Drivers aren’t getting the message Four dead and almost 5000 caught speeding as motorists flout the law over long weekend enior police are pleading with motorists to take greater responsibility on NSW roads as the Easter long weekend road toll ended with four people dead, 189 injured and families torn apart. The long weekend saw several serious incidents in Penrith including a bad accident at Kingswood on Monday that saw three children under five transported to hospital for treatment of various injuries. In the early hours of Monday morning, a man was injured when his Mazda flipped on the M4 motorway at Emu Plains. It’s believed speed was a factor in the crash. Commander of Specialist Operations, Deputy Commissioner Catherine Burn said police are extremely disappointed that motorists were just not listening, and at worst, not thinking over the long weekend. “We got the message out there, but we’re disappointed the message didn’t get through,” Deputy Commissioner Burn said. “Police were out there all weekend, night and day, we’re doing our best to keep motorists safe but it seems there are some who just don’t care. Don’t care about themselves or anybody else. This attitude to driving has to change. “Right now there are four people dead,

S

including two young children, and families are left wondering why. “One of the reasons is lack of attention. Not paying attention to the conditions. Not paying attention to their surroundings. And just not paying attention. “While the Easter long weekend has ended, the school holidays have just begun, and there will be thousands of families taking a break. “We are asking that all motorists change their attitude to driving, pay attention so they get to and from their destinations safely.” Four people died on NSW roads this Easter long weekend compared to two people last year, with 189 people being injured, down 17 on last year (206 injured). So far this year we have had 87 people die on NSW roads compared to 91 last year. 243,888 breath tests were conducted resulting in 298 drink driving charges, and 4801 infringement notices were issued for speeding. 1300 Random Drug Tests were performed that resulted in 222 positive tests. Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said while some of the traffic offence figures were down the motoring public needed to show greater concentration.

A bad crash at Kingswood on Monday. Photo: Top Notch Video “It is apparent some of the behaviour and attitude of motorists has to change. We have to call it for what it is – it’s killing people,” Assistant Commissioner Hartley said. “The number of detections for speeding,

drink and drug driving is one thing, so are the fines which go with the infringement notices, but it’s the human cost, those who die on the roads, those who are injured, and the ones who are left behind to try and make sense of it all.”

Back to the drawing board for police when it comes to road safety Double demerit re-think needed? Another long weekend, another list of bad behaving drivers and more tragically, more lives lost on our roads. Why doesn’t the message get through? Why do people still think it’s more important to text their mate about last night than concentrate on what’s happening on the road in front of them? Why do people still, in 2015 despite all the warnings and messages, get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol? These are the questions that our police would so desperately love to answer, but like most of us, they’re baffled. Almost 5000 people were caught speeding across the long weekend in New South Wales. 298 people were caught drink driving and 222 people returned positive drug tests. Four people died across the long weekend and 189 people were injured. They are frightening statistics that suggest people continue to flout the law and put their lives and the lives of others at risk. Do we need to re-think the current campaigns and messages? The threat of double demerit points didn’t deter the 5000 people caught speeding over the long weekend nor the many others who got away with it (the police can’t be everywhere). So often the police and State Government are accused of revenue raising when it comes to the way our roads are policed. But when you see figures like those from the long weekend, you realise it’s the idiots behind the wheel we should be focusing on – not the revenue being raised. Nobody has the definitive solution, but there is no doubt that something needs to be done to ensure the message gets through. You only have to drive around Sydney for a few hours to see just how many people have a complete disregard for the lives of others.

Why doesn’t the message get through?

What will turn rugby league fans away People who aren’t intricately involved with rugby league will tell you that incidents like that involving Canterbury captain James Graham on Good Friday will turn fans away from the game. They’ll tell you that the ugly scenes of bottles being thrown at officials will have people switching codes quicker than the game itself can react. They’re wrong. As awful as those incidents were last weekend (and I am in no way condoning them), rugby league thrives on such controversy. Any code that can survive the Super League war, which effectively tore the game apart, will survive incidents like Graham’s tirade at referees and bad crowd behaviour from a minority. Where rugby league has the real potential to lose fans is the inconsistencies that happen on the field itself. On Monday night, the video referee overturned three on-field decisions by referee Matt Cecchin – all of them went against the Panthers and on reflection, all were probably correct. But why is the referee forced to make a decision on the field when he’s sending it upstairs anyway? Surely it only aggravates the fan base more when a referee says “try only for the decision to come back “no try, or vice versa. If the referee is going to refer a decision to the video referee anyway, let’s cut what has become an embarrassing situation of forcing him to essentially take a guess. After all, based on what we saw on Monday night, that guess has very little impact on the ultimate decision anyway. The NRL can only do so much to stop bad behaving players, ugly crowd scenes and off-field incidents that put a scar on the game. But it should do everything it can to ensure the things within its control are spot on. At the moment, that simply isn’t the case.

ondonderry, Glenmore Ridge and Mulgoa residents have struggled with little-to-no mobile phone reception for years, but they might just see an improvement in the near future. The three areas have been nominated to receive funding to upgrade mobile phone base stations by the Federal Government, an upgrade residents say has been needed for years. Troy Degarnham lives just a kilometre from his brother’s house at Glenmore Ridge, and said the difference in mobile reception between their homes is huge. “I get a little bit of 4G reception at my house, but I can’t get service at my brother’s house and it’s only a kilometre from my house,” he said. “You can’t even call me when I’m there, so I really support this initiative.” The $100 million Mobile Blackspot initiative will upgrade 300 mobile base stations around the country that will be chosen from 6000 locations up for consideration. While the odds may seem against our area’s favour, Member for Lindsay Fiona Scott, who submitted the three areas into the program, said we should know if western Sydney will experience better

by the end of June. Upgrade work will commence shortly after,” she said. However, it’s still not clear if the three key local areas will receive the upgrades, with the competitive selection process still underway. Big companies like Telstra, Optus and Vodafone are now required to bid for the work, by lodging proposals to the Government outlining where they would build base stations. The bidding for proposals is expected to improve competition in how these services are provided. The Department of Communications said this competitive selection process has been underway since December and network operators have until April 16 to lodge proposals. “The proposal must indicate the location of the base station, its total cost, the amount of funding required from the Commonwealth, the amount the operator will contribute, and the amount (if any) of funding from other sources,” a spokesperson said. Local Councils can support the provision of a base station in their area, and the Department of Communications said they anticipate Penrith City Council to become involved. Rugby League

Lots of reasons to have pride in our Panthers TROY DODDS

@troydodds

t hasn’t been the best week for rugby league’s image, particularly given the events of Good Friday. It also hasn’t been the best week for the Penrith Panthers, who were pounded 30-10 by the Cowboys on Monday night. But less than 24 hours after that disappointing performance, the players were back at Pepper Stadium much to the delight of adoring young fans. While the heavy rain in Penrith on Tuesday forced the cancellation of a coaching clinic, kids still turned out in force to meet their heroes. Players like Matt Moylan, Jamal Idris, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Josh Mansour were swamped by the adoring youngsters (and the odd parent) keen to get autographs and photos. Despite the obvious disappointment in the air after the loss on Monday night and the events of the weekend, scenes like those on Tuesday certainly give rugby league something to smile about. The Panthers are preparing for Saturday night’s crucial clash against Manly. More rugby league: See today’s edition of Extra Time in our centre pages.

Police snapshot Police warning after spike in thefts from motor vehicles

Colyton: Woman involved in crash was drink driving

St Marys Police are reminding local motorists to make sure that they lock their vehicles when left unattended and remove any items of value or keep them out of sight. There has been a number of recent thefts from unattended motor vehicles, particularly in the Werrington and St Clair/Erskine Park areas, often where vehicles have been left unlocked. Property taken from these vehicles includes wallets containing cash and bank cards, electronic equipment such as mobile telephones and laptop computers, building equipment and tools. By removing the opportunity for would-be thieves to take your property you not only lessen the risk of your valuable items being taken, but can also prevent any damage to your vehicle or the use of your cards or devices.

About 11pm on Thursday, April 2 police attended the M4 Motorway at Colyton following reports of a motor vehicle collision. There police spoke with the 48-year-old female driver of a white Toyota sedan who had allegedly collided with the safety guard rail. When spoken to the driver was subjected to a roadside breath test which returned a positive reading. The female driver was subsequently conveyed to St Marys Police Station where she underwent a breath analysis that returned a positive reading of 0.179. The driver had their licence suspended on the spot and was issued a court attendance notice for the offence of ‘Drive with High Range PCA’ and bailed to appear at Penrith Local Court on April 23.

St Marys: Learner driver busted speeding

Kingswood: Teenagers charged over robbery

A 30-year-old learner driver has been busted driving in St Marys unaccompanied, and exceeding the speed limit. About 2pm on Sunday, April 5 officers attached to Penrith Highway Patrol were conducting patrols in the St Marys area when a 30-year-old male was stopped in Gordon Street, St Marys. The male was stopped after allegedly being detected at a speed of 110km/h in a 50km/h zone. The driver produced a learners licence and he was issued infringements for the offences of ‘learner unaccompanied’, ‘not display L plates’ and ‘exceed speed limit by over 45km/h’.

Police have arrested two teenagers over a service station robbery last month. Police allege that at about 2am on Thursday, March 12, the teenagers entered the service station on the Great Western Highway, Kingswood, demanding money from the attendant. Police allege that they were armed with a knife. Both allegedly ran from the service station and police from St Marys Local Area Command attended and began an investigation. On Tuesday, March 19, police arrested a 17-year-old male at Penrith Railway Station and arrested a 15-year-old male at a Kingswood home. Both were taken to Penrith Police Station and charged over the incident.

ust a year and a half after drastic surgery, Karen Copeland and her daughter Alana will participate in next month’s Relay for Life, but for a pancreatic cancer survivor like herself it’s like running a marathon. Mrs Copeland was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer several years ago, and in the space of two months, her daughter Alana Copeland had shaved her head and raised over $12,000 for the Cancer Council. “It was the first time ever I had shaved my head, and it was pretty hard to get used to,” Miss Copeland said. “We had an amazing amount of support from the community. Local small businesses got behind me and my family and supported us a lot.” In August 2013, Mrs Copeland underwent surgery at the Royal North Shore Hospital – surgery Miss Copeland said was “fairly unknown” and quite intense. “Mum had a 16 hour operation that removed a large amount of her organs. She lost a lot of weight but at least she is still with us today,” she said. Mrs Copeland recovered in hospital for five weeks, spent two-and-a-half weeks of that in intensive care and lost almost 40

J

kilograms. “They took my whole pancreas, gall bladder, spleen, appendix, three-quarters of my stomach, 29 lymph-nodes and apparently I died three times on the table,” Mrs Copeland said. “That was an emotional day, my son sat beside me in hospital for two whole weeks. I didn’t know how bad I was at the time.” Just five per cent of Australians survive pancreatic cancer, and Mrs Copeland said she owes it to the Cancer Council and the relentless efforts of her daughter. “You can’t do it by yourself. When I was first diagnosed I didn’t know about cancer, the Cancer Council’s help was huge,” Mrs Copeland said. “Alana’s always put this first. Her job suffered because of this, she lost a promotion and she had to take so much time off to take me to hospitals.” As happy as Mrs Copeland is with the results so far, she said it’s hard to label herself as a cancer survivor. “You never think you’re doing the ‘survival march’ and wearing the sash when nobody has actually come out and said you’re a survivor,” she said. Alana Copeland has organsied a raffle with over $7,500 worth of locally donated prizes for Penrith’s Relay for Life.

PBS victory for local MS sufferers Financial burden now a little easier after Federal Government approves new PBS listings DALE DRINKWATER

out. It was at that point I thought the wider community has to be educated about MS – I wasn’t drunk,” she said. Mrs Taylor said making Lemtrada (R) more affordable to those suffering RRMS will offer new hope to people who have not had success with current methods of treatment. “The Symptoms of MS vary from person to person, as do the benefits or reactions to each new drug,” she said. “The more choices a person living with MS has when it comes to treatments only widens the possibility of finding a suitable drug that will give a better quality of life.” Minister for Health, Sussan Ley said the announcement of Lemtrada (R) on the PBS will be a huge boost. “Patients suffering RRMS today have easier access to the new and important medicine because of its listing on the PBS,” she said. From the first of this month, Lemtrada (R) was added to the PBS, alongside Afinitor (R) to treat “metastatic or unresectable, welldifferentiated pancreatic neuroendocrine tumour (pNET)” and Lucrin (R) to treat “central precocious puberty”. These medicines will be subsidised for four years at a cost of $75 million to the Federal Government.

drug to treat remitting-relapsing multiple sclerosis (RRMS) is now more affordable, benefiting local resident Liz Taylor and thousands of other MS sufferers around the country. On April 1, the Abbott Government announced the introduction of three new drugs, including Lemtrada (R) to treat RRMS, to be subsidised in the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). The drugs will then become more affordable to patients like Mrs Taylor, who has tried to cope with the disease that turned her life upside down 12 years ago. After living a completely normal life for 42 years, Mrs Taylor was hit by multiple sclerosis, a disease she said people know very little about. “It started with blurred vision for me, and an MRI scan showed that I had lesions on the brain right behind the optic nerves,” she said. She said the disease has made her lose her eyesight for months and fall over in public – an unfortunate event where passers-by accused her of being drunk. “Everybody around me assumed I was drunk, not one person came to help me

For the past 25 years the site has been a sand and gravel quarry managed by the Penrith Lakes Development Corporation providing over 50 per cent of the sand and gravel required by Sydney’s thriving building industry. An agreement with the State Government was made for the rehabilitation and transition from a quarry to a major regional parkland. With mining now drawing to a close, quarried areas are gradually being rehabilitated and some land will soon be transferred to the NSW Government for an urban precinct, parkland and lakes system. At 1,940 hectares, Penrith Lakes is five times the size of Centennial Park and larger than Sydney’s CBD. A Draft Vision Plan for the area has been developed as a starting point for discussion about what the community thinks would be best for the area. The plan suggests possible uses for the site

and information about the opportunities and challenges these present. It is only a starting point. Input from the community is needed to build a shared vision that will transform Penrith Lakes to the Penrith Lakes Parkland. There is an opportunity to create a legacy that future generations will be proud of and will enjoy. I encourage the community to think about what they would like to see there and submit their suggestions during the consultation process. A community drop in session will be held on Thursday 23 April at Lennox Village Shopping Centre between 5.30pm and 8.30pm. Interest rates on hold for at least another month as property boom continues in Sydney he Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) delivered somewhat of a shock on Tuesday when it defied expectations and left interest rates on hold. It was good news for those with savings but bad news for mortgage holders who were banking on further relief thanks to a 0.25 per cent cut. It’s now hotly anticipated that the RBA will cut rates next month. Mortgage Choice spokesperson Jessica Darnbrough said Sydney’s surging property market ultimately encouraged the Reserve Bank to leave the cash rate alone. “While the falling value of iron ore combined with a sudden slump in both business and consumer sentiment had encouraged many economists to believe that the RBA would cut the cash rate again at the April Board meeting, it seems Sydney’s soaring property values have forced the RBA to leave the cash rate on hold for another month at least,” Ms Darnbrough said. “Over the last 12 months, Sydney’s property values have shot up almost 14 per cent, with research conducted by RP Data showing values in the capital city rose by three per cent in March alone.” Home loan interest via the online portal RateCity jumped by 60 per cent following

T

The RBA has left interest rates on hold

the February rate cut. Despite this, recent data shows more home borrowers are falling behind on loan repayments. “With the extremely low interest rates, and house prices quite high, it’s definitely a time for borrowers to be careful about how much debt they go into and we’d urge all Australians not to stretch beyond their means,” said RateCity’s banking analyst, Peter Arnold. “Rates will eventually go up and when they do you’ll still be on the hook for that debt.” Latest Fitch Ratings data (March) revealed that mortgage performance had worsened, with those falling behind by 30 days or more on their home loan payments increasing to 1.15 per cent (up seven basis points) in the fourth quarter of 2014. The RateCity database shows that the most competitive variable rates are now sitting as low as 4.19 per cent, which is around 0.88 percentage points below the average variable rate. On a $300,000 home loan, switching from the average to one of the cheapest on the market could save borrowers more than $1800 this year. Burglars becoming hungry for tech Notebooks and tablets lead the list of items stolen from houses ew data from NRMA Insurance has revealed portable electronic and storage devices are the most common items stolen from households, highlighting the risk of personal data being accessed or used by thieves after a robbery. NRMA Insurance spokesperson Hannah Dunn said the company’s claims data showed over 2,600 notebooks, tablets and computer accessories had been stolen from NSW and ACT NRMA Insurance customers over the last financial year and is reminding families to secure their homes. “This figure represents a 30 per cent increase of the number of notebooks, tablets and computer accessories stolen during the same period three years ago,” she said. “Our latest claims data shows burglars are also targeting portable and lightweight storage devices such as external hard drives and flash drives, so we’re encouraging the use of security measures on portable devices, such as password protection or encryption. “We are becoming increasingly dependent on portable electronic devices to store personal information, so it’s more important than ever to make sure we are taking steps to keep not only our personal

PENRITH ANGLICAN COLLEGE

Local construction companies urged to keep kids off work sites orkCover NSW is urging builders and construction companies to keep children off construction sites these school holidays following the death of an eight-year-old boy last December. The boy, who was attending his family’s local church, died when a stack of concrete panels being used to build a sound barrier fell on top of him. Acting Executive Director of WorkCover’s Work Health and Safety Division, Jodie Deakes said WorkCover had become aware that children were being brought onto construction sites during holidays and urged the industry to stop the practice. “The construction industry is one of the State’s highest risk industries,” Ms Deakes said. “When a workplace incident occurs, the likelihood of serious injury is high and when you bring a child onto a construction site, it’s a tragedy waiting to happen. “We understand that there is pressure to complete jobs particularly when work falls behind and sometimes it’s not possible to organise child-minding, but construction sites are no place for children and construction companies must have systems and contingency plans in place to prevent this from occurring. “Over the holidays our construction

industry inspectors will be visiting sites to ensure no children are present and check that construction companies have systems to ensure unattended sites are safe.” Ms Deakes said there were a number of actions site controllers could take to make unattended sites safe and secure. “Building sites in an around residential areas pose a heightened risk, particularly as there are more children in the vicinity due to school holidays,” she said. “Site perimeter fencing is the first form of site control and must be installed, maintained and secured in a way that minimises unauthorised entry. The fencing should not have gaps and be locked when the day’s work is complete. “Ensuring power is off, blocking access to elevated floors, scaffolding, and ladders, and storing plant and equipment, tools, chemicals and dangerous goods securely are other actions that can be taken. “Site controllers should also empty water drums, cover pits, trenches and pier holes, and erect appropriate signage, including an after-hours contact number. “By following these steps, and minimising the risk of access by children, site controllers can prevent a similar tragedy to the one that occurred last December while minimising the likelihood of theft of valuable building materials.”

dear weekender... How many times do you have to say it? (Does size matter in Glenmore Park, Western Property April 3). The huge demand for land skyrockets prices. Reduce demand, for example, by reducing net migration and bribes to have more children and the prices will go down. Can anybody on this Council start lobbying the Federal Government to do this or has no one got the guts? DAVID BOWEN, VIA WEBSITE

won’t buy land or build around here. We are currently in Mulgoa Rise (renting) to see if we liked it (try before we might’ve built) but nope, we will buy established with land and space in the Mountains again! Every morning I open my blinds and look straight onto another house or straight into someone else’s window! Why make them even smaller? My son and all kids needs YARDS! Not bricks! BEC RAYNER, VIA FACEBOOK

Traffic nightmare looms

Journalist says goodbye

All good and well to say make lots smaller and more of them but has anyone bothered about the roads surrounding the area and would they upgrade all these roads to accommodate the extra traffic? If so, would these roads be upgraded before the houses go up and families move in or would they do their usual trick and leave that till after and cause even more traffic interruptions and delays to the new and existing surrounding areas in question? BRIAN SMITH, VIA WEBSITE

It is with sadness that I heard that one of Penrith’s most wonderful and talented journalists has left the Western Weekender. I have been associated with Katherine Tweed for many years through numerous local organisations such as Scouts, Little Athletics, Lions Club, Legacy and other volunteer organisations and have found Katherine to be a very talented and honest journalist. Through her role as a journalist, Katherine has supported all the organisations mentioned here and many others, telling the story of LOCAL events and people and encouraging the support of

Katherine, many heartfelt thanks for a job well done and your contribution to the greater Penrith area. I wish you the very best in your new endeavours. ERIC EASTERBROOK, NEPEAN LEGACY

The Honourable Minister Australia wide in recent decades there have been many politicians of dubious to bad character elected and some convicted, and many others of mediocrity, making a stupidity of the title “Honourable” they give themselves. This title should no longer apply unless it is earned over two terms of exemplary conduct and if any politician is proved to have lied three times in any one year they should automatically be disqualified from office, we need a high standard where none now exists; the system continually endorses mediocrity. Victorian Sir Henry Bolte had an assessment team identify suitable people and

PM congratulates Premier I congratulate Premier Baird and his Coalition team on an outstanding victory in the New South Wales state election. Mike is an extremely effective Premier with a vision for a stronger and more prosperous New South Wales. He is also a man of great integrity. Mike stayed the course in the face of a concerted scare campaign by Labor. This result is unambiguously good news for the Liberal Party and for the people of New South Wales. The re-election of a reforming government is also good news for Australia. Under Mike’s leadership, New South Wales has returned to being an economic powerhouse. I look forward to continuing to work with Mike to create jobs, to build the infrastructure New South Wales needs and to reduce the cost of living for families. TONY ABBOTT, PRIME MINISTER

Lee Kuan Yew leaves behind a great legacy During the past few weeks the Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew passed away at the age of 91. What a man he was. He was their Prime Minister for 30 years and during that time he turned Singapore from an ordinary place into a global financial powerhouse. Anyone that has been to Singapore at any time during that 30 years would have to agree that it is the jewel in the crown of the Pacific, and to get a real culture shock check out Changi airport in comparison to Mascot. Lee Kuan Yew was a powerhouse Prime Minister during his time, one that our politicians on both sides could well study and try to emulate if they could. H.A MOORFOOT, GLENMORE PARK

COUNCIL SNAPSHOT Penrith Council has carried the recommendation that Kokoda Place, St Marys be permanently closed. The unused, unformed road adjoins St Marys Shopping Village Centre, and adjacent community land, and has no use for a public road. The road was originally part of Crana St, St Marys but was closed and sold to allow construction of the Village Shopping Centre.

LOCAL RADIO

The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre will receive $600,000 in funding now Penrith Council has accepted a grant from the NSW Government. The Department of Trade and Investment, Regional Infrastructure and Services will provide $500,000 in grant funding under the 2014/2015 ClubGRANTS Scheme, in conjunction with Council funding the Building Asset and Renewal Program of $100,000. The theatre will see upgrades to lighting and audio visual equipment, diversification of rigs in each of the three major venues, new monitors and data cabling and installation of data projection and screen. The implementation of the project will enable the venue to remain a major asset to the city and attract more users and support “new forms of expression as appropriate to the 21st century”. Council will now send WW16278

a letter of thanks to the NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Hospitality, Gaming and Racing Troy Grant for the allocation of the funds. Work will commence on the upgrades in due course. Council will participate in this year’s Future Cities Program where delegates will meet with international urban design and planning experts. The program provides a forum for city leaders and senior staff to meet with these experts, to discuss approaches to building the future of NSW cities. In the past, the program has focused on capacity building and strategic urban planning, but this year will also include approaches that can be delivered at a local government level such as infrastructure to revitalise city centres. Council reports state that Penrith City will have a focus on CBD living opportunities, a project that will be taken to the Mayor’s Forum in early April. In late June, the delegates will tour the United States looking at the ways they manage their livability issues. Penrith has declined previous invitations to be part of the program, but has seen the benefits to Parramatta, and believe Penrith is at a better implementation phase of the Penrith Progression and should participate.

@ktweed_

ulgoa woman, Wendy Bortolazzo is taking her passion for training and re-homing unwanted pets to a new level as she tries to get to the bottom of the underlying issue. After realising that no matter how many dogs she re-homed through her organisation Red Dot Animal Programs, there will always be more out there who are being dumped and put down because they are unwanted, she wanted to do something more to make a change.

M

Ms Bortolazzo has launched a nationwide survey to collect the public’s opinion about desexing dogs; whether they support it, why they do or don’t and whether people believe that desexing has an impact on a dog’s personality, behaviour and performance. “Higher desexing rates are one way to reduce the number of unwanted dogs. The survey aims to help understand what information and assistance is needed to help more dog owners prevent unplanned litters,” she said. Local residents can take part in the survey at www.reddotdogs.com until April 20.

If you are interested in taking part or would like further details, please contact: Mrs. Izabella Pokorski; Phone 4734 2599 or 4734 4278. The research is being conducted by: Professor Gustavo Duque and Dr. Piumali Gunawardene at Nepean Hospital.

This research study has been approved by the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Human Research Ethics Committee and is being conducted in accordance with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Research Involving Humans (2007). WW16806

far cry from her office desk as a speech therapist, Diana Wolf has signed up to a new challenge – to climb almost six kilometres up an African mountain. As a partner in Nepean Speech and Language Services (NSLS) speech pathology, and a board member of the Luke Priddis Foundation, Ms Wolf has been helping children to learn how to communicate for over 20 years, and she won’t stop, even on holidays. Ms Wolf saw her trip as an opportunity to further help children with Autism, and has set a goal to raise $3,000 ahead of reaching the top of Tanzania’s 5,895 metre Mt Kilamanjaro. “The moment I decided to do it I thought ‘I’m raising money’,” she said. “Mt Everest’s base camp [in Asia] is 5,300 metres above sea level so ‘Killy’ is the highest walkable mountain that people can go up. “Temperatures will get to about minus 20 degrees because it’s so high.” The trek to the top of the world’s highest climbable mountain will take Ms Wolf eight days, starting on July 7 this year. “On the last day, the highest place

A

we can camp is still a fair way from the summit, so we have to get up at midnight to start a 15 hour trek, to get back to camp before it’s dark again,” she said. Ms Wolf said the funds she hopes to raise will go toward the Luke Priddis Foundation to subsidise expensive communication programs for parents with Autistic children. “The program is called Hanen – More Than Words, and it teaches parents how to interpret all the different things kids in the Autism spectrum do and try to make it into a communication interaction,” she said. “It’s parent training, and it’s worldwide recognised and very successful… we’ve run them a few times at NSLS but they’re very expensive. “Elsewhere, they cost $2,300 for the 10 week program. I want to either give it to families for free, or for half price, just depending on how much money is raised.” Ms Wolf is no stranger to fundraising walks, and participated in last year’s 35 kilometre Bloody Long Walk from Palm Beach to Manly. Ms Wolf’s fundraising page can be accessed via https://give.everydayhero. com/au/diana-16 which is also linked into the Luke Priddis Foundation. She’s hoping for lots of local support.

The Commonwealth Government will be working with States and Territories to develop a National Ice Action Strategy to tackle the growing scourge of ice (crystal methamphetamine). “Ice use is a growing problem right around our nation. Ice is ruining individuals, destroying families, and hurting communities,” Prime Minister Tony Abbott said in a joint statement with Assistant Health Minister Fiona Nash and Justice Minister Michael Keenan on Wednesday. The first step in developing a National Ice Action Strategy will be the establishment of a National Ice Taskforce. Assistant Minister for Health Fiona

Nash and Minister for Justice Michael Keenan will oversee the Taskforce and lead the government’s response to the ice issue. The Taskforce will be led by Ken Lay APM who was Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police from 2011 until very recently. The overall purpose of the Taskforce will be to examine all existing efforts to address ice and identify ways to take a systematic, comprehensive and coordinated approach to education, health and law enforcement. The Taskforce will consult widely to ensure that all aspects of this menace are being addressed.

Lending a helping hand to Vanuatu Penrith’s generous spirit extends to Vanuatu as locals chip in to help rebuild the devastated region KATHERINE TWEED

@ktweed_

egentville fire fighter, Raymond Irving, has just returned from a disaster relief mission in Vanuatu, where a recent tropical cyclone destroyed everything in its path. Mr Irving, a NSW Fire and Rescue officer from Regentville Fire Station, was part of a 56-person Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) task force mission sent to the country to help in the aftermath. The damage was extensive and thousands of buildings were destroyed but the team of Australians didn’t balk, despite the fact that for some, including Mr Irving, it was their first deployment. “It was a bit like, as most people in western Sydney would know, when a bush fire devastates an area, except that nothing was burnt. I had never seen anything like it but the closest thing I can compare it to would be a bush fire, like the fires in October 2013,” Mr Irving said. “There was very little greenery, all the trees had either been knocked down or stripped of their leaves, there were houses without roofs everywhere and there was no power. When we first arrived we were driving over power lines and driving

R

Ray Irving, Mark Bradford, Steve Waters and Shannon Crofton in Vanuatu

around roofs that were just laying in the middle of the road.” The deployment was split into groups, with each team focusing on a different aspect of the recovery mission. Mr Irving’s group worked specifically with schools, repairing roofs that had been ripped off the buildings, returning doors back to their rightful places and fixing awnings to make the schools more secure. “We got to see a lot of the kids and their parents, who would come along each day to help us. They would gather all the wood and metal and would do whatever they could to help us. They worked really hard as did we,” Mr Irving said. “They were very grateful for our help, especially for the resources and the equipment that we brought with us. They were so positive, they weren’t downcast or depressed. It was amazing, considering that some of these people helping us didn’t have roofs on their own homes. It was very humbling.” By the time their 10-day mission was up, life was dramatically improved for the locals. “We got there to find a broken mess and we were able to leave it 10 days later in a much better condition,” Mr Irving said.

Making the M4 smarter

The M4 could be set to become a lot ‘smarter’ thanks to new initiatives ommunity members are reminded to make a submission to the M4 Smart Motorway Concept Design and Review of Environmental Factors (REF) by today (Friday, April 10). Roads and Maritime Services is inviting written feedback to the proposed Concept Design and REF to inform the next stage of plans for the project. The documents are available to view at Penrith City Council while information is also on display at Services NSW Mt Druitt and St Marys registries. The proposal outlines smart motorway technology which will be used to manage congestion in real time on a 36 kilometre stretch of the M4 between Pitt Street at Mays Hill and Lapstone. Key benefits of the proposal include slashing travel times by up to 15 minutes which will save motorists money by reducing vehicle running costs. Initiatives proposed include:

C

•

Traffic sensors at about 500 metre intervals on the motorway and on entry and exit ramps, to detect changes in traffic flow in real time. • Coordinated, fast-changing entry ramp signals to keep traffic flowing on the motorway and make merging easier and safer. • New lane use management gantries to open and close lanes in response to incidents. • More variable message and speed limit signs, particularly before exit points • New electronic signs on approach roads to warn of traffic conditions and travel times. • Additional emergency telephones, stopping bays and traffic cameras to continually monitor traffic conditions would also be in place. Submissions can be sent to m4smartmotorway@rms.nsw.gov.au.

Inspiring quotes from inspiring women

Making working from home work for you

Michelle Grice // Founder of Shel Design

Michael Todd // Small Biz Connect Advisor Penrith Valley BEC

t has been a while since I’ve listed some of my favourite quotes from inspiring women but I think it is important to look to those who have ‘gone before us’ so that we can be inspired and learn from their experiences, mistakes and successes. This quote from Mary Anne Radmacher (author) is so important, especially for those of us who sit more on the introvert end of the personality spectrum and may feel that we have to be ‘loud’ about what we do: “Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow.’”. Persistence and determination are vital to achieving any success in your business. Gail Blanke, President and CEO, of a company called Lifedesigns, said “Walt Disney told his crew to ‘build the castle first’ when constructing Disney World, knowing that vision would continue to serve as motivation throughout the project. Oftentimes when people fail to achieve what they want in life, it’s because their vision isn’t strong enough”.

I think many of us struggle with this! We have a vague idea of what we want to achieve, but without a strong vision, we are unlikely to achieve it. As most of us are no doubt aware, any success in business does not get handed to us on a silver platter! Madam C.J. Walker (America’s first female entrepreneur millionaire), put it like this: “There is no royal flowerstrewn path to success. And if there is, I have not found it, for if I have accomplished anything in life it is because I have been willing to work hard.” And a classic quote from Roseanne Barr (actress) sums up the attitude I think we all have to take in our businesses: “The thing women have yet to learn is nobody gives you power. You just take it”. What are some of your favourite quotes from successful women around the world? I’d love to hear them! Email news@westernweekender.com.au and the team at the Weekender will forward them on to me. If there’s a topic you’d like me to tackle, feel free to write to news@ westernweekender.com.au.

F

or people initially, working from home is an attractive option, but finding that balance between work time and personal time can be a

blur. Working at home has its advantages. No commuting, flexible hours allow you to take care of personal issues and make up for lost time on evenings or weekends. On the flip side, when you have lots of work on your plate it’s tempting to use those evenings and weekends. It’s easy to think that every hour in the day and night is potential revenue. Interruptions are another problem. Between kids, home chores and the television, it’s easy to be distracted and is fuel for procrastination. It sometimes feels like you never leave work and never get anything done. So, answers? • Set standard start and stop times for your work, and make exceptions to that schedule truly exceptional. When you’re at work, don’t allow personal interruptions that aren’t emergencies. Your family should pretend you’re onsite while you’re on the clock. • Conversely, make sure you leave the

office at your standard check-out time and leave your work there, too. Being able to enjoy your personal life is presumably the reason why you work so hard anyway. This doesn’t mean that your standard work hours have to be Monday through Friday from 8.00am to 6.00pm. So schedule some work time every Saturday, and keep part of a weekday open instead. Or you can even slide that opening around to make it to your kids’ school play, but make sure you account for it. You don’t ever want to feel guilty about working too little or too much. • Get some exercise into your days. It will give you energy and strength. Bring lunch to work and instead knock off for an hour or so to do some exercise. • Have work free days/weekends. Spend the weekends relaxing, spending time with family and having fun. By maintaining a clear separation between work time and home time, you can enjoy both while looking forward to each transition. Have a great weekend.

HISTORY

Turning back Time

How the railway killed the inn Nathan Taylor investigates the long, amazing history of the Arms of Australia Inn Museum at Emu Plains...

The Arms of Australia Inn as it stands today

A

s you whip up the Great Western Highway through Emu Plains on the way to the beautiful Blue Mountains you’ll notice an historic, mustard in colour building to your right that was once one of 23 roadside inns in the Nepean district back in the mid 1800s. The Arms of Australia Inn Museum, as it is now known, was once a staging post for travellers making the trip from Sydney over the Blue Mountains to Bathurst and the booming goldfields out west. The building is considered to be one of the oldest, if not the oldest in the Penrith area, and was originally built in two sections. The first section was built around 1826 and was purchased on May 1, 1833 by Joseph Barrow Montefiore. Mr Montefiore later split the land in two and sold half to John Mortimer, who commenced trading as an inn on the main road to Bathurst, Orange and the NSW goldfields. Many coaches that plied the road day

and night would stop at the inn as did many bullock team drivers taking stock and provisions over the mountains. As the inn only had two main rooms, most overnight travellers had to sleep in the barn, on the veranda or under their wagons. A year later strict laws were put in place that instructed inns to have separate rooms for ladies and children. Mr Mortimer complied with the new rules and added four additional rooms for bedrooms. During this wild and wacky time out west, where everyone wanted to strike it rich, bushrangers became a massive problem in the area. The Arms and a second inn at the top of the hill at Glenbrook had a system to warn travellers if bushrangers were about. This was accomplished by the Glenbrook inn hanging a lantern on their building which was visible to the Arms. If the lantern was burning, the road was clear, but if it was not, the stagecoach drivers and other travellers would spend the night at the Arms and then continue on the next morning. The inn continued to prosper until the

1860s before it took a huge hit when the rail line came through the area. Instead of travelling by road, people began to use the fast and efficient train service and trade at the inn quickly died off. The Arms of Australia Inn was sold in 1865 and became a private house for the next 100 years, when it was then sold to Lucas & Tait for subdivision. In 1972, rather than having the historic building demolished, the Nepean District Historical Society (NDHS) asked Penrith Council to purchase the site. The Council thought it was a good idea to preserve Penrith’s rich history and allowed the NDHS to take control of the building. The society began the mammoth task of restoring the property until it was officially opened on March 27, 1976 as a museum of local history for the Nepean district. These days, due to its colourful history, the Arms of Australian Inn Museum provides an interesting venue for local activities, tour groups, special events, school tours and exhibitions. The museum contains thousands of photos and artefacts that were either used

or manufactured in the local area and are on display for the public to see. Along with glass displays, there are also a number of hands-on interactive displays including old gramophones, a pedal powered organ, old sewing machines, old adding machines, a 1920’s telephone switchboard and hand cranked telephones. There is also agricultural equipment including old grindstone and hand washing mangles, wood stoves, pre-electric refrigerators and blacksmiths equipment. The NDHS also conducts tours by kerosene lanterns of the museum in the evenings. The tours are designed to take you back to the 1800s and give visitors a sense of what it was like to live without power or running water. The museum is also believed to be haunted with a number of paranormal teams investigating the building and its surrounds over the years. Members of the NDHS have reported many strange occurrences at the inn over the years, including artefacts being moved from their usual position during the night.

van Cleary and Geoff Toovey have plenty in common at the moment. Both are desperate for victories, both have key playmakers missing from their side (including their first choice goal kickers) and both know the importance of this weekend’s clash at Pepper Stadium. Cleary knows that a fourth straight defeat would shatter his young Penrith side’s confidence – he’s one to ensure his side learns from losses but right now he really, really needs a win. Toovey, meanwhile, is just trying to keep his battered Manly outfit together as the club works through a bad injury toll and off-field dramas including the defection of Daly Cherry-Evans and Kieran Foran to the Titans and Eels respectively. Manly are still missing Jamie Lyon (groin) and Steve Matai (elbow) and both are heavy losses to a Sea Eagles side that

rely on both of those men for points on a weekly basis. Jamie Buhrer has been named to play despite suffering from concussion and will have to prove his fitness later in the week. The Panthers will welcome back Sika Manu into the second row, and with Dean Whare suffering a hamstring injury, Jamal Idris’ career switch to the second row has been cut short after just one match – he’ll be back in the backline on Saturday evening. Cleary named Apisai Koroisau at fiveeighth when the teams were released on Tuesday but there’s speculation that the situation will change before kick-off. Personally, I can’t see why Isaac John – a solid back-up in the halves and a proven first grader – was forced to play NSW Cup last weekend while the Panthers tried their fourth halves combination in as many matches. Whether or not John squeezes his way back into the top side for Saturday night’s game will most likely not be known until the hours before kick-off.

PANTHERS V SEA EAGLES SATURDAY, APRIL 11 • 7.30PM PEPPER STADIUM REFEREES: JARED MAXWELL AND CHRIS JAMES TV: FOX SPORTS LIVE 7.30PM RADIO: 2GB LIVE 7.30PM The Panthers lacked urgency last week in the second half and allowed a better side to get on top of them, while at times star gazing at the multi-talented Johnathan Thurston and allowing themselves to be affected by video referee decisions not going their way. Without Jamie Soward, the Panthers lack any clear direction on the field – it’s actually quite amazing how much the side misses him. Those slick back-line plays just aren’t the

same without Soward and while he does struggle in defence, his organisation skills are vital to Penrith’s ability to hold sides at bay. The Cowboys tested Penrith’s left-side defence constantly last weekend – identifying that Idris wasn’t there and that youngster Waqa Blake would most likely be finding his feet. It was a smart game plan and Manly will also test Penrith’s edges – they’ll try to tempt Josh Mansour to rush in (as he’s been doing a fair bit since returning against the Roosters) and take advantage of the inexperience of Blake and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak. Penrith have every chance to win this game on Saturday night and in truth are probably the better side on paper. But yes, there is reason to be concerned. It’s not panic stations yet – far from it – but the Panthers really do need a win to get things back on track. Right now, I’m not totally sure they have the confidence to pull it off. But tip Manly? Nah, I just can’t do it.

with the

Masked Panther

» There are huge question marks over

the short term future of Brent Kite at the Panthers. Everybody is keeping pretty tight lipped about it but there’s a lot of speculation suggesting Kite was dropped from last weekend’s clash with North Queensland and wasn’t injured. The Panthers would have too much respect for Kite, a 300-plus game veteran, to make him play NSW Cup, particularly at this stage of his career. It’ll be interesting to see what happens from here in terms of Kite’s short-term playing future. He hasn’t been named in the side to play Manly this Saturday.

» Lachlan Coote returned to Penrith

IS KITE HURT OR WAS HE DROPPED?

Stadium for the first time since leaving the club on Monday night, and certainly had a good game – even scoring a try on his birthday. Coote is still a popular figure around Penrith – he spent a fair bit of time after the game mingling with both Cowboys and Panthers fans.

» Spotted: Panthers coach Ivan Cleary

enjoying a family birthday celebration at Outback Steakhouse last Thursday night.

» There’s a few people in rugby league

circles who want to tell you that Dragons forward Trent Merrin is considering backing out on his deal with the Panthers for next season. Merrin has until June 30 to turn his back on the Penrith deal and stay with St George-Illawarra. Despite the speculation, there doesn’t appear to be much in it. The rumours aren’t a surprise given the Dragons are suddenly playing well and the Panthers are in the midst of a form slump, but only someone with very short-term thinking would let that affect their decision making.

» The Panthers v Cowboys game may

have attracted less than 9,000 people to the ground on Monday night, but it was a huge winner on television. 280,000 people watched the match on Fox Sports. In fact, the NRL dominated pay television viewing on Monday with the Tigers v Eels match attracting 304,000 viewers and the Storm v Warriors clash topping that with 306,000.

» What about this for a stat – Elijah Taylor made an incredible 77 tackles against the Cowboys on Monday night. Considering he missed a further three tackles, that means he attempted a tackle in every single minute of the clash on Monday!

Lachlan Coote mixing with fans on Monday night. Photo: Melinda Jane

» The Panthers will have to overcome

some significant statistical hurdles if they’re to beat Manly on Saturday night. Not once in the Ivan Cleary era have the Panthers recorded a victory after playing in a Monday night game the week prior. Plus, the Panthers have an awful winning percentage against Manly – just 35.4 per cent of all time matches. Melbourne is the only club that troubles Penrith more. That said, the Sea Eagles are in big trouble with only one win this season.

» The fact that the NRL lets TV broad-

casters determine its schedule means some clubs are significantly disadvantaged when it comes to turnarounds. Penrith will be forced into a five-day turnaround this weekend, yet on Sunday the Dragons and Bulldogs will play after a eight and nine day turnaround respectively.

» Dean Whare is expected to miss two

weeks of footy due to a hamstring injury.

Taylor is a tackling machine The Panthers may have lost to the Cowboys on Monday night, but Elijah Taylor was a star for his side, making 77 tackles

NATHAN TAYLOR natetaylor87

T

he one shining light from Penrith’s 20 point loss to the North Queensland Cowboys on Monday night was Elijah Taylor’s record breaking tackle count. The Panthers lock and New Zealand international set, what many believe to be, a new record for most tackles in an 80 minute game with 77 tackles. Proving he is Penrith’s biggest asset in defence, Taylor attempted 80 tackles on the night and made all but three of them. Records suggest that former Parramatta skipper Nathan Hindmarsh and Raiders lock Shaun Fensom previously held the tackling record with 75 tackles in a single game. On Tuesday afternoon, Extra Time revealed to Taylor what he had unbelievably achieved the night before. “I didn’t know I made that many. I’m pretty surprised that it was that high but I’m more concerned about the two points we didn’t get than getting a lot of tackles,” he admitted. “Not many people watch defence these days. It seems whenever I get a high tackle

count we lose games, so it’s not really a stat to be proud of.” While the 25-year-old is clearly understating his achievement, he knows he’s going to have to do it all over again this Saturday night against the Manly Sea Eagles. Penrith are currently staring down the barrel of four straight losses and will need every bit of defence from Taylor and his teammates to stop that from happening. “Tackling is my job for my teammates, it’s my job for my club and for my coaches, and if I’m not willing to do that then there’s a lot of depth in our squad,” Taylor said. “Adam Docker is coming back from suspension, Nigel Plum can play 13, so if I’m not willing to do that job then someone will take my position.” Despite losing the last three straight games, Taylor insists that the Panthers are still full of confidence but believes there are areas that need attention immediately. “Every game you go into you plan to win, you train to win, you prepare to win, so three down on the trot is disappointing but there’s a lot of lessons to be learnt,” he said. One of the factors in Penrith’s early season slide from a fan’s point of view is the loss of Jamie Soward. Since Soward

Taylor makes a tackle on Monday was sidelined following back surgery after Round 2, the Panthers haven’t won a single game. Taylor said the loss of the star playmaker has had an affect on the team. “Jamie’s instrumental in our team. He’s a leader, he influences and he knows how to control the game,” he said. “Jamie knows when to speed it up, he knows when to slow it down. He knows when to apply pressure.”

KEV’S KORNER

WITH KEVIN KINGSTON

I TIME TO GIVE THE REFS SOME PRAISE

t’s been an interesting few weeks in the world of rugby league. We’ve had misbehaving players and misbehaving fans, but the majority of talk has been about referees. From controversial video ref calls to discrepancies in rule interpretations on the field; it seems the list of things to discuss at the moment is endless. But do we ever think what it might be like to be a referee on the receiving end of all the criticism? I mean, who would want to be a ref these days? And who will be the next generation of refs? At the end of the day, there can’t be a game of footy without a referee, and we won’t have a new batch coming through unless we start looking after them. Every rugby league fan wants a clear cut reason as to why their team lost. The easiest thing to do is blame the ref! As we saw in the Souths v Bulldogs game last weekend, even when they do get the call right for one team, the other team isn’t happy. In any game, a ref may have to rule on 100 or more decisions on the field. Some will be the right call, and some will be wrong. It seems we only want to focus on the latter, and that’s a real shame. We never hear about, or praise a ref if they’ve had a really good game. But they are human. They make mistakes. Let’s not forget – even the most seasoned of players will get it wrong sometimes. Now I don’t know what referees make, salary-wise, but it’s definitely not enough.

And to do that, we can’t be scaring off the next generation of referees by throwing bottles at them as they come off the field, or hurling abuse at them on the sideline. I tip my hat to all referees. You’re doing a great job and you’re an important part of our great game. Keep up the good work.

It doesn’t matter if they ref an under 10’s match or a State of Origin, it’s a tough job and they need a pretty thick skin to make it through. We need to start focusing more on the positives in our game and try to get more young people involved to grow the sport.

NATHAN TAYLOR natetaylor87

P

anthers prop Sam McKendry admits he’s never played 80 minutes of football in his life but is open to the prospect of possibly having to play close to that if the NRL introduces changes to the interchange system next year. Recently, the NRL announced that it was conducting a review of the interchange rules aimed at making the game safer and more exciting. The review, to be done in consultation with State Leagues, the CRL, RLPA and UK Super League, will consider both the number of interchanges and the composition of the bench. Since 2012, interchanges in professional rugby league currently sit at 10 replacements per game but under a new interchange structure that could be reduced to between six and eight replacements per game – allowing the little men to wreak havoc against the NRL’s tiring big men. “I think it would be pretty good, it would be interesting,” McKendry told Extra Time. “I’ve never played 80 minutes in my

Meanwhile, 25-year-old McKendry has revealed he’s taken on more of a leadership role this season. Following the departure of old friend Tim Grant to the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the off-season, McKendry is now the only remaining member of Penrith’s famous Big Five which included himself, Grant, Lachlan Coote, Michael Jennings and Luke Lewis. With Brent Kite and Nigel Plum also set to leave the club at season’s end through retirement, McKendry knows there’s no better time than now to lead Penrith into the new era. “I sure do see myself as a leader. There’s good young kids coming through like Reggy (Reagan Campbell-Gillard) and it’s always good to show them the ropes,” he said. “With Trent Merrin coming next year we’ve got plenty of go-forward leading into the future.” While McKendry is generally a quiet character off the field, he’s far from it when a game is underway. “I try and talk a little bit but my actions speak louder than words,” he said. “I’m a nice guy off the field but when I cross that white line I know when to flick the switch.”

HART TO HART

WITH STEVE HART

I DES HASLER MUST TAKE THE BLAME

t’s about time NRL coaches took some responsibility for the disgraceful way their players and fans treat match officials. There is no doubt that what happened on “BAD FRIDAY” at ANZ Stadium between the Bulldogs and Rabbitohs was a direct flow-on effect from Bulldogs coach Des Hasler’s lack of respect for officials. For some time it has bothered me when attending Des Hasler’s press conferences the obvious contempt he has for NRL authority. When the NRL attempted to minimise the criticism of its officials this year by banning coaches from criticising their performances what did Des do? Like the smart arse kid at school he called them “Voldermort” – a reference to the fictional character in the Harry Potter books, “He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named”. Perhaps by itself it is quite funny but it’s also complete contempt for the NRL rules and its authority. What message do his players get when they see that from their coach? NRL rules are a joke and so are referees? Of course it’s not just Hasler that does it, the super coach Wayne Bennett has been doing it for years as well. It was no major surprise when Wayne’s number one student Darius Boyd began treating the media also with contempt. Monkey see, monkey do. So when James Graham, a very decent guy with plenty of respect and manners off the field, suddenly goes off his head screaming at a referee for a decision he doesn’t like where

Canterbury captain James Graham does he get the idea that this is OK? Why would James Graham, David Klemmer and even Michael Liccha all think that getting up in the grill of a referee and swearing at him was OK? Is it any surprise that fans also think that abusing officials is totally acceptable? Yes, James Graham has copped plenty

for his poor behaviour last Friday night but his coach Des Hasler also needs to put his hand up and start doing a better job of respecting authority in the game as well. In fact all coaches should take a well overdue lesson from this one and be better role models for their players and fans. The game would be better for it.

FAN OF THE WEEK Years supporting the Panthers: Since birth. Favourite current Panther and favourite ex-Panther: Elijah Taylor and Royce Simmons. Brisbane Why do you support the Panthers? For me it’s just a natural thing to support the team in the city I grew up in. I’ve seen first-hand the struggles during the 1980’s through to the success of 1991 and 2003 and disappointments in between. You can take the boy out of Penrith but never Penrith out of the boy. What’s your best Panthers memory? While the 2003 Grand Final holds so many great memories, it was the 1991 Grand Final for me. Brought to you by… If the Panthers won the 2015 Grand Final, how would you react? I think it would be just like 2003. Tears flowing like a river!

PANTHERS SHOW PLENTY OF SPIRIT TO POST COMEBACK VICTORY OVER THE COWBOYS The Penrith Panthers have bounced back from a disappointing loss the week prior in Newcastle to defeat the thirdplaced North Queensland Cowboys 3222 at Pepper Stadium on Monday night. The Panthers were down by as much as 10 points in the first half but managed to steam home in the second to steal the much-needed win. The Cowboys were the first to put points on the board when fullback Yamba Bowie offloaded the ball to his winger Gideon Mosby, who raced 25m to score. Just three minutes later, the Panthers hit back through Maliko Filino, who broke through the Cowboys defence – palming off a number of players along the way – to score. With Penrith down by two after missing the conversion, the North Queenslanders were the next to post points when Brandon Smith went over from dummy half to extend the visitors’ lead 12-4. The eight point deficit didn’t bother the Panthers, though, who made sure they were in next 14 minutes before the break. Panthers winger Braidon Burns scored a great try in the corner after receiving a brilliant cut out pass from

PANTHERS BACK TO THEIR WINNING WAYS BUT SEA EAGLES POSE A BIG DANGER THIS WEEKEND

halfback Soni Luke to edge the home side closer. But a Penrith mistake saw the Cowboys strike once again six minutes before the break to extend their lead 18-8. With the clock winding down to the half-time siren, Panthers lock Tyrone May put on a brilliant individual display – sidestepping a number of players – to find a hole and score. The Dylan Edwards conversion was successful and Penrith were down 18-14 at half-time. Down by just four points, Cameron Ciraldo’s men were full of confidence heading out for the second half and it showed on the scoreboard. The Panthers scored the next three tries (Corey Harawira-Naera, Kaide Ellis and Braidon Burns) to open up a 14 point lead, 32-18, on the competition heavyweights. A consolation try to the Cowboys not long before full-time made the score a little bit more respectable but the night well and truly belonged to the Mountain Men. This Saturday evening the seventhplaced Panthers will return to Pepper Stadium to take on the Manly Sea Eagles in Round 6 of the Holden Cup. Manly are also coming off a win.

A 66th minute penalty goal to Will Smith ultimately proved to be the difference as Penrith recorded their first win since Round 2 in a high quality game despite the wet conditions. The Penrith forward pack paved the way early on and allowed their halves to execute an aggressive kick chase game that would see the Tigers often start their sets from deep inside their own half. Coach Garth Brennan was pleased with the result given the win was achieved against quality opposition along with the fact that Waqa Blake and Sam Anderson were late withdrawals, although Penrith did receive some good news with the inclusion of Isaac John. After a tense opening 20 minute period, it was Penrith who finished the stronger in the first half to lead 10-nil at half-time thanks to two tries from centre Nu’u Akeripa. In direct contrast to last week’s plethora of first half errors against the Knights, it took 34 minutes for the Panthers to make their only error of the first half. However errors crept back into Penrith’s game early in the second half which allowed the Tigers to level the scores with 20 minutes remaining through tries to Chance Peni and Shannon McDonnell.

Penrith regained the lead five minutes later after a long run from Robert Jennings saw the centre rounded up short of the try-line. An ensuing penalty in the play the ball gifted Smith the simplest of penalty goals. Wests Tigers had chances to steal the game but a combination of poor execution and desperate Panthers defence allowed the defending premiers to hang on for a crucial two-point victory. With that win behind them, Penrith go into this Saturday’s home game against Manly looking for back-to-back wins. The Sea Eagles will be no pushovers despite their lowly position on the ladder having taken ladder-leaders Mounties down to the wire before losing 26-24. Manly, led by experienced fullback David Williams, have a decent forward pack that Penrith will need to overcome in order to win this one with the likes of Siosasa Vave, Jayden Hodges, Tyson Andrews and Blake Leary. In team news, Penrith welcomes back Sam Anderson to start in the front row with Andy Saunders reverting back to the bench. Joining him on the bench is Chris Smith, who switches places with James FisherHarris to start in the back-row

Delltones never stop KATE REID @kate_reid6

W

hen I got on the phone to The Delltones frontman Ian ‘Peewee’ Wilson – aka the Beanpole of Bop – he had just come back from a performance in Sydney over the Easter long weekend. Though most would resent having to work over the holidays, Ian says, to him, none of his time with The Delltones has ever felt like work. “I haven’t done a day’s work for 56 years,” he said.

“Every day’s a holiday for me more or less.” The Delltones originally formed in 1958 when four members of the Bronte Surf Club – Noel Widerberg, Brian Perkins, Warren Lucas and Ian ‘Peewee’ Wilson – got together to dip their toes into the pop/ rock music scene. “I was 18 at the time and most of my friends and my contemporaries were all listening to pop music and rock and roll so we become infatuated,” Ian said. Their harmonies and fun, entertaining stage presence led the group into a genre known as doo-wop. “We were listening to doo-wop music, the vocal groups that were coming out at the time, and it seemed like a damn good idea for us because all of us hated work,” he said. “We just didn’t want to work, so we

“I think there’s always going to be an affection for this type of music”

thought this is one way of getting out of work. And we knew that pop stars were attracting chicks, so it was a no-brainer,” he laughed. During the early years the group found a mentor in rock and roll singer, iconic performer and ‘Wild One’ Johnny O’Keefe. The Delltones were given the opportunity to appear on Johnny’s show ‘Six O’Clock Rock’ along with a host of other contemporaries “Johnny was like a magnet, he was just an attractive dude and also quite eccentric. And I think he just seemed, to all of us, as somebody who knew what he was doing,” Ian said. “He was a charismatic performer and it was just exciting to be around him.” Local audiences will have the chance to experience the fun and energy of The Delltones live when they appear at the Evan Theatre at Penrith Panthers on Saturday, May 16. The show will start with unplugged versions of some of their classic tracks including ‘Come a Little Bit Closer’, ‘Get A Little Dirt on Your Hands’ and ‘Hangin’ Five’. The second half of the show will be dedicated to the band’s revival in the mid-80’s and will include tracks like ‘Get A Job’ and ‘Mr Bassman’. When asked why he thinks The Delltones have sustained their music career for so long, Ian believes it is simply all about the music. “I think there’s always going to be an affection for this type of music that more or less started it all,” he said. “It’s infectious music in the sense that it’s lighthearted, it’s aimed at the heart and the feet.” He also admits that their resurgence in the 80’s helped The Delltones gain popularity with a new, younger audience. “In The Delltones case in particular we’ve been very fortunate because not only do we have an audience from that late 50’s, early 60’s period in the development of Australian pop, but also because The Delltones had a revival in the 80’s with a revival album called ‘Bop Til Ya Drop’ that did very well,” he said. “We found ourselves on shows like ‘Hey, Hey It’s Saturday’ and ‘The Midday Show’ and we become a bit of a fad at the time, and I think that brought on a whole new audience for us. “I think that’s sustained us through to today. We’ve been very fortunate, and I’m humbled by that fact that The Delltones after all these years, over half a century, are still working and we still have an audience. It’s something that’s just addictive for me.” The Delltones will be performing at the Evan Theatre on Saturday, May 16 at 8pm. Tickets are $40. To make a booking or for more information visit www.penrith. panthers.com.au or call 4720 5555. The Weekender has five The Delltones prize packs to give away. Each pack contains a double pass to their show at the Evan Theatre plus a CD. For your chance to win, email the code word ‘DELLTONES’ to competitions@westernweekender. com.au with your name and contact details. Entries close Wednesday, April 15. Authorised under NSW Permit Number LTPM/15/00066. Terms and conditions at www.westernweekender.com.au or Weekender reception.

CINEMA Home

Rated G // STEPHEN BISSET If you’re looking for a fun, engaging and highly endearing flick to keep the kids occupied these school holidays, ‘Home’ could be just the ticket. Taking leaves from the books of ‘ET’ and ‘Lilo and Stitch’, the story centres on the loveable alien Oh (voiced by the Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons), a member of the Boov race. Constantly on the run from a more hostile alien species known as the Gorg, the Boov now arrive on Earth and go about colonising the planet. After Oh finds himself on the run after being accused of alerting the hostile Gorg to the Boov’s location, he crosses paths with a plucky 13-year-old girl Tip (Rhianna), one of the few humans to avoid the initial body snatching, who is searching for

her abducted mother. While certainly not breaking any new ground, this straightforward flick comes with buckets of heart thanks to a great chemistry between Rhianna and Parsons. If you’ve seen him as Sheldon in ‘The Big Bang Theory’, you’d know Parsons knows a bit about comic timing – a skill that is clearly evident again in ‘Home’. Comedic legend Steve Martin also pops up as the Boov’s goofy leader Captain Smek. It’s definitely one to check out over the school holidays. You may just find out what the real meaning of ‘home’ is. It’s an enjoyable trip to the movies.

Bluesfest 2015 // KATE REID

Last week thousands of music lovers descended on Byron Bay for the annual blues and roots music festival ‘Bluesfest’. Whether you missed out on the festival, or just want to relive the magic, this compilation album features some of the best blues and roots music from the lineup that featured a host of local and international artists. The album features a massive 38 tracks from big names including Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Donovon Frankenreiter, Paul Kelly, Jimmy Cliff, Alabama Shakes and David Gray. ‘Bluesfest 2015’ offers a nice mix of tracks, from the laidback to the foot stomping. Regardless of whether you’re into the blues and roots scene or not there’s plenty to love about this album. And of course the best part of any compilation album is the opportunity to sample the fruits of a range of artists across the genres.

‘Interstellar’ is set in a future where the Earth is slowly running out of food. Extreme climate change has led to failing crops and huge dust storms that wreck havoc on everything in its path. While most of the population is focused on agriculture to sustain food supplies, NASA is secretly working to find another planet for humans to inhabit. Former NASA pilot Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) is asked to join the team and must make the hard decision to

leave his two children and head up the expedition that will take him and two other researchers, including Dr Brand (Anne Hathaway), through a wormhole to explore three different planets that have the potential to become a new home for humankind. This film from Christopher Nolan follows in the footsteps of the director’s previous mind bending blockbusters like ‘Inception’. It’s intelligent, thought provoking and the visuals are absolutely stunning. The family component of the film adds plenty of emotion to the story and the twists and turns in the plotline keep you guessing until the very end. Matthew McConaughey plays a solid leading man as the loving father and scientist Cooper, but it’s Jessica Chastain as his grown up daughter Murph who really steals the show. ‘Interstellar’ also features another big name actor that Nolan decided to keep off the marketing for the film. This choice is a little strange and makes the moment of revelation a little jarring. When he first appears on screen it’s such a surprise that it takes you out of the story and puts the focus on the actor rather than the character.

Overall ‘Interstellar’ is another beautifully shot science fiction blockbuster with a compelling storyline and thought provoking subject matter.

WINE LIST

A drop to savour

I

t’s close to 20 years – 19 in fact – since Tim Adams and wife Pam Goldsack made their first Tim Adams Fergus, a Grenache-based blend they named after neighbour Fergus Mahon who sold them some Grenache back in 1993 during a desperate shortage in the Clare Valley of Shiraz and Cabernet fruit. Since that pioneering drop of 85 per cent Grenache and 15 per cent Cabernet in those desperate times, The Fergus has comprised Grenache with various other reds, the latest being the 2012 that’s 35 per cent Grenache from the Mahon’s Fergus Vineyard, 35 per cent Tempranillo from Tim’s Ladera Vineyard, and 30 per cent from his Sheoak Vineyard at Watervale. The result is a wonderfully mouth-filling wine with Grenache spiciness to the fore, nice plum and red berry flavours, gentle tannins and beautiful floral aromas, all combining to achieve Tim’s aim of a corner-stone drop reflecting commitment to quality and traditional Clare Valley wine styles. Remarkably it’s just $24, and if you can resist the temptation to get into it now (with, we’d suggest, Confit of Duck) it’ll reward beautifully over the next decade or more. One to note: Abounding tropical fruit flavours and a wonderfully crisp acidity are highlights of an Estate Series 2014 Sauvignon Blanc from boutique Shottesbrooke Vineyards in the Adelaide Hills. Winemaker Hamish Maguire also used fruit from McLaren Vale in this lip-smacker drop that’s got everything in it from those tropical fruits to a grassiness, suggestions of lemon citrus and a refreshing mouth-feel. Sauvignon Blanc and seafood go hand-in-hand.

HOROSCOPES

This week’s stars are busy and frantic, and Bulls are likely to feel somewhat bamboozled when urgent requests come at you from all directions. The weekend New Moon encourages you to be ‘selfish’ as you retreat into your own private world and make room for rest, relaxation and recuperation.

GEMINI

MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

Are you surrounded by positive people who encourage your ambitions and share your dreams? The New Moon energises your networking zone so it’s a terrific time to fraternise with new friends; make fortuitous work contacts; join a group, club or organisation; plus re-connect with overseas mates in person or online.

Crabs have a tendency to side-step problems (or just bury your head in the sand). With the assertive Aries New Moon in your career zone (and Saturn in your work zone) there is no substitute for being proactive and working hard, as you power through projects and face challenges head on.

Employee engagement is one of the most influential factors for business productivity. If your employees aren’t focused on their work, then your enterprise can struggle to maintain profitability and you may soon see your business finances falling. Keeping your workers on task can become increasingly difficult as seasons change too. In fact, a recent infographic by startup advisory firm Grasshopper revealed that one in four office workers (25 per cent) admit that their

Boost staff morale and engagement

owner and manager Bank of Queensland anthony.walker@ boq.com.au

productivity drops in the summer months. More than two-thirds of these workers (68 per cent) agree that their work suffers due to a desire to daydream. So, how can you reverse the drop in productivity? Here are some key tips to get you started: Cut Friday short The extreme drop in productivity has been recorded in a number of studies, in-

cluding a recent report from our Kiwi neighbours. Commissioned by Mitre 10 and conducted by Colmar Brunton, the research found the average New Zealand worker shifts into a lower gear by 3.30pm, finishes their work by 4.04pm and completely switches off by 5pm. By adding flexibility to your Friday hours, you can not only improve morale but may even get to extend your own weekend as well! Encourage vacations While letting employees leave may not sound like the best idea for increasing the amount of work done, encouraging workers to take vacations is key to ensuring your business keeps running at full steam. Holidays will leave your staff feeling recharged and motivated. Boost the working environment For some businesses, it is impossible to embrace working outside. If you need your employees to remain indoors during their shifts, the best way to protect engagement and productivity levels is to ensure the interior is a comfortable environment. Consider introducing plants, natural light and air conditioning into the office or store. This will help workers concentrate due to the increased airflow.

JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

With the New Moon and Uranus activating your adventure/travel zone, you’re restless and ready for a challenge so it’s time to introduce an exciting international flavour to the mix. Start planning (and saving) for that European escape, Timbuktu trek or heavenly imalayan holiday ASAP!

VIRGO

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

With Venus visiting your career zone (until May 8) is there more you can do to create harmony and happiness in your place of employment? Or perhaps you could participate in some sort of volunteer work, where you also find new friends and expand your social circle? Tackle weekend challenges.

LIBRA

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

Are you sick and tired of being single? Romantic sparks are set to fly, as the New Moon and Uranus rev up your relationship zone. But the course of true love won’t run smoothly so be prepared for a wild card. If you are attached, don’t depend solely on the love of your partner to validate your self-worth.

SCORPIO

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Serious Scorpios can get stuck in a boring rut but the stars have some surprises for you this week, as your daily routine is shaken, stirred and turned upside down. Use it as an opportunity to reboot, refresh and re-energise. The New Moon lights up your wellbeing zone so it’s a good time to diet, detox or de-stress.

SAGITTARIUS

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

Get set for a big week, as you overdo just about everything. Under the influence of Mars and Jupiter, you’re inclined to be generous and garrulous; enthusiastic and exhausting; restless and reckless; passionate and pushy. You’ll certainly be hard to ignore as you ruffle a few feathers with your impulsive ideas.

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

The week starts slowly, as Saturn pours cold water on a romantic partnership, joint venture or ambitious project. Don’t be deterred! Pay close attention to minor details, as you work through problems in a steady and disciplined manner. Have you got a long list of domestic chores that you’ve been avoiding?

AQUARIUS

Tweed FASHION

Looking fantastic without the effort katherine.tweed@westernweekender.com.au @ktweed_

et’s face it, there are some times that we just don’t feel like making an effort. You get up in the morning and putting on makeup seems like a chore, going through your wardrobe to pick out an outfit is unbearable and matching your shoes to your other accessories... now that’s just too much to handle. I am sure even the most fashionable among us have these days, exhausted from trying so hard to look their best every day that they just don’t have it in them to try again. But sometimes being fashionable is about more than trying hard to look your best or always making sure you are wearing the latest trends – have you ever seen a normal person and just thought, ‘wow they’re looking on-point today’ but they aren’t wearing anything that is particularly of note? This is what I’m talking about and I think it is because these people carry a certain effortlessness that is hard to match. And their effortlessness is not the type that comes from trying really hard to look effortless – who else has tried the ‘effortless beach-waves’ look before, it’s not easy – they actually don’t try hard at all, they just nail it. And because it takes these people little to no effort to look their best every day, they can just keep going and going and going, never having those before mentioned days. Here’s how you can do it too. • Take care of yourself. It might seem obvious but taking care of yourself is one of the simplest ways to get that effortless look. Take care of your skin, eat well, exercise often and drink plenty of water,

make sure your hair is clean and your legs are moisturised and get plenty of sleep. You will automatically wake up looking and feeling your best and with a positive attitude, when would you ever complain about getting up and getting ready? • Pay attention to detail. Things like making sure that your nails are always perfectly manicured (yep, this means no chips in the polish), ensuring that your makeup is blended correctly, your shoes are in perfect condition and that your clothes are ironed makes a world of difference to how people see you, even if they do seem like little things.

STRUTH

Coreen Avenue

Veterinary Clinic

• Stay true to your personal style. If you are trying to follow a trend that just isn’t you, no wonder you aren’t feeling like getting out of your pyjamas. Find the clothes and the trends that you like to wear and you’ll quickly nail that effortless look. I have been writing this column for over three years now and I have loved every bit but I have been offered a position writing content for a fashion website and so, my time writing at the Western Weekender is up. I want to say thank you to my loyal readers, especially those who have offered insightful feedback and have contacted me to have a chat about fashion over the years.

In his continuing search for the more weird, wacky and wondrous in the world of travel, David Ellis says a survey by Sheraton Hotels & Resorts has found that after a long day in the office or while travelling, the majority of people would prefer a glass of good wine to most other things – including even hopping into bed with their partner. The survey that was conducted in the US, Germany, China, Argentina and China found nearly half of those asked – an amazing 48 per cent – said they’d make the wine option #1 as a means of unwinding. As well, 29 per cent said they’d give up their smartphone for a day in return for a top wine at the end of a busy day, 23 per cent their social media account for a week, and while travelling 23 per cent would give up use of their hotel’s spa for that glass of wine, and 12 per cent the gym. And possibly most surprising of all, 23 per cent would give up sex with their partner for a week, in exchange for a glass of premium wine after a long day.

What some people will give up for a glass of good wine may surprise you… The hotel group undertook the survey as part of its premium wine program that takes a regular look into globaltraveller guests’ wine drinking habits, taste preferences, spending etc.

Biggest health/fitness misconception? “No time to train”. If you have a goal that is important enough to you, you will make time for it. Whether that is getting up an extra half an hour earlier to fit in a training session or even just doing a quick 30 minute workout at home.

Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...

Jaz Agliaro

Fill your mind with positivity

David

Stein HEALTH

What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? My number one favourite gym class is POWERHOUR at YMCA (a full hour of exercise that is a mix of high intensity cardio and weights, and individual or team workouts). I cannot get enough of this class. I also really enjoy getting outdoors.

What is your fitness story? I have been lucky enough to grow up living a healthy lifestyle. Both my parents are fit and healthy and have always encouraged an active lifestyle and healthy eating. I became involved in the gym when I was 13-years-old in the YMCA teen gym program and haven’t really looked back since. I now have been working for the YMCA for just over five years in administration, customer service and group fitness, and love being surrounded by incredible and motivated people of all different ages with all different goals.

Everybody, even elite athletes and highly disciplined people, struggle at times to stay motivated. You are much more likely to engage in regular fitness training if you have a goal or an event to aim for. Rather than just turning up to the gym and stumbling on the treadmill like a zombie on autopilot, try one of the following to invigorate your fitness schedule: Fun run, triathlon or a half-marathon. Charity cycle or a mountain bike race. Ocean swim or a paddle race. Conquer a bush walk, climb a mountain, or

train for the Kokoda Track. Do a charity walk with friends. In the book Psychological Foundations of Success, Stephen Kraus explores the three reasons why goal setting (such as a fitness goal) increases performance. Direction: Goals provide direction, and channel focus and effort. Goals are empowering tools and help you make the right decisions. Motivation: Goals stretch

and push you out of your comfort zone, resulting in increased effort and persistence. Identifying the gap between where you are now and where you want to be creates motivation and the desire to close the gap. Strategy refinement: After setting a challenging goal, people think longer and more creatively about how to accomplish it and how to measure progress towards achieving it. Here’s some steps I took off Tim May to help achieve your fitness goal. 1. Do some research and target the event you are training for. 2. Lock it in the diary. Don’t just talk about it, commit. 3. Tell other people. Making yourself accountable to others is one of the best ways to keep you focused and on track, a bit of friendly sledging from your mates when you slacken off always helps. 4. Reverse engineer. Work backwards and calculate exactly what you need to be able to achieve your goal. 5. Join a squad. Training with a group of likeminded people will help you train specifically, and keep you motivated and engaged.

How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’? 1. My training partners Bree and Chrissy Boy! Having someone to meet for each training session makes me get out of bed or off my butt and hit the gym. 2. Always setting new and DIFFERENT goals. I have completed and trained for the city2surf, nutrition challenges, YMCA swimathon, team cross fit competitions, weights programs etc.

Top 3 tips for good health? 1. Drink water. I have a 2.2L water bottle that keeps me accountable for how much water I am drinking daily. 2. Get your food right first. Be prepared for the day/week ahead and enjoy what you’re eating and how it makes your feel. What you eat in private is what you wear in public. 3. Be in an encouraging environment. Surround yourself with people that will lift you up and support the lifestyle you live.

Anything else you want to say? Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you are generally right. Your mind if a powerful thing, it’s when you fill it with positivity, that you will start to see changes.

With Easter just gone, we thought it would be wise to discuss chocolate toxicity in dogs. Chocolate contains cocoa and cocoa contains a compound called theobromine. Theobromine is unfortunately toxic to both dogs and cats. Chocolate toxicity occurs mainly in dogs as they are more inquisitive and they are more likely to eat foreign objects but it can also be seen in other pets.

Nicole

McMillan

How much chocolate is toxic? The concentration of theobromine varies depending on the type of chocolate.

PET HEALTH

Chocolate toxicity in dogs

They generally include excitement, trembling, vomiting, diarrhoea, increase heart rate and tremors. In severe cases, affected animals can even seizure and die. What is the treatment? Unfortunately there is no anti-toxin available for theobromine and treatment is generally supportive. If your dog has eaten chocolate in the previous few hours then your veterinarian can induce vomiting through the use of medications. Medications such as activated charcoal can also be given orally as this binds up any left over toxin. Animals that are already showing symptoms are also usually placed on a drip to help flush the toxin from their body. We hope you all had a wonderful Easter. Please take care with chocolate around the home and keep it out of reach of your pets.

Rev John

Lavender RELIGION

Let’s set the record straight on Jesus

Generally speaking, the darker the chocolate, the higher the concentration of theobromine and hence the more toxic it is. If your dog eats any amount of chocolate, it is important to immediately contact your veterinarian for advice. Practice owner of Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic and the Western Sydney Cat Hospital

What are the signs of chocolate toxicity? The symptoms of a toxicity depend on the amount of chocolate eaten and they can vary in severity.

Quite often at Easter, in response to the claims Christians make about the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, there will be a series of comments from others who say that Jesus never existed or that Christian faith is just like “believing things without reason or without evidence”. It is important to know and understand that the Bible never talks about faith like that. Faith in the Bible always means a personal trust in the God. Faith is always a faith based on facts and eyewitness evidence.

miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples.” In other words, the Apostle John is saying that he, along with the other disciples, saw and experienced everything Jesus did. They were eyewitnesses to Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. They spent time with him, talked and walked with him. They saw him live. They saw him die. And the disciples saw Jesus rise from death to give new life to anyone who would believe and trust in him. Christian faith is true and reasonable. It is based on evidence and facts, not just guess work or dreams or blind hope. The good news of the Christian message is that Jesus is real, alive and giving real life to anyone who would put their faith and hope in him.

Consider for example the Apostle John’s account of Jesus’ life. John writes “Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may live in his name.” Notice what John says? “Jesus did many other

to how important the Australian market is to Hyundai, and how seriously we take our environmental responsibility.” Mr Kim said it was hoped the cars would

become more and more popular as the technology evolved. “Because of the way we build our ix35 Fuel Cells, Hyundai Australia has the ability to order these incredible cars in the same way as we order any new Hyundai cars,” he said. “We hope to work with governments on all levels to make the technology more widespread.” Hyundai has installed Australia’s only fuel cell vehicle Hydrogen Refuelling Station (HRS) at its headquarters in Macquarie Park, currently using hydrogen provided by gas partner Coregas Australia, but soon to be creating its own hydrogen onsite through the use of an electrolyser and harnessing solar power. The HRS, supplied by American company Air Products, is now fully operational. But while investment overseas will see hundreds of HRS’s built throughout Europe and North America in the next five years, there are currently no plans for similar infrastructure in Australia according to Mr Kim. “We see no reason why Australians should not enjoy the same environmental solutions as consumers in other markets,” Mr Kim said.

he Federal Industry and Science Minister, Ian Macfarlane, has unveiled Australia’s first hydrogen powered car, the Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell. Mr Macfarlane also officially opened Australia’s only hydrogen vehicle refuelling station and welcomed the commitment Hyundai Motor Company Australia is making to bring such leading edge green technology to Australian motorists. The Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell, hydrogenpowered, zero-emissions Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV), built in Ulsan, South Korea, arrived in Australia in June 2014. It is the first hydrogen-powered car to be permanently based in Australia and it has been undergoing operational trials in the lead up to the recent announcement. The arrival of the first test vehicle and the commissioning of Australia’s only hydrogen refuelling station are pioneering steps toward the commercial availability of emissions-free hydrogen powered vehicles in Australia. “We are taking a bold step into the future and we hope other Australians become as inspired and excited by this technology as we are,” Hyundai Motor Company Australia CEO, Charlie Kim said. “In February 2013, Hyundai Motor Company became the first automobile

fter not winning a title for more than a decade, the Penrith Cricket Club have now gone back-toback after their Fourth Grade side defeated Sydney in a Grand Final thriller last weekend. Featuring players from the premiershipwinning Fifth Grade side from the previous season, Penrith’s Fourth Grade team pulled out a monumental effort to defeat Sydney in a rain-affected two day match. After Saturday’s play was called off due to torrential rain at Drummoyne Oval, Penrith and Sydney were finally able to

A

get their Grand Final underway on Sunday morning. Due to the weather the previous day, match officials were forced to reduce the decider to 104 overs with Sydney winning the toss and choosing to bat first. Speaking with the Weekender, Penrith wicket keeper Tyran Liddiard described the incredible chain of events his side had to endure to eventually come out on top. “Sydney have been unbelievable all year and haven’t been bowled out, to my knowledge, so we were hoping to do our best and give it our all,” the 17-year-old said. “We took a few early wickets and then Sydney built a bit of a partnership before

we started to get wickets again. We got them to 8/99 before they started heating up once more. “Our captain, Glenn Venables, was bowling at the time and ended up splitting the webbing on his hand and had to be rushed to hospital mid-game.” With their captain missing for an undetermined period of time, Penrith were forced to send in their 12th man Nathan Maskell to help with the fielding. Excellent bowling from Ed Brown and Taran Finemore saw Sydney bowled for 151 runs after 71.5 overs. With Penrith needing 152 runs off the day’s remaining 32 overs for victory, they were well and truly under the pump,

especially with their captain nowhere to be seen. “Our captain still wasn’t back but we were holding our own and were in a great position,” Liddiard said. “After losing a few wickets, I was next in to bat. As I was sitting there, shaking like a leaf with nerves, I see our captain running through the car park ready to play again.” Fortunately for Penrith they didn’t need any more batters as Peter Gregersen and Ed Brown reached Sydney’s target to take out the 2014/15 premiership with just seven balls remaining. “It’s the best feeling of my life to win two in a row, especially under those circumstances,” Liddiard said.

Coach demands better team effort Emus slump to another huge defeat as Tu’ipulotu searches for answers to save his season NATHAN TAYLOR

@natetaylor87

enrith Emus coach Sateki Tu’ipulotu has lashed out at his players for not playing as a team during his side’s 66-5 loss to Southern Districts last Saturday at Nepean Rugby Park. Speaking with the Weekender, Tu’ipulotu said his new side are finding it hard to adjust to the Shute Shield level, and playing as individuals isn’t helping their cause. “They didn’t play as a team, they played as individuals,” he admitted. “There were about two or three standouts but I can’t have three players doing the work every week, I need to have the whole team. “The thing that probably let me down the most was my set pieces, which is your bread and butter, and just basic errors.” For the second straight week Tu’ipulotu criticised his side for, once again, not following the game plan given to them. “The game plan was executed in and out… they didn’t implement it for a long period of time, they implemented it in stages but it wasn’t good enough,” he said. Seeing his side get belted every week does takes it toll on the former Tongan

P

Penrith Emus were hammed by Southern Districts last week. Photo: Nardia Sly international but Tu’ipulotu said he has to remain calm and positive when around his players. “As a head coach I don’t have all the answers but I’ve got to grind away,” he said. “If I fall to pieces or the wheels come

off then we’ll become a wreck. I’ve got to keep positive and optimistic.” This Saturday the Emus will travel to the beautiful North Sydney Oval to take on the fourth-placed Northern Suburbs. Tu’ipulotu revealed it was back to basics training at practice this week.

“I think a lot of my players take Shute Shield rugby for granted, it’s actually a very good level. A lot of my guys thought it would be a walk in the park,” he said. “We can’t worry about winning, we just have to grind away. If we win the game at the end, it’s a bonus.”

AFL Giants enjoy winning start with victory over St Kilda NATHAN TAYLOR

@natetaylor87

reater Western Sydney have got their 2015 AFL campaign off to the best start possible following a thrilling nine point win over St Kilda on Easter Sunday. Playing in front of 18,000 fans at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium, the Giants led the Saints at every change during the match, with the final quarter going right down to the wire. Down 26 points late in the third, the Saints mounted a late charge with three consecutive goals that moved them within eight points during the fourth. However the Giants, with a bit of luck and some great play by Jeremy Cameron (four goals) managed to hold off the home side to secure their first win of the season. Speaking after the 87-78 victory, Giants coach Leon Cameron said opening round fixtures are always a challenge. “Round 1’s are always hard to win,” he said. “We had such a long pre-season, there’s a lot of energy and nervousness built up to these sort of games and it’s good to get one away early.” Cameron, who’s now in his second season as head coach of the Giants,

G

credited St Kilda for their ‘never say die’ attitude. “St Kilda are a tough opposition; we knew that there would be some emotion throughout the game and it went right down to the wire,” he said. Cameron also praised his own players for sticking to the task at hand where, in other years, they would’ve dropped their bundle. “Probably this time last year we would’ve lost those close games, so that was pleasing that we found a way to win even though it wasn’t the greatest style of footy, especially in the last quarter for us. But we found a way to win the game,” he said. However, the clash wasn’t without its fair share of controversy after inspirational St Kilda skipper Nick Riewoldt left the field in the final term with neck whiplash that landed him in hospital. An unsuspecting Riewoldt was hit from behind by 22-year-old Giants defender Tomas Bugg, who was celebrating his 50th game for the club, midway through the fourth quarter. The Giants will look to continue their good start to the year when they take on the Melbourne Demons at Spotless Stadium this Saturday afternoon. The Demons also won in round one.

Giants defender Tomas Bugg was in the thick of it during his milestone game

Ante Covic We control our own destiny in ACL

FOOTBALL

It was a thoroughly enjoyable game against FC Seoul on Tuesday night. While you didn’t get the win, no doubt you’re pleased to still be in the hunt for the Round of 16? For sure. We said it before the game that a win was what we were going for and what would’ve gave us a boost to get into the Round of 16, but we also knew we needed a result and a draw doesn’t rule anything out. However, it does throw a spanner in the works and this group that we’re in will be very interesting to watch over the next two weeks. Our fate is in our hands at the moment and we need to win to ensure our future in this competition. We don’t want to have to rely on other results to move through. Your save in the dying moments was unbelievable and was certainly a match saver, take me through it? It’s nice that you’ve mentioned it was a good save, everyone seems to be jumping to the controversy straight away. It was one of those saves that took me by surprise because of the way the ball came back in and the FC Seoul player took a snap

shot at it. But I managed to turn and get a good hand to it but the spin of the bounce saw the ball headed back to the goal and it was another one of those slow motion moments that everyone saw in the AFC Champions League final last year, where you scramble and try and get control of the ball as much as you possibly can. Many are saying it was a clear goal, do you think you got away with one there? I’ve seen the replay numerous times and I suppose, on some of those camera angles, when you freeze frame it at that exact moment, the ball looks like it does cross the line. Is it a guarantee that it did? I’d still like to question that because there’s nothing directly in line with the line. In a situation like that, I have covered the ball quite well. At the time I knew it was close but I believed I did enough. At the end of the day you’re relying on a linesman who obviously wouldn’t have seen the ball and the referee who was quite far away to make a call. I think at the end of it, I made a very important save that kept the scores level at 1-1.

Bowls Mick Gilfoyle It was amazing that any club got any bowls in last weekend with all the rain however Penrith successfully ran two pairs events. Results of Good Friday Men’s Pairs: Winners were John Williamson and Mark Riddell 3 wins +24, runners up Gary Adnum and Carl Healey 3 wins +22 and third was Glen Perrin and Arron Severs 3 wins +14. Results of Easter Sun/Mon Open Pairs: Winners were Shane Clarke and Michael Clarke 5 wins +63, runners up Ron Pitta-

way and Carl Healey 5 wins +39 and third was Lisa Mitchell and Stan Mitchell 41/2 wins +27. Bowls NSW is seeking two Host Clubs for 2015 for the following events. 2015 Rookies State Finals Friday 16, Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October 2015 evening training session and 2015 Champion of Club Champions State Finals. Expressions of Interest are invited to host the following 2015 Bowls NSW State Finals series. Have a good weekend on the green.

Wanderers go global Western Sydney Wanderers officials have been checking out clubs around the world as they continue to build the A-League club into a powerhouse. “Over the past two weeks our Chairman Paul Lederer and I have embarked on a comprehensive visit to some of world football’s top clubs; clubs synonymous with success, ingenuity and changing the face of football both on and off the pitch,” Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas said in a letter to fans last week. “A focus on training facilities, player amenities, academy structures, commercial operations and what it means to be an internationally renowned football club were the core elements of our venture. “Over the course of 12 days we visited many clubs in Spain, Germany, England and the Netherlands and learned,

listened and discussed with clubs including Borussia Dortmund, Borrusia Mönchengladbach, Reading, Brighton and Hove Albion, Arsenal, Manchester United, Feyenoord, Ajax, AZ Alkmaar, Utrecht, Barcelona and Real Madrid.” The trip was an opportunity to see the various models at play, best practice models at clubs where only the best is accepted and arguably where modern football was born and nurtured. “This was a best practice expedition, one with learnings that will drive our football club into an even brighter future; one that will continue the building process that will make the Western Sydney Wanderers the strongest football club in Australia,” Mr Tsatsimas said. “This is by no means an arrogant statement, this is a statement of intent that we have embarked on together.”

Every time something like this happens, the goal-line technology debate is always brought up. Are you a fan of goal-line technology? It’s not really my call for the A-League to bring it in but I understand the benefits of it. If there’s a system that can be implemented without controversy and in a way that doesn’t affect the way the game’s played – you don’t want an NRL situation where the game is put on pause, you want to keep the game flowing – then it should be looked at. The Wanderers play Central Coast on Saturday who were hammered by Brisbane 6-1 last week. Do you expect the Mariners to come out firing after that? We expect a tough game from anyone. The Mariners copped a hiding on the weekend and they definitely won’t want to have a performance like that again. Having said that, when you cop something like that your confidence can be dented as well. We need to take advantage of that. But like I always say, we’ve got to play our own game because when we do we’re good enough to beat anybody; we

Ante Covic just haven’t played a full 90 minutes all year. There’s only five points between us and Central Coast and that’s more than enough motivation for us to inch closer to the Mariners with a win and three games remaining. We can’t make the top six but we can affect where we finish as well.

FOOTBALL

FOX SPORTS is the only place to watch every game of the AFC Asian Cup LIVE with comprehensive pre and post-match coverage

Sport is not always about business ast weekend should have been about excitement tinged with trepidation. My team, Newcastle United of England, were playing in the Tyne-Wear Derby against Sunderland. The two clubs represent towns eight miles apart, a million miles apart in terms of football worship. It is a rivalry that hatred has entrenched itself in, a dangerous edge lines the emotive forces inside the stadium, and outside on occasions, as a horse punched in the face by an enraged Newcastle fan found out a couple of years ago. We’re not all like that, promise. And certainly not now. You see last weekend, in the final days of the Derby lead up, general apathy was the overriding mood amongst Newcastle fans. Many, like myself, couldn’t be bothered waiting up for the 1am kickoff on Sunday night. That’s not because we have no hope of winning anything this season. We just seem to have no hope. The difference is massive. The majority of clubs around the world

L

rarely win trophies. There are only so many to go around. There are two, maybe three clubs that won’t sell their very best players. Those very best are always ripe for the picking by a bigger fish in the vast ocean of football, with Barcelona, Real Madrid and maybe a Bayern Munich or a Chelsea at the top of the food chain. Newcastle fans can accept all of that. But it’s the manner in which we can’t get success, or the process in which our best players move elsewhere that is so galling. To the owner, Mike Ashley, success is a 10th place finish in the Premier League, protecting a steady stream of income from the riches of English football TV rights. He buys players cheaply, if they turn into stars he sells for a tidy profit. Cup competitions are treated like practice matches – the priority is to protect the Premier league position. Could go into more details here, but wouldn’t do it justice compared to David Conn of the UK Guardian, who last week wrote an epic account of how Ashley has coldly turned Newcastle into nothing more glamorous than one of his sporting goods shops.

Mowbray Park Farm

Google the article, read it, and hope like hell it doesn’t happen to your club, if it hasn’t already. Hope has gone, my passion for Newcastle now lies dormant. As stale as one of those decades-old marriages you hear about with couples sleeping in separate single beds. Not even a Derby can stoke the fire. Sunderland won the game, 1-0. Instead of anger, or the shame of losing five straight games to our big rivals, the first thought I had was… ‘I hope we get relegated’. Other Newcastle fans don’t share the same thought, and fair enough, but the way I see it, at least if we get relegated, we’ll try and win something next season. Realistically, only one thing will bring the burn back, that nervous excitement before a big game. Mike Ashley sells up. But the billionaire businessman is a smart human being, and oblivious to criticism. He doesn’t care, as long as he’s making money. He’s running his club, our club, as a stable, profit making business. Which, for a football club which thrives on hope however unrealistic, is the dumbest thing anyone can do.

NSW Waratahs stars put local youngsters through their paces at coaching clinic @natetaylor87

round 100 local kids visited St Marys Leagues Club on Wednesday morning to take part in a junior rugby clinic with players from the NSW Waratahs. Boys and girls aged between six and 14-years-old took part in skills and drills with current Wallabies and Waratahs players including Sekope Kepu, Will Skelton, Paddy Ryan and Jono Lance. Chris McKenzie, Manager of Macquarie Sports who hosted the event, said Penrith was the first of five stops for the clinic this year. “A lot of the kids here today don’t have any affiliation with a rugby club but come with league and even touch football backgrounds. All kids leave today with a football, kicking tee and autographs,” he said. Mr McKenzie added that the clinics were not only beneficial for children’s health and fitness but also to expose them to well known players in the hope that they too will go on to become Australian sporting stars. “A lot of these players 15 years ago were in these kids’ shoes and have gone on to achieve very high sporting honours,” he said.
