Big crowds at Penrith Stadium and other public places could be vulnerable to a terrorist

attack using a vehicle similar to what we’ve seen overseas, according to Penrith Councillor Marcus Cornish.

Cr Cornish wants the community to take a proactive approach to the daunting prospect of

a terror attack by beefing up security measures across the city.

He wants to identify vulnerable areas within Penrith and St Marys, and look at the use of bollards and barriers.

It comes as Penrith Police Station increases its security measures, installing sturdier and thicker silver bollards at its entryway to prevent potential incidents.

hey are the visions seared into our heads – innocent pedestrians covered in white sheets, ploughed down by trucks or vehicles driven at the hands of evil.

And one Penrith City Councillor wants to avoid similar scenes of carnage and devastation from ever happening here.

At Monday night’s Ordinary Council meeting, Councillor Marcus Cornish requested a report back to Council identifying all major vulnerable pedestrian areas in Penrith and St Marys, where large numbers of people could be subject to a terrorist attack from motor vehicles.

The North Ward representative said railway stations, shopping areas, sporting venues, and university and school precincts were at particular risk.

“What upsets me is that people in authority don’t seem to take the threat to people’s lives seriously,” he told the Weekender.

“Like we have seen overseas and in Melbourne, this is a real threat and is happening now and we need to ensure the people of Penrith are safe.”

Meanwhile, in what seems to be a sign of the times, Penrith Police Station recently reinforced its security measures, installing sturdier and thicker silver bollards at its entryway.

“As a result of this, works are occurring across NSW to ensure police stations continue to be safe places for our employees and members of the public,” she said.

“Security risk assessments are undertaken regularly by local area and specialist commands.”

Cr Cornish said it was prudent to be proactive.

“We are very casual, but wait until something happens – then it will be too late,” he said.

“The amount of people who walk between the station and the stadium when the football is on is huge.

“You can drive straight in there and cause all sorts of problems.”

Got it wrong: The ABC The ABC has made some quirky decisions over the years but its move this week to “ban” Natasha Exelby from future appearances on its news channel after an unfortunate blooper is perhaps the most puzzling in recent memory.

Exelby’s mishap last weekend, in which she was caught daydreaming without realising she was on air, has gone viral and given everyone a good laugh.

In the aftermath of the incident, which in truth was the most exciting thing to happen on the ABC’s news channel on a Saturday night in years, Exelby Tweeted to thank those for their support, and admit that it wasn’t her “finest hour”.

Anyone involved in live media, whether it be radio or television, knows that this stuff happens from time to time.

YouTube is littered with newsreader and reporter clangers and some of the best are usually thrown into montages when a veteran journo calls it quits.

It was a major over-reaction by an ABC management team with a false sense of entitlement.

Of course, the ABC issued a statement after copping a day’s worth of backlash over the story, denying that it was true and saying that Exelby remains employed as a freelance contributor.

Conveniently, it did not specifically say whether or not Exelby would be considered for future on air roles.

I smell something fishy here – the story didn’t come from nowhere and it took way too long for the ABC to hose it down for it to not have some sort of truth attached.

Exelby has handled the whole thing with class. It seems the ABC has not.

Got it wrong: News Ltd and Fairfax The long, sad, painful death of Fairfax Media’s quality journalism and print publications is dreadful to watch.

Last week, they announced a further shakeup with the editorial budget to be reduced by another $30 million.

The Sydney Morning Herald’s newsroom is now a shadow of its former self, torn apart by bean counters.

Fairfax says it will continue to print daily newspapers while an audience exists, but the hypocrisy in this is that it plans to put most of its cash and effort into digital media, essentially saying to the print readers that they matter

Meanwhile, reports emerged on Tuesday that News Limited too would be swinging the axe across its editorial teams nationwide, with photographers a big target.

All of us in journalism know that money doesn’t grow on trees. Times are tough, especially for the major publishers (independent publishers are a different story in a lot of cases). But like many in the industry, I’m over editorial teams at major newspapers having to take the full force of cost cutting at publications.

Bean counters, listen up.

Readership and subscribers will only increase if you produce engaging, original content written by experienced, trained journalists.

Cutting more and more editorial staff each year further destroys the quality of the very products you’re trying to save.

Go ahead, save your millions. But really, at what cost?

The balance sheet may look good tomorrow, but it’s not sustainable nor sensible.

Go ahead, run ‘wire’ copy. Run stock photos or pictures from agencies. Run press releases as news, without the other side of the story. Why not? It’s cheaper.

Fact checking? Old school.

Problem is, your readers aren’t as stupid as you seem to think they are.

As the quality of the content gets poorer – and it will – the readers will eventually stop coming to you.

They won’t subscribe, they won’t read, they won’t engage.

And guess what? Your advertisers will quickly follow suit.

Got it right: Anthony Griffin I can’t believe there’s still some people in the rugby league world who think Anthony Griffin’s decision to axe Matt Moylan, Waqa Blake and Peta Hiku from Penrith’s first grade team last week was too harsh.

The trio broke a direct order from their coach and deserved the discipline handed out.

Rugby league can’t have it both ways.

It too often demands perfection from players off the field, yet thinks we should have just let this one go with the old “boys will be boys” mentality.

I dare say that the vast majority of rugby league controversies that end up on the front page of the paper could at some stage have been averted if their club or coach intervened earlier.

The Panthers may have lost last weekend but Griffin’s decision will ultimately prove to be a winner.

The hypocrisy of many footy experts this past week has been extraordinary.

Food sensitivities are not just for children, and Ms Kane warns adults that the temptation of chocolate is not worth the discomfort and stomach pains later.

“If you do have food sensitivities or allergies, you have to be very careful,” she said.

“You’re best to prepare for yourself and

not really eat the things that other people give you.”

Ms Kane believes that there is no reason why chocolate can’t be a part of the celebrations, but it shouldn’t be all of it.

“It’s important for families to look at what Easter means,” she said.

“It’s different to different people, of course for some it is a religious festival.

“But it was also an early pagan festival in Europe that celebrated the beginning of summer, new life and growth.”

Nutritionist Fiona Kane from Informed Health Nutritional Wellbeing Centre said she has seen a large increase in food sensitivities and allergies in the local area.

“I’ve seen a big increase, the main things I have seen are dairy and gluten issues,” she said.

“That can be challenging at Easter because chocolate contains dairy, and some of them contain gluten as well.”

There are more ways to celebrate the holiday than with sweets. Ms Kane recommended activities to get kids involved instead of just gorging on junk food.

“With things like Easter egg hunts, some people buy plastic shaped eggs and you can hide Lego bits in them,” she said.

“So, you can still have an Easter egg hunt, but what they’re looking for is the pieces that make a Lego or a puzzle.

“It’s something fun that doesn’t have to be chocolate.”

Plan to solve Penrith’s parking crisis ALENA HIGGINS

hree parcels of prime public land in Penrith’s CBD will likely be sold to developers after Councillors agreed to reclassify the areas to bolster parking and future growth of the City Centre.

The lots, two of which are located in the Union Road Car Park, and a third, containing the Welch Place Car Park at 154 Henry Street, will be reclassified from ‘Community Land’ to ‘Operational Land’, to allow Council to trade, lease, licence or develop the land.

Currently, 87 per cent of the Union Road Car Park, which has been earmarked for a decked car park providing an additional 1,000 spaces, is classified as Operational Land, with the re-classification of the remaining two lots enabling Council to get optimum value for the site, according to Councillor Ross Fowler.

Cr Fowler said the city is “crying out” for extra car spaces, but a $40 million multi-storey car park financed by Council alone, was beyond its current reserve and borrowing capacity.

“The city is on the verge of a real period of expansion in terms of changing from a suburban town to an urban environment,” he said.

“And you need people with vision and people who are positive, and thankfully

The move will also allow the proposed sale of the Welch Place Car Park to the owner of the Trade Secret building, restoring access to 144 spaces on the upper level, which were closed off to the public in 2015 due to safety concerns.

However, the reclassification will remove all trusts that apply to the land requiring the provision or use of the land

for car parking and will mean the potential loss of convenient parking options.

As a direct consequence of the reclassification, 35 public spaces on the ground level of the Welch Place Car Park will be transferred to the future decked car park at Union Road, about 400 metres away or a five minute walk, as will the 187 spaces currently provided for in the City Park in Allen Place.

Councillor to oppose the motion at Monday night’s Council meeting, predicted “this is parking meters by stealth” and said Council could approve a residential development on the site instead, essentially “putting more demand on parking without replacing parking”.

However Cr Fowler said Council was completely committed to delivering a multi-storey car park within the City Centre within the next two to three years.

f you’ve ever enjoyed the crisp crunch of a Doritos corn chip, chances are the machine it was made on came from a small business in Penrith.

Souhel Khanania has seen exponential growth as he looks to hire more staff to support his successful business, Industrial Engineering Technology (IET).

State Penrith MP Stuart Ayres visited IET for a tour of the facility on Tuesday, to explore Penrith’s evolving business landscape.

“Souhel Khanania has designed a corn chip oven so technologically advanced he is cornering the world market and even selling the technology to Mexico,” Mr Ayres said.

“Now, wherever you pick up a packet of corn chips around the globe, there is a good chance they were made from an oven built in Penrith.”

For Mr Khanania, it all started with a big dream that very quickly became reality.

“We bought this factory about seven years ago,” he said.

“I’ve had my company for 25 years, we had a factory in Mt Druitt that was too small, but we’ve outgrown this too now.”

Mr Khanania currently has an architect looking at options to expand his combustion engineering business to grow with consumer demand.

“We do anything to do with baking or cooking – anything that requires heat,” he said.

“The food industry is so big that it keeps us busy. I set out not to make money, it was never about money. I wanted to show that you could really build the best of the best.

“I actually sold solutions. A lot of the equipment from overseas doesn’t have the same safety standards that we have in Australia.”

Mr Khanania set out to design a system that would comply with Australian standards while at the same time still ensure that it could produce the products required.

Having retrofitted over 200 ovens and built 40 ovens around the world, IET is a world leader in the snack food industry and is only continuing to grow.

IET attracted the attention of PepsiCo subsidiary Frito Lay, makers of Doritos, with the head of global operations recently flying to Sydney to inspect his ovens.

His patented corn chip oven is designed and made exclusively in Penrith, an incredible local success story.

he world’s best nurses come from our backyard, with a new report awarding Western Sydney University (WSU) first in Australia and fourth globally in nursing and midwifery.

The Center for World University Rankings is the largest and most comprehensive academic ranking of global universities, comparing over 26,000 higher education institutions worldwide.

In its inaugural Rankings by Subject 2017, WSU was awarded the score of 91.12, securing the prestigious global ranking.

Associate Professor Deborah Hatcher, Dean of the School of Nursing and Widwifery at WSU, said the ranking is a pleasant surprise for a young and regional university.

“It reflects the strength of the school and supports the school’s commitments,” she said.

“While this ranking is based on research outcomes, we shouldn’t lose the fact that our students are the backbone of our school.”

Ms Hatcher said nursing graduation ceremonies last Friday saw hundreds of new graduates walk across the stage with pride.

“They are the future of nursing, and that’s why our research is important,” she said.

Past graduates from WSU, Kellie Kaczorowski and Mitchell Grimston, currently work at Nepean Hospital where they use skills from their degree every day.

“It was a good adventure, I had great placements and was really lucky and had a wide variety of placements across the whole Sydney metro area,” Ms Kaczorowski said.

“They were really supportive, I actually had my son in the last year and they allowed me to be flexible.

“Now, I’ve seen it come full circle and a lot of my friends from uni are lecturing there.”

Mr Grimston praised the university for their ability to adapt to the rapidly evolving needs of nursing, saying he is proud to be in a fulfilling career.

“This is where I grew up, this is where I studied, and this is where I am helping my community,” he said.

Ms Hatcher said the recognition acknowledges the consistent hard work of WSU staff and students.

“It shows that people from western Sydney, given the opportunity, can achieve what other people can achieve, or even better,” she said.

Motorists urged to play it safe on roads Double demerits in force across the long weekend as police plan high visibility operation EMILY NEWTON

otorists are being warned that police will be on high alert across the long weekend as they try to keep the busy Easter holiday period fatality free.

Acting Commander of NSW Traffic and Highway Patrol, Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy, is urging everyone to take personal responsibility and stay alert on NSW roads over the busy school holiday and Easter period.

“With an increase in road users over the school holidays, we are urging all road users to be vigilant and responsible,” Assistant Commissioner Corboy said.

“While everyone is excited about the holidays, it is not worth the risk of speeding or driving while tired in order to get to your destination.

“We’re asking you to manage your trip, slow down, take regular breaks, avoid distractions, and ensure everyone in the vehicle is wearing a seat belt.

“It is much more important to arrive safely, than not to arrive at all.”

The NSW Government’s annual review into the state’s speed cameras has shown the overwhelming majority of fixed

A report shows that fixed speed cameras are helping to save lives on NSW roads. Police are urging motorists to be safe on the roads during the holiday period

cameras are improving safety and saving countless lives.

The 2016 report, released last week, showed that at the 110 fixed speed camera locations there has been a 92 per cent reduction in fatalities.

Roads, Maritime and Freight Minister Melinda Pavey said if the cameras fail to deliver road safety benefits, they are removed.

“Speed is the number one killer on our roads. Last year 157 people lost their lives in NSW because somebody was driving too fast,” she said.

“Speed cameras have been shown to slow down drivers and this report demonstrates that they are continuing to improve safety on our roads.”

Every dollar from speed camera revenue goes to the Community Road Safety Fund, and is spent on important road safety programs such as high visibility police operations and school zone flashing lights.

While school zones might be out of operation until next term, double demerits are in place over two weekends.

Double demerits commenced yesterday (Thursday, April 13) and will remain in force until Monday, April 17.

They’ll be back in action for ANZAC Day between April 21 and 25.

t Marys Police are appealing for public assistance to locate a man who has been missing since last month.

27-year-old Travis Clayton was last seen at about 1am on Thursday, March 30, at a home on Pages Road, St Marys.

Officers from St Marys Local Area Command were notified of his disappearance and commenced inquiries.

Police along with family hold concerns for Mr Clayton’s welfare, as his disappearance is considered to be out of character.

Mr Clayton is described as Caucasian, 170-180cm tall, of a medium build, with brown hair, brown eyes and a fair complexion.

He could be driving a white Ford Falcon with NSW registration WOE 980.

Anyone who knows of his whereabouts, or sights him, is urged to contact local police through Crime Stoppers by calling 1800 333 000 or using the online reporting page at nsw.crimestoppers. com.au.

Information provided will be treated in the strictest of confidence.

Development in case against mother on drugs charges

A Cranebrook mother-of-three facing years behind bars if convicted of the serious meth supply charges alleged against her has had her matter briefly mentioned again in court.

Serina Denise King chose not to appear before Penrith Local Court last Friday when her matter was re-mentioned for the purpose of updating the court on the status of the brief of evidence.

The prosecution advised Magistrate Georgia Knight that there was a substantial amount of the brief outstanding before requesting further balance of brief orders.

The former aged care worker, who is currently on remand at Wellington Correction Centre, was arrested in February after police began monitoring her movements and legally intercepting her calls.

She was charged with 27 offences, including ‘supply prohibited drug on an ongoing basis’, ‘deal with proceeds of crime’, ‘make, possess equipment etc to make false document’, ‘possess prohibited drug’, ‘cultivate a prohibited plant’, ‘supply restricted substance’, and ‘have goods in her custody suspected of being stolen’.

Bail was not applied for and was formally refused. She is due to face court again on May 26 after her matter was adjourned by consent.

Man who Tweeted threats to be sentenced in June

A Colyton man who threatened to slit Pauline Hanson’s throat and requested Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull deport him to Syria so he could join ISIS, has been committed to sentence after pleading guilty to using social media to menace, harass or offend.

The Joint Counter Terrorism Team swooped on Ciaron Patrick McGee at his Desborough Street home on February 1 after they were alerted to disturbing new terrorist threats online.

The 38-year-old has previously been ordered against using any communication device as part of his bail conditions following his arrest on December 3, after he allegedly used Twitter to threaten to kill high profile people, including MPs. Mr McGee, who appeared before Penrith Local Court via videolink, pleaded guilty to ‘using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend’ and ‘breach of bail’.

A further charge of ‘using a carriage service to threaten to kill’ was withdrawn by the prosecution and subsequently dismissed, enabling the two remaining charges to be dealt summarily in the Local Court.

The offender’s lawyer requested a full pre-sentence report and Justice Health report, however Magistrate Stephen Corry said there was no way a Justice Health report would be prepared in time given the backlog, suggesting she organise a private psychologist report instead.

“You’re not going to get a Justice Health report,” Magistrate Corry said.

Mr McGee is due back in court for sentence on June 2.

Man on underage sex charges set to enter guilty pleas

A young Penrith man charged with multiple underage sex offences is scheduled to formally enter his guilty pleas during an arraignment next month.

Wearing a cream polo shirt, his blond hair neatly styled, Christopher Grover appeared in the dock of Penrith Local Court last Friday where he was committed to sentence.

The 19-year-old has pleaded guilty to intentionally procuring a 15-year-old for unlawful sexual activity, having sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old, and having sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old in company.

A pre-sentence report has been ordered.

The crimes against the female teen are said to have taken place in Penrith in August last year.

During the mention, a final order was

also made in respect of a two-year AVO for the protection of the victim.

He is due to face Penrith District Court for arraignment on May 5.

Man pleads guilty to drug supply charges

A meth supplier caught dealing in Colyton has been committed to sentence after pleading guilty to supplying a prohibited drug.

Mohammed Yusuf Yari faced Penrith Local Court via videolink from custody last Friday.

He pleaded guilty to supplying 15.17 grams of the prohibited drug at Colyton on November 4, 2016 and guilty to possessing a prohibited weapon without a permit.

However, he maintained his innocence in respect to a ‘deal with the proceeds of crime’ charge, with the matter set down for hearing on July 9.

In the meantime, he is due to face Penrith District Court for arraignment, where he is due to formally enter his guilty pleas, on June 19.

He did not apply for bail and bail was formally refused.

Jail time for man involved in violent attack

A Springwood man who bashed two random men in a brutal drunken-fuelled attack has been sentenced to 32 months jail.

Jason Walshaw, 34, was supported by a large contingent of family members as he sat in the dock of Penrith Local Court awaiting his fate last Friday afternoon.

The father-of-one was arrested and charged with ‘reckless wounding’ and ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’ after he was caught on CCTV footage laying into the men at a Springwood establishment in May last year in a seemingly unprovoked attack.

The vision shows Mr Walshaw punching the first victim hard to the face, knocking him back onto the pool table.

When the victim’s friend comes to his aid, he himself is knocked to the ground where Mr Walshaw proceeds to kick him in the ribs, at one stage using a bar stool as a weapon.

The harrowing incident lasts for several minutes until Mr Walshaw’s friend, who tried valiantly to get him to stop, finally succeeds.

While no audio can be heard, and with Mr Walshaw indicating the first victim had been making derogatory comments about his friend, the prosecution pointed out he could only find one “identifiable contact” between the offender and the first victim prior to the assault. “[The first victim] spends most of the time at the other end of the room playing pool and is the first to be attacked, and the most viciously,” he said.

Victim number one sustained about $23,000 worth of dental damage, while his friend suffered six broken ribs and an impacted tooth, the court heard.

While it was his first time in custody, Mr Walshaw had a history of violence and was on a Section 9 good behaviour bond for a domestic violence assault at the time of the attack, which Magistrate Georgia Knight labelled a “seriously aggravating feature”.

He was also charged and pleaded guilty to ‘deem supply’ after police found 13 vacuum sealed bags of cannabis at his home.

Magistrate Knight accepted it wasn’t premeditated or planned, that Mr Walshaw had expressed some amount of remorse and was suffering from anxiety and depression at the time, but said he needed to be severely punished by the courts.

“Mr Walshaw did engage in an unprovoked, fairly random attack with very little excuse,” she said.

“It does require a severe penalty to be imposed.”

With time already served, he will be eligible for release on parole on June 25, 2018.

Penrith: Police suspect unit fire was deliberately lit

A fire that broke out in a Penrith unit block on Tuesday night is being treated as suspicious.

A spokesperson from Penrith Police said that the block was held as a crime scene the night of the fire and returned to residents the following day.

“It caused extensive damage to one of the units,” the spokesperson said.

“Several surrounding units were also affected by the smoke, but received no further damage.”

At about 6.25pm, police and Fire and Rescue NSW were called to the Torton Place property.

The building was evacuated and one woman in her 40s was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation, but no persons were injured.

Police are currently investigating the cause of the fire.

Man arrested after evading police following chase

A 29-year-old Cranebrook man has been arrested on the Central Coast following a police pursuit in Penrith last week.

The man failed to stop for police after his car almost collided with another vehicle at about 2.50pm on Friday, April 7.

Police commenced a pursuit of the driver who travelled through a number of streets in Penrith, reaching speeds of more than 100km/h in 50km/h zones.

Both vehicles stopped at traffic lights on the cross of Parker Street and the Great Western Highway at Kingswood where it will be alleged the driver reversed into the police car causing damage.

One officer was injured and needed to be treated at Nepean Hospital.

An officer attempted to arrest the driver, but he was able to evade police.

The second occupant of the car, a woman, was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station.

The car was found to be unregistered and uninsured.

The next day, April 8, the driver was arrested on the Central Coast.

His bail was refused, and he was charged with ‘using weapon to avoid apprehension’, ‘driving while disqualified’, ‘police pursuit’ and two counts of ‘shoplifting’.

He appeared in Wyong Local Court on Wednesday. The injured officer is now back at work.

South Penrith: Officer shoots dog after fearing for safety

A dog was fatally shot by a police officer after it charged at him at a residence on Pindari Drive, South Penrith.

A single male officer attended the location for an unrelated matter when the dog charged.

Fearing for his safety, the officer deployed capsicum spray on the dog, which had no effect.

Three shots were fired by the officer, and police have confirmed the dog has died as a result.

St Clair: Police find taser disguised as a torch

A 16-year-old will be dealt with under the Young Offenders Act after police found a taser in a bag at the skate park on Bennett Road, St Clair.

On April 5 at about 8.20pm, officers were patrolling the area when they saw a group of youths run from the skate park.

Officers gave chase, and located one 14-year-old boy from St Clair who was questioned over a bag found by officers.

He informed them it was not his.

A search of the bag revealed a torch that activated a taser when a button was pressed. The youth was taken home to his parents where they had a conversation with police.

Police then attended an address in Erskine Park and had a conversation with a 16-year-old and his parents.

It is alleged the 16-year-old youth made full admissions that the bag and the taser torch were his.

Double demerits in force By now you have most probably seen or heard ads on the television, Internet or radio in regards to this year’s Easter Long Weekend double demerits campaign.

From Thursday, April 13 until Monday, April 17 double demerits will apply to the following offences: • Speeding • Illegal use of mobile phones • Not wearing a seatbelt • Riding without a helmet The rationale behind the double demerit system is that in circumstances where there is going to be a significant influx of people using the State’s roads, the risk of injury or death as a result of motor vehicle accidents increases exponentially, and so the double demerits campaign is designed to make people be more aware of their driving and think twice before committing these offences.

Most people with an unrestricted licence in NSW are allowed to accrue up to 13 demerit points within a three year period before they will be subjected to a licence suspension.

As you will see below it only takes one or two offences during a double demerits campaign, and your licence is gone.

Here is what you stand to lose this weekend in the double demerits stakes if you commit any of these offences: Exceed Speed Limit

retired Penrith woman is $100,000 richer after winning the top prize in a Lucky Lotteries Super Jackpot draw last week.

When first contacted by NSW Lotteries officials to tell her the good news, the woman hung up believing it was a scam.

“It’s a bit of a shock I can tell you,” the woman laughed.

“When someone said it was about lotteries I thought ‘oh another scam’ and hung up!”

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, purchased her winning Lucky Lotteries Super Jackpot entry at Lal’s Nextra in Westfield Penrith.

Owner Shiu Lal said the outlet was celebrating selling the winning entry and the deserving winner.

“It’s amazing! The staff are all very happy that it’s one of our regular customers,” he said.

“Congratulations to our lucky winner.

She was in tears of joy! This is what we work for, to make people happy!”

Apart from being a regular player, the woman once drew the lottery.

“About 60 years ago, they used to have a big barrel and used to draw the numbers out. They had to put me on a stool as I’m only short,” she recalled.

The happy winner is undecided what she will do with the surprise win.

“I’ve got no idea at the moment. But it will make a big difference to me,” she said.

t Marys police officers have been recognised for their hard work and dedication protecting the local community at an awards ceremony last week.

Four officers were presented with top gongs at the prestigious Police Officer of the Year Awards hosted by St Marys and Wallacia Rotary Clubs on Wednesday, April 5.

Sergeant Mark Harvey, Senior Constable Daniel Peen, Constable Jermaine Whitly and Constable Alexandra Smith were met with warm congratulations and applause from local Rotary members, councillors, MPs and colleagues for their unwavering commitment.

at St Marys deserve recognition for their continual dedication and hard work as they put themselves on the line for the safety of the community.

“The calibre of the staff that we have at St Marys is so high that if I had the choice of picking a winner, I’d pick everyone for the work that they do,” he said.

Senior Constable Peen was awarded the Peer award after surpassing expectations in proactively tracking down local shoplifters, even arresting one perpetrator while off duty.

“I turn up to work every day and I love it, I really do,” Snr Cst Peen said.

“It doesn’t matter whether it’s on duty or off duty, I do this to keep the peace and make sure that everyone walks the streets safe.”

His colleague Constable Whitly received the Community Award after swift and

empathetic actions resolving a domestic incident in Colyton, where an armed teen was likely to harm himself or others.

His infectious laughter filled the room as he was humbled by the award, thanking Rotary, his peers, the community, his mother and his wife.

“I had to check the envelope and make sure it wasn’t an Oscars moment there,” he laughed.

“We get into this job for a number of reasons.

“At the end of the day, we’re here to keep the peace for the community, and I will continue to do that.”

Constable Smith won the Probationary Constable Award for her work on a domestic violence case, and Sergeant Harvey, who was unable to attend the ceremony, was awarded the Leadership Award.

Ratepayers left to foot expensive legal bills after failed court cases ALENA HIGGINS

enrith Council has vowed to put pressure on the Attorney General and Minister for Planning to change laws to protect Council and ratepayers against costly litigation appeals after it was left high and dry by an unincorporated entity.

It comes after Protect Penrith Action Group Inc (Protect Penrith) unsuccessfully challenged Council’s decisions to approve two Muslim places of worship at Kemps Creek in late 2014.

During Monday night’s Ordinary meeting, Councillors resolved to initiate debt recovery proceedings against Protect

Penrith to try and claw back almost $100,000 in legal fees owed to it after two appeals brought by the group were dismissed in court.

Council also indicated it would conduct wind up action if the group doesn’t have sufficient funds to pay.

Councillor Greg Davies said given the Land and Environment Court’s attitude that applicants of public interest matters should not be deterred by having to secure the costs of the other party up front, Council should write to the State Government to see if it would give consideration to underwriting costs in dismissed legal cases.

“Any unincorporated body can challenge a decision and take us to court and lose

and we’re up for hundreds of thousands of dollars,” he said.

Councillor Kath Presdee agreed, saying it was essentially ratepayers who suffered and were stuck with the bill.

“One of the difficulties when you are the defendant in litigation is that you are at the whim of the applicant,” she said.

“We should be able to recover that money.”

Since the judgments, Council has attempted to negotiate an amount of costs with Protect Penrith’s Solicitor, but an agreement has been unable to be reached.

A letter sent to Protect Penrith’s Solicitor in December 2016 requesting payment of Council’s costs has received no response.

Council also resolved to write to the Department of Fair Trading seeking advice as to the results of the investigation into Protect Penrith failing to provide auditing accounts under the relevant Act, despite Protect Penrith having raised money through donations from Penrith

Councillor Greg Davies ratepayers. In the early stages of the cases, Protect Penrith offered to pay Council’s costs up to $15,000 only, but that offer was rejected on the basis that the amount was well below what Council would expect to outlay in the proceedings.

The Weekender reached out to Protect Penrith President, Rick Putra, for comment but did not receive a response by deadline.

The NBN Future of Sport report, conducted by The Gemba Group, uncovers the new ways Australians are embracing the digital world.

Local father of two and sports fanatic, Andrew Farrell, said the reliability of NBN has his family watching all the sport they could dream of.

“Given the travel time and costs involved, my boys and I can’t always get to matches in other cities,” he said.

“We often watch footy and soccer on TV or stream online.

“Having a fast broadband connection that allows us to stream local and international sport means we’re able to create our own version of the city in the comfort of our own home.

“Up until we had the NBN, when I was on ADSL, it was really unreliable.”

Highlighting Australia’s endless appetite for sport, the report reveals that more than two million regional Australians are

Mr Farrell said the ability for his sons to stream shows gives them the ability to be social, or gives them space if they need it.

“It is good that they can be in their own rooms apart from each other and get that little bit of privacy and that downtime,” he said.

Mr Farrell argues that just because they’re watching more, doesn’t mean they are any less active.

“It’s no different to when I was growing up with my brother,” he said.

“They love their sport and their soccer, they get in the yard to play and they can name all the players.”

Racing back on track as ban is officially dumped EMILY NEWTON

reyhound racing is back on track after the NSW Government committed $41 million over five years to develop a sustainable industry.

Last week, State Parliament repealed the ban on greyhound racing and introduced reforms to improve the industry focusing on integrity and animal welfare.

The industry was granted a stay of execution by the State Government after former Premier Mike Baird initially announced plans to shut down the entire industry.

Richmond Race Club General Manager, Brad Adam, said the repeal means the greyhound industry has a life after July 1.

“All greyhound participants can breathe a sigh of relief and focus on getting our industry back to where it should be,” he said.

“There was a reform panel put in place, and they put forward 122 recommendations, 121 have been accepted.

“All of those recommendations have the full support of the industry.”

Key recommendations include CCTV cameras at all public and certain private tracks, whole-of-life registration and tracking of greyhounds, and tougher penalties for animal welfare abuse cases.

Mr Adam said Richmond Race Club has been operating with CCTV cameras for almost three years, and welcomes the change for more transparency in the greyhound industry.

“We fully support that, as we need to be better at governing and looking after our tracks,” he said.

“This is a great step moving forward, so people are held accountable.”

The $41 million package will be split to spend $11 million creating a new integrity commission and $30 million improving animal welfare standards.

“Does the industry think it’s enough?

Probably not,” Mr Adam said.

“But from six months ago to now, it’s a great stepping stone for us.”

Mr Adam said that getting to this point had been a “long battle” due to misinformation and long stalemates.

“The biggest hurdle was public opinion,” he said.

“By no means are we getting away from the small element in our industry that did the wrong thing, but there is a small element in every industry that does the wrong thing.”

Despite the challenges, Mr Adam said the popularity of the greyhound industry has continued to grow, shown through rising wagering figures.

I must take exception to Troy Dodds’ editorial ‘Time to stop giving Latham a platform’ (Weekender April 7). Quite the opposite. Recently we have seen the attempts to limit free speech in our society and this movement must stop and now. Public speakers afraid to visit Australia, Muslim leaders advocating the literal word of the Koran regarding the corporal punishment of women and a number of instances of student radicalisation within our public school system. People such as Mark Latham and Senator Pauline Hanson must be heard as anecdotal evidence indicates that they have a large following in the electorate. My opinion is that Mr Dodds has deliberately written such a controversial editorial in the hope of attracting readers’ comments. Well, here’s mine, Mr Dodds.

Safety concerns This is ridiculous. I noticed this affect a double semi trailer today. He then instead did an illegal u-turn to use the stop on the other side! Drivers are now more at risk of falling asleep, being done for going over hours and/or in this particular case done for an illegal u-turn to try and do the right thing and have a break! How is this helping our road safety? As a local member of the public I’m a bit concerned about drivers driving in and around my area exhausted because the rest stop is closed!

Baking up a win: CWA members progress to State Competition

Funds will ensure more meals are delivered to most vulnerable EMILY NEWTON

he thought of making 100 hot meals a night might be exhausting for most, but Lana and Roger Borg of Mama Lana’s Community Foundation (MLCF) couldn’t imagine spending their nights any other way.

Their dedication has been recognised by Penrith MP Stuart Ayres, who presented MLCF with a grant of $20,130 through the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership program.

The grant will allow for the construction and installation of a combined freezer and cool room, to offer an increased capacity for food storage.

“It’s replacing seven freezers and four fridges, hopefully it will reduce the power bill too,” Ms Borg laughed.

“We make 600 meals a week, and that’s just the hot meals.

“The freezer will enable us to receive more food. What doesn’t fit in our freezer, has to go straight out. This will help to reduce waste.”

MLCF is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to helping homeless and disadvantaged people in the Penrith community, offering meals six nights a week as well as toiletry packs, clothing, books and blankets.

enrith’s Country Women’s Association (CWA) members are baking up a storm as they get ready for the CWA State Competition in May. Beating tough competition in Lawson last month, the Penrith branch of CWA took home the first prize Group Trophy for cooking and craft.

Hilda Laib, Penrith CWA Handicraft Officer, said the room was full of winning smiles, cakes and craft.

“You’ve got all sorts of different cakes there,” she said.

Ms Laib added that while they’re well known for their delicious baked goods, the CWA is also heavily involved in the local community.

“Everybody just thinks we make 40,000 scones at the Easter Show, but we don’t just make delicious scones and cream,” she laughed.

“We’re also involved in what goes on in our country including helping the Royal Flying Doctor Service and sponsoring local schools.”

The CWA is the largest women’s organisation in Australia and has dedicated itself to improving conditions for country women and children.

Stuart Ayres presented Roger and Lana Borg with a cheque for the installation of a freezer and cool room to help Mama Lana’s Community Foundation providing morning tea and lunch packs to disadvantaged students at a local high school, with feedback from staff incredibly positive.

Mr Ayres said improving the infrastructure of MLCF will ensure even more people can be helped by the charity.

“It was my pleasure to recommend this project for funding to assist Mama Lana’s with much-needed improvements to their food storage system,” he said.

“Just putting some consistency into a person’s life can make a world of difference.”

Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries we see as podiatrists.

With the start of the cooler weather, we see people getting off the lounge. In our runners, walkers, netball players, footballers, soccer players and other winter athletes we see an increase in these injuries. The uneven grass tracks and fields provide the perfect place for a common ankle sprain.

The most common ligaments damaged in sprained ankles are the ones on the outside of the ankle.

What happens next?

Initially, you will get swelling to the area, bruising, limitation in movement and pain with walking. The degree of injury can range from mild to severe.

Treatment will be similar regardless of the severity of sprain. A more severe injury will take longer to heal and return to sport will be slower.

With the acute injury (the first two to three days) it is important to ice to help with pain, compression and elevation will help limit swelling, and limit weight bearing.

It is essential to walk as normally as

possible whether it is with or without crutches. A boot is not recommended if there is no fracture.

Even a small avulsion fracture can be treated the same as a more significant ankle sprain.

When can I get back to sport?

Knowing which of these ligaments has been injured helps us determine the severity of the sprain, and how long it will likely take to get back in the game: • Grade I injuries typically involve just the Anterior Talofibular ligament, and often take one to two weeks to recover

• Grade II injuries involve both the Anterior Talofibular ligament and Calcaneofibular ligaments, and can take between four to six weeks to recover • While Grade III injuries typically involve a bit of everything, and can take up to 12 weeks to rehabilitate. If there is an associated tendon rupture of the muscles on the outside of your ankle, you will require a surgical consult. In this situation, surgery may or may not be needed.

Are grapes, sultanas and raisins really toxic to our pets?

Chocolate is not the only thing you have to keep away from your dog this Easter weekend...

Apart from chocolate, the other dangerous food commonly in our houses during Easter is hot cross buns.

Many people are unaware that grapes, raisins and sultanas are all potentially toxic, causing life threatening kidney failure. The toxic compound and the toxic dose are both unknown. There have been investigations to assess if fungal, pesticide, and heavy-metal contamination of grapes is the cause. At this stage, no link has been proven. Drying and cooking the grape does not change its toxicity. Some animals seem to be very susceptible to toxicity and others seem to have no issues even with ingestion of a large quantity of the fruit. Both cats and dogs can be affected but it is seen more commonly in dogs. Grape toxicity has only been recognised relatively recently.

Most dogs will vomit within a few hours of ingestion. Partially digested raisins or grapes are often seen in the vomit, faeces or both.

As the damage to the kidneys develops, anorexia, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and lethargy are seen. Within 24 hours to several days after ingestion, kidney

enzymes will be elevated. As damage continues either oliguric kidney failure (increased urine production) or anuric kidney failure (no urine production) occurs. Some animals will show gastro intestinal signs for weeks after ingestion.

If ingestion is recent, medication can be given to make the dog vomit. Activated charcoal can be given to help absorb the toxin.

Intravenous fluid therapy is given to help flush the kidneys for 48-72 hours.

Daily blood testing to assess kidney levels are required.

If the levels remain normal after 72

hours, it is unlikely that kidney failure will develop. If kidney failure does develop in addition to fluid therapy, medications to stimulate urine production and dialysis may be required.

Recognising ingestion and treating early gives the best chance of success, however the prognosis is guarded if kidney failure develops.

As with most things prevention is better than cure, so please be careful with grapes, raisins and sultanas around your pets.

If ingestion occurs seek veterinary attention immediately.

The most important message I try to instil is, that financial planning is not a luxury for the rich, but a service that should be viewed as essential for all of us.

The misconception about this arises from the fact that most people see the primary role of a financial advisor is to invest money. The logical conclusion being that, if you don’t have money to invest, then you don’t need a financial planner.

This is not the case. In simple terms, the role of the financial advisor is to help you identify goals and develop strategies to utilise your assets and income to achieve these goals.

I’ll share a client story to demonstrate how a financial planner can help you achieve your goals.

About five or six years ago a client came to us at the urging of a friend, she was actually embarrassed to come and thought she was wasting our time.

We went through our usual process and discovered she had several credit cards and about $20,000 of debt, paying $4,000 a year in interest. Not ideal, but not fatal.

She earned good money, but was a bit of

a spender, and didn’t really know where her money was going. She also had three different Super funds.

When I asked her what she wanted to achieve, she said she wanted to be out of debt. This is important, but it is a very narrow goal. We addressed it, but this was only the start.

We identified what was important to her on an ongoing basis.

What did she like to do with her time on a daily and weekly basis? What did she want to achieve lifestyle-wise in the near future? What did she want to achieve in the long term?

The client gave a list of ongoing things she loved to do. One that I remember well is she loved to go to concerts. We looked at what she was spending money on compared to what was important to her – they didn’t align.

The client told me she wanted to go to the Burning Man festival in the US, but at this stage it was only a dream. She also wanted to buy a house in the long term, she thought this was impossible.

We addressed the debt and consolidated into a loan at a much lower interest rate and created a period of time that the loan would be repaid. We also consolidated the Super funds. This is the technical, boring stuff that people normally associate with financial planning.

things that the client enjoyed and were of most importance, including an allowance for regular concerts.

Although she was spending less on an ongoing basis, her standard of living increased. We allocated some income for her trip to the Burning Man festival with the savings.

Once the debt was repaid, the money that was used to repay the debt, was now being used to save for a house.

Fast forward to now. The client has loved her life over the last six years.

She has seen loads of concerts, went to Burning Man and is now debt-free. She also put a deposit on a house just before Christmas. A financial planner does far more than just invest money.

Too busy to cook? Try these handy kitchen cheats!

We all lead busy lives and sometimes dinner is given a low priority by the time we’re home from work.

But with these handy hints, it can get easier...

Cooking can be fun, but when you add in a busy work schedule and family commitments it can become a painful experience.

So this week I’ve got some tips on how to make life easier in the kitchen.

• When preparing vegetables try stirfrying, which is the quickest, easiest way to cook vegetables. Remember to cook at a high heat and if you want to cut down on the oil try using a spray oil instead.

• Cook up a big batch of baked vegetables – like pumpkin – then store them in the fridge to use in cold meals such as salads and wraps. Add them to leftover cold cooked pasta along with baby spinach or rocket and salad dressing to make a delicious pasta salad.

• Make a batch of chilli or seasoned mince that can be reheated for a range of Mexican dishes like tacos, nachos or burrito bowls.

• Instead of throwing out those vegetables that get left on the plate at dinner

time, try using them the next day in an omelette.

• Meats like lamb and chicken from a Sunday roast work well as hot or cold sandwich fillings.

• If you eat rice often then consider investing in a rice cooker. This way you’ll get perfect rice every time and can focus your attention on cooking the rest of your meal.

• When you can’t be bothered waiting 20 minutes for rice to cook try rice noodles instead. They only need a few minutes in boiling water and can be used in hot dishes like noodle stir fries or cold dishes like rice paper rolls and Asian salads.

• Use up overripe fruits in baked goods like muffins and banana breads, or blend and freeze into cubes for smoothies.

• Boil a heap of potatoes, shallow fry half to make homemade chips and keep the rest in the fridge to mix with mayo and capers for a delicious potato salad.

• Now that we’re coming into the colder weather it’s the perfect time to make up a big batch of soup, which can be frozen or taken to work in a thermos.

• Consider purchasing frozen vegetables. They are just as nutritious as fresh vegetables and the prep work is already done.

his career with Penrith after signing a new five-year deal with the club last week. The contract is for the next four seasons with a fifth year option in Whare’s favour. Essentially, he’ll be at the Panthers until at least the end of the 2022 season, by which time he’ll be 32 and most likely weighing up potential retirement. As I hinted last week, a number of clubs would have been interested in Whare’s signature for next season but it’s understood the Kiwi international made it clear that he wanted to stay with the Panthers even if there were suggestions he could earn more elsewhere. “I have a long-standing gratitude towards Dean for agreeing to trust us with his career when he joined us from Manly in 2013,” Panthers boss Phil Gould said. “It gives us great pride to know that Dean’s first preference is to be part of Panthers for the remainder of his career.”

» Whare’s re-signing does put a question

mark over the future of fellow Kiwi Peta Hiku. While he’s been proving his versatility lately by coming off the bench, the 24-year-old may struggle to earn a new deal at Penrith when his contract expires at the end of next season. The Panthers have locked up backs Waqa Blake (2019), Matt Moylan (2021), Tyrone Peachey (2019), Dallin Watene-Zelezniak (2020) and now Whare to long-term deals, and have Josh Mansour coming off contract at the same time as Hiku. As long as he comes back OK from injury, Mansour will be the priority signing over Hiku.

» While he was dropped back to reserve grade last week, the Panthers are still working on a new deal for powerhouse forward Viliame Kikau. The 22-year-old Fijian doesn’t have a club for next year but he’s essentially next in line outside CEO Brian Fletcher’s office.

to avoid Origin talk but he admits he’d love another crack at the game’s biggest arena. The 31-year-old probably thought Origin football had passed him by given his last Blues jumper was in 2009, but he’s now very much in the frame to wear the number nine jersey for Laurie Daley this year. “I would love to get another shot at it,” Wallace told Extra Time.

“There’s a lot of water to go under the bridge. It’s only round six so it’s not for another two months or so. There’s a lot of footy to be played between now and then.”

T

hey say statistics tell the story of a rugby league team’s fortunes and while there’s always evidence to defy what’s written on paper, the numbers do give you a general idea of what’s happening – or not happening – on the field.

And the numbers tell a slightly concerning story about a Penrith side that despite all the pre-season hype, has now won just two of its opening six games.

After six rounds the Panthers are third in penalties conceded, fourth in errors, fourth in missed tackles, 11th in kick return metres and last in total kicks.

It paints a picture of a footy side that

struggles to build momentum and pressure in matches. Possession is not Penrith’s issue – they actually had more of the footy than the Rabbitohs and Storm but still lost those games – it’s moreso what impact the side has with the football when they’ve got it.

In short, the Panthers have plenty of opportunities but too often fail to convert them.

Penrith is in a frustrating position – they are playing themselves into contention in every match but then aren’t sure what to do when it comes time to land the killer blow. Too often the side takes the wrong option on the last play, or pops a ball that shouldn’t be popped.

Perhaps it’s a sign of inexperience. The Panthers have been dealt their fair share of injuries this year and combined with a couple of off-field issues have struggled to field the same team consistently every

week, forcing re-shuffles that probably weren’t anticipated at any stage of the pre-season.

Whatever the reason, the Panthers need to turn it around soon. We can only use the ‘it’s still early’ line for so long.

The games don’t get any easier for Penrith with this weekend’s clash against defending Premiers Cronulla coming after they knocked off Melbourne in atrocious conditions at AAMI Park. It was a war of attrition and full of errors but still a great game to watch and the Sharks showed incredible patience to eventually wrestle the competition points away and prove they still might have plenty to say about this year’s title.

It’s hard to gauge much from Penrith’s 21-20 loss to Souths last Friday night given the disruptions to the playing squad through the week but it was the defence of the side’s more established players that

raised some concerns. Dallin WateneZelezniak missed six tackles, Dean Whare missed five and Trent Merrin missed six as well. They’re concerning stats and show how easy the Rabbitohs made metres at various stages of the game, but perhaps the players in question were guilty of trying too hard given the key men Penrith had out.

The good news for Penrith is that they are almost back to full strength this week, welcoming back Matt Moylan and Waqa Blake from reserve grade and naming Tyrone Peachey and James Fisher-Harris to return from injury. There’s also a chance Bryce Cartwright will play his first football since round 2.

The Sharks pose a huge threat but with the big names back on deck, there’s every reason the Panthers can resurrect their season this Easter Sunday.

t finished in heartbreaking circumstances but Malakai WateneZelezniak will never forget his first grade debut.

At 25, he had every right to think his dreams of playing first grade for Penrith would be left in the backyard at home.

Rugby league has a funny way of delivering on dreams, however, and following well-publicised circumstances, Malakai made his debut on the hallowed turf of Penrith Stadium last weekend.

“It was everything I expected it to be and more,” he told Extra Time after the 21-20 loss to Souths.

“I’ve always dreamed about this as a kid, coming to this exact stadium and watching first grade and dreaming that one day I would be able to be out there as well.

“I got to achieve that and there’s just no words that are able to describe it properly.”

To make his debut alongside his brother Dallin made it even more special. He even sent his younger brother over for a try in the first half.

“It was no surprise at all that he got that ball to me – we’ve done it plenty of times in the backyard at home,” Dallin told Extra Time.

“When he got through I thought I should back him up and I’m lucky I did as he got the ball to me for the try.”

Dallin has achieved plenty in his short time in the game but playing alongside his brother is something he’ll never forget.

“It’s probably the most treasured moment in my career,” he said “It’s one that I will never forget. It’s been a dream of ours since we were kids to play football. We sort of thought it was far fetched but to be able to be here today and play alongside each other is a dream come true.”

He’s back at Pepper Stadium this week, but this time it’ll be in front of far less people as Penrith’s reserve grade side tackle Newtown on Saturday morning.

“I feel so honoured and privileged to be able to wear this jersey so anything after this is a bonus,” he said.

“Whatever is best for the team and the

club moving forward I’m more than happy with. Whether I’m in the side or not next week, I’ll support the boys and this club all the way.”

In the 51-season history of the Panthers, dozens of players have only ever played one first grade match. Most of them have been forgotten in history, but one gets the feeling Malakai Watene-Zelezniak’s (so far) single game for Penrith will be remembered for a long time to come.

anthers forward Sitaleki Akauola’s distinct running style – where it looks like he’s charging through a brick wall on every carry – has turned him into a cult figure of the game this season.

Recently, the 25-year-old former Tongan international caught the attention of popular FOX League commentator Andrew Voss, who tweeted before last Friday’s game against the Rabbitohs: “My anticipated highlight tonight… Sitaleki Akauola’s first hit up”.

When asked by Extra Time this week what goes through his mind before charging into the defensive line, Akauola said it doesn’t faze him.

That’s right – whether it’s hit up one of the afternoon or hit up 10, they are all just as tough and hard as the next.

Despite league-wide fears of concussion and head knocks these days, Akauola said it’s his job as a Panther to put his body on the line for his team and fans.

“I just do whatever I can to contribute to the team,” he said.

“When you’re in a team it’s not my body anymore, it’s the team’s body.”

Last Friday, Akauola returned from a hyper extended elbow and torn deltoid muscle to take his place in the team.

While an injury like that could keep others sidelined for weeks, Akauola only missed one game – proving he’ll do whatever it takes to help his team out of an early season slump.

“Everyone is still confident, all those close losses that we’ve had – everyone is taking something out of it,” Akauola said.

“Everyone here is really close and when a team like this is backing each other, I guess it will all pay off at the end of the season.”

Penrith suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Rabbitohs last round and will no doubt want to make amends for a rough start to the season this Easter Sunday.

Akauola said he’s looking forward to bouncing back against last year’s defending Premiers, Cronulla.

“Hopefully we send the Sharkies back to the Shire with nothing,” he said with a smile.

Panthers being hurt by missed opportunities

I

managed to get out to another Panthers game last Friday and, I must say, that I’m seeing a team out there that knows where they are going but it’s their execution at crucial times that’s hurting them.

Sometimes you can be in excellent form where those things don’t hurt you as much but, at the moment, Penrith seem to be able to get up the other end of the field but fail to convert at crucial times.

This results in the team getting frustrated and that’s when things can go very, very wrong.

Penrith enjoyed plenty of media hype before a ball was even kicked but, as far as I’m concerned, you need to be starting the year strong and then your hype builds as you go.

I truly believe if captain Matt Moylan played against the Rabbitohs last week, Penrith win – I really do.

It was disappointing he and the others weren’t there but coach Anthony Griffin and the club made a strong stand regarding culture and that’s what their standards are.

Everyone’s expecting Moylan to have a big game on Sunday after being dropped

last week but I hope he feels he doesn’t necessarily have to.

Let me explain.

It’s human instinct that after you do something wrong, you want to prove to your parents, coach or whoever that you want to do something right.

Moylan, Waqa Blake and Peta Hiku (if he plays) just need to come back this weekend and play their own game.

Moylan needs to do what he does best every week, he doesn’t need to over play his hand or try and do anything different, while I think Penrith really missed Blake and his ability to trouble the defence when he drifts across the field with his big, long strides.

Penrith have had a rough start to the season and if they go down this Sunday to the Cronulla Sharks, it’s going to be a long way back especially if they lose players to rep footy over the next few months.

Over the next month or so, the Panthers should aim to win three out of four games and then the following month another three from four then, all of a sudden, they’ve won six and lost two and they’ve evened up the ledger.

For the time being, Penrith need to worry

about this week and set small goals for themselves because, with such a talented roster, you can see them going on a roll like they did last season.

At the moment, all the parts are there but it’s just not happening. Penrith need to be patient and realise they’ve had some injuries to start the season as well as stuff

It’s going to be a different Panthers team with all their players back this week and I’m tipping they can knock off the defending Premiers and cause an upset on Easter Sunday.

The next three games could decide Penrith’s season

A

wise rugby league man once said that you can’t win the competition in April but you can sure lose it.

Anybody connected with the Panthers, Eels or Tigers is hoping not to bump into him around about now, as it might remind them that here they are, with Easter upon us, and all three western Sydney teams off to slow starts in the 2017 title race.

Two wins and four losses isn’t a disaster by any stretch, but it puts each of those teams in a predicament where they have to at least win as many games as they lose for the medium-term to make sure they keep the top eight within reach.

The Eels and Tigers know that at least one of them will have three wins by the time the holiday weekend finishes, as the two of them go head-to-head at ANZ Stadium on Monday.

It’s a different story for the Panthers, who meet the in-form defending Premiers Cronulla Sharks on Easter Sunday, before rounding out the month of April with games against Parramatta and Brisbane.

When you toss the ‘curfew-breaker’

drama into the mix, along with the fact that Penrith has shown only fleeting glimpses of their 2016 form to this point of the season, it becomes a three-game stretch that has the potential to kill off the Panthers’ premiership hopes before we hit winter.

The worst-case scenario – losing all three games – would put their record at two wins and seven losses.

Just to scrape into the top eight from there would mean having to win 10 of their last 15 games.

It’s achievable, should they find themselves in that predicament, but history has proven that you can’t win the premiership from the bottom of the top eight.

And make no mistake: this season for the Panthers wasn’t about being content with a finals appearance, it was about being one of the serious challengers for the right to be doing a victory lap on the first Sunday in October.

There’s no reason that can’t still happen, but the results over the next three weeks are crucial if Penrith isn’t to look back on 2017 as a wasted opportunity.

e’s now the man in charge of turning around Wests Tigers, but there was plenty of conjecture over Ivan Cleary’s appointment at the Penrith Panthers when it was announced during a turbulent 2011 season.

On June 29, 2011, just weeks after giving Matt Elliott his marching orders and replacing him with interim coach Steve Georgallis, Phil Gould called a press conference at Panthers HQ. As the Weekender reported in its July 1 edition: “The turbulent year for the Penrith Panthers off the field in the NRL has continued, with Phil Gould dramatically naming Ivan Cleary as the club’s

new head coach on Wednesday. Cleary’s appointment comes despite Steve Georgallis taking over as head coach from Matthew Elliott just last week. Georgallis was expected to be given at least a few weeks to prove he may be the man to take over permanently, but Gould was able to secure Cleary, leaving Georgallis out in the cold for next season.”

Gould spoke of how he was able to lure Cleary despite a contract being in place at the Warriors.

“He was on contract [with the Warriors] for the next 12 months and any discussions I had with Ivan were from 2013 and beyond,” Gould said.

“It’s only really been in the last 72 hours that this opportunity has presented itself. I thank the Warriors for their understanding in this.”

At the press conference, Gould was full of praise for Georgallis and said he expected the players to put in for him for the remainder of the season.

“Steve is going to be a very good coach,” he said.

“Any club who picks up Steve, if he is not at the Panthers, picks up a good man.”

It’s never been totally made clear why Cleary was keen to get out of his deal at the Warriors to take on one of the toughest tasks in the NRL, but it’s understood issues behind the scenes were causing him grief.

On the record at least, the Warriors were wishing him well.

“We’re excited for Ivan that he has this opportunity at this stage of his career and we’re grateful to him for the fantastic contribution he has made to the Vodafone Warriors,” said CEO, Wayne Scurrah, after the announcement.

Ironically, the Warriors would later end up with Matthew Elliott as their coach – but the relationship was not to last. As for Cleary, he too bit the dust, axed after the 2015 NRL season.

recently attended a seminar at my children’s school on ‘Growth Mindset’. This concept was developed by psychologist Carol Dweck and described in her book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. According to Dweck, “In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits”. Conversely, “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work – brains and talent are just the starting point”.

Although this concept is being adopted in education, there are applications for this in all areas of life, including business. Imagine if the qualities you thought were ‘fixed’ can be changed?

What if focusing on a growth mindset meant that you become less worried about looking ‘smart’ and put more energy into learning and changing?

A key component of growth mindset is focusing on the effort, and praising the learning and progress that has been made, not just the end result. It is about encouraging appropriate risk-taking,

with the knowledge that some risks won’t be successful.

You might think that because you’re flexible or have a positive outlook that you already have a growth mindset.

Or you might wonder how, when you are your own boss, that you can praise yourself for your efforts?

Ideally, having a coach or mentor who espouses this concept, is a great asset. However, you can still practice and consciously change your thoughts and actions to achieve change in this area. For example, if you hear yourself saying “I can’t do this!”, change your words and thinking to “I can’t do this YET”. When faced with a challenging situation, resist the urge to feel insecure or defensive, as both of these inhibit growth.

Learn to talk to your ‘fixed mindset persona’: if it is telling you “this situation is insurmountable”, talk back to it and persuade it to find a way forward.

And importantly, reward yourself when you have learnt something new. Try new strategies, understand that some won’t work, and learn from setbacks.

here are pros and cons to running a home-based business, and school holidays can be a very difficult time for those who have schoolaged children. Suddenly your routine is thrown into disarray, so it’s important to restore some order to retain productivity.

Home office set-up • Set office hours for your clients and your family, and communicate those hours • Ideally have a separate office area, so you can close yourself off from distractions • Make sure you have approval from Council to run a home-based business, and tell your insurer • Consider utilising a casual co-working space like The Creative Fringe to get some time with other businesses, or join some local networking groups Time management tips • Schedule quality time for work, rest and play – for you and your family • Consider changing your holiday exercise to include family activities like hiking • Where possible, pre-plan and

schedule ahead social media posts and blog writing • Be realistic about your to-do list and prioritise the most important tasks • Turn off notifications on social media and email, checking only at set intervals during the day • One of the benefits of being a homebased business, is that you don’t need to work office hours, but can be flexible around other activities School holiday tips • Utilise school holiday programs or have play date swaps to give you a full day child-free • Avoid scheduling large irregular chores for school holidays, it’s just adding additional pressure, unless it’s something you can involve the family with • By giving your family some quality time in the morning and over dinner, you may be able to work in the afternoon and after dinner on your business Working from home is not for everyone.

It definitely requires a fair degree of discipline.

ic Trevino Jnr. may be one of the world’s top Elvis Presley tribute artists, but his love for what he does goes beyond his admiration for

the music icon.

“I do it because I enjoy Elvis, but I also love mid-century America and a lot of the music and the culture of that time,” Vic explained.

“A lot of things started changing in the 1950s and 60s. There was a strong focus on human rights movements, in particular civil rights.

“I think Elvis really helped pushed that with his music because he was kind of the crossroad between white music and African-American music at the time.”

Vic will be bringing those early Elvis years to life on the Evan Theatre stage in the show ‘Elvis – An American Trilogy’, which is currently touring Australia for

the first time. This ultimate Elvis experience will also feature fellow tribute artists Gino Monopoli, who will recreate Elvis’ movie years and his comeback, and Steve Michaels who will channel 70s Elvis in that famous White Eagle jumpsuit.

During Vic’s time performing in some of the biggest tribute concerts in the world, including ‘Legends in Concert’, he has come across all different types of Elvis fanatics.

“You get people that get so lost in the performance, they act like they really have Elvis in front of them, they’re screaming and they’re on the floor going nuts,” he said.

“But then you also have some really passionate Elvis fans who just really don’t like Elvis tribute artists,” he laughed.

While Vic’s main focus is on the music he admits there’s often a strong drive amongst tribute artists to perfectly recreate the classic Elvis look, with some performers even going as far as plastic surgery.

What often gets forgotten is what made Elvis famous in the first place.

“You have to remember that Elvis didn’t

become famous based on the way he looked,” Vic said.

“People weren’t looking up his YouTube videos or following him on Twitter or looking at his selfies on Instagram, people were buying his records.

“He became famous around the world because of his voice.”

ountry music artist Jayne Denham is taking a break from recording her new album to pay tribute to some of the most iconic women of rock.

Jayne’s high-energy live show, titled ‘Women That Rock’, will be heading to Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, April 21.

The set list will feature classic tracks from artists including Suzie Quatro, Joan Jet, Miranda Lambert, Pat Benatar and country superstar Carrie Underwood.

Audiences will also get the chance to hear some of Jayne’s original truck-

ith the school holidays well and truly underway, there’s no better way to get your kids outdoors and active than with a spot of tennis.

The Nepean District Tennis Association (NDTA) is currently running daily school holiday classes for beginners to intermediate players at the Woodriff Gardens Tennis Centre in Penrith.

Kids aged from five to 12-years-old are invited to attend the half (9am-12pm) or full day (9am-3pm) classes, which will take place from this Tuesday, April 18

until Friday, April 21. NDTA CEO, Chris Woodland, said the school holiday classes are the perfect way for kids to get off the couch and onto the court.

“School holiday classes are designed primarily with fun in mind,” Woodland said.

“Children will receive instruction in the fundamentals of tennis, but that will be mixed in with a variety of games and other fun activities. The clinics are a great way to develop kids’ hand and eye coordination as well as other skills.”

Tennis racquets and balls can be provided by the NDTA, with kids asked to bring along their own hat, drink bottle and morning tea on the day.

The NDTA will also hold Intermediate and Advanced classes for more experienced tennis players at 5pm on Tuesday, April 18, Thursday, April 20 and Friday, April 21.

Beginning this week, players will get the first opportunity to meet NDTA’s new head coach Andrew Crawley.

“Andrew is a high performance Tennis Australia coach,” Woodland said.

“He’s coming to us from a large centre on the North Shore where he has worked the last 15 years. We are thrilled to have him on board.”

Meanwhile, Woodriff Gardens Tennis Centre will play host to the Nepean Easter Junior Open, a major Tennis Australia Junior Tournament, which kicks off today (Friday, April 14).

400 junior players, aged 12-16, from around the country will descend on Penrith for the five-day Easter long weekend event.

Mr Woodland said it was a great event.

“This is the largest tennis event in the country over the Easter period. It’s been a Nepean event for over 30 years,” Woodland said.

“We have upwards of 15 local juniors competing and I’m confident they’ll do well.”

Aussie Rules Down on troops, Rams have mixed start to AFL season winning streak along the way. Corless said losing goal scoring machine Phillip Aumann was tough to swallow.

“Phillip took an opportunity to go back and play for Narrandera in southern NSW, it’s a paid gig so he couldn’t knock back the opportunity,” he said.

“We are also missing our Best and Fairest winner from last year in Brayden Wilson, who shattered his knee cap before Christmas. And another one of our guys did his hamstring in the opening week.

“It’s been a really tough start to the season with injuries.”

Meanwhile, Penrith’s top women’s team, the Ramettes, have undergone some changes in the recent off-season after merging with the Auburn Giants for the 2017 season and beyond.

The Auburn-Penrith Giants, who play in the Ladies Premier Division, also won their first game last weekend with a 66-13 victory over the Western Wolves.

Corless said it was a spin-out seeing two former western Sydney rivals team up.

“The two teams hated each other, they had a true rivalry,” he said.

“The joint venture is in place for three years, and the main reason for it was to give our top players some experience in the premier division.”

Teams will return to action next week.

fter putting their stamp on the competition last year, the Penrith Rams are hoping to go one better this season despite losing a number of key players.

The Rams, who play in the AFL Sydney Division 2 competition, notched up their first win last weekend when they hammered Sydney University 102-50.

It was the perfect bounce back game for the local side, which went down to the highly fancied North Shore Bombers by 62 points in the opening round.

Speaking with the Weekender, Penrith Rams Chairman Greg Corless said it was a tough first outing for the Rams on very limited training.

“We were pretty poor in that first week, basically we hadn’t trained for three weeks due to all the rain,” he said.

“The coach Kevin Kirk was pretty filthy about the loss because the boys didn’t really put in a lot. Fortunately he worked them really hard last week and it all paid off with a win on Saturday.”

In conjunction with the Nepean Football Association and Blue Mountains Council, the Office of Sport will hold a girls-only clinic next Thursday, April 20 and Friday, April 21 at Knapsack Oval on Barnett Street in Glenbrook.

The two-day clinic is open to local girls aged between eight and 15-years-old, who are looking to gain some extra tips to improve their skills and ability on the football field.

Current and former W-League and Australian players will be on hand conducting the clinics including Western Sydney Wanderers stars Lorena Bugden, Victoria Guzman and Rhianna Pollicina as well as Sydney FC players Melissa Caceres and Kristina Maksuti.

At the completion of the clinic, participants are welcome to have selfies taken with the W-League players and obtain their autographs.

Around the grounds RUGBY: The season may only be two weeks young but it’s the same old story for the Penrith Emus, who were blown away by Eastwood 76-5 in Round 2 of the Shute Shield competition. The game was all but over at half-time with the Emus down 31-5 at the break. Things didn’t improve in the second half with the visitors scoring 45 unanswered points, much to the embarrassment of the home fans. This Saturday afternoon the Emus will play their third straight game at Nepean Rugby Park when they take on Warringah at 3pm.

BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers have continued their great start to the season, defeating the Sutherland Sharks 92-88 in Round 6 of the Division 1 Youth League Men’s competition. Penrith’s Sean Weekes collected 28 points while Kevin Achampong drained 27 in the narrow win. The Panthers will look to continue their good form when they take on the Maitland Mustangs in Round 7 next weekend. Meanwhile, Penrith’s Division 1 Youth League Women’s team were hammered by the Bankstown Bruins 62-45. Leading the way for Penrith was Meg Creanor on nine points. Penrith will look to bounce back when they face the Norths Bears in Round 7.

AFL: The GWS Giants are proving they are going to be tough to handle

this season after they prevailed over North Melbourne 109-67 last weekend in Tasmania. GWS will look to make it three in a row when they battle Port Adelaide this Saturday in Canberra.

NETBALL: Giants Netball remains firmly on top of the Super Netball ladder after a thrilling win over the Queensland Firebirds 55-51 last weekend. The Firebirds were right in the contest until the very end before the Giants took care of business to record their seventh win from eight games. The Giants will enjoy this weekend off due to Easter and will return next Sunday to take on the Collingwood Magpies.

RUGBY LEAGUE: The final round of the NSWRL Junior Representative season wrapped up last weekend with mixed results for Penrith’s SG Ball and Harold Matthews teams.

In the SG Ball competition, Penrith defeated South Sydney 26-14 while in the Harold Matthews competition, Penrith were smashed by the Rabbitohs 40-16. Penrith’s Harold Matthews team won’t advance to the finals after recording just two wins all year, while it’s better news for the club’s SG Ball side who will take on the Cronulla Sharks in this Saturday’s Qualifying Final at Leichhardt Oval.

t’s official: the Western Sydney Wanderers will play finals football next week after securing their place in the playoffs with a draw against Melbourne Victory last Saturday night at ANZ Stadium.

After a slow start to the season it’s been a remarkable turnaround for the Wanderers, who could finish the season as high as fifth, if they manage to defeat lowly Adelaide this weekend and Perth lose to Melbourne City.

Regardless of whether the Wanderers finish fifth or sixth by round’s end, it is confirmed that they will play in an Elimination Final on the road in either Melbourne or Brisbane.

Speaking after the 0-0 draw with secondplaced Victory, Wanderers coach Tony Popovic said it was frustrating not to put the visitors away, especially after they had a player sent off in the second half.

“The overriding feeling is that it was a good performance. We created plenty of opportunities but couldn’t put them away,” he said.

“I can’t recall them having too many opportunities and we defended well.”

The Wanderers play Adelaide at Hindmarsh Stadium this Saturday night at 7.50pm.

SPECIAL FEATURE DIESEL DIRT & TURF EXPO The right tax structure for your equipment is crucial here are three common ways to finance machinery but only one will deliver a tax deduction for the full amount of the monthly payment.

Commercial Hire Purchase (CHP) and Chattel Mortgage will typically only deliver a tax deduction of 55 cents to 65 cents for every $1 you spend in the monthly finance payments you make.

To put this in more clear terms, when you finance $100,000 over a five year term you will spend around $115,000 including interest. Of that $115,000, you will typically only be able to claim around $65,000 to $75,000 in deductions through the claiming of interest and depreciation. The remaining $40,000$50,000 will usually be claimed over another five years.
