Labor reveals team for upcoming Council poll
Labor has announced a mix of political veterans and newcomers as candidates for the upcoming Local Government Election in Penrith.
Locals will go to the polls on Saturday, September 14 and Labor gathered its candidates and supporters at Weir Reserve last weekend to officially kick off campaigning.
Across the three Wards of Penrith all candidates drove home a similar theme: ‘Working for the West’.
In East Ward, current Penrith Mayor Todd Carney will lead Labor’s ticket with Garion Thain, son of long-serving Penrith Councillor John Thain, serving as his second. The ticket will be rounded out with Sabbie Kaur, Brenden Brown and Libby Austin.
Carney said he looks forward to continuing to serve his community.
“I have had the great honour of serving the people of Penrith over the past eight years as an East Ward Councillor and the past 12 months as Mayor,” he said.
“A lot has happened, but there is still more to do. As part of the Labor team, I look forward to continuing to deliver greater housing options, jobs, critical infrastructure and community facilities for future generations.
“Delivering the much-needed upgrades
and improvements to roads, footpaths, rural drainage and community facilities through a financially sustainable program.”
South Ward will be represented by newcomer Hollie McLean, who sits in the first spot on the ticket with Kirstie Boerst as her second. Lorraine Fordham, Mohinder Singh and Mitchell Hearne will round out the South Ward ticket.
McLean said she was thrilled to represent her local area in the election.
“This term of [Council] will see extensive change to our area with the opening of the new airport in 2026,” she said.
“As a South Ward representative, I will work to contribute to decisions that benefit all residents and those who work in and visit our area.
“I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to run for Labor representation for South Ward on Penrith City Council.
“I am excited to bring my passion, energy and extensive advocacy experience to the Council.
“I am looking forward to spending the next four years working for the west.”
North Ward’s top candidate is long-time Penrith City Councillor and former Mayor John Thain, who will have current Councillor Robin Cook as his second. On the remainder of the North Ward ticket is Kyra Quinlivan, Brad Hulls and Laine Fox.
Outgoing Councillor and current State Member for Penrith Karen McKeown attended the launch, where she said she was proud of the future of the Labor Party in Penrith.
“I have always strongly advocated for the people of Penrith, and I am happy to endorse the Penrith Council Labor ticket,” McKeown said.
“These Labor candidates represent locals from all over our community, I know that their passion and dedication will revitalise our Council for the challenges ahead.
“I have worked with many of the candidates both on Council and in the community and I can attest to their commitment to working for you.”
Deputy Premier of NSW and former Penrith City Councillor Prue Car attended the launch event where she endorsed the candidates for the election ahead.
“The Penrith City Labor team has a proven track record of delivering for local residents, and their unmatched experience and knowledge is what the community deserves,” Car said.
“I strongly support all the candidates, their dedication to fight for a brighter future, and unwavering commitment to ‘Working for the West’.”
The Local GovernmentElection will be held on Saturday, September 14.
Plan for Colyton site
Colyton is set to receive a retail boost after Penrith City Council approved a Development Application (DA) for a mixed-use construction in the area last month.
The new development is situated at 30 Day Street in Colyton and will see both retail spaces and a child care centre realised.
“The development seeks Council consent to a two storey building that provides nine separate tenancies at the ground level and a child care centre (90 children) at the first floor level,” the Statement of Environmental Effects (SEE) attached to the DA said.
A two level basement car park will
also be built to cater for the new development.
The existing single story building on the premises, a small grocer, will be demolished to pave way for the new construction.
The proposed child care centre will cater for children under five years of age.
“[The child care centre] also includes a foyer, lift well, cot rooms, toilet and nappy change spaces, kitchen, laundry meeting, office and staff rooms,” the SEE said.
“Outdoor areas and spaces include… outdoor learning spaces, covered verandah area, large sandpit with shade cloth cover, playground and picnic area.”
An acoustic report was conducted to assess the impact of the implementation of a child care centre in
the community which noted that children are limited to four hours of outside play.
“Since the time in which children are involved in outdoor play can be limited, the potential impact associated with these noise emissions reduces,” the Acoustic Report attached to the DA said.
The child care centre is planned to operate Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm with no staff or deliveries to arrive before 6.45am each day.
The proposed basement car park will provide over 70 car parking spaces to be shared between the nine retail premises and the child care centre.
“That vehicles entry then provides access to two basement levels of car parking that provides a total of 72

car parking spaces in the basement levels,” the SEE said.
“This includes a total of five accessible car parking spaces.
“The parking spaces are to be allocated to each land uses as follows: Retail – 41 [and] Child Care Centre – 31.”
The development is overall considered to be a positive addition to the Colyton community, according to the developer.
“The proposal is considered to
have only positive impacts on the local economy and viability of the neighbourhood centre through the creation of additional on-site customers that will also improve safety of the centre through passive surveillance,” the SEE said.
“The development will also create new local employment opportunities during the construction stage of the development.”
Council has now given the project the green light.

Just imagine the Fox family dinner table at Christmas this year.
An opportunity to breathe out and soak in what they achieved in the last 12 months.
No matter what is on the table, it couldn’t taste better than three Gold medals.
And no matter what Christmas movie follows during the traditional afternoon slumber, it couldn’t have a better storyline than what the Fox family produced in 2024.
This Olympics, destined to be remembered by feats in the pool, will instead go down in history thanks to water of a different and more ferocious kind.
What Jessica and Noemie Fox have delivered in this past fortnight will forever be part of Australian sporting history.
And to top it all off, they are absolute gold standard people. Pardon the pun.
We watch sports like rugby league and AFL every week, with players often struggling to string a sentence together between giving credit to the boys and confirming that it is indeed a game of two halves.
Both codes have to write in specific rules about talking to the media because if they didn’t, players and coaches would prefer not to and would skip such commitments.
When the National Anthem is played before big matches like State of Origin or the Grand Final, only a couple of players open their lips. The rest are stony faced, looking like they’d rather be anywhere else in the world.
But watching Jess, Noemie and their parents speak before and after events during the Olympics has been refreshing and makes you full of pride.
They speak with such clarity, such professionalism, such passion. There is no slip-ups, no just going through the motions.
The tears in their eyes as that anthem plays and the Australian flag is raised following their Gold medal efforts is so special.
What Jess achieved last week was incredible. Gold Medals in both the C1 and K1, confirming her status as the greatest paddler the world has seen.
For Noemie to step out of her older sister’s shadow and claim Gold in the Kayak Cross on Tuesday morning was just magic.
“Jess and Noemie will be an inspiration to countless girls back in Australia, and from Penrith”
The emotion as Jess and the girls’ coach and mother Myriam jumped into the water to celebrate was something you could watch over and over again and never get tired of.
Actually, let’s drop the word coach. For that moment, Myriam was just a proud Mum.
That much was obvious.
Richard Fox, who outside of his work in the sporting world is the President of the Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce, was a little calmer, such is his nature.
In fact, the measured Richard you see on your television screens is exactly what he is like every day. How he stays that calm, especially in commentary, I will never know.
This Fox story, and the fact that it happened in Penrith, is full of sliding doors moments.
There was some debate over whether the Penrith Whitewater Stadium would even be built ahead of the 2000 Olympics.
As the story goes, there was a push for Penrith to build a velodrome and host the cycling instead.
In fact, Penrith City Council and Panthers even put together a submission to the Olympic Coordination Authority to get the cycling venue across the line.
But when canoe slalom was a confirmed starter in the 2000 Games, the focus turned to a whitewater venue.
The $6 million investment included $3
million from the State Government, $1.5 million from Penrith City Council and $1.5 million from the International Canoe Federation.
What a return on investment.
It was enough to bring the Fox family to Sydney, and the rest is history.
Jessica was just six-years-old when the Olympics were held in Sydney. Noemie was only three.
24 years on, and that venue – their base –has produced two Olympic champions.
There are countless stories around the world about Olympic venues becoming wastelands once the Games have come and gone.
And while the Whitewater Stadium has had its fair share of issues over the years, the fact that it has stood the test of time and is producing champion athletes is something we should be proud of.
Now, the focus will turn to how we honour the Fox sisters.
Surely there needs to be a parade down the main street of Penrith, perhaps finishing at the Whitewater Stadium, upon their return. Some have suggested, should the calendars align, an appearance at a Panthers home game before the end of the year.
There is no question that we’ll need to come up with some sort of statue that honours the efforts of Jessica and Noemie at these Games on a more permanent basis.
In the future, renaming the Whitewater Stadium in honour of Jess, once her glittering career has come to a close, is surely a certainty.
For now though, we get to sit back and bask in the glory of these two wonderfully gifted athletes, and the two parents that raised them to be incredible young women.
The word hero is tossed around a lot in the sporting world, probably a little too much.
But there is no question that Jess and Noemie will be an inspiration to countless girls back in Australia, and from Penrith. Proof that no matter where you are from in the world, no matter what may stand in front of you, hard work and determination can get you anywhere.
Loss of legendary figure
Tributes as Penrith business icon Barney Allam passes away after short illness
The Penrith community is mourning the loss of one of its most legendary business leaders, Barney Allam.
The Managing Director of Allam Property Group, which he started in 1991, passed away last Sunday.
His sudden passing after a brief illness has rocked the business community, including the corporate partners of the Penrith Panthers, a club close to the lovable business icon’s heart.
“You wouldn’t find a better sponsor or a kinder person in your life,” Panthers Group CEO Brian Fletcher told the Weekender “He had a wonderful association with Greg Alexander and John Farragher and I was only having dinner with him about three weeks ago. He helped so many people. He was a wonderful person and a wonderful contributor to Panthers. There’s just so many people affected by it.”
Allam Property Group is a major partner of the Panthers and has naming rights to the Chairman’s Lounge at Penrith Stadium.
Barney Allam built Allam Property Group into a leader in residential property development, delivering over 7000 properties since its inception. The company has completed over 40 residential estates in New South Wales and Queensland. But he will be remembered as much for his generosity as his business success. He was a regular contributor to community organisations and charities, and was honoured with an OAM in 2004.
Lou Zivanovic, who shared a passion for the Penrith Panthers with Barney, said it was a tremendous loss.
“Barney meant a lot of things to a lot of people, to me he was inspirational in the Panthers community, the Penrith community, the business community and in life, simply legendary,” he said.
Former State Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said the city had lost “one of its finest”.
“A great character who built an amazing business creating places people call home,” Ayres said.
“He absolutely loved our region and his passion for its success poured out of him.”
Long-time business operator
Graham Chapman paid tribute to someone he called an “inspiration”.
“His untimely death has shocked our entire community,” he said.
“I was looking back on messages from Barney and I will never forget his positive texts he sent me during COVID when the tourism industry was on its knees. He had this ability to make people feel special and that’s a gift.”
Allam Property Group released a statement on Tuesday, saying Barney’s loss would leave a “profound void” and that he would “never be forgotten”.
LAW and ORDER
Police Snapshot Legal Matters
St Marys: Officer injured as chase escalates through local suburbs
A man and woman have been charged after leading police on a chase through the suburbs of Penrith.
At about 11.30pm on Friday, August 2 police were patrolling in St Marys when they attempted to pull over a vehicle on Mamre Road for the purpose of a random breath test. The vehicle failed to stop for police and a pursuit was initiated.
The vehicle reached speeds of no less than 120km/h and continued to drive through the suburbs of St Marys, Werrington and Kingswood.
While in Kingswood the vehicle slowed down and a female passenger exited the vehicle, fled on foot and was chased by police.
Once police caught up with the woman, she began to violently resist arrest and caused injury to a female police officer before being restrained.
The pursuit of the vehicle had continued in the meantime and the vehicle pulled into a service station and the male driver exited where he then surrendered to police.
Both parties were arrested and conveyed to Penrith Police Station to be charged.
The 38-year-old male from Roselands was charged with 16 offences and is due to appear in Hornsby Local Court on Wednesday, August 14.
The 29-year-old Mona Vale female was charged with 14 offences and is next due to appear before Hornsby Local court on Wednesday, August 14.
Kingswood: Woman arrested after police witness drug deal
Police have arrested a woman after watching a drug deal take place.
At about 8.00pm on Saturday, August 3 as police were patrolling the Kingswood area, they observed what was suspected to be a drug-related transaction occurring in a vehicle.
Police followed the vehicle into the driveway of an address in Kingswood and approached the driver.
During a search of the driver and the vehicle police located cannabis leaf and methylamphetamines, two sets of digital scales, a weight kit and over 300 clear resealable bags.
Subsequently, a 49-year-old Penrith female was arrested and charged.
She appeared in Penrith local court on Tuesday, August 6.
Penrith: Man arrested after police pursuit
An elderly man has been charged after failing to stop for police.
At about 10.20pm on Sunday, August 4 police were patrolling on Coreen Avenue, Penrith where they attempted to pull over a black Holden sedan.
The vehicle sped away from police and a pursuit was initiated.
The driver made multiple reckless driving manoeuvres during the pursuit before attempting to dump the vehicle in Werrington County and flee on foot.
Police stopped the male driver a short distance away and he was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station.
The 65-year-old Werrington male was charged, and bail refused. He will appear in Penrith Local Court on Thursday, September 19.
Penrith: Man arrested after Firearms Prohibition Order search
A man has been arrested after police found drugs during firearm search.
On Friday, August 2 police attended an address in South Penrith to conduct a Firearms Prohibition Order search.
Shortly after commencing the search of the premises, police located a large number of varying drugs and restricted substances. Subsequently, police suspended the search whilst applying for a search warrant which was granted. During the completion of the search police located several more restricted substances.
Later the same day, a 52-year-old South Penrith male was arrested at Penrith Police Station and charged.
He is due to appear before Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, August 13.
Blue Mountains: Missing teen may be in Penrith area
Police are appealing for public assistance to locate a teenage boy missing from the Blue Mountains area.
William Boller, aged 14, was last seen on Kent Street, Bullaburra, about 3pm Tuesday.
William is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 160cm tall, of slim build, with brown hair and brown eyes.
He was last seen wearing a grey Nike fleece tracksuit, white Nike Air Force sneakers with a distinctive black tick.
William is known to utilise public transport and frequents the Penrith area.
Often, we like to revisit things that we have written about previously in this column, usually themes that come up in our practice all the time and might be of some assistance to our readers.
One of the most common questions we get is “Do I have to see a Solicitor to write a Will, or can I write it myself or with a Will Kit?”
The answer to that question is that it is not compulsory to have your Will written by a Lawyer and yes you can either write it yourself or use one of many different forms of Will Kits that are available in the marketplace.
This is consistent with most if not all of the Law in New South Wales that says that no person has to be legally represented by a Lawyer in any legal matter if they don’t wish to do so. In the same way that a person can represent themselves in Court proceedings, private citizens are entitled to act for themselves in relation to most, if not all legal matters generally including the making of a Will.
The challenge for Will makers to consider is that a Will is a legal document that has certain technical requirements under the Succession Act 2006 (NSW) so if you are going to write your own Will or try to navigate a Will Kit you need to have confidence that you understand both technical requirements to ensure that your Will is valid.
Generally speaking, a Will needs to meet the following three conditions to be a valid Will pursuant to the legislation:
1. It must be in writing (typed/printed or handwritten is fine);
2. It must be signed by the Will maker; and
3. The Will maker’s signature must be witnessed by two other people who also need to sign the Will.
In addition to the basic validity requirements, there are also other important matters that will be addressed in a Will that is properly prepared by an appropriately qualified lawyer.
This includes the appointment of an Executor or Executors to deal with matters relating to your estate after your death including gathering and distributing your assets in accordance with your Will or defending any action, for example a family provision claim (contesting a Will) against the estate.
An appropriately drafted Will can also deal with things like specific gifts. For example, if you always wanted your mother’s jewellery to go to your first born daughter and your grandfather’s war medals to go to your only son, then these matters need to be addressed specifically in your Will which also then needs to set out what you wish to happen to the rest of your assets (known as the residue of your estate).
Your Will can also dictate what is to happen to a beneficiary share of your estate if they die before you.
For example, quite often people will want to leave their estate to their children. If, however a Will maker’s child dies before them, the Will maker can nominate what is to happen to their deceased’s child’s share. For example, the Will maker may wish for the deceased’s child’s share to pass to their children (being the Will maker’s grandchildren) or might prefer for the deceased’s child’s share to simply be cancelled out and the estate to be divided amongst the surviving children of the Will maker.
There are a range of other matters that can be addressed in your Will. As you can see, it can get quite complex and technical even if you think you have a reasonably straight forward situation. The challenge with writing your own Will or using a Will Kit is that you might inadvertently fail to meet one of the validity requirements or might make a mistake that results in your estate not being distributed in the way that you wanted it to be. If you are thinking of making a Will and want some expert advice, please get in touch with us.

Council run sparked by lack of action on rural drainage issues
Alocal resident is so fed up with the lack of Council action toward drainage issues in her community that she is taking things into her own hands.
Amanda Cardwell lives in Cranebrook and has experienced extensive drainage and flooding issues on her property for years.
Cardwell attended the Penrith City Council meeting last month where a motion to deliver $7.1 million from the sale of the Emu Plains Industrial (Rocla) Project toward fixing the North Ward drainage issues as identified by an audit report was voted down.
Cardwell’s property has the run-off from other northern developments flowing through her land, which is causing major damage.
“The drainage and flooding issues we are experiencing has reached a point where they are causing significant damage and safety concerns on our property,” Cardwell said.
“The volume of water being channelled through our property far exceeds the natural flow, which has caused significant loss of land and made large portions of our property unusable and unstable.”
The unrestricted water flow through Cardwell’s property has left behind both rubbish and pollutants.
“The uncontrolled stormwater run-off
flowing through our property is not filtered, resulting in the accumulation of pollutants and debris which we allege carries waste and contaminants from upstream areas and scatter across our land and degrades its environmental quality,” Cardwell said.
“The continued approval of developments that drain stormwater onto our property is causing ongoing harm. It appears to be using
Arrest following Kingswood fire
Aman has been charged with a number of offences – accused of starting a fire at a Kingswood house on Tuesday morning.
About 6.55am on Tuesday, August 6, emergency services were called to a home on Orth Street, Kingswood, following reports of a house fire.
Officers attached to Nepean Police Area Command attended and found a home well alight.
Fire & Rescue NSW crews extinguished the blaze.
A 71-year-old man was treated by NSW
Ambulance paramedics at the scene and taken to Nepean Hospital in a critical condition.
Police established a crime scene and have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the blaze.
Following inquiries, a 63-year-old man was arrested nearby at 3.15pm on Tuesday and taken to Nepean hospital for medical treatment.
After being discharged from hospital, the man was taken to Penrith police station where he was charged with three offences – ‘damage property by fire with intent to injure’, ‘damage property by fire’ and ‘reckless grievous bodily harm’. He faced court on Wednesday.
our private land as a solution to mitigate stormwater from developments.”
Cardwell said that hearing similar stories from other residents made her realise how large the issue really is.
“I listened to the heartbreaking stories of residents suffering from persistent drainage and flooding problems,” Cardwell said.
“One particularly moving example was a
family who, after repeatedly replacing their carpet due to flooding, found themselves inundated again on the very day the new carpet was laid.
“I empathise with these community members and understand the impact of these key issues, as I have experienced them firsthand.”
It was both Cardwell’s own experience with flooding and drainage issues and the stories of other community members that compelled her to run as an Independent candidate in the upcoming Local Government Election this September.
“I have decided to run in the local election as an independent candidate in the Penrith North Ward,” Cardwell said.
“I could no longer remain on the sidelines as I witness the severe impact these issues have on our residents, including ourselves.
“It has become clear that the local community is being ignored on crucial matters in our area.
“I am committed to advocating for meaningful change and ensuring that our community’s needs are met with the urgency and attention they deserve.”
Cardwell encourages any residents who have experienced similar issues to reach out to her at www.facebook.com/INDCardwell to share their experiences with flooding and drainage issues.

Easing Mamre mayhem
Work to finally begin on critical road upgrade within weeks as Minns turns sod
Planned upgrades to Mamre Road will begin next month, NSW Premier Chris Minns has confirmed.
Minns was joined by Deputy Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car, Minister for Roads John Graham and Mayor of Penrith Todd Carney to ceremoniously turn the soil at the site of the Access Logistics industrial development on Mamre Road last week.
The State Government has committed a $290 million investment into the Mamre Precinct, and it will see a 3.8km stretch of road between Erskine Park Road and the M4 Motorway widened into a four-lane thoroughfare.
Minns said the upgrades will form an essential aspect of the growth being experienced in western Sydney.
“One of the great things about today’s announcement is it links together a major logistic and transport development, so great jobs for western Sydney with billions of dollars of investment for new infrastructure, particularly roads,” he said.
“If you look at Mamre Road, an investment of $290 million, if you think about this road as a single land road for a long period of time, notwithstanding the fact that right around it there was development and homes and more people moving in, the single lane was in no
way going to cope with the projected growth and infrastructure that we want to build in this part of the state.
“So, the Government is proud, as part of Mamre Road Stage 1, to invest $290 million.”
Carney said that Penrith will continue to grow and needs the infrastructure to support it.
“This just shows you the importance of ventures like this. How we can bring jobs to western Sydney,” he said.
“Penrith Council has always had a vision
of providing housing but also jobs that go with those houses and [it’s important] to us to ensure that this work continues to happen within this corridor.
“Penrith has 37 per cent of the remaining employment lands in the Sydney basin, so it’s important that people come on board [and] come down to Penrith because we are looking for your business.”
Car reflected that the impact of these upgrades on the Penrith community cannot be understated.
“In the west of Sydney, we have experienced exponential growth in the past 10 to 20 years but as we know for those of us that have lived it, it was exponential housing growth without the investment in the necessary infrastructure and employment opportunities for the people that were building homes,” she said.
“Young people need employment opportunities to stay and work and be able to live and recreate and enjoy their own local communities.
“Too many people in western Sydney have to get on toll roads to travel east in order to get employment to pay for their mortgages [and] to feed their families. This is about turning this around; it’s about making sure that we have the infrastructure leading to the employment so we can realise the once in a lifetime opportunity of the WSIA.”
Construction company Seymour White has been selected to deliver the upgrades which will include the construction of two bridgesized culverts to improve drainage, upgraded intersections to improve safety and travel times, and a new shared path for cyclists and pedestrians.
A further $500 million was committed by the State Government in the May Budget to progress Stage 2 of the project between Erskine Park Road and Kerrs Road in Kemps Creek.
Stage 1 works are expected to begin in the coming weeks.
End of an era for Helen and Rob
After almost 50 years in the jewellery industry, Helen and Rob Ely have announced their retirement, with their departure also marking the closure of Pandora Penrith.
Though they both began their careers with York Jewellers, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this month and is being run by their son Douglas, Helen and Rob’s affiliation with Pandora began two decades ago, with just a small display box of charms.
“It was in a beautiful piano finish box on our counter in York Jewellers,” Helen said.
“We weren’t really a big silver store, but it grew and grew and grew.”
What was one box quickly became 20, with the Elys building up a full section of Pandora jewellery inside York Jewellers until 2010, when they launched the concept store at Westfield Penrith.
Helen and Rob said they couldn’t have loved their time with the store more, getting to be involved in the special milestones of so many local people through their jewellery.
“They turn 21, and then some of them get engaged, and then we see them when
they finish at uni, when they get married, or when they’re having babies,” Helen said.
“It’s so lovely to be a part of that.”
Working for the world’s largest jewellery business also provided them with a host of incredible opportunities, particularly given that the Penrith store was consistently one of the most successful in Australasia.
“We’ve travelled overseas with Pandora, we’ve gone to their factory and seen how the product’s made, how good they are with their teams in Europe and at their head office in Copenhagen,” Rob said.
“It’s been a wonderful experience!”
Whilst they’ve now made the tough decision to retire,
Rob and Helen said they certainly have plenty to look forward to.
“We’re really proud. It’s been a long journey, especially with York being 50 years this year. I’ve been in it for 48 years, all the way through from an apprentice!” Rob said.
“It’s the end of an era, but it’s also exciting times ahead. It’s time to enjoy our lives; lots more travel, but family is most important to us, and we’ll be around to support them as much as possible.”
After the store closes under their ownership this Sunday, August 11, Pandora will be taking it back to run it as an owner operated store in the same location, meaning shoppers won’t have to wait long until they can visit once again.
Current plans are that the store could reopen as soon as next weekend, with much of the same staff.
“All the team members, which we’re happy about, are moving on to work with Pandora. Everyone who had a job still has a job, which we’re grateful about,” Rob said.
With Pandora Penrith closing this Sunday, Rob and Helen are hoping to see as many people come in as possible to say goodbye, and shop the sales.
Local school’s slam dunk
New basketball courts officially opened at Cambridge Gardens Public School
Students at Cambridge Gardens Public School have taken the first steps on their new basketball court following the completion of the first stage of upgrades.
Labor committed during its 2023 election campaign to deliver a series of upgrades to the school and the first upgrade has officially been completed.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Education Prue Car was joined by Penrith MP Karen McKeown to ceremoniously cut the ribbon and open the new basketball and netball courts.
Car said the upgrades are a clear indication of the government’s commitment to improved education facilities.
“The newly resurfaced basketball court demonstrates our commitment to providing safe, high-quality facilities for our students,” she said.
“Seeing projects like this one realised shows our determination to provide every child with the opportunity to learn, play and grow in the best possible environment.
“There is more to come for students, as the final stages of the Cambridge Gardens Public School upgrade continues this term with works on the new amenities building already underway.”
With the resurfacing of the courts
done, the upgrades will now focus on the construction of new student restroom facilities where work began during the recent school holidays and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
McKeown shared that she was
thrilled to see the upgrades in a high growth area like Penrith.
“I am proud to be part of a government that prioritises education and is committed to delivering facilities and a learning environment that inspires and supports our students,”
she said.
“It is so rewarding to see school infrastructure being delivered for students and families in fast-growing areas like Penrith.”
To celebrate the new facilities and National Green and Gold Day, students wore their best green and gold outfits to play a few games of basketball and netball.
School Principal Adam Wynn said the students were very excited to make the most of the facilities.
“Our students have been looking forward to the completion of the resurfaced basketball court this term, which has already been a hit amongst our students at lunch time,” he said.
“This upgrade makes our fantastic school an even better place to come and learn, and we look forward to seeing progress on our new amenities building.
“We are grateful for the government’s support and investment in our school, ensuring that our students have access to excellent facilities that promote learning and growth.”
To make sure the new facilities were up to scratch, Car shot a few hoops.
Breaking ground: Building work starts on our newest suburb
Penrith’s newest suburb has marked its first steps in a groundbreaking ceremony.
Despite work already having started, the soil was officially turned on the ground of Orchard Hills North last week to mark the beginning of construction.
Penrith Mayor Todd Carney was joined at the ceremony by land developer Legacy Property’s CEO Matthew Hyder, UDIA CEO Stuart Ayres and Scott Hartog of JK Williams to celebrate the start of the community.
Carney opened his address by sharing how important it is to have high-quality housing being provided.
“It’s great to know we are breaking ground today on a project that will provide future homes in Penrith, and I commend Legacy Property for its vision to bring this future residential community to life,” he said.
“Council’s planned and strategic approach to help facilitate housing supply in our city has seen us succeed the NSW Government’s housing targets for many years.
“I’m pleased that this new development will help continue to deliver housing in our community.”
The site is expected to facilitate the growth of the west that the incoming Western Sydney
International Airport and Aerotropolis are anticipated to bring.
“It’s also great that existing connectivity around this site will be enhanced with continuing road upgrades and future completion of the Orchard Hills Metro Station, just two kilometres away,” Carney said.
“With the Western Sydney International Airport and Aerotropolis opening in just two years, residents will have access to more jobs,
I’M HERE TO HELP YOU
one of our community’s key priorities.”
Hyder shared how excited Legacy Property is to facilitate Penrith’s newest community.
“Orchard Hills North has already received a tremendous amount of interest and achieved significant sales results in only the first few months – a real sign of Penrith’s attraction to the market,” Hyder said.
“This is reflecting the purchasers, the first home buyers [and the] investors to be part
of a high-quality new community that is close to transport, shops, schools and other amenities.
“In their eyes, Orchard Hills North ticks all the proverbial boxes.
“Legacy Property is incredibly committed to the Penrith region, we’ve already delivered 750 lots immediately next door at Caddens Hill, and this is now going to be surpassed by 1500 lots here at Orchard Hills North.”

Celebrating NSW Education
kicking off National Homelessness Week with their Community Support Hub. It was a pleasure to see the services all attend and to discuss the community initiatives available to support homelessness in Penrith.
We’re all feeling “Proud to Belong” as we celebrate NSW public education and the achievements of our schools, teachers, and students during this Public Education Week. It was timely to host Penrith Selective High School students earlier this week, kicking off Education Week with a behindthe-scenes scoop on what life is really like as the Member for Penrith. Thank you to each student for your feedback and sharing your first-hand experiences and insights into our local community.
Know the F.A.S.T. Signs this Stroke Week!
Homelessness Action Now
This National Homelessness Week, let’s raise awareness of homelessness in Australia and the importance of social housing as a long-term solution. Alarmingly, there are over 122,000 Australians experiencing homelessness on any given night. From couch surfing to living in an emergency shelter, homelessness can look different for everyone.
A huge thank you to LinkWentworth for
I encourage the community to know the F.A.S.T. (Face, Arms, Speech and Time) signs of stroke this National Stroke Week 2024. Stroke Foundation recommends the F.A.S.T. test as an easy way to remember the most common signs.
• Face: Has their mouth drooped?
• Arms: Can they lift both arms?
• Speech: Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?
• Time: Call ‘000’ immediately. Knowing these steps can save lives and prevent severe disability.

Viral song gives St Clair local a career kickstart
spending more time on himself and his songwriting skills.
21-year-old Sathyan Ilanko is making waves in the music industry, having gone back to his roots to write a song which now has one of the most viewed videos in the world.
For Ilanko, music is in his blood, inheriting his talents from his parents who, together, performed all over the world.
“My mum and my dad both sing as well. They were in a band in India, where my mum is from, and they used to do shows over there when they were younger, and also continued to do that overseas, like in Australia,” he said.
As a result, he started singing as well, doing local shows, then competitions, until he decided he wanted to pursue it professionally.
“This was definitely always the dream. If you can do what you love as a profession, that’s the dream,” he said.
“I was just always doing it, so I thought, why not make it full-time?”
Ilanko first travelled back to India to make his debut as a playback singer in the Tollywood industry in 2019 at just 16-years-old. But, when COVID hit, he headed home to St Clair, instead
Last year, he made his return to the country, continuing to work on music with other Tamil people all over the world. Through this, he was connected with Sai Abhayannkar, a fellow musician from India.
After showing him some writing of his own, the two decided to collaborate on a song which Ilanko would write, and Abhayannkar would sing and compose called ‘Aasa Kooda’, under the record label Think Music.
Despite knowing that Abhayannkar’s first song was a huge hit, Ilanko said he never predicted the same would happen with ‘Aasa Kooda’.
“The first song was a big hit, so I was kind of nervous, knowing that people were going to compare the two. But, I was just focusing on the fact that it was a completely different song in terms of its musicality,” he said.
“There was no moment where I thought, ‘This will be a hit’.”
However, everything changed when the song, Ilanko’s first as a songwriter, quickly accumulated more than 50 million views on YouTube, and appeared on viral charts everywhere from Canada to the UK and Pakistan.
For Ilanko, this was not only a shock,
but a testament to the talent of the young people involved in the song’s creation.
“We had so many young, fresh talents behind it, so I guess I’m just happy for all the recognition we’re all getting,” he said.
“The female vocalist, Sai Smrit, she’s Sai Abhyankkar’s sister, and she’s my age, 21, and Sai is 19. It’s such a young crew, and for a lot of us it’s our first or second time, so to get such recognition is very, very cool.”
As for what’s next for Ilanko, he’s already got a few big projects in the works, including one with Chennai composer Lydian Nadhaswaram, who appeared on and won ‘The World's Best’ on CBS in 2019 earning him a $1 million prize.
The project will see them transform Thirukkural – The Moral Epic of Tamil – into a series of over 1000 short songs.
“It’s something that I’m very happy about, since it’s something to do with Tamil. It’ll be something that people will look back to,” he said.

Gipps Street Recreation Precinct opening event
The Gipps Street Recreation Precinct is going to change Penrith’s sport and recreation landscape when it opens this month.
The site was formerly Council’s main waste facility until the mid-1980s. Since being decommissioned, it has been earmarked to be converted into a recreation space because of its size and central location in Claremont Meadows.
Following several years of extensive remediation, environmental assessments, and planning, the site was made ready for construction of the new precinct which began in mid-2022.
Council has worked closely with the community to establish a shared vision for the Gipps Street Recreation Precinct. The result is a dynamic facility which will accommodate everyone from families looking for a weekend picnic spot to sports groups for competitions and training. Even our four-legged residents have been catered for!
In response to the community’s feedback, the precinct has been designed to cater to a wide variety of people and ac-
tivities with floodlit sports fields, children’s play areas including water play, skate park, pump track, sports courts, outdoor fitness equipment, dog park, picnic and BBQ facilities, public artwork, pathways, and much more.
Parking and amenities were also a high priority for residents so they can spend more time enjoying the precinct. We’ve made sure there is parking for over 500 cars, including accessible spaces, and toilets are available across the site. The main amenities building features accessible toilets and a Changing Places facility for those with high support requirements. Make sure you mark Saturday, August 31 2024 in your calendar to come along and check out the precinct for the first time. Council will be holding a grand opening from 11am until 3pm, with free entertainment, food, and plenty of fun activities to enjoy. I hope to see you all there! This transformational project would not have been possible without the support of the NSW Government.

Bodies By Bonnie is my home non-surgical body contouring salon, located in Berkshire Park. After having to put a pause with booking in clients due to covid in 2020 - 2021, the last 24 months has been so rewarding with giving clients the results that they are wanting with their body and making them feel better about themselves
Non-Invasive body contouring treatments have gained popularity as effective methods to reduce unwanted fat, tighten skin and improve body contours without the need for surger y. These treatments typically involve less downtime, lower risk, and a quicker return to normal activities compared to surgical procedures

the finalword
When you’re on the hunt for a fourth consecutive Premiership and your competitors are trying to bring you down, you look for that little extra edge. The thing perhaps nobody is expecting.
And more and more I’m convinced that the x-factor for Penrith’s title run this year is Jarome Luai.
The Tigers-bound superstar has been the perfect partner in crime for Nathan Cleary these past few years, but there appears to be more to his game this season.
And it’s part of a plan, too.
Luai has been spending more time at first receiver, especially against the Knights last week. It’s allowing Nathan Cleary more freedom while shaking things up in terms of what the opposition expects.
Cleary will continue to receive the attention and the plaudits, and deservedly so, but it will
be Luai – in my view – who becomes crucial when the Finals arrive in September.
Last week the Panthers were good without being spectacular against a persistent and desperate Knights side. They responded well to the adversity thrown at them and when the game got to 14-all, you just knew that it would be a magic play from Cleary to put Penrith back in front.
It’s almost rinse and repeat at the moment, as the Panthers go through what’s become a usual routine on their final path to September.
This Friday night’s clash against the Eels is the perfect match to really put the foot down and get some confidence, and give newcomers to the team like Casey McLean the chance to really bed down their game ahead of things getting serious.
Parramatta were impressive against the Warriors last Friday night. When Clint Guther-
son and Reagan Campbell-Gillard came down the tunnel laughing and joking to each other, I just had this feeling the Eels were relaxed enough to spring an upset, and that they did. Despite that effort, it’s hard to imagine them getting close to Penrith here. The only danger could be the Panthers having one eye on the mouth-watering showdown with Melbourne next Thursday night, which could well decide the Minor Premiership.
But Ivan Cleary’s side has rarely got ahead of itself these past three or four years, so you imagine they’ll be well prepared for this clash at CommBank Stadium – their home next season.
These clashes aren’t always blowouts of course, and there’s always a bit of extra passion in a clash between two western Sydney rivals. Even earlier this year, the Panthers only got home 26-18 against their closest neighbours – and we know this corresponding clash at
CommBank last year delivered an absolute belter.
But we’re at that point of the season where a team coming second last really struggles to get up for games, especially in back to back weeks. They nab wins along the way, but the lure of the off-season catches them.
It tends to result in blowout scorelines when they come up against a team well in contention for the Finals.
I tipped the Panthers by 30 last week but the Knights surprised me, hanging in far longer than I thought they would (perhaps on the back of a couple of dicey Bunker decisions).
So let’s reload and go with the same prediction, though with a little bit of trepidation – knowing just how much the Eels would love to spring an upset and potentially ruin Penrith’s Minor Premiership chase.
Tip: Panthers by 30.

TOOTH IS, IT WAS ALL WORTH IT
! Different kind of memory: A Sunday afternoon at the footy took an odd twist for one young fan, who was on the wrong end of Sunia Turuva kicking the ball into the crowd in the second half last weekend. The youngster lost a tooth following the impact of the ball into his face. The family took it all in good spirits. Turuva was quick to apologise as soon as he realised what happened, and gave the youngster his boots and a footy post-game as an apology.
! To’o issue settled, for now: The Panthers feel confident that they’ve calmed any issues surrounding winger Brian To’o, who was the subject of much media speculation last weekend. The club was always confident it would sort through any drama once they sat down with To’o and his manager, and that ended up being the case. All parties are on the same page and the issue will quieten down now and won’t act as a distraction ahead of the Finals. But whether it bubbles up again is yet to be seen.
! Not just a sickie: Not many people believed the story that Brian To’o was sick last week when the media converged on Penrith, keen to get answers on his future. But I’m told the winger was legitimately unwell, and wasn’t quite 100 per cent by the time the captain’s run rolled around on Saturday.
! Former CEO’s huge hike: Former Panthers CEO Mick Leary is still in great health. He’s spent the last couple of weeks travelling overseas and hiking in the Swiss Alps with his family. The now 80-year-old played 92 first grade games for the Panthers, before returning as an administrator and serving as CEO.
! Ray’s legacy lives on: Legendary Channel Nine commentator Ray Warren may have been retired since the end of the 2021 season, but his legacy certainly lives on at Penrith Stadium. A chair in the Nine box at the stadium still carries Warren’s name, albeit a little frayed. We assume lead Nine commentator Mat Thompson now sits in the great man’s chair... literally.
Injured fullback Dylan Edwards watching Penrith’s win over Newcastle last Sunday from the coach’s box, while James Fisher-Harris was at the Plaza last Thursday.
! Spotted: What a fall from grace for Taylan May. He’s gone from scoring tries at BlueBet Stadium with a huge career ahead of him to watching the game from beer hill, where he was spotted last Sunday.
! Boss shocked by sponsor’s death: Panthers Group CEO Brian Fletcher was particularly rocked by the passing of long-time Penrith sponsor Barney Allam last weekend. Fletcher has a family connection with Allam and both come from country New South Wales. The pair had only had dinner together a few weeks ago.
! NRL must tread carefully: There’s an obsession from some within the media, particularly at News Corp, for the NRL to expand to 20 teams and introduce a wildcard round at the end of the season, to stop teams resting players in the final round. It’s quite funny because many of the journos pushing for this will be the first to complain about the competition being diluted. The NRL has to be really careful here. The game is flying with sellout crowds, great TV ratings and a solid reputation. Let’s hope further expansion is not what we look back on as the mistake that took all of that away.
reunion: After helping the Panthers to Premiership triumph last year,
was back at BlueBet Stadium last Sunday as the Knights desperately tried to keep their Finals hopes alive. Cogger chatted to some of his former teammates post-game, including 100-gamer Mitch Kenny.
! New podcast: A reminder that the Weekender’s new Tension’s Running High podcast is dropping new episodes every week. Troy Dodds and Nathan Taylor take you through the latest at the Panthers, and will this week pay tribute to long-time sponsor Barney Allam following his passing. Search Western Weekender wherever you listen to podcasts, or head to www.westernweekender.com.au/podcast.
! Panthers now J.J. faves: Melbourne’s shock loss to the Dragons last weekend has forced a major change to the TAB betting markets for the Minor Premiership. Penrith are now favourites to claim the J.J. Giltinan Shield for a third straight season, in to $1.65. The Storm are now out to $2.10. While next Thursday’s clash between the two sides could well decide the Minor Premiership, for and against will also play a part. It’s very close at the moment with Penrith holding a five point advantage. The Storm do have a slightly tougher run home than Penrith.
! Big guests for lunch: Exclusive Penrith business group Olatype will hear from Panthers executives Peter Graham, Matt Camer on and Shane Elford at a special luncheon next Friday. A few of the attendees will be on a strong back-up after the Panthers v Storm clash next Thursday night.
! Spotted: Matt Nable in Penrith on Monday night recording one of his famous Fox Sports promos ahead of the Finals.
EISENHUTH SET TO EXTEND PENRITH STAY
Off-contract Panthers forward Matt Eisenhuth is on the cusp of remaining with the club next year, teasing a possible new deal in the works.
The 31-year-old has played 13 games for the Panthers this season, and 59 overall since arriving at the foot of the Mountains in 2021.
Speaking with Extra Time on Wednesday afternoon, Eisenhuth said he was confident a new contract was imminent.
“Nothing rock solid yet, but it’s in the works and hopefully we can have something positive to announce soon,” he said.
Pressed on whether his future would be at Penrith, Eisenhuth said the defending Premiers was his preference.
“Yeah, that’s what I would like, so we’ll wait and see,” he
Somewhat polarising among the Panthers fan-base, Eisenhuth has enjoyed another strong year contributing to Ivan Cleary’s first grade team on more than a dozen occasions.
With James Fisher-Harris having another stint on the sidelines due to injury, Eisenhuth is expected to continue to stack up the games before season’s end.
“That’s always been the case for me over the years. I manage to string 10+ games throughout the year and, as unfortunate as it is [that teammates get injured],
Finals Series. That’s my mentality.”
Eisenhuth has been named on the bench for Friday night’s Battle of the West against Parramatta at CommBank Stadium.
Penrith took care of the Eels back in Round 2 at BlueBet Stadium but haven’t beaten them at their home ground since way back in 2019. Eisenhuth said it’s going to be an almighty battle even though the two sides sit at opposite ends of the ladder.
“We haven’t had too many good results against the Eels there and we’re looking to change that this week,” he said.
“We’re playing against a Parramatta team that’s sort of struggled a little bit, but we know whenever we play them it’s a different story.
“They always play good against us. That rivalry, that Battle of the West, I know I’m preparing for a tough game this week.” If Penrith do manage to break their five-year hoodoo against the Eels at CommBank Stadium, it sets up for a mouthwatering clash against the top of the table Melbourne Storm the following week. The match could decide who secures the coveted J.J. Giltinan Shield.
“The Minor Premiership is not something we’re thinking about week to week, but it’s being spoken about in the media with the Storm losing last week,” Eisenhuth said.
“For us, we’re not focusing on that. We’ve got a game to play this week.” They have nothing to lose.”
TURUVA “DREADING” PANTHERS EXIT
Every player makes a choice throughout their career… to continue with the club that gave them their first grade debut or move on elsewhere for other opportunities.
For Penrith in recent years, they’ve almost gotten used to players departing.
Players they’ve developed.
Players they blooded.
Players they’ve given a chance.
Many leave for financial reasons. Some a new challenge. A lot of the times, both apply.
Jarome Luai, James Fisher-Harris and Sunia Turuva will be the latest to pack up their locker in the coming weeks as they get ready to set off on their new adventure.
“Far out bro… I’m not looking forward to it,” Turuva said about leaving the Panthers.
“I’m just trying to take each week at a time. Try not to think about it, but it’s sad times ahead.”
The 21-year-old isn’t sad about going to the Wests Tigers on a lucrative new contract, he’s sad that he has to leave a club that he loves due to, for the most part, the pressures of a successful club’s salary cap constraints.
While Fisher-Harris’ circumstances for leaving are different as he’s headed home to New Zealand to be closer to family, in a perfect world Turuva and Luai would be remaining at Penrith for many more years to come.
all my focus is at the moment.”
And while Turuva has admittedly had a shaky sophomore season at times – resulting in a couple of games missed due to coach’s decision – he knows he needs to take the next five weeks seriously to give himself the best shot at appearing in the Finals and getting that second ring he so badly desires.
Turuva said he and centre Izack Tago have been working hard to improve their performances in recent weeks, and it’s showed.
“We were leaking a few too many tries down our edge but in the last three weeks, myself and Tages have had a few honest chats with each other, just trying to narrow our focus each week,” he said.
“Whether good or bad, leaking a try or not, we know what our focus is and we try not to dwell on it for too long.”
Friday night’s clash against the Eels will be a special moment for the Tago family, with Izack and his older brother Jake coming up against each other in the NRL for the very first time.
The 25-year-old Parramatta winger made his debut last month, with Izack there to present him with his first grade jersey.
“It’s a special group here and I know that when us three move on, Penrith will still come through with special players.
“For the three of us though, it’s just team-first. Whatever happens with us… I’m dreading the day.”
Turuva already won a Premiership with
“Far out… the season has gone so quick. I don’t even want to think about [leaving in the coming months],” Turuva admitted to Extra Time
Penrith last season, but he said one more with his beloved Panthers would be the ultimate send off.
“Bro, it would be massive!” he said.
“For myself, there’s no other way to leave the club besides leaving here with a ring on my finger. That’s my focus at this point.
“I just want to take each week at a time. Play some good footy. Work on my defence. That’s
“Tages was telling me earlier this week that his mum was dreading the day when they verse each other – she wasn’t looking forward to it,” Turuva revealed.
“It’s exciting times for the family. I know it is for myself, having trained with Jake in the off-season when we get ready for pre-season.
“I’m really happy for him. He’s come a long way. He’s like 25-26, been really patient and put in a lot of hard work.”

HUGE STADIUM COVERAGE COMING UP
The Western Weekender will present a three-part series dedicated to the farewell of Penrith Park ahead of its major reconstruction.
The three-part series will appear in the Weekender’s print edition and online starting on August 23, continuing on August 30 and September 6.
It will be accompanied by special editions of the Weekender’s Panthers podcast, ‘Tension’s Running High’.
“The stadium means so much to so many people and this very much feels like the end of an era,” said Weekender Managing Editor, Troy Dodds.
“We know the stadium is coming back, and it will be a terrific venue, but the magic of this current venue will be hard to replicate.
“As Penrith’s newspaper of record, we wanted to say a proper goodbye to the venue with a special series.”
The series has partly been made possible thanks to a grant from the Local Independent News Association (LINA).
Part one will feature a detailed history of the stadium and its changes over the years, Part two will be focused on the faces and people who have made the stadium so iconic in Penrith, and Part three is a behind-the-scenes tour like you’ve never seen before.
In addition to the upcoming special features, the Weekender has revealed its plans for coverage of the upcoming Finals and potential Grand Final for Penrith.
“We have produced unrivalled Panthers Grand Final coverage over the last four years and we hope to do it again this year – we just need the boys to get there,” Dodds said.
Special 20-page editions of Extra Time will run on September 13, September 20 and September 27.
Troy Dodds and Nathan Taylor will spearhead the coverage with Peter Lang and The Masked Panther along for the ride.
And if Penrith make the Grand Final, it will kick-off an unprecedented week of coverage in the Weekender, culminating with a special commemorative print edition on Friday, October 4.
“We will provide extensive coverage throughout the week with every bit of news and information available, all with a Penrith flavour,” Dodds said.
“It’ll be a special week of coverage and our plan is to make it bigger and better than anything we’ve done over the last five years.”
To find out about advertising opportunities relating to the Weekender’s NRL coverage during the Finals, email sales@westernweekender.com.au.
BRIAN TO’O GOING NOWHERE
Panthers winger Brian To’o has confirmed his commitment to the Penrith Panthers.
After days of speculation last week suggesting he was unsettled at Penrith, the Origin star met with the club last Thursday and it’s understood both parties are on the same page.
To’o then took to Instagram to confirm he’s heading nowhere.
“Thanks for all the support fams,” he said. “Nothing to see. Not going anywhere, no shopping here. Let’s get it.”
Panthers Rugby League CEO Matt Cameron has confirmed the meeting had a positive outcome, essentially ending the story.
“Today we had a very positive discussion with Brian and his management,” Cameron told the Weekender last Thursday.
“Brian confirmed he is fully committed to the club moving forward as he aims to help the club win a fourth Grand Final.”
WHY PANTHERS KEEP WINNING
lang on league
with Peter Lang
Against popular opinion I’d like to suggest that losing so many superstar players over the last four years has actually ‘helped’ Penrith maintain their stranglehold at the top of the NRL ladder.
The Panthers have been on top of the table, riding high with four straight Grand Finals and three consecutive premierships and look in prime position to win four titles on the trot this season.
Wait a second, how can losing topline talent and representative players like Stephen Crichton, Spencer Leniu, Matt Burton and Viliame Kikau be a positive?
Simple, the production line assembled at the foot of the mountains via the club’s celebrated ‘Pathways Program’ just keeps churning out quality players to replace ones lost but you still have to keep your spine strong and intact.
Then build your players around your 1, 7, 9 and 13. It also helps when you have a representative prop, second rower and winger to support that spine.
Throw in the odd shrewd buy from outside the club and you have a recipe for long-term success.
The next generation of Panthers are already coming through to replace the stars which have departed.
18-year-old Casey McLean is his
own man but has already been compared to Stephen Crichton.
He’s only a baby in terms of NRL experience but what he’s shown in the four NRL games he’s played so far has Penrith supporters salivating for more.
Casey’s 19 year-old brother Jesse, looks equally as promising as does backrower 20-year-old Luron Patea and the list goes on.
There’s no doubt losing star players in the past has had an extremely negative impact on the club. They
simply weren’t set up to handle it.
However coach Ivan Cleary has learned to embrace the challenge and turned an otherwise negative into an amazing positive.
Early in the 2023 season Cleary admitted to having to tinker with the side’s attacking philosophy following the departure of Viliame Kikau to the Bulldogs.
It was a bit clunky at first without the ‘big fella’ but it didn’t take long for coach Cleary to get it right.
It’s nothing new for Penrith to
lose key players to the salary cap at the end of every season.
The coaching staff and players adapt and now see it as a pivotal part of the developing the club’s ‘next man up’ culture.
Having such high player turnover keeps existing players fresh and motivated.
It also keeps the playing group from becoming stale.
Same old training drills, same old moves, same old philosophies year after year.
Not at the Panthers.
People have been predicting Penrith’s demise since 2020 when the club made its first Grand Final in 17 years.
The loss to the Storm that year was supposed to have stopped the team dead in its tracks.
How wrong the critics and cynics were.
Now the same lines from the media and opposition fans are circulating again.
“Enjoy 2024 Panthers because without Jarome Luai and Sunia Turuva, your era of dominance will soon be over.”
There’s no doubt the Panthers dominance will one day come to an end, it’s kind-of inevitable that it will.
But not today….and probably not tomorrow either.
Enjoy your footy.
The Western Weekender Penrith Panthers Player of the Year competition runs throughout the season, with our four experts delivering a 3, 2, 1 rating for the best Panthers players from each Penrith game. The player with the most votes at the end of the season is crowned our Player of the Year.
panther memories
It’s always intriguing to look at players who only ever played a single first grade match with Penrith.
One of those players is journeyman Darrien Doherty, a Cambridge Park junior whose top grade rugby league record reads 67 games – but only one for the Panthers.
That one game was also his first grade debut.
Doherty made his one and only appearance for Penrith against the Western Suburbs Magpies on Sunday, August 26, 1990 at Campbelltown Sports Ground. He played in the number 12 jumper.
The Panthers were beaten 22-12, with Steve Carter scoring two tries and Ben Alexander landing the conversions.
It was Doherty’s only appearance for the club, with John Cartwright back in the starting side the following week.
Doherty went on to play first grade for Wests, Canterbury, Illawarra, Hunter and Adelaide, before finishing his career with the Cowboys in 1999 and 2000 (main picture).
Credited as Panther 297, Doherty is now 52.

MAGIC OF SNOW WHITE
The story of Snow White has been told time and time again. But, a new production of the classic fairytale is coming to Riverside in September, and you haven’t seen anything quite like this.
Eliza Sunderland is a UK-based performer who first met Bonnie Lythgoe and Christopher Wood last year when she was starring in a pantomime called ‘Beauty and the Beast’.
According to Sunderland, she made quite the impression on the duo, having been asked to audition ahead of the creation of their new show, ‘Snow White’.
“Chris emailed me a few months ago asking me if I would be interested in auditioning for the role of Snow White,” she said.
“It was a shock to be asked to audition for the show in Australia. I never would have guessed that. But, it was amazing.”
The show isn’t your typical retelling of the fairytale, instead consisting of interactive humour to the backdrop of an incredible soundtrack, ranging from Dua Lipa and Lizzo to other Disney hits.
“Chris got me to audition with ‘A Journey to the Past’ from ‘Anastasia’. I’ve always loved the song, and I’ve never had the opportunity to sing it or audition with it, so when he asked me to sing the song, I was delighted,” she said.
“I asked him if it was going to be in the show, and at the time, he said he wasn’t sure yet, but then we got the rights, so everything’s going well, which is great!”
Alongside Sunderland, stars from across the world will be coming together to bring the production to life.
“I’ve just been sent the script, so I’m excited
to read this!” she said.
“Obviously the cast is amazing. We have people like Sir Cliff Richard in it, we have Barry who played Doody in ‘Grease’, we have Deborah [Krizak]. It’s just amazing to see how different the cast is, and how we’ve been brought together from different parts of the world and different walks of life.”
The show will also include recorded scenes from Kyle Sandilands as Mirror Disgruntled.
Having last been to Australia on a cruise contract a number of years ago, Sunderland said one of the most exciting aspects of her doing the show is being able to come back Down Under.
“I don’t usually come to Australia, but I have been to Australia,” she said.
“I’m so looking forward to coming back and just exploring more, seeing more of the people, and just meeting the cast as well.”
As for what people can expect from a night at the theatre watching ‘Snow White’, Sunderland assures there will be something for everyone – not just the kids.
“A panto is always a great laugh to go and see no matter what age you are, and I think with Chris and Bonnie’s work together, I think they really produce that, and they’re going to be able to show that through this amazing cast,” she said.
“I think the writing is witty, it’s funny, it’s relatable. There are moments where you can feel for the characters, and there’s also moments where you’ll be uncontrollably laughing, and children will want to be silly and adults want to be silly. Australia is really going to love this production of ‘Snow White’.”
‘Snow White’ will be on at Riverside Theatres from Saturday, September 7 to Saturday, September 21. For more information, visit www.riversideparramatta.com.au.

SPRING IN TO GALLERY
Penrith Regional Gallery is hosting an inspiring suite of exhibitions showcasing the work of Natalya Hughes (pictured), Karlina Mitchell and the Open Studio program. With the official Open Day on Saturday, August 17 at 2pm and the display ending October 27, the public will be able to view and experience these extraordinary presentations for free.
‘Vuvale’ is an exhibition of new work by Karlina Mitchell, a Blue Mountains artist, who draws on the Fijian term to inspire her exhibition. Coming from association with family, the home, and the extended community, this immersive instillation interrogates the way diasporic communities express identity, starting in the home and extending through the community.
Australian artist Natalya Hughes’ ‘The Interior’ draws on gendered power dynamics that are experienced between private and public spaces using a playfully exaggerated consultation room. ‘The Interior’ encourages the audience to unpack their collective and unconscious biases through the furniture’s womanly forms as the space reimagines the existence of women in a post- ‘Me Too’ world.
‘To be continued’ features a display of artworks and experiments from the Penrith Regional Gallery’s Open Studio program. Centred around the process through which artistic ideas are formed, this exhibition is a culmination of individual projects by local secondary school students. The display includes works in progress that will continue to evolve over the exhibition period.
Penrith Regional Gallery’s Spring Suite of Exhibitions opens on Saturday, August 17. For more information, visit www.penrithregionalgallery.com.au.
At the movies...
Tense is the obvious word to describe M Night Shyamalan’s new thriller starring Josh Hartnett and Ariel Donoghue.
We get thrown pretty much straight into the action: apparent devoted father Cooper (Hartnett) is taking his daughter Riley (Donoghue) to the biggest show in town: a concert by Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan).
But as the sounds of screaming girls and raised mobile phones take over, Cooper notices something odd: the heavy police presence.
It doesn’t take long for Cooper to discover what’s really going on: a diligent and careful serial killer has made a mistake. The police know he’s at the concert, and even Lady Raven herself is on it. The trap to find a killer has been set.
For the next 90 minutes or so, we watch the
cat and mouse game unfold between police and bad guy. Will the serial killer escape the concert, or will the cops get their man?
For much of the film ‘Trap’ keeps you pretty strongly engrossed. It’s not quite edge of your seat thrills, but it does raise the heart rate a little throughout.
And I would have rated it much higher if it wasn’t for what could only be described as a rather farcical final 15 or so minutes, where things really go into raised eyebrow territory.
M Night Shyamalan loves a twist, and he delivers one pretty early in ‘Trap’, with the
final surprise not all that surprising at all, to be honest.
It’s a decent movie with a strong plot that you won’t be disappointed seeing on the big screen. You’ll just wish it finished before jumping the shark.

COUNTRY CORNER
Sweet new track
Aussie singer/songwriter Caitlyn Shadbolt (pictured above) has released her beautiful new single, ‘Where The Lemons Grow’.
A prolific songwriter, Shadbolt penned the track with the equally accomplished, Sarah Buckley.
“‘Where The Lemons Grow’ is a song I penned with Sarah Buckley, about the bittersweet of life,” Shadbolt said.
“It acknowledges the two sides of the coin. ‘Bees sting but they make good honey, birds sing when it ain’t all sunny’. Through hardship, you can find silver linings, and this song touches on that.”
The song is out now on all the usual streaming services.
Abbie’s party anthem
Fresh from a whirlwind trip to Nashville where she performed seven shows in three weeks, South Australia via Central Coast country sing er-songwriter Abbie Ferris has unleashed her new single ‘That Ain’t You’, via Potts Entertainment/ MGM.
A sassy, empowered party anthem driven by an irresistible drum groove and raunchy guitars, the song was written in Nashville with US writers CJ Monaghan and Ryan T Jacobs and produced by Ferris’ long-time collaborator, Golden Guitar nominee Michael Carpenter.
“I wanted to write a different kind of party song, about having fun on your own terms, knowing what you want – and what you don’t want,” Ferris said.
“I really let my inner Shania come out on this one.”
The song is out now on all the usual streaming services.
Post Malone’s country hint
It’s probably the most hotly anticipated album of the year – and Post Malone has dropped more hints about the upcoming project.
‘F-1 Trillion’ will drop on August 16, and he’s released the track list – including duets with Hank Williams Jr, Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs and Chris Stapleton.

The series exposes the risks humans take when they try to raise these animals as members of their family, as well as the risks to the welfare of the animals themselves.
Ê New UK game show ‘Lingo’ will premiere on 10 this Monday, August 12 at 2.30pm. Just like ‘Wordle’, players have several guesses to try and find the ‘Lingo’ word. It’s hosted by British actor and comedian Adil Ray.

Hair products under the microscope
When it comes to heat styling your hair, the tools you use aren’t necessarily the most important thing to ensuring you can create a smooth, frizz-free look without damage – it’s the products.
As someone who heat styles my hair at least once a week, products with heat protection are some of the most important in my routine. No hot tool will ever touch my hair without it!
Here are my thoughts on some of today’s most popular heat protectants.
Ouai Leave In Conditioner
The Ouai Leave In Conditioner retails for $55 at Mecca, and promises to both detangle and protect hair, ensuring a result free of frizz and flyaways.
This product takes the word ‘conditioner’ seriously, with a thick, milky consistency similar to what you’d use in the shower.
Whilst I think it does the job when used correctly – minimally, and on wet hair – it is very easy to use too much of this product accidentally, resulting in hair that almost feels greasy, like you’d need to wash it all over again. For this reason, it’s not one that I’d recommend.
Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Hair Styling Spray
The Color Wow Dream Coat is more of an anti-frizz treatment than a heat protectant, though of course it does both. It’s meant to be used liberally on wet hair, providing a smooth, shiny look when activated with heat.
I reviewed this product in full last year for In The Mirror, and my thoughts have remained the same. Looking back on photos of my hair when I was using the product frequently, I feel as though I can really see a difference! If you can justify the cost, I think it’s definitely worth a try.
Briogeo Farewell Frizz Blow Dry Perfection Heat Protectant Cream
The Briogeo Farewell Frizz Heat Protectant Cream is described as being good for both the look and health of your hair, packed with ingredients like rosehip, argan, and coconut oils. Briogeo is one of my favourite hair care brands for this reason, and the performance of this product is no different from others I’ve tried. Unlike the others on this list, this product is in a tube rather than a spray bottle, which I think gives you more control in application. It smells lovely, and does a great job at protecting your hair.
Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Joia Milky Leave-in Conditioner
Whilst they’re most famous for their body products and sprays, Sol de Janeiro also has haircare products, like the Brazilian Joia Milky Leave-in Conditioner. It’s said to provide weightless hydration, fight frizz for up to 72 hours, repair split ends, and protect against heat damage.
Though like the Ouai product, it is on the creamier side, I find this product melds into the hair much better. It also has the classic Sol de Janeiro scent, which is always a bonus!
Revlon Uniq One All In One Curls Treatment
For those with curly hair who like to use heat when drying, a leave in or curl cream with heat protection, like the Revlon Uniq One All In One Curls Treatment, is essential.
This product retails for $29.95, and is said to provide 10 benefits, including enhancing curl definition, reducing frizz and hydrating your hair – and I think it does all of these.

CAN I PAY FOR THAT WITH MY SUPERANNUATION?
From social media platforms to conversations in the pub, people often want to know if they are able to access their super to pay for something they can’t afford. There are circumstances where you can access funds early, but they are very limited and very strictly enforced.
People often ask why they can’t use it?
It is their money after all. The reason the government doesn’t allow it is that the money is mandated savings to fund retirement. The funds are taxed at concessional rates as compensation for not being able to use it until we retire. Prior to superannuation, very few people adequately saved for when they were no longer receiving an income. If allowed to access super funds, too many people would do so and then not have enough savings to fund retirement years. This not only leads to a lower standard of living for these people but it is also a financial drain for the government.
There are some situations where superannuation can be accessed early. Death, terminal illness and total and permanent disability are all conditions of release that most people are familiar with. The two circumstances that cause the most issues are for severe financial hardship and compassionate grounds.
Two areas that cause confusion and, at times, a lot of misinformation is provided, are
in relation to accessing funds for a medical procedure and to prevent foreclosure on a mortgage.
It is possible to access funds for those reasons, but it is very, very strict. For the
medical procedure, the condition has to be life-threatening and/or be causing acute and chronic pain. Furthermore, the procedure must not be readily available through the public system. The ATO clearly defines what
they believe to be chronic and severe pain and what they determine is life-threatening. Life-threatening is defined as the likelihood that the condition will degenerate and lead to the client’s death within 12 months. It also states that this is for existing medical conditions not potential conditions.
The one I hear all the time is where people wish to use their superannuation for gastric band surgery. The argument being that, unless the person can lose weight, they are in a life-threatening situation. The ATO has specifically stated that this is NOT life-threatening by their definition and is not allowed.
The other condition of release that leads to confusion is the payment for mortgage assistance. Again, it is possible to do this, but under very limited circumstances. The payment has to be for severe financial hardship specifically to prevent foreclosure and must be on the primary residence. It cannot relate to a personal loan or an investment property loan (even if the primary residence is also held as security) and is limited to a maximum amount of $10,000 in any 12 month period.
Early access to your super really is a last resort, and should be treated as such. Although possible to access, it is very difficult, and will only be allowable in very limited circumstances and under strict conditions.

MAKING THE TOUGHEST DECISION AS PET OWNERS
Saying farewell to a beloved pet is one of the most challenging and emotional experiences a pet owner can face. The decision to opt for pet euthanasia is especially heart-wrenching, as it embodies a deep sense of love, responsibility, and a desire to alleviate suffering.
Our pets are not just animals; they become treasured members of our families, offering unconditional love, companionship, and joy. However, as caring pet owners, we must face the reality that our pets are vulnerable to illness and aging. When a once-vibrant companion begins to suffer, and their quality of life diminishes, euthanasia can become a compassionate, yet difficult, consideration.
Choosing euthanasia is an act of profound love. It is a selfless decision made to prioritise the pet’s well-being, sparing them from unnecessary pain and discomfort. This final act of kindness requires immense courage from
the pet owner, who must often set aside their own grief to ensure their loyal friend’s comfort and dignity.
The process of saying goodbye through euthanasia involves more than just the physical
they can still enjoy a meaningful, pain-free life.
The experience of saying goodbye begins even before the euthanasia procedure. Pet owners often face anticipatory grief, mourning the impending loss
procedure; it is an emotional journey requiring open communication with veterinarians, family members, and oneself.
It is essential to understand the pet’s condition, discuss potential treatments, and consider whether
and reflecting on the cherished moments shared with their pets.
This period provides an opportunity to create lasting memories, express gratitude, and shower the pet with extra love and care.
Once the difficult decision has
been made and the farewell has taken place, the grieving process begins.
Coping with the loss of a pet is a unique and personal experience, and it’s crucial to give yourself the time and space to grieve.
Seeking support from friends, family, or pet loss support groups can offer comfort and understanding during this challenging time.
Ultimately, pet euthanasia is a compassionate choice that arises from love and responsibility. It allows our beloved companions to leave this world peacefully and with dignity, surrounded by the love of those who cherished them. Although the pain of loss may persist, the memories of the joy, companionship, and unconditional love our pets brought into our lives will endure forever.

YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT
If you’re experiencing pain, mobility issues, or recovering from an injury, a consultation with a physiotherapist can be a crucial step towards improving your health. Here’s what you can expect from your initial consultation to help
Initial assessment
The first step in your consultation is a thorough assessment. The physiotherapist will ask about your medical history, current symptoms, and any relevant lifestyle factors. This discussion helps them understand the nature and potential cause of your condition.
Physical examination
Next, the physiotherapist will conduct a physical examination. This may include observing your posture, gait, and range of motion. They may also perform specific tests to assess strength, flexibility, and functional movements specific to you and your goals. The goal is to identify
any imbalances, weaknesses, or areas of pain.
Diagnosis and explanation
Based on the assessment and examination, the physiotherapist will provide a diagnosis.
They will explain the findings in understandable terms, helping you to grasp the underlying issues contributing to your symptoms. This clarity is crucial for understanding the treatment plan.
Personalised treatment plan
Your physiotherapist will develop a personalised treatment plan tailored to your specific needs and goals. This plan may include exercises to improve strength and flexibility, manual therapy techniques, and advice on modifying activities to reduce strain. They will also provide education on the above so that you understand the intervention maximising adherence and outcomes.
Setting goals
Setting realistic, achievable goals is a key part of the consultation.
These goals might be related to pain reduction, improving mobility, or returning to specific activities. Your physiotherapist will work with you to outline short-term and long-term objectives, ensuring that your treatment plan is aligned with your aspirations.
Questions and concerns
Finally, your physiotherapist will address any questions or concerns you might have. This is your opportunity to discuss expectations, clarify doubts, and understand the next steps in your treatment journey.

AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Mercury is still in retrograde mode (until August 28-29) so be careful how you treat other people, in person and online. Self-indulgent behaviour, unrealistic expectations and controversial comments will just boomerang back on you! So your mantra is from actress Cara Delevingne (who turns 32 on Monday), “The energy you give off is the energy you receive.” Some quiet meditation or soulful contemplation will help you get through the week in a more relaxed state.
TAURUS
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
The Mars/Jupiter conjunction boosts family fun and feelgood vibes – as long as you communicate clearly and sensitively. With Neptune and Saturn both transiting through your sign, it’s time to set inspirational long-term goals, and then work hard to turn them into concrete reality. No procrastinating Pisces! No lame excuses! Be inspired by model and actress Cara Delevingne (who turns 32 on Monday), “Believe in yourself. Make yourself proud.”
GEMINI
© Joanne Madeline Moore 2024
Are you feeling hemmed in at home? Mercury reverses through your domestic zone (from Thursday until August 28-29) which could cramp your style. Try cleaning, de-cluttering, renovating and/ or extending your present living space so it’s more spacious. Bulls need room to breathe! Expect some family drama, as impatience and uncertainty overtake common sense. If you try to escape from your current commitments, then loved ones won’t be impressed.
LEO
JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
Mercury reverses into your sign, so plans will proceed slowly. And Sunday looks particularly tricky, as the retro Mercury/Uranus square highlights personal or professional problems. On Wednesday, Mars and Jupiter stimulate your friendship zone, so it’s a good time to network with your peer group and catch up with close friends. Be inspired by actress Gillian Anderson, “I believe people are in our lives for a reason. We’re here to learn from each other.”
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
With Mercury reversing into your career zone, proceed carefully with a complicated professional project. If you are too hasty (or too stubborn) then you’ll experience communication problems with a colleague, client or customer. Plus Uranus also squares retro Mercury – so unpredictable feelings could re-surface, as loved ones push your emotional buttons. Simmer down Scorpio, otherwise you run the risk of turning a minor matter into a major obsession.
With retrograde Mercury and the Sun in your neighbourhood zone, find more meaningful ways to connect with people and contribute to your local community. Education and short trips are highlighted, plus expect plenty of phone calls, snail mail, texts, tweets and emails. But you’ll also have to handle stress, delays and misunderstandings along the way. The secret to a successful week is getting the balance right between being spontaneous and being patient.
VIRGO
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
Your ruling planet Mercury is still in retrograde mode. So it’s time for active and conscientious Virgos to pace yourself, as some plans backfire and confidence levels are lower than usual. You could also question your current trajectory and look to others for feedback and approval. Don’t overdo it! Madonna (who celebrates her 66th birthday on Friday) observes, “If your joy is derived from what others think of you, then you’re going to be disappointed.”
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
Most Sagittarians are independent, freedom-loving souls. And this week, gung-ho Mars and generous Jupiter (your patron planet) hookup in your partnership zone. So the focus is on relationships of all sorts – romantic, platonic and professional. The more proactive and positive you are, the better. Your motto is from birthday great, psychotherapist and bestselling author Esther Perel, “Our need for togetherness exists alongside our need for separateness.”
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
Have you been waiting in the wings or sulking on the sidelines? This week the fiery Leo Sun activates your creativity and entertainment zone. And gung-ho Mars (your power planet) hooks up with adventurous Jupiter. So spring into action – wake up, explore, experiment, get into party mode and make some noise! Be inspired by original celebrity chef – and birthday great – Julia Child, “Find something you’re passionate about and keep tremendously interested in it.”
Are you a luxury-loving Crab who’s living in financial fairyland? With Mercury reversing through your financial zone (from Thursday) you’re in the mood to spend up a storm. But make sure your personal finances are rock solid before you commit to a major purchase. And – if you can – delay making any big-ticket buys (and signing contracts) until after Mercury moves forwards on August 28-29. Your motto for the week? Spend in haste, repent at leisure!
Helpful Librans to the rescue! Venus and retrograde Mercury increase your interest in assisting those who are sick, in trouble or in need. You’ll find the more you lend a hand to others, the better you’ll feel and the more useful you’ll be. A personal matter should also improve, as Mars and Jupiter help you put a philosophical spin on a frustrating situation. Rest and relaxation are important, as you set aside some quality time with a very special person … you.
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Expect some frustration or conflict this week Capricorn. Mercury is still retrograde, and go-slow Saturn (your ruling planet) squares gung-ho Mars on Friday. So you could feel like a car trying to move forward with the handbrake on! Patience and persistence are required if you want to steer projects through to a satisfactory conclusion. The Mars/Jupiter conjunction favours fresh, nutritious food; jaunty walks in the fresh air; and having fun with pets.
SUPERB STAYCATION SPOT
We have officially passed the midway point of the year and in my opinion, things can become a little monotonous, but I have the perfect fix to beat your midyear blues: a staycation.
I went on a winter staycation at the Pullman Sydney Hyde Park, and it was the perfect choice.
I had never stayed at a Pullman Hotel or even a five-star hotel before, so this was a decadent and luxurious experience for me.
Right from the moment I arrived, and the staff were so kind and attentive, I knew I had chosen the right spot.
While there is parking on site for guests to use, I recommend utilising the train as well. Museum Station is so close to the hotel and frequently does a city loop while also connecting users to Central Station to explore the rest of the city.
I stayed in a Deluxe Park View Room, which was so spacious and overlooked a gorgeous scene of Hyde Park.
The view was even better at night, there is just something about the city lights that made the view even more special.
What also really caught my eye was the incredible ANZAC Memorial that sits in Hyde Park. It looked so impressive, and I really recommend checking it out during your stay.
After checking in, I just marvelled at the room I was given to stay in for the night, but the bathroom was the thing I was most surprised about.
If you are anything like me or my family every other time we have stayed at a hotel we cram as many people into one room to save a bit
of money – which in my opinion is the way to go if you are on a budget – but this bathroom was so spacious that both my guest and I could have stood in there and not been anywhere near each other. The triangle bath was very decadent and added to the luxury feel of the stay.
While my guest and I waited for our dinner reservation we went for a walk along Oxford Street. If you know Sydney, then you know this street is a particularly bustling part of town. It is flanked by unlimited bars, paint and sip places and the iconic Oxford Art Factory, a thriving music venue.
My guest and I spent the evening relaxing in the hotel before checking out the rooftop pool.
At night, the surrounding city buildings provide a great view to look at while swimming or using the spa – perfect for a winter’s evening!
After a long sleep in – those block out curtains really do wonders – we went down to the breakfast buffet to refuel for the day before heading back home.
The selection of food available was endless, there was nothing you couldn’t get your hands on!
There were pastries, toast, cereal, bacon, eggs, fruit, yoghurt and juice amongst many other things.
It made me want to go back several times but there is only so much I can eat!
The best part about the breakfast was after being seated the
“AFTER CHECKING IN, I JUST MARVELLED AT THE ROOM”
attentive wait staff came over and took our coffee order. In my other experiences of a hotel buffet, I have never had my coffee order taken, so it was lovely to go and get food to come back to my table where a hot coffee was made exactly to my liking.
My guest and I were sad to go but if you have a staycation on your mind, I highly recommend a weekend at the Pullman Hyde Park.
The writer stayed as a guest of Pullman Hyde Park.

divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

DREAM COME TRUE FOR FOX
Story continued from » p.96
“The first heat was quite unsettling. It was the beefier side of the draw, and it was quite hard and then I progressively knocked out the hardest competitors as I went through.
“When I got to the semi-final – that was my realistic goal that I walked into Paris with – and I knew anything was possible from there.”
The Fox sisters will return to Australia having won all three Gold medals on offer in the women’s Canoe Slalom at the Paris Olympic Games – a remarkable accomplishment for a couple of girls from Penrith.
In other Olympic news, Australia celebrated a medal in the rowing last week when Penrith resident Annabelle McIntyre and her teammate Jess Morrison collected Bronze in the Women’s Pair event.
Australia finished third behind The Netherlands and Romania, clocking a time of 7:03.54. It was Australia’s only rowing medal of the Paris Games.
In the diving pool, Penrith-born diver Melissa Wu reached the Final of the Women’s 10m Platform, however finished in 11th place.
On the court, Penrith Basketball junior Josh Green and the Aussie Boomers were eliminated in the quarter finals after losing to Serbia in overtime 95-90. It was a lacklustre second Olympics for the 23-year-old NBA star, who failed to score a single point in his four matches.
Plans underway to honour triumphant Fox sisters in Penrith Stamp of approval
TROY DODDS
Noemie Fox’s incredible Gold medal efforts in Paris are being immortalised by Australia Post with the release of a commemorative stamp.
Australia Post is releasing the limited edition stamps to coincide with each Gold medal at the games. Noemie’s sister Jess is already locked in for a stamp.
Australia Post Executive General Manager Retail, Josh Bannister, said the stamp program is an historic honour for Gold medal winners.
“Australia Post is proud to support the incredible talent in the Aussie Olympic team and honour our Gold medal winners with their own official stamp. Recognising athletes on a stamp that is accessible to their families and all Australians is a special tribute,” he said.
“Whether it be in the pool, track, courtside, on the pitch or their support behind their favourite Gold medallists and take home a piece of history with

AOC Chief Executive Officer, Matt Carroll, says the limited-edition collectables will be a timeless reminder of this Australian Team.
“Australians are rightly proud of their Olympic Teams which are drawn from towns and communities from across the country,” he said.
“We have selected 460 athletes from 33 sports and they all come together as one at the Paris 2024 Games. I know each athlete will be celebrated whether they achieve a medal, a personal best, a courageous performance or display an act of great sportsmanship.”
Meanwhile, Penrith City Council says it will honour the Fox sisters with a civic event in the near future.
“This is a special moment for Jessica and Noemie, and one that our City has been invested in,” Penrith Mayor Carney said. And there will be a major celebration in Sydney for all Olympic and Paralympic
40 years in hockey: Chantal’s passion is now a family tradition
South Penrith hockey star Chantal Knowles has represented her state and country on numerous occasions, but she says one of the best moments of her four-decade career is playing alongside her teenage son.
The 45-year-old local mother of three made the admission after being announced as the latest recipient of the Penrith Valley Sports Foundation Senior Sports Star Award.
Speaking with the Weekender, Knowles said she’s had many proud moments over her incredible sporting career.
“I think my very first Masters tournament when I went away to Darwin and we won the Gold medal – that was one of the best tournaments I’ve been to,” she said.
“Also, the Trans-Tasman Tournament against New Zealand last year where I was in the Australian 45s team. We beat the Kiwis 6-1 in the Final and I was awarded Players Player of the tournament. Getting voted by your teammates is probably one of my greatest achievements.”
But it’s the simple things in life that really make this hockey-obsessed mum smile the most.
“I get to play with my 14-year-old son every now and then and it’s been one of the best things that I’ve done,” she said.
“He plays in the Men’s comp out here on Sundays, and they allow girls to play. I jumped on the field with him, and he loved it. It was
really cool to play with him.”
Knowles, a popular member of Penrith Panthers Hockey Club in the Nepean Hockey Association, has been playing since the tender age of four and recently racked up 40 years with the one sport.
“I’ve known nothing else; I’ve always played hockey and I love it,” she said.
“My whole family plays hockey. My kids play hockey, my nieces are coming through at the moment. So, it’s a family sport for sure.”
Knowles has represented Nepean in all age groups for both field and indoor hockey. She has represented NSW as a Masters player for 10 years and Australia for four years.
“I was supposed to go to Spain but the trip was cancelled due
Giants settle on new leadership group
It’s the dawning of a new era at the GWS Giants with star midfielder Rebecca Beeson appointed the club’s captain for the upcoming AFLW season.
The tough and classy midfielder will take the reins from club stalwart Alicia Eva, who stepped down as captain at the end of last year following five seasons in the role.
A Sydney local and inaugural Giant, entering her ninth season at the club, Beeson is just the third captain in the club’s AFLW history, following Eva and inaugural captain Amanda Farrugia.
Beeson’s appointment comes following a vote from the Giants playing group and coaching staff, with the 27-year-old chosen by her peers to lead the side in season 2024.
Establishing herself as one of the club’s brightest young stars since being taken with pick 32 in the inaugural draft in 2016, Beeson claimed the 2019 Gabrielle Trainor Medal as club champion and has continued to be one of the Giants’ key players ever since.
Last year Beeson recommitted to the club long-term with a new four-year deal to keep her in
orange and charcoal until at least the end of the 2027 season.
Beeson is joined in the 2024 leadership group by Katherine Smith – who has been named vice-captain – as well as young guns Alyce Parker and Tarni Evans.
GWS Giants CEO David Matthews congratulated Beeson on the appointment.
“Appointing a captain is a significant decision for any club and we’re in great hands with Bec leading us into a new era for our AFLW program,” he said.
“Alicia was an outstanding leader for us for a long period of time and as I said when she made the choice to stand down from the role at the end of last season, we are so fortunate to have someone of the calibre of Alicia at our football club.
“Bec’s story is one of persistence and perseverance and to see her growth from when she was drafted to now has been a great testament to her as a person and a player.
“It’s fantastic to have someone who has been at our club since the very start, and who is a local product of the NSW pathway programs, lead our club in 2024.
“I also congratulate Katherine, Tarni and Alyce who will support
Bec in her new role as we look towards a successful future for our exciting young group.”
Beeson’s appointment continues a whirlwind two years for the gun midfielder who missed the entirety of season seven due to concussion issues before returning to the field – and her best – last season to finish equal third in the 2023 Gabrielle Trainor Medal.
“I’m thrilled for Bec, she’s the perfect person to lead our program into a new era,” coach Cam Bernasconi said.
“The role of captain is not just about what happens on the field but it’s about setting the standards every day off it and the values you live by.
“Bec is a fantastic example of exactly what our club and playing group represent and the best choice to lead our young group into the future.
“Our leadership group represent the values of our team and each of them bring different traits and strengths which complement each other and make them great leaders both individually and as a group.”
Following a pair of practice matches, the Giants will kickstart their 2024 campaign with a blockbuster clash with the Western Bulldogs on Saturday, August 31.
to COVID and I was supposed to go to Nottingham in the UK earlier this year for the Indoor World Cup, but I had to pull out due to injury,” Knowles said.
“I’ve been to New Zealand quite a few times to play against the Kiwis, and I’m excited to be going back there this November for the Masters World Cup.”
Knowles said she’s “very grateful” to pick up the PVSF Senior Sports Star Award.
“I hope winning this award helps to promote hockey in the community,” she said.
“It’s a great sport and the more people that come and play the better!”

Views mixed on trial of Friday night timeslot for junior matches
Panthers Juniors Rugby League says it will review feedback from a recent trial it held before it potentially implements a new timeslot that could have a major effect on some of the game’s youngest players.
Late last month, Panthers Juniors gave parents, coaches and players less than one week’s notice when it decided to move the U5 and U6 fixtures from their usual timeslot of Saturday morning to Friday night.
Panthers Juniors said the trial was designed to explore new ideas and opportunities for growth in the district, but some parents and coaches have slammed the move as “challenging” and said it puts an unnecessary pressure on families who are already juggling numerous responsibilities.
Brothers Penrith Junior Rugby League Club coach Poya Katebi flew home early from Melbourne on Friday, July 26, in order to make the 6.15pm clash at Peppertree Sporting Complex in Erskine Park.
Katebi, whose young son plays in the U6 team, said the whole situa-
tion was very inconvenient for not only him but the majority of his side.
“Half our team can play tonight but the other half – due to family commitments and other arrangements – aren’t able to make it,”
Katebi told the Weekender prior to the game.
“The usual timeslot is Saturday from 8.30am to 11am, which has traditionally always been the time. That’s what all the families signed up for at the start of the season.
“Playing games on a Friday night is a challenge. Not only is there peak hour traffic to contend with but it’s cold and kids of that age are often too exhausted after school to play.”
Panthers Juniors confirmed to the Weekender that the test run it held was a one-off and they don’t plan to hold any more for that particular age group before the end of the season.
Katebi said he was unimpressed with the hastiness of the trial.
“My biggest issue is the lack of consultation. If you’re going to trial something, give parents more than five days’ notice,” he said.
“An easier way would’ve been to put out a survey to the coaches and parents.”
Brothers Penrith weren’t the only
club impacted by the trial, with all clubs throughout the district involved in some capacity.
Panthers Juniors General Manager Blake South said the feedback following the trial was rather mixed.
“We’ve had some positive feedback as well as some negative, but that’s common with any implementation of change,” he told the Weekender
“The reasoning behind it, is we’re always looking at new ideas and different opportunities for kids to play in our district.
“It was just a trial to see what the feel was. Whether it was something the parents would be open to and especially for parents with larger families – it’s one less game they have to attend on a Saturday.”
South said Panthers Juniors have held night games in the past as well as an evening U7 Gala Day and the “kids love it”, however a decision on whether this particular change involving the U5s and U6s gets rubber stamped won’t be made until all feedback has been considered.
“We’re still gathering feedback and we’re going to send an email to parents who attended in those age groups, just to get some more raw feedback,” South said.
RUGBY LEAGUE: Brothers Penrith have raised an incredible $10,002 for The Haven – Nepean Women’s Shelter. The local junior league club raised the much-needed funds through their incredible Women in League initiatives across the season. Brothers Penrith raised $7000 through team jersey sales, $934.50 through supporter jersey sales, $565 through a cake stall, $1100 through a Panthers jersey auction, and more than $400 through other donations. “We could not be prouder of our club, players, supporters, volunteers and everyone that contributed to this fantastic achievement,” the club said in a statement. “It is so heart-warming that we all came together to support and raise awareness for a local charity that provides much-needed assistance to our local community.”
RUGBY LEAGUE: Round 18 of the NSWRL Ron Massey Cup and Sydney Shield competitions took place last weekend, with mixed results for St Marys and Brothers Penrith. In the Sydney Shield, St Marys enjoyed a huge win over the Moorebank Rams 50-22, while Brothers Penrith went down to Manly Leagues 24-16. BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers Waratah 2 Youth League Men’s team have ended the regular season undefeated. The
Panthers secured their 24th win out of 24 games when they took down Manly in overtime last weekend.
Penrith were down by 14 against Manly before they levelled the scores at full-time 82-82. When overtime got underway, the Panthers were far too good – prevailing 101-95 to finish the year on top. The Youth League playoffs get underway this weekend at Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre, with the Panthers battling the Sydney Comets.
NETBALL: Panthers Netball lost their final game of the season, going down to the Suther land Stingrays 62-52 in Round 18 of the Netball NSW Premier League Opens competition. Panthers ended the year in eighth position, with four wins and 14 losses to their name. Meanwhile, the Panthers U23s team won their final game, narrowly defeating the Stingrays 49-47. The Panthers U23s team enjoyed a better season than their older counterparts, ending the year in fifth position with 10 wins, seven losses and one draw.
FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers have secured the loan signing of defender Jeong Tae-wook from Jeonbuk Motors for the upcoming A-League Men season. The towering defender has arrived in western Sydney with years of experience in the Korean top-flight with over 170 appearances to his name. The 27-year-old has winning pedigree, having won the Asian Cup and AFC U23 Asian Cup with the South Korean national team which he also
captained at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. On the domestic stage, Tae-wook was also the runner-up of the Korean Cup during his stints at his last two clubs. More recently, the defender has featured heavily in Jeonbuk Motors local campaign and also played in their AFC Champions League Quarter Final against Ulsan HD. Playing outside of Korea for the first time in his career, Tae-wook said he was excited for this new chapter of his career. “I am so happy to be joining the Western Sydney Wanderers,” he said. “I am very excited to start my new chapter here, and I will try my best to live up to the expectations that the fans and club has for me. Thank you and see you on the pitch.” Wanderers coach Alen Stajcic spoke highly of Jeong Tae-wook’s experience. “Jeong has played over 150 games in the K-League and played recently in the AFC Asian Champions League Quarter Final so he brings a wealth of experience to our team and sharing that with some of our younger defensive players will be invaluable,” he said.
AFL: The Penrith Rams’ unbeaten run has continued after they belted the East Coast Eagles 137-19 in Round 15 of the AFL Sydney Men’s Division 2 competition. The Rams booted 20 goals to three for one of their biggest victories of the season. The players deemed best for the Rams were Matthew Field, Luke Cooke, Benjamin Zalac, Phillip Aumann, Jonathan Green and Kingston Edwards. Penrith will
take on the UTS Bats this Saturday at Trumper Oval. Meanwhile, the Penrith Ramettes have bounced back from last week’s loss to defeat Macquarie University 35-12 in Round 15 of the AFL Sydney Women’s Division 2 competition. The players deemed best for the Ramettes were Sophie Dixon, Tamara Mossfield, Kristyn Baker, Ashleigh McInerney, Faith Clark and Emma Nolan. Penrith will play the Camden Cats this Saturday at Greygums Oval.
AFL: The GWS Giants have moved into fourth position after defeating the Hawthorn Hawks 84-82 in Round 21 of the AFL. A seven-goal final quarter propelled the Giants to the two-point win at Manuka Oval in Canberra, their fifth victory in a row. It was a remarkable comeback from the men in orange, who were on the back foot, down by as much as 28 points. In other news, with his five goals against the Hawks, Jesse Hogan moved ahead of Charlie Curnow to be the outright leader in the Coleman Medal race. Hogan has now kicked at least four goals in eight games this season, including each of his last five games. GWS will aim to get their undefeated run alive when they battle second-placed Brisbane at the Gabba on Saturday afternoon.

NOEMIE’S GOLDEN MOMENT IN PARIS
Penrith’s latest Olympic champion Noemie Fox said she could hear her proud mum and coach Myriam cheering from the sidelines as she crossed the line in first place in the Women’s Kayak Cross on Tuesday morning.
The 27-year-old Leonay paddler scored a victory in the quarter final before producing a stunning comeback to win her semi. Noemie then started well in the Final and showed grit, determination and composure in the most frantic version of the sport to cruise home for Olympic Gold ahead of France and Great Britain.
Older sister Jess – already a double Gold medal winner in Paris – jumped into the whitewater immediately after the race to celebrate the shock win.
“It’s just incredible what Noemie did today and to make it through each round with such composure. I’m so proud of her!” Jess told Channel Nine.
Noemie’s mum, who collected K1 Bronze in Atalanta in 1996, said she was just thrilled to witness her youngest make the Final in her debut Games.
“I thought that is fantastic, she’s in the Final of a tough race,” Myriam said.
“It’s just a bonus and I hope she can enjoy it and I hope she can fight. I was hoping for a medal… whatever the medal, it would’ve been fabulous.
“I was hysterical on the sideline, yelling at
you (Noemie) when you finished first.”
Noemie, whose selection on the Australian Olympic Team for Paris was only made official just last month, said she could hear her passionate mum cheering loudly as the race came to its exciting conclusion.
“I heard her!” Noemie revealed to Nine.
“You don’t hear the crowd much because it’s such a big buzz – you feel the energy –and when I came out and realised that I was first, I heard you (Myriam) scream.”
After watching her superstar sister Jess win K1 Gold and C1 Gold in Paris last week, Noemie made it her mission to make some Olympic history herself by becoming the first female ever to win Canoe Slalom’s newest event.
Noemie said just making the Australian Olympic Team was a huge challenge in itself, let alone coming away with a medal.
“I thought that it was just a privilege to be in Paris, to be in the Olympic team. It had been a dream for so long, it felt unattainable,” she admitted.
