Historic manufacturing site set for revival with hope for hundreds of positions ALENA HIGGINS

enrith’s former Crane Enfield Metals site is set for a rebirth amid plans to transform it back into a manufacturing powerhouse, generating hundreds of local jobs in the process.

Sydney - based AonAri Property (AonAri) recently purchased the massive 120,000sqm site at 2115 Castlereagh Road, after the Crane Copper Tube factory closed its doors due to unprofitably in 2014.

AonAri Minister for Expansion John Joannou said the company intends to reinvigorate the existing space and honour its rich history, bringing it back to life to accommodate a host of micro and medium-sized manufactures.

“What we’re trying to achieve is not large- scale manufacturing where it’s automised and you’ve got 10, 20 people, we want to get two, three hundred people working in here,” he said.

“Our wish is to be able to have people manufacture their product, be proud of it, employ people doing it, not just one or two – we want to get users in here that are heavy on staff, heavy on employment and people can come and buy.”

Metals expanded into Penrith in the early 1960s and employed a whopping 1,200 people on the site in its heyday.

In 2005, the aluminium portion of the

business was sold to Capral Aluminium, which still operates on a section of the lot.

PRD Commercial Western Sydney Associate Director Jay Morosi said the site

offered great appeal, not only due to its extensive power provisions but also its abundance of parking.

“Further east they’re all about warehousing which doesn’t require power, but with manufacturing starting to come back, manufacturers require power and they also require cranes as well, and that’s something we have on site,” he said.

Already zoned for manufacturing and a portion for retail, Mr Joannou predicts things will move quickly once the masterplan for the site is finalised in the coming weeks, and called on interested parties and locals to get in touch to have their say on the concept.

“We are looking out to the community and getting involved with as many people as possible to see what they really want here in Penrith,” he said.

“Ultimately for us it is jobs and manufacturing – that’s the two must- haves in our formula – and everything else we’re looking at.”

He said AonAri, which strategically identifies and acquires under-performing commercial and industrial properties, has set its sights on the region.

“For us as a business, definitely there’s a decision within to move a lot of our interests into Penrith, and this is the first site and we are looking at other sites,” he said.

It’s all about playing politics Rugby league’s anthem debacle I don’t know about you but I sang the National Anthem a little louder than normal on Wednesday night ahead of the State of Origin series opener in Adelaide.

The decision by the ARL Commission and NRL to reinstate the anthem as part of the pre- match run- down just hours after dumping it from the schedule was one of rugby league’s great backflips.

Peter V’landys ultimately ensured the initial decision was reversed, partly thanks to a phone call from Prime Minister Scott Morrison, but it never should have come to that.

Rugby league has a habit of getting itself into situations that could have so easily been avoided.

When there’s issues like the salary cap, the 2021 draw, club funding and ongoing COVID- 19 restrictions to navigate, why the ARL Commission would even discuss the anthem is beyond me.

How did the people charged with running our game ever think this was going to fly?

Sure, they’d appease a handful of players who, for their own reasons, feel uncomfortable about the anthem.

But in the process, they knew they were going to divide the game and cause an uproar amongst fans.

They did it anyway.

Faced with a decision to stand up to the people who get paid to play the game or back the fans who pay to watch it, the Commission chose the former.

There’s been hints in recent times that the NRL is desperate to improve its level of wokeness and inclusivity. It should just try running the game of rugby league instead.

Regardless of if you have a ‘change the date’ bumper sticker or you take a knee for the anthem, you should be proud you live in a country where the Prime Minister is so quick and passionate about defending its values and traditions.

Of course Scott Morrison should have called Peter V’landys.

And he should call every sporting organisation that ever thinks dropping the anthem is a good idea, just like he should call every Council that likes to pretend January 26 isn’t Australia Day. Inclusivity and understanding in this country is vitally important, whether it be in sport or everyday life, but you don’t achieve that by chopping anthems or changing dates. The quicker decision makers in business, sport and politics realise this, the better.

Election result not a surprise While the rest of the country was calling for her head, nobody should really be shocked that Annastacia Palaszczuk easily won the Queensland State Election last weekend.

The trend of governments who have largely performed well during the Coronavirus pandemic being re- elected is likely to continue for some time.

First it was Jacinda Ardern in New Zealand, and now Ms Palaszczuk.

When you look at what’s going on around the rest of the world, any government that manages to avoid widespread lockdowns and serious health disasters isn’t going to be kicked out of office.

But that doesn’t mean Ms Palaszczuk’s border closures are right.

She can say it’s been all about health advice and not politics, but if you believe that, there’s a Nigerian prince who needs your bank account details I can put you in touch with.

There is no logical reason for residents of greater Sydney to still be banned from Queensland.

There is no logical reason for families to still be torn apart, when you consider the low case numbers of COVID-19 being reported daily across the country.

The Premier may have been all smiles when claiming victory last Saturday night, but her leadership will forever be stained by playing politics at a time the nation needed Queensland do its share of the heavy lifting.

Her decision to treat the rest of the nation like second class citizens will land on the wrong side of history, though with a four-year term in front of her, I doubt she cares.

Federal Government talks up “unprecedented” level of support for home buyers

inister for Housing Michael Sukkar has visited Lindsay to talk up the Federal Government’s First Home Loan Deposit Scheme, and to announce applications under the extended concept are now open.

On Tuesday he joined Federal Lindsay MP Melissa McIntosh at a Rawson Homes house under construction in Mulgoa, which is expected to support 40 to 50 jobs over the course of the build.

Ms McIntosh said the First Home Loan Deposit Scheme was helping people in the community achieve home ownership sooner.

“For many young families, buying a house is your biggest investment,” she said.

“More first home buyers in our community and across Australia will be able to realise that dream, with a deposit of as little as five per cent.”

Mr Sukkar said it was important that the government delivered assistance to those chasing the ‘great Australian dream’, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 recession.

“The Morrison Government is committed to doing all we can to help Australians get into a home of their own as part of our Economic Recovery Plan,” he said.

Stadium upgrade possible Panthers, Council eagerly await expected funding announcement in State Budget TROY DODDS

T

his month’s State Budget may open the door for an upgrade of Panthers Stadium, or potentially even the building of a new boutique venue in the region.

There’s reports that the Budget, due to be handed down by Treasurer Dominic Perrottet on November 17, will include funding for planning small stadiums across Sydney, including at Penrith.

The National Rugby League has been calling for investment in suburban venues as it moves away from its ‘big stadium’ mantra and re-invests in local tribalism.

With the ANZ Stadium re-build now off the agenda, the opportunity will emerge for the State Government to back such plans.

The Weekender understands the Budget is likely to include funding for business case planning, not specific infrastructure dollars at this stage.

Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said a possible new stadium in Penrith has been on the cards for some time.

“Outer Western Sydney has been part of our cabinet endorsed stadia strategy for a number of years now,” he told the Weekender.

“We have reminded all schools that the current number of people allowed for public outdoor gatherings is 30.”

Under the order, a public gathering means a meeting or assembly of persons from different households for a common purpose in a public place. This includes public parks, reserves, beaches, public gardens and spaces.

Detective Inspector Pietruszka said group photos can still be held at schools or venues and that restrictions could change.

“Obviously, this situation changes regularly, and we will keep people posted,” he said.

On the spot fines of $1,000 can be issued if Public Health Orders are not complied with.

he Nepean Hospital redevelopment will be completed sooner than expected after the NSW Government announced that Stage 2 of the $1 billion project will be brought forward by two years.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian visited the site last Thursday to announce the fasttracking as the hospital’s 14-storey tower reached its highest point of construction.

Ms Berejiklian said she was thrilled to see the progress of Stage 1, which is set to be completed by the end of next year.

“I am pleased to announce that we are accelerating the construction and the completion of this site at end of next year will mean that patients can start using part of the facility in early 2022,” she said.

“It will be a gamechanger for the region, providing new world- class health facilities including an expanded emergency department, birthing suites and neonatal intensive care unit.”

With fast-tracked funding allowing Stage 2 works to start earlier while construction for Stage 1 is still underway, Ms Berejiklian said the project has been a success story of the pandemic.

“COVID has not slowed down the build-

ing of this project but the team has showed the resilience to push through and provide world-class services to the fastest growing region in our state,” she said.

“Bringing the project forward by two years will fast- track economic recovery in western Sydney and create thousands of local jobs – both essential drivers of the COVID-19 Recovery Plan.”

Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney, Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said the health facility would not only help drive economic recovery but future proof health services.

“This major project will generate thousands of jobs and deliver the very best healthcare available to the community, making the region an even more appealing place to live and work,” he said.

But the State Opposition isn’t buying the ‘fast-tracking’ announcement.

“There was nothing new in the announcement and to label it as ‘fasttracking’ is insulting to those communities, particularly in regional NSW, which are still waiting for desperately needed hospital upgrades,” said Shadow Health Minister, Ryan Park.

“The Premier has promised dozens of hospital upgrades with little progress.

This Government is good at announcing projects, but poor at delivering on time.”

Push for koalas to call Penrith home U

nder threat due to habitat destruction, koala numbers have plummeted in recent years.

But one Penrith Councillor thinks a number of the iconic Aussie marsupials could be re-homed and safeguarded here if given the chance.

Councillor Kevin Crameri has asked Council to advocate for a koala population to be relocated to the area, suggesting the former ADI site at Jordan Springs could be the perfect spot.

“The koala habitats have been devastated by the recent fires,” he said.

“Here we have pristine land with plenty of feed for them and they would be a lot more protected for the future.

“Even if they put in the ones that were injured, it would be easier to keep track of them because they’re in a small area, so it would be a good rehabilitation place for the koalas.”

Cr Crameri believes a grove of trees was planted by the former site owners to house koalas, however the plan never eventuated.

“I think we should be talking with the appropriate people about whether that

grove is in there, whether it would be feasible to have koalas in there,” he said.

“We still have a fence around the place so it makes it reasonably easy to keep the koalas in.”

Cr Crameri said it could be a “great asset for Penrith”.

Lendlease, which owns the site and recently received State Government approval to rezone 38.4ha of employment land to urban, didn’t expressly rule out the idea when the Weekender contacted them for comment.

“Around 60 per cent of the former Australian Defence Industries site at St Marys is being devoted to creating the 900- hectare Wianamatta Regional Park, which is owned and managed by National Parks and Wildlife Service,” Lendlease Senior Development Manager Kevin Montier said.

“As part of the re-zoning, an additional 1.2 hectares, featuring ecologically sensitive bushland and wetland areas, will be added to the Wianamatta Regional Park.

“We’re looking forward to working with Penrith City Council and the NSW Government to enhance the biodiversity value of the region, while also delivering the job opportunities that will be created through the development.”

Leagues Club cops $10k fine P

anthers Leagues Club has been fined $10,000 for COVID safety breaches after footage showed fans mingling, hugging and drinking while standing during last month’s NRL Grand Final.

It seems patrons at the club couldn’t contain their enthusiasm during the clash between Penrith and Melbourne at ANZ Stadium, but Liquor & Gaming Director of Compliance Dimitri Argeres said that is no excuse for throwing the rules out the window.

“It’s not fair on the club, its staff or the community and we expect better behaviour from patrons who need to be aware of the rules when attending a venue,” he said.

“At the same time, venues need to make sure they are adequately implementing their safety plans particularly when higher patron numbers are expected due to special events.”

Panthers was not the only venue caught for Grand Final fails with ANZ Stadium fined $5,000 for patrons in the bar areas congregating across the balcony to watch the match.

Two other venues at Sydney Olympic

Park have also been issued $5,000 fines for Public Health Order breaches detected during the Grand Final compliance operation – The Brewery at the Novotel and the Locker Room.

“Sporting events build up anticipation and create lots of excitement, we get that. But they also create exactly the types of situation we’re trying to avoid – crowds that mingle and turn into one big group of close contacts,” Mr Argeres said.

“We’re just about to get full swing into party season with sports finals, the races, school formals and Christmas and New Year’s functions.

“These are all events where caution can be forgotten, but don’t forget life isn’t quite back to normal yet and if we want to enjoy summer with our friends and families, we need to keep COVID transmission low.”

Meanwhile, New South Wales continues to keep case numbers of COVID-19 low, with only a handful of community transmission cases in the last week.

Anyone with even the mildest symptoms of the virus is urged to get tested and isolate until they get a result.

he Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre wants to hear what the people of Penrith want when it comes to the city’s performing arts hub.

Residents are being invited to have their say in a new survey in partnership with Penrith City Council that will help evolve The Joan for the future.

CEO of Penrith Performing & Visual Arts, Hania Radvan, said COVID- 19 interrupting their usual programming has given them a chance to improve it.

“COVID has interrupted our usual programming at The Joan to some degree along with what is financially viable, but we’re excited to embrace this opportunity to seek community input to reshape our offering,” she said.

“We program to the community interest and sometimes people aren’t aware of the scope on offer, so we want the community voice to be a part of what we present.”

No matter your age or what you are interested in, Ms Radvan said they want to hear from some of the 210,000 residents in the Local Government Area.

“I’m a dumb c**t”: Man’s admission after police chase

A P-plater who lead police on a dangerous high-speed chase along the M4 has been jailed for nine months.

Police formed the view Jay Alan McDonald was travelling at no less than 190km/ hr as he weaved his Nissan Pathfinder all over the roadway about 9.30pm on September 26.

First coming under notice when he overtook a police vehicle on the inside lane heading westbound at St Clair, the 26-year-old continued to accelerate despite officers activating their warning lights and sirens, Penrith Local Court heard.

However, police were forced to terminate the pursuit about one kilometre from the Mulgoa Road exit due to safety concerns.

When he was finally cornered a short time later, McDonald didn’t go willingly, attempting to put the vehicle back in motion before officers successfully took him to ground.

McDonald, who was sweating profusely, admitted to smoking “a couple of cones a few hours ago” and 4.79g of the drug was found in his car along with a credit card suspected of being stolen.

At the time he said he panicked because he was “real stressed out”.

“I’m sorry, I’m a dumb c**t, I shouldn’t have run, but I’m real stressed out”, he told police after he was apprehended, agreed facts show.

The court heard McDonald, of Panania, had only recently completed a 13-month stint in the Drug Court program in March this year.

His lawyer said he unfortunately relapsed during COVID-19, and the court heard McDonald was caught driving with a cocktail of methamphetamine, cannabis, and cocaine in his blood on June 30.

Magistrate Michael Antrum said he was travelling at “extraordinary speed”.

“It posed a significant danger to the community,” he reprimanded.

Alexander Luis Serrano faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday and was finally sentenced for ‘sexually touch another person without consent’ after pleading guilty in September this year.

The court heard Serrano and the then 23-year-old victim were at a mutual friend’s house with a group of people watching a movie and eating pizza on December 30, 2018 when the incident unfolded.

When the victim went to the bathroom, Serrano rolled onto her mattress on the floor and remained there despite being asked multiple times by her to move.

He then began to touch her stomach, breasts and groin area, despite the woman shoving his hand away.

She finally managed to push him off and ran to tell one of her friends.

The court heard Serrano texted the woman the following day and apologised, blaming the small amount of alcohol he had consumed for his behaviour.

Serrano’s lawyer argued strongly for a non-conviction, saying the conduct was “relatively fleeting” and an aberration, and her client was someone of otherwise “undeniably good character”.

However, the prosecutor disagreed, saying it wasn’t “momentary or fleeting”.

“The victim was clearly fearful, she froze,” he said.

He submitted Serrano’s late guilty plea on the day of the defended hearing should not attract any discount, and said a penalty must be imposed that denounced the offending.

“A conviction must flow,” he concluded.

Magistrate Michael Antrum said the fact Serrano ignored both the woman’s physical and verbal cues showed “a great deal

of naivety or lack of respect, or both”.

“The facts, Mr Serrano, do indicate a young woman who did not want your attention... and did not welcome your actions,” he said.

“This is no insignificant offence,” he added, pointing out this type of offending often had “longstanding repercussions for the victim”.

“It is a gross violation of the integrity of that young lady’s body.”

The first-time offender was convicted and handed a 15-month Community Correction Order.

Woman urged to stay on right track after drug bust

A Magistrate has urged a woman not to become another “drop out” after she was busted with cannabis.

Magistrate Michael Antrum told Amy Leigh Rech that “drugs are for losers – full stop”.

“Cannabis is often referred to as a recreational drug – it isn’t,” he said in court last week.

Rech fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday and pleaded guilty to drug possession and driving with an illicit substance present in her blood.

Her lawyer said the 21-year-old had abstained from self medicating with cannabis since her detection, and described the experience of being arrested and disclosing the events to her family and workplace as “all particularly traumatic for her”.

He pointed out she was not previously known to police and her traffic record entitled her to leniency.

Magistrate Antrum told a teary-eyed Rech the events had obviously taken a toll.

“I can see you’re upset, and I hope this doesn’t sound perverse, but that’s a good thing – it means you’re taking it seriously,” he said.

She was handed a seven-month Conditional Release Order without conviction on each offence.

Man says he’s learned his lesson after street racing

Harrison Keith Bright has been warned to be “squeaky clean from now on in” after he was caught street racing.

During his sentencing at Penrith Local Court last Thursday, his lawyer told Magistrate Michael Antrum the 19-yearold did not plan the incident and it was initiated by the other driver who failed to stop when police intervened.

She said Bright was already feeling the “sting” of not having his licence, adding he didn’t need the full 12 months off the road to learn his lesson.

“He’s clearly a good kid who’s done something silly and reckless on this occasion,” she said.

Magistrate Antrum told him to “grow up”.

“I don’t know if you’ve ever attended upon a vehicle collision... what it looks like inside those mangled wreckages?” he said.

He was convicted, disqualified for three months and fined $330.

Intoxicated man assaulted and spat at security guards

A man who assaulted and spat at a security guard when he refused to leave a licenced premises has been ordered to perform 200 hours of community service.

Dylan Brown faced court last week and was told his behaviour would not be tolerated before being handed a 10-month Intensive Correction Order (ICO).

The court heard in addition to the assault, Brown, who has other matters of violence on his record, swung at three other security guards during the tussle.

“You can’t control your alcohol consumption and you can’t control your fists,” Magistrate Antrum scolded.

His lawyer said Brown was “ashamed and disappointed” by his behaviour.

Magistrate Antrum warned it would be the last time he walked out a free man if he came back for a matter of violence.

He was convicted and also fined $660.

Penrith: Residents find storage cages broken into at units

On the evening of Saturday, October 31 and early morning of Sunday, November 1, numerous storage cages in Vista Street, Hope Street and Empire Circuit in Penrith were broken into with various items stolen.

Any residents who may have had their storage cage targeted and have not yet reported the matter to police are urged to do so.

Anyone with potential information is asked to contact Penrith Police station or Crime Stoppers.

Penrith: Drugs fell from man’s pocket in front of police

At 1.00am on Saturday, October 31, police were patrolling Richmond Road, Penrith when they stopped a vehicle for the purposes of a random breath test.

A male exited the vehicle and as he did so, two clear resealable bags containing what is believed to be prohibited drugs fell from his pocket.

The male was placed under arrest and a search of his wallet located a third clear resealable bag containing what is believed to be prohibited drugs and four counterfeit Australian notes.

He was charged with ‘possession of counterfeit money’, ‘possess prohibited drug’ and three outstanding first instance warrants.

Emu Plains: Teenagers robbed in early morning incident

At 5.30am on Saturday, October 31 two teenage males were waiting for a bus in Sheppard Road, Emu Plains.

A white Land Rover stopped nearby with an unknown male passenger asking what the two had in their bags. This male exited the vehicle armed with a golf club whilst a second male exited the vehicle armed with a pair of scissors and a third male believed to be the driver also exited the vehicle.

They threatened the two males, punch-

ing one to the head before stealing items from the pair and leaving in the same vehicle.

The first offender is described as male, chubby build in his late teens/early 20’s.

The second offender is described as male, medium height with a skinny build. The third offender is described as male, medium height and build in his late teens/ early 20’s.

Nepean Detectives are continuing investigations.

Penrith: Male and female charged after alleged assault

At 8.00pm on Sunday, November 1, police responded to an alleged assault upon a male and female in Robert Street, Penrith.

Upon arrival a 26-year-old Bidwill male and a 49-year-old Bidwill female were seen to be acting aggressively towards the pair.

Police intervened and whilst arresting them, both assaulted police necessitating the use of capsicum spray.

Both were charged with ‘common assault’ and ‘resist officer in execution of duty’.

They will front court on December 1.

South Penrith: Man and woman found passed out in vehicle

At 8.55am on Monday, November 2 police were called to attend the Platypus Pre-School car park in South Penrith to check a vehicle that had been parked there for several hours with two people asleep inside.

A search of the vehicle located two knives and drug paraphernalia.

The occupants, a 26-year-old South Penrith female and a 36-year-old South Penrith male were issued Field Court Attendance Notices for ‘drug possession’, ‘possession of equipment for administering prohibited drugs’ and ‘custody of knife in a public place’.

Both will appear at Penrith Local Court at a date to be set.

Easements explained We have a few matters coming across our desks at the moment where property owners are being asked to grant easements to developers who are developing land on neighbouring lots.

We thought we would take the opportunity to explain what an easement is.

An easement is one property owner granting a right to someone else (usually an adjoining owner) to cross or otherwise use a portion of their land for a particular purpose. Examples of common easements include: 1. Easements to give access to essential services, for example granting Sydney Water a right to cross over a landowner’s land to access drainage pipes for maintenance and repair.

2. Allowing neighbours to access adjoining properties, for example battleaxe lots that utilise rights of carriageway to travel over land that technically belongs to someone else to get to their own property.

3. Drainage easements, to allow drainage pipes to pass over multiple lots of land for the benefit of multiple properties. Drainage easements are probably the most common type of easement that is requested by developers from adjoining landowners.

or drainage origin is located on the other side of someone else’s property they will need to obtain an easement to be able to construct drainage pipes and bury them in someone else’s yard so that the townhouse development can have the benefit of said drainage.

Usually for this type of easement, a developer will pay a fee to the landowner in return for the granting of the easement. A landowner is not obliged to provide an adjoining landowner with an easement. There are some special circumstances in which an adjoining landowner could compel a landowner to grant an easement, however, this is usually in special circumstances.

When you are buying a property, it is important to check the location of any easements that affect the land. Generally speaking, structures like swimming pools, concrete slabs, outhouses, granny flats and the like cannot be built over easements as that would be contrary to the person with the benefit of the easements right to access the land for the purpose set out in said easement.

Contracts for the Sale of Land in New South Wales must contain information about any easements that affect the subject land. If you are planning on renovating a home or constructing anything in the front or backyard you should always check with your Solicitor to make sure there are no easements.

New place to remember Memorial at Victoria Park in St Marys upgraded just in time for Remembrance Day EMILY FESZCZUK

National Servicemen memorial at Victoria Park in St Marys has received a much- needed facelift just in time for Remembrance Day. The new- look Penrith City Australian National Servicemen’s Association Inc. (NASHOS) memorial and surroundings has undergone restoration thanks to Penrith City Council.

Council landscaper Ken Carter said they wanted to make the space, which originally just had a plaque on a concrete slab, feel as important as it should.

“It didn’t sit well within the landscape and we wanted to make it accessible as we have veterans laying wreaths, so we put paving on top which kept with the heritage of the other memorials,” he said.

“We put a memorial garden behind with rosemary as a Remembrance plant, removed the bin so any photos had the proper reverence, and a seat for people to enjoy the space and future ceremonies.”

Penrith NASHOS President Harry May said the members of the association are very happy with the updated memorial.

“It was just a sandstone block on a slab of concrete – not very appealing – but we are so happy as it looks great now,” he said.

“We are very thankful for our Secretary Graham Larkham, who spoke with Council to get it done, and we were very surprised and appreciative of Council when we saw the finished product.”

Mr May said it is now a great place to pay tribute for various events, including Remembrance Day next Wednesday, November 11.

“There are different events around Penrith and St Marys for Remembrance Day, but we invite all community members to visit the site at free will, taking in the thoughts and memories for all National Servicemen,” he said.

Mayor Karen McKeown said Council believes it is important to support and remember all service people from the area.

“It is important we don’t lose touch with our heritage and that we acknowledge the service our returned men and women have given,” she said.

“We encourage everybody to come and visit this great new memorial to see what has been happening and to pay their respects to these service people that make up our community.”

t Marys RSL Sub-Branch will move its Remembrance Day service online this year, as COVID-19 restrictions continue to bite.

St Marys RSL Sub- Branch Honorary Secretary, Tony Fryer, said broadcasting a pre- recorded COVID- safe ceremony is the best option.

“There are other services taking place in Penrith on November 11 but we usually get hundreds of people on the day, which could cause an issue with restrictions,” he told the Weekender.

“We will put our service on our Facebook and other related pages so that

anyone who wishes to participate can do so remotely at a time of choosing with who they want.”

Mr Fryer said the service will also be played at the St Marys Diggers and Band Club at 11am.

“It will be on screens and the RSL Guns War Memorial next to the Diggers Club will be open for a short time for anyone who wants to lay a wreath as a personal tribute,” he said.

“People just need to make time to have some silence to reflect on the service of the many Australians who provided for our country to make it what it is today.”

Penrith RSL Sub- Branch will hold its service at Memory Park from 11am on Wednesday, with a limited attendance.

64 new firefighters have graduated from the Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Emergency Services Academy at Orchard Hills.

The state’s newest firefighters include a former professional rally car co- driver, a martial arts instructor, a former dairy farm manager, youth worker and a number of teachers.

FRNSW Commissioner Paul Baxter congratulated the new recruits at last Friday’s ceremony.

“Becoming a firefighter is no easy feat.

We attract 6,000 to 8,000 applications each year, yet of these thousands, only an elite few are chosen,” he said.

“264 of that elite few stand before us today, each of them from diverse backgrounds but sharing one common goal – to protect the irreplaceable.

“It is also pleasing to see that many graduates are joining family members already in service, with some being second generation firefighters.”

Commissioner Baxter said the graduates have trained with passion and dedication to become part of the FRNSW family.

responding to fires, natural disasters and hazmat incidents,” he said.

The new graduates will now get to work.

for anything and I know they will uphold the high standards of integrity, courage and professionalism expected of a FRNSW firefighter,” Commissioner Baxter said.

Icy reception for winter facility I moved right next door to Nepean Shores for a bit of peace and quiet in my old age (Locals to fight centre, Weekender October 30). I do not wish to move away from my home, which I enjoy living in. Not being a driver it is close to doctors, shops etc. For starters this resort is going to be very noisy 24/7 to keep the ice frozen. 54 metres high is going to leave a lot of my neighbours in the shade and also spoil the ambience of the river walk, which is just across the road. The traffic is already busy at weekends, this will make it unbearable.

We don’t need this resort here, there are lots of other vacant pieces of land around that are not in such close proximity to our homes. I know selfish people are always thinking of the money but please think about the older folk around.

Council centre upgrade What a complete waste of ratepayers’ money (Civic centre to get facelift, Weekender October 23). How about fixing roads and put some time, money and effort into upgrading parks. I was at the Council a few weeks ago and I was the only customer in a huge area. Costly renovation I’ve been in there once in my life, to get some organic bin liners because we had run out between deliveries. I was only allowed one packet. No keeping Roger down 80-year-old Wallacia resident finds unique way to take part in iconic City2Surf EMILY FESZCZUK

T

he sights of Sydney and Bondi beach from the iconic City2Surf race were replaced with the Nepean River and the Blue Mountains for Roger French when he completed the ‘virtual run’ locally last month.

It was the 80-year-old’s 46th time competing since he was a part of the inaugural City2Surf in 1971.

Mr French, who lives in Wallacia, said he has watched the run grow over half a century, and was so pleased he could still take part albeit differently due to COVID-19.

“I came 850th out of 1,500 runners the first year then it jumped to 5,000 the year after that and has grown spectacularly up to around 85,000 participants in recent years,” he told the Weekender.

“The organisers do an amazing job every year with the size of it and this time they did a great job with the app where you enter your own course but it certainly didn’t feel virtual when you still run the 14 kilometres .”

Running two laps of the Great River Walk, Mr French said training each year keeps him motivated.

“I call it my annual fitness exam, so I walk every day and then for three months I run and gradually build up to 14 kilometres and this year I got my best result coming fourth out of 26 in the over 80s group,” he said.

“Along the river was flat compared to the usual race and it was lovely with hundreds of people I passed saying hello and ‘good on you mate’.”

Crediting his good health to the Natural Health Society of Australia, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary, Mr French said he will be lining up for next year’s race in whatever form it may take.

“I joined the society 53 years ago when I felt sick and tired in my 20s and learnt about taking care of your body through food, exercise, handling stress and the benefits of sunshine,” he said.

“I need the goal every year otherwise I wouldn’t train every day, so I look forward to punishing my body again and even if I have to walk, I can still do a respectable time.”

Our vision for the Nepean Council and the community’s vision for the Nepean River as a well-designed, well-connected focal point for nature-based recreation is closer to being realised with the delivery of several key projects.

The recreational precinct at Regatta Park is one step closer with archaeological investigations and assessment for historical and Aboriginal heritage now underway.

This work is expected to take four to six weeks, and during this time sections of the park will not be available for use.

This stage of the Regatta Park project is an important step towards the delivery of the new $24 million precinct which is funded by Penrith City Council and the Australian and NSW Governments through the Western Sydney City Deal’s Liveability Program.

Final designs for this new precinct are expected to be released in December 2020.

On the eastern side of the Nepean River, the revitalisation of Tench Reserve continues with the recent announcement of a new $10 million open space park to be developed and deliv-

ered by the NSW Government through the Parks for People Program. The next stage of community consultation for this project is due to take place later this month.

These projects were identified in Council’s Our River Masterplan which was developed with the community and outlines a shared vision and a strategic framework to celebrate, activate and protect the City’s favourite natural asset.

As Penrith grows, the Nepean River will play an even greater role in providing residents with opportunities to escape the city and reconnect with nature, as well as attract visitors to experience and enjoy our city’s favourite natural asset.

It is exciting to see so many projects outlined in the Our River Masterplan either planned, underway or already delivered and the ongoing program of work to enhance the Nepean River strengthening Penrith’s position as western Sydney’s most liveable city.

Scholarships help passionate students follow their passion

estern Sydney University has partnered with Sydney Zoo to present two scholarships up to $30,000 and an internship experience with the new world-class attraction.

The inaugural recipients of the Sydney Zoo Scholarship in Tourism Management and Animal Science/ Zoology are Penrith residents Christian Dan Anonuevo and Katelyn Mitchell.

Mature- aged student Mr Anonuevo said the scholarship was a driving force to do well in his Tourism course.

“It has given me the confidence to do well in my course and I feel that tourism

has so many positives to offer society at large,” he said.

“It’s a fantastic way of exploring different cultures and I hope to work in a role that focuses on improving sustainable outcomes in the tourism industry.”

Zoology student Ms Mitchell said receiving the scholarship puts her one step closer to her dream of becoming a zookeeper.

“When I was in Year 10, I heard Sydney Zoo was planning to open and I told myself that one day I would work there,” she said.

“Not only will the scholarship help me get through uni, but the internship will kick-start my career, giving me practical experience with the experts.”

et sail back in time to celebrate the 100th year of the Naval Association of Australia.

The Nepean Blue Mountains Sub-section of the Naval Association of Australia is encouraging Maritime enthusiasts to visit the Nepean Naval Museum in Penrith.

With the Nepean Blue Mountains Subsection also celebrating its 67th anniversary this year, Secretary and Treasurer Frank Syaranamual said the area has a strong history with the Navy.

“The Orchard Hills Defence Establishment had its Naval Missile Maintenance establishment up until the mid-1990s and we still have the Nepean Naval Reserve Cadet Unit, which is formally recognised by the Royal Australian Navy,” Mr Syaranamual said.

“The Naval Association and its subsections represent the interests of thousands of sailors who suffered and served through all conflicts since 1920, so it is important to celebrate that endurance.”

Mr Syaranamual said several of the 37 sub- section members work at the Naval Museum, which has evolved since opening in 2014 next to Nepean Rowing Club.

to a new level, Mr Syaranamual said the museum is looking for volunteer guides to support the ageing members.

“They must be aged between 18 and 70, male or female, and prepared to do at least four hours per month, during which they will receive training from our experienced members,” he said.

“It is our plan that in future the museum will be run by members of the community

who are interested, rather than ex- Naval members or sub-section members, so that we can still continue the important legacy of our maritime history.”

The Nepean Naval Museum is open every Sunday throughout the year from 11am to 3pm.

A memorial service has been held to honour the lives of all Fire and Rescue NSW members who died this year.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott joined Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner Paul Baxter at a private ceremony at Orchard Hills on Monday.

Mr Elliott said it has been an incredibly challenging year, especially for our emergency services.

“The Fire and Rescue family, like many families in our State, couldn’t

properly farewell their colleagues during the COVID - 19 funeral restrictions, but that hasn’t stopped us from celebrating their lives and achievements,” Mr Elliott said.

“Every member of Fire and Rescue dedicates their lives to serving their community, and remembering them after they are gone is the least we can do to honour their contribution.”

Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner Paul Baxter said Monday’s event was about honour-

ing those who have died during these difficult times.

“All the individuals we are remembering today made significant contributions to Fire and Rescue NSW, to their communities, and to the lives of those around them,” Commissioner Baxter said.

“We send our deepest condolences to their friends, families and colleagues during this difficult time.”

49 members were honoured at the ceremony.

$45,000 RAISED FOR CHARITY More than $45,000 was raised for the Luke Priddis Foundation on Tuesday morning at the Nepean Business Network’s Melbourne Cup Breakfast.

This year’s breakfast was held at Panthers Leagues Club’s EVAN Theatre, with local business people digging deep to help the local charity and its new autism in work program.

LOCAL AREA TOPS STORM STATISTICS Three suburbs in the Penrith Local Government Area have made the top 10 list of most storm affected areas in western Sydney.

While Blacktown topped the list, Glenmore Park came in second, while St Clair was third and Cranebrook was seventh.

The statistics were compiled by NRMA Insurance.

NRMA Insurance research also found over half (57 per cent) of all NSW residents say their home and family are prepared for severe weather this summer, however only 35 per cent say they have actually taken steps to prepare.

Cheeky musical is a fun escape i v e r s i d e ’ s National Theatre of Parramatta will return to the stage this month to present ‘The Things I Could Never Tell Steven’.

This cheeky and delightful musical comedy is written by Penrith composer Jye Bryant (pictured).

Jye told the Weekender that the title sparked the idea for the show that follows the main character Steven and his secrets.

“When I saw the title, I thought it would be interesting to do a show focused on all the unspoken things that we think but never openly say, and from that different song ideas and four characters emerged,” he said.

“You never actually get to meet Steven but through his wife, mother, father and ex you learn about the different sides of him and how different his relationships are with each individual person.”

While all the characters are desperately seeking his approval, company and being in competition to be the number one in his life, Steven remains elusive.

Bringing the show to life is actor Ian Stenlake, vocal sensation Elenoa Roko-

baro, vocalist and actor Adam J Rennie, and music theatre star Helen Dallimore.

Jye said he is excited to have the seventh production of the show in the local area with such great talent.

“The cast are the top of the musical theatre world being some of Australia’s greatest performers, so it is really exciting to have such big names involved in this production,” he said.

“It has played in Ireland and Northern Ireland, Brisbane, Sydney and has had showcases in New York and on West End in London, but it being local means I actually get to sit in the audience and watch it.”

With this one- act revue style musical

being the start of live theatre returning for audiences in NSW, Jye said it is a mustsee.

“It deals with so many themes including marriage, different relationships, even infidelity but still manages to be cheeky,” he said.

Ê I wanted to confess something... a few weeks ago I predicted ‘SAS Australia’ would be a flop for Channel Seven and I was wrong. Not only do I think ‘SAS’ is the show of the year, but it is doing gangbusters for Seven. It’s already the most watched show ever on the 7Plus app, and it’s giving ‘The Block’ a run for its money on broadcast too. A sneaky tip for ‘SAS’ lovers, if you watch via 7Plus, you can view an uncensored version of each episode, which has all the profanity in it.

‘SAS Australia’ airs Monday and Tuesday nights.

At the movies...

Sequel falls flat THE CRAFT: LEGACY ++ 1 hour, 34 minutes EMILY FESZCZUK

If you were like me and loved the edgy 1996 cult film ‘The Craft’, you might have had high hopes for the sequel, especially as it is produced by horror experts Blumhouse Productions.

‘The Craft: Legacy’ starts strong and the continuation story sees Lily (Cailee Spaeny) and her mum Helen (Michelle Monaghan) move to be with her new boyfriend (David Duchovny).

Lily meets three new friends with powers and the teenagers form a coven with their witchcraft proving deadly.

The basic spell remains the same, but the magic of the original seems

to be missing even though there are nods to it throughout.

Writer and director Zoe Lister-Jones is progressive with socially and politically aware characters but when you must announce that one of them is transgender, it feels like you are trying too hard.

There isn’t a lot of spells being cast or scary scenes for that matter, rather it deals with more modern issues of sexuality and feminism.

The young actresses do have great chemistry and the electric soundtrack gets some points but, if you are a fan of the first film, you will probably wish the cauldron didn’t get re-lit to brew this one up.

Learning CPR could save a life, so what’s stopping you?

L

strengthen your chances of springing into action if ever needed.

No one knows how well they will respond in a life or death situation, but knowing how to do CPR has become automatic over the past 15 or so years of annual updates, so I am as confident as I can be that I would be able to effectively deliver CPR. Similarly, I would be prepared to use a defibrillator, as I have been taught that they are automated to do all the work for you, delivering step by step instructions, and are programmed so that it’s impossible to shock a victim with a beating heart.

I highly recommend that everyone attends a CPR course annually, especially anyone with a backyard pool, during which you will also have the chance to access an AED training device.

The more people in our community who are familiar with CPR, the better off we all are.

CPR courses are run monthly at Nepean Aquatic Centre by a Royal Life Saving Australia qualified assessor.

ast month saw ‘Restart A Heart Day’, an initiative started in 2017 and gaining momentum annually to raise awareness and education of CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) and AED’s (Automated External Defibrillators) in the community. 248 people drowned between July 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020, many of whom may have been saved by the fast and effective application of CPR. For every minute that your heart is not pushing oxygen around your body and to your brain the chances of survival drop by 10 per cent. Around the 10-minute mark the damage to your brain is nearly irreversible.

Experts estimate the number of Australians with training in CPR is only around five per cent, but every year around 34,000 Australians suffer out- of- hospital cardiac arrest, and sadly on average only one in 10 survive.

We need to improve this statistic.

Most Australians would not know what to do if they were the only one around and someone needed CPR or defibrillation. It takes just a few hours each year to maintain a current CPR qualification, and annual repetition of CPR training updates and increases retention of CPR techniques to

The myths and misconceptions around lower back pain

L

ower back pain is considered to be the top cause of disability worldwide. Here are some quick facts regarding how we need to start thinking about what it means to have back pain.

1. Back pain that is persistent can be concerning but majority of the time is rarely dangerous.

2. Ageing being a causation of back pain is a common widespread misconception. Evidence based treatments can help relieve symptoms at any age.

3. A lot of the time back pain begins with no injury or with simple everyday movement. There are many risk factors that can contribute to back pain including stress, fatigue, previous history of back pain, inactivity etc. Therefore the susceptibility to experiencing back pain is heightened.

4. You’re not your scan! Scans poorly predict causes of back pain and are only helpful in a minority of the population. Unfortu-

nately the reports don’t say that most of the findings are common with people that have no pain.

Structurally our bodies are also changing and adapting to different loading parameters, meaning that a repeat scan over a period of time will report different findings.

5. Exercise and movement that cause some pain doesn’t mean you’re doing damage. Over time the tissues become very sensitive therefore leading to apprehensive behaviours. Normally this will settle with appropriate prescription of exercise.

6. There is no such thing as a normal posture. A variety of postures are healthy for the back and how we sit, bend, twist, turn is generally not the reasoning for why back pain starts.

7. Backs do not wear out with repetitive activity. Bending, twisting, turning and lifting are all safe movements for your spine as long

as you start gradually and slowly increase the amount and practice regularly.

8. Flare-ups of pain don’t necessarily mean you’re damaging your back. Back pain has many different causations therefore if you have a flare up it is important to stay calm and keep it moving.

9. Surgery, opioids and injections usually aren’t the cure for back pain and come with side effects and obvious risks. The research suggests that in most cases conservative management should be considered before even considering other alternative methods of treatment. Most causes of back pain / spinal pathologies can be well managed with non- invasive interventions.

10. A negative mindset, expectations and fear avoidance behaviours are factors that are linked with poorer prognosis and people are more likely to have persistent pain.

ith the potential for state borders to open, many families may make the lastminute decision to take a well- earned holiday. If you decide to leave your pet in a boarding facility, they will need to be vaccinated two weeks prior to their admission. Vaccinating your dog against preventable diseases is the logical choice when it comes to their health. We suggest vaccinating against the common preventable diseases including: Parvovirus (parvo): Parvovirus is a nasty disease that causes severe vomiting, blood in the stools, and loss of weight and appetite. Parvovirus is highly contagious and can survive for long periods in the environment after being passed in the faeces of infected dogs. The virus can withstand cleaning and weather changes, meaning the spread of the virus is hard to control. Parvovirus symptoms progress rapidly, and the disease can be fatal. Targeted treatments may be expensive, but if caught early may carry a good prognosis.

Canine distemper (hard pad disease): This is a highly contagious disease that is spread through the air and by contact

with infected animals. It can be contracted by dogs of all ages and affects the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and central nervous systems. It has no known cure.

Canine Adenovirus (infectious canine hepatitis): This virus targets a number of organs, notably the liver, kidneys, and eyes. This virus is spread in the faeces, urine, blood, and saliva of infected dogs.

Symptoms can vary and include fever, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and tonsillitis. The disease can progress rapidly and can result in sudden death.

Infectious Canine Tracheobronchitis (canine cough): ‘Kennel cough’ is a highly contagious respiratory disease in dogs.

As the name suggests, it presents itself as a dry and persistent cough. Young puppies are most at risk to suffer more severe complications such as pneumonia, fever, and lethargy. It is spread easily through inhalation of the infectious particles during contact with infected animals and is commonly contracted in dog parks, kennels, and dog shows.

Other diseases that we may recommend a vaccination against include Leptospirosis and Coronavirus (not the human kind).

Woods shocked by win NATHAN TAYLOR

A

fter her side recorded just two victories all year, Panthers netballer Lauren Woods said she was “shocked” and “surprised” to discover that she had won Netball NSW’s Premier League Player of the Year Award for 2020.

A Blacktown City Netball junior, Woods joined the Panthers this season after winning an U23s premiership with GWS Fury last year.

Following several seasons with GWS, Woods was “looking for a change” and picked Panthers as her next destination.

But with Panthers Netball going through another rebuilding year under new Opens coach Nerida Stewart, the wins were few and far between for Woods and her teammates.

When Woods, who plays Goal Shooter, was invited to attend last week’s Premier League Opens Grand Final between the ERNA Hawks and North Shore United, she was puzzled as to why.

“I got a call from one of the high performance managers at Netball NSW asking me to come to the Grand Final, which I thought was a bit strange,” Woods said.

Following the match, a swift end- ofyear presentation was held on court with Woods walking away with the coveted

Nance Kenny OAM Medal for Premier League Player of the Year.

Based on a 3, 2, 1 format and voted on by opposition coaches, the Medal is provided to the player who has displayed consistent outstanding performances throughout the season.

After her side recorded a pitiful 2- 11 record, Woods believed she was next to no chance to receive the award – the biggest of her blossoming career.

“I’m still kind of in shock about it, I was not expecting to win at all,” she said.

“It’s pretty humbling to be honest and I was really excited when it was announced. It was a great way to finish off a tough year.”

Meanwhile, Penrith District Netball Association referee Tamara Welsford took home the Neita Matthews OAM Umpire Award for 2020.

Welsford, who has come through the Netball NSW pathway, officiated her first Super Netball game this year.

The award is given in recognition of an umpire who demonstrates a desire to strive for excellence on court, show consistency in performance throughout competitions, and continues to improve their knowledge of the game.

Paying tribute to Welsford’s efforts over the past 12 months, NSW Umpire Coach Sharon Kelly was on hand to make the presentation on behalf of Matthews.

In 2015, Jennings was a member of the Panthers’ premiership- winning NYC squad, represented the Junior Kangaroos and made his NRL debut under coach Ivan Cleary.

The following year he again earned selection in the Junior Kangaroos, where he played alongside Panthers teammates Nathan Cleary, Tyrone May and Dylan Edwards.

“This club is at its best when players come through our junior development pathways and progress into the NRL together,” said Panthers General Manager Rugby League, Matt Cameron.

“Robert is an example of a player who was on that path. He played his most impressive football alongside a number of the individuals who are currently in our first grade team.

“We see Robert’s return to Panthers as an opportunity for him to rediscover that form while adding some strong depth to our roster.”

In other signing news, Penrith have also added Tigers forward Matt Eisenhuth to their roster for the upcoming 2021 and 2022 seasons.

Covic’s comeback

familiar face is returning to the Western Sydney Wanderers with club legend Ante Covic signing on as the club’s W-League goalkeeper coach for the upcoming season.

The 45-year-old returns to the Wanderers after a recent two-year stint as goalkeeper coach with the Marconi Stallions.

The foundation player had a decorated three seasons in the Red & Black, which saw him win an A- League Premiership and AFC Champions League as well as A- League Goalkeeper of the Year and Champions League Most Valuable Player.

Covic made a record 97 appearances for the Wanderers in the A- League, Champions League, FFA Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. The former Socceroo joins a Wanderers all- star coaching line- up led by Dean Heffernan, working alongside club legends Michael Beauchamp and Catherine Cannuli.

“We are delighted Ante has returned and taken up an opportunity to work with our W-League team,” he said.

“Ante has left a lasting legacy at this

club and we’re excited to see him build a new legacy with our fantastic W-League team.”

Covic said he was thrilled to return to Wanderland and is ready to share his wisdom with the next generation of goalkeepers.

“It feels good to be back on a few levels.

The history I was part of for the first three years at the Wanderers, the memories and achievements can never be taken away. I’m coming back to a club that I loved and I’ve had a lot of good times at,” he said.

“Since I’ve retired from playing professionally, I went into coaching straight afterwards. It was something that I always had a focus in doing and after 20 years as a goalkeeper, I have learned a lot and have a lot to give.”

With the Wanderers coming off a successful 2019/20 W-League campaign, Covic said he’s looking forward to being part of the team this season.

“The role is an opportunity I am savouring as obviously the women’s game is growing and the recent success of the Wanderers last year in the W-League,” he said.

Rising stars set to shine Best of the best junior golfers in New South Wales face-off in exciting semi-finals NATHAN TAYLOR

lenmore Heritage Valley Golf Club will host the semi- finals of the 2020 Eric Apperly Shield Pennant competition this Sunday, November 8.

The cream of NSW junior golfing talent will be on show this weekend, with 2019 champions St Michael’s Golf Club up against New South Wales Golf Club.

The Australian Golf Club and Avondale Golf Club were also due to compete, however The Australian withdrew this week after they were unable to field a team. As a result, Avondale now proceeds straight to next week’s Grand Final.

First contested in 1952, the Eric Apperly Shield is an Inter-club and District competition, open to both Metropolitan and Regional clubs.

Representative District Golf Association (DGA) teams, which are affiliated with Golf NSW, are also eligible to compete.

Normally played between July and September but extended this year due to the pandemic, the competition is for male and female golfers aged 21 and under.

Named after one of NSW Golf’s pioneer-

ing greats, the Eric Apperly Shield is considered the state’s premier Inter- club competition for elite junior golf.

The format sees two teams, consisting of six individual matches, compete over 18 holes of match- play, without the benefit of handicap.

Teams are initially pooled into groups for the home and away phase of the competition, with the winners of each pool progressing through to the Finals, which are played in a knockout format.

The final four teams have a rich history in the event, with reigning champions St Michael’s winning the title on 10 occasions (including the first ever event in 1952), New South Wales on five occasions, The Australian (since withdrawn) four times and Avondale has just one previous title victory.

The winner out of this weekend’s semifinal will take on Avondale next Sunday, November 15 at Twins Creeks Golf and Country Club for the 2020 title.

CRICKET: Round 3 of the Nepean District Cricket Association (NDCA) is in the books, with Panthers Cricket Club enduring another rain affected weekend. In first grade, Panthers’ game with Jordan Springs was washed out.

In sixth grade, Panthers dismissed Glenmore Park for 106 after 40 overs.

When Panthers hit the crease, they were 1/13 after seven overs before the match was abandoned.

BASEBALL: Round 5 of the NSW State Baseball League competition was washed out last week. The Greater Western Warriors first grade team were due to play Manly Warringah in two fixtures but both were axed before a ball was even pitched. Greater Western will have to wait a little longer to play baseball again with the club scheduled a bye in Round 6. They’ll hit the diamond again on November 11 against Cronulla.

GRIDIRON: The Nepean Ducks have been hammered by the Northern Sydney Rebels 26-0 in Round 4 of the Gridiron NSW Men’s competition.

Meanwhile, Nepean’s Colts team continue to go from strength to strength, belting the Rebels 54-6 to remain undefeated. This Saturday Nepean’s Men’s team will battle the UNSW Raiders, while Nepean’s Colts team will face the Sutherland Seahawks.

FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers have confirmed the return of their Girls-Only Holiday Clinics starting this summer at the club’s Centre of Football in Blacktown. Powered by Sports Kickstart, the sessions follow through on proven development systems that follow the FFA Curriculum.

CRICKET: The match between Penrith and Bankstown ended in a draw after rain abandoned play in Round 4 of the Belvidere Cup. Playing in a One-Day match at Howell Oval, Penrith won the toss and sent Bankstown into bat first. The visitors were strong with the willow, reaching 7/232 after 50 overs.

Henry Railz was the best of the bowlers, taking 3/33. When Penrith hit the crease later that day, they were 1/53 before a storm swept through the area. Penrith’s Tyran Liddiard top scored with 20.

This Saturday Penrith will hit the road when they travel to Coogee Oval to face Randwick Petersham.

e was once dubbed by keen-eyed Penrith fans as the “Jennings brother with the most potential”, now local junior Robert Jennings will get a second chance to prove his worth to supporters when he returns to the club next year.

Just days after Penrith’s Grand Final heartbreak, the club announced the surprise signing of 24-year-old Jennings on a one-year deal for the 2021 season.

With the club farewelling Malakai WateneZelezniak and Brayden McGrady at the conclusion of the season, the former Tiger and Rabbitoh is seen as the perfect replacement and will add some much- needed depth to Penrith’s backline.

“I was over the moon when I heard there was a chance to come back to Penrith,” Jennings said.

“This is where I grew up, where my career started and this is the place I call home.

“I’m extremely grateful to have the opportunity to reunite with so many of the talented players that I came through the grades with.”
