hese are the plans that Penrith has been waiting for, that show eight to 10 restaurants with alfresco dining adjoining the existing Coffee Club along the Nepean River. Two local bothers, Charles and Steven Sentas, lodged a development application to Penrith City Council on Monday to build a dining experience that will attract customers and business from far and wide.

“We’ve always wanted to put a few more restaurants here, and it will be a great thing because it’s a great spot,” Charles said.

The nine-acre property has been owned by the Sentas family since the 1960s, and will provide enough space for up to 10 restaurants, an arcadestyle thoroughfare and ample parking.

“We’ve got 38,000 square metres of parking on the back, so anyone who wants to come here, it’ll be easy,” he said.

The brothers agreed that it’s still early stages but hope to see brand name businesses including seafood, a steakhouse, European and Thai, with one lucky restaurant being able to have their own upstairs dining area.

Aside from the time it takes for Council to approve the development application, Charles said he expects the buildings to be standing as soon as possible.

“It all depends what happens with Council, nothing’s done until it’s stamped and as soon as it’s stamped from there we sign up the contracts for each shop,” he said.

Time to tackle ‘ice’ crisis head-on Forum at Kingswood the first step in fighting back against an epidemic that is ruining lives DALE DRINKWATER

he community has had enough and has banded together to fight back against the increasing epidemic of the drug ‘ice’.

Federal Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott addressed an ‘ice forum’ at the Kingswood Neighbourhood Centre on Tuesday, where people from all corners of society joined forces to try to find a solution. “[Penrith LGA is] a family community, that’s not what this community is about so this is our way of fighting back,” Ms Scott said.

In the last two years, the use and possession of methamphetamines such as ‘ice’ that causes psychosis and long term psychological issues is up 24.2 per cent in the Penrith LGA, higher than the state increase of 16.1 per cent.

“The fact that I can get all these [people] in a room together wanting to talk... just goes to show that we have a community that’s just not going to accept these numbers,” Ms Scott said.

“So today is about trying to find a solution, and my role... is to facilitate the process and then be able to report back to Government as to how we move forward.”

The overarching response from the forum was that it will take a whole community and many organisations to nut out the epidemic at all levels, not just Government or police.

The Nepean Community Neighbourhood Centre’s Joy Impionbato explained how childhood trauma is a direct link to drug and alcohol issues, and highlighted the need for rehabilitation.

“There’s vulnerable kids that are not getting the attachment from their parents... it’s repeating the cycle for potential use of drugs and ice,” she said.

“We want to see faster responses for detox and rehab, and would love to be able to rehome them in good areas but we can’t do that.”

Superintendent Greg Peters agreed that mental health is a huge factor in the epidemic and said the police need assistance from all community organisations to overcome the issue.

“We run both covert and overt operations, and operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but drugs is a faceless crime,” he said.

“I could put my head in the sand and say it’s not a problem, but it’s an epidemic and unless we grasp it now it’s going to take over.”

Dumb criminals who will bring a smile in a tough week for us all In a week in which we lost the legendary Richie Benaud, and mourned the tragic and senseless murder of Stephanie Scott in Leeton, I thought it’d be nice to look at the lighter side of the news this week.

Criminals aren’t always the brightest crayon in the box, as a few examples this week have shown.

Take the case of 22-year-old David Lingafelter for example.

He was arrested in the US when authorities discovered him hiding behind a dumpster near a grocery store. Lingafelter was on the run after he held up a Subway restaurant.

During the Subway hold up, something in particular stood out – Lingafelter stuffed the money he was taking into a sack marked with a “$� sign.

Police said that the money bag was tied to the front of the suspect’s pants when he was arrested.

Smart guy who has watched too many cartoons, clearly.

Then there’s the case of Larry McElroy, also from the US, who accidentally shot his motherin-law with a 9mm pistol when he was trying to shoot an armadillo.

The armadillo died from the shot, but the bullet ricocheted off the animal, hit a fence and went into the back door of his mother-in-law’s mobile home. Then it went through the recliner where the 74-year-old woman was sitting and into her back.

She will recover, but the small talk over Mother’s Day lunch next month may be a little awkward.

A little closer to home, in Melbourne, four men have been caught on CCTV robbing a service station and filling a doona cover with their loot of stolen cigarettes, before spilling it as they fled in a car.

They filled the doona cover with so many cigarettes that the loot didn’t fit into the boot of the car, nor the front seat.

Mother’s Day lunch may be a little bit awkward

Next, we all get upset and a little frustrated when we get the wrong order from a takeaway restaurant.

But Shaneka Torres took things a little too far when McDonald’s gave her a bacon cheeseburger without bacon in it in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

She first complained when the tasty treat arrived without bacon and was told she could have a free one next time she visited.

A few hours later she returned to the drive-thru for her free burger but was again given an inadequate amount of bacon.

At this point Torres pulled a pistol out of her purse and opened fire. Nobody was injured.

But the home of weird news and dumb criminals really is the UK. After all, one of the big stories over there this week was the theft of frozen bulls’ semen worth £47,000.

Good luck taking that down to the nearest pawn shop.

And another thing...

The story on our front page this week is significant news for Penrith and its future.

A restaurant strip is without doubt the missing piece of the puzzle when it comes to Penrith’s growth into a city of choice in relation to both living and entertainment.

While there’s obviously many hurdles to jump yet, including approval from Council, such an initiative should be celebrated.

Penrith’s population and culture will change dramatically in the coming years.

Penrith needs restaurants and entertainment options that cater for this evolution.

ere’s a lesson this teenage boy won’t forget in a hurry: never leave the stove unattended while cooking in the kitchen – especially when playing video games.

Emergency services were called to a home on Lilac Place in Jamisontown on Monday at around 9.00am after a 13-year-old boy left his toast in the grill unattended, causing the stove to catch fire. Paramedics assessed him for minor smoke inhalation.

He suffered no other injuries with the fire contained to the oven and stove area only.

It is understood the boy was playing video games while monitoring the toast cooking before he noticed the smoke.

He apparently rushed across the road to a neighbour’s house, but the neighbour wasn’t home, according to Fire & Rescue NSW crews.

Another neighbour was able to ring 000 and emergency services arrived at the scene quickly.

Station officer at Regentville Fire Station, Philip Marsh, said parents should take this as a warning.

ulgoa’s choice of re-electing Tanya Davies as their MP has landed them with a member who will also serve as a Parliamentary Secretary for two portfolios and two ministers.

Ms Davies has acquired the role of Parliamentary Secretary for Youth Affairs and Homelessness, and will work with Minister for Ageing, John Ajaka and Minister for Family and Community Services, Brad Hazzard.

Mr Hazzard said he was looking forward to working in what he calls “The Brad and Tanya Team” and he was delighted to have Ms Davies supporting him.

“It’s wonderful. Between the two of us, we’ve had a lot of experience and I think it will help us to collectively work out how we should be trying to do a better job for people who are vulnerable,” he said.

“We are not going to be able to stop all the terrible things that can happen but between the two of us we can do what we can.”

Mr Hazzard said Ms Davies will add a fantastic dimension to the role with her experience in western Sydney and down to earth attitude.

“Western Sydney is a fantastic spot, but

it’s great to have someone who knows western Sydney like the back of her hand,” he said.

Ms Davies admitted the additional responsibility will consume more of her time but said it was a very important role and one opportunity she couldn’t pass up.

“You are talking to a woman and we are very gifted at multitasking,” Ms Davies joked.

“This is where we are really dealing one on one with some of our most vulnerable in our community... and there’s opportunities to assist Brad in being a part of meetings, meeting the staff, meeting case workers and listening to what’s happening on the ground.”

Ms Davies said she has not yet met with Mr Ajaka to discuss her responsibilities for her youth affairs portfolio.

Meanwhile, Labor Member for Londonderry, Prue Car has also secured a role as a Shadow Parliamentary Secretary and said she was honoured to be appointed to assist the NSW Shadow Cabinet.

“I’m looking forward to using this role to ensure western Sydney has a strong voice in the Opposition and the Parliament,” she said.

Ms Car was also officially declared as State Member for Londonderry after winning last month’s State Election.

Glenmore Park: Teenagers caught by police helicopter

St Marys: Female police officer injured while making arrest

Two 18-year-old men allegedly attempted to steal an amount of flooring material from a work site in Glenmore Park.

The pair drove to the site at 10.30pm on Saturday, April 11 but were caught by PolAir. Penrith Police issued the men a field court attendance notice after they were taken to Penrith Police Station.

Charged with stealing and trespassing, they will appear in Penrith Local Court on May 6.

Police allege a woman elbowed a female officer in the face and broke her tooth after resisting arrest in St Marys.

On Monday, April 13, at about 9pm, a 35-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man were charged at a house on Kurrajong Avenue, a house they had been evicted from on April 9. They were both issued with a court attendance notice for the offence of enter enclosed lands.

The 35-year-old allegedly kicked the female senior constable before elbowing her in the mouth.

They were both refused bail and were due to appear before Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, April 14. The female police officer was treated at Nepean Hospital and will require dental treatment.

St Clair: Dramatic arrest at airport over murder A man has been charged with murder after an incident in St Clair on Tuesday.

About 12.20pm on Tuesday, emergency services were called to Wills Glen, near the intersection of Barrallier Way, after reports a man had been injured.

Ambulance paramedics treated the man, but he died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified.

Police from St Marys Local Area Command have formed Strike Force Neumayer to investigate the incident. They are being assisted by detectives from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad.

Following inquiries, investigators arrested a 31-year-old man at Sydney Airport about 6am on Wednesday.

He was taken to Mascot Police Station, where he was charged with murder and refused bail to appear in Waverley Local Court.

The investigation continues.

Penrith: Woman busted using fake prescription at pharmacy A 27-year-old woman was arrested and charged after she attempted to use a fake prescription at a pharmacy on High Street in Penrith.

On April 7, the Penrith resident gave the doctor’s prescription to the pharmacy, who thought it was suspicious and the police were then called.

She was arrested and charged with using a forged prescription.

She is due in Penrith Local Court on April 28.

Police advise anyone who notices suspicious activity to contact them or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

In accordance with the Protection of the Environment Operations (Clean Air) Regulation 2002, Penrith City Council hereby grants general approval for burning in the open of dead and dry vegetation that originated on the property where the burning is to be carried out. This approval is restricted to the suburbs nominated above and to single land parcels that are 4,000 sqm (one acre) or greater in area.

If your property falls within NSW Fire Brigade area, a Fire Permit must be obtained from the NSW Fire Brigade prior to the commencement of the burn.

This approval is granted subject to the provisions of the Protection of the Environment Operations (Clean Air) Regulation 2002 and the following conditions: 1. Only dead and dry vegetation, where the vegetation originally grew on the same property shall be burnt in accordance with the Rural Fire Service ‘Standards for Pile Burning’ June 2003; rfs.nsw.gov.au 2. All ďŹ res are to be pile burns where the pile is not to exceed 2 metres in length or width, and must not be greater than 1.5 metres high. Any logs over 150mm in diameter are not be added to the pile.

3. Burning under this approval must at all times be carried out by such practicable means as are necessary to prevent or minimise air pollution. Burning should not be carried out during periods of high wind or when the weather conditions are likely to cause smoke impacts on sensitive receptors such as schools, nursing homes, childcare centres or other residences.

4. All reasonable measures should be taken to ensure that the material being burnt is not wet or green.

5. Only dead and dry vegetation is to be burnt. Plastics, rubber, chemical and pesticide containers, and the following speciďŹ c prohibited articles are not be burnt: a) Tyres, plastic coated wire, paint/solvent containers and residues b) Timber treated with copper chromium arsenate (CCA) or pentachlorophenol (PCP) or painted timber c) Grass clippings and leaves are not considered suitable due to the excessive smoke and alternative methods of disposal should be sought 6. All ďŹ res are to be a minimum distance of 20 metres from any building, areas of natural vegetation and 10 metres from all property boundaries.

7. In the event of a Total Fire Ban being declared this approval is suspended. Any existing ďŹ re is to be extinguished and is not to be recommenced until the Total Fire Ban is lifted.

8. In the event of a No Burn Day being declared by the Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC) this approval is suspended for the duration of the declaration. When a No Burn Notice is issued, it applies to the lighting of new ďŹ res in the declared areas. On the completion of the burn, the burnt area must be maintained in a condition that minimises or prevents the emission of dust and prevents sediment or ash from ďŹ res being washed from the area into surrounding waterways (natural or constructed) including creeks, stormwater drainage lines, dams or ponds.

This approval remains in force from 1 April–30 September 2015 or until the commencement of the Bush Fire Season if declared earlier.

This approval does not apply to: 1. The burning of vegetation resulting from land clearing undertaken without development consent. Vegetation arising from land clearing can only be burnt in accordance with this general approval and if allowed under a development consent issued by Council; 2. The burning of packaging associated with agricultural operations.

3. Ecological/bush regeneration burns which are carried out to destroy infestations of noxious weeds, or to clear land for native species regeneration. Prior to any burning of vegetation on any property where there are known threatened species, populations, ecological communities of any known Aboriginal relics, individuals and organisations must obtain advice from the DECC contact below. Individuals and organisations that wish to carry out these burns should apply to the Manager Metropolitan Projects and Support, Department of Environment and Climate Change (NSW), PO Box 668, Parramatta NSW 2124.

Conducting open burning that does not comply with the conditions of this approval may result in an on the spot penalty notice of $500 for an individual or $1,000 for a corporation. In the event of prosecution for such an offence the maximum penalty is $5,500 for an individual and $11,000 for a corporation.

s After the success of the inaugural IRONNMAN 70.3 Western Sydney event last November, organisers have confirmed the event will return to Penrith in 2015.

The main race will be held in and directly around the Sydney International Regatta Centre (SIRC) on Sunday, 29 November.

The course, which includes the iconic Penrith Lakes and boasts spectacular views of the mountains, was praised by participants last year.

Last year this event attracted nearly two thousand competitors to the city and injected more than $500,000 into the local economy.

The IRONKIDS event will also return in 2015. This event is for children aged between 7–13 years and will be held at the SIRC on Saturday 28 November.

n a different kind of Penrith progression, several events were held across the city to place pressure on the Coalition Government to allow a free vote on same sex marriage.

Last weekend, a community forum was held in Kingswood where locals came together to speak up on the issue that Australian Marriage Equality (AME) said only a small number statistically oppose.

Deputy Director of AME, Ivan Hinton, said the #EqualityCalling campaign is about using heartfelt personal stories to change the minds of our decision makers.

“It is about telling personal stories that can open the hearts and minds of MPs locally and on ‘the hill’,” he said.

“The Federal Coalition coming to power didn’t entirely suggest marriage equality was off the table, but instead brought new challenges.

“When we started this campaign less than a year ago, we identified that we needed 25 MPs to swing their view in order to get the vote, and we are now down to just 15.”

Shelley Argent from Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays said she has noticed a change in the attitude of Parliament over the last 10 years.

The pair are funding the project privately without Council, and Steven said they are very confident it will be an application that Council will approve.

“We don’t think we will have any problem with Council, we’ve done all the appropriate acoustics, roads, engineers, everything,” he said.

“The plans show seven or eight restaurants along the front, all done properly, and there will be access for the disabled

and for the whole community to be able to come.

“From there it’s the normal process whether it takes three months, six months, nine months, as soon as the process is done we want to go ahead.”

Applicant for the development, Warwick Stimson, from Stimson & Baker Planning said it will coincide with Council’s 2013 project, ‘Our River Masterplan’ that determines appropriate activities around the river.

“This project is anticipated to be a catalyst in stimulating additional interest and development adjoining public and recreational activities along the river,” he said.

Locals gathered to show support for marriage equality “Now they are becoming very welcoming because they are waking up to the fact that their electorates feel very strongly about it,” she said.

Recent polls show that around 70 per cent of Australians support marriage equality, with over 80 per cent of 18 to 25-year-olds supporting it and just 12 per cent actively against it.

Former Greens Candidate for Londonderry Shane Gorman said the Lindsay electorate was targeted as its Federal Member, Fiona Scott was identified

by AME as likely to vote in favour of marriage equality.

Last Saturday, the campaign held a workshop in Cranebrook and, on Sunday at Tench Reserve, 100 people signed postcards asking Ms Scott to request a free vote on marriage equality.

Australians at War kiosk Council this week launched its Australians at War kiosk which is on display in Penrith Library.

The launch acknowledged the Centenary of the Gallipoli campaign and offers broader recognition of the five year commemoration of Australia’s involvement in the First World War. The kiosk gives users an insight into Australia’s involvement in military engagements and peace time exercises from 1914 to today.

The touchscreen technology allows users of all ages to find out more about the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women over the last 100 years, with an emphasis on where, when and why conflicts occurred.

Soon this display will include a local focus. From next month, users will be able to hear interviews with prominent businessman David Trist sharing his experiences as a World War Two soldier. oming off the back of a win at the Champions of the West awards night, Andrea Turner-Boys is looking forward to what comes next for her Penrith business Women With Altitude.

Ms Turner-Boys’ business is about connecting women to other businesses in the hope they can be inspired and gain valuable business information.

A talk, run like a mentoring program, is held every second Thursday in Penrith to offer advice to women about the business industry.

“Women need to stop tearing each other down and start building each other up – they need to counteract that nastiness,” Ms Turner-Boys said.

The business started from the idea of Ms Turner-Boys wanting to know other women and to have a regular networking system where they can all interact together.

She began her business on the side of her main job, working at another small business, from 2003 to 2007, running it as a not-for-profit.

Women With Altitude hold several events in a year, with business owners coming along as guest speakers.

One of the main events Ms Turner-Boys recommends attending is titled ‘Shake It Up’, to be held on May 7 from 9am.

The theme for this event is leaders and trailblazers where three leaders in busi-

ness will be sharing their stories of how they shook up their industries and faced challenges.

Shake It Up will be held at the Tattersalls Function Centre, The White Room at 510 High Street, Penrith.

War contributions recognised at new kiosk at Penrith Library

David Trist and Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler officially open the kiosk enrith is quickly becoming the home of ANZAC Day commemorations in 2015.

Poppy Park has become a must-see tribute to our fallen heroes in the Penrith CBD, and thousands are expected to gather at Memory Park next Saturday for the traditional dawn service.

Now Penrith Library has launched its very own special tribute – the Australians at War Kiosk.

This special interactive display features high quality videos on Australia’s

involvement in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam and of course modern warfare.

The kiosk will also feature, in the near future, information specific to Penrith’s contributions to the war effort across various theatres of war.

It will also highlight prominent local businessman David Trist.

Mr Trist was interviewed about his experience as a soldier in World War II. The Australians at War Kiosk is now available to view at Penrith City Library.

Smooth transition for Penrith despite overhaul DALE DRINKWATER

he support to primary healthcare in the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD) will only see minor changes with the introduction of Primary Health Networks (PHN).

The sigh of relief comes from Wentworth Healthcare Limited, the business that currently trades as Nepean Blue Mountains Medicare Local (NBMML), after the Federal Government announced it was selected to operate as the region’s PHN. NBMML’s acting CEO, Lizz Reay, said at the end of this financial year, Medicare Locals will no longer be funded by the Government and new organisations will take over, but luckily for this region, it will be the same company.

“It was actually a fairly simple transition where us as a company who had been running the Medicare Local said ‘we don’t want to close, we want to keep doing our good work’,” she said.

“So we put in an application so that we could become the new PHN and that’s happened, our organisation is the new PHN.” In January, Wentworth Healthcare Limited submitted a tender to become the PHN for Penrith, the Blue Mountains,

Hawkesbury and Lithgow, and its successful selection will make the transition smoother for those using and working in primary healthcare.

In other regions, Medicare Locals face changes to their boundaries under the new PHNs, but NBMML boundaries will remain the same, matching with the NBMLHD. “Our area is the same, a lot of the functions of what the PHNs do is very similar to what Medicare Locals do so we think we can transition over very easily,” Ms Reay said.

“The positive thing is that for our region we will have continuity of service, for other areas I can’t comment because they are going through a very different thing to us.”

NBMML Board Chair, and GP in the Blue Mountains, Dr Andrew Knight, said he welcomed the decision as primary healthcare needs to be invested in for an efficient and effective health system.

“Our local GPs and other primary care providers are the key and our job will be to support them as they serve the people of our region,” he said.

“NBMML is widely recognised as a highperforming Medicare Local and we are focused on continuing that success as we transition to become a PHN.”

COUNCIL SNAPSHOT Council has made an application for $60,000 to the NSW Lifetime Care and Support Authority and Arts NSW for their Arts and Disability project initiative. If successful, the funding will go toward a new program named No Boundaries Evolution, that builds on previous arts and multimedia initiatives for people with disabilities. For participation in this project, Council will target individuals who have suffered a major disability as a result of a motor vehicle accident. Council hopes to facilitate opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in the community as artists and creators, as part of Council’s Penrith Inclusion Plan – People with Disability. Council endorsed the funding application for the project unanimously, and with no discussion.

Nepean Blue Mountains Medicare Local’s Acting CEO, Lizz Reay

Council has appointed Alison McLaren to the Penrith Performing and Visual Arts (PPVA) Board.

Ms McLaren will join the board of 15 members, that consists of four Councillors, the General Manager and 10 directors separate from Council.

The position on the Board became available with the resignation of Barbara Magee at a time when the PPVA urgently needed a full Board.

Normally, the Board would wait until

their next board meeting, which in this case is April 22. However, Board Chairman Peter Anderson considered it urgent as the Board is currently undertaking work on their strategic planning for the next three years.

Mayor Ross Fowler said the reason for the urgent appointment is that, “The Joan is putting grant applications to the State and formulating its future, and wants a full board”. Ms McLaren is currently a strategist for Urban Growth.

Council has made a submission to the Local Government Remuneration Tribunal requesting be regarded as a “Major City” Council. Every three years, the Tribunal reviews what ‘category’ Councils are in and thus determines the level of fees payable to its Mayors and Councillors.

Penrith City Council is categorised at a “Metropolitan Major” Council, one category down from that of Parramatta and Newcastle Councils of “Major City”. A report to Council stated that both categories are basically the same in terms of money to Councillors, but Penrith Council believes its role as a regional city gives reason to be recognised as a “Major City” Council. Council will now wait for the Tribunal to make its decision before further reports are made.

he voice of cricket has been silenced.

Richie Benaud, who was born in Penrith in 1930, sadly passed away last Friday after battling cancer. He was 84-years-old.

Benaud played 63 Tests for Australia, making his Test debut against the West Indies in 1952. He played his last Test in 1964 but it was in the commentary box where Benaud became an Australian institution.

As part of the Wide World of Sports commentary team, Benaud became a household name – and probably the most imitated voice in world sport.

Channel Nine was Benaud’s spiritual home and network boss David Gyngell paid tribute to the commentary giant.

“Richie Benaud’s passing has robbed us not only of a national treasure, but a lovely man,” he said.

“Richie earned the profound and lasting respect of everyone across the world of cricket and beyond – first as an outstanding player and captain, then as an incomparable commentator, and through it all as a wonderful human being.

“Richie is a true legend not only to all the people who knew him, but to the many millions who didn’t. Which speaks volumes. He’s been part of the Australian psyche.

“Since way back in 1977 Richie has been a much loved member of the Nine family.

More than that, he sat at the head of our table. We shall miss him dearly, but we’ll forever treasure his indelible memory and all the marvellous values for which he stood.”

Nine’s Head of Sport, Steve Crawley, also expressed his sadness.

“You didn’t have to know Richie to love him. Everything about him. Best in the business bar none,” he said.

“We will miss him the way you miss loved ones. And at the same time we will thank our lucky stars he came our way at all.”

Benaud’s father Louis played for Penrith in Sydney Grade Cricket, and gained attention when he took all 20 wickets in a match against St Marys.

Penrith Mayor, Ross Fowler said it was an extremely sad time.

“Richie Benaud is among a growing group of exceptional sports people that have called Penrith home,” he said.

“On behalf of my fellow Councillors and the community of Penrith, I’d like to offer our deepest sympathy to Richie’s wife Daphne and his family.”

Lindsay MP Fiona Scott said Penrith had lost one of its favourite sons.

“He was an ambassador to sport, a legend of the game, a gentleman in life and a person who transcended his beloved cricket, that touched all Australians,” she said.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott said an “Australian icon” had died.

“While many Australians only know Richard Benaud as the voice of cricket, we should not forget that in his day he was a cricketer with few equals. It was why he was so insightful as a commentator.

“I extend my condolences and the condolences of the Australian people, to his wife Daphne and his family and friends.”

Penrith paid tribute to Mr Benaud at Pepper Stadium last Saturday night, with a rousing round of applause from the

crowd and players prior to the NRL match between Penrith and Manly.

The local tributes will continue today when the annual Penrith Cricket Club Captain’s Lunch is held.

Mr Benaud was a guest of the lunch in 2011.

“We were blessed to have Richie speak at one of our lunches a few years ago and it’s a day that stands out for me and many others,” said Penrith Cricket Club President, Paul Goldsmith.

“On a baking hot day he did not miss a beat, he engaged everyone in the room

with his humour and energy, and it was an absolute pleasure to be there. We will miss him.

“Our thoughts are with the Benaud family at this difficult time and in particular his brother John, who we have a close friendship with via his nearly 40 year association with our club. The game of cricket has lost a true gentleman and icon of Australian sport.”

The Benaud family was offered a State funeral to farewell the sporting icon, but it was declined. A private service was expected to be held this week.

National Youth Week It’s fitting that this year, the theme of National Youth Week (10-19 April) is “It starts with us”.

We are all responsible for looking after our own mental health and wellbeing – and we should be keeping a watchful eye on how people around us are travelling – especially young people. The most recent Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show that in 2013, we lost 348 young people (aged 15 to 24) to suicide in one year. It’s a shocking fact that suicide remains the biggest killer of young Australians every year.

Twice as many young people die as a result of suicide than as a result of car accidents. Further research suggests that three in four mental health conditions emerge by age 24 and half by age 14. Hope and recovery is possible and support is out there. Young

Councillor gets into the spirit as Mrs Australia Quest finalists visit Penrith to raise cancer awareness DALE DRINKWATER

enrith Councillor Kevin Crameri did what he had to do for a good cause by getting his fingernails painted bright blue earlier this month.

Cr Crameri was at an afternoon tea to welcome national finalists in the Mrs Australia Quest to Penrith last Wednesday, and what a welcome they got.

“I was asked to, so how could I turn down such beautiful women for such a good cause,” Cr Crameri joked.

“I’ll get a bit of ridicule but it’s all very good publicity for the girls who have worked hard and raised money and I wanted to do what I could for them.”

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler and Federal Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott also attended the event at the Council Chambers that was to highlight the organisation’s efforts to raise awareness for ovarian cancer.

“A woman dies every 11 hours from ovarian cancer, and that’s something we really have to do something about,” Cr Fowler said.

“A lot of that happens because a diagnosis comes too late because there isn’t awareness.”

Councillor Kevin Crameri got his fingernails painted by Mrs Australia Quest contestants Ms Scott added that ovarian cancer’s late diagnosis is a common reason for a lot of women that have had ovarian cancer and don’t make it.

“The earlier you can find cancer the better chance you have of survival, and that’s what’s so important about this event,” she said.

“1,400 women in Australia are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year and 1,000 of those will die. It really is known as one of those death sentence cancers.

“There are a lot of women around Australia who can’t enjoy a beautiful afternoon tea like this and it’s our job to spread the message.”

Last Sunday, the National Titles for the Mrs Australia Quest were held at the St Marys Band Club to crown new national title holders for eight different titles.

Two reigning title holders live in the Penrith area, including 29-year-old Ropes Crossing resident Kim Cancellier who won last year’s title of Mrs Global United then went on to win Mrs Global United International.

Ms Cancellier said other than Ovarian Cancer Australia and the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation, there are no other personal awareness programs for ovarian cancer in the country.

“Since I’ve joined the quest [in December 2013] I’ve had a large number of people tell me they had no idea of the symptoms but got checked at the doctor and found out they had the cancer,” she said.

“Many people have said that without this awareness they wouldn’t have known about ovarian cancer.”

he Nepean Art Society will be opening its doors to the public for their annual Autumn Exhibition which will run from Saturday, April 18 to Sunday, April 19.

The exciting local exhibit will feature around 120 paintings from local artists, some of whom are multiple award winners.

The works will be on display and for sale.

Nepean Art Society President, Joe Cartwright, said the Society has a great mix of members from the local area and beyond.

“Most of our members come from the Nepean, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury areas and others from as far afield as Sutherland shire, the inner city and the northern suburbs,” Mr Cartwright said.

“Among them are Julie Simmons, who is the current Combined Art Societies of Sydney (CASS) Artist of the Year.”

errington McDonald’s is the first McDonald’s in western Sydney set to get a shake up with the introduction of the new ‘create your taste’ menu, officially launching on Monday, April 20.

Customers will be able to create their own gourmet meal and choose how they create their burger from a range of new sauces, new types of buns, crispy bacon, guacamole, shaved parmesan, tortilla strips and over 25 other ingredients.

They will use an interactive self-service kiosk to order their meal and will then be seated and have their food brought to them by a McDonald’s hostess.

Operations Supervisor for Garton Group McDonald’s, Jennifer Parfitt, says she looks forward to the new introduction.

“The core menu will still be available but adding the new gourmet option is going to add to the McDonald’s customer service,” she said.

Changes in the menu, the restaurant environment and the service experience is what will give Werrington McDonald’s its overhaul.

“I think it’s a fantastic idea and concept and it will change McDonald’s,” Miss Parfitt said.

epean Blue Mountains Cardiac Support Group (NBMCSG) are holding a barbecue at Nepean Hospital on Saturday, May 9 to raise funds for equipment for the hospital’s Cardiac Rehab Clinic.

The support group’s members are people that have had heart problems in the past, but have overcome their health issues and are now interested in helping those people who are going through the same thing.

Since their inception in 1996, NBMCSG have raised over $250,000, putting that money towards new equipment for the Cardiac Rehab Clinic, when it’s needed.

Secretary for the group, Eddy Crawford, said he is proud to be part of an organisation like NBMCSG. “I think the work we do is absolutely wonderful and I love that I have been able to be a part of it,” he said.

NBMCSG have two volunteers at each rehab session at Nepean Hospital, with a roster system in place for the 25 volunteers.

The group, with 157 members, hold several fundraisers throughout the year including raffles, dinners, social outings and fun auctions.

Researchers at the Musculoskeletal Ageing Research Program (Nepean Hospital) are looking for healthy participants for a blood study (The COPs Study) The study involves some simple questions about your health and, if suitable, we will then take a blood sample.

We aim to recruit participants (male and female) 20 years and older.

Participants need to be in good health.

Participation in this study will involve one visit (one hour).

The group’s most recent purchase was the replacement of an old and damaged exercise bike for the Cardiac Gymnasium where they spent over $3000.

This research study has been approved by the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Human Research Ethics Committee and is being conducted in accordance with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Research Involving Humans (2007).

However, we also all know how hard it is to get free stuff, so Mark Jones from Australian competitions website Win24. com.au has spilled the beans on the best way to win promotions and competitions.

Mr Jones said first of all we can’t ignore the smartest way of winning, and that’s by entering competitions that require at least some, if not a lot of, effort.

“The vast majority of people can’t be bothered,” he said.

“Automatically with the lower probabilities of how many people are going to enter that competition you’ll have a much better chance of winning.”

When entering these skills-based competitions, Mr Jones suggested four key things: 1. Use humour 2. Don’t beg for sympathy 3. It’s no crime to rhyme 4. Mention the product or brand in your entry But, not everyone has the skills, has the time, or could be bothered – and essentially if you work too hard for it, is it really free?

On a smaller scale, Mr Jones suggested to actually enter the competitions that are on the boxes of many of the products we find on our supermarket shelves every day.

“A large proportion of products, I would say 80 per cent, would be offering some

“Most people may notice it but forget it by the time the packet has been ripped open by the kids.”

However, like always, there’s a catch, and Mr Jones said the only way you’re going to win competitions is by entering as many as you can.

“One of my tips, for obvious reasons, would be if you don’t have the time to find and enter competitions, Win24 is a good way to get around that.”

Why the ‘Cow is a Penrith icon We all know the Red Cow Hotel and the pride of place it has in the Penrith CBD, but Jade Aliprandi has discovered the remarkable, long and varied history of the local drinking hole

S

tanding on Station Street and looking at the Red Cow Inn, you will see an old classic Australian pub but if you look a little bit deeper, you might just see the 100 year history the Red Cow carries with it.

Located in the heart of Penrith, the Red Cow Inn used to be passed by those in wagons and coaches as they travelled in and out of the Nepean area.

The idea of the Red Cow was for it to be built across from Penrith Railway Station, a spot which was considered prime real estate in those days.

Thomas Smith built the Red Cow Inn between 1862 and 1863 after success with hotels both in Parramatta and Colyton.

Sometimes called ‘Smith’s Hotel’, the Red Cow Inn was a popular name for hotels in the 19th Century with several other establishments in NSW, England,

Scotland and Ireland by the same name.

The original building was a low and flat roofed brick building but a reconstruction was carried out between 1882 and 1889 that changed the Inn to a double-storey building and a newly refurbished hang out.

In 1894, the license was transferred to Smith’s son, T.R. Smith, who then signed it over to his brother-in-law, William Player, in the same year.

The license was again transferred in 1904 to Arthur Williamson who then leased the premises to Tooth & Co, a large brewer of beer in NSW. Tooth & Co introduced a British concept known as the ‘tied house’ where they lent all or part of the capital for the hotel premises to publicans, conditional on the publican selling their products exclusively.

Williamson is painted onto the verandah fascia with Tooth’s symbol, a white horse, located on the balcony balustrade over.

Williamson’s wife, Sarah Williamson, took over the license in 1909 after his death but then relinquished it to Robert Lack in 1911.

Margaret Lack became the new owner of the Red Cow in 1925 after Robert’s passing, and was set to have a large impact on what the Red Cow was going to feature after the 1930s.

During the war period, Penrith became less of a significant destination, and what was once considered the ‘hot spot’, particularly along the train line where the Red Cow was situated, was now a location people didn’t really consider visiting, or at the very least, pass through. An order was made in 1930 stating the owner, Mrs Lack, had to make improvements to the hotel to maintain the license for the premises.

Amounting to a cost of £1100, work on fencing to the grounds, construction of a water shed, installation of a septic tank and a new iron roof as well as an additional

17 rooms was carried out as per the order requirement.

Hot and cold water was also connected to the bathrooms along with electric lighting, changing the Red Cow in a major way.

The Red Cow Inn was transferred to Noel and Edith Thompson in 1957 after Mrs Lack’s children owned it for a period of time after her passing.

It was at this time that the site was divided into two lots – lot A and lot B – with the Red Cow situated on lot B. In 1965, the Red Cow underwent major reconstruction to the outside of the building, providing it with a modern vibe.

Dallas Golds, who owned the Red Cow from 1972, once said the original building was still intact but that the history still remained, it had just been renovated to provide a modern nature to the hotel.

He also said he was told by a customer of his that in the late 1800s, if anyone was killed on the railway line the corpse was laid out among the billiard tables.

The billiard tables were in a building next to the Red Cow that was potentially part of the hotel, perhaps run as a bar, up until the creation of lot A and lot B. Dallas Golds also converted part of the upstairs to a manager’s residence and lived there with his family for almost 20 years.

From 1987, the hotel went through a variety of new owners including Lend Lease Retail Projects Pty Limited who bought the property as part of the site surrounding the Penrith Plaza, with the potential for future expansion of the site.

It was then transferred to General Property Trust Management Limited (GPT).

From there, the Red Cow was leased to Fohart Property Services Pty Limited who have continued to operate the hotel as a licensed premises.

Over the time of the Red Cow Inn, people have stayed either briefly or overnight and now just even go in for a bite to eat.

The Red Cow Inn was added to the list of potential places of heritage significance in 2002 and still features some of the original structure and fixtures.

The Inn is proud of having “the perfect after work drinks atmosphere”.

They also host functions and events and play their part on ‘Game Days’ as the hotel considers themselves as one of the starting points before heading into the local Panthers game or sporting event.

One of the most recent additions to the Red Cow has been the beer garden.

You can choose what projects to pursue and work in the way that best suits you (and the way you want to). This means that you can make change happen: you don’t have to wait for red tape or for someone else to decide.

2. You get to choose who you work with. You can hire people with strengths that compliment yours and with personalities you know you can work alongside. It is far easier to achieve success with people you connect well with.

3. You can take time off whenever you choose. Yes, I know that there are

deadlines, client requirements and other factors that affect your ability to do this! But essentially, you CAN take a day off, without having to justify it to anyone else.

It was great to hear comments and tips about business owners that are running their own businesses from home flawlessly. Here are some common misconceptions home based business owners should be aware of: • The hours are easy: It is easy to think that running a home based business involves a few hours on the computer in the morning, a nice relaxing lunch, a phone call or two in the afternoon and then an early finish. You have to put in the work.

• Clients won’t take you seriously: Many entrepreneurs worry about the impression their home office has on clients. If your clients have to come to your house, set aside a room for meetings and ensure there aren’t any interruptions. There is always the option of holding the meeting at a café or at a serviced office that you can rent out by the hour. By saving on an office space, you can put that money towards your services. Some big companies are struggling so

compete with them. Use your low overheads to your advantage so you don’t have to pass on those costs.

• You don’t have to worry about health and safety: Fitness and healthy eating is very important. If you are also working in a messy, potentially dangerous home-based office, you risk more than being labelled lazy. Not only is your own health and safety important if you are to keep running your business, but any staff and clients will need to be protected too.

• You will be able to look after your kids and run a business: You will occasionally, if not regularly, need a babysitter for your children. You need the balance as you will need to go out for meetings. Clients will probably start asking questions if you miss or cancel meetings because you need to pick up the kids from school.

• You can sit back and get rich quickly: There are no get rich quick schemes.

You can be successful if you have the right business model. People who are pushed into starting their business because they lost their job or think it will be easy are likely to fall over.

I

f you want proof that a month is a long time in rugby league, you only need to look at the differences between the Penrith and Gold Coast teams that met in round two and the sides that will come up against each other this Saturday at Cbus Super Stadium.

Back on March 14, Penrith thrashed the Titans 40-0.

Jamie Soward and Peter Wallace led the side around the park that day but on Saturday, neither of the dynamic duo will be there. Instead, both will continue to recover from unplanned early season surgery.

Penrith also boasted the experienced centre pairing of Dean Whare and Jamal Idris that day, but will this week line-up with probably the most inexperienced centre pairing in history: Waqa Blake and debutant Robert Jennings.

The Titans were without their biggest

stars, Greg Bird and Dave Taylor, for the game in Bathurst but both will line-up against the Panthers on the weekend.

A strange quirk may see the Panthers and the Titans meeting twice in five weeks but the games will barely resemble each other.

The Panthers got their early season form back on track last Saturday night by defeating lowly Manly 22-12. Regardless of the sloppy performance at times, the win was incredibly important as it avoided a potential fourth straight loss.

The more games Penrith can win with Soward and Wallace off the field, the better. When the pair are reunited before the mid-way point of the season, you would think things would really start to click into gear for the team. Until then, fans will have to put up with a slightly clunky attack, particularly given Api Koroisau and Isaac John wouldn’t have thought in their wildest dreams that they’d be the Panthers first grade halves combination just six or seven weeks into the season.

Combinations take months, if not seasons to develop – Koroisau and John will continue to be a work in progress.

It should not be forgotten that they came up against a quality halves pairing in Daly CherryEvans and Kieran Foran, but continued to outplay them as the game went on.

Unlike in previous weeks, Penrith did enough to stay in the game against Manly even when things weren’t going their way. It ensured that when the Panthers forward pack did start to dominate in the second half, the side was close enough

on the scoreboard to make it matter. It’ll be a similar story against the Titans on Saturday. Apart from the 40-0 thrashing at the hands of Penrith, the Titans haven’t been embarrassed in any of the games they’ve played. In each and every match they’ve played for the 80 minutes, often going down by just a couple of points – the difference in wining or losing literally coming down to the bounce of a ball or a missed tackle here and there.

The biggest challenge confronting Penrith could be in defence. He may not attract headlines, but Elijah Taylor is so critical to Penrith’s success each week – losing him to a knee injury is a massive blow. He has been named to play but there would have to be severe doubt over him taking the field.

This is a dangerous road trip for the Panthers particularly given how good the Titans played last weekend, but a win would be a huge bonus considering the massive injury toll the side is dealing with.

It’s a flip of the coin type match.

a bombshell on Panthers fans when he revealed after the win against Manly that Peter Wallace was facing more than a month on the sidelines. The Panthers skipper underwent surgery this week. I have to shake my head at some fans who have been questioning why both Wallace and Jamie Soward didn’t undergo surgery in the off-season. Obviously, Penrith’s medical team is far more experienced and informed than the Facebook keyboard warriors – I’d rather trust those in the know any day.

is a big blow for the Panthers but it’s also a significant hit for Idris personally. It has been obvious in recent television interviews, including one with Nine News on Monday night in the wake of the injury, that Idris is dealing with some demons off the field. The Panthers know that Idris can be a worry when he’s away from football so I’d tip they’ll be keeping a close eye on him during his recovery.

their pre-match entertainment focus to the precinct areas rather than on the field at home games, but it leaves those in the grandstands (many of whom have watched earlier grades) twiddling their thumbs for about half an hour. Cheerleaders, little cheerleaders, a few ads and the team lists – that’s pretty much the constant schedule of pre-match entertainment. At half-time, it’s not all that much better – though the ‘Drumstruck’ performance at the Cowboys game was a welcome shake-up. Last weekend against Manly, part of the half-time fun was Coca Cola giving away eight gift bags. Yes, eight. The Panthers will make up for lost ground at the next home game against the Sharks – I’m told the ANZAC service will be something very special.

Matt’s staying where he is Matt Moylan says he won’t be moving into the halves just yet

enrith fullback Matt Moylan has praised the club’s makeshift halves in Isaac John and Apisai Koroisau for getting the Panthers back on track during last Saturday’s muchneeded win over Manly.

John and Koroisau played together in the halves for the first time last weekend following the shock news that halfback Peter Wallace would join regular fiveeighth Jamie Soward on the sidelines with an ongoing knee injury.

Speaking with Extra Time on Tuesday, Moylan said the usual NSW Cup pair in John and Koroisau were the difference against the Sea Eagles and will only get better with time.

“I think we got back to basics last Saturday. We prepared well throughout the week and played simple footy. We played the kind of style we’re comfortable with and we know we can win playing it,” he said.

“It has been different playing with a new halves pairing each week but the two boys who have stepped up in that position have

been doing an outstanding job. I think they were two of our better players on the weekend and they’re probably going to take a lot of confidence out of it going forward.

“I don’t think they’ve played too many games together, so their combination will get better each week.”

Penrith have been crippled with injuries, once again, over the course of the first six weeks of the season with many fans worried they wouldn’t win a game until the most crucial player of the injured bunch, Jamie Soward, returns in a few weeks.

Moylan said his teammates were always confident they’d finally snag a win without their main man and that a switch to the halves for him was never on the cards.

“I’m not sure where that thought [from the fans] came from but we were always confident here [winning without Soward] and we knew we were capable of getting a win and proved that on the weekend,” he said.

“Ivan hasn’t said anything about moving me into the halves but I’m happy playing at fullback at the moment. I think the boys have stepped up in the halves, so there’s no need for me to move there anyway.”

This Saturday afternoon the Panthers

Matt Moylan will be aiming for back to back wins when they take on the Titans on the Gold Coast.

The Panthers hammered the Titans 40-0 in Bathurst just one month ago but Moylan’s expecting a much tougher encounter up north.

“They’ve got a different side and a few players back now,” he said.

“They’ll be confident after the game against Parra on the weekend and we know it’ll be a tough, physical game up there.”

Cleary pleased with win over Manly Panthers coach Ivan Cleary says last weekend’s 22-12 victory over Manly was the best 80 minute performance his side has put in this season.

Penrith snapped a three game losing streak by overcoming an 8-6 half-time deficit to defeat the Sea Eagles by 10 points.

“It was a tough game, a really tough game. Both sides were really keen to push hard for a win tonight and we understood what we were up for,” Cleary said in the post-match press conference.

“We played our best 80 minutes so far in terms of defensive pressure and energy... in the end that’s the sort of win that’s required.”

Cleary said he was particularly pleased with the defensive effort.

Meanwhile, under pressure Manly coach Geoff Toovey said injuries caused his side plenty of problems during the game.

“I don’t think we’ve finished a game with the full 17 yet,” Toovey said.

“It was a really good effort, and that’s the disappointing thing. To be in front and then for some strange reason to have five penalties in a row go against you, the match swung around.

“A massive quantum of ball was given to the Panthers and they took the opportunity. We had to handle that better.”

Manly captain Matt Ballin said it was important that his side stuck together.

“As a playing group we are trying to pull together and work harder,” Ballin said.

“The club is a very strong club... we’ve had a lot of hard times in the past.”

New partnership for City Origin side The New South Wales Rugby League’s City Origin side has linked with one of Australia’s most important community service agencies in a major partnership agreement.

KARI Aboriginal Resources Incorporated (KARI), established in 1999, is an Aboriginal community service, one of the largest accredited Aboriginal Children’s Services in Australia – and now it has namingrights and front-of-jersey sponsorship for the KARI City Origin side.

KARI delivers a quality out-of-home care service model that delivers full case management of Aboriginal children and young people in foster care, allowing the

organisation to be more innovative and effective in assuring Aboriginal culture plays a significant part in the person’s upbringing.

Chief Executive of the NSWRL, David Trodden, labelled the partnership a win for the game as well as the KARI City Origin side.

“The KARI organisation does outstanding, life-changing work in the community and it is wonderful to have their logo on the front of one of our most prized possessions, the City Origin jersey,” Mr Trodden said.

The course is called the Diploma of Sport Development for Rugby League and it’s been designed and developed by the Penrith Panthers and FC 11, in consultation with industry experts and TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute.

It’s designed to meet the demands of modern day football and its associated career opportunities, merging sports science, coaching methodology, high performance training, professional and academic development, business theory, and mentoring by professional athletes and coaches.

This Diploma is the first of its kind in rugby league. Students get the opportunity to see firsthand what it takes not only to be a professional rugby league player but everything that goes on behind the scenes to make a successful team and

organisation. This is a huge opportunity for anyone who has a passion for rugby league and wants to pursue a career in the sport.

The 35-week program runs annually under the guidance of Campus Manager Renee Selby-Jones, Head Coach Ben Harden, strength and conditioner Nathan Mairleitner and Head Lecturer Ian Evans. The course was so popular that when applications opened, they had interest from over 150 people. A lucky 50 were chosen for the inaugural year.

I sat in on a session a couple of weeks ago and observed as the class watched the Panthers NRL Captains run training session – which is an incredible experience – and then applied some of the skills to their classes that day. It’s an experience you wouldn’t get anywhere else and it’s something the FC 11 students will never forget.

It has been a tremendous hit so far and there’s already interest for next year’s course. I’m really looking forward to seeing the new generation of trainers, sports scientists, NRL players and football mangers walk through the FC 11 hallways!

Penrith injury crisis 2.0 History is repeating itself with the Panthers facing a significant injury crisis, including Jamal Idris being ruled out for the season

o, this isn’t the same story you read about Penrith’s injury crisis from late last year. Unfortunately, it’s a brand new piece but all the parts are the same.

Just when Panthers fans thought their side’s bad luck had finally reached the end comes the news that another wave of players will spend extended stints on the sidelines.

Headlining Penrith’s injured brigade this season is their most recent and most serious patient, centre Jamal Idris.

24-year-old Idris, who was enjoying an outstanding start to the season, ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (knee) during Penrith’s win over Manly last Saturday night.

The news was devastating for the personality player after he was told he had to undergo surgery and would likely miss the remainder of the season.

“It’s a massive loss losing Jamal, he’s been a big part of what we’ve been doing the last couple of years,” teammate Matt Moylan said.

Fortunately for Taylor, who suffered an ACL injury before the finals last year, the news was positive and he has been named to lead Penrith this weekend against the Titans.

Another player Penrith will be without for the next six weeks is halfback and captain Peter Wallace, who underwent knee surgery on Tuesday to repair cartilage after taking a knock during Penrith’s

Monday night loss to the Cowboys a fortnight ago.

Panthers coach Ivan Cleary said Wallace had been having problems with his knee since returning from a knee reconstruction in the off-season. “[Pete’s injury] is a cartilage thing he has been having trouble with for the whole season pretty much on the back of his reconstruction and he got another jam in it the other week,” he said.

“It has worn him down, it just got too bad, but the good news is that once he has that surgery he won’t have the ongoing troubles that he has had because he has pretty much been playing busted the whole year.”

Penrith’s halves were already in crisis mode following Jamie Soward’s back surgery last month and they’ll only continue to be under pressure until both Wallace and Soward return.

Also sitting on the sidelines for the Panthers is centre Dean Whare, who is still another week away after suffering a minor hamstring injury against the Cowboys.

Second rower and utility player Lewis Brown is also expected to return next week following rib cartilage damage, while big man Ben Murdoch-Masilia is also not far away.

There’s been a lot of hysteria lately about the lack of send offs after St George Illawarra forward Tyson Frizell knocked out Canterbury’s Tim Browne with a high shot.

Should Frizell have been sent off?

Plenty of fans and commentators were screaming for him to be marched. But as it turns out the match review panel deemed it a Grade 5 careless high tackle. In other words, seriously careless but not reckless or intentional. So essentially it was an accident.

Are we prepared to send players off for an accident?

Maybe we should if it causes an injury that leaves the opposition a player short for some or all of the game.

Send offs are a throw back to a violent past when a player was sent straight from the field for a deliberate and despicable act.

Think back to 1983 when Les Boyd, with a viciously cocked right elbow, broke Daryl Brohman’s jaw during his Queensland State of Origin debut. Thank God we don’t see acts like that any more.

It’s a much cleaner and safer game today.

The last player sent off in the NRL was Newcastle prop Kade Snowden for a shoulder charge on North Queensland’s Ray Thompson back in Round 24, 2013. Even that one was probably more of an accident than anything intentional but it did cause a horrible facial injury and a broken jaw to Thompson.

So by old school standards Snowden’s shoulder charge wouldn’t have warranted a send off but his foul act did cause the Cowboys to lose a player.

It does seem that the current send off and sin bin rules aren’t adequate for the current game. The solution? Simple. Give referees the power to send off players for all or part of the game relative to the damage their careless act causes to their opponents.

PENRITH END MANLY’S UNBEATEN RUN IN STRONG COMEBACK WIN RUFFLES MANLY’S FEATHERS SECOND HALF DISPLAY AT PEPPER STADIUM AS TRANS-TASMAN BATTLE AWAITS The Penrith Panthers have handed Manly their first loss of the season, defeating the Sea Eagles 36-16 at Pepper Stadium last Saturday.

It was a remarkable performance by the home side who, just days earlier, played in a tough encounter against the North Queensland Cowboys on Monday night.

Despite the Sea Eagles entering the game with five straight wins under their belt and full of confidence, it was the Panthers who opened the scoring through Maliko Filino in the 13th minute to lead 4-0.

Not long after it was Manly’s turn to hit back with Sea Eagle James Parker charging over the line to score. Manly made the conversion and led midway through the first half 6-4.

10 minutes later the visitors were in again through Matt Douglas, who raced away to score and give Manly a 10-4 lead at the break.

Just like they did in the opening 40 minutes, Penrith were first to score in the second 40 with Filino bagging his second of the afternoon to level the scores.

Following Filino’s double, Penrith started to get a roll on with fullback

Both conversions sailed through the uprights for Penrith to take a 22-10 lead.

It didn’t take long for Hawawira-Naera to get his second try of the afternoon after taking a brilliant pass to punch through the defence and score.

Panthers young guns Joshua Jay and Jack Nelson were in themselves moments later to put the icing on the cake, up 36-10. Manly scored a consolation try in the final seconds but the game was already well out of reach.

This Saturday afternoon the fifthplaced Panthers will hit the road to take on the Gold Coast Titans in Round 7 of the Holden Cup. Last week the Titans defeated Parramatta 40-22 to sit in eighth position.

The third-placed Panthers now turn their attention to what promises to be an explosive clash at home this Saturday against the fifth-placed New Zealand Warriors. Having defeated the Tigers 28-16 at home last week, the Warriors will be looking to win their first away game having lost their previous three.

The Warriors have named a powerful side with the likes of Glen Fisiiahi, Ken Maumolo and David Fusitu’a in the backs.

In team news, Penrith have named Eddie Aiono and Tupou Sopoaga to start in place of Robert Jennings and Bryce Cartwright (both first grade), with George Jennings moving into the centres. Chris Smith will also start in the back-row in place of James Fisher-Harris (Holden Cup). Andy Saunders and Leilani Latu will also start in place of Brendan Attwood and Rodney Coates who both join an extended bench.

Penrith are firmly entrenched in the NSW Cup top four after a come-from-behind 24-16 win over a Manly side that played with plenty of character despite their lowly position on the ladder at Pepper Stadium.

The Panthers struggled for much of the game before a 65th minute penalty goal to Will Smith followed by a late try to Brendan Attwood with five minutes remaining sealed back-to-back wins for the defending premiers.

Shortly before kick-off, Penrith announced the shock inclusion of boom back-rower Bryce Cartwright, but lost Isaac John (NRL) and Tupou Sopoaga (injury), replaced by Adrian Davis and Wellington Albert (on debut).

It was Manly who dominated the first half and at one point led 16-6 through simple tries to Tyson Andrews, Michael Chee Kam and Dom Reardon that wouldn’t have pleased coach Garth Brennan, before some fine lead-up work from Robert Jennings allowed Chris Smith to finish off a smart play to reduce the gap to six at half-time.

T

he X Factor 2014 runner-up Dean Ray is an intense character who clearly doesn’t do things by half. By the time he was 16 the singer/songwriter had decided to leave home due to an overwhelming urge to see what else was out there.

“I wanted to be more experienced at the world, at life in general, by the time I turned 18, that was the main thing that got me out,” Dean said.

“In the end looking back on it, that sort of lifestyle has really added to my artistry.”

For the 22-year-old, much of his musical inspiration has come from the world around him.

“I’m an observer, I sort of watch the world and see it as it is and sing of what I see,” he said.

“Sometimes they’re experiences of mine as well but a lot of the time I’ll sing it as if it’s an experience of mine but it’s actually not, it’s somebody else.”

Along with being beneficial to his music career Dean feels that the years after he left home taught him not to take things for granted. “[Those experiences] help you to not be a spoilt little shit as well. The day that you start paying rent and power and rego, that’s when you start to realise what it’s like,” he said.

It’s really no surprise that Dean ended up in the music industry.

His parents are musicians and much

of his childhood was spent around the music world.

“When I was 12 I realised that’s what I wanted to be, which is cool to realise it so young,” Dean said.

“A lot of people hit 30 and still don’t know what they want to do, or where they belong, but I just feel so comfortable in a stage environment.”

The singer/songwriter decided to take his unique brand of music, which he describes as a mix of indie, folk, rock and blues, onto the small screen and auditioned for reality talent show ‘The X Factor’.

“If you’ve got your stuff together, if you’ve got a plan, then it’s an opportunity that you don’t want to really miss out on,” he said about the decision.

“Television is an incredible vehicle to get your music heard and it really launched me into where I am now, able to tour around with a full band and a full setup and play to a whole bunch of people, it’s fantastic.

“Before the reality show I was playing at pubs with like 30 drunk people there not really listening,” he laughed.

Clearly it was the right decision with all four judges being blown away by his performance of ‘Bette Davis Eyes’. After finishing second, Dean released his debut self-titled album in November 2014, which included his debut single ‘Coming Back’, which debuted at number five on the ARIA charts.

Local fans will have the chance to hear songs from the album when Dean Ray performs at Rooty Hill RSL on Sunday, April 19.

After the launching pad of ‘The X Factor’, Dean has big dreams for the future, starting with taking on the international market.

“Dominating the world would be nice,” he laughed.

“I’ve always wanted to play places like Sydney Entertainment Centre and Rod Laver Arena and things like that. So like 15,000 seaters and stuff, that has always been my aim.

“So just taking it overseas and getting it to as many people as I possibly can before I die, is what it’s about.”

While it’s not easy standing out in a crowded group of talent show alumni, Dean feels that the key to success is embracing your individuality.

“If you notice all these pool of artists that are doing big gigs around the world,

none of them follow or copy anybody else,” he said.

“They’ve all got their own unique thing and that’s all it is. I just be who I am because no one else is like you. You be who you are and therefore you’re unique straight away.

“Do your own thing, if it’s not successful who cares, at least you’re being yourself, you’re being who you are. I’m just lucky enough that my style’s a little bit unique and it resonates with people.”

African Children’s Choir in Penrith AUDIENCES will have the chance to enjoy a fun evening of music and dancing when The African Children’s Choir comes to Penrith this May. The African Children’s Choir is a Christian aid organisation that works in African countries including Uganda. The children involved in the group study at a primary boarding school in Entebbe and travel the world with the choir, singing, dancing and drumming for audiences from local community performances to large stadium shows.

The group formed in 1984 and since then the choir has performed for noted figures including the late Nelson Mandela and Queen Elizabeth II. They have also shared the stage with musical superstars Annie Lennox and Sir Paul McCartney.

The tour is presented by charity group Kwaya Australia who aim to promote awareness of disadvantaged children in Africa and to raise funds for the choir program.

DVD Paddington

Rated G // KATE REID Childhood favourite Paddington is back with this fun family flick. On a trip to Peru an English explorer discovers a group of bears who he teaches about all things British. Years later when a devastating earthquake destroys their jungle home, one of the young bears decides to seek a new home in England.

When he arrives in London he is taken in by the Brown family who offer him a place to stay while he finds the explorer his family met years before.

Unfortunately while staying with the Browns, the newly named Paddington unwittingly gets himself into plenty of mischief and attracts the attention of the evil Millicent Clyde (Nicole Kidman) who plans to

add him to her taxidermy collection.

The film is beautifully shot and Paddington blends in seamlessly with the human characters. It’s hard not to fall in love with the cute and well meaning bear with a passion for marmalade.

There’s some nice little touches that really lift the film including a calypso band who pop up throughout London.

There’s also a positive underlying message about the importance of being yourself.

‘Paddington’ is a magical film that does justice to this classic childhood character.

Grab it for the kids!

Rated M // STEPHEN BISSET ‘Fast & Furious 7’ is big, bold, brash and it’s got more explosions than you can poke a stick at, but what else would you expect from a franchise that has been getting steadily more outrageous with every instalment?

While it’s pretty stock-standard fare plot-wise, a taut script, some truly audacious set pieces, and great onscreen chemistry between all of the ensemble cast means ‘Fast & Furious 7’ is up there among the more memorable of the action genre. A fitting swansong for the late Paul Walker and possibly the best in the franchise.

Sitting in Chilli Jam on a Tuesday night it’s clear from the almost full restaurant that diners have well and truly embraced this newcomer to the Riley Street dining precinct. Penrith’s newest Thai restaurant opened its doors in February and offers diners a modern and inviting dining experience.

The menu features a perfect blend of traditional Thai favourites along with some innovative options that will most likely be new to many diners.

To start our meal my dining partner and I indulged in a few recommended specialities including entrees Meang Cha Plu, a traditional Thai finger food and Scallop Crispy Potato, which offered grilled scallop layered with crispy roti potato and Thai seafood sauce.

One of the tests of a good Thai restaurant is the quality of its curries, as well as the undisputed king of Thai dishes, Pad Thai. For the main we decided to try the red curry beef which was deliciously creamy with tender beef strips and the perfect combination of vegetables. We also enjoyed a chicken Pad Thai which was just as pleasing.

n week days you’ll find Katrina Hill running a busy interior design and colour consultancy in Sydney, but come weekends she ditches high fashion for jeans, a tractor, bobcat or slasher and becomes vigneron on her Far Ago Hill vineyard at Canyonleigh, in the Southern Highlands halfway between Sydney and Canberra.

And that latter role rewards her with a ripper Pinot Gris – a variety for which the Southern Highlands is earning a fast-growing reputation – and whose story began in 2003 after Katrina and then-husband, Ricardo Farago had toured Europe tasting as many Pinot Gris as they could, and coming home to search for the ideal site from which to produce their own that would be equal to the best they’d tasted in Europe.

It was at Canyonleigh they found their perfect combination of soil, climate and the elements, and now Katrina tends to it at weekends under advice from consultant Ben Brazenor, and with her wine made by Chris Carpenter at Lark Hill in Bungendore.

Since 2011 Katrina’s Pinot Gris has been labelled Far Ago Hill, a play on ex-husband Ricardo’s surname Farago and her own maiden name Hill. A current-release 2014 is a great drop of delicate aromatics, lemon-citrus and apple flavours and with a crisp, dry finish – perfect at $30 with seafood.

One to note: Voyager Estate in Western Australia’s Margaret River has released a 2014 Chenin Blanc whose soft tropical fruit flavours, fresh acidity and a suggestion of sweetness you’ll find an ideal match with mildly spiced Asian dishes or fresh seafoods.

An early-drinking style, this is a beautiful $20 drop to buy now and enjoy now.

On Saturday, April 11 the Penrith Regional Gallery held the opening of their latest exhibit ‘Home/Front’, which commemorates the 100 year anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign. The exhibit features drawings of the campaign, artefacts from families of those who served, along with artefacts from the collection of the Australian War Memorial.

The exhibit was opened by His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d) Governor of NSW. Guests in attendance included noted Australian artist Ken Done, Mayor Ross Fowler, Japanese Consul-General Mr Masato Takaoka, CEO Penrith Performing and Visual Arts Hania Radvan, The Joan Music Producer Valda Silvy and Fiona Scott MP. ‘Home/Front’ will be showing at the gallery until Sunday, May 24.

Malcolm and then-wife Madeleine had visited Dürnbach for a commemorative service there on Remembrance Sunday 1974, the service itself conducted by a Royal Air Force chaplain and with representatives of the United States and (thenWest) Germany alongside those of most other countries involved in World War II. “They all laid wreaths,” Malcolm said.

“But we were appalled to note that Australia did not have a presence – neither the Australian Embassy nor the RAAF bothered to send either representative or wreath.

“We expressed our disbelief in a letter to a Sydney newspaper, and as a result the Air Force Association contacted us and asked me to buy and lay a wreath on their behalf the next time a service was planned.”

Today Australian visitors to Dürnbach cannot miss the headstones of the seven crew of Lancaster bomber LL848 of the RAAF’s 463rd Squadron – they’re close to the main entrance to the cemetery.

The four Australians were the young pilot, Pilot Officer Eric Page (just 21) of Melbourne, Flying Officer John Sidney Braithwaite (the oldest at 28) from Griffith NSW, Pilot Officer Edwin Ryland Brown (23) of Hamilton Qld, and Flight Sergeant Gordon Hughie Noakes (20 years of age).

s wreaths are laid at war graves around Australia and overseas on this ANZAC Day, amongst them will be tributes to seven airmen whose headstones stand side-by-side at a Commonwealth War Graves cemetery at the little Bavarian village of Dürnbach, in one of the most stunningly beautiful settings in Germany.

But what brings that extra tear to the eyes of those who view these graves is that not only are four of these of young Australians aged in their just-20s – but that they died instantly when their RAAF Lancaster bomber was shot down in the inky darkness of 9-minutes-past-2 on the morning of ANZAC Day 1944.

And on whose graves, every year on Remembrance Sunday (that nearest Remembrance Day November 11) rather than ANZAC Day, another very special wreath is laid. And it’s not by family, friends, ex-service associations nor government, but by an unlikely group of other pilots – members of Germany’s World War II Luftwaffe Night Pilots Association in respect of these young, one-time enemies.

We heard of these graves from fellow travel writer Malcolm Andrews who first visited Dürnbach in the 1970s while working with Radio Free Europe in Munich.

“Dürnbach lies about 45km south-east of Munich,” Malcolm recalled.

“And on its outskirts is Dürnbach War Cemetery, a more restful last place one could not imagine for its almost 3,000 young men shot down over Bavaria,

What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy?

Without question, I feel good, positive and ready for life’s challenges. When I wake in the morning I feel energetic and alive. I have also met so many great people through exercising. The social benefits are great!

How did you get into fitness?

I was always a sporty kid. Actively involved in such a wide range of sports like gymnastics, touch football, basketball, little athletics, swimming, I enjoyed it all and did it well. Throughout life I remained involved in sports. Recently I decided to make a big career change into the fitness industry and do what I feel passionate about.

Three top tips for good health?

1. Be positive and surround yourself with positive, supportive people.

People that inspire you to be better.

I don’t want to stress you, but stress affects your physical health.

You may have found yourself sweating walking out for a speech and felt your heartbeat pick up, or got the ‘shakes’ after a close call with an accident.

These reactions are normal and caused by hormones that helped our ancestors cope with the threats and uncertainties of their world.

Yes I go to the gym every day but nothing beats swimming/snorkelling at the beach. I love the salt water!

How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ’take it easy’?

On days when I don’t feel like training I know that I will not reach my goal by doing nothing. I enjoy the endorphin rush after a hard training session. After training I feel balanced emotionally, physically and mentally.

The problem is the longer your mind feels stressed, the longer your physical reaction systems remain activated.

This can lead to more serious health issues.

The old saying that stress “ages” a person faster than normal has been shown in many studies, for example a study showed women who had spent many years giving high dependency care were no longer able to fully regenerate blood cells, these women were found to be physically a decade older than their chronological age.

Extended reactions to stress can alter the body’s immune system in ways that are associated with other “ageing” conditions such as frailty, functional decline, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, inflammatory arthritis, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.

Research also suggests that stress impairs the brain’s ability to block certain toxins and other large, potentially harmful molecules. This condition is also common to patients suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease.

And it can be ‘perceived’ stress, whether it’s actually real doesn’t even matter, if you just think it’s stressful you will be getting all the physical symptoms, and all the different stresses accumulate, from a high workload to eating chemical filled junk food to paying overdue bills, even the wrong exercise. So its very important to identify some of the major stresses in your life.

2. Eat fresh foods. No processed foods, anything with an ingredient that you don’t know what it is, don’t buy it.

Buy your foods from the outside isles of the supermarket.

3. Exercise in any way that you find enjoyable and fun. Grab a pushbike with the family and go for a ride.

Biggest health/fitness misconception?

That hours of cardio is the only way to burn fat. Initially cardio training will burn fat but after a short period of time the body will store what it needs (fat!) to get through that next cardio workout.

You need to change something. The FITT principle of training refers to Frequency, Intensity, Time, Type. In order for the cardio workout to continue to show results one of these needs to change. Other types of workouts not only burn fat but also tone, for example HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) which will continue to burn fat for hours after training and you will spend less time in the gym.

Arthritis is one of the most common ailments in middle aged and older pets. Sometimes, even young animals can develop arthritic changes in their joints. Arthritis causes chronic pain and can affect your pet’s quality of life.

Arthritis tends to be more obvious during colder weather. The most obvious signs include limping and stiffness and you may find that this is worse as soon as your pet wakes up and improves as

they warm up. Your pet may also become reluctant to do things that were previously easy such as get in or out of the car or jump up onto beds etc. Arthritic animals may also become tired easily and become irritable when touched.

They may even growl or try and bite if they are patted somewhere that is painful for them. They can also develop muscle atrophy; this means that muscle tissue will

decrease in size due to lack of use and affected animals will often have legs which look much thinner than a normal leg.

Arthritis is generally diagnosed based on history and symptoms and sometimes with x-rays. There are several treatment options for arthritis.

Overweight animals should be encouraged to lose weight as being overweight complicates the treatment of arthritis.

You may think that arthritic animals shouldn’t go for walks as this may be painful for them, however, gentle and moderate exercise is beneficial as it maintains muscle mass and preserves the flexibility of joints. Heavy exercise such as sprinting and jumping up is counter productive. It is important that arthritic animals are exercised on a lead or harness and not allowed to go off lead so they do not over exert themselves. Swimming is an excellent exercise as it improves muscle mass without placing excessive pressure on the joints.

There are joint supplements available and these products contain ingredients such as glucosamine, chondroitin and fish oils. These supplements protect the joints and help repair cartilage while aiming to prevent further damage.

These products work in some but not all pets.

he all-new 2016 Spark was revealed at both the 2015 Seoul Motor Show and New York International Auto Show earlier this month, giving Australians the first look at the next generation micro-car which will be launched in the country during the first quarter of 2016.

he Penrith City Softball Association have gone back to back after their U11 boys teeball team defeated Macarthur 5-4 to defend their State Championship title.

Held last weekend in Campbelltown, Macarthur earned their place in the final after defeating Penrith City in the opening playoff game.

Despite the defeat, Penrith City remained in the competition and had to battle a tough Georges River team in the semi final in order to earn themselves the right to once again take on Macarthur in the decider.

Penrith City dismantled Georges River with relative ease 7-5 and took on Macarthur in an epic rematch that went right down to the wire.

In the end, Penrith City were the better team when it mattered, winning the epic encounter by just one run.

Meanwhile, Penrith City’s U11 girls team finished in fifth place despite getting some invaluable help in the lead up to the tournament.

Australian softball players Taylah Tsitskronis and Samantha Poole visited the girls last week in Surveyors Creek Softball Complex in Glenmore Park to offer up some pointers ahead of that weekend’s State Championships.

Tsitskronis, who is also a proud local

junior, and Poole put the youngsters through their paces helping them with their fielding, throwing and sliding abilities.

Justin Saunby, whose daughter Ciara is in the team, said the coaching session took the girls by surprise.

“The girls were ecstatic and were all extremely excited,” he said.

“Us parents knew about it for a few weeks and kept it a secret from them until they walked up and said ‘Hi girls, we’re here to train you today’.

“Having Australian softball players come out is very special and my daughter hasn’t stopped talking about it since.”

THE high flying GWS Giants have declared they are no longer afraid of the Sydney Swans as they prepare to take on their crosstown rivals this weekend.

Both the Giants and Swans are currently in the AFL’s top four following two straight wins from both sides to start the season.

Last weekend the Giants came from behind against Melbourne to post their second win of the season, and now sit third on the premiership ladder. The Giants were down by 27 points at half-time before storming home to beat the Demons by 45 points.

The Giants set a new club record in the process when they scored nine goals in the third quarter to take the lead and put the result out of reach.

“It’s better to be in-form than out of form,” Giants coach Leon Cameron said about this weekend’s clash against the Swans.

“It’s a really good challenge for our young side to step up to the mark and we feel as though we’ve closed the gap against the Swans in the last year.

“We go into this game more confident than we have in previous years. To beat the Swans you have to be very good in every aspect… but we’re not afraid of taking on the Swans this Saturday and it should be a fantastic game of footy.”

Giants co-captain Callan Ward said he was looking forward to the highly anticipated encounter.

“It’s a big game, the Swans are on fire but we’ve been playing pretty good footy as well starting the season with two wins as have they, so it’s a big game for both teams,” he said.

The GWS Giants take on the Sydney Swans on Saturday at the SCG.

asketball in Penrith has never been brighter following the news that a whopping seven local juniors will represent NSW at the upcoming Australian Junior Championships in Tasmania this July.

Four girls including Chloe Bloom, Meg Jefferson, Binta Salawu and Olivia Schneider will represent the NSW Metropolitan U16 girls team, while Lachlan Charlton, Zac Cini and Daniel Goldrick will suit up for the NSW Metropolitan U16 boys team.

In further good news, fellow locals Jasper Rentoy and Tatiana Beaumont have been announced as reserves for their respective sides.

“This is an amazing feat for our Association and the local area to have one third of the NSW teams coming from Penrith Basketball,” Association Manager, Leonie Moore said.

15-year-old Lachlan Charlton from Jamisontown revealed it was his off-season ambition to make his first ever State representative team this year.

“It was great to get selected. It’s what I wanted all year and was one of my goals, I’m so excited,” he said.

Fellow 15-year-old and first time NSW rep Binta Salawu was equally as proud to make the side.

“It was good to get named as I was working very hard to make the proper side,” she said.

“I was somewhat disappointed being a reserve last year but it made me want it even more.”

The Cambridge Park resident, who has been playing basketball for seven years, puts Penrith’s State representative success down to the highly regarded coaches in the local system.

“We have really good coaches here and

they’ve developed us really well,” Binta said.

“We have a pretty strong age group throughout the entire Association,” Lachlan added.

The pair hope to continue to make representative teams for many years to come and would both one day love to don the green and gold and represent Australia.

Wanderers goalkeeper Ante Covic rates his side’s chances highly if they manage to get off to a good start.

“On their day Adelaide are capable of winning everything but, at the same time, when they start good they are hard to reel in,” he said.

“If you can get on top of them early by getting an early goal, I wouldn’t say they struggle but it gives the other side more of a chance.”

Despite the Wanderers going down to Adelaide 2-0 and 2-1 earlier this year, Covic is confident those two losses won’t mean anything come Saturday night.

“Even though they’ve had two victories against us, I can’t say they dominated or ran away with anything,” he said.

“That’s a positive sign for us and we’re playing at home where we have to be strong again like we were the first two years.”

Last Saturday the Wanderers went down 1-0 to the Central Coast Mariners. The loss leaves the Wanderers in last position, two points behind Newcastle.

The match against Adelaide kicks off at 5pm on Saturday.

he Western Sydney Wanderers will be doing it for their fans over the final two rounds of the ALeague season, starting this Saturday night at Pirtek Stadium.

Wanderers fans, who go to home fixtures in their droves, haven’t had too much to cheer for this season, with their side now officially dead last on the A-League ladder with just two games remaining.

However, with Western Sydney’s final two matches against Adelaide United and Perth being held at home, Wanderers coach Tony Popovic says there’s no better time than now to repay fans for their loyalty and support during what was a difficult year.

“I’d love for us to get six points over the last two games. I want our fans to go home happy again, for a change,” he said.

“They always turn out in numbers, they are vocal throughout and they are just tremendous fans. I’d love to send them home happy.”

Does the A-League’s salary cap fit? f the cap fits. That’s the hot topic of the A-League in the past week, thanks to Perth Glory’s alleged salary cap rorting.

At the time of writing, Glory are still denying wrongdoing, while the FFA is adamant they went to great lengths to not only breach the cap, but cover-up the whole thing up. The latter point is why the FFA is so angry, stripping Perth of the right to play in the finals.

An independent tribunal will sort it out, but you get the feeling if Perth don’t get the answer they want, they’ll wind their way up the legal system in Australia. Just what the world needs. More lawyers lining their pockets.

But as this all plays out, the question of “if the cap fits?” has switched to “do we need a bigger cap, or a cap at all?”

Countless former players, administrators, coaches, or anyone with a passing interest in the matter has come up with an alternative to the current system, which is $2.55 million per season, with two marquees (one Australian, one from wherever) excluded from the final figure.

The reason there is a cap is the FFA don’t believe the current marketplace is mature enough to allow free enterprise.

The clubs need protecting from themselves, or else they’ll be like the parent who has to pick up the pieces consistently from the children who can’t get their lives in order.

At the moment, the clubs that could afford a free for all are – Sydney, Western Sydney, Melbourne Victory, Melbourne City.

Ones that couldn’t – Adelaide, Brisbane, Central Coast.

The great unknowns – Perth, Newcastle.

Perth because Tony Sage, its owner, has been willing to tip millions into the club, but this latest episode might force a major re-think. And anyway, if this has gone on in Perth, does the game really want a club like Glory, rife with lies, in its midst?

BRIEF Having graced the competition since inception, Mark Bridge knows a thing or two – or 200 – about developing in the Hyundai A-League.

The 29-year-old established early potential at Newcastle Jets, grew into a Grand Final hero, became an Australian international and is now on the cusp of his 200th Hyundai A-League appearance.

Should he appear on Saturday against Adelaide it will be fitting for Bridge’s major milestone – achieved by just eight others before him – to be adorned in Red & Black on Members’ Day. The Wanderland wall of noise has been the soundtrack to the Blacktownborn attacker’s career resurgence since signing with the club as a foundation player.

“It’s amazing for a club that’s still in its infancy,” Bridge says of the ever swelling membership.

“It’s going to be crazy to see how big the Wanderers can take it in five years’ time.

“It’s just going to keep getting bigger and better.”

At certain stages it appeared as if Bridge wouldn’t enjoy the same trajectory in his career. A self-confessed slump at Sydney FC might have meant a premature end. Instead the attacker is now a rare 10-year veteran with a resume matched by few others.

Wherever the Hyundai A-League has been, Bridge has planted the flag.

The 2012/13 All-Star has amassed two premierships, two Grand Final wins – scoring in both – and was Wanderers’ maiden Player of the Year recipient.

Add in two Socceroos caps and a meeting with Lionel Messi’s Argentina at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the field is wide for choosing a most memorable moment.

“Scoring in the two Grand Finals is amazing – it’s something I’m proud of,” Bridge says. But that run we went on when nobody gave us a chance at the Wanderers is something you just can’t describe,” he said.

IN BRIEF Penrith Panthers centre Jamal Idris has been ruled out for the rest of the NRL season after suffering a bad knee injury while playing against Manly last weekend.

It’s a huge blow for 24-year-old Idris, who had a strong start to the season with Penrith.

You sat out the game against the Central Coast last Saturday, what did you make of the boys’ performance?

It was a little bit disappointing because we probably weren’t as fluid as we have been the last couple of weeks.

We had quite a few late changes going into the match but it was one that got away.

The Mariners applied early pressure and we copped a goal after just two minutes.

We probably had two or three chances to get back into the game in the first half but we couldn’t find the back of the net.

It’s disappointing but that’s been the story of our season.

Your stand in Dean Bouzanis told News Corp on Tuesday that he wanted to be the number one keeper at the club, do you think he has the potential to be that one day?

Dean is a good, solid goalkeeper and under Ron Corry (Wanderers goalkeeping coach) he’ll keep on improving.

He’s always had talent since when he was young and once he’s given that chance I think he’ll be a capable first goalkeeper.

Dean and I have a good relationship at training and he’s a confident guy as well.

He’s got all the tools and will continue to become a very good goalkeeper working with Ron. You’re off contract and we’re now down to the final few weeks of the season, can I ask where you’re at for next season yet?

There’s a few players who aren’t sure what’s happening yet at the moment.

I think we’ll get these next few games out of the way and hopefully everything will work itself out.

I’m not expecting to hear anything until this season’s under wraps and we can reassess and can go from there.

There’s no question in my mind that I want to keep on playing.

I’m still as fit as ever and enjoying the game.

Without question, I’ve got a lot more left in me.

You’re 40 in June, do you think you’ll play on with another club if you can’t get another deal with the Wanderers or would you likely hang up the boots?

I’ve enjoyed my time at the Wanderers, I’d love to stay here and remain at the club long term, even post my playing career because football is all I know.

Those things are up in the air right now but, realistically, it’ll be hard with two young kids to move to another club for the sake of a one year deal.

I feel at home at Western Sydney, I’ve been here since day one.

I love the club and this is the place I see myself at.

Has it been tough not knowing if you have a future seeing as the season only has two weeks to go?

I think the last four contracts I’ve had have been one year deals.

It’s something I’ve had to deal with and I’ve been around the game long enough to know that you just have to focus on your football and keep going at it.

While it’s nicer to have your future secured up, I know at the same time the only way I’m going to secure it is to keep proving myself day in, day out at training and in the games I play for the Western Sydney Wanderers.

BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers men’s Waratah Championship League side have continued their losing ways, going down to Hornsby 97-92.

Ben Kearins was best in a beaten bunch for Penrith scoring 26 points and six boards in the five point defeat. Penrith have now slipped outside the top six into seventh position and will play the Newcastle Hunters this weekend.

Meanwhile, it was much better news for Penrith’s women’s team who hammered the Spiders 62-44.

AFL: The Penrith Rams have lost the opening game of the AFL Sydney Division 2 season, defeated by the Manly Warringah Giants 72-47.

This Saturday afternoon Penrith will play the Randwick City Saints at Pioneers Park.

Meanwhile, the Penrith Ramettes ladies side enjoyed a bye during their first round and won’t play until next weekend against Blacktown Magic.

OZTAG: The Penrith OzTag Association winter season begins this Tuesday and Wednesday night for mixed teams and Thursday night for men’s teams.

This winter season will be the biggest in Penrith OzTag history with 152 teams already registered. 72 mixed teams will battle it out on Tuesday night with 11 mixed teams competing on Wednesday and 69 men’s teams on Thursday.

RUGBY LEAGUE: The final round of the junior rugby league representative season saw some mixed results for both Penrith Panthers sides while the Western Sydney Academy of Sport (WSAS) teams enjoyed a bye.

In the Harold Matthews competition, Penrith lost to the Western Suburbs Magpies 24-16.

In the SG Ball competition, Penrith defeated the Magpies 48-8.

Semi finals begin this weekend.

enrith Emus coach Sateki Tu’ipulotu says he’ll meet with NSW Rugby officials soon to discuss a fairer schedule for the struggling club from next year.

The Emus have had a rough start to the season, playing and ultimately getting blown away by some of the competition’s heavyweight teams in the opening four rounds.

Over the first month of the season, Penrith have played some of the league’s strongest clubs and averaged a woeful 4.5 points for and a diabolical 68 points against.

The Emus won’t play a side in the bottom half of the competition until West Harbour, who sit in 10th, in three weeks time.

“We probably need to take a look at the draw for next year because it’s not just affecting the first grade boys but it’s also affecting our Colts teams,” Tu’ipulotu said.

“What NSW Rugby have to understand is for these players to stay in the game of rugby, they need to play against teams in the bottom six early to build their confidence.

“At the moment, they are getting the confidence knocked out of them in the first four or five weeks, which isn’t good.”
