eight months and slapped with a $700 fine after pleading guilty to mid-range drink driving.

Using a Fijian interpreter, Mr Niko told Penrith Local Court on Monday he had been invited to attend a party after a funeral on the day of the offence, but when he wanted to go home there was no one to take him.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell acknowledged Mr Niko’s traffic record wasn’t the “worst he had seen” but said it was aggravated by the fact he was on a good behaviour licence at the time.

“Make sure that you get a new licence before you drive again,” he warned.

Penrith: Man arrested after spitting on police cars

Police weren’t far away from a man when he allegedly decided to spit on three marked police cars last week.

At about 2.45pm on Thursday, April 14, a 22-year-old Cranebrook man was walking past Penrith Police Station on High Street, Penrith, when he allegedly spat on three marked police vehicles.

An on duty police officer, who was dressed in plain clothing at the time, witnessed the incident and escorted the man into the police station.

He was arrested and charged with three counts of ‘malicious damage’.

He was given a field court attendance notice to appear in Penrith Local Court on Thursday, April 28.

PolAir. The 19-year-old was seen to arrive at an address on Hughes Avenue, Penrith.

He took off his gloves and jumper, went inside the house and went to bed.

A number of police arrived at the address and arrested the accused.

He was charged with eight separate charges and was released on conditional bail.

He is due to appear in Penrith Local Court today, Thursday, April 21.

Women in hot water after stolen items found

A man was arrested after police patrolling the area noticed illegal plants sitting in his kitchen window.

At about 3.15pm on Wednesday, April 13, a 33-year-old South Penrith man was approached by police at his residence.

Police spoke to the occupant about the alleged cannabis plants.

The 33-year-old made admissions to police which led to his arrest.

He is due in Penrith Local Court on June 6 for ‘cultivate prohibited plant’.

Two women pushed their luck when they allegedly shoplifted twice in the one day.

At about 2.10pm on Thursday, April 14, a 33-year-old Cranebrook woman and a 30-year-old Blackett woman were caught by loss prevention officers at Bunnings Warehouse North Penrith when they allegedly attempted to walk out of the store with a number of stolen items.

Police attended the scene and subsequently searched the vehicle they were using.

A number of items were recovered in the vehicle from Kmart Penrith. The pair were there earlier in the day.

The 33-year-old is due in Penrith Local Court on June 15 for shoplifting and the 30-year-old was given a criminal infringement notice.

A police pursuit was initiated last week when police witnessed a man riding a motorcycle on a footpath in Penrith.

At about 10.15am on Thursday, April 14, police observed a 19-year-old Penrith man riding a motorcycle on a footpath on Coreen Avenue, Penrith, without an approved helmet.

Police attempted to stop him but the man kept riding, leading to a police pursuit.

5. A warrant has been issued for your arrest.

6. Apprehended Violence Order related issues.

A police officer may use as much force as they deem necessary to arrest you.

That said, unreasonable force will be deemed to be an assault. It is important to remember that if you are arrested, you should cooperate even if you think you are innocent. This is because resisting arrest is an offence unto itself. Submitting to an arrest is not an admission of guilt, it is simply avoiding the threat of any further charges.

Once you are arrested the police then have the power to search you and, if they deem necessary, search you again once they take you to a police station.

Once you’re at the station you have a right to contact a lawyer and you should do so before being interviewed, to make sure you understand your rights.

Police will then decide whether to charge you with an offence and if they do, whether to release you on bail or keep you in custody.

Standen to be sentenced in June Paedophile and former deputy principal of Penrith’s St Dominic’s College, David Standen, has heard the gutwrenching accounts of his victims at a pre-sentencing hearing.

Standen, 67, sat in the prisoners’ dock at Downing Centre District Court as 11 victims told the court how the Christian Brother’s crimes had damaged their lives and led to family break-ups, life-long

struggles with drug and alcohol abuse and railroaded careers.

Standen, who spent six years as deputy principal at St Dominic’s, pleaded guilty on March 2 to 18 child sex charges committed during his time as a teacher at a Catholic boys’ boarding school in southern New South Wales in the late 70s and early 80s.

He will be sentenced in June.

As the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) comes into play, NADO President, Ray Dyer, said the merging of NILC and NADO early last week can offer a better range of services.

“We’re here for the clients. By growing with the addition of the NILC group, NADO can do more for the community, expanding into more options for independent living and accommodation support,” he said.

NILC President, Cecile Gray, said the merger will provide more certainty in funding, so they can invest in the future.

“The NDIS offers great promise and opportunities for our clients, however for NILC without block funding, our cash flow may become uncertain,” she said.

“We don’t want to expose our clients to any risk or reduction in the quality of their services. They deserve the best.”

While Sports Minister Stuart Ayres obsesses with sports stadiums in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, regional tourism organisations are withering on the vine. The recent and unedifying Sydney sports stadium debate has an unfortunate side story – the neglect of Mr Ayres’ other areas of responsibility, particularly regional tourism.

Regional tourism has been all but forgotten under the Baird-Grant Government, despite the fact that it brings in $12.9 billion to the NSW economy and supports over 150,000 jobs. In his capacity as Minister for Tourism, Mr Ayres has delayed and delayed again finalising a substantial review into the funding and organisation of regional tourism organisations.

While the industry continues to wait for the review – now seven months overdue – Mr Ayres has been silent. Meanwhile, one operator responsible for promoting tourism across most of north and western NSW has gone into voluntary administration, while others are fighting for their survival. Inland NSW Tourism called in the administrators earlier this month after encountering difficulty accessing grants from the Government.

Fundraiser attracts huge numbers Almost $10,000 raised at Fitness 4 Autism event; organisers hope for even more next year JADE ALIPRANDI

his year’s Fitness 4 Autism event was a huge success after both last year’s fundraising total and participant numbers were doubled.

The event is a collaboration between the Luke Priddis Foundation and Little by Little Inc where participants run or walk a five kilometre course around Jamison Park.

General Manager of the Luke Priddis Foundation, Tamara Van Antwerpen, said almost $10,000 was raised on the day, held earlier this month.

“Having such large participant numbers and our fundraising total doubling last year’s is a real testament to our community and demonstrates how aware people are becoming about Autism,” she told the Weekender.

Over 550 people took part, one of the largest groups of people since the event’s inception.

Face painting, jumping castles, a free Rotary barbecue, try time exhibition games, fly ball demonstrations and family friendly activities were also available for children to join in on the fun.

Susan Day will be Penrith City Children’s Services Cooperative’s new Community Representative Director. Ms Day was endorsed by Penrith Councillors in a meeting on Monday night from her role as a Parent Director, which she has been in since the Board’s inception in 2002.

Council voted to hold off on granting permission for a construction company to use the unused basketball court next to Glenmore Park Youth and Community Centre. The initial report to Council suggested that Quasar Constructions could locate their site office on the unused basketball court for just $110 a week, while they upgrade the Glenmore Park Town Centre. Councillors supported a suggestion to defer the decision pending the reassessment of the rent price. The shopping centre will continue to operate during the 16 month construction.

Council received a development application for an indoor golf centre in Jamisontown. While it is still early days and there has been no approval of the application, the commercial development would cost $60,000 and could be located at 233 to 235 Mulgoa Road.

The next Ordinary Council Meeting will be held on May 23 at 7.30pm.

This meeting, open to the public, will be when Council’s Operational Plan quarterly reviews for September and March are presented.

hree-year-old Paraguayan boy Tobias is now receiving the treatment he needs for clubfoot after an international search was sparked last October.

A group of parents who are part of the ‘Aussie Clubfoot Kids’ group on Facebook are helping provide life-changing treatment to Tobias, a boy they have never met.

Clubfoot is the term used when the foot is deformed and twisted so the sole cannot be placed flat on the ground, with most characteristics of the disorder present at birth.

Jordan Springs mum of five, Rebecca Banks, has a two-year-old son, Carter Sargent, who has the disorder and said she is happy that the group are able to help Tobias.

“It’s a fantastic thing for us to be able to do,” she said.

“Every case of clubfoot is different including the type of treatment needed which he is now able to receive.”

The group were able to track down Tobias last October after he appeared on screen for less than 30 seconds in a report about a poverty-stricken town in Paraguay.

Steps of Hope Walk Saturday, April 30

WestCare Community Services will hold their annual fundraiser ‘Steps of Hope Walk’ next Saturday, April 30.

In partnership with Angels of Mercy Welfare Services Inc, the walk supports newly arriving refugee women and children who have been suffering from domestic violence.

It’s up to participants whether they walk, run, scooter or stroll around the course.

’m in my apartment in New York, sitting on my bed with a laptop, writing my column for a New York newspaper. OK, so I’m really in a hotel room, not an apartment, and my column is for The Western Weekender not a New York newspaper. But I am really in New York as I write this, having fun pretending that I’m fictional New York columnist Carrie Bradshaw (from TV show ‘Sex and the City’)!

Some readers might think I’m being pretty silly, but I think it’s important not to be ‘serious’ all the time.

If you’ve spent any time with children under age 10, you will know that they generally have outlandish and crazy dreams for their future by adult standards. Some of the most successful people are those who haven’t let go of those ‘crazy’ ideas and let themselves continue to dream big (think Richard Branson).

So how about you? Do you let your thoughts go wild about the possibilities for your business? Do you let yourself ponder questions like ‘what would I do with unlimited resources?’.

Start with paper and pen (there is a lot of research which shows that creativity is better supported by using ‘old school’ writing methods, rather than using a screen). Write down as many ‘beyond your wildest dreams’ ideas for your business.

When you do this, don’t let practicalities get in the way. Be child-like and jot them down with no other intention.

This might just be a two minute exercise or you might like to let your mind wander for longer.

You could either pin these ideas on the wall, or put them away and look at them every now and again.

If you have never done this, or haven’t done it in a long time, I encourage you to try it!

It doesn’t mean all those wishes will magically occur, or necessarily change the current trajectory of your business.

But what it can do is open your mind to the possibility of something bigger and better for your business.

Dreams can only come true if you have them in the first place.

P

lenty of people have called Penrith’s hard fought 20-16 win over the Roosters on Monday night ‘ugly’, and while it may not have been the prettiest of performances, it was certainly a professional one.

In games like that, played in awful conditions, experience and professionalism mean a lot.

Halfback Jamie Soward took superb control of the contest, particularly in the final 10 minutes, and his kicking game helped to ensure the Panthers didn’t give the Roosters too many opportunities to grab the game at the death.

It’s the kind of experience that more than 200 senior games brings, but even Soward is still learning. When the Panthers lost in the final moments to the Bulldogs in

round two, it came after Soward gifted the opposition a seven tackle set in the dying minutes. There was no sign of such play on Monday night and the fact that the Roosters were forced into seven goal line drop-outs shows just how accurate Penrith’s kicking game was.

The Panthers played to the conditions.

Bryce Cartwright resisted the constant temptation to off-load, Soward kept plenty of his kicks low and Trent Merrin and Reagan Campbell-Gillard did the hard yards up the middle (the latter continuing to out-shine his more experienced front row partner in Sam McKendry).

And while Penrith’s final completion rate sat at 74 per cent courtesy of a few late errors, it hovered over 80 per cent for most of the night, which went a long way to securing victory.

Is improvement required to beat the high flying Sharks on Sunday? Absolutely.

Penrith missed a worrying 46 tackles on Monday night – more than any other team in round seven, including Newcastle

who were spanked 53-0 by Brisbane. It is something that has been of concern for much of the season and the Panthers certainly need to find a way to tighten up the defensive unit, particularly in the middle of the park.

If the Panthers fail to contain players like Andrew Fifita, Wade Graham and Paul Gallen on Sunday, they could be in for a long afternoon. Peter Wallace also faces one of his biggest tests at dummy half – Michael Ennis is superb on the back of quick play-the-balls and we know how much he frustrates opposition hookers.

The Panthers must shut down Cronulla’s forward pack so attacking weapons like Ben Barba, Jack Bird and Valentine Holmes have their opportunities limited.

I’m expecting a pretty open game of footy – both sides like to throw the ball around if conditions are good, and you would expect the Panthers to chance their arm close to the line with Soward, Moylan and Cartwright all hitting their straps at a key time of the season.

It was great to see Waqa Blake in open space on Monday night but even more impressive was his defence – the Roosters targeted his side of the field and he was forced to make 26 tackles, versus Peta Hiku who was kept reasonably quiet with just eight tackles made.

I’m expecting points galore on Sunday with Panthers fans likely to again be biting their nails (what’s left of them, anyway) in the final minutes. Tip: Panthers by 1.

rounding his own future on himself, I can assure you that Phil Gould is not close to leaving his role at the Panthers. Gould has given the Panthers Board an assurance that he’s around for at least the mediumterm, but his workload will obviously decrease now that Corey Payne has been appointed as Football CEO. It’s unlikely Gould will ever totally leave the Panthers – he’s expected to stay on as a consultant even when he does finish up in his day-to-day role, and don’t be surprised if he ultimately aims to fill a vacant Board position in the long-term.

» Phil Gould and Bob Fulton have a

strong relationship so it was no surprise to hear that the Manly supremo was recently given a guided tour of the new Panthers Rugby League Academy.

» Prop Sam McKendry has landed him-

self in some hot water after being charged with contrary conduct following an incident in Monday night’s game against the Roosters. McKendry came into contact with referee Jared Maxwell in the 72nd minute. He was due to fight the charge at the judiciary last night.

» Expect the future of Elijah Taylor to be sorted out at some stage in the next few weeks. As I’ve been telling you since the start of the season, Taylor is on the outer at Panthers HQ and a release either to the Roosters or Tigers is expected in the not too distant future. Taylor has been stuck in reserve grade for the bulk of the season.

preparing for life without Jamie Soward and Peter Wallace, with the club reportedly offering Corey Norman a $1.8 million deal over three years. Rumour has it that Norman rejected the deal, and has also rejected the most recent offer from his current club, Parramatta. It’s unlikely that Norman will make a final decision on his future until the Eels’ salary cap dramas have reached a conclusion.

last week to push the case for Penrith to be the location of the new ‘outer western Sydney’ stadium, which is still in the State Government’s long term plans.

“Penrith is at the centre of this new western corridor. Plans are well underway for this city to develop over the next decade to provide the necessary quantity and quality of housing and urban living accommodation, lifestyle precincts, entertainment hubs and the very best of sporting facilities for the sport loving residents in and around these areas,” Gould wrote. “Central to all of this will be an urgently needed upgrade of Pepper Stadium. The NSW government has already flagged that funds will eventually be provided for a fourth stadium development in the greater western area.”

While I understand the NRL’s desire to protect match officials, results can often be determined by close video referee calls and surely coaches deserve the right to have an opinion on them. ollowing a more than six month search, Penrith have announced former NRL forward Corey Payne as their new Rugby League CEO. The 31-year-old, who will be the youngest CEO in the game, steps into the role which has been vacant since the departure of current Wests Tigers boss Justin Pascoe last year.

“I’m very excited by the opportunity to join the Panthers,” Payne said.

“Over the last five years Phil Gould has put the club back in a financially viable position, ensured the salary cap is in good shape and established solid foundations on which we can build for the future.

“There is a fantastic feeling about the

club and I’m looking forward to being part of it.”

Payne played 131 games for the St George Illawarra Dragons, Wests Tigers and Canterbury Bulldogs over the course of eight seasons in the NRL. Having obtained a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Sydney, he retired in 2012 to complete his Masters of Commerce and pursue a career in business.

As a recipient of the prestigious Churchill Fellowship, Payne travelled to a number of countries conducting research into how sport can be used for social change and capacity building with the community.

Payne is also the Founder of the Future Direction Network, an organisation that aims to raise the ambition and aspiration of youth from south west Sydney to pursue university education.

Payne said Panthers supporters had many reasons to be optimistic about the future of the club.

“With the opening of the Panthers Rugby League Academy, the club now boasts the best training facility in the southern hemisphere, providing us with opportunity to attract, retain and develop the best talent in the game,” Payne said.

“Finally the Panthers have a young and skilful NRL team that can achieve some-

thing special, not just in the near future, but over the long-term.”

Panthers Executive Manager Rugby League, Phil Gould, hailed Payne’s appointment as a significant coup.

“With rugby league in his blood and his passion for the game, this position could already be seen as a natural fit for both Corey and the Panthers,” Gould said.

Payne’s appointment completes a restructure of Penrith’s management team with Brian Fletcher in place as Group CEO and David O’Neill the new Chairman.

fter being dropped to reserve grade the previous week, it was certainly a welcome return to first grade for Panthers star Tyrone Peachey on Monday night.

Before this week’s comeback against the Sydney Roosters, the 24-year-old had been enduring a fairly quiet opening five weeks, which resulted in coach Anthony Griffin swinging the axe the utility’s way for last week’s clash with North Queensland.

Speaking with Extra Time last Friday afternoon, the former Cronulla Shark admitted it was confronting to learn from coach Griffin that he was not performing.

“I knew I wasn’t playing good but hear-

ing it from him was eye opening,” Peachey said.

“I just hadn’t been performing… I wasn’t playing good and he sent me back to reserve grade for the weekend.”

Before returning off the bench during Penrith’s tight 20-16 win at a soggy Allianz Stadium, Peachey wasn’t sure if he’d ever make it back to first grade this year.

He said he put a lot of focus into training hard to get back in Griffin’s good books.

“I trained hard this week to try and fix everything, and hopefully it turns around and I do get an opportunity back in first grade this year,” he said last Friday.

Peachey’s opportunity to prove himself did come again just days later with a decent performance against the bottomplaced Roosters on Monday.

In 52 minutes, the incumbent City Origin rep made 16 tackles and ran 80 metres.

this Sunday afternoon when Penrith travel to Cronulla to take on his former team.

Peachey said it’s been a challenging start to the year but admits he can feel a run of wins right around the corner.

“I think we’ve had a tough draw but I think we’re getting better every week. If we fix a few things we can get a little run going fairly soon,” he said.

The first State of Origin game is just around the corner and there are some positions that are certainly up for grabs.

Fullback could either go to Josh Dugan or James Tedesco, with both players putting their best foot forward for selection. The half and five-eighth pairing is still a major talking point and I don’t think that any of the pivots have stamped their name on the back of an Origin jersey for NSW at this stage of the competition. Having said that, my two halves would be Aiden Seizer and Josh Reynolds, with Seizer controlling the kicking game along with the general play calls and Reynolds to provide that little bit of unpredictability which could be the difference between winning and losing for NSW. The back row is the other position that will give Laurie Daley a few headaches with plenty of fantastic options available. Bryce Cartwright, Josh Jackson, Wade Graham, Ryan Hoffman, Luke Lewis, Beau Scott, just name a few.

In the centres I would have Michael Jennings on the left and on the right I would give James Roberts his chance, although with him being from Kempsey it would not surprise me if Queensland have already claimed him.

The forward pack almost picks itself but a front row position is now available with Aaron Woods being ruled out through injury. This may provide the opportunity for a young player to make their debut like Jake Trbojevic, Jack Debellin, Reagan Campbell-Gillard with Paul Gallen also to play in the front row.

The wing spot could go to a number of players and with Brett Morris injured, it is likely to open up a range of opportunities for others.

Regardless of which team the selectors decide to go with I just hope they stand by their decision for the series and only make changes if forced upon through injury.

Doing this will generate confidence amongst the squad.

two straight wins the Penrith Panthers have been brought back down to earth with a thud, losing to the Wyong Roos 28-6 last weekend.

Despite a couple of big name inclusions in Elijah Taylor and Jeremy Latimore, the Panthers were well and truly out of sorts from the opening kick-off, letting the ball bounce over the sideline.

Penrith were still in the hunt at halftime down 14-6, but too many sloppy errors got in the way of a comeback.

The afternoon got even worse for Penrith in the 56th minute when Panthers centre Sam Clune passed the ball to former teammate Chris Smith who, as of last week, now plays for Wyong.

Smith thought all his Christmases had come at once and raced away 40m before being rounded up.

The lone try scorer for Penrith was Corey Harawira-Naera. Josh Hall kicked one from one.

This weekend most of the competition, including the Panthers, will enjoy the weekend off before returning to face Mounties in Round 9.

» Holden Cup: The Penrith Panthers are proving they could be even better than last year following another belting of a top four side.

This time it was the second-placed Sydney Roosters who were on the wrong side of a 50-4 Panthers thrashing on Monday night.

The Panthers are so far ahead of the pack that they have a points differential

152 points better than their nearest opponent.

The only blow for the Panthers was the injury to gun five-eighth Jarome Luai, who went off with a knee complaint.

Try scorers for the Panthers included Dylan Edwards (2), Tyrone May (2), Ratu Tuisese (2), Wayde Egan, Cowen Epere and Braidon Burns. Nathan Cleary kicked six from eight.

This Sunday afternoon the competition leading Panthers will hit the road to take on the third-placed Cronulla Sharks in the Shire.

» Ron Massey Cup: After enjoying a bye last weekend, St Marys will return to action this Sunday in Round 8 of the Ron Massey Cup competition.

The fifth-placed St Marys will travel to Ringrose Park to take on the competition-leading Wentworthville Magpies.

E

ven after 40 years in the industry The Pointer Sisters’ music is still as loved as ever.

With the group’s hit songs popping up on TV and film – in movies like ‘Love Actually’ and ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ – it’s clear that a catchy song never loses its appeal.

The all female pop/R&B group from Oakland, California, are most well known for their tracks ‘Jump (For My Love)’, ‘I’m So Excited’ and ‘Automatic’.

The group’s influences span everything from pop, disco, funk and blues, and band member Ruth Pointer explains this drive to explore different genres was influenced by the sisters’ love of music, which emerged during their childhood.

“We grew up listening to all different types of music; country and RnB and blues and gospel and hymns and anthems and patriotic music,” she said.

“Even as kids, we were never really passionate about just one particular type of music. If it was a good song it was a good song.”

Flash forward to 2016 and though there’s been a few changes to the lineup, The Pointer Sisters show no sign of slowing down.

The trio – which now consists of Ruth, her daughter Issa and granddaughter Sadako – will be heading to Rooty Hill RSL this June as part of their Greatest Hits tour.

The show will be a trip down memory lane and a chance for fans to experience all of The Pointer Sisters’ most loved tracks live.

Australia well and truly embraced the group with nine top 40 hits including ‘Slow Hand’, ‘Baby Come and Get It’, ‘I’m So Excited’, ‘Jump’, ‘He’s So Shy’, ‘Neutron Dance’, ‘Dare Me’, ‘Should I Do It’ and ‘Automatic’.

Ruth describes the experience of touring as her “joy”, but she has also started exploring other creative endeavours including taking on the role of writer with the release of her memoir Still So Excited!: My Life As A Pointer Sister.

In the book Ruth talks candidly about her struggle with addiction and how she’s managed to stay sober now for over 30 years. While it’s not an easy thing to overcome, Ruth says her experiences

have offered many life lessons.

“Every single day I see new light in my head, in my heart, in my eyes, in my demeanour, in my decisions, in the way I live my life on a daily basis,” she said.

“I can get bored easily but I think in these last 30 years I’ve found ways to

occupy my time, occupy my spirit, without having to do a whole lot.”

But it’s the witch Gothel who will have the biggest transformation, learning to love, laugh and enjoy the happier side of life.

hey’ve only been around since 2013 and to now have made just two wines, a Malbec and a Tempranillo, but unusually-named La La Land Wines that are part of the larger Wingara wine group, have now released their first white – a very more-ish 2015 Pinot Gris.

Made from fruit from the Murray Darling region that straddles the Murray River to embrace part of northwestern Victoria and western NSW, this is a more-than rewarding drop that’s both light and fresh, and has a flavoursome palate of crunchy nashi pear, white peach and hints of zingy lemon/lime.

And it can only help further cement Pinot Gris’ currently bourgeoning popularity in this country, and which is interesting because the variety – whose history dates back to the Middle Ages in homeland Burgundy – is certainly anything than new here. For in fact it was first grown by James Busby who included Pinot Gris amongst some 363 vine cuttings he brought back with him in 1832 from a visit to Spain and France, and planted in what is now the Sydney Botanic Gardens.

The La La Land 2015 Pinot Gris is priced at $16, and makes for a great match with sushi, fish tacos or a butter chicken.

One to note: When Peter Rymill founded the family wine business along with his wife Judy in Coonawarra in 1974, it was not as if he did not come with some “form” when it comes to our wine history – it was his great, great grandfather, John Riddoch who actually founded Coonawarra itself in 1890. And since 1974 one variety that Rymill have shown they’re consistent masters at is Cabernet Sauvignon, a recently-released 2013 classic drop redolent with rich dark fruit flavours, chocolate and liquorice.

At $35 it will only further develop nicely with cellar age.

ZUMBO’S JUST DESSERTS LATE 2016 CHANNEL SEVEN

Ê British chef Rachel Khoo, who featured recently in ‘My Kitchen Rules’, will co-host ‘Zumbo’s Just Desserts’ alongside pâtissier, Adriano Zumbo. She will join Zumbo as amateur dessert makers face off for the series title of dessert king or queen. ‘Zumbo’s Just Desserts’ will air on Seven later this year. Ê ‘Today’ hosts Karl Stefanovic, Lisa Wilkinson and Sylvia Jeffreys will host Channel Nine’s coverage of the ‘TV Week Logies Red Carpet’. ‘The 58th Logie Awards’ will air live on Sunday, May 8. Ê Channel Seven has secured the rights to broadcast the 2017 Rugby League World Cup, which will be held in Australia. The tournament will be played over five weeks starting in the last weekend of October. Seven will show the big matches on their primary channel and minor games on 7mate. Seven broadcast the last Rugby League World Cup in 2013 and used a range of commentators including Andrew Voss. With many local commentators, like Voss, now signed to long-term deals with Fox Sports and Channel Nine, it’ll be interesting to see who Seven gets to call their games. Ê Press in the UK are reporting that ‘X Factor Australia’ is very keen on former UK judge and Girls Aloud singer Cheryl

Fernandez-Versini and her boyfriend, One Direction’s Liam Payne for its upcoming season. Getting the 22-year-old One D star would be huge for the Seven series, which struggled big time last year.

Ê ‘Criminal Minds’ spin-off ‘Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders’ will premiere at 9pm this Monday, April 25 on Seven. Ê It’s the news ‘Gilmore Girls’ fans have all been waiting to hear, with the announcement that Melissa McCarthy will be joining the revived Netflix series. McCarthy played popular character Sookie on the original series and will reprise her role when the show returns soon.

Ê I received some snail mail this week from local reader Elaine Lacey who asked, why do some TV networks list shows as ‘To Be Advised’ in the TV guide?

The simple answer for this is that due to editors of TV guide publications requiring certain copy in advance to meet with deadlines, TV networks sometimes aren’t exactly sure what they are going to run in a certain timeslot before the publication’s deadline. With the TV landscape being so competitive due to ratings, sometimes TV networks wait until that day before deciding what goes to air. You’ll find ‘To Be Advised’ listed a lot during the middle of the day or late at night. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely to change!

people live in these areas of the world, there’s some obvious commonalities that may be having a positive effect on the inhabitants’ health and longevity.

One of those is diet. While the foods consumed may vary from region to region, each of the five areas listed eat a largely plant based diet.

They love their fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts

and grains, while meat is consumed in lower quantities, generally around once a week.

One of the foods The Blue Zones do have in common are beans. There’s no doubt that beans have a pretty impressive nutritional profile.

They’re a great source of protein, fibre, iron and calcium, and are low in saturated fat, making them the perfect replacement for meat.

These regions also eat in moderation and tend to consume their largest meal earlier in the day.

While longevity is not solely based on diet I think there’s plenty that we can take away from these Blue Zone examples.

These communities don’t get caught up in fad diets and they don’t focus on the latest ‘superfood’. They keep it simple, making delicious meals that are packed full of the good stuff, and consume many of their meals with family and friends (another common trait of the Blue Zones is their social connections).

So next time you’re thinking about making changes to the way you eat, instead of jumping on the diet bandwagon, take a leaf out of the Blue Zone book and add more of your favourite plant foods into your diet instead.

Ear infections can be one of the most frustrating and painful conditions for our pets. Low grade ear infections can often go unnoticed. They cause pain and long term damage to the ear canal and can also effect hearing.

The correct term for ear infections is otitis externa and it occurs when bacteria or yeast infect the external ear canal.

Some breeds, particularly those with large or hairy ears like Cocker Spaniels, Poodles or Old English Sheepdogs are prone to ear infections, but they can occur in any breed.

It is important that you are able to recognise the early symptoms of ear infections.

An animal with an ear infection becomes very uncomfortable as the ears become swollen and sensitive. They usually shake their head and scratch at the ears in the aim to get the debris out. Ears often become inflamed and

develop an offensive odour and a black or yellow tinged discharge commonly occurs.

So what causes ear infections? There are many different causes. Several types of bacteria and at least one type of yeast will cause an infection. Ear mites are also another common cause. Pets can also get foreign bodies in their ears such as grass seeds.

Another common cause of ear infections are skin allergies. With skin allergies the ear becomes itchy and the pet causes secondary infection in the ear by scratching.

In order to treat ear infections we need to first examine the ear canal with an instrument called an otoscope. This has a special ear piece that goes into the ear with a light and a magnifying glass.

Most ear infections are treated with ear drops. Your veterinarian will be able to show the best way to do this with your pet. It is important to ensure the infection has completely healed before stopping medication and a follow up check will help with this. Some pets will require long term medications and ear cleaners to prevent recurrence of the problems.

When an ear canal becomes severely damaged surgery may be recommended for long-term maintenance.

nfluenza is a highly infectious illness caused by the flu virus.

It is different from the common cold as symptoms are more severe and they occur much quicker.

The most common symptoms include: • Fever/chills – the body temperature increases to 38-41 degrees. A cold will only cause a slight body temperature increase.

• Body aches and pains – the entire body (particularly joints) will ache. In the case of a cold it is usually just the legs.

• Fatigue • Cough and severe sore throat – a cold

will only cause a scratchy throat.

• Severe headache These symptoms usually last 3-7 days but may continue for 2-3 weeks. With the case of a cold the recovery time is far less.

Influenza can also lead to chest, ear and sinus infections which in some cases will last for a few more weeks.

There is little that can be done to stop influenza. Treating the symptoms e.g. pain relief and having plenty of water and rest is usually what is required. Please see your pharmacist or doctor for advice on symptom treatment.

As with most health related issues, prevention is better than treatment. Each

year the flu vaccine is developed to cover the most common strains of influenza virus predicted for that year. Receiving a flu injection is a fantastic way of knowing you have given your best chance of avoiding the flu this year.

Vitamins and healthy lifestyle are also great ways of reducing the chances of developing colds and flu. A dietitian can write a dietary plan for prevention and recovery from the flu virus. Selenium, vitamin C, zinc, olive leaf and echinacea are fantastic immune boosters. Please speak to a naturopath or pharmacist and start taking a suitable immune booster for the coming winter.

evenge will be on the minds of many Western Sydney Wanderers players and fans this Sunday evening when they take on arch enemies Brisbane Roar for a place in the 2016 A-League Grand Final.

Sunday’s blockbuster at Pirtek Stadium will be the third major clash between the old foes, which includes the 2013 Grand Final Qualifier and the 2014 A-League Grand Final.

In 2013, Western Sydney defeated the Roar for a place in their inaugural Grand Final, while the following year the Roar

inflicted revenge on the Wanderers to win the 2014 decider in extra time.

Wanderers striker Brendon Santalab admitted memories of the 2014 clash still haunt him to this day.

“Yeah definitely… I’m still thinking about that loss in the Grand Final to Brisbane which didn’t sit well. It’s time for a little bit of revenge,” he declared.

“That’s the way I go into the game anyway. It was very disappointing.”

Santalab’s teammate and Wanderers captain Nikolai Topor-Stanley said the 2-1 Grand Final loss to Brisbane left a bitter taste in his mouth.

“There are only a few of us left from that game… that was a game I felt we

were largely in control of and a game that I truly believe we were going to win in extra time, but it wasn’t to be,” he said.

The 31-year-old former Socceroo, who has been a member of Western Sydney’s two previous A-League finals campaigns, believes boasting players with ‘big match’ experience will give them an advantage come Sunday.

“We’ve got players who have played at very high levels right around the world, not just in [A-League] finals,” ToporStanley said.

“We’ve got to draw on that experience and the cool, calm heads, and really execute the game plan properly.”

Roar isn’t something to be desired, with Brisbane winning two of the three clashes this season.

“I don’t look at past history against teams; this is a fresh start, this is a new game and we’ll be looking to put in our best performance,” he said.

Santalab and midfielder Mitch Nichols were at the semi final launch this week with A-League boss Damien De Bohun and the Championship trophy.

Fittingly, the popular goalscoring duo didn’t want to get too close to the trophy.

“I just want to lift it in a couple of weeks,” Santalab said.

ormer McCarthy Catholic College school teacher turned NRL referee Grant Atkins has released a popular podcast series highlighting the incredible achievements of western Sydney locals on the big stage.

Coinciding with his Masters in Communications degree, the Penrith local created the Pride of the West Podcast series to get an insight into the lives and upbringing of some of western Sydney’s most well-known faces.

Speaking with the Weekender, Atkins said he wanted to create something unique for the people of western Sydney and beyond to enjoy. “Apart from a recent media campaign, there’s nothing really out there recognising the achievements of former and current western Sydney locals,� he said. “People from western Sydney are proud of where they come from and are happy to share their story of growing up in the area. “The podcast doesn’t just cover sports stars but people from a range of fields.�

He said there had been a few standout interviews so far. “Mark Geyer was very good,� he said. “I’ve known ‘MG’ for 15 years and knew he was very proud and open about where he comes from.

“Chris Bath was another interesting one as she is a great mouthpiece for western Sydney, as is Jason Dundas who was a very good interview as well.�

Kuprowsky was also the head coach of the Sydney Ice Dogs from 2010-2014.

After finishing the 2015 season in second last place, Kuprowsky believes a host of fresh faces as well as competition for spots will propel the Bears up the standings in 2016. “The team is quite different this year, there’s a lot of new faces,� he said. “It’s a dynamic squad, we have many players battling for their positions. “Players will need to play at their best if they want to get selected and it’s showing right now with players giving 100 per cent for the entire game.�

For the second straight year the Bears will call Penrith Ice Palace home. The Jamisontown venue will host 12 Bears games this season plus the 2016 AIHL All Stars Weekend.

Kuprowsky said Penrith are well and truly getting behind ice hockey. “Having the All Star game in Penrith and winning the Wilson Cup last weekend will no doubt contribute to getting more people to games this season,� he said.

This Sunday at 5pm the Sydney Bears will take on the Canberra Brave at Penrith Ice Palace in the AIHL season opener.

Kuprowsky said it would be a tough fight against one of the competition’s top teams.

Swimming Local swimmers make a splash at events in Adelaide NATHAN TAYLOR

ocal teenage swim star Sarah Keenahan did the Nepean Aquatic Centre Swim Club incredibly proud last week after performing valiantly in the Paralympic Games selection trials in Adelaide.

The 15-year-old Leonay resident took part in a number of events in the S6 category including the 50m, 100m and 400m freestyle as well as the 50m and 100m backstroke.

Needing to finish first or second in each of her events’ finals to make the cut for Rio, Sarah wasn’t quite fast enough to make this year’s Australian Paralympic team despite enjoying a number of personal best times.

Nepean Aquatic Centre Swim Club head coach Jackie Barck said Sarah learned plenty of valuable lessons during the national competition.

“Sarah enjoyed the experience of her first Australian team selection event and is using the experience to learn what is needed to be the best in her classification,” she said.

The lessons learned will be put to good use, according to Ms Barck.

“Sarah learned to race hard and recover

well between each event, plus all the things that need to be in place to support an athlete, like sacrifices and work ethic required, to make the cut,” she said.

Meanwhile, fellow swimmers from Nepean Aquatic Centre Swim Club are also celebrating after holding their own against strong competition at the Australian Age National Swimming Championships in Adelaide earlier this month.

13-year-old Mulgoa swimmer Jack Benson surpassed all expectations by making the finals of both the 50m and 100m U13 freestyle events, and placing fourth and fifth in the country respectively.

12-year-old teammate Kody Stark-Szarbo placed 12th in the same age group in the 50m freestyle, with both boys posting strong personal best times.

The local club’s female swimmers also did themselves proud with outstanding results by 16-year-old Glenmore Park swimmer Abbi Williams, 15-year-old Winmalee resident Arizona Staley and 13-year-old Glenmore Park local Lauren Wolsey.

RUGBY: The Penrith Emus have suffered their fifth consecutive defeat, this time thrashed by Manly 79-5 in Round 5 of the Shute Shield competition.

Manly lead 57-0 at half-time before the Emus became a little bit more competitive in the second half, scoring a try and conceding just 22 points.

This Saturday afternoon the Penrith Emus will play their first televised game in years when they travel to Concord Oval to battle West Harbour.

Bears ready to roar ew Sydney Bears head coach Ron Kuprowsky believes last weekend’s pre-season tournament win will put his side in good stead heading into the 2016 Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) season.

The Bears, who play out of Penrith Ice Palace, defeated crosstown rivals the Sydney Ice Dogs 3-1 in the Wilson Cup final last Saturday.

Speaking with the Weekender, Kuprowsky said the Wilson Cup victory was the first piece of silverware for the club since 2008.

“It was a long time coming for the boys and everyone was happy about that one,” he said.

“The other teams involved in the tournament – Sydney Ice Dogs and Newcastle North Stars – were without their top imports while we were missing our top Australian players who are competing in Mexico.

“Overall, it was a great atmosphere at the Ice Palace and everyone had fun.”

Previously an assistant coach at the Bears, Kuprowsky takes over the reigns from former coach Vladimir Rubes who stepped down last October due to family commitments.

Fun follows reflection fter the Dawn Service, ANZAC Day events will be held at clubs and pubs around Penrith, with two-up and live bands the main features of the schedule.

Penrith RSL will be holding events all day starting with breakfast, which will be served at Star Buffet following the Dawn Service.

Two-up will be played from 1pm to 4pm at the Legends Sports Lounge and there will also be a full line-up of live entertainment with Band Down Under on at 9am, Jack Horner at 12.30pm and Paper Hearts at 6pm. Maze Cafe and Star Buffet will be open for lunch and dinner.

At Penrith Panthers Leagues Club two-up will be held in the Evan Theatre from 1pm to 4pm, with gold coin donations going to Panthers on the Prowl. Mark Travers will be providing live entertainment

McCarthy Catholic College ANZAC Day Commemoration ‘The ANZAC legacy, created by the courage and determination of those who landed and fought at Gallipoli, came to shape the way we perceive ourselves as a nation..’

interest in our commemoration was the partial re-enactment of a cricket match played on 7 May 1918 while a group of young solders were resting away from the front line.

These were opening lines of the ceremony where McCarthy Catholic College commemorated ANZAC Day with a whole school service on the last day of Term One.

The Field Service Notebook of a young soldier, who is a distant relative of a McCarthy staff member, even lists the batting order of the game. He was tragically killed some five months later.

During the commemoration, students acknowledged the sacrifices made not only at Gallipoli, but also in conflicts around the world since that time. They particularly acknowledged the contribution made by Indigenous Australians.

Our own McCarthy Cricket team’s re-enactment brought home the tragic loss of life as the narrator read out what had happened to each of those cricket players during, or shortly after the war, and the team members quietly put down their bats and solemnly walked away.

As always our student leaders and our cadets ably supported our service. Our service was immediately followed by a fitting tribute to our principal Mrs Robyn Medddows, who retired on that day. We wish Ms Meddows all Australian soldiers have, throughout history, used sport to keep up the very best in her retirement and thank her for all she has done in the morale and distract themselves from the horrors of war. Public transport is the way to go if you’re heading to the Sydney CBD xtra public transport services will be running for the ANZAC Day Dawn Service and March in the Sydney CBD on Monday.

Early morning trains will run across much of the network – including on the Western and Blue Mountains Lines.

“Trains will arrive in the city in plenty of time for the Dawn Service, which starts at 4.30am at the Cenotaph in Martin Place,” said a spokesperson for Transport Management Centre.

Motorists are also advised to avoid the city on ANZAC Day, with roads to start closing from 2am.

Plenty of traditions surround an important day for Australia NZAC Day is a national public holiday of remembrance each year as it marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps with several traditions carried out on April 25 to mark ANZAC Day. ANZAC Day commemorations were first held on April 25, 1916, with the day becoming a national day of commemoration in the 1920s for the more than 60,000 Australians who had died during the war.

There are two ways in which people remember the ANZACs. Commemorative services, known as Dawn Services, are held across the nation at dawn, the time of the original landing at Gallipoli in 1915.

Commemorative ceremonies are more formal, and are held at war memorials around the country.

With the coming of the Second World War, ANZAC Day also served to commemorate the lives of Australians who died in that war with the meaning of ANZAC Day today including the remembrance of all Australians killed in military operations.

The men and women who are currently serving are also recognised.

Probably one of the more known traditions on ANZAC day is the playing of ‘The Last Post’ – a bugle call in military tradition that marks the phases of the day.

It is during ‘The Last Post’ that people bow their heads for one minute of silence to respect and remember those who have died during their military service.

Another well-known formality during the Dawn Service is the reading of The Ode that ends in ‘we will remember them’.

The verse read out is from For the Fallen, a poem by the English poet and writer Laurence Binyon, with the verse becoming The League Ode in the 1920s.

Another popular tradition on ANZAC Day is playing ‘two-up’ at local RSL clubs and pubs.

The game marks a shared experience with diggers through the ages and involves a designated ‘spinner’ throwing two coins or pennies into the air. Players gamble on whether the coins will fall with both heads up, both tails up, or with one coin a head and one a tail known as ‘odds’.

The game is only legal on ANZAC Day.
