or the first time since the event’s inception, one police officer was awarded both of the top prizes at last week’s St Marys Police Officer of the Year Awards.

Leading Senior Constable Troy Bulpett was awarded both the Peer and the Community

awards last Wednesday night, April 6, for his work in two separate cases.

Leading Snr. Cons. Bulpett was nominated for the Community Award by the family of a threemonth-old infant who passed away last October.

He commenced CPR when the infant wasn’t breathing as no ambulance services were available at the time but unfortunately, the infant could not be saved.

Also nominated in the Peer Award category, he succeeded in a $4 million St Marys drug bust in April 2015 after he pulled the offender over in relation to traffic offences.

“It’s so hard to put into words the joy I get in going to work,” Snr. Cons. Bulpett said.

“I’m extremely proud to receive these awards – it’s probably the best moment in my policing career, so thank you very much.”

Brave Bryson’s cancer battle is far from over Community rallies behind three-year-old with fundraisers organised to help fund his care JADE ALIPRANDI

hree-year-old Bryson Miles has just started the battle of a lifetime after having a cancerous tumour removed from his brain in February.

The Penrith resident, and his family, have a strong support network, including the team at Bryson’s childcare centre, Spunky Monkeys Early Learning Centre.

Over $3,500 was raised last Friday, April 8, to help with Bryson’s ongoing care after the team at the centre held a fundraiser in Bryson’s honour.

“Over 150 people came which was amazing, we didn’t expect that kind of a turnout,” Spunky Monkeys Early Learning Centre Director, Shannon Hadley said.

“It was a massive shock to everyone when Bryson was first diagnosed and it all happened very quickly, so it felt good to be able to help in this way.”

A personal blog on an open Facebook page has since been set up to document Bryson’s already arduous journey.

The page has amassed almost 3000 likes so far.

Comments of love and support are written under every post, with many people getting behind Bryson and his battle.

The youngster was first diagnosed after Bryson’s mother, Tamara, realised something was wrong while the family was on a holiday.

Bryson has already started chemotherapy and will continue treatment for just over a year, with little breaks in between rounds.

“There is really nothing we can do to help but doing something like our fundraiser felt like we were helping the family in a small way,” Ms Hadley said.

“There is nothing you can say and nothing you can do to make it better; all you can do is be there for them.”

A fundraising page was also set up by family members with over $19,000 already raised for Bryson.

Another event will be held for Bryson at Penrith Paceway at 6pm on Friday, April 29 called ‘Boogie for Bryson’.

It’s $5 entry which covers a drink, a packet of chips and a bag of lollies.

Ayres faces his biggest test It is inevitable that the debate surrounding the State Government’s stadium strategy will reach some sort of conclusion in the coming days or weeks.

Compromise seems to be the only way a solution will be found and I’m sure that will be the end result.

That compromise will surely involve an end to the plan to knock down and re-build Allianz Stadium – the proposal nobody wants.

It’s evident now that the Government simply can’t spend enormous taxpayer dollars on the plan when it has widespread public disdain.

No matter what your political views may be, or your opinions on the stadium strategy, there is no question that this is the biggest challenge ever faced by Sports Minister and Penrith MP, Stuart Ayres.

The end result means a lot for Mr Ayres, not only for his political ambitions and his future as Sports Minister, but for his status as our local MP. If he manages to negotiate a reasonable result, it’ll only add to his reputation of being a stellar negotiator with a tough attitude that gets results.

If he presides over a disaster, then it’ll obviously have a flow-on impact to his role in representing Penrith.

I’d like to make one point on where Penrith sits in all of this.

In the past, it’s been put forward that the wider stadium strategy includes a new venue in ‘outer western Sydney’ in the long-term future.

To me, that’s always sounded like a pie in the sky promise that is unlikely to eventuate.

In all the debate about Allianz Stadium, Parramatta Stadium and ANZ Stadium,

And yet ‘outer western Sydney’ is where there will be enormous population growth and need for better facilities in the coming decades.

Let’s hope it’s back on the agenda soon and that the Government isn’t using clubs like Penrith as a pawn in the stadium game, given the Panthers are desperate to have the stadium built locally.

earlier this week that a fast train network linking Australia’s east coast capitals and regional centres could be on Malcolm Turnbull’s agenda.

According to The Australian, the Prime Minister is set to unveil his cities policy, which will include a proposal for changes to Australian infrastructure projects.

A fast train from Sydney’s CBD to Badgerys Creek airport is said to be the government’s first priority.

I’m sure it’s all music to the ears of voters who struggle to even get from Penrith to Central on time and in comfort on Sydney’s rail network let alone crisscross the nation.

Three levels of government can’t even find a way to deliver enough parking for people wanting to get to work via the rail network, and yet we’re talking about a plan as grand as this.

The new $5 note What is going on over at the RBA? Surely there’s been a computer software update over there since the days of Word Art. The new $5 note is a shocker.

RBA Governor Glenn Stevens said the new note featured images of the Prickly Moses wattle and the native Australian bird, the Eastern Spinebill.

River restaurant strip gets green light

Construction to begin this year on 11 new restaurants near Tench Reserve DALE DRINKWATER

restaurant strip along the Nepean River at Tench Reserve is no longer a pipe dream, now Penrith Council has approved its development.

Three brand new buildings will straddle the existing The Coffee Club site, with an approved 11 restaurant and cafe tenancies, plus outdoor seating and hundreds of car spaces.

Local brothers, Steve and Charles Sentas said the development will begin construction within the year, with hopes it could be finished in time for Christmas.

“It’s not going to be built in three months time, we still have a lot of work to do, but it will be started this year, for sure,” Steve said.

The Sentas brothers have received a huge amount of interest from potential tenants proposing a range of different cuisines from steak houses to pizza, Thai and Chinese, but nothing is set in stone.

Of the 11 potential restaurants, a number will be facing the Nepean River, with the rest facing each other in an outdoor arcade in the middle of the buildings.

“It’s going to be very good for the area, but we have to get the right mix of tenants,” Steve said.

Food Authority’s giant bite Restaurants and takeaway outlets fined and added to name and shame list DALE DRINKWATER

opular local restaurants and takeaways have found themselves on the NSW Food Authority’s ‘name and shame’ list.

Of around 900 restaurants, clubs, takeaways and other food premises in the Penrith Council area, six were found not following protocol over November and December last year.

Michidora in High Street, Penrith, had pests on the premises, and was fined $880 for failing to take all practicable measures to eradicate and prevent the harbourage of pests.

It was also fined a further $880 for not ensuring fixtures, fittings and equipment were maintained to the required standard of cleanliness.

The longstanding Panthers Pizza and Kebabs in High Street got hit with two fines costing it $880 in total, with previous warnings given on both issues.

It was caught failing to maintain the cleanliness of its fixtures, fittings and equipment and failed to display potentially hazardous food under temperature control.

Upgrade to station will be a winner Ayres says new-look Penrith Station will be a “boost to the community” as work gets underway DALE DRINKWATER

edestrians crossing Penrith Station will need to pass through the paid area of the station, now that site establishment and early works for a major upgrade are underway.

Despite the disruption, Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said the NSW Government’s upgrades to Penrith Station will be worth it.

“The upgrades will be a boost for the Penrith community, with the improvements designed to provide a better customer experience and increase capacity for future growth in the region,” he said.

“Once complete, customers using Penrith Station will benefit from new lifts and stairs to the platforms, an upgraded station concourse, improved bus, taxi, and kiss and ride areas, and upgrades to lighting and CCTV.” From now until April 27, works will be undertaken between 8pm and 5am, removing trees in the bus interchange, and preparing for the relocation of services on the station platforms and concourse.

footbridge will be closed for construction, and pedestrians will need to walk through the paid concourse area to walk across the station.

The lift in the unpaid area of the footbridge will be closed, but all other lifts will remain available to customers and pedestrians.

During this time, staff will be available to assist pedestrians to cross the station, but anyone accessing trains will still need to pay for a ticket.

The improvements are being delivered as a part of the Transport Access Program, a State Government initiative to deliver modern, safe and accessible transport infrastructure.

Of the $150 million investment, western Sydney has been a major beneficiary that includes the upgrade of six western Sydney stations, including Pendle Hill, Blacktown, Wentworth Falls and Flemington.

In addition, over 50 car spaces will be reopened for Penrith customers following resurfacing work near the corner of Jane Street and Castlereagh Roads.

More parking next to the existing commuter car park on Lord Sheffield Circuit is also on its way, with State Government plans to build a second 300 space multi-storey car park.

However, parking on the eastern side of the station remains a significant headache for commuters each day.

Council hits government for six Upcoming Federal Election presents an opportunity for Council to fight for vital funding DALE DRINKWATER

he future of Penrith has been broken down into six key priorities, that Penrith Council will be advocating for ahead of the Federal Election.

On the back of a successful campaign ahead of the State Election last year, Council hopes to use this year’s election to secure more commitments for key projects in the area.

Six priorities were identified last week to bring improved transport, infrastructure, roads and arts and culture to western Sydney.

Council’s Assistant General Manager Craig Butler said it’s very clear the community wants transformation, and a north-south rail link – one of the key priorities – will facilitate that.

“We are grateful for the roads and the $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Package, but rail changes everything,” he said.

“State and Federal Governments need to bring forward that rail.”

A second priority is the upgrade of Regatta Park in Emu Plains, that Mr Butler said with State and Federal funding will be transformed into a beautiful space.

The upgrade of Mulgoa Road is also on the list, to expand it to six lanes between Glenmore Park and Andrews Road.

A fourth priority is to build on Penrith as a regional city, and supports the National Growth Areas Alliance for a dedicated infrastructure fund to ‘future-proof’ fast growing outer suburbs.

In this, Mr Butler spoke of the delivery of a central city park, and said Penrith is offering to be a pilot for such regional city transformation.

Council is also asking the Federal Government to release 3.66 hectares at the Thornton estate for urban and economic development close to the train station.

The sixth priority is to invest in Penrith’s creativity, for increased support to attract talent to the region, and for funding to upgrade The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre.

A Council spokesperson said some of the 2016 priorities build on the success of the 2015 priorities, such as the $30 million commitment to arts and cultural funding.

“The $30 million promise was a great win for western Sydney but we are still waiting to see any direct flow of funds to Penrith. This is why we’ve gotten more specific as we believe the inequity has been acknowledged,” she said.

Are you one of the missing 2000?

Breast cancer claims the lives of more than 900 NSW women each year, yet despite these odds, over 400,000 women haven’t had their recommended screening mammogram in the past two years.

It’s an alarming number, considering newly released figures from BreastScreen NSW which show that if each of these women were to have their mammogram, more than 2000 would be found to have breast cancer.

BreastScreen NSW is now taking action to find these 2000 women across the state who currently have breast cancer but don’t realise it.

Led by comedian and women’s health advocate, Jean Kittson, the ‘FIND the NSW 2000’ campaign is urging women aged 50-74 to book their free mammogram, so that these cancers can be found in their earliest stages, when the chances of successful treatment are highest.

Temporary lane closure on Kent Road, Claremont Meadows Roads and Maritime Services will be carrying out work to upgrade Kent Road from south of Caddens Road to south of Kent Road bridge, part of the $70 million upgrade of Werrington Arterial Road.

Work will include upgrading the existing Kent Road bridge, completing the new M4 Motorway ramp connections to Kent Road and relocating existing services.

Electronic message signs and temporary traffic signals will be in place on either side of the worksite to safely manage the traffic in both directions through the single lane.

Magistrate warns mother to stay off the roads

Lisa Michelle Ross was forced to surrender her licence on Monday after pleading guilty to low-range drink driving.

The mother-of-three told Penrith Local Court she didn’t think she was over the limit as she had “drank a lot of water” before getting behind the wheel.

Magistrate Ian Duncan McRae said he wouldn’t be so lenient if she came before him again.

“Whatever you do, don’t drive a vehicle until you get your licence back,” he said.

“Otherwise your kids will have to find somewhere else to live as you’ll be going to jail.”

She was disqualified from driving for six months and fined $650.

P-plater fined $650 and given a message to pass on to friends

A young P-plate driver has been hit with $650 worth of fines after pleading guilty to a string of traffic offences.

Jaxon Rikiti, 18, faced Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with novice drink driving, failing to display his Pplates and committing an illegal U-turn.

Magistrate Ian Duncan McRae said “jamming p-plates behind number plates” was inadequate and questioned why police were not more active in promoting plate holder mounts.

“When you get your licence back tell your friends what the penalties are for not playing ball,” Magistrate McRae said.

He was disqualified from driving for three months.

Woman on enough medication “to sink a battleship”

A local magistrate has warned a woman he described as being “on enough medication to sink a battleship” to stop adding cannabis to the mix.

Joanne Dubina, 43, appeared before Penrith Local Court on Monday where she pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis plants.

Ms Dubina’s lawyer said her client used the drug to ease her anxiety and depression and cultivated the plants to avoid having to associate with drug dealers.

“My view is that cannabis is not assisting you,” Magistrate Ian Duncan McRae said. “Try to get on with your life without the use of cannabis.”

She was fined $50 and the plants were ordered to be destroyed.

Magistrate suggests man should give up drinking

A young man has been given a stern reprimand after assaulting two security guards.

Jesse Arthur Shepherd fronted Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with two counts of common assault.

Apart from being an “absolute menace” to the security guards, Magistrate Ian Duncan McRae said Mr Shepherd was lucky he was not going to take a “more onerous view” of him.

“Wake up to yourself,” Magistrate McRae said. “If you get agro when you’ve been drinking, give it a miss.”

He was convicted and fined $250 for each offence.

Good behaviour bond for man who says he’s giving up drugs

A Mount Riverview man has been told to “walk around the block” instead of using cannabis as a stress-reliever.

Andrew Michael Salis fronted Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with driving under the influence of an illicit substance.

Mr Salis told the court he planned to stop smoking the drug in the wake of the offence.

He was placed on a 16-month good behaviour bond.

Man to be sentenced in May over drink driving charge

A driver who was so intoxicated he ran a motorist off the road has described his decision to drive drunk as “inexcusable”.

Vishaal Anand Naidu told Penrith Local Court on Wednesday he would not have been able to live with himself had he injured someone.

“I am truly sorry for what I did,” he said.

The court heard Mr Naidu had lost his job and independence since his licence was revoked after he was observed swerving all over the road in the early hours of the morning.

The matter was adjourned to May 11 for sentencing to enable Mr Naidu to complete a traffic offenders program.

$500 fine for man found with dead cannabis plants

Ashley Kevin Wacker has been told to “get rid of the illegal substances he has lying around” after he was found in the possession of dead cannabis plants.

Penrith Local Court heard on Wednesday that the plants were left over from a previous thwarted attempt at cultivation.

“I will impose a fine as much for his stupidity and his criminality,” Magistrate Roger Clisdell said.

He was ordered to pay $500.

Magistrate warns man he may face prison if he reoffends

Peter Andrew Eivers of Emu Heights has been fined and disqualified from driving for nine months after pleading guilty to mid-range drink driving.

Mr Eivers appeared before Penrith Local Court on Wednesday where he also pleaded guilty to using a mobile phone while driving, driving without carrying a licence and failing to surrender his licence.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell reminded him not to drive while disqualified.

“With your record, jail will be a real possibility,” he said “You’ll be knocking on the doors of Parklea saying ‘let me in’”.

He was fined $1,000 for mid-range drink driving, $350 for the use of the mobile phone, $100 for driving without carrying a licence and $200 for failing to surrender his licence to police.

Man will “keep fit” thanks to daily walk to Penrith

An Emu Plains man charged with break and enter, shoplifting, and goods in custody offences will still have to report daily after his bail amendment request was refused.

Joel Smith fronted Penrith Local Court on Wednesday where he pleaded not guilty to the break and enter and goods in custody and guilty to shoplifting.

Despite having to walk from Emu Plains to Penrith every day, Magistrate Roger Clisdell denied Mr Smith’s request to reduce his reporting days.

“It’s keeping him fit isn’t it,” he said? “It will stop him doing anything naughty in the meantime.”

The matters were adjourned for hearing on July 14 and 19.

Six month ban for man who blew 0.085 at 8.40am

A man has had his licence disqualified for six months after pleading guilty to drink driving.

Mukesh Kumar fronted Penrith Local Court on Monday where he was convicted of mid-range drink driving and slapped with a $500 fine.

Magistrate Ian Duncan McRae said Mr Kumar must have consumed an “enormous amount of alcohol” to have recorded 0.085 some seven hours after his last drink.

He was pulled over for a random breath test at 8.40am in Glenmore Park on February 28.

“Beer in, brains out”

Craig Justin Talbot, 40, has had his licence revoked after he pleaded guilty to mid-range drink driving.

Magistrate Ian Duncan McRae said Mr Talbot’s drink driving history showed he still had not picked up on the pattern of “beer in, brains out”.

He was sentenced to 175 hours of community service and disqualified from driving for nine months.

South Penrith: Three charged following domestic incident

Three people were arrested and charged after police received a domestic complaint last week.

At about 10.15pm on Friday, April 8, police arrived at an address on Gladswood Avenue in South Penrith.

While out the front of the premises, a 32-year-old man began swearing at police.

He was arrested.

A 34-year-old woman at the location allegedly attempted to prevent the male from being arrested by pulling police away from him.

Another man, aged 22, also allegedly attempted to intervene in the arrest of the 32-year-old man.

Officers were forced to deploy OC spray.

It’s alleged all parties were intoxicated.

All three were arrested and charged, and are due to appear at Penrith Local Court later this month.

Penrith: Wanted man arrested after police spot him on High St

A man with an outstanding warrant for his arrest was found by police walking down a local street.

At about 10.15am on Wednesday, April 6, police officers from Penrith Local Area Command were patrolling the streets of Penrith.

When patrolling High Street, they came across a man who was speaking loudly on the phone and was swearing a lot.

Police stopped him and had cause to take his details.

They found he had an outstanding warrant.

He was arrested by police and taken to Penrith Police Station.

The 26-year-old appeared in Penrith Local Court on the same day of his arrest and had his bail refused in relation to traffic offences.

Penrith: Crowbar used in violent road rage incident

An alleged road rage incident involved a crowbar and a man punching another man numerous times in Penrith last week.

At about 8pm on Wednesday, April 6, a 46-year-old St Marys man was allegedly closely following another man along Belmore Street in Penrith while continuously beeping his horn.

The victim, a 22-year-old man, pulled into a car park along Station Street.

The offender allegedly got out of his vehicle and opened the door of the victim’s car.

He attempted to pull the victim out of the car by grabbing his shirt and he allegedly began throwing punches.

He returned to his vehicle and pulled out a crowbar from his boot and threatened the victim with it.

Police arrived at the scene after numerous calls were made from members of the public in regards to the incident.

The man was arrested and charged.

He is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on May 19.

Penrith: Colyton man charged after refusing to ‘move along’

Police were called to a business on Mulgoa Road in Penrith on the weekend after reports of a man acting suspiciously.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, April 10, police arrived at the scene after a member of the public called them.

Police spoke to a man at the scene who was allegedly intoxicated.

He was given a ‘move along’ notice but refused to follow the instructions given to him by police.

The 35-year-old then swore at police and continued to challenge them.

He was arrested and taken back to Penrith Police Station.

The Colyton man was charged with six offences and was granted conditional bail to appear in Penrith Local Court on May 11.

Another famous battle The daughter of former New South Wales Premier Neville Wran has settled out of Court over a dispute with her half-sister about Wran’s $40 million Estate.

Harriet Wran is currently in jail accused of murder. She launched her legal action together with her brother, Hugo, from behind bars.

There are a number of specific people who are eligible to contest a deceased person’s Will and this includes natural children, adopted children, spouses and de factos, and some other categories of people who are dependent on the deceased.

While the terms of the settlement remain confidential there are a number of claims that accused murderer Harriet Wran may have been making regarding Mr Wran’s Estate. These include: 1. Asking for a greater share of the Estate (it is understood she stood to receive approximately $10 million).

2. Altering the terms of the Will, for example if there were restrictions on when and how Harriet could access her money.

3. Contesting who was to be in charge of her inheritance while she remains in jail.

From the suburbs to the big screen Penrith converted into suburban America for confronting film inspired by the Sandy Hook massacre DALE DRINKWATER

ocals will be able to spot several Penrith locations in an upcoming short film produced by former Werrington local, Pete Ireland.

The 34-year-old grew up in Werrington Downs, and is a former student of both Werrington County Public School and St Dominic’s College.

Mr Ireland shot scenes at his old primary and secondary school, and used former neighbours’ homes to recreate an American feel for his 15 minute film ‘12.12.12’.

“The whole film, except for one scene, is being shot in Penrith, that is subbing to be middle-suburban America. We filmed at a high school, a primary school, and a couple of houses,” he said.

These locations, including a humble home in Lockyer Avenue, Werrington County, could soon be famous after he enters the finished product into short film festivals across the world.

“We are looking to put it in to the major film festivals, especially in North America as we think it has a North American slant to it. I’ve also had a brief chat with local broadcasters about turning the film into an episodic series,” he said.

“The director, James Crisp, is somebody who pays very close attention to what

happens in the world, and he was quite affected by Sandy Hook,” he said.

The story follows two brothers, who are marginalised in their town and turn their revenge on their former elementary school.

“Throughout the story, you don’t agree

with what they’re doing in any way, shape or form, but you understand how a person would get to that point,” Mr Ireland said.

Mr Ireland thanked the Penrith community, who have helped ease the amount of work and costs involved in creating a short film, for their support.

Council extends Junior Mayor concept to high school students DALE DRINKWATER

igh school students now have the opportunity to be a young Mayor or a young Councillor at Penrith City Council.

For 15 years, the opportunity has been offered to just primary school students, but for the first time will be separately open to secondary students.

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said the competition, open to students from Year 7 to 9, provides a unique opportunity to learn about the role of Council in the local community.

“We expect our young leaders from Year 7 to 9 will be very passionate and take part in spirited debate,” she said.

“We know the young people in our community are passionate about democracy and want to have a say about where they live.”

As part of Local Government Week 2016, the new secondary schools format gives future local politicians a chance to experience and learn more about local government and democracy.

As Penrith is positioning itself as the Adventure Capital of NSW, students entering are required to outline what their best adventure in Penrith would be.

Entries can be a story, poem, an artwork or comic strip and need to either fit on

No talent time The list of nominees for the award of this year’s Gold Logie goes to show how bereft of local talent that Australian TV has become (Chatter on the Box, Weekender April 7). The shows that the nominees are involved in are receiving less than impressive ratings and just illustrate how mediocre local TV productions have become. TV insiders who are usually quite parochial when it comes to their industry, have been critical of the selections with one insider calling the list an “embarrassment” and “a complete joke”. Just like the award of ‘Australian of the Year’, the award of the Gold Logie has become meaningless.

It’s unfortunate that Fiona Scott calls people who don’t agree with her ‘cronies’ (Unions angry at proposed changes, Weekender April 7) simply because they belong to a union and are concerned about conditions of civilian workers in Defence.

It’s poor form to personally attack the constituents and public servants who do not agree with your policies. In my view when it is done without any effort to answer the underlying issue that was being discussed, it suggests a lack of knowledge or care about that issue.

Never too young to be a good leader Students come together to share leadership expertise as part of unique education initiative DALE DRINKWATER

ur youngest leaders came together to share their expertise in a Youth Leadership Day at Glenmore Park Public School last week.

Last Wednesday, over 100 school captains and student representative council members shared with each other their ideas on what it takes to be a leader.

Emu Heights Public School’s School Captain, Alex Garbutt-Young, said he enjoys the responsibility of being a leader in his role.

“We get to do extra things and make sure everyone is okay in the school. It makes me feel good knowing that everyone’s alright and feeling happy,” he said.

He said his favourite part about the Youth Leadership Day is meeting students from other schools, learning from them and offering them new ideas.

“Today I’m learning about how other students’ schools work with leadership, with different ideas and ways of doing things,” he said.

“To us, leadership is not just about having one person out the front, it’s about a whole group working together well.”

The public schools involved in the day were Glenmore Park, Emu Heights, Emu Plains, Leonay, Luddenham, Mulgoa, Regentville, Surveyors Creek, Wallacia and Warragamba.

Students from Glenmore Park High School also attended, to lead the students as they split into groups and made iMovies about how to work together and help their peers against bullying.

Assistant Principal of Emu Heights Public School, Kerri Rooney, said the practical activities allow students to enhance their leadership skills through role play and problem solving.

“The aim of the day is to get together all of our Student Leadership Teams so they can collectively participate in a range of activities specifically designed to develop skills in leadership, teamwork and cooperation,” she said.

“A further benefit of this initiative is that it will provide students with the rare opportunity to meet, network and learn collaboratively with their peers from other schools.”

Students heard from guest speakers such as Member for Lindsay Fiona Scott and NRL Development Officer Drew Dalton.

“This is the chance for students to understand dairy and its nutritional value as well as where their food is coming from.”

Buckets of paint and paint brushes were also delivered to the school as the final task of the program is to paint the cow.

Over the school holidays, students are busy working out a good name for their new pet and will then present a speech to the class as to why their name should be chosen.

As part of Dairy Australia’s national Picasso Cows Program, students from class 5/6 D were given the life-like statue to help them learn all about dairy.

The curriculum-based activity will see students completing interactive tasks over the 12 week period of the program.

Teacher Carol Dalton said the students will have a tonne of fun while they also learn about the importance of dairy.

“Customers of the pharmacy have been asking for months when the ‘MedClinic’ was going to open and now that it is, they love it,” Ms El-Fawal said.

“I personally think it’s a fantastic idea and is the perfect way for pharmacists and doctors to work together and collaborate for the patients.”

The Penrith Westfield pharmacy was due for a retail store refurbishment when it was realised that a doctor’s office could fit within the shop.

Opera hits a high note DALE DRINKWATER

et a taste for the future of opera in western Sydney, as the newly formed Western Sydney Opera company treats Penrith to their first performance.

On Saturday, May 7 at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, Western Sydney Opera’s founder and lead tenor Lorenzo Rositano will debut their talent, and start on a high note.

Western Sydney Opera is supported by Penrith Council, who contributed $6000 to help form the company and fund its first two productions, sparked by a recommendation from Councillor Jackie Greenow.

Kingswood resident, Mr Rositano, said the funding couldn’t come at a better time, to support local talent and help promote an unsupported culture in the region.

“We have the only cultural institution named after the late Dame Joan Sutherland in the world,” he said.

“She was a singer of international renown, so it makes perfect sense that Penrith, and the west, should have its own opera company.”

The next meeting for the Nepean/Blue Mountains Prostate Cancer Support Group will be held this Monday, April 18.

Over 100,000 volunteer collectors are needed by The Salvation Army to help make the door knock a success.

“To be able to raise funds to help people who need it in the Australian-wide community is really fulfilling work,” she said.

Green juices and smoothies are everywhere these days and are often promoted as the holy grail of healthy eating.

While there are benefits to consuming these types of beverages, the nutrition claims that accompany them are often over-hyped.

As with much of the nutrition information we get fed these days the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

In fact, the best way to eat your fruits and vegetables is as whole foods. This way you’ll increase your fibre intake and reduce the risk of over-consumption. After all it’s much easier to drink six apples than it is to eat them.

While whole foods should be top priority there’s nothing wrong with having the occasional juice or smoothie,

especially if it helps you reach your fruit and vegetable target for the day.

But it is important to understand the pros and cons.

For example, a fruit based smoothie can contain as many kilojoules as a main meal, which is OK if you’re having it as a quick breakfast but not so great it you’re having it alongside an already substantial lunch or dinner.

Smoothies and juices also deliver a large hit of sugar very quickly, and don’t contain the same fibre content as whole foods.

The best way to consume a smoothie or juice is to keep the portions to a minimum and look for options that contain a good amount of vegetables, which will help to keep the kilojoule and sugar content down.

If you have your own blender, play around with different combinations and see what you enjoy best.

Take into account your diet as a whole, and as with all foods moderation is key.

Finally, if you don’t like drinking green juices or smoothies, don’t force yourself to have them just because you’ve been told they’re ‘healthy’.

A salad or steamed vegetables will be just as good, if not better, for you.

By this time of year, snakes have usually started to hibernate. However, it is currently warmer than usual and we are seeing unusual snake activity.

In the last week alone we have had almost 10 animals bitten by snakes!

Dogs can be very inquisitive and are generally at highest risk of being bitten by a snake.

Cats are also susceptible to snake bites, especially those that like to hunt.

The most common area for a snake bite on a pet is on the head and legs.

Snakes are generally timid creatures and stay away from humans and pets. It is often our inquisitive pets that seek out snakes and tend to lead to problems. Trying to minimise areas where snakes are most likely to hide will decrease the likelihood of snakes; wood piles, clutter and long grass tends to give snakes hiding areas in our backyards.

If you suspect that your pet

has been bitten by a snake, try to keep your pet calm and relaxed and seek veterinary treatment as soon as possible. The sooner your pet is seen by a vet, the higher the chances of a recovery. If you can identify the snake or even take a photo, this will be very helpful in being able to treat your pet. However, never try to catch or kill a snake.

If we are unsure if your pet has been bitten or unsure of the snake type, a snake bite detection test can be performed on your pet’s blood or urine.

In Penrith, we tend to see two main types of venomous snakes; either red belly black snakes or brown snakes, and both types of snake bites are potentially fatal.

The brown snake tends to cause more neurological symptoms such as collapse and difficulty breathing. The red belly black snake is more likely to cause haemolysis and breakdown of blood.

However either snake can cause both symptoms with disastrous consequences if left untreated.

Treatment involves the administration of an antivenom.

Antivenom is very expensive and can mean treatment for snake bite is costly. Most animal health insurance will cover this cost so it is wise to consider pet insurance.

Pleasant drive for competitors

A

lmost exactly 25 years ago, Penrith was the starting point for a cross-country rally from Mount Pleasant to Mount Pleasant.

Though not quite the Paris to Dakar, it kicked off at the Cranebrook Shopping Centre – then known as the Mount Pleasant Shopping Centre – and finished all the way in the Hunter Valley, at the McWilliams Mount Pleasant Winery in Pokolbin.

The Mount Pleasant to Mount Pleasant Shake, Rattle and Roll Rally on Saturday, April 20 1991, was a fundraiser organised

by McWilliams Wines, for the Sunshine Home for people with an intellectual disability.

Celebrities got involved, with big names such as Derryn Hinch, Paula Duncan and her former partner John Orcsik, and some of the cast of ‘E Street’ and ‘A Country Practice’ getting behind the wheel.

All cars entered into the competition had to be a 1984 model or older, as the Mount Pleasant Elizabeth wine was aged for seven years, hence Mr Williams’ request for cars of that vintage too.

seven checkpoints along the way.

“But if a driver and his crew cannot decipher our cryptic directional clues, it will take them a whole lot longer,” he said.

At each checkpoint competitors were asked a trivia question, and failure to answer each question correctly resulted in a fine.

Only decent sized bribes would allow the competitors to continue, that contributed $12,000 to the overall $20,000 of funds raised.

McWilliams’ Leith Wood said the rally went like clockwork, especially at the finishing party.

“It was a real hoot,” he said.

The Weekender’s April 17, 2015, edition broke the story of plans to transform the Nepean River’s Tench Reserve into a buzzing restaurant precinct.

Two local brothers lodged the development application to Penrith Council to convert their empty nine acre property into a place for locals and tourists to dine and relax.

Plans revealed were for eight to 10 restaurants adjacent to the existing The Coffee Club, complete with 38,000 square metres of parking.

Also, a forum identified the rising issue of the drug ‘ice’ in the local community, and brainstormed ways collaboration between organisaitons can tackle it.

And a teenage boy had a stern talking to by police after burning toast started a fire in his Jamisontown home.

We paid tribute to household name, Richie Benaud, who sadly passed away on April 10 at 84.

Mr Benaud was born in Penrith and was an Australian institution in cricket, after playing 63 tests for Australia then making his mark in the commentary box.

In local sport, we congratulated Penrith City Softball’s U11 boys teeball team, who defeated Macarthur to claim the State title.

T

here is no question that Penrith’s position on the premiership table does not reflect the side’s effort over the first six weeks of the competition.

Coming out the other side of a tough draw to start the season, the Panthers have won just two matches so far this year but have been far from embarrassed in their losses and in fact probably put in their best performance of the year against North Queensland last Saturday night.

The game against the Cowboys was always going to answer the question about how Penrith are really travelling in this competition. The answer was quite clear – the side can match it with the best teams in the competition, but are just a little off

the pace at the moment when it comes to closing out games and taking crucial opportunities.

In simpler terms, they lack the knockout punch.

This Monday night the Panthers travel to Allianz Stadium to take on a Roosters side that finally secured their first win of the season last weekend, jumping out of the blocks and never surrendering their lead against their arch rivals South Sydney.

The Roosters were always going to win eventually and it’s probably a good thing that it happened last weekend so Penrith aren’t faced with a side staring down the barrel of all sorts of awful records.

But of course, the Roosters would have gained some confidence out of the victory, and particularly the standout performance of Dylan Napa up front.

The Panthers can overcome the Roosters by replicating much of what they did against the Cowboys last weekend. A completion rate of 87 per cent, 18 offloads and three line breaks shows that the

Panthers certainly came ready to play against the defending premiers. A similar performance against the Roosters would almost guarantee two competition points.

Penrith could, however, do with some more grunt up front especially from Sam McKendry, who after a reasonable start to the season was pretty poor against the Cowboys last weekend, clocking up just 27 metres from four runs. Compare that to his front row partner Reagan CampbellGillard who in less minutes produced 11 runs and 90 metres and you can see that McKendry needs to be delivering more for his team.

Conversely, nobody can be complaining about Penrith’s back three at the moment – Matt Moylan, Josh Mansour and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak were Penrith’s best last weekend with Mansour pushing his claims for a Blues jersey more and more every week. Moylan is getting better every week after returning from a long-term injury and is on the verge of a real standout game, while Watene-Zelezniak bagged

two tries and is playing safe, reliable yet exciting football.

Effort only gets you so far in this competition and while it’s not time for panic stations yet, the Panthers really do need to string some wins together soon.

If they use the performance they put in against the Cowboys last weekend as a blueprint, they should be able to secure victory against the Roosters and perhaps start a run of victories.

PANTHER RUMBLINGS with the masked panther

TAMOU A PANTHER? » It seems the Panthers are in the market

for a new forward next season with several players being linked to the club.

The rumour surrounding Newcastle’s Robbie Rochow has been floating around for a while (I understand he’s toured the Academy facilities in Penrith) but the strongest rumour seems to be surrounding Cowboys star James Tamou. At 27-years-old, Tamou’s next contract is an important one and while he’d love to stay with the premiership-winning Cowboys, there seems to be little doubt that he’ll go where the best deal is on the table.

» Reports last week suggesting the

Panthers would chase Paul White from the Broncos to become the club’s next CEO are not inaccurate, but it’s certainly unlikely that any move will take place.

Mr White’s recent health issues combined with the ages of his children (one of whom finishes high school this year) means it’s unlikely that he’ll make a move to Sydney. The Panthers would love to have him, but they’re realistic that they’ll probably have to find their new football CEO elsewhere.

» Even Jamie Soward is sick of watching

St George-Illawarra at the moment. His former club are travelling so badly that the halfback switched over to watch the curling championships instead of last Thursday night’s game between the Dragons and Broncos. For the record, Canada beat Norway 6-4.

weekend to watch the game between the Panthers and Cowboys. While it’s great to have Mr Grant taking such an interest in Penrith, there’s little doubt that he still struggles to connect with the true rugby league fan. Too much time in hire cars and corporate boxes will do that to you.

tin (pictured) could have been a Cowboy instead of a Panther. Fairfax Media has revealed that the Cowboys identified Martin as the hottest young playmaker on the market and flew the then Tigers youngster to Townsville last year to put forward a proposal that would have essentially seen him replace Johnathan Thurston when the great man eventually retires. Martin was keen to play first grade in 2016, however, and saw the Panthers as the best opportunity to make that happen. Turns out he was right.

Despite the disappointing loss to the Cowboys the night before, the players were in good spirits at the event, mixing with fans and taking photographs. Tours of the new Academy also took place and it seems pretty much every supporter had a smile on their face.

cot race held at Pepper Stadium. Competitors like the giant soft drink and Boost Juice are simply no chance of winning.

clearly the most watched pay television show of the day on Saturday, with 276,000 viewers.

» Phil Gould has declared that he wants

Matt Moylan to play out his entire career with the mighty Panthers. It has been known for some time that the club was in negotiations with Moylan to sign him to a long-term deal. “Matty will be with us for life. It’s just a matter of time when we do that,” Gould said on Tuesday.

» Former Penrith Panthers player Tas

Baitieri has been doing it tough in recent times and is currently in hospital. The prop and second rower played four seasons with Penrith from 1978-1981 before joining the Bulldogs. He would later rejoin the Panthers to finish his Australian playing career. The 57-year-old is in Westmead Hospital following complications from surgery. We wish him all the best.

anthers have treated 50 deserving people to an experience they’ll never forget with a special night out at the footy.

Last Saturday evening four Nepean Area Disability Organisation (NADO) touch football teams were rewarded with a delicious BBQ dinner and tickets to Penrith’s blockbuster match against the North Queensland Cowboys at Pepper Stadium.

The teams – which consist of male and female players with a disability, NADO staff and partners – play in the Penrith Touch Association social competition each Tuesday night.

Speaking with Extra Time, NADO Opera-

tions Manager Brooke Wilkie said last weekend’s night at the footy was a rare chance for players to experience the game up close.

“They loved it, they loved the whole experience,” she said.

“Most of them love the footy but don’t get to go that often for various reasons, so they might watch it on TV but never get to experience it live.”

Before the game the group were treated to a BBQ dinner at TC’s Sports Bar inside Panthers Leagues Club and were also issued with a special Panthers cap.

The experience was provided to NADO

by Panthers on behalf of ClubGrants Community Funding.

“To get that type of support from the club is massive for an organisation like us,” Ms Wilkie said.

“We’ve had a lot of support in the past from St Marys Leagues Club and to now

have Panthers on board, led by their Chairman David O’Neill, is huge.

“Being at the game and part of the atmosphere was awesome, everyone had a great time.”

Ms Wilkie revealed one Panthers player who everyone had their eye on was halfback Jamie Soward, who apparently is no stranger to a spot of local touch football.

“Our NADO teams have played against Jamie Soward in the social competition during the off-season, so they all know him very well,” she said.

“Only a few weeks ago Jamie came down to watch some touch footy games and actually gave Paul, one of our players, a Panthers headgear.

“On Saturday night they were cheering Jamie on like they knew him – that was really good to see.”

The NADO organisation is located in St Marys and Penrith.

Hall makes

his mark

any people who criticised Penrith’s decision to sign an AFL player in the offseason will undoubtedly be eating their words soon if they haven’t already, with former Gold Coast Suns ruckman Josh Hall shining brightly in his new-found code.

The 26-year-old was one of Penrith’s surprise signings in the recent off-season, having not played a single game of rugby league since he was a teenager.

But after months of hard work in the preseason as well as plenty of tutelage from the club’s premier wingers, Hall is really starting to find his feet.

Speaking with Extra Time, Hall said the

first quarter of the season has been an eye opener for him.

“It certainly was challenging early on not having played a game before,” he said.

“I didn’t know what to expect those first few games, so I watched Josh Mansour, Dallin as well as other wingers in first grade to mimic what they do.”

During his first six games for Penrith’s reserve grade team, Hall has not only bagged a couple of tries but also discovered he was a sharpshooter with the boot.

Hall is now one of the club’s top goalkickers and will no doubt improve as the season goes on if he continues to receive training from one of the game’s greats.

“I’ve been working with Daryl Halligan, who’s also working with Sowie and Matt Moylan,” Hall revealed.

“I played high level soccer growing up, so I was always kicking balls. When I played league when I was younger I was the goal-

kicker then too. One day at training I was kicking with the boys, slotting them over, and realised that I really enjoyed it. So I put my hand up and got the gig.”

While Hall admits he’s a long way off from ever playing first grade, the dream remains alive as long as he continues to listen and learn.

Hall said reserve grade coach Steve Georgallis has been right behind him since the beginning.

“He doesn’t treat me any differently to the other boys, but early on he had a chat with me and understood where I’d come from and encouraged me to ask questions,” he said.

“I guess it’s like riding a bike, I’m certainly getting there.”

PENRITH MUST WIN Another great performance from the Panthers against the Cowboys on Saturday night and against any other side in the competition it would have been enough to bank the two points, but the Cowboys just showed again why they are one of the favourites in 2016.

It is now time for the Panthers to convert theses great performances into competition points before the season starts to get too far away from them.

This week’s game against the Roosters is a must win and it should be a cracking game.

I am really excited about the battle up front with both teams boasting size, aggression and skill along with some fantastic young talent amongst both backlines.

The Chooks will turn up with plenty of confidence after a dominant performance over the Rabbitohs, but if Penrith play to

the standard they have set themselves this year, then I am certain they will come away with the win.

It’ll be interesting to see what sort of crowd they get on Monday night.

I would like to make mention that former NRL referee Phil Haines is making his return to the field this week in the local A Grade competition.

The Property Central team would like to wish him all the best on a successful return to the paddock.

It is fantastic for the Penrith Junior Rugby League to have such a high profile referee nurturing the younger refs coming through the ranks, and credit must go to Phil for giving up his time to give something back to his local area.

Well done Phil... this does not mean I like referees by the way!

TOUGH TO FIND A WINNER It sure is tough to pick a winner in the NRL in 2016. The last few weeks are testament to the fact that any team can win when they find top form, regardless of the opposition.

Unfortunately my bold prediction of two away wins missed the mark. It was an amazing victory against the Eels but the result against the Dragons was definitely a disappointment.

Go fathom the Dragons. They beat the Bunnies and us back-to-back, then suffer two of their worst defeats this century. They were on fire in the first two rounds, then suddenly lose to a struggling Dragons side and get spanked by the Dogs, then get knocked off by the previously winless Roosters.

But let’s get back to what’s most important – our mighty Panthers. This season we claimed the scalp of the premiership favourites Brisbane and really should have had that of the high-flying Bulldogs. We took the reigning premiers North Queensland down to the wire and showed real grit and determination to come within a converted try against the Cowboys.

I heard a stat earlier this week that we’ve had the smallest average game margin over the first six rounds of any team since 1967 – coincidentally our first ever season. And while it’s a sign of how hard the players are working to put themselves in a position to win each contest, don’t think being consistently competitive is the end goal.

Our players, our coaches and all our staff are only ever satisfied if we come off the field with the two points.

Penrith Panthers have won back to back games for the first time this season following a strong 28-16 win over the Newcastle Knights last Sunday afternoon.

Penrith led 16-10 at the break but it was the performance of Malakai WateneZelezniak that had everyone talking.

The brother of NRL star Dallin WateneZelezniak scored a hat-trick of tries that will no doubt put him in the mind of Anthony Griffin if an injury to the first grade backline ever eventuates.

Tyrone Peachey also had a strong game for the Panthers after he was a late inclusion.

Try scorers for the Panthers included Malakai Watene-Zelezniak (3), Zach Dockar-Clay and Tyrone Peachey. Josh Hall kicked four from five.

This Sunday the fifth-placed Panthers will travel to Morry Breen Oval to take on the ninth-placed Wyong Roos.

» Holden Cup: Penrith have continued

to show their dominance in the NYC with yet another impressive performance over a top four team.

Coming into the game in third position, the North Queensland Cowboys were no match for the first-placed Panthers who ran out 36-10 winners.

Try scorers for the Panthers included Ratu Tuisese (3), Nathan Cleary (2), Wayde Egan and Tyrone May. Cleary kicked four from seven.

This Monday afternoon the competition leading Panthers will hit the road to take on the second-placed Sydney Roosters.

Massey Cup competition took place last Saturday with St Marys narrowly defeating the Asquith Magpies 36-28.

Down 18-10 at half-time, St Marys started the second half in great fashion scoring four tries in the opening 20 minutes. St Marys continued to look threatening but poor handling errors provided the Magpies with opportunities and good field position.

Fijian flyer Luke Nadurutalo scored a hat-trick of tries while Brent Naden picked up the Man of the Match award.

This weekend St Marys will enjoy a bye before taking on the Wentworthville Magpies in Round 8.

ustralian violinist Vov Dylan can’t remember a time before he played violin.

Growing up as a third generation musician it’s not surprising that at just 21 months of age Vov was already fascinated by the instruments around him.

“It depends how you look at it as to whether it’s a family curse or a family blessing,” Vov laughed.

“As soon as I started to walk I was air playing the violin behind my dad so my grandfather made me a very small violin.

“I learned how to play the way you learn how to speak essentially. At the same time as I was learning what words were I was making notes on the instrument.”

His dedication to the violin has paid off with Vov now known as Australia’s fastest violinist after playing ‘Flight of the Bumblebee’ in 38.10 seconds in 2014.

Vov will bring these exceptional violin skills to western Sydney this weekend as part of his ‘Australia’s Andre Rieu’ tour which features the Palace Orchestra and special guests Derek Metzger, star of London’s West End, along with Desiree Regina who has toured Europe for Opera Holland.

For Vov the aim of the show is to create a production that will give audiences a new take on traditional violin music.

“I’m not your stereotypical classical violinist,” he said.

“There are melodies from classical material through to more recent songs like ‘The Blue Danube Waltz’ and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.”

This drive to reinvent classical music is something Vov shares with Andre Rieu, an entertainer he respects for his ability to engage with audiences outside the traditional classical genre.

“I have exceptional admiration for the man for what he has done to bring popular classical music back into the mainstream,” Vov said.

ussie actor Chris Hemsworth takes on the elements in his new film ‘In The Heart of the Sea’ which is out now on DVD and Blu-Ray. Based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s book of the same name, and true events which inspired the classic novel Moby-Dick, ‘In The Heart of the Sea’ takes place in the winter of 1820 on the New England whaling ship ‘Essex’ which was destroyed by a gigantic sperm whale.

The film focuses on the aftermath of the collision and the crew’s struggle to stay alive at all costs.

The survivors battle both the physical elements and emotional distress as they question their beliefs and the morality of the whaling trade.

Joining Hemsworth, who plays the role of first mate Owen Chase, is Benjamin Walker (‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’) as Captain Pollard and Cillian Murphy (‘The Dark Knight Rises’) as second mate Matthew Joy. The film was directed by Oscar winner Ron Howard, who is best known for his work on ‘Apollo 13’, ‘A Beautiful Mind’ and ‘The Da Vinci Code’.

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ is the first new ‘Star Wars’ release since Disney took over the franchise from Lucasfilm in 2012.

Out on DVD and Blu-Ray this week, the film is set 30 years after ‘Return of the Jedi’, the final release in the original ‘Star Wars’ trilogy.

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ introduces us to a new character, Rey (Daisy Ridley), a scavenger living on the planet Jakku.

It’s not long before she comes in contact with a BB-8 droid and a rogue stormtrooper, Finn (John Boyega), who explains that the droid is carrying important information as to the whereabouts of Luke Skywalker.

The pair find themselves in a battle between good and evil when the

Resistance and the First Order, led by Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) both come looking for the clues to the legendary Jedi’s whereabouts.

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ sees the return of several members of the original cast including Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford.

New comers Daisy Ridley and John Boyega are worthy additions to the cast and make for captivating lead characters.

The Lumineers Cleopatra

In 2012 Denver folk/rock band the Lumineers announced their arrival on the music scene with their smash hit single ‘Ho Hey’.

Since then they’ve toured the world, earned Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best Americana album, worked on two tracks for ‘The Hunger Games’ franchise and showed up on President Obama’s iPod. After the whirlwind of the last few years the band are back this month with ‘Cleopatra’, the follow up to their selftitled debut album.

The first track released from the album is ‘Ophelia’, which once again invokes that rustic foot stomping folk sound that fans fell in love with on their first record release.

‘Cleopatra’ was recorded in a rural studio near Woodstock in New York state, and the lyrics on the album include an exploration of the potential pitfalls of fame.

‘Cleopatra’ by The Lumineers is now available instore or online.

‘The Jungle Book’ is a Disney favourite that has delighted generations of children and adults since its release in 1967.

Now, fans of this classic tale will have the chance to relive the magic with the release of ‘The Jungle Book’ – a live action/CGI re-imagining of the much

loved story of Mowgli and his animal guardians.

Orphaned boy Mowgli (Neel Sethi) has been raised by a family of wolves in the remote jungles of India. But his world is turned upside down when a threat by the tiger Shere Khan (Idris Elba) forces him to leave his home.

Joining him on his adventure of self-discovery is Bagheera the panther (Ben Kingsley) and Baloo the bear (Bill Murray).

The journey takes Mowgli through the wild jungle environment as he meets

some friendly, and not so friendly, creatures.

Reviews of the film so far have been glowing, with critics praising the remake as a worthy follow-up to the original animated classic.

With its release coinciding with the school holidays, this is the perfect feel good flick that kids and adults are sure to love.

The drama stars Jessica Mauboy as Billie, a part-time country pub singer whose chance meeting with a wealthy city hotelier triggers a series of events that will change her life forever.

Ê Channel Ten has finally announced a host for its upcoming ‘Australian Survivor’ series with a surprise name getting the nod. One of Australia’s leading actors, Jonathan LaPaglia (pictured), will host the highly anticipated series to air on Ten later this year. Known for his commitment to personal fitness and outdoor pursuits, LaPaglia is a long-time, avid fan of ‘Survivor’. He is also the brother of fellow Hollywood actor Anthony LaPaglia.

oyota led the Australian new car sales race last month, with the HiLux light commercial and family-friendly Kluger SUV the stand-out perform-

ers.

Heading its nearest rival by no less than 72 per cent, Toyota recorded 17,849 sales in March, contributing to a first quarter tally of 46,493 units.

The new generation HiLux found 3,897 new homes to lead the light commercial segment; the ever-popular 4x4 variant accounting for 2,886 sales while the 4x2 notched up a solid 1,011.

An overall HiLux total of 9,499 sales year to date is 18 per cent ahead of its closest rival and 11 per cent up on the first quarter of 2015.

Also shining brightly was the seven-seat Kluger SUV, with 1,198 sales putting it 18 per cent up on the same month last year, and 2,918 registrations for the first three months landing it fractionally ahead of its 2015 first quarter performance.

Toyota Australia’s Executive Director of Sales and Marketing, Tony Cramb, said the strong March result reflects the continuing trust Australian new car buyers have in the Toyota brand.

“After six months in the market, the new HiLux is clearly resonating with commercial buyers who need a reliable and hardworking partner on the road, while Kluger continues as a family favourite,” he said.

he young men in our community who use their strength and aggression on the football field need to know that’s where it stops.

That was the message from Minister for Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Pru Goward at the launch of a new program, ‘Tackling Violence’, aimed at junior rugby league clubs.

At the Panthers Rugby League Academy on Tuesday, Ms Goward said there needs to be a blunt conversation had with young men on the impacts of domestic violence in their communities.

“We know governments can’t do that, communities have to do that. It has to involve prevention, and that’s attitude change,” she said.

“We have to say that we don’t want you as captain of our football team if that’s what you do at home.

“With the sporting community much loved and respected in NSW, it serves as an important channel to reinforce the message that young men are role models for others and respectful relationships with family members are non-negotiable.”

21 women in NSW lost their lives in the 12 months to September 2015, and this year 21 rugby league clubs across 21 communities have signed up to the program.

As part of the ‘Tackling Violence’ program, players and rugby league clubs sign a code of conduct around family and domestic violence, and if they break that code of conduct, they can be suspended.

The real life consequence is an immediate example of Program Mentor Alan Tongue’s point that violence in the home doesn’t stay inside the home.

“It doesn’t just affect the man and woman, but the kids and the community,” he said.

“Rugby league is the community hub for country towns, but it’s important we use them as a vehicle. If we set the right example here not only does it make us safe, but our next generation and so on.”

The program also provides support to perpetrators on where and how to get help, through healthy relationships workshops at local schools.

A documentary about the tragic loss of a mother at the hands of her partner, ‘Lana’s Warriors’, will be shown at workshops throughout the year.

Penrith Panthers General Manager Rugby League, Phil Gould, said telling the emotional story of the loss of 24-yearold Lana Walsh in 1994, will bring the community one step closer to prevention.

“I thank rugby league clubs for being a part of this, and certainly at Penrith we take this very, very seriously,” Mr Gould said.

Exciting new era begins for netball Early rivalry on show with Panthers to battle Greater Western Sydney in opening match of the NNSWPL NATHAN TAYLOR

fter nearly a year of planning and preparation, the brand new Netball NSW Premier League (NNSWPL) competition will officially begin this Wednesday evening at Sydney Olympic Park.

Featuring eight franchises from across the state, the NNSWPL is a new netball competition aimed to attract the best current and emerging talent within NSW. Its purpose is to offer a local, elite platform for players, coaches, officials and administrators, and provide bridging opportunities into the Australian Netball League and subsequent ANZ Championship.

Made up of 13 players from the Penrith, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury Netball Associations, the Panthers Opens team will be coached by Netball NSW Hall of Famer and former Australian representative Lisa Beehag.

Speaking with the Weekender, Beehag said she couldn’t wait for competition to finally get underway. “Everybody is excited because there’s the realisation that the pre-season is coming to an end and the real stuff is about to begin,� she said.

Beehag said.

“The pre-season games were all very close and it looks to be an unpredictable competition. “For us, the Opens competition will be very tough but we’re looking to win as many games as we can and be consistent in our first year.�

One of the Panthers Opens team’s main acquisitions is none other than St Clair junior and NSW Swifts representative Paige Hadley.

Beehag said she doesn’t expect the World Cup champion to have much of a playing role with the team. “I say this nicely but I hope we don’t see her at all because if we do see her, it possibly means she’s been dropped from the Swifts,� she said. “She’ll watch some of our games when she can but her main priority is the Swifts and obviously her Australian commitments.�

First up for the Panthers Opens and Under 20’s teams is an opening round clash against crosstown rivals Greater Western Sydney Fury.

Played at Netball Central, the Panthers Under 20’s team will battle the Fury at 7pm while the Opens will follow at 8.40pm.

Two NNSWPL games each week will be streamed live on BarTV Sports.

Wanderers dare to dream of third Grand Final appearance NATHAN TAYLOR

he Western Sydney Wanderers are now one win away from a third Grand Final appearance following a strong 2-0 victory over Wellington last Sunday.

The Wanderers finished the regular season in second place, which earns them a much needed week off before returning to Pirtek Stadium one last time for a home semi final.

Having to rely on results to seal first place, hopes of a second Premier’s Plate evaporated last Friday night as Adelaide defeated Melbourne City, but with Roar failing to defeat Melbourne Victory second place was up for grabs with a win over the Phoenix.

Speaking after the match, Wanderers coach Tony Popovic said he was delighted to finish the regular season in second place.

“We’ve picked up 48 points which is the second most we’ve picked up, so we had a fantastic season,” he said.

“We had a lot to play for in terms of finishing as high up the ladder as we could and we got the job done so we’re delighted.”

enrith Emus coach Jeremy Paul is remaining positive despite his side’s winless start to the rugby season.

It’s been a rough opening first four rounds for the Emus who have conceded 272 points and scored a competition low 47.

Last Saturday the Emus were left red-faced at home following a 71-0 thrashing at the hands of first-placed Randwick.

Paul said he wasn’t too worried about the blowout scorelines and would instead focus on the positives.

“Those scores would have been 140-0 last year or in previous years… for me, it’s the continual small improvements we are making each week,” he told the Weekender.

“I don’t care about the scores; I wasn’t walking into this blind thinking we could change this overnight.”

Paul believes his side will continue to grow as a group as the season goes on. He said he

was very impressed with the way his side were handling the tough defeats.

“I could see the disappointment on their faces – they cared about the results – and that’s a great position to be in,” Paul said.

One game the Emus can look forward to soon is their April 23 match-up against West Harbour. Next Saturday afternoon’s game at Concord Oval will be the first Emus game in years to be televised live on 7TWO. “The boys are really pumped for that game,” Paul said.

A total of $16,000 in prize money is up for grabs; six trophies for competition rounds; two Grand Champion trophies; and of course ‘bragging rights’ for the next 12 months.

Semco is sponsoring a Takeuchi Excavator Challenge to test an operator’s mastery of the latest in excavator technology.
